NBA ROUNDUP: AFTER VICTOR WEMBANYAMA’S EXIT, BLAZERS LEVEL SERIES

Scoot Henderson poured in a season-best 31 points as the visiting Portland Trail Blazers came back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to outlast the short-handed San Antonio Spurs 106-103 on Tuesday and even their first-round Western Conference playoff series at one win each.

The teams will play Game 3 on Friday in Portland, and it’s unclear if the Spurs will have Victor Wembanyama available. The NBA Defensive Player of the Year hit his face on the floor in the second quarter and was diagnosed with a concussion. He is scheduled for further testing on Wednesday.

The Spurs, led by Stephon Castle’s team-high 18 points, carried a one-point lead into the fourth quarter but reeled off the first 13 points of the final period to build their advantage to 93-79. The Trail Blazers roared back to take the lead via a 7-0 run capped by a Jrue Holiday layup with 2:02 left and held on from there.

Holiday produced 16 points and nine assists, and Deni Avdija added 14 points for the Trail Blazers. The Spurs got 17 points from De’Aaron Fox plus 16 points and 12 rebounds from Devin Vassell.

Lakers 101, Rockets 94

LeBron James compiled 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead Los Angeles to a victory over visiting Houston, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series.

With leading scorers Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) watching from the bench, Los Angeles’ Marcus Smart added 25 points, shooting 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and Game 1 hero Luke Kennard contributed 23 points, going 3 of 6 from deep.

Kevin Durant, who missed the opening game with a right knee contusion, scored 23 points for the Rockets, but he had nine turnovers and was held to three points after halftime. Alperen Sengun paired 20 points with 11 rebounds.

76ers 111, Celtics 97

VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey combined to make 11 3-pointers and score 59 total points as Philadelphia bounced back to even its Eastern Conference playoff series with host Boston.

Seventh-seeded Philadelphia shook off a dismal Game 1 performance, which included making just four 3-pointers in a 123-91 loss, with a complete reversal on the offensive end. The Sixers, who got 19 points from Paul George, shot a torrid 19 of 39 (48.7%) from beyond the arc in Game 2.

Jaylen Brown went for a game-high 36 points and Jayson Tatum finished with 19 points to go with his game-high 14 rebounds for the Celtics. No other Boston player reached double figures in scoring, a stark contrast from Game 1, when the Celtics’ entire starting five notched at least 10 points.

CHICAGO BULLS COACH BILLY DONOVAN RESIGNS AFTER 6 SEASONS

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan has resigned after six seasons, opting to step aside rather than work with a new front office, the team announced Tuesday.

President and CEO Michael Reinsdorf made it clear after firing executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley near the end of the season that he wanted Donovan to remain on the job. He said anyone who wanted to bring in a new coach was “probably not the right candidate for us.”

Now, it looks like whoever the Bulls hire to run their organization will get that opportunity.

“While we clearly wanted Billy to return as our head coach, we had open dialogue about the importance of respecting the process of bringing in new basketball operations leadership,” Reinsdorf said in a news release. “Together, we mutually agreed that giving that person the freedom to shape the organization was the best approach for everyone involved.”

The 60-year-old Donovan consistently has said he still has a passion for coaching. The decision to leave the Bulls was made “after a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization,” Donovan said in the team release announcing the move.

“I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit,” he said.

Donovan was arguably the top candidate on the market when the Bulls hired him in September 2020, a few months after Karnisovas and Eversley got their jobs.

Chicago’s lone playoff appearance since all three were hired came during the 2021-22 season, when it finished sixth in the Eastern Conference at 46-36 and got knocked out by Milwaukee in the first round. The Bulls lost in the play-in tournament the next three years.

Donovan got a contract extension last offseason. Reinsdorf said after firing Karnisovas and Eversley that the problem was the roster construction — not the coach.

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, Michael’s father, praised Donovan for the “class and genuine care” that he brought to the organization.

“We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach — that was never in question,” Jerry Reinsdorf said. “But through honest conversations, we all agreed that giving our new head of basketball operations the right to build out his staff was the most important thing for the future of this franchise. That is the kind of person Billy is — he put the Bulls first.”

Karnisovas’ inability to land a franchise cornerstone player and refusal to give the Bulls a better shot at the No. 1 pick by rebuilding were glaring. He finally changed course before this year’s trade deadline, dealing Nikola Vucevic to Boston, Kevin Huerter to Detroit, Coby White to Charlotte and Chicago product Ayo Dosunmu to Minnesota. The Bulls loaded up on second-round draft picks and did not get any first-rounders in return.

One of the players Chicago got in return was Jaden Ivey from Detroit. Chicago waived him following anti-LGBTQ+ comments about religion he made in videos posted on his Instagram account.

EAGLES, BUCCANEERS, COWBOYS, JETS AND DOLPHINS COULD BE AMONG THE ACTIVE TEAMS IN THE FIRST ROUND

Six teams enter the first round of the NFL draft without a pick. Six others have two picks apiece.

Let’s make a deal.

There have been 60 trades involving first-round picks over the past five years. Eighteen were traded in 2022. Last year, six first-round picks were dealt. That was tied for the fewest since 1985.

The Bengals, Packers, Jaguars, Falcons, Colts and Broncos don’t have a first-round pick while the Giants, Jets, Dolphins, Cowboys, Browns and Chiefs each have two.

Cincinnati traded the 10th overall pick to the Giants on Saturday for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. New York owns the fifth and 10th picks. Green Bay doesn’t have one because of its blockbuster trade for Micah Parsons last August. Jacksonville traded its 2026 first-rounder to Cleveland on draft night last year to move up to get Travis Hunter with the second overall pick.

Atlanta sent this year’s first-round pick to the Rams on draft night a year ago to select edge rusher James Pearce Jr. at No. 26. Indianapolis traded its first-rounder to the Jets for Sauce Gardner. Denver sent the 30th overall pick to Miami in the deal for Jaylen Waddle.

Here are five teams that could be active on Thursday night:

Philadelphia Eagles

General manager Howie Roseman is one of the most active and aggressive executives in the NFL. The Eagles own the 23rd pick. They moved up from No. 10 to No. 9 in 2023 to get defensive tackle Jalen Carter. A year earlier, they went from 15 to 13 to get defensive tackle Jordan Davis. In 2021, Philadelphia moved up from 12 to 10 to select wideout DeVonta Smith. Roseman also moved up in 2019 and 2016. He traded out of the first round in 2018.

“I think we go into this draft being very comfortable with having 23 guys we’re ready to take. We’re there ready and prepared for that,” Roseman said. “If something happens where somebody who’s higher on our board than 23rd is available, we’ll be ready for that. If there’s an opportunity that we think makes sense to move up based on the value of that player, we’ll move up. If we have multiple guys at our spot and there’s a trade that makes sense to move back, we’ll move back.”

The trade involving the Eagles that’s been a hot topic throughout the offseason isn’t expected to happen this week. A.J. Brown is likely on the move, with the Patriots expected to be the leading contender to land the star wide receiver, reuniting him with coach Mike Vrabel. The Rams already pursued Brown earlier in the offseason. The Eagles would be able to spread a $40 million salary cap hit over two seasons by waiting until June 1 to deal Brown.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With the 15th pick in the first round, the Buccaneers might miss out on one of the top players on their board. They need an elite rusher and could use more draft capital because they have only one pick in each round. There are several potential pass rushers who could be a fit in the 16-25 range that would allow Tampa Bay to move back and add more premium draft picks.

“In a lot of scenarios that we’re working through, yeah,” GM Jason Licht said about moving back. “You have a group of players that you say, ‘No matter what, if this player’s there, we’re taking (them).’ If there’s a group of three, then maybe you go back one or two to make sure that you ensure you get one of your three, but the part of that that makes it difficult is you’ve got to find a trade partner. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Sometimes teams just don’t want to move up. They don’t want to give up picks, and I understand why.”

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have the 12th and 20th picks, and Jerry Jones has hinted at being aggressive. But it would make more sense for Dallas to trade down in one of those spots to add extra picks because the defense has several needs.

The Cowboys don’t have a second-round pick after sending it to the Jets in a deal for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams before the trade deadline. Moving down from 20 and adding a second-rounder plus other picks is one scenario.

New York Jets

The Jets have four of the top 44 picks in the draft, including Nos. 2 and 16 in the first round. They have three 2027 first-round picks.

If there’s a player they covet — perhaps an elite wideout — they have the draft assets to jump up from 16. They have their choice of edge rushers at No. 2 after quarterback Fernando Mendoza goes first to the Raiders.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins have the 11th and 30th picks in the first round and plenty of needs. They’re in full rebuild mode. Trading one of those to add more picks could help Miami replenish its roster.

RAIDERS PICK NO. 1, THEN OHIO STATE DRAFT TAKEOVER BEGINS

Ohio State is not the reigning national champion in college football, and the Buckeyes are not expected to produce a fourth No. 1 overall selection when the 2026 NFL Draft kicks off with the Las Vegas Raiders on the clock Thursday night.

But you can bet your most sacred scarlet that the Buckeyes are money in the bank to pad their all-time total — 97 and counting — first-round selections soon after Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza is selected by the Raiders.

Anywhere between nine and 13 Ohio State players are projected to be drafted into the NFL this week, and five carry first-round grades one year removed from the 2025 national championship roster that produced four first-rounders: wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (No. 21, Buccaneers), offensive lineman Donovan Jackson (24, Vikings), defensive tackle Tyleik Williams (28, Lions) and offensive tackle Josh Simmons (32, Chiefs).

The 2021 Alabama team and the 2004 Miami squad share the record with six first-round selections in a single draft.

The wait for the Ohio State takeover of the 2026 draft might not be long. In fact, that first selection could come right after Mendoza hears his name called.

Buckeyes linebackers Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese are candidates to be selected No. 2 overall by the Jets. Styles put on an epic athletic display at the NFL Scouting Combine in February and Reese, who played a variety of positions in Matt Patricia’s defense, was right there with him. At 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds, Reese is being compared to Penn State-era Micah Parsons, the No. 12 pick in the 2021 draft and a three-time NFL All-Pro.

Reese is dripping with upside. He had 6.5 sacks at Ohio State in 2025 but was only a part-time pass rusher.

Only 20, Reese could add significant weight and convert to defensive end or focus on an edge/outside linebacker role. Because of his speed and power, there are also teams that discussed using him inside. The Cleveland native met with the Browns but he might not stick around long enough to stay in Ohio; the Browns have picks No. 6 and 24. He also had multiple meetings with the Arizona Cardinals, who pick third overall.

“I played everywhere from inside linebacker to (strong-side) to edge. I was comfortable everywhere,” Reese said, noting NFL teams are complimentary of his versatility. “It changes (with) each team, so it depends on the system and how the defensive coordinator thinks he’ll use me.”

Styles is a second-generation NFL prospect. His dad, Lorenzo Styles, was an NFL linebacker for the St. Louis Rams and Atlanta Falcons for six seasons. Lorenzo Styles Jr. is also part of the 2026 draft class. A Notre Dame transfer, Lorenzo Styles Jr. played safety — and started 11 games — for the Buckeyes last season.

At 6-5, 244, Sonny Styles stole the show at the combine. He ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, had a 43 1/2-inch vertical, broad jumped 11 feet, 2 inches and clocked a 4.26-second 20-yard shuttle. It points to his high school background as a five-star safety recruit.

The top tackler on Ohio State’s dynamic defense, Sonny Styles had only one missed tackle all season — and it came in the College Football Playoff — by the count of Buckeyes’ staff.

“I think the way I can improve the run defense is just being in the middle,” said Styles, a self-described film junkie. “I feel like I had a great feel of what was coming.”

Safety Caleb Downs is listed as a top-10 prospect by many evaluators, and he will be in the draft green room Thursday with his linebacker teammates, wide receiver Carnell Tate and defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.

All six could be selected in the opening round. Downs and Toledo’s Emmanuel McNeil-Warren are vying to be the top player picked at the position and Tate is another likely first-round receiver produced by the Buckeyes. He averaged 17.2 yards per reception last season and caught 14 TD passes in three seasons at Ohio State.

McDonald turned 21 last month and was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2025. He had 65 tackles and nine tackles for loss last season as the thick and powerful roadblock to interior linemen trying to get their hands on Reese and Styles.

NHL

NHL ROUNDUP: LIGHTNING RALLY, BEAT CANADIENS IN OT TO EVEN SERIES

J.J. Moser scored 12:48 into overtime, giving the host Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday and evening their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series at one win each.

Tampa Bay fully controlled the game in the extra period and was rewarded when Moser found the net. He gained the puck off a faceoff win in the offensive zone, worked his way to a shooting position at the top of the right circle and wired a top-corner shot for his first career playoff tally.

Montreal, which won Game 1 in overtime, was outshot 9-0 in overtime of Game 2. The series shifts to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday.

Tampa Bay’s Brandon Hagel collected a goal and an assist. Nikita Kucherov tallied once, Anthony Cirelli collected two assists and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves for Tampa Bay, which snapped a collection of playoff swoons.

Avalanche 2, Kings 1 (OT)

Nicolas Roy scored at 7:44 of overtime to lift Colorado to a win against Los Angeles in Denver, giving the Avalanche a 2-0 lead in a Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Gabriel Landeskog scored the tying goal late in regulation and Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves for the Avalanche. During the regular season, Wedgewood led the NHL in goals-against average (2.02) and save percentage (.921).

Anton Forsberg made 34 saves for the Kings in his second career postseason start, both in the current series. He has allowed two goals or fewer in eight of his past nine starts.

Bruins 4, Sabres 2

Visiting Boston scored three second-period goals and held off a late Buffalo rally to even the teams’ Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series at one victory apiece.

Bowen Byram and Peyton Krebs scored as Buffalo climbed within 4-2 in the closing minutes. Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen allowed four goals on 19 shots before Alex Lyon entered in relief following Arvidsson’s second marker, which came just 16 seconds into the third period.

Twins 5, Mets 3

Luke Keaschall’s second RBI single of the game snapped a ninth-inning tie and helped visiting Minnesota rally past slumping New York.

In losing its 12th straight game, New York coughed up a 3-0 lead as closer Devin Williams melted down during the top of the ninth. Williams (0-1) didn’t retire any of the five hitters he faced, walking three. Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer in the Mets’ three-run third inning.

Minnesota’s bullpen retired all 12 hitters it faced. Cole Sands (1-1) pitched the last two innings to earn the win, fanning Tyrone Taylor for the last out. Byron Buxton hit a two-run shot to get the Twins on the board in the sixth.

Ildemaro Vargas hit a three-run homer in the ninth for the Diamondbacks, extending his season-opening hitting streak to 16 games. Merrill Kelly (1-1) was tagged for eight runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Cardinals 5, Marlins 3

Nathan Church slugged a two-run homer and Alec Burleson also drove in a pair of runs as visiting St. Louis defeated Miami.

St. Louis, which has won six of its past seven games, also got 5 1/3 strong innings from Dustin May (3-2). Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventh save. Cardinals star Jordan Walker had his 15-game hitting streak broken.

Miami was led by Jakob Marsee, who finished 3-for-4, including a homer leading off the bottom of the first. Marlins starter Chris Paddack (0-4) struck out seven but gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings.

Guardians 8, Astros 5

Closer Cade Smith gave up an RBI single in the ninth to major league homer and RBI leader Yordan Alvarez in a non-save situation. Padres 1, Rockies 0

Randy Vasquez pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits for San Diego, which squeaked out a rare shutout victory over Colorado in Denver.

It marked just the fourth time in Rockies history they lost a 1-0 game at Coors Field. The other three instances happened in 2006, with the Milwaukee Brewers last beating Colorado by that score on Aug. 1, 2006.

Vasquez (2-0) struck out five without issuing a walk in San Diego’s third straight win. The right-hander outdueled Chase Dollander (2-2), who threw six strong innings but had a lapse of wildness in the sixth that sent the Rockies their second straight defeat.

Athletics 5, Mariners 2

Jeff McNeil and Shea Langeliers hit home runs as the Athletics defeated host Seattle, clinching a series victory against their American League West rivals.

A’s left-hander Jacob Lopez (2-1) earned the victory by allowing two runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Right-hander Jack Perkins pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season.

Cal Raleigh homered for a second consecutive night for the Mariners, who have dropped six of their past eight games. The A’s broke a 2-2 tie against reliever Eduard Bazardo (0-1) in the sixth. The loss was the first of Bazardo’s six-year career after eight consecutive victories.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

THOMAS HAUGH, POTENTIAL NBA LOTTERY PICK, RETURNS TO FLORIDA

Potential NBA lottery pick Thomas Haugh will return to Florida for his senior season, he told ESPN on Tuesday.

Haugh becomes the third starter from the Gators’ 2025-26 Southeastern Conference championship team to announce his return for the upcoming season, joining fellow forward Alex Condon and guard Boogie Fland. Starting center Rueben Chinyelu announced Monday that he is maintaining his eligibility throughout the NBA draft process.

“Most guys in my position in the draft, it would be a no-brainer to go to the NBA,” the 6-foot-9, 215-pound Haugh told ESPN. “It’s not just the NIL. It’s a chance to play with my boys. To play for coach (Todd) Golden. To go to the school I love to play for. It was definitely a tougher decision than last year, but it was best for my career and future.”

Haugh received second-team All-American honors and first-team All-SEC honors this past season, averaging 17.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He collected 19 points and six rebounds in top-seeded Florida’s 73-72 setback to ninth-seeded Iowa in the second round of the South Region in the NCAA Tournament on March 22.

“I think that lit a fire underneath me,” Haugh said of the NCAA Tournament loss. “I (didn’t) want my last memory of Florida basketball to be that.”

Haugh, who won a national championship with the Gators in 2024-25, has averaged 10.1 points an 5.3 rebounds in 110 career games (41 starts) at Florida.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS

COURT RULES AGAINST SAN DIEGO STATE IN LANDMARK TITLE IX CASE

San Diego State must pay a group of former female athletes at the university a total of $300,000 for violating federal law, U.S. District Judge Todd Robinson ruled.

The ex-athletes and the school agreed to an out-of-court settlement in the case last year, which focused on whether San Diego State violated Title IX anti-discrimination laws. Robinson signed off on the agreement on Monday in San Diego.

San Diego State also agreed to pay $1.3 million in legal fees to the attorneys who saw the case through the court system for the plaintiffs.

All of the women were scholar-athletes with the Aztecs in a time span from 2018 moving forward.

The women filed the lawsuit in 2022, accusing the school of giving more money to the male athletes. San Diego State officials declined that was true nd decided to fight it.

“SDSU intentionally chose not to fund women’s  sports for the full amount of aid permitted by the NCAA’s rules,” read the lawsuit. “It likewise intentionally chose not to permit the coaches of women’s teams to award the full amount of aid permitted by the NCAA’s rules. Those decisions harmed all Plaintiffs. The same dollar limits were not placed on many of SDSU’s men’s teams, including, for example, the men’s football team.”

In all, each of the 798 women who took part in the class-action lawsuit will receive a sum of money that won’t be life-changing by any means; each share is about $375. But Arthur Bryant, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, said this case was about much more than money.

“These women have made history,” Bryant told USA Today on Monday. “This is the first case ever in which a school is going to pay damages to women athletes for depriving them of equal athletic financial aid. It is definitely not going to be the last. And SDSU is going to comply with Title IX.”

The university also said it would provide equipment and off-field services to women that equal what the men get. In this case, San Diego State agreed to put replacement turf of the field used by women’s lacrosse and to provide “professional photography services and publicity equitably to men’s and women’s teams.”

San Diego State has 30 days to pay the money due.

COLTS FOOTBALL

ANTHONY RICHARDSON TRADE SITUATION REFLECTS COLTS’ QB UNCERTAINTY

Quarterback Anthony Richardson has made it clear that he wants a trade from the Indianapolis Colts.

Whether or not (and when) that happens remains to be seen.

“We’ve had some calls, but nothing’s come to fruition at this time,” Colts GM Chris Ballard said Monday. “So at this point he’s still an Indianapolis Colt.”

Ballard also said Richardson is “still recovering a little bit” from a freak eye injury that ended his 2025 season. Ballard added that Richardson has been cleared for football activity.

Richardson expressed his desire to be traded after the Colts retained Daniel Jones, but Ballard is not planning to give away the player drafted fourth overall in 2023.

The Colts are taking into consideration that while Jones is on schedule to return from a season-ending Achilles injury, nothing is guaranteed and the team might be smart to hang onto Richardson if no attractive trade alternative emerges prior to training camp this summer. Both quarterbacks have had issues staying on the field.

And the Colts are not exactly overflowing with experience at the signal-caller position. Richardson has started a mere 15 games during the three seasons of his career, a time period plagued by injuries and inconsistency. He did not play last season at all.

Riley Leonard, a sixth-round pick in 2025, started just one game last season, and that was only after the Colts were eliminated from playoff contention.

That leaves the Colts with a lack of clarity at quarterback: One is recovering from a significant injury, one wants a trade out, and a third will be looking for offseason reps to become a suitable backup while the GM works out a deal. Or not.

INDIANA BASEBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Indians utilized three homers – highlighted by a 466-foot home run by Rafael Flores Jr. to match the longest long ball hit at Victory Field since tracking began in 2023 – to defeat the St. Paul Saints and clinch their first series-opening victory of 2026 on Tuesday night, 7-5.

Flores Jr.’s massive home run, which bounced off the light pole in left-center field, is the third-longest home run in professional baseball this season, trailing Bryce Rainer’s 477-foot homer with Single-A Lakeland on April 10 and Shea Langeliers’s 467-foot homer with the Athletics on April 15. It also matched Joshua Palacios’ walk-off dinger vs. Louisville on July 26, 2023, for the longest home run by an Indians batter since that season.

The 466-foot blast was sandwiched by a solo homer by Nick Cimillo in the first inning and a three-run shot in the fourth by Ronny Simon to give the Indians (7-15) a 6-1 lead after four innings. Six of Indy’s seven runs came against starter Mike Paredes (L, 0-1).

The Saints (9-12) put up four runs on a pair of two-run homers in the fifth, but the rally fell quiet through the end of the game against Joe La Sorsa (W, 1-0) and Beau Burrows (S, 1).

Indianapolis will look to go up 2-0 on the series tomorrow at 6:05 PM. LHP Hunter Barco (0-0, 7.71) will make his first start of the season for Indy against RHP Andrew Bash (0-1, 4.41).

IU BASEBALL

MUNCIE, Ind. – With the wind blowing out and the sun shining down, the Indiana Baseball team (19-22, 6-12) enjoyed some friendly offensive conditions at the ballpark on Tuesday (April 21) afternoon. Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny hit a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs to help the Hoosiers to a dominant 20-10 win over Ball State (19-21, 13-8 MAC) at Shebek Stadium.

Freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever has a knack for the big moments and proved that in Tuesday’s win. He came to the plate with the bases loaded in the first inning and smashed a grand slam over the wall. Additional RBIs in the inning from Denny and sophomore outfielder Cole Decker helped IU to a 6-0 lead before its defense even took the field.

Denny, Decker and ten Oever combined to go 9-15 with three home runs and 15 RBIs. Denny finished a triple short of the cycle after producing two home runs, a double and a single. He was walked in his final appearance at the plate to hold him from IU’s first trip around the cycle since 2008. Freshman second baseman Landen Fry matched his career high with three hits in the game.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski was fantastic in a three-inning start to the game. He allowed just two earned runs (both unearned) and left the game with a 13-2 lead to his name. Senior left-handed pitcher Anthony Gubitosi (W, 2-0) had the best relief appearance of the bunch. He worked 2.2 scoreless frames with a pair of punchouts. Redshirt sophomore righty Evan O’Neill worked the final frame.

IU’s offensive output was the ninth 20-run performance under head coach Jeff Mercer. In a twist of irony, it’s only the second in a game against midweek pitching (20 – vs. Kentucky; March 15, 2022). The Hoosiers have scored 20-or-more runs in a game in every one of Mercer’s completed seasons in Bloomington.

An important weekend awaits the Hoosiers in a return to conference play this weekend (April 24-26). Iowa makes the trip to Bart Kaufman Field with a one-game lead on IU in the conference standings. IU will look to jump above the cut line for the Big Ten Tournament with a series victory in Bloomington.

Inside the Box Score

• All 10 players that recorded a plate appearance scored at least one run for the Hoosiers.

• Three different Hoosiers drove in at least four runs.

• IU walked 12 times but its pitching staff only allowed two walks.

Notes to Know

• The Hoosiers put together a masterful performance at the plate with 20 runs and 15 hits. It was the ninth 20-run performance of the head coach Jeff Mercer era and the first since March 2, 2025 (20 – vs. Mount St. Mary’s). It’s just the second time that IU has done it in a midweek contest in that stretch.

• Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny had his fourth multi-home run contest with a three-run blast in the fourth inning and a solo shot in the sixth inning. He recorded a career high seven RBIs in the win. It’s the first time IU has had a player with seven-or-more RBIs in a game since April 21, 2024 (Jasen Oliver, 8 – at Minnesota).

• Freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever smashed an early grand slam to break Tuesday’s game open. It was IU’s first grand slam since April 7, 2025 (Caleb Koskie vs. Michigan State). On the season, ten Oever has hit both a pinch hit three-run blast and a grand slam for his only career home runs.

• Sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian extended his hitting streak to 13-straight games in the victory. He did so with just two official at-bats. He recorded a career high four walks and scored three times out of the three hole. Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie didn’t play and will have to hold on extending his streak.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After earning her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor on Monday, Moore picked up two National recognitions, being named D1 Softball’s Freshman of the Week and Softball America’s Freshman Star of the Week.

Moore earns Purdue’s first Softball America Star of the Week honor this season, and garners her second D1 Softball National Freshman of the Week honor.

Moore went 7-for-15 this week with 14 RBI and six runs scored, including three home runs. The freshman batted .467, while slugging for 1.200 with a .529 on-base percentage. Moore also had a team-leading five extra-base hits with her three homers and two doubles.

With now 11 homers on the season, Moore broke Purdue’s Freshman home run record, and now just sits four away from breaking the all-time mark. Moore is also poised to break Purdue’s single season RBI mark sitting at 51 on the season and needing just four more.

Moore went 3-for-4 with 6 RBI, three runs scored, and two home runs, including a grand slam, the record-breaking home run, in game one at Rutgers. This was Moore’s second two-homer game of the season. In game two against the Scarlet Knights, Moore went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI and one run scored.

Against Miami Ohio, Moore went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, her ninth of the season which helped to lead Purdue to the 8-0 shutout victory.

Moore is the only Big Ten freshman this season to earn Freshman of the Week three times and is just one of two Freshmen to earn D1 Softball’s honor twice this season (Morgan Talley, NC State).

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue (32-15, 9-9 Big Ten) goes perfect on the day, beating UIC (12-2) and IU Indy (9-1) to extend their win streak to six-straight.

Purdue had a record-breaking night to close the non-conference season at Bittinger Stadium.

The Boilers broke the 23-year-old single-season RBI record, with their 267th on the season. The RBI was on a single from Moriah Polar, who sent her own record earlier in the evening. With Polar’s 86th hit of the season, she broke Purdue’s single-season hits record, previously set by Ashley Hall in 2007.

In game two against IU Indy, Purdue broke a single-game record, blasting five home runs, the most in program history. Delaney Reefe and Haley Painter each had two homers a piece, setting a new career-high for Reefe and tying Painter’s.

The five homers for the Boilers tied the single-season team record at 44, needing just one more to break the mark from the 2007 Boilers.

PURDUE BASEBALL

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Avery Moore, Trey Swiderski and Quincy Malbrough all hit home runs for Purdue Baseball while accounting for four of the Boilermakers’ five runs, but a five-run third inning carried Indiana State to a 6-5 victory Tuesday at Alexander Field.

The game featured an 80-minute lightning/rain delay in the bottom of the seventh inning, forcing the stadium to be emptied after the game attracted a crowd of 2,312 – sixth most in Alexander Field history. There was a combined attendance of 10,430 during the five-game homestand that concluded Tuesday, most since a May 2024 homestand.

The Sycamores (22-19) sent 10 men to the plate while opening up a 5-0 lead in the third inning. Indiana State’s 7-8-9 hitters teamed up for three consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits that accounted for four of the five tallies. The first out of the frame actually came at the plate on a 5-2 fielder’s choice.

March 31 in Terre Haute, ISU scored seven times in the fourth inning on its way to a 12-4 victory.

Moore drove in the Boilermakers’ first three runs with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third and an RBI single in the fifth inning, extending his on-base streak to 15 consecutive games and hit streak to 10 games. He’s the fifth Boilermaker to post a 10-game hit streak this season. That’s a first for the program since the 2011 campaign.

Swiderski pinch hit in the eighth inning as Purdue (28-12) opted against a lefty-lefty matchup of CJ Richmond and Jaxson Sparks. Swiderski hit the first pitch over the fence in left field for his fourth home run of the season, joining Jimmy Dionne as Boilermakers with a pinch-hit homer this year. After a pitching change, Malbrough took Jack Armstrong deep to left center for his first home run in a Purdue uniform.

The Boilermakers hit back-to-back jacks for the second time this season, with Swiderski being part of both pairings. He hit the back half of the consecutive home runs – following a grand slam by Brandon Rogers – in the first inning of the March 25 home win vs. UIC. This century, Purdue also had multiple games with back-to-back home runs in 2003, 2006, 2010, 2021 and 2024.

STREAKS EXTENDED

• Eli Anderson: 16-game hit at home

• Avery Moore: 15-game on-base; 10-game hit; 9-game on-base at home; 7-game hit at home

• Quincy Malbrough: 11-game-hit; 11-game on-base at home; 10-game hit at home

• Westin Boyle: 10-game on-base; 7-game on-base at home

• CJ Richmond: 6-game on-base at home

• Gavin Beuter: 9 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run

On the mound for the Boilermakers, Joe Trenerry and Gavin Beuter both worked two scoreless innings of relief. Trenerry picked off a runner at first base before he threw the first pitch of his outing and went on to retire all five batters he faced. He was only lifted because of the weather delay. Beuter has not been charged with an earned run in any of his last four appearances. He pitched 6 1/3 innings of three-hit relief on the homestand.

Jarvis Evans got the final out of the top of the third as Purdue’s third pitcher of the frame. He went on to post zeros in the fourth and fifth innings while retiring seven of the first eight batters he faced. But a leadoff double led to a run in the top of the sixth and that tally proved to be the game-deciding run after the home runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The back-to-back homers were really the only bright spots for Purdue offensively after Moore’s RBI single. Indiana State picked off two Boilermakers on the same play to end the fifth inning after pitcher Carson Seeman unexpectedly threw behind the trail runner at first base. Richmond’s leadoff single was erased by a 5-4-3 double play the following frame, Purdue stranded a pair of runners in both the seventh and eighth innings. Armstrong struck out a pair while working a 1-2-3 inning vs. the 2-3-4 portion of the lineup in the bottom of the ninth.

The Boilermakers are back in action Friday when they open a three-game series at No. 21 USC in their first trip to the state of California since the 2017 spring break trip. First pitch is set for 10 p.m. ET.

She has one season of eligibility remaining after playing two seasons at Boston College and last season at PFW.

BUTLER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Butler head coach Ronald Nored has hired veteran assistant Kotie Kimble as a member of his initial Bulldog coaching staff. Kimble arrives with more than 20 years of experience, most recently helping Furman to the 2026 NCAA Tournament and Miami (Fla.) to the 2023 Final Four.

“I’m really excited to welcome Kotie and his family to Butler,” said Nored. “He’s widely respected throughout the industry as a recruiter and relationship-builder. He has been the coordinator for both efficient offenses and strong defenses, developing all-conference players at each of his coaching stops. Kotie brings a tremendous amount of experience and success to our program, and I’ll lean on him heavily as we build our program.”

In May 2023, Kimble was one of six select Division I men’s basketball assistant coaches who participated in the prestigious Champion Forum, hosted by the NCAA’s leadership in Indianapolis. In July 2020, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman ranked Kimble as a top-five assistant coach in Conference USA based off an anonymous poll of 20-plus coaches in the league.

AS AN ASSISTANT AT FURMAN (2025-26)

Kimble spent the 2025-26 season at Furman, helping the Paladins to 22 wins, the Southern Conference Tournament championship, and an appearance in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Alex Wilkins was named a finalist for the 2025-26 Kyle Macy Award, presented annually to the top freshman in NCAA Division I college basketball. Wilkins also was named one of 30 finalists for the 2026 Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the NCAA Division I Mid-Major Player of the Year.

AS AN ASSISTANT AT MIAMI (FLA.) (2022-25)

During his three seasons in Coral Gables, Fla., Kimble helped Miami to 51 victories, including a record-setting 2023 campaign as the Hurricanes posted a 29-8 (15-5 ACC) record, claimed a share of the ACC regular season title, and made their first trip to the Final Four. Miami set or tied program bests in overall, ACC, regular season (24), home (16), top-25 (seven), top-10 (three), and top-five (two) wins en route to finishing a program-high third in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

Under Kimble’s leadership, Isaiah Wong won ACC Player of the Year and earned NABC Third Team All-America honors, while Jordan Miller was a second team All-ACC choice and Norchad Omier garnered third team All-ACC status. Wong and Miller were both selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft.

AS AN ASSISTANT AT CHARLOTTE (2018-22)

A renowned recruiter, Kimble helped Charlotte sign the top class in Conference USA in each of his four years there. Included in that group was Jahmir Young, who twice received All-CUSA first-team accolades and won 2020 CUSA Freshman of the Year.

Inheriting a program that went 6-23 in 2017-18, the year before he arrived alongside head coach Ron Sanchez, Kimble helped Charlotte to a 16-13 campaign in 2019-20, good for the team’s most wins since 2013-14. Two years later, during the 2021-22 season, the 49ers exceeded that overall win total by going 17-14. Charlotte also again finished 10-8 in CUSA play, giving the team multiple winning league records in a three-year stretch for the first time since 2003-06.

AS AN ASSISTANT AT WILLIAM & MARY (2011-18)

Kimble spent seven years at the College of William & Mary, coaching a total of 17 CAA All-Academic Team honorees. From 2013-18, the Tribe had the best five-year stretch in program history, posting a combined mark of 96-62, including a 54-34 record in CAA action.

William & Mary won 17-plus games all five seasons and tallied double-digit conference triumphs each time. The Tribe won 20 games three years in a row, 2013-16, for the first time since 1949-51. In 2014-15, William & Mary won the CAA regular season title for the third time ever and first since 1998. That year, the Tribe went 20-13 (12-6 CAA), reached the NIT for the third time in program history and made the CAA Tournament title game for the second year in a row.

During Kimble’s final year on staff in 2017-18, William & Mary became the first team in NCAA history to shoot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent at the line in a season. The Tribe led the nation in the latter two categories, at 43.4 and 81.1 percent, respectively. Kimble helped the team to a school-record 85.0 points per game, the third-best mark in CAA history. In addition, over Kimble’s final six years in Williamsburg, Va., the Tribe was one of only two teams, alongside Gonzaga, to rank top-30 nationally in field-goal percentage each season. He helped recruit and develop three 1,000-point scorers, including the program’s all-time leading scorer, Marcus Thornton, who tallied 2,178 points and won 2014-15 CAA Player of the Year honors.

AS AN ASSISTANT AT UNC-ASHEVILLE (2008-11)

Kimble got his coaching start at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, working under Eddie Biedenbach. The Bulldogs won double-digit Big South games, posted a winning conference record and finished top-four in the league each season. In 2010-11, UNC Asheville went 20-14 (11-7 Big South) and won the league tournament to earn the second NCAA Tournament berth in program history. Once in the field, the Bulldogs beat Arkansas-Little Rock to earn their first NCAA Tournament victory.

Additionally, that UNC Asheville team was just the second since 1986 to win 20 games. It finished No. 11 in the nation in defensive turnover percentage, per KenPom, a 223-spot improvement from the prior year. Two Bulldogs earned All-Big South distinction and three garnered All-Big South Tournament accolades, including Matt Dickey claiming first-team All-Big South honors and Big South Tournament MVP recognition.

AS A STUDENT ASSISTANT AT COASTAL CAROLINA (2003-07)

During his time as an undergraduate at Coastal Carolina, he served as a student assistant for two years under Pete Strickland and two under Buzz Peterson.

Kimble helped the Chanticleers to a 20-10 (12-4 Big South) record in 2005-06, as the team finished second in the league and made the conference tournament championship game. Led by Jack Leasure, the Big South Player of the Year, it marked the program’s first 20-win campaign since 1992-93.

PERSONAL

Kimble and his wife, JaNae, have one daughter, Kennedy Blair. A native of Edgefield, S.C., Kimble graduated from Coastal Carolina University in 2007 with a degree in history.

The Sycamores (22-19) led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning courtesy of a five-run second inning that featured Jeremy Martinez, Caleb Niehaus, and Nomar Garcia RBI hits, while Emil Estrella scored on a throwing error after stealing third base. Pinch-hitter Trey Swiderski connected on a one-out solo home run to left field bringing Jack Armstrong (S, 2) to the mound for the Sycamores, where Quincy Marlbrough greeted him with a solo home run over the wall in left center to make it a one-run ballgame.

After the Sycamores were unable to score in the top of the ninth, Armstrong went to work in the bottom of the frame, retiring all three Boilermakers in order, getting Avery Moore to strike out swinging to end the contest.

Carter Beck and Caleb Niehaus had multi-hit efforts for the Sycamores, while Nomar Garcia drove in a pair of RBIs in the Indiana State win. Colin Sander and Caleb Niehaus both doubled, while Emil Estrella added two stolen bases.

Purdue took two back in the bottom of the third on Avery Moore’s two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The score was 5-3 after Avery Moore’s RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring Aaron Manias.

Indiana State went back up 6-3 in the top of the sixth as Carter Beck followed Colin Sander’s leadoff double with an RBI single up the middle.

Caden Miller’s on-base streak reached 20 consecutive games after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning.

April 24 – Bradley (13-31, 6-14 MVC) – noon DH

April 25 – Bradley – 2 p.m.

Next Up in Valpo Softball: The Valpo softball team begins the penultimate week of the regular season with a Wednesday afternoon game at Indiana. The Beacons then return home for their final home series of the weekend, playing a three-game series against Bradley over Friday and Saturday afternoons. Saturday will serve as the program’s Senior Day, celebrating the seven members of the program’s senior class.

Previously: Valpo went 1-4 last week in MVC action – the Beacons dropped a doubleheader on Tuesday to UIC before making the trip to Drake, where they captured the opener before falling in the final two games.

Looking Ahead: The regular season wraps up next week with a mid-week game at Illinois before one final weekend series at Evansville.

Following Valpo Softball: Wednesday’s game at Indiana will be broadcast on BTN+, while all three games of the Bradley series are slated for broadcast on ESPN+. All will have live stats available via ValpoAthletics.com as well. Most home games and most MVC road games will be broadcast on ESPN+, while select nonconference games will have video streams depending on the host.

Head Coach Mike Armitage (37-57 [.394] at Valpo, 2nd season; 106-124 [.461] overall, 5th season): Mike Armitage is in his second season as head coach of the Valpo softball program after being hired as head coach on June 6, 2024. In his first year at Valpo, Armitage guided the Beacons to 20 wins – the program’s winningest season since 2018 and an 11-win improvement over the previous season. Valpo posted a six-win improvement within MVC play, finishing with its highest total of Valley wins, its most MVC series wins and its best Valley regular season finish since 2018 as well. Prior to Valpo, Armitage spent three seasons as head coach at Minnesota State Moorhead, posting the first back-to-back 30-win seasons in MSUM program history in 2023 and 2024 after inheriting a Dragons program which had not finished above .500 since 2007.

Series Records: Indiana – Valpo is looking for its first win in program history over the Hoosiers, entering Wednesday’s game 0-13 all-time against IU. The two programs last met two seasons ago in a pair of games as part of the Hoosier Classic, with the Beacons falling 8-6 and 10-0 in those contests.

Bradley – Valpo owns an 11-17 record against the Braves, including a 10-13 mark since joining the MVC. Last season, the Beacons claimed a 2-1 triumph in the season series, winning the first two games, 1-0 and 8-4, before dropping the finale, 4-3. The Braves got their revenge in the MVC Tournament, however, earning a 3-2 win in eight innings.

Scouting the Opposition: Indiana – The Hoosiers enter Wednesday’s game with a 34-12 overall record and are 12-6 within Big Ten play, most recently taking two of three games from Iowa. As a team, the Hoosiers hit .348, with only one regular hitting below the .300 mark – Aly VanBrandt is the team’s top hitter, OPSing 1.308 with 55 runs scored and 51 RBIs. In the circle, six different pitchers have seen action, with four of them tossing at least 49 innings – Ella Troutt has thrown a team-high 90.1 innings and is 10-6 with a 2.48 ERA and 49 strikeouts.

Bradley – The Braves enter the week with a 13-31 overall record, including a 6-14 mark in MVC play – they took one of three last weekend in a home series against Evansville and take on Western Illinois in mid-week action before arriving in Valpo. Morgan Schlosser is hitting a team-best .318, while Ashley Breeding leads BU with 40 runs scored and 34 RBIs. In the circle, Abby Rusher has been a workhorse, tossing over half the team’s innings – she is 7-18 with a 5.74 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 146.1 innings of work.

Power-ing Up the Schedule: Since head coach Mike Armitage’s arrival prior to last season, Valpo has had a marked increase in challenging higher-level opposition in midweek competition. This year’s slate features five scheduled midweek games against Power Four and Big East competition (although the DePaul game was rained out), while last year’s schedule had three such games. In the four years prior to Armitage taking over the program, Valpo had a combined two midweek games against such competition.

Celebrating the Seniors: Saturday will mark Senior Day for the softball program, as a group of seven seniors are celebrated for their contributions to the Beacons. It is a group which has taken many different paths to get here – Kaia Garnica, Kim Rodas and Lyna Vasquez have spent four years at Valpo; Sydney McDermott has spent three years here enrolled in the five-year accelerated PA program; Mack Gallagher and Azalya Lopez have spent two years here apiece after transferring from MSU Moorhead; and Grace Hollopeter has spent her final year of collegiate softball here after transferring from Purdue Fort Wayne.

Seniors on the All-Time Charts: A number of the Beacon seniors hold spots on the program’s career top-10 charts. Mack Gallagher’s 68 walks are seventh-most in program history, while her .427 on-base percentage at Valpo would rank sixth all-time. Azalya Lopez’s nine career saves are third-most in program history, while her .261 batting average against in the circle would rank tenth. Kim Rodas has drawn 64 career walks in her four years, tied for eighth-in program history, and she is just 10 assists away from cracking the top-10 in that category as well. Likewise, Sydney McDermott is just 12 strikeouts away from the top-10 in program history in the category.

Senior Day Success: If recent history is any indication, you should expect a successful Saturday at the ballpark as the Beacons celebrate Senior Day. Since 2016, Valpo holds a 9-5 record in Senior Day games. Six of those wins have come by a single run, and four of those were of the walk-off variety. Last season, Valpo swept a Senior Day doubleheader against Drake with a pair of one-run wins after having entered the day with just one win over the Bulldogs in program history (1-19).

So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance: For the first time since Valpo’s first year in the MVC (2018), the Valley will not take every team to this season’s MVC Tournament, as just six teams will make the postseason event (a move mirroring other Valley sports: men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball all are six-team tournaments now as well). With that being the case, Valpo’s current chances of making the tournament are nearly zero, but there is still a mathematical path to qualify: the Beacons would need to sweep their last two MVC series versus Bradley and Evansville, Evansville would have to be swept in its three-game series versus UIC, UIC would have to be swept in its three-game series against Southern Illinois and Indiana State would have to win no more than two of its final eight games against Drake, Belmont and UNI – that would leave Valpo and Evansville tied at 11-16, with Valpo holding the tiebreaker, UIC at 11-17 and Indiana State at no better than 10-17.

WLL: For the fourth time this season out of their five three-game MVC series, the Beacons captured the opening game of their series at Drake last weekend before dropping the final two games. That exact order of results – winning the opener, losing the final two games – had happened for Valpo just twice in 55 three-game series since joining the Valley prior to the 2018 season – 2018 against UNI and 2024 against Belmont.

Gallagher Goes Deep: Senior Mack Gallagher not only put Valpo in front for good with her three-run homer in the fifth inning of the series opener at Drake Saturday, she also leapt onto a pair of the program’s single-season top-10 charts. She is now tied for eighth in a season in program history with nine home runs and is tied for ninth with 39 RBIs, while she also is fifth in walks (32) and eighth in on-base percentage (.467). Gallagher currently ranks second in the MVC in walks, sixth in RBIs, eighth in home runs and tenth in on-base percentage.

Getting On Base: Gallagher has been a consistent presence on the basepaths for Valpo this season. She opened the season with a 27-game on-base streak and has reached safely at least once in 37 of 42 games this year. Gallagher has reached base multiple times in a game on 19 occasions this year – twice in nine games, three times in six games and four times in four games.

V Stands For Very Good: Sophomore Madison Vrastil continued her standout second season at the plate last weekend against Drake, tallying at least one hit in all three games as she went 6-for-11. The sophomore had three hits in the opener and two hits in the middle game, giving her 20 multi-hit games this year. She already ranks seventh in a single season in program history with 21 stolen bases, good for second in the MVC, and her .381 batting average would currently rank her eighth in program history. With two weeks to play, she is also poised to crack top-10 single-season charts in doubles (13, 1 shy), hits (56, 3 shy) and runs scored (34, 4 shy).

Single-Game Records: Vrastil has impacted Valpo’s single-game record book on a pair of occasions this season. The sophomore stole four bases on the season’s opening day against Green Bay, establishing a new program single-game record, as the previous mark of three had been accomplished 14 times. More recently, Vrastil twice in a three-day span (March 13 nightcap at Murray State; March 15 opener at IU Indy) scored four runs in a single game, the 12th and 13th times in program history a player scored four runs in a game. Vrastil joins former Valpo greats Sara Strickland and Sam Stewart as the only players in program history to twice score four runs in a game.

For The Save: Senior Azalya Lopez took the ball for the final four outs of the win at Drake, giving up one hit and striking out two as she registered her fifth save of the season. Five saves are not only tied for fourth-most in a single season in program history, they are tied for the MVC lead and tied for fifth nationally.

Taking Down the Irish: Valpo earned its first win over Notre Dame since 1989 on April 8 in dramatic fashion, as Sophia Leitzen threw out the potential tying run at the plate from right field to secure the 3-2 win. The top four hitters in the Beacons’ lineup all reached base multiple times, including multi-hit games for Madison Vrastil, Kayden Krug and Mack Gallagher, as Valpo snapped a 37-game winning streak in the series for the Fighting Irish. It was the program’s first win over a Power Four opponent since a 4-0 win at North Carolina State March 5, 2019.

Snapping Streaks: The win over the Irish was the second consecutive outing that Valpo snapped a long winning streak in the series by its opponent, as the Beacons’ win at Illinois State April 3 snapped a 20-game ISU winning streak in that series. The 37-game streak snapped by the win over Notre Dame was the third-longest opponent’s winning streak snapped in program history – Valpo beat UIC in 2005 to snap a 42-game winning streak by the Flames, while the 2016 team beat DePaul to snap a 42-game winning streak for the Blue Demons.

All Hands on Deck: Normally if a team is throwing four different pitchers over the course of a seven-inning game, the opposition is probably putting up a number of runs, but that hasn’t been the case for the Beacons in their last two wins.

Notre Dame – McDermott (Start, 1.2 IP, 2 R), Quickle (2.2 IP, 0 R, W), Purdy (0.2 IP, 0 R), Lopez (2 IP, 0 R, SV)

Drake – McDermott (Start, 2 IP, 2 R), Purdy (2 IP, 1 R, W [first career]), Quickle (1.2 IP, 0 R), Lopez (1.1 IP, 0 R, SV)

BBs vs. Ks: One thing which jumps out immediately when you look at the Beacons’ stat sheet is the offense’s walk/strikeout ratio. This year’s team is nearly even in the two departments, entering this week with 157 walks and 163 strikeouts. Four regulars in the starting lineup have struck out ten or fewer times, while seven players have walked at least ten times. No team in program history has ever finished a season with more walks than strikeouts – the 2012 team owns the best single-season ratio (191 BB/251 K; .761), while last year’s team was close behind (170 BB/224 K; .759).

Sure Hands in the Outfield: Sophia Leitzen’s outfield assist to close the Notre Dame win was just the latest notable exploit from the Beacon outfielders. Go back to Valpo’s series finale versus UNI on March 22, which saw center fielder Marissa Jackson double up a baserunner in the fifth inning, and then Jackson and left fielder Kayden Krug were part of back-to-back putouts on the basepaths in the seventh inning. It was the first time Valpo tallied three outfield assists in a single game since its Horizon League Tournament opener against Butler on May 10, 2012, while Jackson became the first Valpo outfielder with multiple assists in the same game since Taylor Lawson had a pair at Northern Illinois on April 14, 2015. Jackson has played a flawless center field this year, racking up 72 putouts and six assists without an error – her 78 chances is the most of any Valley player with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF

The Valparaiso University men’s golf team posted its best round of the Hawkeye Invitational on Tuesday, closing out the event that was hosted by the University of Iowa at the par-72, 7432-yard Blue Top Ridge at Riverside in Riverside, Iowa this week. Redshirt junior Ryan Somerville turned in a career-low round on Tuesday.

How It Happened

Somerville finished with a 2-under 70, outdoing his previous career low by one stroke. He eagled the par-5 fourth hole as part of a red-hot first 10 holes of the day. After starting on Hole 16, he was six under for his first 10 holes of the round with four birdies, one eagle and no boxed-in numbers.

Somerville had his only rough patch of the day on a three-hole stretch from Hole 8 to Hole 10, playing those holes at +4 with two bogeys and one double. He ran off even par on each of the round’s final five holes to finish at -2. His strong third round helped him total 223 for the tournament, tied for 28th of 75.

Junior Elliot Lee made a six-stroke improvement from his Round-1 and Round-2 performances with a 71 (-1) on Tuesday to finish at 225 (t-38). He birdied four holes and was par or better on 16 out of 18.

Junior Adam Melliere had the team’s third-best score on Tuesday with a 74 (+2).

The Beacons played the final round at 292 (+4), the team’s best round of the event by 14 strokes. That allowed Valpo to finish at 905, climbing to 11th in the field. The Beacons finished ahead of Missouri Valley Conference foe UNI and former MVC adversary Missouri State. The Brown & Gold edged out Air Force by a single stroke for 11th.

The host Hawkeyes were team champs at 851 and had the individual medalist as No. 106 Ryan Shellberg finished 10 strokes under, holding off DePaul’s Dominic Lucchesi for the title as Lucchesi made up eight strokes on the final day to finish at -9.

Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring

“We finished the tournament with our best round of the three rounds today. We’re always striving to play our best golf as the tournament progresses, and the guys bounced-back well from yesterday with one of our best team scores of the year. Both Ryan and Elliot were under par for us today, and the two of them combined for eight birdies and an eagle. Their strokes gained stats in both approach shots and around the green were very positive numbers. Add to that, Elliot had 25 putts and Ryan had 29 putts in the final round. The sub-par scores are certainly a piece of a winning formula for our team, so it was great to see the two of them finishing the tournament so strong for themselves and our team.”

“Our birdie production was much improved today, with the team making 16 birdies on the day.  It was really good to see putts dropping for all six of our players and that gives us quality momentum during our rounds. We still sprinkled four double-bogeys into the scores that counted, but the windy conditions for the third consecutive round were certainly a challenge to manage throughout the day. This was our second consecutive tournament with a lot of wind, so we can chalk-up six rounds more experience in those conditions. The guys stayed very patient throughout the round, not trying to force shots and staying in-the-moment for each shot. It was a tough day for us yesterday, but these are the types of rounds that we can build on and further develop our confidence. We have a quick turnaround prior to the conference championship, but we know what we need to work on this week to be better prepared for this coming weekend.”

The Missouri Valley Conference Championship will begin on Sunday at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill. A link to live scoring via Clippd will be available on ValpoAthletics.com.

VALPO BASEBALL

Senior Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) launched a grand slam and redshirt freshman Javin Gauthier (De Pere, Wis. / De Pere) ripped a three-run homer, but the Valparaiso University baseball team fell 13-8 to Western Michigan on Tuesday afternoon at Emory G. Bauer Field. The game entered a lightning delay after five and a half innings at 4:51 p.m., and the 30-minute lightning timer kept resetting due to strikes in the vicinity. After a delay of over an hour with the threat of darkness looming, the umpires and teams called the game, which was official with over five innings played.

How It Happened

Valpo’s starting pitcher issued three walks and allowed two hits in the first inning and lasted just 1/3 of an inning as Western Michigan got out to an immediate 3-0 lead.

The Broncos poured on four more in the second to make it 7-0.

Valpo got back in the game in the bottom of the second. The first Valpo run crossed the dish on an RBI single by Gauthier, then Riley cracked a two-out, grand slam to center to make it 7-5.

An RBI single helped WMU pick up one in the third, but Valpo turned a double play to get out of the inning.

Valpo greeted a new WMU pitcher with a string of three straight hits to begin the bottom of the third, but a fielder’s choice with the out at home and two strikeouts ended the inning as a bases-loaded, no-out chance slipped away.

Western Michigan added to the lead in the top of the fifth, as a two-run double, RBI double and two-run homer boosted the edge to 13-5 after a five-run inning.

The Valpo bats responded in the last of the fifth, as Gauthier launched a two-out, three-run bomb to make it 13-8.

Freshman Joey Kafka (Mundelein, Ill. / Mundelein) worked a scoreless top of the sixth as he had the best inning of the day by any member of the Valpo pitching staff, as he was charged with no runs on one hit while walking none and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings. (Note that all stats do indeed count from the top of the sixth, there is a common misconception that the stats and score should revert back to the last complete inning, but that rule only applies if the lead changes hands in an incomplete inning).

Inside the Game

Riley’s grand slam was the first by a Beacon since Thomas Cooper on April 29 of last season, also against Western Michigan, that one in Kalamazoo.

Riley notched his first home run in a Valpo uniform and the 23rd of his collegiate career.

Riley extended his on-base streak to 21.

Riley and Gauthier each had four RBIs, with Riley setting a season high and Gauthier tying his season high set on Feb. 21 at USC Upstate.

Gauthier’s home run was his fifth of the season, tied for the second most on the team.

Gauthier and Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) had two hits apiece to lead the Beacons.

Up Next

The Beacons (9-27) will begin a three-game weekend series against Belmont on Friday at 3 p.m. at Emory G. Bauer Field. Admission is free and the game will air on ESPN+.

VALPO WOMEN’S GOLF

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team played the final round of the season on Tuesday, closing the campaign at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, hosted at the par-72, 5954-yard TPC Deere Run course in Silvis, Ill. Freshman Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) led the team for the tournament, while senior Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) closed out her collegiate career on Tuesday.

How It Happened

Estridge led the team for both the round and the tournament, carding an 81 on Tuesday to finish at 250, tied for 41st. Her Round-3 score was her best of the tournament, including a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole.

Junior Keira Cotter (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Guelph [Lake Superior State]) was second on the team for the round and the tournament with an 85 to finish at 259.

Skibinski golfed her final collegiate round, finishing the season with a team-best scoring average of 81.52. She golfed 88 rounds over her four years at Valpo.

Redshirt junior Katelyn McCoy (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) is undecided upon whether or not she will return for a fifth year. After redshirting as a freshman, she has golfed 63 rounds over the last three seasons.

As a team, Valpo golfed a 339 on Tuesday, its best round of the week. The Beacons finished 11th at 1,027.

Murray State clinched an NCAA Tournament berth by winning the league title, while Belmont’s Sloane Biddle punched her ticket to the Big Dance with medalist honors.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“It was a tough day, but a great season. We’ll regroup and be ready for next season!”

UINDY WOMEN’S LAX

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 3 UIndy women’s lacrosse team used a second half masterclass to stave off a frisky Northern Michigan group on Tuesday afternoon, 20-7.

The Greyhounds had six different players with at least two goals, including Malaena Michielin and Margaret Galloway who both had four each in Tuesday’s 13 goal win. The freshman, Galloway, had her best game in the crimson and grey, with her first career four goal game and her second game in three with at least five points.

Today the Greyhounds remained unbeaten all-time against the Wildcats, moving to a 7-0 all-time record, and averaging a 22.43 margin of victory in those seven games played.

INS & OUTS

UIndy wasn’t short of its normal offensive fire power in the first half, finding the back of the net eight times in the first 30 minutes of action. Sage Da Silva and Reese Fahlke both scored twice in the first half, while Ella Fornek, Galloway, Michielin, and Olivia Bladon all got in the scoring column as well early on.

The Hounds were able to stretch its lead up to four at one point during the second quarter, but were unable to stave off the Wildcats’ Josie Lacosky, who leads the nation in goals and added four more to her season total in the first half today, making it an 8-6 for the Hounds heading into the break.

With the Wildcats only trailing by two headed into the break, it marked the slimmest margin the Greyhounds have had when leading at the half of a game this season. But the second half script was completely flipped, as UIndy outscored Northern Michigan 12-1 the rest of the way.

UIndy’s defense was a large part in that second half surge, as the defense led by Hollis Rang, who had the assignment of defending Lacosky today, and Mariah Whitfield combined for three caused turnovers and two ground balls in the second half, with the team as whole combining for 12 caused turnovers and ground balls. The Hounds also kept the Wildcats scoreless for over 23 minutes of action spanning from the second quarter to the fourth.

On the other side of the ball, both Galloway and Michielin notched second half hat tricks, while Alexa Versac, Elle Cimini, and Sophia Griswold-Beltz all scored for the first time in today’s contest in the second half of play. Griswold-Beltz has now scored in four of the Hounds’ last six games, including her two goal game against William Jewell on Friday.

INSIDE THE BOX

– The Greyhounds had its most shots in a game with 50 since 2022 against Notre Dame (OH) when the team had 51.

– Versaci scooped up four ground balls today, tying herself with three other Hounds this season who have also had four in a game.

– Bladon had 10 draw controls today, making it six games in her career with at least 10 draw controls in one game.

– Megan Gehrt had a trio of assists today, bringing her season total up to 14.

UP NEXT

UIndy hits the road for its final two regular season games of the year against Missouri Western and Quincy on Friday April 24 and Sunday April 26, respectively. The Hounds will look to close the season out with its best regular season record since its national title winning season in 2022.

MARIAN SOFTBALL

UPLAND, Ind. – The Marian softball team won its first contest of the season against Taylor on Tuesday night, taking game two of their road doubleheader in Upland by an 8-7 final score. Marian lost game one by an 8-0 final score in five innings, and ended the day with a final record of 28-13 overall and 20-12 in Crossroads League play.

Game One | Marian 0-8 Taylor | 5 Innings

In the opening game of the afternoon, the Knights were no-hit for the first time in 2,534 days, as the Knights came up empty without a base knock in a five-inning game. Marian had a great opportunity to score in the first inning without a base hit as Abbey Hofmann was hit by the first pitch of the game, and Delaney Rundle was walked, but after each outfielder reached scoring position on a wild pitch, Marian came up without a timely hit to score a run. Marian’s only other inning with runners on base came in the second, as the Knights loaded the bags with a pair of free passes and a fielder’s choice, but a double play and strikeout would leave two runners in scoring position.

While the offense had woes, the defense found equal pains, as a pair of two-out doubles in the first inning against Lexi Smith helped the Trojans score a pair of runs, while the second inning saw two more hits against Smith bring in a Taylor run. Taylor followed the second inning with a three-run third, scoring off both Alayna Tesnar and Smith to take a 6-0 lead. Tesnar shut down the Trojans in order in the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth, she was unable to extend the game, giving up four base hits with the latter two scoring the seventh and eighth runs, sealing Marian’s fate in five innings.

Lexi Smith (7-5) took the loss in the game, allowing five hits and four runs in two-plus innings of work. Tesnar pitched 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Tesnar had Marian’s lone strikeout in the loss. Five Knights reached base without a hit in the contest, seeing Marian get no-hit for the first time since a loss to Baker in the 2019 NAIA Opening Round.

Game Two | Marian 8-7 Taylor

Marian looked to wash the taste of game one early in the second act of the doubleheader, as Abbey Hofmann quickly reached base with a bunt single. The junior was sacrificed to second and took third on a wild pitch, coming home on a throw from Abby Madere’s single. The 1-0 lead didn’t stick long for Marian, as three consecutive singles started the home half of the first for Taylor, while a one-out double against Macy Coan scored three runs. A sacrifice fly would bring home another, giving Taylor a 4-1 lead after the first complete inning.

Taylor would add to its lead in the bottom of the second inning as a double and an error brought in the first of two runs, while a wild pitch from Coan saw the second score in the frame, putting Marian in a deeper hole trailing 6-1.

The comeback effort for Marian started at the top of the third, as the Knights got one run back on a solo home run from Mati Hughes, cutting the margin to four. The Knights left three runners on base in the third, but rolled the momentum into the fourth inning when Abbey Hofmann and Abbey Madere traded places with doubles, and Lily Wendt brought home Madere on a dropped fly ball, bringing the Knights within two.

Marian remained in the fight as Coan logged three consecutive scoreless innings in the third through fifth frames, keeping the visitors in a 6-4 game. In the top of the sixth, Marian broke through again, getting a lead-off single from Delaney Rundle to spark a rally. Hughes followed with a base hit of her own, and after a pitching change, Ally Malone delivered an RBI single to give the team their fifth run. Mallorie Beutel followed with a two-RBI double, scoring Malone and Lily Wendt to give the Knights a 7-6 lead.

Coan protected the lead in the sixth as she scattered a single, and gained another run of support in the seventh inning as Hughes roped an RBI single, scoring Delaney Rundle to make the game an 8-6 contest. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Coan faced early adversity as she allowed a solo home run to Kaylee Larkin and yielded a two-out single, but forced three flyouts to the outfield to strand the tying run and close out Marian’s comeback 8-7 win.

The Knights made up for the no-hit loss in game one, putting up 14 base knocks in game two, getting a 3-5 performance from Mati Hughes. Hofmann, Madere, Beutel, and Alyssa Donaldson each had two hits in the win, with Donaldson putting up one of the team’s five doubles. Coan (13-3) logged a complete-game win in the outing, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs in the 8-7 win. Coan struck out three batters in her win.

Marian plays its final regular season road games of the season on Wednesday night, traveling to (RV) Indiana Wesleyan for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader.

TAYLOR SOFTBALL

UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor University softball team hadn’t taken a season series from Marian since 2014. The drought ended Tuesday as Claire Cullen threw a five-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 run-rule win in the doubleheader opener at Gudakunst Field.

It was TU’s third win of the season over the Knights, who entered the contest ranked No. 20, and the Trojans clinched the series. Marian won the nightcap 8-7 after staging a late comeback, but TU (23-21, 18-14 CL) still finished 3-1 in the regular season against the nationally-ranked Knights (28-13, 20-12 CL), winning two of those by run-rule decisions.

Cullen walked two, hit two and struck out four on 80 pitches, while earning her 10th win inside the circle. The Trojans collected 12 hits off Marian starter Lexi Smith and reliever Alayna Tesnar.

Lizzy Sinders went 3-for-3 with a season-high four RBIs, Grace Mullins added three hits and an RBI, Delaynee McCreary drove in a run and Kaylee Larkin doubled and scored twice.

The Trojans scored at least once in four of their five trips to the plate in the matchup. Larkin and Mullins each produced an RBI double in the first inning to put the Trojans ahead 2-0, before Sinders delivered her first of three RBI knocks in the third frame for a 3-0 lead.

Barton’s sacrifice fly pushed the margin to 4-0 in the third and three batters later, Sinders delivered a pair of runs on a two-out knock up the middle for a 6-0 lead. TU clinched the run-rule victory with back-to-back RBI singles by McCreary and Sinders in the bottom of the fifth.

The nightcap started in similar fashion when Mullins tied her season high RBI mark with a three-run double in the first. Ava Everman added a sacrifice fly, and the Trojans were quickly back in front 4-1 after an inning of play.

A Sinders double and a wild pitch in the second inning pushed TU’s advantage to 6-2.

However, the Trojans managed just one hit from the third through the fifth. MU’s Mati Hughes homered in the third, and two unearned Marian runs in the fourth cut the margin to 6-5.

Marian took the lead in the sixth when Ally Malone singled home Delaney Rundle to tie it, and Mallorie Beutel doubled down the right-field line two batters later to drive in two more. Hughes added an RBI single in the seventh for an 8-6 margin in favor of the visitors.

Larkin answered with a leadoff homer to ignite a rally attempt in the bottom of the seventh. It was the senior’s 10th blast of the season which bounced off the scoreboard deep in right-center field to pull the Trojans within a run at 8-7.

Then, Delaney Barton singled with two outs for her season-best third hit of the contest, but Taylor stranded the tying run at first. Marian center fielder Abbey Hofmann robbed an extra-base hit from Ava Everman during the rally, with a leaping catch up against the fence.

MU starter Macy Coan picked up her 13th win, going the distance in the circle with 139 pitches.

Taylor travels to Saint Francis for Thursday’s doubleheader before returning to Gudakunst Field on Saturday for its Senior Day twinbill against Goshen.

TAYLOR MEN’S LAX

DEARBORN, Mich. – The Taylor men’s lacrosse team dominated the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference clash at Michigan-Dearborn, surging past the hosts (6-10, 3-8 WHAC) for a 12-11 victory.

The win pushed TU’s program record single-season wins total to nine but more importantly, the road triumph locked Taylor into the fourth-seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament and guaranteed the Trojans their first-ever postseason game at Wheeler Field.

The back-and-forth affair kept the two sides close throughout, with UMD using a late third quarter flurry to open a small advantage at 11-8 heading to the final 15 minutes of action.

It would be all TU down the stretch, with Taylor outscoring the hosts by a 4-0 clip with a trio of strikes off the stick of Henry Cooper. An unassisted score from Cooper got the Trojans going with 9:53 remaining and Kaden Mast found Cooper for a second goal just over two minutes later to draw TU within a goal. The equalizer came at the 4:00 mark, with an unassisted goal from Mast, before Jackson Dale connected with Cooper for the eventual game-winner with 3:26 to play.

Cooper closed the night with five goals, with three coming in the decisive final rally, while Mast posted three goals and two assists. Will Saxby added two goals and one assist, with Dale dishing out four assists.

On the defensive end of the field, Dmitri Williams and Ricky Swift combined for five caused turnovers, Lucas Pacer and Grant Elzinga combined for 11 ground balls and Ben Harrell notched nine saves in goal.

The combo of Jack Roth and David Celesti also performed well in the faceoff game, winning 17-of-27 to set up the Trojan attack throughout the contest.

RV Taylor (9-7, 5-6 WHAC) will close its regular season on Saturday, April 25 with a 2:00 pm start at No. 1 Madonna (15-1, 11-0 WHAC), before hosting Michigan-Dearborn or Lawrence Tech (4-11, 3-8 WHAC) on Tuesday, April 28 in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
