In the 12th, Basallo broke a 2-2 tie with his second RBI single of the night. Nick Loftin produced a three-run double in the 12th, and Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez each had three hits. No cause of death was stated. Martin might be best remembered for his performance in Oakland’s title-winning victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 25, 1981, when he grabbed a still-standing Super Bowl-record three interceptions. The Raiders moved to Los Angeles ahead of the 1982 season, and they won another Super Bowl title to conclude the 1983 campaign. Martin had five tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in his team’s 38-9 rout of Washington on Jan. 22, 1984. Martin was Oakland’s 12th-round pick out of the University of Southern California in 1977. After appearing in just one game as a rookie, Martin became a mainstay in the Raiders’ lineup, starting 147 of his 165 career games. He made the Pro Bowl after 1983 and 1984 seasons, and he was selected first-time All-Pro in 1984, when he had career highs of 11 sacks and three forced fumbles. Martin wound up credited with 14 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries and 56.5 sacks, though sacks weren’t compiled as an official stat until 1982. ======================================== GOLF PGA CONFIRMS INTENTION TO END PRESENCE IN HAWAII The PGA revealed on Monday that it intends to end its tournament lineup in Hawaii in 2027. That news came on the heels of the 2026 Maui event having to be canceled due to drought-like conditions on the Plantation Course at Kapalua. The Sentry, formerly know as the Tournament of Champions, served as the starting-off point for the PGA Tour each January from 1986-2013 and 2024-25. This season’s cancellation created a less ceremonious January start to the PGA season at the Sony Open in Hawaii, at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, a week later than usual and The American Express, in La Quinta, Calif., after that. The star-studded Sentry event typically boasted the top 50 from the FedEx Cup final standings and all winners from the previous season. Overall, the PGA has hosted an event in Hawaii for more than 50 consecutive years. The Plantation course that hosted The Sentry had been involved in a water rights dispute with another local company that it had been unable to resolve, leading to the announcement of the cancellation of the 2026 event last October. The Sony Open on Oahu, an event which paired with The Sentry to enable golfers a two-week stay in the Pacific, has been caught in the crossfire and could be moved to the Champions Tour instead. The PGA Tour floated the possibility of pairing it with the senior circuit’s Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai going forward. Still, the PGA Tour stressed that more details about the 2027 schedule would be shared at a later date. In a press release, the PGA Tour addressed the larger move, saying in part, “We are grateful to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Kapalua Resort, Maui County and the state of Hawaii for their longtime support of our season-opening PGA Tour event, as well as the fans, partners and volunteers across Maui who have supported the event throughout the years.” Sentry’s event title sponsorship with the PGA Tour continues through 2035, leaving the organization in need of a tournament to lend its name to. Several executives reportedly visited Torrey Pines in San Diego this season, as that event’s partnership with Farmers Insurance is expected to end this year, according to multiple media outlets. Chris Gotterup won the Sony Open to begin the 2026 PGA season on Jan. 18. ================================ INDIANA HEADLINES/RELEASES INDIANA BASEBALL BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It will be a midweek rematch on Tuesday (April 21) afternoon as the Indiana Baseball team (18-22, 6-12 B1G) goes for the season sweep of Ball State. The Hoosiers won the first meeting on April 7th with six unanswered runs at Bart Kaufman Field. On the season, IU is 7-2 in midweek contests and 3-1 on the road in such games. IU’s offense has picked up with rapid pace since the month of April began. It has helped spark an 8-4 record over the last 12 games. In that stretch, IU has slugged 28 home runs – five of those from the red-hot sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie. He will be looking to push his hitting streak to 22-straight games on Tuesday. That would be the longest streak of any IU player in a single year over the last 21 seasons. A large cohort of arms will be potential options for the final two midweek games of the year. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski has been a big part of IU’s staff this season. He is tied for the team lead with 17 appearances and has pitched to a 4.34 ERA this year. He and redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Vogel have combined for 55 strikeouts and just 24 walks on the season. Head coach Jeff Mercer is 7-0-1 against Ball State in his time as the IU skipper. The last trip to Muncie, in 2024, was one of the weirder games he’s ever coached. The contest was called due to darkness after the 12th inning, resulting in the only tie of his collegiate coaching career. 20 different pitchers were used in that contest but no one could find the winning run. First pitch on Tuesday afternoon is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+. IU will return to Bart Kaufman Field for an important weekend series (April 24-26) against Iowa, beginning on Friday. Gameday Info at Ball State (Tuesday, April 21st – 3 p.m. ET) Live Video: bit.ly/4vD8HTW Live Audio: bit.ly/IUAudio Live Stats: bit.ly/46VZA6j Probable Starters Indiana vs. Ball State • Tuesday: RHP Ivan Mastalski, Fr. (1-0, 4.34 ERA) Leading Off KOSKIE’S STREAK: Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie hit in all three games of the Abilene Christian series, extending his career long hitting streak to 21-straight contests. Since 2005, it matches the longest single-season hitting streak by any IU player (Alex Dickerson – 2010, Chris Hervey – 2008). MR. APRIL: Koskie’s hot month has helped spark a resurgence of IU’s offense. He is hitting .500 (22-44) in 12 games in April with five home runs and 19 RBIs. As a team, the Hoosiers have slugged 28 home runs this month. IU is hitting a collective .331 in April. COOPER CONTINUES: Sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian has pushed his hitting streak to 12-straight games, hitting safely in every single game in the month of April. Not only is he seeing the ball well this month, but he’s also fielding at a perfect (1.000 clip) at shortstop. MIDWEEK SUCCESS: After winning a pair of games last week, the Hoosiers are now 7-2 in midweek contest this year. That includes a 3-1 mark on the road. In those nine games, IU is hitting .348 with 17 home runs. Koskie is hitting .571 (!) in midweek outings this year. BIG HIT HOOSIERS: Sophomore outfielder Cole Decker had his first career four-hit day on Friday in a win over Abilene Christian. He is the sixth player in that sophomore class with a four-hit day for the Hoosiers. Brayden Ricketts has been close to completing the full collection of four-hit efforts for that group. HOLDING IT DOWN: Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Vogel and freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski have been some of the go-to options for the Hoosiers. Both of them are tied for the team lead with 17 appearances this year. JUST JAKE: Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley has started 96-straight games since arriving on campus. Only Dustin DeMuth (102 – 2011-12) has begun their career with more consecutive starts since the 2010 season. Hanley has collected 126 hits in that stretch of play as well. Scouting the Opponent Ball State • It’s been just two weeks since these two teams have played. In that span, Ball State has won a series with Akron and taken a series loss to MAC co-leaders Kent State. Midweek struggles have come for the Cardinals all year. They have failed to win a game over a division one team in the midweek this year. • Sophomore infielder Brayden Huebner is carrying a big load for Ball State offensively. Inside the Series Ball State • Despite being two of the most competitive teams in the Midwest, IU has held a commanding advantage in the series over the last 10 years. The Hoosiers have won 10 of the last 11 games including a 6-4 win earlier this season. • Since head coach Jeff Mercer took over in 2019, IU has won seven of the eight meetings. The only other game was a 12-inning affair that was called a tie due to darkness. This will be just the third meeting in Muncie since he became the coach. ================================ INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries announced the addition of junior-to-be guard Darren Harris to the basketball program on Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET for the seventh midweek home date of the season at Alexander. The Boilermakers are 5-3 in midweek action this season, with all five of the victories coming at home. Tuesday and Wednesday games at Alexander Field feature $3 deals on hot dogs, beers and popcorn plus $5 general admission tickets (as presented by Indiana Packers). Indiana State rode a seven-run fourth inning to a 12-4 victory vs. Purdue in Terre Haute on March 31. Since then, the Boilermakers have compiled a 9-2 record in the month of April. The Sycamores are 7-5 this month, winning all three of their weekend series (vs. UIC and Wright State, at Illinois State), but dropping all three of their midweek games (at Illinois, vs. SIU Edwardsville and Indiana). Purdue is 3-1 vs. Missouri Valley Conference teams this season, with a May 1-3 weekend series vs. co-league leader Murray State still to come during the final homestand of the season at Alexander. The Boilermakers have trailed after only two full innings – the third and 11th of the April 14 loss to Miami (Ohio) – during the current homestand. They have not lost a nine-inning game since April 4 vs. Illinois. Purdue has not lost consecutive games during its 19-6 hot streak dating back to March 10. The Boilers have outscored the opposition 226-145 during that 25-game stretch. Six different Purdue batters had at least five hits last week as the lineup’s top-to-bottom production melded nicely with a pitching staff that registered 28 scoreless innings. The Boilermakers swept Ohio State over the weekend and have posted consecutive series sweeps in Big Ten play for the sixth time since the league moved to three-game weekends in 2009. The 2018 and 2024 teams both swept three consecutive Big Ten series and the 2012 Big Ten championship team also accounted for consecutive Big Ten sweeps in April. Prior to this homestand, Purdue had gone 12 consecutive (multi-game) series vs. Ohio State at home without a series win. It was easily the longest such home drought against any Big Ten rival. Next up, the Boilermakers have an opportunity to snap a nine-game home skid against Indiana State. Each of Purdue’s last four wins in the series have come in Terre Haute. The Sycamores have rallied for 10-inning wins at Alexander Field twice (2022, 2025) this decade. The Boilers will welcome UIC and IU Indy for a non-traditional doubleheader on Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00 P.M. To follow, in-conference opponent Northwestern will head to West Lafayette for a three-game series this weekend to close out the home season for Purdue. After being swept by Indiana in Bloomington, the Boilers have gone on a four-game win streak. Purdue picked up wins at Miami Ohio, and a series sweep at Rutgers last week. This was the second sweep of a conference opponent this season for Purdue, with the last coming in March against Ohio State. This is the first time Purdue has swept two conference opponents since 2017. Anna Moore has already had one of the most decorated seasons for a freshman in program history and looks to continue breaking records in a black and gold uniform. On top of her Purdue freshman record 11 home runs, Moore is batting .395 and has a team-high 51 RBIs this season. One more home run would tie her for third overall in program history for home runs in a single season. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS UIC comes into the matchup with a 19-25-1 overall record and 8-14 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Flames are coming off a loss to DePaul after winning two in a row. UIC’s offense is hitting .300 as a team with 338 hits, including 26 home runs. Sam Tourtillot highlights the Flames’ offense, hitting .380 with 49 hits, six home runs, and a team-high 37 runs. The IU Indy offense is hitting .279 as a team with 24 home runs this season. Paige McPhearson leads the way for the Jaguars, posting team highs of .366 batting average, 28 runs, and six home runs. Northwestern comes in the series with a 23-19 overall record and 11-7 record in Big Ten play. The Wildcats are coming off two conference sweeps of Penn State and Michigan State. They will travel to Northern Illinois for a midweek matchup before making the short drive to West Lafayette. Emma Raye leads the Wildcat offense with a .412 batting average and team-highs of 49 hits and 50 RBIs. Raye has also posted 12 home runs this season. The team is batting .302 and has 48 home runs this season. SERIES HISTORY Purdue and UIC already faced one another this season at the UNLV Leadoff Classic. The Boilers and Flames split the series in early February. The only other time the teams have played each other was in the 2024 season, where Purdue got the best of UIC in a 2-0 victory. IU Indy has been a common opponent for Purdue with the trip for both is an easy trip down I-65. Purdue has dominated the series with a 22-1 overall record and a perfect 12-0 record at home. The last victory game for Purdue last season at Bittinger Stadium, winning 3-0. Purdue and Northwestern are very familiar with one another in both program’s histories. The conference rivals have an overall record of 21-46, favoring the Wildcats. The Boilers hold a home record of 12-18 against Northwestern. The most recent win against the Wildcats came in the Big Ten Tournament last year at Bittinger Stadium in a 4-2 thriller. Cooper’s team received an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament this last season. “We are super excited to welcome Jackson Cooper to the Indiana State family!” said head coach Matthew Graves. “He is a great player that has had a ton of success at the NAIA level at Oregon Tech. He will create mismatches on the offensive end and has a tremendous feel for the game. What really separates Jackson is his ability to see the play before it happens, and that will allow him to be successful as a hub within our offense. Most importantly, he is a great person and will add leadership to our team.” The 6-7 rising senior forward is coming off an NAIA Second Team All-American campaign. He led Oregon Tech in scoring (17.7), rebounds per game (7.7), and assists per game (5.8) while finishing seventh in the NAIA with 174 total assists. Bauer Field (500) | Valparaiso, Ind. Tuesday, April 21, 3 p.m. CT – LHP Colton Rerick Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will look to halt a six-game skid in which three of the six defeats have come by one run on Tuesday against Western Michigan at Emory G. Bauer Field. The Beacons begin a four-game homestand after playing the previous four away from home. This will mark the team’s first home midweek game of the season. Last Time Out: The Beacons received commendable pitching performances on both Friday and Sunday at UIC, but the bullpen allowed the lead to slip away in both instances as UIC rallied to win 4-3 in the series opener and 5-4 in 12 innings in the finale. Adam Guazzo had his best start in a Valpo uniform with 6 1/3 shutout innings of five-hit ball while walking none and striking out six in Friday’s series opener. Likewise, Nick Baffa exited in position for the win on Sunday as he worked seven innings of one-run ball while striking out six and walking one. Dalton Swinehart took a tough-luck loss out of the bullpen after allowing no earned runs (one total run) on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 impressive innings of relief during the extra-inning affair. Following the Beacons: Tuesday’s game will air on ESPN+ with Leo Staudacher on the call. Links to live video and stats will be available on ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X. Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (221-397) is in his 13th season in charge of the program and his 20th overall at Valpo including seven seasons as an assistant coach. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19, 2024 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion. Series Notes: Valpo is 16-37 all-time against Western Michigan in a series that goes all the way back to 1947 including a 5-4 loss on April 7 of this season in Kalamazoo. The Broncos have won the last four head-to-head matchups after Valpo owned a five-game winning streak in the series prior to that recent reversal. #BeaconBits Eli Riley has reached base safely in 20 consecutive games. He owns Valpo’s longest on-base streak since Ryan Maka reached in 22 straight in 2024. Riley is hitting a team-best .306 over the squad’s last 10 games. His .419 OBP during that stretch also leads the Beacons. The Beacons experienced both ends of playing our great sport that does not use a clock (other than the pitch clock of course) in consecutive days. On April 18 at UIC, the game required only 1 hour, 55 minutes to complete, the team’s fastest game of the season, outdoing a game on Feb. 14 at Gardner-Webb that lasted just 1:58. It was Valpo’s fastest game since a 1-0 loss at Belmont on April 27, 2025. The very next day, the Beacons played a season-long 3:58 (12 innings) against the Flames. That was Valpo’s longest game since 4:12 on April 30, 2024 at Western Michigan (15 innings). It’s not a far leap to think that Valpo’s record could be quite a bit better with a bounce here and a bounce there. The team is 1-9 this season and 2-18 over the last two seasons in one-run games. Valpo has scored two runs or fewer in 12 games this season, going 0-12 in those contests. The pitching staff has allowed between three and five runs on eight occasions, and Valpo is just 1-7 in those contests. There have been four games this year where the opponent has scored exactly three runs, and Valpo has lost all four of those games. All nine Valpo wins this season have come in games where Valpo has scored first. The Beacons are 0-15 in games where the opponent strikes first. Starting Pitcher Profile LHP Colton Rerick, Fr.
