Chet Holmgren added 24 points and 12 rebounds and Ajay Mitchell had 22 points and six assists as the top-seeded Thunder swept their opening Western Conference series for the third straight season. Isaiah Hartenstein produced 18 points and 12 rebounds and Alex Caruso added 14 points off the bench for Oklahoma City. Mitchell and Caruso each made four 3-pointers for the Thunder, who will face either the Los Angeles Lakers or Houston Rockets in the second round. Devin Booker scored 24 points and Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green added 23 apiece for the Suns, who were swept in the first round for the second straight playoff appearance, the other occurring in 2024. Phoenix has lost 10 consecutive playoff games dating back to 2023. Nuggets 125, Timberwolves 113 Nikola Jokic recorded 27 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds as host Denver stayed alive with a win over Minnesota in Game 5 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series. Jamal Murray scored 24 points, Spencer Jones posted a playoff career-high 20 points and Cameron Johnson finished with 18 for third-seeded Denver, which had lost three straight following a Game 1 home victory. NBA Game Recaps Julius Randle led Minnesota with 27 points and nine rebounds. Bones Hyland and Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 15 apiece. Jaden McDaniels, loudly booed whenever he possessed the ball, added 13 points for the Timberwolves, who committed 25 turnovers. Magic 94, Pistons 88 Desmond Bane scored 22 points and made one of his five 3-pointers with 1:16 left as Orlando beat visiting Detroit to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Orlando forward Franz Wagner had 19 points before exiting late in the third period due to right calf soreness. Paolo Banchero scored 18 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The top-seeded Pistons were held without a field goal in the final five minutes before Isaiah Stewart scored at the buzzer. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists and eight turnovers. =================================== NHL KNIGHTS PULL LEVEL WITH MAMMOTH ON SHEA THEODORE’S OT GOAL Shea Theodore scored with 52 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Vegas Golden Knights a 5-4 win over the Utah Mammoth in Game 4 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series on Monday in Salt Lake City. The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, as the Knights rebounded after losing the previous two games and squandering a 3-0 lead on Monday to fall behind 4-3. Game 5 is set for Wednesday in Las Vegas. As double overtime approached, a broken play in front of the Utah net left goalie Karel Vejmelka without a stick. The puck was quickly moved in front to Theodore, and the defenseman buried the shot for the first playoff OT goal in his 11 NHL seasons. Brett Howden had two goals and an assist for Vegas, and Jack Eichel had three assists. Noah Hanifin had two assists, and Cole Smith and Pavel Dorofeyev scored the other Vegas goals. Carter Hart stopped 27 of 31 shots to earn his second win of the playoffs. Mikhail Sergachev had three assists for the Mammoth, and Nick Schmaltz had a goal and an assist. Clayton Keller, Ian Cole and Michael Carcone contributed Utah’s other goals. Vejmelka stopped 31 of 36 shots. Dorfeyev and Howden bookended the first period with their first goals of the playoffs, beginning with Dorfeyev’s tally just 1:12 into the game. During a Mammoth power play at the 18:38 mark, a Mitch Marner takeaway set up Howden for the short-handed goal. At 3:26 of the second period, Smith slickly redirected Hanifin’s point shot to give Vegas a 3-0 lead. Just when the Golden Knights seemed to be in full command, the Mammoth responded with two goals in 29 seconds. Schmaltz started the comeback at the 8:04 mark of the middle frame by converting his own rebound. Cole then added the quick follow-up with a long-range shot that deflected off the post and into the Knights’ net. Carcone scored the equalizer on a one-timer from the right circle 1:45 into the third period, and Keller gave Utah its first lead on a deflected goal 5:10 into the third frame. It was then the Knights’ turn to equalize on a Howden tip-in at the 10:25 mark. ===== PENGUINS EXTEND SERIES AGAIN WITH 3-2 WIN OVER FLYERS IN GAME 5 Kris Letang’s fluky go-ahead goal late in the second period proved to be the difference as the Pittsburgh Penguins posted a 3-2 home victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. Sidney Crosby had two assists for Pittsburgh despite missing some action after taking a shot off his leg in the second period. Arturs Silovs turned aside 18 shots for the Penguins, including a quality pad save on Porter Martone in the final minute, to help the hosts stay alive in the best-of-seven series. Dan Vladar made 18 saves for the Flyers, who will get a third chance to win the series Wednesday when the teams reconvene in Philadelphia for Game 6. Alex Bump scored for the visitors in his first career playoff game, while Travis Sanheim also tallied for the Flyers. Elmer Soderblom’s goal was the only tally of the first period. Just under three minutes into the contest, Anthony Mantha won a battle behind the net and sent the puck into the slot for Soderblom, who launched a one-timer past Vladar. Early in the second, Connor Dewar beat Vladar with a wrister to make it 2-0 Pittsburgh, although Bump scored 12 seconds later to bring Philadelphia back within a goal. The score remained 2-1 until the Flyers tied it with 4:54 left in the second period. Sanheim took a seemingly innocent shot from near the boards that skimmed off the stick of Pittsburgh defenseman Erik Karlsson and past a helpless Silovs. Letang gave Pittsburgh the lead just over two minutes later, following another apparently harmless shot that found its way into the net. The veteran defenseman lofted the puck from the right point, and the floater went past Vladar’s glove. The puck then bounced off the end boards, caromed back in front, got lost in Vladar’s skates and slid into the goal. Vladar kept the game close with a sprawling pad save on Rust in the opening minute of the third period. Philadelphia pressured throughout the final session and had a couple of chances down the stretch with Vladar pulled for an extra skater, but Silovs and the Penguins held firm. ================================= MLB MLB ROUNDUP: CARDS SCORE 4 RUNS IN NINTH TO STUN PIRATES Jose Fermin’s two-run double with one out in the ninth inning capped a four-run rally as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame a near-shutout and beat the host Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Monday. St. Louis, which had lost four straight and five of six, was hitless through 6 2/3 innings and scoreless through 8 1/3 before breaking through against Dennis Santana, who came into the contest with two saves and a 0.69 ERA with only one earned run allowed in 13 appearances. Those numbers took a hit right away as Pedro Pages, St. Louis’ backup catcher, and rookie JJ Wetherholt hit back-to-back home runs off Santana (2-2) to even the game. It was Pages’ third home run of the season, and second in his last two games, while Wetherholt went deep for the third straight game and sixth time this season. Ryan O’Hearn and Jake Mangum drove in runs for Pittsburgh, which dropped its second straight game. Yankees 4, Rangers 2 Max Fried pitched six scoreless innings and was backed by three homers as New York prevailed in Arlington, Texas. Ben Rice, Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered as the Yankees won for the ninth time in 10 games. Fried (4-1) allowed four hits and produced his fourth scoreless start this season. David Bednar gave up a run in the ninth but got his eighth save. Rangers starter Jack Leiter (1-2) yielded four runs on eight hits in six innings. Joc Pederson delivered a solo homer. Rays 3, Guardians 2 Ryan Vilade singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Steven Matz worked a season-high seven innings to lead visiting Tampa Bay over Cleveland. Vilade had two RBI singles in a three-inning span as the Rays scored three unanswered runs to erase a 2-0 deficit. Vilade went 3-for-4 and Jonathan Aranda added a home run for the Rays. Matz (4-1) gave up two runs on four hits. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the fifth on Daniel Schneemann’s two-run homer to left off Matz. Chase DeLauter went 2-for-4 with a double. Parker Messick tied his career high with nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits. Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 0 Ranger Suarez pitched eight innings of one-hit ball as visiting Boston blanked Toronto. Suarez (2-2) struck out 10 one in the opener of a three-game series. Carlos Narvaez hit a solo homer for the Red Sox and Marcelo Mayer and Wilyer Abreu each had two hits, a walk and an RBI. Dylan Cease (1-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Toronto had only a walk before Jesus Sanchez led off the home sixth with a double past third base, breaking up a no-hit bid. Dalton Varsho had the Jays’ other hit, a double in the ninth inning. Twins 11, Mariners 4 Kody Clemens went 2-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs, and Minnesota cruised to a win over Seattle in Minneapolis. Byron Buxton hit a two-run homer and Trevor Larnach went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Minnesota, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Ryan Jeffers went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer for Seattle, whose four-game winning streak ended. ================================== NFL EAGLES EXERCISE FIFTH-YEAR OPTIONS ON JALEN CARTER, NOLAN SMITH The Philadelphia Eagles locked up a pair of defensive starters through the 2027 season, picking up the fifth-year options of defensive tackle Jalen Carter and outside linebacker Nolan Smith on Monday. The team faced a Friday deadline on the options for the two Georgia products. Carter, 25, was the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft. A Pro Bowl honoree each of the past two years, Carter is in line to make $27 million in 2027. Smith, 25, was also selected in the first round two years ago, No. 30 overall. He is in line to receive around $13.7 million in 2027. Both players were key performers in the Eagles’ run to the 2024-25 Super Bowl championship, as Smith had four sacks in the playoff run and Carter recorded two. Carter has 108 tackles, 13.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 13 passes defensed in 43 NFL games (27 starts). Last season, he logged 33 tackles, three sacks and a career-best seven passes defensed in 11 games, all starts, despite being slowed by shoulder injuries. A triceps ailment limited Smith to 12 games, all starts, last year, and he had 31 tackles, three sacks and one fumble recovery. In 45 NFL games (22 starts), he has 91 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two passes defensed. ===== ARCH MANNING FAVORITE TO BE TOP PICK IN ’27 NFL DRAFT Arch Manning has opened as the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the next NFL draft for the second consecutive year. The Texas quarterback was installed as the +250 favorite by DraftKings. That’s ahead of fellow quarterbacks Dante Moore (+380) of Oregon, Notre Dame’s CJ Carr (+650) and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellars (+1200). After only two quarterbacks were selected in the first round on Friday — including the Rams surprising many by taking Ty Simpson at No. 13 — the 2027 quarterback class is projected to be much deeper. It’s led by Manning, who was installed as the +200 favorite by DraftKings following the conclusion of the 2025 class to be the No. 1 pick this year. Manning endured some struggles the first half of last season before finishing strong, and opted to return for another year with the Longhorns. Moore also decided to return to school despite being projected as a potential top-5 selection, boosting a ’27 quarterback class that already boasted intriguing talent. Carr is coming off a strong first season as Notre Dame’s starter, while Sellars is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2025 for the Gamecocks. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has the shortest odds among non-quarterback. He is being offered at +1400 along with new Miami Hurricanes signal-caller Darian Mensah. 2027 NFL DRAFT NO. 1 PICK ODDS*Arch Manning, QB, Texas (+250)Dante Moore, QB, Oregon (+380)CJ Carr, QB, Notre Dame (+650)LaNorris Sellers, QB, South Carolina (+1200)Jeremiah Smith, WR, Ohio State (+1400)Darian Mensah, QB, Miami, Fla. The Yellow Jackets beat SEC-leading Georgia 14-4 at the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park on Tuesday and then took three from Wake Forest for a third straight ACC home series sweep, a first for the program since 1997. Their 36-7 record is the best in program history after 43 games, and their 19-5 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference games is their best after 24 games. They lead North Carolina by two games. “This team continues to pave their path here and do some things that haven’t been done in awhile,” coach James Ramsey said, adding that he admires how his players power through fatigue and other adversity to put their best effort on the field every game. That was quite apparent Saturday when the Yellow Jackets won 14-11 after erasing a 10-0, second-inning deficit. They were trailing 11-3 in the fifth when freshman Cooper Underwood came on in relief. Underwood, drafted in the 12th round by Milwaukee last year, allowed no hits over five shutout innings as the Tech rallied. “The look in his eye was a little different,” Ramsey said. “He was a guy who said, ‘I’m going to make sure I’m applying pressure instead of having pressure applied to me.’” Tech had to come from behind in its other two wins over the Demon Deacons, 6-5 on both Friday and Sunday. The Yellow Jackets have posted seven sweeps, their most since 2010, largely because of a prolific offense that is on track to set school records with its scoring average of 10.6 runs per game, .354 batting average, .468 on-base percentage and .618 slugging percentage. Jarren Advincula, sixth in the country with a .428 batting average, leads a group of seven players hitting over .350. In the polls UCLA (39-4) remains the consensus No. 1 team after taking two of three against Sacramento State. The Bruins on Tuesday visit UC Santa Barbara, which beat the Bruins 4-0 in Los Angeles on April 14, and travel to Michigan State this weekend. North Carolina (36-8), which won two of three at Duke, is No. 2 by D1Baseball.com and Baseball America. Georgia Tech is third by D1Baseball while Texas (32-9) remained No. 3 by Baseball America after winning two of three at Vanderbilt. The Longhorns host No. 10 Mississippi State this weekend. First woman to pitch in D1 Brown’s Olivia Pichardo, who in 2023 became the first woman to play in a Division I baseball game, achieved another milestone when she became the first to pitch in a D1 game. It happened Saturday when she came on with two outs in the ninth inning. She threw two pitches, with the 16-4 victory over Cornell ending when Tyler Beaulieu grounded out to shortstop. Pichardo, listed as an outfielder and pitcher, made the team as a walk-on in the fall of 2022. She appeared in one game each of her first two seasons. She grounded out as a pinch-hitter in 2023 and was hit by a pitch and scored in her only plate appearance in 2024. She had three at-bats over three games in 2025, striking out twice and flying out. During the Jeff Mercer era in Bloomington, ten Oever is the 15th different player to earn the honor. It’s the fifth-straight season that at least two IU players have been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in the same year. During last week’s action, ten Oever was the most productive player in the IU lineup. He hit .533 in four games with eight hits, two home runs and six RBIs. He hit a grand slam in the first inning of a win over Ball State and provided his first career three-hit day in Sunday’s contest with Iowa. Of IU’s nine starting position players over the weekend, six of them have now earned a Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor in the last two seasons. The young designated hitter joins redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts among the conference’s best young players this year. Sophomores Hogan Denny, Jake Hanley, Will Moore and Cooper Malamazian all won the award a season ago. ===== BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Midweek action comes to a conclusion on Tuesday (April 28) evening in Louisville. The Indiana Baseball team (19-25, 6-15 B1G) will take on Louisville to wrap up the month of April at Jim Patterson Stadium. IU heads into the week with an 8-2 record in midweek contests and will look to put the punctuation on a fantastic slate of Tuesday games this season. Freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, burst onto the scene as a starter this past weekend. He hit .533 in four contests with a pair of home runs and six RBIs. He’s the 15th different IU player to earn a Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor under head coach Jeff Mercer. It’s the fifth-straight year that multiple players have won the award in the same season. Graduate student left-handed pitcher Conner Linn will get the starting nod in the Tuesday tilt against Louisville. His last midweek start was a spectacular five-inning, scoreless performance against Evansville. IU will have a handful of arms lined up behind him including senior southpaw Anthony Gubitosi. First pitch in Louisville is set for 6 p.m. on ACCNX. IU’s final nine regular season games are all weekend contests in conference play. A trip to Northwestern will kick start the month of May this weekend (May 1-3) in both Chicago and Evanston. RED HOT TO: Freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever went on a tear last week, batting .533 over four games for the Hoosiers. He smashed a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning at Ball State. On the season, he’s batting .333 with 15 hits. STRAIGHT TO CAMPUS: Over 94 percent of IU’s hits this season have been provided by homegrown players. Head coach Jeff Mercer is big on recruiting talented prep athletes to campus. Most of IU’s starting lineups this season have been full of players that came to IU directly out of high school. ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE: IU will look to wrap up the month of April with its 10th win in that timeframe. Only Dustin DeMuth (102 – 2011-12) has begun their career with more consecutive starts since the 2010 season. Hanley has collected 130 hits in that stretch of play as well. LOUIS, Mo. – Indiana State pitcher Spencer Johsen was named this week’s Missouri Valley Pitcher of the Week following his performance on Sunday afternoon against Evansville. The Sycamores continue trending upward in the circle, on defense, and in late-game execution as they prepare to host one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s top teams, the Belmont Bruins. The Sycamores’ weekend showcased their toughness in tight games. On Saturday, Indiana State walked off Drake behind a seventh-inning RBI from Morgan Goodrich. Less than 24 hours later, ISU delivered its most dramatic finish of the season, an 11-inning, 1–0 victory sealed by Madison Poulson’s walk-off single. Senior Megan Asher was exceptional, throwing all 11 shutout innings while allowing just four hits. Indiana State’s offense continued to create pressure with key swings from Poulson, Goodrich, Bella Pusateri, and Peyton Simmons, and the defense played clean, composed softball throughout the series. Belmont enters Tuesday’s matchup with one of the strongest resumes in the MVC. The Bruins are 34–11 overall and 20–5 in conference play, backed by a schedule that includes wins over Missouri State, Central Michigan, Southern Indiana, UIC, Evansville, Bradley, Southern Illinois, and Drake. Belmont has also earned notable victories over Georgia and Mississippi State, demonstrating the ability to compete at a high level. The Bruins have been consistent across all environments, posting a 16–3 home record, 13–5 road record, and 5–3 neutral-site mark, while maintaining a .756 winning percentage. Their lineup and pitching staff have helped them climb into the national mid-major rankings, and they enter the week having won multiple MVC series, including sweeps of Valparaiso and Drake. For Indiana State, Tuesday presents an opportunity to build on its recent surge. The Sycamores have allowed two runs or fewer in four of their last five games, continue to produce timelyextra-base hits, and have shown steady defensive improvement. With confidence high and momentum building, ISU looks to carry its strong weekend performance into another key Valley matchup. First pitch for Tuesday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Price Field. ================================ PURDUE FT.
