NBA ROUNDUP: SPURS STORM PAST BLAZERS IN VICTOR WEMBANYAMA’S RETURN

De’Aaron Fox scored 28 points and Victor Wembanyama had 27 in his return from concussion protocol, helping the visiting San Antonio Spurs to a 114-93 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round series on Sunday.

Fox sank 11 of 17 shots from the floor and drained four 3-pointers to aid the Spurs in overcoming a 19-point deficit to seize a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 is Tuesday in San Antonio. After sitting out Game 3, Wembanyama showed why he was the NBA’s first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year by recording 11 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals.

Stephon Castle collected 16 points and eight assists while dealing with both an injured left hand and foul trouble. Devin Vassell added 11 points for the Spurs, who outscored the Trail Blazers by a 73-35 margin in the second half. Deni Avdija scored 26 points, Jrue Holiday had 20 and Jerami Grant added 17 off the bench for the Trail Blazers.

Tied at 74 entering the fourth quarter, the Spurs opened the period on a 27-7 run. Castle set up Wembanyama for a trio of alley-oop dunks before Fox sank a pair of jumpers and a 3-pointer to give San Antonio an 87-77 lead with 7:47 left. Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson converted from beyond the arc and added a pair of driving buckets to extend San Antonio’s lead to 101-81 with 4:31 remaining.

Rockets 115, Lakers 96

Amen Thompson scored a game-high 23 points, Tari Eason added 20 and Houston averted elimination with a victory over visiting Los Angeles in Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Rockets, who played without Kevin Durant (ankle) for the third time in the series. Reed Sheppard chipped in 17 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting while Alperen Sengun (19 points) and Jabari Smith Jr. (16 points) rounded out the balanced offensive attack.

After dominating Game 3 and co-authoring the Lakers’ overtime victory, LeBron James (10 points, nine assists) and Marcus Smart (nine, five) shot a combined 5 of 17 from the floor. Deandre Ayton finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds but was ejected in the third quarter.

Raptors 93, Cavaliers 89

Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes each scored 23 points and Toronto held off visiting Cleveland to even the best-of-seven first-round playoff series at 2-2.

Barnes added nine rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots to his stat line and scored 10 fourth-quarter points, knocking down all six free throw attempts in the final 34.6 seconds. RJ Barrett added 18 points for the Raptors, and Collin Murray-Boyles scored 15 with 10 rebounds.

Donovan Mitchell scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for Cleveland. James Harden added 19 points but had seven turnovers. Jarrett Allen had three points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Sam Merrill contributed 14 points.

Celtics 128, 76ers 96

Payton Pritchard scored a career-playoff-high 32 points off the bench and Boston took a 3-1 series lead with a convincing road victory over Philadelphia.

Jayson Tatum made five treys and recorded 30 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds and Jaylen Brown added 20 points and seven rebounds as the second-seeded Celtics moved one victory away from winning the Eastern Conference first-round series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Boston.

Joel Embiid played for the first time in the series for the seventh-seeded 76ers after undergoing an appendectomy two-plus weeks ago. He scored 26 points on 9-of-21 shooting and collected 10 rebounds and six assists while playing 34 minutes. Tyrese Maxey scored 22 points and Paul George added 16 for the 76ers.

WOLVES’ ANTHONY EDWARDS HAS BONE BRUISE IN LEFT KNEE AND IS LIKELY TO MISS WEEKS, AP SOURCE SAYS

The left knee of Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards remained structurally intact when he was injured during Game 4 of his team’s Western Conference first-round playoff series, but he is likely to miss multiple weeks, a person with knowledge of the situation said Sunday.

Edwards has a bone bruise and also hyperextended the knee, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced details or a return-to-play timeline.

ESPN and The Athletic first reported the diagnosis on Edwards.

Edwards was hurt in the first half of Minnesota’s 112-96 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night, a victory that gave the Timberwolves a 3-1 lead in that series. But the Wolves also lost fellow starting guard Donte DiVincenzo in that game with a torn Achilles tendon, meaning his season is over and his 2026-27 season is likely in great jeopardy as well.

Game 5 of the series is Monday night in Denver.

DiVincenzo was having surgery to repair the Achilles on Sunday in New York, the Timberwolves announced. That timeframe — surgery one day after the injury — follows what Boston’s Jayson Tatum did after he suffered the same injury in last season’s playoffs. Tatum started rehab quickly and missed about 10 months, returning for the final stretch of this season. If DiVincenzo follows the same timeline, he could be back before the end of next season.

Edwards is one of the NBA’s most dynamic players, someone who — if he had met the league’s eligibility criteria by playing in a few more games — would have been a lock to make the All-NBA team for a third consecutive season.

He averaged 28.8 points in the regular season, third best in the NBA behind Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers and reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Edwards also averaged five rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

Edwards was fourth in scoring for the U.S. Olympic team that won a gold medal at the Paris Games in 2024. He missed 21 games this season, by far the most of his career.

This injury happened with him on the defensive end, while he was contesting a layup attempt by Denver’s Cam Johnson. Edwards leaped in an effort to block the shot, and when he landed his left leg appeared to be at an unusual angle. His knee buckled, and when he hobbled off the floor he seemed unable to put much if any weight on that leg.

Timberwolves forward Julius Randle said he didn’t see DiVincenzo before leaving the arena, and he had a quiet exchange with Edwards when he saw him in the locker room.

“I just dapped him up,” Randle said. “There’s not much to say in those moments. … Somebody who’s going through those situations is processing a lot.”

NHL

NHL ROUNDUP: TOP-SEEDED AVS SWEEP KINGS IN ANZE KOPITAR’S FAREWELL

Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and added an assist for the Colorado Avalanche, who finished off the host Los Angeles Kings with a 5-1 victory Sunday to sweep the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series.

MacKinnon, who led the NHL with 53 goals in the regular season, got his first goals of the postseason. Cale Makar, Nicolas Roy and Devon Toews also scored for the Avalanche, while Gabriel Landeskog added two assists. Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves for the Avalanche, who will advance to play the winner of the Dallas Stars-Minnesota Wild series that’s tied 2-2.

Joel Edmundson registered his first goal of the series for the Kings, with assists coming from Adrian Kempe and Alex Laferriere. Anton Forsberg stopped 27 of 31 shots. With their season on the brink, the Kings pulled Forsberg with 5:48 remaining. MacKinnon finished the scoring 20 seconds later.

The loss was the final game for Kings captain Anze Kopitar, who previously announced his plans to retire after this season. As the game neared its end, Kings fans chanted their thanks to Kopitar, who played 20 seasons for Los Angeles and led the franchise to two Stanley Cups.

Ducks 4, Oilers 3 (OT)

Ryan Poehling scored the winning goal to give the host Anaheim an overtime victory over Edmonton and put the Ducks one win away from advancing in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Cutter Gauthier, Mikael Granlund and Jeffery Viel also scored for Anaheim in the comeback victory that has it up 3-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series. Defensemen John Carlson and Jackson Lacombe each had two assists and Lukas Dostal made 24 saves.

The Oilers’ Evan Bouchard notched a goal and an assist, Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each scored a goal, while Connor McDavid collected two assists, his 50th multi-point performance in 100 career playoff games. Tristan Jarry stopped 34 shots in his first start of this year’s playoffs.

Lightning 3, Canadiens 2

Brandon Hagel scored his second goal of the game with 4:53 remaining in the third period to lift Tampa Bay to a win over the Canadiens in Montreal.

The Lightning rallied from a 2-0 second-period deficit to even their Eastern Conference first-round series at two games apiece. Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist, Kucherov and J.J. Moser each had two assists and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 16 saves for the Lightning.

Zachary Bolduc and Cole Caufield scored for the Canadiens and Jakob Dobes made 17 saves.

Sabres 6, Bruins 1

Visiting Buffalo ripped off a four-goal first period and never looked back en route to a Game 4 win over Boston and a 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Peyton Krebs, Josh Doan, Bowen Byram and Alex Tuch all notched a goal and an assist, while Zach Benson and Beck Malenstyn also scored for the Sabres, who rang up a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Alex Lyon made 23 saves and held a shutout until Boston’s lone goal by Sean Kuraly with 40 seconds left in the third.

The Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman allowed six goals on 29 shots before Joonas Korpisalo entered in relief for the final 13:19.

MLB

MLB ROUNDUP: CHAD TRACY WINS MANAGERIAL DEBUT AS RED SOX TOP O’S

Willson Contreras hit a two-run home run and Connelly Early pitched into the seventh inning as the Boston Red Sox won in their first game after a surprising weekend managerial change, beating the host Baltimore Orioles 5-3.

With Chad Tracy serving as interim manager after Alex Cora’s Saturday firing, Ceddanne Rafaela recorded an RBI triple and a double as the Red Sox won consecutive games for the first time since April 15 and 17.

Early (2-1) worked 6 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with a season-low one walk. He struck out four.

Gunnar Henderson and Samuel Basallo, who each had two hits, smacked solo home runs for the Orioles. Henderson added a second RBI on a single. Baltimore starter Kyle Bradish (1-3) gave up three runs on four hits in five innings.

Braves 6, Phillies 2

Chris Sale pitched six scoreless innings to earn the 150th victory of his career as Atlanta beat visiting Philadelphia in the rubber game of their three-game series.

Sale (5-1) retired the first eight batters he faced and allowed only one hit, a single to Trea Turner, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. He struck out a season-high nine batters and moved past Chuck Finley into 28th place on the career strikeouts list with 2,617. Sale also became the fourth active pitcher with 150 wins, joining Justin Verlander (266), Max Scherzer (222) and Gerrit Cole (153).

Atlanta became the first team to win 20 games, a milestone they didn’t reach until May 12 in their 41st game in 2025. The Phillies, who ended their 10-game losing streak on Saturday, have lost 15 of their last 18. Philadelphia right-hander Aaron Nola (1-3) allowed a season-high six runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out six.

Rockies 3, Mets 1 (Game 1)

Troy Johnston had an RBI single in the fourth inning and hit into the tie-breaking, run-scoring double play in the sixth for visiting Colorado, which beat skidding New York in the opener of a doubleheader.

Jose Quintana (1-2) tossed 5 1/3 solid innings for the Rockies, who have won the first two games of the three-game set to lock up their third series win of the season. Colorado finished 43-119 last season and didn’t win its third series until July 18-20, when it took two of three from the Minnesota Twins.

Jake McCarthy added an insurance RBI single in the seventh for Colorado. Tyrone Taylor homered in the fifth for the Mets.

Rockies 3, Mets 0 (Game 2)

Chase Dollander threw seven scoreless innings in the longest outing of his career as visiting Colorado completed a doubleheader sweep of sinking New York. Four Rockies pitchers combined on a four-hitter in a 3-1 win in the opener.

Troy Johnston had an RBI single in the second inning of the nightcap and Hunter Goodman hit a two-run homer one inning later for Colorado, which swept a series from the Mets in New York for the first time since 2018 to improve to 13-16.

New York has lost 15 of 17 — its worst 17-game stretch since a 2-15 skid from Aug. 28 through Sept, 13, 2004. Dollander (3-2), who made his first start of the season after six long relief outings, allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven over a career-high 105 pitches.

Blue Jays 4, Guardians 2

Jesus Sanchez homered and drove in three runs to help Toronto earn a victory over visiting Cleveland.

Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who took two of three from Cleveland. Toronto starter Patrick Corbin went 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking two.

Slade Cecconi (0-4) saw his winless start to the season prolonged, yielding four runs on six hits across 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one for Cleveland, which has dropped three of its last four games. Angel Martinez tallied two hits and an RBI in the loss.

Rays 4, Twins 2

Yandy Diaz belted a two-run homer to highlight a four-run third inning, helping Tampa Bay complete a three-game series sweep of Minnesota in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Chandler Simpson went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run, and Jonathan Aranda joined Diaz with two RBIs to pace the Rays to their fourth straight victory. Jesse Scholtens (2-1), who relieved opener Griffin Jax with one out in the third, allowed two runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Brooks Lee hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who lost their fifth straight game and fell to 1-9 over the last 10. Simeon Woods Richardson (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Tigers 8, Reds 3

Hao-Yu Lee belted a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run homer and Spencer Torkelson had three hits and homered in his franchise-tying fifth straight game as visiting Detroit rallied for a win over Cincinnati.

Kerry Carpenter doubled and tripled, while Gleyber Torres added three hits, including a two-run homer for the Tigers. Detroit pitcher Keider Montero was charged with three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking two over five innings, while lefty reliever Brant Hurter (3-0) pitched a perfect sixth to earn the win.

Nathaniel Lowe and JJ Bleday belted solo homers for Cincinnati, which fell for just the second time in nine games. Starter Rhett Lowder settled down after a two-run first inning, and allowed just the two runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Nationals 2, White Sox 1 (10 innings)

Jose Tena hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the 10th inning after CJ Abrams provided a go-ahead sacrifice fly as Washington edged host Chicago.

Both pitching staffs allowed just four hits. Paxton Schultz worked around Tristan Peters’ RBI single in the bottom of the 10th for his first save. Nationals left-hander Foster Griffin delivered his second consecutive quality start, scattering two hits in seven shutout innings. Griffin walked two and struck out a career-high eight. Richard Lovelady (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory.

Chicago righty Sean Burke shined, as well, limiting Washington to three hits in 7 1/3 innings with zero walks and four strikeouts. Seranthony Dominguez (1-3) took the loss.

Astros 7, Yankees 4

Spencer Arrighetti worked seven strong innings, Christian Walker produced a three-hit game with a home run and Houston salvaged the finale of a three-game series against visiting New York.

Arrighetti (3-0), who opened the season with Triple-A Sugar Land, allowed three hits, walked one and posted eight strikeouts on 96 pitches, 64 for strikes. Walker finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Isaac Paredes went 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs and three RBIs.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled twice and scored for the Yankees, who rallied for three runs with two outs in the ninth but had their eight-game winning streak snapped. Luis Gil (1-2) dished five hits through four innings, and allowed six runs.

Mariners 3, Cardinals 2

Pinch hitter Rob Refsnyder homered with one out in the ninth inning to break a tie as Seattle defeated host St. Louis.

Cal Raleigh also homered for the Mariners, who swept the three-game interleague set. Refsnyder deposited a 3-2 sweeper from reliever JoJo Romero (0-1) into the Mariners’ bullpen in left field. Eduard Bazardo (1-1) earned the victory and Jose A. Ferrer worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season.

JJ Wetherholt and Nathan Church went deep for the Cardinals, who have lost four in a row. St. Louis starter Michael McGreevy went six innings, and gave up one run on five hits, with no walks and a season-high six strikeouts.

Brewers 5, Pirates 0

Kyle Harrison tossed six innings of one-hit ball with a career-high 12 strikeouts and Milwaukee snapped a four-game skid with a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.

The Brewers backed Harrison with a five-run fourth inning to avoid their first sweep against Pittsburgh since 2022 and first at home to the Pirates since a four-game series in August 2016.

The only hit off Harrison (2-1) in his 101-pitch outing was a leadoff single in the second by Marcell Ozuna, who was erased on a double play. The only other runner off Harrison came on a two-out walk in the fourth.

Athletics 2, Rangers 1

Carlos Cortes delivered a two-run triple in the first inning and the Athletics held on to beat Texas in the rubber match of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Cortes also had a pair of singles for the Athletics, while starting pitcher J.T. Ginn allowed three hits over 3 1/3 scoreless innings before exiting with right arm soreness. Joel Kuhnel, Jacob Lopez, Justin Sterner (1-2) and Hogan Harris followed Ginn before right-hander Jack Perkins pitched two scoreless innings for his second save.

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz set a franchise record by drawing a walk in his 16th consecutive game. He has also reached base safely in each of his last 22 games. Josh Jung doubled twice for the Rangers, who were out-hit 10-6 and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Diamondbacks 12, Padres 7

Ildemaro Vargas had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs as Arizona overcame a six-run deficit to beat San Diego for a split of the short two-game Mexico City Series at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu.

Tim Tawa triggered a six-run seventh inning with his first career grand slam, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. capped it with a two-run single to give the D-Backs their first lead after having trailed 7-1. Ryne Nelson allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. He has given up 14 runs in his last two starts over 5 1/3 innings.

Manny Machado had two home runs, Luis Campusano doubled and homered and Jackson Merrill had two hits for the Padres, who had won 13 of 15. Padres starter Michael King gave up three hits and two runs in six innings, with eight strikeouts and one walk. He fanned seven of the first nine batters he faced.

Dodgers 6, Cubs 0

Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run in 13 games and Justin Wrobleski continued his strong start to the season with six scoreless innings as Los Angeles finished off a series victory over visiting Chicago.

Miguel Rojas hit a two-run double in the first inning and Dalton Rushing had an RBI single in the sixth. Wrobleski (4-0) gave up four hits with six strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 1.50 in 30 innings over five appearances and four consecutive starts.

Shota Imanaga (2-2) gave up a season-high five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Imanaga allowed more runs than his last four starts combined (three).

Royals 11, Angels 9 (10 innings)

Lane Thomas hit a three-run, walk-off homer in the 10th inning, after Jac Caglianone clubbed a tying two-run shot in the ninth, and host Kansas City rallied past Los Angeles to complete a three-game series sweep.

In a contest whose start was moved up roughly three hours due to predicted severe weather, Kansas City trailed 6-0 after two innings and 8-5 entering the bottom of the ninth. Bobby Witt Jr. and Isaac Collins also homered for the Royals, who are 4-1 since an eight-game skid.

Losers in seven of eight, the Angels wasted no time getting to Royals starter Seth Lugo. Zach Neto opened the game with the first of his three hits, then Mike Trout sent a drive off and over the top of the left-field wall for a 2-0 lead. It was the first homer allowed this season by Lugo, who yielded seven runs and a career-high 14 hits over 6 1/3 innings on Sunday.

Giants 6, Marlins 3

Casey Schmitt hit a go-ahead home run for the second consecutive day, Landen Roupp ran his personal winning streak to four games and San Francisco closed out a winning homestand with a victory over Miami.

Jung Hoo Lee had four hits, including a triple, and scored twice for the Giants. Roupp (5-1) served up a three-run homer to Graham Pauley, his first of the season, in the second inning.

The Marlins managed just two hits, both coming in the three-run second. Liam Hicks followed Xavier Edwards’ walk with a single, after which both jogged home on Pauley’s home run. Max Meyer was pulled after five innings, having limited the Giants to just one run, which was unearned.

RETIEF GOOSEN SURGES TO 5TH CAREER CHAMPIONS TOUR WIN AT MITSUBISHI

Retief Goosen recorded a bogey-free back nine and birdied the 18th hole in Sunday’s final round to win the Mitsubishi Electric Classic by two points at +39 in Sugarloaf, Ga.

The tournament used the Modified Stableford scoring system to encourage aggressive play. Rather than scoring relative to par, points are awarded per hole — minus-1 for a bogey, zero for par and two for birdie. Eagles are worth five points while double bogeys are minus-3.

Goosen entered the third round three points back of Zach Johnson at +25 after scoring +12 on Friday and +13 on Saturday. The South African made five birdies in a six-hole span between Nos. 2-7 to surge ahead.

“I got into a great rhythm all week. I drove it really well in the first round, yesterday pretty poor and today was a little better,” Goosen said. “The putter this week got me going and that’s how you win tournaments.”

After a bogey on the par-4 ninth, he posted six pars along with birdies on the 10th, 13th and 18th holes. The last birdie broke a deadlock with Canada’s Stephen Ames (+37), preventing a playoff and handing the two-time major champion his fifth Champions Tour title.

A special moment was made that much more memorable by the fact that Goosen’s son was there in person to watch him finish atop the leaderboard.

“I think the biggest emotion is that I’ve won in front of my son, him actually seeing me win, not seeing me on TV win,” Goosen said. “Was nice to pull it off in front of him. Last time I won in front of him he was one year old in 2004’s U.S. Open, so really proud moment to have him here and see me lifting a trophy.”

Ames (+19 Sunday) was tied with two others for the best score of the tournament in Sunday’s round, nearly rallying all the way back from a +2 opening round that had him well down the leaderboard. He carded one eagle, seven birdies and no bogeys.

Johnson (+8) had two birdies and two bogeys in the first six holes before rattling off nine straight pars to halt what had been a consistent week of putting up positive numbers. He birdied the final three holes, finishing a stroke back of Ames in third place at +36.

Stewart Cink (+19) and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (+15) rounded out the top five at +35 and +33. Cink, who scored a combined +30 in the first and third rounds, was derailed by a +5 on Saturday.

“(Sunday) was a little bit more, I don’t know, a little bit more purposeful mindset,” Cink said. “And I don’t know why I felt more freed up, but I felt more freed up to just go out there and just throw it all against the wall and see what happens. Got off to a great start, made eagle on 6. It’s amazing how quickly you can get back into this thing in this format. It’s really interesting and fun.”

BROTHERLY LOVE: MATT, ALEX FITZPATRICK CAPTURE MEANINGFUL ZURICH WIN

Brothers Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick of England had the perfect ending to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

They birdied the final hole after their three-stroke lead vanished on the back nine Sunday, leading them to win the PGA Tour’s only team event at Avondale, La.

The birdie on the par-5 18th hole gave them a 1-under-par 71, pushing their tournament total to 31-under 257 at TPC Louisiana.

“It means the world, absolutely speechless,” Matt said. “It was a grind today, and (Alex) was unbelievable. I couldn’t be more proud. That was just truly unbelievable.”

Matt is a PGA Tour winner on back-to-back Sundays after winning the RBC Heritage a week earlier. As for Alex, a DP World Tour player, he’ll receive a PGA Tour card through 2028 and a number of exemptions, including into the PGA Championship, after winning for the first time on the PGA Tour.

“It’s amazing to be with him, my mom and dad,” Alex said. “Just a lot of hard work. I can’t believe we’ve done it.”

Moments later, Alex was still trying to let it sink in.

“I’m still shaking, and yeah, it was crazy,” he said.

Sitting in a three-way tie going to the last hole, Alex’s approach went into a bunker in front of the 18th green for the team’s second shot, but on the next swing Matt blasted out and put the ball within 2 feet of the cup and they avoided a playoff.

“To finish that, I said just give us a chance on the last,” Matt said. “And obviously to hit a shot like that, it’s nice to give him the easy tap-in there.”

Alex Smalley/Hayden Springer (68) and the Norwegian pair of Kristoffer Reitan/Kris Ventura (65) shared second place at 30 under.

Reitan and Ventura pulled even with an eagle 3 at the 18th. Reitan’s shot onto the green left Ventura less than 7 feet for the putt.

Smalley/Springer were tied atop the leaderboard until a bogey on No. 17. They recovered to forge a three-way tie at the top when Springer’s approach shot on the 18th left Smalley a tap-in for birdie.

The Fitzpatrick team still had two holes to finish and they cashed in on the final one. Matt said it was an ideal situation from the sand trap on the last hole.
“The lie was unbelievable,” he said. “I couldn’t have placed it on a better tee. … Did I plan that perfectly? Honestly, no, but I played it to perfection. What more can I say?”

The Fitzpatrick brothers, who began the day with a four-shot lead, played the first 11 holes in a bogey-free 3 under. Then a double bogey on the 12th — initiated with Matt’s tee shot into the rough and taking a stroke for a drop — and a bogey on the 14th suddenly wiped out their advantage.

The Fitzpatricks set a tournament record by posting 57 in Saturday’s four-ball competition.

Ben Martin/Trace Crowe (66) and the Danish tandem of Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen/Jacob Skov Olesen (66) tied for fourth place at 28 under. Martin/Crowe had eight birdies but two bogeys, while Neergaard-Petersen/Skov Olesen did not make a bogey.

There was a three-way tie for sixth place at 27 under with Billy Horschel/Tom Hoge (68), Eric Cole/Hank Lebioda (68) and Doug Ghim/Jeffrey Kang (70).

The start of the final round was delayed a couple of hours because of morning storms. That led to adjustments with groups beginning on Nos. 1 and 10.

NELLY KORDA LANDS 3RD MAJOR WIN AT CHEVRON, REGAINS NO. 1 RANKING

Nelly Korda returned to the mountaintop Sunday in Houston by going wire to wire for her second Chevron Championship title in three years and regaining the World No. 1 ranking in the process.

Korda shot a tidy 2-under-par 70 in the final round at Memorial Park Golf Course and won the season’s first major by a comfortable five-shot margin. She opened with consecutive 65s to take a six-shot advantage into the weekend before finishing the job at 18-under 270.

“That was a hard weekend. Honestly, having that big of a lead, it’s not easy,” Korda said. “It was definitely one of the hardest things I’ve had to do mentally.

“But I have an amazing support system, amazing family right behind me, amazing caddie that’s on the bag, and just happy to get it done.”

Ruoning Yin of China posted a 69 and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit shot a 70 to settle for a tie for second at 13 under.

It is Korda’s third career major title (2021 Women’s PGA Championship, 2024 Chevron), tying her with contemporaries Lydia Ko of New Zealand, Minjee Lee of Australia, Anna Nordqvist of Sweden and In-gee Chun of South Korea as well as Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez.

Korda, 27, also wrestled back the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings from Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, who missed the cut in Houston. Korda had been No. 2 behind Thitikul since last August’s Women’s Open.

She also continued an indomitable start to the 2026 season: two victories and three second-place finishes in five starts. It is reminiscent of her 2024 season, when she won six tournaments by May 19 and seven in all.

“I can’t compare. Every year is so different,” Korda said. “I would say the only the thing that’s similar is like when do you get into like a zone like this, you’re kind of in your own little bubble, and that’s what I was feeling in 2024. I was in my own little bubble.

“But as for the way that I am mentally — was mentally in 2024 versus what I am mentally right now, they’re almost two different people as well.”

She celebrated by hopping into a man-made, 4-foot pond built at Memorial Park specifically for the occasion. It’s a holdover of a tradition from when the major, previously known as the Dinah Shore and other names, was held at Rancho Mirage, where the tournament’s winners took a triumphant jump into a pond near the 18th hole.

“So refreshing,” Korda said. “Yeah, it was so hot this weekend in Houston. … And, yeah, I mean, if I’m hoisting the trophy then I’m jumping in. I’m going to keep the tradition alive. Everyone is going to have their own opinion. My opinion is if you kill a tradition it’s going to be gone forever.”

Korda began the fourth round with a five-shot cushion and birdied the first and third holes, both par-5s, to reach 18 under for the tournament. From there it was all pars until a bogey at No. 12, which she chased with back-to-back birdies that removed any doubt.

Tavatanakit, a one-time major champion, was Korda’s nearest pursuer most of the week and entered Sunday alone in second place.

She birdied three of her first six holes Sunday, then petered out, bogeying the par-5 eighth and parring out the rest of the way.

“To be honest, I feel like I didn’t have my A-game at all, but I just managed myself really well,” Tavatanakit said. “Just kept grinding out there. Made really nice up and downs all week, which is great. At the same time, I really wish I had my iron game a little bit better.”

Yin, too, came up short of adding to the one major title on her resume.

“I live in Texas so I just assume I have good vibes here,” Yin said. “So, yeah, I mean, I think this course suits me well, and I think if I can hit a little bit longer it would be great. But overall I think I’m just really proud of this week.”

China’s Yan Liu (67) and South Korea’s Ina Yoon (68) tied for fourth at 12 under. Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea, who has won two tournaments this season, finished a distant sixth place at 7 under following a 69 as only a select few golfers went double-digits under par at the first-time major championship venue.

AUTO RACING

CARSON HOCEVAR AVOIDS BIG ONE AT TALLADEGA, NABS FIRST CUP SERIES WIN

Carson Hocevar told his fans on Instagram during the week he would win at Talladega Superspeedway.

He finally did his part to perfection on Sunday.

The Spire Motorsport driver recorded his first NASCAR Cup Series win, pulling away from Chris Buescher off the final turn in a three-lap shootout to win the wreck-ridden Jack Link’s 500 in Talladega, Ala.

The high-speed, 188-lap drafting race was interrupted by a chaotic accident on Lap 115 in Stage 2 that eliminated many competitors, but the two drivers ran side-by-side until Erik Jones, running third, wrecked with seven laps left.

Hocevar’s No. 77 Chevrolet then beat Buescher’s No. 17 Ford by 0.114 seconds for his first Cup win in his 91st start, becoming the 13th driver to notch his first-ever victory at the Alabama track.

As cars wrecked coming to the final flag, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott and Zane Smith navigated their way to finish third through fifth, respectively.

Hocevar celebrated by sitting on his Chevy’s door, with his body halfway hanging out, and waved to the fans as he slowly drove by the flagstand then pointed the car nose-first against the wall and did a celebratory burnout.

But it took a moment or two to get it right.

“I’ve had this thought up for a while and I’ve messed it up every which way not to do it,” said Hocevar, who led Chevy to its fifth win in the past nine starts at Talladega and second overall in 2026. “I didn’t care if it took me 20 minutes or whatever, I was going to figure out how to do it.”

The 23-year-old Portage, Mich., native took to the social media platform this week and told his fans a win was in store.
“I knew we were going to win, and we did,” he said.

In typical Talladega fashion, the 2.66-mile superspeedway produced several different leaders moving back and forth, including Chad Finchum, making his second start in 2026, coming from the back in his No. 66 Ford along with Cody Ware and leading his first NASCAR laps as the race became 10 circuits old.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs led after the field pitted in three different large groups — a wild session full of mistakes, which featured JGR teammates Denny Hamlin cited for speeding and Chase Briscoe for a safety violation as he roared the pits.

After the varying pit strategies and infractions played out in Stage 1, Ryan Preece’s No. 60 took the checkers for the top points as RFK Racing led the charge. Teammates Brad Keselowski and Buescher were second and fourth, respectively, while Joey Logano was third, Ryan Blaney fifth and Josh Berry sixth — all in Fords.

The Big One, Talladega’s massive crash, occurred on Lap 115 in Stage 2 as the front of the pack got together when second-place Ross Chastain turned leader Bubba Wallace to start the season’s biggest track mayhem by far.

While the front four cars of Chastain, Preece, Buescher and Christopher Bell all drove away unscathed as bedlam unfolded behind them, 26 cars were sent spinning and sliding in a wreck that forced a red-flag condition of nearly 10 minutes.

In hard two-wide racing to end Stage 2, Chastain held off Bell while Buescher, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Todd Gilliland rounded out the first five under the checkers.

INDIANS BASEBALL

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Indians dropped the series finale to St. Paul on Sunday afternoon, 3-1. Indy ended the six-game set with a 4-2 advantage for its first series victory of the season.

St. Paul (11-15) struck first for the second time in this six-game series, with Ryan Kreidler’s two-run home run off José Urquidy (L, 0-1) in the top of the first inning marking the difference. Following the homer, Urquidy retired 10 of the next 12 batters, and struck out the side in order in the third inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, Gabby Gonzalez led off with a single for the Saints. Gonzalez advanced on a groundout, and Orlando Arcia brought him home with an RBI single to make it a 3-0 ball game.

After Alika Williams hit a single off Zebby Matthews (W, 1-2) in the second inning for the Indians first hit, the team remained hitless until the seventh inning when Davis Wendzel singled. A solo home run by Enmanuel Valdez broke up a shutout bid in with one out in the ninth inning against Luis García (S, 1).

The Indians have an off day on Monday before starting a six-game series at the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:45 PM PM ET. No starting pitchers have been named at this time.

INDY IGNITE

GWINNETT, Ga. (April 26, 2026) – It’s official, the Indy Ignite are the top seed for the Major League Volleyball Championship that determines the 2026 champion. The Ignite locked in that honor and the regular-season crown today with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Vibe.

The triumph advanced the Ignite to 21-5, and in less than a week, they could set an MLV record for wins in a season with one in their final two regular-season matches. Even if they lose both and the Dallas Pulse win out – leaving the two teams with identical 21-7 records – Indy retains the top postseason seed by virtue of the first MLV tiebreaker, match result points.

“No win in this league is easy, unfortunately,” Ignite head coach Lauren Bertolacci said. “We knew we’d have to come and battle if we wanted to get that first spot today, which we did. I think that was just important for us. Every milestone that we can reach and every situation that we can be in is really important for us.”

As with many Indy matches this season, the path to victory over Atlanta wasn’t simple – though it looked like it might head that direction when the Ignite rattled off the last seven points of the opening set to break from a tie and take it 25-18. Middle blocker Lydia Martyn and opposite hitter Camryn Hannah combined for six of those seven points, totaling three kills and three blocks in that span.

The Vibe wouldn’t go away quietly, however, leading the entire second frame and collecting the 25-19 set triumph. Neither team led by more than two points until late in set three, and it was knotted at 22 before the Ignite reeled off three straight to move ahead two sets to one. Middle blocker Jaelyn Keene recorded a kill on a rally kept alive by fantastic saves from libero Elena Scott and setter Mia Tuaniga, then outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh pounded back-to-back kills to punctuate the 25-22 set win.

Indy pulled to a 20-15 lead in the fourth set but Atlanta rallied once more to tie it at 21, 22 and again at 23. Martyn responded with her season-high 14th kill of the match to make it 24-23 and Member-Meneh clinched the set and match with her 12th kill.

“We were down in that third set and we were able to turn it around and get that win,” Bertolacci said. “And then we came out a little stronger in that fourth set. We lost the lead but still won after 20. I guarantee, and I keep harping to the girls about it, that the (MLV Championship) semifinals are just going to be so hard and all of these things are going to happen in one game, and we need to recognize these situations, learn to manage them and come out on top regardless. Today was the day that we definitely didn’t find our flow, but we found a way to win and that’s just where we need to be.”

In addition to her 14 kills, Martyn added five blocks to lead Indy in scoring with 19 points and head a strong effort from the middle position along with Keene (six kills, one block) and Cara Cresse (four kills in five attempts, no errors).

“Every game for middles, you have to be available in transition because if you aren’t, then it’s easy for the opponent to just sit on your pin as a blocker,” Martyn explained. “I just try to be loud, even if I’m a distraction and I don’t get the ball, can I pull those blockers? I just wanted to terminate today and just hit balls and, like, I’m going lights out. That was my mentality.”

It was also a welcome sight for Martyn’s coach.

“I think our middles held us up for a chunk of the game, especially at the start,” Bertolacci said. “We were feeding them a lot and they were scoring very well, all three of them. That was very important for us to create space for the pins, who later in the game came in a lot more and were able to really help us sort of solidify the win.”

Hannah, starting at opposite for the ninth time this season, provided an all-around standout effort with 10 kills, two service aces, a block and six digs. Member-Meneh finished with 12 kills and 11 digs for another double-double. Outside hitter Kayla Lund came off the bench to provide a couple key service runs and stellar defensive play that led to 11 digs, along with four kills and a block.

“I felt incredible, mostly because I was extremely jazzed up,” said Hannah, who’s played behind MLV All-Star Azhani Tealer much of the season. “Lydia’s hitting the five-foot line (with kills) 12 times; it’s impossible to not have fun in that environment. I also think the girls are super good about not being uncomfortable in those situations when someone new is out there, so I felt completely comfortable playing next to them and having fun.”

The Ignite host their final two matches of the regular season. Columbus visits Fishers Event Center at 7 p.m. ET Friday. San Diego – a potential MLV Championship semifinal opponent – is the guest for the regular-season finale at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Ticket information for those matches is available at IndyIgniteVB.com.

Tickets for the 2026 MLV Championship, set for May 7 and 9 at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, are on sale via the MLV Ticketmaster website. Prices start at $19 and provide access to both the semifinal and championship rounds. For more information, visit ProVolleyball.com. Both semifinals and the championship match will be telecast nationally on the ION network.

INDIANA BASEBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A string of four unanswered runs was not enough for the Indiana Baseball team (19-25, 6-15) on Sunday (April 26) afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field. IU closed its deficit to three but couldn’t find a late hit with runners in scoring position. Iowa (26-16, 10-11 B1G) held on for a 7-4 win to complete the series sweep in Bloomington. It’s the second-straight year that Iowa has swept the Hoosiers.

Three errors in the first five innings allowed Iowa to take a 7-0 lead in the series finale. Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry (L, 0-5) provided four solid innings in his first start of the year but gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold kept IU in the fight with five fantastic innings out of the bullpen. Both of the runs that Seebold allowed in the fifth inning were unearned.

IU had the bases loaded in the second and sixth inning but left much to be desired on each occasion. In the sixth inning, the Hoosiers had the bases juiced with the top of the order coming up. A pop out and groundout from sophomore outfielders Hogan Denny and Cole Decker left three stranded in a three-run game. IU went quietly in the ninth as Iowa closed out the weekend set.

The Hoosiers will head out of conference play for the final time this season in a midweek trip to Louisville on Tuesday (April 28) evening. Big Ten action resumes next weekend in Illinois against Northwestern. The first game of that series will take place at Wrigley Field on Friday (May 1) evening.

He did so while now allowing a single earned run. Both players that crossed the plate were unearned. The final four innings of his outing were all scoreless. He also racked up six strikeouts on the day.

• Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny had another multi-hit day for IU, his team-lead tying 17th of the season. In his career, he’s up to 96 base knocks over two seasons in Bloomington. He continues to inch closer to joining fellow sophomores Jake Hanley and Cooper Malamazian with 100 career hits.

• Freshman designated hitter Owen ten Oever had his first career three-hit day in Sunday’s contest. On the week, he hit .533 (8-15) in four games. He had a pair of home runs and six RBIs – including a grand slam in the win over Ball State. He also walked three times and had a stolen base in the week’s action.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF

GLENDALE, Calif. – Purdue Women’s Golf placed third at the 2026 Big Ten Championships, the program’s best performance at the conference tournament since 2019. Entering the tournament as the seventh seed, the Boilermakers (+23) played some of their best golf of the season and recorded their second-lowest 54-hole total ever at the B1G Championships (284-283-296—863).

Purdue led the field with 40 birdies throughout the week, securing the third straight Top 3 finish before heading into NCAA postseason play. Freshman Luana Valero (E) and sophomore Lauren Timpf (+3) cracked the Top 5 to earn their sports on the B1G All-Championships Team, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. The two were the first Boilermakers to land on the all-tournament team since Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri in 2019.

Valero’s three-day total of 210 (67-69-74) was the second-lowest 54-hole tally by a Boilermaker competing in the conference tournament, and it was the lowest of her career. Her fourth-place finish was also a personal best, claiming her third Top 10 of the season. Valero led the B1G field with 12 birdies, while ranking second in par-4 scoring (-1) throughout the week. Her opening round 67 (-3) was a career low, and she was the only player to record rounds in the 60s in each of the first two days of the tournament.

Timpf was closely behind her teammate, as she paced Purdue for the second straight day with a final round 72 (+2) to secure her third Top 5 performance of the year. Following a career-low 67 (-3) in the second round, the sophomore caught fire to begin her final round with birdies on four of the first seven holes. She made the turn with a 3-under 32 but did not find a birdie on the back side.

Brown matched Timpf with a team-high four birdies on Sunday, recording a 72 (+2) of her own and finishing 13th on the individual leaderboard. She played the par-3s 2-under during the final round, making birdies at No. 3 and No. 16. Carding a 35 (E) on the back nine was the best by any Boilermaker, and she was a bogey-free 1-under on the last six holes.

Up next, the Boilermakers plan to see their name called on next week’s NCAA Selection Show (April 29), beginning at 4 PM ET on GOLF Channel. NCAA Regional play will take place at six sites (May 11-13).

PURDUE WREATLING

LAS VEGAS — Purdue wrestler Isaiah Schaefer earned more national acclaim with an eighth-place finish at the U.S. Open and cemented himself as a U20 Freestyle All-American on Sunday.

The true freshman from Evansville, Ind., won five total matches at the two-day national tournament competing with many of the top wrestlers in the country. He opened his run with four straight victories including three technical falls for a combined score of 43-6, advancing to the quarterfinals in the 65 kg weight class.

Schaefer went on to win one more match in the consolation bracket to clinch All-America status. Coming off his redshirt 2025-26 season after which he was named Purdue’s Freshman of the Year, Schaefer has four more years of eligibility and projects to be a long-term staple in Purdue’s lighter side of the lineup.

Schaefer showed out last summer as well when he became a Fargo Junior All-American in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Last November in his NCAA debut match, he upset No. 25 Kade Moore and placed second at the Tiger Style Invite on his first day of college wrestling. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his efforts, the first Boilermaker to ever earn that title.

In total, Purdue’s 10 wrestlers amassed 32 wins at the U.S. Open over the weekend.

Redshirt junior James Rowley came up just one win shy of senior freestyle All-America honors, one of two Boilermakers competing in the senior division which is open to all age groups. The former U17 world silver medalist opened strong with two tech falls, a total score of 24-4, to earn his spot in the 79 kg quarterfinals.

Back in the U20 division, freshman heavyweight Tyson Russell (125 kg) took a big leap and was arguably Purdue’s biggest surprise performer. The two-time Tennessee state champion won four bouts, two by tech fall, and also came up just one win short of the podium.

Various other young Boilermakers had strong showings as well within their cutthroat brackets. Vincent Paino (61 kg) led Purdue with six wins, including two pins and two tech falls. Adrian Pellot (74 kg) had five wins, three by tech fall, and redshirt freshman Wyatt Krejsa (70 kg) tallied four techs himself.

PURDUE BASEBALL

LOS ANGELES – For the second time this week, Purdue Baseball hit both back-to-back home runs and three total long balls, but managed only one additional hit in an 11-4 loss Sunday at No. 21 USC.

The Boilermakers (28-15, 15-9 Big Ten) were swept for the first time this season while dropping just their second weekend series.

The Trojans (34-11, 16-8 Big Ten) improved to 12-0 at home in Big Ten play and 25-1 overall at Dedeaux Field.

Avery Moore and Aaron Manias connected for the back-to-back home runs in the first inning to give Purdue a 3-0 lead. But USC answered with a leadoff homer and four hits in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four times and holding the lead for the rest of the day. In the series, the Trojans outscored the visitors 9-3 in the first inning.

CJ Richmond went deep to right field in the ninth inning, grabbing a share of the team lead with his ninth of the season.

Manias homered twice in the series and Moore also went deep twice this week. Trey Swiderski and Quincy Malbrough teamed up for the first set of back-to-back home runs this week, Tuesday vs. Indiana State. Purdue has three pairs of back-to-back homers in a season for the third time this decade (also in 2021 and 2024). Manias has now been part of back-to-back home runs twice in his two years as a Boilermaker.

Jake Kramer pitched a season-high 3 2/3 innings while entering the game in the fourth inning (or earlier) for the first time this season. He retired the first 10 batters he faced, on just 31 pitches, while working three consecutive 1-2-3 innings. But USC strung together three hits in the bottom of the eighth as the lineup got a second look at Purdue’s closer. Adrian Lopez’s three-run homer blew the game open and ended Kramer’s consecutive scoreless innings streak at 20 dating back to March 21.

Kramer accounted for the Boilermakers’ only strikeout on the mound Sunday. It was Purdue’s fewest since also having a lone K in a home loss to Michigan in March of last season. The pitching staff issued only seven walks vs. the Trojans, one shy of its season low in a three-game series this year.

One weekend after five different Boilermakers had at least five hits in the sweep of Ohio State, USC’s acclaimed pitching limited the Purdue lineup to eight runs on 13 hits, with a .140 batting average. The Trojans also played flawless defense on their home field. The Boilers scored in just four of the 27 innings, with Sunday’s game being the only one in which they scored in multiple frames.

Purdue opens a season-long eight-game homestand Wednesday vs. Southern Indiana. First pitch at Alexander Field is set for 6 p.m. ET.

STREAKS EXTENDED

NOTRE DAME BASEBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team came up on the short end of a 7-6 final against No. 22 Boston College in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.

Boston College claimed an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Drew Berkland gave the Irish a spark with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-1 score.

The Eagles plated a run in both the top of the second and the third for 4-1 advantage.

Noah Rooney and the defense hung a zero on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jayce Lee and Dylan Passo put together back-to-back singles, and Parker Brzustewicz went the other way with a right-field single to drive in Lee. Andrew Graham laced a single to left field to drive in Passo to cut the deficit to one at 4-3.

Rooney forced the Eagles into stranding a runner on third with a big two-out strikeout to end the top of the fifth. Bino Watters hit a lead-off double to right-center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mark Quatrani then used a bouncing single up the middle to drive in Watters to tie the game at 4-4.

Boston College regained the lead in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Irish forced the Eagles into stranding the bases loaded, but the Irish responded in the bottom half of the frame. Andrew Graham hit a two-out single to right field, and Drew Berkland belted his second home run of the day to left-center field for a 6-5 Irish lead.

Will Jaisle posted back-to-back shutout innings on the mound in the seventh and the eighth for the Irish. The Eagles, however, used a two-run ninth inning to go ahead by the final 7-6 margin

Drew Berkland registered the first multi-home run effort of his career with two home runs while compiling three RBI on the afternoon. Bino Watters was 3-for-5 with a double and a run. Andrew Graham went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Parker Brzustewicz went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dylan Passo and Jayce Lee each had a hit and scored a run. NOTRE DAME SOFTBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball team (23-27, 11-13 ACC) posted its first sweep of the season Sunday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium, grounding the Boston College Eagles a 10-2 run-rule victory in five innings to close out conference play. The Irish have won four in a row and six of their last seven games.

Notre Dame, who clinched a spot in the ACC Softball Championships last night, put up five runs in the fifth inning without committing a single out to seal the run-rule win. After a scoreless first inning, the Irish offense scored in every inning after, including multiple runs in the final three innings of today’s ballgame.

The 17 hits today tied a season high, tying the March 29th game against Cal. 11 different Irish collected base hits, five posting two or more knocks. Notre Dame hit .586 on the day at the plate, including .467 with runners in scoring position.

Sophomore Caitlyn Early and junior Olivia Levitt both launched homers over the left field fence during today’s series finale. Early drilled a two-run shot to score Mickey Winchell from first base that put the Irish up 5-2 at the time. It was the third of the season for Early, who is now hitting .359 this season.

Levitt led off the dominant fifth inning with a pinch-hit solo shot that found its way into the bleachers in left field. It was the second of the year for the junior and her 23rd RBI of the season, the third-most on the team.

Freshman Ava Zachary had her third game of three or more hits this season, going 3/4 with a RBI and a run scored. Zachary closes conference play with a .440 batting average, as the Mishawaka, Indiana product is well on her way to conference accolades next month.

In the bottom of the third, freshman Lily Hagan roped a ball over the center fielder’s head, scoring Molly Conner and Early to make it 3-2 at the time, as Notre Dame never relinquished the lead after that. It marked the 18th and 19th RBI this year for Hagan, who is now slugging an obnoxious .830 in her rookie campaign.

Sophomore Brianne Weiss capped off a dominant week with a masterful showing, pitching four shutout innings in relief to pick up her team-best 11th win on the year. Over this past week, Weiss was 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA, striking out 21 in 15 innings. The southpaw allowed just a .182 batting average and threw a complete game Friday against Boston College.

Notre Dame closes out the regular season this week with a pair of midweek games, starting Tuesday against UIC at 5:00 p.m. at Melissa Cook Stadium. Admission is free to all Irish regular season home softball games, and the theme is Taylor Swift Night, where fans can create friendship bracelets pre-game before singing along to their favorite Taylor Swift songs throughout the game.

Morehead would re-extend its advantage to 11-9 with a tally in the bottom half of the frame before USI closed the gap one last time, 11-10, on a RBI-single by graduate leftfielder Jesse Velders.

The MSU Eagles would seal the decision with a two-run sixth and a four-run eighth. USI rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth before Morehead closed the 17-13 final.

Wall led the USI hitters with three RBIs and three hits, while Miller had three hits, four runs scored, and two RBIs.

On the bump, senior lefthander Jake Porter had a rough start to the game and took the loss. Porter (1-1), who was the first of nine USI hurlers, allowed seven runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out one in two-thirds of a frame.

SOUTHERN INDIANA SOFTBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Softball closed out its home schedule on Sunday by celebrating its 2026 senior class, but the Screaming Eagles came up just shy in their battle against Eastern Illinois University in a 7-4 decision in the series finale.

USI Softball (13-28, 10-14 OVC) loaded the bases and brought the potential game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning at USI Softball Field, but Eastern Illinois (30-20, 20-3 OVC) held on to take the ballgame and complete a series sweep.

On Sunday, both teams wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Eastern Illinois struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. However, USI quickly answered with four runs in the home half of the first. The four-run inning was highlighted by a two-RBI knock by sophomore third baseman Jordan Mackey that pushed USI in front, 4-3.

After a couple of scoreless frames, Eastern Illinois regained the lead with a two-run fourth inning to go up 5-4. USI nearly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but a play at the plate ruled against the Eagles, as the potential tying run was called out.

The Panthers went on to add a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 7-4.

The Screaming Eagles looked to answer with a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. A pair of two-out singles and a walk loaded the bases to bring the potential game-winning run to the plate. However, Eastern Illinois got a final flyout to close out the ballgame.

Mackey led the USI offense with two hits and two RBIs. Junior catcher Alyssa Mumaw also had two hits, as Mumaw and Mackey combined for four of USI’s five hits. Senior Olivia Money notched the other hit and had an RBI.

In the pitching circle, freshman pitcher Anna Kemp (4-11) suffered the loss after being charged with five runs allowed in 3.1 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Elly Robbins came on in relief and went 3.2 innings with two runs allowed and two strikeouts.

Eastern Illinois starting pitcher Karlie McKenzie was chased after lasting only two-thirds of an inning and giving up four unearned runs. Bryanna French (9-6) settled things down for the Panthers and got the win, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings.

Following Sunday’s ballgame, USI celebrated and recognized its 2026 graduating class of Caroline Stapleton, Maddison Depencier, Olivia Money, and Julianna Hibbs on the field.

Through the end of USI’s contest, the Screaming Eagles remained in seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, as Eastern Illinois maintained its first-place positioning. USI looks to clinch a fourth consecutive berth into the OVC Tournament in the coming days of the final week of the regular season.

The Screaming Eagles close out the regular season on the road at the University of Tennessee at Martin at the end of the week. Friday’s series-opening doubleheader can be seen with an ESPN+ subscription. Additional coverage and live stat links are available on the USI Softball schedule page on usiscreamingeagles.com.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF

The Valparaiso University men’s golf team began the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Sunday, playing the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament at the par-71, 6860-yard Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill. A pair of Beacons finished the opening day of action inside the top 20 on the player leaderboard.

How It Happened

Junior Adam Melliere (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville) tied for the team lead with a 2-over 73 in the first round, tied for 17th in the 45-player field. He had one birdie, which came on the par-4 13th, and bogeyed three holes.

Sophomore Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township) shared Day 1 team leadership with Melliere, also turning in a 73 (+2). Politza birdied two holes in a three-hole stretch on the par-4 13th and par-3 15th, but he had a pair of bogeys and one double.

Redshirt junior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) posted a 76 (+5), finishing third on the team, while Valpo also counted a +7 on Sunday.

The Beacons sit in ninth place in the nine-team field through one round with a 300 (+16), but they are only one stroke behind Belmont and three behind UNI. Southern Illinois leads the way with a 279, while SIU’s Anthony De Schutter and Evansville’s Omar Khalid are tied for medalist honors after both carded a 65 (-6), one shot away from Anthony Delisanti’s MVC Championship record.

Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring

“Interestingly enough, the team hit the ball pretty decently today from tee to green, but our shots around the green and our putts were very poor. Our strokes gained putting for all five of our players was one of the worst rounds we have had this year. We missed a lot of putts inside of 10 feet and we even missed numerous putts inside of five feet. Our putting speed still wasn’t anywhere close to where it needs to be, so we will need to make some big improvements in these next two rounds on the greens. Eight birdies for the entire team in today’s rounds is not going to get it done.”

“Adam and Rob both had terrific ball-striking days. Adam hit 17/18 greens in regulation and he hit 11/14 fairways. Rob hit 15/18 greens and 11/14 fairways. They weren’t able to convert many birdies, with Rob making two birdies and Adam making one. Adam led the field with 14 pars.  Rob was second in the field with 13 pars. We will be prepared for the inclement weather tomorrow and certainly improve upon today’s scores.”

VALPO BASEBALL

Redshirt sophomore Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) homered and had the go-ahead, two-run single, while the Valparaiso University baseball team got quality pitching throughout the day, beating visiting Belmont 5-2 on Sunday at Emory G. Bauer Field. Sophomore Nick Baffa (Glenview, Ill. / Notre Dame College Prep) was the winning pitcher with six solid innings, while redshirt senior Dalton Swinehart (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) dazzled for a second straight outing, securing a three-inning save in the series finale.

How It Happened

Valpo struck first as Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) tripled on a ball that the left fielder could not quite corral in deep left to lead off the bottom of the second, before crossing the plate on a bouncer to short by Brayden Pleau (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly).

Sullivan smoked a home run down the left-field line to lead off the Valpo third, doubling the edge to 2-0.

With two outs and one on in the top of the fourth, Belmont’s Brody Langlotz tied the game with one swing as he homered down the left-field line, a ball that narrowly stayed fair as it whistled over the foul pole.

Valpo responded in the bottom of the fourth as Pleau singled, Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) doubled and Sullivan stroked a two-run single to center to give the Beacons a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Baffa worked around a leadoff error to put up a zero in the top of the sixth, then Swinehart took over and worked a 1-2-3 seventh. The Bruins also went down in order against the righty in the top of the eighth, before Pleau stroked an RBI double down the third-base line to expand the lead to three in the bottom of the eighth.

Belmont got a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, but that would be the only baserunner over three innings against Swinehart, who retired the next three men in succession, queuing the Emory G. Bauer Field DJ to blast the Valpo Fight Song over the loudspeakers.

Inside the Game

Baffa allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four over six innings to earn the win with the quality start. Three of his last four starts have seen him go at least five innings and allow two runs or fewer. He has allowed one walk or fewer in three straight starts.

Swinehart has come on strong over his last two outings, as he has combined for 7 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run while permitting just four hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. He went three shutout innings while striking out two, walking none and allowing just one hit in Sunday’s save.

Swinehart’s save was the 10th of his collegiate career and his first in a Valpo uniform.

Valpo pitchers issued only two walks in the entire three-game series against Belmont.

Sullivan, Pleau and Schembra had two hits apiece for the Beacons, who held a 10-7 edge in the hit column.

Sullivan’s home run was his fifth of the season and the 12th of his two-year Valpo career. He has three long balls in his last nine games.

Redshirt senior Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) continued to build up his on-base streak. He reached safely in all three games this weekend, drawing a walk to push the streak forward on Sunday. Riley has now been on base in 24 straight games, Valpo’s longest since Kaleb Hannahs reached safely in 26 in a row during the 2024 campaign.

Valpo has tied last season’s overall win total with a dozen regular-season games to spare.

Up Next

The Beacons (10-29, 3-12 MVC) will visit Northern Illinois on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in DeKalb. The game will be streamed on NIU All-Access.
