EX-NBA PLAYER DAMON JONES IS EXPECTED TO BECOME FIRST PERSON TO PLEAD GUILTY IN GAMBLING SWEEP

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones is expected to become the first person to plead guilty in a gambling sweep that led to the arrests of more than 30 people, including reputed mobsters and other basketball figures.

A change-of-plea hearing for Jones is scheduled for April 28 in Brooklyn federal court, according to a court filing Thursday. It was originally set for May 6, but was moved at the request of the parties.

Jones, 49, had previously pleaded not guilty to separate indictments charging him with profiting from rigged poker games and providing sports bettors with non-public information about injuries to stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Jones is charged in both cases with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.

A message seeking comment was left for his lawyer, Kenneth Montgomery. He told a judge at Jones’ arraignments in November that they “may be engaging in plea negotiations.”

Jones, a onetime teammate of James, was arrested last October along with Portland Trail Blazers head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and others, including a sports bettor accused of cashing in on injury information.

Jones was one of three people charged in both the poker and sports betting schemes. He remains free on bail.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Jones earned more than $20 million playing for 10 teams in 11 seasons from 1999 to 2009. He and James played together in Cleveland from 2005 to 2008 and Jones served as an unofficial assistant coach for James’ Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-2023 season.

According to prosecutors, Jones sold or attempted to sell non-public information to bettors that James was injured and wouldn’t be playing in a Feb. 9, 2023, game against the Milwaukee Bucks, texting an unnamed co-conspirator: “Get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight before the information is out.”

James wasn’t listed on the Lakers’ injury report at the time of the text message, but the NBA’s all-time scoring leader was later ruled out of the game because of a lower body injury, according to prosecutors, and the Lakers lost the game 115-106.

On Jan. 15, 2024, prosecutors said, sports bettor Marves Fairley paid Jones approximately $2,500 for a tip that Davis, the Lakers’ forward and center at the time, would see limited playing time against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of an injury.

Fairley then placed a $100,000 bet on the Thunder to win, prosecutors said, but the tip was wrong. Davis played his usual minutes, scored 27 points and collected 15 rebounds in a 112-105 Lakers win, prompting Fairley to demand a refund of his $2,500 fee, prosecutors said.

In the poker scheme, according to prosecutors, Jones was among former NBA players used to lure unwitting players into poker games that were rigged using altered shuffling machines, hidden cameras, special sunglasses and even X-ray equipment built into the table.

According to the indictment, Jones was paid $2,500 for a game in the Hamptons where he was instructed to cheat by paying close attention to others involved in the scheme. His instructor likened those people to James and NBA All-Star Steph Curry, prosecutors said. When in doubt, Jones was told to fold his hand, prosecutors said.

In response, according to prosecutors, Jones texted: “y’all know I know what I’m doing!!”

The poker scheme often made use of illegal poker games run by New York crime families that required them to share a portion of their proceeds with the Gambino, Genovese and Bonnano crime families, according to prosecutors.

Members of those families, in turn, also helped commit violent acts, including assault, extortion and robbery, to ensure repayment of debts and the continued success of the operation, officials said in court documents.

A hot hand from outside the three-point arc, Jones once proclaimed himself in an interview with insidehoops.com as “the best shooter in the world.” He played in every regular season game for three consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2006.

After his playing days, he worked as a “shooting consultant” for the Cavaliers and was an assistant coach when the team, led by James, won the NBA championship in 2016.

GOLF

LIV CEO CLAIMS ‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’ AMID REPORTS OF DEMISE

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil admitted the nascent golf league’s finances are “managed very tightly” and said structural changes are on the way, but he remained adamant Thursday that the league will not fold.

O’Neil was interviewed by LIV employees on the TV broadcast of the first round of LIV Golf Mexico City, a day after the Financial Times reported that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was on the verge of cutting its funding for the league it helped launch in 2022.

O’Neil, who has been in the position for 16 months after succeeding LIV’s initial CEO Greg Norman, did not address Saudi Arabia or its funding in the interview.

“For us, we’re business as usual,” O’Neil said. “If you want to ask me if this business is tough, I would say absolutely. If you asked me if we’re managed very tightly, I would say absolutely. Can this be challenging? Absolutely, and that’s what we signed up for, not just me, you, everyone here that’s with us down in Mexico City. We signed up for this adventure, and it is the ride of a lifetime, or should I say, round of a lifetime.”

Both O’Neil and LIV broadcasters have poked fun at the report and the speculation that ensued. At the top of the broadcast, David Feherty called the reports “absolute nonsense” while Arlo White made LIV out as victims by adding, “It must be exhausting trying to will the LIV Golf league out of existence.”

As for O’Neil’s interview, he seemed to confirm that LIV executives met in New York this week while refuting the idea that they were “summoned” on an emergency all-call.

“I live in New York so it was easy to summon myself there, but it was a lot of reaching and grabbing for headlines and clickbait and stories,” O’Neil said.

O’Neil hinted more than once at structural changes coming to LIV Golf, though it is unclear if that pertained to format, business structure or something else. LIV has already shed its 54-hole tournament format, moving to a traditional 72 holes in order to receive limited Official World Golf Ranking points.

“How we go forward is what I’m really excited about,” O’Neil said. “I talked about some structural changes. They’re coming. You can ask just about the 50 people I met in Augusta (at the Masters). I rolled out the plan. We have one, and it is going to — it might surprise some people. But I will tell you, this notion of bringing teams to market, I had two calls this morning. This notion of do you have to raise money? Probably. This is business.

“But if we keep the trajectory going the way we are and the revenue growth going, this is going to be a really good business for a really long time.”

More than once, O’Neil touted LIV Golf’s global appeal. While it has struggled to gain footing or attract TV ratings in the United States, some of LIV’s most popular events have come in Australia and Asia, markets traditionally underserved by the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour).

Although talks for a three-way merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV petered out after the shock 2023 announcement from ex-PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, a LIV-DP World Tour merger has been rumored before. LIV Golf also has a strategic alignment with the Asian Tour.

“From a business standpoint, we did almost a half a billion dollars in sponsorship last year with big brands like Rolex and HSBC, Aramco. These are global brands. I’m thinking we’re in a wonderful position,” O’Neil said. “From a structural standpoint, this business will continue to evolve as it has over the last 12 months. The good news for us is we know how to put on a show. We know how to grow the game. …

“We have the hard stuff good. But will there be a change in how we operate? Of course. I would have told you that last year and six months ago. We are looking to blend a version of LIV and the national opens, the great national opens around the world. We think they’re the most underappreciated, undermarketed, underdeveloped assets in golf, and the reason is it gets us on the ground to grow the game of golf.”

VICTOR PEREZ FIRES 9-UNDER 62 TO LEAD LIV GOLF MEXICO CITY

Victor Perez of France posted a career-best 9-under 62 to take a three-shot lead after the opening round of LIV Golf Mexico City on Thursday in Naucalpan, Mexico.

Perez, a rookie on the LIV Tour, sank 11 birdies and birdied his last four holes at Club de Golf Chapultepec to fend off Jon Rahm of Spain, who hit seven birdies en route to a 6-under 65. Seeking his second win of the season, Rahm closed his day with his lone bogey.

“Obviously very happy to finish with four birdies,” Perez said. “First hole, probably got a little bit lucky because I think it rolled through the bunker on the left and then got up-and-down for birdie. The second hole, drove it on and two-putted for birdie. Third hole, hit a great pitching wedge on that really small shelf on the left, two, three feet, so it’s nice to have a short putt.

“Then the fourth, hit a 3-wood a bit on the left, as well. I think it just covered the tree and then made it far enough down to have a gap wedge and hit that one stiff, as well. So it was nice to not have to deal with long putts at the end.”

As for Rahm, whose parents are at this week’s event, he was able to set aside the chatter this week regarding LIV Golf’s future and focus on the task at hand.

“Just not really generally wasting my time on things I can’t control,” Rahm said. “So my mindset was to keep working on the week and operate as normal and keep working on the things that I feel like I needed to be working on and prepare for the tournament. That was it.”

In an interview with LIV employees on the TV broadcast of the first round, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil admitted the league’s finances are “managed very tightly” and said structural changes are on the way, but remained adamant Thursday that the league will not fold.

Seven players, including Americans Dustin Johnson and Harold Varner III, are tied for third at 4 under. They are joined by England’s Ian Poulter, Belgium’s Thomas Detry, Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent and South Korea’s Minkyu Kim and Younghan Song.

“Hitting good chip shots is definitely key, and I did it a couple of times today when I was a little bit out of position,” Poulter said. “But more importantly, I actually played great golf today. Very happy to be in the house. Shame to bogey the last. I was right in the middle of the fairway with a perfect number in and hit a lovely shank. But it’s this great game that we play.”

Fresh off his Masters debut, Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin was among a pack at 3 under, which also included Dean Burmester of South Africa.

Bryson DeChambeau, aiming to become the first player in LIV Golf history to win three straight individual events, is in a large tie for 29th after opening with an even-par round of 71.

Rahm’s solid effort, along with support from McKibbin and England’s Tyrell Hatton (2-under 69), has Legion XII on top of the team rankings at 9 under.

Legion XII are followed by 4Aces GC (6 under), just ahead of Smash GC and Majesticks Golf Club (both 5 under). Despite Perez’s impressive 62, Cleeks Golf Club are fifth at 4 under.

FAST-STARTING CHIZZY IWAI SHOOTS 63 TO TAKE A 2-SHOT LEAD IN LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chizzy Iwai played her first seven holes in 7 under, capped by an eagle on the par-5 16th, and shot a 9-under 63 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead in the JM Eagle LA Championship.

The tournament at El Caballero Country Club — the tree-lined layout subbing for Wilshire Country Club for the second straight year because of course renovations — is the final event before the major Chevron Championship next week in Houston.

Former UCLA player Patty Tavatanakit was tied for second at 65 with Sei Young Kim and Suvichaya Vinijchaitham.

Iwai opened her morning round with a par on No. 10, then birdied the next five and eagled the 16th.

“Good tee time in morning, so very peaceful and I feel comfortable,” the 23-year-old Japanese player said “I had a feeling so relaxing. I had a good feeling.”

On her second nine, she added birdies on Nos. 1 and 5. She matched the lowest score in the two years at El Caballero.

“A little bit thinking 58 or 59,” she said. “But golf is not easy.”

Iwai won the Mexico Riviera Maya Open last year for her first LPGA Tour victory. Twin sister Akie Iwai was second a year ago at El Caballero and won the Portland Classic last summer for her first LPGA title. Akie Iwai shot 70 on Thursday, playing in the group ahead of her sister.

Tavatanakit had eight birdies and a bogey in the morning session.

“My ball-striking felt really good,” Tavatanakit said. “Just a solid day. Made a lot of putts.”

Lauren Coughlin, the winner two weeks ago at Shadow Creek outside Las Vegas, topped the group at 66.

Hannah Green, the 2023 and 2024 winner at Wilshire, shot 67.

“I just feel very comfortable when I’m back here in LA,” Green said. “Doesn’t really matter if it’s Wilshire.”

The Australian has three worldwide wins this year — the HSBC Women’s World Championship on the LPGA Tour along with the Women’s Australian Open and Australian WPGA.

Hyo Joo Kim was at 68 along with former UCLA star Lilia Vu. Kim leads the tour with two victories, winning in consecutive weeks in the Bay Area and Arizona.

Canadian amateur Aphrodite Deng also shot 68. Fellow amateur Asterisk Talley had an early double bogey in a 70 in the 17-year-old’s first start since losing the lead on the back nine at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Defending champion Ingrid Lindblad shot 69. Former UCLA player Alison Lee also shot 69 in her first event following maternity leave in 2025.

Former University of Southern California player Lizette Salas had a 72. She’s playing for the first time since 2024 after recovering from a back injury.

DRONE VIOLATIONS OF RESTRICTED AIRSPACE AT COLORADO ROCKIES GAMES PROMPT WARNING FROM AUTHORITIES

A rash of drone sightings during the Colorado Rockies’ first homestand of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies sent law enforcement scrambling to track down the operators.

No one was arrested after more than a half dozen drone sightings around Coors Field April 3 to April 5, but it is possible the drone pilots could still face a fine later. Still the Federal Aviation Administration and FBI issued a warning Thursday to try to keep drones away from the stadium during the Rockies’ next home games because they are concerned about the potential threat they pose.

“The illegal drone activity did not jeopardize anyone’s safety, but there were enough violations that the teams on the ground were concerned about the number of operators that did not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation. Thus the proactive messaging,” FBI spokeswoman Vikki Migoya said.

The FAA routinely restricts the airspace around major sporting events to protect the crowds and make sure the game can be played without interruptions.

The greatest fear is that someone could use a drone in a terrorist attack that could be just as deadly as the drone attacks that have become common on the battlefields of the Ukraine and Iran wars. That is why the federal government and World Cup host cities are investing hundreds of millions in drone defenses ahead of those games.

But even without a threat like that, Migoya said the problem is that illegal drone activity distracts law enforcement.

“Every instance of illegal drone activity requires a law enforcement intervention to ensure the intent is not nefarious; the fewer violations there are, the more law enforcement can focus on what might be a true threat,” she said.

All the airspace within 3 miles of Coors Field is restricted starting one hour before a game and continuing for one hour after a baseball or football game. Pilots are responsible for checking those restrictions before they fly.

The FAA said that drone operators who violated the restrictions could face fines up to $75,000 per violation and even lose their licenses.

Drones are also required to broadcast their locations. But authorities have other methods available to track down the operators.

JAMES WOOD SINGLES TO SCORE AUTOMATIC RUNNER IN THE 10TH, NATIONALS BEAT PIRATES 8-7

PITTSBURGH (AP) — James Wood singled to score automatic runner Jorbit Vivas in the 10th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 on Thursday.

Reliever Clayton Beeter (1-0) got his first career win despite giving up the ninth-inning run that sent the game to an extra inning. Brandon Lowe hit an infield single to score Jake Mangum, who Beeter walked.

Dennis Santana (2-1) pitched the top of the 10th for the Pirates.

Orlando Ribalta earned his first career save.

ROUPP, GIANTS ALLOW 1 HIT IN SHUTOUT VICTORY OVER REDS

CINCINNATI, OHIO – APRIL 16: Landen Roupp #65 of the San Francisco Giants pitches during the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on April 16, 2026 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Landen Roupp allowed one hit in six innings and Matt Chapman had an RBI double to spark a three-run rally in the seventh and help the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 on Thursday.

Roupp (3-1) didn’t allow a hit until No. 9 batter P.J. Higgins led off the sixth with a single. That ended up being the Reds only hit of the day.

Roupp hit TJ Friedl with a pitch, but Matt McLain struck out and Elly De La Cruz grounded into a double play to end the threat. Roupp walked two, struck out six and left after 87 pitches.

Ryan Walker pitched the seventh and Keaton Winn struck out two in the eighth. Erik Miller struck out the side in the ninth for his first career save.

TIGERS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 6 BY RALLYING IN 9TH FOR RAIN-DELAYED 10-9 VICTORY OVER ROYALS

DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene doubled home two runs to tie the score with two outs in the ninth inning, and Colt Keith followed with the winning single as the streaking Detroit Tigers rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-9 on Thursday in a wild game delayed twice by rain.

Dillon Dingler launched a two-run homer and Greene finished with three hits for the Tigers, who squandered a five-run lead but recovered to win their sixth straight following a five-game skid.

Salvador Perez drove in four for the Royals, including a three-run homer to cap a six-run seventh that gave them an 8-6 lead. Vinnie Pasquantino also went deep, his first homer this season, and Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits and scored three times.

Kansas City has dropped four in a row, all by one run, and seven of nine.

TROUT HOMERS AGAIN, HELPING ANGELS OUTSLUG JUDGE, YANKEES TO SPLIT 4-GAME SERIES

NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Trout hit his fifth homer of the series and the Los Angeles Angels overcame a homer by Aaron Judge in their 11-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon for a four-game split.

Trout, who recently made a mechanical adjustment, went 6 for 16 with five homers and nine RBIs in the series. Trout hit his latest homer with one out in the seventh inning when he sent a 2-2 slider from reliever Angel Chivilli about halfway up the left field bleachers for a 7-4 lead.

Trout homered in his fifth straight game at Yankee Stadium and became the fourth to hit five homers in a series against the Yankees. The others were Jimmie Foxx (1933), Darrell Evans (1985) and George Bell (1990), according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

Trout’s latest homer contributed to a rare loss for the Yankees when Judge and Giancarlo Stanton homer in the same game. Including the postseason, New York is 53-8 when the duo both connect.

BREWERS CAPITALIZE ON 3 STRAIGHT BUNTS TO SCORE WINNING RUN VS. BLUE JAYS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Garrett Mitchell scored the go-ahead run as the Milwaukee Brewers bunted three straight times in the seventh inning to break a tie and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Aaron Ashby (5-0) faced only two batters and got the final out in the seventh to take over the major-league lead in wins.

Toronto stranded the potential tying run at third when Kazuma Okamoto grounded out against Angel Zerpa, who earned his second save. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had hit a leadoff single and reached third on a pair of grounders to the right side.

Milwaukee snapped a six-game skid Wednesday by scoring twice in the eighth inning while hitting just one ball out of the infield. The Brewers didn’t hit any balls out of the infield during their seventh-inning rally Thursday.

RAYS RALLY IN 9TH TO BEAT WHITE SOX, STRETCH WIN STREAK TO 6

The Rays (11-7) trailed by one run three times before pulling ahead against White Sox (6-13) relievers Seranthony Domínguez and Lucas Sims, extending their winning streak to six games.

Domínguez entered with a one-run lead after Everson Pereira homered in the eighth inning, his second long ball in seven at-bats since returning from a sprained ankle. But Domínguez exited to boos with the bases loaded and one out after allowing Caminero’s leadoff home run, a single, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch.

Sims struck out Jake Fraley before walking Hunter Feduccia and Taylor Walls. The White Sox have lost six straight home games after starting 3-0.

The White Sox won three ABS challenges in the third, two on strikes that were called balls against Rays hitters, and then overturning home plate umpire Austin Jones’ called strike three against Miguel Vargas. Vargas hit the next pitch to left for his second home run of the season, ending an 0-for-19 skid.

RANGERS RALLY FOR 4 RUNS IN THE 9TH INNING TO BEAT THE ATHLETICS 9-6

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Joc Pederson hit a go-ahead single in a four-run ninth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied last in a 9-6 victory over the Athletics on Thursday to earn a split of their four-game series.

Nick Kurtz blooped a three-run double that Wyatt Langford couldn’t chase down in left field to give the Athletics a 6-5 lead with two outs in the eighth.

Jake Burger and Josh Jung singled to start the ninth against Justin Sterner (0-2). Kyle Higashioka was safe when Sterner fielded his bunt and threw it over the head of Darell Hernaiz at third for an error, allowing Burger to score the tying run. Pederson gave the Rangers the lead, and Ezequiel Duran added to it with a two-run single.

GUARDIANS ROOKIE PARKER MESSICK HAS NO-HIT BID BROKEN UP IN 9TH INNING OF 4-2 WIN OVER ORIOLES

CLEVELAND (AP) — Parker Messick took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, José Ramírez homered for the third time in four games and the Cleveland Guardians opened a seven-game homestand with a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

Making his 11th major league start, Messick (3-0) faced one batter more than the minimum through eight innings before Leody Taveras led off the ninth with a grounder that just eluded diving second baseman Juan Brito and went into right field for a single.

Blaze Alexander followed with a line-drive single to center before the rookie left-hander was removed to a standing ovation from the crowd of 14,748.

HUNTER GOODMAN POWERS THE ROCKIES PAST THE ASTROS 3-2, SNAPPING A 6-GAME SKID

HOUSTON (AP) — Hunter Goodman homered and doubled to help the Colorado Rockies snap a six-game skid with a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday night.

Goodman’s solo shot tied it in the fourth inning and Colorado took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Tyler Freeman, who had three hits.

Chase Dollander (2-1) took over with two outs in the first and pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. He struck out nine and allowed only one hit.

Victor Vodnik walked one in a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Jose Altuve had two hits for the Astros, who have dropped nine of 11.

PADRES BEAT MARINERS 5-2 BEHIND TATIS, BUEHLER FOR 8TH STRAIGHT WIN, 11TH IN 12 GAMES

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr.’s two-run single capped a four-run rally in the second inning, Walker Buehler earned his first win with San Diego and the Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 5-2 Thursday night for their eighth straight win and 11th in 12 games.

Mason Miller struck out the side on 14 pitches in the ninth for his sixth save and to extend his scoreless innings streak to 30 2/3 innings, the longest active streak in the majors. He passed Randy Jones (30 innings in May 1980) for second-longest in Padres history and trails only Cla Meredith (33 2/3 innings, July-September 2006).

NHL ROUNDUP: OILERS CLOBBER CANUCKS, CLAIM 2ND IN PACIFIC

Matt Savoie finished the regular season with his first NHL hat trick, helping host Edmonton steam to a 6-1 win over Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, giving the Oilers home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

With the victory in the regular-season finale, Edmonton clinched second place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers will host the third-place Anaheim Ducks in Game 1 of a best-of-seven Western Conference playoff series on Monday.

Edmonton’s Colton Dach added a goal and an assist, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Josh Samanski also scored. Connor McDavid had four assists, wrapping up the NHL scoring race with 138 points, while Evan Bouchard finished with three assists. Connor Ingram needed to stop just 11 shots for the win.

Rookie Ty Mueller got his first NHL goal for the NHL-worst Canucks, who saw a three-game winning streak end. Kevin Lankinen made 29 saves and assisted on Mueller’s goal.

Ducks 5, Predators 4

Troy Terry drew a high-sticking penalty and scored the tiebreaking goal on the ensuing power play with 2:54 left, lifting visiting Anaheim to a win against Nashville in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Quinton Byfield tallied for the Kings, who captured the second wild-card playoff spot in the Western Conference and will play the NHL-best Colorado Avalanche in the first round starting Sunday. Anton Forsberg stopped 18 shots in Los Angeles’ first regulation loss in April after a 6-0-2 run.

COLTS FOOTBALL

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts answered their two biggest offseason questions by re-signing quarterback Daniel Jones and receiver Alec Pierce.

Next week, general manager Chris Ballard will be looking for more help in the NFL draft — at a critical time in his career.

Yes, the Colts added three new defensive linemen in free agency, but they still need another consistent pass-rushing threat opposite Laiatu Latu and need depth at several additional positions if they want to snap a five-year playoff drought that has Ballard and coach Shane Steichen on the hot seat again.

Ballard heads into draft week with seven picks, the first coming in Round 2, No. 47 overall, and he’s made it clear throughout the offseason what needs to be upgraded.

“The front seven, we’ve had some pretty good players there,” he said during the league’s scouting combine in Indianapolis. “But we’ve got to get faster on defense, and we’ve really got to get faster on the front seven.”

The need to find pass-rushing help for second-year defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo became even clearer after defensive ends Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam left in free agency. Latu had a team-best 8 1/2 sacks last season.

Ballard did add two potential replacements by signing defensive ends Micheal Clemons and Arden Key, but Clemons had only 8 1/2 sacks in four seasons with the New York Jets while Key has 30 1/2 in four stops during his eight-year NFL career. That may not be enough to force teams to block Latu with only one guy, exacerbating the necessity of finding help during draft weekend.

Need

It’s not just the pass rush. Ballard traded starting linebacker Zaire Franklin to Green Bay and No. 1 receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh after working out the Pierce deal, and the Colts could be looking for more help at both spots. Indy also could take a quarterback and will be looking for reinforcements along an offensive line that lost right tackle Braden Smith and Danny Pinter, a backup at multiple positions, in free agency.

Don’t need

Tight end Tyler Warren lived up to the hype of his first-round selection last year, making an immediate impact with Jones. And with plenty of bodies on the roster behind Warren, adding another tight end may be more of a luxury than a necessity. Indy also appears to like its specialists. Punter Rigoberto Sanchez continues to be one of the league’s best. They also have two strong kickers already on the roster — Spencer Shrader, who was perfect until he suffered a season-ending knee injury early last season, and Blake Grupe, who finished the season strong in Indy.

Other moves?

Ballard already traded two starters this offseason and he may not be done wheeling and dealing just yet. Cornerback Kenny Moore II, a 2021 Pro Bowler, could be dealt in a move that could clear salary cap room space as Justin Walley, a third-round draft pick in 2025, could be ready to replace Moore. Indy also has given quarterback Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, permission to find a trade partner.

Pick ‘em

Indy sent first-round picks this year and next to the Jets in a trade deadline move for two-time All-Pro Sauce Gardner, one of the league’s top cover cornerbacks when healthy.

INDIANA TRACK

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Indiana track and field team opened the first day of weekend competition from the Wake Forest Invitational on Thursday, April 16th. The mid-distance group saw several personal bests and event winners across the day.

“I thought the group came out and competed really well,” said assistant coach Andrew Poore. “Our 800 runners were at the front of all their sections, either winning or setting a personal best. Cam Marshall continued to show why he is one of the best athletes in the country, but the group as a whole really set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Michaela Quinn capped off the night in the steeple with a 19 second personal best with a mark that made the NCAA regional the year before, so overall, it was a really good first night of racing.”

Ciara Kepner started the day for the Hoosiers in the women’s 800-meter open. She ran a personal best time of 2:10.17 to win the group six competition. Catie McCabe and Nola Somers Glenn followed in groups nine and 10, respectively. McCabe earned second while Somers Glenn finished second in a persona best time of 2:07.23.

In the men’s 800-meter invites, D’Angelo Brown and Camden Marshall won the first and third invite groups, respectively, giving the Hoosiers three group winners on the day. Brown’s time of 1:48.68 was also a new persona best.

Michaela Quinn closed the first day with a major improvement in the women’s steeplechase. Her time of 10:19.72 now ranks in the top-10 on the all-time Indiana record list, sitting at eight all-time.

The Hoosiers will be back tomorrow afternoon as they start the day in Gainesville, Fla. with the Tom Jones Memorial women’s 200-meter.

Abilene Christian will come to town for the return series in a home-and-home agreement against head coach Jeff Mercer’s club. IU went to Texas last year at the beginning of May and completed a series sweep of the Wildcats in its off weekend from Big Ten action.

The Hoosiers are swinging the bats at a high level, helping to spark a 6-3 record in nine games this month. Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie is hitting .529 in April with five home runs and 18 RBIs. As a team, IU has hit 23 long balls since the calendar turned.

Graduate student left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck will get the ball on Friday as he aims to continue is hot run of form. He’s recorded a quality start in three of his last four outings. At home this season, Neubeck has a 25-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s gone six innings in all three of his outings at Bart Kaufman Field this year. Sophomore southpaw Brayton Thomas will have his start bumped up to Saturday.

WEEKEND OFF: Every Big Ten teams gets one off weekend in conference play due to having 17 teams. Head coach Jeff Mercer is 14-3 in those games during his tenure as head coach. Last year, IU swept this same Abilene Christian team down in Texas.

SLUG PICKS UP: IU is starting to tap into some more power at the plate over the last week. In the last five games, the Hoosiers have hit 17 home runs including five in Friday’s win at Maryland and six in Tuesday’s triumph at Indiana State. Eight different players have homered in that stretch.

JUST JAKE: Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley has started 93-straight games since arriving on campus. Only Dustin DeMuth (102 – 2011-12) has begun their career with more consecutive starts since the 2010 season. Hanley has collected 124 hits in that stretch of play as well.

PICKING UP STEAM: Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry has thrown quite well in his last three outings. In that stretch, he’s worked 9.2 innings with 13 strikeouts and just four runs allowed. Included in there was a scoreless effort in a win over Rutgers.

BIG REPLACEMENT: Redshirt junior outfielder Ayden Crouse has stepped in with a big impact in the absence of sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny. Crouse is hitting .538 in the month of April with a pair of home runs and eight runs scored at the top of the order.

Scouting the Opponent

Abilene Christian

• After a postponed midweek game, Abilene Christian will come to town with an 18-18 record and an off weekend from conference play. The Wildcats are 2-4 in WAC action with series losses to Cal Baptist and Tarleton State. Abilene Christian does own a midweek win over TCU this year.

• Graduate student infielder Zandt Payne was an on-base machine and has continued that this year. He leads the team in hits (49), runs scored (43) and on-base percentage (.469). He’s walked more than he’s struck out in 2026 (26-25). Senior infielder Diego Cardenas led the WAC in home runs last year and has already slugged 17 this season.

• Junior right-handed pitcher Aidan Coleman and junior left-handed pitcher Brett Lanman have each started all nine weekends this year. Coleman is 4-0 this season with a 4.63 ERA. Lanman has a 4.93 ERA with a team-best 47 strikeouts. IU faced Lanman last year in Abilene and knocked him out after the fourth inning. Former IU pitcher Evan Whiteaker is on staff for the Wildcats.

Inside the Series

Abilene Christian

• Last year was the first time these two teams have met in program history. The series was set for Bloomington but was changed in the fall to travel restrictions. IU opened the month of May with a sweep of the Wildcats down in Texas.

• The Hoosiers won the first two games comfortably but needed some late magic to finish off the sweep. T.J. Schuyler hit a big home run to get things going and finished the game off with an RBI single.

Purdue has joined No. 1 UCLA (18-0 B1G) as the only teams to win five consecutive Big Ten series this season. The Boilermakers have won 11 of 15 during that stretch, including seven of their last eight in conference play. Since opening their league slate 1-5, the Buckeyes have won eight of their last nine games in Big Ten play. That hot stretch was ignited by consecutive sweeps – at Minnesota and vs. Maryland.

Around the Big Ten this weekend, USC-Nebraska in Lincoln is the only other series featuring two teams that are both over .500 in the conference play.

WEEKEND #7 OF BIG TEN PLAY

• Ohio State (9-6) at Purdue (12-6)

• USC (13-5) at Nebraska (12-3)

• Oregon (10-5) at Illinois (7-8)

• Minnesota (5-10) at UCLA (18-0)

• Michigan State (6-12) at Washington (7-8)

• Northwestern (5-10) at Michigan (7-8)

• Rutgers (5-10) at Penn State (4-11)

• Maryland (4-11) at Iowa (5-10)

• Abilene Christian at Indiana (6-12) – Non-Conference

For the second time this season, Purdue hosts one of head coach Greg Goff’s close friends that he used to work alongside. Justin Haire is in his second season as the head coach at OSU. Goff hired Haire as an assistant at Campbell in the summer of 2007 and the two men worked together for seven seasons (2008-14), with Haire succeeding Goff as the leader of the Camels when Goff became the head coach at Louisiana Tech in the summer of 2014. Purdue and Campbell squared off against each other on Friday of the second weekend of the 2020 campaign at the Campbell Invitational, Goff’s fifth game as the head coach of the Boilermakers.

Due in part to the final two games of a Purdue-Ohio State series in March 2022 getting canceled because of inclement weather, the Buckeyes have played only two games at Alexander Field this decade. That comes on the heels of OSU being the visiting team for the first-ever series at Alexander Field in March 2013 and playing nine games in West Lafayette from 2013-16.

The Boilermakers are 10-5 at home this season and OSU is 7-3 in true road games.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The #14/15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-4, 6-4) defeated the Louisville Cardinals (6-9, 2-8) in a dominant 18-3 victory in their final regular season game of the year.

The Irish were led by freshman Grace Maroney with a career-high six goals and six points in the win. She was followed by senior Emma Murphy, who tied her career-high four goals, while also dishing out two assists, to tie her career-best six points.

Freshman Charley Bacigalupo recorded a hat trick in the win to finish with four points on the night and was followed by sophomore Madison Rassas, who scored two goals in the win.

Freshman Maura Irish recorded a goal, a draw control, and two ground balls. Junior Meghan O’Hare finished with one goal, two ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers (tying her career-high).

Senior defender Abby Lyons also got in on the scoring action as she scored a goal going coast-to-coast, while also causing two turnovers and grabbing four ground balls.

Sophomore Lila O’Brien also tied her career-best with six caused turnovers and three ground balls on the night. Fellow defenders Julia Carr and Franny O’Brien recorded four ground balls a piece, while causing one and two turnovers, respectively.

The Irish defensive presence was strong from the start as the Irish held the Cardinals scoreless through the entirety of the first period. The Irish offense was ready to go as well as they posted an 8-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play. In fact, Murphy had the hot hand to start as she recorded a first-quarter hat trick.

Louisville scored their first goal of the night at the 10:10 mark of the second period to make it 9-1. To follow, Rassas and Maroney would fire off two more goals to give the Irish the 10-goal lead at halftime at 11-1 as Maroney capped off her first-half hat trick.

Notre Dame’s run continued as they scored the first two goals of the second half, but the run was broken up by Louisville’s second goal of the day at 7:17 in the third. With two more goals from Rassas and Maroney, the Irish lead 15-2 heading into the final quarter.

Lyons scored the first goal of the fourth as she took it coast-to-coast on a Cardinal turnover to extend the Irish lead. She was followed by Maroney and O’Hare, whose back-to-back goals made it 18-2.

The Cardinals would find the back of the night one last time to make it 18-3 as Notre Dame secured their final regular season win before heading into the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, NC next week.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S TENNIS

CARY, N.C. – Don’t count these Fighting Irish out. The 10th-seeded Notre Dame women’s tennis squad had its back against the wall against 7th-seeded Clemson, down 1-3. Yet, the Blue & Gold fought all the way back to win 4-3 to advance to the Quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. Sophomore Bianca Molnar was the star of the night, clinching the victory on court one in three sets.

The Fighting Irish claimed the important doubles point to get off to a 1-0 lead over Clemson. In fact, all three Irish pairs won their doubles match.

These two teams met earlier in the season in South Carolina, with ND winning the doubles point but ultimately falling 1-4 in the match. Yet, this time, Notre Dame wouldn’t let history repeat itself.

Despite the early advantage, the Irish soon had their back against the wall. The Tigers won courts four, five and three (in that order) in straight sets to be one point away from victory.

However, Bianca Molnar won the first set on court one (6-1), Akari Matsuno won the first set on court two (7-5) and Jessica Kovalcik won the first set on court six (6-2).

Kovalcik then began the momentum swing by making the first singles punch by knocking off Ria Bhakta, 6-2, 6-2. Matsuno followed soon after by recording a ranked win over No. 69 Rinon Okuwaki, 7-5, 6-4.

Yet, right when Matsuno tied the match at 3-3, court one was heading to a decisive third set.

Molnar then delivered right away by earning a break to go up 1-0, then held serve for the 2-0 advantage. When Molnar was on serve again, up 2-1 at 40-40, she scored the crucial point to go up 3-1. From there, Molnar was absolutely dialed in and closed it out 6-1 in the third set.

This marks the third time the Irish have reached the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament. They’ll look to ride their wave of momentum on Friday when they take on two-seed North Carolina at 6 p.m. ET.

BALL STATE MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

This Week in Ball State Men’s Volleyball: The Ball State men’s volleyball program opens postseason competition Saturday, April 18 as it hosts Northern Kentucky in the quarterfinal of the 2026 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament inside Worthen Arena. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET.

Last Serve: The Cardinals claimed its fourth MIVA regular season championship in five years on April 11 after completing a sweep over No. 9 Loyola Chicago (25-22, 25-20, 25-16), avenging a straight-set loss from earlier in the season (March 5) and solidifying home court advantage throughout the tournament. After falling behind 4-1 early, Ball State seized control behind a strong opening set from Patrick Rogers, who finished with a match-high 16 kills on .500 hitting. Ryan Louis added 10 kills, while Daniel Günther recorded five kills and a match-best four blocks. The Cardinals extended their lead in the second set with the help of consecutive aces from Jacob Surette and maintained control throughout, hitting .727 as a team in the final frame with just one error to secure the sweep.

Ball State began the week versus No. 16 Lewis, falling in a five-set thriller (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 16-18). Rogers led with 21 kills, while Louis had 18 kills and a career-high four aces. Lucas Machado dished out 52 assists and added a career-best 14 digs. Defensively, Victor Scherer posted a season-high 19 digs and Louis recorded four blocks. The Cardinals claimed the first and third sets, including a .400 hitting effort in the third, but Lewis responded in the fourth and edged Ball State in a tightly contested fifth set that featured multiple ties and lead changes before the Flyers closed it out with back-to-back points.

Rogers 2026 MIVA Player of the Year: As the leading attacker for the No. 1 seeded Cardinals, Patrick Rogers was recognized as the 2026 MIVA Player of the Year, announced by the league Thursday afternoon. The New Jersey native leads the conference this season in kills (3.90) and points (4.56) per set, ranks fourth in hitting percentage (.404) and ninth in aces per set (0.37). Throughout the 2026 campaign, Rogers was named the conference’s offensive player of the week on three occasions (Jan. 27, March 30, April 14).

Iandolo 2026 MIVA Coach of the Year: With a conference regular season championship in his first year as head coach, Mike Iandolo was named the 2026 MIVA Coach of the Year. At the helm of the program, Iandolo marched the Cardinals to a 22-4 regular season record and a No. 7 national ranking, which includes 10 ranked wins and a MIVA-topping 13-3 conference mark. Ball State reached a stretch of 13 consecutive home victories in 2026, the 10th-most in the program’s history. As a unit, Ball State leads the league in hitting percentage (.376), as well as assists (12.27) and kills per set (13.44). As the fifth head coach of Ball State, Iandolo became the fourth in the program’s history to win a regular season championship in his first year in the position.

All-MIVA: The Cardinals placed four members onto All-MIVA teams this season, with Patrick Rogers and Lucas Machado being named first team while Ryan Louis and Braydon Savitski-Lynde were named second team.

Rogers earned his third-career first-team honor, leading the conference in kills (3.90) and points (4.56) per set, while ranking fourth in hitting percentage (.404) and ninth in aces per set (0.37).

Machado directed Ball State’s offense to a program-record .376 hitting percentage, totaling a career-best 843 assists in 2026 to move into eighth all-time at Ball State (2,366), while averaging 9.94 assists per set and earning both MIVA Defensive Player of the Week (Feb. 3) and AVCA Player of the Week (Feb. 17) recognition.

Louis sees his first All-MIVA award, being named to the second team after contributing greatly to the Cardinals’ offensive and defensive fronts. The Arizona native ranks fifth in the league in kills (3.33) and points (4.13) per set, seventh in hitting percentage (.323) and blocks (0.84), and 11th in aces per set (0.36). His 72.0 total blocks lead Ball State this season. The sophomore had 15 matches this season with double-digit kills, including a career-high 25 versus Missouri S&T (Jan. 9).

He had five matches this season with five or more blocks, including a season-best six versus Maryland Eastern Shore (Jan. 30)

The inaugural watch list was compiled by the AVCA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Awards committee. The final four will be named prior to the start of the 2026 National Collegiate Championship. The 2026 AVCA Player of the Year is to be revealed at the NCAA social event in Los Angeles before the semifinals on May 8.

Machado Climbs the Record Book: Junior setter Lucas Machado has tallied 843 assists so far in 2026, raising his career total to 2,366 and placing him eighth in the program’s record book for career assists. He needs 240 more to move up to No. 7, which is occupied by Quinn Isaacson (2018-2022) who had 2,606. As the primary general of the floor Machado has guided Ball State to a .376 hitting percentage, and if maintained, it would serve as the best team clip in program history. The current all-time percentage is .373, averaged in 1997.

Welcome Back Palilonis: NKU head coach Jim Palilonis is no stranger to Ball State, as he played a key role as an assistant with the Cardinals where he helped guide the program to 15 winning seasons, five 20-win campaigns, and a 2002 NCAA Final Four appearance while overseeing setters, offensive strategy, and recruiting. During his tenure, the 1996 BSU graduate also contributed to the women’s program’s 2010 MAC title and 2011 NCAA Tournament berth.

Match History – NKU: The Cardinals saw two straight-set wins over NKU this season, first taking three sets at Regents Hall on Feb. 21 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22). Ball State then defended Worthen versus the Norse on April 2 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17).

Scouting NKU: Going 2-14 in conference play during its inaugural season, the Norse finished eighth in the MIVA standings, picking up its only wins in a series sweep over Queens (March 26 and 27). With five total wins on the year, NKU has also seen victories over Thomas More (Jan. 23), Maryland Eastern Shore (Feb. 12) and Central State (Feb. 13). On the road, NKU is 1-8.

Northern Kentucky has claimed just one set win since achieving its victories over the Royals, dropping 12 of 13 frames played in the month of April so far. That sole set win came in NKU’s most recent contest at McKendree on April 11, which it lost in four.

As a unit, NKU ranks last in the MIVA in all statistics except blocks (7th: 1.63/set) and digs (6th: 8.16/set).

Individually, the Norse’s attacking is led by junior outside Griffin Wheatly who averages 2.71 kills per set (16th MIVA) on .206 hitting. The defense is paced by sophomore middle blocker Adam Blair, who leads the team with 0.76 blocks per set (11th MIVA), and Will McElveen who leads the team in digs with 1.51 per set (17th MIVA).

EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  Ben Wierzba has been hired as the 12th head coach in Evansville Women’s Basketball program history, UE Director of Athletics Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried announced Thursday afternoon.

A public introduction will take place on Friday, April 24 at 2 p.m. inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

“This is a new day for Aces Women’s Basketball,” said Siegfried. “Ben Wierzba is a proven leader who has been part of building a championship program, and more importantly, he is someone who cares deeply about student-athletes. When I offered him the position, his emotion said everything about how much this opportunity means to him. He understands Evansville, he values relationships and accountability, and he is ready to make an immediate impact on our program and in our community.”

In a coaching career that has spanned 25 years across nine different institutions, Wierzba has established a track record of success. Wierzba’s most recent stop came as the associate head coach at Miami University, where he helped orchestrate a turnaround that culminated in MAC Regular Season and Tournament titles and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2025-26.

No stranger to the University of Evansville, Wierzba served as an assistant coach for the Purple Aces’ men’s basketball program from 2007-10.

“The University of Evansville holds a truly special place in my heart,” said Wierzba. “I spent three meaningful years here early in my career over 15 years ago, and it’s also where I met my wife—so this opportunity feels incredibly full circle for our family. I’m grateful for the chance to return and lead the women’s basketball program. We’re ready to hit the ground running, build strong relationships, and develop a culture that competes at a high level. I’m excited to get to work and build this into a winning program that our players, university, and community can be proud of.”

In three seasons in Oxford, Wierzba helped the Redhawks to a record of 56-39, including a 33-21 mark in the MAC. In 2024-25, Wierzba helped guide Miami to a 10-win improvement and an appearance in the WNIT. This past season, the Redhawks were one of the top mid-major teams in the country, going 28-7 with a 16-2 record in MAC play, earning a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Redhawks finished the season ranked eighth in the Mid Major Top 25 poll.

Prior to his time at Miami, Wierzba served as an assistant coach at Mercer University, where he helped the Bears become mainstays in the NCAA Tournament. From 2015-2023, Wierzba helped Mercer post a record of 166-80 with an 87-24 record in the Southern Conference. The Bears won five SoCon Regular Season and four SoCon Tournament titles from 2015-22, making four NCAA Tournament appearances and two appearances in the WNIT. From February 24, 2017 to March 2, 2019, Mercer won 34 consecutive regular season SoCon games. During his time in Georgia, Wierzba mentored five SoCon Players of the Year, four SoCon Defensive Players of the Year, two SoCon Freshmen of the Year, one Academic All-American, and one WNBA Draft selection.

Before arriving at Mercer, Wierzba spent one season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at SIU Edwardsville in 2014-15, where he helped the Cougars to their most Division I and Ohio Valley Conference wins in program history at the time.

Wierzba’s first head coaching job came as the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Illinois Springfield from 2010-14. In Springfield, Wierzba guided the Prairie Stars through their transition to NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Wierzba took the team to three consecutive GLVC Tournaments from 2012-14 and mentored one All-GLVC First Team selection, two All-GLVC Second Team selections, and two GLVC All-Defensive Team selections.

As a student-athlete, Wierzba was an All-Region 24 selection at Lake Land College before helping South Alabama reach the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and earning All-GLVC honors at SIUE in 1998-99.

Wierzba and his wife, Liz, have three children, Addy, Livvy and Eli.

VALPO BASEBALL

Valparaiso (9-23, 2-7 MVC)

at UIC (12-21-1, 7-5 MVC)

Curtis Granderson Stadium (1,784) | Chicago, Ill.

Friday, April 17, 6 p.m. CT – RHP Adam Guazzo

Saturday, April 18, 2 p.m. CT – RHP Connor Lockwood

Sunday, April 19, 4 p.m. CT – RHP Nick Baffa

Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will play its closest geographic Missouri Valley Conference foe this weekend as the Beacons make the short jaunt west to battle UIC in a three-game series at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago. This will mark Valpo’s first MVC road games that take place on the opponent’s home field this season as Valpo’s only road set in league play thus far was held in Evansville against Murray State.

Last Time Out: The Beacons captured their first series-opening victory of the season on Friday with a convincing 9-2 success story over Bradley on a day where all three phases of the game played well for the Brown & Gold. However, the Braves battled back to win the series, taking Saturday’s game 9-6 and Sunday’s high-scoring rubber match 11-10. Valpo tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday, but Bradley hit a two-out home run in the top of the ninth that proved to be the game winner. Tuesday’s midweek game at Notre Dame was tied 1-1 as late as the bottom of the sixth, but the Fighting Irish got three in that frame and two in the seventh to beat the Beacons 6-1. Case Sullivan was the offensive star for the Brown & Gold with three hits including a home run.

Following the Beacons: All three games this weekend will air on ESPN+ with Sam Brief, Andrés Tejeda and Max Anderson on the call. Links to live video and stats will be available on ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (221-394) is in his 13th season in charge of the program and his 20th overall at Valpo including seven seasons as an assistant coach. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19, 2024 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

Series Notes: Valpo is 66-82 all-time against UIC in a longtime series that dates back to 1977. Valpo dropped all three at Emory G. Bauer field last season including a seven-inning no-hitter by Brandon Bak in the series finale. Valpo has lost six of the last seven matchups although they did prevail 20-0 the last time they played the Flames at Curtis Granderson Stadium, April 28, 2024.

In the Other Dugout – UIC

Coming off a three-game sweep of defending MVC champion Murray State last weekend as the Flames defended their home field by winning 3-1, 8-2 and 10-5.

Dropped a midweek game 12-11 at Northwestern.

Picked to finish third in the MVC preseason poll.

Currently tied for third in the league standings.

Under the direction of head coach Sean McDermott, who is in his fifth season as the team’s head coach and his 27th on the UIC coaching staff. Mac and Schmack (20th year at Valpo, 13th as head coach) have been at their respective schools for a combined 47 years and have been coaching Valpo/UIC games against each other for 20 years dating back to 2007.

Ashton Kampa leads the team in batting average at .333 with six home runs and 19 RBIs.

Notes Wrapping Up April 14 – Notre Dame 6, Valpo 1

Case Sullivan homered for the second straight game after also doing so on Sunday vs. Bradley.

Sullivan upped his season home run total to four, all in the last nine games, and his career total to 11.

Sullivan matched a season-high with three hits, his third three-hit game of the year.

Valpo made big pitches to get out of jams early, but Notre Dame started to take advantage of its base runners late in the game. The Fighting Irish drew 10 walks, accrued 12 hits and stranded 12 on base.

The Beacons also had some opportunities as Valpo left 11 on base.

Junior Louie Kegerreis collected two hits, his third multi-hit game in his last four contests.

Redshirt senior Eli Riley doubled and was hit by a pitch, stretching his on-base streak to 17, the longest by a Valpo player this season. For what it’s worth, three Beacons had on-base streaks of 17 games or longer last season – Aidan Thaxton (19), Liam Patton (18) and Kevin Denty (17).
