NBA PLAYOFFS

AL HORFORD’S LATE TREYS CARRY WARRIORS TO PLAY-IN WIN OVER CLIPPERS

Al Horford connected on four 3-pointers in the final 5:37 of a Western Conference play-in  game, lifting the 10th-place Golden State Warriors to a 126-121 win over the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday in Inglewood, Calif.

Golden State advances to a sudden-death matchup against the Suns in Phoenix on Friday to determine the West’s No. 8 seed and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s first-round playoff opponent. The loss ends the Clippers’ season.

Horford’s late-game hot streak was part of a game-ending, 27-13 Golden State run. Stephen Curry punctuated a 35-point night by burying a deep 3-pointer with 50.4 seconds remaining, putting the Warriors ahead to stay, 120-117. Curry’s seven makes on 12 attempts from beyond the arc paced the Warriors to a 19-of-41 long-range barrage (46.3%).

Despite Curry’s contributions, it was Horford who stole the show.

The 39-year-old veteran had just two points off the bench before his late onslaught. He finished with 14 points, set up for his pivotal baskets off of two assists from Gui Santos that were sandwiched by a pair of assists from Curry.

Santos played a key all-around role for the Warriors, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Golden State also got 20 points from Kristaps Porzingis, including six straight points over one stretch in the fourth quarter.

Porzingis followed up converting a successful and-one opportunity with a 3-pointer, the sequence trimming a nine-point Clippers lead to three with 8:17 to go.

Los Angeles answered when Darius Garland converted his own and-one, then Garland fed Brook Lopez for an interior bucket. Garland wrapped up his big stretch with a 3-pointer that pushed the Los Angeles’ lead back to nine with 6:37 left.

That was the last point the Clippers appeared in control during a game that they led for most of the way.

Garland and Kawhi Leonard, who each finished with 21 points, helped Los Angeles build an advantage of as many as 13 points. The Clippers couldn’t shake the Warriors in the second half, however, particularly as Leonard went cold on offense.

Leonard committed a pair of turnovers in the fourth quarter and scored his only points of the period on a dunk in the final seconds after Golden State had essentially wrapped up the win. Leonard scored 14 of his points in the first half, including going coast-to-coast for a slam just before halftime.

Bennedict Mathurin led Los Angeles with 23 points off the bench.

TYRESE MAXEY (31 POINTS) SENDS 76ERS PAST MAGIC, INTO PLAYOFFS

Tyrese Maxey scored 11 of his team-high 31 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday night for the host Philadelphia 76ers, who advanced to the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating the Orlando Magic 109-97 in a play-in game.

The 76ers, who finished in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a 45-37 record, will be the seventh seed and will face the second-seeded Boston Celtics in a best-of-seven series starting Sunday.

The Magic, who were also 45-37 but lost the home-court tiebreaker to the 76ers via Philadelphia’s 2-1 record in the season series, will face the ninth-place Charlotte Hornets in a play-in game to determine the eighth seed on Friday. The Hornets edged the 10th-place Miami Heat 127-126 in overtime on Tuesday.

Starter VJ Edgecombe (19 points, 11 rebounds) and reserve Andre Drummond (14 points, 10 rebounds) each had a double-double for the 76ers, who are headed to the playoffs for the eighth time in nine years.

Philadelphia’s Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 19 points while Paul George added 16 points.

Desmond Bane put up 34 points for the Magic, who are aiming for their third straight playoff appearance. Paolo Banchero had 18 points while Anthony Black collected 13 points off the bench. Franz Wagner added 12 points.

Neither team led by more than six in the first half, which ended with the 76ers ahead 59-55. Bane and Banchero combined for the first five points of the third quarter before Edgecombe hit a 3-pointer to put Philadelphia ahead for good at 62-60 with 10:54 left, sparking a 14-2 run. The Magic ended the quarter on a 12-6 surge to close within 79-74.

Bane’s 3-pointer pulled the Magic within 83-81 with 9:47 remaining, after which George missed 3-point attempt. But Bane also missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 9:16 left, and Maxey answered with a layup to extend the 76ers’ lead to 85-81.

Orlando pulled within one or two points twice more, but Edgecombe and Maxey responded with jumpers on those occasions. Maxey scored seven unanswered points to give the 76ers a 94-86 edge with 6:25 left. The hosts led by at least four the rest of the way.

MLB ROUNDUP: PADRES SCORE 5 IN 9TH TO EDGE MARINERS, EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 7

Jackson Merrill’s two-run double capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday night as the San Diego Padres stretched their winning streak to seven games with a wild 7-6 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners.

Merrill lined a 2-2 fastball from reliever Jose A. Ferrer down the left field line. Luis Campusano scored the tying run and Ramon Laureano plated the winning run when Randy Arozarena wasn’t able to make a throw home as the ball slipped out of his hand.

The hit made a winner of Alek Jacob (1-0), who tossed two scoreless innings in his first major league outing of the year after being called up on Tuesday from Triple-A El Paso.

Mariners closer Andres Munoz (2-2) was charged with all five runs in the ninth. Luke Raley had a four-hit  game that included a two-run homer.

Dodgers 8, Mets 2

Shohei Ohtani struck out 10 in six innings, Dalton Rushing hit a grand slam and Los Angeles pulled off a series sweep with a victory over visiting New York, sending the Mets to their eighth consecutive loss.

Hyeseong Kim, Teoscar Hernandez and Kyle Tucker also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who improved to 10-2 since April 3 and 14-4 on the season. Ohtani (2-0) gave up one run, two hits and two walks on a rare pitching outing when he was not also used as a hitter. It was the first time Ohtani did not hit on the same day he pitched since May 2021 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels.

MJ Melendez had two doubles with an RBI and Clay Holmes (2-2) gave up two runs over five innings for the Mets, who were held to three runs in the three-game series. Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr. and Brett Baty each went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts at the top of the New York order.

Yankees 5, Angels 4

Jose Caballero hit a game-ending two-run double with one out in the ninth inning as New York earned a victory over visiting Los Angeles.

The Yankees won for the second time in eight games after losing an early 3-0 lead built on an Aaron Judge homer and a two-run single from Trent Grisham. David Bednar (1-2) threw one scoreless inning for the win.

Mike Trout hit a two-run homer and Logan O’Hoppe and Adam Frazier added solo shots for the Angels. Trout became the first visiting player to homer in three straight days at Yankee Stadium since Miguel Cabrera did so nearly 13 years ago. Jordan Romano (0-2) allowed the ninth-inning runs.

Diamondbacks 8, Orioles 5 (10 innings)

Adrian Del Castillo drilled a two-run home run in the 10th inning as part of his five-RBI outing, as Arizona won at Baltimore.

Del Castillo, who also had a two-run triple, matched his RBI total from his first six games of the season combined. Through nine innings, all nine players in Arizona’s batting order collected at least one hit, with Corbin Carroll singling twice.

Jeremiah Jackson homered and knocked in three runs for the Orioles. Starter Kyle Bradish lasted six innings. He was charged with four runs on eight hits in the longest of his four starts this season.

Bo Naylor drove in two runs for the Guardians, who lost for the fourth time in six games. Starter Slade Cecconi allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Connor Brogdon (2-2) relieved Cecconi and surrendered three runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Red Sox 9, Twins 5

Trevor Story hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs to help Boston avoid a three-game sweep with a win over Minnesota.

Boston starter Connelly Early (1-0) earned the win for holding the Twins to one run on two hits in six innings; he struck out five and walked two. Andruw Monasterio collected three hits for the Red Sox. Roman Anthony and Isiah Kiner-Falefa each had two hits in the win.

Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson (0-3) allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits in five innings. Austin Martin and Ryan Kreidler homered for Minnesota, which outscored Boston 19-6 in the first two games of the series.

Reds 8, Giants 3

Sal Stewart slugged a pair of three-run homers, Eugenio Suarez and Elly De La Cruz each hit solo shots, and Cincinnati beat San Francisco at home.

Stewart went deep for the second straight night and has seven homers to lead all rookies. Suarez went 3-for-4, and Spencer Steer had a pair of singles for Cincinnati, which has won three of its last four games.

Daniel Susac doubled in two runs and had two hits for San Francisco, which lost its fourth straight. Starter Tyler Mahle allowed eight runs and eight hits with five walks over four innings against his former team.

Cubs 11, Phillies 2

Nico Hoerner had a career-high five RBIs, and Shota Imanaga matched a personal best with 11 strikeouts, lifting Chicago to a victory over Philadelphia.

The Cubs finished with 15 hits to win the decisive contest of the three-game series and record a second straight victory for just the second time this season. Matt Shaw ripped a two-run double, and Dansby Swanson launched a solo homer to highlight their respective three-hit performances.

The power surge was more than enough for Imanaga (1-1), who overcame a leadoff homer by Trea Turner to shut down the Phillies. The left-hander allowed one run on three hits and one walk before exiting after six innings. Bryce Harper added a solo shot in the ninth inning for Philadelphia.

Brewers 2, Blue Jays 1

Chad Patrick and three relievers combined on a five-hitter, and Milwaukee rallied with two runs in the eighth inning to snap a six-game losing streak.

Toronto starter Dylan Cease was dominant, allowing two hits over six scoreless innings, striking out six and walking three in a 106-pitch outing. The Blue Jays took an early lead on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Sanchez to score Daulton Varsho.

The Brewers broke through for two runs in the eighth against right-hander Tyler Rogers (1-1). William Contreras delivered an RBI single, and Brice Turang’s groundout scored Sal Frelick.

Tigers 2, Royals 1

Wenceel Perez hit a go-ahead eighth-inning home run and host Detroit extended its winning streak to five games with a victory over Kansas City.

Perez’s first homer of the season made a winner of reliever Kyle Finnegan (1-0), who tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Jake Rogers drove in the other run for the Tigers. Gleyber Torres had a three-hit game.

Kyle Isbel’s RBI single accounted for the lone Royals run. Kansas City has scored two or fewer runs in 11 games this season.

Braves 6, Marlins 3

Baseball Team Merchandise

Bryce Elder threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and Atlanta backed him up with three home runs to defeat visiting Miami in the decisive game of a three-game series.

Elder (2-1) allowed four hits and two walks and struck out seven. The Braves got solo home runs from Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley plus a two-run shot from Matt Olson. Raisel Iglesias struck out three while working a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save.

Rays 8, White Sox 3

Junior Caminero, Jake Fraley and Jonny DeLuca homered to back five shutout innings from Jesse Scholtens and boost visiting Tampa Bay to a victory against Chicago.

The Rays stretched their winning streak to five games while sending the White Sox to their fourth loss in the past five. Scholtens (1-0) permitted one hit in a bulk-relief role.

Reese McGuire, who spent the first eight innings at catcher for Chicago, pitched a perfect ninth inning. He also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sean Burke (0-2) yielded four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Athletics 6, Rangers 5

Shea Langeliers smashed a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning and Jacob Wilson hit a two-run shot one inning later to help the Athletics edge Texas in West Sacramento, Calif.

Tyler Soderstrom had an RBI double while reaching base three times and Denzel Clarke added a run-scoring single as the A’s won for the seventh time in eight games. Joel Kuhnel retired four straight hitters to register his third save of the season.

Elevated to the taxi squad on Tuesday, Arrighetti (1-0) became the second starter to debut for the Astros in as many days. With Houston down three injured starters, Arrighetti followed Colton Gordon and joined the makeshift rotation after starting the season with Triple-A Sugar Land.

Rockies left-hander Jose Quintana (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and four walks with one strikeout over 3 2/3 innings.

INDIANA FEVER

INDIANAPOLIS (April 15, 2026) — The Indiana Fever have signed guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, adding veteran depth with former WNBA Champion.

“Shatori is a versatile guard who adds depth to our backcourt rotation,” said Fever COO and General Manager Amber Cox. “She’s a proven veteran in our league who brings a championship mindset and experience, both on and off the court.”

“I’m looking forward to joining an amazing organization like the Fever. I’m excited to play alongside some of the most talented players in the league.” Walker-Kimbrough said. “The success of the team last year not only speaks to the players but also Coach White and her staff, so I’m blessed to be a part of it.”

Drafted No. 6 overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft, Walker-Kimbrough brings nine years of professional experience to the Indiana Fever. Walker-Kimbrough enjoyed early success in her career, helping the Mystics win the 2019 WNBA Championship in her third professional season, doing so with new Fever teammate Myshia Hines-Allen.

With stops at Phoenix and Connecticut, Walker-Kimbrough returned to the Mystics in 2021 where she spent four seasons climbing her way up the Washington record books, leaving the franchise 10th overall in steals (171) and three pointers made (141). This past year, Walker-Kimbrough played for the Atlanta Dream where she appeared in 41 games.

Before turning pro, Walker-Kimbrough spent her collegiate years at the University of Maryland where she ranks third in school history for single-season scoring (681 points) and fourth all-time in career points (2,156).

Walker-Kimbrough will wear No. 32 for the Fever.

INDIANS BASEBALL

PAPILLION, Neb. – Esmerlyn Valdez and Alika Williams continued their offensive streaks as the Indianapolis Indians outhit the Omaha Storm Chasers for the second consecutive game, but lost, 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Werner Park.

Nick Dombkowski pitched a one-two-three inning to open the game for the Indians (4-13), but a bases-loaded double in the second inning by Elih Marrero put the Storm Chasers (9-7) up early, 3-0. John Rave grounded into a force out, but a throwing error by Williams allowed Marrero to score.

In the top of the fourth inning, Ronny Simon led off with a walk. Esmerlyn Valdez followed with a two-run home run, his fourth long ball of the year, to cut the lead in half, 4-2.

The Indians tied the game up in the fifth inning. Williams brought Tyler Callihan home with an RBI single and then scored off Simon’s RBI double. Simon, who reached base four times in the contest, has now hit safely in 13 of 14 starts and recorded a double in three straight games.

Omaha’s Beck Way (W, 3-0) entered the contest in the sixth inning and threw two scoreless frames. Indianapolis’ Chris Devenski (L, 0-1) struck out three batters in the sixth, but not before giving up a single to Drew Waters, who eventually scored from another throwing error by Rafael Flores Jr. to break the tie.

Indianapolis loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out, but Eric Cerantola (S, 4) induced a groundout. A close double play left the Indians empty handed.

The Storm Chasers tacked on the game’s final run in the bottom of the frame, as Luca Tresh’s solo home run extended their lead, 6-4.

The six-game series continues as RHP Antwone Kelly (0-3, 12.27) will take the mound for the Indians against Omaha’s RHP Aaron Sanchez (0-2, 11.17) on Thursday night at 6:35 PM ET.

INDY FUEL

FORT WAYNE- The Indy Fuel spent Wednesday evening in Fort Wayne, taking on the Komets in a make-up game matchup from earlier this season. Despite taking a late lead in the third period, the Fuel fell 4-3 in overtime to the Komets.

1ST PERIOD

Jesse Tucker took the game’s first penalty for tripping at 2:17. This gave the Komets an early power play chance which they took advantage of. Austin Magera scored just nine seconds into the power play to put Fort Wayne up 1-0 early.

A few minutes later, Indy’s Cody Laskosky tied the game with a goal from right in front at 7:25. Marcus Joughin and Chris Cameron claimed the assists on that goal.

Fort Wayne’s Trevor Janicke took an interference penalty at 9:57, giving the Fuel a power play chance. The Komets killed it off.

The period ended quickly after with no more goals or penalties. After one, the Fuel were outshooting the Komets, 9-6.

2ND PERIOD

Indy’s Jordan Martin took a holding call at 7:02 to put the Komets on the power play for the second time. Fort Wayne killed it off.

Tucker took his second penalty of the game at 12:45 after being called for cross checking. Once again, they capitalized on it with a goal by William Dufour at 13:32. This made it 2-1 in favor of the Komets.

It was Dufour who took a tripping penalty next, at 16:53. This resulted in a power play for Indy, but they could not record a shot during the two-minute advantage.

After killing off that penalty, the period ended with the Fuel outshooting Fort Wayne, 16-14 but down two goals to one.

3RD PERIOD

Kirill Tyutyayev took a hooking penalty at 4:07 of the third period, putting Indy on the power play again. They were able to capitalize on it with a goal by Tyler Weiss at 4:30. Marcus Joughin picked up his second assist of the night alongside Cody Laskosky with his second point.

Tyler Paquette scored to make it 3-2 at 8:41. Kyle Aucoin earned his first professional point on the lone assist.

At 12:27, Jordan Martin and Fort Wayne’s Matt Copponi exchanged some blows before both being called for roughing for two minutes.

Tyutyayev scored next for the Komets to tie the game at 15:03.

That was the last thing to hit the game sheet before time expired on regulation. Tied 3-3, the Fuel and Komets each earned a point in the standings but played on into overtime.

IU BASEBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With a thin bullpen leading into the fifth game in six days, the Indiana Baseball team (16-21, 6-12 B1G) knew it would need a great start from graduate student left-handed pitcher Conner Linn. He delivered that and more, providing five scoreless innings enroute to an 8-6 win over Evansville on Wednesday (April 15) evening at Bart Kaufman Field.

Linn (W, 3-0) struck out a season-high seven batters with an impressive four-pitch mix. He gave up just one hit and kept Evansville off the board to earn his third midweek victory of the year. Graduate student right-handed pitchers Reagan Rivera and Michael Sarhatt got the game to the ninth before fellow veteran arm Gavin Seebold (SV, 2) slammed the door.

IU’s offense continues to slug the ball at a high level. Three home runs, including an early two-run blast from sophomore Caleb Koskie, helped put a big enough gap between the two sides. Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley and redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts each went yard in the win. A pair of RBIs from sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian proved crucial down the stretch.

Head coach Jeff Mercer earned his 300th career victory with the Wednesday win in Bloomington. It is just his 10th season as collegiate skipper. 223 of those wins have come with the Hoosiers after 77 in his first two years leading Wright State.

IU will get a weekend off from Big Ten play as it welcomes Abilene Christian to town for a return series. The Hoosiers went to Texas last year in May and swept the Wildcats in a weekend set. First pitch on Friday (April 17) is set for 6 p.m. on B1G+.

Scoring Recap

Bottom First

Caleb Koskie opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left field.

Inside the Box Score

• Eight of IU’s nine starters reached safely at least once.

• IU’s pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts – seven of those came from Conner Linn.

• This was the sixth time this season that the Hoosiers have hit at least three home runs in a game.

Notes to Know

• Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie got to work early on Wednesday night. His first inning, two-run home run gave IU the lead and extended his hitting streak to 18-consecutive games. Since 2010, only Alex Dickerson (21 – 2010) has a longer single-season hitting streak than the young outfielder. Koskie can try and match that mark if he can hit safely in all three games against Abilene Christian.

• Head coach Jeff Mercer picked up his 300th career win in the midweek victory over Evansville. He accomplished the feat in under 10 complete seasons as a collegiate manager. This was the 223rd win during his tenure in Bloomington with the other 77 coming as the Wright State boss (2017-18).

• Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley has his hitting streak out to 11 games, trailing only the red-hot Koskie for the team lead. In the victory over Evansville, Hanley hit his 25th career home run. Hanley has done damage in a variety of ways with 51 hits, 11 home runs, 10 doubles and 20 walks this season. He’s also scored 34 runs for the Hoosiers this year.

• Graduate student Conner Linn went five scoreless innings to pick up his third midweek win of the year. It was the longest outing by a starter in a midweek game for the Hoosiers since David Platt in 2020 (5.0 IP – vs. Cincinnati). It’s also his fourth appearance of the year of at least three innings of work.

Up Next

IU will get the weekend off from conference play as Abilene Christian comes to town for a three-game slate. First pitch on Friday comes at 6 p.m. on B1G+ and will be carried on the Indiana Sports Radio Network via IUHoosiers.com/Audio.

OXFORD, Ohio. – The Boilers (27-15, 6-9 Big Ten) shut out the Miami Ohio RedHawks (31-13, 12-6 MAC) in a dominant 8-0 performance Wednesday night at Miami Softball Stadium.

The Boilers earned nine hits with seven RBI, slugging for three home runs, including an inside-the-parker from Moriah Polar.

With 85 hits as the top spot for the season hits record, Polar is just seven away from breaking the 19-year-old mark with a guaranteed 11 games left to go.

As a team, Purdue continues to set records this season, moving into sole-possession of fifth place for single-season runs scored (252), sole possession of fourth place for RBI (232), and tying third place for single-season home runs (36).

BOILER BITS

Offensive Highlights

Moriah Polar: 2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, HR (inside the park)

Anna Moore: 1-for-3, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI

Maura Condon: 3-for-4, 2B

Bella Douglas: 1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, R

Offensive Highlights

Brooke Perez: (W, 7-3) 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 23 BF

The Boilers began the scoring in the top of the third, plating three runs on Anna Moore’s three-run shot. Moore’s team-leading ninth long ball just puts her just two away from tying for fifth in Purdue’s single-season records.

Purdue struck again in the top of the fifth on Polar’s second-career in-the-park home run, a ball that hit off the wall in straightaway center, her 41st RBI of the year.

The Boilers sealed the door in the top of the seventh, plating four more insurance runs on the second freshman three-run shot of the day, this time by Bella Douglas.

On a double from Maura Condon, who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, and an error from Miami, Purdue took an 8-0 lead heading into the final frame.

Perez closed out a dominant performance on the mound, pitching a season-high 7.0 innings and earning her seventh victory on the year, all while hurling just 63 pitches.

Purdue heads to Rutgers this weekend for a conference series against the Scarlet Knights.

PURDUE SWIMMING

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Eight Purdue swimmers have been selected to compete for country at the FISU America Games, a western hemisphere edition of the World University Games set to be held in Peru in July.

The Boilermakers chosen to represent the UniUSA Team are Keira Kask, Kate Mouser, Lara Phipps and Adele Sands from the women’s roster as well as Maxwell Blume, Biko Hooper-Haviland, Evan Mackesy and Blake Rowe from the men’s team.

UniUSA is the U.S. delegation for the World University Games; it announced the 44 swimmers chosen to compete at the America Games this week. Purdue’s eight total swimmers were the most of any university. The Boilermakers were the only school to have multiple selections from both genders. North Carolina (4 men, 1 woman) was second with five picks.

The swimming events at the FISU America Games are set for the weekend of July 24-26 at the Videna Aquatic Center in the Peru capital of Lima. FISU is the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation), the organizing body of the biennial World University Games. FISU introduced the America Games in 2018. Similar to the quadrennial Pan American games, it features athletes from North, Central and South America.

Mackesy is one of three men on the team that also qualified for the 2026 NCAA Championships. Hooper-Haviland (200 fly), Mackesy (400 IM), Rowe (200 back) and Phipps (400 free relay) all set team records this season.

Of Purdue’s eight swimmers going to Peru this summer, Blume, Kask, Mackesy, Mouser, Rowe and Sands also raced long course for the Boilermakers at USA Swimming’s 2025 TYR Summer Championships in Irvine, California. Selected Purdue swimmers opt to train and complete long course every summer.

The Boilermakers traditionally have representation in the aquatic events at the World University Games, most recently by five student-athletes at the 2025 WUG in Germany. The Purdue Divers won a pair of medals in synchronized events. Steele Johnson and Ben Bramley represented at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Peru. The country is also set to host the Pan Am Games again in July 2027.

BALL STATE SOFTBALL

MUNCIE, Ind. – – Junior Maia Pietrzak took a big one for the team Wednesday afternoon, staying in the batter’s box on a 1-2 pitch which hit her in the forearm and sealed an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Indiana State at the Ball State Softball Stadium.

Trailing 7-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals (16-23) used a two-run laser by redshirt senior pinch hitter Jessica Hoffman to cut the edge to four runs at 7-3.

While Ball State would bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the inning, the Sycamores (19-22) were able to escape the frame with a four-run edge after a liner to left field.

The guests were not as lucky in the final frame, however, as the Cardinals were able to capitalize on a costly error as part of a five-run seventh.

Pietrzak would start the rally with a leadoff walk, while one-out walks to redshirt junior third baseman / catcher Skylinn Pogue and sophomore second baseman Addison Zimpleman loaded the bases.

Senior first baseman Lindsey DeRoeck followed with a bloop single to shallow left center to drive in the first run of the rally. The next at bat was the most crucial of the game, however, as senior left fielder Ashlee Lovett grounded to third base.

ISU would attempt to get the lead runner at home, but an errant throw to the plate helped the Cardinals get two runs on the play, making the score 7-6. In addition, another error helped advance the remaining runners to second and third.

After a walk to redshirt senior right fielder Hayley Urban loaded the bases, another fielder’s choice led to the second out of the inning at home. With two outs and bases loaded, freshman center fielder Paige Kelley drove in the tying run with a hard shot to left field.

That put Pietrzak in the box for the second time in the frame. She started her at bat with a called strike, followed by a ball. Another called strike made it a 1-2 count, while she stayed alive by fouling off the next pitch.

Luckily, the next 1-2 pitch came a little to far inside, hitting Pietrzak to bring home the game-winning run. The clutch plate appearance helped the Cardinals snap an eight-game losing streak heading into a crucial Mid-American Conference series at Miami Friday and Saturday.

Overall, the Cardinals registered six hits in the game, led by two from senior designated player Ella Whitney.

In the circle, the victory was setup by junior reliever Brinkley Kita who allowed just one base runner over the final 3.0 innings. She improved to 5-6 on the season after locking down a Sycamores offense which blasted three-run home runs in both the second and fifth innings before she entered to pitch.
