MLB ROUNDUP: CONTRIBUTIONS FROM NEWCOMERS CARRY NATIONALS PAST BRAVES
Yohandy Morales singled, doubled and homered in his major league debut, Jared Simpson pitched three scoreless innings for the win in his big-league debut, and the Washington Nationals beat the visiting Atlanta Braves 9-5 on Tuesday.
CJ Abrams, back in the Washington lineup after getting scratched Monday night due to back soreness, had two hits and drove in two runs. Brady House knocked in three runs for the Nationals, who have won five of six.
Morales, a 24-year-old infielder, went 3-for-5 while serving as the designated hitter. Simpson (1-0), a 26-year-old left-hander, did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out three.
Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II homered, but the Braves took their second straight loss after winning seven in a row. AJ Smith-Shawver (0-1) was tagged for five runs on six hits in four innings.
Guardians 6, Blue Jays 1
Gavin Williams struck out a career-best 13 over seven strong innings and was supported by three homers as Cleveland topped visiting Toronto.
Williams (13-7) held the Blue Jays to one unearned run on two hits as Cleveland grew its lead over Toronto to 2 1/2 games in a tight race for the third American League wild card. Patrick Bailey, Angel Genao and Angel Martinez each socked a two-run homer for the Guardians.
Spencer Arrighetti (7-8) surrendered two runs on two hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the Blue Jays. Toronto, which had won four of its previous five games, managed only three hits.
Yankees 7, Angels 3
Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs during a three-run first inning and Cody Bellinger went 3-for-5 with two runs, propelling New York to a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Yankees starter Gerrit Cole (8-7) allowed three runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. New York clubbed 14 hits while evening the three-game series at a game apiece.
Christian Moore had a two-run triple and Wade Meckler went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Angels, who lost for the eighth time in nine games. Grayson Rodriguez (4-6) gave up four runs on seven hits in six innings.
Cardinals 13, Dodgers 8
Thomas Saggese hit two home runs and St. Louis tied its season high with five long balls while prevailing at Los Angeles.
Jordan Walker, Ramon Urias and Joshua Baez added home runs and Leo Bernal had a two-run single in his major league debut for the Cardinals. Michael McGreevy (6-9) wobbled through five innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
Mookie Betts had two doubles and drove in four runs for the Dodgers, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. Eric Lauer (8-7) yielded seven runs on eight hits in three innings. Will Smith, back from the injured list, went 1-for-5 with two RBIs.
Rockies 4, Orioles 2
TJ Rumfield hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and Colorado beat Baltimore in Denver, snapping a franchise-worst 10-game home losing streak.
Adael Amador also went deep and singled and Jake McCarthy and Brett Sullivan had two hits each for the Rockies. Jaden Hill (1-3) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Jordan Romano picked up his 14th save by throwing a 1-2-3 ninth.
Jackson Holliday homered among his three hits for the Orioles, whose four-game winning streak ended. Baltimore reliever Luis De Leon (0-1) served up Rumfield’s homer.
Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 1
Bryce Harper had four singles and an RBI, Jesus Luzardo continued his road dominance, and Philadelphia beat Arizona in Phoenix for its sixth consecutive win.
Luzardo (13-5) gave up one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He is 9-0 with a 1.76 ERA in 15 starts away from home this season. The left-hander has won his past four decisions and is 10-1 since May 25. Harper, who also drew a walk, has reached base in a career-high 34 straight games.
Jordan Lawlar went 2-for-3 with a homer for the D-backs, who have lost three in a row and have scored two or fewer runs in six of their past nine games. They are 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position through the first two games of the three-game series.
Reds 4, Padres 3
Jose Trevino singled home the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single in the eighth to lead Cincinnati past visiting San Diego.
Elly De La Cruz opened the game-winning rally with a walk against reliever Adrian Morejon (9-3). Sal Stewart followed with a single to center to put runners at the corners. After a groundout and an intentional walk to the light-hitting Matt McLain to load the bases, Trevino delivered the tiebreaking hit to center.
Rookie Juan Brito, making his Reds debut, followed Trevino with a sacrifice fly to left for an insurance run. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice for the Padres, who lost for the fourth time in five games.
Rays 6, Mets 2
Freddy Peralta spun six spectacular innings to beat his former club and Yandy Diaz homered in Tampa Bay’s three-run sixth as the Rays beat New York in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Following a slow start as the Mets scored and notched three hits in the first, Peralta (7-11) settled in, tossing five hitless frames and retiring his last 13 batters. The Rays acquired Peralta from the Mets for three prospects at the trade deadline.
Francisco Lindor led off the game with a home run and had both RBIs for the Mets.
Mariners 9, Red Sox 6
Lazaro Montes homered in his major league debut for visiting Seattle, which scored in each of the first five innings en route to a win over Boston.
All nine starters produced at least one hit for the Mariners, who snapped a five-game skid with a 14-hit attack. Randy Arozarena contributed a three-run homer, and Dominic Canzone also went deep. The early run support was more than enough for Bryan Woo (10-9), who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.
Mickey Gasper hit his seventh homer in his past 13 major league games for Boston. Jedixson Paez (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Worcester to make his first major league start and Red Sox debut, was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Pirates 13, Giants 12
Brandon Lowe raced home from third base on a throwing error by substitute third baseman Osleivis Basabe with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Pittsburgh, after blowing a six-run lead, to outlast visiting San Francisco.
Lowe led off the ninth against the fifth Giants pitcher, Carson Seymour (0-1), with his fourth hit of the game, a single, then advanced a base at a time on a Nick Gonzales single and an Oneil Cruz infield out.
Cruz joined Lowe with a four-hit night and had a career-high-tying four RBIs for the Pirates, who won their third in a row. Turner Hill had four hits and Drew Cavanaugh three for the Giants, who were attempting to win a third game in three days at three different locations.
Marlins 6, Royals 3
Graham Pauley hit a two-run homer and a two-run triple while Tyler Phillips (4-6) allowed one hit over five scoreless innings as Miami won at Kansas City.
Pauley was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville as major league rosters were expanded, and he recorded a career-high four RBIs. Kyle Stowers also homered for the Marlins, who had just dropped three of four at Washington.
Royals starter Randy Dobnak (2-3) was charged with a season-high six runs on seven hits over six-plus innings. Nick Loftin homered, but Kansas City’s season-best seven-game home winning streak ended.
Rangers 8, Athletics 5
Brandon Nimmo had four hits and five RBIs as Texas topped the Athletics in Arlington, Texas.
Corey Seager doubled twice and scored three runs for the Rangers, who have won three in a row. MacKenzie Gore (8-10) allowed one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, and Jacob Latz struck out both batters he faced for his 28th save.
Jeff McNeil homered and doubled for the A’s, who have lost five in a row. Brady Basso (0-2) went 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits.
Twins 15, Tigers 2
Royce Lewis went 3-for-4 and belted a three-run homer in a 10-run sixth inning as Minnesota smashed Detroit in Minneapolis.
The Twins have outscored the Tigers 26-3 in the first two games of the three-game series, with Kody Clemens and Ryan Jeffers homering in each contest. Jeffers has three long balls in the series. Connor Prielipp (4-7) permitted three hits in five scoreless innings as Minnesota’s bulk reliever.
The Tigers have lost seven straight road games and three games in a row overall. Troy Melton (7-4) allowed six hits and seven runs, five earned, in 5 1/3 innings.MLB baseball news
Brewers 9, Cubs 4
Christian Yelich and Joey Ortiz each hit two-run homers as visiting Milwaukee evened its four-game series against Chicago.
Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras and Ortiz each had two hits for the Brewers, who bounced back from a 17-3 loss in the series opener. Robert Gasser gave up three runs (two earned) over 4 1/3 innings.
The Brewers outhit Chicago 13-6 and moved eight games ahead of the second-place Cubs in the National League Central. Cubs starter Matthew Boyd allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.
White Sox 5, Astros 1
Sean Burke threw 5 2/3 shutout innings as visiting Chicago defeated Houston, leaving each team with one win to begin a four-game series between division leaders.
Colson Montgomery produced his second multi-hit game in as many nights for the White Sox. Burke (8-6) recorded his fifth scoreless outing of the season, permitting just one hit.
The Astros fell for the seventh time in their past 10 home games. Ronel Blanco, recalled to make his first major league appearance since Aug. 15, labored but still tossed four shutout innings. Kai-Wei Teng (5-7) permitted three runs in two innings.
