2026 COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S CONTENDERS

By troyderengowski61@gmail.com

The college football season is rapidly approaching, signifying the opportune moment to assess the teams with the greatest prospects of securing a national championship title. Indiana clinched the championship in 2025 and is anticipated to remain a strong contender this season. The pertinent question now is which teams have the potential to challenge the reigning champions in 2026. Below is a list of the foremost contenders for 2026:

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

*****2025 Record: 12-2, 9-0 Big Ten*****

After an undefeated regular season last year, the Buckeyes faced challenges in the postseason, suffering defeats against Indiana and Miami. Veteran starters Austin Siereveld, Luke Montgomery, and Carson Hinzman played crucial roles during Ohio State’s 2024 national championship run, where the Buckeyes dominated the line of scrimmage with convincing victories over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame. Siereveld, Montgomery, and Hinzman anchor a line that needs to improve significantly, especially since Ohio State is up against one of the toughest schedules in the country.

#####

OREGON DUCKS

*****2025 Record:** 13-2, 8-1 Big Ten*****

The Ducks are the envy of nearly all of college football, so any concerns they have are more like “champagne problems.” They possess a roster that can—and should—compete for a national title. If the Ducks win the championship, it wouldn’t come as a surprise. The key question now is: Can they put it all together when it truly matters?

Last season, they secured a victory against Ohio State in the regular season, but then were decisively defeated by the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl during the playoffs. They also had a competitive match against Indiana in the regular season, only to falter again in the playoff rematch. This team has yet to figure out how to perform at their peak during the playoffs, and addressing this challenge is their crucial next step.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

*****2025 Record: 12-2, 8-1 SEC*****

It is important to acknowledge that the talent in Georgia’s receiving corps has not reached elite levels since the departures of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey following the 2023 season. Although Zachariah Branch established himself as an effective weapon last year, much of his productivity was realized through yards after the catch, which consequently constrained Georgia’s capacity for deep passing plays. In light of last season’s unsatisfactory outcomes, the current season presents further uncertainties, particularly with the exits of Colbie Young, Dillon Bell, Noah Thomas, and tight end Oscar Delp. The Bulldogs have acquired a notable transfer in Isiah Canion from Georgia Tech; however, it appears that the primary solutions will stem from untested players, including Talyn Taylor and CJ Wiley, in addition to a group of true freshmen from a robust signing class.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

*****2025 Record 10-2*****

In the 2025 season, the team recorded a performance of 10 wins and 2 losses. Observing Carr’s development during the previous season elicited considerable anticipation for the forthcoming year. He displayed attributes characteristic of a superstar, culminating in a final season statistics that included 24 touchdown passes, six interceptions, and over 2,700 passing yards. As a result, he will commence this season as one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.

However, it is prudent to temper the enthusiasm surrounding Carr with a note of caution. He will be missing two exceptional players from his backfield, as both Jeremiah Love and Jadarian Price were selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Consequently, Carr must now assume a greater responsibility for propelling the offense.

While the team’s schedule does not present significant challenges, as they are not scheduled to face any opponents that achieved more than five victories until October 17, it is important to consider the following: Carr’s performance against opponents ranked within the top 40 by Football Power Index (FPI) last year was less impressive. In four games, he achieved a QBR of 48.9, completed 63% of his passes, averaged 6.3 yards per dropback, recorded six touchdown passes, and committed five interceptions.

#####

TEXAS LONGHORNS

*****2025 record: 10-3, 6-2 SEC*****

In 2025, the Texas Longhorns concluded the season with a record of 10 wins and 3 losses, including 6 wins and 2 losses in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In 2025 the team’s rushing offense averaged the lowest yardage per game (137.8) during Steve Sarkisian’s tenure as head coach. This situation placed considerable pressure on quarterback Arch Manning. However, after shifting Connor Robertson to the center position and making several adjustments to the offensive line, both the line’s performance and Manning’s execution improved significantly.

The Longhorns are fortunate to welcome back Trevor Goosby, regarded as one of the premier tackles in the nation, alongside Robertson. Furthermore, Texas has acquired Melvin Siani, a right tackle from Wake Forest, who did not concede a single sack last season. This acquisition allowed for the repositioning of veteran Brandon Baker to the right guard position. Additionally, the team has recruited Laurence Seymore, an All-American from Western Kentucky, to fill the left guard position; Seymore has obtained a waiver and is set to join the team during fall camp. This collection of highly skilled position players is anticipated to be instrumental in the effectiveness of Texas’ offensive strategy.

#####

INDIANA HOOSIERS

*****2025 record: 16-0, 9-0 Big Ten*****

Quarterback Josh Hoover faces the considerable challenge of succeeding Fernando Mendoza, who not only won the Heisman Trophy but also led the Hoosiers to a national championship and was selected as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. Hoover is not expected to replicate Mendoza’s accomplishments; however, it is essential for him to minimize negative plays. His 24 interceptions over the past two seasons represent the highest total among Power 4 quarterbacks. Nonetheless, with 31 career starts, Hoover possesses significant experience. Furthermore, head coach Curt Cignetti has demonstrated success in Bloomington with experienced transfer quarterbacks, as seen in the cases of Kurtis Rourke and Mendoza.

#####

MIAMI HURRICANES

*****2025 record: 13-3, 6-2 ACC*****

The University of Miami expresses confidence in the talent present across its roster; however, several critical questions need to be addressed as the fall camp approaches. Primarily, there is a need to ascertain whether the highly regarded true freshman Jackson Cantwell has effectively secured the starting left tackle position. Although he is projected to assume this role, this determination was not finalized following the spring practice sessions. In addition, Miami aims to establish a reliable rotation among its defensive linemen, particularly in light of the departures of Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor. Furthermore, a significant issue remains regarding the selection of a starting linebacker to partner with Mo Toure. Chase Smith exhibited promising performance during the spring as he returned from injury, thereby intensifying the competition for this position.

#####

OLE MISS REBELS

*****2025 record: 13-2, 7-1 SEC*****

Pete Golding successfully maintained unity within the Ole Miss football program following the Lane Kiffin situation, culminating in a strong performance that led the team to the College Football Playoff semifinal. A critical question moving forward is whether Golding can advance the program further. Although Kiffin did not secure an SEC championship, he established elevated standards by achieving 10 or more wins in four out of the past five seasons. Ole Miss is set to return key players such as Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy, and the program has made significant investments in the transfer portal. Given the progress made in recent years, it is imperative that the program does not regress.

#####

TEXAS A&M AGGIES

*****2025 record: 11-2, 7-1 SEC*****

Holmon Wiggins has acquired valuable experience under some of the premier offensive minds in the nation during his tenure at the University of Alabama. He recently joined Mike Elko’s staff in College Station, where he served as the receivers coach under Collin Klein. Following Klein’s departure to assume the role of head coach at Kansas State, Elko determined that it was time to elevate Wiggins to the position of offensive coordinator.

Wiggins now takes charge of a playoff-caliber team that encountered significant offensive challenges in the latter part of the season. During the last five games against Power 5 opponents, quarterback Reed threw eight interceptions, and the Aggies scored only 17 points in a defeat against Texas and merely 3 points in their playoff loss to Miami. Under Elko’s leadership, the team has made considerable enhancements to its skill position talent, particularly at the wide receiver position, although they have lost four starters from the offensive line. Consequently, Wiggins will need to commence his tenure as play-caller with urgency and focus.

#####

TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS

*****2025 record: 12-2, 8-1 Big 12******

Following their appearance in the College Football Playoff, Texas Tech University has elevated aspirations for the upcoming season after experiencing a shutout loss to the University of Oregon in the Orange Bowl last year. The focus is particularly on quarterback Hammond. Head Coach Joey McGuire indicated that he would not have sought the transfer of Brendan Sorsby had Hammond, who stepped in for the injured starter Behren Morton, not sustained a torn ACL last October. Sorsby’s brief tenure at Texas Tech concluded before he had the opportunity to participate in a game, as he was ruled ineligible due to significant violations regarding impermissible betting.

Hammond, a dual-threat quarterback standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 205 pounds, is entering his third season with the Red Raiders. In the previous year, he recorded 680 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also contributing with five rushing touchdowns. Coach McGuire stated that Hammond has demonstrated considerable progress and will be designated as the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders in their opening game against Abilene Christian, contingent upon gaining medical clearance by August 21.
