TOP NATIONAL HEADLINES/PRESS RELEASES

BASEBALL: WORLD SERIES

MILWAUKEE – ROOKIE SHORTSTOP COOPER PRATT MADE THE MOST OF HIS SECOND OPPORTUNITY.

Pratt singled in the go-ahead run to atone for a costly error and the Milwaukee Brewers overcame a four-run deficit behind six scoreless innings from their lockdown bullpen for a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night and a 2-0 lead in the World Series.

The Brewers, who trailed 4-0 in the first inning, took their first lead of Game 2 in the seventh when Brice Turang doubled to open off Tyler Wells (0-2) and advanced on a flyout. Pratt greeted Kevin Kelly with an RBI single to right to put Milwaukee up 5-4.

“I need to be better defensively, but it’s always awesome when you have an opportunity to kind of redeem yourself and make up for it,” said the 22-year-old Pratt, inserted into the starting lineup after being called up from Triple-A Nashville in mid-June. “Probably wasn’t the best swing, but it did the job and gave us the opportunity to score a run. I’m not going to complain.”

The Rays stranded the tying run at third in the ninth for the second consecutive game. Jonny DeLuca doubled to open the ninth off Aaron Ashby, who got the final two outs in the eighth. Victor Mesa Jr. struck out and DeLuca advanced to third on a groundout, but Yandy Diaz struck out swinging on a 3-2 count.

“It’s tough for teams to come in here and play. Our fans are so incredible. It’s a tough environment to play in,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “Tampa Bay had us on the ropes every day. They had runners in scoring position when the game ended both days.”

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Only 10 teams have overcome a 2-0 deficit to win the World Series, the last being the New York Yankees in 1996.

“These Milwaukee fans have been really loud. I know our fans are going to be really loud and excited to see us come back and kind of reset ourselves a little bit,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We’ve got a really good pitcher going, as do they. A lot of confidence in this club to respond. They’ve done it all season long, and they’ll continue to do it.”

Brewers starter Logan Henderson allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in three innings, but the bullpen picked up its eighth win in nine postseason victories. The eight wins match the 2015 Kansas City Royals for most wins by relievers in a single postseason.

JoJo Romero, Dustin May and DL Hall each followed Henderson with a scoreless inning. Abner Uribe (1-0) got four outs and Ashby finished for his third save. Ashby has not allowed a run in 15 2/3 innings over eight postseason appearances.

“Our bullpen doesn’t get enough credit,” Murphy said. “I guess it does get a lot of credit, but you can’t say enough great things about them. Six innings of shutout (work) again.”

Sal Frelick tied it at 4-all with a leadoff homer in the sixth off Ian Seymour. Frelick, who had four homers in 339 at-bats during the regular season, lined a 3-2 fastball 408 feet to center for his second career postseason homer.

Milwaukee cut its 4-0 deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the first, then capitalized on an error to pull within 4-3 in the fourth.

Milwaukee threatened in the eighth, but Jackson Chourio was retired home trying to score from third on an infield bouncer on a close play that was upheld upon review.

The Brewers, whose only other World Series appearance was as the American League representative in a seven-game loss to St. Louis in 1982, also overcame a 4-0 deficit in the NLCS, rallying for a 6-4 victory over the Dodgers in Game 4 to complete the sweep.

Pratt’s game-opening error contributed to the Rays’ four-run first. Diaz continued to second on Pratt’s errant throw from short, then scored on Chandler Simpson’s one-out single. Simpson stole second and scored on Junior Caminero’s RBI single. Liam Hicks followed with his first postseason homer to put the Rays up 4-0.

The Brewers bunched four singles for two runs in the bottom half, including RBI singles by William Contreras and Garrett Mitchell.

Milwaukee pulled within 4-3 in the fourth. Pratt battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a one-out walk, advanced to third on Frelick’s single and scored on first baseman Jonathan Aranda’s fielding error.

Chourio prevented a run when his perfect throw home from left field nailed Hicks trying to score from second to end the sixth. That play was also upheld after a review.

Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, who was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three previous starts this postseason, allowed three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

DEVON DAMPIER, NO. 10 UTAH SURGE PAST NO. 14 HOUSTON TO STAY UNBEATEN

Quarterback Devon Dampier ran for a season-high 150 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries to rally No. 10 Utah to a 21-13 victory over No. 14 Houston on Saturday night in Salt Lake City.

Dampier also threw for 204 yards and had two interceptions. The Utes (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) are one of three FBS teams that remain undefeated.

Conner Weigman threw for 282 yards to lead Houston. Amare Thomas racked up a season-high 133 yards on five catches for the Cougars.

Houston (6-2, 3-2) suffered its first loss in six games against the Utes after blowing a double-digit lead.

The Cougars scored their first touchdown on a 15-play, 75-yard drive that chewed 8:14 off the clock to open the third quarter. Makhi Hughes capped the lengthy drive by plowing across the goal line from 2 yards out to extend the Cougars’ lead to 10-0 with 6:46 remaining in the quarter.

Dampier finally got Utah on the board with 4:25 left in the third on a 22-yard scramble. He also had runs of 16 yards and 12 yards to power the scoring drive.

The Utes took their first lead at 14-13 with 11:57 left in the game on Wayshawn Parker’s 5-yard run off a direct snap.

Jackson Bennee forced a fumble on a strip sack of Weigman with 2:15 remaining, and Jireh Moe recovered the ball at the Houston 9-yard line. Dampier sprinted in for a touchdown one play later to seal the comeback victory.

Houston twice drove inside the Utah 10 before halftime and came away with only three points.

Amare Thomas took a short pass 56 yards on the Cougars’ second drive to get Houston into the red zone. The Cougars drove to the Utah 3 but came away empty when James Chenault Jr. broke up Weigman’s fourth-down pass in the end zone.

Utah drove to the Houston 27 after getting the fourth-down stop, aided by runs of 22 yards and 20 yards from Dampier. But Kentrell Webb picked off a pass from Dampier on the goal line to end the drive.

A 33-yard scramble by Weigman to the Utah 7 on Houston’s ensuing drive helped set up a 24-yard field goal from Jonathan Dimas with 3:44 left before halftime.

The Utes were shut out in the first half for the first time since a 13-7 loss to TCU in 2024.

NO. 19 TEXAS BLOWS 21-POINT LEAD, SURVIVES NO. 7 OLE MISS

Arch Manning passed for 212 yards and accounted for three touchdowns and Raleek Brown amassed 157 rushing yards as No. 19 Texas outlasted seventh-ranked Ole Miss 34-27 on Saturday in a crucial Southeastern Conference clash in Austin, Texas.

Trailing 24-3 at halftime, the Rebels roared back to score three touchdowns and limit the Longhorns to just 19 yards of offense in the first 16:03 of the second half.

But Texas (5-2, 2-2 SEC) turned to its ground attack late to cement the victory, with Brown ripping off a 47-yard run to set the table for Manning’s 1-yard TD on a naked bootleg that put the Longhorns on top for good, snapping their two-game losing streak which dropped them from No. 1 in the AP poll.

Brown added a 28-yard run on Texas’ ensuing drive that allowed Gianni Spetic to give Texas a 34-24 lead on a 33-yard field goal with 2:25 to play.

Lucas Carneiro’s 39-yard field goal with 1:22 left brought the Rebels back to within seven points. Ole Miss then pounced on its onside kick to give itself one more chance but the drive stalled out just outside the red zone with Jelani McDonald coming away with an end zone interception on the final play of the game.

Trinidad Chambliss led Ole Miss (5-2, 3-2) with 250 yards passing. He threw two touchdowns to Horatio Fields but also produced a career-high three interceptions.

The teams traded early field goals, with Spetic hitting from 23 yards out at the 8:27 mark of the first quarter for Texas and the Rebels responding with a 46-yarder by Carneiro with 6:01 to play in the first.

Manning, who had two interceptions, put the Longhorns back on top with a 2-yard keeper with 55 seconds to play in the first, with the touchdown coming after a 43-yard catch-and-run by Ryan Wingo and a bruising 23-yard run by Brown. On Texas’ following possession, Manning delivered a 50-yard TD strike to Wingo, who caught seven passes for 111 yards, to push the Longhorns’ advantage to 17-3.

Michael Terry III expanded Texas’ lead to 24-3 with a 2-yard touchdown run at the 9:21 mark of the second quarter.

Ole Miss got back into the game on the opening possession of the third quarter when Blake Purchase forced a Manning fumble that was recovered by Kam Franklin in the end zone for a TD that cut the Rebels’ deficit to 24-10. Chambliss then hit Fields on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 6:46 to play in the third to make it a 24-17 game.

The Rebels evened things when Fields jumped over a Texas defender to complete a 27-yard scoring pass from Chambliss with 13:57 to play in the game.

WISCONSIN’S DEFENSE STIFLES NO. 16 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S RUN GAME IN VICTORY

Bryan Jackson II scored the go-ahead touchdown Saturday night against his former team and host Wisconsin’s defense limited No. 16 Southern California to 241 total yards during a 24-7 victory in Madison.

Colton Joseph added a touchdown pass and tight end Ryan Schwendeman tacked on a game-sealing touchdown run as the Badgers (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten Conference) physically controlled most of the last three quarters.

Wisconsin outrushed the Trojans 142 yards to minus-17, forcing quarterback Jayden Maiava to basically go it alone. Maiava completed 31 of 50 passes for 258 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions but he was sacked five times.

Joseph hit 12 of 14 passes for only 58 yards but avoided turnovers. The Badgers converted six of 12 third downs and controlled the ball for 32:38, preventing USC (6-2, 3-2) from finding any rhythm.

Gavin Lahm gave Wisconsin a 3-0 edge with 7:20 left in the first quarter on a 33-yard field goal, set up by Bryce West’s 23-yard interception return to the Trojans’ 17.

USC took its only lead of the night at the 9:44 mark of the second quarter when Maiava flipped a 4-yard touchdown pass to Taniela Tupou, finishing off a 15-play drive.

The Badgers grabbed the lead for good when Jackson capped a 75-yard march that lasted nearly eight minutes with a 5-yard scoring run up the middle. That allowed them to take a 10-7 advantage to halftime.

Wisconsin upped the lead to 10 with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter as Joseph and Chris Brooks Jr. connected for a 16-yard touchdown. The Badgers capitalized on a formation that left the Trojans outnumbered on the left side, with four receivers there and just two defenders were left to repel three blockers in front of Brooks.

Schwendeman sealed the outcome by taking a handoff as an up-back in a power formation and nudging the ball across the goal line from the 1 with 5:02 left in the game, polishing off a 13-play drive that chewed up 8:12.

UCF SURVIVES GOAL-LINE STAND, BLOCKED FG TO BEAT NO. 2 BYU IN 2 OTS

Keyone Jenkins hit Grayson Brousseau with a 4-yard touchdown strike to open the second overtime and then passed to Tyren Hornes for a two-point conversion to give UCF a wild 39-31 win over mistake-prone No. 2 BYU on Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 Conference dustup in Orlando, Fla.

The Knights’ defense stopped BYU on fourth down on the Cougars’ possession in the second OT, with BYU’s Bear Bachmeier uncorking three straight incompletions after advancing to the UCF 4-yard line.

Earlier, Bachmeier connected with Legend Glasker for a 28-yard touchdown pass to begin the first overtime but that score was countered by Jenkins’s scrambling 25-yard TD hookup with Josh Derry on the Knights’ possession in the first extra period.

Jenkins passed for 293 yards and three TDs in the victory, and the Knights (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) beat their highest ranked opponent in program history. Hornes had six catches for 137 yards receiving.

Bachmeier finished with 257 yards and one touchdown through the air, with Kyler Kasper catching six passes for 129 yards for BYU (6-1, 3-1).

Overtime was necessitated when Jenkins was stopped short on a sneak from the BYU 1-yard line with 1:42 to play. The Knights had one more possession in regulation but a 46-yard FG attempt by Will Stone was blocked by Faletau Satuala to end the fourth quarter.

The Cougars started the game with a bang, finding the end zone on a 27-yard TD pass from Bachmeier to Kasper. UCF answered with a 2-yard scoring run by Chambers with 13:44 left in the second quarter.

The Knights jumped to the front via Stone’s 20-yard field goal on their ensuing possession. Bachmeier’s 1-yard touchdown burst with 3:47 left before halftime pushed BYU back to the lead at 14-10.

That was plenty of time for the Knights. UCF took over at their own 22 with 1:22 to play in the half and drove to Jenkins’ 6-yard TD pass to Chambers with four seconds remaining to give the Knights a 17-14 lead at the break.

BYU retook the lead on Sione Moa’s 1-yard touchdown plunge on its opening possession of the second half. Jenkins swung back, scoring on a 1-yard TD run with 3:06 to play in the third quarter.

The Cougars’ Matthias Dunn then tied the game at 24 with a 47-yard FG with 12:09 to play in regulation, setting the stage for the furious finish.

BYU star running back LJ Martin missed his third straight game due to a lower-leg injury.

SOUTH CAROLINA STUNS NO. 11 TENNESSEE ON WALK-OFF FIELD GOAL

Malik Orsan kicked a 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play as South Carolina rallied to win its second straight conference game by edging No. 11 Tennessee 27-24 on Saturday afternoon in Columbia, S.C.

Tomiwa Durojaiye recovered a fumble following a sack in the final minute, setting up Orsan’s winning kick as the Gamecocks (4-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) overcame a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit.

LaNorris Sellers was 18 of 32 for 210 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 96 yards on 18 attempts with two more scores. Mazeo Bennett Jr. had six catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Blasted 63-38 in its last visit to the South Carolina capital in 2022, Tennessee (6-2, 3-2) had 120 yards on 32 carries and a score from DeSean Bishop, who had his fourth straight 100-yard outing. Tight end DaSaahn Brame and wide receiver Mike Matthews rushed for scores. George MacIntyre was 16 of 23 passing for 136 yards.Breaking news alerts

Sellers was sharp right away, completing 6 of 7 throws on the opening series and finishing with a 17-yard score to Bennett in the first five minutes.

The quarterback tacked on a fabulous touchdown run on the home side’s next possession, breaking the pocket and dashing away from defenders over 31 yards for a 14-0 lead at 8:17.

MacIntyre put his squad on the board by engineering a 75-yard, 18-play drive that took 9:05. Bishop’s 11th touchdown, a short run at 14:12 of the second quarter, capped the possession.

TJ Metcalf’s interception of Sellers set Tennessee up for its second score, and Brame rushed in from the 1 on fourth down to knot it 14-all with 8:06 left in the half.

Orsan’s 22-yard field goal gave South Carolina a 17-14 lead with 1:44 remaining in the half, but Matthews scored on an 8-yard run off a direct snap to put Tennessee ahead 21-17 at halftime.

After Tennessee had a second touchdown called back on the day, Cooper Ranvier hit a 37-yard field goal at 11:46 of the fourth on the subsequent series for a seven-point lead.

Following a defensive stand by the Gamecocks with 3:35 left, Sellers scored from four yards on a keeper to tie it 24-all with 1:17 to go.

MINNESOTA UPSETS NO. 15 IOWA ON LUKE DRZEWIECKI’S FIELD GOAL

Luke Drzewiecki drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired to lift Minnesota to a 13-10 win over No. 15 Iowa on Saturday afternoon in a Big Ten Conference matchup in Minneapolis.

Minnesota (5-2, 3-1) shined on defense with three interceptions and a fumble recovery to beat a ranked opponent for the third time this season. Darius Taylor rushed for the Golden Gophers’ lone touchdown, and Drake Lindsey completed 14 of 26 passes for 137 yards and an interception.

Hank Brown completed 11 of 21 passes for 136 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for Iowa (5-2, 2-2). Brown replaced Jeremy Hecklinski, who completed nine of 16 passes for 62 yards and an interception.

Minnesota fans stormed the field after Drzewiecki’s kick sailed through the uprights for the rivalry win.

Neither team scored a touchdown until midway through the third quarter, when Minnesota finally punched in a touchdown to take a 10-3 lead.

Iowa’s defense made multiple goal-line stops and faced 4th-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line. Taylor took the snap out of the wildcat formation, found a sliver of an opening and sprinted into the end zone for his fifth rushing touchdown of the season and the 24th of his career.

The Hawkeyes pulled even at 10-all with 3:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. Brown connected with Reece Vander Zee across the middle for a 37-yard touchdown.

A standout special-teams play allowed the Golden Gophers to grab an early advantage. Linebacker Mason Carrier blocked a punt, and teammate Mekhai Smith recovered the ball at the Iowa 13-yard line to set up a short field.

The Golden Gophers could not find the end zone but took the lead when Drzewiecki drilled a 31-yard field goal to put Minnesota on top 3-0.

Iowa battled back thanks to its defense. Cornerback Deshaun Lee picked off a pass by Lindsey and returned it to the Minnesota 21-yard line, and a penalty on the Golden Gophers pushed the ball 10 yards closer to the goal line.

Like the Golden Gophers, the Hawkeyes could not turn a big play into a touchdown. They settled for a 32-yard field goal by Caden Buhr to even the score at 3-all with 6:49 left in the half.

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: CINCINNATI SHOCKS NO. 8 TEXAS TECH; NO. 1 MIAMI ROLLS

Cincinnati quarterback JC French IV threw for four touchdowns and Cole Tabb ran for a career-high 173 yards and a score as the host Bearcats posted their biggest upset in nearly 20 years with a 37-24 Big 12 victory over No. 8 Texas Tech.

After squandering an opportunity to win last weekend at West Virginia, the Bearcats completed a 180-degree turn by dominating the Red Raiders to snap a two-game losing streak.

It marked the Bearcats’ largest win over a ranked foe since they beat No. 7 Rutgers 30-11 on Nov. 18, 2006. It also served as the fourth win over a Top 10 foe in school history.

French, who completed 19 of 30 passes for 172 yards, threw for three touchdowns in the final 7:48 of the first half to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 24-6 halftime lead. He connected with Tabb for a 4-yard score, Malachi Henry for a 5-yard touchdown and Lyviel Waters for 2 yards with five seconds left in the half.

Texas Tech tried to rally early in the third. Peyton Morgan picked off French and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown with 8:49 remaining in the quarter to cut the deficit to 24-15. Cincinnati responded with a nine-play, 80-yard drive that French capped with a 17-yard pass to Larenzo Fenner.

No. 1 Miami 52, Pittsburgh 23

Malachi Toney caught a school-record 16 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes to a comfortable Atlantic Coast Conference win at home against the Panthers.

Toney finished the first half with 11 catches for 147 yards to secure his sixth career double-digit catch game. The Hurricanes (7-0, 5-0 ACC) won their first game as the nation’s top-ranked team since 2002. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah was efficient once again, completing 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Pitt (5-3, 2-3) dropped its third consecutive game since losing quarterback Mason Heintschel for the season with a torn ACL. Holden Geriner made his second start in Pitt’s past three games. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 268 yards and one touchdown.

No. 6 Indiana 13, Michigan 6 (OT)

Josh Hoover scored on a 4-yard keeper in overtime to lift the Hoosiers to a Big Ten victory over Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Turbo Richard rushed 19 times for 68 yards and Lee Beebe Jr. added 56 yards on 12 carries for Indiana (7-1, 4-1), which had not won at Michigan since 1967. Hoover completed 8 of 18 passes for 81 yards and his first interception of the year while Nico Radicic booted two field goals.

Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr hit 20 of 32 passes for 167 yards in his first start for Michigan. JJ Buchanan caught six passes for 57 yards and Trey Butkowski kicked two field goals, including a 26-yarder on the final play of regulation.

No. 18 LSU, Auburn 17

Sam Leavitt threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as LSU routed host Auburn for an SEC win.

Leavitt completed 32 of 45 for a career-high 387 yards as LSU outgained Auburn 552-271. Jackson Harris caught nine passes for 178 yards and two scores for LSU (6-2, 3-2 SEC), which ended an eight-game losing streak in SEC road games dating to the 2024 season.

Byrum Brown passed for 160 yards and rushed for a team-high 21 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries for Auburn (4-3, 2-3), which never led one week after upsetting top-ranked Georgia.

No. 23 SMU 59, Cal 20

Kendrick Raphael rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns against his former team to help the Mustangs pull away from the Golden Bears for an ACC win in Dallas.

Raphael, who rushed for 943 yards and 13 touchdowns for Cal last season, also snared a touchdown pass from Kevin Jennings, who completed 16 of 23 attempts for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Christian Rhodes added two short touchdown runs for the Mustangs (6-1, 3-1 ACC), who outscored Cal 42-0 in the second half after trailing by three at halftime.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 27 of 37 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Bears (3-5, 2-3), who scored first when they moved the ball 65 yards in seven plays on their opening drive. Sagapolutele capped the march with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chase Hendricks.

No. 24 Northwestern 42, Rutgers 14

Aidan Chiles threw three touchdowns and ran for two scores as the Wildcats raced out to a big lead in the first half and rolled to the Big Ten victory in Evanston, Ill.

Northwestern (6-1, 3-1) earned its fourth straight win as Chiles completed 19 of 25 passes for 219 yards and added 83 rushing yards. Caleb Komolafe rushed for 150 yards, which included a 33-yard score that put the Wildcats up 28-3 late in the first half. Griffin Wilde added nine catches for 133 yards and a score.

Antwan Raymond rushed for a season-high 150 yards and Clay Thevenin added 116 yards for Rutgers (2-5, 1-3), which lost its 46th consecutive game against a ranked opponent. Starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan played just three snaps before getting hurt on a scramble. Backup AJ Surace completed 7 of 18 passes for 64 yards.

WEEK 7 PREVIEWS

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) vs. New Orleans Saints (2-4) in Saint-Denis, France

Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Steelers -3; Total: 44.5

Series Rewind: The Saints won three of the last four clashes to take a 9-8 lead in the series. The Steelers scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 20-10 victory in the most recent meeting on Nov. 13, 2022, in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are 1-1 and the Saints are 2-1 in international games heading into the first NFL regular-season game in Paris. With two touchdown passes, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers can surpass Drew Brees (186) for the second-most games with multiple TD passes in NFL history (including the playoffs). Only Tom Brady (233) has more. Rodgers and New Orleans counterpart Tyler Shough enter Week 7 tied for fourth in the NFL with 12 TD passes. Steelers star T.J. Watt only has one sack in his last four games but anchors a defense that has allowed opponents to reach the red zone 10 times — fewest in the NFL. Both of New Orleans’ wins have come away from home. In last week’s road win against the Giants, Saints veteran Alvin Kamara became the sixth player in league history to reach 5,000 rushing and 5,000 receiving yards. Wideout Chris Olave is on pace for his fourth 1,000-yard season in five years and edge rusher Chase Young (5.5 sacks) is on track for his second straight season with double-digit sacks.

Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) at Baltimore Ravens (4-2)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel: Bengals -1.5; Total: 48.5

Series Rewind: Baltimore has won five of the past six meetings despite the teams splitting the pair last season. The Ravens blanked the Bengals 24-0 in Cincinnati in the second matchup. In the second meeting in 2024, Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase caught 11 passes for 264 yards and matched his career best of three touchdowns but host Baltimore won 35-34.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could return to the field after missing the past two games with a left ankle injury. He’s moving in the right direction after being limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Jackson always thrives against the Bengals and holds an 11-2 starting mark against Cincinnati. The two-time NFL MVP has passed for 24 touchdowns against six interceptions against the Bengals. Baltimore split two contests with Tyler “Snoop” Huntley at quarterback, which includes last week’s 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Star running back Derrick Henry lost a big fumble in the fourth quarter that set up Cleveland for its lone touchdown. Henry ranks fourth in the NFL with 534 rushing yards. Cincinnati is coming off a bye and quarterback Joe Burrow said the Bengals are treating this matchup as a big game. Burrow has stayed injury-free so far this season while hitting a league-best 71.4% of his passes for 1,361 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Tee Higgins has a team-best 423 yards and his 27 receptions for tied for the team leadership with Chase (289 yards). Chase and tight end Mike Gesecki share the team lead of four touchdown receptions. One intriguing aspect to the matchup is whether Baltimore pass rusher Trey Hendrickson can sack Burrow. Hendrickson made the Pro Bowl four times during his five seasons with Cincinnati before signing a four-year, $112 million deal with Baltimore as a free agent in the offseason. Hendrickson had 61 sacks and 12 forced fumbles in 72 games with the Bengals and was the runner-up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2024. He owns two sacks in four games for the Ravens.

San Francisco 49ers (6-0) at Atlanta Falcons (2-4)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: 49ers -2.5; Total: 49.5

Series Rewind: The 49ers came out on top 20-10 in their home matchup against the Falcons last season. They have won two of the last three meetings with the Falcons — all of which have been decided by 10-plus points — and lead the all-time series 49-33-1.

San Francisco is 6-0 for the fourth time in franchise history and off to its best start since winning its first eight games of the 2019 season. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been a big part of that success. His 14 passing touchdowns are tied with Kirk Cousins and Trevor Lawrence for most in the NFL, while his QBR of 83.0 is best in the league. However, for the 49ers’ first trip away from the West Coast since Week 1, he could have to operate without three of his top receivers with Mike Evans (Achilles) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring) questionable and Christian Kirk (calf) still on injured reserve. They’ll face an uneven Falcons team that has sandwiched two-game losing streaks on both sides of a two-game winning streak and wants to avoid an 0-3 homestand. Regardless of who’s available at receiver for San Francisco, Atlanta’s pass defense, which ranks 28th in the league allowing 252.0 yards per game, will be challenged this week. The 49ers, though, will be tasked with stopping Falcons star Bijan Robinson, who ranks second in the league with 641 rushing yards.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) at Carolina Panthers (3-2)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Panthers -2.5; Total: 44.5

Series Rewind: Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is 6-3, including postseason, against the Panthers.

It’s a matchup of first and worst in the NFC South on Sunday, and Tampa Bay is putting on the glove in Charlotte. That’s one glove on the injured right hand of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who returns to the lineup for the Buccaneers after missing the past three games with a thumb injury. The Panthers know this foe well. Mayfield previously played for Carolina, while Panthers coach Dave Canales served as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator during the quarterback’s first season with the Bucs in 2023. Regardless of who has taken the snaps for the Buccaneers, running back Bucky Irving has been dependable. He has rushed for 452 yards and scored three total touchdowns, though he missed Wednesday’s practice due to illness. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young will make his 50th career NFL start. Reducing penalties has become a priority for Carolina after the Panthers struggled with discipline in their latest victory over Philadelphia. Tampa Bay has relied on a defense that ranks fourth in the NFL, allowing 299.5 yards per game.

New York Giants (3-2-1) at Houston Texans (2-4)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Texans -10.5; Total: 43.5

Series Rewind: Like the Winter Olympics, the Giants and Texans meet every four years. The Giants lost their first matchup with the Texans in 2002, but they have won the five since.

J.J. McCarthy gets the start after he replaced Jameis Winston with 11:25 left in the Giants’ loss to the Saints last week and promptly threw an interception. From there, he led three straight scoring drives and finished the game with 243 passing yards in limited time. Injuries have affected McCarthy’s development to date. He missed his rookie season after knee surgery in his first preseason and battled an ankle injury last September, but started 10 games in 2025. He’s 6-4 as a starter with a four-game winning streak entering Sunday and says he’s now more prepared to be a starter. The Texans are still searching for the same bite they had as a defense last season. Ryans has owned defensive playcalling the past two games and the Titans won both, but getting to the quarterback and setting the tone with a physical secondary are not the evident calling cards they were in 2025. Blending personnel has been a factor, too. Safety Jalen Pitre “is still week-to-week with his shoulder injury” according to Ryans but “getting better.” Houston’s offense has been humming. C.J. Stroud gets another receiver back in the lineup this week when Tank Dell returns for his first game since Dec. 2024.

Miami Dolphins (0-5) at New York Jets (2-4)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Jets -4.5; Total: 39.5

Series Rewind: The Dolphins have won six of the past seven meetings with the Jets and swept the season series in 2025.

The winless Miami Dolphins are trying to establish an identity under first-year coach Jeff Hafley, while the New York Jets hope to get healthy in time to salvage their season. The Jets could get starting running back Breece Hall back on the field. A right quadriceps injury has sidelined him since Week 3. The Jets are going for their first AFC East win in their first division game at home. New York’s defense could have an edge against the Dolphins’ passing game, which ranks second-worst in the NFL in yards (153.6 ypg) and tied for last in QBR (68.4). The Jets have allowed the league’s fourth-fewest passing yards (185.0 per game). The Jets will have to contend with Miami’s physical rushing attack, which has remained effective despite the loss of starter De’Von Achane in Week 3. Led by Ollie Gordon II’s 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, the Dolphins rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns in their 31-24 home loss to Cincinnati on Oct. 11. On the other side, Miami’s defense has allowed 3.7 yards per carry. That’s the eighth-lowest average in the NFL.

Cleveland Browns (4-2) at Tennessee Titans (1-5)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Browns -1.5; Total: 37.5

Series Rewind: Tennessee snapped a seven-game losing streak last season with a 31-29 road victory over the Browns in Week 14. Tony Pollard rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns to cut Cleveland’s lead in the all-time series to 37-32.

Cleveland, which got a win in Week 2 at Tampa Bay, goes for another road victory as it meets a Titans team coming off its first win. Despite throwing for just 164 yards against Baltimore and being held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season, quarterback Deshaun Watson sparked the Browns to a game-winning drive that set up Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal as time expired. The Browns won 13-10 while playing without running backs Quinshon Judkins (ankle) and Dylan Sampson (knee). The Titans edged the host Indianapolis Colts 26-20 to stop a seven-game losing streak dating to last season. Titans quarterback Cam Ward, the top overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, was 11-for-22 passing for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ward has thrown a pick in four straight games and knows he has been inconsistent, especially when it comes to getting wide receiver Calvin Ridley involved in the offense. He has played 178 snaps this season, but has just five catches on 10 targets. Cleveland shares second in the NFL with 19 sacks, one behind league-leading Detroit. Mason Graham leads the Browns with four sacks but has missed the past two games with knee and ankle injuries.

Indianapolis Colts (2-4) at Minnesota Vikings (5-0)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Vikings -6.5; Total: 41.5

Series Rewind: While Indianapolis holds an 18-9-1 lead in the all-time series, the Vikings have won the last two matchups: 21-13 in 2024 and 39-36 in overtime in 2022. This marks the third straight game of this series contested in Minneapolis.

Minnesota has managed to remain unbeaten despite a host of injuries to offensive starters. The Vikings appear set to be much healthier coming out of their bye week, with left tackle Christian Darrisaw, tight end T.J. Hockenson, wideout Jordan Addison and running back Jordan Mason all returning to full practice participation this week. The Vikings’ defense has been lights-out, allowing nearly four fewer points per game than any other team (12.8 ppg) and ranking second in total defense (259.8 yards per game). That could be enough on its own against a Colts team in flux. After Indianapolis helped AFC South foe Tennessee win its first game of the season last week, longtime general manager Chris Ballard was fired on Monday. Daniel Jones hasn’t carried over the momentum he had in his first season as the team’s starting QB, completing 59.6% of his passes for 1,290 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions in his first six games back from the torn Achilles that ended his promising 2025 season. Indianapolis’ defense ranks 27th in scoring defense (27.3 ppg) and 24th in total defense (351.2 ypg).

Denver Broncos (4-2) at Arizona Cardinals (2-4)

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET

Fan Duel: Broncos -4.5; Total: 43.5

Series Rewind: In their first meeting, these teams played to a 17-17 tie in 1973 when the Cardinals were based in St. Louis. Since then, Denver has won 10 of 11. The only Arizona win was a 43-13 rout in 2010 when John Skelton quarterbacked the Cardinals and Kyle Orton was the signal-caller for Denver. The Broncos have won the last three by a combined 65 points.

The Broncos’ 17-14 overtime victory over the host Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 15 was the latest data point that Denver has been winning in spite of quarterback Bo Nix. Perhaps Nix’s surgically repaired right ankle bothers him more than he lets on, but he has thrown for less than 200 yards in four of Denver’s six games. He accumulated a season-low 107 yards against Seattle four days after passing for just 123 in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Nix is completing just 60.3% of his throws after completing 63.4% last season and 66.3% as a rookie in 2024. The Broncos rank 26th in scoring offense (19.0 ppg) and 31st in total offense (252.2 ypg). Denver linebacker Alex Singleton leads the NFL with 68 tackles. Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain (ankle) looks like he will return after missing the past two games. The Cardinals edged the host Los Angeles Rams 18-16 last weekend to halt a four-game slide. Chad Ryland kicked a career-best six field goals to account for all the Arizona points, including the winning 43-yarder as time expired. Jacoby Brissett has passed for 1,328 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. The Cardinals have allowed an average of 15 points in their two victories, but surrendered 37.0 points per game during their four-game slide. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love (high ankle sprain) will miss his second straight game. Backup Bam Knight fared well last week with 15 carries for 80 yards and will split the workload with Tyler Allgeier, who had 38 yards on 18 carries against the Rams.

Green Bay Packers (4-2) at Detroit Lions (3-2)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Lions -3, Total: 53.5

Series Rewind: The NFC North rivals will face off for the 194th time this weekend with the Packers holding a 106-78-7 advantage. The series has been one-sided of late with the Lions winning six of the last nine, but Green Bay won both games last season to keep Detroit out of the playoffs.

Detroit finally faces its first divisional opponent of the season while playing host to Green Bay. The Lions rank second to the Buffalo Bills in scoring offense (32.8 points per game) game) as they come off a season-high 45 points in their win over Arizona before their Week 6 bye. Detroit QB Jared Goff has been outstanding with 12 touchdown passes and no interceptions. First-year Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing could have something to prove against Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who he worked under the previous three seasons as OC of the Cardinals. Gannon’s defense has rounded into form after a slow start, entering on a three-game winning streak that has seen the Packers allow a combined 34 points. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love (11 TDs, 4 INTs) has been forced to carry the offense due to the team’s inability to run the ball. The Packers rank a distant last in the league at 59.8 rushing yards per game. That tune could change this week, though, with Josh Jacobs (2,258 yards, 28 TDs last two seasons for Green Bay) back at practice this week. He was removed from the NFL commissioner’s exempt list after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges stemming from a May incident.

Los Angeles Rams (2-4) at Las Vegas Raiders (3-3)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

FanDuel: Rams -3.5; Total: 48.5

Series Rewind: The Rams have beaten the Raiders four straight times and six of the last seven. One of the victories during the stretch was a 52-0 beatdown in 2014 when the teams met in St. Louis. There were five meetings when both teams called Los Angeles home — and the Raiders won four of those from 1982-94.

The Raiders have lost three consecutive games, yet they still own more victories than the Rams. That’s not a good endorsement of Los Angeles’ Super Bowl aspirations. Last week’s 18-16 loss to the Cardinals saw the Rams lose without allowing a touchdown – and without notching any sacks. Another painful aspect of the setback was losing receiver Davante Adams (hamstring) for 6-10 weeks. Adams was off to a stellar start with 30 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns. That makes the health of Puka Nucua even more crucial. He has already missed two games this season and he injured a calf muscle in Thursday’s practice. He was listed as “questionable” after missing Friday’s practice and is regarded a game-time decision. Nacua has 37 receptions for 417 yards and one touchdown in just four games. Matthew Stafford, the reigning league MVP, leads the NFL with 1,794 passing yards but only three players have more than his six interceptions. Las Vegas has allowed an average of 36 points over its losing streak, which includes last week’s 33-30 loss to the visiting Buffalo Bills. Kirk Cousins passed for 313 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Bills, but the running game managed just 65 yards on 20 attempts. The Raiders rank 30th in the NFL at 79.2 rushing yards per game and second-year back Ashton Jeanty has 313 rushing yards and a lowly 3.2 average per carry. He finally scored his first rushing TD of the year last week. Wideout Tre Tucker caught two touchdown passes and narrowly missed his second 100-yard outing of the season with 97 yards on five receptions. Raiders cornerback Hezekiah Masses is the only rookie among the six players who share the NFL lead with three interceptions.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) at Seattle Seahawks (3-3)

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Seahawks -2.5; Total: 42.5

Series Rewind: The Seahawks are the reigning champs and the Chiefs have played in five of the past seven Super Bowls, winning three. Kansas City has a 34-19 lead in the series but has not won in Seattle since the 2010 season. Then again, this is just the Chiefs’ second visit since 2010.

Kansas City arrives as the AFC’s last unbeaten team, trying to get to 6-0 for the fourth time in franchise history (2003, 2013 and 2024). Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker, who won Super Bowl LX MVP honors with Seattle last season, leads the NFL with 665 rushing yards. Travis Kelce needs 35 yards to pass Tony Gonzalez (15,413) and set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a tight end, which includes the postseason. Patrick Mahomes is 28-7 against NFC opponents in the regular season. Seahawks wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 717 receiving yards and can become just the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with 100-plus receiving yards in six of his first seven games, joining Adam Thielen (2018), Marvin Harrison (2000) and Michael Irvin (1995). In his last appearance on “Sunday Night Football,” Darnold threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns against Washington in Week 9 last season. A loss would give Seattle its first three-game skid since Weeks 4-6 in head coach Mike Macdonald’s first season in 2024.

Dallas Cowboys (2-4) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-4)

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Cowboys -4.5; Total: 44.5

Series Rewind: This is the 135th meeting of the NFC East rivals, including the playoffs. The Cowboys are 8-5 against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football.” Dallas has dropped its last four games and six of its last seven in Philadelphia.

Quarterback Tanner McKee makes his second straight start for the Eagles with Jalen Hurts set to miss the rest of the season due to deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley returns from a hamstring injury and should boost an offense that ranks 30th in the NFL with just 255.5 yards per game. The Eagles have lost four straight games for the first time since Nick Sirianni became the head coach in 2021. The Philadelphia defense has been giving up a ton of yards but has limited opponents to 13 touchdowns on 24 trips to the red zone. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is 10-5 in his career against the Eagles, has thrown a total of four TD passes in the four games since he threw four in a Week 2 win against Washington. Javonte Williams has a rushing touchdown in four straight games. The Cowboys have turned the ball over five times in the last two games after posting only two turnovers in the first four contests.

Davion Mitchell’s 22 points and 10 assists paced the Heat, who remained winless through three games despite erasing a 23-point deficit to tie the score at 100. Bam Adebayo’s 20 points and eight rebounds gave Miami a lift, Pelle Larsson supplied 15 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson each had 14, and Bobby Portis scored 13.

Donovan Mitchell scored 22 points and Jarrett Allen had 21 points and eight rebounds as Cleveland built a 22-point lead before holding on for a victory over visiting Brooklyn.

Evan Mobley added 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Jaylon Tyson scored 15 points off the bench in the Cavaliers’ home opener. James Harden collected 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as Cleveland picked up its first win.

Brooklyn, which trailed 104-82 with 9:29 remaining, pulled within 123-121 on Michael Porter Jr.’s 3-pointer with 8.1 seconds left. Porter (28 points, nine rebounds) fouled out on the subsequent possession and Sam Merrill hit two free throws to put the Cavaliers up four with 5.2 seconds remaining. Julius Randle had 23 points for winless Brooklyn.

76ers 127, Bucks 116

Joel Embiid recorded his 10th career triple-double and Jaylen Brown scored 27 points on his 30th birthday to lead Philadelphia to a home win over Milwaukee.

Embiid finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the 76ers, who rested LeBron James (back/sciatica). James is expected to play Sunday against the Detroit Pistons, while Embiid will rest in the second half of a back-to-back. Tyrese Maxey pitched in with 26 points, while VJ Edgecombe delivered a 17-point, 13-rebound effort.

While Philadelphia is 3-0 on the young season, the Bucks fell to 0-3 despite eight players scoring in double figures. Jaime Jaquez Jr. led Milwaukee with 21 points, while Kel’el Ware had 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the visitors.

Wizards 124, Bulls 120

Trae Young paired 25 points with nine assists and Kyshawn George added 22 points and nine rebounds as Washington downed host Chicago to open a three-game road trip.

The Wizards outscored the Bulls 40-20 in the third quarter. Anthony Davis and Young combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to hold onto the lead. Davis (19 points) and Tre Johnson (13) also scored in double figures for Washington, while Justin Champagnie had an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double.

Chicago rookie Caleb Wilson contributed 30 points and 14 rebounds for his first career double-double, and teammate Matas Buzelis scored 21 points. Norman Powell added 18, Jalen Smith had 14 and Tre Jones 10. Josh Giddey had nine points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Suns 131, Warriors 122

Devin Booker had 43 points, seven assists and seven rebounds and host Phoenix won to send Golden State to its worst start in almost two decades.

Miles Bridges scored 16 points and Dillon Brooks added 15 points for the Suns, who won their home opener. Booker set a franchise record for points in a home opener.

Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had 26 points and nine rebounds and De’Anthony Melton scored 25 points for the Warriors, who fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2007-08. Golden State was without starters Stephen Curry (knee), Brandin Podziemski (back) and Draymond Green (back) and reserve Al Horford (back).

Spurs 122, Mavericks 106

Victor Wembanyama scored 23 points as visiting San Antonio earned its first win of the season by defeating short-handed Dallas in the second of a back-to-back for both teams.

Dylan Harper added 22 points, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle scored 19 each, Julian Champagnie hit for 12 off the bench and Devin Vassell tallied 11 points for the Spurs. Wembanyama also posted seven rebounds and four blocks.

The Mavericks played without stars Cooper Flagg (shoulder) and Kyrie Irving, who was held out for left knee injury management. Flagg sprained his left shoulder in a win at Indiana on Friday and will be reevaluated next week. Rookie Sergio De Larrea’s 21 points led Dallas. Marcus Sasser, P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford scored 12 apiece.

Rockets 121, Hawks 114

Kevin Durant led seven double-figure scorers with 22 points as Houston topped host Atlanta to improve to 3-0.

The Rockets also got 19 points apiece from Tari Eason and Reed Sheppard, who started in place of Fred VanVleet (right knee load management). Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson each scored 17 points, with Sengun grabbing 10 rebounds and Thompson collecting 11.

The Hawks were led by Jalen Johnson, who fell just shy of a triple-double with 26 points, 16 assists and nine rebounds. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels scored 18 points apiece, and CJ McCollum added 17.

NHL

NHL ROUNDUP: LEAFS ERUPT IN THIRD, ROUT OILERS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

William Nylander scored two of Toronto’s four third-period goals as the visiting Maple Leafs extended their winning streak to four with a 7-2 drubbing of the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Jack Roslovic recorded a goal and an assist, while Auston Matthews, Troy Stecher, Zack MacEwen and Vinni Lettieri also scored and Kirill Marchenko nabbed two assists. For Edmonton, Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard had two helpers each.

Anthony Stolarz stopped 30 shots for his fourth victory as Toronto posted its first four-game win streak since January. Tristan Jarry turned away 25 shots for the Oilers, who had won three in a row.

With his 11th and 12th goals of the season, Draisaitl shares the NHL lead with the Minnesota Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov. Draisaitl is second in the league in scoring with 23 points — 10 shy of McDavid, who has eight goals and a league-leading 25 assists.

Mammoth 5, Lightning 4 (OT)

Dmitri Simashev scored his first NHL goal and also netted the game-winning tally in overtime, lifting Utah past Tampa Bay in Salt Lake City.

Simashev slipped in a pass from Barrett Hayton at 1:44 for his first career game-winner. Utah also received goals from Kailer Yamamoto, Dylan Guenther and Anders Lee. Vincent Trocheck had two assists. Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 29 saves and earned the secondary assist on Simashev’s winner.

Jake Guentzel, Pontus Holmberg, Brayden Point and Conor Geekie hit the net for the Lightning, and Dennis Hildeby made 23 saves. Nikita Kucherov collected an assist for his 1,138th career point, passing Steven Stamkos for the all-time franchise lead.

Blue Jackets 2, Golden Knights 1 (OT)

Adam Fantilli scored a power-play goal 59 seconds into overtime to lead Columbus to a victory over visiting Vegas.

It was Fantilli’s third goal of the season and snapped a 0-for-22 drought on the power play for the Blue Jackets. Denton Mateychuk also scored a goal, Kent Johnson added two assists and Cam Talbot finished with 26 saves.

Tomas Hertl scored for Vegas and Hart stopped 18 of 20 shots for Vegas, which saw its losing streak extended to a season-high three games. The Golden Knights have allowed a power-play goal in five straight games.

Penguins 3, Predators 2 (OT)

Ville Koivunen scored with 1:16 left in overtime for ailing Pittsburgh, which rallied to take down visiting Nashville.

Connor Dewar and Rickard Rakell also scored for the Penguins, who won their second straight game. Arturs Silovs finished with 24 saves, marking the first time the team has won consecutive games since starting the season 2-0.

Steven Stamkos scored his fifth of the season and Jayden Struble notched his first for the Predators, who are 0-4 in overtime and shootouts. Juuse Saros made a season-high 34 saves, but Rakell spoiled his bid for a victory by tying the game with 1:06 remaining in regulation.

Bruins 6, Sharks 4

Boston scored four third-period goals, including three in a row to erase a 3-2 deficit, to edge visiting San Jose and run its unbeaten streak to eight games.

David Pastrnak tied former teammate Patrice Bergeron for third on Boston’s all-time goals list (427) to kick off the late-game surge. Fraser Minten (game-winner), James Hagens and Casey Mittelstadt all had a goal and an assist, while Elias Lindholm and JJ Peterka each dished out two assists, and Jeremy Swayman made 23 saves.

Ducks 5, Flyers 4

Tristan Luneau had a goal and two assists as visiting Anaheim snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over Philadelphia.

Leo Carlsson chipped in with a goal and an assist against the team that signed him to a five-year, $90 million offer sheet over the summer. Anaheim ultimately matched the deal, making the 21-year-old the highest paid player in the league. Beckett Sennecke and A.J. Greer also scored and Lukas Dostal turned aside 28 shots.

Matvei Michkov scored his seventh and eighth goals for Philadelphia, which had won three straight since losing its first nine. Porter Martone had a goal and an assist and Tyson Foerster also scored, while Trevor Zegras recorded two assists against his former team. Joseph Woll finished with 21 saves.

Devils 3, Kings 1

Kaprizov, who is tied for first in goals with the Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl, opened the scoring on a breakaway just 26 seconds into the game. Blake Coleman scored twice, including an empty-netter with 3:36 remaining, while Joel Eriksson Ek added a goal and an assist and Olli Maatta also tallied. Jesper Wallstedt made 23 saves.

Capitals 4, Sabres 3

Alex Tuch scored his second goal of the game at 3:42 of overtime to lift host Washington to victory over Buffalo, his former team.

Tuch, acquired by Washington in a sign-and-trade deal with Buffalo in June, was in the slot to take a pass from Dylan Strome behind the net and beat a screened Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen inside the left post. Strome also scored twice, and Charlie Lindgren made 18 saves for the Capitals.

GOLF

MARIO TIZIANI, HENRIK STENSON SURGE TO TIE ATOP STIFEL LEADERBOARD

Mario Tiziani fired a bogey-free, 8-under-par 63 and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson shot a 7-under 64 on Saturday to share the second-round lead at the Stifel Charity Classic in St. Louis.

Tiziani, competing in his 98th Champions Tour event, and Stenson, a Champions Tour rookie in his eighth event, are both at 9-under 133 entering Sunday, chasing what would be their first career Champions Tour titles.

The pair are both projected to make sizable leaps in the Charles Schwab Cup standings (Tiziani to 13th and Stenson to 16th) should either finish off the victory. Stenson entered the event two spots outside the top 54 who will advance to next week’s Simmons Bank Championship.

Tiziani, 56, surged from a tie for 31st with a bogey-free, 8-under 63 at Norwood Hills Country Club, setting a tournament record for the second round. He birdied three holes on the front nine and five more on the back nine, including Nos. 15, 16 and 18.

“I had a couple of key up-and-downs honestly that kept the round going, two of them that I can think of,” Tiziani said after his round. “I hit a number of good shots, some were really close. Yeah, it was just a good day, I kind of did everything well. I wouldn’t say it was unbelievable, but I had a lot of chances and I hit some close ones, too.”

Stenson, 50, began the day at 2 under before delivering a 7-under round, pairing eight birdies with one bogey. He followed up the one error on No. 4 with three birdies on the following four holes.

“I still feel like I leave some shots on the short game and the swing is not really where I want it to be at times, but it’s still good enough to hit a lot of good shots and keep it in play for the most part and don’t put myself in too much trouble,” said Stenson, a six-time PGA Tour winner who captured The Open Championship in 2016. “I feel like I’ve just been committing to my processes, and I’ve got no stress, I’ve got no pressure really on anything, so I just want to try and improve and get back closer to where I know I can be.”

Shane Bertsch (66) and Scott Parel (66) are tied for third, one stroke back at 8 under. New Zealand’s Steven Alker (67), Australia’s Mark Hensby (70) and Round 1 leader Darren Clarke (71) of Northern Ireland are tied for fifth at 7 under.

The 32-year-old Californian, who captured his first PGA Tour title earlier this month at the Bank of Utah Championship, shot a 5-under-par 66 at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, to tie Ireland’s Seamus Power at 16-under 197.

Smotherman matched his 66 from Friday, while Power followed up his rounds of 66 and 64 with a 4-under 67 at the Port Royal Golf Course.

Taylor Moore and Canadians Corey Conners and Ben Silverman were two shots off the lead at 14 under, while five Americans — Tom Hoge, Chris Kirk, Chan Kim, Danny Walker and Chandler Blanchet — were three strokes off the pace set by Smotherman and Power.

Kim carded the day’s best round with a 7-under 64 and vaulted 27 places up the leaderboard.

Smotherman birdied Nos. 1, 3 and 5 before coming to the par-5 seventh hole. He laced his drive 351 yards down the right side of the fairway, hit a 9-iron approach within a few feet of a front left hole location and sank the putt for eagle.

“The par-5 7, that tee ball’s pretty fun downwind, trying to just ship it over that middle last bunker, stay fairway and a little pulled 9-iron right on the flag,” said Smotherman. “I thought it was going to be good, I didn’t think it’d be that close, but that was a second shot we’re just trying to hit middle of the green and just got lucky I pulled it.”

The California native produced two birdies and two bogeys over his final 11 holes.

Like Smotherman, Power got off to a solid start, birdieing the 1st and 3rd holes. He birdied the short (491 yards) par-5 17th to tie for the lead.

Sunday’s final round could be disrupted by worsening conditions, with strong winds and afternoon rain in the forecast.

Power knows it will be a challenge, but he is not shying away from it.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t get too, too bad where we can’t play, but if it does blow, I feel like the officials know it’s coming so they’ve been slowing down the greens,” said Power. “I saw some of the pins for tomorrow so I think it will be playable. It’s one of those days I think it’s going to be tough, and I’ve played this course in some wind before and been able to manage so I kind of have that to lean on a little bit.”

After his win in Utah, Smotherman debated whether to play in Bermuda or take some time off, but ultimately decided to make the trip.

“It’s a week I look forward to, so to come play the way we are is pretty nice,” said Smotherman. “I haven’t grinded overly hard this past week. A couple solid days with my coach and then got here, just enjoying the island conditions and go play a practice round, play a pro-am and go and here we are.”

HAERAN RYU IN CONTROL AT BMW LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Haeran Ryu doubled her lead to four strokes with a 4-under 68 on Saturday in a windy and rainy third round of the BMW Ladies Championship in her home country.

This season’s double-major winner moved to 17-under 199 with birdies on her last three holes at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam-gun, South Korea. Ryu’s lone bogey at the par-3 15th hole was her first of the tournament.

“Today such a long day. We play over six hours,” said Ryu, who began the day with a two-shot lead. “So a little tired right now. But I just try to be more accurate with my shot because it’s a little windy out there and there’s a lot of rain today. So I got more distance. So more longer clubs, so I just want it more straighter. It works.”

Ryu, 25, is looking for her sixth title on the LPGA Tour. She won her first two majors this season at the Women’s PGA Championship and the Evian Championship.

Ryu’s compatriots Minji Park (65 on Saturday) and Hye Jin Choi (66) are tied for second place with Japan’s Yuri Yoshida (68) at 13-under. South Korea’s Minju Kim (69) and Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez (70) share fifth place at 12-under.

Choi climbed into contention by playing the front nine in 8-under 28, carding six birdies and an eagle at the par-5 sixth hole. She ran into trouble on the back nine, including a double bogey at No. 17.

“I had a really good score on the front nine,” Choi said. “I felt good about my ball-striking early on, so I was able to play confidently and make a lot of birdie putts.”

Park navigated the tough conditions with seven birdies in a bogey-free round, including three straight birdies to finish the day.

“Today, I kept trying to adjust my game and manage the course according to the conditions which really paid off,” Park said.

Four players are tied for seventh place at 11-under: South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim (67) and Minsun7 Kim (72), Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen (66) and American Lauren Coughlin (72).

Defending champion Sei Young Kim of South Korea plummeted 39 spots into a tie for 62nd place with a round of 77 that included three double bogeys, two bogeys, one birdie and an eagle at the par-5 17th.

This is the second of four events on the fall Asian swing, followed by tournaments in Malaysia and Japan.

CHASE BRISCOE WINS POLE FOR CUP CHASE RACE AT TALLADEGA

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Joe Gibbs Racing’s Chase Briscoe will start from the same position he finished last year’s Talladega Superspeedway Fall classic — in front.

The 31-year-old driver of the No. 19 JGR Toyota earned the pole position for Sunday’s YellaWood 500 (2 p.m. ET, NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) with a fast lap of 186.065 mph around the famed 2.66-mile high banks during Saturday time trials. The mark is the fastest NASCAR Cup Series pole speed at the track — by a significant 3-mph — since 2021.

It is the first pole of 2026 for Briscoe and comes at a crucial point in the season for the Indiana native who sits third in the championship standings, only 24 points behind leader Kyle Larson with three races remaining to decide the season trophy.

Briscoe was next to last to take the track among the 10 second-round qualifiers — and he ultimately bested Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill’s No. 33 Chevrolet by a slight .032-second.

“Obviously have a great starting spot tomorrow for our Toyota, but who knows what to expect with the handling and obviously that first run is all about fuel saving, so we’ll probably have our blinker on pretty early to not have the lead, but we’ll see how it plays out,” said Briscoe, who has three victories this season including two of the last three races coming to Talladega (at Las Vegas and Charlotte).”

It’s Briscoe’s fourth straight top-four starting position and claiming pole position this weekend is particularly important for morale on his team.

“Definitely from a pride standpoint there’s a lot that goes into just all the little tiny details that add up,” said Briscoe, who earned seven poles last year and now has 10 in his career. “Stack enough of those together and just the pride that comes from that from the guys goes a long way, the confidence.”

Trackhouse Racing teammates Connor Zilisch and Shane Van Gisbergen will share the second row — third and fourth fastest in time trials. Championship-eligible drivers, Roush Fenway Keselowski’s Chris Buescher and JGR’s Christopher Bell will start fifth and sixth.

Hendrick’s Alex Bowman, and Chase drivers, JGR teammates Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin and Larson rounded out the top 10.

There have been 12 different race winners in the last 12 Talladega races. Hamlin is the last polesitter to win the race — doing so in October 2020. Since 2008, the pole winner has gone on to win in the NASCAR Cup Series at the track only twice.

He previously participated in the New England Patriots’ 2026 offseason program and training camp. Harris was originally signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 8, 2026. Collegiately, he played in 59 career games (29 starts) at Oklahoma State (2023-25) and Arkansas State (2020-22) and compiled 113 tackles (92 solo), 61.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, 28 passes defensed and three interceptions.

Pratt, 6-3, 250 pounds, was signed to the team’s practice squad on October 13, 2026. He has started 104-of-112 career games in his time with the Colts (2025-26), Las Vegas Raiders (2025) and Cincinnati Bengals (2019-24) and has totaled 734 tackles (416 solo), 38.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 33 passes defensed, eight interceptions, eight forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and eight special teams stops. PACERS

The Pacers take their 1-1 season record to Brooklyn on Sunday where they face-off with Julius Randle and the Nets. Indiana will look to bounce back after a lopsided first half spoiled their home opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

After allowing 66 first half points to New Orleans in their season opener, the Pacers allowed 77 points in Friday’s first half against the Mavericks.

“It just simply comes down to an attitude and a disposition,” coach Rick Carlisle said after Friday’s loss. “And two straight games we haven’t had it the way we need to have it in the first half…It’s not okay, and we all we all own it. Every single one of us. Start with me. I didn’t have these guys ready to play the way they needed to be ready to play.”

Despite the slow start, Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 23 points. Tyrese Haliburton notched 18 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in his return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and Ivica Zubac had nine points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Indiana will look to push in transition against the Nets. The Pacers scored just 10 fast break points against the Mavericks – partly due to Dallas’ 50 percent shooting night – and will aim to get back into a groove pace-wise in Brooklyn.

The Nets will host the Pacers on the second night of a back to back. Brooklyn plays the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Saturday, and will return to Barclays Center to clash with the Pacers on Sunday.

Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. lead the Nets offense, and combined to score 59 points in their season opener against the Charlotte Hornets. They bring size and versatility to the forward positions as the Nets continue to retool their roster.

Brooklyn finished the 2025-26 season with a 20-62 record, and traded center Nic Claxton for Randle in the offseason. Porter and Randle are Brooklyn’s go-to players while the Nets develop younger players like Egor Demin, Day’Ron Sharpe, and Noah Clowney, who have all shown flashes of potential.

Probable Starters

Pacers: G – Tyrese Haliburton, G – Andrew Nembhard, F – Jarace Walker, F – Pascal Siakam, C – Ivica Zubac

Nets: G – Egor Demin, G – Keon Ellis, F – Michael Porter Jr., F – Julius Randle, C – Day’Ron Sharpe

Injury Report

Pacers: Johnny Furphy – out (right ACL repair/surgery), T.J. McConnell – out (right hamstring strain), Ben Sheppard – out (left meniscus tear)

Nets: Tyler Bilodeau – out (right shoulder sprain)

Last Meeting

Apr. 9, 2026: Seven Pacers scored in double figures as Indiana snapped a three-game slide with a win over the Nets, 123-94.

Obi Toppin led the way for Indiana as he scored 26 points along with nine rebounds. Micah Potter, Jalen Slawson, Ethan Thompson, Jarace Walker, Quenton Jackson, and Jay Huff joined Toppin as double-digit scorers.

Brooklyn had six double figure scorers itself. E.J. Lidell led the way for the Nets as he notched 26 points and 10 rebounds, but Brooklyn struggled with the Pacers’ offensive efficiency. Indiana got off to a hot start as it outscored the Nets 31-14 in the first quarter, then took a 63-47 advantage into halftime. The Blue and Gold never looked back.

The Pacers were 52 percent from the field, but shot just 26 percent from deep. They didn’t need much from beyond the arc, however, as they outscored the Nets in the paint, 80-56.

The win in Brooklyn marked Indiana’s final win of the season.

Noteworthy

Both the Pacers and Nets will wear their Classic uniforms for Sunday’s game – a special edition dedicated to their ABA histories.

The Pacers are 117-85 against the Nets all-time.

The Pacers and Nets will play four times this season. The first time the Nets visit Gainbridge Fieldhouse is on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Ben Sheppard will “miss some time” per coach Rick Carlisle. The fourth-year guard sustained a meniscus tear in his left knee in Indiana’s season opener against the Pelicans.

FUEL

FORT WAYNE- The Indy Fuel faced off with the Fort Wayne Komets on Saturday night, in between two home games. After a four-goal second period for the Fuel, the Komets could not come back. Indy won 6-2 over the Komets in Fort Wayne.

1ST PERIOD

The Fuel hit the game sheet first when they took a too many men penalty at 3:43. Cody Laskosky served it but Indy killed it off regardless.

The game’s next penalty went to the Komets as Cole Hults sat for slashing at 6:21. Fort Wayne killed it off.

At 12:32, Chase Dafoe took a penalty for holding while Fort Wayne’s Jack Matier went alongside him for embellishment. One minute and one second later, Laskosky joined Dafoe in Indy’s penalty box when he served the team’s second too many men penalty.

Despite being shorthanded, Anthony Petruzzelli scored for Indy against his longtime former team. With the help of Dafoe, he put the Fuel up 1-0 at 14:39.

At 18:00 exactly, Tommy Budnick and Fort Wayne’s Jack Gorniak took offsetting slashing penalties that were killed off as time expired on the period.

After one, the Fuel were outshooting the Komets, 13-12.

2ND PERIOD

At 2:51, Indy earned a power play chance when John Gormley was sent to the penalty box for cross checking. That penalty was killed off.

Dustin Manz added to the Fuel’s lead with a goal assisted by Kyle Aucoin and Mike Brown at 5:59.

21 seconds later, the Fuel went back on the penalty kill after Lachlan Getz took a holding penalty.

Hults cut Fort Wayne’s lead in half when he scored for the Komets at 11:11. Exactly 40 seconds later, Manz scored his second of the game for Indy to put them back up by two.

At 14:09, Getz went back to the box for a roughing minor along with Alex Aleardi, the Fort Wayne captain. Aleardi was given a double minor, however.

Laskosky scored on the power play with the help of Mitchell Hoelscher and Budnick at 15:14. In the same second, Brady Stonehouse took a cross checking penalty to continue the power play for the Fuel.

At 17:57, a fight broke out that landed Jadon Joseph and Fort Wayne’s Arnaud Durandeau with ten minute misconduct penalties for continuing an altercation. The Fuel got two minutes on the power play though, due to Drake Rymsha also taking a cross checking minor.

Laskosky capitalized on the power play with his second consecutive goal at 19:48. Matt Petgrave and Mitchell Hoelscher claimed the assists.

Indy went to the locker room up 5-1, outshooting the Komets, 24-20.

3RD PERIOD

Indy went up 6-1 when Hoelscher scored at 1:57. Aucoin and Laskosky claimed the assists.

At 6:50, Jesse Tucker was sent to the box for slashing. After that was killed off, Getz returned to the penalty box at 12:25 for holding. Less than twenty seconds later, Jonny Tychonick was sent to the box for boarding.

Rymsha joined Tychonick in Fort Wayne’s penalty box at 13:49 when he took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Indy’s Kyler Kupka took an interference call at 14:10. Just 13 seconds later, Hunter Johannes scored for the Komets to make the score 6-2.

At 16:42, Getz and Tychonick exchanged ten minute misconduct penalties for continuing an altercation while Fort Wayne’s Nathan Dunkley was given a two-minute minor penalty for goaltender interference. This put the Fuel on the power play again.

They did not score again but neither did the Komets before time expired and Indy claimed the 6-2 victory. They outshot Fort Wayne, 33-29 through three.

ELEVEN

Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Indy Eleven fought valiantly with a strategic attack at USL Championship Eastern Conference runner-up Charleston Battery, but the Boys in Blue had their playoff hopes end with a 1-0 setback.

Indy Eleven had 1.48 expected goals in the match with 13 shots, including 11 inside the box.

In the 31st minute, captain Aodhan Quinn started a good scoring chance with a free kick from near midfield.  At the edge of the 18 with his back to the goal, defender Makel Rasheed flipped the ball up to head it inside the area to Nabi Kibunguchy, who created space and fired a shot low and hard toward the far post, but Charleston keeper Luis Zamudio punched it away.

In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Kibunguchy intercepted a pass and played it forward to Bruno Rendon, who made a long run and fired a hard shot that Zamudio stopped.  The rebound came back to Rendon, who played it across to Quinn, but his shot was also saved.

The Boys in Blue had nine shots in the first half, including three on target, with 0.81 expected goals in the opening 45 minutes.

In the 56th minute, Joe Hafferty played a long cross into the corner of the six that Zamudio tried to punch out, but it deflected to Paco Craig, with his left-footed shot cleared off the line by Joey Akpunonu.

Indy Eleven had another scoring chance in the 64th minute off a Reice Charles-Cook goal kick.  Rendon won an aerial duel to head it to Hafferty who played it quickly to Josh O’Brien.  He chipped it to the left side back to Rendon for a shot from outside the six.

15-year-old Tyler Lowden became the youngest player in Boys in Blue franchise history to play in a USL-C match six days ahead of his 16th birthday.

INDIANA FOOTBALL

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Banged-up quarterback Josh Hoover dug deep. So did the Indiana Hoosiers. There was no choice with history against the No. 6/6 Hoosiers at Michigan Stadium, with the offense struggling and pressure growing on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon.

Then, when it mattered most, in overtime with a crowd of 111,000 roaring, Hoover completed a 21-yard pass to seldom-used tight end Brock Schott and then ran 4 yards for the winning touchdown, sacrificing his beat-up body in the process.

“This was one of the hardest games of my life,” defensive tackle Mario Landino told Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer during a post-game radio interview, “and one of the most fun games of my life.”

Or, as head coach Curt Cignetti put it to Fischer, “Even in the bleakest moments, we found a way.”

IU (7-1 overall, 4-1 in the Big Ten) bounced back from the previous week’s Ohio State loss to win at Michigan Stadium for the first time since 1967.

“We knew what the challenge was,” Landino told Fischer, “and we had to meet it head on. The defensive buckled down and the offense did what it had to do.”

Yes, IU’s offense managed just 13 points and 212 yards, in part because Hoover wasn’t at his physical best after getting rocked against Ohio State. He was just 8-for-18 for 81 yards that included his first interception of the season. At one point, IU coaches considering going with back-up quarterback Grant Wilson.

“We knew Josh was going to play,” Cignetti told Fischer during another post-game radio interview, “but he wasn’t 100 percent all week.”

The defense refused to let it matter.

Huge sacks by linebacker Rolijah Hardy (minus-14 yards) and defensive lineman Tobi Osunsanmi (minus-13), and a pass deflection by cornerback A.J. Harris helped force Michigan (4-3, 1-3) punts. Then there was safety Amare Ferrell’s interception and linebacker Isaiah Jones’ fumble recovery, which led to a pair of Nico Radicic field goals.

In all, the Hoosiers had four sacks and 10 tackles for loss, and they held the Wolverines to 224 total yards. Hardy totaled nine tackles and two sacks. Osunsanmi had the other two sacks. Harris had two pass breakups.

“The defense kept us in it,” Cignetti told Fischer. “They kept stopping them and giving us opportunities and finally the offense chipped in a little bit.”

With Hoover limited (he only threw one second-half pass, an interception), IU went offensively conservative with its 6-0 halftime lead.

“I felt like if we didn’t screw it up on offense once we got the 6-0 lead,” Cignetti told Fischer, “that Michigan couldn’t beat us. But we almost screwed it up. You can only give a team so many opportunities before they’re going to get it down there.”

In the second half, IU went to its running game, which managed 131 hard-earned runs in 35 carries against one of the nation’s best run defenses. Turbo Richard had 68 yards on 19 carries. Lee Beebe Jr. had 56 on 12 carries.

“One thing about this group,” Cignetti told Fischer, “is that they’re tested and have been in moments like this before, and they respond.”

Michigan had turned to true freshman Tommy Carr at quarterback over the more heralded Bryce Underwood. The Hoosiers went after him. Could they shut down the Michigan run and force Carr to throw for Wolverine success?

In the first half, that meant one Carr fumble, one Carr interception and zero Michigan points. Carr finished 20-for-32 for 167 yards and that interception.

“We knew with a freshman quarterback,” Landino told Fischer, “they wanted to run the ball. We needed to stop the run and get to the pass, and that’s what we were able to do.”

IU set an instant defensive tone, holding Michigan to two punts, one fumble, and 42 first-quarter total yards.

The Hoosiers needed a couple of possessions to settle in. Two offensive penalties and a dropped pass helped end its first two drives with punts.

Jones recovered a Carr fumble on the Michigan 28-yard line that led to Radicic’s 22-yard field goal and a 3-0 first-quarter lead.

Ferrell’s third interception in three games — off a Harris pass deflection — gave the Hoosiers the ball on the Wolverine 21-yard line. The result – a 34-yard Radicic field goal and a 6-0 second-quarter lead.

Near the end of the first half, Michigan got into scoring range. Hardy’s 14-yard sack of Carr resulted in Michigan’s missed 53-yard field goal. IU’s Paddy McAteer’s 56-yard field goal attempt also missed for the 6-0 halftime score. Five penalties helped limit the Hoosiers to 138 total yards.

In the third quarter, Osunsanmi’s huge 13-yard sack of Carr forced the Wolverines into a 32-yard field goal attempt, which they missed. The 6-0 score remained.

Hoover’s first interception of the season resulted in a 29-yard Michigan field goal and a 6-3 late third-quarter score.

The Hoosiers turned to its running game, but it wasn’t enough.  Michigan drove to within yards of a winning touchdown before another Hardy sack forced the Wolverines into a tying 26-yard field goal as time expired to send the game into overtime.

In the first extra possession, Hoover hit Schott with that 21-yard completion to set up his 4-yard TD run and a 13-6 lead. The defense held for the victory.

“It was a great call by (offensive coordinator) Mike Shanahan to run Josh,” Cignetti told Fischer. “I know they weren’t looking for that.”

“There was no pressure,” Landino told Fischer. “We knew we had to do our jobs.”

Next up — Saturday’s home game against Minnesota before the Hoosiers get a much-needed bye after playing for nine-straight weeks.

“The bye week looks good,” Landino told Fischer, “but there’s an opponent in the road. We have to do our jobs again next week. We’ve got to keep it going to be that championship-level squad.”

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 17 Notre Dame (7-1-6, 5-1-1) upset the No. 15 Florida State Seminoles (7-2-3, 3-1-2) on the road in a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. This would be the first loss that Florida State suffered at home this year and would be just the second time this season that the Seminoles were shutout.

Who other than 2025 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Izzy Engle, to lead the Irish with two goals in the win over the 15th-ranked Seminoles. Engle would record six of Notre Dame’s eight shots of the night with the other two shots registered by junior Ellie Hodsden.

The junior forward’s brace now gives her a team-best seven goals so far this season, as Engle now ranks amongst the top ten in the ACC in goals scored this year. She was assisted by fellow juniors Lily Joseph and Grace Restovich.

Junior goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica finished the night with three saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season and 16th career shutout in the 2-0 win.

Notre Dame scored on their first shot of the night as the Irish were on the board in the 15th minute in Tallahassee. The Irish claimed the early 1-0 lead as the touch from Joseph found the feet of Engle attacking into the right side of the box. Her right-footed strike to the near post would find the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Engle had another look in the 21st minute as her left-footed strike attacking from the left side of the box would land just high of the goal.

The Irish not only held the Seminoles scoreless, but kept them from registering a single shot in the first 45 minutes of play. Notre Dame outshot Florida State 5-0 with Engle recording four of Notre Dame’s five first-half shots.

Just 47 seconds into the half, Engle would do it again as her quick touch to the near post would roll past the diving Seminoles goalkeeper and into the back of the net for a brace. Her goal in the 46th minute would extend the Irish lead to 2-0.

The Seminoles followed shortly after with their first shot of the night, but it resulted in a save from Kasica.

Notre Dame’s next look on frame would come from Hodsden in the 67th minute, who fired it from the top of the box, but resulted in a stop from the Seminoles goalkeeper.

Florida State remained aggressive as they were looking to cut the two-goal deficit. Despite the Seminoles outshooting the Irish 6-3 in the second half, Florida State was unable to find the back of the net.

The Irish would continue to battle to keep the Seminoles off the board and in a successful effort, they closed it out to secure the 2-0 victory on the road.

UP NEXT

The Irish will head to the west coast as they take on Cal on Thursday, Oct. 29 and No. 7 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 1.

NOTRE DAME HOCKEY

SOUTH BEND, Ind. –  Notre Dame dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 20/18 Merrimack on Saturday inside Compton Ice Arena.

The three Notre Dame goals came from Carter Slaggert, Brennan Ali and Danny Nelson.

The story of the game was the second period, as the Warriors outscored the Irish 3-0 over the 20 minutes of play, all coming on power-play goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish couldn’t have asked for a better start to Saturday’s matchup, scoring within the first three minutes to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Leo Gruba intercepted the puck just inside the offensive zone and found Slaggert who carried to the top of the left circle before firing in his first of the season.

Notre Dame wasn’t done scoring in the opening period, as it doubled its lead at the 10:12 mark off a beautifully worked team goal. Danny Nelson centered a pass to Fischer, who drew a defender and the goaltender before sliding a pass across the crease to Ali, who found the back of the net for his first of the season to make it 2-0.

The Irish couldn’t capitalize on a golden opportunity to start the second period, as they were unable to convert on a 5-minute major penalty.

The Warriors managed to pull one back off a power play of their own, scoring on a redirect in front of the crease to cut the Irish lead in half at 2-1 at the 13:05 mark of the period.

With five minutes left in the period the Irish were whistled for both a five-minute major and a two-minute minor, giving the visitors a 5-on-3. Merrimack capitalized with two goals over the final five minutes of the period to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Less than nine minutes into the third, the Irish found the equalizer courtesy of a Danny Nelson goal. Fischer fired a shot from the point that went wide and Nelson shot the rebound off the board off the goalie and into the net to tie the game at 3-3.

Unfortunately for the Irish the Warriors reclaimed the lead less than two minutes later, as the Irish goalie was screened on a shot from the point to put the visitors back on top at 4-3 with 10 minutes left in the third.

Merrimack added a fifth on a breakaway goal with less than three minutes left in the game before scoring an empty netter in the final minute of play to make the final score 6-3.

UP NEXT

The Irish open up Big Ten play on the road in Madison, Wisconsin, next weekend, taking on Wisconsin at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 30 and then at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 31. The games will be streamed on B1G+.

The home side was able to find the endzone once again as Butler trailed 14-3 with four minutes left in the first quarter. Butler answered on its next drive with a two-yard touchdown from Snyder as BU cut the deficit to four (14-10) heading into the second.

Drake opened the second quarter with a quick drive that was halted by the Butler defense. BU then put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive that was fueled by a 31-yard completion on a halfback toss from Dellumo to Goralski. Dellumo finished the drive off for BU, scampering into the endzone for a two-yard rushing touchdown. Drake was able to find the endzone one more time before the half as the home side took the 21-17 lead into the break.

Both sides traded possessions to start the third quarter. Butler faced a 2nd and 20 after a Drake sack, when Passini rattled off a 37-yard rush up the middle, giving BU the ball in Drake territory. Butler was able to drive into the red zone, but Drake was able to come up with an interception in the endzone, halting the Bulldogs’ momentum. The Butler defense responded on the next drive as Nawrocki recorded a strip sack that Gardner Jr. was able to jump on top of deep in Drake territory. BU was unable to find the endzone with the short field, but Janki converted on his second field goal of the day as Butler narrowly trailed 21-10.

Drake started the fourth quarter driving down the field. The Butler defense was able to come up with a huge stop on fourth and one giving the offense the ball at the Drake 35. BU was able to capitalize on the turnover on downs as Jackson found the endzone for his seventh touchdown of the season. On Drake’s ensuing drive, the quarterback rolled to his right and made a throw on the run, but Kelly jumped the pass and returned it to the Drake two-yard line. The Bulldog offense capitalized on the turnover with a two-yard rushing touchdown from Passini as the BU lead grew to 12 (33-21). Butler was able to fend off Drake’s comeback efforts as BU secured the 33-21 victory at the final whistle.

Our program is getting better,  but performing better in these matches is a must. I was thrilled with the effort we got from Ellery Rees on the right and happy to see Chase Lemming battle back in the third set after a few tough sets, but we’ve got to come out cleaner and more aggressive tomorrow.”

NOT TO BE ‘IG-NORED’

• Butler assistant coach Jon Diebler scored 1,536 career points at Ohio State (2007-11), playing for Matta. His 374 career three-pointers are second in Big Ten history (Jon is too humble to mention this, but Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon utilized five full seasons — and part of a sixth — to break his record).

• Jon’s brother, Jake, is currently the head coach at Ohio State.

• Butler and Ohio State last played as part of the PK80 event in 2017 with the Bulldogs taking a 67-66 win in overtime, erasing a 15-point deficit over the final 3:46 of regulation. Kelan Martin led the Bulldogs with 24 points. Chris Holtmann, who had led Butler to the 2017 Sweet 16, was in his first season as the head coach at Ohio State.

• The last time Butler and Ohio State played on campus was Dec. 12, 2009 at Hinkle Fieldhouse with the Bulldogs taking a 74-66 win. Current Butler head coach Ronald Nored had eight points in the contest for the Bulldogs, one better than Diebler’s seven-point game for the Buckeyes. The Bulldogs would make the first of back-to-back runs to the national championship game later that season; Ohio State was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament in a 29-8 season that ended in the Sweet 16.

• Butler enters Sunday’s exhibition off an 81-74 win over Indiana State, which is coached by Butler alum Matthew Graves.

• The Bulldogs held a 46-20 advantage in points in the paint and out-rebounded the visiting Sycamores, 44-29.

• Jalen Jackson led Butler with 19 points and seven assists in the exhibition win over Indiana State; he has led the Bulldogs in scoring in both of the team’s exhibitions.

• Jackson left the game in the final minutes due to a left leg injury. He is considered day-to-day and is questionable for the Ohio State exhibition.

• Samu Adler has been fully cleared for all practice activities after dealing with a broken finger on his left hand. He did not play in Butler’s first two exhibitions and is questionable for the Ohio State match-up.

• In Butler’s first exhibition Oct. 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse, visiting Indiana pulled away in the second half, taking a 96-68 exhibition win over the Bulldogs.

• A decisive 24-3 run midway through the second half turned a 54-53 game into a 78-56 Indiana lead with 7:29 remaining in the contest.

• No Butler starter played after the 8:30 mark of the second half.

• Jackson led Butler with 17 points and Jordan Ellerbee added 16 points for the Bulldogs against Indiana.

• Nored was hired in March at his alma mater after spending the last decade on NBA coaching staffs.

• Butler’s roster has four players from Indiana, five players from five other states, and a total of six international players from five different countries.

• The Bulldogs return five players from last season’s roster, headlined by Drayton Jones and Jackson.

• Butler’s 10 newcomers include five NCAA transfers, three international players who have yet to play NCAA basketball, and two domestic freshmen.

• Butler’s non-conference regular season schedule includes five power conference opponents: on the road at North Carolina and Boise State, on a neutral court against Nebraska and Georgia Tech, and at home against Pittsburgh.

• Butler’s regular season schedule currently includes 10 games against teams in the AP Top 25 or receiving votes in the poll (in addition to exhibition opponents Ohio State and Indiana, who are both receiving votes)

• Butler is 88-6 in their last 94 home games against non-conference teams.

• Butler will play 20 BIG EAST games, facing all 10 conference opponents both at Hinkle Fieldhouse and on the road.

• Jones was one of two Bulldogs to start all 32 games during the 2025-26 season. He led the team by shooting 59 percent from the field last season.

• Jackson led the Bulldogs to a 5-1 start in 2025-26 before his season was ended due to surgery on his left ankle.

• Asim Djulovic starred for Mega Superbet in the AdmiralBet ABA and KLS leagues in his native Serbia. He averaged 12.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

• Adler led his Salon Vilpas team to the Korisliiga league title in his native Finland, earning Player of the Year honors while also being named Finals MVP. He averaged 16.3 points per game during the season.

• Adler played on the Finland National Team in both Feb./March and July, 2026 in qualifying rounds for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.

• Three of the team’s incoming transfers averaged double figures last season: Treyson Anderson at North Dakota State, Jordan Ellerbee at Florida Gulf Coast, and Christian Moore at The Citadel; the other two transfers arrive from power conference programs: Eduardo Klafke (Ole Miss) and Samis Calderon (Kansas).

• Anderson shot 36 percent from three-point range and was third in the Summit League in blocked shots during the 2025-26 campaign at NDSU.

• Ellerbee set the freshman season scoring record at FGCU (446 points), which included a 42-point game against Kennesaw State Nov. 26, 2025.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will open the 2026-27 regular season at home, hosting Lafayette Monday, Nov. 2 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. That tip is part of a three-game week that also includes a home game against FDU Wednesday, Nov. 4 and a road contest at Boise State Sunday, Nov. 8.

IU INDY VOLLEYBALL

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The IU Indianapolis volleyball team snapped its three-game skid on Saturday (Oct. 24) with an impressive road reverse sweep at Green Bay to win 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-10). Freshman Bailey Sinish finished with 21 kills and sophomore Jillian Tippmann chimed in with 18.

Senior setter Grace Purichia delivered 52 assists and 13 digs while sophomore Laura Roeder finished with 30 digs from her libero spot.

Green Bay (14-7, 7-3 HL) hit .302 for the match, but cooled as the day went on while the Jaguars warmed up over the final three sets to finish at .261 for the day.

The first set saw Green Bay go wire-to-wire, building a quick 9-3 lead and staving off the Jaguars late. IU Indy cut the lead back to two on multiple occasions, only to see the Phoenix escape with a 25-22 victory. Kayla Birmingham led Green Bay with four kills in the opening set while Sinish had five in set one for the Jags.

The Jags led the bulk of the second set before finally succumbing the advantage at 17-16  after Green Bay scored three straight. The stanza was tied at 19, 20 and 21 all before back-to-back Alexa Hernandez kills gave the hosts the lead for good on way to a 25-23 victory. Sinish put down six kills in the second set while Kirsten Fish had five for Green Bay.

The Jaguars dominated the third set, coasting to a 20-11 lead that allowed them to digest a late 5-0 Green Bay run that cut the advantage back to 22-17. Senior Ninah Miranda helped seal the set and finished with a team-high four kills while sophomore Amanda Stephens stepped up with a pair of critical kills.

Sinish and Tippmann helped control the fourth set, which was nip-and-tuck throughout. IU Indy led by three early and three late, marking the largest margins of the set. Tippmann provided a key kill at 23-22 to get the Jaguars to set point and Stephens followed with the punctuation mark to send the match to a fifth set. Sinish and Tippmann had six kills apiece and neither made an error, combining to hit .480 for the set.

Green Bay seized an early lead in the fifth set at 5-2, but essentially got stuck on six as the Jaguars went in front 7-6. Tippmann had an attack go just wide of the line at 8-8, leading to an unsuccessful challenge. On the next point, an angry Tippmann rifled home a kill, sparking a 4-0 run with Elle Patterson on the service line. The Jags put the set away with Lauren White on the service line, thanks to kills from Sinish and Chloe Macias.

Miranda finished with 10 kills and Macias added eight.

The Jaguars will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 29 when they host Northern Kentucky inside James T. Morris Arena at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

IU INDY MEN’S SOCCER

GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The IU Indianapolis men’s soccer team fell on the road at Green Bay on Saturday (Oct. 24) by a 2-1 score. Relegated to spoiler duty at this point, the Jaguars fell short in trying to hinder host Green Bay’s postseason chances.

The Phoenix (4-7-4, 3-3-3 HL) scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot in the 18th minute and got the game-winner on a Noah Lechelt free kick in the 66th minute. The IU Indy (3-8-3, 0-6-2 HL) offense came from a Jayden Quezada strike in the 31st minute off a Cobe Hamler assist.

“Today is another really good performance from the boys,” head coach Keegan Boom said. “We have hit the posts multiple times and are very close to getting a positive result. We are learning tough lessons in every game, but the group remains optimistic with the ability we continue to show.

“Next up is a good Wright State side that we will be excited to play against.”

Green Bay came out firing, putting the Jaguars under immediate duress, piling up four shots on goal and five corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes. However, the hosts didn’t get on the board until they were awarded a PK in the 18th minute, leading to an Oscar Arroyo conversion.

The Jaguars countered in the 31st minute on a build up the right side of the field leading into service into Green Bay territory. The ball came out beyond the 18-yard box, where Quezada angled a brilliant ball just inside the far post for his first tally of the season.

Things stayed level until the 66th minute when Lechelt hit a fantastic restart past Peter Field for his fifth score of the year. Green Bay was awarded a free kick just beyond the 18-yard box and the Green Bay striker converted, bending a shot just over the four-man wall and inside the upper right-hand corner, freezing Field on the play.

The Jaguars battled for an equalizer down the stretch, playing nearly the final 10 minutes exclusively in the Phoenix half of the field after Green Bay’s Ty Perkins was sent off in the 84th minute with a red card.

Freshman Thomas Weinrich had a shot ring off the right post and the Jaguars nearly struck paydirt on a free kick in the 71st minute, but were unable to get a shot over the endline from point blank range.

Weinrich led IU Indy with four shot attempts and Santiago Sanchez and Quezada had two each. Field finished with eight saves in the loss.

The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Wright State for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team returned to Scheumann Stadium for its 2026 homecoming celebration, battling Sacramento State to a 34-17 victory in front of a crowd of 12,518 – the largest home crowd since 15,318 during homecoming in 2024.

The Cardinals (3-5, 2-1 MAC) earned their second straight win in a traditional seven-day span for the first time since homecoming in 2022 versus Connecticut (Oct. 22). Ball State also recorded its fifth consecutive homecoming win, and its sixth in seven games since 2019.

TJ Horton ran in his conference-leading ninth rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, his second touchdown of the afternoon, to seal the Ball State win over the Hornets (1-7, 0-5 MAC). Horton has collected a pair of rushing touchdowns in back-to-back weeks. His first of the day was a one-yard rush in the closing seconds of the first half, which gave Ball State a 20-10 advantage going into halftime.

Horton finished the day with 33 yards on nine attempts. Jalen Bonds led the Cardinals’ rushing efforts, totaling 77 yards on 17 attempts.

Keldric Luster led Ball State’s offense to total 417 net yards, eclipsing Sacrament State’s 266. By himself, Luster had 302 yards of total offense, tallying over 300 yards in consecutive weeks to become the first Cardinal with that accomplishment since QB John Paddock in 2022. Along with 234 passing yards on 14 completions and two touchdowns, the primary signal caller gained 68 yards on the ground, including a six-yard touchdown at the end of Ball State’s early in the second half.

Luster showed off the power of his arm in the first half versus the Hornets. In the second quarter, at the beginning of a back-and-forth scoring battle with Sacramento State, Luster connected with Isaiah Thacker for a 65-yard touchdown. After the Hornets matched with a 65-yard touchdown on the other end on the responding drive, Luster found Jamarion McDougle for a 55-yard answer to give Ball State another six points.

Although the Cardinals lost two interceptions in the game, including one inside the red zone during the third quarter, Ball State’s defense managed to create opportunities that turned into points. A strip sack caused by Kaleb Stewart was recovered by Ben Marsh with just over 30 seconds left in the first half, leading to Horton’s one-yard score three plays later. The Cardinals also managed a trio of sacks and pass breakups, along with four tackles for loss. Chris Jackson, a transfer from Colorado State, made his first start on Ball State’s defensive unit and led team with five tackles along with Mikeah Webster and Ameir Glenn.

The Cardinals enjoy a bye week before entering MACtion with a road contest at UMass. Kickoff on Nov. 4 is scheduled for 7 or 7:30 p.m., with broadcast available on ESPN+ and WLBC 104.1 FM.

INDIANA STATE VOLLEYBALL

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Saturday’s in-state showdown between Indiana State and Valparaiso turned into a marathon inside the Athletics-Recreation Center, with the Sycamores coming from behind to prevail over the Beacons in five sets (25-22, 4-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13).

The win was the second in conference play for the Sycamores, both of which have been five-set road contests featuring a comeback from the Blue and White. Indiana State overcame dropping the second set by a lopsided 25-4 margin to snap its five-match losing streak.

Kira Holland led the Sycamores with 15 kills and 13 digs, notching her fifth straight double-double while tying for the most kills among players from either team. Taylor Knuth added 10 kills, her most in a conference match, while Hadley Hardersen dished out a career-high 37 assists.

Set 1 | Indiana State 25, Valparaiso 22

Indiana State jumped out to an early lead with Ella Scott asserting herself at the net. Kills from Holland and Knuth kept the Trees in front, with Indiana State extending its lead to 12-9 following a Corinne Knapp kill. Valpo rallied back to claim the lead at the media timeout, but the Sycamores countered with an 8-2 run to go back ahead, with Lily Mueller tallying two kills and a block during the span. Valpo cut the Sycamore lead down to one, but Knuth capped off the set with a kill to give the Trees a 25-22 win in the opener.

Set 2 | Valparaiso 25, Indiana State 4

Kills from Mueller and Holland had the Sycamores ahead 3-2 early in the second set, but that was all the positive momentum Indiana State had in the frame. Valparaiso won 23 of the next 24 points to win the second in a 25-4 landslide.

Set 3 | Valparaiso 25, Indiana State 23

Knapp got things going with an early ace in the third, with Knuth and Scott putting down kills to give the Trees a 4-1 advantage. Indiana State remaind in front with kills from Mueller and Knapp, while Hardersen dropped in an ace to make it 10-7 in favor of the Trees. Knuth added another ace moments later for the Blue and White, as the visitors took a 15-11 lead at the media timeout, but Valpo came rallying back. The Beacons went on a 6-0 run to go in front, but Mueller came right back with a pair of kills and a block assist with Hardersen to level the set. Valparaiso ultimately prevailed by taking the last two points to win the third 25-23.

Set 4 | Indiana State 25, Valparaiso 21

Indiana State continued its trend of starting strong to begin sets, as Scott put down a pair of kills and Knapp tacked on an ace to make it 4-1. Valpo came back to tie the set, but the Sycamores reclaimed their lead thanks in part to errors from the home side midway through. An ace from Holland made it 12-7 in favor of the Trees, while Knapp and Scott teamed up for a block to extend the advantage to seven. Another ace from Knapp, along with a kill from Scott, kept the Trees ahead, but Valpo cut its deficit down to four with a late run. Knapp thwarted the Beacon rally with a pair of kills, and a Valpo service error sealed a 25-21 fourth set win for the Sycamores.

Set 5 | Indiana State 15, Valparaiso 13

Indiana State jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start set five, with a kill from Holland and another Knapp ace headlining the run. The Sycamores remained ahead with two kills from Holland and a block assists from Mueller and Holland, making it 8-4 in favor of the Trees midway through. Indiana State kept its advantage with kills from Holland and Hardersen, but Valpo rallied back with a five-point run to tie the set at 12. Scott and Knuth teamed up for a crucial block late in the set, with Scott later running the tip drill off the slide to clinch a 15-13 win for the Sycamores in the deciding set.

INDIANA STATE FOOTBALL

NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State had its chances against No. 10/10 Illinois State, but turnovers proved costly for the Sycamores as the Redbirds held on to claim the 17-10 victory at Hancock Stadium.

The Sycamores (2-6, 0-4) trailed 17-7 at the halftime break following a Key Crowell pick-six for Illinois State that swung the momentum of a back-and-forth first-half to the Redbirds. Indiana State scored first on the Jayden Reed eight-yard touchdown reception from Brady Allen, while Illinois State answered with a Michael Constantino 22-yard field goal and a Victor Dawson three-yard touchdown run before the Crowell interception.

Indiana State came out of the halftime break looking to take back the momentum on the ground behind Max McCool as the redshirt freshman took the Sycamores’ first offense snap 17 yards to midfield. After the Sycamores moved the ball to the Illinois State 35 on Allen completions to Tyler Stewart and KeShon Singleton, McCool took the ball up the middle and broke loose in the Redbird secondary. However, the Sycamore running back lost the ball and it touched the pylon before rolling out of bounds for the touchback and Illinois State ball.

Indiana State moved the ball into the Illinois State red zone on their next possession in the third quarter but turned the ball over on downs. Another Sycamore possession started at midfield on Nic Yatsko’s second interception of the game, but the Indiana State offense stalled at the Redbird 5-yard line and settled for the Sebastian Lopez 23-yard field goal.

The Sycamores had one final possession late in the contest, moving the ball from their own 13 all the way to the Illinois State 20. A Redbird pass interference call kept the Sycamore drive alive, while KeShon Singleton hauled in a pass at his shoelaces for a 22-yard completion on a 3rd-and-2 near midfield. Indiana State was unable to score the tying touchdown as the drive ended with a pair of incompletions for the turnover on downs to give possession back to the Redbirds for the final kneeldowns.

Brady Allen was 25-of-45 for 279 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the game. Jayden Reed was the favorite target with nine catches for 98 yards and a score, while KeShon Singleton added six receptions for 81 yards. Max McCool finished with 19 carries for a career-high 84 yards on the ground.

Braxton Sampson had a career-high 16 tackles and added 1.0 tackles-for-loss and 0.5 sacks to lead the Sycamore defense. Nic Yatsko recorded his first multi-interception game, while Xavier McIntyre and Zach Coleman both had eight tackles overall.

How They Scored

VALPO FOOTBALL

Fifth-year senior Alex Goworowski (Chicago, Ill. / Saint Patrick) and redshirt junior Max Samuel (Edina, Minn. / Edina) each blocked punts and had big days on defense to propel the Valparaiso University football team to a 24-7 victory over Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon at Brown Field. Goworowski secured a team-high 11 tackles, while Samuel continued to be a force in the backfield.

How It Happened

The Valpo defense forced a quick three-and-out on the game’s opening possession. After a sack by Samuel on third down, Goworowski blocked the Presbyterian punt and Valpo took over at the PC 15-yard line.

The Beacons took advantage of the short field, as Cedric Benning III (Baltimore, Md. / Episcopal [Dickinson]) capped the opening drive by plunging into the end zone from a yard out, putting Valpo ahead 7-0 early.

The teams exchanged punts for the remainder of the opening quarter. Early in the second quarter, Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) found Isaac Tran (Bothell, Wash. / Bothell [University of Puget Sound]) for a 59-yard pitch-and-catch, and that drive culminated with a 10-yard TD dash by Russell Tye (Cleveland, Ohio / Orange) to make it 14-0 with 12:19 left in the second quarter.

Goworowski notched a sack on third down, and then PC went for it on fourth-and-14 from the Valpo 19, and the pass was incomplete, resulting in a turnover on downs.

Valpo moved the ball into the red zone on that drive thanks in large part to a 69-yard hookup between Keefe and Ashton Allen (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany). However, Presbyterian notched a strip sack on 2nd-and-10 from the PC 10, and the Blue Hose recovered to get the takeaway.

The Blue Hose took advantage, marching all the way downfield to score on the ensuing drive with QB Max Holtzclaw keeping it for a 2-yard run with 56 seconds left in the half.

Keefe had a series of five straight quick completions on the next drive, moving the ball well to within field goal range, but the field goal try as the first-half clock expired was wide left, and Valpo went into the locker room leading by only seven at 14-7.

Still holding a seven-point edge, Valpo lost a fumble with 5:54 left in the third quarter and Presbyterian took over at midfield. However, the Beacons responded with a takeaway of their own as Micah Markley (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota West) made an interception and returned it 25 yards to the 50.

Valpo turned it over on downs on the ensuing drive, but the defense forced a Presbyterian punt, and the Beacons came up with yet another big play on special teams. Samuel blocked the punt, and Valpo set up shop at the PC 14.

The Beacons took advantage of the good field position, as Keefe kept it for a 1-yard TD run to cap off that drive, extending the lead to 21-7.

Presbyterian put together an extended drive, but Samuel and Jason Salman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson [Marietta]) combined for a sack on 3rd-and-14 from the Valpo 21, dropping the QB for an eight-yard loss compounded by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Blue Hose. Presbyterian went for it on 4th-and-37 from the Valpo 44, and turned it over on downs.

Kicker Luke Scoma (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue) drilled a 48-yard field goal on the next Valpo possession, stretching the lead to 24-7 with 5:37 to play.

PC had a long drive but eventually turned it over on downs, and the Beacons ticked off the remainder of the clock.

Inside the Game

The blocked kicks were Valpo’s sixth and seventh of the season, moving the Beacons into a tie for the FCS lead. The only other team nationally in FCS with seven is fellow Pioneer Football League member Marist.

With the team’s seventh blocked kick of the season, Valpo moves into a tie for third in program history with the 2002 season.

In terms of blocked punts specifically, the two on Saturday bring the team’s season total to five, taking over the outright national lead in FCS.

Valpo improved to 3-1 at home this season, the first time the program has been 3-1 or better through four home games since 2017. This guarantees that Valpo will at least tie for its highest home win total since 2017 (4-1), matching several other recent seasons where the Beacons had three Brown-Field victories.

The Beacons knocked off a Presbyterian team that entered Saturday with a three-game winning streak and 3-1 PFL mark. The Blue Hose went 10-2 overall last season and tied for second in the PFL.

Presbyterian entered the game ranked 25th nationally in passing offense at 250.7 yards per game. The Beacons held the Blue Hose to 131 yards through the air.

Keefe had 20 or more completions for the fourth time this season and the first time in the last four games, finishing 21-of-29 for 275 yards. The 275 passing yards marked a career high, surpassing 249 from earlier this season at Murray State. Keefe’s output on Saturday helped him eclipse the 1,500-yard mark for his career.

The 69-yard pass from Keefe to Allen represented Valpo’s longest completion of the season. That marked Valpo’s longest play through the air since Chris Duncan found Griffin Norberg for 75 yards on Nov. 10, 2018 vs. Jacksonville.

Valpo’s 275 passing yards marked the team’s highest total since Oct. 29, 2022 at Dayton (323).

Valpo’s 379 yards of total offense represented the team’s second-highest total of the season, narrowly behind 389 at Morehead State.

The Valpo defense has shut out the opponent in the second half in three of the last four games. Morehead State, Drake and Presbyterian were all held scoreless after the intermission.

Redshirt junior Marty O’Keeffe (Orland Park, Ill. / Brother Rice) hauled in a team-high five receptions for 44 yards on a day where Keefe’s 21 completions went to 10 different players. O’Keeffe’s five grabs represented a career high.

Goworowski notched his fourth career blocked kick and first this season. His 11 tackles marked a career high.

Samuel’s two sacks lifted his season total to 8.5 to go along with 17.0 tackles for loss. Samuel has recorded a sack in five straight games and seven of eight overall this season. He entered this week already ranked among the national leaders in both sacks and tackles for loss.

Samuel’s blocked kick was the fourth of his career and first since 2023.

Scoma’s 48-yard field goal was the longest of his career. This marked Valpo’s longest field goal since Ryan Hawk’s 50 yarder on Nov. 23, 2024 vs. Davidson.

Senior offensive lineman Noah Kline (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) made his 40th consecutive start, extending a streak that dates back to his collegiate debut on Sept. 23, 2023 vs. Marist.

Benning scored his fourth touchdown of the season. He has found paydirt in three of the last four games.

Tye scored the first TD of his collegiate career.

Keefe’s rushing touchdown was his fourth of the season and the seventh of his collegiate career.

Markley’s interception was the first of his collegiate career.

Valpo held Presbyterian to just 2-of-14 on third down.

The Beacons have doubled their win total from last season and secured their highest PFL win total since 2022.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL

Making its sole appearance at the ARC in a stretch of seven out of eight matches on the road, the Valpo volleyball team dropped a five-set match (25-22, 4-25, 25-23, 21-25, 13-15) to visiting Indiana State Saturday evening.

How It Happened

Indiana State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the decisive fifth set. The Beacons scored the next three to cut the deficit to one, but the Sycamores responded by scoring four of the next five points and led by as many as five points, the latest coming at 12-7.

Valpo wasn’t done yet, scoring five in a row to even the set at 12-12. The run started with a Keira Lucas (Brazil, Ind./Northview) libero kill on a scramble point, featured a block from Kyla Bellich (Thomson, Ill./Prince of Peace Catholic) and Jordyn Gove (Amarillo, Texas/Randall) and was capped by a Gove kill as the entire match became a run to three.

The next point proved key, as Valpo was originally awarded the point on a net violation by Indiana State. The Sycamores challenged the point, and upon review, the call was overturned to a Beacon net violation. Indiana State scored the next point as well to earn match point at 14-12, and while Gove came through with a kill to keep hope alive, the Sycamores got a kill of their own on their second match point.

Valpo’s lone lead of the opening set came after a mid-set run put it ahead 15-14 at the media timeout. ISU scored the next three to regain the lead and extended its lead out to 22-17, and while the Beacons closed to within 23-22 late, the Sycamores came up with back-to-back points to take the opener.

The second set was all Valpo, as the Beacons racked up 11 kills on just 14 swings and had five service aces while the Sycamores committed nine attack errors. Trailing 3-2, Valpo went on a 6-0 run on the serve of Ava Helming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston), and after an ISU sideout, closed out the set on a 17-0 run on the serve of Maggie Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond Burton Community [Central Michigan]).

ISU led throughout the first half of the third set, with Valpo’s first advantage coming after a 5-0 run gave it an 18-16 lead. The Beacons were unable to pull away, and the Sycamores tied the frame up at 23-23 late. But an ISU service error gave Valpo set point, and Helming combined with Maddie Steele (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) on a block to give the Beacons the 2-1 lead in the match.

A five-point run in set four turned a 7-7 tie into a 12-7 Indiana State lead, and the Sycamores held the edge the rest of the way to force the decisive fifth set.

Inside the Match

Helming registered 15 kills, reaching double figures for the 18th time this season and for the 10th straight match. The junior also had three service aces.

Jessica Pickett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) set a career best with 14 kills and hit at a stellar .522 clip while also pacing the Beacons at the net with four blocks.

Gove finished with 10 kills and tied for match-high honors with 14 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.

Uhwat delivered four service aces, one shy of her carer best, to push her season total to 36 — fifth-most by a Valpo player in the 25-point era.

Olivia Wagner (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) racked up 30 assists and posted a .484 setting percentage.

Lucas matched Gove with 14 digs to lead all players, while Rylee Bumgardner (Danville, Ind./Danville) hit double digits in the category for the 12th time this year with 10 digs.

While the teams both racked up 53 kills, Valpo ended the night with a .223-.117 advantage in hitting percentage. The Beacons also led in the digs column, 65-57.

The four points Valpo surrendered in the second set was the fewest the program has given up in a single frame (outside the fifth set) since the move to 25-point scoring. Uhwat served 16 consecutive points to close that set, a mark which according to the NCAA Record Book is tied for 10th-most consecutive points served in D-I history.

Next Up

Valpo (11-11, 3-7 MVC) returns to the road life next week, making the trip to central Illinois beginning on Friday evening at Illinois State.

UINDY MEN’S SOCCER

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men’s soccer team won a thrilling 3-2 game on Senior Day against the Truman State Bulldogs.

The win marks head coach Gabe Hall’s 50th win at UIndy as a head coach.

Early on the offense challenged the Bulldogs, but saw a response soon after from the visitors. The two teams traded offensive chances through the first 20 minutes before Truman scored the opening goal off of a penalty kick in the 26th minute.

Truman then followed up that goal with another just five minutes later, putting UIndy in their biggest first half deficit of the season and scoring the most goals against UIndy in a game all of October.

After the goal the duo of Tobias Herrera V and Brendan French came into the game and proved to be major difference makers as the game progressed

Almost immediately after halftime those two combined with Shayne Abrams to create a beautiful tapestry of passes for French to then score off of to bring the Greyhounds within one in the 50th minute.

The Hounds continued to rally, pressuring the Bulldog backline before Rick Lammerts came up with a save to keep the score at 2-1. Immediately after the Lammerts save Brendan French then earned an assist, setting up Alexander Veridiano for the equalizer.

Again, the Bulldogs attempted to race back down the field, but Lammerts found another timely save and the offense reset once more. Then the Greyhounds found their third goal in 11 minutes and nine seconds of in-game action with a precisely placed shot by Brendan French off a Sam Siegel assist gave the Greyhounds the lead.

Their three goals in 11 minutes and nine seconds is the fewest time between three goals since they scored three goals in seven minutes and 18 seconds in their 4-2 win over Upper Iowa on September 19th last season.

After the third UIndy goal it became a battle for possession over the final 20 minutes of the game where each team traded possession while UIndy looked to find their fourth goal of the game and the Bulldogs yearned for their own equalizer.

A number of stoppages for fouls, corner kicks and goal kicks cycled in during those final 20 minutes, but the Greyhounds continued to bend, but not break, to win the game 3-2.

The last time the Greyhounds came back to win a game after going down by two points at half was in the opening round of the Midwest Regional when they scored three goals in the second half to beat the McKendree Bearcats 4-3 and make the second round of the regional.

The Greyhounds will return to action when they host the opening round of the GLVC tournament on Sunday, Nov. 1. More information about the matchup will be released in the coming week.

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women’s soccer team fell 1-0 at home against the Truman State Bulldogs.

The matchup saw the Bulldogs control possession throughout with the visitors finding seven corner kicks between the 10th and 25th minutes of action.

Samaya Hogg in her first start since September helped keep the Greyhounds close with a pair of saves in the first half.

Nicole Schroeder was the first UIndy player to find a shot on goal as she fired one on target with a minute left in the first half.
