MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
MLB ROUNDUP: RAYS, DODGERS, BREWERS WRAP UP DIVISION SERIES
Rookie Victor Mesa Jr. belted a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays earned a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep of their American League Division Series.
The Rays are headed to the AL Championship Series for the third time in club history and will host the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Guardians in a best-of-seven series that begins Monday.
Tampa Bay also celebrated at Yankee Stadium for the second time this season after clinching the AL East title with a 6-1 win over the Yankees on Sept. 22.
The Yankees were thwarted in part by a fan-interference call that overturned a potential game-tying homer from Anthony Volpe in the bottom of the sixth. A fan reached over the left field fence and the ball caromed off the spectator’s palm. Volpe was originally awarded a home run, but following a crew-chief review, he was placed on second with an RBI double.
New York starter Max Fried (1-1) allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He fanned seven without issuing a walk.
Dodgers 4, Braves 1
Andy Pages’ two-run single in the seventh inning broke open a pitchers’ duel and helped visiting Los Angeles close out its National League Division Series against Atlanta in Game 4.
The Dodgers, who won the series 3-1 and are looking to be the first National League team to win three straight World Series, await the Brewers, who advance after beating the Padres.
Pages’ hit was Los Angeles’ first with runners in scoring position in the series after the team started 0-for-14. He had two of the Dodgers’ five hits and two of their three RBIs in the win. Tyler Mahle (0-1) was a tough-luck loser for Atlanta, charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Brewers 3, Padres 1
Jackson Chourio delivered the tiebreaking single and Garrett Mitchell robbed a potential game-tying homer in the eighth inning to help Milwaukee advance to the National League Championship Series.
Aaron Ashby (1-0) tossed three innings of scoreless, hitless relief for the Brewers, who halted their major-league-record-tying 12-game postseason road losing streak dating back to 2018. Milwaukee finished off the best-of-five NL Division Series with a 3-1 edge. Milwaukee will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS for the second straight season. The Dodgers swept the four-game set last year when the Brewers scored just four runs.
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered in the third inning for the Padres. The only other San Diego hits came in the first inning, when Jackson Merrill singled and Manny Machado followed with a bunt single. The Padres wound up leaving the bases loaded without scoring in that frame.
Guardians 9, White Sox 3
Jose Ramirez collected his first two hits of the American League Division Series, drove in two runs and contributed a key defensive play as visiting Cleveland trimmed Chicago’s lead in the best-of-five to 2-1.
Guardians pitchers struck out 19 batters to set a single-game major league record for a nine-inning postseason game. Foster Griffin (1-0) fanned seven in 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Cleveland’s Jo Adell hit a three-run triple.
Chicago reliever Bryan Hudson (1-1) allowed three runs in one-third of an inning. White Sox pitchers issued 10 walks.

THE NFL HAS A RECORD-TYING 5 TEAMS WITH AN 0-4 RECORD SO FAR THIS SEASON
There’s a race to the bottom of the NFL standings four games into the season, including some surprisingly winless teams.
A record-tying five teams are 0-4 one month in, marking just the seventh time that has happened in NFL history and the first since 2019.
Some of the winless teams aren’t too surprising, with Miami there as part of a rebuild in a season when the Dolphins are carrying a record $184 million in dead money charges on the salary cap. Tennessee is winless after back-to-back three-win seasons.
The other winless teams are a bit more of a surprise: Tampa Bay is there after coming into the season as the favorite to win the NFC South, while Houston and the Los Angeles Chargers are 0-4 after making the playoffs last season.
This is just the third time in NFL history that two teams started a season 0-4 after making the playoffs the previous season. It also happened in 1999 with defending conference champions Atlanta and Denver doing it, and in 1992 with the Los Angeles Raiders and New York Jets both starting 0-4.
The Buccaneers have lost four one-score games, with their minus-20 point differential the fifth-best ever for an 0-4 team, and the best since Minnesota was outscored by 19 points over the first four games in 2011.
The Chargers haven’t been nearly as competitive, getting outscored by 39 points for the second-worst point differential in the league so far.
The start for the Texans has been frustrating because they have led in the final 2 minutes in three of the four losses, including a 34-30 loss to Dallas on Sunday when the Cowboys scored the winning touchdown with 40 seconds to play.
They are the second team since at least 1991 to lose three times in the first four games after leading in the final 2 minutes. The Chargers did it in 2016. The only other teams in the Super Bowl era to start the season 0-4 despite leading at any point in the fourth quarter in three of the games were the 2013 Bucs and 2011 Vikings.
C.J. Stroud is the first quarterback since 1950, when starts were first tracked, to lose the first four games of a season without throwing an interception.
Three teams have started the season 4-0, with Kansas City and Minnesota doing it after missing the playoffs in 2025. The last time two teams started 4-0 after missing the playoffs was 2013, when the Chiefs and New Orleans did it.
Super Bowl MVP shines in new home
Signing away the reigning Super Bowl MVP hasn’t worked so well in the past. It couldn’t be going better for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kenneth Walker III has transformed Kansas City’s offense since leaving Seattle in free agency in March. His 537 yards rushing are the most for any player through four games since Arian Foster had 539 yards in 2010.
Walker rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-27 win over Las Vegas on Sunday, making him the fourth player to have at least 175 yards from scrimmage in three of the first four games of a season. Christian McCaffrey did it in 2019, Billy Sims as a rookie for Detroit in 1980 and Jim Brown in 1963. Sims is the only other player to do it in his first four games with a franchise.
Walker already has six runs of at least 20 yards this season — doubling Kansas City’s total for all of 2025.
His performance is far different from the other three Super Bowl MVPs who changed teams immediately after winning the award.
Larry Brown had one interception in 12 games over two seasons with the Raiders after winning Super Bowl MVP for Dallas following the 1995 season. Brown was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team in 1997 and then was cut.
The Raiders signed Desmond Howard in 1997 after he won the award for Green Bay. Howard caught six passes and had two punt return TDs in two seasons for Oakland.
Dexter Jackson fared better after leaving Tampa Bay for Arizona, with six interceptions in 2003, but he was cut the following year.
Flag day hits the NFL as penalties rise
The NFL came close to setting a record for penalties last week, with the 271 accepted infractions the second most in any week in league history. The highest was 298 in Week 2 of the 2015 season.
There were an average of 16.9 penalties per game in Week 4 for the second-highest mark since 2000.
The biggest culprit was the game Sunday between the Chargers and Seattle when there were 30 accepted penalties for 280 yards, including seven personal fouls against the Seahawks. Three other games had at least 20 accepted penalties last week.
In all, the average of 15 penalties per game rank fourth highest since 2000 through four weeks and the highest since it was at 15.3 in 2015.
There have been noticeable increases this season in offensive holding, false starts and defensive holding compared with last season.
There is a large disparity between teams. Green Bay and Cleveland are both averaging more than 10 accepted penalties a game, while San Francisco and Indianapolis have had less than five.

COMMANDERS FOCUSING ON WAYS JAYDEN DANIELS CAN PROTECT HIMSELF AS HE PREPARES FOR RETURN TO FIELD
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders are focusing on ways in which quarterback Jayden Daniels can protect himself as he prepares for his expected return against the New York Giants on Sunday, Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday.
If he starts, Daniels would be returning to the lineup three weeks after he dislocated his left elbow when it bent awkwardly as he tried to brace himself on a fall during a play against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. The injury was the second elbow dislocation for Daniels, who missed most of the second half of last season with the same injury.
“In a group, think of it like a running back who clasps the ball,” Quinn said. “Rolling to the ground. I thought of him as that player, and that’s the way we explained it. Those are honestly just some practice drills that we’ll be doing today. It’s definitely something we talk about. We’re going to practice, and this is him moving forward and how we’ll play.”
The third-year quarterback will also wear a protective brace on his elbow.
Daniels has completed 56.9% of his passes this season and has thrown for 260 yards through a game and a half so far this year. He’s also rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries.
The Commanders (1-3) turned to Marcus Mariota in Daniels’ absence. But Mariota suffered an MCL injury in the Commanders’ loss to the Colts last Sunday in London and was replaced by rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis.
Mariota will not be placed on injured reserve, Quinn said.

LAMAR JACKSON ABSENT AT THE START OF PRACTICE, 3 DAYS AFTER INJURING HIS ANKLE
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Lamar Jackson was not at practice for the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday during the portion open to reporters.
Jackson also wasn’t available before practice — Wednesday is when he usually talks — after injuring his ankle in Sunday’s win over Tennessee. Jackson’s ankle appeared to roll under an opposing player near the end of the first half, and he did not return.
Baltimore plays at Atlanta on Sunday night.
Tyler Huntley is Jackson’s backup. He led the Ravens to wins over Chicago and Green Bay last season.

RAVENS ACQUIRE PRO BOWL C CAM JURGENS FROM EAGLES
The Baltimore Ravens acquired two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday.
The Ravens pocketed a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft in exchange for a fifth-round selection in that same draft and a second-round pick in 2028.
“Cam is a player we have long admired going all the way back to the draft process. He’s a young foundational piece along our offensive line — a great scheme and cultural fit who will contribute quickly in Baltimore. We are confident that Cam will significantly impact our team and community,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement.
Baltimore was seeking an answer at center after All-Pro Tyler Linderbaum departed in free agency, triggering a turnstile effect at the position. Vega Ioane is the fourth player the Ravens have tried at center.
The Eagles subtract Jurgens from the roster just as six-time Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement. Johnson retired Tuesday after 14 seasons and two Super Bowl championships.
Johnson, 36, who missed Sunday’s loss against the Los Angeles Rams for personal reasons, said he wants to focus on his mental health.
Jurgens, who has played both guard and center, is expected to make his Ravens debut next week against the Cleveland Browns because he is currently in concussion protocol.
Jurgens, 27, took over for the retired Jason Kelce and played in 20 regular-season and playoff games (19 starts) during the Eagles’ run to a title in Super Bowl
Signed to a four-year, $68 million extension in 2025, Jurgens started all four games this season and 45 of the 62 in which he has appeared since Philadelphia drafted him in the second round out of Nebraska in 2022.
The Ravens shuffled Ioane from guard to center for last Sunday’s 24-18 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Vegas was selected 14th overall in this year’s draft out of Penn State.
Center Jovaughn Gwyn sustained a fractured fibula in Baltimore’s 34-31 win over Dallas on Sept. 27 and is expected to miss two to three months.
The Ravens also lost center Ethan Pocic in the victory over the Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro due to a long-term knee injury.
Baltimore already was without center Danny Pinter, expected to be the opening-week starter, to a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKS: WEEK 6 MATCHUPS GIVE POWER FOUR CONTENDERS CHANCE TO JOCKEY FOR POSITION
It’s too early to call it Separation Saturday, but this week’s college football schedule will start establishing the pecking order in the Power Four conferences.
In the Southeastern Conference, the Georgia-Alabama winner will be 4-0 in league play and ahead of the pack along with Texas, assuming the Longhorns beat Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry game in Dallas.
In the Big Ten, Ohio State has an easy assignment playing Maryland at the Horseshoe, but Indiana faces its toughest game to date at Nebraska and Oregon hosts a much-improved UCLA.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference, Miami gets the week off while the other two unbeatens in league play try to keep pace. Pittsburgh hosts North Carolina and Duke visits Georgia Tech.
In the Big 12, Texas Tech and surprising Baylor are off while BYU plays Iowa State at home and Utah hosts Kansas. Oklahoma State can show its a contender with a home win over UCF.
The picks, with rankings and betting lines. All games Saturday unless noted:
No. 1 Texas vs. Oklahoma (plus 8 1/2) in Dallas
Oklahoma’s defense is strong enough to keep this close, and quarterback John Mateer got a vote of confidence from Brent Venables this week. That doesn’t change the fact the Sooners’ offense is a mess.
Pick: Texas 21-14.
No. 2 Georgia at No. 6 Alabama (minus 2)
Keelon Russell and the Crimson Tide are on a roll and playing at home, as long as a tropical storm doesn’t interfere. Georgia’s big offensive numbers have come against a schedule that ranks in bottom quarter of FBS.
Pick: Alabama 31-28.
Stanford at No. 3 Notre Dame (minus 38 1/2)
Fighting Irish had trouble putting away North Carolina last week. That shouldn’t be a problem against Stanford, which is playing back-to-back games in the Eastern time zone.
Pick: Notre Dame 52-10.
Maryland at No. 5 Ohio State (minus 34 1/2)
Buckeyes have scored at least 52 points in six of nine meetings since Maryland joined the Big Ten. They might score 62 or more this time.
Pick: Ohio State 62-21.
No. 7 Indiana (minus 7 1/2) at Nebraska
Turbo Richard-Lee Bebee Jr. at running back and Charlie Becker-Nick Marsh at receiver for the Hoosiers are the best combos in the nation. Cornhuskers have lost 30 straight to Top 25 opponents.
Pick: Indiana 38-17.
Iowa State at No. 8 BYU (minus 10)
Cougars are tough on Friday nights in Provo, and they’re going for a third straight 5-0 start. Aiden Flora’s prodigious production against West Virginia won’t carry over for the Cyclones.
Pick: BYU 39-19.
No. 9 Mississippi at Vanderbilt (plus 9)
Rebels have had an extra week to stew over their loss to Florida. Let’s see if they’ve tightened up a defense that’s last in the SEC.
Pick: Mississippi 30-27.
No. 10 LSU at Kentucky (plus 8)
LSU’s Sam Leavitt has had a couple nice outings but has thrown at least one interception in every game. Kentucky is tough at home.
Pick: LSU 27-24.
Kansas at No. 12 Utah (minus 15)
Utes are well-rested after an open date and are giving up just 10.3 points per game. Wayshawn Parker piled up 174 yards rushing against Iowa State and might go off again against the Jayhawks.
Pick: Utah 35-13.
Texas A&M at No. 14 Missouri (minus 3 1/2)
Missouri’s Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards against Florida and is second in the SEC at 121 yards per game. No player has run for 100 against the Aggies this season.
Pick: Missouri 27-21.
No. 15 Tennessee (minus 13 1/2) at Arkansas
Look for the Volunteers to give Arkansas a steady dose of DeSean Bishop. Razorbacks have allowed 15 rushing touchdowns, tied for most in the nation.
Pick: Tennessee 41-10.
South Carolina at No. 16 Florida (minus 13)
With back-to-back games coming up against Texas and Georgia, Gators want to flush what happened last week at Missouri in a hurry. A Gamecocks team in disarray is just the tonic.
Pick: Florida 36-21.
UCF at No. 18 Oklahoma State (minus 9)
UCF blew a 17-point, third-quarter lead at Houston last week, has injury issues and goes to Stillwater on an 11-game road losing streak. Cowboys are coming off an open date.
Pick: Oklahoma State 35-13.
No. 19 Southern California at Penn State (minus 1)
Nittany Lions got outmuscled by Northwestern and fans are starting to squirm because of new coach Matt Campbell’s 0-2 start in Big Ten play. USC struggles on the road and is playing in the Eastern time zone for second time in four games.
Pick: Penn State 27-24.
No. 20 Iowa at Washington (minus 3)
Hawkeyes could be without QB Hank Brown, who appeared to hurt his shoulder against Ohio State and is questionable.
Pick: Washington 23-17.
No. 21 UCLA (plus 11) at No. 13 Oregon
Bruins are out to a surprising 4-0 start and can score in bunches. So can Oregon, and the Ducks are at home and in good hands whether Dante Moore or Dylan Raiola starts.
Pick: Oregon 34-28.
No. 22 Houston at Kansas State (minus 2 1/2)
A fun nugget is that Houston QB Conner Weigman is facing the team coached by his former Texas A&M offensive coordinator, Collin Klein, who benched him in 2024 and replaced him with Marcel Reed.
Pick: Kansas State 30-27.
No. 23 Boise State at Fresno State (plus 6 1/2)
The teams play for something called the Milk Can Trophy, and the Bulldogs have had possession of it for three years. Fresno State has allowed a total of 43 points over its last four games.
Pick: Fresno State 23-22.
North Carolina at No. 25 Pittsburgh (minus 4)
Pitt fifth-year QB Holden Geriner will make his first career start in place of Mason Heintschel (ACL). Tar Heels are 1-5 on road under Bill Belichick.
Pick: Pittsburgh 32-26.
Bye weeks: No. 4 Miami, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 17 Mississippi State, No. 24 SMU.

It will be a top-10 matchup between teams in The Associated Press Top 25 when No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Alabama face off Saturday night.
So what’s new?
What’s new is No. 21 UCLA elbowing its way into the Big Ten conversation in Bob Chesney’s first season. The Bruins, mostly dreadful for two years, are 4-0 and already have one more win than they did last season. They will face their biggest challenge so far when they visit No. 13 Oregon.
As for Georgia and Alabama, no two teams have played each other so often for high stakes the last dozen or so seasons, but this isn’t your typical rivalry where the schools are on each other’s schedule year after year. Seven of the last 11 meetings have taken place at neutral sites — five SEC championship games and two national title games — and only four were regular-season games.
That makes it a rivalry game you often have to hope for — maybe the best kind.
The fact the Bulldogs haven’t won in Tuscaloosa since 2007 probably should be taken with a grain of salt. But it’s notable that Matthew Stafford, who’s still slinging it for the Los Angeles Rams in his 18th NFL season, was the last Georgia QB to leave Bryant-Denny Stadium with a victory.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 25 Pittsburgh moves on without injured quarterback Mason Heintschel and will try to go 6-0 when North Carolina visits. The Tar Heels squandered a 14-point lead against Clemson and hung with Notre Dame into the second half before losing a second straight game, and now coach Bill Belichick faces mounting pressure with Duke and Miami still on the October schedule.
The Big 12’s main event is under the lights Friday when Iowa State visits No. 8 BYU. The Cyclones get the late-night window to show off emerging star running back Aiden Flora, who may be the best player you’ve never heard of. Last week he ran for three touchdowns and a career-high 212 yards and passed for two TDs against West Virginia.
Best game
No. 2 Georgia (5-0, 3-0 SEC) at No. 6 Alabama (5-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
When you think of Georgia football under Kirby Smart, hard-nosed, suffocating defenses often come to mind. Since Smart took over in 2016, the Bulldogs have allowed 16.7 points per game, tied with Iowa for best in the nation over that span, according to Sportradar. Alabama has been right there with them.
But it’s offense, and lots of it, that has been the headliner through five games. Georgia’s 51.4 points per game ranks first in the nation and Alabama’s 49.6 is third.
The Bulldogs have popped 12 plays of 40-plus yards, most among Power Four teams, and the Gunner Stockton-led offense is the only one in the nation averaging better than 50 points per game.
Alabama is the only team to score at least 45 points in each of its games. First-year starting QB Keelon Russell averages 282.8 yards passing per game and an impressive 10.7 per attempt. He looked very comfortable in the spotlight in last week’s win at Mississippi State.
Heisman Trophy watch
Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has put together back-to-back 200-yard receiving games to establish himself as the clear front-runner for the Heisman, at least among the wagering public. When the Buckeyes host Maryland, Smith could become the first receiver with three 200-yard games since Hawaii’s Ashley Lelie in 2001.
Smith’s 44 catches for 823 yards are the most by an FBS player through five games since Syracuse’s Amba Etta-Tawo had 47 for 840 in 2016, according to Sportradar.
Smith is a less-than-even-money choice at some online sportsbooks. Miami’s Darian Mensah and Alabama’s Russell both are at 7-to-1. Russell has an opportunity to tighten the race with a big performance against No. 2 Georgia.
Numbers to know
0 — Points allowed in the first quarter by Indiana, the only team to hold opponents scoreless the first 15 minutes.
3.6 — New Mexico’s turnover margin. The Lobos have 19 takeaways, eight more than the next closest team, and their one turnover is tied with Notre Dame and Indiana for fewest.
35.8 — Average points per game in Bowl Subdivision games, the highest through a Week 5 since 2018, according to Sportradar.
52 — LSU’s nation-leading number of big plays, defined as runs for 10-plus yards and passes of 20-plus yards.
6,621 — Elevation in feet of Air Force’s Falcon Stadium, which might be part of the reason it’s a touchback haven for kickers. None of a combined 39 kickoffs through four games have been returned.
Under the radar
No. 7 Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) at Nebraska (5-0, 2-0), Saturday, noon ET (Fox)
The Cornhuskers have been a bit out of sight, out of mind as they’ve scuffled through Big Ten play and lost 30 straight to Top 25 opponents the last 10 years. The defending national champion Hoosiers, winners of 21 straight, could be looking at a trap game the week before they host No. 5 Ohio State.
The Hoosiers’ only real test has come against Northwestern, a 29-23 home win. The Huskers’ schedule has not been onerous, and when challenged by Michigan State and Maryland, they went on to win easily.
Nebraska is motivated to become nationally relevant again, and beating a top-10 opponent for the first time since 2015 would be a huge step.
Hot seat
South Carolina’s Shane Beamer undoubtedly is in trouble, but his massive buyout might buy him time.
The Gamecocks are coming off their eighth straight loss in a Southeastern Conference game, and 10th in 11, and this one was brutal. They blew a 17-0 lead at home against Kentucky and lost 35-34 in overtime. Boos rained down on Beamer as he jogged off the field. This week the Gamecocks visit No. 16 Florida, which will be looking for redemption after an embarrassing loss at Missouri.
Beamer appeared to break through in 2024 with a 9-4 season that included five straight SEC wins. The Gamecocks were picked fifth in the SEC in 2025, and Beamer was featured prominently in the Netflix preseason documentary “Any Given Saturday.” The Gamecocks are 6-11 overall and 1-10 in the SEC since.
Beamer’s salary is $8.25 million this season under a contract that runs through 2030. He would have been owed $24 million if he were fired after the Kentucky loss, according to The State newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina. That figure would drop to $22.8 after the final game.

BIG 10 FOOTBALL
Big Ten football is in full swing as we enter Week 6. From an undefeated battle in Lincoln featuring the defending champions to a ranked clash between West Coast rivals at Autzen Stadium, there’s no shortage of storylines.
Undefeated Hoosiers Meet Undefeated Huskers in Lincoln
Blue-blood tradition meets college football’s newest powerhouse when No. 7 Indiana visits Nebraska. The five-time national title-winner Huskers — off to their best start since 2016 — host the defending champion Hoosiers, who are on a 21-game win streak, the Big Ten’s longest since 2014.
Nebraska has rattled off five straight wins with a nearly 30-point average margin of victory, but Curt Cignetti’s team presents their sternest test yet. Indiana ranks third in the conference averaging 44.2 points per game while boasting the Big Ten’s No. 1 scoring defense (10.8 PPG allowed). Nebraska will count on quarterback Anthony Colandrea, whose 13 passing touchdowns rank third in the league, to navigate an elite Hoosier unit.
Meanwhile, a Husker defense fresh off a second-half shutout against Maryland must contain an Indiana offense firing on all cylinders. Hoosiers quarterback Josh Hoover leads the Big Ten with 15 touchdown passes (also third nationally) and zero interceptions, flanked by a lethal group of playmakers. Against Rutgers, Indiana became the first Big Ten team since 1995 to have two 100-yard rushers (Turbo Richard, Lee Beebe Jr.) and two 100-yard receivers (Nick Marsh, Charlie Becker) in a single game.
Something has to give when two of the Big Ten’s unbeatens square off. Catch the game on FOX at 12 p.m. ET.
Undefeated UCLA Challenges No. 13 Ducks at Autzen
Autzen Stadium sets the stage for a premier West Coast Big Ten clash as undefeated No. 21 UCLA visits No. 13 Oregon. Though the programs haven’t met since 2024, new Bruins head coach Bob Chesney is no stranger to Eugene. Before guiding UCLA to a 4-0 start, Chesney brought James Madison into Autzen Stadium for a 2025 College Football Playoff matchup —a 51-34 victory for Dan Lanning’s Ducks.
Returning to Eugene alongside Chesney is star running back Wayne Knight, who followed his coach to Westwood. Knight, who leads the Big Ten with nine rushing touchdowns, and UCLA’s conference-leading ground attack (281.5 yards per game) collide with an Oregon defense led by Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti.
Oregon will turn to quarterback Dylan Raiola if Dante Moore is sidelined for Saturday. Raiola proved more than ready after stepping in against USC, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Facing a Bruins defense coming off a three-point performance, his poise will determine whether the Ducks preserve home-field dominance or if UCLA pulls off a road upset. View the game on CBS at 3:30 p.m. ET.
USC Meets 110,000 at Beaver Stadium
Happy Valley will host one of the best traditions in college football when Penn State faces No. 19 USC in the White Out game. Though the Nittany Lions have started 0-2 in conference play, Matt Campbell’s squad looks for a raucous crowd of 110,000+ at Beaver Stadium to provide the energy.
Penn State’s defense faces a stern test against USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, who ranks second nationally with 1,744 passing yards and is tied for third with 15 touchdown passes. With the Trojans averaging 311.7 yards through the air and 37.3 points per game, the Nittany Lions must deliver their sharpest performance of the season to keep USC’s attack in check.
Iowa Seeks Offensive Spark at Husky Stadium
Coming off their first setback of the season, No. 20 Iowa heads west to Husky Stadium for a Big Ten matchup against Washington on Friday night (9 p.m. ET on FOX). The Hawkeyes need to contain quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who is fourth in the conference with 1,327 passing yards and a major threat on the ground.
Kirk Ferentz’s team will need to improve on offense after scoring just one touchdown against Ohio State. Look for running back Kamari Moulton and receiver Reece Vander Zee (two touchdowns against Michigan) to be the spark plugs the Hawkeyes need to get back in the win column.
The matchups don’t stop there: Minnesota and Purdue square off after each having thrilling victories and No. 5 Ohio State returns home after Jeremiah Smith captured the program’s receiving triple crown.
#################
Week 6 features seven conference matchups, highlighted by No. 21 UCLA and No. 13 Oregon meeting at Autzen Stadium for a top-25 showdown at 3:30pm ET Saturday on CBS. A clash of the unbeatens is set for noon ET on FOX when No. 7 Indiana visits RV Nebraska.
Dating back to the 2025 campaign, Indiana has won 21 straight games (including bowl and Big Ten Championship Game records). The Hoosiers are on the longest active streak in FBS and fifth longest streak by a Big Ten team since 1945.
Minnesota moved to 2-0 in Big Ten play with a 20-14 win over Michigan, its first versus the Wolverines since 2014 and first at home since 1977.
Nebraska improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2016 after defeating Maryland, 48-23.
Northwestern opened its New Ryan Field with a 34-13 victory over Penn State. It was their most points the Wildcats had scored against the Nittany Lions since 2001. Northwestern finished with 413 rushing yards, their most in a game since 2003.
The Big Ten has six teams ranked in the top 25 in the FBS for scoring defense, including three in the top 10. Five teams are among the top 15 in scoring offense with four in the top 10. Indiana is one of only three teams in the top 10 of both categories.
The Big Ten had 10 teams included in both this week’s AP and US LBM Coaches Polls. The AP poll featured No. 5 Ohio State, No. 7 Indiana, No. 13 Oregon, No. 19 USC, No. 20 Iowa and No. 21 UCLA, while Wisconsin, Northwestern, Nebraska and Minnesota received votes. Oregon was the lone team whose ranking remained the same in the coaches’ poll with shifts for No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 17 USC, No. 18 Iowa and No. 22 UCLA. Nebraska, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Minnesota also earned votes.
The Big Ten Football Players of the Week were announced Monday with Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Wisconsin’s Colton Joseph being named Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Smith had 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns against Iowa. His performance lifted the wide receiver to stand alone atop the Buckeyes leaderboard for career catches (207), receiving yards (3,381) and touchdowns (36). Joseph ran for 141 yards and scored once on 13 carries while also throwing for 145 yards and three touchdowns versus Michigan State. Joseph’s 141 rushing yards were the second most in a game for a Badger quarterback in program history and his 47-yard touchdown run was the longest for a Wisconsin quarterback since 1998.
Northwestern’s Braydon Brus earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition after recording nine tackles (three solo), 1.0 TFL, one sack, an interception and a pass breakup against Penn State. Brus is just the third Big Ten player in the last decade (first since 2020) to post nine tackles, one INT, one sack and one PBU in the same game.
Purdue’s Jacobo Echeverria Lozano was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals to help the Boilermakers defeat Illinois for the program’s first conference victory since 2023. He ranks second for most field goals made by a Purdue freshman kicker.
USC defensive end Luke Wafle was voted Freshman of the Week for his five tackles, including four solo stops, a career-high 2.0 TFL and one sack.
The 2026 Discover Big Ten Championship Game will be played on Saturday, December 5, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and will be broadcast by FOX. The winner will represent the conference as the Automatic Qualifier (AQ) to the College Football Playoff.
Abbott and the Big Ten Conference kicked off Season 3 of the We Give Blood drive on August 26. Donations are tracked in real-time until December 4. The school with the most donations at the end will be announced on December 5 at the 2026 Discover Big Ten Championship Game. Every donation can help save up to three lives — and someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds. The leaderboard can be found on page 6.
Indiana captured its first national title last season with a 27-21 victory over Miami (Fla.) in the 2026 College Football Playoff at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla. The Hoosiers capped off the season as the only team in college football history to go 16-0.
The Big Ten has claimed three consecutive College Football Playoff championships by three different universities (Indiana 2026, Ohio State 2025, Michigan 2024).
With national championships in football and men’s and women’s basketball, the Big Ten became the second conference to sweep football and basketball national titles since 1981-82. The Big Ten is the only conference to achieve the feat with three different schools.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS
OREGON MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH DANA ALTMAN ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT
Longtime Oregon Ducks men’s basketball coach Dana Altman is retiring effective immediately, the school announced on Wednesday.
Altman, 68, took over ahead of the 2010-11 season and is the winningest coach in Oregon history with a 382-182 record. The Ducks made nine NCAA Tournament appearances over that span, including a Final Four berth in 2017.
Oregon also won four Pac-12 regular season titles and four Pac-12 tournament titles during his tenure.
Over the course of his 37-year career as a head coach, Altman’s record is 792-425. Before he came to Eugene, Altman was the head coach at Creighton for 16 years.
“I have had to make two really tough decisions in my coaching career,” said Altman. “The first was leaving Creighton, a place my family and I dearly loved, to come to Oregon. This is the second,” Altman said in a statement. “I’ve loved every minute of coaching here, and stepping away is difficult and truly painful. I love coaching, it’s what I know best and what I’ve been fortunate enough to do for almost five decades. I’m going to miss my coaches, my players and our incredible fans more than I can express. But I know this is the right thing to do at this time.”
Oregon will begin the national search for Altman’s successor after the season. Assistant coach Tony Stubblefield will coach the Ducks for the 2026-27 season.
The Ducks struggled last season, going 12-20, and the program lost nine players to the transfer portal and three to graduation in the offseason.
Stubblefield has spent two stints as an assistant to Altman at Oregon. He left to become head coach at DePaul from 2021-24 before returning to the Ducks.
“Winning 382 games over 16 years, including making nine NCAA Tournaments and a Final Four, is an incredible track record. But the record book tells only part of the story,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullins said. “Dana and Reva have given so much of themselves to this university and to the young men who played for him, and we thank him for all his contributions to Oregon student-athletes, the game of basketball, and the University of Oregon.”

NHL NEWS
ISLANDERS DEFENSEMAN ALEXANDER ROMANOV IS OUT 6-8 MONTHS WITH A TORN ACL IN HIS RIGHT KNEE
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov has a torn ACL in his right knee and is expected to be out 6-8 months, the team announced Wednesday.
Romanov, 26, is set to have surgery after getting injured Tuesday night in a 5-2 loss at the Rangers. He got tangled up with Mika Zibanejad during the third period and did not play the final 12 minutes.
It is the second consecutive season Romanov has been sidelined by a long-term injury. A shoulder injury from a hit by Dallas’ Mikko Rantanen last November caused Romanov to miss the final five months.
Counting three games this fall, Romanov has skated in a total of 18 since signing an eight-year, $50 million contract in the summer of 2025.

NHL ROUNDUP: LEON DRAISAITL LOGS 4 ASSISTS AS OILERS STORM PAST DUCKS
Leon Draisaitl had four assists to lead a huge second period in the Edmonton Oilers’ 5-2 road win over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.
Down 2-0 at the first intermission, Edmonton stormed back with five unanswered goals in the second frame. It was another strong offensive showing for the 3-0-1 Oilers, who have 22 goals in their first four games of the season.
Evan Bouchard had two goals and an assist, and Connor McDavid produced a goal and two assists. Bouchard leads the NHL with six goals, while McDavid tops the league in assists (nine) and points (12). Kasperi Kapanen and Vasily Podkolzin scored, and Devon Levi made 29 saves.
Beckett Sennecke scored two power-play goals for the Ducks, who fell short after winning their previous two games this season. Leo Carlsson had two assists. Lukas Dostal allowed five goals on 17 shots over two periods of action.
Jets 3, Avalanche 2
Kyle Connor scored twice, including the game-winner with a minute left in regulation, as Winnipeg rallied to beat visiting Colorado.
Cole Perfetti also tallied for the Jets, who have won three straight and have earned points in all four games. Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele and Dylan Samberg posted two assists each while Stuart Skinner stopped 32 shots.
Jaden Schwartz and Fedor Svechkov finished with a goal and an assist each for the Avalanche, who lost for the first time in three games this season. Mackenzie Blackwood made 16 saves.
Capitals 5, Penguins 3
Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists to lead host Washington to a win over Pittsburgh.
It was the 76th regular-season meeting and 101st overall matchup of all-time goal leader Alex Ovechkin, 41, who announced on Monday this would be his final season, and Sidney Crosby, 39. Neither figured in the scoring. Ovechkin was playing his first game after his announcement.
Pierre-Luc Dubois added a goal and an assist and Anthony Beauvillier, Alex Tuch and Ryan Leonard scored for the Capitals in their home opener following a 1-1-0 road start. Bryan Rust, making his season debut after being activated from injured reserve, Tommy Novak and Nick Robertson got goals for the Penguins, who lost their second straight.

COLTS FOOTBALL
COLTS ADD VETERAN DE CARL LAWSON TO PRACTICE SQUAD
The Indianapolis Colts signed veteran defensive end Carl Lawson to the practice squad and released tight end Kenny Fletcher Jr. on Wednesday.
Lawson, 31, has played in 90 games (34 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals (2017-20), New York Jets (2022-23), Dallas Cowboys (2024) and Baltimore Ravens (2025).
A fourth-round pick by Cincinnati in 2017, Lawson has accumulated 135 tackles, 122 quarterback hits, 32 sacks and four forced fumbles.
Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo held the same position with the Bengals when Lawson was on the team in 2019 and 2020.
The Colts (2-2) enter Sunday’s road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2) ranked 31st in total defense, allowing 423.8 yards per game.
Fletcher, 22, was undrafted out of Rutgers in April and signed with the Colts’ practice squad on Sept. 8 after going through training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

COLTS OWNER CARLIE IRSAY-GORDON DEFENDS PRESENCE ON SIDELINE
Indianapolis Colts principal owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon is tuning out the noise from critics questioning her presence on the sideline during game days.
Irsay-Gordon found herself in the spotlight after television cameras captured her approaching a coach and asking questions during Sunday’s 30-13 victory over the Washington Commanders in London.
While some have been outspoken about her presence on the sideline, she contends that she’s trying to listen to what matters.
“I like to say on a good day I have like a fifth-grade reading level understanding of the game and just the basic concepts of what we’re trying to do, depending on the week and depending on our opponent and depending on the situation,” Irsay-Gordon told Front Office Sports Tonight on Monday in London.
“But I think, then, it just helps to understand and to ask questions because I think one of the things, in my opinion, like being a good leader is about listening, really to understand. And I think that’s what the best teams do.”
Irsay-Gordon, 45, has been actively involved in various front office roles with the Colts. She transitioned to principal owner in the succession plan put in place by her father, late owner and CEO Jim Irsay, prior to his death on May 21, 2025.
Irsay-Gordon served as an intern for the Colts and is a member of multiple league committees. She attended owners meetings and tended to official league business at her father’s side — and independently on behalf of ownership — since 2004.
She and her siblings — Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson — were named as vice chairs/co-owners of the Colts in 2012.
###################
The Colts on Wednesday opened tight end Will Mallory’s 21-day window to return from injured reserve, meaning Mallory can begin participating in practice and can be activated off injured reserve at any point in the next three weeks.
Mallory, who was placed on injured reserve in late August with a thumb injury, had an impressive training camp and productive preseason. The fourth-year tight end caught six passes for 80 yards in the Colts’ preseason opener against the New England Patriots before sustaining the thumb injury.
Head coach Shane Steichen said the Colts would spend this week evaluating where Mallory is before making a decision on whether or not he could come off injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium.
“We’ll see how the week goes,” Steichen said. “It’s been a while since he’s been practicing, so we’ll get him out there today, get him running around and then we’ll go from there.”
Mallory was listed as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen (groin, rest) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday after missing last week’s win over the Washington Commanders with the injury he sustained during practice last Thursday.
Center Tanor Bortolini (ankle), linebacker Jaylon Carlies (ribs), linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee), wide receiver Ashton Dulin (hamstring) and defensive end Arden Key (hamstring) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Steichen said Monday, Key will miss “some time” with the injury he sustained in Week 4.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen begins with an injury update on tight end Will Mallory, who will be returning to practice this week after a four-week stint on IR. Steichen then dives into the Week 5 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and what issues their defense can pose. Steichen also breaks down what the Colts have to do against a defense that is second in the league in takeaways, which is an area the Colts offense has struggled with. Finally, Steichen discusses facing former Colts receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and emphasizes the immense respect he has for Pittman.

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones dives into his recent turnover struggles, and how he’s working in practices this week to correct them. Jones also shares how past Colts games against the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the rear view mirror now for everyone in the building, and why they leave previous results in the past. Finally, Jones discusses how the Colts can gain more yards per play, especially with deep threat Alec Pierce sidelined.

Cornerback Sauce Gardner takes accountability for his mistakes in the Colts’ 30-13 win over the Washington Commanders, and how he’s going to work each day this week to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen the rest of the season. Gardner says he was disappointed in himself, especially in the run game and says that performance won’t happen again. Tight end Tyler Warren shares how it’ll feel seeing former teammate Michael Pittman Jr. in a Steelers uniform Sunday and also discusses his relationship with Steelers tight end, and fellow Penn State alum, Pat Freiermuth.

INDIANA PACERS
The Pacers tipped off the preseason on Wednesday night in a special place for star guard Tyrese Haliburton, taking on the Minnesota Timberwolves on the campus of his alma mater, Iowa State.
Back on his college campus and back on the court for a competitive game for the first time in 16 months, Haliburton donned a special jersey with his college number, 22, before the game and took the mic to address the crowd, thanking the Iowa State community for its support and both the Pacers and Timberwolves organizations for agreeing to play an exhibition in Ames.
The Pacers ultimately prevailed 123-112. Indiana’s starters only played the first half and Minnesota’s starters exited early in the third quarter. It was the first preseason game for the Blue & Gold and the second for the Timberwolves, who won at Milwaukee on Monday.
Haliburton played 16 minutes in his first NBA action since he tore his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. The All-Star guard tallied seven points on 3-of-8 shooting and dished out six assists while only committing one turnover.
“Probably will be the loudest preseason game I’m ever a part of,” Haliburton said. “I had a lot of fun. A lot of special memories I made here, so that just adds to it.”
Aaron Nesmith led Indiana with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting (4-of-6 from 3-point range) in just 15 minutes. Reserve center Jay Huff scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Ben Sheppard added 13 points and four rebounds.
“I thought we played pretty well today,” Nesmith told DAZN’s Jeremiah Johnson after the game. “Flew around, moved the ball, played together. It was a good first game.”
Minnesota jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday thanks to a 10-0 run, but the Pacers stormed back later in the opening frame. The Blue & Gold reeled off 15 unanswered points and outscored the Timberwolves 20-7 over the final 4:27 of the first quarter to take a 32-27 lead.
Obi Toppin scored eight points off the bench while Pascal Siakam added six points and two assists in the first quarter.
Nesmith had it going in the second quarter, tallying 14 points in the frame. And Haliburton got into the act late in the half, knocking down a pair of shots in the closing minute.
But Minnesota made 12 3-pointers in the first half to take a 65-61 lead into the intermission.
The Pacers’ starters didn’t see the floor after halftime, as head coach Rick Carlisle went deep into his bench in Indiana’s first preseason contest.
Huff scored 14 points in the third quarter to help Indiana surge back ahead and take a 99-91 lead into the fourth. The Pacers remained in front for the remainder of the night.
Siakam and Toppin finished with 10 points apiece for Indiana. Fourth-year forward Jarace Walker had seven points and 10 assists.
All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 19 points, going 4-for-5 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Jaden McDaniels scored 16 points, while LaMelo Ball added 14 points and seven assists.
The Pacers will return to Indianapolis to host Atlanta at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday. Indiana then will travel to Oklahoma City and host Milwaukee next week to wrap up preseason play. The Pacers open the regular season in New Orleans on Oct. 21.
Inside the Numbers
Indiana shot 53.3 percent from the field and 17-for-32 (53.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Nesmith scored 14 of his 19 points in the second quarter, while Huff scored 14 of his 16 in the third quarter.
Walker’s 10 assists would have been a new career high if Wednesday’s game were a regular season contest. His previous best is eight assists at Brooklyn on April 9 of last season.
Walker also had the best plus/minus of any player. The Pacers were +18 in Walker’s 28 minutes of action.
Both teams had 20 turnovers in Wednesday’s contest. Indiana scored 28 points off of the Timberwolves’ turnovers, while Minnesota scored 22 off the Pacers’ giveaways.
You Can Quote Me On That
“What an atmosphere. For a preseason game — the whole way through it felt like an NBA playoff game with the environment. Hats off to the Iowa State students. Unbelievable showing.” — Carlisle on the environment
“I thought Tyrese did great. You’ve got to remember, this has been what, 16 months. All that considered, it’s not the easiest thing coming back to your alma mater in front of a full house after all that time. But I thought he did great considering everything.” — Carlisle on Haliburton’s performance
“Walker had a very impactful game. He was the biggest plus on the team…That was great to see.” — Carlisle on Walker
“I feel like I was playing super fast. As time goes on and I slow down, I feel like me and Zu’s pick-and-roll game will be even better.” — Haliburton on his developing partnership with center Ivica Zubac
Stat of the Night
With Haliburton back on the court, the Pacers shared the ball at an elite rate. Indiana had 39 assists on 48 field goals on Wednesday. Indiana only had more than 39 assists in two of 82 games last season.
Noteworthy
The Pacers had three players inactive for Wednesday’s preseason opener. Third-year forward Johnny Furphy is still rehabbing a torn ACL, while center Larry Nance Jr. (hamstring) and guard T.J. McConnell (undisclosed) are dealing with more minor injuries.

PURDUE FOOTBALL
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following a big conference road win at Illinois, Purdue Football returns home to host Minnesota for the annual Hammer Down Cancer game under the lights of Ross-Ade Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on BTN.
QUICK HITS
The Boilermakers took down rival Illinois 24-17, their eighth victory in the past 11 meetings of the series, to bring the Cannon Trophy home to West Lafayette.
Jeff Zgonina (1989-92), the 1992 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the program’s all-time leader in tackles-for-loss (72.0), will serve as Purdue’s honorary captain for the game.
Saturday’s matchup marks the first Big Ten home game of the season for Purdue, the program’s latest conference home opener since 2016 (not including the 2020 season shortened due to COVID-19).
Minnesota transfer Fame Ijeboi leads the Purdue rushing attack, ranking second in the Big Ten and ninth nationally with six rushing touchdowns.
The Boilermakers are outscoring opponents 40-17 in the third quarter this season.
The Purdue offense averages 306.6 passing yards per game, which ranks 16th in the country. Completing 71.3 percent of passes, the Boilermakers rank third in the Big Ten and 13th nationally.
Purdue’s three losses have been to opponents with a combined record of 13-1 (Notre Dame: 5-0, UCLA: 4-0, Wake Forest: 4-1).
Defensive coordinator Kevin Kane spent the 2025 season as the nickel and outside linebackers coach at Minnesota.
Purdue is the only team in the Big Ten to have two players ranked in the conference’s Top 10 in receptions per game. Xavier Townsend (5.6) ranks seventh, while Asaad Waseem is ninth (5.4). The duo has combined for 760 receiving yards this season (Waseem – 453, Townsend – 307).
Jacobo Echeverria Lozano leads the Big Ten and ranks third in the country with 11 made field goals, the second most by a freshman kicker in program history. He is 11-for-12 on the year with a long of 47 yards.
HONORARY CAPTAIN
Jeff Zgonina (1989-92), a three-time All-Big Ten defensive lineman for the Boilermakers before a 17-year career in the NFL, will serve as Purdue’s honorary captain for Saturday’s game.
Zgonina is still the program’s record holder in tackles-for-loss with 72.0 for his career.
He made 28.0 TFLs during the 1992 campaign, a single-season school record, on his way to being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
Over his 17 seasons in the NFL, Zgonina racked up 458 tackles in 219 games. He won Super Bowl XXXIV with the St. Louis Rams.
CANNON TROPHY RETURNS HOME
Thanks to a gritty performance on both sides of the ball, Purdue earned a hard-fought 24-17 win at rival Illinois to regain possession of the Cannon Trophy.
The Boilermakers held Illinois, who entered the contest averaging 34.0 points per game, to a season-low 17 points and 2-for-4 in red zone opportunities. Meanwhile, the Purdue offense was a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone.
Purdue beat Illinois for the eighth time in the past 11 matchups to improve to 1-1 in Big Ten play.
Asaad Waseem caught three passes for a team-high 98 yards. Chauncey Magwood added four catches for 54 yards, including a 31-yard reception to set Purdue up at the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter as the Boilermakers led 16-10 with under five minutes to go.
TOUCHDOWN HARRIS, TOUCHDOWN HARRIS
Antonio Harris and Tra’Mar Harris both found the end zone to help Purdue knock off Illinois and bring the Cannon Trophy back to West Lafayette.
Midway through the second quarter, Tra’Mar Harris made a spectacular back shoulder grab for 19 yards. Six plays later, Ryan Browne found Harris for a 21-yard strike in the end zone and their second touchdown connection of the season.
Antonio Harris provided a key fourth quarter touchdown to put the Boilermakers up by two scores. His 1-yard rush out of the wildcat formation gave Purdue a 24-10 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
PASS PROTECTION ON POINT
Purdue’s offensive line allowed zero sacks and zero quarterback hits, according to PFF, in a victory that brought the Cannon Trophy back to West Lafayette.
Marques Easley led the group with an 85.6 pass blocking grade. He graded as the 12th-best Power Four guard in pass protection during Week 5 (minimum 25 pass blocking snaps).
Easley’s pass blocking performance comes after he recorded an 80.1 grade against Notre Dame and 82.3 against UCLA. His 80.0 season grade is ninth by a Big Ten guard with at least 125 pass blocking snaps.
Boaz Stanley graded at 83.2 in pass blocking for his highest rating at the Power Four level. He topped the rating once at Troy in 2024 when he graded at 86.8 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
True freshman Rico Schrieber made his first collegiate start at right tackle to help blank Illinois’ pass rush.
B1G TIME PASSER
Ryan Browne has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football, ranking in the Top 20 in passing yards (14th-1,390), completions (15th-22.0 per game) and completion percentage (19th-70.5%). He cracks the Top 3 in the Big Ten in all three categories.
He is just one of three quarterbacks in the nation (Darian Mensah – Miami, Julian Sayin – Ohio State) with at least 1,300 yards passing, a completion percentage over 70 percent and one or fewer interceptions this season.
Throwing only one interception on the year, Browne is one of three Purdue quarterbacks over the past 30 years to toss just one or fewer interceptions through the first five games of a season (Kyle Orton – 2003, David Blough – 2018).
Surpassing 300 passing yards in each of the first three contests, Browne joined Jim Everett (1985, twice), Drew Brees (1998, 1999), Kyle Orton (2004), Curtis Painter (2007), David Blough (2018) and Aidan O’Connell (2021, 2022) as the only Purdue quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in three straight games.
Browne has six 300-yard passing games for his career, tied with Scott Campbell (1980-83) for eighth on the all-time charts.
HE’S YA BOY, IJEBOI
Fame Ijeboi has made an immediate impact for Purdue after transferring from Minnesota, becoming one of the leaders on the offensive side of the ball.
With 354 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the year, he ranks second in the Big Ten and ranks ninth nationally in rushing touchdowns.
Ijeboi joined Kory Sheets (8 in 2006, 6 in 2008) as the only Boilermakers with six or more rushing scores through the opening three weeks of a season since 1995.
Against Wake Forest, Ijeboi finished with 114 rushing yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns, all career highs. Ijeboi also added six receptions for 42 yards. Finding the end zone three times, he became the first Boilermaker with three rushing touchdowns in a game since D.J. Knox helped Purdue knock off No. 2 Ohio State in the famous Tyler Trent Game (Oct. 20, 2018).
In his first game as a Boilermaker, Ijeboi racked up 87 yards and a touchdown while averaging a staggering 7.9 yards per carry to help Purdue roll past Indiana State.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL
FOCUSED FAISON THRIVING IN NO. 3 NOTRE DAME’S HIGH-SCORING OFFENSE AFTER GIVING UP LACROSSE
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Jordan Faison came to Notre Dame as one of the nation’s top lacrosse recruits.
Football was more of an afterthought for the prep quarterback who played in a Wing-T offense.
Now the roles are reversed. Once content with walking on to the football team, Faison gave up lacrosse so he could become a prime target on a national championship contender.
“I felt better prepared,” Faison said when asked about his first five games since walking away from lacrosse. “Going through the spring and then ultimately fall camp (with football), I can kind of tell there was a difference in the little break I gave my body, and then ultimately now.”
The third-ranked Irish (5-0) see a difference, too. Faison leads the Fighting Irish with 25 catches, 371 receiving yards and four touchdown receptions this season, emerging as a prime target on an offense averaging 41.2 points a game and a team that has won 15 straight, all by 10 or more points.
Notre Dame’s next test comes Saturday against another longtime rival, Stanford (2-3).
And things could not be going any better for the 5-foot-11, fourth-year receiver. He caught a career-high eight passes for 132 yards in the rain at North Carolina last weekend.
“I’m feeling great,” Faison said. “That’s also a testament to our support staff, training staff who take care of us, and then us taking care of our own bodies as well.”
Faison’s journey to this point hasn’t been easy or traditional.
After helping Notre Dame win the 2024 lacrosse national championship as a freshman, he had to learn how to play in more conventional offense as he continued playing both sports. Then last spring, he decided to make football his sole priority, and everything changed.
“I didn’t really know much about receivers my early (college) years,” he said. “Seeing how far I’ve come is definitely huge. From little things, from footwork and techniques to understanding defenses, understanding offense, looking back and seeing how far I’ve come is pretty cool.”
What sets Faison apart from other receivers? Coach Marcus Freeman believes it’s Faison’s ability to make moves at full throttle.
“I think it’s the speed in which he runs his routes, the precision of when he makes his cuts, the timing with the quarterback getting him the ball,” Freeman said. “He can attack you in many different ways through quickness or overall just straight-line speed. I think all those things contribute to him finding ways to get open and (gain) the confidence (quarterback C.J. Carr) has in him being open to throwing the ball.”
Notre Dame needed Faison to take a jump after losing its top two running backs, Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, in the first round of April’s NFL draft.
So Faison made a commitment to spend more time on football. The result is a chemistry with Carr that has reached another level.
“There’s not a time I can remember that we were not on the same page,” Faison said. “(Defenses) are definitely just throwing a bunch of different looks at us, trying to confuse us, trying to hide things. So we’ve definitely got to dive in during the week, studying game plans and studying defenses and understanding tendencies and what they’re going to do.”
Even though Faison has more time for football now with lacrosse out of the picture, he insists he hasn’t changed his approach to a sport that could soon become a career.
“We’re all going to go out there and perform,” Faison said. “Coach is going to call plays. We’re going to run them, it’s beat the guy in front of you. That goes for all the guys on offense. Win your one-on-ones, and it obviously will (be enough to) win the game.”

IU INDY MEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s soccer team earned a much needed result as the Jaguars played Robert Morris to a 1-1 draw at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on an unseasonably warm Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 7). The Jaguars yielded an early goal, but controlled much of the attack for the duration of the match, ultimately leading to a penalty kick attempt in the 80th minute. Senior Jose Antonio Herrera cashed in on the opportunity for his team-high fifth goal of the season to help secure the draw.
The point was a welcome result for the Jaguars, snapping a five-game losing skid in Horizon League play.
“The next step is just being hungry. We’ve worked on it all week, having a desire to make those runs when times get difficult,” head coach Keegan Boom said. “It’s a hot day today. I thought the boys did a really good job on executing moments wherever they’re tired, and it’s the most difficult part of the game. Continuing that, maintaining our fitness and that desire to go and win a game on the box.”
An errant clearance in the 14th minute helped RMU’s Riley Cotton get free for his third tally of the season, giving the visiting Colonials (4-4-4, 1-1-3 HL) a quick 1-0 lead. Both teams were pretty punchless otherwise in the first half as Cotton had a quality chance hit the left post in the 43rd minute and IU Indy (3-6-2, 0-5-1 HL) freshman Thomas Weinrich got in behind the RMU defense in the 33rd minute, but fired high of target. Herrera closed the first half with a long distance blast in the final minute that was saved by RMU keeper Josh Lane for a corner kick. Herrera hit a harmless shot off target on the ensuing corner.
The Jaguars were the more aggressive team in the second half, leading to a 15-6 shot advantage and 7-2 margin in shots on goal.
The hosts finally tallied, beginning with a Weinrich tester on frame off a brilliant Jayden Quezada feed. Lane stopped the initial attempt, but the ball caromed perilously at the six-yard box and RMU’s Miguel Dominguez was called for a foul while trying to clear the loose ball. Herrera cashed in with just more than 10 minutes remaining to level the match. While the Jaguars stayed on the attack, largely behind Weinrich and Luke Gonda on the left side, they were unable to find a go-ahead goal late.
The best offensive chance came in the 87th minute when Santiago Sanchez had his corner kick recycled back to his side of the field and his rip from the left flank was cleared away.
Herrera, Sanchez and Weinrich all attempted a game-high three shots while Field recorded one save. The six shots allowed by the IU Indy defense were the fewest by an opponent this season.
The Jaguars won’t play again until a non-conference match at Bellarmine on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m.

The depth of Indiana State’s roster was evident with 10 athletes earning MVC First Team honors, while an additional 10 athletes received recognition on the Honorable Mention squad.
Among the returners highlighting the roster from the First Team includes Anna Asplund, Grace Cummings, Kaleigh Kelley, Jecza Lopez, Maria Saldana Riebeling, and Sahara Visscher. Erin Cummins, Gemma Dilks, and Addison Johnson all return after recognition on the Honorable Mention squad.
Illinois State opened the 2026-27 regular season with a dual meet win over Quincy, claiming the 187-69 victory at Horton Pool. The Redbirds collected 12 individual event wins and added victories in both relay events.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL
Valparaiso (9-7, 1-3 MVC)
Thursday, Oct. 8 – Evansville (4-12, 1-3 MVC) – 6 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 9 – Murray State (2-14, 0-4 MVC) – 6 p.m.
Next Up For Valpo Volleyball: The Valpo volleyball team closes out a stretch in which it plays four out of five matches at home with two more matches at the ARC this week, hosting Evansville for a rare Thursday evening affair before taking on Murray State Friday evening.
Previously: Valpo earned its first MVC win of the year last Wednesday with a 3-1 win over UIC, but then succumbed in five sets on Friday at Southern Illinois after winning the first two sets.
Looking Ahead: After facing UNI and Drake only once apiece last season, the Beacons will make the Iowa road swing for the first time since 2024 Oct. 16-17.
Following the Beacons: Both of this week’s matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ as part of The Valley on ESPN. Live stats will also be available via ValpoAthletics.com.
Series History: Evansville – Valpo holds an 18-14 lead in the all-time series, but has dominated since joining the MVC in 2017, winning 13 of 17 matchups in that time. Notably, the Beacons won all four meetings in 2021 – two regular season, one in the first round of the MVC Tournament, and one in the quarterfinals of the NIVC. In last year’s only meeting, Valpo came away victorious in straight sets at Evansville.
Murray State – Valpo owns a 10-2 lead in the all-time series versus the Racers, including a 6-2 mark since Murray State joined the MVC. Two of those wins for the Beacons came last season, as they earned a four-set win at the ARC and a sweep in Murray.
Scouting the Opposition: Evansville – The Purple Aces come into Thursday’s meeting with a 4-12 overall record this year and sit at 1-3 in MVC play, splitting last weekend with a four-set win at Murray State and a three-set loss at Belmont. Evansville has two of the top four in the MVC in terms of hitting percentage (Ryan Scheu, 3rd, .362; McKenzie Laubach, 4th, .359), while Carsyn Kelley ranks third in the Valley with 8.74 assists/set.
Murray State – The Racers sit at 2-14 overall and are 0-4 in MVC play, with a four-set defeat versus Evansville and a five-set loss to Indiana State last weekend. Anne Makowski ranks sixth among MVC players in kills/set (3.21) and Ada Tamturk ranks sixth in digs/set (3.71).
Hoosier State Crown: Thursday’s match versus Evansville is the first of the season for the Beacons against a fellow program from Indiana, and kicks off the unofficial MVC Hoosier State crown series. Valpo has dominated the series against both Evansville and Indiana State since joining the Valley, posting the best record against the other two Indiana-based programs six times in the nine seasons it has been in the conference, including each of the last three years. UE and INS have posted the best record once apiece in that span, while all three teams were 2-2 against each other in the spring of 2021. Valpo is 24-8 against UE and INS since joining the Valley.
Play That Ace: This year’s Valpo squad has been among the best in program history in terms of service aces. The Beacons currently rank 34th nationally with 1.91 aces/set, a mark which is on pace to easily smash the program’s best average in the 25-point era, which sits at 1.46 aces/set. In fact, it would better the program’s best from the 30-point era as well (1.87 aces/set). Already this season, three individual performances and three team performances have cracked the single match top-five charts for aces.
Putting Up the Block: Last Saturday’s match at Southern Illinois featured the Beacons’ top blocking performance of the season, as they racked up 14 team blocks. Leading the way was junior Jessica Pickett, who racked up nine rejections – one shy of her career best and one away from her first career double-double. Ava Helming tied her career high with seven blocks, Maddie Steele was one off her season best with five and Olivia Wagner surpassed her career best with four.
Efficient Hitting: For the second time this season, Valpo had a match which cracked the program’s top-five charts in the 25-point era for hitting percentage, as the Beacons hit at a .299 clip in the home match against Illinois State – fourth-best in a five-set match in this era. Leading the way was Maggie Uhwat, who posted a career-best 17 kills while hitting .577 – good for fourth in a five-set match on the program’s individual single-match chart. Earlier this year, Valpo hit .320 in a four-set win over Oakland, which ranks fourth for a four-set match in this era, and also had 70 kills in that match – second-most in a four-set match in this era.
One-Two Punch: The combination of junior outside Jordyn Gove and junior right side Ava Helming has consistently paced the Beacons’ attack this year. Helming currently ranks third in the MVC with 3.71 kills/set, with Gove close behind her in fifth with 3.35 kills/set. Gove, who entered the season with a career high of 16 kills, has surpassed 20 kills four times already this season, including two matches with 22 kills. Meanwhile, Helming also has four matches with at least 20 kills, including a career-best 28 kills against Cleveland State – a mark which ties the most by a Valpo player in the 25-point era.
Player of the Week: Helming was named the MVC Player of the Week Sept. 14 following a weekend in northeastern Ohio where she averaged an MVC-best 4.62 kills/set on .261 hitting, highlighted by her career-high 28-kill effort in the win over Cleveland State. It is the third MVC Player of the Week honor of Helming’s career, as she had one apiece as well in each of her first two seasons.
Capturing Crowns: Part of the volleyball program’s winning tradition has been a penchant for capturing tournament titles, and that continued in 2026, as the Beacons claimed the Chattanooga Classic on opening weekend and the WNY Invitational in the season’s fourth weekend. Valpo has won 38 in-season tournament titles since the start of the 2002 campaign. The team has won at least one tournament in 19 of those 25 seasons, and multiple tournaments 12 times. Those tournament titles have come in 14 different states.
All-Tournament Honors: The Beacons had four players receive All-Tournament Team accolades over their two tournaments which presented an All-Tournament Team:
Valpo – Jordyn Gove
Chattanooga – Gove (MVP), Ava Helming, Maggie Uhwat

UINDY MEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men’s soccer team picked up another road win in GLVC play with a 2-1 win over the University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars.
Offense was a constant in the matchup with a dominant showing by the Greyhounds, but the Prairie Stars were the first team to find a shot as they challenged Rick Lammerts in the third minute which was saved before the Greyhound offense took over.
In the matchup the Greyhounds found their most shots, 20, and shots on goal, 12, in over a year. The 20 shots were the most since their matchup against UIS on Oct. 25, 2024 and their 12 shots on goal were the most since Sept. 20, 2024 against Quincy.
The first Hound to find a shot was Hugo Paturel who challenged the hosts a minute after their attempt on goal.
The high-flying offense synonymous with Gabe Hall led teams showed itself early with corner kicks, shots and offsides all following the shot by Paturel, continuing to pressure the backline of UIS.
The first half saw eight shots from the Greyhounds, three of which were on goal, but the two sides remained even entering half.
The second half saw a similar start with the Hounds continually knocking on the proverbial door of the Prairie Stars until the 57th minute when the Greyhounds sent in their first goal of the game.
The opening goal came thanks to a beautifully threaded through ball by Sam Siegel that slid along the right wing to Shayne Abrams who then sprinted past the UIS backline and placed the goal around the keeper to take the lead.
The Greyhounds continued to ramp up the pressure on the Prairie Stars as they continued to rain in shots until Hugo Paturel found the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Paturel’s goal swept across the face of the goal after being set up by Owen Hardy’s third assist of the season.
The Prairie Stars looked to come back with a goal in the 87th minute, but it was too little too late as the Greyhounds came out with the 2-1 win.
The Hounds will return home Sunday to take on the Lincoln University Tigers Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m.

The two teams traded possession early before the Prairie Stars were the first to test the opposing defense as they found a shot on goal, which was saved by Samarah Arendson in the sixth minute. Immediately after the save the Greyhounds showed tough defense, defending two corner kicks in the seventh minute.
The Greyhounds continued to be tested with shots on corners from the hosting Prairie Stars until Mia Bajic sent the first shot on target for the Hounds in the 21st minute.
The Hounds then found more control of possession as the first half progressed, inching their way down field, but still relying on the defense to keep the game even until the 45th minute.
With 13 seconds left in the first half Jaci Merchant lifted a picture perfect shot from outside the box that ended soaring over the UIS keeper’s head and with her first collegiate goal giving UIndy a 1-0 lead entering half.
When the second half began the Prairie Stars tied up the game with a goal in the opening two minutes.
After the goal, UIS continued to challenge the Greyhound defense, but Arendsen continued to add saves in her best start of her UIndy career. Arendsen’s 11 saves were the most by a Greyhound keeper this season and T-9th by a player in the GLVC this season.
Ella Higbie looked to give the Hounds back the lead with a shot in the 63rd minute, but it fell just off target.
Eventually the Prairie Stars found their first lead of the game, scoring in the 80th minute. Despite the efforts of UIndy and Emily DeWitt, who found the final shot of the game, the game came to a close 2-1.
The Greyhounds will return home Sunday, Oct. 11 at noon when they take on the Lincoln University Tigers.
