MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
BREWERS STUN DODGERS WITH BACK-TO-BACK HOMERS IN 7TH INNING AND RIDE 6-2 WIN TO 3-0 LEAD IN NLCS
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers hit the second-fewest home runs in baseball during the regular season, even as they topped the majors with 103 wins.
Maybe they were saving their biggest swings for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell launched back-to-back homers off Blake Snell in the seventh inning, and the Brewers beat the Dodgers 6-2 on Wednesday to build a 3-0 cushion in the National League Championship Series.
Jackson Chourio also went deep on the first pitch of the game to help the Brewers close within one win of their first NL pennant. Milwaukee was in the American League when the franchise reached its only World Series, a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982.
“Job’s not finished yet,” Mitchell said.
Game 4 is Thursday at Dodger Stadium, where the Brewers can become the first major league club to complete a postseason sweep after getting swept by that same opponent in the previous postseason.
Los Angeles took all four games against Milwaukee in the NLCS last year.
The Dodgers had just gone ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning before getting stunned by the Brewers in their three-run seventh. The loss pushed the two-time defending World Series champions to the brink of elimination.
“All three games we’ve played so far, and hopefully that continues, where just every time they score, we come back and score,” Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said. “That’s not easy to do in baseball.”
It was the fifth comeback victory in seven postseason games for the Brewers, who have never beaten Los Angeles in three previous playoff series.
The only other time the Dodgers trailed 3-0 in a best-of-seven postseason series, they were swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1966 World Series.
The lone team in big league history to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven postseason series was the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 AL Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
“We’ve won four in a row a number of times this year,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We’ve got to win tomorrow. That’s our only focus.”
Coming into the seventh, Snell had retired 14 batters in a row. But the first pitch of the game thrown by the two-time Cy Young Award winner was hit for a home run by Chourio, and his last pitch was Mitchell’s solo shot.
Andrew Vaughn drew a seven-pitch walk to open the seventh and was replaced by pinch-runner Christian Yelich. Bauers followed with a 412-foot drive to right field on the 11th pitch of his at-bat for a 3-2 lead as most of the players in Milwaukee’s dugout came onto the field to celebrate.
“I was looking for a fastball, and I didn’t want to miss it,” said Bauers, who had a team-leading 26 of Milwaukee’s 154 regular-season homers.
It was his latest relentless plate appearance, too, after Bauers drew a 12-pitch walk from Yoshinobu Yamamoto that helped the Brewers go ahead early in Game 2.
“I think what changed for me this year was I stopped caring about results,” Bauers said. “I started caring about competing. I started caring about being in the moment and getting out of my own way.”
Watching Bauers work over Snell was “super sick,” Mitchell said.
And then it was his turn.
Mitchell’s drive traveled 428 feet to right-center. That chased Snell, who hadn’t given up a home run in 46 1/3 innings this year entering the game. It was the first time in his career he served up back-to-back homers to left-handed hitters and only the second time he gave up multiple longballs to left-handed batters in one game.
Bauers and Mitchell became just the third pair of left-handed hitters with consecutive postseason home runs off the same left-handed pitcher. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper did it for Philadelphia against Atlanta reliever Dylan Lee in an NL Wild Card Series this year, and Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig connected for the New York Yankees off Bill Sherdel of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1928 World Series.
Milwaukee has five homers in the NLCS and eight this postseason.
Snell gave up four runs and four hits in six-plus innings. He struck out nine and walked two.
The Brewers extended their lead to 5-2 in the eighth on Justin Wrobleski’s wild pitch that scored Brice Turang, who reached on an infield single and advanced to third on William Contreras’ single. They added another run on Joey Ortiz’s two-strike RBI single in the ninth.
The offensively starved Dodgers took a 2-1 lead on Will Smith’s two-run double off reliever Abner Uribe in the sixth.
After rookie starter Robert Gasser pitched five shutout innings, Uribe entered and loaded the bases on walks to Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker and Shohei Ohtani. Smith, who was 1 for 25 in the playoffs, doubled off the left-center fence with one out for his first hit of the NLCS.
DL Hall took over from Uribe and stranded runners at second and third by striking out pinch-hitter Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman.
Hall allowed one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 in these playoffs. Trevor Megill got four outs for his second save of the series and fourth this postseason.
The Dodgers played from behind again after the 22-year-old Chourio connected for his third career leadoff homer in the postseason as fans were still heading to their seats.
After that, Mitchell walked and Cooper Pratt singled in the second before Snell retired 14 in a row — six on strikeouts — before getting hammered in the seventh.
The Dodgers had runners on base in all but three innings, but couldn’t get enough across. They have yet to homer in the NLCS and are 3 for 32 with runners in scoring position this postseason.
Ohtani was 1 for 2 with a walk while hitting sixth in the order, the lowest he’s batted since joining the Dodgers three years ago.

DODGERS DOWN 3-0 TO BREWERS IN NLCS AND MUST WIN 4 IN A ROW FOR CHANCE AT 3RD STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers, so used to winning year after year, find themselves in unfamiliar territory lately — on the brink of playoff elimination.
The two-time defending World Series champions are aiming to become the first National League team to win a third straight title and the first club to three-peat since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000.
But that seems increasingly unlikely.
The Dodgers are facing a 3-0 deficit against Milwaukee in the National League Championship Series after losing 6-2 on Wednesday. They’ll need to win four games in a row to advance, starting Thursday in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.
“It looks like we’re going to have to make a little more history along the way if we want to accomplish that,” third baseman Max Muncy said. “We still have the pitching staff to be able to do it. We just have to get some hits.”
Offense has been sparse in the postseason. The Dodgers are 3 for 32 with runners in scoring position overall and 1 for 14 against the Brewers. Los Angeles cranked out 204 homers in the regular season — seventh in MLB — but have none so far in the NLCS.
“It’s just this whole series they’ve outslugged us, outhit us,” manager Dave Roberts said. “We’ve got to get a lead and find a way to tack on.”
The Dodgers scored twice in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead in Game 3 before pinch-hitter Kiké Hernández came up with runners on second and third and one out. But he struck out swinging, and Tommy Edman took a called third strike to end the inning.
“That was the game right there,” Hernández said. “We need to put the ball in play. I struck out and gave Tommy a way harder job with two outs. I have had two of the biggest at-bats in the series for our team and I haven’t been able to come through. I just need to do my job.”
Tyler Glasnow is scheduled to pitch Thursday for the Dodgers, who are 44-42 in postseason elimination games. If they can find a way to win, they would host Game 5 on Friday.
“We’ve never been in this big of a hole,” Hernández said, “but we’ve had our backs against the wall plenty of times before, and we’ve come out of it. We’re just trying to do it one more time.”
Except none of the Dodgers’ hitters are doing much of anything. Kyle Tucker, who struggled mightily in the regular season, has been a bright spot. He’s batting .304 after going 1 for 3 on Wednesday.
But the top of the lineup — Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández — was a combined 1 for 11 in Game 3, when the Dodgers totaled five hits.
The deepest slumps involve four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani and catcher Will Smith. Ohtani was 1 for 2, raising his average to .182 a year after being MVP of the NLCS sweep against the Brewers. Smith was 1 for 4 with a two-run double, but his average is far south of the Mendoza Line at .074.
In Game 2, the Dodgers mustered just three hits in a 7-4 loss.
The only team in major league history to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven postseason series was the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who got a gutsy stolen base from Roberts to spark their comeback against the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series.
Roberts was asked if he might reminisce with his Dodgers players about that before Thursday’s game.
“I don’t think so. I think they’ve seen the documentary. They know it can happen,” he said.

RAYS AND GUARDIANS TO PLAY ALCS GAME 3 IN AFTERNOON TO BEAT RAIN. NLCS GAME ALSO MOVED UP
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians have a common opponent with the American League Championship Series shifting to Progressive Field for the next three games.
Mother Nature.
Game 3 in the best-of-seven series Thursday was changed to a 1 p.m. ET start because of the threat of rain in Cleveland during the evening. Major League Baseball moved up the start time five hours Wednesday to keep the series on schedule.
It might not be the only time weather throws both teams a curveball, either. Friday’s forecast calls for rain all day.
Game 4 on Friday remains scheduled to start at 6 p.m., and the first pitch of Game 5 on Saturday is slated for 8 p.m.
The ALCS is tied 1-all after the Rays’ 3-1 victory at home Tuesday night. Cleveland took the opener 7-3 on Monday.
“I think MLB did the right thing. They felt likelier that we were going to get rain in the mid-to-late afternoon tomorrow. So let’s move the game up and try to bank as many dry innings as possible. Coming off an off day probably helps a little bit,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday.
Tampa Bay flew into Cleveland after Tuesday night’s game. The Guardians elected to stay in Florida overnight before flying back Wednesday morning.
According to MLB Network, it will be the earliest start time for a League Championship Series game in the Eastern time zone since Game 5 of the 1988 NL Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets started at 12:20 p.m. at Shea Stadium.
There was a Monday matinee that year because Game 3 of the series was postponed due to rain, pushing everything back one day.
Tampa Bay will send right-hander Griffin Jax to the mound in Game 3. Jax (8-10, 3.52 ERA) struck out four and gave up one run in two innings of relief against the New York Yankees in Game 3 of their Division Series. It was his first relief appearance since April 21.
It will be Jax’s first postseason start. He also made four relief appearances with Minnesota during the 2023 postseason.
“It’s a big honor, one that I’ve been looking forward to for a really long time now that I’m in the rotation,” he said.
Jax — who has a six-pitch arsenal — ranked sixth among AL starters during the regular season with a 30.1% whiff rate. He said it helped watching how Rays starters Drew Rasmussen and Freddy Peralta approached the Guardians’ hitters during the first two games of the series.
“There’s definitely things I can watch and learn from the way Drew attacked them and then what Freddy did last night. So, a lot to watch and a lot that I’m going to go over some notes tonight, and stick to my game plan at the end of the day,” Jax said.
Jax will be tasked with trying to limit the second and third hitters in Cleveland’s lineup. José Ramírez has a .333 batting average during the postseason, including going 9 for 21 with two home runs and nine RBIs over the past five games.
Guardians rookie Chase DeLauter is 4 for 6 with a homer and two RBIs in the ALCS, and has a .346 batting average in the postseason.
Cleveland will go with Gavin Williams (14-8, 3.76 ERA), who led the American League in strikeouts this season. The right-hander tied a franchise postseason record with 12 strikeouts in Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Chicago White Sox in the deciding game of their ALDS.
Williams had a 1.54 ERA against the White Sox, allowing two runs and six hits with 24 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings. He also started Game 2 against Chicago and tossed an inning of relief in Game 4.
“They don’t strike out much. They’re going to put the ball in play. They’re going to put a lot of pressure on us. Just going to have to execute the best way I know how to,” Williams said about the Rays.
Jonny DeLuca is 4 for 8 with a home run during the ALCS and has a .333 batting average in the postseason.
Thursday’s NLCS start time also moved up
MLB also moved up the start of Game 4 of the NL Championship Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers for broadcast purposes. That game at Dodger Stadium will now start an hour earlier, at 5 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET). The Brewers lead that series 2-0.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 7: OHIO STATE-INDIANA AND NOTRE DAME-BYU AMONG SIX TOP 25 MATCHUPS
Week 7 of the college football season stacks up to be the best so far with six games pitting teams ranked in The Associated Press Top 25, including a top-five showdown and another in the top 10.
No. 4 Ohio State visits No. 5 Indiana in a meeting of the last two national champions. The winner of this Saturday matinee gains the inside track for a spot in the Big Ten championship game and also will get a bump in College Football Playoff seeding consideration.
At night, No. 2 Notre Dame plays at No. 8 BYU in the first top-10 game in LaVell Edwards Stadium history. This game has significant playoff implications because of its resume-boosting potential. Neither team has played a difficult schedule so far.
No. 16 Mississippi State goes to No. 22 LSU, and a Bulldogs win would all but douse LSU’s hopes of making the playoff in Lane Kiffin’s first season. No. 6 Alabama will be looking to bounce back from its home loss to now-No. 1 Georgia when it goes to No. 14 Tennessee.
The quarterback matchup is intriguing for No. 13 Missouri at No. 9 Mississippi. The Tigers’ Austin Simmons began last season as Mississippi’s starter and gave way to Trinidad Chambliss, who still holds the job in Oxford.
The other Top 25 game has No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 20 Houston in the Big 12. The Cowboys were horrid the last two years and now, with 91 newcomers and first-year coach Eric Morris, have become one of the feel-good stories of the season after losing to Tulsa and starting their current four-game win streak with an upset of Oregon.
Best game
No. 4 Ohio State (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) at No. 5 Indiana (6-0, 3-0), noon ET (Fox)
The Buckeyes have won four straight since their fourth-quarter meltdown at Texas. The defending national champion Hoosiers have won 22 straight after their fourth-quarter rally to win at Nebraska.
Ohio State was the reigning national champion and ranked No. 1 the last time the teams met. That was the Big Ten championship game last year, and Indiana’s 13-10 win was its first in 31 games in the series and it ended the Buckeyes’ 16-game win streak.
Lots of eyeballs will be on three of the best receivers in the country. Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has put up prodigious numbers, and Indiana has the nation’s top tandem in Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh.
Heisman Trophy watch
Preseason Heisman favorite CJ Carr of No. 2 Notre Dame has done nothing to hurt his candidacy through six games. He has 16 touchdown passes against one interception and is averaging 229 yards passing per game on 70% accuracy.
The problem is he’s played a middling schedule, and he has slipped behind Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith and Miami QB Darian Mensah, at least in the wagering markets. Both have put up phenomenal numbers. Carr has an opportunity to make a statement going against BYU’s top-10 defense.
BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has had to carry a heavier load since star RB LJ Martin got hurt against TCU on Oct. 3. Bachmeier passed for 329 yards and ran for 109 yards last week against Iowa State and is starting to enter the Heisman conversation. Like Carr, he gets the big stage, except Bachmeier will be going against what on paper is an even better defense.
Numbers to know
4 — Kicks or punts Vanderbilt has had blocked, most in the nation, after having none blocked the previous two seasons.
10 — Oregon State freshman Jesse Legree’s nation-leading receptions of 30-plus yards.
18 — Pittsburgh’s interceptions returned for touchdowns since 2020, most in the nation.
23 — Nebraska has held each of its first six opponents to this many points or fewer for the first time since 2010.
47.8% — Utah opponent pass completion rate, on track to be the lowest by a team since 2016.
106 — UTEP’s consecutive games since 2017 without its defense returning an interception for a touchdown, the longest streak in the country.
Under the radar
Northwestern (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) at Michigan State (2-4, 0-3), noon ET (Peacock)
It’s the Pat Fitzgerald Bowl. Fitzgerald bled Northwestern purple as a two-time consensus All-America linebacker during the halcyon days of the mid 1990s and for 17 as the program’s longest-tenured head coach.
He was fired shortly before fall camp opened in 2023 amid a hazing scandal. He filed a $130 million wrongful termination lawsuit, and the two sides settled last summer with Northwestern acknowledging it could not establish Fitzgerald was told by players about the hazing or that he directed or condoned it.
Fitzgerald restarted his college coaching career in December when Michigan State hired him. David Braun, who joined the Northwestern staff as defensive coordinator seven months before Fitzgerald’s firing, is now head coach and has the Wildcats out to their best start in six years.
Hot seat
Rutgers’ Greg Schiano was listed here five weeks ago on the heels of an embarrassing 37-21 season-opening home loss to UMass. Maryland’s Mike Locksley was here two weeks ago after a 51-point home loss to UCLA. Things haven’t gotten better for either team. The Scarlet Knights’ only win during a 1-4 start was against Howard. The Terrapins are 2-4 with wins over Hampton and UConn.
Locksley is the only coach on a hotter seat than Schiano, according to rankings by CoachesHotSeat.com and a host of other observers. Neither athletic department wants to pay a buyout and do a coaching search, but it appears imminent for one and probably both. Locksley would be owed $9.7 million and Schiano about $18 million, according to media reports.
Rutgers visits Maryland on Saturday. May the best coach win.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKS: OHIO STATE’S RYAN DAY IS AN OLD HAND WHEN IT COMES TO TOP-FIVE MATCHUPS
Ohio State coach Ryan Day should be getting used to these top-five matchups by now.
The No. 4 Buckeyes’ game at No. 5 Indiana on Saturday will be Day’s second top-five matchup this season and 13th since he took over as Urban Meyer’s successor in 2019. Only Georgia’s Kirby Smart has coached in more of these games over that span (14).
Indiana is still new to this. This weekend’s Big Ten showdown will be the first top-five matchup ever played at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
It will, however, be the Hoosiers’ fourth such game overall, and third against the Buckeyes, since coach Curt Cignetti began his incredible run in 2024. The first was a 38-15 road loss to the Buckeyes in his debut season. Last season, the Hoosiers beat Ohio State 13-10 in the Big Ten championship game and then Oregon 56-22 in a College Football Playoff semifinal.
Day is 5-8 in top-five matchups, according to Sportradar. He likely believes he should be 6-7 after his team blew a 20-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 24-23 loss to Texas last month. Eight of the 13 games were decided by seven points or less, including all four of the true road games.
The picks, with rankings and betting lines. All games are on Saturday:
Auburn at No. 1 Georgia (minus 20 1/2)
The Tigers have lost nine straight in Athens and haven’t beaten the Bulldogs anywhere since 2017. Georgia packs too powerful a punch, especially against Auburn’s shaky offensive line.
Pick: Georgia 42-21.
No. 2 Notre Dame (minus 10) at No. 8 BYU
BYU QB Bear Bachmeier has put the offense on his back since RB LJ Martin got injured. That will be too much for Bear to bear against the nation’s No. 1 defense.
Pick: Notre Dame 26-14.
Florida State at No. 3 Miami (minus 21)
The Seminoles surrendered 35 straight points against Louisville last week, and they don’t have enough to slow the roll of Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney and the rest of the Hurricanes.
Pick: Miami 44-19.
No. 4 Ohio State (minus 3 1/2) at No. 5 Indiana
The Buckeyes have been hankering for this one since the Hoosiers beat them in the Big Ten championship game on the way to the program’s first national championship. Indiana has lived on the edge against good teams, and this is where its 22-game win streak ends.
Pick: Ohio State 24-20.
No. 6 Alabama (minus 8 1/2) at No. 14 Tennessee
Was Tennessee QB Faizon Brandon injured or benched, and will he or George MacIntyre start against the Crimson Tide? Stay tuned.
Pick: Alabama 28-14.
Florida (plus 10 1/2) at No. 7 Texas
The Longhorns should have plenty of reasons to be motivated. There’s last week’s loss to Oklahoma, which bounced them from No. 1 in the rankings, and there is last year’s season-ruining loss at the Swamp.
Pick: Texas 26-17.
Arizona State at No. 10 Texas Tech (minus 14 1/2)
Texas Tech RB Quinten Joyner figures to get more work with the injured Cameron Dickey out. The Sun Devils upset Tech in Tempe last year.
Pick: Texas Tech 31-14.
No. 11 Utah (minus 15 1/2) at Colorado
Utah is on a roll. RB Wayshawn Parker is averaging better than 10 yards per carry over his last two games, and QB Devon Dampier led three straight long second-half TD drives to blow out Kansas.
Pick: Utah 35-10.
Wisconsin (plus 2 1/2) at No. 12 UCLA
The Bruins will be without injured QB Nico Iamaleava, and they’ll be going against the toughest defense they’ve seen so far.
Pick: Wisconsin 23-20.
No. 13 Missouri (plus 6) at No. 9 Mississippi
Much will be made of the Austin Simmons-Trinidad Chambliss storyline, but here’s the key matchup: Missouri RB Jamal Roberts, coming off back-to-back 200-yard rushing games, vs. the SEC’s worst run defense.
Pick: Missouri 33-28.
No. 15 Kentucky (plus 7) at Oklahoma
The Sooners hope to use their Red River Rivalry upset of Texas as a springboard, but it’s hard to pick against Will Stein and the Wildcats right now.
Pick: Kentucky 27-24.
No. 16 Mississippi State at No. 22 LSU (minus 14)
A healthy Kamario Taylor is the Bulldogs’ best chance for an upset. Taylor’s status is uncertain after he left the Oct. 3 game against Alabama with a foot injury.
Pick: LSU 31-14.
No. 18 Oklahoma State (plus 4 1/2) at No. 20 Houston
It’s Drew Mestemaker vs. Conner Weigman. An old-fashioned shootout is a possibility in the first Top 25 matchup hosted by Houston since 1990.
Pick: Oklahoma State 45-42.
No. 21 Wake Forest (minus 9 1/2) at California
Wake Forest heads to the West Coast with its first ranking since 2022. Demon Deacons QB Gio Lopez has had a hand in nine touchdowns the last two games.
Pick: Wake Forest 36-24.
Virginia (plus 9 1/2) at No. 24 SMU
Kevin Jennings is capable of causing all kinds of problems for Virginia’s defense, which struggles against quarterbacks who can throw on the run and take off if protection breaks down.
Pick: SMU 29-21.
Bye weeks: No. 17 Iowa, No. 19 Southern California, No. 23 Boise State.

BIG 12 HAS TWO SIGNIFICANT TOP 25 MATCHUPS: BYU HOSTS NOTRE DAME AND OKLAHOMA STATE IS AT HOUSTON
Things to watch this week in the Big 12 Conference:
Game of the week
No. 2 Notre Dame (6-0) at No. 8 BYU (5-0), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
It won’t count in the Big 12 standings, but this midseason matchup of undefeated teams, and the first two teams left out of the College Football Playoff last season, could have huge implications when this year’s 12-team CFP field is set in December.
BYU is hosting a top-10 game at LaVell Edwards Stadium for the first time. The Cougars are again without standout running back LJ Martin because of a lower-body injury. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for 329 yards and ran for 109 last week to beat Iowa State.
The Cougars were the Big 12 runner-up last season, when both their losses were to Texas Tech. Notre Dame has a 16-game winning streak and wants to leave no doubt about making the playoff this season. The Fighting Irish won 10 in a row last year after an 0-2 start with losses to top-16 teams by a combined four points.
The undercard
No. 18 Oklahoma State (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) at No. 20 Houston (5-1, 2-1), Saturday, 7:30 p.,m. ET (FOX)
The Cowboys didn’t win a Big 12 game in each of the past two seasons. They are now the league’s biggest surprise in coach Eric Morris’ debut. With Drew Mestemaker, the Big 12 passing leader after coming with his coach from North Texas, they have a four-game winning streak and scored at least 40 points in three consecutive games for the first time since 2018.
Houston, which has won three in a row, is hosting its first Top 25 matchup since 2015. A 10-win team last year, the Cougars have only 19 transfers for coach Willie Fritz in his third season.
Impact players
— Utah quarterback Devon Dampier has completed 71.8% of his passes (94 of 131) for 1,134 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is 14-2 as the starter for the No. 11 Utes (5-0, 2-0), who have an FBS-best streak of 11 games with at least 30 points. They play at Colorado (2-3, 0-2).
— Houston tight end Patrick Overmyer tied an NCAA single-game record for TD catches by a TE with four at Kansas State last week. The 6-foot-5 Texas native’s six TDs are the most nationally by a TE, and his 399 yards receiving rank second.
These instate rivals have been around for a long, long time
Two of the Big 12’s four protected annual rivalry games will be played Saturday.
Baylor (4-1, 2-0) hosts TCU (2-3, 0-3) in the 122nd edition of Revivalry, the most-played game in Texas and a series that began with a scoreless tie in 1899. The Sunflower Showdown between Kansas State (3-2, 0-2) and Kansas (2-3, 0-2) is being played for the 116th year in a row.
The other protected rivalry games are Arizona-Arizona State and BYU-Utah.
Inside the numbers
The Big 12 has five teams ranked in the top 20 in October for the first time since 2014. … West Virginia (3-3, 0-3) has played three consecutive games in which the teams combined for 1,000 yards of offense. The Mountaineers lead all non-service academy schools in rushing at 295.5 yards per game, but have the P4’s worst pass defense allowing 297 a game. They host Cincinnati (4-1, 1-1) … No. 10 Texas Tech (5-0, 2-0) and Arizona State (3-2, 2-1), who play Saturday in Lubbock, have split their two Big 12 meetings. The home team won both, but the loser went on to win the conference championship, the Red Raiders last year after the Sun Devils in 2024.

LOADED BIG TEN SCHEDULE INCLUDES AN OHIO STATE-INDIANA MATCHUP OF THE LAST TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Things to watch this weekend in the Big Ten:
Game of the week
No. 4 Ohio State (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) at No. 5 Indiana (6-0, 3-0), Saturday, noon ET (Fox)
The first matchup ever between top-five teams at Indiana’s Memorial Stadium features the winners of the last two national championships. Defending national champion Indiana rallied from a 17-6, fourth-quarter deficit to win 20-17 at Nebraska last week.
This is a rematch of last year’s Big Ten championship game that Indiana won 13-10, snapping a 30-game skid in the series. Indiana has won its last 22 games, the longest such streak for any Bowl Subdivision team since Georgia won 29 straight from 2021-23.
Ohio State is a 3 ½-point favorite. The Buckeyes have beaten their last four opponents by an average of 31.3 points since losing 24-23 at then-No. 4 Texas.
The undercard
Wisconsin (4-1, 2-0) at No. 12 UCLA (5-0, 3-0), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
UCLA tries to remain unbeaten in its first full game since losing quarterback Nico Iamaleava to a knee injury. The Bruins will face a stout defense from the Badgers, who have won four straight games since the season-opening loss to Notre Dame.
No. 25 Northwestern (4-1, 1-1) at Michigan State (2-4, 0-3), Saturday, noon ET (Peacock)
Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald returns to his alma mater. Fitzgerald coached Northwestern to a 110-101 record from 2006-22 before a bitter exit. This also marks a homecoming of sorts for former Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles, who has thrown nine touchdown passes without an interception at Northwestern this season.
Impact players
— UCLA RB Wayne Knight is the first Bruin to have at least one rushing touchdown in each of a season’s first five games since Maurice Jones-Drew in 2005. Knight ran for 103 yards and a touchdown against Oregon.
— Purdue RB Fame Ijeboi, who transferred from Minnesota, rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns in the Boilermakers’ 41-13 blowout of his former team. According to Pro Football Focus, Ijeboi has forced 43 missed tackles to lead all FBS players.
— Indiana DL Tobi Osunsanmi has recorded a sack in five straight games.
— Penn State LB Tony Rojas is one of only nine Big Ten linebackers since 1956 to combine at least 22 career tackles for loss and six interceptions.
Inside the numbers
Indiana hasn’t posted a negative turnover margin in 30 straight games, the longest such streak for any FBS team since at least 1995. … The crowd of 114,419 for No. 19 Southern California’s 31-23 victory at Penn State was the fourth-largest attendance for any college football regular-season game in history. … Northwestern is in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2020. … Ohio State enters Saturday’s game at Indiana owning a 29-4 road record since Ryan Day’s coaching tenure began in 2019. That matches Louisiana-Lafayette and Boise State for the highest total of road wins during that stretch. … No. 17 Iowa allowed limited Washington to minus-3 yards rushing in the Hawkeyes’ 41-24 triumph last week. It was the second time in coach Kirk Ferentz’s 28-year tenure that Iowa held an opponent to negative rushing yards. Kent State had minus-13 yards rushing in a 39-7 loss to Iowa in 2004.

NO. 3 MIAMI HOSTS FLORIDA STATE, NO. 21 WAKE FOREST VISITS CAL TO HIGHLIGHT ACC GAME SLATE
Things to watch this weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference:
Game of the week
Florida State (3-3, 1-2 ACC) at No. 3 Miami (5-0, 3-0), Saturday, 7 p.m. ET (ESPN)
The third-ranked Hurricanes are red hot while the Seminoles are struggling. Miami is a whopping 21 1/2-point favorite.
The Hurricanes throttled Clemson 41-13 on the road before the bye week and haven’t really been challenged much this season as they looked to return to college football’s national championship game. With Darian Mensah at quarterback, Miami ranks first in the nation in offense (554.8 yards) and scoring (49.6 points) per game.
Florida State is looking to rebound from a 44-20 loss to Louisville last weekend.
The undercard
No. 21 Wake Forest (5-1, 3-1) at California (3-3, 2-1), Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Wake Forest cracked the Top 25 rankings this week and looks to retain sole possession of second place in the league. The Demon Deacons have won three straight after beating North Carolina State 38-14 last week behind 303 yards passing and three touchdowns from Gio Lopez. Cal is one win behind Wake Forest in the standings after a 25-20 come-from-behind win over Virginia Tech.
North Carolina (3-2, 1-1) at Duke (4-1, 1-1), Saturday, 3:30 p.m ET (ESPN2)
Bill Belichick got his first win against a Top 25 opponent last week when his Tar Heels defeated then-No. 25 Pitt 21-17. Now the Tar Heels head over to Durham to face rival Duke. The Blue Devils should be plenty motivated as they look to rebound from a 28-25 loss at Georgia Tech.
Impact players
— Louisville RB Isaac Brown. The junior rushed for a career-high 235 yards on just 17 carries, scoring touchdowns from 97 and 68 yards in Louisville’s win over Florida State. He also returned a kickoff 71 yards to finish with 313 all-purpose yards.
— Cal QB Jackson Brousseau. The Colorado State transfer threw for 321 yards and one touchdown last week as Cal rallied to beat Virginia Tech. After trailing the Hokies for nearly the entire game, Brousseau led a six-play, 75-yard drive to give Cal the lead. Brousseau was declared the starter after Jeron-Keawe Sagapolutele was ruled out before the game with a concussion.
— North Carolina QB Billy Edwards Jr., who overcame two interceptions and some bad decisions by throwing a 75-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter in the second half to help UNC knock off Pitt on the road. Edwards completed 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns.
Inside the numbers
Wake Forest QB Gio Lopez has accounted for 19 touchdowns this season, including 13 through the air. … Wake Forest’s Jack Foley’s 156 yards receiving yards were 30 more than any other ACC wide receiver recorded in Week 6…. North Carolina DL Xavier Lewis tallied a career-high 10 tackles in the win over Pitt. … Virginia Tech’s Ethan Grukenmeyer leads the ACC with 1,734 yards passing and has 12 TD passes with just two interceptions.. … Virginia P Daniel Sparks averaged 52.2 yards on six punts against Syracuse, including a long of 72 yards. He now has an ACC-leading 15 punts downed inside the 20. … The other conference matchups on Saturday include Pitt at Boston College, Virginia at SMU, Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech and Louisville at Syracuse.

AFC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren, New York Jets EDGE David Bailey and Buffalo Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 5 (October 8, 11-12).
OFFENSE: RB JAYLEN WARREN, PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Warren recorded a career-high 188 scrimmage yards (101 rushing, 87 receiving) and had two scrimmage touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in Pittsburgh’s 34-22 win against Indianapolis. His 188 scrimmage yards were the most in the AFC in Week 5. Warren, with an 80-yard touchdown reception and 50-yard touchdown run, became the sixth player in NFL history and first in 40 seasons with a receiving touchdown of 80-or-more yards and a rushing touchdown of 50-or-more yards in the same game, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown (Sept. 15, 1963) and Gale Sayers (Dec. 12, 1965) as well as Harmon Wages (Dec. 7, 1969), Herschel Walker (Dec. 14, 1986) and Delvin Williams (Nov. 7, 1976).
This is Warren’s first Player of the Week Award. He is the first Steelers player to be named Offensive Player of the Week since Ben Roethlisberger (Week 10, 2020) and the first Steelers running back to earn the honor since James Conner (Week 8, 2019).
Warren becomes the fourth former Oklahoma State running back to win Offensive Player of the Week, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Barry Sanders (11-time winner) and Thurman Thomas (five) as well as Chuba Hubbard (Week 16, 2024).
DEFENSE: EDGE DAVID BAILEY, NEW YORK JETS
Bailey recorded seven tackles and three sacks in the New York Jets’ 17-12 win against Cleveland. He is the first rookie since Jaelan Phillips (Week 12, 2021) with three sacks and three tackles for loss in a single game. Bailey is the third player in the last 24 seasons (2003-26) to record three sacks in a game within his first five career games, joining Aidan Hutchinson (three sacks on Sept. 18, 2022, with Detroit) and Elvis Dumervil (three sacks on Oct. 22, 2006, with Denver).
This is Bailey’s first Player of the Week award. He becomes the first Jets player to win Defensive Player of the Week since Jordan Whitehead (Week 1, 2023) and the fourth Jets rookie to earn the honor, joining Russell Carter (Week 15, 1984), Sauce Gardner (Week 7, 2022) and Dee Milliner (Week 17, 2013).
Bailey is the fifth former Texas Tech player to be named Defensive Player of the Week, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Zach Thomas (three-time winner), Jordyn Brooks (two), Marcus Coleman (Week 10, 1999) and Curtis Jordan (Week 8, 1985). He joins Byron Hanspard (Week 15, 1997) and Wes Welker (Week 5, 2004) as the only former Texas Tech players to win a Player of the Week award as a rookie.
SPECIAL TEAMS: LB GREG ROUSSEAU, BUFFALO BILLS
With under five minutes to play in Buffalo’s 37-34 overtime win at the Los Angeles Rams, Rousseau blocked a 48-yard field goal attempt that would have been the game-winning score. The Bills kicked the game-winning field goal five plays later. It marked the first blocked field goal in overtime that led to a win since the 2015 season and the fourth-latest blocked field goal in overtime since 1974.
This is Rousseau’s third Player of the Week award and first on special teams. He becomes the fourth Bills defensive player to earn the honor and the first since Leodis McKelvin (Week 11, 2012).
2021: Week 5 (Defense)
2024: Week 1 (Defense)

Gibbs led the NFL in scrimmage yards (207), ranked second in rushing yards (151) and scored two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in Detroit’s 45-21 win at Arizona in Week 5, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (57 scrimmage touchdowns) for the most scrimmage touchdowns by a player under the age of 25 in NFL history. Gibbs also joined Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown (1958 and 1963 with Cleveland), Eric Dickerson (1983 with the L.A Rams) and Emmitt Smith (1995 with Dallas) as well as Priest Holmes (2002 with Kansas City) as the only running backs all-time with at least 700 scrimmage yards and nine scrimmage touchdowns in his team’s first five games of a season.
This is Gibbs’ fourth career Offensive Player of the Week award. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders (11-time winner) as the only Lions running backs in franchise history to win the award four times.
2024: Week 18
2025: Weeks 10 and 12

Gibbs is the third former Alabama running back to earn four Offensive Player of the Week awards, joining Derrick Henry (10-time winner with Tennessee and Baltimore) and Shaun Alexander (seven-time winner with Seattle).
DEFENSE: CB BYRON MURPHY, MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Murphy recorded three tackles, two interceptions and a tackle for loss in the Vikings’ 23-13 win at New Orleans as Minnesota allowed fewer than 100 passing yards for the second-consecutive week.
This is Murphy’s second-career Defensive Player of the Week award (Week 3, 2021 with Arizona). He is the 10th Vikings cornerback to win the award and the first since Isaiah Rodgers (Week 3, 2025).

His five punts inside the 20-yard line and three punts inside the 10-yard line are tied for the most in a single game this season.
This is Waitman’s second-career Player of the Week award (Week 3, 2022 with Denver). He becomes the fourth 49ers punter to win Special Teams Player of the Week, joining Andy Lee (three-time winner), Mitch Wishnowsky (two-time winner) and Bradley Pinion (Week 9, 2018).

SEAHAWKS’ DRAKE THOMAS, BRONCOS’ PAT SURTAIN II OUT FOR THURSDAY GAME
Linebacker Drake Thomas is among three Seahawks who will be sidelined Thursday when Seattle plays a road game against the Denver Broncos.
Thomas, who sustained an ankle injury last week during the Seahawks’ 32-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, was officially listed as “out” on the team’s Wednesday injury report.
Seattle will also play without running back Zach Charbonnet, who has yet to return from offseason knee surgery, and reserve linebacker Chazz Surratt, who has a calf ailment that will cost him a third consecutive game.
Meanwhile, the Broncos ruled out two players for Thursday, cornerback Pat Surtain II and safety Talanoa Hufanga, both because of ankle injuries. Adding to the team’s secondary woes, cornerback Riley Moss was limited in practice all week due to a rib ailment and is listed as questionable.
Tyrice Knight will step in to start for the Seahawks in Thomas’ place.
“We’re confident he’ll play great, and the standard stays the same on defense,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said of Knight. “I know he’s excited for the opportunity, and we’re excited to see him play.”
Regarding Charbonnet, Macdonald said, “He looks tremendous. Working through it on how we’re going to handle the situation (in terms of deciding when he comes off physically unable to perform list). Right now, our focus is on playing a game. He’s not playing in this game. He’s going to be cheering us on and then we’ll move forward.
“We’re not even at nine months (since Charbonnet’s left ACL operation). … It’s remarkable that we’re having this conversation.”
The good news for the Seahawks is that wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and defensive tackle Leonard Williams are both set to play despite ankle issues that limited them in practice this week.
“Those guys, they’re ready to play,” Macdonald said of Smith-Njigba and Williams. “Looked good.”
Surtain, a two-time first-team All-Pro, will miss his second consecutive game. Moss also sat out Sunday, when the Broncos earned a 23-17 road victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, a game in which Hufanga was injured.
The Seahawks (3-2) sit in second place in the NFC West behind the 49ers (5-0). The Broncos (3-2) share second in the AFC West with the Las Vegas Raiders (3-2), both looking up at the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0).

RAMS TRY TO TURN CLOSE LOSSES INTO WIN AGAINST STRUGGLING CARDINALS
As the Los Angeles Rams move into a more manageable stretch of their schedule, they won’t get a chance to catch their breath, as a home matchup against the Arizona Cardinals awaits Sunday at Inglewood, Calif.
The Rams (2-3) will enter off yet another hard-luck defeat after falling 37-34 to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night when Harrison Mevis’ game-winning field-goal attempt in the extra period was blocked. A missed pass-interference penalty haunted them in a 30-26 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 3. They went halfway around the world for a Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The Bills capitalized on the blocked kick and delivered their own game-winning field goal, while Mevis was ejected off the roster less than 24 hours later. Mevis missed two kicks on the night.
What the Rams have shown in recent weeks, though, is the ability to raise their game in the second half. They scored 14 fourth-quarter points to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20 in Week 4 and forced overtime against the Bills with 20 fourth-quarter points.
Matthew Stafford has started to hit his stride after a slow start, completing 74.1% of his passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills. He did not throw an interception for the first time this season.
Puka Nacua had a career-high 17 receptions that went for 138 yards and a touchdown. Davante Adams had two TD receptions of his own. But the kicking game proved costly.
“It’s going to be an opportunity for us to respond and really look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘What is our identity going to be?’” Nacua said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
In place of Mevis, the Rams signed Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad. In 50 career NFL games over three seasons, mostly for the New Orleans Saints, Grupe has made 81.9% of his field goals.
The Cardinals (1-4) arrive on a four-game losing streak after a 45-21 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. A day later, Arizona officially traded wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans after reports of the deal surfaced prior to the game.
Jacoby Brissett completed 61.7% of his passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, but the Cardinals’ defense gave up 412 total yards, including 163 on the ground. The Lions put the game away with three second-half touchdowns.
Arizona now heads back to the Los Angeles area, where they got their season off to what appeared to be a promising start with a 26-14 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Nothing has gone right since, with Arizona giving up an average of 37.0 points over their last four games.
Adding to the Cardinals’ concerns, rookie running back Jeremiyah Love did not practice Wednesday with a left ankle injury. Head coach Mike LaFleur admitted that he is not opposed to holding Love out this week.
“I’m going to try to be as candid as possible knowing that everyone is listening to this too,” LaFleur said. “He’s a tough dude. But you see how he plays and how aggressive he is with his cuts. … We all agree that as much as he wants to battle, hey, let’s give it a little bit of rest and see how it is as the week goes on.”
Safeties Wydett Williams Jr. (concussion) and Andrew Wingard (knee) also did not practice for the Cardinals.
The Rams will be without left tackle Alaric Jackson, who was suspended for an altercation after Monday’s loss to the Bills, though the suspension was reduced to one game on Wednesday. David Quessenberry will start in his place. Los Angeles tight end Davis Allen (foot) did not practice Wednesday.

RAVENS VISIT OLD PAL TODD MONKEN, BROWNS IN CRITICAL AFC NORTH DUEL
First-year Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken downplayed the notion that he will be extra motivated for Sunday’s AFC North contest against the visiting Baltimore Ravens, but several of his former players in Baltimore know better.
Monken served as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons before landing the Browns’ job after last season.
“I have a lot of good friends and people there,” Monken said of the Ravens on Wednesday. “Other than that, it’s a divisional game and it’s the next one.”
Ravens right tackle Roger Rosengarten recalled Monken telling the offense that victories in division games count as a win-and-a-half. So, of course, Rosengarten and teammates such as cornerback Marlon Humphrey aren’t buying Monken’s line about just another Sunday.
“He was probably one of my favorite coaches of all time,” Humphrey said of Monken. “If I know Todd the way I think I know Todd, he will want to kick our tails.”
It certainly ranks as a big game for the Ravens (4-1) and Browns (3-2).
The other two teams in the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, also are 3-2 in a division that has been strong over the first third of the season.
Baltimore is waiting to see whether quarterback Lamar Jackson (ankle) will return after missing last week’s 30-23 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Jackson didn’t practice Wednesday, and first-year coach Jesse Minter is willing to let the situation play itself out.
“It’s definitely day-to-day,” Minter said. “A lot of times those things, right when they happen, you’re not sure. As you gather information, you look at stuff. Again, to Lamar’s credit, he’s working his butt off. He’s doing everything he can to be out here. And when he’s able to be, he will.”
Jackson won his second NFL MVP award in 2023 when Monken was running the Ravens’ offense.
Tyler “Snoop” Huntley started last week and scored the game-winning points on a 1-yard run. He completed 24 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
Monken is also quite familiar with Huntley, who started eight games (4-4 record) during Monken’s three seasons in Baltimore.
When asked if the Browns are preparing for Jackson this week, Monken didn’t bite.
“I think you prepare for the Ravens,” Monken said. “… I’ve been there where we played Snoop. Snoop is a really good football player and has won a lot of football games as a starter.”
Ravens running back Derrick Henry rushed for 102 yards against Atlanta. He ranks fifth in the NFL in rushing yards (476) and is tied for second with seven rushing touchdowns.
Cleveland is struggling offensively and ranks 29th in total offense (273.6 yards per game) and tied for 27th in scoring offense (18.6 points per game). The Browns had just 198 yards in last weekend’s 17-12 loss to the Jets in New Jersey.
Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson said the running game has to improve for the Browns to find balance and keep defenses on their heels. Quinshon Judkins has a team-best 221 yards but averages just 3.0 per carry.
“Being able to run the ball is one of the hardest things to do in this league,” Watson said. “If we can do that, it opens up a lot of things.”
While Jackson was the lone Baltimore player to miss practice due to injury, 12 players were listed as limited. Among them were Humphrey (hamstring/calf), receiver Rashod Bateman (shoulder) and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley (toe/ankle).
Center Cam Jurgens (concussion) was limited and is expected to play for the first time since being acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles. Receiver Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) returned from injured reserve to practice in full, while outside linebacker Trey Hendrickson (finger) was a full participant. Hendrickson missed the past two games.
Cleveland had 11 players miss practice, including Judkins (ankle), defensive tackle Mason Graham (knee/ankle), linebacker Carson Schwesinger (ankle) and offensive tackle Tytus Howard (knee).
The Ravens won both matchups last season and have beaten Cleveland three straight times.

ROOPE HINTZ SCORES IN 4TH ROUND OF SHOOTOUT AS STARS OUTLAST AVALANCHE 3-2
DENVER (AP) — Roope Hintz scored in the fourth round of the shootout and the Dallas Stars beat Colorado 3-2 on Wednesday night in a game where the Avalanche had two early goals disallowed.
Hintz sent a wrist shot past Scott Wedgewood. Casey DeSmith secured the win by stopping Brock Nelson.
Miro Heiskanen and Arttu Hyry scored for the Stars, who split a back-to back set of games with the Avalanche. They lost 3-2 at home the night before.
Hyry nearly won it in overtime but sent a bouncing puck off the post. Hyry’s short-handed tally off a steal against Cale Makar gave the Stars a 2-1 lead early in the third period before Nelson tied it with 11:39 left.
Gabriel Landeskog also had a goal for Colorado.
The Avalanche had quite a night of disallowed goals and close calls. Jaden Schwartz saw his score overturned in the first period after the Stars successfully challenged for offsides. Later in the period, Gabriel Landeskog’s goal was taken off the board when it was ruled the captain made a kicking motion to knock in the puck.
In the third, Gavin Brindley thought he scored and even began celebrating with teammates. But the officials never ruled it a goal and replays showed it glanced off both posts and didn’t go into the net.
DeSmith finished with 25 saves for Dallas. He stopped three of four in the shootout. Stars forward Oskar Back suffered an upper-body injury in the first period and didn’t return.
Makar returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game against the Stars. He and his wife welcomed twin boys on Wednesday morning.

ALEX TUCH HAS 2 GOALS AND AN ASSIST IN THE CAPITALS’ 5-4 WIN OVER THE CANADIENS
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Tuch scored twice and added an assist and the Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 on Wednesday night.
Jordan Kyrou had a goal and assist, Justin Holl and Ivan Miroshnichenko also scored and Charlie Lindgren stopped 26 shots to help the Capitals snap a two-game losing streak.
Josh Anderson scored twice and Lane Hutson and Nick Suzuki added goals for the Canadiens.
Both teams played on Tuesday night, with Washington falling 4-2 at Carolina, and Montreal edging Buffalo 4-3 in a shootout at home.
Montreal got off to a quick start when Anderson, alone at the net front, buried a feed from Alex Newhook 4:56 into play. Minutes later, Kryou responded, cutting to the middle before rifling a quick shot past Jakub Dobes.
Roughly halfway through the first, Montreal regained the lead, as Hutson, playing against younger brother Cole for the first time, beat Charlie Lindgren on a quick shot from the slot. With 25 seconds to go in the period, the Capitals tied it 2 on a power play. Ivan Miroshnichenko’s backdoor feed to Tuch went off Anderson’s stick and in.
Washington took a 3-2 lead 6:16 into the second period, when Tuch had a short-handed goal. Anderson tied it again from close range.
Justin Holl broke the tie with 7:31 minutes to go, beating Dobes on a point shot through traffic. Tuch added an insurance goal minutes later for his fifth of the season.
Suzuki pulled the Canadiens within one with 1:39 to go on a power play with an extra attacker.

TOP INDIANA PRESS RELEASES/HEADLINES
COLTS
For safety Camryn Bynum and the Indianapolis Colts’ defense, it’s time to tighten things up.
It’s time to stop allowing so many points, start generating more takeaways and sacks and, most importantly, help the team improve on a 2-3 start that has it looking up at the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) in the AFC South.
On paper, a Sunday visit from the Tennessee Titans (0-5) should give Indianapolis a chance to turn things around. Coming off a 34-22 loss last week in Pittsburgh, the Colts rank 27th in the NFL in points allowed at 27.6 per game.
Bynum believes the formula is simple.
“Just leave no boxes unchecked,” he said. “I think this week, especially with our up-and-down performances that we’ve had, we want to lock in on every single detail and make sure that No. 1, effort and the controllable things are done to 100%.Buy Game Tickets
“The communication, knowing our assignments, those things that are controllable, making sure those are taken care of because that should never be a question on game day. Then everything else after the ball snaps, then that’ll take care of itself.”
The Colts ran into plenty of problems in Pittsburgh, specifically 188 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns from the Steelers’ Jaylen Warren and 235 passing yards and three TD passes from Aaron Rodgers.
That was too much to overcome for an Indianapolis offense looking to regain the form that carried the team to an 8-2 start last year. Indianapolis is scoring 24.8 points per game this season (11th in the NFL) but ranks in the bottom half of the league in rushing, passing, total yards and third-down conversion percentage.
Although Jonathan Taylor has rushed for 398 yards and six touchdowns in five games, quarterback Daniel Jones hasn’t been quite as efficient. Losing No. 1 wide receiver Alec Pierce hasn’t helped, but Jones has averaged 5.8 yards per attempt, one of the lowest figures in the NFL.
In theory, Tennessee could help Jones find the explosive plays the offense has been missing. The Titans are allowing opponents to complete 74% of their passes, a rate surpassed only by the Miami Dolphins’ 76.6%.
On the other side of the ball, Tennessee’s offense has been consistently ineffective, averaging a league-low 11.6 points per game. The Titans suffered a 26-3 home loss to the previously winless Houston Texans last week.
Tennessee ranks last in total offense, 31st in passing, 27th in rushing and last in average time of possession. Second-year quarterback Cam Ward is averaging 5.8 yards per attempt, the same as Jones.
Ward knows it won’t be easy for the franchise to rebound after struggling mightily in recent seasons.
“We all have something to play for,” he said. “It’s bigger than ourselves — it’s about the organization. It’s about what we want the narrative to be about us. And we have the ability to control that each and every week.
“We know what we are capable of doing, and we are not meeting our expectations. But we have a lot of games left. At the end of the day, we have to play better on Sundays to get the results that we want.”
Since the start of the 2024 season, the Titans have lost 33 of 39 games, with four of the defeats coming against the Colts. Indianapolis has won the teams’ past six matchups.
Titans safety Kevin Winston Jr. (quadriceps) did not practice on Wednesday, while running back Tyjae Spears (knee), cornerback Marcus Harris (ankle), safety Amani Hooker (concussion) and tight end David Martin-Robinson (hamstring) were limited.
Colts right tackle Jalen Travis (ankle), wide receiver Ashton Dulin (hamstring) and linebacker Jaylon Carlies (ribs) did not practice on Wednesday, while wide receiver Josh Downs (hamstring) was limited. Right guard Matt Goncalves and defensive end Jaylahn Tuimoloau were undergoing concussion evaluations.
####################
Wide receiver Ashton Dulin (hamstring), tackle Jalen Travis (ankle) and linebacker Jaylon Carlies (ribs) missed Wednesday’s practice due to injury. Dulin and Carlies missed Sunday’s game, while Travis was injured in the fourth quarter against the Steelers but later returned to the game. Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who also missed Sunday’s game with a knee injury, was a full participant Wednesday.
Quarterback Daniel Jones (ankle) and tight end Will Mallory (thumb) were both full participants.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen and cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. also did not practice, with both on a veteran rest day. Running back Jonathan Taylor was a limited participant for the same reason.
Wide receiver Josh Downs was a limited participant due to rest, as well as a hamstring injury.
Right guard Matt Goncalves and defensive end Jaylahn Tuimoloau were both listed as limited participants due to concussion evaluations.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame’s offensive line was named one of 25 units selected to the 2026 Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll. The award annually honors the best offensive line unit in college football. Notre Dame last won the award in 2017.
The Irish offensive line has helped power one of the nation’s most productive scoring offenses through the first six games of the season. Notre Dame is averaging 44.0 points per game this season, the fourth-best mark in the country. The group has also excelled in pass protection, allowing just two sacks this season, tied for the second-fewest in the FBS.
Notre Dame’s offensive line turned in one of its most dominating performances of the season in last Saturday’s 58-7 win over Stanford. The Irish rushed for a season-high 361 yards, the fourth-most yards on the ground in the country during Week 6. Behind the offensive line, Notre Dame averaged 7.7 yards per rush, tied for the second-highest clip in the FBS over the weekend.
The Joe Moore Award is named after Joe Moore, widely regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches in college football history for his work at Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh. Moore coached 52 players who went on to play in the NFL, including Bill Fralic, Mark May, Russ Grimm, Jimbo Covert and Andy Heck.
Crafted by legendary sports sculptor Jerry McKenna, the Joe Moore Award trophy stands seven feet tall and weighs more than 800 pounds, making it the largest trophy in college football. The perpetual trophy remains on display at the winning university until the conclusion of the following college football season.

The Knights are under the direction of first-year head coach Steve Drabyn, who led Crossroads League member Bethel University to 148 wins across seven seasons, including five trips to the NAIA Tournament and a national quarterfinal appearance in 2020-21.
Marian brings in nine newcomers to the program in 2026-27, after the Knights finished in a tie for ninth in conference a season ago.
The Knights open up the 2026-27 season on the road against NAIA defending national champion Freed-Hardeman on Saturday, Oct. 24. They make their home debut on Tuesday, Nov. 3, hosting IU Southeast.

MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League announced its 2026-2027 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll and Preseason All-League Team on Wednesday, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Marian was tabbed second for the second year in a row, with two athletes on the Preseason First Team and one on the second team.
Saint Francis was voted as the preseason favorite, after going 30-5 overall last season with a 15-3 league mark. The Cougars (14) were followed in the poll’s top-five by Marian (18), Indiana Wesleyan (24), Spring Arbor (33), and Huntington (38).
Marian finished first in both the regular season and the tournament, with Saint Francis finishing second and Indiana Wesleyan finishing third in both the regular season and the Crossroads League tournament. Marian finished their historic season last year, defeating the two-time defending national champion Dordt 73-61 to win the 2026-27 NAIA National Championship for the third time in school history. The Knights carried a record of 35-2 overall on the year and 16-2 in Crossroads League play.
In addition to the preseason poll, the league released the preseason first and second teams in the league. Both Taylor Double and Madisyn Bailey were tabbed to the Crossroads League preseason first team, while Olivia Faust was named to the second team. Bailey was named to the NAIA Tournament first team after the National Tournament, as well as the Crossroads League second team and defensive team. Double was named to the NAIA All-American third team as well as the Crossroads League first team after her performance last year. Rounding out the Knights, Faust was named to the Crossroads League second team last season.
Marian will open up their season on Monday, October 26th as they travel to Rochester Hills, Mich. to take on Rochester Christian at 7 PM. They will also continue opening week, traveling down to Bloomington to take on Indiana University on October 28th. The Knights round out the week in Montgomery, Ala., taking on Faulkner University and William Carey University on Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st.
