TOP NATIONAL HEADLINES/PRESS RELEASES

NFL

Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett is heading from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens, a person with knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been completed.

Brissett started eight games for Arizona this season but was demoted to third-string quarterback after Gardner Minshew stepped in and led the Cardinals to a 33-30 comeback victory at Dallas.

The Ravens (4-4) desperately needed a quarterback after losing Lamar Jackson to a thumb injury and backup Tyler Huntley to a toe injury.

Jackson needs surgery on his right thumb and is out indefinitely. Huntley reportedly will miss the rest of the season.

Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start for the Ravens against Jacksonville (5-2) on Thursday night. Brissett likely would start against the Chargers on Nov. 15.

The 33-year-old Brissett is 23-50 as a starter in 11 seasons with New England, Indianapolis, Miami, Cleveland, Washington and Arizona. He had two stints with the Patriots, who drafted him in the third round in 2016 to back up Tom Brady.

Brissett has completed 63.3% of his passes this season for 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

LIONS LINEBACKER JACK CAMPBELL SAYS HE HAS FULL MOVEMENT IN LOWER BODY AFTER SUFFERING NECK INJURY

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell said he has full movement in his lower body and is “continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body,” in his first comments since he was carted off the field on a backboard during a game against Minnesota.

“I know there’s still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic,” Campbell said Wednesday in a statement released by the team. “I’m taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better.”

Campbell suffered a neck injury early in the fourth quarter of a 19-15 win over the Vikings on Sunday. He was alert when he was taken to the hospital, where he has been recovering since his injury.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said it was powerful that Jack Campbell updated his improving condition himself, shortly before the team’s previously scheduled news conferences with coaches and players.

BROWNS QB WATSON ENTERS CONCUSSION PROTOCOL AFTER SYMPTOMS SURFACED, SANDERS COULD GO AGAINST SAINTS

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has been placed in the concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms Monday night.

If Watson is not cleared in time for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, Shedeur Sanders would get his first start of the season.

Watson took a helmet-to-helmet hit during the first quarter of last week’s 27-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The independent certified athletic trainer watching the game from the press box called down to the Browns sideline and Watson was given a gameday concussion evaluation and cleared by the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant.

The 10-year veteran returned to the game and completed 27 of 39 passes for 324 yards, his second straight 300-yard game.

The Browns said Wednesday morning that Watson received evaluations after Sunday’s game and Monday morning. He was cleared after showing no symptoms. Watson told the medical staff Tuesday morning he began experiencing symptoms Monday night when he was placed in the concussion protocol.

Sanders was in for four plays against the Steelers, and completed both of his passes for 2 yards. He started the final seven games of his rookie season last year, going 3-4 with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

SEAHAWKS QUARTERBACK SAM DARNOLD RULED OUT AGAINST THE CARDINALS WITH A QUAD INJURY

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks will be without starting quarterback Sam Darnold on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals because of a quad injury.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday that backup Drew Lock will step in for Darnold. Lock started one game earlier this season against the Cardinals in Arizona and played most of the season opener against the New England Patriots after Darnold suffered a glute injury.

Darnold’s most recent injury came during the Seahawks’ 34-17 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday night. He completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Darnold will not go on injured reserve and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, Macdonald said.

Lock has been dealing with a sore elbow that sidelined him for two games and Jalen Milroe has been the backup.

Lock has completed 35 of 48 passes this season for 422 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, including a three-touchdown performance in a 31-7 victory over the Cardinals in Week 2.

With at least nine rushing yards at Minnesota (Monday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC), Allen can join Lamar Jackson (6,666 rushing yards), Michael Vick (6,109), Cam Newton (5,628) and Russell Wilson (5,568) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 5,000 rushing yards.

JOE BURROW

Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow leads the NFL with 20 touchdown passes this season, including 13 touchdown passes over his past three games (four in Weeks 5 and 7, five in Week 8).

With four touchdown passes in Madrid against Atlanta on Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network), Burrow can become the fourth quarterback in NFL history with at least four touchdown passes in four consecutive games, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Peyton Manning (five consecutive games in 2004 with Indianapolis) and Dan Marino (four in 1984 with Miami) as well as Tom Brady (four from 2020-21 with Tampa Bay).

PATRICK MAHOMES

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads the NFL with 325 touchdown passes, including the postseason, since entering the league in 2017.

With three touchdown passes against the New York Jets (1 p.m. ET, CBS), Mahomes can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (327 touchdown passes) for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first 10 seasons, including the playoffs, in NFL history.

Additionally, Mahomes, who has 49 career regular season games with at least three touchdown passes, can become the first player with at least three touchdown passes in 50 career regular season games in their first 10 seasons in NFL history.

DRAKE MAYE

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

‘THE PLAYOFFS START NOW’: NO. 12 OHIO STATE SET TO BATTLE NO. 23 OREGON

Oregon and Ohio State anticipated months ago that their game in Columbus on Saturday afternoon would have College Football Playoff implications as they battled for a high seed.

The Buckeyes sat atop the preseason rankings, with the Ducks landing a spot behind. The bonus matchup of potential Heisman Trophy finalists in Ducks quarterback Dante Moore and Ohio State counterpart Julian Sayin added further luster to the clash.

That was then.

Now, with vibrant fall leaves and crisp coolness in the air in Ohio’s capital city, it will be No. 23 Oregon (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) and quarterback Dylan Raiola against No. 12 Ohio State (6-2, 4-1) with Luke Fahey making his second start as both try to salvage their teams’ seasons.

“Coach (Ryan) Day was like, ‘The playoffs start now,’” Ohio State linebacker Christian Alliegro said.

Oregon hasn’t been the same since Moore suffered a concussion against Southern California on Sept. 26. He is out for the season.

Raiola, a former Ohio State commit and ex-Nebraska QB, has struggled but showed renewed confidence in last Saturday’s 34-26 win over then-No. 20 Northwestern. It was his first game since head coach Dan Lanning fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer on Oct. 25 and assigned play-calling duties to assistant quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson.

“I think the more comfortable he gets, the better he’s going to play,” Lanning said of Raiola on Monday. “Like I said postgame, he builds confidence as the game goes. So I think it’s important for us to be able to start early, but for him to also understand, ‘I don’t have to force anything,’ right?”

For Ohio State, Fahey, a freshman, had an uneven game last week replacing 2025 Heisman finalist Sayin, who injured his throwing arm against Indiana on Oct. 17 and is out indefinitely.

Against Southern California on Saturday, Fahey was 21 of 38 for 260 yards and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith, who was limited to 83 yards on 10 catches in the Buckeyes’ 30-18 loss, which put their postseason picture in peril.

The heat is on Day and the players in Columbus to meet the standards expected of one of the highest NIL payrolls in college football — reportedly between $49 million and $54 million.

“I’ve said it before,” Day said Tuesday. “We’re not allowed to lose two games, and when that happens, there’s consequences. That’s just the way it is, and if you don’t like it, then don’t come to Ohio State.”

Day said he is less concerned about outside criticism than he is the 11 penalties for 71 yards — and numerous other mistakes — the Buckeyes committed against the Trojans.

“The penalties are ridiculous and the mistakes are ridiculous,” he said. “So ultimately that leads me to believe that we’re not where we need to be.”

Despite neither Ohio State nor Oregon living up to expectations, Lanning said Saturday’s game won’t be any less important.

“I think that Ohio State speaks for itself. They’re a really good team, and it’s a real challenge this time of year,” he said. “It’s part of what makes it exciting about being at Oregon or being at a place like Ohio State: to get to play in games like this. So this is one that certainly means a lot to both of us.”

COLTS FOOTBALL

Colts head coach Shane Steichen previews the Colts’ Week 9 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, who currently sit at 3-5 on the season. He highlights Dak Prescott, George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb on offense, and also points out the need to focus on defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Steichen then discusses navigating swirling trade rumors from a coach’s perspective and how they do or do not impact playing time. Finally, he shares what he’s seen from cornerback Sauce Gardner, who the Colts acquired via trade a year ago Wednesday: https://www.colts.com/video/indianapolis-colts-head-coach-shane-steichen-midweek-update-colts-vs-dallas-cowboys-discusses-trade-rumors-dak-prescott-ceedee-lamb-george-pickens-sauce-gardner

################

Daniel Jones echoes the team-wide sentiment that staying focused throughout so much outside noise is key to stay together and get through the storm they’re in. Jones shares his observations of how running back Jonathan Taylor has handled himself and the noise as trade rumors have only gotten louder about his fellow captain. He then discusses what he sees from a Dallas defense that surrenders a lot of points, but also has a ton of talent in Caleb Downs, Quinnen Williams and more: https://www.colts.com/video/indianapolis-colts-quarterback-daniel-jones-colts-vs-dallas-cowboys-week-9-discusses-running-back-jonathan-taylor-quinnen-williams

Cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore describe how the team is preparing for the Dallas Cowboys and looking to respond after a disappointing effort at Jacksonville. Adebawore explains his excitement following his recent contract extension and why he wanted to remain in Indianapolis for the foreseeable future. Gardner describes the challenge of the Cowboys offense, in particular the match up against top wideouts CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Both Adeboware and Gardner admit that the defensive performance in Jacksonville was not up to standard and how they’re preparing throughout the week for improved execution and effort as the Colts return home on Sunday: https://www.colts.com/video/indianapolis-colts-cornerback-sauce-gardner-defensive-tackle-adetomiwa-adebawore-colts-vs-dallas-cowboys-week-9-discuss-ceedee-lamb-george-pickens

#################

After conducting a walkthrough last Wednesday, the Colts were back to a full practice this Wednesday ahead of their Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Five players did not participate in Wednesday’s practice: Wide receiver Keenan Allen (rest), linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee), tight end Drew Ogletree (knee), cornerback Justin Walley (knee) and cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (rest).

Walley missed the Colts’ Week 8 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars with the knee injury he sustained in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings. Ogletree was listed as questionable with a knee injury last week but played in Week 8.

Running back Jonathan Taylor (rest) was listed as a limited participant Wednesday. The Colts have consistently managed Taylor’s workload with limited participation on Wednesdays this season.

Linebacker Bryce Boettcher (groin) and wide receiver Anthony Gould (concussion) both were full participants Wednesday after missing Week 8 with their respective injuries.

COLTS, COWBOYS AT CROSSROADS IN INDY WITH A LOT TO LOSE

Almost everything went wrong for the Dallas Cowboys in the second half last week, resulting in an improbable loss to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime.

Not much has gone right in the first half of the season for the Indianapolis Colts, who will carry the burden of a four-game losing streak and the weight of roster roulette when they host the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

The Cowboys (3-5) blew a 17-3 second-half lead and handed the Cardinals a 33-30 win in a game that underscored two ongoing issues: a sputtering running game and a defense that’s prone to being torched for big plays. Dallas has lost three of its past four games but stands only a game back of the New York Giants in the win column in the NFC East.

Indianapolis (2-6) has traded All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson (to the Seattle Seahawks) and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (to the San Francisco 49ers), and reportedly rejected at least one offer for running back Jonathan Taylor. Wide receiver Josh Downs has requested a trade, and the Colts are considering their options with the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline approaching.

Taylor logged 38 snaps last week in a 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coach Shane Steichen is resisting suggestions that the Colts hold him out or limit his exposure before the deadline.

“He’s on our football team and he’s excited for this opportunity to go play. He wants to go win this game,” Steichen said.

Taylor did not practice Wednesday, as has been routine under Steichen. He’s fourth in the NFL in carries (148), tied for third in rushing touchdowns (eight) and eighth in rushing yards (610).

If ever there was a moment for the Colts to polish their most valuable trade asset, this would be the week. Dallas is last in the NFL against the run, allowing 152.8 rushing yards per game.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams has five of the Cowboys’ 15 sacks and has made key plays, but he said no player on the defense is celebrating personal success.

“We’re the problem. We’re the reason we’re losing these games. If we execute, we can be the reason why we win,” Williams said.

Indianapolis has been outscored by 61 points and ranks last in the NFL in turnover margin (minus-11) thanks to nine interceptions and six lost fumbles. Jacksonville is three games clear of the Colts and Houston Texans in the win column in the AFC South.

A possible matchup of Downs and his younger brother, Cowboys safety Caleb Downs, faces potential hurdles. Caleb Downs, a first-round pick in April, left last week’s game with a concussion, while Josh Downs could be traded by gameday.

“We play the Cowboys this week. I’ve got to focus on now,” Josh Downs said. “That’s what’s most important.”

If the Colts can keep enough of an offense together until Sunday, they are likely to be in the game based on Dallas’ recent track record and injuries in its secondary. In addition to Caleb Downs, P.J. Locke started the week in concussion protocol and Jalen Thompson remains out.

The Cowboys have scored 30 points five times but are only 3-2 in those games. They’re 1-11 under coach Brian Schottenheimer when they don’t score 30 points in a game.

“It’s not an effort issue. It’s an execution issue,” Schottenheimer said. “I’m responsible for everything that happens here. Our execution has to be cleaner. We have to be able to put some of these close games away that we’ve unfortunately let slip away from us. And that comes down to execution.”

INDIANA PACERS

The Pacers got six players back on Wednesday and got back in the win column, gutting out a 107-103 win in Memphis to snap a five-game skid.

The stars came up big for Indiana (3-6) down the stretch, as Andrew Nembhard, Pascal Siakam, and Aaron Nesmith all made key plays in the closing minutes to seal the win.

Nembhard scored a game-high 22 points to go along with five assists, Siakam added 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and Nesmith scored 16 and made the game-sealing three in the final seconds.

It was just the second loss this season for the Grizzlies (6-2) and Indiana’s first win at FedEx Forum since 2021.

“We’ve been below the standard,” Nembhard told DAZN’s Jeremiah Johnson after the win. “We just wanted to focus on our process. Win or lose tonight, we wanted to be comfortable with the effort we put out there.”

The Pacers took a 94-91 lead with 4:26 remaining in the fourth quarter following back-to-back fastbreak slams by Obi Toppin — the first an alley-oop from Quenton Jackson, the second a two-hand slam after a fullcourt pass from Jarace Walker.

A three from Jackson helped keep the Blue & Gold in front and then Nembhard found Larry Nance Jr. for a dunk that put Indiana up 99-95 with 2:55 to play.

Nembhard fouled Cedric Coward with 2:12 remaining and the Grizzlies’ second-year wing made one of two free throws to briefly make it a one-possession game, but Siakam answered with a mid-range jumper on the other end.

Two free throws from Zach Edey trimmed Indiana’s lead to 101-98 with 1:26 left, but once again Siakam had an answer, converting a jumper through contact and over Edey. He made the subsequent foul shot to complete the three-point play.

That looked like it might have been the dagger, but rookie forward Cam Boozer made a three with 45.1 seconds remaining to keep the Grizzlies in the game. Nesmith was then whistled for an illegal screen to give Memphis the ball. Ty Jerome’s floater cut Indiana’s lead to one with 28.2 seconds remaining.

On the other end, the Grizzlies trapped Siakam near midcourt. He found Nesmith open in the corner in front of the Pacers’ bench, who buried a three through contact from Cam Spencer to seal the win.

After playing with just six available players on Monday, the Pacers had much more depth on Wednesday with 12 active players, including the return of starters Nembhard, Siakam, Nesmith, and Ivica Zubac.

The Blue & Gold got off to a strong start, going 6-for-11 from 3-point range in the first quarter, with Nembhard, Siakam, and Jackson all making a pair of threes. Rookie guard Braden Smith — starting for the second straight game — added six points and four assists in the opening frame as Indiana jumped out to a 32-24 lead.

Memphis opened the second quarter with a 13-5 run to tie the game at 37, with Ty Jerome scoring eight points over that stretch.

Nembhard knocked down a midrange jumper to put the Pacers briefly back in front, but the Grizzlies quickly countered, taking the lead with an 11-3 spurt featuring six points from Coward.

The hosts maintained the lead until the final minute of the first half, when Nesmith buried a three from the right corner to put Indiana up 54-52. That remained the score heading into halftime.

Threes from Coward and Jerome early in the third quarter propelled Memphis back in front. Indiana clawed back ahead with a 12-4 run, but threes from Cam Spencer and Jerami Grant gave the Grizzlies a six-point lead with a minute remaining in the frame. Nembhard scored two buckets in the final 31 seconds — part of a 12-point quarter for the Indiana guard — to trim the deficit to 82-80 entering the fourth quarter.

There two ties and three lead changes in the first 4:26 of the final frame. The Pacers moved back in front following Toppin’s two straight dunks with under five minutes remaining.

Jackson finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals off the bench for Indiana, while fellow reserve Toppin tallied 11 points and five boards. Smith was the sixth and final Pacer in double figures with 10 points and five assists.

Jerome and Coward had 23 points apiece for Memphis, while Edey recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.

The Pacers will head south of the border to Mexico City on Thursday, where they will play Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets on Saturday as part of the NBA’s Global Games. Indiana will then wrap up a three-game trip on Monday in Dallas before returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a two-game homestand.

Inside the Numbers

Nembhard has scored 22 or more points in each of his last three games.

Siakam reached 20 points for the sixth time in eight games this season.

Jackson has scored in double figures in four straight contests.

Toppin returned after missing the last three games with a sore back and scored in double figures once more off the bench. He has reached double figures in all six games he has played in this season.

Walker had a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, with all eight of his boards coming in the fourth quarter.

Zubac returned after missing five straight games with a sprained ankle. The 7-foot center played 18:47 and tallied just one point while going 0-for-5 from the field, though he did tally four rebounds and two assists.

You Can Quote Me On That

“We had to do some soul searching heading into this game. We have not been playing up to a consistent level of intensity, force, collective will. The group [of six players] that played in the Atlanta game I thought gave us a spark and it was meaningful. Tonight, we just drew a line in the sand and decided we were not going to go away.” — Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle on Wednesday’s win

“We haven’t had a win in a while, so being able to try to fight and figure out a way to finally pull one away, it’s huge. You go into an opposing team’s building who is [6-1] — they’re a great team, had a great year so far for us to come in and respond that way, it’s what you want.” — Smith on the victory

“Memphis is a very good team. They’ve got a lot of weapons and they’ve got a lot of athletes out there. It took everybody. There was no two ways about that.” — Carlisle

“Walker played a great fourth quarter. He came up with some rebounds in traffic, he was in the right place at the right time, had a big finish on the break. Did a lot of good things.” — Carlisle on Jarace Walker’s contributions

“Quenton Jackson played with a lot of courage out there. Braden Smith gave us good minutes again and gave us another playmaker. And then Pascal really helped us finish the game.” — Carlisle on some of the key contributors to Wednesday’s win

Stat of the Night

Wednesday’s win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pacers in Memphis. Their last win at FedEx Forum prior to Wednesday came on April 11, 2021.

Noteworthy

Pacers wing Kelly Oubre Jr. missed his second straight game with a left calf contusion.

Siakam now needs 20 points to reach 13,000 career points. His next game will be his 700th career game.

Siakam and Nembhard each received technical fouls in the second quarter, Siakam for flopping on a play under the basket with Edey and Nembhard for shoving Jerome after the two became tangled up on the baseline.

Up Next

The Pacers will travel to Mexico City to take on the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Mexico City Game 2026 at Arena CDMX on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 5:00 PM ET.

INDIANA MEN’S SOCCER

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 4-ranked Indiana men’s soccer (14-1-3, 7-1-2 B1G) defeated No. 9 Michigan State (10-4-3, 5-3-2 B1G) 3-2 on Wednesday (Nov. 4) night to clinch the 2026 Big Ten regular season championship. The IU soccer program has won 20 Big Ten regular season titles – 14 more than any other program – and 36 total conference championships.

Third-year players Easton Bogard (two goals) and Charlie Heuer (one goal, two assists) gave career-best performances to lead Indiana offensively. Michal Mroz made four saves – two especially difficult stops – to keep MSU’s high-powered attack in check.

Washington, tied on points coming into the night, fell in its finale at UCLA, meaning that Indiana won the title outright. So, IU also earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will receive a bye before playing the winner of No. 4 seed Michigan State and No. 5 seed Maryland next Wednesday (Nov. 11) in the semifinal round. Indiana will host that quarterfinal match on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Sunday (Nov. 8) and retain hosting priority throughout the conference tournament.

Indiana completed the conference regular season with 23 points, seven victories, four ranked victories, five clean sheets, 15 goals and seven goals allowed.

Head coach Todd Yeagley has led the IU program to seven Big Ten regular season titles – second only to his father, Jerry Yeagley (10) – and 12 total conference championships. In Big Ten play, the younger Yeagley is the winningest head coach all-time, expanding his record to 83 wins.

“We love these moments,” Yeagley said. “They’re hard, they’re not easy. We’ve won a lot of them, but every one is special. I’m as excited today as I was playing in my first in 1991 […] They don’t get old. You just want more.”

KEY MOMENTS

• 55′ – GOAL! Mroz made the initial save on a Darakdjian shot, but the rebound fell to Richie Ludwig at the back post, and the Spartans made it a one-goal game once again. Indiana 3, Michigan State 2

• 70′ – Mroz made a pair of diving saves in the 62nd and 70th minutes, as Indiana clung to its one-goal advantage in the late stages.

• 73′ – From a counterattack, Oliver Moller-Jensen somehow got a shot off with four defenders closing in on him at the top of the box. And it was a quality attempt, but his shot dipped too late and clanged off the top corner of the post.

With the win, Indiana will face No. 1 Seed Northwestern on Friday in the Semifinal.

• Rutgers took the first shot of the game when Olivia Stazi shot with under a minute left in the first period before Sadie Canelli logged her first save of the day.

• Indiana defended Rutgers’ first penalty corner well in the 21st minute, not allowing any clean shot opportunities and forcing a shot going wide by Sophie Kuiper.

INDIANA SWIMMING

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 2/3 Indiana swimming and diving will compete in Thursday night’s College Swimming League Wild Card match, seeking to advance to Friday’s CSL Championship.

Indianapolis’ IU Natatorium will host both postseason matches, giving the Hoosiers a home-pool advantage in the final stages of CSL’s inaugural season. Thursday’s match will kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET, and fans unable to attend can watch on ESPNU, the ESPN+ digital platform and DAZN.

Indiana is favored to win and advance from the wild card round against No. 3/6 Cal, No. 10/8 Stanford and No. 9/7 Louisville – all three opponents IU defeated in its previous CSL matches. Up to twenty-eight athletes (14 men, 14 women) from each team will swim 15 events, with each team assigned two lanes; The Hoosiers will swim in the middle of the pool, lane Nos. 5 and 6.

Indiana went 5-1 in its first two CSL matches, recording the fourth-best point total (1,056 points) while taking on perhaps the toughest schedule of the 12 teams. IU second-year superstars Alex Shackell and Liberty Clark split women’s MVP honors for Match 1 and Match 5, respectively.

Shackell has dominated her butterfly events, unbeaten in the stroke so far this season. In Match 1, she won the individual skins competition, outlasting her opponents through four rounds of 50-yard butterfly and going times of 23.44, 23.63, 23.57 and 23.22 in her races. The Carmel, Indiana, native also contributed to Indiana’s “Super Skins” victories in each match.

Liberty Clark swept her three individual events in consecutive matches, unbeaten in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle so far. Her feat is especially impressive when considering the 100 freestyle is just two events after the 50 free, minimizing recovery time in this fast-paced competitive environment.

Josh Bey and Raekwon Noel have functioned as Indiana’s top point-earners on the men’s side. Bey, Clark, Shackell and current IU teammates Noah Cakir and Owen McDonald qualified for the United States’ World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) team and will give fans a preview before heading to Beijing next month.

Event order: 500 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle relay, 200 butterfly, 100 IM, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, Skins*, 200 IM, 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, Super Skins*

The College Swimming League is a brand new, dynamic league poised to “revolutionize college swimming with high-octane, fan-focused competition.” The inaugural season features a six-match regular season and a two-match postseason in a four-team match format, with each participating institution competing in two regular season matches.

*The CSL introduces Skins events to collegiate swimming. A skins race is an elimination-style sprint competition in which athletes race back-to-back rounds until two athletes/teams remain for a final head-to-head showdown. The team that wins the 200 freestyle relay gets to decide the stroke for the first round of skins. Super skins will feature four rounds of the 200 medley relay.

PURDUE VOLLEYBALL

COLUMBUS – The No. 14 Purdue volleyball squad (15-7, 8-5 B1G) defeated Ohio State (10-13, 3-10 B1G) in sweeping fashion, downing the Buckeyes 25-19, 29-27, 25-23.

With the sweep, Purdue improves to 11 on the year, surpassing 2025’s sweeps total with four matches in the regular-season remaining. It is the third time in the last 15 years the Boilermakers have posted as many sweeps in the regular-season (16 in 2024 and 11 in 2021).

Grace Heaney had herself a night, securing her seventh double-double of the season, including the third straight, behind a career-high-tying 18 digs, 14 kills with just one attack error for a .481% (14-1-27), two aces, including the Set 2 winner, and two blocks.

Kate Hansen set a season-high 11 kills, going errorless in the effort with 18 attacks for a .611 clip, just shy of entering Purdue’s record book in a three-set match. The graduate student rounded out her performance by being on over half of the team’s blocks (five of nine) and six digs – not only a season-best, but one shy of her career-high.

Addy Tindall rounded out the Boilers in double-digit kills, totaling 13 in the match.

Purdue came from behind in each of the last two sets, with Tindall securing the match-winner and denying two Ohio State set points in Set 2.

Down 13-20 in Set 2, Purdue came back on a 10-3 run to tie it up, a run that saw five kills by Heaney and three points by Hansen (ace, kill, block assist). The Boilers went on to deny Ohio State set point twice, thanks to kills by Addy Tindall. The Buckeyes in-turn denied the Boilermakers set point twice before Grace Heaney aced Ohio State to seal the win, 29-27.

With the Set 2 comeback, Purdue improved to a 7-1 record this season when extra points are needed in a game.

Defensively, Heaney led the squad’s back row, however MaryKate Scheumann posted 12, followed by Ryan McAleer with 10.

The Boilermakers rallied in the fourth quarter to beat IU Indy 81-73 on Monday night at Mackey Arena. After a slow start offensively and trailing by 11 points in the second quarter. Purdue closed the game on a 35-18 run over the final 12 minutes.

Avery Gordon showed off the gains she made during the offseason, finishing with 16 points and a career-best eight rebounds and 24 minutes.

Jelena Bulajić put together an all-around performance in her Purdue debut, going for 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists, all career highs.

Hannah Wickstrom made a living at the line against the Jaguars, going 9-of-12 to post a game-high 21 points. The junior ranked 29th in the nation last year with 146 free throws at UC Riverside. The Melbourne, Australia, native is 67 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Kyndall Hunter notched her seventh career game with 20 points or more with a 21-point outing against IU Indy, while playing a career-high 37 minutes.

Nine players made their Purdue debuts on Monday night – Wickstrom, Bulajić, Hunter, Taylor Henderson, Averi Aaron, Maya Zilbershlag, Katka Šedivá, Keona Douwstra and Anjela Minja.

After missing last season with an injury, Henderson played her first minutes as a Boilermaker, following a 599-day layoff from her final game at UNC Wilmington at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Maya Zilbershlag saw limited action in the season opener after missing all of summer workouts with the Boilermakers. The freshman led her native Israel to its best finish at the U20 Euros, finishing second, before guiding her country to the U18 B Euro title and earning MVP honors. She averaged 16.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists over her two 2026 summer events.

HANNAH’S HAMMER

Junior Hannah Wickstrom drew interest from teams across the country in the transfer portal after spending two seasons at UC Riverside.

The Australian international leads the team with 21.0 points per game, while going 9-of-12 at the line (75%)

Wickstrom has reached double-digit scoring in 40 career games with 23 outings of 20 points or more.

Wickstrom was one of the elite scorers in the country in 2025-26, averaging 23.4 points per game, good for fifth nationally. She was named a Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year semifinalist.

The Australian international was the only player in the nation to average better than 20 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game last season.

She joined Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes, Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo and Iowa State’s Audi Crooks as the only four players in the nation with a usage rate of 34% or higher (Wickstrom – 34%), a true shooting clip of 55% (Wickstrom – 58.2%) and turnover rate under 15% (Wickstrom – 13.6%).

Much of Wickstrom’s second-year growth came from constant work in the weight room and on the court.

She is the second Boilermaker from Australia, as well as the second from Melbourne, after Abbey Ellis (2022-24), who was the first transfer in program history to amass 1,000 points. The two Aussies actually talked a couple times during Wickstrom’s recruitment before she chose Purdue.

Much of Wickstrom’s balance and agility came from doing ballet and gymnastics when she was a kid.

She wears No. 7 for her father, who wore the same number during his professional career in Australia.

JB FOR 3

Sophomore guard Jelena Bulajić joined Purdue during the offseason after spending her freshman campaign at South Florida, alongside assistant coach Bojan Jankovic.

Bulajić is averaging 17 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.

She set career highs in points (17), rebounds (7), assists (6) and minutes (37) in the season opener against IU Indy.

Prior to averaging 4.7 points per game with the Bulls, the first player from Montenegro in Purdue history had extensive experience representing her country.

She earned her first senior team call-up for the 2025 EuroBasket and its qualifiers.

In seven junior events at various age levels, Bulajić averaged 12.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists.

In the 2025 U18 EuroBasket, she finished fifth in scoring with 16.0 points per game,

She averaged a career-best 21.1 points per game in the 2024 U18 B event, ranking third in scoring, winning MVP honors and guiding her team to the tournament title.

Back in Montenegro, she spends time at her parents’ coffee shop that overlooks the Adriatic Sea.

KYN CAN PLAY

Kyndall Hunter is the experienced veteran of the roster in her sixth year of college basketball. She joined the Boilermakers after playing 29 games with 16 starts at Houston in 2025-26.

Hunter was a vocal leader throughout summer workouts to accelerate the international newcomers’ growth.

She played two years at Texas A&M. Hunter was the only addition to the roster this season that had previous experience at Mackey Arena. Her 2023-24 Aggie squad lost to Purdue 72-58, but Hunter was out for the year due to injury.

She was a McDonald’s All-American in 2021 alongside high school teammate Rori Harmon. The duo spent two years together at Texas.

Off the court, Hunter spends time playing with her mini poodle Pluto and building LEGOs.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Kicking off the month of November, Purdue Football returns home to host Maryland for the annual Homecoming game. The Big Ten matchup begins at 12:30 p.m. ET on BTN.

QUICK HITS

The Boilermakers are 54-45-4 in Homecoming games with Saturday marking the 104th edition.

David Bell, a 2021 All-American and one of the best wide receivers in program history, will serve as Purdue’s honorary captain for Saturday’s Homecoming contest.

Purdue defeated Maryland 40-14 in the 2019 Homecoming game.

The Purdue defense has held opposition scoreless on their opening drives of the second half for five straight games.

The Boilermakers are outscoring opponents 50-30 in the third quarter this season.

Purdue is 32-of-34 in the red zone this season (21 touchdowns, 11 field goals), which includes scoring on the last 14 straight trips to the area. The 94.1 scoring percentage ranks ninth in the country and third in the Big Ten.

Jacobo Echeverria Lozano leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth in the country with 16 made field goals. His 94.1 field goal percentage ranks fourth nationally among those with a minimum of 15 attempts.

Quarterback Ryan Browne (Manning Award Watch List) ranks third in the Big Ten and 23rd nationally in passing yards.

Fame Ijeboi (Doak Walker Award Watch List) leads the Purdue rushing attack, ranking third in the Big Ten and 16th nationally with nine rushing touchdowns.

Asaad Waseem (Biletnikoff Award Watch List) averages 81.5 receiving yards per game to rank sixth in the Big Ten, on pace for the highest average by a Boilermaker receiver since All-American Charlie Jones (New York Giants) in 2022.

Fame Ijeboi is one rushing touchdown away from becoming the first Boilermaker with 10 rushing TDs in a season since Markell Jones in 2015.

Bisi Owens leads the nation with two blocked punts this season (vs. Indiana State, last week at Penn State).

With 16 made field goals on the season, Jacobo Echeverria Lozano has tied the Purdue record for made field goals by a freshman alongside Travis Dorsch (1998).

Scoring 236 points already this year (29.5 ppg), Purdue has surpassed its total scoring from each of the past two seasons (189 in 2024, 225 in 2025).

HOMECOMING HISTORY

Saturday’s game will be Purdue’s 104th Homecoming game.

The Boilermakers are 54-45-4 in Homecoming contests.

Purdue is facing Maryland for the second time on Homecoming. The Boilermakers cruised past the Terps 40-14 in the 2019 Homecoming game.

Saturday marks just the fourth time over the past 50 years that the annual Homecoming is taking place in the month of November.

HONORARY CAPTAIN

All-American wide receiver David Bell (2019-21) will serve as Purdue Football’s honorary captain for Saturday’s Homecoming game.

As a Boilermaker, the Indianapolis native set a new Purdue record with 17 career 100-yard receiving games, which included seven during his 2021 All-American season.

He ranks in the school’s all-time Top 10 for receptions (4th-232), receiving yards (5th-2,946) and receiving touchdowns (T-5th-21) for a career. Bell paced Purdue in receiving yards all three seasons.

Along with his All-America honors, Bell was a finalist for the 2021 Biletnikoff Award as one of the best receivers nationwide. He earned the 2021 Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year as the best receiver in the Big Ten, leading the conference in catches per game (8.5) and receiving yards per game (116.9), while ranking second and fourth in the country, respectively.

Following his collegiate career, Bell was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns (99th overall pick).

SHIBEST’S SUPERB SPECIAL TEAMS

Special teams coordinator James Shibest has his unit playing superb week in and week out.

Under Shibest’s guidance, freshman Jacobo Echeverria Lozano has become one of the best kickers in the country by connecting on 16-of-17 attempts to rank sixth nationally.

Purdue has blocked two punts on the season, just behind Wisconsin and Sacramento State for the most in the country. Bisi Owens blocked both punts to serve as the nation’s individual leader.

Last week at Penn State, Owens blocked a punt with fellow wide receiver Jalil Hall picking it up and returning it for a touchdown. It marked Purdue’s first blocked punt for a touchdown since Sept. 6, 2008 against Northern Colorado when Frank Haliburton blocked a punt and Mike Conway returned the ball 11 yards for a score.

Purdue also ranks 18th in the nation in net punting (42.5).

HE’S YA BOI, IJEBOI

Fame Ijeboi has made an immediate impact for Purdue after transferring from Minnesota, becoming one of the leaders on the offensive side of the ball.

With 588 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the year, he ranks third in the Big Ten and ranks 16th nationally in rushing touchdowns.

He is one rushing TD away from becoming the 22nd Boilermaker to record double-digit rushing touchdowns in a season and the first since Markell Jones in 2015. Ijeboi has a pair of three-touchdown games this season, the first Boilermaker to accomplish the feat since Kory Sheets in 2008.

With a receiving touchdown to his credit, Ijeboi’s 10 total touchdowns this season are the most by a Boilermaker through the first seven games of a season since Sheets in 2008.

Ijeboi had the best game of his career against his former team, running for 195 yards and three scores to lead Purdue to a 28-point win over Minnesota. It was the 15th-best rushing game in terms of yardage in program history as well as the most by a Boilermaker since 2017. He became the second Boilermaker this century to total at least 195 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Against Wake Forest, Ijeboi finished with 114 rushing yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns. Ijeboi also added six receptions for 42 yards. Finding the end zone three times, he became the first Boilermaker with three rushing touchdowns in a game since D.J. Knox helped Purdue knock off No. 2 Ohio State in the famous Tyler Trent Game (Oct. 20, 2018).

In his first game as a Boilermaker, Ijeboi racked up 87 yards and a touchdown while averaging a staggering 7.9 yards per carry to help Purdue roll past Indiana State.

PUTTING UP POINTS

The Purdue offense has put up points throughout the season, averaging 29.5 points per game, on pace for the team’s highest scoring average since 2018.

Through eight games, the Boilermakers have already surpassed their entire season points total from each of the past two seasons.

The Boilermakers scored 38 points against UCLA. In their other four Big Ten games, the Bruins have surrendered a combined 35 points by the opposition.

PFF GRADING JOJO & DON

Both Jojo Hayden and Don Saunders have been bright spots for the Boilermakers’ defense, and PFF proves the impact of this duo.

Hayden earned an 84.2 defensive grade and 81.6 run defense grade against Penn State. The defensive grade was the second-highest of his career, while the run defense grade was his fourth best.

The transfer from Illinois continues to grow as the season progresses with at least an 84.2 and 81.6, respectively, in two of the last three games.

Saunders was targeted just three times against the Nittany Lions and allowed only one catch for three yards to earn an 82.2 defensive grade.

The transfer from Utah has now put up three performances of at least 80.5 overall defensively this season.

2 FOR 92

Curt Neal recorded a pair of full sacks against Penn State for his first career game with multiple sacks and tackles-for-loss.

His two sacks came on back-to-back drives on third down in the third quarter to force Penn State field goal attempts. His first sack, a seven-yard loss, was credited on an intentional grounding that forced a 55-yard field goal that came up short.

Neal is the first Boilermaker with at least 2.0 sacks in a quarter against an FBS opponent since Khordae Sydnor on Nov. 18, 2023, only the second since Evan Panfil on Oct. 15, 2016 against Iowa.

FORCING TURNOVERS

Purdue forced five Washington turnovers on a Friday night in Ross-Ade (Oct. 16). The five turnovers (four on defense, one on special teams) by the Huskies were the most forced by the Boilers in a game since Oct. 21, 2015 vs. Nebraska. The Boilermakers had three interceptions for the first time since the 2023 Old Oaken Bucket Game.

Hudauri Hines, Smiley Bradford and Jojo Hayden picked off the Washington quarterback. It was the first time since Oct. 30, 2021 that three different Boilermakers recorded an interception in a game.

Hines made his interception on the first play of the game, the first time Purdue intercepted a pass on an opponent’s first play since Garrett Hudson had a pick to open the 2017 Old Oaken Bucket Game.

PURDUE WRESTLING

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Brody Baumann and Joey Blaze were named Big Ten Preseason Wrestlers to Watch on the conference’s annual list, which released on Monday.

Baumann, ranked No. 22 in the country at 174 pounds, returns for his final season after becoming a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier last March. The Evansville native is one of just three wrestlers from Indiana to qualify for the past three national tournaments.

The fifth-year grappler started the season with an impressive 19-4 technical fall (3:42) in Sunday’s season opener against Kent State, securing bonus points to help Purdue clinch head coach Tony Ersland’s 100th career victory.

Blaze, ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds, is coming off a second-straight All-American season in which he placed sixth at the NCAA Championships. After also finishing as the national runner-up in 2025, Blaze is Purdue’s first back-to-back All-American since Ben Wissel (2005-06).

After being named a preseason wrestler to watch last year as well, Blaze posted just the fourth undefeated regular season by a Boilermaker in the past half-century, doing so in his first season competing at 165 pounds. The Perrysburg, Ohio, senior aspires to become Purdue’s fifth national champion and first since 1992. Since he never redshirted, Blaze will have one more year of eligibility after the 2026-27 season.

Blaze is also 1-0 after scoring a team-high 21 points with seven takedowns in a dominant tech fall on Sunday. His 21 points were the most by any Big Ten wrestler in a Week 1 dual.

After opening the season with a victory over the Golden Flashes on Sunday, the Boilers will head to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a unique opportunity to compete on the top deck of the USS Yorktown CV-10 aircraft carrier.

In the annual event dubbed “Throwdown on the Yorktown”, Purdue will wrestle a pair of duals against Air Force (2:30 p.m. ET) and The Citadel (5 p.m.). The matches will be streamed live on FloWrestling.

PURDUE WOMEN’S SOCCER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers begin their journey to a conference tournament title in St. Louis with a top-25 matchup against the No. 21 Penn State Nittany Lions.

In the final Big Ten standings, the matchup will be a No. 6 seed (Penn State) vs. a No. 3 seed (Purdue).

The Boilermakers finished the regular season 15-2-2 overall and 9-2-1 in Big Ten play, marking one of the most historic years for the program. The nine Big Ten victories broke a program record for the Boilers, which included victories over No. 21 Michigan and No. 2 Michigan State, along with taking back the Golden Boot trophy from Indiana.

Jaiden Anderson has led the way for the Boilermakers all year. The junior finished the regular season second in the nation in goals scored with 18 total, leading Purdue to a nation-leading offense, scoring 3.47 goals-per-match. Anderson was named the Big Ten Forward of the Year, along with First Team All-Big Ten honors.

Purdue and Penn State will face-off in the final match of the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 8:00 p.m. est. at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Mo. All quarterfinal matches will be available for streaming on B1G+, with the semifinal and championship rounds streaming on the Big Ten Network.

With a victory, Purdue would face off with the winner of No. 7-seeded Wisconsin vs. No. 2-seeded UCLA on Sunday, Nov. 8 in the semifinals.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

The Nittany Lions post a 9-3-5 overall record and a 7-2-3 record in Big Ten play. Since the Boilers and Nittany Lions faced off in a 2-2 draw in early October, Penn State went undefeated against unranked programs, while falling on the road to No. 13 Washington, tying with No. 24 Michigan, and claiming victory on the road at No. 5 Michigan State.

Aubrey Kulpha led the Penn State offense all year, finishing the regular-season with eight goals (No. 10 in the Big Ten) with three of those goals coming as game-winners (No. 9 in the Big Ten). As the goalkeeper, Mackenzie Gress has recorded 58 saves, only allowing 13 goals to sneak past, ranking Gress at No. 4 in the conference.

 SERIES HISTORY

Purdue and Penn State have faced off 25 times in each program’s history. Penn State has dominated the series, allowing Purdue only one victory and four draws. The lone victory for the Boilers came in the 2003 campaign, in a 3-1 win in West Lafayette. Just over a month ago, the two teams tied in a 2-2 draw at Penn State.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — When Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman studies the defensive tape of No. 1 Miami, he sees a lot of similarities to the unit that powered the Hurricanes to last season’s national championship game.

Defensive end Armondo Blount reminds Freeman of first-round draft picks Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor. Freeman calls Marquise Lightfoot and Damon Wilson Jr. “dynamic” pass rushers. And, of course, Freeman remembers how difficult it was to open holes against defensive tackles Ahmad Moton Sr. and Justin Scott in the 2025 season-opener.

So Freeman recognizes just how critical it will be for the Fighting Irish to meet the challenge when No. 4 Notre Dame hosts Miami as one of college football’s most heated rivalries is renewed.

“Their defense is their identity,” Freeman said. “They’re going to be aggressive to stop the run. They’re going to play some zone (coverage) early, and if you have some success, they’ll turn it into man and go pressure. It’s a disciplined team. They play hard and that’s the thing probably more than anything, you see a group that plays extremely hard.”

The Irish counter with four returning starters along the offensive line, turning a star-studded showdown into a good, old-fashioned donnybrook, likely to be decided up front.

The tale of the tape is impressive.

While C.J. Carr has thrown 222 passes, Notre Dame’s offensive line has allowed only two sacks. Miami’s defensive line, meanwhile, allows the fewest yards rushing per game, 69.8, in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The line play is one of the big reasons the Hurricanes (8-0, 6-0 ACC, No. 1 CFP ) and the Fighting Irish (7-1, No. 11 CFP) are chasing yet another national championship trophy.

Just how critical could the line play be?

“They’ve got a veteran group of guys that do a really good job protecting him (Carr),” Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman said while lauding the Irish line. “He has made his way out of sacks this year, but I think he’s taken one or two sacks all year. I think he’s like 18 touchdowns to one pick on the year. They do a really good job moving the ball.”

The question is whether that will continue against an aggressive Miami defense loaded with NFL talent.

Lightfoot forced a key second-half fumble and registered seven tackles and two sacks in last week’s closer-than-expected win over North Carolina. He has seven sacks and an astounding 31 quarterback pressures this season. And while Moten and Scott have held up in the middle all season, Lightfoot understands what the Canes are up against.

“We know they have a great line, a great quarterback, and just a great scheme,” he said.

It could be an even bigger challenge for Notre Dame, and starting guard Anthonie Knapp relishes the challenge.

“As a player that’s that strong and that good, (Moten) is going to keep giving you challenges,” Knapp said. “You can’t take your foot off the gas. He’s played a lot of football. He understands football. He knows where to put himself in the best position to win.”

The Irish are hoping they can do the same thing by establishing an effective ground game on early downs while protecting Carr in passing situations. And Knapp has played a key role in that success so far this season by making a virtually flawless move to guard after starting 27 games at tackle.

So far, things have worked out well for Knapp and the Irish offensive line.

“I’ve really been pleased with seeing those guys play vertically, play on the other sideline of scrimmage,” Freeman said. “It takes time. It takes reps. It takes game reps. It takes failure to understand what it takes to have success.”

Notre Dame learned one lesson with its loss at No. 8 BYU in October. That’s on top of the lesson they learned last year when they missed the playoffs after losing to Miami 27-24 in the opener and the following week to Texas A&M.

And this will be Notre Dame’s biggest and most important test yet. So on a day the Irish will honor their late coach, Lou Holtz, the Irish want to take care of business by following their season-long motto — leave no doubt.

“They’ve got a great, a really a good team. That’s why they’re the No. 1 team in the country,” Freeman said. “We’re excited for the opportunity, but we’ve got to understand our key and our formula for success — that’s the way we prepare. So we’ve got to continue to double down on that and realize Saturday will be here before we know it.”

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – True freshman running back Jonaz Walton has been selected as a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Semifinalist.

So far this season, Walton leads the team with 6.9 yards per carry and is second on the team with 477 rushing guards and tied for second with four touchdowns on the ground. He’s also caught five passes out of the backfield for 70 yards.

Walton, who is one of 14 freshmen on the list, was named the Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week back on October 13th following his record-breaking performance against Stanford, which included a Notre Dame true-freshman record 181 yards on just 13 carries (13.9 yards per carry). On the first play of the second quarter against the Cardinal, Walton broke through the line of scrimmage and raced 97 yards for a touchdown, the third-longest play in Notre Dame Stadium history and the second-longest rush by an Irish true freshman in program history. He became just the fifth Irish true freshman since 1972 to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games and the first since Josh Adams in 2015.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ATLANTA – Senior guard Hannah Hidalgo has been selected to the 2026-27 Preseason Wade Watch List, which honors the top player in NCAA Division I college women’s basketball and is selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

One of just 15 players selected to the watch list, Hidalgo enters her senior season at Notre Dame as one of the nation’s premier players after putting together one of the most statistically dominant seasons in college basketball history a year ago. She led the ACC in scoring at 25.3 points per game and the nation in steals at 5.6 per game, while averaging 6.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per contest. She is the only men’s or women’s college basketball player this century to average at least 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals per game. Her 202 steals set an NCAA single-season record.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wade Trophy. One of the players on the preseason watch list, or a player who may earn their way onto the watch list over the next three months will be presented with the 50th Wade Trophy this April in Columbus, Ohio.

Following a season-opening win over Villanova in Rome last Sunday, the Irish return to Purcell Pavilion for their home opener on Friday, Nov. 6, hosting Stonehill at 7 p.m.

QUICK HITS

The Irish are in year two of the Brock Sheahan (‘08) era, as the alum took over as Catalino Family Head Hockey Coach of his alma mater prior to the 2025-26 season, becoming the fifth head coach in the program’s modern history.

Junior goaltender Nicholas Kempf was named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week on Oct. 13 following his impressive opening weekend performances in wins over Niagara.

The Irish opened the 2026-27 campaign with a sweep of Niagara to start the year.

Seventeen Notre Dame players registered at least one point this season.

Evan Werner and Danny Nelson are tied for the lead in points with six apiece. Werner has four goals and two assists and Nelson has two goals and four assists.

For the second straight season Henry Nelson scored the first Fighting Irish goal of the year.

Sammy Nelson became the first Notre Dame true freshman to score a goal in the season opener since Hunter Strand did so to open the 2021 season against LIU.

The current Irish roster features nine NHL draft picks with Beckham Edwards’ selection by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft marking the 100th individual in program history to be drafted.

Other draftees include Brennan Ali (DET ‘22), Danny Nelson (NYI ‘23), Paul Fischer (STL/EDM ‘23), Cole Brown (NJD ‘23), David Klee (SJS ‘23), Nicholas Kempf (WSH ‘24) Hagen Burrows (TBL ‘24) and Will Belle (TOR ‘25).

NOTRE DAME vs. PENN STATE

The Irish and Nittany Lions have met 47 times previously, with the Irish owning a 25-14-8 record all-time.

The Irish hold a narrow lead over Penn State when playing in State College, holding a record of 9-8-5.

The most recent series was highly competitive with the two teams playing to a 3-3 standstill in the opener followed by a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory for the Fighting Irish in the Saturday finale on Feb. 27.

Danny Nelson was effective against the Nittany Lions last season, registering five points over the four meetings with two goals and three assists.

Teammates Evan Werner and Brennan Ali also added two points apiece with a goal and an assist.

RETURNING POINTS LEADER

Notre Dame’s top point producer from the 2025-26 season has picked up right where he left off, as Evan Werner currently leads the Irish with six points off four goals and two assists this season.

Werner scored twice in game two against Niagara, which was his fourth multi-goal game with the Irish.

Last season Werner recorded a career-high 34 points last year to pace the Fighting Irish.

Werner posted career-highs in both goals and assists with 17 apiece.

The junior posted his first career hat trick in his first season with the Fighting Irish with three goals against Wisconsin.

Werner also finished the season with three games of four points (St. Lawrence – 10/16/25, Wisconsin – 2/6/26, Ohio State – 3/5/26).

The Texas native recorded multiple points in seven games during the 2025-26 campaign.

Werner has 81 career points off 36 goals and 45 assists in his collegiate career.

THE NELSON TRIO

Notre Dame features three brothers on this season’s team as Henry (oldest), Danny (middle) and Sammy Nelson (youngest) will all see plenty of ice for the Irish during the 2026-27 campaign.

Each of the three brothers recorded a point in the season-opening win over Niagara as Henry and Sammy scored while Danny picked up an assist.

The three brothers have combined for nine points this season (Henry 1-0-1, Danny 2-4-6, Sammy 1-1-2).

Danny finished his junior season tied for second on the team in goals with 13 while adding 16 assists for 29 points.

Danny scored seven of his goals on the power play to rank 12th in the country for power play goals. He enters this season with 14 power play goals in his career which ties him for the fourth most in the country of active players at the DI level.

Henry played in all 37 games for the Fighting Irish during his junior season in South Bend.

The defenseman posted a career-high 13 points, coming from three goals and 10 assists.

Henry scored goals against Arizona State, St. Lawrence and Bowling Green.

Sammy is the most highly touted of the three brothers, as he is a projected first round pick in the 2027 NHL draft.

The freshman spent the last two seasons with the USNTDP, helping the US win two 5 Nations tournaments during his time in the program.

Sammy recorded 54 points over 58 games with the USNTDP U18 team during the 2025-26 season prior to joining the Irish.

FISCHER ANCHORS THE BLUE LINE

Senior Paul Fischer has been a mainstay for the Irish as a defenseman, logging 111 career games over his four years in South Bend.

Fischer found the back of the net in the season-opening win over Niagara for his first point of the 2026-27 season.

The blueliner has 64 career points off 11 goals and 53 assists.

Fischer ranks tied for fifth among all active defensemen at the DI level.

Fifty-three of the 64 points come from assists, ranking tied for fifth among all active defensemen for career assists heading into the 2026-27 campaign.

The senior is coming off his most productive season in South Bend, as he posted career highs in goals (6) and points (23) in the 2025-26 campaign.

2026-27 CAPTAINS

KEMPF BACK IN GOAL

Junior shot stopper Nicholas Kempf is back between the pipes for Notre Dame in the 2026-27 campaign.

In the home sweep of Niagara the netminder combined to make 50 saves while allowing just one goal for a stellar save percentage of .980.

NHL NOTES

When opening night rosters were submitted by all 32 NHL teams, the Irish were highlighted on six, including Anders Lee and Andrew Peeke both on the Utah Mammoth.

In total, nine former Irish student-athletes have appeared on NHL rosters during the 2026-27 season.

Those alumni include Bryan Rust (PIT), Ian Cole (CHI), Jake Evans (MTL), Dennis Gilbert (BUF), Cole Knuble (PHI), Anders Lee (UTA), Kyle Palmieri (NYI), Andrew Peeke (UTA) and Spencer Stastney (EDM).

The Irish had 18 alumni invited to NHL training camps in September, including three individuals from the 2025-26 roster.

Notre Dame’s co-captain a season ago, Michael Mastrodomenico made his training camp debut with the Los Angeles Kings last month after signing his first professional contract with the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League.

Forward Cole Knuble made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 19 after being called up by the organization. In his second game with the Flyers, Knuble scored the first two goals of his NHL career and was named the First Star of the Game.

Forward Sutter Muzzatti made his training camp debut with the Detroit Red Wings in September after signing an entry level contract with the organization in August.

The 18 Irish alums represent 15 different NHL teams, with the Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks and Utah Mammoth all boasting multiple individuals with Irish ties.

FAMILY TIES

The 2026-27 Notre Dame roster features quite a few family connections to the program and hockey world. One set of brothers is currently on the roster, in Henry, Danny and Sammy Nelson, while one other current player had brothers suit up for the Irish in the past.

Carter Slaggert’s two older brothers Graham and Landon played their collegiate careers with the Irish and both now compete at the professional level.

The Irish have had 17 sets of brothers lace up their skates together for the Irish. Henry and Danny Nelson are in their fourth year as teammates at Notre Dame while Carter Slaggert appeared alongside his older brother Landon during his freshman season.

Slaggert joined the Irish in 2023-24, becoming the third Slaggert brother to appear in a game for the Irish. Oldest brother Graham currently plays in the Buffalo Sabres organization and skated two years alongside middle brother Landon before graduating. Landon was a 2024 graduate of Notre Dame and made his NHL debut for the Chicago Blackhawks in March 2024.

The Slaggerts are part of the fifth set of father-son combinations to suit up for the Irish, joining their father Andy Slaggert.

Senior Paul Fischer is the nephew of Mike Gearen, a member of the first varsity hockey team at Notre Dame. Fischer honors his uncle by wearing his number during his career with the Irish, No. 16.

Irish forward David Klee, a sophomore transfer in 2026-27, hails from NHL bloodline as his dad Ken Klee spent 14 seasons in the league while playing in 934 regular season games.

Klee’s brothers also played hockey at the collegiate level as Garrett played at Northern Michigan and Mason played at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Ohio State.

Maddox Fleming’s two sisters will lace up their skates this season for their respective NCAA Division I programs. Sister Delaney is a senior on the Cornell University women’s hockey team while Sawyer is a sophomore on the Princeton women’s hockey team.

SHEAHAN AND HIS STAFF

The Catalino Family Head Hockey Coach was elevated to his new role on March 17, 2025, becoming the fifth head coach in program history.

Sheahan is a 2008 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, having competed for the Irish from 2004-08. The defenseman appeared in 161 career games for the Irish and served as an alternate captain in his senior season.

The Irish alum was a member of the team’s first-ever NCAA Frozen Four and National Championship appearances, helping lead the team to the 2008 NCAA Frozen Four.

Sheahan is joined on the bench by Mike Garman, Andrew Oglevie and Tristan Musser.

Sheahan and Garman coached together for multiple years in the USHL while on staff with the Chicago Steel. Upon Sheahan’s departure to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League in 2022, Garman took over as head coach of the Steel.

Oglevie returned to his alma mater after two years as an assistant coach at Colorado College. He previously served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Irish during the 2022-23 campaign and has an emphasis on player development in his role with the Irish.

Musser joined the Irish after a stint in Buffalo serving five years as a scout for the Sabres organization.

He reunited with Sheahan and Garman who all coached together with the Chicago Steel from 2018-20, winning the Anderson Cup in 2019-20, awarded to the USHL’s regular season champions.

INDIANA STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men’s basketball heads to Muncie, Ind. and Worthen Arena as the Sycamores travel to take on Ball State on Friday, November 6. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be carried live on ESPN+ and 105.5 The Legend.

Recapping Last Game

Karmani Gregory and Duce Paschal combined for 27 second-half points for Indiana State in their 2026-27 season debut, but the Sycamores were unable to answer a late Charlotte three-point barrage on opening night inside the Hulman Center in Monday evening’s 78-70 loss to the 49ers.

Trailing 50-43 following an Arden Conyers three-pointer after a Sycamore turnover, Maguire Mitchell jumpstarted the Indiana State offense with a three-pointer at the 12:05 mark to cut the deficit down to four points. Dorian Finister connected on a layup on Charlotte’s next trip down the court to make it a six-point game, before Paschal drove the lane for back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit down to 52-50 with 9:37 to play.

Gregory added a layup to keep it a two-point game at 54-52 and Paschal added a trio of free throws to keep the game within one possession at 56-55 with 7:00 to play. The momentum stayed with the Sycamores as Paschal stripped the ball from Keyshuan Tillery and passed ahead to Gregory for the short jumper at the 6:27 mark to give the Sycamores the 57-56 lead.

Tillery immediately swung the advantage back to Charlotte on the ensuing possession with an assist on Frank Oguche’s three-pointer, before draining back-to-back threes to put the 49ers back ahead 65-57. The Sycamores battled back throughout the remainder of the contest, but another Tillery three-pointer at the 2:53 mark put the score at 72-65. Finister hit the biggest shot of the night with a three-pointer from the left wing with 1:03 remaining to seal the game and secure the eventual 78-70 win.

Karmani Gregory finished the contest with an Indiana State-high 29 points and eight assists, shooting 11-of-22 from the floor, while adding three rebounds. Mitchell added 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Paschal scored nine points and had a team-high five rebounds off the bench. Jackson Cooper added eight points and two assists on the floor.

20-Point Indiana State Debuts

Karmani Gregory continued a recent trend for Indiana State players making their Sycamore debut as the senior guard scored a game-high 29 points against Charlotte on November 2 inside the Hulman Center. The 29-point game tied a collegiate career-high set back on February 7, 2026, against Charleston Southern while the Palmetto, Fla. native played for USC Upstate.

Gregory’s 29-point game in the season opener marked the fourth consecutive season an Indiana State player scored 20 or more points in their inaugural game with the Sycamores dating back to the start of the 2023-24 season.

Last Four Seasons with 20+ Point Debuts

Attacking the Paint

Indiana State men’s basketball took the ball inside the paint to open up the 2026-27 season with the Sycamores outscoring the 49ers 36-26 in the lane on Monday night. The 10-point advantage was a part of the Sycamores’ efforts inside the three-point line as Indiana State shot 21-of-41 (51.2%) on two-pointers through the first game of the year.

The points inside the paint category marked the second consecutive game the Sycamores topped their opponent in the category after outscoring Rose-Hulman 42-22 in the exhibition game. Over the first game of the regular season, the Sycamores are 31st in the NCAA Division I in percentage of points scored inside the three-point line at 60.0% overall.

Don’t Turn It Over

One note from Indiana State’s season-opening game against Charlotte was turnovers, or lack thereof. The Sycamores turned the ball over twice in the first 90 seconds of the game, and then just five times over the final 38:30 of the contest on their way to holding possession against the 49ers. Indiana State did not turn the ball over the final 10:49 in the game, with their final two turnovers coming on offensive fouls that gave Charlotte possession.

After scoring Sunday’s game-winner and placing all three of her shots on goal, Pochocki was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. It was Pochocki’s first career weekly OVC honor.

On Wednesday, the OVC announced its postseason awards. USI was represented on the All-OVC Second Team by Schut and Schwalbach. Schut landed on the All-OVC Second Team for the second year in a row, while Schwalbach earned her first career accolade.

Schut leads the team with six points on three goals scored as one of six different goal scorers this season for the Screaming Eagles. Senior forward Eva Boer paces USI with 33 shots and is tied for a team-best two assists alongside Krakowski. Pochocki is second in shots with 28 and tops the squad with 18 on goal.

Schwalbach played every minute in goal this season for the Screaming Eagles. The netminder finished the regular season second in the OVC with a 1.06 GAA and the second-most shutouts (7). Schwalbach’s 73 saves ranked third in the conference. Within OVC play, Schwalbach tied for first in the OVC with a 0.43 GAA and for the fewest goals allowed (3).

USI is in its fifth consecutive OVC Tournament and has a 2-4 record. Last season, USI won its first-ever OVC Tournament matches to advance to the semifinals.

Western Illinois jumped over Morehead State to grab the No. 7 seed after concluding its regular season with an impressive 1-0 road win at Lindenwood University on Sunday. Senior forward Rita Moran scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 32nd minute against the Lions, and the Leathernecks held on for the rest of the match. Moran’s goal gave her a season-high 10 points.

The Leathernecks also had two All-OVC Second-Team selections. Senior forward Claire Brown earned a nod with four points off one goal and two assists this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Mahe-Lee Caron received all-conference laurels after recording 100-plus saves and two shutouts in 14 starts.

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball opens its 2026-27 road schedule Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when the Screaming Eagles battle Kansas State University at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas.

Thursday’s contest is the first-ever meeting between the two programs and will stream on ESPN+ and air on The Spin 95.7 FM.

The Screaming Eagles (0-1) are coming off an 82-67 home loss on Monday in the season opener against Murray State University. USI tried to make a late push in the fourth quarter but could not overcome a fast start and hot 3-point shooting by the Racers.

Sophomore forward Channah Gannon led USI with 16 points in the opener, matching her career high from her debut game last season against Middle Tennessee State University. Gannon also added four rebounds and three blocks.

Sophomore guard Ella Bobe tallied nine points, and freshman forward Maddy Shirley netted eight points in their respective collegiate debuts on Monday. Senior guards and Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Players to Watch Sophia Loden and Tamara Ortiz scored eight and six points, respectively. Senior forward Chloe Gannon, a returning All-OVC selection and USI’s top returning scorer after averaging 13.3 points per game last season, scored seven points against the Racers.

USI is 22-30 all-time in road openers and looks to improve upon that mark Thursday with a win, which would also be the program’s 800th all-time win.

Kansas State (1-0) tipped off its season Monday with a 61-41 win against Wichita State University. The Wildcats held off a second-half charge from the Shockers to pull away in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats are starting their season with four straight home games at Bramlage Coliseum.

Senior guard Taryn Sides led Kansas State in the opener with 15 points, while freshman forward Shaila Nde was second in scoring behind Sides and nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Sides led Kansas State in scoring last season, averaging 12.4 points per game. Senior forward Nastja Claessens was second with 11.9 points per game. As a team, the Wildcats average nearly 70 points and allowed 67.5 points per contest in 2025-26.

Thursday’s game is the first of back-to-back games against Power-4 opponents for USI, as the Screaming Eagles will host seventh-ranked University of Louisville for a 3 p.m. tipoff at Liberty Arena.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL

Valparaiso (12-12, 4-8 MVC)

Friday, Nov. 6 – at Indiana State (9-14, 3-9 MVC) – 5 p.m. CT

Saturday, Nov. 7 – at Evansville (4-20, 1-11 MVC) – 4 p.m.

Next Up For Valpo Volleyball: It’s another weekend on the road for the Valpo volleyball team, as the Beacons complete the Hoosier State road swing this week with matches Friday at Indiana State and Saturday at Evansville.

Previously: The Beacons split their pair of matches last week in central Illinois, falling to Illinois State in four sets before sweeping Bradley.

Looking Ahead: Valpo closes the regular season next weekend at home against Drake and UNI.

Following the Beacons: Friday’s match will be broadcast on ESPN+ as part of The Valley on ESPN, while Saturday’s match will not be broadcast. Live stats will also be available for both matches via ValpoAthletics.com.

Series History: Indiana State – Valpo owns a 21-17 lead in the all-time series, including an 11-5 mark since joining the MVC. The Beacons had won five straight matchups in the series before the Sycamores earned a 3-2 win at the ARC earlier this season – a win which came despite a 25-4 second set win by Valpo.

Evansville – Valpo holds an 19-14 lead in the all-time series, but has dominated since joining the MVC in 2017, winning 14 of 18 matchups in that time. In the first meeting this season, the Beacons prevailed in four sets at the ARC, with numerous individuals posting career highs – highlighted by a 24-kill night from Jordyn Gove.

Scouting the Opposition: Indiana State – The Sycamores enter Friday’s match with a 9-14 overall record and sit at 3-9 in MVC action, coming off a 3-0 sweep of Evansville in midweek competition last week before falling in four sets to UNI. Curry Kendall (2.87 kills/set) and Kira Holland (2.86 kills/set) rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Valley in kills, while Corinne Knapp leads the conference in service aces with 0.47/set.

Evansville – The Purple Aces come into the week with a 4-20 overall record and a 1-11 mark in MVC play, having dropped their last nine matches – most recently a four-set loss on Saturday to UNI. Evansville takes on Murray State Friday evening before the matchup with the Beacons on Saturday. Savannah Gogel sits fourth among Valley players with 1.03 blocks/set, while Carsyn Kelley is third in assists with 8.67/set.

Seven Out of Eight: This weekend’s matches wrap up a stretch in which Valpo has played seven out of eight matches on the road – after playing at home on October 9, the Beacons’ match at the ARC on October 24 versus Indiana State is their only home match since then. While it’s not unusual for the program to play its entire nonconference schedule away from home, as it has done as so as recently as last year, this is the first time in program history that it is playing seven road matches in an eight-match stretch within conference action.

A Look at the Standings: With only six teams making the MVC Tournament, the Beacons are still in the mix for a tournament berth, but face an uphill climb. Valpo currently sits two games back of UIC for the sixth spot in the conference standings with four to play, and should it reach or surpass UIC, would also need to finish with a better record than Southern Illinois, as the Salukis won the only regular season matchup.

Clean Play: Valpo snapped its losing streak with its sweep last Saturday at Bradley thanks in large part to playing error-free volleyball. The Beacons committed just 16 attack errors, nine fewer than the Braves, and only eight of those were non-block errors – their second-lowest total within Valley play. Valpo also avoided mistakes on both sides of the service game. When it came to delivering the serves, it committed just two service errors — its second-lowest total this year. Meanwhile, on the reception side, the Beacons received 57 serves without committing an error. It was the first time this season Valpo has held its opponent without a service ace.

One Milestone Hit…: With her third block of the contest Oct. 22 at UIC, junior Jessica Pickett reached the 300-block milestone for her collegiate career. Pickett became the 16th player in program history to reach that milestone, and with 313 career blocks entering the week, is just 45 away from cracking the program’s career top-10 chart.

…and Another Nears: Junior Ava Helming is about to hit a milestone of her own as well. After tallying 27 kills over last weekend’s pair of matches, Helming enters this week’s action with 998 career kills, just 29 away from becoming the 21st member of Valpo’s 1,000-kill club. Helming has reached double figures in kills in 12 consecutive matches, and dating back to last season, she has tallied at least 10 kills in 16 straight regular season MVC contests. She also hit the 200-block milestone for her career last weekend as well.

25-4: It was a set unlike any other played in the rally scoring era at the ARC, as the Beacons held Indiana State to just four points in the second set of their match Oct. 24. That mark ties the fewest points Valpo has surrendered in a set (excluding fifth sets), as it previously won the opening set 25-4 at Wright State on Oct. 29, 2011. Maggie Uhwat served 16 consecutive points to close the 25-4 win over the Sycamores, a mark which according to the NCAA Record Book is tied for the 10th-most consecutive points served in D-I history.

Perhaps a Record?: Not only did Pickett reach the 300-block milestone for her career recently, she has been strong on the attack over the last two weekends as well. The junior has posted the two highest single-match kill totals of her career in that stretch, with 15 at Illinois State and 14 versus Indiana State, and has hit .429 over the last four matches. That has boosted her season hitting percentage to .368, a mark which if the season ended today would set the program single-season record for hitting percentage. Mallory Januski currently holds the record at .353, a mark which itself is 19 points higher than second place.

Play That Ace: This year’s Valpo squad has been among the best in program history in terms of service aces. The Beacons are currently averaging 1.70 aces/set, a mark which is on pace to easily smash the program’s best average in the 25-point era, which sits at 1.46 aces/set. In fact, it would approach the program’s best from the 30-point era as well (1.87 aces/set). Already this season, four individual performances and four team performances have cracked the single match top-five charts for aces, while Maggie Uhwat has already breached the program’s single-season top-five for aces in the 25-point era and is just four away from second position. As a team, the Beacons’s season total of 158 aces is already fourth-most in the 25-point era.

One-Two Punch: The combination of junior outside Jordyn Gove and junior right side Ava Helming has consistently paced the Beacons’ attack this year. Helming currently ranks third in the MVC with 3.72 kills/set, with Gove close behind her in sixth with 3.25 kills/set. Gove, who entered the season with a career high of 16 kills, has surpassed 20 kills five times already this season, including a career-best 24 kills against Evansville. Meanwhile, Helming has had four matches with at least 20 kills, including a career-best 28 kills against Cleveland State – a mark which ties the most by a Valpo player in the 25-point era.

Player of the Week: Helming was named the MVC Player of the Week Sept. 14 following a weekend in northeastern Ohio where she averaged an MVC-best 4.62 kills/set on .261 hitting, highlighted by her career-high 28-kill effort in the win over Cleveland State. It is the third MVC Player of the Week honor of Helming’s career, as she had one apiece as well in each of her first two seasons.

Capturing Crowns: Part of the volleyball program’s winning tradition has been a penchant for capturing tournament titles, and that continued in 2026, as the Beacons claimed the Chattanooga Classic on opening weekend and the WNY Invitational in the season’s fourth weekend. Valpo has won 38 in-season tournament titles since the start of the 2002 campaign. The team has won at least one tournament in 19 of those 25 seasons, and multiple tournaments 12 times. Those tournament titles have come in 14 different states.

All-Tournament Honors: The Beacons had four players receive All-Tournament Team accolades over their two tournaments which presented an All-Tournament Team:

Valpo – Jordyn Gove

Chattanooga – Gove (MVP), Ava Helming, Maggie Uhwat

This is the second consecutive season where Longo has been named to the first team, this season Longo led the Greyhounds in goals with six and ranked top-10 in the conference in goals in-conference play with six. Longo is also the only Greyhound to start every game of the last two seasons.

Walsh earns his first all-conference selection as a major contributor to the UIndy backline, totaling 1,399 minutes across 16 appearances and 15 starts. Walsh totaled at least 80 minutes in each of his 15 starts, including playing all 105 minutes of the double overtime win over Quincy.

Abrams in his first year at UIndy ranks second on the team in goals with five and top-10 in the conference in conference play with every goal coming in GLVC competition, like Longo. Abrams is one of the 10 Greyhounds this season to appear in every game.

Lammerts led the Greyhounds in goal, playing every second this season. On the year Lammerts has kept five clean sheets and led the defense to allowing 0.99 goals on average.

Sam Siegel has anchored the UIndy midfield, playing multiple roles throughout the season while appearing in every game and starting in 17. Siegel ranks second on the team in assists with four while contributing two goals. Siegel’s four assists in GLVC play ranks him amongst the top-10 in the conference.

Alejandro Zuniga has found contributions as both a starter and substitute while appearing in every game with 11 starts. He leads the conference in assists in GLVC play with six, also leading UIndy. Zuniga added two goals this season, including the game-winning goal against Quincy in the GLVC quarterfinals to secure a spot in the GLVC semifinals.

Additionally, UIndy junior Carson Nolan was one of 15 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees, tabbed as such by distinguishing themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.
