NO. 20 OREGON HANDLES NO. 12 USC AFTER LOSING STAR QB DANTE MOORE
No. 20 Oregon overcame the loss of star quarterback Dante Moore to a late hit to the head in the second quarter, earning a 41-27 win over No. 12 USC on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Moore’s replacement, Dylan Raiola, completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Ducks to their most impressive win of the season to date.
The Ducks (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) led 27-17 in the second half after Dierre Hill Jr.’s 4-yard touchdown run with 5:52 left in the third quarter.
Hill had set up his first scoring run, a 1-yard score, with a 62-yard reception on a screen pass that got Oregon inside the USC 10-yard line on its first drive of the second half.American Football
Hill ran for 63 yards with Jordon Davison providing 66 yards, including a 45-yard run, and a short score.
USC (4-1, 1-1) rallied to tie the score at 27 on a Caden Chittenden field goal late in the third quarter and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Maiava to Tanook Hines early in the fourth.
A roughing-the-passer penalty on third-and-15 kept alive a Ducks possession in the fourth quarter, and Raiola hit Dakorien Moore for a 29-yard score with 8:35 to play for a 34-27 Oregon lead.
The Trojans got the ball back and moved to midfield, but Maiava misfired on three consecutive passes, the last one broken up by Brandon Finney Jr. on fourth down. The resulting turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Ducks, who took full advantage.
A few plays after the Ducks converted a fourth-and-3, Davison ran into the end zone for a 2-yard score to effectively end the game.
Moore, touted as both a Heisman Trophy candidate when the season began as well as a possible No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, hit his head hard on the grass as a result of a shot from Desman Stephens, who was called for targeting and ejected.
Medical personnel attended to Moore for several minutes before carting him off the field and transporting him to a local hospital via ambulance. ESPN reported during the third quarter that Moore had movement in all of his extremities and was being evaluated thoroughly at Los Angeles General County Hospital, according to an Oregon football spokesperson.
Maiava passed for 342 yards with two touchdowns and a late interception, and also ran for a touchdown for USC. Kayden Wyatt-Dixon totaled seven receptions for 114 yards and a score, while King Miller led the rushing attack with 74 yards.
Oregon has won five straight meetings and nine of the last 11.

NO. 10 LSU REBOUNDS WITH CONVINCING WIN OVER NO. 23 TEXAS A&M
Sam Leavitt passed for 312 yards and two touchdowns, with Jackson Harris on the receiving end for 163 yards and both scores, and No. 10 LSU whipped No. 23 Texas A&M 35-6 on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La.
Leavitt injured his left calf during the first half and kept playing while hobbled and completed 17 of 23 passes with one interception, connecting with Winston Watkins Jr. five times for 107 yards for the Tigers (3-1, 1-1 SEC).
Landen Clark relieved Leavitt at times in the second half and ran for two short touchdowns as LSU bounced back from a 32-24 loss at then-No. 8 Ole Miss last Saturday.
Marcel Reed completed 10 of 26 passes for 106 yards with an interception for the Aggies (2-2, 0-2), who were outscored 21-3 in the third quarter after being outscored 21-0 in the third quarter of a 31-21 loss to visiting Kentucky a week earlier.
LSU forced a three-and-out on the first possession of the third quarter, and on its first possession, went for it on fourth-and-1 at its 43 and Leavitt threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Harris to expand the lead to 21-3.
Texas A&M followed suit by going for fourth-and-1 at its own 34 on the ensuing possession, but Carsyn Baker was stopped for no gain.
Leavitt completed three passes for 31 yards before Clark replaced him and ran 4 yards for a touchdown and a 28-3 lead.
On LSU’s next possession, Marcus Ratcliffe intercepted Leavitt at the Tigers’ 40, leading to David Olano’s 53-yard field goal.
Leavitt threw three completions for 60 yards to set up Clark’s 2-yard touchdown run that expanded the lead to 35-6 at the end of the third quarter.
LSU’s second possession of the game ended with Dilin Jones’ 1-yard scoring run that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Texas A&M drove to a first-and-goal at the LSU 7 midway through the second quarter, but stalled and Olano kicked a 24-yard field goal to trim the lead to 7-3.
Leavitt threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Harris to give the Tigers a 14-3 lead at halftime.

KAMARIO TAYLOR RALLIES NO. 24 MISSISSIPPI STATE PAST NO. 19 MIZZOU
Kamario Taylor threw three touchdown passes, and Fluff Bothwell added 177 yards of offense and two scores to lead No. 24 Mississippi State to a 31-24 victory over No. 19 Missouri in Starkville, Miss.
Taylor completed 27 of 38 passes for 360 yards, including a go-ahead 24-yard score to Sanfrisco Magee with 3:57 left in the game.
Mississippi State (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth, stopping each of Missouri’s four fourth-quarter possessions, including batting down a Hail Mary attempt on the final play.
Magee finished with two touchdown catches and 76 yards and Anthony Evans III had 114 receiving yards, including a 48-yard grab to set up Magee’s go-ahead score.
The Bulldogs have now started 4-0 in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1944-45. Coach Jeff Lebby has already won more SEC games this season than the one he had in his first two seasons at Mississippi State combined.
Austin Simmons threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Cayden Lee, for Missouri (3-1, 0-1). Daeden Hopkins had 3 1/2 sacks and Lee finished with 156 receiving yards for the Tigers.
Trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, Bothwell finished a 14-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 7:09 left.
After a Missouri three-and-out, Mississippi State needed five plays to go 85 yards for the go-ahead score. On second-and-8 from the 24, Taylor hit Magee in the end zone.
The Bulldogs jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, with Magee scoring on a 43-yard fly pattern and Bothwell taking in an 11-yard pass from Taylor.
Bothwell gave the look of a lead blocker on a quarterback sneak before Taylor pulled up and flipped him a jump pass near the goal line.

JADAN BAUGH SCORES 3 TDS AS NO. 21 FLORIDA KNOCKS OFF NO. 4 OLE MISS
Jadan Baugh rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns, Duke Clark rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown, Aaron Philo ran for a score and passed for another, and No. 21 Florida defeated No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28 in a Southeastern Conference clash on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.
Baugh scored his ninth, 10th and 11th touchdowns of the season, and Dallas Wilson added a touchdown on his only carry for the Gators (4-0, 2-0 SEC). Philo completed 16 of 23 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown.
Trinidad Chambliss, who rushed for a team-high 44 yards and two touchdowns with Kewan Lacy out, passed for 298 yards and a touchdown to Deuce Alexander, who finished with seven catches for 134 yards for the Rebels (3-1, 1-1 SEC).
On the first possession of the third quarter, Chambliss completed a 49-yard pass to Alexander, setting up Chambliss’ 8-yard touchdown run. Chambliss’ two-point conversion pass to Horatio Fields pulled the Rebels within 17-14.
On the fourth play of the ensuing possession, Clark ran 45 yards for a touchdown that gave the Gators a 10-point lead.
Chambliss responded with a 10-yard touchdown run that cut the lead to 24-21. London Montgomery returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards, and three plays later, Philo sneaked 1 yard for a touchdown and a 31-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Chambliss’ fumble, recovered by Myles Graham for Florida at its 43, led to Wilson’s 6-yard touchdown run. Chambliss then teamed with Alexander on a 2-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to 38-28. Philo threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Amir Jackson, and Baugh ran 2 yards for a touchdown to complete the scoring.
The Gators received the opening kickoff and drove downfield for Baugh’s 4-yard touchdown run. The Rebels’ first possession ended when JT Lindsey was stopped for a 4-yard loss on fourth-and-1, leading to Patrick Durkin’s 49-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lucas Carneiro kicked a 36-yard field goal, giving Ole Miss its first points, but the Gators answered with a 15-play, 87-yard drive that culminated in Baugh’s 2-yard touchdown run, putting the Gators up 17-3. Carneiro’s 46-yard field goal cut the lead to 17-6 at halftime.

NO. 17 IOWA STUNS NO. 18 MICHIGAN ON GAME’S FINAL PLAY
Iowa quarterback Hank Brown’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired lifted No. 17 Iowa to a dramatic 20-19 comeback win over No. 18 Michigan on Saturday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Vander Zee, who also caught a touchdown pass earlier in the game, caught the well-placed back shoulder throw and dragged his right foot just before falling out of bounds.
The Hawkeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) snapped a four-game losing streak against the Wolverines (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) and won for the first time at Michigan since 2010. Iowa beat a ranked Big Ten opponent for the first time since 2021, spanning a nine-game losing streak against such teams.
Michigan had won an FBS-best 13 of its prior 14 one-score games since 2023, including its controversial win over Western Michigan in Week 1.
The Hawkeyes’ winning drive covered 11 plays and 91 yards after forcing a punt using its timeouts and regained possession at its own 9 with 1:48 left. A personal foul call after an incomplete pass that would have put Iowa in a third-and-12 situation from its own 40 proved costly for Michigan.
Later on the drive, Iowa’s Addison Ostrenga tipped a pass down the middle from Hank Brown up in the air and caught it to give the Hawkeyes a first down at Michigan’s 16 and set up the winning score.
Brown completed 21 of 35 passes for 227 yards and two touchdown passes. Vander Zee caught five passes for 66 yards.
Iowa prevailed despite Michigan’s defense holding it to 77 total yards in the first half and only 30 yards rushing. The Hawkeyes had only 91 yards until they put together a go-ahead, seven-play, 75-yard drive capped when Hank Brown hit Reece Vander Zee over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown to take a 14-13 lead with 14:02 left in the fourth.
Bryce Underwood led Michigan, completing 17 of 28 passes for 276 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Underwood threw both touchdowns to JJ Buchanan, who finished with 130 yards on five catches. On their second touchdown connection,
Underwood rolled to his right and found Buchanan as he broke loose behind Iowa’s secondary for the 49-yard score with 11:59 left. Michigan’s lead remained 19-14 after it missed the two-point try on an errant pass by Underwood. Andrew Marsh also caught seven passes for 106 yards for Michigan.
Braeden Jackson returned a kickoff 99 yards for Iowa’s only touchdown of the first half.

NO. 1 TEXAS HOLDS OFF NO. 14 TENNESSEE
Colin Simmons tied the school record with five sacks and Raleek Brown rushed for two touchdowns as top-ranked Texas notched a 20-17 victory over No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday afternoon in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams in Knoxville, Tenn.
Arch Manning completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards and one interception for the Longhorns during his first visit to Knoxville, where his famous uncle Peyton starred for the Volunteers in the 1990s. The Longhorns recorded 10 sacks as a team while holding Tennessee to 221 total yards. Rasheem Biles tallied a team-high 13 tackles and one sack.
Brown rushed for 67 yards on 17 carries and Ryan Wingo caught six passes for 74 yards for Texas (4-0, 1-0 SEC). Simmons, who also forced a fumble, tied the longstanding school mark set by Shane Dronett in 1990 against Texas Tech.
Qua Moss returned a punt for a touchdown. Faizon Brandon was 17-of-29 passing for 145 yards and one touchdown and Mike Matthews caught a touchdown pass for the Volunteers (3-1, 0-1). Tyree Weathersby accounted for 2.5 of Tennessee’s six sacks, while Arion Carter had 11 tackles and recovered an onside kick.

No. 6 Miami 52, Central Michigan 3
Darian Mensah delivered another spectacular performance, throwing three touchdown passes and rushing for another to lead the Hurricanes to a comfortable win over the Chippewas in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Miami (4-0) won its first four games for the fourth consecutive season as Mensah completed 23 of 27 passes for 338 yards against Central Michigan (2-2), which was held to 158 total yards, including only 21 yards rushing on 25 attempts. The Hurricanes totaled 201 rushing yards without leading running back Mark Fletcher Jr.
Reserve running back Chris Wheatley-Humphrey led the way with 104 yards on 11 carries, including a 35-yard touchdown run which capped Miami’s scoring with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter. Mensah, who added a 5-yard rushing score, connected with fellow star Malachi Toney for six receptions and 120 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown.

No. 7 Ohio State 42, Illinois 19
Jeremiah Smith caught a career-high four touchdowns, three in the first half, and Julian Sayin threw for four scores and ran for another as the Buckeyes defeated the Illini in Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio State (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) led 28-10 at the half on the strength of Smith’s TDs of 7, 72 and 9 yards and Sayin’s 7-yard scamper with 15 seconds left. Smith became the first Ohio State player with three first-half touchdown receptions since Noah Brown at Oklahoma on Sept. 17, 2016. His fourth touchdown later tied the program’s single-game record, also last accomplished by Brown in that game.
Quarterback Katin Houser was 21 of 37 for 263 yards and a TD and Hudson Clement made five catches for 87 yards for Illinois (2-2, 0-1). Aidan Laughery ran for 113 yards and Jordan Anderson rushed for a 22-yard TD.

Keelon Russell threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as the Crimson Tide rolled over the Gamecocks in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Russell finished 21-of-27 passing for 365 yards with no interceptions. Ryan Coleman-Williams had five catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns for Alabama (4-0, 2-0 SEC).
LaNorris Sellers rallied South Carolina (2-2, 0-2) to within 35-18 early in the fourth and finished 18-of-30 for 185 yards, one touchdown and one pick. Matt Fuller had 19 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown for the Gamecocks, who have lost seven straight conference games dating back to last season.

Linebacker Austin Romaine returned two interceptions for touchdowns on successive plays and Cameron Dickey rushed for 91 yards and two scores as the Red Raiders routed the visiting Bearkats in Lubbock, Texas.
Romaine, a Kansas State transfer, notched his pair of defensive scores just seven seconds apart in the first minute of the second quarter. Romaine grabbed a Brett Holloway pass that was deflected by Texas Tech linebacker Brock Golwas and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown with 14:54 remaining in the quarter. Then Romaine swooped in front of a Landyn Locke pass and raced 31 yards for another TD.

Colton Joseph threw two touchdown passes in the final four minutes as the Badgers overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the Nittany Lions in University Park, Pa.
The decisive score was Joseph’s 72-yard TD pass to Jacob Harris with 1:13 left. Joseph stepped up late in a game where he was intercepted three times and completed 18 of 38 passes for 235 yards for the Badgers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten).
Penn State’s last-minute drive ended at the Wisconsin 33. Rocco Becht (12 of 29, 129 yards, one interception) was sacked on first down before throwing three straight incompletions in the waning seconds for the Nittany Lions (3-1, 0-1).

Wayshawn Parker ran for a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Utes to a victory over the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.
Parker also had 65 yards receiving and added another touchdown on five catches. He averaged 9.7 yards per carry while putting together his sixth career 100-yard game. Devon Dampier threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns as Utah (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) tallied 411 total yards.

Wake Forest’s Gabe Kirschke blocked a 57-yard field-goal attempt from Nick Keller with 18 seconds left to preserve the outcome. Quarterback Gio Lopez completed 12 of 19 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown. Nine of those completions went to Carlos Hernandez for 194 yards. Clark gained 91 yards on 21 carries.
Louisville (2-2, 1-1) had a chance to pull even earlier, but Carson Hilbert missed a 42-yarder with 2:29 left. Hilbert had drilled a 54-yarder with 42 seconds to go in the third quarter for 27-all. Lincoln Kienholz ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. He was 27 of 36 for 324 yards in the air with an interception.

Jennings hit on 33 of 39 passes with an interception for the Mustangs (3-1). The senior became SMU’s career passing leader with 722 completions and 9,162 yards, completing a school-record 21 straight passes during the game. Yamir Knight caught 11 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs.
Missouri State jumped ahead 10-0 after Joel Boamah returned an interception of Jennings 60 yards for a touchdown. Skyler Locklear completed 15 of 19 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown for Missouri State (1-3) before being knocked out in the fourth quarter with an injury. The Mustangs outgained the Bears 592-239 but hurt themselves with a spate of mistakes. SMU was flagged 12 times for 106 yards.

After slipping three spots in the latest Associated Press poll following a 28-26 loss to then-No. 13 Texas Tech, Houston (3-1) held a two-touchdown lead after one quarter, but Weigman’s standout play helped the Cougars pull away over the final three. The senior was 17 of 22 for 239 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for two scores.
In losing its third straight game, Georgia Southern (1-3) got a strong outing from Max Johnson, a 2023 Texas A&M teammate of Weigman’s. The left-hander was 26 of 38 for 284 yards and three touchdowns. Teammate Alex Taylor had six catches for 119 yards and two scores.

Machado’s 30th homer of the season, a three-run opposite field shot off Jose Cabrera (0-4) in the fourth, gave the Padres a 6-4 lead they never lost. Jake Cronenworth had two hits and two RBIs for San Diego, which has won eight of 10 and 16 of 19 and will host the fifth-seeded Chicago Cubs in a best-of-three wild-card series starting on Tuesday.
The D-backs remain in the race for the final NL wild-card spot despite the loss but will need to win and have the Phillies lose to Tampa Bay Sunday to clinch their spot. James McCann hit a two-run homer, Tim Tawa had three hits and Ketel Marte added two hits for Arizona, which had a season-high six-game winning streak broken.

Richie Palacios drove in four runs and Victor Mesa Jr. had four hits and two RBIs as Tampa Bay crushed host Philadelphia, which has been outscored 23-3 during a four-game slide.
Griffin Jax and six relievers took care of matters on the mound for the Rays, who already have clinched the top spot in the AL playoffs. Other standouts included Junior Caminero, who slugged his 42nd homer, and Yandy Diaz, who collected three hits and scored three runs. Tampa Bay had more hits, 17-7.
In the midst of a late-season freefall, the Phillies gave the starting nod to Aaron Nola (7-12), who allowed three runs on four hits in one inning of work. Philadelphia (87-74), which entered the night with a magic number of two to clinch an NL wild-card spot, once again failed to cut into that number itself and now needs either to win or see Arizona lose Sunday in order to make its fifth straight postseason appearance.

The Astros hold the AL West tiebreaker and will win the division if they win or if the Rangers lose on Sunday. Hayden Wesneski (6-2) gave up two runs (one earned) and six hits over seven innings for Houston.

The Rangers (80-81) ended up needing this win to stay alive for postseason contention after Houston’s win later in the day but still need two results to go their way Sunday to make their first postseason appearance since 2023, when they won the World Series.

Hunter Goodman went deep twice to surpass 40 home runs and visiting Colorado eliminated Chicago from the AL Central race.
The White Sox are locked into the AL’s sixth seed for the postseason. They will start the playoffs at the AL West champion, either Houston or Texas. Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer in the ninth and Brenton Doyle and Luisangle Acuna also went deep for Chicago.
Goodman is the first National League catcher to hit at least 40 homers since 2003. He reached the mark with a solo shot in the third and added a three-run long ball in the ninth. Ezequiel Tovar homered among his two hits and Cole Carrigg added three hits for the Rockies, who snapped a five-game skid.
Tigers 4, Pirates 3
Eduardo Valencia hit a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift host Detroit to a win over Pittsburgh in Justin Verlander’s final start.
The Tigers were down 3-1 in the ninth with Verlander on the hook for the loss. Facing Pirates closer Mason Montgomery (6-4), Max Clark singled with one out and Hao-Yu Lee doubled him to third. Kevin McGonigle brought Lee in with a groundout to make it 3-2. Valencia ended the game with a homer just over the fence in left.
Verlander gave up five hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out six in 91 pitches in his first start since March 30 and his first home start with the Tigers since Aug. 20, 2017, ending his career with a 266-159 record. Brandon Lowe and Jacob Gonzalez hit solo homers off Verlander for Pittsburgh.

Ronny Mauricio homered twice, A.J. Ewing hit a three-run home run and New York beat host Washington.
Carson Benge had three hits and scored twice for New York. Juan Soto was hit by a pitch on the right hand, but postgame X-rays showed no fractures. Dedniel Nunez (2-1) struck out the side in the sixth to earn the win. Rookie Jonah Tong fanned a career-high nine in a solid five-inning start.
Nationals reliever Jake Irvin (2-10) had retired eight straight Mets entering the seventh. Benge led off with a single and, with two outs, Francisco Alvarez walked. Ewing then hit an 0-2 curve out to right-center to give the Mets a 3-1 lead. Mauricio, the next batter, followed with a homer to right.
Reds 5, Blue Jays 1
Rhett Lowder pitched six scoreless innings and visiting Cincinnati defeated Toronto.
Lowder (7-12) allowed three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. JJ Bleday hit a solo home run for the Reds, who gained a split of the first two games of the season-ending three-game set with the Jays. Hector Rodriguez added a two-run triple and went 2-for-4.
Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead against Trey Yesavage (5-6) when Bleday led off the second by pounding a 1-0 fastball to right-center for his career-best 24th homer. Yesavage, who was making his second start after arthroscopic knee surgery, allowed one run, two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in two innings.
Braves 8, Marlins 3
Michael Harris II had four hits and Dominic Smith and Drake Baldwin each hit a two-run home run, leading Atlanta to a win over host Miami as it continues to tune up for the NL wild-card series it will host starting on Tuesday.
Brent Suter started the Braves’ bullpen game and pitched three innings, allowing only one hit with three strikeouts. Victor Mederos (6-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Jack Ralston (0-3) allowed three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings as the opener for the Marlins. Otto Lopez had two hits to raise his batting average to .305 and increase his major league-leading hit total to 191. He ended the day third in the NL batting race.
Dodgers 4, Giants 3
Enrique Hernandez launched the second pitch of the ninth inning for a tiebreaking home run, Blake Snell made a healthy return to the mound and playoff-bound Los Angeles outlasted host San Francisco.
After watching the Giants twice rally into ties following 1-0 and 3-1 deficits, the Dodgers kept their hopes alive for a 100-win regular season on Hernandez’s fourth homer of the year, a no-doubt blast to left-center field against Trent Harris (0-1), San Francisco’s seventh pitcher.
Tanner Scott protected the one-run lead, stranding the potential tying run at second base in the ninth by striking out Christian Koss to lock up his 25th save. Evan Phillips (3-2), who served up the Giants’ game-tying run in the eighth, was credited with the win.
Brewers 3, Cardinals 2
Brice Turang’s two-run homer provided the go-ahead run and Milwaukee’s bullpen combined for six hitless innings to preserve a victory over visiting St. Louis.
Milwaukee (102-59), which has won four straight National League Central titles, has clinched a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Brewers, who have had a winning record each month, improved to 17-6 in September.
Turang put Milwaukee in front 3-2 in the fifth with a two-run homer off Cardinals starter Quinn Mathews (2-4). Alec Burleson put St. Louis up 2-0 in the third with his 26th homer and third in three games, a two-out solo shot to right-center off starter Dustin May.
Mariners 8, Angels 4
Pinch hitter Taylor Ward hit a tiebreaking two-run single against his former team in the seventh inning and J.P. Crawford homered on the next pitch as Seattle defeated visiting Los Angeles.
Michael Arroyo had three hits and Cole Young scored three times. Seattle got a scare when left-hander Kade Anderson, their prized pitching prospect, was hit near his pitching elbow by a 103.8 mph liner. Anderson, who pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, was immediately taken out, and the Mariners later announced he sustained a bruised left forearm.
Mariners reliever Carlos Vargas (3-0) got the victory and Angels reliever Mitch Farris (1-4) took the loss. Los Angeles will need to win its season finale to avoid the first 100-loss campaign in franchise history. The Angels are the only major league team that has not lost 100 games in a season.

PRESIDENTS CUP DAY 4: US SENDING ITS BEST OUT FIRST TO CATCH UP
The U.S. team has ground to make up on the final day of the Presidents Cup.
With singles matches set for Sunday, some of its most accomplished golfers will be part of the early pairings in the competition vs. the International team.
Cameron Young (vs. Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune), Wyndham Clark (vs. South Korea’s Tom Kim), Justin Thomas (vs. Canada’s Corey Conners) and Scottie Scheffler (vs. Colombia’s Nico Echavarria) will be in the first four matches at Medinah Country Club’s No. 3 course outside Chicago.
“We’ve got some studs up there at the top of the lineup that are going to go out there and hopefully put a bunch of red on the board, get this crowd behind us,” U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker said. “We’ve got some studs throughout the whole lineup. We’ve got some guys in there to do what they’re meant to do.”
The International team had a strong finish to Saturday’s long day of competition, holding a 10 1/2-7 1/2 lead going into Sunday.
“Stay the course,” Snedeker said. “This golf course is difficult. It’s going to be a long, hard day (Sunday). I’ve got the right guys in that team room. They’re going to compete.”
Snedeker has been hard on himself based on the results from Friday and Saturday after the U.S. team had a strong start Thursday.
“I feel like a team reflects their captain, and to this point, I haven’t held up my end of the bargain,” he said. “We’ve got to get our heads down (Saturday night) and come out and work hard (Sunday).”
Echavarria will face Scheffler, the World No. 1. He hasn’t been pressed in pressure situations since Thursday.
“He’s a guy who seems to love the big moments,” Ogilvy said of Echavarria. “He was pretty motivated when he found out he wasn’t playing (Saturday). He’s excited to go out (Sunday). He didn’t know this was going to happen, so he’s learned this now in the team room.
“We hope he’s really excited. It’s a big opportunity for him to play the best player in the world, and we feel like he’s ready for it.”
There will be 12 total matches. The U.S. needs eight points out of the possible 12 to reach the 15 1/2 points required to win. Should the U.S. pick up early points, the final result could come down to younger players.
Rookie Jackson Koivun is in the fourth-to-last match vs. South Korea’s Si Woo Kim, while Jacob Bridgeman is next vs. Australia’s Min Woo Lee.
Russell Henley will face Canada’s Nick Taylor in the second-to-last match. The final pairing pits Xander Schauffele against New Zealand’s Ryan Fox, who was this year’s Open Championship winner.
If nothing else, Snedeker is trying to spread confidence among the U.S. golfers.
“So proud of how they’ve kind of hung in there this week despite all of my mistakes,” he said. “They’re doing great. I’m so proud of them. Can’t wait to see them go out there (Sunday) and compete.”
President Donald Trump is expected to be on hand for Sunday’s competition.

YUNA NISHIMURA CARDS ANOTHER 63; LEADS BY 5 IN ARKANSAS
Japan’s Yuna Nishimura carded her second consecutive 8-under-par 63 on Saturday and stretched her lead to five strokes over the field at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark.
Nishimura, 26, who is in search of her first LPGA Tournament victory, did make her first bogey of the weekend but more than made up for it with nine birdies to complete 36 holes at 16 under.
Auston Kim and Chinese golfers Mary Liu and Michelle Zhang all followed up 4-under-par rounds of 67 on Friday with scores of 7-under 64 on Saturday and got to the clubhouse at 11 under.
Nine players were six shots off of Nishimura’s pace, including England’s Lottie Woad and Charley Hull and 30-year old American Sophia Schubert.
Nishimura hit two fewer fairways but shaved three putts off her Friday round. For the second consecutive day, she birdied her first hole of the day — the par-4 10th. She birdied five of seven holes in the middle of the round, then closed birdie-birdie-par to position herself ideally for her first title.
“My short irons were working really well so I was able to put it close to the pin and kind of all worked out for me,” said Nishimura.
The 26-year-old Kim is right back out on the course after making her Solheim Cup debut last week. Like Nishimura, she is searching for her first career title, but she has four top-10 finishes in 2026.
After a topsy-turvy round which featured two eagles and two double bogeys on Friday, Kim produced a bogey-free round on Saturday, finishing with back-to-back birdies on her final two holes (Nos. 8 and 9).
“I hit two really bad shots (Friday) that cost me, and it’s not to say that I didn’t hit any bad shots today, but just being able to minimize the really, really bad ones,” said Kim. “Thankfully I didn’t hit a lot of those today. Just staying positive and trying to be really aggressive to my targets and make as many putts as I can.”
The former Vanderbilt golfer admits to not being “100%” this week, but she truly enjoyed her experience in the Netherlands.
“I had the time of my life with all the girls last week, and it was probably the most I’ve enjoyed playing golf and competing and just being a competitor out there,” she said.
Lauren Coughlin set an LPGA Tour record with nine consecutive birdies to begin her round, putting her in position to shatter Annika Sorenstam’s Tour record of 59 for lowest score in a round. But Coughlin birdied just once on the back nine and finished with a 10-under 61. She is tied for 21st at 8 under thanks to a first-round 73.
Miya Yamashita, also from Japan, tied Nishimura with a 63 on Saturday, but the two-time winner in 2026 carded a 70 on Friday and is seven shots behind her countrywoman.
Nishimura plans to stay calm, yet focused on her final round on Sunday.
“So it’s going to be the same thing again (Sunday), but I would like to go for 20 under…” she said. “Things are going well so I really don’t want to change anything.”
Given her play so far at the Pinnacle Country Club layout, 20 under seems like a modest goal.

JOEY LOGANO GETS KANSAS POLE AS RAIN HALTS CHASE QUALIFYING
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Joey Logano doesn’t mind that rain has played havoc with qualifying for three of the first four races in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase presented by Mobil 1.
With rain wiping out both practice and time trials for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway (3 p.m. ET on USA, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), Logano will start on the pole for the fourth postseason race.
“I’ll take rain,” said Logano, who earned the top starting spot through a combination of his victory last Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway and the position of his No. 22 Team Penske Ford in owner points.
A three-time series champion – most among full-time active drivers – Logano enters the Kansas race third in the Chase standings, 16 points behind leader Kyle Larson, who will start Sunday’s race beside Logano on the front row.
“Starting up front is always good,” Logano said. “We’ll see if we have enough pace when you’re up there. You have a lot of fast cars around you. We’ll see what we’ve got.”
Logano was first out during a scheduled practice session that was halted by rain almost before it began.
“In a perfect world, we would have gotten to practice, and it rained out qualifying,” Logano quipped. “I thought we were practicing and qualifying when I showed up at the race track this morning. The radar looked pretty good, and the forecast didn’t look that bad either.
“I thought ‘We are going to have to do it the hard way today.’ I guess it rained just enough. The curiosity is going to get the best of me, and I am going to want to know what we’ve got. But I can wait one more night. I will be OK.”
Christopher Bell and Carson Hocevar will start third and fourth, respectively, as Chase drivers occupy the first nine positions on the grid. Ty Gibbs starts fifth, followed by Denny Hamlin (who trails Larson by one point), Bubba Wallace, William Byron and Ryan Preece.
Tenth-place starter Josh Berry is the only non-Chase driver in the top 10.
Other Chase drivers will take the green flag from the following positions: Austin Cindric 11th, Chris Buescher 12th, Daniel Suarez 14th, Tyler Reddick 15th, Chase Elliott 18th, Chase Briscoe 23rd and Ryan Blaney 25th.
The qualifying rainout is particularly tough on Blaney, who will start deep in the field for the second straight week after wrecking out of the Bristol race while contesting second place with Hocevar.

NASCAR NOTEBOOK: TENSION EASES BETWEEN RYAN BLANEY, CARSON HOCEVAR
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – In the aftermath of last Saturday’s post-race fisticuffs between Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar at Bristol Motor Speedway, cooler heads have prevailed as the NASCAR Cup Series arrives at Kansas Speedway for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 (3 p.m. ET on USA, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
Blaney now says the late-race wreck that lit his fuse was more of a 50/50 racing incident, with Blaney trying to block and Hocevar refusing to lift. The end result, though, was calamity for Blaney, whose No. 12 Team Penske Ford was damaged beyond repair after contact with the outside wall.
“These things happen,” said Blaney, sporting a dark shiner under his left eye from the two right hooks Hocevar landed after Blaney shoved him on pit road. “The thing on track happens really, really fast and you making decisions in a split-second of a moment and sometimes you can be skewed or not skewed of what you think happened or what actually happened.
“And then, reflecting on it for a day, watching the incident… stuff like that was like, yeah, pretty 50-50, I thought. Just kind of a racing thing of Bristol of two guys being aggressive with the line they wanted to be in.”
Hocevar thought the brawl at Bristol might actually have a positive effect.
“This tends to be the stuff that brings people closer together, and you laugh about it,” Hocevar said. “I’ve never had a problem, really, with him on a race track. We’ve been running good together.
“I think he’s as stand-up of a guy as he could be. He could look at it and know that that was just racing and whatnot. In the heat of the moment, ever driver is going to be biased towards themselves.”
In fact, Hocevar expressed admiration for Blaney’s appearance on Denny Hamlin’s show “Actions Detrimental” – with the black eye in full view.
“I think Ryan’s one of the coolest guys in the garage,” Hocevar said. “I mean, he’s got a cool mustache, drinks whiskey and all that, right? I think he looks the part really well. I thought he made me more of a fan, honestly. When he went on there (Hamlin’s show), I had respect for that, for sure. He could have held some ice on his eye and whatnot, but he went right out there and did it, and I have the utmost respect for that.
“I didn’t want to hit him, and looking back, I 100-percent see where he wanted to maybe just throw a shove in there and then yell. I think we both saw each other, but in the moment, you’re not going to see that. You’re going to predict the worst.”
Kyle Larson prefers his new position atop Chase standings
Kyle Larson already has defied conventional wisdom.
Three races into the NASCAR Cup Series Chase presented by Mobil 1, the driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet has come from seventh to start the postseason to the top of the standings.
That’s a 56-point swing from the start of the Chase, a move many observers thought unlikely.
The only driver to score top-five finishes in all three Chase races so far, Larson claimed the series lead last Saturday with a second-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Though he’s only one point ahead of Denny Hamlin, the top seed entering the Chase, Larson says that one-point matters.
“I would always rather be one point ahead than one point behind,” Larson said on Saturday morning at Kansas Speedway. “But even going back to after the win (in the second Chase race at World Wide Technology Raceway), I think we were nine points back, and I was like, ‘OK, we’re there… we have a shot.’
“Now that you’re leading, nothing really changes, other than you’d like to not fall back. But even if you do, you still have time to make up for it. We’ll just keep plugging away. I’ve been really happy with the speed and, especially, the execution in these first three.
“I think they’ve gone pretty flawless for our team. Now we have some tracks that we probably are even more confident at than the first three, outside of Bristol. But, yeah, it’s just tough. It’s a lot of racing, a lot of tough competitors, and just a tough, tough series.”
Daniel Suarez relishes arrival of son Otto
On Tuesday, Daniel Suarez and wife Julia Piquet announced the arrival of their first child, son Otto Suarez Piquet.
The baby arrived after the due date but thankfully didn’t prevent Suarez from racing last Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“We got a little lucky there,” Suarez said. “On Saturday morning, we were at the hospital, and they told us it could happen in the next 12 hours, so I was a little bit concerned. When I went to Bristol to race, I was a little bit nervous. It was a little bit of a stress race for me, but luckily things worked out.”
Suarez was thrilled to be able to witness the birth of his son.
“It was pretty incredible,” he said. “I’ve got more respect for women, especially moms, because it’s crazy what they have to go through to give birth. Julia worked her butt off for two days to get to that point before giving birth.
“For me to get to experience it first-hand, it was very shocking, honestly. I never imagined it was going to be this tough, and it was.”
The couple picked the name “Otto” not because of a family association, but simply because they liked it.
“It’s a name that we both like and heard for the first time a few years ago,” Suarez said. “We did a little research on it, and it’s a German name that means ‘prosperity.’
“Julia is 25-percent German, so we thought it would be kind of nice to have a little something that is German. And it’s a name that we really liked.”

The Indianapolis Colts today signed wide receiver Anthony Gould to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and placed wide receiver Alec Pierce on the Injured Reserve list. The team also elevated wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.
Gould, 5-8, 174 pounds, was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad in Week 2 at Kansas City and registered four kickoff returns for 102 yards (25.5 avg.). He has played in 20 career games (one start) with the Colts (2024-26) and has recorded three receptions for 29 yards (9.7 avg.), 36 kickoff returns for 955 yards (26.5 avg.) and 23 punt returns for 226 yards (9.8 avg.). Gould was originally selected by the team in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Oregon State.
Pierce, 6-3, 211 pounds, has played in two games (one start) this season and has caught five passes for 72 yards (14.4 avg.). He has appeared in 66 career games (56 starts) in five seasons (2022-26) with the Colts and has totaled 162 receptions for 3,006 yards (18.6 avg.) and 17 touchdowns. Pierce was originally selected by the team in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati.
Westbrook-Ikhine, 6-2, 211 pounds, was signed to the team’s practice squad on August 31, 2026. He participated in Indianapolis’ 2026 offseason program and training camp after originally being signed by the team as a free agent March 18, 2026. Westbrook-Ikhine has played in 93 career games (42 starts) in his time with the Colts (2026), Miami Dolphins (2025) and Tennessee Titans (2020-24). GAME PREVIEW
The WNBA playoffs tip off Sunday and the Fever will face a familiar foe in the first round. Sixth-seeded Indiana takes on third-seeded Las Vegas in a rematch of last year’s WNBA Semifinals.
The Fever pushed the Aces to the brink in last year’s series despite missing several key players due to season-ending injuries, including All-Star guard Caitlin Clark and top reserve Sophie Cunningham. Indiana still managed to take the series to a winner-take-all Game 5 that went to overtime despite star guard Kelsey Mitchell exiting in the second half with an injury and star center Aliyah Boston fouling out in the fourth quarter.
The Aces went on to win the WNBA title for the third time in four years.
This year’s rematch comes a round earlier, in the best-of-three first round. The Fever will host Game 2 on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. If necessary, Game 3 would be on Thursday.
The Fever-Aces series features the WNBA’s top three scorers this season (and potentially three first-team All-WNBA selections). Four-time MVP A’ja Wilson led the league in scoring at 26.2 points per game, while also ranking fifth in rebounds (9.4 per game) and first in blocks (1.9 per contest). Mitchell was second in scoring at 24.7 points per game, while Clark was third at 22.3 points and second in assists (8.3 per contest).
The Fever went 2-1 against the Aces in the regular season. Interestingly, the road team won all three games. Indiana prevailed 84-68 in Las Vegas on July 5 and 109-75 on July 12. The Aces got some revenge with an 86-84 overtime win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Aug. 6, a game in which Chelsea Gray hit a buzzer-beating three to force overtime and another to win the game.
Indiana’s biggest focus will be containing Wilson on the interior. Boston has done as good a job as any player in the league of defending her fellow former South Carolina Gamecock center. Wilson is going to get her points, but the Fever’s mission is to make her work for them and not allow easy buckets.
All eyes will also be on Clark, who will be playing her first playoff game since her rookie season. Indiana was swept by Connecticut in the first round that year, so Clark is looking for her first taste of postseason success.

PURDUE FOOTBALL
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue football team fell to No. 3 Notre Dame, 49-10, in the 90th meeting between the two programs on Saturday afternoon at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Purdue quarterbacks Ryan Browne and Evans Chuba completed a combined 25-of-37 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown. Running back Fame Ijeboi led the way on the ground with 12 carries for 41 yards.
On Purdue’s final drive of the game, Chuba connected with senior receiver Bisi Owens for a 14-yard touchdown. It was the first career passing and receiving touchdown for both Chuba and Owens. Receiver Xavier Townsend led Purdue with five catches while Tra’Mar Harris paced the team with 36 receiving yards. Eleven different players made at least one catch for the Boilermakers (1-3, 0-1 B1G).
Justin Denson Jr. led the Purdue defense with eight tackles, matching his season-high tally against Wake Forest.
The Fighting Irish (4-0) held a 35-0 lead at halftime and received the second-half kick. The Boilers forced an errant throw from Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr on the opening drive of the third quarter, securing Purdue’s second takeaway of the year. Linebacker Charles Correa picked off a pass across the middle on 3rd-and-10 and returned it six yards to the Irish 31-yard line. It was the first career interception for the junior from Kuli’ou’ou, Hawaii, and the first pick thrown by Carr this season.
Freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano got Purdue on the board with the longest field goal of his young career, a 47-yarder in the third quarter. It was the longest kick made by a Purdue freshman since Carson Wiggs hit a then-school-record 53-yarder at Ohio State on Oct. 11, 2008.
Dylan Drennan punted six times for 313 yards including a career-long 78-yarder in the fourth quarter. At 52.2 yards per punt, it was the second-best punting average in a single game in school history (Cody Webster averaged 56.0 against Indiana on Nov. 27, 2010).
A crowd of 52,723 was on hand for the in-state rivalry game. Notre Dame retained the Shillelagh Trophy behind 444 yards of offense (267 passing, 177 rushing).

The University of Notre Dame football team (4-0) dominated Purdue (1-3) in the first half, then cruised to a 49-10 victory at Ross-Ade Stadium (52,723) on a sunny and beautiful afternoon.
The Irish pass rush never let Purdue breathe, while five different Notre Dame players scored a touchdown in the first half to build a 35-0 lead. The Irish out-gained Purdue 273 yards to 90 in the first half and held the Boilers to just 12 rushing yards.
Defensive end Bryce Young set the tone for the contest with a sack on the game’s first play and the Irish defense harassed Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne all afternoon. Young would finish the game with four tackles and two sacks, the second of which forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Drayk Bowen.
CJ Carr threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another in the victory while Aneyas Williams added 75 rushing yards and a score.

Third down was up next and Boubacar Traore grabbed Browne by his legs and Joey O’Brien, making his first career start at safety today, cleaned it up for the shared sack.
Now with the ball after the punt the Irish would put together another scoring drive that was kick-started by a fourth-down conversion deep in Notre Dame territory by Carr on a designed run. From that point, Notre Dame drove efficiently behind runs from Aneyas Wiliams and passes to James Flanigan (nine yards), Cooper Flanagan (27 yards) and an obvious Purdue pass interference call on third and goal to give the Irish a first down at the two.
Carr then kept the ball on a designed run to the left, untouched, for a three-yard scoring run and 21-0 Irish lead.
It would take just two more plays from scrimmage for the lead to grow. On second and long Bryce Young came streaking in from the left end and crushed the quarterback, forcing a fumble which was picked up by Drayk Bowen and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.
Notre Dame’s defense continued its assault on the quarterback on the next drive. The Boilermakers earned on first down, but quarterback hurries from Jaiden Ausberry and Viliamu-Asa forced another punt at the two-minute timeout.
The lead would end up 35-0 at halftime. Jaden Greathouse made a sliding 28-yard catch to surpass 1,000 yards for his career to put the Irish in range. Carr converted third down on a quarterback draw, then found Nolan James Jr. wide open out of the backfield for a three-yard touchdown pass.
The 77 points scored in the first half in Notre Dame’s last two visits to Ross-Ade Stadium are a program-best. In addition, the 35 points scored against Purdue in the first half of the last three meetings against the Boilermakers mark the first time in Notre Dame football history the Irish have achieved that feat.
The first drive of the second half ended quickly when Carr had his first bad read of the season, looking for Faison but throwing his first interception of the year.
The defense stepped up again to earn yet another stop. Purdue drove as far as the four-yard line, but another quarterback pressure by Bryce Young on fourth down forced the Boilermaker to throw the ball away and the lead remained 35-0.
The shut out ended on the next Boilermaker drive. The home team managed 20 yards in eight plays after a short punt to kick a 48-yard field goal and make the score 35-3 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.
Notre Dame extended the lead in a drive that started in the third quarter and ended early in the fourth. Williams picked up the first down on a run and catch, then Carr dropped a perfect pass into Faison down the right sideline for 26 yards to the Purdue 26-yard line. From there, Greathouse caught a pass on third down for 15 yards, Williams ran down to the two-yard line and Carr found Flanagan after a great play-action fake for a two-yard score.
Notre Dame’s second and third string took over with 11 minutes left in the game. The group would tack on seven more points when Jonaz Walton burst around the left side for 44 yards down inside the five-yard line. Noah Grubbs then connected with Matt Jeffrey for the first career touchdown pass and catch for each player.
Purdue tacked on a last-second score against Notre Dame’s deep reserves, throwing a touchdown pass with six seconds left in the game.

BUTLER FOOTBALL
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Butler defeated the Valparaiso Beacons 33-28 on Saturday afternoon, marking Butler’s fifth consecutive victory in the Hoosier Helmet rivalry. Nick Munson was sensational for Butler in the win, hauling in three touchdown receptions. With the win, Butler improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in PFL action while Valpo slides to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in PFL action.
NOTEABLE STATS
Munson had a career day pulling down five catches for 114 yards and three touchdowns. 114 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a game are both career-highs for Munson.
Gabe Passini completed 9-of-17 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Passini added 104 rushing yards on 20 carries.
Desmin Jackson found the endzone for the fifth consecutive game and carried the ball 12 times for 97 yards.
Dantu Gardner Jr. recorded an interception on the first drive of the game.
Will Beesley led the defense with nine total tackles and two tackles for loss.
Ashton Nawrocki had four tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Tristan Johnson and Kian Kelly both recorded a pass break up.
Beck Janki made two of his three field goal attempts. Janki made a career-long 41-yard kick in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On Valparaiso’s opening drive of the game, the Beacons quarterback looked to hit a quick slant to his left. Gardner Jr. jumped the route and was able to intercept the pass, giving Butler the ball just outside the redzone. Butler was unable to get a first down on the drive and settled for a 41-yard field goal from Janki. Both teams traded possessions back and forth before Valparaiso was able to put together a 10-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run from Rowan Keefe.
On the first play of the second quarter, Valparaiso running back Michael Rumoro took a third-and-three handoff 78 yards for a touchdown, giving the Beacons a 14-3 advantage. Butler responded by driving down the field, but the offense was halted, bringing Janki on for a field goal attempt. Janki was unable to convert the 37-yard attempt as the Valpo 11-point lead stayed intact. After forcing a Valparaiso punt, Butler responded with a six-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a 35-yard touchdown grab from Munson. After a delay due to an injury, neither side was able to score again in the half as Valparaiso took the 14-10 lead into the break.
Butler opened the second half with an eight-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off with a 40-yard touchdown from Munson, which was his second of the game. With the score, Butler took its first lead of the day at 17-14. Valpo answered with a long drive of their own that ended with a seven-yard receiving touchdown from Devin Yeats, giving the home side the 21-17 advantage.
Butler was driving at the end of the third quarter and started the fourth in the redzone. Munson continued to dominate for the Bulldogs, hauling in two catches for 32 yards and his third touchdown of the game. After forcing a Valpo punt, Butler drove down the field and Janki converted a 41-yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs the 27-21 advantage with just over six minutes left in the game. After forcing a Valparaiso punt, Butler got the ball back and, with a five-play drive, found the endzone again as Jackson scored on a 17-yard rush up the middle. With the score, the Butler lead grew to 33-21. Valpo responded once again with a score of their own as the home side cut the deficit to five (33-28). Butler recovered Valpo’s onside kick but was forced into a three-and-out. Valpo was able to get the ball inside the redzone but a last-second pass breakup in the endzone from Kian Kelly sealed the victory for Butler.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL
KENT, Ohio – The Ball State football team opened Mid-American Conference play Saturday afternoon, falling to Kent State at Dix Stadium, 26-13.
The Cardinals (1-3, 0-1 MAC) gave up a safety in the closing quarter but managed to respond with a Jalen Bonds rush past the goal line on the other end of the field, scoring the last points for either team with a failed two-point conversion. Ball State’s second successful trip inside the redzone was set up by Donovan Hamilton’s 33-yard grab to the Kent State 18-yard line. Bonds scored four plays later, but it was not enough to change the outcome in a game the Golden Flashes led from the first quarter.
With the final result, both teams played their first game this season within 21 points.
Ball State saw 14 unanswered points go to the Flashes (2-2, 1-0 MAC) in the first half, a deficit fueled by five Kent State plays of 20 or more yards, including three of 25 or more. Ball State’s offense struggled to cover the field in the opening half, with two of three first-half drives ending only three yards past midfield. The offensive production progressed in the second half, with the Cardinals recording 134 of their 164 passing yards between the third and fourth quarters.
Tyler Mizzell made his first start in a Ball State uniform, completing 16 throws for 164 yards and a touchdown. Mizzell connected with Hamilton to get Ball State on the board in the second quarter. The grab was the first receiving touchdown of Hamilton’s collegiate career and Mizzell’s first touchdown pass as a Cardinal.
Hamilton earned a career-best 80 receiving yards by the end of the afternoon. His seven catches tied his career-high, which he set at UConn last season. Bonds followed with 57 receiving yards, including a 38-yard catch during Ball State’s scoring drive in the second quarter. Bonds and Hamilton recorded the Cardinals’ two longest receptions this year. Bonds also led Ball State’s rushing, tallying 36 yards on 11 attempts.
Sterling Smith recorded a career-high nine tackles for the second straight game, matching his total at Liberty last week (Sept. 19). In his first game played this season, Mikeah Webster earned a career-best in tackles, capturing eight. Webster also had two tackles for loss, totaling seven yards. Will Yates followed with seven, while Cincear Lewis had six. Like Webster, also starting for the first time this season was veteran offensive lineman Cole Mosier, who started at right guard after missing the season’s first three games.
The Cardinals return to Scheumann Stadium to host Toledo on Oct. 3 for Community Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, with broadcast on ESPN+ and WLBC 104.1 FM.

INDIANA STATE FOOTBALL
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State was unable to overcome a halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon to No. 8/7 North Dakota as the Sycamores fell in the Missouri Valley Football home opener against the Fighting Hawks, 42-35.
The Sycamores (2-3, 0-1) trailed 28-14 following the halftime break as North Dakota (4-1, 1-0) utilized a trio of Jerry Kaminski touchdown passes and a Kaminski quarterback keeper over the first 30 minutes to build the lead. Indiana State cut the deficit down to 28-21 on Aaron Ball’s 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, to set the stage for a high-scoring final 15 minutes at Memorial Stadium.
North Dakota struck first building a 42-21 lead with 9:37 remaining as Kaminski scored on a quarterback keeper on the first drive of the quarter, before connecting with Cameron Weir for a 39-yard touchdown pass on their next drive to stretch the lead back out.
Indiana State rallied back as Jayden Reed (eight catches, 129 yards, two touchdowns) broke loose over the middle for a 33-yard touchdown reception to cut the deficit down to 42-28 with 8:01 to play in the contest.
On the ensuing onside kick, BJ Wuest went up near the Indiana State sideline and kept his feet in-bounds to recover the ball at the UND 47-yard line to keep possession with the Sycamores. Six plays later, Wuest was in the end zone as the Sycamore wide receiver created separation on the corner route and hauled in the 17-yard touchdown pass from Brady Allen to make it a 42-35 game with 6:36 to play.
Indiana State’s defense held North Dakota near midfield on the following possession. Alex Rose and Devin Johnson came up to make the stop on Kaminski’s QB keeper on 3rd-and-10 to force a Fighting Hawks’ punt near midfield.
The Sycamores were able to pick up a first down on their final drive of the game as Reed hauled in a 13-yard reception to move the ball from the INS 15 to the Sycamore 28. Another Allen-Reed connection put the Sycamores at 3rd-and-4 from the INS 34, but North Dakota’s pressure on the fourth down play led to an incompletion and turnover on downs, allowing UND to run out the clock and secure the conference win.
Jayden Reed hauled in eight receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns in a standout performance for the freshman wide receiver. He recorded a 20-yard reception for a score in the first quarter, and added a 49-yard catch in the third quarter to set up Aaron Ball’s 10-yard rushing touchdown, before finishing his highlight reel with the 33-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter.
Brady Allen was 18-of-33 through the air for 270 yards and four touchdown passes, targeting Jaylan Johnson (17-yard TD) and BJ Wuest (17-yard TD) for scores in addition to the two passes to Reed. KeShon Singleton added three receptions for a season-high 81 yards in the game.
Aaron Ball found the end zone for the third consecutive game with his 10-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter on his way to finishing with a team-high 16 carries for 50 yards. Ashton Hayes was back in the backfield after a three-game hiatus with two carries for four yards, while adding a reception.
Alex Rose led the Sycamore defense with a season-high 12 tackles in the game. Xavian Andrews and Braxton Sampson both finished with nine stops, while CJ Davis posted five tackles and a strip sack. Kaleb Harris recovered the fumble and added a pass breakup.
Jerry Kaminski paced the North Dakota offense going 33-for-48 through the air for 381 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 18 carries for 86 yards and two more scores. Korey Tai was his favorite target with eight catches for 62 yards and a score, while Deng Deng added six catches for 101 yards. Cameron Weir added two receiving touchdowns and 64 receiving yards.
The North Dakota defense was active throughout the game led by Braden Mohr’s seven tackles, 3.0 sacks, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, and a forced fumble. Overall, the North Dakota defense finished the game with four sacks, six pass breakups, and five quarterback hurries in the win.
How They Scored
North Dakota scored on the opening drive of the game as the Fighting Hawks moved the ball down the field over 14 plays and 80 yards before Jerry Kaminski found Korey Tai for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it a 7-0 game with 8:59 remaining in the first quarter.
The Sycamores responded on their opening drive with Jayden Reed hauling in a 20-yard touchdown reception from Brady Allen to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game up at 7-7 with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter.
Jerry Kaminski put North Dakota ahead with a nine-yard touchdown run to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive to give UND the 14-7 lead with 14:14 remaining in the second quarter.
North Dakota added to the lead on their next drive as Jerry Kaminski found Mason South for a six-yard touchdown pass to make it a 21-7 lead with 9:30 remaining in the second quarter to cap an eight-play, 59-yard drive.
The Sycamores were back on the scoreboard with 6:57 remaining in the second quarter as Jaylan Johnson hauled in the 17-yard touchdown pass from Brady Allen to cap a seven-play, 73-yard drive to cut it to 21-14. The drive was aided by KeShon Singleton breaking a tackle near midfield on 3rd-and-9 and turning it into a 43-yard gain to stake the Sycamores to 1st-and-10 at the UND 17.
North Dakota scored just before the halftime break as Cameron Weir hauled in a 13-yard touchdown reception from Jerry Kaminski to end an 11-play, 55-yard drive to give the Fighting Hawks the 28-14 halftime lead.
Indiana State cut the deficit down to 28-21 with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter as Aaron Ball found the gap through the North Dakota defensive line and sprinted for a 10-yard touchdown run. The drive was aided by Jayden Reed’s 49-yard reception to move the ball down to the UND 10.
North Dakota moved the ball 81 yards on 11 plays with Jerry Kaminski scoring on a one-yard QB keeper to put the Fighting Hawks up 35-21.
The Fighting Hawks’ lead reached 42-21 as Jerry Kaminski found Cameron Weir for a 39-yard touchdown reception with 9:37 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Indiana State continued to battle back as Jayden Reed hauled in his second touchdown of the game as the freshman wide receiver scored on a 33-yard pass from Brady Allen to cut the score to 42-28 with 8:01 remaining in the contest.
Following a successful onside kick as BJ Wuest toe-tapped the sideline on the attempt, the Sycamores went to Wuest for the touchdown reception as the wide receiver hauled in the 17-yard score with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter to provide the final 42-35 scoring margin.

Jayden Reed recorded the first 100-yard receiving game of his collegiate career as the freshman wide receiver hauled in a career-high eight receptions for 129 yards and two scores on the day.
Jayden Reed’s eight receptions marked a career-high and the most by a Sycamore wide receiver since Rashad Rochelle hauled in 10 receptions on November 16, 2024, against Illinois State.
Jayden Reed’s 129 receiving yards marked the second time an Indiana State receiver reached 100 receiving yards in the 2026 season, joining BJ Wuest (142 yards at Eastern Illinois, Sept. 12, 2026).
Jayden Reed’s two-touchdown game marked the first multi-touchdown receiving effort by a Sycamore in the 2026 season and first by a Sycamore since Rashad Rochelle hauled in three touchdown receptions on November 15, 2025, at Youngstown State.
Brady Allen made his Indiana State starting debut in the 2026 season, throwing for 270 yards and four touchdowns.
Brady Allen’s four-touchdown game marked the first four passing touchdown game by an Indiana State quarterback since Ryan Boyle threw for five touchdowns in a 51-48 triple overtime win over South Dakota back on November 3, 2018.
Aaron Ball continued his scoring streak on Saturday afternoon as the Sycamore running back found the end zone for the fifth time in 2026.
Aaron Ball has scored at least one rushing touchdown in each of the last three games, the longest streak by a Sycamore running back since Justin Dinka scored on the ground in each of the last three games in the 2022 season.
Aaron Ball’s rushing touchdown streak is the longest by a Sycamore since Elijah Owens scored rushing touchdowns in five consecutive games spanning Sept. 28-Oct. 26, 2024.
KeShon Singleton hauled in three receptions for a season-high 81 yards on Saturday afternoon. It marked his third game of 60-plus receiving yards on the year.
Alex Rose recorded his first double-digit tackling effort of the 2026 season with a game-high 12 stops on the game. It marked his second career double-digit tackling game.
CJ Davis recorded his first collegiate sack in the game as the redshirt junior defensive back broke through the line and forced a fumble on the quarterback takedown, with the turnover leading to an Indiana State touchdown.
Indiana State successfully converted an onside kick in the fourth quarter when BJ Wuest recovered the kick following a Sycamore touchdown that narrowed the game to 42-28.
It marked the second consecutive season BJ Wuest has made a standout special teams play against North Dakota after blocking a punt and returning it for a score last season in Grand Forks, N.D. on October 25, 2025.
The Sycamores fall to 1-4 all-time against North Dakota.
Indiana State dropped the MVFC opener for the 10th consecutive season dating back to 2016.

VALPO FOOTBALL
The Valparaiso University football team held a 14-3 first-half lead, but visiting Butler stormed from behind to prevail 33-28 in Saturday’s Pioneer Football League opener, also the Homecoming game at Brown Field. Valpo trailed 33-21 after Butler scored with 2:44 to play, but the Beacons scored a late touchdown and nearly came all the way back as a pass attempt to the endzone that would have won the game fell incomplete with all zeros on the clock.
How It Happened
Butler made an interception on the first drive of the game, but the Valpo defense held strong with stops on the next three plays to force the Bulldogs to settle for a 41-yard field goal, which went through the uprights to make it 3-0 Butler with 12:26 remaining in the opening quarter.
That stood as the score until Valpo QB Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) plunged into the endzone from 3 yards out to put the Beacons ahead 7-3 with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Chris Gundy (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) and Micah Mackay (Zionsville, Ind. / Lutheran) each had 11-yard catches as part of that scoring drive.
After the defense forced a three-and-out late in the first, the Beacons started the second quarter in style. On the first snap of the period, Michael Rumoro (Geneva, Ill. / Genova Community) broke off a 78-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3 in favor of the hosts.
Butler drove into the redzone on the next drive, but missed a 37-yard field goal to keep it a 11-point Beacon lead with 8:04 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs got a stop and then reached the endzone for the first time when QB Gabe Passini completed a 35-yard pass to Nick Munson that made it 14-10. The game was delayed due to a Butler injury late in the half before 14-10 stood as the halftime score.
Butler scored on its first second-half drive on a 40-yard TD pass from Passini to Munson to take a 17-14 lead with 11:03 left in the third quarter.
The Beacons put together a 75-yard drive that included a 24-yard catch by Gundy after a pair of third-down conversions. Valpo converted on third down for the third time on the drive, this time with a Keefe 7-yard TD pass to Devin Yeats (Hampshire, Ill. / Hampshire) to seesaw the hosts back in front at 21-17 with 3:44 left in the third.
Butler scored early in the fourth on a 14-yard Munson TD catch to go back ahead by a 24-21 score.
The Beacons could not convert a fourth-and-6 from the Butler 23, and the ensuing drive resulted in a 40-yard field goal that doubled the gap to six at 27-21.
After a punt and a Valpo penalty, Butler took over at the Valpo 40, and took advantage of the field position by eventually scoring on a 17-yard TD run by Desmin Jackson that made it 33-21. The 2-point conversion failed.
An 81-yard kickoff return by Kaiser Wilhelm (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) ignited a drive that saw Keefe find Mackay for a 15-yard touchdown to shrink the lead to five.
The Valpo defense made a big stop as Jason Salman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson [Marietta]) made a tackle on third-and-1 from the Valpo 45, and a short Butler punt gave the Beacons an opportunity as they took over at their own 35 with 1:36 to play.
Keefe completed his first four pass attempts of the drive including a 10 yarder to Yeats, then a targeting penalty against Butler gave Valpo first-and-10 at the Butler 17. After an incomplete pass and three-yard run, Keefe completed a pass that was deflected and caught by an offensive lineman. Valpo had time for one more heave to the endzone on fourth-and-8 from the Butler 15, but the pass was broken up, and the Bulldogs retained the Hoosier Helmet rivalry trophy.
Inside the Game
This continued a history of one-score games between these two teams as Valpo has dropped the last five head-to-head meetings with all of those coming by 10 points or fewer including four one-score games.
Eight of the last nine Hoosier Helmet rivalry games have been decided by 10 points or fewer.
Nine of Valpo’s last 10 Homecoming games have been decided by seven points or fewer.
Rumoro had the first 100-yard rushing game of his collegiate career, with the bulk of damage coming on his career-long 78-yard run, his second touchdown of the season.
Keefe found the endzone with his legs, his second rushing touchdown of the season and the fifth of his career. The Valpo QB threw for two scores and now has six passing TDs this season and 24 in his career.
Keefe went 24-of-35 passing for 187 yards, setting a career high in completions for the third straight week.
Mackay’s TD grab was his first of the season and the second of his career, while Yeats hauled in his first in 2026 and the fourth of his career.
Gundy and Mackay shared the team lead with six receptions apiece, while Gundy led the way with 59 receiving yards.
Redshirt junior Nic Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) was the team’s top tackler with a career-high-tying 13 stops. He accumulates his highest tackle outputs against the arch rivals, as his previous 13-tackle game came in the 2025 season finale at Butler.
Redshirt junior Max Samuel (Edina, Minn. / Edina) had 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss on Saturday, and is up to a team-high nine tackles for loss and team-high 3.5 sacks on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Anthony Feltrinelli (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) was second on the team with eight tackles, his second time in the last three games with eight or more.
Wilhelm’s 81-yard kick return was the team’s longest so far this season.
Punter Will Orlando (Avon, Ind. / Brownsburg) averaged 45.5 yards per punt on four attempts with a long of 51.
Valpo had its best third-down offense of the season, going 7-of-14 for 50 percent.
Penalties were a bugaboo on Saturday, as Valpo’s 119 penalty yards marked the team’s most of the Waddle Era and most since the final game of the 2021 season.
Valpo lost the opening coin toss for an improbable 15th straight game.
