NBA ROUNDUP: LUKE KENNARD’S 27 SPARKS LAKERS PAST ROCKETS IN GAME 1

Luke Kennard scored 27 points and LeBron James added 19 points with 13 assists as the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers earned a 107-98 victory over the visiting Houston Rockets on Saturday in Game 1 of a Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Deandre Ayton scored 19 points with 11 rebounds and Marcus Smart added 15 points with eight assists as the fourth-seeded Lakers won with leading scorers Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) watching from the bench.

In just his seventh start since joining the Lakers from the Atlanta Hawks at the trade deadline, Kennard went 9 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 5 from 3-point range while delivering a season high in points to fill the scoring void at guard.

Alperen Sengun scored 19 points while Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard each added 17 for the fifth-seeded Rockets, who were playing without leading scorer Kevin Durant (knee).

Jabari Smith Jr. scored 16 points with 12 rebounds and Tari Eason also had 16 points for Houston, which has lost three consecutive road games to Los Angeles since the middle of March.

Nuggets 116, Timberwolves 105

Nikola Jokic had 25 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists, Jamal Murray scored a game-high 30 points and host Denver beat Minnesota to take a 1-0 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Murray was perfect from the line, hitting a career-high 16 free throws. Aaron Gordon finished with 17 points, nearly half of which came during the Nuggets’ 14-0 third-quarter run which broke a deadlock and put them in control of the game after a slow start.

Anthony Edwards, who was questionable after missing 11 of the Timberwolves’ final 14 regular-season games with right knee issues, led Minnesota with 22 points. Rudy Gobert produced 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter.

Knicks 113, Hawks 102

Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to start the decisive third-quarter run for host New York, which pulled away for a win over Atlanta in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Jalen Brunson scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the first quarter for the third-seeded Knicks, who reached the Eastern Conference finals last year for the first time since 2000. Towns finished with 25 points and was 10 of 10 from the free throw line while Anunoby collected 18 points.

CJ McCollum scored 26 points for the Hawks, who earned the sixth seed in their first trip to the playoffs since 2023. Jalen Johnson had 23 points while Onyeka Okongwu (19) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (17) each scored in double figures.

Cavaliers 126, Raptors 113

Donovan Mitchell scored 32 points and James Harden added 22 points and 10 assists, powering Cleveland to a victory over visiting Toronto in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Max Strus had 24 points off the bench and Evan Mobley scored 17 for the fourth-seeded Cavaliers, who have won 11 straight playoff games over the Raptors. Game 2 is Monday in Cleveland, where Toronto is 0-8 all-time in the postseason.

RJ Barrett scored 24 points and Scottie Barnes contributed 21 points and seven assists for the fifth-seeded Raptors. Brandon Ingram added 17 points and Jamal Shead had 17 points in his playoff debut, starting for injured guard Immanuel Quickley (right hamstring strain).

NHL

NHL ROUNDUP: FLYERS WIN GAME 1 OF IN-STATE PLAYOFF SERIES VS. PENGUINS

Porter Martone scored a timely goal late for the Philadelphia Flyers, who skated away with a 3-2 road victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven, first-round playoff series on Saturday night.

Martone, a 19-year-old playing in his 10th NHL game, scored an insurance goal to make it 3-1 with 2:37 left in the Battle of Pennsylvania rivalry series. That proved crucial when the Penguins’ Bryan Rust found the net with 1:01 left.

Travis Sanheim and Jamie Drysdale also scored for Philadelphia in the franchise’s first playoff game in six years. The Flyers got 15 saves from Dan Vladar in his playoff debut, including one on a point-blank shot from Anthony Mantha in the closing seconds.

Evgeni Malkin scored his 68th postseason goal for the Penguins and assisted on Rust’s goal. Stuart Skinner made 17 saves. Game 2 is Monday in Pittsburgh.

Wild 6, Stars 1

Matt Boldy had two goals and an assist for visiting Minnesota in a win against Dallas in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and two assists, Joel Eriksson Ek scored twice, Ryan Hartman had a goal and an assist and Mats Zuccarello had three assists for the Wild, who are trying to win their first playoff series since 2015 after getting eliminated in the opening round eight times since then. Rookie Jesper Wallstedt got the start and made 27 saves.

Jason Robertson scored and Jake Oettinger made 23 saves for Dallas, which lost Game 1 of its first-round series 5-1 against the Colorado Avalanche last season before rebounding and eventually reaching the Western Conference finals. Game 2 is Monday in Dallas.

Hurricanes 2, Senators 0

Frederik Andersen made 22 saves and Logan Stankoven had a goal and an assist as Carolina overcame a slow start to defeat Ottawa in the opener of the first-round series in Raleigh, N.C.

Andersen recorded his sixth career playoff shutout after not having any in 35 regular-season starts this season. Taylor Hall also scored and Jackson Blake had two assists for the Hurricanes.

Linus Ullmark made 27 saves for the Senators, who saw 13 of their 22 shots on goal come in the third period but were unable to get on the board, even with a late power-play opportunity. Game 2 is Monday in Raleigh.

MLB

MLB ROUNDUP: CHRIS SALE, BRAVES WIN PITCHERS’ DUEL VS. SCUFFLING PHILS

Chris Sale worked seven strong innings and Mauricio Dubon provided a two-run single to lift the visiting Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Sale (4-1) struck out seven and walked only one, giving up just one run and five hits. Austin Riley, Jonah Heim and Ozzie Albies each had two hits as Atlanta won for the eighth time in 10 games.

The Braves will look to complete a three-game sweep Sunday in the finale with the scuffling Phillies, who have dropped eight of 10. Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sanchez (2-2) gave up three unearned runs in six innings, yielding eight hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

The  game began in exciting fashion, as Ronald Acuna Jr. sent a blast to deep center, only to watch Brandon Marsh leap at the wall to rob a home run. In the second, Philadelphia’s Felix Reyes launched Sale’s 2-0 fastball over the wall in right field for a home run in his first major league at-bat. However, that was the only offensive highlight for the hosts.

Diamondbacks 6, Blue Jays 2

Corbin Carroll broke a tie with an opposite-field grand slam in the eighth inning and Arizona extended its winning streak to four games with a victory over Toronto in Phoenix.

Ildemaro Vargas singled off Jeff Hoffman (1-2) to open the eighth, extending his season-opening hitting streak to a franchise-record 14 games. Alek Thomas singled and Ketel Marte walked to bring up Carroll, who hit his fourth career slam on a 3-1 fastball. The D-backs, who have won eight of 10, lead the majors with 10 comeback victories.

Nathan Lukes had three hits, Kazuma Okamoto had two hits and an RBI and Ernie Clement and Eloy Jimenez had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who have lost four straight, six of seven and 12 of 15.

Yankees 13, Royals 4

Cody Bellinger homered twice and collected five RBIs as the New York Yankees easily recorded a victory over visiting Kansas City.

Amed Rosario hit a two-run homer and Ben Rice hit a solo shot during a five-run third. New York’s Will Warren (2-0) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings. The right-hander matched a career-high with 11 strikeouts and walked none.

The Royals dropped their sixth straight and were blanked until Carter Jensen hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Michael Massey added a two-run double in the ninth. Noah Cameron (1-1) was shelled for a career-worst seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings.

Athletics 7, White Sox 6 (11 innings)

Nick Kurtz hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and Max Muncy was the walk-off hero in the 11th as the Athletics overcame an early 5-0 deficit to beat Chicago in West Sacramento, Calif.

Muncy hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to left field off Lucas Sims (0-2) to score Jacob Wilson. The White Sox had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the 11th, but Jack Perkins (2-0) pitched out of trouble to give the A’s a chance to end the game in the bottom half.

The game went to extras after Kurtz’s two-run shot off Jordan Leasure in the seventh. Colson Montgomery, Andrew Benintendi and Munetaka Murakami hit home runs in a losing effort. The White Sox missed countless chances to build on their lead, finishing 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

Giants 7, Nationals 6 (12 innings)

Matt Chapman drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning and San Francisco beat host Washington.

Chapman led off the 12th against Cionel Perez (0-2) and grounded a single to left, scoring automatic runner Luis Arraez. Caleb Kilian (1-0) pitched two innings for the win. The automatic runner did not advance in either inning and Kilian only allowed one baserunner on an intentional walk.

Heliot Ramos had three hits including his second home run in two games as San Francisco won its third straight. The Nationals loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th, but Ryan Walker got two strikeouts and a groundout. James Wood hit his seventh homer of the season and scored three runs for the Nationals.

Reds 5, Twins 4

Pinch hitter Dane Myers’ bloop single scored Spencer Steer in the top of the ninth inning as Cincinnati rallied for a win over Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The Reds scored a run in each of the final three innings to rally from three separate two-run deficits, with Elly De La Cruz providing an RBI single and Rece Hinds providing a sacrifice fly. Kyle Nicolas (1-0) struck out the side in the eighth.

Ryan Jeffers had a two-run triple for the Twins, who saw manager Derek Shelton ejected for arguing a check-swing decision on the pitch before De La Cruz’s RBI single. Cole Sands (0-1) allowed Myers’ game-winning hit in the ninth.

Tigers 4, Red Sox 1

Tarik Skubal pitched six dominant innings and Kerry Carpenter highlighted his multi-hit  game with a home run, leading Detroit to a win over host Boston.

Skubal (3-2) struck out 10, twice fanning the side, while allowing just one run on four hits. Carpenter (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Kevin McGonigle (2-for-5, RBI, run) led the offense for Detroit, which broke a nine-game road losing streak.

Tyler Holton and Kenley Jansen teamed up in relief as Boston was limited to five hits. Jansen notched his fifth save. Boston’s Brayan Bello (1-2) gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. He fanned four, while throwing 84 pitches.

Rays 8, Pirates 7 (13 innings)

Cedric Mullins’ two-run leadoff home run in the top of the 13th inning made the difference as Tampa Bay beat host Pittsburgh in a four-hour, 12-minute game that was the longest of the season in terms of innings played and was extended by a two-hour, 27-minute weather delay.

Mullins had two hits and three RBIs and Jonny DeLuca had two hits and two RBIs to help the Rays rally from a 4-0 deficit before the delay and win for the seventh time in their past eight  games. Mullins’ 403-foot homer to right field came off Yohan Ramirez (2-1).

The Pirates cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the 13th when Konnor Griffin singled home Jake Mangum. But Yoendrys Gomez recovered by striking out Joey Bart with runners on second and third. Chandler Simpson, Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda also had two hits each for Tampa Bay, which used eight relievers, capped by Griffin Jax (1-2) and Gomez.

Guardians 4, Orioles 2

Brayan Rocchio hit a three-run homer and Gavin Williams pitched seven strong innings to lead host Cleveland past Baltimore for its second win in five games.

Bo Naylor also homered for the Guardians, which had just three hits. Williams (3-1) struck out 11 and allowed one run, three hits and one walk. It marked the second time this season and sixth time overall that he has struck out 10 or more in a game.

Leody Taveras and Gunnar Henderson (two hits) hit solo homers for the Orioles, who had just four hits and struck out 16 times while losing for the fourth time in the past five games. Dean Kremer (0-1) pitched six innings for the Orioles and gave up three runs and two hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

Mariners 7, Rangers 3

George Kirby continued his mastery of Texas, allowing one run over 5 2/3 innings, as host Seattle posted a victory against its American League West rivals.

Luke Raley homered for the Mariners, who snapped a four-game losing streak and beat Texas for the first time in five tries this season. Kirby (3-2) improved to 9-1 in 12 career starts against Texas.

Josh Jung went deep for the Rangers, who had won their previous two games. Nathan Eovaldi (2-3) gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits in five-plus innings.

Cardinals 7, Astros 5

Masyn Winn and Jose Fermin smacked their first home runs, and visiting St. Louis clinched an interleague series win over Houston.

Alec Burleson also homered for the Cardinals, who pounced on Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. (1-1) and rode a solid start from right-hander Andre Pallante (2-1), who worked five innings.

Yordan Alvarez crushed his league-leading ninth home run and Shay Whitcomb belted a three-run shot, but the Astros lost their third consecutive game and have dropped 11 of 13.

Cubs 4, Mets 2

Carson Kelly hit a tiebreaking three-run pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning for host Chicago, which beat skidding New York.

The pinch-hit homer was the second of Kelly’s career and his first since Aug. 25, 2021. Ian Happ homered in the second for the Cubs, who have won four straight and have scored 51 runs while winning five of their last six games.

Kelly’s homer off Brooks Raley made a winner of Jameson Taillon (1-1), who gave up one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings.

Brewers 5, Marlins 2

Brice Turang slugged a go-ahead, two-run homer and Brandon Woodruff pitched seven brilliant innings as Milwaukee beat host Miami.

Turang went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Brewers, who won their season-high fourth consecutive  game. Woodruff (2-2) allowed three singles and one run over seven innings.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (2-2) allowed five hits and three runs in five innings. He tied his career high with six walks and matched a career low among five-plus-inning starts with just one strikeout. Liam Hicks and Connor Norby each had two hits for Miami.

Padres 4, Angels 1

Fernando Tatis Jr. had two hits and two RBIs and Mason Miller struck out two en route to his seventh save to lead San Diego to a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim.

Ramon Laureano also drove in two runs, Jake Cronenworth scored a run and reached base four times with a single, two walks and a hit by a pitch and Freddy Fermin scored twice for San Diego, which won for the 12th time in its last 14 games.

Zach Neto and Mike Trout each doubled and Nolan Schanuel had an RBI single for Los Angeles, which finished with just six hits. Ryan Zeferjahn (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in one inning immediately after Yusei Kikuchi wrapped his scoreless six-inning, eight-strikeout start for Los Angeles.

Rockies 4, Dodgers 3

Troy Johnston hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning and Colorado edged Los Angeles in Denver to win for only the second time in nine games.

Johnston had three of the Rockies’ seven hits. Brennan Bernardino (2-0) delivered 1 1/3 no-hit innings in relief, and Victor Vodnik pitched the ninth for his third save.

Kyle Tucker and Dalton Rushing homered for the Dodgers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Shohei Ohtani was 1-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 50 games. Will Klein (1-1) allowed hits to each of the first three batters he faced in the sixth, including Johnston’s game-winning double.

GOLF

JON RAHM AGAIN DOMINATES BACK 9 TO REMAIN LIV MEXICO CITY LEADER

Jon Rahm dominated the back nine once again on Saturday to remain atop the leaderboard at 14 under through three rounds of LIV Golf Mexico City in Naucalpan, Mexico.

Rahm overcame a double-bogey on the par-4 fifth hole and a 1-over showing on the front nine by shooting 5 under on the back nine to post his second consecutive 4-under-par 67. Through three rounds this week, the Spaniard has shot 11 under on the back nine at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

He’s two strokes clear of Legion XIII teammate Tyrrell Hatton (66) of England at 12 under, who had a bogey-free Saturday round which included an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. Another Legion XIII player, Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin (69), is tied for third at 11 under with Brendan Grace (65) of South Africa.

Three members of the same team haven’t finished in the top three spots in a LIV event since the inaugural LIV event at London in 2022.

“It’s a real honor. Honestly. It’s great to see them playing well, too,” Rahm said of his team’s performance. ” … I’m not surprised at all. I’m happy to see them up there. And let’s see if it’s not me, but one of the three of us who wins tomorrow.”

Rahm, who has won the LIV individual championship each of the last two seasons, is seeking his second win of the season and sixth top-five finish in as many 2026 LIV events.

Grace, who was even par in the first round, has surged toward the top of the leaderboard after an up-and-down third round. He got to 4 under through his first five holes after an eagle at No. 7 before going bogey, birdie, birdie, double bogey on the next four holes.

He finished the back nine with four birdies in five holes before a bogey at the 18th and pars on the first and second holes to finish his rocky but effective round.

“I gave myself chances. I think I made eight birdies and an eagle today and then obviously a couple of mishaps out there,” Grace said. “But around a place like this, it’s easy to do.”

Included in a five-way tie for fifth at 10 under is Spain’s David Puig, who scattered eight birdies, an eagle and a bogey Saturday for the second 9-under round of the week. Victor Perez, who shot 9 under on Thursday, has fallen back into a tie for 22nd after posting a combined score of 5 over the last two rounds.

Bryson DeChambeau’s pursuit of becoming the first player in LIV Golf history to win three straight individual events appears quite finished after he shot 2 over in the third round to fall into a tie for 41st.

SEI YOUNG KIM RIDES UPS, DOWNS TO HOLD LEAD AT LA CHAMPIONSHIP

South Korea’s Sei Young Kim endured a rough back nine with four consecutive bogeys on Saturday but retained her lead after three rounds at the JM Eagle LA Championship in Tarzana, Calif.

Ranked No. 10 in the world, Kim had a one-shot lead entering the day and expanded that to two strokes with a 1-under-par 71 to move to 15-under 201 at El Caballero Country Club.

“Oh, wow, it’s feel like, yeah, roller coaster,” Kim said of her round. “I didn’t know still two-shot lead until the last hole. Yeah, after finish I look at the scoreboard and I still (hold a) two-shot lead. OK, one more day. Yeah, I’m going better tomorrow.”

Four players are tied for second at 13 under: Australia’s Hannah Green (5-under 67 on Saturday), Thailand’s Suvichaya Vinijchaitham (67), South Korea’s Ina Yoon (71) and Jessica Porvasnik (68).

Kim shot a blistering 31 on the front nine with five birdies (Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) and four pars to get to 19 under for the tournament. The back nine, however, was a different story with four pars followed by bogeys at Nos. 14, 15, 16 and 17 before a par on No. 18 for 40.

Kim had carded one bogey in a first-round 65 and followed with a bogey-free 65 on Friday.

She hit seven of 14 fairways on Saturday and 13 of 18 greens in regulation while totaling 28 putts.

“I don’t know forget about (the third round) because I want to keep thinking and then I want to why, why, why, why. I don’t want to make (it) happen again,” Kim said. “But it’s golf. It can be happen again. It’s learn and then learn and learn. Mistake and then learn, yeah. Hopefully, success (at the) end of the day tomorrow.”

Green’s adventurous 67 featured seven birdies and two bogeys. Vinijchaitham made eagle on the par-5 16th hole, and also have five birdies and two bogeys.

Yoon recorded four birdies and three bogeys, while Porvasnik carded seven birdies — including each of the last three holes — to counter a double bogey on the par-3 No. 9 and a bogey at the par-3 No. 15.

“I felt like I was playing pretty well,” Porvasnik said. “Had a hiccup on nine and just kind of kept grinding. Knew that just stay patient out there. It’s playing tough. To have the three birdies to close was just really nice.”

Kim, 33, owns 13 career LPGA victories, but just one in the past six years, at the BMW Ladies Championship last October.

Japan’s Chizzy Iwai had led after a course-record-tying 63 on Thursday, then carded a 68 on Friday to get to 13 under. She carded a 3-over 75 on Saturday to fall to 10 under and a tie for 10th.

Iwai made just one birdie, at the par-4 No. 13, and lost ground with bogeys at Nos. 2, 7, 17 and 18.

KEITH HORNE SURPRISE LEADER OF SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Keith Horne finds himself in an unexpected position — leading the Senior PGA Championship with 18 holes to go.

Horne, 54, fired a 5-under 66 during Saturday’s third round to seize a one-shot lead over four players at Concession Golf Club at Bradenton, Fla.

Sitting at 11-under 205 is a surreal feeling for Horne, who carded seven birdies against one bogey in his stellar third round.

The South Africa native has one Top 5 finish and $327,937 in earnings to show for his 14 previous PGA Tour Champions events. If he finishes on top Sunday, he’ll add $540,000 and a major to the top of his resume.

Sports Data API

“Of course, I’m surprised,” Horne said. “It’s such a strong field, such a quality field that’s playing this week. It’s not something we get to play in that often against the guys of this stature and quality. A lot of them are my idols. I watched a lot of them on TV.

“… It’s not something I sort of planned or played for. I just try to stick to my own  game, and I think that helped me today without looking around too much at what I’m leading.”

Thailand’s Thammanoon Sriroj (66), Stewart Cink (70) and the Australian combo of Steve Allan (68) and Scott Hend (72) are the foursome tied at 10 under. Ben Crane (71) sits two shots back in sixth place.

Horne has spent most of his career playing overseas. He appeared in five Champions events in 2025, including tying for 28th at the Senior PGA Championship.

His best finish was a tie for 11th at the Principal Charity Classic. He made four of five cuts.

On Saturday, he had a bogey on his first hole before gaining the stroke back with a birdie on No. 3. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 gave him momentum and he scored back-to-back birdies twice on the back nine during a five-hole stretch.

One thing Horne said he won’t do on Sunday: track who’s chasing him.

“No, I’m not a scoreboard-watcher,” Horne said. “I think you get two types of people. I’m not the most confrontational person so, you know, I’d rather just stay away and just stick to my own game.

“I think if I look up and I feel like I need to chase or push or beat somebody specific, it doesn’t help me. It only hinders me. I maybe just try too hard or put too much pressure on myself.”

Hend shared the second-round lead after rounds of 69 and 65, but he took a step backward Saturday with three bogeys over the first 11 holes. He rebounded with three birdies down the stretch to finish just one shot back.

He is well-aware the final round will feature a bunched-up leaderboard.

“Just stick to my game plan, play to my ability,” Hend said. “If I play to my ability, then I’ve got a chance to win. If I don’t win, then as long as I finish as hard as I possibly can, that’s fine.”

Brian Gay, who shared the second-round lead with Hend, shot 2-over 74 shares seventh at 208. Also part of that tie are Fiji’s Vijay Singh (67), Canada’s Greg Owen (68) and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez (68).

AUTO RACING

TYLER REDDICK RULES ADVENTHEALTH 400 QUALIFYING, COLLECTS ANOTHER POLE

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A fourth victory from the pole position would suit Tyler Reddick just fine after the driver of the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota prevailed in Saturday’s highly competitive qualifying session at Kansas Speedway.

Reddick toured the 1.5-mile speedway in 29.142 seconds (185.300 mph) to claim his third pole of the season, his second at Kansas and the 14th of his career.

In doing so, Reddick edged his car owner, Denny Hamlin (185.179 mph), by 0.019 seconds for the top starting spot in Sunday’s AdventHealth 400, the ninth NASCAR Cup Series race of the year.

The pole was the fifth in the last six Kansas races for Toyota drivers.

The 2026 season already has been a remarkable one for Reddick, who won the first three races and added a fourth victory March 22 at Darlington Raceway. Reddick’s last three wins have come from the pole position: at EchoPark Speedway near Atlanta (starting on metrics after a qualifying rainout), Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and at Darlington.

Should Reddick win on Sunday, he would become the fourth driver in Cup Series history –and the first since Dale Earnhardt in 1987 — to win five of the first nine events of a season. Reddick tops the series standings with a 62-point edge over second-place Ryan Blaney.

“We had a lot of good handling in our car for Atlanta,” Reddick said of his and his team’s ability to convert qualifying speed into race wins. “COTA, obviously I felt like the 12 (Blaney) and Shane (van Gisbergen) were really strong. I think just good handling, handling that you can trust, handling that stays with you in the long run (really helps). So, Darlington, same thing.

“Here, the speeds were a bit higher, and I didn’t know if we’d be able to get the pole, but it was really nice to see that the handling that we have, the short-run speed that we have, appears to be all there today.”

Bristol winner Ty Gibbs and defending series champion Kyle Larson posted identical times (29.192 seconds for 184.982 mph) and will start third and fourth, respectively, with Gibbs getting the nod on owner points. Larson is the two-time defending winner of the spring race at Kansas.

Chase Briscoe qualified fifth at 184.938 mph as Toyotas claimed four of the top five starting positions. Carson Hocevar was sixth, followed by Chris Buescher, Daniel Suarez, Blaney and Bubba Wallace.

NASCAR NOTEBOOK: DENNY HAMLIN HASN’T FORGOTTEN CHASE ELLIOTT’S KANSAS WIN

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — No doubt a bettor brave enough to take Chase Elliott with one lap left in overtime in last year’s Sept 28 race at Kansas Speedway could have gotten long odds.

Elliott took the white flag in fifth place, behind the Toyotas of Bubba Wallace, Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell. Wallace pulled out to a lead of a half-car-length, with Hamlin in pursuit.

Hamlin steered his No. 11 Camry to the inside of Wallace’s car and forced Wallace wide through the final two corners. That allowed Elliott to dive to the inside of both Toyotas and steal the win for Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet.

“It certainly played a factor, kind of in the manufacturer battle as well, right?,” Hamlin said on Saturday before NASCAR Cup Series practice for Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 at Kansas (2 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). “I mean, you go from winning one to now your competition actually won.

“There were definitely a lot of negatives to the way that race ended, but it certainly was I just, I feel like, I was trying to go for it, certainly, and used a little bit too much aggression, for sure, in Turn 3.

“But overall, you’re going to have that in racing. When you have teammates, manufacturer guys that you all share information with, we’re going to always be right around each other. So sometimes those racing incidents happen in one out of 20 times.”

Hamlin heads the list of winners at Kansas with four victories, but he’s shocked at his recent failures to find Victory Lane.

“For the last six years, if someone else wins a Kansas race, I’m just trying to figure out how we didn’t win, because we’re always just so fast here,” Hamlin said.

“We found 10 to 12 different ways to not win here, and I thought I saw the stat this week that there has only been. … I think (Kyle) Larson’s been the only repeat winner here in the last 11 races, and it was like, the fact that we haven’t is just criminal. So, hopefully we can change that.”

Now a NASCAR Cup winner, Ty Gibbs wants to make racing more physical

At age 23, Ty Gibbs is feeling his oats after his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory, and he’d like to make the sport tougher and more physical.

“I think we should rip all the cool suits out of everyone’s cars and make it a more physical sport,” Gibbs said on Saturday. “I think that would be very entertaining and bring out more emotion, obviously…

Sports

“I think no cool suits — rip ‘em all out. I think, honestly, people would be pumped with that, ‘cause half the time they break on everybody and make it worse. I think we should rip all of it out, make it more physical.”

When cool suits are working properly, they compensate for high temperatures in a car’s cockpit. When they malfunction, however, the water flowing inside the suit can overheat and add to a driver’s discomfort.

Some drivers, such as Gibbs’ teammate Denny Hamlin, choose not to use cool suits at all.

Erik Jones: New LEGACY president should have significant impact

The new president of LEGACY Motor Club isn’t just an administrator, as driver Erik Jones made clear on Saturday at Kansas Speedway, site of Sunday’s AdventHealth 400.

With a background as chief operating officer at Joe Gibbs Racing and as vice president of engineering and R&D (as well as global sales and marketing) at automotive industry supplier Multimatic, Michael Guttilla brings a broad-ranging skill set to LEGACY.

“I didn’t know him beforehand, but I had a chance to sit down and spend some time with him in the last week and a half,” Jones said on Saturday at Kansas Speedway. “I think he’s a super impressive guy. His resume’s really strong, and he’s done a lot of things, in motorsports and in manufacturing and production cars.

“He has a pretty broad range of skills, and I think he has a lot of managerial skills. I think the role he’s in is great, obviously, but I think he can bring a lot to the table and a sense of understanding the engineering side as well. I don’t think he’s a guy that is just well-versed in business, but I think he’s well versed in competition and performance.

“I’m excited to have him. We’ve been kind of waiting to fill that role and find the right guy, and that’s been a role that wasn’t just randomly filled when Michael became available. It was something that’s been in the works, and we’ve been trying to find the right fit for a while. I was excited to do that, excited to have him, and see what he can bring. It’s still super early. It’s been a couple of weeks, but I really, I think his influence is already starting to be felt a bit.”

Female drivers make a statement in ARCA Menards Series race at Kansas

Gio Ruggiero won Saturday’s Tide 150 ARCA Menards Series race at Kansas Speedway, but there were significant stories that unfolded behind him.

Three of the four female drivers in the field finished in the top 10, with Lanie Buice running fifth, followed by Jade Avedisian in seventh and Dystany Spurlock in 10th. Avedisian was competing on a 1.5-mile intermediate speedway for the first time.

The fourth female driver in the race, Isabella Robusto, a former Kansas pole winner, was running just outside the top 10 when the engine in Cleetus McFarland’s car blew and spread oil on the track.

Robusto slid through the fluid, slammed into the outside wall and fell out of the race.

Daniel Dye finished second in his first race since his reinstatement from a suspension for inappropriate comments directed at IndyCar driver David Malukas.

INDIANS BASEBALL

PAPILLION, Neb. – The Indianapolis Indians hit three home runs en route to an 11-3 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Saturday afternoon at Werner Park. Enmanuel Valdez, Tyler Callihan and Rafael Flores Jr. broke open the game via the long ball for Indy.

Omaha (10-9) opened the game with a pair of first-inning runs before Indy (6-14) evened the game in the top of the second. A two-out rally was kicked off by a walk from Flores Jr. and a single from Enmanuel Valdez. Davis Wendzel doubled them both home to knot the score early. Abraham Toro hit his second homer of the year in the bottom of the second to give Omaha a 3-2 lead.

Indy tied the game again, to begin a barrage of nine unanswered runs, with Alika Williams bringing home Callihan on a sacrifice fly in the third. Enmanuel Valdez jumpstarted the trio of Indians home runs with a solo shot in the fourth, his first of the season. After a walk by Wendzel, Callihan sent his first homer of the season over the right field wall for a 6-3 lead. Flores Jr. launched the third of the game in the fifth inning, swatting a ball to right field to extend the lead to 8-3. Indy tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to conclude the scoring at 11-3.

Carson Fulmer (W, 2-0) started in place of Wilber Dotel and delivered a strong performance, allowing three runs across 5.0 innings. Chris Devenski followed with 2.0 scoreless of his own and Joe La Sorsa blanked the Storm Chasers across the final two frames.

In a bullpen game, Ben Sears opened the game with two runs across 2.0 innings and Shane Panzini (L, 1-1) allowed four across 1.1 frames to follow. Six total pitchers entered the game for Omaha.

The Indians and Storm Chasers conclude their six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET. Indianapolis RHP Noah Davis (1-2, 2.29) takes on MLB rehabber RHP Stephen Kolek (0-0, 0.00) in a rematch of Game 1.

IU BASEBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After hitting the ball at a high level all week, the Indiana Baseball team (17-22, 6-12 B1G) couldn’t make the necessary in-game adjustments to get going on Saturday (April 18) afternoon. As has been the case all year, offensive struggles were persistent in the middle game of another series. IU worked just four runs on seven hits in an 8-4 loss to Abilene Christian (19-19, 2-4 WAC) at Bart Kaufman Field.

Runners left on base in timely situations came back to hurt late in the game. The Hoosiers were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. They left the bases loaded in the opening inning and failed to get anyone across with two on, no outs in the fifth inning. Late solo home runs from redshirt freshman catcher Brayden Ricketts and sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny weren’t enough to close the deficit.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brayton Thomas (L, 1-3) was rolling through the first three innings. He had already racked up seven strikeouts (career high) through three frames and was sitting on just 44 pitches. But the fourth inning proved costly for the young southpaw. A series of free passes opened the door to the IU bullpen and shifted all the momentum back to the visitors. A two-run single from Kanon Sundgren put Abilene Christian in front for good.

IU will have a chance to win the series with its third rubber game in the last three weeks. The Hoosiers will have a plethora of bullpen arms available – including graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold. First pitch in the deciding weekend contest is set for Noon in Bloomington on B1G+.

• IU’s quartet of pitchers provided 13 strikeouts. On the flip side, they combined to walk eight batters.

• The Hoosiers held the top four hitters in the Abilene Christian lineup without a hit.

• Cooper Malamazian and Cole Decker each had multi-hit efforts in the loss.

Notes to Know

• Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie just keeps hitting. His hitting streak is now out to 20-straight games with his reached base streak at 21-consecutive contests. Tomorrow, Koskie will have a chance to match Alex Dickerson (21 – 2010) for the longest hitting streak (single season) by an IU player in the last 16 years.

PURDUE SOFTBALL

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Purdue (30-15, 9-9 Big Ten) secured the series victory over Rutgers, sweeping the Saturday doubleheader, using a dominant offensive outburst in game one before holding off the Scarlet Knights in game two.

Moriah Polar continued her dominant season, earning her 200th career-hit and etching her name into the record book once again, becoming the program’s single-season record holder for runs scored (55), breaking Katie Mitchell’s record from 2007. With her 85th hit of the season, Polar also tied the program’s single season hits mark, set by Ashley Hall also in 2007.

Purdue is on record watch as a team for single-season runs, RBI, and home runs for the 2026 season, with senior Khloe Banks also just five runs away from setting a new career-record at Purdue.

In game one, Purdue erupted early and never looked back, plating nine runs in the top of the first inning. The inning featured RBI hits from Khloe Banks, Anna Moore and Ashlynn Campbell, along with multiple bases-loaded walks and hit-by-pitches to break the game open.

Banks sparked the offense with an RBI triple, while Moore added a two-run double and later contributed another RBI single in the frame. Purdue sent 14 batters to the plate and built a commanding lead in the first.

The Boilermakers added insurance throughout the game, including an RBI groundout from Bella Douglas in the third, a sacrifice fly from Kylie Franks in the fifth and an RBI double from Moore in the sixth.

The Scarlet Knights did not go down easy, and matched each Purdue effort with runs of their own, plating 11 runs to Purdue’s 13.

In the circle, Brooke Perez earned the win, working into the middle innings before Purdue used a combination of pitchers to secure the victory, with Julia Gossett earning her third save of the season. The staff limited Rutgers’ momentum despite a late push that included a two-run homer from the Scarlet Knights.

The Boilermakers broke through in the third inning, when Haley Painter delivered a two-RBI double to give Purdue its first lead of the game.

After Rutgers answered with solo home runs in the third and fifth innings, Purdue responded in the seventh. Capitalizing on an error and aggressive baserunning, the Boilermakers pushed across two runs on RBI singles from Khloe Banks and Painter to regain control.

Gossett handled the rest, going the distance in the circle to earn the win after closing out game one with a save in game one.

Purdue returns to action next weekend as it continues Big Ten play hosting Northwestern, and taking on UIC and IU Indy for a pair of midweeks.

PURDUE BASEBALL

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball posted a six-run inning for the second day in a row on its way to scoring a dozen, rolling past Ohio State 12-7 Saturday to clinch a sixth consecutive series victory.

The Boilermakers (27-11, 14-6 Big Ten) won for the ninth time in their last 10 Big Ten games and improved 18-6 since March 10. With losses by USC and Oregon on Saturday, Purdue moved into sole possession of third place in the conference standings.

The Boilermakers clinched their first series win vs. Ohio State (19-18, 9-8 Big Ten) at home since the 1987 NCAA Regional team swept a four-game set vs. the Buckeyes at Lambert Field. Purdue’s six straight Big Ten series wins remains a team first since the 2012 conference championship team won its first seven. No. 1 UCLA (20-0 Big Ten) is the only other squad to win six straight Big Ten series this season.

Gavin Beuter worked four innings of shutout relief in his finest outing of the season and his best performance at Alexander Field in two years as a Boilermaker. Saturday he was the only pitcher for either team that went unscored upon while working at least a full inning. Beuter (2-0) retired 11 of the 14 batters he faced while surrendering just two singles, setting down nine consecutive Buckeyes after giving up a base hit to the first man to stand in against him.

Both teams posted four consecutive zeros over the middle innings before the bats woke up again late in the game. Aaron Manias and Jackson Bessette homered in the seventh and eighth innings to help Purdue extend its lead. Manias’ majestic 400-foot blast sailed over the top of the right field foul pole and cleared the bullpen. Bessette connected for a two-out, two-run, opposite-field blast the following frame – his first home run as a Boilermaker at Alexander Field. The senior had a multi-homer game for UIC in March 2025 at Alexander.

Corner outfielders Avery Moore and Quincy Malbrough have been pivotal to Purdue’s continued winning ways while injuries have impacted the lineup over the last four weekends. They delivered yet again Saturday, finishing the victory a combined 4-for-8 with four RBI and four runs scored. Malbrough had three RBI over the first two innings as the Boilers raced out to an 8-2 lead. He was also safe at the plate by an eyelash on a first-inning double steal with Bessette. Moore doubled to center field twice to go along with a bases-loaded walk.

Another new addition to the lineup, second baseman Zach Zychowski, had three hits in the 9-hole while continuing to make plays all over the infield as Purdue’s frequent infield shifts led to outs. Zychowski’s RBI single capped the six-run inning as the Boilers batted around. He also tripled to right center and scored moments later on a squeeze bunt from Eli Anderson.

Manias was also 3-for-5 in the victory.

STREAKS EXTENDED

• Eli Anderson: 14-game hit at home

• Avery Moore: 13-game on-base; 8-game hit; 12-game on-base in Big Ten play; 7-game on-base at home; 6-game hit in Big Ten play; 5-game hit at home

• Sam Flores: 12-game on-base in Big Ten play

• Aaron Manias: 10-game on-base in Big Ten play; 6-game hit in Big Ten play

• Quincy Malbrough: 9-game-hit; 9-game on-base at home; 8-game hit at home; 7-game hit in Big Ten play

• Westin Boyle: 8-game on-base; 6-game hit; 6-game hit in Big Ten play; 5-game on-base at home

• Zach Zychowski: 5-game on-base in Big Ten play

• Jake Kramer: 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings; 12 consecutive scoreless innings at home

Purdue improved to 10-1 on Saturdays this season, nine of those wins coming behind pitcher Zach Erdman. The lefty handed off the ball to the bullpen early on this day but not before making a nifty behind-the-back pick on a sharp comebacker for the first out of the third inning.

Jake Kramer got the final two outs of the game to close out a fourth straight Big Ten victory. He’s pitched in each of the last five games overall, working seven scoreless innings during that span. The Purdue closer still has not been charged with a run at home this season.

The Boilermakers used seven pitchers in the win. Nick Kolze accounted for four outs as the penultimate man out of the bullpen. The senior entered the game with the bases loaded, no outs and Purdue up 10-4 in the top of the eighth. Kolze rolled up three consecutive ground ball outs to keep the Buckeyes from putting up a big inning.

With the Boilers up 8-4 in the top of the seventh, Jarvis Evans struck out OSU cleanup hitter Dane Harvey to strand a pair of runners. Harvey has connected for three homers in the series.

While winning series vs. Illinois and Ohio State over the last two home weekends at Alexander Field, Purdue ended three-series win streaks of both opponents. Now the Boilermakers have an opportunity to sweep consecutive series in Big Ten play for the first time since their team-record 11-game conference win streak in April 2024. That stretch featured Purdue’s last three-game series sweep at home (vs. Michigan State).

Sunday’s series finale is set for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch.

NOTRE DAME BASEBALL

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Notre Dame baseball team out-scored No. 8 Florida State down the stretch, but the comeback effort was not quite enough in a 9-7 setback in game two of the three-game series.

Drew Berkland led the game off with a home run to center field to give the Irish an early 1-0 lead.  Florida State, however, put up for runs in the bottom of the first to gain a 4-1 advantage. The Seminoles added two in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead.

Jack Radel picked off a runner at second after a lead-off double by the Seminoles. A pop up and a ground out later, the Irish retired the Florida State side in order.

Bino Watters tagged one the opposite way for a solo homer to left-center field to make it a 6-2 game midway through the fourth.

After the Seminoles made it a 9-2 game, the Irish cut away at the deficit in the top of the sixth. Noah Coy hit a one-out double up the right field line, and Mark Quatrani drew a walk. Bino Watters drove in Coy with a double to left field. Parker Brzustewicz then had a perfectly-placed single up the middle to drive in Quatrani and Watters for a 9-5 score. Brandon Logan drew a full-count, two-out walk to load the bases, and Jamie Zee used a single to left field to drive in Brzustewicz to make it 9-6.

Caden Crowell retired the side in order in the bottom half of the sixth with a strikeout, a fly out and another strikeout. The Irish defense used a 6-4-3 double play to end the seventh as the score continued to stand at 9-6.

Crowell added two more strikeouts before inducing a grounder to end the eighth to retire the side in order.

Down to their final at-bats, the Irish continued to battle. Noah Coy drew a lead-off walk before Mark Quatrani singled through the left side. Parker Brzustewicz put the ball in play as the Seminoles’ shortstop bobbled the ball, allowing Coy to score to make it a two-run game. The comeback effort, however, was stopped there in the 9-7 final.

Bino Watters went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBI and a run. Parker Brzustewicz added a hit, drove in three and scored once. Noah Coy had a 2-for-3 effort at the dish with a double, a walk and two runs. Drew Berkland had a home run, and Jamie Zee had a hit and drove in a run. Mark Quatrani posted a hit and scored once, and Jayce Lee added a hit.

Jack Radel shouldered the pitching decision in three innings of work on the mound. Kellan Klosterman made an appearance in relief, and Radek Birkholz struck out a pair in two-thirds of an inning. Caden Crowell went 4.0 in relief and matched his career-best mark with six strikeouts.

The Irish (17-17, 7-13 ACC) will square off with the Seminoles in the series finale starting at 1:00 p.m. ET at Dick Howser Stadium.

NOTRE DAME SOFTBALL

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Notre Dame softball team (19-26, 8-12 ACC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead against the Syracuse Orange (16-19, 3-12 ACC) and never looked back, winning 9-5. It’s the third series win of the year for Notre Dame, and the second on the road.

The eight conference wins are the most under Kris Ganeff after having seven last year as the Irish inch closer to an ACC Softball Championships berth. The Irish are now 14-0 when scoring six or more runs in a game this season.

The left side of the infield put on a show Saturday. Junior Avery Houlihan had a career-high three hits, including a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. It’s the first of the year for the Irish shortstop and her second career long ball. Houlihan scored and drove in two runs each. Freshman Ava Zachary launched her fifth home run of the year, a missile out to center field that scored Mickey Winchell and made it a four-run game late in the sixth inning. Notre Dame’s third baseman scored three runs to go along with her three RBI. Zachary’s 26 RBI on the year are a team-high.

The pitching duo of Brianne Weiss and Kami Kamzik combined to just allow five hits on the day while striking out five Orange. Weiss picked up the win, improving to 8-8 on the season, while Kamzik picked up her third save of the year.

Notre Dame goes for the sweep tomorrow, with first pitch set for noon eastern on ACCNX.

DURHAM, N.C. — The No. 1/1 Fighting Irish grinded out a 7-6 win over No. 16/15 Duke inside Koskinen Stadium on Saturday, improving to 9-1 on the season and 2-1 in ACC play. Notre Dame has now won three straight, all coming against ranked teams.

Thomas Ricciardelli was masterful in goal, making 15 saves while allowing just six goals to keep the Duke offense quiet throughout the game.

Matt Jeffery turned in the best game of his Irish career, scoring a hat trick and finishing with a career-high three goals. Freshman Dylan Faison also had a breakout performance, finishing with a career-high three points on two goals and an assist.

Tyler Spano continued his impressive form at the dot, winning 7-of-11 faceoffs while picking up six ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Notre Dame scored on the game’s opening possession as Matt Jeffery beat his defender and finished past the goalie with a lefty finish on the run to give the Irish an early 1-0 lead within the opening minute of play.

The remainder of the first frame was dominated by both defenses as neither side was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the quarter. Ricciardelli was sharp early, making three stops in the opening 15 minutes of play.

Duke quickly evened the score at 1-1, taking advantage of an extra-man opportunity in the first minute of the second quarter. The Irish immediately answered, scoring 30 seconds later, as Will Angrick buried his shot off the feed from Will Maheras to retake the lead at 2-1.

The Blue Devils managed to score the final two goals of the first half to take a 3-2 lead into the halftime intermission, marking just the second time the Irish have trailed after the first 30 minutes of play this season.

After a scoreless first seven minutes of the third, the Irish offense came to life, scoring four straight to take a 6-3 lead with less than 2 minutes left in the quarter. Jeffery got the attack going with an incredible spin move to get open before scoring his second of the day.

Jalen Seymour followed with his first goal of the game, firing high into the top corner to give the Irish a 4-3 lead. Jeffery completed his hat trick with his third of the day before Dylan Faison scored his first to complete the run and build the three-goal lead.

Duke was able to pull one back right before the end of the third, scoring on a man-up situation to make the score 6-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Faison was able to push Notre Dame’s lead back up to three at 7-4 with 5:50 left in the game, finding space and shooting into the far corner for his second of the afternoon.

Duke scored twice in the final six minutes of play but the Irish defense held strong and didn’t let the hosts complete the comeback, as Notre Dame won by a score of 7-6.

STAT OF THE GAME

Notre Dame has held seven of its last eight opponents to single-digit goals, all resulting in victories. The Irish have given up a combined 19 goals in the last three games, all coming against ranked opponents.

The victory gives the Fighting Irish a record of 29-8 against ranked opponents since the beginning of the 2023 season.

BALL STATE MEN’S VB

MUNCIE, Ind. – The seventh-ranked Ball State men’s volleyball team opened the 2026 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Saturday evening, taking a straight-set win (25-18, 26-24, 25-15) over Northern Kentucky in the quarterfinals.

The Cardinals (23-4, 13-3 MIVA) claim their third sweep over the Norse (5-19, 2-14 MIVA) in 2026 to advance to the semifinal round, and 2026 MIVA Coach of the Year Mike Iandolo captured his first postseason win at the helm of the program.

Ball State’s offense was firing away inside Worthen Arena, hitting .552 as a squad, the unit’s second-highest percentage this season. The team’s best was .563 during a sweep at Maryland Eastern Shore (Jan. 30). The Setter duo of Lucas Machado and Griffin Satterfield guided the Cardinals’ efficient night, serving 23 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Cardinals set the tone early in the opening frame with back-to-back service aces from Patrick Rogers. The MIVA Player of the Year started a run that saw Ball State score seven of the frame’s first eight points. From there, the red and white cruised to a comfortable 25-18 win.

Rogers totaled a season-high, and match-best, three aces in the contest. He also led both sides with 12 kills, including five in set one alone on seven attempts. Rogers finished the contest with a .550 clip. Wil Basilio and Ryan Louis each added six kills in the match while Jacob Surette, Daniel Günther and Marty Canvan contributed four.

NKU brought a competitive fight to the second frame, forcing the match’s only tied scores (12) and lead changes (two). While the Norse kept it even, Ball Sate’s defense kept them alive, tallying 6.0 of the team’s 8.5 total blocks in set two. Machado had three as Rogers, Surette, and Basilio had a pair each. Louis also contributed one in the frame. With the set tied at 24, a NKU attack error set up a Rogers kill to take a two-set advantage.

Machado led the match with four total blocks, followed by Surette and Basilio who had three. Basilio also had five digs, the second-highest total of the contest behind libero Victor Scherer’s six.

The third set was a showcase of Ball State’s depth, as the Cardinals cruised to a 25-15 finish to complete the sweep. Marty Canavan provided a major spark late, tallying all four of his kills on just five swings. Will Patterson entered the match in the third, matching Rogers with three kills along with a block to help seal the win.

The Cardinals turn their attention to April 22 as they host their semifinal matchup versus No. 13 McKendree. Streaming will be available on ESPN+  and the start time is to be announced.

Kent State struck first in a contest that started at 6 p.m. after originally being scheduled for 3 p.m., on a two-run home run from Brody Williams in the second inning. Luke Matthews hit a two-run double in the fourth frame, and Ripken Reese produced an RBI grounder in the seventh for the hosts.

EVANSVILLE SB

PEORIA, Ill. – Saturday’s final two games against Bradley saw the University of Evansville softball team pick up two victories to clinch the series at OSF Healthcare Field. The pitching staff was crucial as Alexis Tucker, Elle Jarrett, and Kate Ridgway combined to allow one run in the final two games of the weekend.

Game 2 – UE 2, Bradley 0 (continued from Friday)

After weather halted the game in the 5th inning on Friday, the teams resumed play on Saturday as the Purple Aces finished with the 2-0 victory.

Evansville opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on Friday. Maliyah Wilkins led off with a double and would score on an RBI single by Emma McDonald. One inning later, it was Wilkins who picked up the RBI. After Taylor Howe hit a 1-out double, Wilkins singled up the middle to double the lead to 2-0.

Following the weather stoppage in the 5th, the game picked up where it left off on Saturday. The Braves picked up a hit in the 6th and two more in the 7th, but UE was able to finish with the victory. Alexis Tucker made the start and threw 6 1/3 innings. She allowed six hits and struck out four on the way to her sixth win of the season. Elle Jarrett recorded the final two outs to earn her first save of 2026.

Wlikins and Howe picked up two hits apiece as the Aces finished with seven in the contest.

Game 3 – UE 3, Bradley 1

Saturday’s rubber match saw the Purple Aces open a 3-0 lead before hanging on to clinch the series with the 3-1 victory.

UE jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top half of the 2nd. Morgan Adams hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a Jess Willsey sacrifice. With two outs, Angela Valentine hit a single to left to bring in Adams. After Keghan Pye reached on an error, Brooke Voss singled to left to score Valentine for the second run of the game.

After the offense gave her the lead, Kate Ridgway settled in retiring six batters in a row. In the top of the 4th, Voss’ RBI double scored Valentine to make it a 3-0 game. The Braves loaded the bases in the fifth and stranded two in the sixth, but Ridgway got out of both jams.  Down to the final three outs, Bradley rallied once again in the bottom of the 7th. They scored their first run of the game before loading the bases before Ridgway registered the final two outs to seal the win.

Voss and Wilkins recorded two hits apiece while Voss drove in two of the three UE runs. Valentine scored twice. Ridgway went the distance striking out six batters while giving up three hits to win her 9th game of the season.

Belmont added another run in the fifth with a solo home run before scoring four more runs in the sixth to break the game open.

Evansville got two runs back in the eighth, starting with a walk to Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and singles from Haire and Longmeier to load the bases. Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois) drew a walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run and Baftiri drove in a run with a groundout to make it 9-4 in favor of the Bruins.

Belmont got the runs right back in the eighth, however, retaking a 7-run lead.

Evansville would not go down quietly in the ninth, putting two out with two outs, including a single by McConnell to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Haire stepped up next and drilled his sixth home run of the season, making it an 11-7 game, but a strikeout ended the game as the Bruins evened the series at one game apiece.

PURDUE FT. WAYNE MEN’S VB

CHICAGO – The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball season comes to a close after falling in four sets (27-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-16) to the second-seeded No. 10 Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Saturday evening (April 18).

Loyola Chicago opened the match with an early 5-1 run in the first set. The Mastodons evened the score at 14-14 following a 6-2 scoring stretch. Owen Banner and Brody McAfee aided kills during the run. The set saw two more ties, 20-20 and 23-23, before the Ramblers pulled away at 27-25.

Both teams hit their highest hitting percentage in the second set, Loyola Chicago at .458 and the ‘Dons with a .414 clip. The opening to the frame was highly contested, resulting in a Purdue Fort Wayne 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The Ramblers pulled away with a 5-1 run that resulted in a 25-20 conclusion.

Loyola Chicago looked to be running away with the third set, holding a 14-7 lead after an 8-1 scoring stretch. But, the Mastodons used a late set surge to fend off the Ramblers. Kaden Fosdick entered the match as a service substitution and started a 10-4 run with a service ace. Brody McAfee capped off the run with an ace to give the ‘Dons a 28-26 set victory.

The Ramblers owned the final frame, hitting .455 and holding Purdue Fort Wayne to .207. Loyola Chicago used runs of 9-3 and 5-0 to finish off the match at 25-16.

Logan Muir led the match with 18 kills, and six digs. McAfee notched a career-high 14 digs on a .500 hitting percentage, adding three blocks. Andrew Mayer recorded 10 digs in the match. Hunter Hopkins finished with 47 assists.

No. 19 Purdue Fort Wayne finishes the season at an even 12-12 on the year, 7-9 in MIVA play. Loyola Chicago moves on to the MIVA Semifinals at 19-7, 12-4 in the MIVA.

SOUTHERN INDIANA BASBEBALL

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior right-hander Ryan Weller threw eight shutout innings to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 4-2 win over the University of Tennessee at Martin Saturday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI, which snap a five-game losing streak, is 21-18 overall and 5-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference this season, while UTM goes to 19-19, 6-8 OVC.

Weller (3-3), who blanked the Skyhawks through the first eight innings, had his shutout ruined by a pair of UTM runs in the top of the ninth. The junior right-hander allowed the two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five in eight-plus innings of work.

USI started the scoring in the first inning when senior catcher Micajah Wall legged out a RBI-single for the 1-0 lead. The 1-0 lead would remain until the third inning when the Screaming Eagles pushed three runs across for a 4-0 advantage.

Wall struck for a second time with a RBI-single to center for a 2-0 lead, while senior leftfielder Hunter Miller and junior second baseman Zion Stephens finished up the scoring with RBI-singles of their own to center field.

The 4-0 lead would stand until the ninth inning when UTM pushed a pair of runs across before USI senior right-hander Andres Gonzalez closed the door on a 4-2 victory. Gonzalez was credited with one ining and struck out one to get his third save of the season.

For the game at the plate, Wall finished the contest with a pair of hits and two RBIs, while senior first baseman Patrick McLellan, senior shortstop Clayton Slack, and graduate rightfielder Noah Foster also had a pair of hits in the win.

SOUTHERN INDIANA SB

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Softball began its second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference road series on Saturday with a series-opening 7-2 setback against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

USI Softball (13-22, 10-9 OVC) broke a scoreless tie to grab the lead in the top of the fourth inning, but SIUE (20-24, 11-8 OVC) rallied with seven unanswered runs in the final few innings.

In an early pitcher’s duel, freshman pitcher Anna Kemp and SIUE starting pitcher Avery Arwood kept offense at a premium through the first few innings, with the game scoreless after three.

In the top of the fourth inning, back-to-back singles to lead off the frame for USI got the Screaming Eagles’ offense going. After pushing two runners into scoring position, junior catcher Alyssa Mumaw squeezed in a run to put USI on the scoreboard first. A sac fly by sophomore designated player Grace Huffman in the next at-bat doubled USI’s lead to 2-0.

However, SIUE responded in the bottom of the fourth with five runs, utilizing a small-ball approach to their advantage during a few at-bats in the inning.

Even though the Eagles were able to get the first two on base in the fifth and sixth innings, the Cougars kept USI from scoring while adding two more runs in their home half of the sixth to gain a five-run difference before closing out the contest.

USI outhit SIUE in the game, 6-4. Freshman outfielder Katelyn Marx led USI with two hits, while Mumaw and Huffman tallied an RBI each.

In the pitching circle, Kemp ended up with a no-decision. The right-hander went three innings with two strikeouts and allowed two runs, but only one was earned. Sophomore pitcher Kylie Witthaus (3-7) was charged with the loss in relief, going three innings and surrendering five runs – four earned – with a strikeout.

SIUE’s Arwood (7-6) recorded the win and went the distance, giving up the two runs.

The Screaming Eagles and Cougars decide the series on Sunday with a Noon doubleheader. Both games can be seen with an ESPN+ subscription. Additional coverage and live stat links are available on the USI Softball schedule page on usiscreamingeagles.com.

“SPORTS EXTRA”

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1900 – The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Braves, 19-17, in 10 innings, to set a major league record for most runs scored by two clubs on Opening Day. The Braves scored nine runs in the ninth inning to put the game into extra innings.

1920 – Al Schacht, who later became the “Clown Prince of Baseball,” was all business as he pitched the Senators to a 7-0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

1928 – The Yankees are out of first place for the first time since May 1926 as they lose the morning Patriots Day game in Boston.

1938 – In the top of the first inning at Philadelphia, Ernie Koy of the Dodgers homers in his first major league at-bat. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff man Heinie Mueller also hits a home run in his first time up in the major leagues.

1949 – At pre-game ceremonies marking the season opener in Yankee Stadium, a granite monument to Babe Ruth is unveiled in center field. Plaques honoring Lou Gehrig and Miller Huggins are also presented.

1950 – Sid Gordon of the Braves hits the first N.L. grand slam of the season, as Boston beats the Giants 10-6 at the Polo Grounds. There will be 35 in the league and 68 in all in 1950. Both are records but both are later topped.

1956 – The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, in 10 innings at Roosevelt Stadium in the first major-league game ever held in New Jersey.

1965 – At a cost of $20K, the outer Astrodome ceiling is painted because the sun’s glare makes fielding fly balls hazardous. This will cause the grass to die and spur the introduction of artificial turf.

1966 – In the first regular season game at Anaheim Stadium, California drops a 3-1 decision to the White Sox before 31,660 fans. Rick Reichardt hits the Angels’ first regular-season home run in the new facility.

1979 – Following a 6-3 loss to the Orioles, Yankees Rich Gossage and Cliff Johnson brawl in the clubhouse. Gossage sustains a sprained ligament in his left thumb and will be sidelined until July 12.

1981 – In an International League night game, the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Sox played to a 2-2 tie through 32 innings before play was suspended at 4:07 a.m. The game was completed later in the season with Pawtucket scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning of the longest game in professional baseball history.

1981 – In the first game of a doubleheader the Oakland Athletics set a major league record for consecutive wins at the start of the season, running their record to 11-0 with a 6-1 win over Seattle. The Mariners win the nightcap 3-2 on Richie Zisk’s solo home run in the eighth inning.

1984 – Kansas City’s Bret Saberhagen picks up his first major league victory as the Royals beat the Tigers 5-2. It is the first loss of the season for the red-hot Tigers, who began the year 9-0 and will never fall out of first place in the A.L. East.

1986 – Oakland’s Jose Rijo sets a club record with 16 strikeouts in eight innings as the A’s beat Seattle 7-2. The two clubs combine for 30 strikeouts overall, setting the modern major league record for a nine-inning game.

1987 – Dale Sveum’s two-run home run off Greg Harris caps a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and gives the Brewers a 6-4 win over Texas and a 12-0 record, breaking the 1981 A’s record for the best start in A.L. history.

1996 – The Rangers explode for 16 runs in the eighth inning of a 26-7 demolition of the Orioles. The eighth-inning outburst comes within one run of the record for most runs in an inning this century and raised Jesse Orosco’s ERA from an ugly 9.82 to an almost unfathomable 27.00. Orosco is relieved by infielder Manny Alexander, who gets the last two outs but walks off the mound with a 67.50 ERA.

1997 – The first major league game is played in Hawaii. The Padres, who gave up three home games to further baseball relations and to further renovations at their stadium, play host for a doubleheader against St. Louis at spacious Aloha Stadium. The Cardinals win the doubleheader 1-0, and 2-1.
