MLB ROUNDUP: D-BACKS CLIMB WITHIN 1 GAME OF PHILS IN NL WILD-CARD RACE
Lars Nootbaar homered on the game’s first pitch Friday night and Nolan Arenado added his 30th homer as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks tightened the National League wild-card race with an 11-4 rout of the San Diego Padres.
Arizona scored in six of the first seven innings to earn its sixth straight win and move within a game of Philadelphia for the final NL wild-card spot with two games remaining. Should the teams finish with identical records, the Diamondbacks would win the tiebreaker.
Brandon Pfaadt (8-3) allowed nine hits and four runs in 7 2/3 innings to beat the Padres for the third time this year. Casey Mize (6-10) absorbed the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits in four innings.
Despite the defeat, San Diego moved closer to clinching home-field advantage in the NL wild-card round. The Padres are 1 1/2 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, who were swept in a doubleheader at Boston, and two games up on Philadelphia.

Freddy Peralta and four relievers combined on a four-hitter as Tampa Bay shut out host Philadelphia and put the Phillies’ playoff hopes on hold for at least one more day.
Nick Fortes homered for the Rays, who had already clinched the top seed in the American League playoffs. Peralta (10-11) gave up four hits — all singles — in 5 1/3 innings.
The Phillies came in with a magic number of two to clinch a wild-card berth but got no closer to wrapping up a playoff spot. Philadelphia starter Cristopher Sanchez (18-7) struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits.

Michael Stefanic and Henry Bolte each drove in two runs during a six-run sixth inning and Jacob Lopez tossed six strong innings as the Athletics won in West Sacramento, Calif., to keep Houston tied atop the division and ensure a dubious mark will be set this postseason.
The Astros (79-81) remain in a first-place tie with the Rangers (79-81) in the American League West thanks to Texas’ loss Friday night. Houston holds the tiebreaker due to dominating the season series, 9-4. The West champion will be the first team in major league history to reach the playoffs without a winning record, excluding shortened seasons.

Luke Keaschall went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, as Minnesota pulled away for a win over Texas in Minneapolis.
Kody Clemens went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for the Twins. Minnesota’s Joe Ryan (7-10) allowed two runs on four hits in six innings.
Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford had one RBI apiece for the Rangers. Jacob deGrom (11-11) was battered for eight runs on eight hits in four innings, though he struck out five to top 200 for the season.
Guardians 12, Royals 9
Angel Martinez recorded two of his four RBIs with a double during an eventful ninth inning that saw Cleveland draw six walks and score five runs as the Guardians won in Kansas City to remain atop the AL Central.
The Royals’ Nate Pearson (2-4) walked four batters in the ninth, including Jose Ramirez with the bases loaded and two out to break a 7-7 tie. After two more walks issued by Nolan Hoffman, Martinez broke it open with a two-run double.
Postseason-bound Cleveland overcame four runs, five hits and four walks allowed over 3 1/3 innings by starter Gavin Williams, thanks in part to 13 walks issued by the Royals. The Guardians won for the eighth time in nine games and stayed a game ahead of the Chicago White Sox.
White Sox 6, Rockies 1
Munetaka Murakami went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs and Sean Burke pitched effectively into the sixth inning to carry Chicago past visiting Colorado.
The White Sox kept pace with the Guardians. Despite being a game out of the Central lead, Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland should the teams finish tied. Both sides have already clinched a playoff berth.
Murakami connected in the first and seventh innings for the third multi-homer game of his rookie season. Burke (11-7) won his third straight start, allowing one run and four hits over 5 1/3 sharp innings.
Red Sox 4, Cubs 3 (Game 1)
Roman Anthony went 3-for-3 with three runs, including one on Connor Wong’s tiebreaking double in the seventh inning, leading Boston past visiting Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader.
Adley Rutschman was 2-for-4 for the Red Sox, tying the game with a two-run single in the fifth. Greg Weissert (4-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Raymond Burgos fired two perfect innings for his second save.
Matt Shaw and Michael Busch both had multiple hits and Miguel Amaya drove in two for the Cubs. Alex Bregman, returning from multiple facial fractures sustained five days earlier, went 0-for-4 as the designated hitter.

Wilyer Abreu broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning, lifting Boston to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Chicago.
Red Sox reliever Jedixson Paez (1-1) handled the final five innings en route to his first big-league win. Starter Brayan Bello pitched the first four frames.
Chicago got five shutout innings from David Peterson before Javier Assad (6-2) took the loss.

Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer and a solo shot as Baltimore rolled to a victory at New York in the opener of a doubleheader.
Dylan Beavers added a grand slam and Jeremiah Jackson hit an inside-the-park homer for the Orioles. Baltimore reliever Albert Suarez (3-0) tossed four scoreless innings.
Yankees starter Brendan Beck (0-2) allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings.

Spencer Jones and Anthony Volpe had run-scoring hits in a three-run sixth inning as New York earned a doubleheader split against visiting Baltimore.
Will Warren (11-6) threw 3 2/3 shutout innings for the Yankees, who will host an AL wild-card series against the rival Red Sox for the second straight season.
The Orioles (79-82) had their four-game winning streak stopped and clinched their second straight losing season. Leody Taveras had two hits and two RBIs.

Eury Perez didn’t allow a hit for five innings and finished with a one-hitter in his first career complete game as host Miami defeated Atlanta.
Perez (8-11) walked one and struck out eight. Joe Mack broke a scoreless tie with a seventh-inning solo homer. The Marlins added two runs in the eighth, including a solo homer from Griffin Conine.
Sean Murphy’s leadoff single in the sixth was the Braves’ lone hit. Grant Holmes (10-6), used in relief for just the second time this year, pitched four innings and allowed one run.

Tarik Skubal warmed up for the postseason with seven dominant innings, Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages provided all the offense with home runs, and visiting Los Angeles blanked San Francisco.
Skubal (12-7) allowed just three singles and no walks in winning his fourth consecutive outing. He struck out 10. Tanner Scott threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 24th save.
The Giants managed only three hits, all singles, as they lost their third straight overall and their sixth in a row to the Dodgers. Yunior Marte (0-2) gave up two runs on six hits in five innings.

Brice Turang’s tiebreaking two-run single keyed a four-run eighth inning as Milwaukee beat visiting St. Louis.
Jackson Chourio singled to open the eighth off Luis Gastelum (5-4). Justin Bruihl took over and hit a batter, committed a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt and gave up Turang’s hit. William Contreras singled in Garrett Mitchell, and Jake Bauers plated Turang with a sacrifice fly.
Abner Uribe (6-3) got the win with a scoreless eighth. Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson and Ivan Herrera all homered for the Cardinals, who have lost seven of their past nine.

Kazuma Okamoto keyed a four-run seventh with a two-run double as Toronto edged visiting Cincinnati.
Okamoto, who also hit an RBI double in the first inning, has 92 RBIs this season to lead the Blue Jays. Mason Fluharty (7-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win. Louis Varland tossed a perfect ninth to log his 35th save.
Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run for the Reds. Elly De La Cruz stole his 30th base of the season to go with 30 homers, making him the fourth player in Reds history to register a 30-30 season.

Spencer Torkelson finished a single shy of the cycle and drove in three runs as host Detroit held off Pittsburgh.
Eduardo Valencia reached base five times and scored three runs, while Dillon Dingler drove in two runs for Detroit. Jackson Jobe (3-3) gave up two runs and three hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Rafael Flores Jr. hit a three-run homer for the Pirates while Ryan O’Hearn supplied two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Starter Bubba Chandler (8-10) gave up six runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Dylan Crews homered and scored three runs as host Washington held off New York, assuring the Mets of a last-place finish in the NL East.
James Wood, Jacob Young and Daylen Lile had two hits each for the Nationals, who have won three straight. Wood also walked twice. Washington reliever Gus Varland (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Josiah Gray picked up his first career save.
Bo Bichette and Carson Benge homered for the Mets, who dropped their second game in a row and are assured of finishing last in the division for the first time since 2003.

Reid Detmers pitched six scoreless innings of two-hit ball as Los Angeles prevailed at Seattle.
Christian Moore and Zach Neto homered and Wade Meckler had four hits, including a double and triple, for the Angels, who led 6-0 through seven innings before hanging on. Detmers (7-8) walked two and struck out seven.
Mariners starter Bryce Miller (4-10) dropped his eighth straight decision, yielding five runs on six hits over six innings. Dominic Canzone had three hits, including a two-run homer.

REPORT: STEPHEN CURRY, WARRIORS AGREE ON 2-YEAR, $116M EXTENSION
The Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension, ESPN reported Friday night.
The deal, according to the report, includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.
ESPN also reported that Curry will receive $20 million less than what he could have maxed out at to give the Warriors more salary-cap space for next offseason. According to the report, Curry and the team had been working on several contract ideas once he became eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million max deal in August.
If Curry plays through the 2028-29 campaign, it would be his 20th season, all with the Warriors.
The 38-year-old was limited to 43 games last season, with much of the time missed because of a lingering knee injury. Nonetheless, Curry averaged 26.6 points, 4.4 made 3-pointers and 11.3 attempted 3-pointers per game — all above his career averages.
A 12-time All-Star drafted seventh overall out of Davidson in 2009, Curry has two scoring titles, two MVP awards and a Finals MVP award to go with four NBA championships. However, the Warriors are coming off a 37-45 season, their worst in a non-shortened season since going 36-46 in 2010-11.
Earlier this week, Curry said he wanted “no drama” with the contract talks, particularly with camp opening next Tuesday.
“The idea of getting back to work is exciting,” Curry said Wednesday. “I feel like I’ve taken advantage of the offseason. I feel like there’s no hesitation about where I’m at physically going in. … But I’m excited about getting back to work.”
Curry has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.0 made 3-pointers and 9.4 attempted per game. The latter two marks are NBA records, as is his career .912 free-throw percentage.
He also holds the NBA career marks for 3-pointers made (4,248) and attempted (10,073).

PRESIDENTS CUP DAY 3: SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER, SAM BURNS TO FACE JAPANESE DUO
After the United States was walloped 5-0 in Friday’s five foursomes at the Presidents Cup, captain Brandt Snedeker is relying on a mix of old and new to start Saturday off right.
Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns will head out together for the third time in as many sessions, but for the first time they will play in the anchor match instead of the opener in morning four-ball at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago.
Their opponents on the International team — which leads the competition 7-3 in a surprising turn — will be Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune.
Justin Thomas and Jackson Koivun will play in the opening match against Australia’s Min Woo Lee and South Korea’s Sungjae Im. The Korean pairing of Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim will stay together for the third consecutive session and go up against Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark. And Chris Gotterup and Cameron Young will take on Canadians Nick Taylor and Corey Conners before the Scheffler/Burns tandem tees off last.
Of the four American pairings, three of them won a point on Thursday in the initial four-ball (best-ball) session. The only new combination is the long drivers Gotterup and Young, neither of whom have collected a point so far.
Snedeker conceded at his press conference that the U.S. had to “look at” its game plan.
“We’ve got a lot of high-character guys in our room,” the first-time captain said. “I love the way the guys competed today. It’s a long golf tournament. I keep telling those guys this is a football game and we’re not even at halftime yet. We’ve got three more sessions to go, a lot of golf in front of us. I’m really confident in our guys. I’m really confident in what they bring to the table. I’m excited about this challenge.”
Scheffler and Burns beat Lee and Im 1 up on Thursday before Conners and Taylor struck back Friday with a 1-up win over the tandem.
Matsuyama and Hisatsune reunite for the International side after they scored their team’s first point with a 3-and-1 win over Young and Xander Schauffele. The Kim/Kim pairing is the hottest one going, having defeated Gotterup and Patrick Cantlay 3 and 2 on Thursday and Cantlay/Schauffele 4 and 3 in a Friday foursomes rout.
Sitting out the Saturday morning session for the U.S. are Cantlay, Schauffele, Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman. The Colts enter Week 3 having lost nine consecutive games and their last five meetings with the Houston Texans.
But more important than any of that history – most of which doesn’t apply to the 2026 version of the Colts – is the reality of this game. The Colts are 0-2. So are the Texans.
And that means the losing team on Sunday will incredibly difficult challenge ahead: Not only will they be 0-3, but they’ll be 0-1 in the AFC South – and every loss will be against an AFC opponent.
“It’s definitely mandatory to win this weekend,” wide receiver Josh Downs said. “Gotta win the division and beat those type of opponents, so I feel like it speaks for itself in that.”
Here are a handful of things to watch when Sunday’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium:
Will tackling improve?
Defensively, the Colts’ focus this week has been on fixing several issues that’ve cropped up over the first two weeks of the season, chief among them tackling: The Colts enter Week 3 having missed 28 tackles, per Pro Football Focus, the second-highest total in the NFL.
That’s not the only point of emphasis for Lou Anarumo’s group, but it’s one that head coach Shane Steichen pointed to as the main issue plaguing a defense that struggled to contain the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs to begin the season.
“We’ve got to tackle better,” Steichen said. “I think we had a ton of missed tackles last week, last couple weeks, and those are leading to explosive plays, especially in the run game. And then we’ve got to be great on the back end in coverage. I mean, it’s all part of it. All ties in together. The rush and coverage work together, and we got to get that stuff cleaned up moving forward so we’re not giving up those big plays and those yards.”
While Texans running back David Montgomery managed just 10 yards on six carries in Houston’s Week 2 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, he’s a shifty, powerful back known for grinding out extra yardage after contact. Those yards can be the difference between an inefficient rush (three or fewer yards on first down, for example) or an efficient rush (four or more yards on first down), which can ultimately lead to the difference between a remarkable third down for Houston or an opportunity for Anarumo to throw an exotic blitz at Stroud and the Texans’ pass protection.
What is the Texans’ offense without Nico Collins?
We’ll see if Collins, who missed Week 2 with a hamstring injury and did not participate in practice Wednesday or Thursday, is able to suit up on Sunday.
It’s probably not this reductive, but Houston scored 31 points with Collins in Week 1 (against the Buffalo Bills) and six points without Collins in Week 2 (against the Bengals). Montgomery and running back Woody Marks combined for 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in Week 1; in Week 2, they combined for 18 yards on 14 carries.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud, meanwhile, attempted a career high 55 passes in Week 2 against the Bengals and had just a 74.3 passer rating. Houston’s offense, needless to say, was completely out of whack in Week 2.
Whether Collins plays or not on Sunday, though, the Colts are expecting the Texans’ offense to be nowhere near as anemic as it was last weekend. Plus, this is a defense with its own issues to fix: The Colts enter Week 3 last in the NFL in yards allowed per game, yards allowed per play and points allowed per game.
Granted, the Colts have those stats after facing Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes, but that’s hardly an excuse you’ll hear around 56th Street.
“Everybody’s got good players. Those two guys are, as you mentioned, in my opinion, first-ballot Hall of Famers,” Anarumo said. “But still no excuse. We have to go out there and perform at a better level, and in crunch time, make sure we make the plays that need to be made. And make the plays that are there to be made. I think there’s plenty of plays on Sunday night where our players, myself – and it starts with me obviously, but all of us together, we’re in this as a collective unit. Not just the players. It’s not the coaches. It’s us together, and I think that we are all taking that collective approach to improve. Each meeting, each practice, certainly each play in every game. So that’s our approach, and that’s how we’ll continue to go at this thing.”
How will the Colts handle Houston’s defense?
The Texans’ defense could tell itself a similar story to the Colts, in that they enter Week 3 allowing 28 points per game (T-26th) and 6.1 yards per play (27th) after facing Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills and Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals. Those results certainly do not match preseason expectations for the Texans, who many national analysts pegged as not just having a great defense, but a defense that could be the best of its generation.
Two games against top-tier quarterbacks, then, did not change how the Colts view Houston’s defense.
“All three levels they’ve got playmakers,” quarterback Daniel Jones said. “They can get after the passer. They’ve got good DBs, good linebackers. So, it’ll be a good challenge for us, but confident in our group.”
Jones was not sacked in the Colts’ Week 2 loss to the Chiefs, but the challenge in Week 3 will be different. Kansas City’s focus is generating pressure on exotic blitzes, while Houston is able to crush the pocket with a four-man rush headlined by defensive ends Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.
While the Chiefs and Texans’ strategies are different, though, the Colts’ plan remains the same: Be efficient on early downs and don’t get pinned into second- or third-and-long situations.
“They’re really good when they can pin their ears back and rush,” Jones said. “I think yeah, staying ahead of the chains, staying on schedule, being able to run the ball – and I think we did that well last week, and continue to try to emphasize that.”
Another challenge for the Colts will be stretching the field without speedy wide receivers Alec Pierce (heel) and Ashton Dulin (ankle) against a talented, cohesive Houston secondary. Darius Slayton was signed earlier this week to add downfield juice to the Colts’ offense – 18 of his 22 career touchdown receptions went for 20 or more yards – but how quickly he can be deployed in Sunday’s gameplan remains to be seen.

Indiana and Las Vegas will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Sept. 29 for Game 2 of the best-of-three series at 6:30 p.m. ET on Prime. Should a Game 3 be required to determine a winner, the two sides will go back to Las Vegas on Thursday, Oct. 1.
In the regular season, the Fever and the Aces faced each other three times, resulting in a 2-1 record for Indiana, with both wins coming on the road. To clinch their spot in the playoffs, the Aces earned a 31-13 record, ending the year with a 100-82 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Sept. 24.

LEE BEEBE JR. RUSHES FOR 203 YARDS AND NO. 4 INDIANA HOLDS OFF SURPRISING NORTHWESTERN 29-23
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana running back Lee Beebe Jr. waited a whole year for an opportunity like the one he got Friday night.
And with starting running back Turbo Richard out with an injury, Beebe gladly showed everyone what he could do.
On a night the Hoosiers looked nothing like the defending national champs, Beebe carried 24 times for 203 yards, scored one touchdown and his late 70-yard burst set up Josh Hoover’s game-sealing 1-yard score with 1:56 to go as No. 5 Indiana held on for a 29-23 victory over Northwestern. Beebe was so good, he even earned the highest praise from coach Curt Cignetti.
“That guy’s got a lot of heart,” Cignetti said. “Boy, he’s got as much heart as anyone that’s been in this program the last three years. Not only didn’t he step in, he played and fortunately they couldn’t tackle him. It was all grit and heart.”
The Hoosiers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) extended the Football Bowl Subdivision’s longest active winning streak to 20 games and the longest home winning streak to 19 — barely.
Northwestern was within 15-13 early in the fourth quarter and had two chances to tie because of a pass-interference call on its first 2-point attempt. But the Hoosiers stopped quarterback Aidan Chiles on a designed run to preserve the lead.
Following a facemask penalty on third-and-19 that gave Indiana a first down, Beebe ripped off a 39-yard run and then ran for a 4-yard TD with 9:39 left to make it a two-score game. After Northwestern cut the deficit to 22-20, Beebe ran 70 yards to the Wildcats 5-yard line. Six plays later, Hoover scored.
Northwestern fell just short of beating a defending national champion for the first time since 1971 and a top five foe for the first time since 1959.
“Our guys kept battling, our coaches kept battling, but the frustrating thing was — I have all the respect for Indiana — but we beat ourselves,” Wildcats coach David Braun said. “We should be coming out of here with the win.”
They certainly had Indiana befuddled in the second half, right down to the final minute.
Jackson Kleather made a 42-yard field goal with 58 seconds left to make it a one-score game, but the Wildcats (2-1, 0-1) couldn’t recover the onside kick.
Hoover was 19 of 29 for 201 yards and a touchdown, Charlie Becker had seven catches for 98 yards and Beebe had his second 100-yard game of the season after Turbo Richard left with a lower right leg injury in the first half.
Chiles was 22 of 29 for 293 yards and touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.
The Wildcats opened the game with a goal-line stand, but Chiles fumbled the snap on their first offensive play and Rolijah Hardy tackled him in the end zone for a safety.
Indiana made it 5-0 on Nico Radicic’s 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter and extended the margin to 12-0 with Nick Marsh’s 8-yard TD catch with 5:04 left in the first half.
But that’s all the Hoosiers could muster in a half in which they held Northwestern to 51 total yards and minus-5 yards on the ground.
The takeaway
Northwestern: The Wildcats couldn’t get anything right offensively in the first half, but coordinator Chip Kelly turned Chiles loose in the second half and it got them back into the game. The failed 2-point try and the defense’s failure to get off the field coast them late.
Indiana: Poll voters penalized the Hoosiers last week, dropping them one spot after a 38-0 rout of Western Kentucky. And this was as vulnerable as Indiana’s defense has looked in more than a year. Whether it’s an aberration is unclear, but it’s likely the Hoosiers will drop in the AP Top 25 again.
Injury report
Richard appeared to suffer a lower right leg injury when he was tackled out of bounds in the second quarter though no penalty was called. Indiana is also missing RB Khobie Martin with a broken arm. The Hoosiers also lost linebacker Hardy in the second half, and he walked from the field straight to the locker room. Cignetti did not provide any postgame updates.
Northwestern played without injured cornerback Braden Turner and lost cornerback Josh Fussell on the game’s first series. He was in street clothes and on crutches before the first quarter ended. Chiles also left for one play after he apparently suffered a dislocated finger on his nonthrowing hand.
