NFL ROUNDUP: COWBOYS’ LAST-MINUTE TD CAPS BIG 2ND HALF, UPENDS TEXANS

Javonte Williams ran for three touchdowns in the second half and CeeDee Lamb scored on his 17th reception of the  game with 40 seconds remaining as the Dallas Cowboys collected a high-voltage 34-30 comeback victory over the host Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

Lamb posted a career-best 17 receptions and totaled 189 yards to help the Cowboys overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. Jason Witten (18 in 2012) is the only Dallas player to have more receptions in a game. Dak Prescott completed 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards and Williams had 62 yards on 19 carries for the Cowboys (2-2).

C.J. Stroud was 21-of-31 passing for 347 yards and two touchdowns for the Texans (0-4), who have lost their first four  games for the first time since 2020. Nico Collins caught seven passes for 118 yards and two scores after a two-game absence due to a hamstring injury. Woody Marks rushed for a score.

Stroud guided the Texans on a nine-play, 87-yard drive to take a 30-27 lead with 2:23 left. The pivotal play was on third-and-14 from the Dallas 27-yard line. Stroud threw a short pass to Dalton Schultz at the 25. His lateral to David Montgomery was good for 19 more yards to the Cowboys’ 6. Marks scored on the next play. Prescott then drove Dallas 74 yards on 11 plays, eventually connecting with Lamb for the winning points.

Patriots 29, Bills 26

Drake Maye completed 22 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns, including a late, go-ahead TD pass to Efton Chism III, to lead New England over Buffalo in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Chism’s leaping, one-handed 23-yard TD catch plus Maye’s pass to Rhamondre Stevenson for the two-point conversion put the Patriots in front with 1:50 to play. Craig Woodson intercepted a Josh Allen pass at the New England 19-yard line on the ensuing possession, and the Patriots (2-2) were able to run out the clock and hand the Bills (3-1) their first loss in their new stadium.

Allen was 23-of-33 passing for 253 yards and one touchdown. Buffalo’s Keon Coleman caught six passes for 116 yards and a TD. James Cook rushed for 75 yards and a score.

Ravens 24, Titans 18

Lamar Jackson threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-20 passing but exited early in Baltimore’s home victory over Tennessee.

Jackson was sacked on the Ravens’ final play of the second quarter by Jermaine Johnson II, who landed on Jackson’s left ankle. Jackson was later seen on the sideline with his ankle wrapped. Tyler Huntley played the second half and completed 8 of 9 passes for 63 yards, but the Ravens (3-1) were held scoreless after taking a 24-7 lead to the half.

Cam Ward’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Wan’Dale Robinson and two-point conversion pass to Gunnar Helm pulled the Titans (0-4) within six with 1:12 left. But Malaki Starks recovered Tennessee’s ensuing onside kick with 1:10 left and Baltimore ran out the clock.

Rams 24, Eagles 20

Kyren Williams rushed for two late touchdowns to rally Los Angeles over Philadelphia on a soggy afternoon in Philadelphia. Williams scored from 1 yard out with 3:59 left and from 7 yards out with 1:10 remaining to lift the Rams.

Matthew Stafford overcame two first-half interceptions and finished with 317 yards on 32-of-51 passing for the Rams (2-2). Puka Nacua had a touchdown run to go with 125 yards on nine catches and Williams gained 147 yards (80 rushing, 67 receiving) from scrimmage. Byron Young sealed the win with two sacks on Philadelphia’s final drive.

Jalen Hurts threw two touchdowns to Darius Cooper and Philadelphia (2-2) built a 20-10 lead by halftime, but the offense largely struggled after losing Saquon Barkley to an early hamstring injury and finished 0-for-12 on third-down conversions with only 172 yards of offense. Hurts completed 12 of 27 passes for 93 yards.

Jaguars 22, Bengals 17

Trevor Lawrence completed 18 of 23 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown to lead visiting Jacksonville past Cincinnati.

It was the first time Lawrence defeated Joe Burrow in four career meetings. Bhayshul Tuten ran 17 times for 73 yards while Chris Rodriguez Jr. added a 25-yard touchdown run for the Jaguars (3-1).

Burrow was 39-of-54 passing for 428 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Tee Higgins caught 11 passes for 157 yards while Chase Brown caught 11 passes for 71 yards for the Bengals (2-2), who played the second half without Ja’Marr Chase due to concussion symptoms.

Bears 23, Jets 12

Kyle Monangai rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns and Tyson Bagent passed for 268 yards to boost host Chicago to a victory against New York.

Chicago (3-1) limited New York (1-3) to 157 total yards as the Jets lost their third  game in a row. The Bears rolled up 492 yards of offense while collecting 34 first downs to the Jets’ seven. Bagent finished 25-of-34 passing, Rome Odunze had six catches for 94 yards and Monangai finished with 30 carries.

Geno Smith connected with Isaiah Williams for a 58-yard touchdown pass for New York, which enjoyed a rare bright spot when safety Minkah Fitzpatrick picked off Bagent in the second quarter. That stopped a record drought of 21  games without an interception for the Jets, who snagged their first pick since Jan. 5, 2025.

Giants 36, Cardinals 24

Jameis Winston threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns as New York outlasted Arizona in East Rutherford, N.J.

The Giants (3-1) shrugged off a 14-3 deficit as Winston fired second-quarter touchdown passes to Malachi Fields and Malik Nabers (six catches, 112 yards). Winston’s 11-yard strike to Theo Johnson with 1:44 left in the third erased Arizona’s last lead.

Jacoby Brissett hit 21 of 35 passes for 166 yards, two yards and three interceptions. He drove the Cardinals (1-3) to the Giants’ 2-yard line in the final minute trailing 30-24, but Deonte Banks picked off a fourth-down pass and returned it 98 yards for a score on the game’s final play.

Colts 30, Commanders 13

Jonathan Taylor ran for two touchdowns, and the Colts pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the undermanned Commanders in London.

Taylor finished with 95 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, as Indianapolis (2-2) made the most of their 257 yards. Quarterback Daniel Jones shrugged off a pair of early turnovers to complete 19 of 34 passes for 143 yards and an interception.

Washington (1-3) played most of the day with rookie Athan Kaliakmanis at quarterback after starter Marcus Mariota suffered a right knee injury in the first quarter and wasn’t able to return. Kaliakmanis completed 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Packers 17, Buccaneers 14

Jordan Love threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns as Green Bay held on against Tampa Bay in Tampa, Fla.

Matthew Golden and Tucker Kraft caught 2-yard touchdown passes from Love as the Packers (2-2) never trailed. Evan Williams and Edgerrin Cooper picked off passes and Trey Smack booted a 58-yard field goal to give Green Bay a 10-7 halftime lead.

For Tampa Bay (0-4), rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels hit 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards and rushed for 55 yards in his first start playing for the injured Baker Mayfield (thumb). Sean Tucker rushed for a touchdown and Kenneth Gainwell caught a 10-yard touchdown pass to cut the Packers’ lead to 17-14 with 14:49 to play.

49ers 24, Broncos 14

Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey scored 1-yard touchdowns, George Kittle took a screen pass 56 yards for a clinching score and San Francisco remained unbeaten with a victory over Denver in Santa Clara, Calif.

Eddy Pineiro contributed a 24-yard field goal and linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who played last season for the Broncos, led a strong San Francisco defensive effort with 12 tackles, helping the 49ers open the season with four consecutive wins for the second time in the past four years.

Bo Nix went 25-for-42 for 214 yards, connecting 10 times with RJ Harvey for 68 yards for the Broncos (2-2). J.K. Dobbins had 40 of Denver’s 82 rushing yards.

Sam Darnold was 13-of-22 passing for 168 yards and two scores for Seattle and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had five catches for 76 yards.

Justin Herbert completed 19 of 31 passes for 189 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Chargers (0-4), who committed four turnovers. The teams combined for 30 penalties, the most in an NFL  game this season.

Walker III had 22 carries for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes won his 99th regular-season game and threw two TD passes to wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who exited with a leg injury. Wideout Rashee Rice also left the game with a first-quarter injury. The Chiefs (4-0) enter their bye week as the last undefeated team in the AFC.

After Kansas City scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 19-second span, Kirk Cousins (365 passing yards, two TDs) led a touchdown drive for the Raiders to cut the deficit to 30-27 with 1:46 left. Las Vegas’ (3-1) would-be game-winning drive ended on his lone interception in the closing seconds.

SEVEN FROM SUNDAY

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played during the 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. ET windows on Sunday, October 4, the fourth week of the 2026 season.

With two games remaining in Week 4, 13 games were within one score in the fourth quarter, while 10 games were decided by one score (eight points or fewer), including five teams – Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Rams, and New England – that recorded the game-winning score in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.

There have been 18 games this season to feature a game-winning score in the final four minutes of regulation or in overtime, tied with 2025 (18 games), 2022 (18) and 2021 (18) for the second-most such games through the first four weeks of a season. Only 1983 (19 games) has more.

There have been 37 instances this season of a team scoring at least 30 points in a game, the second-most such times through Week 4 in NFL history, behind only 2020 (52 times).

Three teams – Kansas City, Minnesota and San Francisco – advanced to 4-0 this season. With the Chiefs and Vikings, it marks the first time since 2013 that two teams that missed the playoffs the year prior began the season 4-0.

There have been 15 field goals made from 50-or-more yards in Week 4, tied for the fourth-most such field goals made in a single week in NFL history, trailing only Week 1 in 2024 (21), Week 4 in 2024 (19) and Week 2 in 2025 (17).

Dallas wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had a career-high 17 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ 34-30 win at Houston.

Lamb is the fourth player in NFL history with at least 17 receptions, 185 receiving yards and a touchdown reception in a single game, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Tom Fears (Dec. 3, 1950 with the Los Angeles Rams) and Terrell Owens (Dec. 17, 2000 with San Francisco) as well as Brandon Marshall (Dec. 13, 2009 with Denver).

Kansas City running back Kenneth Walker rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 30-27 win over Las Vegas.

Walker, who has at least 175 scrimmage yards in three games this season, joins Billy Sims (1980 with Detroit) as the only players in NFL history with at least 175 scrimmage yards in three of his first four games with a franchise.

Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns in the Colts’ 30-13 win over Washington in London.

Taylor, who is 27 years old and has 19 games with multiple rushing touchdowns, tied Clinton Portis (19 games) for the fourth-most games with multiple rushing touchdowns by a player under the age of 28 in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (28 games), LaDainian Tomlinson (26) and Jim Brown (21) have more.

Taylor has 75 career rushing touchdowns and became the fifth running back under the age of 28 with 75 career rushing touchdowns in NFL history, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (108 rushing touchdowns), LaDainian Tomlinson (100) and Jim Brown (82) as well as Adrian Peterson (76).

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns for a 144.2 passer rating, while tight end Mark Andrews had a touchdown reception in the Ravens’ 24-18 win over Tennessee.

Jackson, who is 29 years old and has 43 career games with at least two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher, tied Russell Wilson (43 games) for the fourth-most such games all-time by a player under the age of 30. Only Patrick Mahomes (52 games), Josh Allen (50) and Aaron Rodgers (45) have more.

Andrews recorded his 57th career touchdown reception, tying Travis Kelce (57 touchdown receptions) for the fourth-most touchdown receptions by a tight end in their first nine seasons in NFL history. Only Rob Gronkowski (79 touchdown receptions), Pro Football Hall of Famer Antonio Gates (76) and Jimmy Graham (71) have more.

Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers had six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown against Kansas City.

Bowers has 2,076 career receiving yards in 31 career games, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Sr. (31 games) as the second-fastest tight end to reach 2,000 career receiving yards in NFL history, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka (30 games).

Bowers, who is 23 years old, has 192 career receptions, surpassing Jason Witten (188 receptions) for the most receptions by a tight end under the age of 24 in NFL history.

Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow passed for 428 yards and a touchdown and had a rushing touchdown against Jacksonville, while wide receiver Tee Higgins had 11 receptions for 157 yards and running back Chase Brown had 11 receptions for 71 yards.

Burrow has eight career games with at least 400 passing yards since entering the NFL in 2020, surpassing Matthew Stafford (seven games) for the fourth-most such games by a player in his first seven seasons in NFL history, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (10 games), Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (10) and Dak Prescott (nine).

With Higgins and Brown, it marks the fourth time in NFL history that wide receiver and running back teammates each had at least 11 catches in the same game, joining the Los Angeles Chargers’ Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler (Sept. 27, 2020), Minnesota’s Moe Williams and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss (Nov. 9, 2003) and Tampa Bay’s Warrick Dunn and Keyshawn Johnson (Nov. 18, 2001).

Additional notes from Sunday include:

Arizona tight end Trey McBride had seven receptions for 31 yards against the New York Giants.

McBride has 380 receptions since entering the NFL in 2022, the second-most receptions by a tight end through their first 70 career games in NFL history, behind only Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow (391 receptions).

Michael Harris II delivers as Braves edge Dodgers to even NLDS

LOS ANGELES — Ray Kerr and Didier Fuentes combined to allow one run over 6 1/3 innings as the Atlanta Braves pieced together a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday to even the National League Division Series at one  game apiece.

Michael Harris II went 3-for-5 with a triple and a double, scored one run and drove in another as the Braves head home in the best-of-five series with  Game 3 on Tuesday.

Left-hander Kerr opened with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, right-hander Fuentes came on in the sixth and gave up a run over 3 2/3 innings, while Raisel Iglesias recorded the final out for the right-hander’s second save of the postseason.

“I think a lot of guys had big at-bats today and pitched really well,” Braves catcher Drake Baldwin said after the win. “Having a bullpen game three  games in a row is tough to do. I think just kind of how our bullpen showed out says a lot about us, and especially when we have some starters lined up for the next two games back in Atlanta. I think it kind of instills some confidence in us and gives us some momentum going back to Atlanta as well.Digital sports desk

Atlanta considered using ace left-hander Chris Sale to start Game 2 after he recorded the final four outs of Thursday’s 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild-card round. Instead, the Braves elected to start him in Game 3.

“I think it means a lot to obviously overcome what happened yesterday, not winning the game, and taking momentum and going back to Atlanta and potentially hand the ball off to either Mahle or Sale,” Harris said. “I think that gives us confidence and motivation to come back with some momentum.”

Freddie Freeman hit a home run against his former team and Max Muncy also went deep for the Dodgers, who went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

“We had opportunities. We just couldn’t get a hit when we needed to,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We didn’t throw out a bunch of hits but there was still traffic. We didn’t need many hits tonight to have a different result, and we just couldn’t get it.”

Left-hander Blake Snell lasted just 3 2/3 innings for Los Angeles, allowing one run on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts while throwing 90 pitches.

The Braves got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Ronald Acuna Jr. singled with one out, stole second base and scored on Mauricio Dubon’s two-out, bases-loaded infield single. Atlanta left the bases loaded in the inning.

The Dodgers got even in the fourth when Freeman hit a home run against right-hander Grant Holmes. It was Freeman’s seventh home run against the Braves since leaving the club after the 2021 season.

Atlanta took the lead for good in the fifth inning at 2-1 when Harris tripled to left field with two outs against Kris Bubic (0-1) and scored on a wild pitch.

Harris made it 3-1 for the Braves in the seventh on an RBI double to right field against Edgardo Henriquez.

Fuentes was one out away from finishing off the victory when Muncy hit a home run to right on a 3-2 fastball.

Kerr, Holmes, Dylan Lee (2-0), Robert Suarez, Fuentes and Iglesias combined to hold the Dodgers to two runs on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

“I think we all knew it was going to be a really good series. Just two really good teams going at it,” Freeman said. “Pitching has been really good in both games so far. We have to find a way to score some runs without hitting a home run. I think that’s our biggest thing right now. Get guys on base, get that big hit and hopefully our pitching keeps doing what they’re doing.”

JACKSON CHOURIO WALK-OFF SINGLE GIVES BREWERS 2-0 NLDS LEAD ON PADRES

MILWAUKEE — Jackson Chourio singled in two runs with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 walk-off victory over the visiting San Diego Padres on Sunday and a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five National League Division Series.

The Brewers, with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after winning 103  games, trailed 3-2 entering the ninth against Padres closer Mason Miller trying to complete a six-out save.

Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick drew consecutive one-out walks. Pinch hitter Gary Sanchez walked with two outs and Chourio followed with a line drive to center off a 101-mph fastball from Miller, who had 38 saves in the regular season and one in the wild card sweep of the Cubs.

“Watching those at-bats beforehand, I knew that he was a little bit erratic,” Chourio said via translator. “He was throwing some balls. I knew that he was going to come at me with the fastball at some point, so mentally I was just making sure that I was prepared for that.”

Padres manager Craig Stammen asked Miller to complete two innings twice during the regular season, most recently on Sept. 4 in a 3-2 10-inning victory over the New York Yankees in San Diego.

“I think top of the lineup (batting) in the eighth probably made that decision for Mason,” Stammen said. “I think going into the  game we were thinking of Mason for six outs anyway, especially how quick the eighth inning went for him. He was just battling the strike zone there at the end.”

The Brewers were stymied early by Padres starter Michael King, who allowed one run on three hits and departed after hitting Chourio with a pitch to open the sixth.

King retired the first 14 hitters before Yelich’s two-out double to right in the fifth inning. Frelick’s RBI single pulled Milwaukee within 2-1.

San Diego capitalized on the Brewers’ third error for an unearned run in the seventh off Abner Uribe to go in front 3-1. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on a error by third baseman David Hamilton and Manny Machado drew a two-out walk. Ty France followed with an RBI single, but the inning ended with Machado being thrown out trying to advance to third.

The Brewers got an unearned run back in the bottom half when Garrett Mitchell singled, advanced to third on a walk and fielder’s choice and scored on an error by second baseman Jake Cronenworth.

Brewers starter Logan Henderson allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in five-plus innings.

San Diego scored one in the first after Henderson was within one pitch of a perfect inning. Machado drew a two-out walk after being behind 0-2, then advanced on a wild pitch. France followed with an RBI single to center.

The Padres increased the lead to 2-0 with an unearned run in the fifth. Luis Campusano cracked a leadoff single, advanced to third on an error and scored on a fielder’s choice.

“One of the favorite games I’ve been a part of,” said Brewers manager Pat Murphy. “And what’s most gratifying to see how many of our great fans came out to see that one and got to enjoy it themselves. Just happy for the club, happy for the city, that they got to witness something so special.”

The series shifts to San Diego for the next two games, if necessary. Right-hander Dustin May is scheduled to start for the Brewers in  Game 3 on Tuesday, opposed by right-hander Nick Pivetta. The Padres swept the Brewers in a three-game series Aug. 10-12 at home.

“It’s a big challenge,” Stammen said. “They’re a great team. You saw how hard they battle us here in Milwaukee. But we like where we are when we play at home. We can defend our home field and then hopefully have a chance to a return trip back to Milwaukee.”

JEENO THITIKUL SECURES 4TH WIN THIS SEASON AT LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP

Jeeno Thitikul didn’t let a late double bogey block her path to a fourth LPGA Tour win this year, responding with birdies on the final two holes to secure the Lotte Championship on Sunday in Honolulu.

Thitikul of Thailand shot 4-under-par 68 to finish at 21-under 267 at Hoakalei Country Club. The 23-year-old started the round atop the leaderboard with a three-stroke margin and kept it for her 11th career victory since joining the tour in 2022.

South Korea’s Ina Yoon also shot 68 and was alone in second at 18 under, followed by Japan’s Miyu Yamashita (67) at 17 under. American Auston Kim (67) was fourth at 16 under despite a stretch of three bogeys from Nos. 12-14.

The No. 2 player in the Rolex world rankings, Thitikul matched top-ranked Nelly Korda with her fourth victory this season.

Thitikul opened with a birdie at the par-5 first hole and shaved single strokes at Nos. 7 and 8 to make the turn at 33 for the day. The back nine started with five pars, then a birdie at the par-3 No. 15 before she ran into trouble when she drove into the water at the par-4 No. 16.

The double-bogey 6 dropped her to 19 under for the tournament, but she regained the shots with birdies at Nos. 17 and 18.

“It definitely feels so bad after finishing the 16, but I also told myself that I still in the bubble, and then I feel like I trying to play my  game, not other or anyone game,” Thitikul said. “So I just really want to focus on what I have, because like on my mind I think whenever if I still have a shot, which mean I still have a chance, no matter it’s going to be good or bad, I have nothing to lose.”

Thitikul hit 11 of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation.

Yoon, 23, had a sizzling start with birdies at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 before a bogey at No. 8 and another birdie at No. 9. The back nine was a balance of two birdies and two bogeys.

Yoon hit nine of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens in regulation on Sunday. She totaled a tournament-best 26 birdies over four rounds.

“It was super fun today,” Yoon said after her second runner-up finish of the season, following the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June. “Jeeno played great, and my first nine holes was putting-wise awesome. Yeah, I think I learn a lot about golf from her. Yeah, it was super nice. She’s nice player and she’s nice person at the same time. Yeah, really congratulations for her. I’m so proud.”

Thitikul said that she knew she had to make birdies with the way Yoon, her playing partner, was making shots in the final round.

“She played really incredible golf today,” Thitikul said. “She opening the round with like five hole, 4-under par, which is, you know, a really like good, good round of golf that she put in. And then it’s a really good battling out with her out there. We have fun.”

AUSTIN SMOTHERMAN NABS 1ST TITLE AT BANK OF UTAH CHAMPIONSHIP

Austin Smotherman survived a back-nine double bogey, birdied three of the last five holes and won his maiden PGA Tour title at the Bank of Utah Championship on Sunday in Ivins, Utah.

Smotherman entered with a one-stroke lead over Doug Ghim and shot a 3-under-par 68 to go 26-under 258 for the week, a new scoring record at the three-year-old tournament. He defeated Ghim by two shots after the latter posted a final-round 69 at Black Desert Resort.

“It didn’t have to be pretty,” an ebullient Smotherman said. “I got some nice bounces. Made some poor swings, but this  game doesn’t have to be perfect.”

Smotherman, 32, earned a two-year PGA Tour exemption and entry into the PGA Championship and The Players Championship. He’s also projected to rise to No. 51 in the FedEx Cup Fall points standings. Players who finish Nos. 51-60 in the fall standings receive invitations to the first two signature events of 2027.

Playing from an awkward lie, Smotherman failed to escape a bunker on his third shot at the par-4 13th hole, and his fourth shot left him 10 feet for bogey, which he could not convert. His three-shot lead shrank to one when he finished the hole.

But he bounced back to birdie the short par-4 14th, and after going birdie-bogey at Nos. 16 and 17, he and Ghim arrived at the par-5 finishing hole with Smotherman ahead by two.

Ghim had an eagle look in the form of a 31-foot chip that could tie Smotherman for the lead. But Smotherman went first and lagged a 70-foot eagle putt to less than 2 feet from the hole to set up an easy tap-in, and Ghim’s chip narrowly missed the cup.

Smotherman said he trusted himself on the 18th to play more conservatively and go for the fat of the green, even though lag putting had been his “nemesis.”

“A lot of good shots, those drives coming down the stretch as well, just piping it down the middle of the fairway, being committed,” he said.

Ghim, who was also angling for his first PGA Tour victory and the perks that would come with, gave his playing partner a hearty congratulations on the 18th green.

He was asked how fun the battle was for him.

“Absolutely. It’s what we play for, it’s what we practice for,” Ghim said. “Obviously the money and the points are great, but as a little kid trying to win a PGA Tour event, just a chance to do that is a dream come true. …

“Today was Austin’s day. I did everything that I could, and hopefully I’ll learn from some of the mistakes and be a little bit more comfortable next time. But always grateful.”

David Ford (64) and Trace Crowe (66) tied for third at 23 under. Kevin Streelman (67) and Ben James (67) tied for fifth at 22 under.

Amateur Kihei Akina, a sophomore at BYU, finished a strong tournament with back-to-back rounds of 65 on the weekend. He finished alone in ninth at 20 under.

“I’d say go back to my roots from here in Utah, even though I’m from Hawaii, but I went to high school here and now I’m obviously in college here in Utah,” Akina said. “I hopefully can set an example for some of the Utah junior golfers out there. I’ve definitely seen that Utah junior golf is making their way up right now, so it’s really cool to see that.”

WITH LOCAL CADDIE’S HELP, STEVEN ALKER CLOSES OUT LATEST WIN IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Steven Alker still has some catching up to do, but performances like Sunday’s will only help.

The New Zealander posted a 4-under-par 66 with clutch birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 to win the inaugural Jefferson Lehigh Valley Classic on Sunday in Allentown, Pa.

It was Alker’s third win in his past four starts on the PGA Tour Champions; in the other start, he tied for second. He’s projected to remain third in the Charles Schwab Cup season-long standings, because Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson have won five and six tournaments, respectively.

But Alker, the Schwab Cup champion in 2022 and 2024, is a formidable foe who’s heating up at the right time.

“Just staying patient,” Alker said of what has changed for him recently. “I’ve been playing so well and put myself in position. And then you’re just trying so hard, your expectations go up. So trying to get those expectations down a little bit, stay patient.”

Alker went 14-under 196 over three days at Lehigh Country Club, edging Tag Ridings (final-round 64) by one shot. Michael Block, the PGA club professional-turned-Champions Tour rookie, held the lead overnight but settled for third at 13 under after a 69.

Alker knocked his tee shot at the par-3 16th hole to a manageable distance and holed the right-to-left putt for birdie to break a tie with Ridings for the lead. Ridings, playing one group ahead, birdied the 17th and parred the 18th only for Alker to do the same.

Making the win more impressive was the fact that Alker lost his regular caddie, Troy Martin, nine holes into the first round Friday when Martin fell ill. A young fill-in with plenty of course knowledge stepped up.

“It’s amazing. Whyatt, he’s a local guy here, he’s only 19,” Alker said. “He’s done a great job, helped me on some putts here and there I just wasn’t sure of because I hadn’t seen the golf course, hadn’t had enough time on it. So, it all worked out. It’s pretty special.”

Alker, 53, celebrated his 14th win on the PGA Tour Champions and his fourth of the season.

The aforementioned Schwab Cup leader Cink fired a 7-under 63, the round of the day, to move up to 11 under and tie for fourth with Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (66) and Australia’s Richard Green (68).

CHASE BRISCOE FENDS OFF KYLE LARSON FOR VICTORY IN VEGAS

A week after surrendering a late lead to points leader Kyle Larson in Kansas, Chase Briscoe got the job done Sunday in Las Vegas.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver grabbed the lead with 39 laps left and fended off Larson on the final lap to win the South Point 400 at the halfway mark of the NASCAR Cup Series postseason at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Briscoe’s No. 19 took the point when teammate Christopher Bell, who had lost power steering, had to pit. Briscoe fought off a hard charge from Larson, who hit the wall off Turn 4, to earn his second 2026 victory by 1.376 seconds in the four-caution race.

The Indiana native led a race-high 175 laps in his first Vegas win, as Toyota won its third straight at the 1.5-mile track.

“I don’t know if I’d have been able to get on the plane,” Briscoe, 31, said when asked if he was worried about beating Larson, who pushed too hard on the last lap and made contact with Tyler Reddick. Both continued to finish second and third, respectively. “From my point in the seat, I don’t know what more (the fans) could want from a cat-and-mouse standpoint.”

Austin Cindric and Ryan Blaney completed the top five on a day when several Chase contenders had issues.

“It was a fight,” Larson said of the race’s problems for him. “I was surprised how off we were on that first run. Was just doing all I could to hang on and get to the pit stop. … My car got better, but track position was so difficult. I just chipped away at it all race long.

“I could tell I was gaining on (Briscoe) pretty quickly, but my tires were getting kind of burnt off by the time I got there (to him).”

Briscoe moved up two positions in the Chase championship standings to sixth, 84 points behind Larson.

The No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports driver lost a lap early but rebounded with the runner-up finish and extended his Chase standings lead to 40 over Denny Hamlin, who ended up 16th.

Bell (-55), Joey Logano (-71) and Blaney (-80) round out the top five title chasers.

On the hottest race day of the season — with temperatures in the upper 90s in the stands and 130 degrees inside the cars — polesitter Hamlin led a Toyota breakaway in the first 35 laps. But Larson pitted on Lap 34, had a 26-second pit stop for an adjustment at the right front and fell one lap down to 32nd.

JGR’s Ty Gibbs was penalized for speeding on pit road, while Hamlin’s car reassumed the lead by nearly six seconds over Briscoe. The first caution flew when Zane Smith looped his No. 38 Ford.

Briscoe stayed out for the lead, and Larson was able to get back on the lead lap as Hamlin pitted for two tires. The No. 11 driver then charged back to fourth but spun by himself with two laps remaining in Stage 1, wasting stage points and damaging his splitter.

Briscoe earned the maximum points with the segment win in his Camry, and Bell, Blaney, Reddick and Cindric filled the top five. However, Reddick and Bubba Wallace received penalties for their pit road service and went to the rear.

The field split again on a debris caution on Lap 94, leaving Briscoe and Bell up front, Hamlin struggling in the low teens and Larson outside the top 20 after pitting for fresh tires and fuel.

Fast last week at Kansas, Cindric led the latter part of Stage 2 but could not hold off Briscoe on his No. 2 Ford’s older tires. Bell, battling power-steering issues, finished the stage third, followed by Blaney and Wallace.

COLTS FOOTBALL

TEA TIME AS JONATHAN TAYLOR RUNS FOR 2 TDS AND COLTS BEAT COMMANDERS 30-13 IN LONDON

LONDON (AP) — Sip some tea, score some touchdowns.

Jonathan Taylor’s secret is out.

The Colts running back rushed for two touchdowns, quarterback Daniel Jones also ran one in and Indianapolis beat Washington 30-13 after the Commanders lost yet another quarterback to injury on Sunday.

Taylor said he enjoyed some tea at dinner on the eve of the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And then he mimicked the same after one of his 5-yard touchdown runs to help the Colts (2-2) win their second straight game.

“I had to show the world, hey, I had a really good tea,” Taylor said.

Marcus Mariota, who was starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, left the game after Washington’s second drive because of a knee injury. The veteran quarterback was sacked and didn’t return for the Commanders (1-3).

Coach Dan Quinn said it looks like an MCL injury and it’s unknown how long he’ll be out.

Third-string rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis threw his first NFL touchdown pass to cut Indy’s lead to 17-13 in the third quarter, but the Colts answered with Spencer Shrader’s 52-yard field goal and Jones’ 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Taylor rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries as the Colts overcame two turnovers from Jones, who completed 19 of 34 passes for 143 yards with an interception and a fumble.

“Can’t afford to turn the ball over like that,” Jones said. “Got to understand when to take a chance, when not to, when to protect the ball, when you have a chance to make a play.”

Kaliakmanis threw a costly interception early in the third quarter and the Colts quickly capitalized. Linebacker Jaylon Carlies picked off Kaliakmanis’ pass at the Washington 27 and returned it to the 20. Taylor’s second 5-yard run of the game made it 17-6.

Kaliakmanis bounced back on the next drive, though, hitting Treylon Burks on a 47-yard touchdown pass that closed the gap to 17-13. Burks got past cornerback Sauce Gardner and found space before hauling in the deep ball.

“It was surreal, man, it was absolutely surreal,” Kaliakmanis said, “but I’ve got to be honest, right now I’m just thinking about the loss. It’s not about me. It’s about this team.”

Shrader later added a 44-yard field goal — his third of the game — to extend Indy’s lead to 30-13.

Kaliakmanis completed 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and the interception.

The Colts led 10-6 at halftime after Taylor’s first 5-yard touchdown run and then Shrader’s 48-yard field goal.

The Commanders failed to capitalize on two red zone opportunities in the first quarter, settling for field goals.

Odafe Oweh drove Colts left tackle Bernhard Raimann backward into Jones causing the quarterback to fumble on Indy’s first drive. Oweh then recovered it at the 21. The Commanders had fourth-and-2 from the 13 but opted for Drew Stevens’ 31-yarder.

Washington then stalled at the Colts 5 on their next drive. On third down, Mariota was sacked at the 11 by Adetomiwa Adebawore and Laiatu Latu. Mariota walked off gingerly to the sideline, and another Stevens field goal made it 6-0, but the quarterback didn’t return.

Attendance was 60,907 for the 13th NFL game played at Tottenham. The league had recently reduced remaining ticket prices to 79 pounds ($105) including for some high-end seats. Attendance has never been below 60,000 in previous games. The venue opened in 2019 and features an NFL field below the Premier League team’s moveable soccer pitch. It was 70 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff.

Global success

Taylor’s big day made him the all-time leading rusher in NFL international games, the Colts said. Taylor had rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns last season in Indy’s 31-25 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Berlin.

“I hope that I can continue to stack that, now that I’m apparently the leader,” Taylor said.

Injuries

Colts: LT Bernhard Raimann was hurt early in the third quarter but returned…. WR Ashton Dulin and DE Arden Key both sustained hamstring injuries.

Commanders: In addition to Mariota, WR Jaylin Lane had a “serious ankle injury,” Quinn said. DE Charles Omenihu had a groin problem… S Tyler Owens left late with a hamstring injury.

Up next

Colts: at Pittsburgh next Sunday.

Commanders: host New York Giants next Sunday.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Winning on the road is never easy in the Big Ten.

The Indiana volleyball team (10-3, 3-1 B1G), which has been away from home since Wednesday, handled a late push from Rutgers to finish off a 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24) victory on Sunday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Jersey Mike’s Arena in New Jersey. The Hoosiers picked up their first Big Ten road win of the season in the process.

IU’s offense hit .288 during the proceedings despite some bumps in the road along the way. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager led the way with 14 kills while fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum (12) and fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry (11) both went into double figures. Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema (8) has had at least eight kills in five-straight matches.

After little impact in the first two frames, IU’s block came alive with nine combined rejections in set three and four. Boersema had a hand in five of the blocks including three of the solo variety. The Hoosiers have held three of four opponents in conference play to a hitting percentage of under .240. Rutgers led in kills (55-53) but had seven more attacking errors than the visitors.

Second-year libero Hannah Leftridge led IU with 12 digs and has reached double-digits in that category in six of the last seven contests. Leftridge, Tatum and third-year defensive specialist provided the five aces from the end line. It’s the fifth time this season that Segal has had multiple aces in a match.

A weekend at home will be much appreciated as IU heads back to Bloomington for matchups against Nebraska (Oct. 8) and USC (Oct. 11). Both matches will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network from Wilkinson Hall as IU looks to keep pace near the top of the Big Ten standings. First serve on Thursday evening is set for 6:30 p.m.

How it Happened

• Veteran players stepped up for IU when it needed it the most. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum had six kills in game four alone. In that set, third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema racked up three blocks – including the match winner to make it 26-24.

• IU’s offense had some lulls along the way but still saw the team hit .288 on the afternoon. It’s the seventh time in the last nine tries that the Hoosiers have been at .280 or better offensively. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic had 42 kills (10.50 per set) in the win.

In that stretch, the Indiana native is averaging 2.63 kills per set and hitting over .400. She also had her fifth match of the year with five-or-more blocks in Sunday’s victory.

• Third-year Emma Segal had a pair of crucial aces in a service run in set four. It’s the fifth time this season she’s had multiple aces in a match. IU’s 5-0 in those five contests. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum shared the team lead in Sunday’s game with two aces of her own.

• Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager has been a force for the Hoosiers this season. She led the way with 14 kills on a .313 hitting percentage in Sunday’s win. It’s her 11th match of the year in double figures and the first with an efficiency above .300 since IU’s win over NC State (Sept. 19, 2026).

• Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry responded from a tough offensive night with 11 massive kills. She was one of three IU players in double figures. It’s the second time this season (13 – vs. Coastal Carolina) and 11th time in her career that she’s had 10-or-more kills in a match.

• Over the last two seasons, IU is 30-2 when playing unranked opponents with just one loss in the Big Ten in that timeframe. It was the ninth-straight win over Rutgers dating back to the spring 2021 season. For the second-straight season, the Hoosiers have reached 10 wins in under 15 overall contests.

IU INDY WOMEN’S SOCCER

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IU Indianapolis women’s soccer team had to rally from behind to claim a 2-1 road win at Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday (Oct. 4). The Jaguars allowed a goal in the 15th minute, but retaliated with goals in the 74th and 77th minutes to earn the win.

“It felt great to get a win on the road,” junior Annaliese Black said. “It was a frustrating first half but we had a great discussion about our resilience as a team and our desire to win the second (half). These were important points for us and it felt great to get them.”

Sophomore Maci Sammons trickled a shot over the endline in the 74th minute for the equalizer before Muldrow redirected a gorgeous header past Purdue Fort Wayne keeper Aimee Abraham for the eventual winner. Black collected assists on both tallies as the IU Indy (4-7-2, 2-3 HL) attack finished with a 21-10 shot advantage and 9-4 gap in corner kicks. Eighteen of the team’s 21 shots came in the second half as the Jaguars were chasing a score after trailing 1-0 at the break.

The host Mastodons (1-9-2, 0-4-1 HL) went in front Madelyn Bravata’s header in the 15th minute that sophomore Isabel Oferosky seemingly had a bead on, but saw the ball elude her and sneak just inside the post.

Junior Bethany Hartigan helped preserve the win in the 87th minute with a calm goal line clearance of a Audriana Rhyner attempt from the left side. Bravata’s rebound attempt sailed high of target for the hosts final attempt of the day.

Senior Caroline Kelley was the Jaguars’ primary weapon for much of the day, firing a team-high six attempts and putting four on frame. Kelley thought she drew a penalty kick opportunity in the 66th minute when she was sandwiched between a pair of Mastodon defenders and tripped up as she attempted to possess along the endline. However, the initial call of no foul was upheld upon review.

Black and Muldrow had three attempts each and three others had two tries. Oferosky made four stops in the victory.

The Jaguars will continue the stretch of three straight road games next Saturday (Oct. 10) when they trek north to take on Green Bay.

BALL STATE WOMEN’S TENNIS

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Facing a heavily stacked field of Power Four opponents, the Ball State women’s tennis team showcased its grit and competitive spirit at the 2026 Hoosier Classic, hosted by Indiana University this past weekend.

The high-caliber, three-day tournament began Friday, October 2, and concluded Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center. The Cardinals went head-to-head with elite competition from host Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Louisville, Miami (OH), Purdue, and Notre Dame.

Despite continuing to navigate a limited roster due to lingering injuries, Ball State battled fiercely throughout the weekend, repeatedly pushing top-tier opponents into grueling three-set matches.

The Cardinals’ singles play was anchored by a pair of spectacular, three-set triumphs over Power Four adversaries. Priyanka Rana outlasted Big Ten foe Sally Xu of Iowa in a thrilling marathon, securing a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory. Anya Tkachyk mirrored that resilient performance on the adjacent courts, knocking off Louisville’s Anshika Jamaal 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to claim a marquee win over the ACC powerhouse.

Ball State also found strong rhythm in doubles action. The dynamic duo of Rana and veteran Sydney Hrehor teamed up for a clinical 6-4 victory over Iowa’s Ida Clement and Xu. Meanwhile, the tandem of Isabel Tanjuatco and Noa Kosman put together a stellar weekend of their own. The duo first upset Notre Dame’s Skye Madatali and Esther Vyrlan, 6-4, before carrying that momentum into a decisive 6-4 victory over Mid-American Conference rivals Maria Comer and Evelyn Rosner of Miami.

“Our players showed incredible toughness this weekend,” fourth-year head coach Sachin Kirtane said. “Even with a shortened lineup, we stepped onto the courts ready to compete with some of the best programs in the region. Taking these Power Four teams to the wire and coming away with significant wins in both singles and doubles is a testament to the hard work and belief this group has. We are finding our stride at the right time.”

The Ball State women’s tennis team will enjoy a well-deserved weekend of rest before returning to action Oct. 23–25 at the MAC Individuals in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

BALL STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER

AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State soccer team earned a season-high three goals in Sunday afternoon’s 3-0 victory at Akron. Three different Cardinals booted the ball into the back of the net for the most goals scored by the team since playing Akron on Oct. 12, 2025.

Anna Kate Robillard started the scoring in the 41st minute off a feed from LG Moncrief to give the Cardinals (4-5-3, 1-2-2 Mid-American Conference) a 1-0 edge.

Audrey Goodyear joined Robillard in scoring her first goal of her career in the 80th minute off another dish by Moncrief. In the 89th minute, Kaelyn Valleau capitalized for the Cardinals’ offense off an Annika Klauss assist to end the day over the Zips (6-5-1, 2-2-1 MAC).

For the day, Ball State took 13 shots (7 on goal) compared to five for Akron (two on goal). The Cardinals earned more corner kicks (4-3) than the Zips and were whistled for more fouls (9-8).

Junior goalkeeper Kate Pallante made two saves in 90 minutes. Five other Cardinals recorded 90 minutes in the victory along with Pallante.

The Ball State defense prevented Akron from getting a shot off in the first half. The Cardinals’ defense has recorded four clean sheets this season.

Ball State will return to Muncie and host Bowling Green at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

BALL STATE FIELD HOCKEY

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Ball State field hockey team (3-8) capped off its two-game North Carolina road trip Sunday afternoon, dropping a hard-fought 3-1 non-conference decision to Davidson (7-5) at Carol Grottoes Belk Turf Field.

Both squads opened the contest locked in a fierce defensive battle, resulting in a scoreless opening frame. The second quarter mirrored the first in intensity until the 22-minute mark, when the Wildcats managed to break the deadlock just before intermission to carry a slim 1-0 edge into the break.

Determined to equalize, Ball State’s offense aggressively pressed forward in the third quarter, orchestrating several dangerous circle entries. However, the Davidson defense held firm under pressure and quickly capitalized on a transitional counterattack, finding the back of the cage to extend their lead to 2-0.

Refusing to back down, the Cardinals immediately answered the Wildcats’ scoring run with a clinical offensive execution of their own later in the frame. Ball State successfully pierced the Davidson backline as Chidochashe Munyonga fired a precise strike past the Wildcats’ goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 2-1, injecting fresh momentum into the Cardinals’ sideline.

Despite the surge, Davidson halted the comeback bid in the final 10 minutes of action, adding a late insurance goal to seal the 3-1 victory.

The Ball State field hockey team returns to #MACtion Friday when it travels to Kent State for a 1 pm ET start at Murphy-Mellis Field.

PURDUE FT. WAYNE VOLLEYBALL

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Behind another stellar performance from Riley Rosneck, the Purdue Fort Wayne women’s volleyball team moved to 4-0 in Horizon League play with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 15-11) win at Robert Morris on Saturday (Oct. 3).

The Mastodons are 4-0 in league play for the first time since 2016.

For the second day in a row, Rosneck recorded 25 kills. In Saturday’s rematch, the junior pin hit .300. She led all attackers, but her teammate Trinity Rye had 17 kills, which matched RMU’s best offensive output.

The ‘Dons were paced by the two-headed monster of Rosneck and Rye on the offensive side, with Haiden Means doing the majority of the setting, dishing out 37 assists. She also added 20 digs, a career-high. Becky Barrett added 12 digs while notching nine assists.

After going up 2-0 and looking like they were going to get an early start on the drive home, Purdue Fort Wayne saw Robert Morris claw back with two very strong offensive sets. RMU hit over .350 in both.

The Mastodons did not panic and relied on their best player. Rosneck had six kills in the fifth set alone, helping the Mastodons never trail in the frame. The ‘Dons jumped out to a 6-1 lead, which included an ace from Means. RMU never got closer than three points from that stage.

While Rosneck and Rye had the volume, Mya Plemons had the efficiency. She had six kills on seven swings for a .714 mark, while adding four blocks, a team-high. Fellow middle blocker Bella DiBuono had four blocks of her own.

With the win, Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 10-7 and 4-0 in league play. RMU fell to 3-13, 1-4.

Purdue Fort Wayne will welcome Youngstown State to the Gates Sports Center on Friday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. It will be the Mastodons’ annual Pink Out contest.

The Screaming Eagles got things started quickly Sunday afternoon, with Rotundo scoring inside the penalty area off an assist from J. Murphy. WIU created several scoring chances with 12 first-half shots, but McGowan made six saves, and the USI defense held strong to protect the 1-0 lead through halftime.

Much like the first half, USI took an aggressive approach to start the second. V. Stevens found N. Stevens from behind the halfway line in the 54th minute, setting up an impressive finish to give USI a 2-0 lead. The Leathernecks responded with a goal of their own in the 74th minute before Church added an insurance goal in the 86th minute to secure USI’s first victory since a 4-1 win over Houston Christian University on October 2, 2025.

Sunday’s win gave USI its first three points of the OVC season, propelling the Screaming Eagles up toward the middle of the conference standings.

USI will next travel to Houston Christian on Thursday to continue its three-game road trip. Thursday’s match will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Team coverage for Thursday’s match will be available on X (@USIMSOC) and Instagram (@usi_msoc). Live stats and ESPN+ coverage can be accessed at USIScreamingEagles.com

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S SOCCER

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer picked up an Ohio Valley Conference point on the road Sunday afternoon after a second-half equalizer by the Screaming Eagles led to a 1-1 tie against Southeast Missouri State University.

USI Women’s Soccer (1-7-5, 0-0-2 OVC) answered an early second-half goal by Southeast Missouri (2-6-4, 1-0-1 OVC) with a corner-kick goal in the 76th minute by junior defender Emma Schut, who posted her second goal of the season to take the team lead in goals scored.

Sunday was USI’s second straight tie to start the OVC season, after a 0-0 draw last Sunday in the OVC opener against the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The Screaming Eagles took 13 shots, five on goal, while the Redhawks had 10 shots, two on target. Schut was one of four Screaming Eagles to record two shots and a shot on goal on Sunday.

USI came out in the first half with pressure and looking to pin Southeast Missouri in their defensive third. The Screaming Eagles tallied five shots in the opening half, with a pair on target by freshman forward Liza Anderson and sophomore defender Paulina Campos. While USI could not find an early tally, the Screaming Eagles’ defense was stout and held the Redhawks without a shot in the first half, carrying the match into halftime scoreless.

Southeast Missouri opened the second half on the attack, getting into the shot column with multiple attempts. In the 49th minute, the Redhawks struck first to take a 1-0 lead on a header from a quick short corner kick.

After SEMO’s initial wave to start the second half, USI regrouped and put the pressure back on late. The Screaming Eagles’ aggression finally paid off on a corner kick in the 76th minute, when sophomore midfielder Olivia Hass served a ball in Schut’s direction for a header to tie the match at one. The tied scoreline held until the final whistle.

Through Sunday’s early slate of matches around the OVC, USI remained in the middle of the standings with two points, while SEMO brought its points total to four to sit in the top three.

The Screaming Eagles return home next Sunday, October 11, for Senior Day and Alumni Day at Strassweg Field, when USI hosts Western Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

VALPO WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Valparaiso University tennis team closed out a solid showing at Illinois State’s Redbird Invitational at Gregory Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill. on Sunday. Two Beacon doubles tandems took third place, while four players captured singles wins on the final day of the event, which serves as the unofficial Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.

How It Happened

Valpo’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs picked up victories in third-place matches in their respective flights on Sunday. In Flight 2, junior Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) and freshman Cathy Beckmann (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Bradley’s Iverson/Sharp. In Flight 3, a walkover against Murray State secured a third-place finish, while the Flight 1 Doubles team placed fourth.

In Flight 2 Singles, sophomore Alexandra Popa (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) picked up her second straight win, beating UNI’s Andrea Noa Gailin 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth-place match.

In Flight 3 Singles, Steven won her seventh-place match on Sunday in straight sets, topping UNI’s Yangjiaxin Li 7-5, 6-3.

After taking third in Flight 5 thanks to a walkover, junior Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) played a consolation match against Bradley’s Jada Iverson and rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win.

In Flight 6, Ana Baron (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point) won her seventh-place match against Murray State’s Molly Null, 6-2, 6-1.

Inside the Matches

Beckmann leads the team with five doubles wins on the season.

Delgado owns a team-best singles record of 6-1.

On Friday, Valpo’s Flight 1 Doubles win came over Drake’s Dookie/Noor. Dookie was a First Team All-Conference player last season. The Flight 2 Doubles tandem beat Belmont’s Sokolovic/Popiol on Friday, and Popiol was a First Team All-MVC performer in doubles last season.

In doubles, Valpo boasted two third-place finishes and all three doubles teams were in the top four in their respective flights. A Beacon placed fifth or better in four of the six singles flights, and six of Valpo’s seven players captured at least one win over the weekend.

Thoughts from Head Coach James Gleghorn

“Today the women returned to form and won the third-place matches at 2 and 3 doubles to set the tone. In singles, we won four matches. It was a strong effort overall for conference singles and doubles championships. I’m really proud of the way we worked this fall. We are going to have a chance to contend in the spring!”

The ITA Midwest Regional begins on Thursday in Urbana-Champaign, Ill.

VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER

The first road conference match of the season proved to be unkind to the Valpo soccer team Sunday, as the Beacons fell to host Murray State by a 3-0 final.

How It Happened

Valpo had the first strong chance of the match early on in the seventh minute, as Kiara Desiderio (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) had a free kick from distance pushed wide by a diving effort from MSU goalkeeper Griselda Revolorio.

That attempt was part of an early barrage from the Beacons, who had six shot attempts in the match’s first 11 minutes.

Against the run of play, the Racers opened the scoring in the 17th minute, as a cross was redirected by a Valpo defender into the goal.

Murray State doubled its advantage in the 59th minute, as a scramble in the box off a corner resulted in a third shot attempt finding the back of the net as Kate Donoghue scored.

The Beacons looked to have pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute, but Desiderio’s dispatch into the back of the net off a rebound was nullified after video review for an offside.

With Valpo continuing to throw numbers forward late, Gabriel Ramdeen scored with just over seven minutes to play for the Racers to cap the scoring.

Inside the Match

Sunday’s match was Valpo’s first on the road in MVC play, and in fact the team’s first road match since Sept. 6 at Milwaukee.

Valpo ended the match with an 18-15 advantage in the shots department, while the Racers held a slim 8-7 edge in shots on goal.

The Beacons also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Thoughts From Coach Marovich

“I was pleased on how the team came out today in terms of the first 25 or 30 minutes of the match. I thought we really built well; our players found really good spaces. They were composed on the ball and were deliberate in their decision-making. This created possession in our attacking third, which creates crosses and shots.”

“Unfortunately, we did not put a chance in the back of the net. Then we lose a runner and concede a goal. Chasing the game on the road in The Valley isn’t ideal, but our team never gives in and they kept working the entire 90 minutes, and the final stats show that.”

“Our finishing touch let us down today, but I love how this group just competes. In this league, you have to have a short memory and prepare for the next match.”

Next Up

Valpo (5-6-1, 1-2-0 MVC) goes back on the road next Sunday, making the trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on UNI at 1 p.m.
