GUARDIANS OUTSLUG WHITE SOX, SEND ALDS BACK TO CLEVELAND FOR GAME 5
CHICAGO — Jose Ramirez and Patrick Bailey homered and had two hits each as the Cleveland Guardians topped the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Thursday to force a decisive fifth game in the American League Division Series.
Guardians pitchers registered 12 strikeouts while White Sox pitchers issued seven walks.
Game 5 is Saturday in Cleveland, with the winner advancing to oppose the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Championship Series.
Chicago squandered a second straight opportunity to clinch a postseason series at home for the first time since the 1906 World Series. Sam Antonacci drove in two runs and Colson Montgomery had two hits.
Expert bullpen management, a White Sox specialty to begin the playoffs, unraveled in the Guardians’ decisive sixth-run sixth inning. Cleveland sent 10 to the plate against three pitchers, with eight straight reaching base via five hits, two walks and a hit batter.
Bailey delivered a go-ahead single, and Jo Adell soon lined an opposite-field, two-run single to right against Grant Taylor to put Cleveland ahead 9-4.
Taylor, who earned four-inning and 1 1/3-inning saves in Games 1 and 2, didn’t retire a batter in Game 4. He yielded four runs and four hits while walking two. The pitcher he replaced, Anthony Kay (1-1), allowed two runs and one hit in one-third of an inning.
Miguel Vargas hit a solo home run against Guardians closer Cade Smith to lead off the ninth. Smith walked Munetaka Murakami before exiting for Gavin Williams, Cleveland’s presumptive Game 5 starter.
Williams worked around a single to record the final three outs. Braden Montgomery lined to left field with two runners on to end the game.
Ramirez had three RBIs, Bailey added two and Nathaniel Lowe had two hits for the Guardians. Erik Sabrowski (1-1) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the victory.
Chicago jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third. Murakami worked a bases-loaded walk against Guardians rookie left-hander Parker Messick before Antonacci lined a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly to right field off Shawn Armstrong.
A pair of fifth-inning homers jump-started the Guardians. Bailey connected against Erick Fedde for a leadoff shot. Jordan Hicks entered the game later in the inning, and Ramirez sent his second pitch into the right field bullpen for a two-run blast and a 3-2 advantage.
Chicago responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Antonacci was hit by a pitch to force in a run before Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice fly to right put the White Sox ahead 4-3.
The White Sox stranded 12 runners compared to seven for the Guardians.

MLB PROPOSES SHORTENING REGULAR SEASON TO 154 GAMES IN 2029, EXPANDING DIVISION SERIES TO BEST-OF-7
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball proposed to shorten the regular season to 154 games from 162 games starting in 2029 and to expand the Division Series to best-of-seven in bargaining with players on Thursday.
Owners also proposed to allow higher-seeded teams in the first two rounds of the postseason to pick their opponents beginning next year and to make Monday a day off for most teams starting in 2029 except for those in one or two nationally broadcast games.
Cutting regular-season games would reduce the opportunity for players to set season and career records.
“Returning to a 154-game schedule would allow us to introduce a weekly off day, which is good for player health, while also creating a new national broadcast window to showcase our most exciting teams and players,” MLB spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement.
“A shorter regular season unlocks making October even better for our fans — with fewer weekday afternoon games, a longer Division Series and more opportunities to see the game’s best pitchers on the biggest stage. And allowing the top seeds to select their opponents in the first two rounds would create compelling storylines, intensify existing rivalries and create new ones.”
MLB said player salaries would not be adjusted to reflect fewer games and bonus provision thresholds — like those that pay players for games played — would be adjusted to reflect the shortened schedule.
The National and American Leagues adopted 154-game schedules in 1904 that had every team in each eight-team circuit playing all opponents 22 times.
The AL switched to a 162-game schedule when it expanded to 10 teams for 1961 and the National League followed suit the next year.
The LCS started in 1969 and were best-of-five through 1984, then expanded to best-of-seven.
Division Series have been best-of-five since their inception for annual use in 1995. Wild card games started with the expansion of the playoffs from eight to 10 teams in 2012 and became best-of-three Wild Card Series when the postseason increased to 12 clubs in 2022.

STEELERS WR MICHAEL PITTMAN JR. (FOOT) TO MISS MULTIPLE GAMES
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. will not have a reunion on the field versus his former team.
Pittman, in fact, will be sidelined for longer than just Sunday’s game against the visiting Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that Pittman will sit out multiple games after re-injuring his left foot.
“It’s the same foot, so it’s going to be a multiple-week injury,” McCarthy said. “We’re still going through the evaluation of his roster position.”
Pittman, 29, has just seven catches for 89 yards in three games (all starts) since he signed a three-year, $59 million contract extension. He was traded by the Colts in March along with a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the Steelers for a sixth-round selection in the same draft.
Pittman caught 80 passes for 784 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns in 17 games (16 starts) with Indianapolis in 2025.
He posted two 1,000-yard seasons with the Colts despite considerable turnover at quarterback since he was drafted 34th overall in 2020. He has caught 492 passes for 5,343 yards and 25 TDs in 98 career games (89 starts).

JALON DANIELS, BUCKY IRVING CARRY BUCCANEERS PAST COWBOYS FOR FIRST WIN
Bucky Irving rushed for a career-high 165 yards and accounted for two touchdowns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers collected their first victory of the season, prevailing 24-16 over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night at Arlington, Texas.
Alex Anzalone recorded an interception with 1:12 left for the Buccaneers (1-4), who had three second-half takeaways.
Jalon Daniels, an undrafted rookie from Kansas, completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown for Tampa Bay. He made his second start in place of Baker Mayfield (dislocated thumb).
Irving, who carried 21 times, ran for one score and caught another. Emeka Egbuka also rushed for a score for Tampa Bay.
Dak Prescott completed 24 of 42 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions off caroms for Dallas (2-3). George Pickens caught nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown catch and Javonte Williams rushed for a score.
Dallas star CeeDee Lamb had just two receptions for 9 yards before leaving in the second half with a quadriceps injury.
The Buccaneers led by 14 when Sean Tucker was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 8:32 remaining.
The Cowboys then sped 99 yards on 10 plays and Prescott hit Pickens on an 18-yard pass with 5:26 left. The two-point conversion pass failed, leaving Dallas behind by eight.
The Cowboys were driving again when Prescott’s pass bounced off the hands of Jake Ferguson. The ball ricocheted high in the air before Anzalone made a diving grab at the Tampa Bay 12-yard line. The Bucs then ran out the clock.
Dallas cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (illness) was scratched before kickoff.
Tampa Bay needed just two plays to open the third quarter with a touchdown. Irving broke left for a 72-yard gain to the Dallas 14. On the next play, Egbuka headed left on the jet sweep for a 14-yard scamper to give the Buccaneers a 14-10 lead.
Later in the quarter, Prescott’s pass caromed off players from both teams and floated into the air before YaYa Diaby grabbed it at the Tampa Bay 25-yard line for his first career interception.
The Buccaneers moved 75 yards on five plays, including a 64-yard pass from Daniels to Tez Johnson. Irving finished it off with a 1-yard run as Tampa Bay took a 21-10 lead with 7:31 left in the period.
Dallas returner KaVontae Turpin lost the ensuing kickoff when Miles Killebrew poked the ball away. Kevin Knowles recovered it at the Cowboys’ 37 and Tampa Bay cashed in with Chase McLaughlin’s 41-yard field goal for a 14-point lead with 2:58 left in the period.
Dallas held a 10-7 halftime lead after Brandon Aubrey kicked a 41-yard field goal with 21 seconds left in the first half.
The Cowboys opened the game with a nine-play, 70-yard drive and Williams scored from the 1.
Tampa Bay answered by driving 73 yards on 15 plays over 10:58. Irving caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Daniels seven seconds into the second quarter.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS
QB RAIOLA TO START WITH MOORE RULED OUT OF NO. 13 OREGON’S GAME AGAINST NO. 21 UCLA
Quarterback Dante Moore returned to practice with No. 13 Oregon this week but he remains in the concussion protocol and won’t play on Saturday when the Ducks host UCLA.
Moore sustained the concussion in a late hit by linebacker Desman Stephens during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-27 victory over Southern California on Sept. 26. Moore was placed on a stretcher and left the game in an ambulance.
Oregon backup Dylan Raiola took over and threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns against the Trojans.
Raiola will get the nod again for the Ducks (3-1, 1-0 Big 10) on Saturday against the No. 21 Bruins (4-0, 2-0) at Autzen Stadium.
“He had an expectation when he stepped out there on the field and performed at a really, really high level, and everybody had confidence in him because they see him do it a lot in practice,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said about Raiola. “You get a lot of reps in practice, regardless of where you’re sitting.”
Raiola transferred to Oregon after starting two seasons at Nebraska, knowing Moore was likely the starter. He has thrown for 413 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in two appearances this season. Saturday will be his first start for the Ducks.
“It’s totally different systems than what he was running before, so I think you got to build confidence in the system, and that takes time, especially when you ask the quarterback to do as much as we ask the quarterback to do,” Lanning said. “You know, whether it’s checks on plays or just the length of a call, right? It’s a little bit different. There’s a lot of variables in there, and it takes some time to get comfortable with it, even when you’re really cerebral and intelligent like Dylan is.”
UCLA coach Bob Chesney said Moore and Raiola are similar quarterbacks.
“They’re both very, very good football players. You can’t really think one way or the other who’s going to be out there and who’s not,” Chesney said. “We’ve got to prepare for both. But really, the good thing is that it’s not like the second kid can’t throw and is only a runner and has to change everything we’re doing.”
The Ducks have already turned the page from the USC game and everything that came with it, from the worry over Moore’s condition to the joy in the victory, Raiola said.
“Ultimately, the end of the day, our goal is to to win and go 1-0 that week. Very proud of how we fought through the ups and the downs and the moments of that game, we we came out on the other side strong, Raiola said. ”But on the flip side, kind of put that game to bed last week and been preparing because we’ve got got a really, really good football team coming to town.”
While Moore has returned to practice, he was listed on league’s availability report as out for Saturday and still must complete several benchmarks before he can play in a game. But the team was boosted by his return to practice, even if it is in a limited capacity.
“I think the biggest thing is just being able to see a smile on his face to get around and be around his teammates and his brothers and do that at a high level,” Lanning said. “Everybody has a smile on their face getting to see Dante out there with us this week, and it’s been fun seeing him compete.”

GEORGIA AND ALABAMA MEET AGAIN WITH SEC STAKES HIGH AND SEVERE WEATHER LOOMING
The latest edition of the Bulldogs-Crimson Tide rivalry is Saturday night — if the weather holds up.
As No. 2 Georgia heads to No. 6 Alabama for a highly anticipated Southeastern Conference showdown, plenty of questions remain about the status of the game with Hurricane Isaias set to make landfall on Friday night. College football fans — and President Donald Trump, who is set to attend — are left waiting for clarity as contingency plans have yet to be made public.
Both Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer and Georgia’s Kirby Smart emphasized that the conditions are out of their control, and the focus remains on game preparation.
Alabama said Wednesday night that the safety of all parties is the highest priority and that kickoff remains scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
And if kickoff time stands, there is no shortage of things to watch.
Stock up for Stockton
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton is no stranger to Alabama. Saturday marks his third meeting with the Crimson Tide as QB1, and he enters it playing some of the best football of his career.
“We’ve seen Gunner Stockton now a number of times, but he keeps getting better,” DeBoer said Monday.
Stockton is coming off what Smart called his most complete performance of the season, throwing for 295 yards and three touchdowns against Vanderbilt.
Georgia has outscored its opponents by a combined 190 points this season.
Alabama’s defense fared well against Stockton last year, holding him to fewer than 160 passing yards in both outings — something that happened only three times last season.
The Georgia quarterback is 1-1 against Alabama, bouncing back from a regular-season 24-21 loss with a 28-7 SEC championship game victory.
The Dawgs still bring the bite
Georgia’s defense has forced 10 turnovers through five games. The Bulldogs’ plus-6 turnover margin is the second-best in the SEC behind, of course, Alabama.
Raylen Wilson leads Georgia with 27 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles, while Chris Cole has 22 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Cornerback Ellis Robinson IV has three pass breakups and an interception, the latter coming against Vanderbilt last week.
Georgia used the same 11 defensive starters through its first four games before adding lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye and safety Rasean Dinkins against Vanderbilt.
“Disciplined, sound, multiple in what they do,” Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said about Georgia’s defensive unit. “Physical up front, they get vertical, and they do a great job. They’re well-coached. They got good players. They play hard. It’ll be a huge test.”
Not the Bama offense Georgia saw last season
Alabama sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell has impressed in his first year as a starter, leading the Crimson Tide to a 5-0 start while completing 71.2% of passes for 1,414 yards, 11 touchdowns and rushing for 184 yards and four scores.
Ryan Coleman-Williams has emerged as a top target with 20 catches for 376 yards and four touchdowns, while Daniel Hill and Trae’shawn Brown lead the rushing attack.
Alabama is the only FBS team to score at least 45 points in every game this season, outscoring opponents by 144 points.
“Quarterback is playing amazing for them,” Smart said about Russell. “Guy is really talented, fun to watch, and you’ve seen the growth just from the first game all the way through. The talent this guy has is pretty incredible, and they have a great scheme around him.”
Injury report
Georgia will get running back Nate Frazier back after he missed the Oklahoma game and played limited snaps last week. Running back Chauncey Bowens, who took much of the load with Frazier sidelined, is now out according to the SEC’s injury report. Receiver Isiah Canion remains questionable for Georgia.
Despite undergoing surgery for a broken arm on Sunday, DeBoer thinks Alabama tight end Josh Ford could play. Right tackle Jayvin James is not on the initial availability report after missing the Mississippi State game, indicating a possible return. Edge rushers Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu are expected to miss another game.
A history lesson
The SEC championship race has run through Athens or Tuscaloosa for much of the past decade. Either Georgia or Alabama has won 11 of the past 12 conference titles, with a stacked 2019 LSU team being the lone exception.
Saturday is the 76th meeting between the teams and the 13th with both ranked in the top 10. At this point, the stakes are almost routine: The SEC standings and College Football Playoff picture are often altered when Georgia and Alabama meet.

All five of Boston’s goal-scorers — Pastrnak, Morgan Geekie (one goal, two assists), Matthew Poitras (one goal, one assist), Casey Mittelstadt and Mason Lohrei — had entered the game without lighting the lamp this season. Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman made 36 saves, including 17 in the first period alone.
Boston College product Jack McBain scored the lone goal for Utah, which has lost two of its past three.
Avalanche 7, Flames 3
Cale Makar scored twice in a three-point game in his hometown and both Devon Toews and Jaden Schwartz notched a pair of goals to lead visiting Colorado past Calgary.
Nathan MacKinnon scored once and added two assists for the Avalanche, who have won three of four games to start the season. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves to record the win in his 200th career game and Brett Kulak netted two assists.

Golden Knights 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)
Trevor Connelly scored on a backhand shot in the fifth round of a shootout as Vegas rallied from an early three-goal deficit to defeat Toronto in Las Vegas.
It was the first career shootout try for Connelly, a 20-year-old rookie. Jack Eichel scored on a penalty shot and also had an assist and Mark Stone and Brett Howden also scored in regulation for Vegas, which won its third straight game.
Jack Roslovic, Easton Cowan and Nick Paul scored goals for Toronto, which was opening a three-game western road trip. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with a season-high 40 saves while falling to 0-2-1.
Predators 5, Canadiens 2
Ryan O’Reilly scored the go-ahead goal on the power play with 3:16 remaining in the third period, lifting visiting Nashville to a victory over Montreal.
Defenseman Adam Edstrom sealed the win with a pair of empty-net goals for the Predators, who scored five unanswered goals to snap a five-game losing streak to the Canadiens. Alexander Kerfoot and Matthew Wood each scored a goal during the second period and Juuse Saros made 32 saves.
Captain Nick Suzuki and Alex Newhook each scored a goal in the second period for the Canadiens, who have lost three in a row (0-2-1).
Stars 4, Sabres 0

Wyatt Johnston had three assists and Jason Robertson, Sam Steel and Roope Hintz also scored for the Stars. Dallas scored its final three goals in a span of less than six minutes in the second period.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 14 saves for the Sabres, who had won two in a row after dropping their season opener. Buffalo had 18 shots on goal to Dallas’ 26.
Lightning 3, Wild 2
John Carlson scored his first two goals with Tampa Bay, Nikita Kucherov posted two assists and the Lightning finished a sweep of their three-game homestand by edging Minnesota.
Anthony Cirelli added a marker as the Lightning won in the debut of new backup goaltender Dennis Hildeby, who made 34 saves.
Quinn Hughes notched a goal and an assist and Blake Coleman scored on the power play for the Wild, who failed to earn a point for the first time in four outings this season (2-1-1). Jesper Wallstedt stopped 32 shots in his fourth straight start.
Senators 2, Flyers 1
Carter Yakemchuk scored a power-play goal with 6:59 left to lift Ottawa to a victory over struggling Philadelphia.
With the game tied at 1-1, Michael Bunting — playing his first game with Philadelphia — was whistled for hooking. Late in the power play, former Flyers star Claude Giroux set up Yakemchuk’s one-timer from the blue line that got through traffic and past Joseph Woll. Nick Cousins, another former Flyer, scored the other goal for the Senators.
Matvei Michkov tallied the only goal for Philadelphia, which has lost its first five games of the young campaign.
Islanders 4, Blackhawks 1
Bo Horvat opened and closed the scoring for New York, which never trailed in a win over Chicago.
Emil Heineman and Anthony Duclair scored within a three-minute span in the second period for the Islanders, who have split their first four games. New York goalie Ilya Sorokin carried a shutout deep into the third period and finished with 22 saves. Sorokin has allowed just one goal total in two home starts this season.
Frank Nazar spoiled Sorokin’s shutout bid with 2:34 left for the Blackhawks, who have dropped four of their first five games. Arvid Soderblom recorded 15 saves.
Sharks 3, Blues 2 (OT)
Darnell Nurse scored 1:03 into overtime to give San Jose a win at St. Louis.
The Sharks twice equalized in regulation while improving to 3-1-0, with all three victories coming in OT. Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist while Collin Graf also tallied for San Jose. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 24 of 26 shots for the victory in his season debut.
Connor McMichael and Dillon Dube scored for the Blues, who are 0-2-1 since winning their opener. Joel Hofer made 24 saves.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A battle of top-15 teams went the way of top-ranked Nebraska on Thursday (Oct. 8) evening in front of a sold-out crowd at Wilkinson Hall. The Huskers (16-0, 5-0 B1G) worked a sweep (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) of the Indiana volleyball team in Bloomington. It was IU’s first home loss of the season. All of IU’s defeats this year have come to teams in the top 10 of this week’s AVCA poll.
Even against the top-ranked defensive team, IU’s offense came out swinging. The Hoosiers hit .282 (34-10-85), the highest opposing percentage against the nation’s top team this year. In fact, it’s the highest any opponent has hit against the Huskers since October of 2024.
Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema had nine blocks at a .438 hitting percentage. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager, who missed practice all week with illness, added nine kills of her own. Boersema has had eight-or-more kills in six-straight matches. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum provided six kills on the right side
When at its best, slowing down Nebraska’s offense is a difficult task. The Huskers hit at an electric .379 clip with four of its five primary attackers producing at least eight kills. The Hoosiers slowed down opposite hitter Virginia Adriano, holding her to a .067 hitting efficiency. IU’s defense chipped in six total blocks with second-year setter Teodora Krickovic and fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry having a hand in three of them each.
IU will look to respond from tonight’s setback with a showdown against USC on Sunday (Oct. 11) afternoon. Big Ten Network will carry the fourth-straight match of IU’s this season when the Trojans come to town. First serve is set for 2 p.m. from Wilkinson Hall.
How it Happened
• Even with some big blocks along the way, Nebraska’s offense was too much on the night. 11 kills from outside hitter Harper Murray and 17 combined kills out of the middle was enough to see the Huskers by in three sets. Nebraska hit .379 on the night even with six blocks from Indiana.
• IU settled in from the end line after a tough first set with seven errors. Still, 13 errors from the end line to three from Nebraska was a massive difference. IU’s offense hit .282 and found windows to try and close the gap. Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema provided nine kills and hit over .430.
Top Hoosier Performers
#27 Boersema, Ella
9 kills, .438 hitting percentage, 3 digs
#10 Krickovic, Teodora
25 assists, 3 blocks, 4 digs
#24 Jager, Jaidyn
9 kills, 2 digs, 2 blocks
Notes to Know
• Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema had nine kills and hit .438 in Thursday’s contest. Her effort continues a hot streak as of late as she moves back into her natural position in the middle. She’s had at least eight kills in six-straight matches while hitting above .300 in five of those six.
• Over 2,700 people packed into Wilkinson Hall to watch the top-15 showdown. It was the first all top-15 home match in program history and the fourth crowd of 2,700 or better in the gym’s brief history. Indiana Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton was even one of the people in attendance.
• The Hoosiers hit .282 against the top-ranked Huskers and matched a season low in attacking errors (10). It is the best hitting percentage from an opposing team against Nebraska since October of 2024. It’s also the most efficient offensively that IU has been against a top-10 program under head coach Steve Aird.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame got the 2026-27 campaign underway on Thursday night inside Compton Family Ice Arena, opening the year with a 3-1 win over Niagara University to start the season 1-0-0.
Two of the three Nelson brothers found the back of the net in the victory as Henry and Sammy scored the first two goals of the game to help deliver the victory. Paul Fischer added an empty netter in the final minute to get on the score sheet in the first game of the season.
Nicholas Kempf turned in a big performance between the pipes, allowing just one goal while making 24 saves to pick up his first win of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Irish wasted no time getting the offense going, as they scored the opening goal within the first seven minutes of action. Henry Nelson broke down the left lane and fired a shot from the goal line that went off the goaltender and in to put Notre Dame on top early at 1-0.
Later in the first the Irish killed a penalty, allowing just one shot on goal over the two-minute span.
Notre Dame outshot the visitors by a margin of 16-8 over the opening 20 minutes of play and took the one-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Just over halfway through the second period the Irish cashed in on their first power play of the season, as Sammy Nelson picked up the loosed puck off a shot from Evan Werner and carried in front of the crease, getting to his forehand and finishing past the goaltender to double the lead at 2-0 at the 12:52 mark of the period.
The Purple Eagles pulled back within one late in the second period, capitalizing on a powerplay, as Noah Hackett scored off a rebound to trim the Irish lead to 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Notre Dame turned in a very mature performance in the third period, limiting Niagara’s scoring chances. Kempf made a couple of big saves down the final stretch to keep the one-goal lead intact.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The #18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-1-6, 3-1-1) defeated the #14 Virginia Cavaliers (6-3-2, 2-3-0) in a 1-0 battle at Alumni Stadium on Thursday night.
Junior forward Izzy Engle, relentless in her attacking efforts, would put the Irish on the board in the 83rd minute as her game-winning goal secured Notre Dame’s third ACC win this season.
Junior goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica finished with four saves and her third shutout of the season.
Notre Dame’s first chance of the night came from Engle in the 15th minute as the junior forward fired it from just outside the six-yard box to the near post, but was saved by the Cavaliers keeper. Engle would have another shot on goal in the 21st and 22nd minutes, each resulting in a save.
The Irish would have some opportunities on their five corner kicks of the half, but ultimately it would be a scoreless 0-0 heading into halftime.
It was a tenacious effort from the Irish and Cavaliers with Virginia outshooting the Irish 9-7, but Notre Dame would have a 5-4 edge on corner kick opportunities. Kasica recorded three saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
Virginia would have some early looks to start the second half and it wasn’t until the 65th minute that Notre Dame would get another look from Engle. The on-target shot from the six-yard box was saved, and while Lily Joseph tried scoring on the rebound, she would be called for offsides.
It was end-to-end action with both squads looking to get a goal on the board and in the 83rd minute, the Irish would strike first.
On a touch from Ellie Hodsden, Engle was able to run up the midfield in transition as she battled one-on-one with the Virginia goalkeeper for a shot. Engle fired it through the goalkeeper’s legs as they came off of their line in an attempt to make a stop.
With the Irish in front 1-0 with just over seven minutes remaining, Notre Dame kept their foot on the gas as they were looking to extend their lead with three more scoring opportunities. BUTLER VOLLEYBALL
Indianapolis – The Butler Bulldogs were defeated by the Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Bulldogs slide to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST action. The Musketeers improve to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in conference action.
Bulldog Bites
Ava Hunter finished with 15 assists and four digs.
Jersey Loyer registered 12 digs.
Raegan Durbin recorded 11 kills, including six in the third set. She also tallied five digs.
Elise Ward totaled seven kills, including three in both the first and third sets.
Carly Slusser tallied five kills.
On the Record with Head Coach Kyle Shondell
“Xavier came in with an excellent game plan and executed nearly flawlessly. We didn’t generate enough service pressure to slow them down at all. Our ball control cost us in both sides of the ball, and we’ve got a few things we need to lock down before we take the trip to Omaha.”
Set 1 Xavier (25-21)
Butler opened set one with a 4-1 lead in the early moments of the set, sparked by three consecutive aces from Durbin. However, Xavier continued to be aggressive, and the Musketeers took a narrow 15-13 edge over the Bulldogs at the midpoint of the set. Butler battled back late in the set with a 5-1 run behind two kills from Durbin and kills from Slusser and McDonald, but it wasn’t enough, as Xavier claimed set one 25-21.
Set 2 Xavier (25-18)
The Bulldogs began set two trailing the Musketeers, with Xavier jumping out to a 15-8 lead over Butler at the halfway point. The Bulldogs continued to fight and put together a 8-5 run behind two aces and a kill from Slusser, along with kills from McDonald and Durbin. However, it wasn’t enough to fend off the Musketeers, as Xavier closed out set two 25-18.
Set 3 Xavier (25-19)
Xavier jumped out to an early 10-6 lead to open the frame. The Bulldogs traded points back and forth as the set approached the midway mark; however, the Bulldogs still found themselves trailing the Musketeers 15-9. Butler continued to fight in the late moments of the frame; however, it was Xavier who won set three and took overall match victory.
Up Next
Butler will travel to Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton on Friday, Oct. 9 at D.J. Sokol Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. Central). The Bulldogs will be back in action against UConn on Friday, Oct. 16 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL
MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State steps away from Mid-American Conference play this week to travel into Chicago and face Big Ten foe Northwestern. The game marks the Wildcats’ second game at their New Ryan Field, constructed on the site of the original Ryan Field. Northwestern opened the stadium last Friday by defeating Penn State.
** Having played already at Big Ten foe Ohio State, the Cardinals face two Big Ten programs in the same season for the first time since making back-to-back road trips to Purdue (Sept. 18) and Iowa (Sept. 25) in 2010. Ball State faces Northwestern for the first time since 2015 and just the second time in program history. It is the fourth time Ball State has faced a Big Ten opponent since 2021.
** Last week, Ball State led 10-6 just before halftime against MAC rival Toledo, but a safety, a missed field goal and a late Rockets touchdown spelled a 15-10 Toledo lead at halftime. Keldric Luster returned as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback after missing the game at Kent State. He passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns on 21-of-33 passing, but his mobility was limited. Three Ball State receivers had big games: Donovan Hamilton grabbed six passes for 70 yards; Jabari Smith nabbed six for 60 yards and a 33-yard TD; and Jamarion McDougle caught five Luster aerials for 58 yards, including a 37-yard, one-handed highlight-reel catch in the second quarter.
** With Luster hobbled behind center, Ball State employed a tandem QB to start last week’s game against Toledo. Luster took nine snaps and Tyler Mizzell four, as the Cardinals managed a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive to open the game at 7-0. The drive was aided by three Rockets’ penalties and capped by a four-yard pass from Luster to tight end Alex Scherle for his first career touchdown. For the day, Mizzell completed 1 of 2 passes for 14 yards, and ran three times for 18 yards.
** One week after the Cardinals allowed 354 yards in total offense to Kent State, Ball State allowed 352 rushing yards to Toledo. Those aren’t numbers for boasting, but specifically against Toledo, the Cardinals were effective in the Red Zone, twice limiting the Rockets to field goals, and on two other occasions stopping Toledo on fourth down.
WHAT A WIN MEANS:
** Ball State will win on the road for the first time in the Mike Uremovich Era. It would mark the Cardinals’ first road win since Oct. 12, 2024 at Kent State (37-35). Uremovich has begun his tenure at Ball State with 12 of his first 19 games on the road (7 in 2025; first 5 in 2026).
** The Cardinals will defeat a Big Ten opponent for the first time since a 41-39 thriller at Indiana on Sept. 15, 2012.
BY THE NUMBERS
12 – Ball State has played 12 of 18 schools in the B1G — all except Maryland, Michigan State, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
13 – Quentavius Scandrett’s 13 tackles vs. Toledo were the most by a Cardinal (without OT) since Cole Pearce had 15 stops vs. EMU in 2022.
66 – TJ Horton’s 66-yard TD run vs. Toledo was Ball State’s longest run from scrimmage this year, and his his fourth touchdown of the season.
13-150 – Donovan Hamilton has had 13 catches for 150 yards over the past two weeks. His 80 receiving yards at Kent State were a career high.

Curry Kendall led the way for the Blue and White with six aces, a mark which ranks in the top 10 for a single match in program history, while Avery Hales, Kira Holland and Corinne Knapp tallied two aces each in the win.
Saturday’s match at Murray State marked the third time this season that the Trees had at least three players record multiple aces in the same match (Missouri State, Milwaukee), while the 12 service aces were the most in a match for the Sycamores since recording 13 aces against Merrimack on September 6, 2025.
Can You Dig It?
Indiana State senior Macy Lengacher stepped into the familiar role of being the Sycamores’ primary libero during the Blue and White’s recent road trip to Belmont and Murray State, and the veteran defensive specialist responded by averaging 4.50 digs per set across the two matches with the Bruins and Racers.
Lengacher tallied her fourth career 20-dig match in the opener of the current three-match road trip, with her 22 digs at Belmont also being the most by a Sycamore in a match this season. She also added 14 digs in Indiana State’s comeback win over Murray State, with the first two matches of the current three-match road trip producing her two highest dig totals of the season.
Heavy Hitters
Indiana State had a pair of athletes set or match career highs in kills during its five-set win over Murray State, as Corinne Knapp notched 21 kills against the Racers while Curry Kendall tallied 19 in the Sycamores’ comeback victory. Knapp had never recorded more than 13 kills in a match prior to Saturday’s showing, where she also hit .316 (21-9-38), as the Sycamore sophomore became the first person on the team with a 20-kill match this season. Nearly half of Knapp’s damage came when it mattered most, as she hit .643 (10-1-14) over the last two sets.
Kendall produced one of the best all-around stat lines by a Sycamore this season with 19 kills, 13 digs, six aces and three blocks in the win. Kendall’s 19 kills matched her season high, which she previously set against Stonehill, and marked the fourth 19-kill match of her career. Her 13 digs were a season high, while the six aces were a career high and also ranked in the top 10 in program history for a single match. Similar to Knapp, Kendall also played a pivotal role down the stretch for the Sycamores with a .600 hitting percentage (10-1-15) across sets four and five.
Call It A Comeback
Indiana State’s first conference win of the 2026 season came in comeback fashion, as the Sycamores rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Murray State in five sets on the road. The Sycamores limited Murray State to a .125 hitting percentage (10-5-40) in the fourth set and came out firing with a .348 hitting percentage (11-3-23) in the fifth set.
The Sycamores are no strangers to comeback wins in five sets this season, with three of their four five-set wins coming after facing a 2-1 deficit. Included in that figure is the Sycamores’ reverse sweep over Columbia at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational. Longer matches have favored the Sycamores this season, with Indiana State sporting a 6-4 record across four and five-set matches.

Evansville held strong through the middle portion of the set going in front 16-13 when Carsyn Kelley and Savannah Gogel registered a block.
Just as they had in the first set, Valparaiso fought back once again. After tying the score at 17, the Beacons wrestled away a 22-19 advantage. Efficient serving by Kendall Agler anchored a 5-0 run that gave the Aces a 24-22 edge. SOUTHERN INDIANA SWIMMING
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Swimming and Diving opens the 2026-27 season on the road this weekend with a pair of dual meets, starting Friday against host Valparaiso University before a Saturday trip to Chicago for a double-dual against the University of Illinois-Chicago and the University of Northern Iowa.
Friday’s meet against Valparaiso at Hobart Aquatic Center in Hobart, Indiana, will start at 5 p.m. CT. Friday’s meet will be a swimming-only event, with no diving contested.
Saturday’s double-dual against UIC and UNI meet in Chicago is set for an 11 a.m. CT. UNI will face USI in women’s competition only, as Northern Iowa only sponsors a women’s swimming and diving program.
USI enters the season opener looking to build on last year’s Summit League Championships, where both the men’s and women’s teams finished sixth out of seven teams.
USI and Valparaiso have met regularly in recent seasons. The USI women hold a 3-2 all-time edge in the series, while the USI men trail 3-2. Both USI squads fell to Valparaiso at the Indiana University Indianapolis Quad Meet last season. Junior Stokes Knight took first in the 50 freestyle (20.77) for the men, and junior Emma Gabhart finished with a trio of second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 400 IM for the women.
The Screaming Eagle men are 1-2 all-time against the Flames and picked up their first win in the series at home last season. The USI women have yet to beat UIC, sitting 0-3 all-time in the series. In last year’s meet versus UIC, sophomore Jerrin Dale picked up three wins, taking the 50 and 100 breaststroke and swimming the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay. Gabhart once again led the charge for the USI women with wins in the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
The USI divers faced UIC in last year’s dual meet, as well as the UIC diving invite in Chicago. Junior Gabbie Meier was USI’s top finisher in the invite, placing third in the three-meter diving. Senior’s Nathan Deputy and Maranda Uttke each placed sixth in the three-meter.
Saturday’s meet will also mark the first-ever meeting between USI and Northern Iowa on the women’s side.

SOUTHERN INDIANA MEN’S SOCCER
HOUSTON – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer opened its road swing in Texas with a 1-1 draw against Houston Christian University Thursday night.
USI (1-6-4, 1-2-1 OVC) secured a point in Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday after scoring first on a connection by the Murphy brothers, and then Houston Christian (3-4-4, 1-0-2 OVC) later answered with an equalizer.
Sophomore midfielder Jimmy Murphy put the Screaming Eagles ahead with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Midfielder Tony Murphy assisted on his twin brother’s goal, marking it the first time the two have combined for a goal this season.
The Huskies pressured USI early, taking eight shots compared to USI’s one in the first 29 minutes. The Screaming Eagles’ defense held strong, with senior goalkeeper Kael McGowan recording three saves during that span. In the 36th minute, Tony Murphy connected with his twin brother, Jimmy, who found the back of the net to give the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 lead. McGowan added one final save to keep USI ahead by one going into halftime.
In the second half, HCU found the equalizer in the 60th minute. From there, it was a stalemate, with both teams firing seven shots over the next 27 minutes. The Huskies had one final opportunity off a corner kick, but McGowan gathered the ball to preserve the 1-1 draw.
USI will wrap up its Texas road trip on Sunday with a stop at University of the Incarnate Word. Sunday’s match will begin at 1 p.m.
Team coverage for Sunday’s match will be available on X (@USIMSOC) and Instagram (@usi_msoc). Live stats and ESPN+ coverage can be accessed at USIScreamingEagles.com.

SOUTHERN INDIANA VOLLEYBALL
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball returns from its bye week to host Morehead State University in the 2026 Ohio Valley Conference home opener on Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s match will be played at 6 p.m. and streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription. Saturday’s 2 p.m. match is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support. Admission to both matches and all USI Volleyball home games this season will be free, courtesy of ProRehab.
The Screaming Eagles are coming off their bye week after opening conference play on the road on September 25 and 26 at Eastern Illinois University. USI split the series with the Panthers, winning the second game of the weekend in five-set thrillers.
Senior Ashby Willis earned her third weekly OVC award for her performance at EIU, as she tallied 39 kills for 4.33/set, hitting a .276 efficiency. Along with her 28 digs (3.11/set) and seven blocks in the series, Willis has posed herself as a consistent all-around threat.
Sophomore Aysa Thomas earned her third Setter of the Week honor for her performance at EIU, tallying 97 assists for 10.78 per set. Thomas also recorded 24 digs, 12 kills, seven blocks, and three aces.
Scouting Morehead State:
With an overall record of 6-8 and 2-2 in conference play, MSU sits at third in league standings so far in the 2026 season. In the opening weekend of conference play, the Eagles got swept (3-0, 3-0) by conference leader Lindenwood at home in Morehead. MSU bounced back in the second weekend of OVC play, defeating UT Martin on the road in two four-set wins. Morehead State leads the series history between the two programs 9-1, with their most recent win coming from the 2025 OVC Tournament semifinals, where they beat USI in four sets.
MSU’s Hollan Everett leads the conference in kills per set with 4.06 and is the reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to two wins over UTM with 5.6 kills/set and tallying 24 kills in the series finale. Opposite of Everett is freshman outside hitter and reigning rookie of the week Ella Warwick, who tallied 25 kills and 23 digs in the UTM series.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL
The Valpo volleyball team emerged victorious in two of a tight first three sets against Evansville Thursday night at the ARC, and the Beacons then enjoyed a much less stressful route to victory in the clinching set as they closed out a 3-1 (25-22, 30-32, 27-25, 25-14) win. Jordyn Gove (Amarillo, Texas/Randall) surpassed her career best with 24 kills, one of many career highs to be found Thursday, while Valpo once again posted one of its most prolific team performances on the serve in the 25-point era.
How It Happened
Valpo was staring a 22-17 deficit in the face late in set one, but needed just five points to tie things up, rattling off five in a row — including kills from Gove and Sarah Pippin (Niles, Mich./Edwardsburg) and a Keira Lucas (Brazil, Ind./Northview) service ace — to level the set at 22-22.
A Beacon error briefly returned the lead to the Purple Aces before Jessica Pickett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) again tied the set with a kill. An Evansville error gave Valpo set point, and Mara Thomas (Bogart, Ga./Athens Academy) came through with a service ace to complete the comeback and take the opener.
The sides were flipped late in set two, as it was the Beacons with a late 22-19 lead before the Aces reeled off five points in a row to earn set point at 24-22.
Incredibly, Valpo held off seven consecutive UE set points to extend the frame. Finally, a block by Pickett and Ava Helming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) gave the Beacons their first set point opportunity at 30-29, but the Aces scored the final three points of the set to even the match at one set apiece.
Valpo held a 19-15 advantage nearing the late stages of the third set before a 5-1 spurt from Evansville tied the set at 20-20.
Much like the previous set, the two sides put together a streak of consecutive sideouts — this one a streak of 11 straight sideouts which included three set points for the Beacons that the Aces thwarted. On their fourth set point chance, however, Gove posted a kill — her 10th of that set — to make it 2-1 Beacons for the match.
After the drama of the first three sets, the fourth set proved to be much easier for Valpo to come out on top. The Beacons jumped out to an 8-3 lead to force an Evansville timeout and extended that advantage to 14-4 before cruising home, as the Aces got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Inside the Match
Career highs were all over the Beacons’ side of the box score Thursday evening, starting with a pair in the kills column. Gove racked up a match-best 24 kills to better her previous high of 22 kills.
Gove, who was just one kill away from cracking the program’s single-match top-five chart for a four-set match in the 25-point era, reached 20 kills for the fifth time this season.
Gove racked up 10 of her kills in the third set alone, becoming the first Valpo player since Jillie Grant at Drake March 1, 2021 to record a double-figure kill total in a single set and making her just the fourth Valpo player to accomplish the feat since joining the Valley.
Pippin added 50% to her career high in the kills department, posting nine kills.
Mia McCall (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) edged past her best effort with 27 assists, while Lucas doubled her career high in that category with 10 assists.
After entering the match with just nine career service aces across nine different matches, Helming recorded five in Thursday’s win — tied for second-most in a four-set match in the 25-point era by a Valpo player and tied for third-most in the 25-point era in any length match.
Helming’s five aces led the way as the Beacons finished the match with 12 service aces, the fourth time this year they’ve registered double digits in that department. It is the third-most aces by a Valpo team in a four-set match in the 25-point era.
Two more career highs can be found in the digs column, as Lucas raced past her previous best of 14 digs with a match-high 23 digs and McCall hit double digits for the first time in her career with 10 digs.
Incredibly, five different Beacons finished Thursday’s win with double-doubles. Gove (24 kills/11 digs) and Helming (13 kills/12 digs) did it with kills and digs, while McCall (27 assists/10 digs), Thomas (21 assists/18 digs) and Lucas (10 assists/23 digs) did it with assists and digs.
Pickett finished with double-digit kills for the third time this season with 10 kills and led the Beacons with four blocks.
Freshman Kyla Bellich (Thomson, Ill./Prince of Peace Catholic) made her collegiate debut Thursday, joining the Beacons’ rotation in the middle in the final two sets and recording two blocks and a kill.
Valpo finished the win with a 64-49 advantage in kills over the Purple Aces and hit at a .218 clip to Evansville’s .136 clip.
Thanks in large part to the multitude of set point opportunities that were saved in the middle two sets, Thursday’s contest featured 36 ties and 13 lead changes.
The match was the first regular season match at the ARC on a Thursday night since Valpo opened the Popcorn Classic on a Thursday evening in 2007 against Marshall. It was the first Thursday night match at the ARC overall since the Beacons swept Butler to open the 2021 NIVC.
Next Up
Valpo (10-7, 2-3 MVC) goes for a perfect week Friday evening at 6 p.m. against Murray State. It will be a Gold Out at the ARC, as the program and the athletic department celebrate the life and legacy of Justin Hunt.

VALPO WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Valparaiso University tennis team began play at the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Ill. this weekend. Alexandra Popa (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) picked up a victory in the consolation singles draw on Thursday.
How It Happened
In the first round of singles qualifying, Popa and Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) both played against Big Ten adversaries from Northwestern on Thursday. Popa’s match was particularly tight, as Mika Dagan Fruchtman eked out a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
After dropping challenging matches, both players turned around to play in the consolation draw. Popa bounced back to beat Western Michigan’s Julia Frazier 7-5, 6-2. Delgado faced off with a conference foe, Illinois State’s Emma Peretti, and battled back to force a third-set tiebreak only to drop a close breaker as Peretti took the match 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Junior Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) was placed directly in the main draw, where she will face Illinois’ Tess Bucher on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Doubles action also gets underway on Friday as Popa and Cathy Beckmann (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) clash with the UIC tandem of Dongke Liu and Kristina Tai at 9 a.m. In addition, Tanner and Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) will face off with an Eastern Michigan pair to begin their doubles quest at 11 a.m.
Inside the Matches
Popa picked up her third singles win of the fall and the 11th of her collegiate career.
Popa’s tight first-round match came against Dagan Fruchtman, who was a 20-match winner in singles and a top-100 player in doubles last season. Delgado played Marelie Raath, another top-100 doubles player from a year ago who enjoyed a 20-win singles campaign.
Thoughts from Head Coach James Gleghorn
“We had solid performances against seeded players in the first round of the qualifying. Popa played well and almost pulled off the upset against Northwestern!”
“We headed right back on the court for a second match, and Andrea lost a heartbreaker in the third set super tiebreaker. She played with a lot of heart today!”
“Alexandra came out a little shaky in her match against Western Michigan, but by the middle of the first set, she started to dominate play, and after closing out the first set 7–5 she rolled in the second set 6-2. It was a solid win for Popa and it’s going to create some momentum for tomorrow’s doubles.”
“Really looking forward to seeing how our number one and two doubles teams play in the main draw tomorrow morning. We have been playing really well in practice and I hope it pays off in the matches.”

The Regional continues on Friday. Links to live scoring and video are available on ValpoAthletics.com.

GAME 7
vs. Missouri S&T Miners (0-5, 0-3 GLVC)
Homecoming 2026
Saturday // October 10 // 6 p.m.
UIndy football headlines Homecoming Week 2026 with a GLVC clash against the Miners of Missouri S&T. UIndy is 16-2 in Homecoming games since 2006, including a perfect 12-0 mark versus GLVC opponents. UIndy’s lone Homecoming matchup with the Miners came on a rain-soaked October evening in 2013 and ended in a 34-3 Greyhound victory. Visit the UIndy Homecoming homepage to see all related activities going on this week.
UIndy owns a 12-1 record versus S&T all-time, including a 56-13 road win last season. The current Miners are still in search of their first win of the season, just missing it in a 39-37 double-overtime loss at Upper Iowa last week.
Nevertheless, Missouri S&T sports an effective running attack, ranking second in the GLVC at 182 yards per game. Senior running back and former Iowa State Cyclone Al Harris spearheads the ground game, averaging more than five yards per carry and topping the league with eight rushing TDs.
