MLB ROUNDUP: GUARDIANS EARN TWO WALK-OFF WINS IN DH SWEEP OF TIGERS
Brayan Rocchio hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Cleveland Guardians a come-from-behind 7-6 win over visiting the Detroit Tigers in the first half of a day-night doubleheader on Friday.
Rocchio belted a grand slam in the fourth inning off Keider Montero, then went deep against Drew Sommers (1-4) as the Guardians overcame a 6-1 deficit.
Cade Smith (4-1) pitched the ninth for the win, joining Craig Yoho and Erik Sabrowski in tossing a combined four scoreless innings.
Max Clark had three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers, and Spencer Torkelson homered and singled. Montero worked four innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.
Guardians 4, Tigers 3 (Game 2, 10 innings)
Travis Bazzana singled home Brayan Rocchio with two outs in the 10th inning, giving Cleveland its second walk-off win of the day over Detroit.
Hunter Gaddis (3-3) pitched two perfect innings for the Guardians, who had lost four of six entering the day. Bazzana hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the eighth inning as Cleveland overcame a 3-0 deficit.
Kevin McGonigle had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who fell for the 16th time in 20 games. Kenley Jansen (4-6) took the loss.
Dodgers 5, Nationals 3
Blake Snell delivered six scoreless innings, Kyle Tucker contributed a home run and Los Angeles topped visiting Washington.
Teoscar Hernandez had a two-run double, one game after hitting a two-run game-ending double. The Dodgers won their second consecutive game without Shohei Ohtani, who is dealing with a sore knee, biceps and neck. Snell (3-1) gave up five hits and struck out seven.
James Wood had two doubles and drove in a run for the Nationals, who lost their second consecutive game after winning five of six.
Brewers 10, Reds 7
Rookie Cooper Pratt ripped a bases-clearing triple and scored on a wild pitch during a five-run fifth inning, lifting Milwaukee past host Cincinnati.
David Hamilton had an RBI triple and William Contreras added a run-scoring double for the Brewers, who own the majors’ best record and have won seven of their last 10 games.
Entering the box to his new walk-up song, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA,” Venezuela-born Eugenio Suarez belted a three-run homer for the Reds in his return from a two-game absence in order to take the U.S. naturalization test.
Braves 5, Phillies 2
Chris Sale outdueled Cristopher Sanchez in a battle of aces and Mauricio Dubon hit a late two-run homer as visiting Atlanta topped Philadelphia in a matchup of the National League East’s top two teams.
Sale (14-9) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. Sanchez (16-5) also tossed six innings, giving up three runs on five hits.
Ronald Acuna Jr. had an RBI single as part of a 3-for-5 night for the Braves, who earned their ninth win in 11 games. Alec Bohm produced a solo homer and an RBI double for the Phillies, who took their second straight loss. Bryce Harper had his career-high on-base streak end at 35 games.
White Sox 4, Twins 1
Colson Montgomery hit a two-run homer — one of three Chicago long balls — and the White Sox ended a two-game skid with a win over visiting Minnesota.
Miguel Vargas and Braden Montgomery each hit solo homers for the White Sox, while Tristan Peters collected two hits. Erick Fedde (8-8) defeated the Twins for the second time in less than a week, tossing five shutout innings.
Josh Bell went 2-for-3 and homered to plate Minnesota’s lone run. Kody Clemens finished 3-for-4 for the Twins, who have dropped back-to-back games after winning three in a row.
Pirates 1, Angels 0
Jared Jones matched his season high with nine strikeouts over six three-hit innings and Jake Mangum had an RBI double to lead Pittsburgh past visiting Los Angeles.
Bryan Reynolds had two hits for the Pirates, who won for the fifth time in the past six games. Konnor Griffin, activated off the 60-day injured list after missing 49 games with a finger injury, scored the lone run of the contest in the second inning.
Jones (3-6) walked one while snapping a seven-start winless drought, throwing a season-high 91 pitches, 63 for strikes. Angels starter Ryan Johnson (3-8) gave up one run on four hits in six innings.
Cubs 6, Marlins 1
Shota Imanaga outdueled Janson Junk to lead Chicago past host Miami as the Cubs won their second straight game and took over the top spot in the National League wild-card standings.
Imanaga (9-10) allowed one run on three hits over six-plus innings. Aaron Civale followed with three scoreless innings of one-hit ball to log his second save. Michael Busch homered, and Nico Hoerner had three hits and an RBI.
Junk (6-9) tossed five innings, giving up three hits and one run. Griffin Conine had half of the Marlins’ four hits and scored their lone run.
Red Sox 1, Orioles 0
Ranger Suarez fired seven sharp innings and Mickey Gasper homered in the first, lifting Boston to a victory at Baltimore.
Suarez (6-4) limited the Orioles to five hits and one walk while striking out three across a 91-pitch effort. Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman (32nd save) each pitched an inning in relief to complete the shutout.
Shane Baz (5-15) lasted 6 1/3 innings, yielding one run on four hits as the Orioles lost their fourth in a row. Blaze Alexander registered three of Baltimore’s six hits, which were all singles.
Mets 10, Giants 6
Nolan McLean worked through six innings and won his third straight decision as host New York beat San Francisco.
Mark Vientos hit a three-run homer in the first to give the Mets a lead they never relinquished. Francisco Alvarez went deep twice while Bo Bichette and Francisco Lindor each had two-run homers to back McLean (11-8), who allowed two runs on six hits.
Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double and a three-run homer for the Giants, who have dropped three of four. Turner Hill finished 2-for-4 with a run-scoring single. Rookie Matt Wilkinson (0-3) yielded seven runs (four earned) in three innings.
Astros 3, Diamondbacks 1
Yainer Diaz homered, Cristian Javier matched his season high in strikeouts and Houston defeated visiting Arizona.
Javier (2-5) allowed one run on one hit with eight strikeouts in five innings as the Astros won for the seventh time in nine games. Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth for his 23rd save, making him the 41st player in history to record 250 career saves.
The Diamondbacks took their fourth loss in five games as Merrill Kelly (9-13) worked six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Gabriel Moreno hit a solo homer.
Blue Jays 9, Royals 2
Alejandro Kirk and Ernie Clement had two hits and a pair of RBIs apiece to help visiting Toronto post a victory over Kansas City.
After Blue Jays starter Jameson Taillon exited with elbow discomfort following two innings, four relievers combined to throw seven innings of one-run ball. George Springer also drove in two for the Blue Jays, who won their sixth game in seven tries.
Daniel Lynch IV (4-5) allowed five runs on seven hits across five innings for the Royals, who have lost four of their last five. Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino bookended the loss with solo homers for Kansas City.
Cardinals 7, Rockies 6
Ivan Herrera hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, and St. Louis rallied to beat Colorado in Denver.
The Cardinals trailed 6-4 when Thomas Saggese drew a leadoff walk from Jordan Romano (0-3) and stole second before Jose Fermin reached on a throwing error. Herrera hit a 1-2 slider 430 feet to center.
Cade Winquest (1-0) earned his first major league win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Riley O’Brien got the final three outs for his 36th save. Cole Carrigg hit an inside-the-park home run and tripled while TJ Rumfield also went deep, tripled and singled for Colorado.
Padres 3, Yankees 2 (10 innings)
Luis Campusano belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving San Diego a win over visiting New York.
Facing Paul Blackburn (7-3), Campusano belted a first-pitch sinker an estimated 394 feet to left field. Mason Miller (5-2) pitched two innings to earn the win despite allowing Spencer Jones’ RBI single in the top of the 10th that gave New York a short-lived 2-1 edge.
Max Fried threw 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball for the Yankees, who had won four of their previous five games. Ben Rice hit a solo homer among his three hits.
Athletics 7, Mariners 6
Max Muncy, Alika Williams, Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof homered in a five-run third inning and the Athletics held on for a victory at Seattle.
Brady Basso (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings of relief as the A’s won their third consecutive game. Hogan Harris worked the ninth for his 15th save.
Cal Raleigh homered for the Mariners, who have dropped seven of the past nine. Logan Gilbert (11-9) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings, including all four homers, though he struck out 10.
