NO. 22 ARIZONA ESCAPES TCU WITH FG IN FINAL MINUTE
Michael Salgado-Medina kicked a 37-yard field goal with 38 seconds left to lead No. 22 Arizona to a 29-28 win over TCU on Friday night in a Big 12 Conference game in Tucson, Ariz.
The Wildcats (7-2, 4-2) trailed by eight with 1:45 to go before getting a 15-yard touchdown pass from Noah Fifita to Quincy Craig, then after a failed 2-point conversion, Zuri Watson recovered a pooched onside kick. After three run plays, Salgado-Medina hit the game-winner, then Tyrese Boss sealed the win with an interception with 29 seconds remaining.
Fifita threw for 313 yards and two TDs and also ran for a score, while Giovanni Richardson had 11 catches for 171 yards for Arizona, which won its seventh straight at home for its longest home win streak since 1993-94.
Jaden Craig ran for two touchdowns and threw for another for TCU, going 28 of 41 for 232 yards. Kari Ashley had 14 catches for 95 yards and Jordan Dwyer added nine catches for 86 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs (4-5, 2-4).
Down 14-10 at halftime, Arizona retook the lead on a 9-yard TD run by Fifita that came after Tre Smith blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt by TCU’s Kyle Lemmermann. The Horned Frogs went back ahead 21-17 late in the third quarter on a6-yard TD catch by Dwyer.
The Wildcats cut it to one on a 23-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter, but TCU extended it to 28-20 on a 2-yard Craig run with 6:35 to go.
Arizona scored on its first two possessions, a 20-yard TD catch by Isaiah Mizell and a 43-yard field. TCU’s first chance at points came early in the second quarter but Lemmermann was wide right from 37 yards out.
Craig scored on a 7-yard run to get the Frogs on the board with 8:53 left before halftime, then Hudson Hooper returned an interception 93 yards to put TCU up 14-10 with 4:09 left in the half.

NFL
WEEK 9 NFL CAPSULES
Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) vs. Atlanta Falcons (3-5) in Madrid
Sunday, 9:30 a.m.
FanDuel odds: Bengals -3, Total 52.5
Series rewind: Cincinnati has won the last three meetings, including a 35-17 victory at home in the most recent clash on Oct. 23, 2022. The Falcons are 1-3 in international games and the Bengals are 0-1-1.
The NFL’s second game in Spain could see some fireworks as Bengals star Joe Burrow seeks to become the fourth QB in league history to throw four or more touchdown passes in four consecutive games (Peyton Manning, Dan Marino and Tom Brady are the others). His favorite target, Ja’Marr Chase, needs one TD reception to join Randy Moss as the only players in NFL history with at least seven TD grabs in each of their first six seasons. Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson can also carve a place in the record book by becoming the fifth player with 35 games of 100-plus scrimmage yards at age 25 or younger (Clinton Portis, Ezekiel Elliott, Edgerrin James and Emmitt Smith are the others). Atlanta wide receiver Drake London has an international name and an international game, having tallied 104 yards and a TD against the Colts last year in Berlin. Cincinnati is on a three-game winning streak while Atlanta is coming off a turnover-filled 16-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Only the winless Los Angeles Chargers (17) have more giveaways than the Falcons (16).
Detroit Lions (5-2) at Miami Dolphins (1-6)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Lions -7, Total 50.5
Series rewind: The Lions have won three of the past four meetings, but Miami won the most recent tussle between these teams in October 2022. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 382 yards and completed 12 passes to Tyreek Hill in the 31-27 win, which bumped Miami to 5-3 and dropped the Lions to 1-6.
The Lions picked up more than 40 degrees on their trek from Detroit to South Beach, where head coach Dan Campbell isn’t afraid to make the game a run-heavy, physical confrontation. Led by Jared Goff, who continues to be one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league (168 of 248 for 1,964 yards, 15 touchdowns and one interception), the Lions will try to exploit a Dolphins defense that ranks 24th in points allowed per game (25.9) and 25th in yards allowed per play (5.7). Jahmyr Gibbs remains one of the NFL’s top backs, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and 110.4 rushing yards per game. Miami has struggled in the passing game, on both sides of the ball. Opposing quarterbacks have combined for an NFL-high 119.5 passer rating against the Dolphins, while Miami quarterback Malik Willis owns a 79.7 rating through seven games. The Lions rank last in the league in passing yards allowed per game, which could create an opportunity for Willis to have success. Miami has found consistency on the ground behind Ollie Gordon II, who has rushed for 408 yards and four touchdowns and helped offset some of the Dolphins’ offensive struggles.
Los Angeles Rams (4-4) at Washington Commanders (2-4-1)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Rams -4.5, Total 47.5
Series rewind: The Rams have won the past two meetings but trail the overall series 24-13-1. The last meeting was in 2023.
Washington seeks consecutive wins for the first time since a four-game run to close the 2024 season. The Commanders are two games behind the NFC East-leading New York Giants (4-2-1), who host the Commanders on Nov. 12. The Rams have won two in a row, including a 24-9 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers last week. The Rams are tied with the Seattle Seahawks for second in the NFC West behind the San Francisco 49ers (6-1). Los Angeles All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett practiced this week and is pushing to return. Matthew Stafford passed for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Chargers in Week 8. The Rams boast the NFL’s fourth-ranked offense (384.4 yards per game). The Commanders are 20th (327.1). Washington’s Jayden Daniels has yet to throw an interception this season in five games. Last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, he completed 16 of 29 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown to Stefon Diggs. Washington scored 27 unanswered points in a 27-10 home victory.
New York Giants (4-2-1) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (2-6)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Giants -3, Total 38.5
Series rewind: The Giants have lost 13 consecutive games in Philadelphia, with their last win at Lincoln Financial Field coming on Oct. 27, 2013. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni is 8-3 against New York, including the postseason.
The script has officially flipped in the NFC East, where the first-place Giants visit the last-place Eagles. And no one could have predicted this quarterback matchup two months ago: J.J. McCarthy makes his second start for New York while Joe Milton III will make his first NFL start for Philadelphia. The Eagles rank 32nd in total offense (265.3 yards per game) and 30th in scoring (17.1 points per game). They have not gained more than 341 yards or scored more than 24 points in any game this season. They face a Giants defense that ranks third against the pass (184.9 yards per game). Both teams have struggled to generate a pass rush, as their combined 19 sacks (Philadelphia with 10, New York with nine) are fewer than 12 teams entering Week 9. There are hamstring injuries worth watching on both offenses: Giants running back Cam Skattebo, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith all missed practices to start the week. Smith hasn’t been on the field since Week 6.
Denver Broncos (6-2) vs. Carolina Panthers (3-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Broncos -2.5, Total 43.5
Series rewind: The Broncos hold a 7-2 lead in the all-time series, including a 24-10 victory in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif. The Panthers posted a 23-10 victory the last time they met in Charlotte on Nov. 27, 2022.
In this clash of division leaders, Carolina doesn’t want to get into a close game with Denver. The Broncos have won 15 straight regular-season games that have been decided by one score, matching the 2008-09 Colts for the longest streak in NFL history. Since 1970, no quarterback has led more game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in his first three seasons than Denver’s Bo Nix, who did it for the 15th time last week to beat the Chiefs. Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton leads the league with 101 tackles and is one of only two players since 2000 to reach triple digits in his team’s first eight games (Zaire Franklin of the Colts in 2023 was the other). Carolina quarterback Bryce Young has thrown at least one TD pass in nine straight games. Since catching 14 passes for 192 yards and two TDs in the Panthers’ Week 4 win against Detroit, reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan has a combined 16 receptions for 184 yards and no scores in his last three games.
Dallas Cowboys (3-5) at Indianapolis Colts (2-6)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Cowboys -5.5, Total 51.5
Series rewind: Dallas leads the series 11-7 and has won four of the last five games against Indianapolis, including a 54-19 home trouncing the last time they played in 2022.
Not much has gone right in the first half of the season for the Colts, who will carry the burden of a four-game losing streak and the weight of roster roulette when they face Dallas. Before their 42-7 loss last week at Jacksonville, Indianapolis traded All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. After the loss, Indianapolis reportedly rejected at least one offer for running back Jonathan Taylor, who is fourth in the NFL in carries (148), tied for third in rushing touchdowns (eight) and eighth in rushing yards (610) and continues to be used in a feature role even with his future with the Colts uncertain. Indianapolis has been outscored by 61 points and ranks last in the NFL in turnover margin (minus-11). Last week, the Cowboys blew a 17-3 second-half lead at home and handed the Cardinals a 33-30 overtime win. While Dallas has lost three of its last four games, it is only one game back in the win column for the NFC East lead. The Cowboys have scored 30 points five times this season but are only 3-2 in those games. They’re 1-11 under second-year coach Brian Schottenheimer when they don’t score 30 points in a game.
Cleveland Browns (5-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-5)
Sunday, 1 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Saints -3, Total 43.5
Series rewind: The Browns lead the all-time series 13-7 but New Orleans has won the last three matchups to narrow the gap.
Deshaun Watson has already led five game-winning drives in the fourth quarter and overtime, a major reason for Cleveland’s surprise success in the first half of the season. But the Browns must go without their starting QB this week after he entered concussion protocol. Shedeur Sanders takes over for at least Week 9. Sanders, a fifth-round draft pick last year, started seven games as a rookie, going 3-4 while completing 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He will need to get the offense off to a stronger start; Cleveland has been outscored 65-13 in the first quarter this season. That has also been a problem for the Saints, who have been outscored 44-6 in the first quarter. New Orleans is coming off a bye during which head coach Kellen Moore fired run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti. The Saints rank 28th in the NFL in rushing offense (86.0 yards per game), and they had just 18 yards on 17 rushes in their last game, a 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 25 in Paris. That has made things hard on QB Tyler Shough, who has still managed to throw for 1,721 yards, 13 TDs and six interceptions in seven games. The INTs match his total as a rookie last season.
Houston Texans (2-5) at Los Angeles Chargers (0-7)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Texans -3.5, Total 39.5
Series rewind: Houston has won three of the past four meetings in the regular season, including 20-16 at Los Angeles last season.
The Chargers began this season with dreams of playing in a home-stadium Super Bowl in Inglewood, Calif.; then they went 0-for-September and October. The lone winless team in the NFL is off to the worst start in franchise history. Houston stumbled out of the starting blocks for the second consecutive season. It appeared to be finding its way last month while giving vibes of the team’s nine-game winning streak to close last season, but its bid for a third consecutive victory was thwarted in a 27-21 overtime loss to the New York Giants on Oct. 25. After C.J. Stroud threw for a season-low 153 yards against New York, the team spent its bye week trying to figure out ways to get better balance. The season-low effort came one week after Stroud was named AFC Player of the Week for his 312-yard, three-touchdown performance in a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Stroud has the offense seventh in the NFL in passing with 253.4 yards per game. Houston’s ground game ranks 29th with an average of 84.7 rushing yards. There is no deeper hole than the one where the Chargers are buried. Their defense looked up to the task last Sunday by not allowing a first down over the Los Angeles Rams’ first five drives of the game. Quarterback Justin Herbert had a season-high 257 yards passing in the defeat, but his two interceptions gave him 10 on the season, most in the NFL. Two years ago, Herbert threw just three picks while starting all 17 games.
New York Jets (2-6) at Kansas City Chiefs (5-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Chiefs -9.5, Total 47.5
Series rewind: The Jets last won in Kansas City in 1998 and have since dropped four visits in a row. The Chiefs have also controlled the overall series recently with four victories in the past five meetings. Harrison Butker kicked a 26-yard field goal with 10:51 remaining for a 23-20 Kansas City victory in the last meeting in 2023.
The Chiefs have slipped into second place in the AFC West with consecutive road losses to the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. They are back at home this week and look to get back on track before they play four of their five on the road. Patrick Mahomes matched a season best with three touchdown passes and had his second-highest yardage output (321) in last week’s 28-24 loss in Denver. Running back Emmett Johnson had five catches for 128 yards, including a 73-yard score, while Travis Kelce had five grabs for 67 yards. Rashee Rice returned from the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 4 and had seven catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Walker has rushed for just 105 yards on 35 carries the last two weeks. He had 665 yards through the first five games. The Chiefs have just nine sacks through seven games. New York has lost three straight games and is entering a stretch of three road contests in four games. The Jets notched a season high in points last week but also allowed their most while falling 38-33 to the visiting Las Vegas Raiders. New York’s Geno Smith passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns while Braelon Allen rushed for a career-best 147 yards in his second straight 100-yard outing and third of the season. Allen is 10th in the NFL with 565 rushing yards. Star wideout Garrett Wilson (concussion) is out.
Las Vegas Raiders (4-4) at San Francisco 49ers (6-1)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: 49ers -9.5, Total 51.5
Series rewind: San Francisco has won five of the past six meetings, with the first five taking place while the Raiders were still based in Oakland. The 49ers prevailed 37-34 in an overtime shootout in Las Vegas late in the 2022 season. Christian McCaffrey had 193 scrimmage yards (121 rushing, 72 receiving) and rushed for a touchdown in that contest.
The 49ers’ unbeaten run was halted two weeks ago out in a 29-20 loss to the host Atlanta Falcons. San Francisco had its bye last week. McCaffrey (hamstring) was injured against the Falcons and was a limited participant in practice Thursday. McCaffrey’s highest rushing output this season is just 75 yards, but he does have eight rushing touchdowns. Brock Purdy has passed for 1,748 yards and 15 touchdowns against four interceptions. He threw two picks against Atlanta. Tight end George Kittle leads the club with 425 receiving yards and five touchdowns and is tied with McCaffrey (34) for the receptions lead. Cornerback Renardo Green has all three of San Francisco’s interceptions. Former Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa (knee, calf) was limited Thursday and could return after a five-game absence. The Raiders broke a four-game skid with last week’s 38-33 victory over the host New York Jets. Kirk Cousins threw for 247 yards and had three passing scores for the fourth time that season. Overall, he has 19 touchdowns against five interceptions and has played well enough to keep the organization from being tempted to replace him with No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Mike Washington Jr., a fourth-round pick this season, rushed for 83 yards on 25 carries against the Jets. Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick of the 2025 draft, received just two carries for 9 yards despite being healthy. Maxx Crosby registered a sack against New York, his third of the season.
Arizona Cardinals (3-5) at Seattle Seahawks (4-4)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Seahawks -8.5, Total 39.5
Series rewind: The Seahawks are gunning for their 11th consecutive win in the series, which includes a 31-7 victory at Arizona in September.
Gardner Minshew took over as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback after rallying Arizona from a 17-3 deficit in the third quarter at Dallas last week. A few days later, Jacoby Brissett, who started the first eight games of the season, was traded to the Baltimore Ravens. The Seahawks kept the QB carousel spinning for this game as they ruled out Sam Darnold with a quadriceps injury. Drew Lock will start for the second time this season against the Cardinals. He is coming back from a two-game hiatus to treat an elbow injury. Lock threw three TD passes at Arizona in Seattle’s 24-point win in Week 2. The Seahawks expect other backfield reinforcements to be available. Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price could give Seattle a loaded RB corps with Emanuel Wilson, who rushed for 92 yards against Arizona in the first matchup. Cardinals running back Tyler Allgeier had 191 yards from scrimmage at Dallas.
Green Bay Packers (5-3) at New England Patriots (5-3)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m.
FanDuel odds: Patriots -3, Total 44.5
Series rewind: Green Bay leads the series 7-6, won the last game the teams played 27-24 in overtime in 2022 and beat the Patriots 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997.
After each got off to slow starts, both teams have won four of their last five games. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love is averaging 280.8 passing yards per game, has thrown 16 touchdowns passes and been intercepted six times. Love leads the NFL with 2,246 passing yards and is also No. 1 among quarterbacks in pass attempts of at least 20 yards (52). Green Bay has been forced to throw because of its lackluster running game. The Packers are averaging 2.9 yards per carry, last in the league. Green Bay could become the first NFL team to finish a season with a rushing average of less than 3.0 yards per carry since the 1994 Patriots. New England quarterback Drake Maye got off to an exceptionally slow start in the follow-up campaign to finishing second in MVP voting last season. He has passed for 15 touchdowns and has been intercepted eight times, but has 14 TD passes and two interceptions in his last five games. He’ll be facing a Green Bay defense that has forced 15 turnovers, second-most in the NFL. Ten of those turnovers have been interceptions. Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson leads the Patriots with 119 touches; no other player has more than 57. Stevenson has a team-high 367 rushing yards, and his 23 catches rank third on the team.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-5) at Chicago Bears (6-2)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bears -6.5, Total 47.5
Series rewind: Tampa Bay has won four of the last six matchups, with the victories coming by an average of 23.3 points. Baker Mayfield passed for 317 yards and one touchdown in the most recent meeting as the Buccaneers posted a 27-17 home victory in 2023. The Bears have dropped the past three home games in the series.
The Buccaneers have become a run-heavy team since Mayfield returned from a dislocated thumb on his passing hand. They accumulated a stunning 582 yards on the ground combined in consecutive victories. Last week, Tampa Bay became the first team since the 1974 Buffalo Bills to win a game without completing a pass. It racked up a franchise-record 324 rushing yards in a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Bucky Irving rushed for 170 yards and Kenneth Gainwell added 140. Tampa Bay now leads the NFL with 168.6 rushing yards per game. Mayfield threw just three passes against Atlanta and has attempted just 14 over the past two games. The Bears have won three straight games since Caleb Williams returned from his hamstring injury. Chicago scored more than 30 points in all three contests, including Monday’s 34-17 road win over the Seattle Seahawks. Williams passed for more than 300 yards in the first two games of the stretch before settling for 247 and one touchdown against Seattle. Chicago owns the league’s second-best rushing attack at 150.8 yards per game, but the Bears were better on the ground over the first four games when Kyle Monangai rushed for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Monangai (toe, thumb) has missed the past four games and also didn’t partake in practices on Wednesday or Thursday. The contest will be the second for defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons since the Bears acquired him from the Tennessee Titans. He had two tackles for loss and a sack in his Chicago debut.

Doncic recorded his 11th career 50-point game, moving into a tie for 10th place on the NBA’s all-time list, and his fourth consecutive game with at least 40 points. He has scored at least 40 points six times in nine games. His 17-for-33 shooting night included a 62-foot, three-quarter-court heave for a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

Spurs 124, Kings 109

Celtics 119, Hornets 80
A well-rested Jayson Tatum tallied 34 points in a stellar outing as Boston blew out host Charlotte.

Tatum, who sat out for the first time this season Wednesday vs. Milwaukee as part of designed rest, had 24 points by halftime on 8-for-14 shooting that included five 3-point connections. By game’s end, he was 11-for-11 on free throws.
The Hornets suffered their sixth consecutive loss, falling to 2-4 in home games. They shot 29.3% from the floor, making 11 of 50 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

GOLF
BUDDING STAR BEN JAMES TAKES LEAD AT WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY CHAMPIONSHIP
Ben James converted his eighth birdie on his final hole of the day Friday to enter the weekend with a one-shot lead at the World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
James’ bogey-free 64 propelled him to 15-under-par 129 through two rounds at El Cardonal at Diamante. Peter Malnati, who also posted a second-round 64, was at 14 under and Zac Blair (68) was alone in third at 12 under.
Play was suspended Friday at about 5:50 p.m. local time due to darkness with five players on the course. They’ll return to finish up Saturday morning, though the cut line is expected to remain at 5 under. Kristoffer Ventura of Norway and amateur Preston Stout were right on 5 under with one and two holes to play, respectively.
James, 23, is in contention once again after collecting four top-five finishes, including a third and a second, since graduating from Virginia and becoming a PGA Tour member in June.
Starting on the back nine Friday, he birdied five holes starting at No. 17 to make his move. From there it was all pars until the par-3 ninth, where he stuck his tee shot to 10 feet and made the birdie.
“I birdied 17, kind of a mediocre pitch on 18, made like a 15-footer so I felt like that was a pretty good momentum putt, and birdied 1, 2 and 3,” James said. “And 3, hit driver right up to the front of the green and just two-putted. I would say that putt for birdie on 18 started a nice run.”
As part of the FedEx Cup Fall series, the top 100 players in points at the end of the fall retain full-time status on tour for next season. James’ card is already safe after he joined the tour as the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University rankings, but he can climb into the top 60 with a good result this week. Finishing Nos. 51-60 earns entry into the first two signature events of 2027.
James was No. 62 entering the week.
“I’m doing everything right, but for me I’m just trying to win each shot, just do the best I can for each golf shot and not thinking ahead,” James said. “Just do the best I can and, as I say, winning the shot at hand.”
Malnati had an eagle and seven birdies on his card but made his only bogey at his final hole, also the ninth, to relinquish his share of the lead.
Malnati, 39, is among those trying to secure his card beyond this season. If current results were to hold, he’s projected to jump from No. 157 to No. 107 in the standings.
“The pressure I’m feeling is that I love my job,” Malnati said. “This is what I strived for. I mean, I was probably 14-ish years old when I quit playing baseball to focus on my golf game. From the moment I made that decision, the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do was play golf on the PGA Tour.
“So I’m feeling a lot of pressure in that I’m not ready to be done doing that yet.”
Denny McCarthy and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger each shot 65s to move into a tie for fourth at 11 under.
Notable names on track to miss the cut include Billy Horschel and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas at 2 under, Joel Dahmen at 1 under, Canadian Taylor Pendrith at even par and Matt Kuchar (+1).

RORY MCILROY (11 BIRDIES) JUST 1 SHOT OFF LEAD AT ABU DHABI
Tyrrell Hatton carded a 7-under-par 65 on Friday to join Jon Rahm and Francesco Laporta atop the leaderboard at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship in the United Arab Emirates.
The trio holds a one-shot lead over a four-golfer group that includes Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman bounced back from the two-shot penalty he was assessed in the first round to record 11 birdies during his 9-under 63 at Yas Links GC.
“The course is very gettable today, there’s not a lot of wind. A lot of opportunities,” McIlroy said after his round. “I would say I’ll be at least two or three behind going into tomorrow. But it’s still in a much better position than I thought I would be.”
The Abu Dhabi tournament begins the DP World Tour’s two-event playoffs, with McIlroy seeking a record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title. He is third in the standings behind Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra and American Patrick Reed.
McIlroy, the world’s No. 2 golfer, overcame a bogey on his first hole before going on a birdie binge which included five in a row, starting on the ninth hole.
He said he did his best to move past his first-round penalty.
“Before I left the course, I made peace with it. I didn’t dwell on it,” McIlroy said Friday. “I’d much rather be two shots worse off than be called a cheat. At least I went out today and it wasn’t playing on my mind. I had a clear conscience, and I could just go and play.”
England’s Hatton played well in his own right, following up his 67 on Thursday with eight birdies against one bogey (on the par-4 16th) on Friday.
“Yeah, really happy how I’ve played,” he said. “Obviously, there’s been a couple of mistakes. But overall, compared to where I’ve been at over the last month and a half, it’s nice to put a couple of decent scores together again.”
Rahm shot a 67 on Friday. The Spaniard is playing in his first competitive tournament in seven weeks and his first-ever event at Yas Links.
“Pretty good play. Only thing to take back would be just a couple of bad tee shots right now, feeling fairly comfortable otherwise,” Rahm said. “Just there’s been a couple of swings off the tee that were unexpected. But hopefully I can fix that, but otherwise the play has been lovely.”
Italy’s Laporta (70) struggled a bit but remains one stroke ahead of Poland’s Adrian Meronk (67), Englishmen Matthew Jordan (67) and Sam Bairstow (68) and McIlroy.

DEFENDING CHAMP NASA HATAOKA SEIZES LEAD IN JAPAN
Defending champion Nasa Hataoka of Japan eagled the par-5 17th hole to seize a one-shot lead Friday after two rounds at the Toto Japan Classic.
Hataoka, who won in a playoff last year in a rain-shortened, 54-hole tournament, shot 30 on the back nine for an 8-under 64 on Friday at the Taiheiyo Club Minori Course in Omitama, Japan. She enters the weekend at 12-under 132.
“(The) weather is obviously change from yesterday so I played really well today, and especially iron shots were good,” Hataoka said through an interpreter. “So that kind of, you know, gave me a low score.”
Hataoka, 27, who is looking for her first win of the season, grew up not far from the course northeast of Tokyo.
“I don’t have a chance to play in front of so many Japanese fans, so I was really happy to be playing so well today,” she said.
Coming off last week’s successful title defense at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia, Japan’s Miyu Yamashita sits in second place at 11-under after carding a 67 on Friday. Her first bogey of the week at the par-4 18th hole cost her a share of the lead.
Slovenia’s Ana Belac (65 on Friday) and Japan’s Fuka Suga (67) are tied for third at 10-under.
Belac, a last-minute addition to the field this week, posted eight birdies over an 11-hole stretch before a bogey at the par-4 15th.
“I started the round pretty hot,” Belac said. “… I was like, oh, this is going to be fun today, because I just kept hitting it close and kind of blacked out.”
Sitting in a six-way tie for fifth place at 9-under are South Korea’s Youmin Hwang (67) and five Japanese golfers: Shuri Sakuma (65), Erika Hara (65), Yui Kawamoto (67), Sayaka Takahashi (69) and Aki Iwai (69). A dozen others are within six shots of Hataoka heading into Saturday.
Hara’s bogey-free round included three straight birdies at Nos. 10-12.
The LPGA Tour rookie said the crowd support gave her a boost.
“There are so many fans out here and they support me quite a lot so that helped me a lot,” Hara said. “They cheer me up when I made some birdie and when I made some bogey they support me … so that’s kind of helped me a lot.”

INDIANA SPORTS RELEASES/HEADLINES
COLTS
After playing four road games in five weeks, the Colts return home on Sunday to kick off a November largely spent in Indianapolis. Three of the Colts’ next four games are at Lucas Oil Stadium, beginning on Sunday against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.
Let’s look at a few things to watch on Sunday afternoon in downtown Indianapolis:
Can the Colts’ offense come to life against a struggling Cowboys defense?
This is one of those “something’s gotta give” games in which two struggling units go head-to-head:
Stat DAL defense (rank) IND offense (rank)
Yards per play
5.9 (29th) 4.5 (31st)

Takeaways/Turnovers
6 (T-28th) 15 (T-29th)
Points per game
26.6 (27th) 20.1 (26th)
Really, these numbers could’ve been distilled into yards per play and takeaways/turnovers. The Cowboys give up plenty of yards and don’t take the ball away; the Colts have struggled to consistently gain yards and have turned the ball over at a high rate.
The Colts’ offense has recently run a gauntlet of difficult defenses, though, with three of their last four games against the NFL’s three top scoring defenses: The Pittsburgh Steelers (18.0 points/game, 3rd), Minnesota Vikings (13.3 points/game, 1st) and Jacksonville Jaguars (15.1 points/game, 2nd). The last time the Colts faced a bottom-10 scoring defense (Washington in Week 4), they scored 30 points.
Sauce Gardner & Charvarius Ward Sr. against CeeDee Lamb & George Pickens
Among cornerbacks with at least 150 coverage snaps, Gardner has the highest forced incompletion rate (28.6 percent) in the NFL, while Ward is ninth (19.4 percent). Gardner, as you’d expect, has only been targeted 21 times on 227 coverage snaps – about one in every 11 coverage snaps, and about two and a half times per game.
“When you’re a talented player like that, teams don’t want to throw at you every down,” head coach Shane Steichen said, “and that’s respect to him and the way he operates.”
Lamb, meanwhile, enters Week 9 leading the NFL in targets (94) and is third in both receptions (60) and yards (709). But it’s not as simple as telling Gardner and Ward to lock down Lamb and Pickens on every snap.
Pickens has run 77 routes from the slot, eighth-most in the NFL, while Lamb has run 73 routes from the slot, tied for 10th most. The Cowboys intentionally move both players around instead of isolating them to an outside position, which is where they’ll draw matchups with Gardner and Ward.
So when Lamb and Pickens are lined up as outside receivers, expect the Colts to trust Gardner and Ward to lock them down. But that won’t be on every snap, meaning the Colts will have to deploy a plan to those receivers down when the Cowboys move them away from those two outside corners.
There are several young players to watch.
The Ohio State defensive end duo of Jaylahn Tuimoloau and Caden Curry has flashed as of late, and look for both players to continue to see upticks in their playing time. Against the Jaguars, Tuimoloau pummeled quarterback Trevor Lawrence on a strip-sack Curry recovered; he had another pressure that could’ve resulted in a sack had a Jaguars offensive lineman not kicked his leg out to trip Tuimoloau after the 2025 second-round pick won early into a first-half snap.
And Curry hit a clean spin move to quickly hit Lawrence in the second half, resulting in Laiatu Latu bringing down the Jaguars quarterback for a sack.
“He did a heck of a job,” defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said of Curry. “He missed an opportunity on a sack. He had the guy in his grasp and Latu was able to clean it up. But his overall effort, you start with that. It showed up on that screen play, the one screen he makes the play, clubs – tries to punch the ball out with a good attempt of a strip attempt, which was fantastic. He can do multiple jobs for us, both outside and we moved him inside a little bit now with Buck (DeForest Buckner) being gone as an inside rusher on third down. And that’s where he came clean on that sack, or missed sack opportunity. But overall, hard-trying guy who brings multiple roles to the table. So, we’ll continue to get him some more snaps.”
Defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore signed a contract extension this week after a disruptive and productive first eight games.
Linebacker CJ Allen will look to follow up his 10-tackle, one-sack showing in his first NFL start with another solid performance on Sunday as well. With linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) out, Allen will wear the green communications dot on his helmet this week.
And on offense, left guard Jalen Farmer will make the second start of his career – and will likely draw a tough assignment in four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

INDIANA PACERS
Game Preview
The Pacers (3-6) continue their road trip on Saturday as they travel to Mexico City for a meeting with the Denver Nuggets (4-3) following a big win in Memphis on Wednesday. The Pacers seek to capitalize on their improved health as well as the momentum captured in Memphis as they snapped a five-game skid to return to the win column ahead of their clash with Denver.
Indiana has been plagued with injuries to open the season, but had enough juice to topple the Grizzlies on Wednesday, 107-103. Andrew Nembhard’s 22 points led the Pacers, and Pascal Siakam contributed 20 points. Six Pacers recorded double-figure scoring totals, including rookie Braden Smith in his second career start.
Denver’s Nikola Jokic has finished first or second in MVP voting in each of the last six seasons, but a slow start to the 2026-27 campaign has the Nuggets in a mediocre position. Jokic is shooting a career-low 22 percent from 3-point range, and his 50 percent shooting from the field is his lowest mark in nine seasons.
Despite that, Jokic is averaging 23 points, nearly 10 rebounds, and just over nine assists per game. He’s already recorded three triple-doubles in seven games, and the Nuggets look to be gaining some momentum.
Alongside Jokic, Murray is thriving. His 25 points per game lead the Nuggets, and he’s averaging a career-high 5.4 rebounds. Murray also notches just shy of six assists per game (5.9).
The Pacers will match up with the Nuggets twice this season – once in Mexico City and again later in the season in Denver. Last season, Indiana lost the season series to the Nuggets, 0-2, and Murray gave the Pacers 52 points in Denver’s lone trip to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Indiana will look to flip that result this year, beginning in Mexico City on Saturday.
Probable Starters
Pacers: G – Braden Smith, G – Andrew Nembhard, F – Aaron Nesmith, F – Pascal Siakam, C – Ivica Zubac
Nuggets: G – Jamal Murray, G – Christian Braun, F – Cameron Johnson, F – Aaron Gordon, C – Nikola Jokic
Injury Report
Pacers: T.J. McConnell – questionable (right hamstring strain), Kelly Oubre Jr. – questionable (left calf contusion), Johnny Furphy – out (right ACL repair/surgery), Tyrese Haliburton – out (left hamstring strain), Ben Sheppard – out (left meniscus surgery)
Nuggets: DeMar DeRozan – probable (lower back spasms), Julian Strawther – out (left knee sprain)
Last Meeting
December 3, 2025: The Pacers fell to the Nuggets at Gainbridge Fieldhouse as Jamal Murray’s 52-point night carried Denver across the finish line, 135-120.
Murray shot 19-for-25 from the field, including 10-for-11 from 3-point range, as the Nuggets hot shooting night outpaced the Pacers at home. Murray added four assists and six rebounds, and Nikola Jokic contributed 24 points, eight rebounds, and 13 assists.
Pascal Siakam led the Blue and Gold with 23 points. Indiana shot 52 percent from the field, and 46 percent from 3-point range, but the Nuggets couldn’t miss. Denver shot 59 percent from the field, and 61 percent from deep.
Indiana made a push late – the Pacers scored 72 points in the second half, including 41 points in the fourth quarter – but Denver’s efficient shooting was too much to overcome. The loss marked the Pacers’ second straight after winning back-to-back games for the first time in the season.
Noteworthy
The Pacers and Nuggets will play in the NBA’s 16th regular season contest held in Mexico City, dating back to the first in 1997.
Saturday’s contest marks just the third time Indiana will play a regular season game outside of the United States or Canada. The Pacers have played eight total preseason games overseas.
Andrew Nembhard’s younger brother, Ryan Nembhard, is a guard for the Denver Nuggets.
Andrew Nembhard’s former Gonzaga teammate, Julian Strawther, also plays for the Nuggets.
Siakam is 20 points away from reaching 13,000 career points. He will be the 235th player in NBA history to reach that milestone.

INDY FUEL
CINCINNATI- The Indy Fuel visited the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night, facing them for the fifth time already in this young season. After going up 3-0, the Fuel gave up three goals to Cincy, tying the game before ultimately defeating the home team, 5-3.
1ST PERIOD
Fuel defenseman Matt Petgrave took the game’s first penalty at 6:14 for hooking, but the Fuel were able to kill it off.
Owen Robinson scored his second goal of the season to put the Fuel up 1-0 at 12:11 in the first period. This goal was unassisted.
Despite being down by one goal, Cincinnati outshot the Fuel 13-9 in the first frame.
2ND PERIOD
Just 59 seconds into the second period, Chase Dafoe and Cincy’s Kurtis Henry took offsetting five minute major penalties for fighting.
At 2:27, Anthony Petruzzelli scored his second goal of the season with the help of Jadon Joseph and Jackson DeSouza. That would be DeSouza’s first point for the Fuel and in the ECHL.
Dean Loukus took a tripping penalty at 3:47 to put the Fuel on the penalty kill and they were successful.
At 6:45, Mike Brown and Cincinnati’s Matt Hellickson each took two minute minor penalties for roughing and slashing respectively. Both of those penalties were killed off.
Frank Djurasevic took a holding call at 17:27 to put the Fuel on the power play, however that lasted just eleven seconds before Indy’s Cody Laskosky was sent to the penalty box for slashing.
It became 4-on-3 at 18:21 when Hellickson joined Djurasevic in the box for holding. All of that led to a goal by Jacob Perreault at 18:41 on the power play. Mitchell Hoelscher and Paul Ludwinski had the assists on that goal to put the Fuel up 3-0.
Indy massively outshot the Cyclones, 14-4 in that period for a total of 23-17 in the game up to that point.
3RD PERIOD
At 2:07, DeSouza took a holding penalty, putting the Cyclones on the power play but it was killed off.
Cincinnati’s Nathan Burke, the former Fuel defenseman, scored to break the shutout at 7:57. Jadon Joseph and Djurasevic exchanged blows and took offsetting roughing penalties at 8:20 next.
Max Smolinski scored at 8:52 to cut the Fuel’s lead in half and bring the score to 3-2. Adam Kydd tacked on another at 11:47 to tie the game before Indy called a timeout.
Ross Mitton was called for boarding at 15:23, giving the Fuel a crucial power play chance. Perreault was able to capitalize on it with a power play goal assisted by Kyler Kupka and Hoelscher. This put Indy up 4-3 at 17:16.
The Cyclones pulled their goaltender from the net in favor of the extra attacker, but it did not work as Dustin Manz tacked on an empty net goal to give Indy the 5-3 win after outshooting the Cyclones 37-26.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Seven years after opening the doors to a beautiful on-campus arena, the Indiana volleyball team (14-8, 7-6 Big Ten) played its 100th all-time match at Wilkinson Hall on Friday (Nov. 6) evening. Behind a gutsy defensive effort, IU dominated Iowa (25-17, 25-19, 25-12) to pick up its fifth Big Ten sweep of the season. The Hoosiers are just one win away from clinching back-to-back winning seasons.
After spending most of October on the road, IU enjoyed a full week of rest and practice inside its own gym. That was reflected in Friday’s effort as head coach Steve Aird’s group played one of its best defensive performances of the year. 12 team blocks, 43 digs and consistently tough serving kept Iowa out of any rhythm in the entire match. The Hawkeyes had just 28 kills in the contest and hit .030 with 25 attacking errors.
While she waited for her offense to get going, second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager set the tone defensively. She had a career high six blocks and contributed nine digs as well. She finished the night with nine kills, one of four players with at least eight kills in the match. Three different players had at least four blocks, including fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry who picked up the 400th block of her outstanding college career.
Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum found her footing early in the match and hit a blistering .417 with 12 kills in the dominant victory. IU’s three pin hitters combined for 30 kills. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic dished out 38 assists and set the Hoosiers to their eighth match of the year hitting .300 or better. She picked up her second double-double in as many games with a team best 11 digs.
IU is inching closer to punching its ticket to this year’s Big Ten Tournament. A win on Sunday over Illinois (Nov. 8 – 2 p.m.) or some help on Saturday would ensure a trip to Fishers later this month. The contest against Illinois will be streamed on B1G+ from Wilkinson Hall.
How it Happened
• A complete defensive effort hampered any chances that Iowa had of winning on Friday night. IU led the way in blocks (12.0-5.0), digs (43-38) and team hitting percentage (.310-.030). On top of that, IU had five service aces to just seven errors from the end line. Iowa hit negative in sets one and three and barely went above .000 for the match.
• When IU’s pin attackers are flying around and efficient, it’s awfully hard to stop. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum, second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager and third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark combined for 30 kills on the night. IU added 12 combined kills out of the middle in the dominant win.
Top Hoosier Performers
#13 Tatum, Avry
12 kills, 4 blocks, .417 hitting percentage
#10 Krickovic, Teodora
38 assists, 11 digs, 2 aces
#77 Granberry, Kiki
8 kills, 4 blocks, 2 assists
Notes to Know
• Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry became the 20th active played in NCAA division one volleyball with 400 career blocks on Friday night. She came into the match needing just one and picked it up early in the opening set. She has a team best 89.0 blocks (1.31 per set) on the season and is among the Big Ten’s leaders in that category this year.
• On that same note, IU has picked up 12 blocks in each of the last three matches. The Hoosiers have reached double digits in that category in six of the last seven games overall and in eight Big Ten contests this year. It’s the second time this year (at Ohio State, Oct. 23) that IU has had 12 blocks in just a three-set match.
• IU put together a .310 hitting percentage in Friday’s win behind 12 kills from fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum. It’s the 23rd time over the last two years that the Hoosiers have hit .300 or better in a match. Tatum is on a run of five-straight matches reaching double-digit kills.
• This was the 100th IU match played at Wilkinson Hall since the building opened back in 2019. In those matches, IU has put together a 57-43 record (.570 winning percentage). Since 2022, IU has gone 45-18 (.714) in Wilkinson Hall and now has three wins on its home floor in Big Ten play this season.
##############
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry reached another big milestone on Friday (Nov. 6) evening, her first during her time with the Hoosiers. With four blocks in the win over Iowa, Granberry became the 20th active player in NCAA division one volleyball to reach 400 career blocks. She finished with four on the night for the Hoosiers.
During her college career, Granberry has been one of the best players at her position. She’s averaging a career high 1.31 blocks per set this season, a top five mark in the Big Ten. During conference games only, Granberry is second in the league with 1.44 blocks per set. She needs one more rejection to reach 90 blocks in a season for the fourth time in her career.
Granberry’s impact has been felt in a big way by the IU program this year. The Hoosiers have had double-digit blocks in six of the last seven matches this season. After a win over Iowa, IU will return to action on Sunday (Nov. 6) with a chance to secure back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in over 20 years.

NOTRE DAME HOCKEY
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Fighting Irish erased a two-goal deficit before Evan Werner scored the winner in overtime to deliver Notre Dame a thrilling 5-4 victory over Penn State inside Pegula Ice Arena on Friday evening.
All five goals were scored by five different players in the win, as Hagen Burrows, Dashel Oliver, Brennan Ali and Danny Nelson also added goals in the winning effort.
Defensemen Henry Nelson and Paul Fischer each recorded two assists in the contest.
Freshman goaltender Patrick Quinlan picked up the first win of his collegiate career, finishing with 36 saves on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish wasted little time opening up the scoring, as they found the back of the net within the first five minutes of play to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead.
Fischer collected a pass inside the blue line and skated past two Penn State players before his shot was redirected by Burrows into the back of the net for his first career goal with Notre Dame.
The Nittany Lions leveled the score at the 12:50 mark of the first period, as Justin Poirier scored on the power play to make it 1-1.
Penn State added another power play goal less than three minutes later to take its first lead of the evening at 2-1.
The Fighting Irish battled back and tied the game at 2-2 just over three minutes into the second period. Will Belle’s shot was saved but Oliver finished the rebound on the backside of the play for his first goal of the season.
The hosts immediately responded to retake the lead at 3-2, scoring less than three minutes after Notre Dame evened the score off a rebound in front of the crease.
The Nittany Lions pushed their lead to two at the 13:24 mark of the second, scoring a short-handed goal to make it 4-2.
With less than two minutes left in the period the Irish went on the power play for the second time of the game and cashed in with 15 seconds left in the second as a Henry Nelson shot from the point was redirected into the back of the net by Ali for his second of the season to pull the Irish back within one at 4-3 heading into the second intermission.
Notre Dame completely erased the two-goal deficit at the 8:55 mark of the third period, as Henry Nelson’s shot from just inside the offensive zone was redirected by his brother Danny from right in front of the crease to pull level at 4-4.
The Irish nearly took the lead within the final four minutes of regulation, as Cole Brown’s shot went off the pipe on a Notre Dame power play.
On the other end Quinlan made a number of huge saves in the final 90 seconds to send the game into overtime.
The Irish controlled the majority of the overtime session, creating numerous scoring chances in the 3-on-3. All the pressure paid off in the final two minutes. Danny Nelson found Evan Werner with a perfect pass, who got just in front of the defenseman and managed to lift a shot that the Penn State goalkeeper was unable to keep out, which gave Notre Dame the win.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 13th-ranked Notre Dame women’s basketball team cruised to a 123-40 victory over Stonehill on Friday night inside Purcell Pavilion, improving to 2-0 on the season.
The 123 points scored were the second-most in program history and the most under Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Head Women’s Basketball Coach Niele Ivey.

Jacy Abii stuffed the stat sheet in her first official home action as an Irish. The freshman scored 17 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and accounted for six steals and blocked four shots.
Notre Dame put together a sizzling shooting performance, knocking down 51 of 82 attempts from the field (62.2 percent). HOW IT HAPPENED:
Notre Dame opened the home season with a 17-5 start, including an 11-1 run that forced a Stonehill timeout not even five minutes into the game. All five Irish starters scored in the first bit of early action, led by five from Madison St. Rose. Notre Dame was 8-10 from the field to open the game, including 7-7 from two point range.
The Irish led 30-10 at the end of the first quarter. Notre Dame was dominant on the glass early, outrebounding Stonehill 18-3 in the opening frame, led by seven from Anaya Hardy. Eight of Notre Dame’s rebounds were offensive, as the Irish made their presence known down low with 16 points in the paint in the first quarter.
Jenica Lewis opened the second quarter with her first three of the night, part of an 11-0 run to open the second quarter for Notre Dame. After a Skyhawks bucket, the Irish ran out to a 16-0 run, outscoring Stonehill 27-2 in just over six minutes of action in the second quarter.
The Irish went into the locker room up 67-21, the third-most points scored in a half in program history. All five Irish starters were in double digits, led by 15 from Hidalgo and 14 from Macy, while Hardy notched a first half double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Notre Dame was 31-47 in the first half, a blistering 66 percent from the field. Those 31 field goals made were the most first half makes underIvey, besting the 25 first-half field goals last season against Bellarmine and two years ago against Stephen F. Austin.
The Irish extended their lead to 57 points with 4:36 left in the third quarter, up 81-24 at the media timeout. Abii was the second Irish to record a double-double in this one, ripping down her 10th rebound to go along with 12 points with just under a quarter and a half left.
Notre Dame closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to go up 95-30 at the end of three. Macy led the way with eight points in the quarter, followed closely by six from both Hidalgo and Lewis.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
Butler defeated Lipscomb, 104-57 on Thursday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse and it was a record night for the Bulldogs. For the first time in program history, BU had six players in double figures for the second consecutive game. Lili Krasovec (15), Tamar Singer (13), Saniya Jackson (13), Judit Valero (12), Taya Ellis (10), and Laniah Wills (10) all eclipsed the double-digit mark against the Bisons.
Thursday’s game was also the first time in program history that three players recorded double-doubles in the same game. Singer (13 points, 13 assists), Ellis (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Wills (10 points, 10 rebounds) were the three Bulldogs who recorded double-doubles. Wills’s 10 points and 10 rebounds are both career-bests for the freshman.
The Bulldogs’ win over Lipscomb marked the first time in program history that the team has scored 100+ points in back-to-back games. Butler also scored the most points in a quarter in program history against the Bisons, posting 37 in the third quarter. The 37-point quarter bettered the previous mark of 35 that BU scored against Northeastern in the 2019 WNIT tournament.
Through two games, Singer leads the nation in assists with 23 to her credit. The junior dished out 10 helpers in the season opener against Tennessee Tech and added 13 against Lipscomb, which is a new career-high for the point guard. Singer is also tied for first nationally in double-doubles with two in two games so far. The floor general is also 11th nationally in steals with nine.
Butler ranks top 15 nationally in multiple categories: assists per game (12th, 26.0 apg), free throws made per game (10th, 23.50) and scoring offense (12th, 106 ppg).
In the first two games of the season, the Bulldogs have scored 128 points in the paint. BU has limited its opponents to only 42 paint points in the first two games.
Butler’s bench has contributed 91 points in two games thus far. Averaging 45.5 bench points per game ranks 26th nationally.
Saniya and Nevaeh Jackson are the lone returners for Butler. BU added 11 new players this offseason, with four freshmen and seven transfers joining the squad.
Saniya Jackson averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and 1.9 steals per game last year, both marks led the squad. The redshirt-junior started all 31 games for BU and averaged 9.2 points per game while playing 30.4 minutes per game.
BU’s transfer class includes 2025-26 MAC All-Defensive selection Singer (Miami Ohio), Horizon League All-Freshman selection Bystry (Northern Kentucky), Lili Krasovec (Purdue Fort Wayne), Destiny Macharia (Purdue Fort Wayne), Valero (FIU), Ellis (Bowling Green) and Jacy Weisbrod (Northern Michigan). Both Krasovec and Macharia followed Marchesano from Purdue Fort Wayne to Indianapolis.
Laniah Wills, Olivia Hastings, Lexi Baer and Sage Miskel comprised Butler’s 2025-26 signing class and are the four freshmen on the roster. Miskel is the daughter of former Butler men’s basketball Academic All-American, Chris Miskel.
Butler’s roster has players from five different states (Indiana, Wisconsin, Maryland, Tennessee, Illinois) and five different countries (Israel, Spain, Hungary, Canada, Australia).

BUTLER MEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler men’s soccer team came into the final match on the regular season schedule in contention for a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, but a 3-1 loss to the visiting Xavier brought an end to that objective. The Musketeers, who were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, held a two-goal lead going into the break. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half in the 57th minute, but Xavier tallied one more and held on for the victory.
Butler ended the regular season 3-9-3 and 3-3-2 in BIG EAST competition, finishing fourth in the Midwest Division and seventh overall. Xavier (10-2-4) finished 3-2-3 in conference play and third in the division, eliminating them, as well, from the BIG EAST Tournament.
On the Record with Head Coach Ian Sarachan
“Tonight was obviously a tough way to end the year, but we are really proud of this group and the way we finished the second half of the season. Putting ourselves in a position to have a chance to make the BIG EAST tournament tonight was really a testament to our team’s mentality over the last several weeks. We’ve put a lot of work into the foundations here, and we know that it’s going to keep getting better as we move forward. I think we’ve set the tone for what this program is turning into, and I’m excited about that. Obviously, it hurts now, and for some of these guys, it’s their last game here. But we know we got a lot out of this this BIG EAST season for our program, and we’ve got a lot to look forward to.”
Key Moments
20′ | Xavier’s Alejandro Silvestrini serves a corner kick from the left flag. Ekene Okeke charges in goal area, leaps and heads in the first goal of the match.
37′ | A Xavier throw-in from Gerard Lorente lands at the feet of Nathan Trickett who plays back to down the left touch line to Lorente. A pass toward the center finds Ely Detty near the 18, and he shoots and scores. The Musketeers have a 2-0 lead.
— HALFTIME –
57′ | Finn Moran is fed the ball and is threatening near the left post. He is taken down by a Xavier defender and earns a penalty kick. Kiel Higginson strikes from the spot, just inside the right post. The goal cuts the Musketeers’ lead in half.
63′ | A Butler handball in the penalty area gives Xavier an opportunity from the spot. Gun Ha Lee converts, and the Musketeers are again up two goals, 3-1.

The Sycamores shot 40.0% (22-55) from the floor, 47.1% (8-17), and 73.9% (17-23) from the free throw line in the contest, marking their second consecutive game shooting 40.0% from the floor.
The Sycamores led the way in bench scoring in the contest with Chance Puryear (8), Duce Paschal (8), Kade Speckman (2), and Meechie White (7) all scoring after checking in.
Chance Puryear (+15) and Duce Paschal (+13) were the Sycamores’ leaders in plus/minus on the court with the duo helping lead the way in Indiana State’s comeback from the second-half double-digit deficit.
The Sycamores and Cardinals tied with 36 rebounds apiece in the contest with both teams recording exactly 11 offensive rebounds and 25 defensive boards.
Indiana State improves to 79-63 all-time against Ball State after winning their fifth consecutive game in the series.

INDIANA STATE VOLLEYBALL
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – On a night where Indiana State recognized its four departing seniors and Macy Lengacher reached 1,000 career digs, it was instead visiting Valparaiso which walked out of Hulman Center victorious in a thrilling five-set match (25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 17-15) Friday night.
Lengacher, who was one of those four seniors recognized after the match, became the 12th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs and the first to accomplish the feat since the 2020-21 season, reaching the mark in the third set of the match. The Wakarusa, Indiana, native tied her season high with 22 digs in the contest
Kira Holland led the Sycamore attack with 18 kills and also added 18 digs, while Curry Kendall added 14 digs. Hadley Hardersen dished out 37 assists and tacked on 10 digs, while Ella Scott added nine kills and four blocks.
Set 1 | Valparaiso 25, Indiana State 21
Two early kills from Holland got things started for the Sycamores, as the Trees and Beacons traded runs in the front portion of the set. Hardersen and Scott put Indiana State ahead with kills midway through, but a scoring run for the Beacons out of the media timeout saw the Trees down 18-15. An Anna Ptacin kill and a Corinne Knapp ace cut the deficit to one, but that was as close as the Sycamores got down the stretch as Valparaiso claimed the opener 25-21.
Set 2 | Indiana State 25, Valparaiso 19
Indiana State came out firing in the second with early kills from Holland and Kendall to go along with aces from Hardersen and Knapp. Valpo eventually went on a run to claim the lead, but the Trees answered back with kills from Ava Robart, Kendall and Scott midway through the set. Scott tacked on a pair of block assists, teaming up with Holland and Kendall to put the Trees up 18-15, while fellow middle blocker Lily Mueller paired with Hardersen and Holland on blocks to extend the advantage out to five. A late ace from Holland and kills from Robart and Kendall sealed a 25-19 second set win for the Sycamores.
Set 3 | Indiana State 25, Valparaiso 21
Indiana State’s momentum carried into the early part of the third set with two kills from Robart and an ace from Scott. Kendall added a pair of aces of her own during a five-point run for the Blue and White, but Valpo used a run of its own to level the set midway through. Indiana State broke through with a 4-1 run, keyed by a pair of kills from Kendall, to pull ahead 18-14, and never trailed for the remainder of the set. A late run from Valpo cut the Sycamore lead to a pair, but Robart closed out the frame with a kill and an ace to give the Trees a 25-21 win in the third.
Set 4 | Valparaiso 25, Indiana State 22
Indiana State quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the strength of two kills from Kendall, with the Tulsa native also serving a pair of aces during a later four-point run to give the Sycamores a 9-3 lead. Valparaiso had a run of its own, going on a 13-4 run to pull ahead 17-14. Kills from Holland, Scott and Kendall fueled a late Sycamore run to get Indiana State within a point, but the visitors forced a deciding set by taking the fourth 25-22.
Set 5 | Valparaiso 17, Indiana State 15
Another early ace from Kendall helped the Trees jump out to a 3-1 lead, but Valpo countered with a 4-0 run to pull ahead. The Beacons extended their lead out to four, despite kills from Scott and Holland, and had the Trees on the brink of defeat before Kendall went back to the service line once again. Two aces and a kill from Kendall flipped the script and had the Sycamores on match point, but Indiana State was unable to close the deal. Valparaiso scored three of the last four points to win the fifth set 17-15 and spoil the Sycamores’ Senior Night.

VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team reached new ground while simultaneously going back to its roots to secure one of the most memorable victories in program history.
The Beacons upset RV/No. 24 Purdue 83-80 on Friday night at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.
The program’s ascension and momentum under fourth-year head coach Roger Powell Jr. added a significant victory on Friday night, doing so in a manner that has been synonymous with Valpo’s storied past – a buzzer-beater. Or in this case, two.
Sophomore Rakim Chaney (Rockford, Ill. / Rockford Auburn [212 Sports Academy]) hit a contested, game-tying 3 from right in front of the Valpo bench to beat the overtime buzzer after rebounding his own missed free throw with four seconds to play. Junior Justus McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West) dribbled the length of the court and hit a contested game-winning 3 from the right wing to beat the double overtime horn, sending Valpo into a state of pandemonium.
Valpo has had an increasing number of big moments in each of Powell’s seasons – improving the program’s win total with each passing year – but Friday’s victory over a top-25 Purdue team in a “guarantee game” marked the highlight of the Powell Era to date.
Valpo achieved the first true road win against a ranked opponent in program history and the fifth total ranked win in program lore. The historic win came through a method that is rooted deeply in the program’s identity – the buzzer beater. This one required two, with McNair etching himself alongside Bryce Drew and Ryan Broekhoff with the three most memorable shots in program history.
While McNair made the game shot of the night, Chaney made more shots than anyone else, totaling a career-high 35 points, Valpo’s highest individual single-game scoring output since 2016.
How It Happened
Valpo scored the game’s first bucket as Chaney drove to the basket for two, but the Beacons missed their next five shots, including a few clean looks. However, Valpo did great work on the defensive end during that opening stretch, forcing Purdue into four straight misses, leading to a 2-2 score at the first media timeout. The Boilermakers eventually missed six in a row before finally making their second basket of the evening.
Valpo faced a scoring drought of nearly eight minutes in length before Chaney notched the team’s second basket of the game. However, Valpo got enough stops in that stretch to stay in the game, limiting the run to eight. Chaney’s second basket made it a six-point game at 10-4 with 11:23 left in the first half.
Chaney had a huge first half, pouring in 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting while playing 18 of the game’s first 20 minutes. He accounted for 15 of the team’s 20 first-half points. Chaney drained an impressive 3 to beat the halftime horn, Valpo’s first made triple of the game after the squad had missed its first 10 attempts from deep.
Valpo heated up late in the first half, making five of its final seven attempts prior to the intermission. On the defensive end, Valpo held Purdue to 40.7 percent from the field (11-of-27) and 30.8 percent from 3 (4-of-13) in the first half. The Boilermakers led 32-20 at the break.
Sophomore Carter Hopoi (Tauranga, New Zealand / Mount Maunganui College NZ) slammed home a dunk for Valpo’s first second-half bucket. Valpo outscored Purdue 8-7 in the first five minutes of the second half, cutting slightly into the lead to make it 39-28 with 14:53 left in the second half. Valpo made three of its first four second-half shots, holding Purdue to 3-of-7 and 0-of-3 from 3 during that stretch.
Valpo fought to within seven at 39-32 with 14:18 remaining thanks to an 8-2 burst including a fastbreak basket by Terron Garrett (St. Louis, Mo. / Vashon [Minera Area College]). The Beacons got to within seven a second time after holding Purdue without a field goal for over four minutes, then a third time on a Hopoi dunk to make it 43-36.
The Beacons clawed to within five at 43-38 on a McNair basket. Purdue quickly stemmed the tide with a 3 on the other end, but Valpo got right back within six on another McNair hoop.
Valpo fought to within four with 8:26 remaining when Hopoi added another dunk on a feed from Chaney to make it 46-42. That was Valpo’s fifth make in its last six attempts at that juncture.
After Purdue led 32-17, Valpo outscored the Boilermakers 31-16 to get even at 48 with 5:37 remaining. Hopoi swished a jumper at the 5:46 mark to tie the score.
Chaney drained a go-ahead pull-up jumper with 4:49 remaining to put the Beacons ahead 51-50. McNair knocked down another go-ahead shot to make it 53-52 with 3:25 left. Chaney tied it with a pullup 3 at the 1:46 mark. McNair drained another one with 1:03 left in regulation to tie the game at 58.
Purdue missed a 3 with 45 seconds left, then Valpo missed a turn-around jumper with 23 ticks remaining. The Beacons got one more stop at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
Purdue scored the first four points of the first overtime on free throws. Chaney scored Valpo’s first points of the OT. Sader Servilus (Montreal, Quebec, Canada / Fort Erie International Academy) had a tip-in with 2:17 left in OT to cut the deficit to two.
The Boilermakers built up a six-point lead at 68-62 with 1:13 left in the first overtime. Hudson Scroggins (Lake Bluff, Ill. / Lake Forest [Kimball Union Academy]) made a pair of free throws to get Valpo to within four, then Bruno Alocen (Barcelona, Spain / Manresa [Indiana State]) hit a 3 despite being fouled with 48 seconds left in OT to shrink the Purdue lead to one at 68-67. He missed the free throw, and Purdue made two at the stripe with six seconds left in OT to expand the lead to three at 70-67.
With four seconds left in the first overtime, Chaney missed the front end of a 1-and-1, collected the rebound on his own miss, and beat the buzzer with a game-tying triple to level the score at 70 and force a second overtime.
Chaney had a traditional 3-point play to give Valpo a 73-72 lead early in the second overtime. McNair had a traditional 3-point play to make it 77-74 Valpo with 2:54 left in the second overtime.
Purdue made two free throws with 2:12 left in 2OT to trim the Valpo lead to one. Purdue took a 78-77 lead with a dunk with 39 seconds left in 2OT.
Pettigrew hit a monster 3 with 25 seconds on the 2OT clock, giving Valpo an 80-78 lead.
Purdue’s Daniel Jacobsen tied the game on a hook shot with five seconds left to level the score at 80.
Valpo had to go the length of the court with 4.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime in a tied game. McNair received the inbounds pass mid-backcourt and dribbled to the right wing, where he released a contested 3 just before the clock hit all zeros. The rest, as they say, is history.
Inside the Game
This marked Valpo’s first true road win over a Top-25 opponent ever (previously 0-44).
This marked Valpo’s first win against a ranked team since beating Drake on Feb. 7, 2021 at the ARC.

McNair hit the second true buzzer-beater of his career, as this marked Valpo’s first true buzzer-beater since McNair beat Western Michigan 76-73 on Dec. 20, 2024.
Valpo beat Purdue for the second time ever (third if you count a December 1995 game that was later ruled a forfeit in Valpo’s favor.) The last time Valpo beat Purdue in a game was Dec. 22, 1965, a 114-96 Valpo win at home. Valpo snapped a 10-game head-to-head losing streak to the Boilermakers (12 if you count the game that was later forfeited by Purdue as a Valpo loss.)

Purdue had won 19 straight home games vs. MVC dating back to Nov. 27, 1978 (Indiana State).
Sophomore Rakim Chaney had 35 points, the most by a Valpo player since Alec Peters had 35 on Dec. 22, 2016 vs. Santa Clara. The last time a Valpo player had more than 35 points in a game was Peters’ 39-point performance on Jan. 10, 2016 at Detroit.
Chaney had 35 points, eight rebounds, six assists and no turnovers, going 14-of-22 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3 before fouling out in 41 minutes. He had Valpo’s first 35-point, eight-rebound, six-assist game on record.
Chaney became the first Division-I player nationally with a 35-point, eight-rebound, six-assist, no-turnover game since Colorado State’s Antwan Scott on Jan. 16, 2016. Prior to that, it was Arizona’s Ivan Radenovic on March 3, 2007 at Stanford.
Chaney well exceeded his previous career high of 24 on Nov. 12, 2025 vs. Nicholls. His eight rebounds matched a personal best set on Nov. 16, 2025 vs. Bryant. His six assists were one shy of a career high.

Valpo is off to a 2-0 start to a season for the first time since 2017-18. This marked Valpo’s first win in a road opener since Nov. 15, 2017 at SIUE (94-69), snapping an eight-game road opener losing streak.
Valpo won despite being outrebounded 46-37. The Beacons won the turnover battle 11-9. Valpo committed single-figure turnovers despite playing two overtimes.
Valpo held Purdue to 37.5 percent from the field and 17.9 percent from 3.
Valpo pulled out the win despite the fact that Pettigrew was sidelined for a significant stretch due to cramping, plus Chaney, Hopoi and Kai Yu (Zhuhai, Guangdong, China / Link Prep [Bradley/Liberty]) all fouled out.
The win came in front of a sellout crowd at Mackey Arena, spoiling Purdue’s home opener and part of the school’s Homecoming weekend.

VALPO VOLLEYBALL
In a match that was a mirror image of the two program’s first meeting of the season, the Valpo volleyball team rallied to take the final two sets and held off a match point in the fifth set to earn a 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 17-15) win over Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. Friday evening. In the first set, junior Ava Helming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) became the 21st player in program history to hit the 1,000-kill milestone for her career.
How It Happened
Valpo trailed 3-1 in the decisive fifth set before scoring four in a row, two thanks to kills from Sarah Pippin (Niles, Mich./Edwardsburg), to take a 5-3 lead.
The Beacons pushed their fifth-set lead to four points at 11-7 on a solo block by Jessica Pickett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and still led by four at 12-8 before a 6-1 ISU run gave the Sycamores match point at 14-13 and forced a Valpo timeout.
Helming came up with a timeout out of the stoppage to push the decided set into extra points, and a Sycamore error gave Valpo its own match point at 15-14. A hitting error evened the set at 15-all, but the Beacons earned a second match point chance thanks to a kill from Kyla Bellich (Thomson, Ill./Prince of Peace Catholic) and converted on another Helming kill to close out the come-from-behind win.
Valpo took an opening set which featured 12 ties and seven lead changes, pulling away late as it took an 18-17 lead and eventually won the set 25-21, capped by back-to-back kills from Jordyn Gove (Amarillo, Texas/Randall).
The two sides were tied at 13-13 in the second set before a 4-0 run gave the Sycamores the lead for good to even the match.
Indiana State led throughout the third set, and while Valpo closed to within 23-21 late in the frame, ISU came up with back-to-back points to take the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Beacons overcame a 10-4 deficit in the fourth set, putting together a 6-0 run to erase the entirety of the deficit. They took the lead for good with a 6-1 stretch which turned a 13-11 deficit into a 17-14 lead, and while ISU closed to within 23-22 lead, Maggie Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond Burton Community [Central Michigan]) and Helming came up with back-to-back kills to force the decisive fifth set.
Inside the Match
Helming registered her second kill of the match at 10-10 of the first set, giving her 1,000 career kills. She is the 21st player in program history to reach that milestone.
Helming is only the fifth player in program history to hit that mark in less than three full seasons, joining Angie Porché, Lori Barton, Emily Campbell and Cheri Hughes.
Valpo won a match after successfully holding off a match point for the first time since its Oct. 19, 2024 win at Belmont.
Friday was the first time Valpo won after holding off a match point in the fifth set since a win over South Alabama Sept. 4, 2021.
The Beacons had been 0-3 in five-set matches in MVC play before Friday’s victory.
Valpo’s rally from down six points in the fourth set matched its largest deficit in a set it went on to win this season.
Helming and Gove tied for team-high honors with 12 kills, and both finished the night with double-doubles, as Helming registered a team-best 17 digs and Gove tallied 11 digs.
Pippin reached double digits in kills for the first time in her career, racking up 10 kills on .320 hitting.
Keira Lucas (Brazil, Ind./Northview) hit double figures in digs for the sixth time in MVC play with 16 digs, while Pickett led all players with five blocks.
Valpo held a slim .173-.166 edge in hitting percentage despite facing a 12-kill deficit (49-61), as the Sycamores committed 32 attack errors to the Beacons’ 21. Similarly, while ISU delivered 15 service aces to Valpo’s three, the Sycamores had 19 service errors versus the Beacons’ 10 to narrow the gap in that department.

Head Coach Courtney Boyd (0-33 at Valpo, 2nd season; 180-101 [.641] overall, 9th season): Courtney Boyd was named the ninth head coach of the Valparaiso University women’s basketball program on April 4, 2025. A national championship-winning head coach and player, an NAIA National Coach of the Year, and a two-time conference Coach of the Year, Boyd has won 20 or more games in seven of her first nine seasons as a head coach. She spent the two seasons prior to her arrival at Valpo at the helm of the Quincy University program after six seasons as head coach at Clarke University, leading the latter program to the NAIA national title in 2022-23.
Series Notes: Detroit Mercy holds a 17-13 advantage in the all-time series, including an 8-6 lead in games played at the ARC. The programs matched up in Detroit last season – the Titans won that contest 78-48, pulling away in the fourth quarter after opening the game on a 21-3 run before Valpo made it a six-point game at the half. The two sides last met at the ARC in December 2024 and played 10 extra minutes, with the Titans eventually prevailing 79-71 in double overtime.
@ValpoWBB…
…at Michigan State
– A triple from Jana Nogués with three and a half minutes to play in the opening period brought the Beacons within five at 11-6. MSU answered with 10 in a row, and while Allia von Schlegell connected on a triple with a minute to play, the Spartans got the last basket of the period to own a 23-9 lead at the end of one.
– MSU outscored Valpo 24-0 in the second period to take a 47-9 lead into halftime.
– After being held scoreless in the second quarter, the Beacons came out and scored 20 in the third period, led by six from Osadebamwen Igbinedion Omoruyi Michigan State put up 36 in that quarter, though, and held an 83-29 lead with 10 minutes to play.
– The Beacons and Spartans played to a 15-15 tie in the final quarter.
– von Schlegell led Valpo with nine points and five rebounds.
– Making her collegiate debut, Nogués finished with eight points.
– The Beacons ended the game shooting 26.7% (16-for-60) from the floor versus MSU’s 52.2% (36-for-69) clip. Valpo also committed 30 turnovers which the Spartans turned into 38 points.
…looking back at last year
– The Beacons went 0-32 during the 2025-26 season.
– Allia von Schlegell earned a spot on the MVC All-Freshman Team, Valpo’s first All-Freshman Team honoree since 2022-23 and only its third in its time in the MVC.
– Fiona Connolly averaged a team-high 12.7 points/game, a 9.2 points/game improvement in her scoring average year-over-year – the second-highest jump by a Valpo player in the last two decades.
…looking ahead
– The Beacons remain at home for their annual Education Day game on Tuesday with an 11 a.m. tip against Culver-Stockton.
– Valpo then faces a two-game road trip next weekend, playing at Purdue Fort Wayne Friday morning ahead of a Sunday afternoon game at Toledo.
…in the MVC
– Valpo is in its 10th season as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, having joined the Valley prior to the 2017-18 school year.
– The Beacons were picked outside of the top-six of the MVC preeason poll, as the Valley released only the top six selections.
– For the first time, the MVC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be part of Arch Madness in St. Louis this season.
…at the ARC
– Saturday’s game is the first of 15 regular season home games for the Beacons this season.
– Valpo hosts five home games in the nonconference slate, highlighted by a visit from Wisconsin, before facing each of the other 10 MVC teams at the ARC in conference play.
…in home openers
– This year’s team is attempting to buck a recent trend, as Valpo has won just one of its last eight home openers.
– Last season’s team took a tough loss at the ARC to open the home slate, falling 72-67 to Milwaukee in overtime.
– The lone victory in a home opener in that stretch for Valpo was a 72-65 triumph over Southern Miss in the first home contest of the 2022-23 season.
– This year’s home opener is the earliest in the calendar in program history, coming on Nov. 7. The previous earliest was Nov. 9, in 2024-25 against Purdue Fort Wayne and in 2012-13 against Indiana.
@Detroit_WBB
– The Titans enter Saturday’s game with a 1-1 record already this season, owning a season-opening win over Michigan-Dearborn and a loss at Illinois.
– UDM is coming off a 2025-26 season in which it finished with a 7-24 record and went 4-16 in Horizon League play.
– Paula Lopez, a transfer from Buffalo, has scored in double figures in each of the Titans’ first two games, while Mercer transfer Stephanie Utomi led UDM in scoring against UM-Dearborn and Naïma Diawara paced them against Illinois.
Former Conference Foes
– Valpo’s all-time series against the Titans includes a 10-year stretch where the two programs shared conference affiliation in the Horizon League (2007-17).
– Saturday’s meeting is the fifth between the two programs since Valpo joined the MVC – Valpo has only faced Bowling Green and Western Michigan more often in nonconference play in that time frame.
– UDM is one of three opponents on Valpo’s nonconference schedule with whom it has previously shared conference affiliation.
– Valpo and Loyola Chicago were together in the Horizon League from 2007-13 and in the MVC from 2017-22, while Valpo and Western Illinois were together in the Mid-Continent Conference from 1992-2007.
Revenge Tour
– Detroit Mercy is one of four nonconference opponents that Valpo will look to get revenge on after suffering defeats in nonconference play last season.
– The Beacons will also host South Dakota at the ARC, while traveling to SIUE and Central Michigan.
The Mitten State
– Valpo opens the season with back-to-back games against programs from the state of Michigan.
– In all, the Beacons will play four teams from Michigan in nonconference play – Michigan State, Detroit Mercy, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
– In all, Valpo’s 12 nonconference games come against schools from seven different states.
– This is the first time since the 2021-22 season that Valpo has faced four Michigan-based teams in nonconference play.
Collegiate Debuts
– The Beacons had three players make their collegiate debuts in the season opener at Michigan State.
– Jana Nogués and Dani Guedet were both in the starting lineup as true freshmen, while Denza Allen came off the bench.
– This year is the first season since 2015-16 that Valpo has had multiple freshmen start a season opener – that year, Meredith Hamlet, Hannah Schaub and Amber Lindfors all started their respective first collegiate games at Butler.
– Add sophomore Allia von Schlegell to the mix, and this year is the first time since 2016-17 that at least three underclassmen have started a season opener for Valpo.
Valpo Debuts
– Besides the three freshmen, four other players made their Valpo debuts in Tuesday’s game at Michigan State.
– Junior Osadebamwen Igbinedion Omoruyi was in the starting lineup for her first game as a Beacon.
– Coming off the bench for their first appearances at Valpo were graduate student Maddie Vejsicky, redshirt junior Hillary Offing and sophomore Constanza Aravena.
Who’s Back
– The Beacons return six players from last season’s roster, but only three who saw action.
– Allia von Schlegell and Autumn Dibb both saw action in all 32 games, with von Schlegell starting 25 times and Dibb starting on three occasions.
– Isabella Anderson appeared in 20 games off the bench.
– The trio combined for 26.3% of the team’s minutes played and 25.5% of the points scored last season.
– Maci Rhoades, Raeven Raye-Redmond and Nuala Connolly are all back at Valpo this season after sitting out last season due to injury.
Who’s New
– Valpo adds eight newcomers to its roster for the 2025-26 season – six transfers, four of whom have D-I experience, and two true freshmen.
– Maddie Vejsicky is in her final season of eligibility after spending the last two years at Akron, previously playing at San Diego and Virginia Tech.
– Osadebamwen Igbimedion Omoruyi comes to Valpo after playing two seasons at UTEP.
– Hillary Offing spent the last two years at Purdue Fort Wayne, sitting out the first year, after playing her first collegiate season at Penn State Lehigh Valley.
– Kylee Norkus spent two seasons at Evansville.
– Constanza Aravena played her first season of collegiate basketball at Miami Dade College, a junior college.
– Denza Allen signed with Bowling Green out of high school, but departed the school without competing last year.
– Dani Guedet comes to Valpo as a true freshman from Washington, Ill., while Jana Nogués hails from a few miles further away, as the freshman lives in Barcelona, Spain.
International Flavor
– For the second straight season, the Beacons feature a trio of international players on their roster, but all three are new to the team this season.
– Osadebamwen Igbimedion Omoruyi and Jana Nogués are both from Spain, while Constanza Aravena is from Chile.
– It is the first time the program has had a player from either Spain or Chile on its roster.
– In fact, Aravena is the first South American player in program history.
– The pair of Spaniards are the first players to suit up for Valpo from Europe since Ieva Jansone (2011-13) came from Latvia.
– Prior to last year, the 2006-07 season was the last time Valpo had featured three international players on its roster.
Injury Returns
– Three players on this year’s team are back with the Beacons after sitting out the entirety of last season due to injury.
– Raeven Raye-Redmond was Valpo’s starting point guard when she suffered an injury versus Detroit Mercy on Dec. 21, 2024 and has not played since.
– Maci Rhoades missed Valpo’s 2025 MVC Tournament game against Bradley with an injury which eventually sidelined her for the entirety of the 2025-26 season.
– Nuala Connolly is still looking to make her collegiate debut after missing out due to injury in her first season on campus.
– This is the first time since 2019-20 that Valpo has had players return to action after missing an entire season due to injury – both Marlee Profitt and Caitlin Morrison made their comebacks that year after missing the 2018-19 campaign.
Big Post Presence
– Osadebamwen Igbimedion Omoruyi brings her 6-4 frame to Union Street this season, making her the tallest Valpo player in some time.
– Last year’s team featured a pair of 6-3 players, but you have to go back to the 2018-19 season to find someone taller – Nicole Johanson checked in that season at 6-5.
Allia Back For More
– Sophomore Allia von Schlegell returns for her second season in the Valpo uniform after a standout freshman campaign.
– von Schlegell was an MVC All-Freshman Team selection as she averaged 11.2 points/game, second on the team and 61st nationally among freshmen.
– von Schlegell’s 358 total points were third-most by a freshman in program history; notably, the rest of the top-seven on that chart ended their careers among the top-12 in program history in career scoring.
– von Schlegell ranked 15th nationally among freshmen for 3-pointers made (62), while ranking third among MVC players in 3-point percentage (.352), fifth in free throw percentage (.865) and sixth in 3-pointers/game
– von Schlegell scored in double figures 18 times, including 12 games of 15+ points – the most by a Valpo freshman since Dani Franklin had 12 such games in 2014-15.
Medal-Winning Experience
– While she’s a newcomer at the collegiate level, Jana Nogués brings plenty of international experience with her.
– Most recently, Nogués was part of Spain’s bronze medal team at the 2026 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup, where she was the tournament’s youngest player at the age of 19.
– Nogués averaged 5.6 points/game and was tied for third among tournament players with 39 total points scored.
– She scored six points in the third-place clincher against Latvia, including the game’s deciding basket.
– Nogués has also competed internationally in FIBA 3×3 events at the U21 and U18 levels, and played for Spanish national teams in 5-on-5 from U12 through U15.
– Nogués’ most recently played 5-on-5 last season for CB Adareva in the LF Challenge, the second division of Spanish basketball.
