BIJAN ROBINSON, DRAKE LONDON LEAD FALCONS TO DOMINANT WIN OVER PACKERS
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Bijan Robinson ran for 194 yards and two scores and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. returned from injury to ignite Atlanta’s stagnant offense, leading the visiting Falcons to a 35-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.
Penix did not play in Atlanta’s first two games this season as he was still recovering from a torn ACL sustained last November. The third-year QB completed 18 of 25 passes for 256 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Half of those completions were to Drake London, who had nine catches for a career-high 194 yards.
Robinson, who carried 29 times and had runs of 55 and 31 yards, finished a yard short of his career high of 195 yards, set in 2025 against the Rams.
The loss prevented Green Bay (1-2) from setting a new NFL record for consecutive home-opener victories. The Packers had won 13 home openers in a row, matching the Miami Dolphins’ streak from 1976 to 1988.
Atlanta (1-2), which had scored just 16 points total in its first two games, erased an early 7-0 deficit with 27 consecutive points.
Zach Harrison blocked Trey Smack’s 47-yard field goal attempt that would have brought Green Bay even at 10-all. Penix then directed a 63-yard touchdown drive, hitting Austin Hooper with a 5-yard scoring toss to put the Falcons up by 17-7 with 59 seconds left in the half.
Green Bay’s first drive of the second half ended in the red zone on Jordan Love’s incompletion on fourth-and-1 at the Atlanta 8. The Falcons responded with a 92-yard drive, going in front 24-7 on Brian Robinson Jr.’s 7-yard run off the left side.
Penix hit London with a 68-yard pass to set up Nick Folk’s 31-yard field goal that put Atlanta in front 27-7 with just under 11 minutes left.
Love answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden to pull Green Bay within 27-14. Bijan Robinson’s 2-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion put Atlanta up 35-14.
Love completed 28 of 53 passes for 312 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, but the Packers managed just 17 yards on the ground on nine carries.
Green Bay took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter with a nine-play, 87-yard drive that was capped by Love’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Christian Watson.
Bijan Robinson set up the tying touchdown with a 55-yard run to the Green Bay 5. Two plays later, he scored from 3 yards out to make it 7-7 with 1:32 left in the first period.
Folk’s 44-yard field goal put the Falcons in front 10-7 with 4:48 left in the half.

BEARS THIRD-STRING QB CASE KEENUM PREPARES TO START AGAINST EAGLES
With Caleb Williams recovering from a strained hamstring and backup Tyson Bagent in the concussion protocol, Chicago Bears third-string quarterback Case Keenum may get the call to start Monday’s game against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles.
Should the Bears (1-1) need Keenum to step in amid a spate of injuries at the position, the 38-year-old veteran won’t blink.
“I feel very prepared,” Keenum said. “It’s what I do every week. It’s what I’ve done for a long time. I’ve backed up a long time in this league. If my name’s called, I’m excited to be out there.”
Coach Ben Johnson said he’s “not sure” of his starting QB against the Eagles (2-0). If it’s Keenum, the appearance will mark his first in nearly three seasons, when he started for the Houston Texans in Weeks 15 and 16 of 2023.
Williams was injured midway through the fourth quarter of Sunday’s soggy, 9-3 home loss to Minnesota. While Johnson said early in the week that he wouldn’t rule Williams out for Monday night, he isn’t expected to practice.
Philadelphia has notched zero takeaways through two weeks but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the team won’t press.
“We’re due,” Fangio said.
With uncertainty under center, the Bears may rely more heavily on running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, who have rushed for a combined 316 yards and four touchdowns through two weeks.
The Eagles (2-0) have less certainty in their running back room but remain confident that Saquon Barkley can play Monday.
Barkley rushed for just 9 yards on four attempts after suffering a stinger in his left arm on the first play of a narrow Week 2 victory at winless Tennessee.
Barkley said Thursday that an MRI “went well.” He was limited in that day’s practice.
Philadelphia ranks fourth in the NFL with a third-down conversion percentage of 53.1, just ahead of Chicago (51.7%).
While that success rate pleases Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, it also suggests to him that his team isn’t as effective in early downs, namely with running the ball.
“We’re close,” Mannion said. “A few little things fundamentally, just some of the smaller details that, if we attack those, it’ll really come to life for us. But the guys are bought in. I think what we’re doing, being able to stay on schedule on first and second down, allows you to call more runs.
“You never know when those are about to pop. … I feel that, moving forward, those are going to start to break through.”
Philadelphia averaged just 2.8 yards per carry at Tennessee but was rescued by the passing game, as Jalen Hurts connected with Darius Cooper for a 3-yard touchdown with nine seconds left.
Tank Bigsby led the ground game with 33 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles made a notable addition to their practice squad by signing tight end Zach Ertz, who’s expected to help as a receiver with starting tight end Dallas Goedert sidelined after sustaining a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Tennessee.
Ertz, 35, spent the first eight-plus seasons of his career with the Eagles. He suffered torn ligaments in his right knee while playing with the Washington Commanders last season and was limited to 13 games.
Philadelphia is aiming to start 3-0 or better for the fourth time in five seasons.

VETERAN DAVANTE ADAMS MAKING HUGE IMPACT AS RAMS TAKE ON BRONCOS
Davante Adams could be without prolific Rams sidekick Puka Nacua for the second straight week, but the veteran wide receiver has learned you don’t worry about things you can’t control.
Adams was a receiving machine in Week 2 and he will look for another stellar performance when Los Angeles visits the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.
Nacua (hip) has only a slight chance of playing after missing Monday night’s 28-6 victory over the visiting New York Giants. Coach Sean McVay said Wednesday that Nacua’s injury could become more serious if rest doesn’t heal it.
“It’s some of those things that can kind of be pre-hernia,” McVay said Wednesday before emphasizing that Nacua does not have a hernia. “You err on the side of caution. Usually time is the best thing that allows that thing to heal. And then once you get to a certain point, then I think you feel pretty good moving forward.”
Adams stood tall against the Giants with eight receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns. The yardage was the fourth-highest of his 13-year career and just 11 shy of his career high set in 2021 as a member of the Green Bay Packers.
“He’s an elite player,” Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford said of Adams. “He did it all for us, and he’s a guy that can do that. We understand that. We know it.”
Adams, 33, is in his second season with Los Angeles (1-1). The six-time Pro Bowler led the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions last season.
The guy who caught passes from Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay for eight seasons certainly appreciates playing with someone like Stafford. The reigning NFL Most Valuable Player threw four touchdown passes against the Giants to move into sixth place in league history with 427 career touchdown passes.
“Football is the greatest team sport that there is, and it’s a beautiful game because it takes so many things in order for things to go right,” said Adams, a three-time first-team All-Pro. “We can both (Stafford and Adams) be great players and go out there and have the right intentions every time, and it doesn’t guarantee anything for you.”
Broncos four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II is ready for the challenges that come with defending Adams.
“It’s good battles, good competition,” said Surtain, a two-time first-team All-Pro. “It’s going to be another battle on Sunday. Looking forward to it.”
Denver (1-1) got into the victory column last Sunday with a 20-13 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Quarterback Bo Nix passed for 288 yards on 31 attempts one week after having just 131 on 28 passes in a 31-10 loss to the host Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 14.
“Two different games really,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “The other one can’t get in our rear-view mirror quick enough. It’s still kind of there, but the horizon’s going to dissipate. What matters most is that second half. He played really good in the second half.”
Denver has won nine straight games against NFC teams since losing to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the 2024 season.
“I think that’s just by schedule, by chance,” Nix said. “We’ve competed against some really good teams. We’ve had some close NFC matchups. One that I remember is last year, the Eagles. They gave us a challenge, and we had to come back, and same with the Giants.”
Interestingly, the Rams have rattled off eight straight victories against AFC opponents since losing to the Miami Dolphins in Week 10 of the 2024 season.
Denver is ailing at running back after J.K. Dobbins (hip) was injured against Jacksonville and limited in practice Wednesday but was a full participant Thursday. Fellow running back RJ Harvey (hamstring) followed the same pattern, while Jonah Coleman (ankle) sat out both days. Harvey sat out against the Jaguars. Wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (foot) was limited both days.
In addition to Nacua, safety Kamren Kinchens (hamstring) and tight end Colby Parkinson (knee) were non-participants in Wednesday’s walkthrough as well as Thursday’s practice. Receiver Jordan Whittington (quadriceps) didn’t practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday.
Inside linebacker Nate Landman (shoulder) was limited both days.

MLB ROUNDUP: WHITE SOX, GUARDIANS, CUBS, PADRES WRAP UP PLAYOFF BERTHS
Miguel Vargas had two hits and two RBIs, Kyle Teel homered and David Sandlin delivered six strong innings as the visiting Chicago White Sox routed the Kansas City Royals 9-1 on Thursday to clinch an American League playoff berth.
Chicago is back in the postseason for the first time since 2021 after enduring three straight 100-loss seasons.
Fueled by an early barrage against Royals right-hander Randy Dobnak, the White Sox remained a game behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians. Chicago holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland. Whichever one of those two teams fails to win the division will wind up as the third AL wild-card team.
Sandlin (3-2) yielded one run and five hits. Dobnak (3-5) allowed six runs (four earned) and six hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Guardians 1, Red Sox 0
Angel Martinez’s second-inning home run was all visiting Cleveland needed for a win over Boston to clinch its third consecutive playoff berth.
Joey Cantillo (11-9) dominated for five shutout innings as the Guardians’ bulk reliever, yielding one hit. Hunter Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski and Cade Smith allowed a combined one hit over the final three innings to help Cleveland win its seventh game in the last eight.
The playoff-bound Red Sox fell for the fourth time in five games despite getting five innings of one-run ball from Ranger Suarez (8-5).
Cubs 2, Marlins 1
Nico Hoerner ripped a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth and Matthew Boyd tossed seven strong innings, helping host Chicago clinch a playoff berth with a victory over Miami.
Chicago’s Pete Crow-Armstrong walked to lead off the first inning and promptly stole second base to become the seventh player in major league history to record at least 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in a single season.
Seiya Suzuki belted a solo homer in the fifth inning to highlight his two-hit performance for the Cubs, who salvaged the finale of their three-game series with Miami. Chicago sits in the second NL wild-card spot, one game behind San Diego.
Padres 4, Dodgers 2
Dustin Harris drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as visiting San Diego beat Los Angeles to clinch a playoff spot for a franchise-record third consecutive season.
Yuki Matsui (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning, and Mason Miller gave up a run with two outs in the ninth before securing his 38th save. Ethan Salas and Fernando Tatis Jr. each had two hits and an RBI for the Padres.
Tyler Glasnow (5-2) fanned a season-high 11 but allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings for the Dodgers, who secured a first-round playoff bye thanks to the Atlanta Braves’ loss on Thursday. Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-5 with an RBI double.
Brewers 5, Phillies 1
Jake Bauers’ RBI single in the eighth inning plated the go-ahead run for Milwaukee, which reached the 100-win mark for the first time in franchise history with a win at Philadelphia. When the Dodgers fell to the Padres later, the Brewers clinched the top record in the major leagues.
Bauers, who went 2-for-5, singled up the middle, allowing Jackson Chourio to score from second, giving the Brewers (100-59) a 2-1 lead and starting a three-run frame.
Philadelphia remains in an NL wild-card spot, but the Phillies could not drop their magic number to clinch from two. Phillies starter Andrew Painter threw six innings of one-run ball, fanning eight. Bryce Harper went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Diamondbacks 12, Rockies 8
Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado homered in a six-run first inning and surging Arizona beat Colorado in Denver to continue its drive for a wild-card berth.
James McCann also went deep for Arizona, which moved within two games of Philadelphia for the third and final NL playoff berth. Arizona finishes the regular season in San Diego while the Phillies host Tampa Bay this weekend.
Cole Carrigg homered among his four hits, Kyle Karros and Zac Veen also went deep and had two hits for Colorado, which finished with 17 hits.
Rangers 3, Mets 1
Kumar Rocker pitched five solid innings for Texas, which salvaged the finale of a three-game series against New York in Arlington, Texas.
Josh Jung (3-for-3) hit a two-run homer in the first and Corey Seager went deep in the sixth for the Rangers, who remain tied with Houston for first place in the American League West. Rocker (6-11) allowed one run on three hits. Jordan Montgomery recorded his first save of the season.
Mets starter Zac Thornton (5-6) yielded two runs on four hits over five innings. Brett Baty extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
Astros 7, Athletics 5
Rookie Lucas Spence hit his first three career homers and drove in five runs as Houston smacked five homers while defeating the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif.
Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker added solo blasts for the Astros who remained tied for first in the AL West with the Rangers. Houston holds the tiebreaker, having gone 9-4 vs. Texas this year.
Houston reliever Miguel Ullola (2-0) fired three scoreless innings and Brayan Abreu worked 1 1/3 shutout innings for his ninth save. Zack Gelof hit two homers and Jeff McNeil drilled a three-run shot for the Athletics, who lost for the seventh time in nine games.
Yankees 6, Rays 4
Rookie George Lombard Jr. hit a tiebreaking two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning as New York overcame a four-run deficit and earned a victory over visiting Tampa Bay.
New York ace Cam Schlittler allowed two runs (one earned) in three innings in a playoff tuneup, ending the season with a 1.95 ERA. Bradley Hanner (1-0) threw two scoreless innings for his first career victory.
Junior Caminero had a pair of RBI singles for the Rays. Ian Seymour allowed one hit in five scoreless innings. Steven Matz (5-6) served up Lombard’s decisive homer.
Pirates 2, Cardinals 1
Spencer Horwitz’s sacrifice fly in the eighth drove in the go-ahead run, and Paul Skenes concluded his season with a quality start as Pittsburgh wrapped up its home schedule with a victory over St. Louis.
Skenes tossed 6 1/3 innings, struck out eight, walked two and allowed one run on three hits. His final pitch completed a strikeout of Leo Bernal, giving him 200-plus for the second straight season. Luke Weaver (4-1) escaped an inherited eighth-inning jam before Mason Montgomery recorded his 17th save.
Alec Burleson homered for the Cardinals. St. Louis (77-82) is guaranteed to finish with back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1994-95.
Reds 7, Braves 6
A two-run homer by Hector Rodriguez, one of three long balls by Cincinnati, helped the visiting Reds beat Atlanta in the rubber game of a three-game series.
Rodriguez clubbed a 423-foot homer to right field against AJ Smith-Shawver (0-3) in the sixth inning to give the Reds the lead for good. Elly De La Cruz added his 30th homer and Carlos Jorge hit his first career homer. Cincinnati reliever Connor Phillips (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Atlanta right-hander Tyler Mahle threw five innings and gave up five runs on six hits in his worst outing since being acquired from San Francisco at the trade deadline.
Angels 6, Mariners 4
Christian Moore doubled, singled and drove in three runs as Los Angeles won at Seattle.
Josh Lowe also had a single and a double and scored three times for the Angels. Los Angeles starter Grayson Rodriguez (5-8) gave up four runs on five hits over five innings. Ryan Watson pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
Julio Rodriguez homered for the Mariners, whose postseason hopes were dashed when the Rangers defeated the Mets earlier in the day. Bryan Woo (12-10) allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

LEGENDARY HOOPS ICON BOB PETTIT DIES AT 93
Basketball legend Bob Pettit, a Hall of Famer and first winner of the NBA’s MVP award, has died. He was 93.
The 11-time NBA All-Star and two-time college All-American at LSU died Wednesday in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. No cause of death was divulged.
“Dad passed away very peacefully at his home in Metairie, on Wednesday, September 23,” the Pettit family said in a statement. “He was the most amazing father. The most kind, humble and gentle soul. We are so blessed to have him in our lives and we will miss him dearly.”
Pettit, a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, was a two-time NBA MVP, a two-time scoring champion and a four-time All-Star MVP during his 11 seasons (1954-65). He also helped revolutionize the then-new power forward position and was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971.
He was Rookie of the Year for the Milwaukee Hawks in 1954-55 before the team moved to St. Louis for the final 10 seasons of Pettit’s career. He was MVP in the 1955-56 and 1958-59 seasons and averaged 26.4 points, 16.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 792 career regular-season games.
The Hawks made nine playoff appearances during his career — reaching the NBA Finals four times — and won the 1957-58 championship. Pettit was named MVP of the Finals while averaging 29.3 points and 17.0 rebounds. He became the first player to score 50 points in an NBA Finals game when he hit the mark in the clinching Game 6 victory over the Boston Celtics.
The 50 points is still tied for sixth most in NBA Finals history. Elgin Baylor holds the mark of 61, set in 1962 for the Los Angeles Lakers.
In 88 career playoff games, Pettit averaged 25.5 points and 14.8 rebounds.
Pettit averaged a career-best 31.1 points in 1961-62, finishing third behind legendary Wilt Chamberlain (50.4) as well as Walt Bellamy (31.6). He averaged a career best 20.3 rebounds in 1960-61, which was good for just third behind Chamberlain (27.2) and Bill Russell (23.9).
Pettit was one of the game’s biggest stars in an era before NBA was regularly on television. He retired at age 32, partly because of a balky knee and also due to a banking opportunity.
“The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame mourns the passing of Bob Pettit, a sleek, skilled big man who revolutionized the forward position during his career,” the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame said in a statement. “The 11-time NBA All-Star and 2-time MVP retired as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history and left an enduring legacy. He led the St. Louis Hawks to the 1958 NBA championship over the Boston Celtics. The Basketball Hall of Fame salutes this true giant of the game.”
The Hawks moved to Atlanta ahead of the 1968-69 season and the franchise paid tribute to Pettit on Thursday.
“Beyond his accolades — including 11 All-Star selections and leading the Hawks to the 1958 NBA Championship — Bob was a true ambassador for the sport and a role model for countless fans,” the team said. “We are grateful for his contributions to our franchise and to basketball history. His retired No. 9 jersey continues to hang proudly at State Farm Arena as a lasting reminder of the impact he made on our organization. We extend our deepest condolences to Bob’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”
A native of Baton Rouge, Pettit stayed home to play college basketball at LSU. He averaged 27.4 points and 14.4 rebounds in 72 games over three seasons. He was a first-team All-American in 1953-54 when he averaged 31.4 points and 17.3 rebounds.
Pettit was a second-team All-American the previous season as a junior.
Pettit’s 31.4 scoring average was a Southeastern Conference record until another LSU legend, Pete Maravich, surpassed it with a 43.8 average in 1967-68.
LSU unveiled a statue outside of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in 2016. A street in Baton Rouge, Bob Pettit Blvd., is also named after him.
After being the second overall pick in the 1954 NBA Draft by the Hawks, Pettit received a then-NBA record rookie record contract of $11,000.
“I had only $100 in the bank when I graduated from college,” Pettit recalled later, according to LSU, “and $11,000 looked like all the money in the world to me.”

UNITED STATES TAKES 3-2 LEAD ON DAY 1 OF PRESIDENTS CUP
Scottie Scheffler’s pars on the final two holes were enough to give the United States team an early boost on the first day of the Presidents Cup on Thursday outside Chicago.
That earned Scheffler and partner Sam Burns a 1-up victory against Australia’s Min Woo Lee and South Korea’s Sungjae Im in the first match at Medinah Country Club’s No. 3 course, where five four-ball matches were contested.
The U.S. side won two of the other four matches for a 3-2 lead on the International team after the first of four days of competition.
“A session win is a session win; we’re going to take it any way we can get it,” U.S. team captain Brandt Snedeker said. “So happy for Scottie and Sam to go out there in that lead match and get that big win for us to lead us off.”
The International team had stretches of momentum, so both sides had reasons to be encouraged.
“A long buildup, lots of planning, lots of strategizing, and just to get things going was a lot of fun,” International team captain Geoff Ogilvy of Australia said.
The Scheffler/Burns match was the lone encounter to go to the 18th hole. Scheffler won the 17th hole and then the sides halved No. 18.
Scheffler has struggled in international competition despite being part of two winning Presidents Cup teams. His individual record at the Presidents Cup was 3-5-1 entering this week.
“Just doing my best to compete on each and every shot,” Scheffler said. “That was really our motto today.”
Lee/Im took the lead on No. 13 before Burns converted on the next hole with a significant approach shot that led to a birdie to square that match.
“I felt like that was really a big moment for us as a team, and he stepped up when we needed him to,” Scheffler said.
Ogilvy said he was fine with the performance from Lee and Im, validating his choice for using that pairing in that position.
“It was a good decision, and well done to Scottie and Sam for beating them,” Ogilvy said.
Justin Thomas and rookie Jackson Koivun won 4 and 3 against Canada’s Corey Conners and Colombia’s Nico Echavarria, and Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa were 3-and-2 winners against New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and Australia’s Adam Scott.
The Japanese pair of Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune defeated Cameron Young and Xander Schauffele, 3 and 1.
The South Korean tandem of Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim topped Chris Gotterup and Patrick Cantlay, 3 and 2.
The Thomas/Koivun victory was clutch for the U.S. as both golfers were captain’s picks by Snedeker. Koivun’s birdies on Nos. 3 and 6 won those holes. Thomas was the closer with birdies on Nos. 14 and 15.
“It was cool to watch him do his thing out there and show up in some pretty big moments,” Thomas said.

After they went the distance to earn a point in the opening match of the Presidents Cup, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and longtime friend Sam Burns will lead off Day 2 of the competition for the United States team on Friday.
Scheffler and Burns will begin the first foursomes (alternate) session of the week against Canadians Corey Conners and Nick Taylor. They beat Australia’s Min Woo Lee and South Korea’s Sungjae Im 1 up on Thursday, with Scheffler converting all-important pars on the final two holes to take the lead and finalize the match.
The U.S. leads the International team 3-2 after one session of four-ball (best ball) at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Next comes the more difficult of the two formats, and the one that has given the U.S. fits in recent Ryder Cups against Team Europe.
“I was kind of expecting the unexpected at some point today. But I’m super proud of the guys,” U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker said. “I was super proud of the way they hung in there, super proud of Scottie and Sam getting that last point there for us.”
After Scheffler and Burns, Im and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama will face Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman, the two players who sat out the opening session for the U.S.
The third match keeps Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa together to face Lee and New Zealand’s Ryan Fox. Clark and Morikawa were 3-and-2 winners against Fox and Australian Adam Scott on Thursday. The match will feature the reigning U.S. Open winner (Clark) and the defending Open champion (Fox).
Scott and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout will face Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, and in the final match, the longtime Ryder Cup tandem of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele will reunite for the U.S. against South Korea’s Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim. The Kims won a point together Thursday, 3 and 2 over Cantlay and Chris Gotterup.
The United States has won the past 10 Presidents Cups and only needs 12 more points (15 total) to retain. The competition lasts four days, with two sessions on Saturday before 12 singles matches Sunday.

RITTER AT HERITAGE CHRISTIAN…Ritter lost to Lutheran 28-14 last Friday giving up 14 fourth quarter points. Ritter has a balanced attack led by QB Jayden Graham and RB Renaldo Thomas. Meanwhile Heritage Christian continues to struggle after dropping a 50-6 contest to Wes-Del last Friday. The Eagles are 0-5, and have yet to throw a touchdown pass this season. They average less than 171 yards of total offense per game.

NORTHEASTERN AT LAPEL…The Bulldogs are 5-0 after beating New Castle last week 42-13. Like most good football teams, Lapel has a balanced offensive attack led by QB Max Lockhart and RB Jack Miller. The Knights will need the safe offensive output they had last week in their 56-42 shootout over Centerville. Northeastern throws the ball better than they run thanks to QB Jarrett Leitner. Now the defense will need to step up if they plan on beating the Bulldogs.

WESTFIELD 5-0 AT BROWNSBURG 5-0…This will be the game of the year at this point. Both teams 5-0, both teams are loaded on both sides of the football, and they know each other very well. Brownsburg is #1 in 6A, Westfield is #2. The Rocks have lost to Brownsburg in the state 6A title game for the past two seasons including last year’s 38-31 final. The Bulldogs have won six straight from the Rocks. Westfield is coming off a 36-7 win over HSE, while Brownsburg rolled at Fishers 49-10. The Bulldogs are averaging 45 ppg. Westfield is scoring at a 40.8 ppg clip. Both defenses are solid. This may come down to whomever takes care of the football better.

CASTLE 4-1 AT EVEANSVILLE REITZ 5-0…The Knights are 4-1 after beating Boonville on the road 34-6. Evansville Reitz is rolling at 5-0 after beating Evansville Central 61-13. The Panthers have a high octane offense averaging over 50 ppg. Reitz is the favorite after dropping last year’s regular season game at Castle 28-25.

CROWN POINT 5-0 AT VALPO 4-1….The Bulldogs are rolling thanks in part to their stiff defense. They are giving up less than 10 ppg. Crown Point continues to be a favorite in 6A football and are coming off a 55-12 win over Portage. The Vikings are 4-1 following a tough 21-14 win over Chesterton. It may not be much of an advantage but the Vikings are happy to be at home this week. Crown Point is a two touchdown favorite.

DANVILLE 5-0 AT YORKTOWN 4-1…The Warriors are rolling at 5-0 after winning at Lebanon last week 28-14. QB Carter Ward has a completion rate of 79%, with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. The ground attack averages over 247 yards per game led by Daiton Hood (104.2). Defensively the Warriors have nine QB sacks, 38 tackles for loss, and are giving up less than two touchdowns per game. Yorktown is the real deal coming in at 4-1 (the lone loss to New Pal 42-28). QB Sam Tokar is having a solid season already surpassing the 1,000 yard mark to go alone with 11 TD passes. His favorite targets are Kaden Crumes, and Cooper Luzadder (Combined 37 receptions and 7 TD’s). The Tigers are also very good defensively allowing under 14 ppg. Yorktown is ranked 9th in 4A.

DECATUR CENTRAL 4-1 AT PLAINFIELD 4-1…Decatur Central is rolling after a 31-6 loss to open the season against Avon. The Hawks have allowed just 27 points in its four game winning streak. Keep an eye on Sophomore QB Ezekiel Hester (146.4 ypg passing, 60.8 rushing), and RB Hunter Harvey (113.6). The Quakers also lost their season opener against Franklin Central. The four game winning streak included road wins at Harrison, Perry Meridian, and Bloomington North. QB Bryce Sebanc is one of the leaders in the state in most all categories including completions percentage (68%), yards per game (172.3), touchdowns (12), and fewest interceptions (1). The Quakers can also run the football at 134.4 ypg.

ELKHART 4-1 AT SB ST. JOSEPH 5-0….The Lions are 4-1 thanks to a high powered offense (40.4ppg). QB Micah Jarrell is a dual threat (140.4 yards passing per game, 4 rushing touchdowns). Keep an eye on WR Tamichael Brown (25.7 yards per reception). The Huskies are 5-0 and ranked 5th in 4A. They average 207.2 passing yards per game, and 125.8 yards on the ground. But, it’s their defense that makes them impressive, allowing just 6.2 ppg.

GIBSON SOUTHERN 4-1 AT HERITAGE HILLS 4-1…Like many teams, Gibson Southern lost their opening game (Floyd Central), but have rolled since then. This will be just their second road game of the season and that will make this one a challenge. The Titans love to throw the football with QB Caden Rochleau averaging 294.4 ypg to go along with 14 TD’s. And they can run the football (179.8 ypg). The Patriots can also score (49.2 ppg), and play defense (8.4 ypg). In fact, Heritage Hills has three straight shutouts (63-0 over Princeton, 47-0 at Southridge, 59-0 at Washington. Heritage Hills also has a very effective QB in Tyce Winchell (165.8 ypg and 13 TD’s). Running the football hasn’t been a issue either (224.0 ypg, 19 TD’s).

GRIFFITH 5-0 AT RENSSELAER CENTRAL 5-0…Two ranked teams are ready to do battle in week six. Griffith is ranked 10th in 3A, Rensselaer Central in 10th in 2A. The Panthers are balanced on offense (183 yards passing, 291.4 rushing). RB Desmond Neylon averages 225.4 ypg, and has scored 17 TD’s. Griffith is currently on a three game road trip. Meanwhile, the Bombers are 5-0 following a 49-0 win over Frontier. Running the football is their key to their success through the first five games (274.2 ypg). RB Landon Musch will be the workhorse again averaging 149.2 ypg and scoring 15 TD’s.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. returned to practice in a limited capacity Thursday. Ward sustained a groin injury in Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs and missed Wednesday’s practice.
Wide receiver Ashton Dulin remained out of practice Thursday as he continues to work through an ankle injury. Dulin has not practiced since the Friday before Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens. Defensive tackle Grover Stewart had a veteran rest day and did not participate.
Once again, cornerback Sauce Garnder (rib), guard Matt Goncalves (foot) and wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (shoulder) were full participants. Wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back Jonathan Taylor fully returned after their rest day Wednesday.

MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 24, 2026) — The Indiana Fever (28-16) fell to the Minnesota Lynx in the team’s final regular season game of the 2026 season. The Fever will begin the postseason on Sunday, Sept. 27, with their opponent and further details to be determined following the night’s remaining games. Locked in at the No. 6 seed, the Fever will face the No. 3 seed, either the Golden State Valkyries or the Las Vegas Aces, in the First Round.
Indiana found themselves facing a 19-point deficit in the first quarter, with the Lynx outshooting the Fever 32-13. The Lynx expanded their lead in the second quarter, in front 62-32 at the halftime break. The Fever were unable to overcome the Lynx’s lead through the third and fourth quarter, resulting in the road loss.

The Fever finish the 2026 regular season as the highest scoring offense in WNBA history, recording 96.0 points per game, surpassing the previous record of 93.9 points per game set by the Phoenix Mercury in 2010.
Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark finished the season becoming the second pair of teammates in WNBA history to average 20+ points per game, joining Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter who combined for 45.3 points per game, while Clark and Mitchell combined for 47.0, the highest points per game by a duo in league history.
The Fever finished the season with 20 100+ point games, setting a new league record for most in a single season.

Kelsey Mitchell averaged 24.7 points on the season, setting a new franchise record for points per game, while finishing with the fourth highest points per game average in WNBA history.
Kelsey Mitchell finishes 2026 setting new league records for most points in a season (1,086), three pointers in a season (135), 10+ point games in a season (44) and 20+ point games in a season (35).
Kelsey Mitchell’s 20+ point scoring streak came to an end in the regular season finale – a new league record of 27-straight games, with Mitchell finishing with 10 points in her 22 first-half minutes.
With her three-pointer made at 0:27 in the second quarter, Kelsey Mitchell set a WNBA record for most three pointers in a single season, passing Rhyne Howard (134). Mitchell finished the night with two three pointers, bringing her 2026 season total to 135.

INDIANA SWIMMING
WESTMONT, Ill. – No. 2/5 opened the College Swimming League era with a statement performance, outscoring No. 12/8 Louisville, No. 8/6 Michigan and No. 13/11 Ohio State in the tournament’s inaugural match Thursday (Sept. 24) night inside the FMC Natatorium.
The Hoosier men and women combined to win 16 of 30 events and totaled 575.5 points, 124 points better than second-place Louisville (451.5). Michigan came third (420.5), followed by Ohio State (250.5). Seven different Hoosiers won events in their CSL debuts, and IU’s superstar second-years Alex Shackell and Liberty Clark led the team with three wins apiece.
The Hoosier women flexed their toughness and endurance, winning both skins events – an elimination-style sprint competition in which athletes race back-to-back rounds until two athletes/teams remain for a final head-to-head showdown. Shackell won the individual skins competition, outlasting her opponents through four rounds of 50-yard butterfly and going times of 23.44, 23.63, 23.57 and 23.22 in her races. She then swam four fly splits of the 200-yard medley “super skins,” as she, Miranda Grana, Anita Bottazzo and Kristina Paegle won the final event of the night.
Shackell also swept the individual butterfly events, rounding out a perfect meet.
Clark swept the freestyle events, dropping times of 21.65 in the 50 free, 46.60 in the 100 free and 1:43.21 in the 200 free. With her 100-yard freestyle time, the second-year swimmer now owns the top 10 performances in program history.
Raekwon Noel and Miranda Grana worked together to sweep the backstroke events. Grana won the College Swimming League’s first race with a 1:49.85 in the 200-yard backstroke. She won the 100 back at the touch, out-splitting Michigan’s Lexi Greenhawt in the last 50 yards.
The 2026 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, Josh Bey, captured wins in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200 IM. Alexei Avakov made it a men’s breaststroke sweep with his victory in the 100-yard event, and transfer Anita Bottazzo got her first win as a Hoosier in the women’s 100 breast.

Indiana will swim its Cream and Crimson exhibition meet on October 2 before hosting Texas and Northwestern October 9 in its first true dual meet(s) of the 2026-27 season. The Hoosiers return to CSL action October 16 in Match 5 of the series, where they’ll face Cal, NC State and Stanford.

With the loss, the Hoosiers hold a 4-5-1 record overall and 1-3-0 in conference play.

In the 26th minute, Grace Hamm took a shot at the bottom center of the net, but it was saved by the Minnesota Goalkeeper.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Wilkinson Hall has been one of the toughest places to play in the conference over the last five seasons. When Big Ten season opens up, the volume in the building kicks up a notch. The arena was at its finest on Thursday (Sept. 24) evening as the 18th-ranked Indiana volleyball team (8-2, 1-0 B1G) opened league action with a sweep (27-25, 25-19, 25-21) of UCLA (9-3, 0-1 B1G) in Bloomington.
Head coach Steve Aird challenged his defense in practice over the last three days and it stepped up in a big way. The Bruins were held to a season low in hitting percentage (.150) as IU’s block and service pressure disrupted their flow the entire night. Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry had a hand in six of IU’s nine blocks. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager and second-year libero Hannah Leftridge shared the lead with 11 digs.
Even as the offense struggled to find a rhythm against the big UCLA block, IU’s attackers found big points when they needed it most. Jager led the team with 13 kills while third-year opposite hitter Ella Boersema chipped in 10 kills of her own. First-year outside hitter Sara Snowbarger had nine kills and hit perfect (4-4) in the final set. IU ended the night with a .238 hitting percentage behind 36 assists from second-year setter Teodora Krickovic.
The Hoosiers will welcome Maryland on Saturday (Sept. 26) evening with the chance to start 2-0 in the Big Ten in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1984-85. First serve from Wilkinson Hall is set for 7 p.m. as IU tries to win its sixth-straight contest in the all-time series against the Terrapins. All fans are encouraged to wear purple as part of IU’s Alz Together night in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
How it Happened
• IU’s defense and service pressure was stifling all night as UCLA tried to find an offensive system that worked. No one had double-digit kills for the Bruins as they mustered just 35 kills in three sets. IU scored big points via the block (9.0) and the serve (7).
• A big run of serve from second-year setter Teodora Krickovic helped turn the momentum in set one as IU faced a pair of set points. A kill and a block from fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry tied the opening frame at 24-all. • Sophomore outside hitter Jaidyn Jager didn’t have her cleanest offensive night but came up with 13 important kills to lead the way for the Hoosiers. Meanwhile, with Purdue’s extended winning streak, the Boilermakers now hold the longest mark in the Big Ten at 18 sets (six sweeps) and the program’s second-longest run this century. In total, Purdue has posted 18 consecutive set sweeps five times since 1982 (record: 7 sweeps, 21 sets).
Grace Heaney was off to a hot start in the first set, notching a .636 clip with eight kills on 11 total attacks before finishing the match with her second double-double of the season behind 10 kills and 11 digs.
Ryan McAleer recorded 17 digs in the match (second-highest mark this season), along with her first kill of the season in an SC Top-10-worthy play. Freshman MaryKate Scheumann also hit double-digit digs against the Terrapins, recording 10.
The Boilermaker defense held the Terrapins to a .115 hitting percentage in the match, and a .038 hitting percentage in the third set. The Boilers only allowed nine points from the Terrapins while registering a perfect 100% sideout in the final frame.
Kate Hansen tied her season high of blocks with six, including three solo stuffs, a season-high.
Freshman Addy Tindall continued her impressive rookie campaign by hitting .353 with 15 kills to lead the team.
Setter Taylor Anderson was on the verge of a triple-double in the match, dishing out 33 assists, on top of seven digs and an errorless six kills on eight attacks (.750%). Anderson’s sound setting led the offense to start and end the match hitting above .400% (Set 1: .414% and Set 3: .462%).
In the last six seasons, Purdue is 5-1 in Big Ten season opener matches.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue scored three unanswered goals to defeat Illinois, 3-0, Thursday night at Folk Field. The Boilers scored the most goals against the Fighting Illini since defeating Illinois 3-1 in 2015.
The Boilermakers improved to 9-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in Big Ten play with the shutout victory, already tying their number of Big Ten wins from a season ago. The Boilers have scored at least three goals in seven matches this year, which is the first time since the 2007 Big Ten Championship squad. With their 42 goals, the Boilers now have the third-most in a season in program history.
Purdue opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Jaiden Anderson outran five Illini to find the back of the net. Irene Campo provided the assist on Anderson’s ninth goal of the season, giving the Boilermakers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Boilermakers added to their lead early in the second half. McKenzie Carle scored in the 53rd minute with Rosa Maalouf and Megan Santa Cruz credited with assists, to make it 2-0. Carle struck again just over four minutes later, scoring at 56:32 off an assist from Anderson for her second goal of the night and seventh of the season. This also marked Carle’s third brace of the season, putting her just three behind her 10 goals from 2025.
Carle led Purdue with two goals on two shots, while Anderson finished with a goal, an assist and four shots. Anderson’s nine goals lead the Boilermakers this season.
Wolf played all 90 minutes and made three saves to earn her ninth victory of the season.

Men’s Notes
• At a competitive season-opener in Terre Haute, Nerius White paced the men’s side with his 51st-place finish in the 8k. His 24:30 was the second-best time he has run in his career.
• Nate Assa was the second Boilermaker to finish at the opener in 91st with a 24:54.2. It was the sophomore’s fifth collegiate 8k and his best time by 10.7 seconds.
• Douglas Buckeridge rounded out Purdue’s top three in 124th (25:13.2). He will continue to find his form on Friday after three consecutive Great Lakes All-Region campaigns.
Women’s Notes
• Lauren Pegher was Purdue’s top finisher on the women’s side at the opener in 80th. She ran 21:34.6 to top her previous personal best in a 6k race by 2.4 seconds.
• Katherine Valentine opener her sophomore season in 92nd in 21:47.5 that broke her previous personal best by 52.8 seconds. She improved her placement throughout the entirety of the race.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER
DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0-6, 2-0-1) battled to the very end as they finished with a 1-1 draw on the road against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils (6-1-2, 1-1-1) on Thursday night.
While it was a scoreless first half, the Irish were on the board in the 49th minute to take the 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils, however, would tie it up shortly after as they found the equalizer in the 58th minute to make it 1-all. Despite persistent efforts from both teams and consistent chances for the Irish, it would result in a draw.
Junior forward Lily Joseph continues to lead the Irish in scoring this season as she scored her sixth goal of the season in the 1-1 draw.
Junior goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica, who is this week’s ACC Goalkeeper of the Week, finished the night with five saves as she leads the conference with 4.57 saves per game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish were aggressive from the start with some early looks in the first five minutes of play. Kate Kemmerley had the first opportunity for the Irish in the 4th minute as she fired it from the penalty arc, but missed just high of the crossbar. Less than a minute later, an Ellie Hodsden header off of a Notre Dame corner kick would also land just above the crossbar.
One of the best looks of the half came from Annabelle Chukwu, who had a shot inside the box in the 34th minute as she fired it past the diving Blue Devil goalkeeper. However, her shot would be saved by a Duke defender on the backside to keep it at a scoreless 0-0 with 10:30 remaining in the half.
The first half battle finished in a scoreless 45 minutes of play with the Irish outshooting Duke 6-5 and Duke having a 3-2 edge on corner kicks over the Irish.
Notre Dame would go on to outshoot Duke 15-7 in the second half, with several great looks from the Irish.
One of those great looks would find the back of the net as the Irish scored the first goal of the night in the 49th minute.
Joseph worked her way up the midfield on the pass from Izzy Engle, battling one-on-one until she was able to lose the Duke defender as she entered the box. As the Duke goalkeeper came off their line, Joseph’s right-footed touch to the far post would go past the keeper and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils would level the score less than 10 minutes later as they found the equalizer in the 58th minute to make it 1-all.
Notre Dame had a string of opportunities to regain the lead, but the first chance came in the 60th minute as DeMartino sent it into the box and connected on the Engle header. The shot, however, would hit the post and keep it at an even 1-1.
The Irish remained aggressive as Kersh fired it from inside the box shortly after in the 62nd minute for another shot on goal, but resulted in a Blue Devil save.
In the 66th minute, a running Chukwu header would deflect off the crossbar for another close chance for the Irish. Soon after on a free kick in the 66th minute, Canada fired the shot from roughly 30 yards out, but would bounce straight off the crossbar.
In the 82nd minute, Chukwu would find the back of the net off the Notre Dame cornerkick, but it resulted in a no goal as a Notre Dame foul was called.
Despite several chances from both teams in the final minutes, the top-15 matchup would result in a 1-1 draw in Durham.

The Irish lead the overall series agaisnt the Orange with an impressive series record of 15-5-2 and 7-2-1 when playing the Orange at home.
Notre Dame and Syracuse haven’t faced one another since Oct. 5, 2024, where the Irish fell 1-2 on the road at Syracuse. The Irish are 3-2 in the last fie matchups against the Orange.
#20 IRISH TAKE DOWN #1 STANFORD ON THE ROAD
• The No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-1-2, 2-0-0) battled to a gritty 3-1 victory at No. 1 Stanford (7-1-1, 0-1-1) on Sunday evening. The Irish advanced to a perfect 2-0 in the ACC with impressive wins at No. 17 Clemson and at No. 1 Stanford to start conference play.
• This is just Notre Dame’s third win over a top-ranked team in program history, as the Irish did it in impressive fashion on the road late Sunday night.
• This was Coach Riley’s first win over a No. 1 (he was 0-1 vs. the top team, a 2020 ACC Semifinal loss to Pitt).
• Notre Dame’s three goals at Stanford is the first time the Cardinal have allowed three goals in a match since losing 3-1 to UCLA on September 28, 2023. It is also the first regular-season loss at home for Stanford since Nov. 1, 2024.
• Senior Nolan Spicer, senior Nico Bartlett, and freshman Tristan Tropeano each scored a goal for the Irish as senior Jack Flanagan and junior Stevie Dunphy each recorded an assist in the win.

KELLY NAMED ACC CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Announced by the league office on Tuesday, junior goalkeeper Blake Kelly has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week. This is his second ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor so far this season.
• Kelly helped guide the Irish a perfect 2-0 week, which included taking down No.1 Stanford on the road in an impressive 3-1 win and a 4-0 win over Detroit Mercy for his second clean sheet of the season.
• Kelly recorded 11 saves and a .917 save percentage on the week, allowing just one goal across the pair of matches.
• The junior goalkeeper finished with a stellar performance against the top-ranked Cardinal as he recorded a career-best 10 saves, including a crucial save on a Stanford penalty kick in the 70th minute.
• He leads the ACC with a .794 save percentage and 3.86 saves per game, and is also third in the ACC with 27 saves this season.
2026 CAPTAINS
• McFarland Family Men’s Head Soccer Coach Chad Riley announced that senior midfielder Nolan Spicer, junior goalkeeper Blake Kelly, and senior midfielder Leo Brummell will serve as captains of the 2026 Notre Dame men’s soccer program this year.
• Spicer was a 2025 All-ACC Third Team honoree as the midfielder led the Irish in assists with seven (career high) and was tied for seventh in the ACC in total assists last season. He was also second on the team in points (11) off two goals and seven assists.
• Kelly started in all 20 matches for the Irish last season where he totaled 71 saves, allowing 25 goals for a .740 save percentage on the season. He finished the season with six clean sheets and recorded five or more saves in seven matches.
• Brummell is a senior midfielder, joining the Irish roster in the spring of 2025 as he now serves a captain in the 2026 season.
THE CHAD RILEY ERA
• McFarland Family Head Men’s Soccer Coach Chad Riley is in his eighth season in charge of the Notre Dame men’s soccer program in 2025.
• Riley became the first head coach in program history to lead the Fighting Irish to two College Cup appearances, coming during the 2021 and 2023 seasons.

NOTRE DAME VOLLEYBALL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Following back-to-back sweeps last weekend, the Notre Dame volleyball team begins conference play with a pair of road matches, taking on Boston College on Friday, September 25th at 1 p.m. before heading to Syracuse Sunday, September 27th at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
The Irish closed out non-conference play last weekend against Eastern Illinois in a rare home-and-home series. It was the first time the two teams faced off in history.
Friday marks the 30th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Boston College. The Irish lead the series 24-5 overall and have won 11 of the last 12 matchups.
Notre Dame holds a 30-11 record over Syracuse. The 30 wins are the most against a single opponent in program history. The Irish will look to win their first game in Syracuse since 2022.
Maya Evens continues to build off a strong start to her sophomore season. Her 4.43 digs per set are ranked second in the ACC this season. In the win Sunday over the Panthers, Evens totaled 20 digs in just three sets, the most by a player in the conference in a three set match this season.
Defensively, the Irish were strong at the net against Eastern Illinois. They recorded a season-high 16 blocks in the sweep on Sunday, led by Anna Bjork’s 10, which tied her career high.
Last season, Notre Dame posted nine wins in ACC play under head coach Salima Rockwell last season, the best since she took over in 2022.

BUTLER MEN’S GOLF
The Bulldogs will look to carry momentum from their season-opening second-place finish into this weekend’s Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Butler freshman Nicholas Brooks was named the BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week last week. In his collegiate debut, Brooks earned co-medalist honors at the 2026 RedHawk Intercollegiate, hosted by Miami (Ohio) at Pittsburgh Field Club. Brooks posted a 54-hole total of 204 (-9). Over the three rounds, he had 10 birdies against a single bogey. Brooks earned co-medalist honors alongside Robert Burns of Oakland.
This week’s lineup will feature freshman Nick Vilela making his collegiate debut as an individual, while Brooks will occupy the first spot following his performance last week. Logan Sutto and Luke Kruger will occupy the second and third spots, respectively, with Johnny Leaman and Jacob Tarkany rounding out the lineup.
The event, hosted by Ball State, is scheduled for 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday. Shotgun starts are slated for 9 a.m. each day. The tournament will be held at Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Indiana.
The Bulldogs are joined in the field by host Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia State, Howard, IU Indianapolis, Loyola Chicago, Northern Kentucky, Purdue Fort Wayne, Evansville and Wright State. Purdue will also send individuals to the tournament.
Butler last competed in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational last season, finishing second overall. Sutto led the Bulldogs, finishing 10th individually with a 54-hole score of five-under 205.

Nine different Bulldogs registered an assist in the match. Cecelia Simion and Carlson each had a pair, and Gumm, Sarah Monnin, Emma Hamelmann, Lily Kiliski, Isabella Ayau, Kylie Secoda, and Elsa Maurer each added one.
Career firsts in the match: Gumm’s brace, Sizemore’s goal, and an assist for Simion, Monnin, Hamelmann, Secoda, and Maurer.

The seven goals scored by Butler were the most since the 2022 season when the Bulldogs beat Wright State, 7-0.
Four first-half goals were scored in the short span of 4 minutes and 18 seconds, all within the first 13 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs notched the first two, about two minutes apart, but the Leathernecks quickly responded to draw within one. Butler then returned the favor, and the 3-1 lead for the Bulldogs held until the break.
The four-game winning streak for Butler is its longest since the 2021 season when the Bulldogs rattled off nine straight.

The Butler football team will open Pioneer Football League action on Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Valparaiso to take on the Beacons in the battle for the Hoosier Helmet. Last season, Butler defeated Valpo 27-20 in the final regular-season game of the year, securing the Hoosier Helmet for the fourth consecutive year.
Last week, Butler secured its ninth consecutive homecoming victory with a 47-20 win over Chicago State. Gabe Passini threw for three touchdowns and 109 yards and added a score on the ground. Desmin Jackson, Sam Manna, Nick Munson, Drew Sullivan and Michael Nix all scored touchdowns in the game. Jackson scored his fourth touchdown in as many games and posted a career-high 164 yards on the ground.
Steven Stephany had another fantastic week for the Bulldogs. On special teams, Stephany blocked a punt and a point-after attempt and added two tackles. Tommy Diamond led the BU defense with 10 tackles, half a tackle for loss and one pass breakup.
THE SERIES: Butler is 55-30 all-time against Valparaiso dating back to 1927. Butler and Valpo have played every year since 1951, and Butler has won the last four meetings. Since the Hoosier Helmet was introduced in 2006, Butler has won 11 of the 20 games played.

Passini is ranked 33rd nationally and second in the PFL in completion percentage, completing 63.5% of his passes.
Michael Dellumo ranks 24th nationally in average kickoff return yardage, averaging 24.5 yards per return.
The Bulldogs are 21-6 when playing at the Sellick Bowl since the beginning of the 2022 season.
Butler returns all five starting offensive linemen from last year’s team that ranked 43rd nationally and third in the PFL in rushing offense with 167.4 yards per game. Butler’s O-line allowed only 15 sacks a year ago, a mark that ranked first in the PFL and 19th nationally.
Charles Mackley, Luke Green and Mason Armstrong represented Butler on the 2026 Preseason All-PFL Team.

The Hoyas finished 14-15 overall in 2025, including a 7-9 record in the BIG EAST. Currently, the Hoyas are 8-3 overall. Kamry Lee Caracii leads the Hoyas in kills with 116 to her credit. Juleigh Urbina leads the Hoyas in assists with 321. Bella McGirr leads the Hoyas in digs with 96.

IU INDY WOMEN’S SOCCER
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis women’s soccer team yielded three first half goals and were unable to comeback against Wright State on Thursday night (Sept. 24) in a 3-1 defeat. The Jaguars dominated the second half, but only found the back of the net once, doing so in the closing minutes.
Sophomore Maci Sammons netted her second goal of the season off assists from Madeline Chappa and Keilah Muldrow in the game’s 78th minute. Muldrow was consistently a threat, finishing with four shot attempts as the Jaguars closed with a 15-14 shot advantage, but put just three on target.
“Oh, we got after them. We said at halftime that we weren’t satisfied. We literally gave them three (first half) goals,” head coach Angela Berry White said. “We had a game plan, we knew what they were gonna try to do, and they did it.
“In the second half, we just needed to create opportunities and we had a couple really nice ones, and obviously we put that one away. You have to create the shots; you have to create those moments and that’s what we wanted to do in the second half. That was a good plus for us.”
WSU (4-5-1, 2-0 HL) went in front in the sixth minute when Olivia Stroud got loose on the doorstep after a ball came in from the right side from Ruby Dunlevy. Stroud was able to angle a shot past IU Indy goalkeeper Gwen Eiler in front of a raucous IU Indy student contingent for the game’s first goal. In the 27th minute, Taliah Pellizzari scored off an assist from Dunlevy to double their lead.
The Raiders added a third goal in the 43rd minute when Makenzie Chinn’s shot deflected off an IU Indy goalkeeper and inside the far post for an insurance tally.
The Jaguars (2-6-2, 0-2 HL) were the aggressors after halftime, creating chances with a steady dose of Muldrow and Caroline Kelley in the attack. It wasn’t until Chappa’s neat ball into Muldrow in the 78th minute that setup Sammons that the Jaguars were able to break up the shutout.
The Jaguars will continue the homestand on Sunday (Sept. 27) when they host Northern Kentucky at 1:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.

IU INDY MEN’S GOLF
MUNCIE, Ind. – The IU Indianapolis men’s golf team will be back in action this weekend when the Jaguars compete in Ball State’s Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club. The Jaguars will play 54 holes spread over two days, including two rounds of continuous play on Saturday (Sept. 26). Play will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday.
The Jaguars had a strong start to the fall slate at the Bryan National Collegiate, finishing fifth of 13 teams with a 54-hole 865. Junior Keaton Parmley led the way at 2-under 212 and senior Brady Schier shot even par 216. The Jaguars’ opening round, 2-under 286 was fueled by Schier’s 5-under 67 while both Parmley and Jack Scudder shot even par 72.
Head coach Jamie Broce’s team carded 856 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational last season while senior Titus Boswell tied for third overall at 9-under 201 (70-65-66). Scudder tied for 31st overall while playing as an individual at 3-over 213 (72-71-70).
THE COURSE
Delaware Country Club is known as East Central Indiana’s oldest and finest private golf course. The signature No. 18 is a challenging par-4 that requires a long approach shot over water into a small, well protected green.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL
MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State travels to Kent, Ohio, this Saturday, to face Mid-American Conference rival Kent State and open the Cardinals’ 52nd season in the MAC. The Cardinals have won four straight meetings in the series with Kent State, and boast a .758 win percentage against the Golden Flashes — Ball State’s largest against any MAC opponent.
— The Cardinals have won four straight in the series with Kent State, and six of the past seven meetings. Ball State has also won 11 of 16 matchups at Dix Stadium. But despite Ball State’s recent success in the series, six of the past eight encounters have been decided by 7 points or less — including a 37-35 win in Ball State’s last visit to Kent, and a 17-13 win last year at Scheumann Stadium.
— Ball State fell 51-15 at Liberty last week in a game that was wrought with 11 Cardinals penalties to mark the second straight game Ball State was bit by penalty flags. Last year, in head coach Mike Uremovich’s first season, the Cardinals took pride in limiting yellow hankies, ranking among MAC and FBS leaders for fewest flags and fewest penalty yards.
— Ball State drove 75 yards on nine plays for its first score at Liberty last week, for what was the Cardinals’ longest offensive series of the season. From that point, however, Ball State managed just 184 yards in total offense and was flagged seven times for 61 yards in penalties. TJ Horton’s 25-yard run sparked the Cardinals’ first scoring drive and was Ball State’s longest play from the scrimmage all day. Horton capped the drive with a two-yard scoring run, the first of his two TDs against the Flames. He finished the day with eight carries for 79 yards (9.9 yards per carry).
— Defensively, safety Sterling Smith tallied a career-high nine tackles against the Flames, while adding a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. But for a second-quarter punt and a third-period fumble recovery by Ball State nose tackle Ameir Glenn, Liberty scored points on 8 of 10 possessions against the Cardinals.
WHAT A WIN MEANS:
— Ball State will win on the road for the first time in the Mike Uremovich Era. It would mark the Cardinals’ first road win since Oct. 12, 2024 at Kent State (37-35).
— Ball State will win its MAC opener for the second straight season, yet just the third time since 2019. Ball State upended defending MAC champion Ohio in last year’s MAC kickoff, 20-14 in Muncie. The Cardinals dropped MAC openers in five consecutive seasons from 2020 to 2024.

MUNCIE. IND. – – All nine members of the Ball State men’s golf team will be in action this weekend when the Cardinals host the annual Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club.
The two-day event features 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday on the par 70, 6,624-yard course. Play on both competitive days will begin at 9 a.m. and feature shotgun starts.
Ball State turned in a record-breaking performance on its way to a second straight Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational team title last season, tying or establishing program records for 18-hole (-14 / 266 in round one), 36-hole (-24 / 536) and 54-hole (-27 / 813) scoring.
In addition, sophomore Luke Johnston returns as the event’s individual champion after winning in a four-hole playoff and turning in a program-record 54-hole score of -12 (198). Johnston also registered the program record for 36-hole scoring by shooting -11 (129) over his first two rounds.
About the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational:
Ball State’s nearly annual home event is named in honor of Earl Yestingsmeier, the esteemed long-time men’s golf coach and sports information director at Ball State University, passed away on January 9, 2014. He was 80 years old.
Yestingsmeier coached the Ball State men’s golf program for 36 years until his retirement in 1998, spending 31 of those years in a dual role as the university’s sports information director.
As a coach, Yestingsmeier led the Cardinals to 107 tournament titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. For his success, he was enshrined in the Ball State Athletics, Golf Coaches Association and Indiana Golf halls of fame.
A four-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, Yestingsmeier’s teams won six league titles in his career. He guided the Cardinals from their days in the Indiana Collegiate Conference into the Midwestern Conference and eventually into the MAC in the 1970s.

SCOUTING BALL STATE:
• Despite suffering a pair of losses to Power Four opponents last week, the Ball State women’s volleyball team still received three votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll released Monday (Sept. 21) … The Cardinals received votes for the first time since the first regular season poll of the 2022 season on Sept. 7, earning six votes … Ball State gained momentum after going 3-0 at the Campbell Invitational, jumping up to 24 votes in the Sept. 14 poll.
• A three-time MAC Defensive Player of the Week so far this season, Ball State junior libero Sophie Ledbetter enters league play ranked first in the MAC and 35th nationally with a 4.53 digs-per-set average … Her 181 total digs, including a season-high 26 digs at Notre Dame (Aug. 28) and versus Furman (Sept. 12), are third among all MAC players and 69th nationally.
• Thanks in part to Sophie Ledbetter’s strong play in the backcourt, the Ball State defense enters the week ranked second in the MAC and seventh nationally with a 17.00 digs-per-set average … The Cardinals have out-dug opponents in nine of its 11 matches so far this season and have five starters and seven overall players averaging at least 2.00 digs-per-set.
• Ball State has also been able to translate those digs into kills, leading the nation in assists per set (13.98) and ranking second nationally in kills per set (14.78) … Led by 6-2 setters senior Lindsey Green and sophomore Reese Axness, the Cardinals also rank 35th nationally with a .269 hitting percentage.
• Looking at the offensive numbers, the Cardinals are doing it with a very balanced attack as six players have collected at least 50 kills through the first 11 matches of the season … Four of those attackers have reached double-digit kills in at least three matches, led by junior opposite Tiffany Snook with double figures in nine of Ball State’s 11 outings so far this season.
• Senior middle Camryn Wise enters the weekend ranked second in the MAC and 39th nationally with a .400 hitting percentage, including six matches above the mark so far this season … Tiffany Snook is not far behind, ranking sixth in the league and 138th nationally at .344 … Snook has hit above .400 in four outings.

• Junior outside Ava Smith has shined in her first season with the Cardinals, leading the squad and ranking second in the MAC with a 3.59 kills-per-set average … She has smashed double-digit kills in eight matches so far this season, paced by a career-best 19 kills vs. Western Kentucky (Sept. 3) and against Northwestern (Sept. 17) … Including her two seasons at FGCU, Smith has 355 career kills with double digits in 14 career matches.

• Audrey Geer was named the MVP of the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Classic after posting kill/dig double-doubles in all three matches, raising her season total to four … She tied for team-high honors with a 4.10 kills-per-set average, while ranking second on the squad with a 3.70 digs-per-set average … Entering Friday’s match versus Western Michigan, Geer ranks third on the squad with a 2.82 kills-per-set average and second on the team with a 3.00 digs-per-set average.
• Including her two seasons at Marshall, Audrey Geer has smashed 510 career kills … She has notched double-digit kills in 28 collegiate matches and owns a career high of 17 kills versus Appalachian State on Nov. 11, 2024 … In addition, she has collected double-digit digs in 25 matches as a collegiate player and has amassed 503 career digs … Together, she has tallied 17 career kill/dig double-doubles, including a team-high four so far this season.

A new chapter of the 2026 season begins Friday night for Indiana State volleyball, as the Sycamores open Missouri Valley Conference play with a 6 p.m. match against Bradley inside ISU Arena. The Trees remain at home for a Saturday evening tilt against Southern Illinois, also set for a 6 p.m. first serve.
Friday’s match will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Chris Machado (play-by-play) and Nyah Wilson (analyst) on the call.

Last Time Out
After playing nine sets in a six-hour span, nobody would’ve been surprised if Indiana State showed fatigue in their non-conference finale Saturday afternoon. Instead, the Sycamores were the aggressors from the start in a commanding four-set win over Purdue Fort Wayne (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16) inside the Gates Sports Center.
The win completed a perfect 3-0 weekend for the Sycamores on their way to winning the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational, after sweeping its opening day doubleheader against Stonehill (four sets – 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 26-24) and Columbia (five sets – 17-25, 25-27, 25-23, 29-27, 15-11). In the process, Indiana State closed its non-conference slate at 6-5 and will enter conference play above .500 for the first time since 2021.
Curry Kendall paced the Sycamore attack with 17 kills and a season-high nine digs on her way to Tournament MVP honors. Kendall was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Kira Holland and Avery Hales, the latter of which posted a 26-assist, 11-dig double-double in Saturday’s win.
Perfection
Indiana State enters the opening weekend of conference play on a three-match win streak, having swept the field at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational. The Sycamores picked up wins over Stonehill (four sets), Columbia (five sets) and Purdue Fort Wanye (four sets) over the course of their undefeated weekend.
Indiana State earned a non-conference tournament title for the third straight season with their perfect weekend in Fort Wayne (2024 – Memphis, 2025 – Tennessee State, 2026 – Purdue Fort Wayne). Prior to 2024, the last time Indiana State claimed a non-conference tournament crown was in 2021.
Flipped The Script
Indiana State’s second match of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational showcased the Sycamores’ resiliency. After dropping the first two sets to Columbia, the Sycamores engineered a reverse sweep of the Lions (17-25, 25-27, 25-23, 29-27, 15-11) for their second win in a span of less than six hours.
The Trees’ reverse sweep of Columbia was the program’s first in over five years. Indiana State’s last win after dropping the first two sets came on Sept. 10, 2021 against Western Michigan (18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-14) during the Sycamore Invitational. To find the last time the Trees accomplished the feat away from home, one has to go to the COVID-impacted 2020-21 season when Indiana State rallied to reverse sweep Northern Iowa (15-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-6) in Cedar Falls on Feb. 28, 2021.
The Sycamores’ five-set win over Columbia was the program’s third of the season in five five-set matches, equaling the program’s five-set wins and five-set matches from the entire 2025 campaign.
Leading The Charge
Indiana State landed three athletes on the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational All-Tournament Team, with Tournament MVC Curry Kendall leading the way. Kendall tallied 17 or more kills in all three matches of the tournament, including tying her career high of 19 kills against Stonehill. In the process, she became the first Sycamore since Kynedi Nalls in 2016 to have three straight matches with 17 or more kills.
Kendall was joined on the All-Tournament Team by a pair of seniors in outside hitter Kira Holland and setter Avery Hales, after both notched a pair of double-doubles during the weekend. Hales set career highs with 55 assists against Columbia and 20 digs against Stonehill, becoming the first Sycamore since Melina Tedrow in 2018 with more than 50 assists in a match. Holland tallied double-digit digs in all three matches, while recording more than 15 kills in the Sycamores’ wins against Stonehill and Columbia.
Trending Upwards
Indiana State’s 3-0 showing at the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational ensured that the Sycamores enter Missouri Valley Conference play above the .500 mark for the first time since 2021. The Trees come in with a 6-5 record, one of just four MVC programs to finish with a non-conference record above .500 (Illinois State, Valparaiso and Northern Iowa are the other three).
The Sycamores’ last time over .500 in non-conference play was in 2021, when Indiana State finished the non-league slate at 8-2. Indiana State was buoyed by a seven-match win streak that season and earned a spot in the NIVC, the Sycamores’ first-ever Division I postseason appearance.
Indiana State’s success in 2026 has almost entirely come away from Terre Haute, as the Sycamores own a 5-1 record in neutral site matches. The Trees’ five neutral site wins are their most since the 1997 season, while their .833 win percentage in neutral site matches is the program’s best since the 1998 campaign (4-0).
Lockdown
Indiana State has made nothing easy for its opponents through the first four weeks of the 2026 season, with the Sycamores ranking among the conference leaders in multiple defensive statistics.
The Trees rank second in the MVC in opponent kills (11.23 per set), opponent assists (10.43 per set) and opponent aces (1.04 per set) this season, trailing only Illinois State in opponent kills and assists and Northern Iowa in opponent aces. Indiana State also ranks third in opponent hitting percentage (.207), behind only Northern Iowa and Illinois State.
Indiana State’s defensive numbers entering conference play are a stark contrast to the Sycamores’ 2025 marks. The Trees ranked 10th in the 11-school MVC in opponent kills, assists and hitting percentage last season while also ranking seventh in opponent aces.

Bradley enters conference play at 5-7 after going 1-2 in its home tournament, the CEFCU Invitational. All three of the Braves’ matches went five sets, with Bradley defeating UTRGV and falling to New Mexico State and Lindenwood. Reigning MVC Setter of the Year Maria Drapp has dished out 10.02 assists per set, with Gracie Furlong’s 3.78 kills per set pacing the Bradley attack.
Southern Illinois comes in at 6-6 following a 1-2 weekend at the Governors Classic. The Salukis swept SIUE before being reverse swept by Gardner-Webb and falling in three sets to Austin Peay. .

Indiana State is 34-50 against Bradley, though the Sycamores hold a 24-15 advantage in matches played in Terre Haute. Bradley has won five straight in the series, with Indiana State’s last win over the Braves coming in the 2022 MVC opener, which was in Terre Haute.

Indiana State heads into the 2026-27 season after successfully defending their Missouri Valley Conference crown this past season at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Ind. The Sycamores totaled 1,236 total points across the four-day meet to top Southern Illinois (1,161) and Missouri State (1,117) on their way to claiming the second title in program history.
The Sycamores claimed three individual titles with MVC Freshman Swimmer of the Year Grace Cummings topping the field in both the 500-yard and 1650-yard Freestyle events, while Ali Pearson was the top swimmer in the 100-yard Breaststroke. Indiana State also claimed the event win in the 200-yard Medley Relay. The depth of Indiana State’s roster was evident with 10 athletes earning MVC First Team honors, while an additional 10 athletes received recognition on the Honorable Mention squad.
Among the returners highlighting the roster from the First Team includes Anna Asplund, Grace Cummings, Kaleigh Kelley, Jecza Lopez, Maria Saldana Riebeling, and Sahara Visscher. Erin Cummins, Gemma Dilks, and Addison Johnson all return after recognition on the Honorable Mention squad.
The annual Blue-Gray meet is the culmination of the fall preseason as the Sycamores split into two teams in a night of competition in the pool. The teams compete in a series of events throughout the preseason in building team bonding and camaraderie both in and out of the water ahead of the season’s start.
The Gray Team picked up their third win in the last four seasons in the 2025-26 meet by a score of 161-121 to claim the intrasquad title. The win snapped the Blue Team’s momentum after claiming the 2024-25 title by a score of 161-119.
Overall, a number of athletes on the roster will potentially defend their titles with Sara Keefe (100-yard, 200-yard Backstroke), Sahara Visscher (100-yard Free), Kaleigh Kelley (100-yard Fly), Gemma Dilks (200-yard IM), and Erin Cummins (200-yard Freestyle) among last year’s winners returning to the roster. Jecza Lopez (1M, 3M Springboard) swept both diving events and is back on the boards again this year.
The Sycamores are set to open the 2026-27 regular season on Friday, October 9, as a part of the Homecoming festivities running throughout the week. The meet will also serve as Indiana State’s Alumni Weekend meet as the Sycamores host Illinois State in a dual meet competition set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.

PURDUE FT. WAYNE WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Mastodons and Colonials played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes. Purdue Fort Wayne recorded three shots in the opening half, including a shot on goal from Audriana Rhyner.
The Mastodons finished with six shots, with Mary McArdle and Rhyner recording two shots each. Keira Bradford and Rhyner each put a shot on goal. Purdue Fort Wayne also earned four corner kicks.
Robert Morris broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute. The Colonials added a second goal less than five minutes later to extend their lead to 2-0.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Thursday was a monumental day for the University of Evansville softball program with the unveiling of the Trena K. Roedel Hitting Facility along with a renovated locker room that puts the Purple Aces’ facilities among the top at the NCAA’s Mid-Major level.
“What a special day for Aces softball. The goal from day 1 has been to bring elite facilities and resources to our softball players, and with the help and support of so many, especially Trena, we have taken a huge step in the right direction,” UE head softball coach Bailey Dillender said. “Our ability to prioritize player development in the most opportune times during the year has now been elevated. I can’t wait to see how the Hitting Facility pushes us forward in the years to come.”
“In the ever-changing landscape of college athletics and the continued investment in our sport across the country it’s imperative to me that we are always working towards the next improvement,” Dillender continued. “I am most excited for our student athletes to have multiple spaces to call their own, and to be proud of what those spaces look like. It’s a great time be a part of Aces softball.”
The dedication of the newest facilities for the UE softball program took place outside the Trena K. Roedel Hitting Facility, which is adjacent to right field at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium. Through the generosity of a group of supporters led by Trena Roedel, the UE softball program took major steps forward in its quest to be at the top of the Missouri Valley Conference.
“Trena Roedel’s legacy at the University of Evansville will extend far beyond her extraordinary generosity. Through the financial resources she provides, the time she gives, and the genuine care she shows, Trena has created opportunities that will shape the lives of UE women student-athletes for generations to come,” UE Vice President for Athletics Dr. Ziggy Siegfried exclaimed. “She is a true difference-maker, and her lasting impact will be felt not only by the women competing today, but by every young woman who has the opportunity to proudly represent the Purple Aces in the future.”
Roedel is an alum of the Purple Aces softball program and has been a lifelong advocate for women’s sports. Following a record-setting career at North High School, Roedel was a State Championship player for the Evansville Comets. She has been committed to creating opportunities and resources for future female student-athletes and Thursday’s announcement is a testament to her efforts.
“Softball was a very important part of my life for many years. I wanted to be able to provide the new coaching staff with the tools necessary to recruit the best players by offering top notch facilities and learning tools,” Roedel said. “I believe the new clubhouse, totally renovated locker room and the brand-new indoor batting facility will do a lot to achieve those goals.”
“When Coach Dillender joined the program, we had a one-on-one lunch with the goal of getting to know each other and discussing our visions for the softball program. We quickly realized that our visions were the same,” Roedel continued. “It is exciting to see those visions become a reality as this staff is setting a strong foundation for the future of the program.”
The addition of the on-campus hitting facility gives UE the ONLY one of its kind in the Missouri Valley Conference that is dedicated to softball. Student-athletes can access the facility at any time. With the building having HVAC, this will be especially beneficial in the weeks leading up to the season.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer finishes its four-game road trip Saturday by opening up Ohio Valley Conference play at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

USI (0-4-3) looks for a fresh start as it opens OVC play after falling 4-1 at Belmont University last Friday.
Sophomore midfielder Brian Novillo scored his second goal of the season against the Bruins, becoming the first Screaming Eagles player with multiple goals this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob English added five saves at Belmont. English leads the conference with 38 saves and is ranked 11th nationally.
Behind Novillo, USI has four players with one goal apiece, while six players have recorded two points this season. Graduate student Garrett Morris and freshman Christian Rotundo were USI’s most recent goal scorers before Novillo. Sophomore Tony Murphy leads the team in assists with two.
SIUE (2-4-1) beat Division III opponent Webster University 3-0 on Sunday evening. The Cougars scored in the 17th, 26th, and 53rd minutes of the match and held Webster without a shot in the second half.
SIUE’s season is highlighted by a 1-0 win over rival Saint Louis University for the Bronze Boot. The Cougars scored their lone goal in the 36th minute. SIUE held St. Louis scoreless by stopping five shots on goal.
Junior forward Ryley Gibbs and Senior defender Archie McDonnell lead the Cougars with two goals each this season. SIUE also has seven different players with one assist apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Ioannis Koupepides protects the net for SIUE; he has amassed 19 saves while allowing nine goals in six games this season.

SOUTHERN INDIANA SWIMMING
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Summit League released its 2026-27 Preseason Coaches’ Poll and its Swimmers and Divers to Watch List on Thursday, projecting University of Southern Indiana Women’s Swimming in a tie for fourth and University of Southern Indiana Men’s Swimming to finish fifth. This year’s field consists of six teams after the University of Denver’s departure from the league.
Both USI squads are coming off sixth-place finishes at the 2026 Summit League Championships.
The Summit League also named four Screaming Eagles for its Swimmers and Divers to Watch List, nominated by the league’s head coaches.
Senior Nathan Deputy was tabbed as USI’s diver to watch on the men’s side. Deputy finished the 2026 season as the program’s record holder in the 3-meter dive (333.05), a mark that qualified him for the 2026 NCAA Zone C Championships. He also earned a spot on the 2026 All-Summit League team after medaling in the team diving event at last year’s championships.
Senior Sam Smith returns as USI’s swimmer to watch after a historic junior campaign. Smith captured the program’s first-ever conference championship in the 200 butterfly, setting a school record in the process (1:47.77). He added five more school records during the season, including the 100 butterfly (48.59), and swam on the record-setting 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, and 400 medley relays.
Senior Maranda Uttke was named USI’s diver to watch on the women’s side heading into 2026-27. Uttke is the Screaming Eagles’ top returner in the 1-meter dive and sits second on the program’s all-time leaderboard. Despite not competing at last year’s Summit League Championships, she was named All-Summit League in 2025 after medaling in the team springboard event and qualifying for B-finals in the 1-meter at the 2025 championships.
Freshman Anna Whitley was selected as USI’s swimmer to watch entering her first season as a Screaming Eagle. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native is a four-time Tennessee state qualifier who finished as high as seventh in the 100 freestyle as a senior. Whitley spent her summer competing for Tennessee Aquatics, closing her season at the USA Swimming Futures Championship in Knoxville.
The Screaming Eagles kick off their 2026-27 season this Saturday with the Red and Blue Intersquad Meet at 11 a.m. The first regular-season meet will take place October 9 at Valparaiso University. USI Swim & Dive returns home October 24 against the University of Evansville for Senior Day.

SOUTHERN INDIANA VOLLEYBALL
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball kicks off Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend on the road at Eastern Illinois University inside McAfee Gym in Charleston, Illinois.
The Screaming Eagles will hit the court on Friday, September 25th at 6 p.m. against the Panthers for the first match of the series, then will close it out on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription, but Friday’s match will be part of the OVC’s set of simulcast streams in partnership with Gray Media.
USI finished the non-conference slate with a 5-7 record. The Screaming Eagles saw several competitive opponents during the first portion of the season, including four 2025 NCAA Tournament teams.
To close out non-conference play, USI split a home-and-home series with the University of Evansville. The Screaming Eagles swept the Purple Aces to win the second annual Battle for the Lloyd championship last Friday at home inside Liberty Arena, before dropping the second match at UE’s gym in a competitive five sets.
The Screaming Eagles tallied 27 service aces in the UE series, for 3.38 per set. Senior Ashby Willis led the charge with 10 aces during the series, five per match. USI leads the OVC in aces with 89 total and 1.89/set for the season. Fifth-year Aspen Jankowski is first on the individual leaderboard with 22 so far this season.
USI also leads the OVC in team digs, tallying 725 for 15.43/set through the first 12 matches of the season. Junior libero Audrey Small leads the league in total digs (167) and is second in digs per set (3.55), and Willis follows close behind in second with 149 total digs and sixth in her per-set average (3.17).
About Eastern Illinois: The Panthers finished their non-conference slate with a 1-10 record, their one win coming from a five-set match over Santa Clara to open their season. EIU faced several Power Four opponents in the opening portion of its season, including No. 24 BYU (0-3), No. 21 Indiana (0-3), RV Cal Poly (0-3), Illinois (1-3), and a home-and-home series with Notre Dame (0-3, 0-3). In 2025, the Screaming Eagles held their OVC home opener hosting EIU, sweeping each game of the series in two statement wins.
EIU holds the record in the overall series at 5-4, but USI has taken wins in the last four of the program’s meetings. The Panthers won a share of the 2025 regular season title with Morehead State, but took the tiebreaker to host the OVC Tournament, where they defeated MSU in the final in a 3-0 sweep. EIU represented the OVC in the NCAA Tournament, taking on #3-seed Wisconsin in the first round.
Outside hitter Katie Kopshever leads the Panthers with 135 kills (3.65/set). The EIU offense is directed by setter Peyton Castillo, who has tallied 191 assists (7.07/set). EIU libero Ariadna Pereles leads the OVC with 3.84/set, and she’s tallied 142 total digs.

SOUTHERN INDIANA XC
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Men’s and Women’s Cross Country toes the starting line at the Gans Creek Classic Friday morning in Columbia, Missouri.
The women’s six-kilometer invitational is slated for an 8 a.m. start time, while the men’s 8k invitational begins at 8:45 a.m. There also will be a pair of open races that the Screaming Eagles will have competitors involved in. The women’s open is at 9:45 a.m. and the men’s follows at 10:30 a.m.
Friday’s meet is expected to be aired on SEC Network+, while live results and streaming links can be accessed at USIScreamingEagles.com.
The Screaming Eagles are competing in their fourth meet in the last four weeks, with most student-athletes racing in uniform for USI on Friday having last competed at the Spartan Invitational two weeks ago.
Senior Alex Nolan paced the men’s team with a ninth-place finish in the 312-competitor field at the Spartan Invitational. Sophomores Jackson Nolan and Jadon Muncy finished 30th and 31st, respectively, to aid the Screaming Eagles, who placed fifth in the 23-team field.
USI’s women were led by senior Ellie Hall, who placed 35th in the 283-competitor field at the Spartan Invitational despite suffering a fall early in the race. Senior Sierra Parks and junior Cordelia Hoover were 62nd and 65th, respectively, to help the Screaming Eagles to a seventh-place showing in the 24-team field.
The Screaming Eagles sent a smaller squad to the Ohio Valley Conference Preview last week. Sophomore Bella Fuentes paced the women’s squad with a seventh-place showing, while sophomore Carson Brown raced to his first-career victory to lead USI’s men.

Head Coach John Marovich: In his 19th season at the helm of the Valpo program, John Marovich holds a 145-144-54 (.501) record both overall and at Valpo as a head coach. The 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year and the head of the 2022 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year, Marovich is Valpo’s all-time leader in victories.
Series Notes: One of the most common opponents in program history, Valpo holds a 14-5-2 advantage in the all-time series over the Sycamores. Valpo had won five in a row in the series between March 2021 and September 2023, but ISU has won the last two matchups, including a 3-0 decision in Terre Haute last season.
Scouting the Opposition: Indiana State comes into Brown Field Sunday with a 6-1-3 record this year, most recently emerging victorious by a 2-0 count this past Sunday in its MVC opener against UNI. The Sycamores have scored 17 goals in their nine contests against D-I opponents this year, led by three goals from Emely Lopez in those fixtures. Sofie Hansen has seen the vast majority of action in goal, boasting a 0.71 GAA and an .806 save percentage.
To Score or Not to Score: It’s been pretty simple most of the season for the Beacons – if they score, they’re in good shape for a result. They have scored at least one goal in six of their 10 matches and own a 4-1-1 record in those matches – in fact, in all six matches, they found the back of the net at least twice. On the other hand, they’ve been held scoreless on four occasions, resulting in four of their five defeats.
In-State Foe: Sunday’s match is the third of four this season for Valpo against fellow Hoosier State programs. The Beacons defeated both Indiana-based teams they faced in the nonconference, earning identical 2-0 wins over Purdue Fort Wayne and Southern Indiana.
Hoosier State Crown: Since Valpo joined the MVC prior to the 2017 season, it has claimed the unofficial Hoosier State crown among the Valley’s three Indiana-based schools on four occasions, doing so in four consecutive seasons from the spring of 2021 through the 2023 campaign. Indiana State has had the highest point total in matches between the Indiana schools three times, including each of the last two years, while Evansville has done so twice. Since joining the Valley, the Beacons have accrued 33 points against ISU and UE, while ISU has tallied 24 points in such matches and UE 18.
Home Sweet Home: It will be nearly a month between road trips for Valpo, as the Beacons closed nonconference play with a pair of home matches before opening the MVC schedule with two matches on Brown Field. It is the first time Valpo will have played four straight home matches since playing five in a row back in the Eastgate Field days in September and October 2008. The 28-day stretch between games away from home will be the longest such stretch in program history.
Ki Does It Again: Sophomore Kiara Desiderio was named the MVC Player of the Week for the second time in her career on Sept. 14 after a big week on the attack. After entering the week with two goals and one assists in the season’s first seven matches, Desiderio knocked home a pair of goals in the win over Oakland and then was involved with both goals in the win over USI with a goal and an assist. She has now had multiple goal involvements in three matches this season and five for her career, including three career braces.
Another Brace for Martha: Sophomore Martha Goddard recorded her second brace of the season in the win over Oakland and followed it up with a goal against Southern Indiana, accounting for both match-winning goals in her three-goal weekend as she boosted her season total to six goals. Desiderio and Goddard became the first Valpo teammates to both score twice in a single match since Kendall Brown and Sarah Jewell each scored a pair Oct. 8, 2006 in a victory over Lewis.
First-Time Honoree: While Desiderio earned her third career weekly honor from the MVC office with her Player of the Week accolade Sept. 14, senior Daisy Boardman earned a weekly award for the first time as she was recognized as the MVC Defender of the Week. Boardman played 170 of a possible 180 minutes at right back as the Beacons surrendered just one goal over their final two nonconference wins, while adding her first assist of the season on the attack versus Oakland. Boardman was just the third Valpo player to be honored as Defender of the Week since the Valley broke goalkeeper and defender into two separate weekly awards starting in 2023.
Multiple Weekly Winners: Desiderio and Boardman teamed up to mark the seventh time multiple Valpo players have earned MVC weekly accolades in the same week since Valpo joined the Valley. It was the first such instance since Sept. 26, 2022, when Addy Joiner, Nikki Coryell and Nicole Norfolk swept the player, goalkeeper and defender weekly honors.
Nonconference Success: With wins in each of their final two nonconference fixtures, the Beacons closed out their nonconference slate at .500 with a 4-4-1 record. This is the fifth time in the last seven seasons that Valpo has finished .500 or better in the nonconference schedule.
Putting Away Goals: With six goals over its last two nonconference wins, Valpo bumped its season total to 16 goals. It was the program’s highest goal total entering its first conference match since the 2005 side tallied 17 goals prior to its Mid-Con opener. The Beacons scored multiple goals in six of their nine nonconference matches.
Preseason Honoree: Coming off a rookie campaign in which she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, sophomore Kiara Desiderio was named to the Preseason All-MVC Team. Desiderio, who became Valpo’s first Freshman of the Year since joining the Valley and was also a Second Team All-MVC choice, kicked off her Beacon career with a team-high seven goals in 2025 — tied for third-most by a freshman in program history. She ranked third in the MVC in goals and fifth in points (15), while also being tied for seventh nationally in goals by a freshman.
Who’s Back: The Beacons return 16 players who saw action on the pitch last season, including eight regular starters. That group accounted for 73.4% of the team’s minutes played by field players in 2025, including six players who played over 1,000 minutes – led by junior Ashley Trippeer, who played 1,397 minutes.
Who’s Gone: Valpo graduated four seniors from last year’s squad and had five other offseason departures. Notably, Second Team All-MVC honoree Molly O’Rear and starting goalkeeper Kate Sheridan were among the group of seniors.
Who’s New: The Beacons welcome nine new players to the program this season: seven true freshmen, one Division I transfer and one Division III transfer.
Good as Goddard: Sophomore forward Martha Goddard returns for her second season in the Brown and Gold after a strong rookie campaign. An MVC All-Freshman Team selection, Goddard tallied three goals and recorded five assists, the latter mark matching the program record for assists by a freshman. She was tied for second in the MVC in assists and tied for fourth on Valpo’s overall single-season chart. Goddard became the first Valpo player to register an assist in three consecutive contests since 2017.
Looking Back at Last Year: Valpo posted a 5-8-4 overall record in 2025 and went 2-4-3 in MVC play, earning eight more points in the Valley than the previous season despite playing one fewer conference game and raising its winning percentage 162 points year-over-year. The Beacons scored 21 goals while surrendering 28 goals, improving their goal differential by 21 goals over 2024. This all came with the vast majority of field player minutes coming from underclassmen, as the 2025 Beacons had 41.2% of their field player minutes played by freshman and 42.3% by sophomores. Kiara Desiderio was named the MVC Freshman of the Year and was joined by Molly O’Rear on the Second Team All-MVC, while Martha Goddard joined Desiderio on the MVC All-Freshman Team.

Series History: Belmont – Valpo owns a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Bruins, including a 5-2 mark since Belmont joined the MVC. Last season, the Beacons rallied from down two sets to earn a 3-2 win at the ARC before the Bruins won via sweep in Nashville.
Illinois State – The Redbirds own a 15-7 advantage in the all-time series, including a 13-5 record since Valpo joined the MVC. Last season, both matches went the full five sets, with the road team emerging victorious in both contests.
Scouting the Opposition: Belmont – The Bruins enter MVC play with a 3-8 record, most recently dropping 3-1 decisions last weekend in Nashville to Vanderbilt and Lipscomb. Erin McMullen ranks third in the Valley with a .376 hitting percentage while contributing better than two kills per set, while Alexia Smollen is fourth among MVC players with 1.08 blocks/set.
Illinois State – The Redbirds enter the weekend with a 9-2 record, having swept both Marist and Oakland last weekend in their most recent action. Ruth Ziegler leads all Valley players with 0.73 service aces/set and also ranks seventh in the conference with a .340 hitting percentage, while Jillian Ferrill averages 2.92 kills/set, good for eighth in the MVC.
Capturing Crowns: Part of the volleyball program’s winning tradition has been a penchant for capturing tournament titles, and that continued in 2026, as the Beacons claimed the Chattanooga Classic on opening weekend and the WNY Invitational this past weekend. Valpo has won 38 in-season tournament titles since the start of the 2002 campaign. The team has won at least one tournament in 19 of those 25 seasons, and multiple tournaments 12 times. Those tournament titles have come in 14 different states.
An Early Indicator: Since Valpo joined the MVC prior to the 2017 season, its performance in the first few matches of conference play has been a strong indication of how the rest of the Valley slate will fall. Each of the four seasons Valpo has started with at least two wins in its first three MVC matches, it has finished with a winning record in the Valley, while in the four seasons (excluding the COVID-affected spring 2021 campaign) Valpo has dropped at least two of its first three MVC matches, it has finished at or below .500 in the conference.
Playing Their Aces: The Beacons had their serving game on point right from the start of the season, racking up 13 service aces in the season-opening win over UAB – second-most by a Valpo team in the 25-point era for a five-set match. Then last weekend, Valpo tallied 14 service aces in the win over Le Moyne – the program’s most in a sweep in the 25-point era – and 11 more in the sweep of Niagara – tied for fifth in a three-set match in the 25-point era. Valpo currently leads the MVC and ranks 23rd nationally with 2.07 aces/set.
Individual Serving Success: Freshman Rylee Bumgardner posted five service aces in her collegiate debut against UAB, tied for second in the 25-point era in a five-set match. Junior Maggie Uhwat matched that mark last weekend against Canisius in a four-set match, moving into a tie for second in the 25-point era on that chart. Uhwat also recorded three service aces in each of last weekend’s other two matches and is up to 26 aces on the season, good for 15th nationally and already just six away from cracking the program’s single-season top-10 in the 25-point era.
Big Kill Advantages: Not only did Valpo have its serving game on point last weekend, the Beacons also rode large advantages in the kill department to their three victories. Valpo was +26 in kills in the win over Le Moyne (44-18), +14 in the win over Niagara (41-27) and +14 in the win over Canisius (53-39). The 18 kills in the Le Moyne match were the fewest by a Valpo opponent since Sept. 1, 2007, when St. Francis (N.Y.) posted just 17 kills
One-Two Punch: The combination of junior outside Jordyn Gove and junior right side Ava Helming has consistently paced the Beacons’ attack this year. Gove currently ranks third in the MVC with 3.80 kills/set, with Helming close behind her in fifth with 3.73 kills/set. Gove, who entered the season with a career high of 16 kills, has surpassed 20 kills four times already this season, including two matches with 22 kills. Meanwhile, Helming has three matches with at least 20 kills, including a career-best 28 kills against Cleveland State – a mark which ties the most by a Valpo player in the 25-point era.
Player of the Week: Helming was named the MVC Player of the Week Sept. 14 following a weekend in northeastern Ohio where she averaged an MVC-best 4.62 kills/set on .261 hitting, highlighted by her career-high 28-kill effort in the win over Cleveland State. It is the third MVC Player of the Week honor of Helming’s career, as she had one apiece as well in each of her first two seasons.
High Efficiency: Already a very efficient hitter out of the middle, junior Jessica Pickett enjoyed her most efficient weekend of the season on the attack last weekend, racking up 19 kills on 35 swings while committing just two attack errors – good for a .486 hitting percentage. She capped the weekend with 11 kills on .476 hitting in the win over Canisius, just one kill off her career high. On the season, Pickett ranks second in the MVC with a .405 hitting percentage – a mark which would break the program’s single-season record by over 50 points.
Digging It Up: Freshman Rylee Bumgardner has taken a hold on the libero role over the past couple weekends for the Beacons. After averaging just 2.20 digs/set over the first two weeks of the season, Bumgardner has averaged 4.59 digs/set over the last two weeks – reaching double figures in digs in all six matches, including a season-best 29 at Akron. The freshman’s season average of 3.45 kills/set currently ranks eighth in the Valley.
A Lethal Attack: Valpo’s win over Oakland came in large part due to the Beacons’ efficiency on the attack. Valpo hit .320 with 70 kills in the win over the Golden Grizzlies – the kill total is tied for second in a four-set match by Valpo in the 25-point era, ironically matching a total against Oakland back on Nov. 21, 2015, while the hitting percentage ranks fourth in a four-set match in the 25-point era. Valpo outkilled Oakland by a 70-38 margin, the program’s biggest advantage in that department since being +33 (76-43) in a win over Wake Forest Sept. 6, 2008. The Beacons’ .320 hitting percentage was the fifth-best in program history when compiling at least 70 kills.
Setting It Up: The Beacons ran a 5-1 in that win over Oakland, and sophomore Olivia Wagner took full advantage playing all the way around at setter. Wagner dished out 57 assists, tied for second-most in a four-set match by a Valpo player in the 25-point era and just one shy of the record. Her assist total was the program’s highest since Victoria Bulmahn tallied 57 assists at Drake March 1, 2021. Wagner was efficient as well, ending the night with a setting percentage of .514. Wagner’s 57 assists more than doubled her collegiate career total, as she entered the night with 55 assists to her name. She also recorded a career-high 10 digs to finish with her first collegiate double-double. On the other end of Wagner’s sets more often than not were Ava Helming (24 kills) and Jordyn Gove (22 kills), becoming the first pair of Valpo players to each hit 20 kills in the same match since Feb. 14, 2021 against Southern Illinois, when Jaclyn Bulmahn notched 23 kills and Jillie Grant 22.
