Every Magic starter scored at least 16 points. Franz Wagner supplied 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Wendell Carter Jr. and Desmond Bane each contributed 17 points and five assists. Jalen Suggs had 16 points, four assists and three steals. The Pistons have lost 11 straight playoff home games dating back to the 2008 Eastern Conference finals. Cade Cunningham carried Detroit with 39 points. Tobias Harris was the only other Piston in double figures with 17 points. All-Star center Jalen Duren attempted only four shots in 33 minutes while being held to eight points and seven rebounds. Orlando shot 48.9% from the field while limiting Detroit to 40.3% shooting. Thunder 119, Suns 84 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 25 points to pace Oklahoma City to a blowout of visiting Phoenix in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series. Gilgeous-Alexander was just 5 of 18 from the field but went 15 of 17 from the free-throw line and had a game-high seven assists. Jalen Williams added 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists in just 29 minutes while Chet Holmgren contributed 16 points. The Suns, who shot just 34.9% from the field, were led by Devin Booker’s 23 points. Dillon Brooks added 18 and Jalen Green 17. The Thunder scored 34 points off 19 Phoenix turnovers. Celtics 123, 76ers 91 Jaylen Brown scored a game-high 26 points and Jayson Tatum added 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead Boston over visiting Philadelphia in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Sam Hauser made 4 of 6 attempts from 3-point range to add 12 points for the second-seeded Celtics, who never trailed. Neemias Queta was in foul trouble for much of the game but scored 13 points in 15 minutes of playing time. Seventh-seeded Philadelphia received 21 points with eight assists from Tyrese Maxey and 17 from Paul George. The 76ers shot 38.9% from the floor, including 4 of 23 (17.4%) from 3-point territory. Philadelphia also committed 15 turnovers, which helped Boston hold a 22-3 edge in points off turnovers. Spurs 111, Trail Blazers 98 Victor Wembanyama hit for 35 points in his postseason debut as host San Antonio Spurs outlasted Portland in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series. Wembanyama broke Tim Duncan’s franchise record (32 in 1998) for points in a playoff debut. He led all first-half scorers with 21 points — a league record for most in the first half of an NBA playoff debut going back to 1997, the start of the play-by-play era. Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox added 17 points apiece for the Spurs, with Devin Vassell scoring 15 and Luke Kornet hitting for 10. Basketball Training Program Deni Avdija racked up 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers. Scoot Henderson scored 18, Robert Williams III had 11, Shaedon Sharpe hit for 10 and Jrue Holiday distributed 11 assists along with nine points. MONDAY’S NBA MATCHUPS: RAPTORS-CAVALIERS, HAWKS-KNICKS AND TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS ARE SET FOR GAME 2S There’s a cliche that gets unearthed at this time of year, without fail, reminding everyone that a playoff series doesn’t truly begin until one team wins on the other team’s home floor. If so, then the Toronto-Cleveland, Atlanta-New York and Minnesota-Denver series still haven’t gotten going. The Cavaliers, Knicks and Nuggets all held serve in their playoff openers on Saturday — and will simply look to successfully defend their home floors again when Game 2 of those series get played on Monday night. “They did their job. They got the first game on their floor,” Minnesota star guard Anthony Edwards said after the Timberwolves lost Game 1 in Denver, the resumption of what’s become one of the league’s top playoff rivalries in recent years. “And we’re going to do our job next game.” Of the three road teams that will be playing on Monday, only the Timberwolves had a double-digit lead at any point in Game 1. They jumped out to a 12-point edge before Denver finally hit its stride. “We were up against it right away. And that’s a big thing for a road team, to come out and punch the home team in the mouth,” Nuggets coach David Adelman said. “That’s what they did after we missed shots. And just the reaction to that, staying together, winning a grimy game, it is good.” Toronto’s biggest lead in Game 1 at Cleveland was five points (27-22 late in the first). It didn’t take long for the Cavs to assume control. “Game 1 is important,” Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said. “Obviously, they came in confident and they’re a physical team and talented team. But I thought, right off the bat, we set the tone. I think it’s super important.” Atlanta’s biggest lead in Game 1 at New York was just four (11-7 early) — but the Hawks were within single digits of the Knicks most of the way. “The formula for us, and our identity, has been to run and move the ball,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said. “And it’s not like we didn’t do that, but we need to do more of it. We’re playing a really good team. It’s Game 1 and you take it, you watch it and we’ll see more specifically some of the things that we need do to be better.” Toronto Raptors at Cleveland Cavaliers When/Where to Watch: Game 2, 7 p.m. EDT (Peacock/NBCSN) Series: Cavaliers lead, 1-0. Betting line: Cavaliers by 8.5. What to Know: For as much as people talk about how dynamic the Cleveland backcourt of Donovan Mitchell and James Harden is (and rightly so), there’s a third part of that equation now that Max Strus is back for the Cavs after missing much of the season because of injury. Strus has played in 13 games this season and scored at least 24 points in four of them, and his 24 off the bench in Game 1 basically was the deciding factor in the game. If there’s one big reason for optimism on the Raptors side going into Game 2, maybe it’s this: Toronto has shown the ability to regroup quickly after losses, going 18-8 in its most recent 26 games that followed a defeat. Atlanta Hawks at New York Knicks When/Where to Watch: Game 2, 8 p.m. EDT (NBC/Peacock) Series: Knicks lead, 1-0. Betting line: Knicks by 5.5. What to Know: The Hawks have gone on to lose each of their last five playoff series after dropping Game 1, with the most recent exception to that being the 2015 East semifinals against Washington. And the Knicks needed to start this series off the right way, rather than risk waking up the echoes of what was a 4-6 record in their 10 most recent playoff games at Madison Square Garden entering Saturday. Atlanta lost Game 1 by 11 points and took 11 fewer free throws than the Knicks did, a fact that Hawks fans surely noticed. New York got to the foul line 30 times for only the eighth time all season (though in fairness, six of those FTAs came in the final minute). Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets When/Where to Watch: Game 2, 10:30 p.m. EDT (NBC/Peacock) Series: Nuggets lead, 1-0. Betting line: Nuggets by 6.5. What to Know: No teams have faced off in more playoff games than these two have since the start of the 2023 postseason; Denver is 8-5 in 13 playoff tilts vs. Minnesota in that span, with the combined score of those contests being Nuggets 1,370, Timberwolves 1,351. Game 1 of this matchup did nothing to suggest that another long series between these rivals isn’t on the way. Denver had a big edge in free throws attempted (33-19) in Game 1 and Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was 16 for 16 from the line (the most free throws without a miss in a playoff game since 2021). Anthony Edwards took 19 shots in Game 1 for Minnesota, and against a high-octane team like Denver the Wolves might be wondering if he needs to take more. =================================== NHL NHL ROUNDUP: SABRES STORM PAST BRUINS FOR 1ST PLAYOFF WIN IN 15 YEARS Tage Thompson scored two of the Buffalo Sabres’ four goals in the final eight minutes of the third period in a 4-3 comeback win against the visiting Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series on Sunday night. After the Sabres were held scoreless for 52:02, Thompson scored twice in a span of less than four minutes to level the score at 2. Mattias Samuelsson and Alex Tuch scored the final two goals and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 17 saves for Buffalo, which was appearing in its first playoff game in 15 years. David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie each had a goal and two assists, Elias Lindholm also scored and Jeremy Swayman made 34 saves for Boston. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday in Buffalo. Canadiens 4, Lightning 3 (OT) Juraj Slafkovsky netted his hat-trick game-winner 1:22 into the postseason’s first overtime as visiting Montreal stunned Tampa Bay in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series. Josh Anderson scored the other goal for the Canadiens while Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki notched two assists apiece. Rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes made 20 saves. The Lightning’s Brandon Hagel scored on the man advantage and at even strength while Darren Raddysh scored on the power play. Guentzel posted three assists and Nikita Kucherov had two. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 15 of 19 shots as Montreal went 3-for-5 on the power play. Avalanche 2, Kings 1 Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves in his first Stanley Cup playoffs start and Colorado defeated Los Angeles in Game 1 of their series in Denver. Artturi Lehkonen and Logan O’Connor scored for the Avalanche, who took a shutout into the final minutes of the game. Artemi Panarin scored the goal for the Kings with 2:22 left. Anton Forsberg, who also started his first playoff contest, stopped 28 shots. Golden Knights 4, Mammoth 2 Nic Dowd scored the go-ahead goal 7:20 into the third period and Carter Hart made 31 saves as Vegas rallied past Utah in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series in Las Vegas. Colton Sissons had a goal and an assist, Noah Hanifin had two assists and Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev also scored goals for the Golden Knights, who improved to 8-0-1 since John Tortorella replaced Bruce Cassidy as head coach. Logan Cooley and Kevin Stenlund each scored goals for Utah, which was playing its first playoff game in the franchise’s two-season history. Karel Vejmelka finished with 27 saves. =================================== NFL TEXANS’ WILL ANDERSON JR. LANDS A RECORD $150M EXTENSION, TOP-PAID NON-QB IN NFL HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. agreed to a three-year, $150 million contract extension making him the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced. The extension includes $134 million in guaranteed money. The $50 million per year Anderson will earn surpasses the $46.5 million per year defensive end Micah Parsons got when he signed a four-year extension with the Packers after a trade from Dallas last year. Anderson started each game last season and had 12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss — both career highs — to lead a Houston defense that was among the best in the NFL. The Texans selected Anderson with the third pick in the 2023 draft, trading up to nab the Alabama standout after selecting quarterback C.J. Stroud second in that draft. In three seasons with the Texans, Anderson has piled up 30 sacks and 136 tackles, including 46 for loss. He also has 64 quarterback hits in his career and has forced four fumbles and recovered three. The Texans exercised his fifth-year player option earlier this month so this deal will keep him in Houston through the 2030 season. BENGALS GET STAR DEFENSIVE TACKLE DEXTER LAWRENCE FROM GIANTS FOR 10TH PICK AND EXTEND HIM The Cincinnati Bengals acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants for the 10th pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The teams announced the deal Sunday after agreeing to it Saturday night pending a physical. Cincinnati then signed Lawrence to an extension that pays him an average of $28 million through the 2028 NFL season, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Giants now have the fifth and 10th picks for the draft that begins Thursday night. They’re heading into their first draft under coach John Harbaugh after finishing 4-13 last season. The Bengals paid a hefty price for the 28-year-old Lawrence, who asked for a trade because he wanted a new contract. He was set to make roughly $20 million each of the next two seasons and is now under contract for three more. “I know they gave up a lot for me, and I appreciate that. I don’t take that for granted. I have a fire in me,” Lawrence said Sunday at Paycor Stadium, according to the Bengals’ website. Barring a trade, it’ll be the first time Cincinnati doesn’t have a first-round pick since 1989, when the Bengals traded the next-to-last pick in the draft (No. 27) to Atlanta for a second-round pick (No. 35), a fourth (No. 89) and a 10th (No. 256). The 6-foot-4, 340-pound Lawrence had a career-high nine sacks in 2024 but only registered a half-sack last season. He made the Pro Bowl in 2022-24 and was a second-team Associated Press All-Pro in 2022 and 2023. The Bengals ranked near the bottom in several defensive categories last season. They were 31st in yards allowed, 30th in points allowed and 30th against the run. With Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins leading a dynamic offense, improving the defense was a must this offseason. Lawrence gives Cincinnati a proven star in the middle of the defensive line, though the cost was steep. The Giants will be the 22nd team in the common draft era (since 1967) to have two top-10 picks and the fifth in the last five years. They did it in 2022 with Kayvon Thibodeaux (fifth) and Evan Neal (seventh). The Bears took Caleb Williams first and Rome Odunze ninth in 2024. The Texans selected C.J. Stroud second and Will Anderson Jr. third in 2023. The Jets got Sauce Gardner fourth and Garrett Wilson 10th in 2022. On Tuesday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen said the team was having productive talks with Lawrence’s camp. “We’d like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be,” Schoen said. “We’ll see. But conversations have been really good, they’ve been productive and we’ll see what happens here down the road.” But owning two top-10 picks was too good to pass up. =================================== MLB MLB ROUNDUP: CUBS RALLY LATE, WALK OFF IN 10 AS METS’ SKID HITS 11 Nico Hoerner lofted a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning for the host Chicago Cubs, who completed a three-game sweep of the reeling New York Mets with a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon. Michael Conforto, who spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with the Mets, forced extra innings by lacing a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth against New York closer Devin Williams for the Cubs, who have won five straight and six of seven. MJ Melendez homered in the fifth for the Mets, who have lost 11 straight — the longest skid for the team since an 11-game losing streak from Aug. 28-Sept. 8, 2004. New York hasn’t lost 12 straight since Aug. 10-23, 2002. Chicago left-hander Caleb Thielbar (2-2) stranded a pair of runners in the top of the 10th before the Cubs’ automatic runner Pete Crow-Armstrong moved to third on a wild pitch by Craig Kimbrel (0-1), who struck out Dansby Swanson. Hoerner followed with a fly ball to medium right that easily scored Armstrong. Yankees 7, Royals 0 Aaron Judge and Ben Rice homered off Cole Ragans in the opening two innings, and host New York continued its dominance over Kansas City with its 10th straight regular-season win in the series. Trent Grisham added a three-run homer in the fifth and Austin Wells added a sacrifice fly in the first inning after Judge’s two-run homer, his ninth of the season. Ryan Weathers (1-2) earned his first win as a Yankee, scattering five hits over 7 1/3 innings. Ragans (0-4) tied a career-worst seven runs allowed in 4 1/3 innings. Ragans also issued a career-high eight walks and yielded four hits while throwing six strikeouts for the Royals, who have lost seven straight and 10 of 12. Tigers 6, Red Sox 2 Dillon Dingler finished a triple shy of the cycle on a 4-for-5, four-RBI day and Framber Valdez pitched six innings of one-run ball, leading Detroit to a win over host Boston. Detroit rocked four total extra-base hits — including fifth-inning homers by Jahmai Jones and Dingler — off Boston’s Garrett Crochet (2-3), who had allowed a career-worst 11 runs in his last start on April 13. The southpaw did strike out eight Tigers but allowed five runs on seven hits through five frames in his second straight setback. Matt Vierling and Javier Baez also had multiple hits for the Tigers. Valdez (2-1) struck out seven across his six innings of three-hit ball, with a Willson Contreras home run marking the only Boston run against him. Braves 4, Phillies 2 Michael Harris II collected three hits, including a home run, as visiting Atlanta secured a three-game sweep of Philadelphia Phillies. Grant Holmes worked into the fifth inning and five relievers put up zeroes for Atlanta, which has won nine of its last 11. The Braves outscored the Phillies 16-3 in the series. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has dropped nine of its last 11. The Phillies managed only six hits, highlighted by Kyle Schwarber’s two-run homer. Pirates 6, Rays 3 Mitch Keller (2-1) pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs to help lead Pittsburgh to a win over Tampa Bay. Bryan Reynolds backed up the pitching with two hits and three RBI to lead Pittsburgh’s bats, while Spencer Horwitz and Nick Yorke each hit solo home runs. The Pirates did it with the long ball and small ball, as they recorded three bunt singles in a game for the first time since 1998. Rays starter Shane McClanahan (1-2) allowed four runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. Junior Caminero hit a solo home run. Nationals 3, Giants 0 Curtis Mead hit a two-run homer as Washington beat visiting San Francisco to avoid a series sweep. Andrew Alvarez (1-0), called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Rochester, pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to combine with PJ Poulin and Miles Mikolas for the shutout. Keibert Ruiz had two hits. San Francisco’s Robbie Ray (2-3) gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Rafael Devers and Drew Gilbert had two hits each for the Giants, but the team went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Guardians 8, Orioles 4 Jose Ramirez swatted two solo shots for his franchise-record 28th multi-homer game and Brayan Rocchio went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs as Cleveland defeated Baltimore for the third time in their four-game set. Matt Festa (1-0) got the final out in the fifth as he, Peyton Pallette, Erik Sabrowski and Shawn Armstrong combined for 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Starter Joey Cantillo allowed four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Ramirez hit both of his homers off Orioles starter Trevor Rogers (2-2), who gave up a season-high six runs (five earned) and six hits. Taylor Ward cracked a three-run homer, his first with the Orioles, to highlight a four-run fifth. Marlins 5, Brewers 3 Eury Perez scattered three hits, one walk and one unearned run over six strong innings as host Miami snapped a four-game losing streak with the win over Milwaukee. Perez (2-1) fanned seven and was staked to a 3-0 lead in the first as the Marlins took advantage of two hits, one walk, one hit-by-pitch, one error and one wild pitch. Kyle Stowers posted two hits in his season debut while Liam Hicks added two hits and one RBI. Jacob Misiorowski (1-2) struck out nine over five innings, but allowed four hits and three runs (one earned). Gary Sanchez stroked a two-run single in the eighth for the Brewers, who had their four-game winning streak come to a close. Reds 7, Twins 4 (10) Rece Hinds cracked a two-run double as Cincinnati scored three unearned runs in the 10th to complete a three-game sweep in Minneapolis. T.J. Friedl went 2-for-5 with a double, stolen base and three RBIs for the Reds. Starter Brady Singer gave up three runs over six innings. Emilio Pagan (2-0) allowed the tying run in the ninth while Graham Ashcraft collected his first career save. Victor Caratini posted two hits and two RBIs for the Twins, who took a 3-1 lead into the ninth. Garrett Acton (1-1) gave up just one hit and one walk over 1 2/3 innings, but was responsible for the three unearned runs in the 10th. Rockies 9, Dodgers 6 Mickey Moniak and Kyle Karros homered as Colorado rallied for the win in Denver and sent Los Angeles to its first consecutive losses of the season. Edouard Julien had three hits and three RBIs, Troy Johnston added two hits and Antonio Senzatela (1-0) pitched two innings of relief for Colorado. Starter Michael Lorenzen allowed seven hits and three runs over five innings. Max Muncy cracked three hits, Ryan Ward had two hits in his major league debut and Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland added two hits apiece for Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani increased his on-base streak to 51 games with two doubles. Blake Treinen (1-1) allowed three runs without getting an out in the seventh. Starter Roki Sasaki lasted 4 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three runs. White Sox 7, Athletics 4 Noah Schultz allowed one run and one hit in his second big-league start as Chicago claimed the rubber match over the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif. Schultz (1-1) fanned six and walked one during his five-inning stint to collect his first win. Munetaki Murakami cracked his eighth homer of the year and third in as many days to pace the White Sox offense. Derek Hill, Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery also homered. A’s starter Jeffrey Springs (3-1) struggled for the first time this season as he surrendered nine hits and seven runs over five innings. Darell Hernaiz homered while Zack Gelof knocked in two runs and scored another. Cardinals 7, Astros 5 (10 innings) Masyn Winn, whose two-out single sparked a four-run uprising in the fifth inning, delivered a bases-clearing double in the top of the 10th that lifted St. Louis over host Houston for a three-game interleague series sweep. Winn plated Ivan Herrera, Jordan Walker and Ramon Urias by driving an 0-1 fastball from Astros left-hander Bryan King (0-1) into the left field corner. Winn, a Houston-area native, finished 5-for-15 with seven RBIs in the series. The Astros countered the Cardinals’ four-run fifth by scoring three runs with two outs in the eighth. Yordan Alvarez ignited the comeback with his third home run of the series and 10th of the season before Jose Altuve singled and Christian Walker worked a 10-pitch walk. Isaac Paredes hit a two-run single off St. Louis closer Riley O’Brien (3-0) that tied the game at 4-4. Padres 2, Angels 1 Michael King allowed one hit over five shutout innings en route to his third straight victory and Mason Miller struck out two during a perfect ninth to pick up his eighth save as San Diego edged Los Angeles in the rubber game of their three-game series in Anaheim, Calif. King (3-1) walked four, hit a batter and struck out six before departing after throwing 105 pitches, 63 for strikes. Miller extended his scoreless inning streak that dates back to Aug. 6, 2025, to 32 2/3 innings, one inning short of the Padres record set by Cla Meredith in 2006. San Diego has won five straight series while improving to 13-2 over its last 15 games. Angels right-hander Walbert Urena (0-2) took the loss in his first major league start, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six-plus innings while striking out eight. Blue Jays 10, Diamondbacks 4 Kazuma Okamoto homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Nathan Lukes had three hits and three RBIs, and Toronto rode an eight-run first inning to a win over Arizona in Phoenix. Okamoto had a two-run double in the first and leadoff man Lukes had two hits in the frame, including a three-run double to cap the big inning off right-hander Ryne Nelson (1-2), who retired one of the 10 batters he faced. Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Jorge Barrosa hit a two-run homer and Adrian Del Castillo had two hits and an RBI double for the D-backs, who had won four in a row and 10 of 13. Barrosa replaced right fielder Corbin Carroll in the fifth after Carroll left with low back tightness, the Diamondbacks said. Manager Torey Lovullo said afterward that Carroll is fine and is scheduled to start their next game Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox. Mariners 5, Rangers 2 Bryan Woo pitched seven strong innings for his first victory of the season and was backed by three home runs as host Seattle defeated Texas to take two of three games in the series. Rob Refsnyder, J.P. Crawford and Randy Arozarena went deep to account for all the runs for the Mariners. Right-hander Woo (1-2) allowed two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out six. Andres Munoz struck out three in the ninth — the first reached base on a wild pitch — and got Evan Carter to ground out to first to earn his third save. The Rangers finally got to Woo in the seventh as Corey Seager led off with a walk, Wyatt Langford singled on a soft liner to left and, with one out, Joc Pederson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Josh Jung’s sacrifice fly to right spoiled the shutout bid and Carter’s double made it 5-2. Woo got Smith to ground to second to end the inning. =================================== COLLEGE BASKETBALL NCAA TOURNEY STAR BRAYLON MULLINS DECIDES TO CHASE NATIONAL TITLE AT UCONN INSTEAD OF HEADING TO NBA STORRS, Conn. (AP) — NCAA Tournament star Braylon Mullins will stick around one more season at UConn in hopes of winning a national championship instead of heading straight to the NBA. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard made his announcement Saturday on his Instagram account with highlight clips of his biggest shots and the words “unfinished business.” Mullins was projected to be a first-round pick. The 2025 IndyStar Indiana Mr. Basketball Award winner became a national sensation when he made a 35-footer with 0.4 seconds left to cap UConn’s incredible comeback to beat top-seeded Duke 73-72 to win the East Region title, sending the Huskies to their third Final Four in four years. But he had been a key player for the Huskies once he returned from an ankle injury that kept him out of UConn’s first six games. He was fourth on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game and also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals. He finished third on the team with 72 3-pointers, five behind Alex Karaban who played in all 40 games and Solo Ball who played in 39. Mullins scored 15 points in a victory over Illinois before finishing with 11 in the national championship game loss to Michigan — with both games being played about a 30-minute drive from his alma mater, Greenfield-Central High School. =================================== GOLF JON RAHM LEAVES FIELD IN DUST, WINS LIV GOLF MEXICO CITY Jon Rahm saved his best round of the week for last, firing a 7-under-par 64 Sunday to pull away to win the LIV Golf Mexico City title on Sunday in Naucalpan, Mexico. Rahm, the tournament’s leader since the second round, finished the week at Club de Golf Chapultepec at 21-under 263, six shots ahead of fellow Spaniard David Puig (66). It was an all-Spanish top three, as Josele Ballester (67) placed third at 14 under. The two-time major winner continued his streak of six straight top-fives to begin the LIV season, including wins in Hong Kong and Mexico City and three second-place finishes. “I think a little bit of it is disbelief,” Rahm said. “I’ve performed poorly down the stretch on this course having a chance to win before, so it’s almost like I don’t let myself believe it. If you would have told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’d be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not have believed you because of how bad I played. Hell of an effort, and just what a Sunday.” Rahm led by two strokes after 54 holes and made sure he was in the driver’s seat early Sunday, going 5 under on a four-hole stretch. Following his first birdie at No. 2, his powerful drive at the 390-yard, par-4 third hole came to rest about 3 feet from the cup for a tap-in eagle. He made a 13-footer for birdie at the par-3 fourth hole and a 20-footer at the par-4 fifth. No one would catch him from there. Rahm finished his round with 11 pars and two back-nine birdies. “You need a lot of fight because even today on the scorecard it might look smooth,” Rahm said, “but the three-putt on 7, had to make a nice 4-footer on 8, the par on 9, the par on 10, that stretch right there could have been very complicated. “It’s true from then on I played very well and never really stressed, but the that was the key moment of the round.” It also marked the first time this season that Rahm’s individual success led to a first-place finish for his team, Legion XIII. Rahm’s team won this event for the third consecutive year. Legion XIII finished 45 under for the week, as two of Rahm’s teammates, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton and Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin, were part of a five-way tie for fifth at 11 under. The fourth team member, Caleb Surratt, was 2 under for the week. Collectively, they finished nine shots better than Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC. Puig powered the Fireballs’ score this week, carding four birdies and an eagle on his first 10 holes Sunday before petering out as he shot 5-under 66. “We’re youngsters, but we really are feeling like we really want to win,” Puig said of his teammates and countrymen, Ballester and Luis Masaveu. “We put a lot of hours behind it, and it’s just kind of great to see that it definitely paid off this week. “But yeah, I didn’t really feel at my best (this week). Today was by far the best day, how I hit it.” Bryson DeChambeau, who was 2 over par through three rounds, withdrew before the start of the final round citing a wrist injury. HANNAH GREEN HEATS UP LATE, WINS IN PLAYOFF FOR THIRD LA TITLE Australia’s Hannah Green stormed back from a six-shot deficit on the back nine and won a three-way playoff with a birdie putt to capture her third title in four years at the JM Eagle LA Championship on Sunday in Tarzana, Calif. Green defeated South Koreans Jin Hee Im and Sei Young Kim when the trio replayed the par-4 18th hole at El Caballero Country Club. Before that, Green made a late charge with four straight birdies and five in a six-hole span, and she needed help in the form of a bogey by then-leader Kim at the par-3 17th hole to create a tie at 17 under par. Green signed for 68, Kim settled for a 70 and Im had a 67 in the fourth round before they returned to the tee box for the playoff. While Im missed the fairway and the green, Green and Kim were in the fairway and Green stuck her approach reasonably closer than Kim. After Kim missed a long birdie try and cleaned up for par, Green’s putt in the 12-foot range curled right to left and dropped. Green, 29, has won three of the four editions of the LA Championship and three of her eight LPGA victories have come at the event. She claimed the 2023 and 2024 editions that were played at Wilshire Country Club, the former coming in a three-way playoff as well. “I’m definitely nervous,” Green said about experiencing nerves in a playoff. “I felt like that wedge (second shot) probably flew a little bit further because of the nerves from within. No, I don’t think I would be doing this or be in contention if I wasn’t nervous. Those are the feelings that you want when you’re out here. That’s what makes you want to just do it over and over again.” Green was 12 under for the tournament while starting the 11th hole. Kim eagled that hole to push the lead to 18 under, but Green made birdie before getting on a white-hot run with birdies at Nos. 13-16. “Felt like I was doing what I kind of said I wanted to do yesterday: Hit more greens,” Green said. “Felt like it was quite difficult to get it close to the green. I felt like I was giving myself good opportunities but I had so many downhill putts and you just can’t really be aggressive with them. “I honestly didn’t think I was in the tournament still. I was just like, ‘Oh well, just go for as many pins as possible,’ and got on a nice stretch there. … I’m just fortunate enough that I at least got into the playoff.” Green, Im and Kim all will benefit from Saturday’s surprise announcement that the CEO of JM Eagle, Walter Wang, was raising the purse by $1 million to a total of $4.75 million. Across women’s golf, only the major championships and the CME Group Tour Championship are more lucrative. South Korea’s Ina Yoon (69) finished one shot out of the playoff at 16 under. Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit (70) tied for fifth at 14 under with Haeran Ryu of South Korea (66). With her second win of the season, Green rose into third in the season-long Race to CME Globe points standings, behind only Nelly Korda and South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim. STEWART CINK SHOOTS COURSE-RECORD 63 TO WIN SENIOR PGA BY SIX Stewart Cink fired a course-record 63 to break away from the pack and win the Senior PGA Championship by six strokes on Sunday at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Cink, 52, began playing on the PGA Tour Champions less than two years ago and racked up six victories before this week, including two in 2026. Now the 2009 Open champion has his first senior major title, capping the week at 19-under-par 269. “It means a lot,” Cink said. “Obviously the game we play, your year is kind of broken down into the main events and then the major events. They’re all important, don’t get me wrong, but the majors just have a little bit more history behind them. There’s more rounds. The golf courses are usually set up a little bit more testing and exacting, like Concession. Then there’s more players. You know, simply there’s just more players you have to beat. “It means a lot to me to be attached to a trophy like this.” Cink shot rounds of 69, 67 and 70 Thursday through Saturday to become part of a four-way tie — one shot behind 54-hole leader Keith Horne of South Africa. After his first birdie of the day came at the par-3 fourth, Cink went eagle-birdie-birdie at Nos. 7-9 to launch himself into the lead. He didn’t slow down on the back nine, adding four birdies while avoiding bogeys. His birdie at the par-5 17th and par at the final hole gave him the 63, beating the course record set by Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau when Concession hosted the PGA Tour’s Workday Championship in 2021. Concession will host the Senior PGA again in 2027 and 2028. Cink nodded to the course’s nickname, “The Concussion,” earned for its difficulty. “There’s never been a day at Concession that is not difficult,” Cink said. “It’s a hard golf course. I think the nickname is well-known out there. I don’t need to say it. “It’s been a pleasure being here. I felt like I played pretty well every day. My tee-to-green game was pretty similar every day. Today I just had a little bit better rhythm in my putting, and the ball just found the hole.” Ben Crane (68) was the distant runner-up at 13 under. He had three birdies and a bogey on each side of the card, unable to keep up with Cink’s torrid birdie pace. It was the 50-year-old’s first start at a senior major. “Man, it couldn’t have been more rewarding, encouraging, fun,” Crane said. “Just, like, man, I don’t get any more excited than that. Things were going the right direction. Had a solid day today. “I didn’t know Stewart was that far ahead. I thought I was in it, and then I signed my scorecard and I’m like, ‘Oh, I got beat by a mile.’ But we’re in second, so that was good.” Australians Scott Hend and Steve Allan each shot 71 Sunday and tied for third at 11 under. Horne plummeted on a back nine that included three bogeys and a double bogey; he shot 75 and tied for fifth at 8 under with New Zealand’s Steven Alker (68) and Pat Perez (69). =================================== AUTO RACING SAVED BY A SPIN: TYLER REDDICK NEEDS OT AT KANSAS TO CLAIM FIFTH WIN It’s still more than a week until May, but Tyler Reddick already has racked up a fistful of wins. The 23XI Racing hotshoe passed Kyle Larson in overtime to win the NASCAR Cup Series’ AdventHealth 400 on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Kan. for his fifth victory in nine races. After Cody Ware spun while leader Denny Hamlin and second-place Reddick were coming to the white flag for the race’s only caution for cause, the field pitted to set up a green-white-checker finish in overtime at Kansas Speedway. From third, Larson charged past Hamlin on the restart to claim the lead. But second-place Reddick used his No. 45 Toyota to fly by Larson’s No. 5 Chevrolet in Turn 1 after the white flag. He held on to beat the Hendrick Motorsports driver by 0.118 seconds for his 13th career win and become the first driver since Dale Earnhardt in 1987 to claim five of a season’s first nine races. Reddick also won for the fourth time in a row when being the polesitter – a run that began Feb. 22 in Atlanta and included victories at Circuit of The Americas and Darlington. Reddick appeared doomed with a few laps left when he screamed over the radio that he was out of gas, which allowed Hamlin to make what appeared to be the winning pass for the lead. However, Ware’s spin sent the cars to pit road one last time. “Just really blessed with the late caution,” said Reddick, who led only 10 laps and spun a Toyota stablemate in overtime’s frantic finish. “Not thrilled that I got Christopher Bell. … These late-race restarts get really crazy. Obviously, I had a run on the 5, and I was just shocked to get to his inside.” Larson’s car would not turn in the corners. “It all worked out great, but I was plowing in (Turns) 3 and 4,” said Larson, the race’s defending winner who became the track’s all-time lap leader — he paced 78 of them — but had his winless streak stretch to 33 races. “Reddick was really good there (at the end).” Chase Briscoe, Hamlin and Bubba Wallace completed the first five finishers. A Toyota won for the sixth time in the past 11 races at the Midwest speedway. Polesitter Reddick, Hamlin and Briscoe showed Toyota supremacy early with the first two drivers swapping the lead. Then Hamlin stormed away to a 1.25-second lead 15 circuits into the 267-lap race. Hamlin lapped up to the 21st-place car — Todd Gilliland — as drivers such as Joey Logano, Kyle Busch and Ross Chastain all were put a lap down. Larson was able to pass Reddick, but Hamlin claimed the 80-lap Stage 1 over Larson followed by Reddick, Ty Gibbs and Christopher Bell. In the second segment, Larson began to assert himself. He immediately snatched the point from Hamlin and led until Lap 125 when he, Hamlin, Chase Elliott and Reddick pitted to split Stage 2’s 85 laps. The completion of the second stage also was rather tame. Larson claimed the segment followed by Hamlin, Reddick, Elliot and Bell as the only problems were drivers having minor setbacks with tires. The only cautions through the first two stages were for stage-breaks, not incidents. On Lap 175 shortly after the restart for the run to the race’s end, Bell maneuvered by Hamlin for the lead. Wallace and Reddick rounded out a four-car Camry train with six of the top nine being Toyotas. Running third to leader Bell and Reddick, Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Briscoe began the cycle of pits with 52 laps remaining to set up the finish while Reddick and Bell waited five more circuits for service. ALEX PALOU CREDITS PIT CREW IN 1ST-EVER WIN AT LONG BEACH Alex Palou doesn’t have many “firsts” left to chase in the IndyCar Series, but he captured one Sunday. The star driver from Spain won the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach for the first time, beating polesitter Felix Rosenqvist to the checkers by 3.9663 seconds on Sunday in Long Beach, Calif. It marked the 22nd victory of Palou’s career and his third this season through five races. The four-time IndyCar Series champion finished second at Long Beach last year and third in 2024. “It’s huge, it’s huge. Super proud of everybody’s job, but especially these guys, this crew, they gave me the win today,” Palou said in his post-race interview. “… Incredible, incredible to finally win here at Long Beach.” The key for Palou was passing Rosenqvist off pit road during the race’s final pit stops. The Swede led a race-high 51 laps, but Palou, who started third, took over late and led 32. “It was that yellow, it was that pit stop with all the pressure that these boys were able to do it and execute it perfectly,” Palou said of his pit crew. Rosenqvist was left with mixed emotions after he underperformed in his first four races, finishing between 12th and 19th each time. “End of the day, it’s great,” Rosenqvist said. “Tough start on the year. Came back here, tried to bounce back. Got a podium, P2. “A little bit of a bittersweet race. I’m not sure exactly what happened, we lost a little bit in the stop. Alex is obviously gonna be 10 out of 10 almost every stop, so I don’t think it was necessarily that our one was slow, but they probably had a great one as well.” Veteran driver Scott Dixon of New Zealand came in third for his first podium of the year. Palou grew his points lead to 17 points over Kyle Kirkwood, who finished Sunday’s race in fourth. =================================== INDIANA HEADLINES/RELEASES INDY IGNITE FISHERS, Ind. (April 19, 2026) – The top teams in Major League Volleyball squared off tonight in a much-anticipated encounter at a sold-out Fishers Event Center, but it wasn’t much of a battle. The first-place Indy Ignite handled the second-place Dallas Pulse in four sets, sweeping their season series and lowering their magic number to clinch the No. 1 playoff seed to two. Indy upped its record to 19-5 while Dallas fell to 18-7 (with four of those losses to Indy). Any combination of Ignite wins and/or Pulse losses totaling two in the remaining two weeks of the regular season secures Indy the top seed in the four-team MLV Championship scheduled for May 7-9 on Dallas’ home court. Indy steamrolled Dallas in the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-18, sending the home crowd of more than 6,500 into a frenzy. Led by opposite hitter Azhani Tealer’s 10 kills, eight from outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh and six by outside hitter Anna DeBeer, Indy hit at a 47.8 percent kill rate with 31.0 percent efficiency in the opening two frames. Meanwhile, the outstanding Ignite defense limited hard-hitting Dallas to an 18.8 percent kill percentage with a meager 1.6 percent efficiency. The Pulse rebounded to win the third set 25-22 and then jumped ahead 5-0 in set four. That’s when the Ignite put the hammer down once more, going on a 10-1 spree to take control. They eventually won the set 25-21 on Tealer’s game-high 19th kill for the 3-1 match victory. “They’re a very, very good team,” Indy head coach Lauren Bertolacci said of Dallas. “I am shocked that we’ve swept them in the season. They played really well in the third and the fourth set, and it took us to have to adjust and get into another gear. They switched their lineups around a little bit, so at the end of the day, I was very, very happy with what we tactically executed today.” Tealer, the reigning MLV Player of the Week, led the Ignite in scoring for the fourth straight match, combining for 19 kills and a block to reach 20 points (also for the fourth consecutive match) and blasting away for a hitting percentage of 61.3 percent with 45.2 percent efficiency. Middle blocker Lydia Martyn started for the first time in seven matches as she worked back from a foot injury and responded with 10 kills, five blocks and a service ace. Member-Meneh finished with 13 kills and two blocks. Setter Mia Tuaniga passed around 55 sets – one off her season best in a four-setter – and padded her stat sheet with nine digs, four kills and two aces. She once again enjoyed distributing the scoring wealth to an array of teammates. “Every hitter is available and I just have full trust in everyone,” Tuaniga said. “Even if someone struggles for one or two plays, it doesn’t ever diminish after that. They’re always hungry and I can just feed whoever and it’s going to have a night like that.” Member-Meneh’s 16 digs led four Ignite players in double digits, as Tealer, DeBeer and libero Elena Scott recorded 11 apiece. Bertolacci was equally as pleased with her team’s defensive effort as with the offense. The Ignite limited Dallas’ Mimi Colyer and Sofia Maldonado Diaz, who rank 1-2 in MLV in kills and points, to a combined 23 kills, 27.7 percent kill percentage and 8.4 percent efficiency. As a team, Dallas hit at just 29.1 percent and was 13.4 percent efficient. “We did what we needed to do and we kept Mimi and Sofia down under .200 (efficiency), and that’s always going to put us in a good position to win,” Bertolacci said. “We did a lot of work to make sure that would happen. We did a really good job in defense tonight, and that was very important. Shout out to Elena, who had a phenomenal match, honestly.” That, Tealer added, was all according to plan … game plan, that is. “Our staff works very hard to come up with game plans and put us in positions to defend outside hitters and a team like that,” Tealer said. “When they come up with game plans like that and we trust it and we execute it, it’s going to turn out really well.” The Ignite make their final road trips of the regular season in the coming week, heading Thursday to Orlando (7 p.m. ET on Roku Channel) and Sunday to Atlanta (3 p.m., CBS Sports Network). They close with a pair of home matches, against Columbus on May 1 and San Diego on May 3. For ticket information, visit IndyIgniteVB.com. Tickets for the 2026 MLV Championship, set for Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas, are on sale via the MLV Ticketmaster website. Prices start at $19 and provide access to both the semifinal and championship rounds. Dotel was signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 13, 2020, out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He had his contract first selected on Nov. 18, 2025. ===== PAPILLION, Neb. – Drew Waters homered and tripled to help lead the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 4-2 triumph over the Indianapolis Indians on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park. The defeat dropped the Indians to 2-4 on the road trip. Waters proved to be a factor for Omaha (11-9) both at the plate and in the field. With the game tied at one in the third inning, he clubbed his second home run of the season to put the Storm Chasers in front for the first time. The homer was a towering blast that sailed 417 feet. With the game tied at two in the fifth, he tripled to open the frame and scored on Luca Tresh’s single. The glove was flashed by Waters in the top of the seventh as he saved Omaha’s lead with a lunging catch in the right-center field gap. Alika Williams would’ve likely scored to tie the game, instead Waters’ catch ended the rally and threat. Indianapolis (6-15) saw a potential big inning in the first wipe away, and it set the tone offensively for the afternoon. Tyler Callihan and Ronny Simon opened the game with singles to put runners at the corners, but the Storm Chasers used a double play to limit the top of the first damage to just one run. The Indians briefly tied the game in the top of the fifth on a double from Nick Cimillo. That two-base knock proved to be the first of only two extra-base hits for Indy in the game. Bailey Falter (W, 1-0) earned the win as the Omaha bullpen worked four and two-thirds scoreless innings. Eric Cerantola (S, 5) worked around a two-out double in the ninth to earn the save. Noah Davis (L, 1-3) took the loss as he conceded a pair of runs before he was removed in the fourth inning. A homestand is next on tap for the Indians, who return to Victory Field on Tuesday night. The series-opener against the St. Paul Saints is slated for 6:35 PM. ================================= INDIANA FOOTBALL INDIANA DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR RESPONDS TO COMMENTS FROM EX-ALABAMA QB TY SIMPSON OVER ROSE BOWL LOSS Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines heard the comments from former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson about the teams’ matchup last season in the Rose Bowl and responded with his own observations this week. Haines used his social media account to call out Simpson for saying he didn’t think the Hoosiers’ defense was terribly complex in their 38-3 rout. Simpson was speaking on a podcast hosted by former Ohio State safety and ex-Tide teammate Caleb Downs. Indiana handed Alabama the most lopsided bowl loss in program history while limiting the Crimson Tide to their lowest scoring total in a bowl game since the 1960 Bluebonnet Bowl against Texas ended in a 3-3 tie. Simpson was 12 of 16 for 67 yards and ran three times for 17 yards before leaving with a cracked rib. Alabama’s offense produced 193 yards and rushed for only 23. As Simpson and Downs wait to find out where they’ll start their NFL careers, Simpson took some time to explain what he thought happened in Pasadena, California. “From my point of view, I was like, they don’t do much,” he said. “They do the same thing every down. So when I got the ball, I knew exactly what was going to happen. They just didn’t mess up, bro. They were in the exact same spot they were supposed to be. They were so well-coached. “It was so much different than the SEC. In the SEC, they’ll play man, they’ll do these unorthodox coverages. That’s kind of how it is. That game was crazy to me. Of course, I got hurt. So that was a bummer. I knew what they were going to do. We couldn’t really run the ball, didn’t really throw. It was just so crazy to me how it happened.” Haines then explained how it happened. “Adorable,” Haines said in his social media post. “We also saw everything they were doing, on every single snap… It’s just that we exploited those cues. And didn’t get frozen and crushed by them.” Alabama fans pushed back against Haines, the Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant. He wasn’t impressed with what the Tide fans said, either. “That’s all it took to break your entire fanbase?” Haines wrote. “Wow.. maybe I should’ve just said ‘Boo.’ No apologies, no compliments. Grow up folks. He had a bad take and I said the painful truth. Bounce back better.” The Hoosiers beat Oregon in the next round of the College Football Playoff and then topped Miami in the Hurricanes’ home stadium to capture their first national championship. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner, is expected to be the first overall selection in Thursday night’s NFL draft. A school-record nine Hoosiers, including receiver Omar Cooper Jr., attended the NFL scouting combine in February. Cooper and Downs are widely expected to be first-round picks. Some analysts project Simpson as the No. 2 quarterback in this year’s class. Indiana is preparing for its annual spring game Thursday night and opens the season Sept. 5, hosting North Texas. Alabama opens its season at home Sept. 5 against East Carolina. ================================== INDIANA SOFTBALL IOWA CITY, Iowa ––– Indiana and Iowa had a low-scoring battle on Sunday (April 19) afternoon as Iowa won game three of the series, 4-2, at Bob Pearl Field. After missing some opportunities earlier in the game, Koskie redeemed himself with an RBI single through the left side to score freshman second baseman Landen Fry. The hit served as the winning run in a 5-4 victory for the Hoosiers (18-22, 6-12 B1G) on Sunday (April 19) at Bart Kaufman Field. The Boilermakers (28-11, 15-6 Big Ten) posted their seventh straight win in Big Ten play while also winning for the 10th time in their last 11 conference games. Purdue has swept Northwestern and OSU (19-19, 9-9 Big Ten) over back-to-back weekends, registering consecutive series sweeps for the first time since reeling off three in a row during the program-record 11-game Big Ten win streak in April 2024. The Boilermakers swept a series vs. Ohio State for the first time since May 1987, breaking out the brooms against an OSU team that entered the weekend having won eight of its last nine in Big Ten play. Purdue improved to 19-6 since March 10, winning all six of its Big Ten series during that stretch. The Boilermakers scored in the first inning for the third day in a row and held the lead at the end of the final 26 innings of the series. The Buckeyes’ only lead of any kind was 1-0 after the top of the first Friday; Purdue tied it the bottom half of the frame and did not trail again at any point for the rest of the weekend. Jackson Bessette homered for the second day in a row, extending the Boilers’ lead to 3-0 with a leadoff blast in the seventh inning. Quincy Malbrough blew the game open the following frame with three-run double. Klug (6-1) struck out four over six-plus shutout innings in his finest performance at Alexander Field in his two seasons as a Boilermaker. He retired eight consecutive batters from the fourth through sixth innings, a stretch that began with the first of two 6-3 double plays turned by shortstop Westin Boyle. Klug is unscored upon in the last 12 innings in which he was physically on the mound. He was charged with two runs after handing the ball off to the bullpen in the seventh inning last Sunday in a win at Northwestern. Avery Moore delivered an RBI single to plate Eli Anderson in the first inning, hitting safely and driving in a run in all three games of the series while extending his hit streak to nine consecutive games. The right fielder also registered his second outfield assist of the series, teaming up with Boyle and third baseman Sam Flores to cut down Ellis Lee at third base for the final out of the second inning. STREAKS EXTENDED • Eli Anderson: 15-game hit at home • Avery Moore: 14-game on-base; 9-game hit; 13-game on-base in Big Ten play; 8-game on-base at home; 7-game hit in Big Ten play; 6-game hit at home • Sam Flores: 13-game on-base in Big Ten play • Quincy Malbrough: 10-game-hit; 10-game on-base at home; 9-game hit at home; 8-game hit in Big Ten play • Westin Boyle: 9-game on-base; 7-game hit; 7-game hit in Big Ten play; 6-game on-base at home • Zach Zychowski: 6-game on-base in Big Ten play • CJ Richmond: 5-game on-base at home SERIES LEADERS • Sam Flores: 5-for-9, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, HBP, Sac Fly, 2 SB; scored a run in all 3 games • Avery Moore: 5-for-11, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 4 R; hit safely & drove in a run in all 3 games • Zach Zychowski: 5-for-11, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, HBP, 2 R, 10 defensive assists • Eli Anderson: 5-for-12, 2B, 4 RBI, BB, 5 R, Sac Bunt, 3 SB; hit safely & scored a run in all 3 games • Quincy Malbrough: 5-for-12, 2B, 6 RBI, HBP, 2 R, SB • Jackson Bessette: 3-for-13, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, SB Both of the 6-3 double plays by Boyle helped squash any potential momentum for the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s first two batters reached base safely to begin the fourth inning but Klug rolled up the ground ball and Boyle turned the chopper near the second base bag into a pair of outs. Three innings later, Graham Kollen got two outs with the first pitch he threw in relief of Klug. It was a more impressive individual defensive effort from Boyle while eliminating the leadoff base runner. Kollen went on to retire all five batters he faced while putting two zeros on the board. The grad transfer worked 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief over three appearances this week, surrendering just two singles. Boyle and Zach Zychowski teamed up to create Purdue’s second run of the day. Boyle reached on a hustle double into short left center and Zychowski followed with an RBI single up the middle. Zychowski contributed an RBI single in his first at-bat on both Saturday and Sunday while racking up five hits over the final two games of the series. He also doubled into the right field corner in the fifth inning Sunday. Ohio State broke up the shutout with back-to-back home runs from its 3-hole and cleanup hitters with one out in the ninth inning. Noah Furcht and Dane Harvey also went back-to-back in the fifth inning Friday. The Boilermakers close out their five-game homestand Tuesday with a midweek rematch vs. Indiana State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET as a $3 midweek matchup ($3 beers, hot dogs, popcorn). =================================== PURDUE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The fifth-leading scorer in the nation is a Boilermaker. Wickstrom is the second Australian in Purdue history after Abbey Ellis, who became the first transfer to score 1,000 points in a Boilermaker career. =================================== NOTRE DAME SOFTBALL SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Notre Dame softball team (19-27, 8-13 ACC) fell in heartbreak fashion in Sunday’s series finale, falling 3-2 to Syracuse after winning the first two games of the series. Jayce Lee had an infield single and moved to second on an errant throw to start the fourth. Brandon Logan used a sacrifice bunt to move Lee to third, and Dylan Passo singled to left field for the 2-0 Irish advantage. Florida State drew even in the bottom of the fourth with a single and a home run to make it a 2-2 game. Oisin Lee came in and shut the door on a scoring chance by inducing a soft groundout to end the inning. The Irish broke the tie in the top of the fifth. Bino Watters drew a lead-off walk before Brandon Logan drew a two-out walk for the Irish. Dylan Passo reached on a dropped third strike to load the bases, and Jamie Zee laced a single to center field, driving in both Watters and Logan on the play. Oisin Lee and Noah Rooney both made the Seminoles strand a runner on first base in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, as the Irish continued to hold the 4-2 lead. Florida State pushed four runs across in the bottom of the seventh to gain a 6-4 advantage late. Will Jaisle retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth. The Jaguars erased an early deficit and broke open a tie game with a four-run sixth inning to secure the win. IU Indy finished with 11 hits on the day, matching Robert Morris’ total, but capitalized on key opportunities late. IU Indy struck first with a pair of runs in the opening inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Molly Kable and Callie Dickerson. However, Robert Morris responded with four runs in the bottom half to take an early lead. The Jaguars answered right back in the second, plating two runs to even the score at 4-4. After the Colonials regained a 6-4 advantage in the fourth inning, IU Indy steadily chipped away. Alexa Holman delivered a clutch performance at the plate, driving in four runs, including a game-tying two-RBI single in the fifth inning. With the score knotted at 6-6, IU Indy seized control in the sixth. Kennedy Cowan’s RBI double gave the Jaguars the lead, and the offense continued to capitalize on defensive miscues, pushing across four runs in the frame to build a 10-6 cushion. In the circle, Lily Roush was dominant in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits to earn the win. Offensively, Holman led the Jaguars with three hits and four RBI, while Paige McPhearson reached base four times and scored twice. IU Indy will return to action on Tuesday when the Jaguars travel to face Purdue. ================================== BALL STATE BASEBALL KENT, Ohio – The Ball State baseball team got out to a 2-0 lead on a Charlie Keller home run in the second inning but fell 8-5 to Kent State in the series finale at Schoonover Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (19-20, 13-8 Mid-American Conference) scored first for the first time in the set against the Golden Flashes (28-10, 15-6 MAC) when Max Kalk walked and Keller drilled an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right field for the early 2-0 edge. The hosts responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and would lead by at least three runs for the remainder of the contest. Ball State tacked on single tallies in the fourth on a Kenskey Thomas solo homer and seventh on an RBI double from Ryan Muizelaar. Trailing 8-4 entering the ninth inning, the Cardinals had runners on second and third after a double by Keller with one out but could only score one run on a wild pitch. Zander Bretza (1-2) started on the mound for the visitors and allowed five runs in 1.1 innings pitched to suffer the loss. Ripken Reese, Sawyer Solitaria, Brody Williams and Luke Matthews notched two hits each for the Golden Flashes, who got home runs from Williams and Nolan Belcher. Ben Rabatin (5-1) struck out five in 5.0 innings of three-run ball to be credited with the win, and Peyton Williams came on to strike out the final two batters of the game to earn his fourth save of the season. The next scheduled game for Ball State is Tuesday afternoon against Indiana. ================================== BALL STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL The Ball State men’s basketball team and head coach Chris Capko have announced the addition of Central Arkansas transfer Javion Guy-King to the program. Trailing 6-5 after Wright State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Sycamores put two in scoring position with two outs as Jeremy Martinez and Nomar Garcia both walked and stole third and second respectively. Mason Roell worked the full count against Wright State reliever Malachi Paplanus before driving the ball to the left center wall scoring both Martinez and Garcia to put Indiana State back in the lead. Beck followed greeting reliever Brody Papay (0-1) with a line drive home run over the right field wall to put Indiana State ahead 9-6. After the Raiders took two back in the bottom of the eighth off Cy Turner’s two-run home run, the Sycamores rallied again in the top of the ninth. Carter Beck and Emil Estrella both walked and Caden Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out. Nick Sutherlin coaxed a bases-loaded walk scoring Beck, before Colin Sander’s sacrifice fly scored Estrella to put the score at 11-8. Justin Hoff (S, 2) made the lead stand as the right-hander retired all six batters he faced in order of the final two innings with the final out setting in Caleb Niehaus’ glove in left field to close out the save and secure the Sycamores’ first three-game over Wright State since 1980. Indiana State jumped ahead in the top of the first inning as Nick Sutherlin (RBI single) and Jeremy Martinez (two-run double) got the Sycamore offense going early. Wright State took the 4-3 lead in the second aided by an Indiana State throwing error on a play at the plate allowing three runs to score. The lead went back-and-forth as both teams scored twice in the fifth inning with Emil Estrella driving in Nomar Garcia on a sacrifice fly, before Mason Roell scored on a failed pickoff attempt with the ball rolling into the Wright State dugout. The Raiders answered with Andrew Duncan’s RBI triple and Braylen Blomquist’s RBI single to retake the lead and set up the Indiana State late-game offense. Mason Roell doubled, drove in two RBIs, and scored two runs to pace the Sycamore offense, while Carter Beck, Nick Sutherlin, and Jeremy Martinez all recorded two RBIs in the game. Four different Sycamores scored two runs apiece, while Carter Beck, Jeremy Martinez, and Nomar Garcia all stole bases in the game. Wright State took the lead back in the bottom of the second as Zac Butler singled in Braylen Blomquist, before three runs scored on Keegan Holmstrom’s bases-loaded single thanks to a throwing error to give the Raiders the 4-3 lead. Indiana State went back ahead in the top of the fifth as Emil Estrella’s sacrifice fly to right field brought home Nomar Garcia, before Mason Roell scored on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt that went into the Wright State dugout to make it a 5-4 Sycamore lead. The Raiders added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 6-5 as Andrew Duncan tripled in Gus Gregory, before Braylen Blomquist singled home Duncan to put Wright State back in the lead. The Sycamores rallied back in the top of the sixth as Mason Roell connected on a two-run double to the wall in left center bringing home Jeremy Martinez and Nomar Garcia, before Carter Beck took a two-run home run to the scoreboard beyond the right field wall to put Indiana State ahead 9-6. Cy Turner connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring Zac Butler to pull Wright State back within 9-8. The Sycamores loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning with Nick Sutherlin bringing in the first run on a bases-loaded walk, before Colin Sander’s sacrifice fly scored Emil Estrella to provide the final 11-8 scoring margin. Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) went 4-for-4 at the plate, including his third home run of the week, to lead the Aces at the plate. Reagan Reeder (Ramsey, Minn./Illinois) delivered the big blow for Evansville, crushing a three-run home run with two outs in the eighth to extend the Aces’ lead to four. Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) was outstanding the mound, getting the win with six strong innings. The left-hander limited the Bruins to one run on five hits, striking out a season-high nine. Chris McCormack (Naperville, Ill./Iowa Central CC) dominated in relief, picking up a nine out save with six strikeouts while allowing only one hit. HOW IT HAPPENED The game was a pitcher’s duel early, with Deverman and Belmont starter Tate Marland trading zeroes in the first two innings of play. Evansville got on the board first in the third inning when Haire launched a no doubt solo home run to right field. The home run was his third of the week. Belmont answered right back in the home half of the inning, using a solo home run of their own to tie things up at one. Following 1-2-3 innings from both sides in the fourth, Evansville regained the lead in the fifth when Cooper Rhodes (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a bases loaded double play. Belmont threatened in the home half of the fifth, putting two on with two outs. However, Deverman delivered a strikeout to escape. Deverman found himself in another jam in the sixth, with runners at the corners and nobody out. Once again, Deverman found a way to escape, striking out two before inducing a groundout to keep Evansville in front. McCormack took over for Deverman in the seventh, striking out the side. Haire’s big day continue in the top of the eighth, as the Aces’ center field led the inning off with a double. Following a fly out and a ground out, the Bruins elected to intentionally walk Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and pitch to Reeder. Reeder made them pay, crushing a three-run home run to right center field and make the score 6-1 in favor of Evansville. The Aces added another insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) before McCormack shut the door in the ninth to seal the series victory. With the win, Evansville has now won all four of their MVC series and sit in a three-way tie with Murray State and Indiana State atop the conference standings. UP NEXT Evansville will meet crosstown rival USI on Wednesday at USI Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ================================ SOUTHERN INDIANA BASEBALL EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball completed a series over the University of Tennessee at Martin with a 10-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 22-18 overall and 6-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference this season, while UTM goes to 19-2o, 6-9 OVC. Sunday’s victory is career-win number 400 for USI Head Coach Chris Ramirez. Ramirez is 400-249-1 during his 13 seasons (49-47 at USI; 152-80 at Lenoir-Rhyne; and 199-122-1 at Illinois Springfield). USI got on the scoreboard early with home runs in the second and third innings. Graduate centerfielder Khi Holiday sent a two-run drive over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead in the second, while graduate leftfielder/rightfielder Noah Foster blasted a three-run shot over the same wall for the 5-0 lead after three frames. The home run was the first of the year for Holiday and the second of the year for Foster. The Screaming Eagles increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning on a groundout by senior first baseman Patrick McLellan to score Holiday. The Skyhawks closed the gap in the sixth to 6-1 and in the eighth to 6-3. USI would respond with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the eventual 10-3 victory. Junior catcher Drue Saenz and Holiday highlighted the frame with a two-run single and a RBI-single, respectively. On the mound, junior right-hander Ean DiPasquale was dominant through seven innings, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. DiPasquale (3-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and three walks, while striking out five in seven-plus frames of work. Senior right-hander Andres Gonzalez finished the game on the mound for the Screaming Eagles and posted his fourth save of the season. Gonzalez, who is tied for first on the team in saves, allowed a hit and a walk in 1.1 innings to close out the game. Up Next for the Screaming Eagles: The Screaming Eagles close out the four-game homestand Wednesday when they host the University of Evansville for a 6 p.m. first pitch. The Purple Aces are 15-22 overall and 8-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference after taking two of three from Belmont University this weekend. The Aces lead the all-time series with the Screaming Eagles, 36-32, after the two programs split the season series last season, 2-2. ============================== VALPO WOMEN’S TENNIS Tennis Closes Out Season in Winning Fashion, Clinches Program’s Highest Win Total in 20 Years The Valparaiso University tennis team sent out its seniors and head coach Bob Modesto in style, downing visiting UNI 6-1 in Sunday morning’s season finale at The Courts of Northwest Indiana. The victory was the program’s 12th of the season, marking the team’s highest overall win total since 2006. Following the match, seniors Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Westside) and Madi Rogers (Clearwater, Fla. / Florida Virtual [Bradley]) were recognized as part of a Senior Day ceremony. Rogers spent her final collegiate season with the Brown & Gold after transferring from Bradley, while Silva was a four-year member of the program and cemented herself among the program’s all-time greats. Modesto coached the final match of his 36-year coaching career including seven seasons at Valpo, as he began his retirement at the conclusion of Sunday’s match. How It Happened Valpo prevailed on all three doubles courts, making quick work of the Panthers at No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 2 duo of Silva and Brynn Steven (Wichita, Kan. / Bishop Carroll) was first to finish, getting an early break to go up 2-1 and adding a later break that expanded the lead to 5-2 before serving to clinch the match in a 6-2 victory. At No. 3, Andrea Delgado (Richmond, Texas / Foster [Dallas Baptist]) and Rogers rattled off five straight games to close out the match with a 6-1 victory. Valpo had clinched the doubles point thanks to the wins on the second and third courts, but they played out the No. 1 doubles match as Lacey Tanner (Fort Pierce, Fla. / Florida Virtual School) and Alexandra Popa (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) engaged in a tightly-contested showdown. UNI went up 2-0 with an early break, but Valpo broke right back to get back on serve at 2-2. The match stayed on serve until Valpo broke to go up 5-4 and serve for the match. The Panthers broke back to tie it at five games all, and Valpo had a triple break point at 15-30, but UNI battled back to win a deuce point and go up 6-5. Valpo held serve to send it to a tiebreak. UNI went up a mini-break at 2-1 early, but the Panthers then split service points to make it 3-2 and Valpo held on its first serve to make it 3-3 as the teams switched sides of the court. Valpo held on the second serve as well, then UNI split serves and Valpo served out the tiebreak, winning 7-4 on the breaker. Junior Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) dropped two total games in her match, pulling away to beat Kayla Santos 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 in the first match to finish. The No. 5 Singles match saw Delgado capture a straight-set victory over Abbie Peterson, 6-3, 6-1. Valpo secured the team victory when Steven finalized a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Andrea Noa Galin at No. 4. Shortly thereafter, Tanner closed out her 2-0 weekend at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Yangjiaxin Li. The top two courts were the last matches in action, and Popa wrapped up a triumph over Lucia Schuknect, winning two close sets, 6-4, 6-4. A tense first set at No. 1 saw the players exchange breaks midway through the set, and it stayed on serve until Silva broke to go up 6-5, serving for the set. UNI’s Andjela Raznatovic broke to send it to a tiebreak, and Silva built up a 5-1 lead in the breaker as the players switched sides of the court. Raznatovic rallied to win a nip-and-tuck breaker 9-7, then took the second set 6-3. Inside the Match The team finished with 12 victories, the program’s highest single-season win total since 2006, when Valpo finished 15-8 overall and undefeated in Mid-Continent Conference play en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. This season not only marked Valpo’s highest overall win total since joining the Missouri Valley Conference prior to the 2018 season, but also the program’s highest overall win total since joining the Horizon League prior to the 2008 season. Valpo finished with a .600 winning percentage, the program’s best since the team that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2006. Valpo tied for the program’s highest conference win total since joining the Missouri Valley Conference and since joining the Horizon League. This year’s league win total tied for Valpo’s highest since going 5-3 in 2007, the program’s final year in the Mid-Continent Conference. The home team has won the last five head-to-head matches between Valpo and UNI, as this victory allowed Valpo to flip a 5-2 defeat from last season in Cedar Falls. The 6-1 win was Valpo’s most lopsided victory against a Division-I opponent since April 7, 2024 vs. UNI, also 6-1. Valpo finished the season with back-to-back victories, winning each of the final two matches of a season for the first time in program history. This marked Valpo’s first set of back-to-back league victories at any point on the calendar since wins over UNI and Missouri State in April 2022. Silva closed out her collegiate career with 57 collegiate doubles wins, ranked third in program history behind only Claire and Olivia Czerwonka. She finished her career with a 57-46 doubles record, (.553), finishing eighth in program history in career doubles winning percentage. Silva finished 15-8 in doubles this season, good for a .652 winning percentage that ranks tied for 10th in program history for single-season doubles winning percentage. Silva finished with 16 singles wins this season and 68 in her collegiate career, the second most in program history behind only Olivia Czerwonka. She went 68-36 in singles over her four years at Valpo, finishing with a singles winning percentage of .654 that ranks seventh all-time. Silva’s doubles win on Sunday allowed her to finish her collegiate career with 125 combined victories between singles and doubles. Delgado led the team in singles victories this season, going 18-6 overall including 16-3 in dual matches. She boasted a team-best 5-2 conference record, ending the season with three straight wins. Delgado finished one win away from cracking the program’s all-time top 10 for single-season victories, as her 18 wins puts her tied for 11th. By virtue of her 18-6 singles record, Silva finished with a .750 singles winning percentage, tied for the ninth best in a single season in program history. Delgado became just the third Valpo player in the last 20 years to win at least 75 percent of her singles matches in a season, joining Jelena Vujanic (2017-18 and 2018-19) and Oliva Czerwonka (2023-24). Fernandes finished third on the team with 11 singles wins, going 4-2 in conference play and 9-5 in dual matches. She has 37 total singles wins over her first three seasons. Tanner polished off her perfect weekend in singles, becoming the fourth Beacon with double-figure singles victories this season by notching her 10th of the year. Modesto finished with 58 career dual match victories in seven seasons after taking over a program that had won 28 total dual matches in the 12 seasons prior to his arrival. Modesto had at least 10 victories in four of his seven seasons after the team had won no more than five matches in a season in the 12 years prior to his arrival, peaking with his highest win total and the program’s highest in 20 years this season by recording the 12th victory of the season in his final collegiate match. =============================== VALPO SOFTBALL The host Drake Bulldogs held the Valpo softball team’s bats in check in the series finale between the two teams Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa, as the Beacons were held to just three hits in a 3-0 defeat. How It Happened Marissa Jackson (Willis, Mich./Huron) singled with one out in the top of the first and advanced to second on a groundout, but ended up being stranded there. That proved to be Valpo’s lone runner in scoring position of the day. The Beacons got a runner on base in the second, third and fifth innings, but none of them were able to advance past first base. Drake got the only run it would need on a two-out unearned tally in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs added a two-run single with two outs in the second for the final margin. Some nice defensive work from the Beacons in the middle innings kept the deficit at three runs. With a runner on first and one out in the fourth, Madison Vrastil (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) snagged a sacrifice attempt just before it hit the ground and threw to first to double off the runner. Then, the fifth inning featured diving catches by Kyndal Shively (Bloomington, Ill./University) in left field going back to the warning track and by Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]) laying out to her right on a line drive at first base. Inside the Game Valpo won the opening game of a three-game MVC series before dropping the final two games for the fourth time this season. The Beacons were held to just three hits, as Vrastil and Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]) joined Jackson in getting base knocks. Lopez took the loss in the circle, falling to 6-7 this year as she threw the first two innings. Behind her, Kayla Purdy (Matthews, N.C./Porter Ridge) threw two shutout innings, and Caitlyn Quickle (Leesburg, Ohio/Fairfield Local) and Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) had a scoreless inning apiece. Next Up Valpo (17-27, 5-16 MVC) steps out of conference play on Wednesday as it faces its second Big Ten foe in midweek action, traveling south to take on Indiana. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT. ================================ VALPO WOMEN’S GOLF The Valparaiso University women’s golf team played the first 18 holes of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Sunday at the par-72, 5954-yard TPC at Deere Run course in Silvis, Ill. Junior Keira Cotter (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Guelph [Lake Superior State]) had the team’s top Round-1 score. Sunday featured challenging weather conditions, and the beginning of the round was delayed by frost. How It Happened Cotter finished the day with an 84, owning the team lead by one stroke. She is tied for 36th of 55. Cotter, who missed much of the season with an injury, birdied the 15th hole. Freshman Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) was second on the team, one stroke behind Cotter with an 85. Senior Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan) started her final collegiate tournament with an 87 in the opening round. She birdied the par-4 11th hole to highlight her round. With two rounds to go, Valpo is in 11th on the team leaderboard with a 346. Murray State leads the way at 304, while Ella Scherer of the Racers and Alyssa Mixon of Bradley hold the top spot as each player carded a 73 in the first round. Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy “This was a lot of golf course today and tough conditions. We’ll put in a lot of practice this evening and hopefully be better prepared for tomorrow.” Up Next The Beacons will play the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Monday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. There is anticipated frost on Monday morning, so tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT. A link to live scoring via Clippd will be available on ValpoAthletics.com. ================================== VALPO BASEBALL The Valparaiso University baseball team received not one, but two masterful pitching performances on Sunday at Curtis Granderson Stadium in Chicago, but host UIC walked off with a 5-4 victory in 12 innings. Nick Baffa (Glenview, Ill. / Notre Dame College Prep) carved seven innings of one-run ball while striking out six and left in position for the win. UIC tied the game with a three-run homer in the eighth, before Dalton Swinehart (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) entered the game and kept Valpo alive as he ripped off 4 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run, as the only tally that crossed the dish against him was the unearned, game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th. How It Happened Valpo jumped in front with four runs in the opening inning, climbing out to a 4-0 lead. The Beacons worked four walks in the opening frame, three of which were issued to players who eventually came around to score. Louie Kegerreis (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) smoked a two-run double down the first-base line, Thomas Cooper beat the shift with a single through the right side and George Betevis (Hanover Park, Ill. / Bartlett) bounced a ground-rule double over the wall in right center. Cooper likely would have scored on Betevis’ two-base hit had the ball not bounced over the wall leading to Cooper stopping at third, where he was ultimately stranded as UIC went to the bullpen with one out in the top of the first and Valpo up 4-0, and the Flames got out of the inning without further damage. It was shades of two years ago when an unlucky bounce on a ground-rule double at Curtis Granderson Stadium was the biggest play of an 8-6 Valpo loss as a Carson Husmann double would have tied the game if it weren’t for the bounce over the wall. Freshman Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) continued to add to his recent highlight-reel as he laid out in right center to take an extra-base hit away from UIC’s Lucas Smith, helping Baffa work a scoreless second after the Valpo righty had retired the side in order in the opening inning. UIC relievers retired the first 11 batters they faced, keeping the Valpo lead at four through four. In the bottom of the fourth, UIC had its best chance of the day to that point, loading the bases before Baffa recorded a huge strikeout as the Flames stranded the maximum and the 4-0 advantage remained intact. The Valpo middle infield turned an inning-ending double play in the fifth, but UIC got on the board when Ashton Kampa led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to right. Baffa finished his day with a 1-2-3 seventh, punctuating his outing with his sixth strikeout to end his final inning of work. Two of the three batters who came to the plate against a Valpo left-handed reliever reached base, and then Valpo brought in a righty, and the first pitch he delivered was launched for a three-run, game-tying home run by Thomas Curry to make it 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth. Swinehart was the third Beacon to take the mound in the eighth and retired the first two batters he faced to get out of that inning. He stayed on for the bottom of the ninth and posted a zero with a pair of looking strikeouts, sending the game to extra innings. Junior Brayden Pleau (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly) tripled into the right-field corner to lead off the top of the 11th, but he was stranded as back-to-back Beacon strikeouts accounted for the first two outs of the frame before UIC shortstop Sean Cody made an incredible play to take a go-ahead single away from Cooper. Swinehart put up another zero in the bottom of the 11th, sending the game to a 12th frame. The Beacons used a leadoff walk and a sac bunt to get a man into scoring position in the top of the 12th, but he was stranded at second. An E6 to lead off the bottom of the 12th proved costly as that runner eventually scored the winning run on a two-out single. Inside the Game Senior Eli Riley (Zanesville, Ind. / Norwell) extended his on-base streak to 20, becoming the first Valpo player to reach base safely in 20 consecutive games since Ryan Maka did so in 22 straight in 2024. Baffa’s outing was the longest of the sophomore’s collegiate career, outdoing his previous long of five innings on April 4 at Washington. Valpo starting pitchers had career highs in innings pitched in two of the three games this weekend, as Adam Guazzo did so on Friday. Baffa struck out six, tying a career high set on April 3 at Alabama State. He allowed just one walk while scattering seven hits with the only run against him coming on a solo homer. Swinehart took the tough-luck loss despite a final line that featured 4 1/3 innings of three-hit ball while walking two, striking out six and permitting just one unearned run. His 4 1/3 innings eclipsed his previous season high of 3 2/3, which came in his Valpo debut on Feb. 14 at Gardner-Webb. He had 11 strikeouts total in 18 innings this season and no more than two in any one game before striking out a season-high six on Sunday. Valpo pitching recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts with Baffa and Swinehart splitting the dozen evenly at six apiece. Valpo left-hander Christian Hack (Oak Forest, Ill. / Tinley Park) snapped a stretch of six straight scoreless outings as he had not been charged with any runs in 6 1/3 innings over his previous six games before Sunday. This was Valpo’s first extra-inning game since April 6, 2025 vs. Illinois State. This was the team’s first time playing at least 11 innings since April 30, 2024 at Western Michigan, a 15-inning nightmare. Pleau’s triple was his first of the season and his 14th extra-base hit. Betevis had two of the team’s six hits and reached base three times. He enjoyed his third multi-hit effort in his last six contests. Valpo fell to 1-9 this season and 2-18 over the last two seasons in one-run games. UIC’s starting pitcher retired only one batter, so the Flames bullpen was forced to work 11 2/3 innings. After Saturday’s game took only 1 hours, 55 minutes, this one required a lengthy 3 hours, 58 minutes. Saturday was Valpo’s shortest game of the season and Sunday was Valpo’s longest game of the season. Up Next The Beacons (9-26, 2-10 MVC) will host Western Michigan on Tuesday at 3 p.m. with free admission at Emory G. Bauer Field. The game will also air on ESPN+. =========================== UINDY BASEBALL INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Indianapolis baseball team (24-18, 15-9) fell to the University of Missouri-St. Louis (23-18, 17-7) with a final score of 10–7 on Sunday at Bill Bright Field.
