Smotherman, who was the second-round leader, had an eagle putt from inside 16 feet on the final hole but settled for birdie. He ended up with 69 on Saturday. Lowry and Smotherman take 13-under 200 scores into Sunday’s final round at PGA National’s Champion Course. Taylor Moore (67 on Saturday) and Colombia’s Nico Echavarria (66) are one stroke back. Lowry was 6 under through 10 holes and then tacked on birdies on the last two holes. Smotherman, 31, is bidding for his first victory on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut in three of his four previous tournaments this year. Echavarria’s bogey-free round put him in position to contend for his third tournament title on the PGA Tour. Jimmy Stanger (65) is at 11 under, while Ricky Castillo (64) and Canada’s A.J. Ewart (68) sit at 10 under. Joel Dahmen (68) is four shots off the lead. Stanger turned in a rather tame round with a bogey on No. 2 and then seven birdies the rest of the way after Friday’s adventure that included two eagles and two double-bogeys. Defending champion Joe Highsmith shot 76 and is in 67th place at 5 over. Tee times for the third round were moved up several hours because of weather-related concerns for later in the afternoon. The first and 10th tees were used as starting points. AUSTRALIANS HANNAH GREEN, MINJEE LEE TAKE LEAD IN SINGAPORE Australians Hannah Green and Minjee Lee took the third-round lead at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, sitting atop a crowded leaderboard in Singapore on Saturday. The Sentosa Golf Club course played tough on a steamy day in the high 80s, with Green’s 68 tied for the low score of the round. Lee shot a 69, and the two sit at 11-under 205. Their lead is one stroke over American Angel Yin (68) and Haeran Ryu (70) of South Korea. Ariya Jutanugarn (71) of Thailand is alone in fifth place at 9-under. American Auston Kim, who led after the first two rounds, shot a 73 to fall into a tie for sixth with Sweden’s Linn Grant (71) at 8-under. Green is chasing her second win in Singapore following a victory in 2024. After a bogey at No. 10, a hole that challenged the golfers all day, Green recorded three consecutive birdies to surge to 11-under. But it wasn’t easy. “It was tricky with the pins today and the wind changed throughout the round,” said Green, whose husband is making a rare appearance as her caddy this week. “It was tough out there. I’m not surprised by the scoring. I felt like I played really well today.” She will play the final round with Lee, her compatriot. “I’ve been hitting the ball into the greens, so if I can continue to do that, and even though I’m playing with Minjee — we are good friends — I don’t want to get too caught up in what her scores are. I want to do my thing and hopefully keep making birdies and make lots of putts.” Lee, who has 11 career wins, is making her 2026 debut after taking extended time off in the offseason. She, too, noticed the increased difficulty of the course on Saturday after shooting 64 on Friday. She mixed four birdies with a bogey at the troublesome No. 10. “I felt like it was playing a little more trickier today for some reason. Maybe the pin placements were a little bit tougher,” she said. “I know a few of the tees were up but it just felt like they were a little bit harder than the last two days.” ===================================================================== INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES PACERS BASKETBALL GAME PREVIEW: PACERS VS GRIZZLIES The Indiana Pacers (15-45) return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday to close out a four-game homestand with a matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies (22-36). Toppin will remain on a minutes restriction as he returns to game shape after a 55-game absence due to injury. Bennedict Mathurin led Indiana in scoring with 26 points, but left the game with an injury, and Indiana fell to 0-2 in its second game of the season. The Pacers trailed by eight points at halftime, 60-52, but allowed 68 points in the second half. Indiana scored just 19 points in the fourth quarter, and committed 13 turnovers to the Grizzlies’ six. The Indiana Baseball team (4-7, 0-0 B1G) shared victories with Western Kentucky (7-5, 0-0 CUSA) over 18 innings of baseball at Nick Denes Field. Pitching decided the story in the opening contest before the bats broke out to the tune of 26 combined runs in the nightcap. IU won the first game 3-1 before dropping the second effort 14-12. With a four-game weekend, and both teams holding starters for Sunday, bullpens were put to the test on Saturday evening. IU won the first game of the day by scattering four hits and one run across the nine innings. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold earned the win after recording 10 outs. IU’s offense battled in the second game but couldn’t overcome an early four-run deficit. IU trimmed the lead to two on multiple occasions but never got past the final step. In total, eight IU pitchers got into the game on Saturday. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Kaden Jacobi and freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski limited damage by allowing just two runs over the final four innings in game two of the doubleheader. The Hoosiers hung 12 runs on the board via 14 hits but went down quietly in the ninth while trailing by two. Western Kentucky also used eight pitchers on the day. IU will look to split the series on Sunday (March 1) afternoon in Bowling Green. Senior right-handed pitcher Jackson Bergman will need to be great as the Hoosiers play their fifth game in five days. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT as the month of March begins in college baseball. Game 1: Indiana 3, Western Kentucky 1 Recap – Game 1 When it needed it the most, the Indiana Baseball team (4-6, 0-0 B1G) delivered a pair of fantastic at-bats in the eighth inning. Redshirt junior outfielder Ayden Crouse had a sacrifice fly before redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts singled home another in a 3-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon. The Hoosiers pitched it fantastically to begin the day, getting another great start from sophomore southpaw Brayton Thomas. He tossed 4.2 innings, conceding just one run on a solo home run. He was followed by graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold (W, 1-0). Seebold recorded 10 outs, scattering just two hits with no runs allowed. Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry (SV, 1) recorded the final three outs in a save. IU had multiple chances to score early in the game but it took until the eighth inning to find the go-ahead runs. Ricketts had his second three-hit day in the last four games. Sophomore catcher Hogan Denny, sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley and sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie all had multi-hit efforts. The win was the second time this season where IU has allowed just one run in a victory. Game 2: Western Kentucky 14, Indiana 12 Recap – Game 2 With both teams deep into the bullpen, the bats took centerstage in the night cap. Western Kentucky (7-5, 0-0 CUSA) scored four runs in the first inning and led the entire way for a 14-12 victory. The Indiana Baseball team (4-7, 0-0 B1G) scored multiple runs in four different innings but could never get the deficit smaller than two. IU went quietly in the ninth as the home team held on for a victory. Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley continued his hot streak at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to trim the lead to two. Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Fellow sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie led the team with four RBIs. Every starting position player had a hit. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Reagan Rivera (L, 0-2) was hoping to continue the trend of great starts from IU’s rotation. His day ended after just an inning of action. He worked into the second frame but didn’t record an out. He gave up six hits and was tagged for five runs. Graduate student right-handed pitcher Kaden Jacobi and freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski gave up just two runs over the last four innings. The second game of the doubleheader was the first time IU has played a game where both teams have scored 10-or-more runs since March 29, 2025 (vs. USC – L, 12-13). Before this contest, IU had allowed just nine runs in the last 27 innings on the mound. Inside the Box Score – Game 1 • IU recorded its fourth game of the season with double-digit hits. • The Hoosiers allowed one run on the mound for the second time this year. • Four different players had multi-hit games. • IU’s pitching staff had eight strikeouts with just three walks. • After a solo home run, IU recorded the final 15 outs without giving up a run. Inside the Box Score – Game 2 • IU’s pitching staff walked nine batters compared to just one from Western Kentucky. • Both teams had double-digit runs and double-digit hits. It was IU’s fifth game this season with 10+ hits. • The six extra-base hits for IU were the most in a game this year. Notes to Know • Graduate student right-handed pitcher Gavin Seebold continues to be brilliant in relief this season. He earned his first win of the year by tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball on Saturday afternoon. He has begun the year by working 11.2 frames without allowing a run. Seebold is the first IU pitcher since Ryan Kraft (March 25-April 15, 2023) to have four consecutive scoreless outings of at least two innings. • Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny hit his third home run of the season in the second game of the doubleheader, part of a four-hit day in total. He has five multi-hit games on the season and has base knocks in nine of the 11 games for IU this year. • Redshirt freshman designated hitter Brayden Ricketts is on a roll as of late. He’s recorded hits in seven-straight games. In that stretch, he has a pair of three-hit efforts (vs. Notre Dame, at Western Kentucky – 1). 11 of his 13 hits this year have been singles but he did have an RBI double in the loss to the Hilltoppers on Saturday evening in Bowling Green. • Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie has had RBIs in just four of the 28 career games he’s hit in. However, three of those four games have been multi-RBI efforts. That includes a four-RBI day in the second game of the doubleheader with a two-run single and a two-run double. Up Next The final game of a long four-game weekend comes tomorrow (March 1) afternoon at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on the Indiana Sports Radio Network via IUHoosiers.com/Audio. ====================================================================== INDIANA SOFTBALL INDIANA PICKS UP TWO MORE WINS ON THE WEEKEND GREENSBORO, N.C. ––– Indiana Softball’s Saturday looked a lot like its Friday, picking up two dominant victories. Haley Painter walked before Anna Moore launched a two-run home run to left-center, pushing the advantage to 6–0. Purdue put the game away in the sixth with a four-run frame. Douglas doubled to right-center to score Polar, and after a fielding error extended the inning, Moore crushed her second home run of the day — a three-run shot to center — to cap the scoring at 10–0. After the first inning, the Boilers did not let Lipscomb score again, quickly piling on the runs. The Boilers did not stop, continuing to tack on runs as Delaney Reefe sent a homer over the left-center wall, her second of the year. The Boilermakers (7-3) have won five straight games dating back to their Feb. 21 walk-off win vs. Baylor in which they overcame a 5-0 deficit. They’ve won six times in walk-off fashion while compiling a 25-5 record at the North Main Athletic Complex in Holly Springs dating back to 2022. Purdue trailed 10-6 entering the bottom of the ninth after the Red Foxes (0-9) scored six unanswered runs across the eighth and ninth innings. The Boilermakers also overcame a four-run deficit (5-1) in the ninth in a March 2022 victory vs. Longwood in Holly Springs, eventually winning 6-5 in 11 innings. Free passes and wild pitches fueled Purdue’s five-run ninth inning as the only hits in the frame were Sam Flores’ leadoff single and a pinch-hit RBI single from Aaron Manias that put the winning run on base. As a pinch runner for Manias, Sergio DeCello scored the game-deciding run on a wild pitch that was also ball four to batter Jackson Bessette, who was the seventh consecutive batter to reach base safely in the frame. Marist did not record an out in the inning. The Boilermakers drew 16 free passes – 11 walks, five hit by pitch – in the victory, a big reason why they were able to win despite being out hit 12-7. Purdue also had 11 walks in a win vs. Niagara in Holly Springs last season. Pitching led the way in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Austin Klug and Noah Filer teamed up for a four-hitter. Klug retired 15 consecutive batters while working 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball. Filer retired the final nine batters of the game in order to earn a three-inning save in just his second collegiate outing. Offensively, doubles from Westin Boyle, Manias and Flores over the first three innings all led to runs. Purdue scored in each of the first four innings to build a 5-1 lead in support of Klug (2-1). The senior struck out six in his finest outing as a Boilermaker. CJ Richmond hit an opposite-field home run in the seventh inning of game 1, his team leading third long ball of the year. It extended his season-opening hit streak to nine consecutive games before it ended in the nightcap. Boyle delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap the scoring in Purdue’s four-run fourth inning, overcoming an early 3-0 deficit. He reached base safely three times in the nightcap. The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. SATURDAY’S LEADERS • Sam Flores: 3-for-7, 2B, RBI, BB, 2 HBP, 3 R • Eli Anderson: 2-for-5, 3B, RBI, 4 BB, 3 R, 4 SB • Westin Boyle: 3-for-9, 2B, 4 RBI, BB, R • Dylan Drake: 2-for-6, RBI, 2 BB, HBP, 3 R • Brandon Rogers: 2-for-6, 2B, RBI, 3 BB, 2 R • Ali Banks: 4 BB, 2 HBP, 2 RBI, 2 R, Sac Fly, Sac Bunt • Austin Klug: 5 2/3 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 6 K • Noah Filer: 3 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K • Graham Kollen: 3 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 3 K ======================================================================= NOTRE DAME HOCKEY KUMLIN NETS OVERTIME WINNER ON SENIOR NIGHT; IRISH BEAT #5/5 PENN STATE NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Fighting Irish hockey team of Notre Dame closed out their final homestand of the regular season with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over the fifth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in front of a sold out crowd for senior night. The scoring started early Saturday night as the Nittany Lions capitalized on a rebounding puck off the blocker of sophomore goaltender Nicholas Kempf to take a 1-0 lead 2:58 into the game. The Irish special teams unit saw their first action of the night at the 5:29 mark in the period when Penn State went to the box for two minutes on a holding call. Notre Dame had two scoring chances to even up things on the scoreboard with the first from junior forward Evan Werner whose shot sailed just wide of the net. The second came off the play of freshman Pano Fimis and Cole Brown, but Fimis’ pass missed the stick of Brown by a few centimeters as the man-advantage expired. As the midway point in the frame came, Notre Dame had another strong chance to get on the score board when four Irish skaters crashed the net. They had multiple shots in the span of five seconds that were blocked or deflected by the PSU goaltender, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Notre Dame’s penalty kill unit went to work with 8:34 left in the period as junior forward Carter Slaggert was sent to the box for slashing. During the minor penalty, Nicholas Kempf made a pair of saves to keep PSU from extending the lead further. The first was off the right blocker pad and the second was a snag with his glove as the penalty time expired keeping it 1-0 Penn State with just over six and a half minutes to play in the frame. The Irish equalizer came with 1:50 left before time expired as junior forward Maddox Fleming let the puck rocket off his stick into the upper left corner of the Nittany Lion goal. The score looked to be knotted heading into the first intermission as time wound down and ticked under 60 seconds to go in the frame. With 25 seconds left in the first stanza, Penn State would go to the box for slashing. The Notre Dame powerplay made the best of their second opportunity on the man advantage, scoring off the stick of junior captain Danny Nelson. Nelson found the back of the net with six seconds left in the period off of a pass across the crease from Evan Werner to give the Irish a 2-1 lead heading into the first break. Notre Dame began the middle period of the contest the way that they ended the first, by getting into the offensive zone and creating opportunities to extend the lead. The first chance of the period came off the stick of Pano Fimis as the freshman tried to use his backhand to sneak the puck around the post, but was denied by the PSU goalie. After the first few minutes were underway the Irish penalty kill went back to work after a kneeing minor penalty. During the kill the special teams squad had a shorthanded chance when graduate forward Sutter Muzzatti and junior alternate captain Cole Knuble connected, but the shot was deflected to the right of the Penn State net as the kill carried on. Notre Dame’s powerplay unit got a third shot at action after a slashing call was assessed to the Nittany Lions with 8:45 remaining in the second period. The Irish had an opportunity to extend the lead to 3-1 but could not capitalize on the man-up chance. As the advantage expired, Penn State found the equalizer to make the contest a score of 2-2 back at even-strength hockey. A chance for the Irish to reclaim the lead came as Danny Nelson crashed towards the net and was brought to the ground but made his shot from his backside. Nelson and the PSU defender collided with the Nittany Lion netminder and play was blown dead. Upon video review the ruling was no goal for the Irish to keep things deadlocked at two goals a piece. With just over two minutes to go in the second, both teams would go to the penalty box creating a four-on-four opportunity. No harm would come to the Irish in the penalty despite a chance in front of the net from Knuble, but he lost the puck in front of the PSU net. The period would end on a scoring attempt from Sutter Muzzatti, but was saved as the buzzer sounded as both teams would head to the locker room tied 2-2. The final period began with a series of back and forth possessions from the Irish and Nittany Lions, but neither team could find a chink in the armor of the goalies in net as both were making saves and being backed up by strong defensive efforts. Nicholas Kempf denied Penn State from gaining the advantage on the scoreboard at 6:52 into the frame as he snagged a puck that was fired from the blue line out of the air to set up a defensive zone faceoff. After another pair of minor penalties on both teams there was a second four-on-four skating segment. This time the Irish took advantage of one less skater on the ice. Danny Nelson notched his second goal of the night with 9:17 gone in the period to give the Irish the 3-2 lead. The junior was set up by Knuble and senior alternate captain Axel Kumlin as the puck snuck between the PSU tender and the left post to give Notre Dame the advantage going into the final ten minutes of the third. As he faced a solo skater with just over four minutes left to play and away from the crowd of Irish and PSU jerseys to the left of the goal, Nicholas Kempf won the one-on-one battle with a Nittany Lion when he deflected the puck with his left blocker into the corner of the Irish zone to hold the lead, 3-2. Penn State would find the equalizer late though, getting the tying goal with 2:15 left to play in regulation when a shot from the top of the zone beat Kempf to his right to make it a 3-3 game. Despite a few late chances, both teams headed to overtime for the second night in a row. In the three-on-three overtime frame Notre Dame did not wait long to get chances on net. The Irish registered all three shots on goal in the overtime session, holding the Nittany Lions off the Irish netfront before Axel Kumlin would be the hero of the night just 47 seconds into overtime. His shot beat the PSU goalie as he laid out to stop the play, but the senior’s wrister found the back of the net to secure a 4-3 victory for the Irish to close out senior night. GOALS Maddox Fleming opened the scoring for the Irish Saturday as he recorded his second goal of the season on an equalizing goal late in the first period. Set up by senior captain Michael Mastrodomenico off of a PSU turnover, Fleming did not hesitate to let the puck fly and rip past the goaltender to tie things up. Danny Nelson notched his first goal of the night and 12th of the year with six seconds left in the first frame to give the Irish the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission. Cole Knuble dished the puck in deep to Evan Werner who was situated next to the left post and found Nelson open as he crashed the net from the opposite side and received the pass to bury the puck into the back of the PSU net. Recording his second of the night, Nelson broke the 2-2 tie with the Nittany Lions on a pass from Cole Knuble. As the skaters rushed up ice on a two-on-one advantage, Knuble secured the middle lane as the captain went up the left wing. Cole made the man bite as he dished the puck to an open Danny who let a one timer fly and beat the PSU goaltender as he slid across the crease. In the overtime period, senior Axel Kumlin ended the game for the Irish on a pass from Sutter Muzzatti in front of the net. With both skaters alone in front of the Penn State net, Muzzatti made a move to get the PSU goalie to shift enough to allow for Kumlin to rush in and launch the pass from Sutter into the back right corner of the net to finish the contest with a 4-3 win. KEY STATS Danny Nelson recorded his 18th multipoint game and his second two goal game of his career on Saturday night’s victory. Notre Dame controlled the dot for the second night in a row recording a 65.6-percent win rate from the face-off circle with Sutter Muzzatti winning 14 out his 16 opportunities. Nicholas Kempf recorded 26 saves in tonight’s contest, 11 of which came in the final period. UP NEXT The Irish hit the road for one final time this regular season on a short week’s rest for a matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both games in Columbus are slated for 6:30 pm puck drops on Thursday and Friday (Mar. 5-6th). ==================================================================== NOTRE DAME SOFTBALL IRISH LOSE IN HEARTBREAK FASHION AT GEORGIA TECH ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Notre Dame softball team fell in heartbreaker fashion Saturday afternoon, losing on a walkoff single to Georgia Tech. The Irish have four ranked wins this season and have held their opponents to single-digit scoring five times, including the 25-0 shutout against Central Michigan. The Irish were led by freshman Maura Irish, who finished with a career-high four goals and four points in the win. Her impressive stat line continued as she tied for a team-best three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Abby Lyons also tied for a team-best three ground balls and Julia Carr tied for a team-best three caused turnovers. Kate Timarky and Madison Rassas each recorded two goals and two assists apiece for a pair of four-point performances. Emma Murphy also scored two goals, followed by Charley Bacigalupo and Grace Maroney with a goal each. M. Irish would get the offense started as she put Notre Dame on the board, sparking a 4-0 run with goals from Rassas and Murphy followed by a free position goal from Timakry. The Irish held the Panthers scoreless through the first 12:55 of the game as Pitt wasn’t able to score until the 2:05 mark of the first period. While they were finally on the board to make it 4-1, Maroney answered by causing a turnover, recovering the ground ball, and taking it all the way to the house to make it 5-1. Pitt would score one last goal in the period to bring them within three at 5-2 heading into the second quarter. Notre Dame put away the two first goals of the second to extend their lead 7-2 with goals from Bacigalupo and M. Irish. Pitt countered with a goal of their own, but the Irish responded quickly as Wynter Jock found Rassas for another Irish goal to make it 8-3 with 9:05 remaining in the half. Pitt would go on to score three straight goals to make it a two-goal game, but Timarky would score one last goal to close out the half to make it 9-6 heading into the third period. Who other than M. Irish to get things started in the second half as she scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter, putting the Irish up by 11-6. The Irish and Panthers would each net one more goal in the third to make it 12-7 heading into the final period. Notre Dame had some looks in the fourth, and while Pitt would score two more goals, the Irish would secure the win 12-9. UP NEXT The Irish are back in action on Sunday, March 8 at No. 9/9 Clemson at 12:00 p.m. =================================================================== NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL IRISH BOUNCE BACK IN MAJOR WAY WITH 96-90 OT WIN OVER NC STATE SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-16, 4-12) bounced back in a major way on Saturday, defeating NC State (19-10, 10-6) in overtime, 96-90. Cole Certa, Jalen Haralson and Braeden Shrewsberry led a 2nd half offensive surge. The trio were the only three to score for Notre Dame, combining for 43 points on 14-26 shooting (53.8%). Then Cole Certa got hot in OT where he was 3-3 from beyond the arc, totaling 12 points. Certa finished with a game-high 32 points on 9-17 shooting, 6-10 from three, 8-9 from the free-throw line. The sophomore now has three 30+ point games in ACC play, which trails only Stanford’s Ebuka Okorie (4). Haralson poured in 20 in the second half to finish with 25 points, one shy of his career high. The freshman tied his career high mark from the free-throw line where he was 9-10. Haralson was 8-for-15 from the field. The Anderson, Indiana, native was one board shy of a double-double. Shrewsberry had 12 of his 16 in the second half and finished 3-6 from deep, 5-10 overall. Sir Mohammed rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. “I didn’t think we started the game the right way, but a couple of guys came in and spurred us in the first half to get back close and manageable,” Glenn & Stacey Murphy Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “I thought we scored it well, but I didn’t think we could guard them in stretches. Great adjustments from Coach Grady, Getter, Farrelly, Owens, to switch to zone late, force them to pass one more, and take some of their iso out. Great job from our guys to execute that and to keep scoring and attacking.” Coach Shrewsberry improves to 2-1 in OT games this season and 6-3 in three years in South Bend. HOW IT HAPPENED The NC State offense jumped out to a quick start offensively, hitting five of its first seven shots from the field to take an 11-2 early. It didn’t take long for Cole Certa to heat up coming out of an Irish timeout. The Irish sophomore knocked down three consecutive three pointers, including one from the corner, to cut the Wolfpack lead to just 13-11 at the first media timeout. Sir Mohammed checked in off the bench and provided a jolt to the Irish offense, scoring a quick six points to counter an NC State offense that opened up shooting over 50% from the field. Mohammed led all Irish players with 10 points at halftime. Notre Dame found success from behind the arc in the first half, hitting five of its first 10 from downtown. A pair of three pointers from Ryder Frost and Logan Imes cut into the Wolfpack lead. The Irish trailed by just one, 23-24, at the under-eight media timeout. After a Jalen Haralson layup tied the game at 25, the Wolfpack responded with an 8-0 run, in large part due to back-to-back three pointers from Tre Holloman. Braden Shrewsberry ended the run with a stepback jumper as the Irish were down six with 3:49 left in the first half. Shots were falling on both ends of the court to close the first half, as both teams combined to knock down the last nine shots from the field. NC State took a 44-38 lead into the locker room. Notre Dame got 15 points off the bench in the opening half, including 10 from Mohammed, who led all Irish scorers at the break. However, the Wolfpack forced nine turnovers (10-0 NCST pts off turnovers) and scored 20 points in the paint to give them the edge heading into the second half. NC State shot 60.7% from the field in the first half, 7-12 from three, and recorded 10 assists. Notre Dame was right behind that at 56.0%, 6-13 from beyond the arc. Notre Dame’s offense didn’t falter, opening up the second half 9-11 from the field, capped off by an 8-0 run to cut the NC State lead to just one, 59-60, with 12:38 to play. Haralson, Certa and Shrewsberry combined to score all 43 Irish points in the second half. A pair of Haralson free throws with 7:58 left made it 69-71 Wolfpack. The freshman scored eight straight points for Notre Dame to keep them within arm’s length of a potent NC State offensive attack. Haralson knocked down his first seven field goal attempts in the second half and finished with 20 points in the closing half. The Wolfpack immediately countered with a 6-0 run spanning 80 seconds, prompting a Coach Shrewsberry timeout with 5:55 left to play. Down 70-79, the Irish ripped off a 9-2 run to cut the lead to just two behind a pair of Certa free throws, a pair of buckets from Harleson and a three-pointer from Shrewsberry to make it 81-79 Wolfpack with 1:38 left. Notre Dame tied the game at 81-all thanks to two clutch free throws from Haralson to conclude a 7-0 run down the stretch. Moments later, the Irish defense came up with a huge defensive stop, collapsing on all drives to the rim to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Certa gave Notre Dame its first lead of the game. After forcing a Wolfpack miss at the other end, Imes grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball down the court, where he found a wide-open Certa, who buried the corner three to put the Irish up 87-84. That is when the Beacons made their move recording seven in a row to make it a 1-point game as the contest went into its final two minutes. A Casey free throw ended the stretch, but a 3-point play by McNair gave the Beacons a 75-74 lead with 1:37 remaining. The Beacons went up by three with 43 ticks left before Casey hit a triple with 20 seconds on the clock to tie the score. The Beacons retook the lead with just three seconds left, but UE had one final chance and Casey took advantage banking in a triple to give UE the win. The Aces shot 47.2% in the game while holding the Beacons to 43.4%. UE also had a 32-29 rebounding edge. On Sunday, the regular season comes to an end with a 3 p.m. game against Southern Illinois. ====================================================================== SOUTHERN INDIANA SOFTBALL SCREAMING EAGLES DROP DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST BRUINS NASHVILLE – University of Southern Indiana Softball dropped both games of a road doubleheader against Belmont University on Saturday, falling 8-4 and 5-0. The games were the Beacons’ final contests before starting MVC play next weekend. How It Happened – Western Illinois Just like their first game on Friday, it took the Beacons just two batters to take the lead in their Saturday opener. Madison Vrastil (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) led off the game with a walk and stole second before scoring on a Grace Hollopeter (Lake Village, Ind./North Newton [Purdue Fort Wayne]) double. Hollopeter eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Mack Gallagher (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East [MSU Moorhead]) to give Valpo a quick 2-0 lead. Hollopeter delivered her second RBI in as many innings in the top of the second, as her sacrifice fly plated Kim Rodas (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon). It was 4-0 Valpo through two and a half innings. Cadan Brinkman (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community [Campbell/Wofford]) led off the top of the third with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kayden Krug (Milford, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). WIU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, and then plated two more on a two-run single with two outs in the sixth to cut Valpo’s lead to 4-3. The Leathernecks took advantage of an error to put the potential tying run in scoring position with one out in the seventh, but Azalya Lopez (Corona, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt [MSU Moorhead]) notched back-to-back outs to close out the victory. How It Happened – Lindenwood The hosts scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would not relinquish. Rodas delivered an RBI single in the top of the second to cut Lindenwood’s lead to 2-1. The Lions got a two-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the third to extend their advantage to 4-1. Valpo went the next three frames without putting a runner into scoring position until piecing together a seventh-inning rally. Back-to-back walks led off the top of the seventh, and a Rodas single and subsequent Lindenwood error plated a run and put the potential tying runs in scoring position. But Lindenwood got the next two outs to finish up the win. Inside the Games Gallagher extended her on-base streak to open the season to 17 straight games, as she reached twice with a hit and a walk against WIU before walking twice versus Lindenwood. Vrastil’s stolen base versus WIU was her 15th in as many attempts this year and pushed her career mark to a perfect 32-for-32. Hollopeter had two hits and drove in two runs in the win over the Leathernecks, while Vrastil, Gallagher, Brinkman and Rodas all reached base twice via a hit and a walk. Sydney McDermott (Stout, Ohio/Portsmouth West) earned the win against WIU as she threw the first six innings to improve to 7-2 on the season. Lopez picked up the save with a shutout seventh inning, her second save of the campaign. Rodas went 2-for-3 in the finale against Lindenwood, while Gallagher drew two walks as the Beacons totaled just seven baserunners in the weekend’s final game. Caitlyn Quickle (Leesburg, Ohio/Fairfield Local) started and took the loss against the Lions as she threw the first 2.2 innings. Lopez tossed 3.1 innings of shutout relief. Next Up Valpo (9-8) opens MVC play next weekend at Southern Illinois, starting with a Friday doubleheader at 2 p.m. ===================================================================== VALPO BASEBALL LOCKWOOD TOSSES IMMACULATE INNING, SHUTOUT AS VALPO BEATS ALABAMA STATE Valparaiso University baseball redshirt junior Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) delivered a shutout and turned in an immaculate inning, striking out 11 in total to lead the Beacons to a 9-0 victory over Alabama State on Saturday night in Montgomery, Ala. The Beacon bats used a pair of four-run innings and outhit the Hornets 12-3. How It Happened Lockwood achieved one of baseball’s most uncommon feats in the bottom of the second, when he tossed an immaculate inning (one inning, three strikeouts, nine pitches.) He got each of the first two Hornets swinging before the final batter of the frame was caught looking. Alabama State did not notch its first hit of the game until the fourth. A squeeze bunt by Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) got Valpo on the board in the fifth, then Brayden Pleau (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly) stroked a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) clubbed a two-run double to right center, doubling the lead to four and completing a four-run frame. Lockwood retired the side in order again in the fifth and sixth innings, then Valpo added on in the seventh as Bennett led off with a single and eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Later in that inning, Riley had an RBI single to make it 6-0, then Javin Gauthier (De Pere, Wis. / De Pere) and Cal Schembra (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) added run-scoring singles to make it 8-0. In the top of the eighth, Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) added a two-out, RBI single to up the lead to nine. Lockwood put up zeros in the eighth and ninth innings to complete the CG, striking out the final two batters he faced. Inside the Game Lockwood’s immaculate inning was Valpo’s first since March 13, 2021 at Middle Tennessee, when Colin Fields had one as part of his no-hitter. Lockwood reached the 200-strikeout milestone for his collegiate career on Saturday. Lockwood’s 11 strikeouts were the most by a Beacon since he had 11 on Feb. 22 at Memphis. This marked Valpo’s first shutout since Bryce Konitzer on April 28, 2024 in a seven-inning game. It was Valpo’s first nine-inning shutout since Ellis Foreman on April 23, 2017. This was Valpo’s first complete game since Harry Deliyannis on April 26, 2025 at Belmont. In addition to yielding only three hits and striking out 11, Lockwood did not issue any walks. Pleau had his fourth multi-hit game of the season and recorded a season-high three hits. Schembra notched a pair of hits, his fifth multi-hit game already on the young season. Valpo has scored nine runs or more in four of its last five games. All nine Valpo batters in the lineup had at least one hit. This was the first time the Beacons shut out an opponent since April 19, 2019 at SIUE. Up Next The Beacons (4-5) will close the series at Alabama State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will air on SWAC TV. =================================================================== VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL EVANSVILLE BANKS IN BUZZER-BEATER AS VALPO DROPS REGULAR-SEASON FINALE IN HEARTBREAKING FASHION Fifth-year senior Brody Whitaker (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle [University of Indianapolis / Marian]) hit a go-ahead jumper with three seconds remaining in a game Valpo trailed by seven with under four minutes to play, but Saturday belonged to Evansville’s AJ Casey. The Purple Aces had to go the length of the court with just three ticks on the clock, but Casey beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to complete a 37-point performance and lift the hosts to an 80-79 win over the Beacons in the regular-season finale. How It Happened Valpo jumped out to an early 14-8 lead with 14:35 left in the first half. The Beacons hit six out of seven shots, including a big burst from Owen Dease (Evansville, Ind. / Evansville Reitz [Texas A&M Corpus Christi]), who scored 10 of the team’s first 12 points. After an early eight-point Valpo lead, Evansville tied the game with an 8-0 run to make it 14-all at the under-12 media timeout of the first half. Valpo went 3:42 without scoring. It remained tight as Justis McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West) hit a 3 to build the lead to six with nine minutes left in the first half, but UE’s Leif Moeller responded with a 3 of his own. Valpo led 23-21 at the under-8 media timeout. Freshman Rakim Chaney (Rockford, Ill. / Rockford Auburn [212 Sports Academy]) hit a big 3 at the 3:36 mark to put Valpo up five, then Whitaker knocked down the team’s eighth triple of the half to make it a 37-31 lead with 2:50 left in the half. Chaney was fouled just before the halftime horn and made two free throws to send the Beacons into the break with a 42-34 lead behind 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the rookie. Fellow freshman JT Pettigrew (Lisle, Ill. / Bolingbrook) did not play in the final 11 minutes of the half after he picked up his second foul. Pettigrew had four rebounds in just six minutes of first-half action. Evansville outscored Valpo 13-8 in an early stretch of the second half, as Casey remained on fire, upping his game total to 22 points with over 16 minutes remaining. The hosts tied the game at 50 on a 3 by Joshua Hughes with 15:27 left in the first half, then took the lead on another trey with 14:32 to go. It continued to go back-and-forth, and McNair hit a needed 15-footer with 11:23 on the clock to cut the UE lead to one. Evansville used an 8-0 run and built up an eight-point lead past the midway mark of the second half. Dease nailed a key 3 to slim the lead to four at 68-64 with 5:37 to play. Valpo clawed to within one when McNair hit two free throws with 2:23 left, and tied the game on a second-chance bucket by Pettigrew with 1:37 to play. Pettigrew was fouled on that game-tying basket and went to the line to give Valpo a 75-74 lead by completing the 3-point play. McNair made two more free throws to put Valpo up three at 77-74, then Casey hit his first of two late 3s with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 77. Valpo held for a last-second look and Whitaker knocked in the go-ahead jumper with three seconds to play, the second straight game Valpo hit a go-ahead shot in the closing seconds, before Casey won it following Evansville’s final timeout. Inside the Game Valpo had four players in double figures, led by 17 from the Evansville native, Dease, who had his highest scoring output since 18 on Feb. 6, also against the Purple Aces. Pettigrew, who shared the team lead with Dease, scored 15 of his 17 points after halftime after being limited by first-half foul trouble. He scored in double figures for the seventh straight game and had at least five rebounds for the 11th straight game, finishing with six boards. Chaney tallied double figures for the fourth straight game, finishing with 13 points. He handed out five assists to lead the team. Whitaker was in double figures for the sixth time in his last seven games, finishing with 12. Evansville made its first 20 free throws of the game and went 21-of-22. Valpo was 24-of-28 at the stripe for 85.7 percent. That free-throw percentage was Valpo’s best since Nov. 29 vs. Western Michigan and the 24 makes were the team’s most since 26 on Jan. 7 vs. Illinois State. Casey’s 37 points were the most by a Valpo opponent since Mercer’s Jake Collon had 37 in a triple overtime game on Nov. 29, 2013 and the most by a Valpo opponent in a regulation game since Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton had 41 on Dec. 17, 2011. Valpo made nine 3s, shooting at a 42.9 percent clip. This marked the team’s fourth time in the last five games shooting above 40 percent from 3. This represented the 103rd all-time matchup between these two teams, moving Evansville into a tie with Butler as Valpo’s all-time most common opponent. Pettigrew’s 17 points helped him continue to climb Valpo’s freshman scoring list, as he now ranks sixth in program history for points by a freshman with 375, surpassing Javon Freeman-Liberty’s 2018-19 campaign (364). Valpo continued to play close games as 11 of the team’s final 12 regular-season contests were decided by single figures. In league play, 18 of Valpo’s 20 games were decided by 10 points or fewer. Valpo dropped to 1-2 in one-point games with a win over Indiana State and losses to Belmont and Evansville. Valpo led for 24 minutes, 57 seconds, while Evansville led for 11 minutes, 41 seconds. The Aces led by as many as eight with 9:09 to go and the Beacons led by as many as nine with 40 seconds left in the first half. Up Next Valpo (17-14, 11-9 MVC) will compete in Arch Madness, the State Farm MVC Tournament in St. Louis, this coming week beginning on Thursday. The bracket and schedule information will be announced after Sunday’s MVC docket. ====================================================================== SMALL INDIANA COLLEGE SPORTS WEB SITES UINDY ATHLETICS: https://athletics.uindy.edu/ MARIAN ATHLETICS: https://muknights.com/ INDIANA WESLEYAN ATHLETICS: https://iwuwildcats.com/ EARLHAM ATHLETICS: https://goearlham.com/ WABASH ATHLETICS: https://sports.wabash.edu/ FRANKLIN ATHLETICS: https://franklingrizzlies.com/ ROSE-HULMAN ATHLETICS: https://athletics.rose-hulman.edu/ ANDERSON ATHLETICS: https://athletics.anderson.edu/landing/index TRINE ATHLETICS: https://trinethunder.com/landing/index BETHEL ATHLETICS: https://bupilots.com/ DEPAUW ATHLETICS: https://depauwtigers.com/ HANOVER ATHLETICS: https://athletics.hanover.edu/ MANCHESTER ATHLETICS: https://muspartans.com/ HUNTINGTON ATHLETICS: https://www.huathletics.com/ OAKLAND CITY ATHLETICS: https://gomightyoaks.com/index.aspx ST. The decision marks the first time that games will be canceled or postponed due to a work stoppage since the 1994-95 players’ strike, which accounted for the loss of over 900 games, including the 1994 World Series. ========================================================================= TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY On March 1 in … 1904 – England regains cricket Ashes taking a 3-1 series lead versus Australia. 1921 – Australia Cricket team completes 5-0 drubbing of England. 1934 – Primo Carnera beats Tommy Loughran in 15 for heavyweight boxing title. 1941 – Elmer Layden becomes first NFL commisioner. 1942 – Major League Baseball decides that players in military can’t play when on furlough. 1949 – Joe Louis retires as heavyweight boxing champion. 1949 – The Saint Louis Browns, owners of Sportsman’s Park, move to evict the Saint Louis Cardinals. 1953 – Babe Didrikson-Zaharias wins LPGA Sarasota Golf Open. 1954 – Ted Williams fractures collarbone in first game of spring training after flying 39 combat missions without injury in Korean War. 1955 – Pakistan versus India five Test Cricket series ends in a 0-0 draw. 1958 – Gary Sobers 365 versus Pakistan, 614 minutes, 38 fours, best Cricket before Lara. 1958 – Sobers completes 446 stand for second wicket with Conrad Hunte, 260. 1958 – West Indies cricket declare at stumps score of 3-790 declare versus Pakistan. 1959 – Beverly Hanson wins LPGA Golden Triangle Festival Golf Tournament. 1965 – Australia suspends champion swimmer Dawn Fraser for 10 years for misconduct. 1969 – New York Yankees’ Mickey Mantle announces his retirement from baseball. 1970 – Atje Keulen-Deelstra becomes world champion all-round ladies skater. 1972 – Wilt Chamberlain is first NBA player to score 30,000 points. 1973 – Robyn Smith becomes first female jockey to win a major race. 1974 – Ian and Greg Chappell make 264 partnership versus New Zealand cricket at Wellington. 1980 – Hilbert van der Duim becomes world champion all-round skater. 1981 – Sally Little wins LPGA Olympia Gold Golf Classic. 1983 – Tamara McKinney becomes first US woman skier to win the World Cup. 1985 – Milwaukee businessman Herb Kohl purchases the Milwaukee Bucks. 1987 – Jane Geddes wins LPGA Women’s Kemper Golf Open. 1988 – Wayne Gretzky passes Gordie Howe with his record 1,050th NHL assist. 1989 – Ben Johnson’s coach testifies Johnson began using steroids in 1981. 1992 – Jenny Thompson swims 100 metre freestyle world record (1:01.40). 1992 – Nelson Diebel swims 100 metre freestyle US record (54.48 seconds). 1993 – George Steinbenner is reinstated as owner of New York Yankees. 1993 – New expansion NHL team, owned by Disney, is named the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. 1994 – Former banker Leonard Coleman is elected National League president replacing Bill White. 1996 – Lenny Wilkens, winningest coach in NBA, coaches his 1,000th victory. 2005 – Tim Hudson agrees to a four-year, $47-million contract extension with the Atlanta Braves. 2009 – In Victoria, British Columbia, Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg wins her third Canadian women’s curling Tournament of Hearts title with an 8-5 victory over Marla Mallett of B.C. 2010 – At the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, the Canadian men’s hockey team defeats the USA team 3-2 in overtime winning its 13th gold medal, a new record for any country at any Olympic Winter Games. 2022 – At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Anaheim Ducks beats Boston Bruins by score 4-3. 2022 – At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-1. 2022 – At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats New York Islanders by score 5-3. 2022 – At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Montreal Canadiens by score 8-4. 2022 – At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Minnesota Wild by score 5-1. 2022 – At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Carolina Hurricanes by score 4-3. 2022 – At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats New Jersey Devils by score 4-3. 2022 – At Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Philadelphia Flyers by score 3-0. 2022 – At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Ottawa Senators by score 5-2. 2022 – Major League Baseball cancels the first two series of its 2022 season, due to failure to agree on a new collective bargaining agreement.
