MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 5 FLORIDA BLITZES MISSISSIPPI STATE, SEALS SEC TITLE

Alex Condon netted a season-high 26 points and added seven rebounds as fifth-ranked Florida claimed the Southeastern Conference’s regular-season title outright for the first time since 2014 with a 108-74 pasting of Mississippi State on Tuesday in Gainesville, Fla.

In their home finale, the Gators (24-6, 15-2 SEC) played without leading scorer Thomas Haugh but led by 12 at halftime and never let up in their 10th straight win.

Florida’s Xaivian Lee registered 19 points, six assists, five boards and four steals before fouling out. Rueben Chinyelu had 11 points and 16 rebounds for his 18th double-double of the season, tying the school record.

The Bulldogs (13-17, 5-12) got 21 points and five assists from Josh Hubbard but lost for the seventh time in nine games.

UCLA 72, No. 9 Nebraska 52

Trent Perry scored 20 points as the Bruins earned their third home win over a Top 10 team, beating the Cornhuskers in Los Angeles.

UCLA (20-10, 12-7 Big Ten) finished with a 16-1 record at Pauley Pavilion, its only loss in double overtime to Indiana. The Bruins also beat then-No. 4 Purdue and then-No. 10 Illinois at home. UCLA’s Eric Dailey Jr. logged 14 points and eight rebounds.

Nebraska (25-5, 14-5) missed out on a chance to lock up a triple bye given to the top four teams in next week’s Big Ten conference tournament. Sam Hoiberg led the Cornhuskers with 12 points.

TCU 73, No. 10 Texas Tech 65

Xavier Edmonds posted his 10th double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Horned Frogs past the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas.

Micah Robinson contributed 15 points and Jayden Pierre tallied 14 points for TCU (20-10, 10-7 Big 12), which won its fourth straight game. TCU had a 39-25 rebounding edge, including a 16-7 margin on offensive rebounds, and also won the battle for second-chance points 22-8.

Donovan Atwell paced Texas Tech (22-8, 12-5) with 19 points. Jaylen Petty added 17 points for the Red Raiders, whose three-game winning streak ended.

No. 11 Illinois 80, Oregon 54

Andrej Stojakovic notched 21 points and 12 rebounds and David Mirkovic added 19 points and seven boards to help the Illini rout the Ducks in Champaign, Ill.

Illinois (23-7, 14-5 Big Ten) dominated behind multiple extended runs to stop a two-game losing streak while sending Oregon to its third loss in five games. The Ducks (11-19, 4-15) have dropped seven of their past eight road contests.

Oregon, which entered the game shooting 32.6% from long range this season, went 5-for-29 (17.2%) as part of a 32.8% overall effort from the floor. Illinois shot 40.8% while holding a 36-26 edge in points in the paint.

No. 13 Virginia 75, Wake Forest 70

Thijs De Ridder scored 16 points and the Cavaliers held on for a victory over the Demon Deacons in Charlottesville, Va. Jacari White added 14 points and Johann Grunloh had 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Virginia.

The Cavaliers (26-4, 14-3 ACC) never trailed and clinched the No. 2 seed and a double bye at next week’s ACC tournament in Charlotte. They are 15-1 at home heading into their regular-season finale against visiting Virginia Tech on Saturday.

The Demon Deacons (15-15, 6-11) have lost three of their last four games and are 0-7 against ranked opponents. Mekhi Mason scored a season-high 26 points, and Juke Harris put up 21.

Arizona State 70, No. 14 Kansas 60

Maurice Odum made five 3-pointers and recorded 23 points and six assists to lead the Sun Devils to a victory over the Jayhawks in Tempe, Ariz.

Massamba Diop added 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Arizona State (16-14, 7-10 Big 12), which never trailed while improving to 5-0 at home all-time against Kansas. The Sun Devils led by as many as 20 points while winning for the fourth time in the past six games.

Tre White had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (21-9, 11-6), who lost for the fourth time in the past six games. Darryn Peterson added 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals but made just 3 of 18 field-goal attempts.

Georgia 98, No. 16 Alabama 88

Kanon Catchings made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points to help the Bulldogs prevail in Athens, Ga., snapping the Crimson Tide’s eight-game winning streak.

Catchings was 12-for-20 from the floor and 7-for-13 from long distance, two of them in the final five minutes, while grabbing six rebounds. The Bulldogs (21-9, 9-8 SEC) also got 16 points from Blue Cain, leaving him one point shy of reaching the 1,000-point career mark.

Alabama (22-8, 12-5) was led by Labaron Philon Jr.’s 26 points, including four 3-pointers. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. added 19 points, with five 3-pointers and five rebounds.

No. 17 North Carolina 67, Clemson 63

Luka Bogavac drained three 3-pointers in the final seven minutes and finished with a career-high 20 points to propel the Tar Heels to a victory over the Tigers in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Henri Veesaar contributed 13 points as North Carolina (24-6, 12-5 ACC) finished 18-0 at Dean E. Smith Center, a single-season program record for wins at home. The win got North Carolina a step closer to gaining a double bye in the ACC tournament.

RJ Godfrey scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Clemson (21-9, 11-6), which lost for the fifth time in the past six games.

No. 18 St. John’s 72, Georgetown 69

Zuby Ejiofor scored 23 points as the Red Storm survived several shaky moments in their final home game of the season, earning a victory over the Hoyas in New York.

Ejiofor also contributed seven rebounds and five assists as St. John’s (24-6, 17-2 Big East) overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half. Joson Sanon scored all 15 of his points in the second half as the Red Storm beat the Hoyas for the 11th straight time.

Kayvaun Mulready scored 20 points for the Hoyas (13-17, 5-14), who took their seventh straight loss. Jeremiah Williams added 17 but missed a critical free throw that would have tied the game in the final seconds.

No. 19 Miami (Ohio) 74, Toledo 72

Peter Suder scored 19 points and Brant Byers added 13 as the RedHawks overcame sloppiness throughout to outlast the Rockets in Oxford, Ohio, and remain the nation’s only unbeaten team.

Antwone Woolfolk added 14 for Miami (30-0, 17-0 Mid-American Conference), which committed 15 turnovers while recording just 12 assists on the night.

BRAVES’ JURICKSON PROFAR FACES 162-GAME SUSPENSION FOR SECOND POSITIVE DRUG TEST, AP SOURCE SAYS

NEW YORK (AP) — Atlanta outfielder Jurickson Profar faces a 162-game suspension by Major League Baseball for a possible second failed test for a performance-enhancing drug, a person familiar with the issue told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the process, first reported by ESPN, was ongoing.

Profar intends to ask the players’ association to file a grievance to appeal any discipline to baseball’s independent arbitrator, Martin F, Scheinman, a second person familiar with the process said, also on condition of anonymity, because no announcement had been made.

Because this would be Profar’s second infraction, an appeal would take place after a suspension was announced.

An All-Star in 2024, Profar was suspended for 80 games last March 31 following a positive test for Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone that helps production of testosterone. He issued a statement then saying: “I would never willingly take a banned substance, but I take full responsibility and accept MLB’s decision.”

JETS PLACE FRANCHISE TAG ON RUNNING BACK BREECE HALL BEFORE THE DEADLINE

The New York Jets placed the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall, while several other teams decide whether to use the tag on potential free agents before Tuesday’s deadline.

The non-exclusive franchise tag guarantees Hall a one-year contract worth about $14.3 million if he doesn’t sign a long-term deal. Hall is the third player to get the tag this offseason with Dallas receiver George Pickens and Atlanta tight end Kyle Pitts getting them well before the deadline.

Players getting the tag can still be signed to an offer sheet once free agency officially starts March 11, but their current teams would have five days to match the offer or receive two first-round picks as compensation.

Among the other possible tag candidates are Indianapolis’ Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce, Cincinnati edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, Seattle’s Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III and Chargers edge rusher Odafe Oweh.

INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES

COLTS FOOTBALL

COLTS PLACE TRANSITION TAG ON QB DANIEL JONES

The Colts on Tuesday placed the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones.

In using the transition tag on Jones, the Colts will have the right to match any offer the 28-year-old quarterback may receive as an unrestricted free agent. The Colts and Jones can still agree to a new contract at any point between now and the opening of the NFL free agency negotiation window at noon on Monday, March 9.

If the Colts and Jones do not reach a new contract between now and the opening of that window, Jones will be able to negotiate offer sheets with the 31 other NFL teams. However, if Jones were to agree to an offer sheet, the Colts would have five days to choose to match it and keep him in Indianapolis.

There are two key differences between the transition tag and the franchise tag. First: If a team declines to match an offer sheet for a player on the franchise tag, they receive two first-round picks in return; on the transition tag, a team does not receive draft compensation for declining to match. Second: The one-year guaranteed salary of the franchise tag is determined by the average of the top five salaries at a player’s position over the last five years; for the transition tag, it’s the average of the top 10 salaries at a player’s position over the last five years.

This is the seventh time since 2013 that a team has used the transition tag on a player, and it’s the first time the Colts have used the transition tag since 1998.

Jones signed with the Colts as an unrestricted free agent last March and, over 13 starts, completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,101 yards with 19 touchdowns, eight interceptions, a passer rating of 100.2 and five rushing touchdowns.

INDIANA PACERS

GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT CLIPPERS

The Pacers (15-46) open a four-game West Coast road trip on Wednesday night in Los Angeles against the Clippers (29-31). It is the first meeting this season between the Pacers and Clippers, who made a major trade last month at the trade deadline.

Indiana acquired center Ivica Zubac and forward Kobe Brown from the Clippers on Feb. 5 in exchange for guard Bennedict Mathurin, center Isaiah Jackson, a conditional 2026 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 first-round pick.

Zubac was the centerpiece of the deal. The 7-footer from Croatia has averaged a double-double each of the past two years and gives Indiana a much-needed rebounding and paint presence that can be a longterm fit in the starting lineup alongside All-Stars Pascal Siakam and Tyrese Haliburton.

Zubac has yet to make his Pacers debut as he recovers from a left ankle sprain, but Brown has received plenty of opportunity in Indiana. After averaging just 2.3 points over 118 games with the Clippers, the 26-year-old has averaged 9.4 points and 6.3 rebounds over his first eight games with the Blue & Gold. Brown is shooting an impressive 39.1 percent from 3-point range so far for the Pacers.

To acquire Zubac and Brown, the Pacers had to trade away two former first round picks in Mathurin and Jackson. Mathurin has been very good in his first few weeks with the Clippers, averaging 18.8 points and 6.1 rebounds, including a 38-point performance to lead the Clippers to a win over Denver on Feb. 19. Jackson has played sparingly, seeing the floor for just three games so far.

While the Pacers are out of playoff contention, the Clippers are surprisingly in the postseason hunt despite a disastrous 7-21 start to the season. They have gone 22-10 since to surge up to ninth place in the Western Conference standings, which would put them in the Play-In Tournament if the season ended today.

The biggest reason for the Clippers’ success has been Kawhi Leonard, who is putting together arguably the best regular season of his career. The two-time NBA Finals MVP ranks eighth in the league in scoring at 27.8 points per game while also tallying 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-leading 2 steals per contest.

Projected Starters

Pacers: G – Kam Jones, G – Ben Sheppard, F – Jarace Walker, F – Obi Toppin, C – Jay Huff

Clippers: G – Kris Dunn, G – Kobe Sanders, F – Kawhi Leonard, F – Derrick Jones Jr., C – Brook Lopez

Injury Report

Pacers: Obi Toppin – probable (right foot stress fracutre), Andrew Nembhard – questionable (sore lower back and neck), Aaron Nesmith – questionable (right ankle sprain), Pascal Siakam – questionable (left wrist sprain), Johnny Furphy – out (right ACL tear), Tyrese Haliburton – out (right Achilles tendon tear), Ivica Zubac – out (left ankle sprain)

Clippers: Bradley Beal – out (left hip fracture), John Collins – out (neck strain)

Last Meeting

Feb. 23, 2025: Tyrese Haliburton scored 17 points in the third quarter to help the Pacers pull away from the Clippers for a 129-111 victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Haliburton finished with 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting (4-of-8 from 3-point range) and 12 assists to lead Indiana to victory.

Seven Pacers finished in double figures in the victory. Aaron Nesmith scored 19 points, Myles Turner added 17, and Pascal Siakam recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

James Harden led the Clippers with 31 points, seven rebounds, and 11 assists. Ivica Zubac added 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting and six rebounds.

Noteworthy

The Pacers have won their last three games against the Clippers, including both road games at Intuit Dome since the Clippers’ new home opened in the fall of 2024.

Pacers guard T.J. McConnell needs three steals to reach 900 for his career.

Mathurin and Jackson will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the first time since the trade when the Pacers host the Clippers on March 27.

It would top last season’s record-breaking performance of 79.0 in 2024-25. Ciezki earned first team honors from the league’s media while the league’s coaches selected her as a unanimous second team pick. This is the second All-Big Ten honor for Ciezki, who earned honorable mention honors in 2023-24. In her senior season, Ciezki has been one of the Big Ten’s leading scorers, averaging 23.2 points per game along with 3.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game. The Buffalo, N.Y. native was a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week who scored in double figures in 28 games this season which included seven 30-point games. Ciezki has recorded two double-doubles and has made 78 3-pointers, which ranks tied for third in a single season. Recently, she joined IU’s 1,000-point club and ranks 31st all-time in scoring. Her 674 points this season ranks third-most in a single season and sixth in the country. Ciezki also becomes the 11th first-team All-Big Ten selection under 12th year head coach Teri Moren.

Makalusky makes her way on to the eight-player All-Freshman team after putting together a noteworthy campaign in her collegiate debut. The Fishers, Ind. native averaged 9.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and shot 44.7 percent from the floor and 37.4 percent from the 3-point line. NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL

HOME FINALE VS. STANFORD

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The final week of the regular season is upon us. The Fighting Irish (13-16, 4-12) and Pitt Panthers (11-18, 4-12) are tied for the 15th and final spot in the ACC Tournament; however, since Pitt defeated Notre Dame on Feb. 21, that means they hold the tiebreaker and would advance if the tourney started today. So what lies ahead for both:

Notre Dame

vs. Stanford on Wednesday at 9 pm

at Boston College on Saturday at Noon

Pittsburgh

vs. Florida State on Wednesday at 9 pm

at Syracuse on Saturday at 4:30 pm

Pitt ultimately controls their own destiny. Notre Dame ideally needs to win both to give itself the best chance. Interestingly enough, the next two opponents are ones Notre Dame has already defeated once this season.

CAN IRISH KEEP STREAK ALIVE?

The Irish are 5-0 all-time against the Cardinal and will hope to keep that streak alive after Wednesday night. The first ever game was back on Dec. 26, 1934. Next, fast forward to two victories in 1992 and 1993. Then last season, Stanford made its first visit to Purcell as an ACC school, and Notre Dame won it 56-54.

In that game, Stanford led 54-53 with 27.8 seconds remaining. Enter Cole Certa, who hit the corner three for the victory.

Lastly, these two programs met on December 30 in Palo Alto, where the Irish earned a 47-40 win. Stanford’s 40 points were the fewest the Cardinal had scored at home since a 42-34 loss to UCLA on Jan. 22, 1982, and the fewest ND had allowed in a road game since holding Northwestern to 36 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Dec. 17, 1983.

Also in that last matchup, Ebuka Okorie was held to a season low 7 points on 3-14 shooting.

Each of the last 4 contests have been decided by seven points or less.

BOUNCE BACK

Last Tuesday, Notre Dame suffered one of the program’s worst losses on its home court, losing by 44 points to #1 Duke. Instead of hanging their collective heads, the Irish bounced back in major fashion, defeating NCAA Tournament-bound NC State, 96-90, in overtime.

Notre Dame also defied an all-too-familiar script. Facing a nine-point deficit with 4:49 remaining, ND fired off an 11-2 run to tie the game at 81-all to force OT.

Cole Certa, Jalen Haralson and Braeden Shrewsberry led the 2nd half offensive surge. In fact, the trio were the only three to score for Notre Dame in the 2nd half, combining for 43 points on 14-26 shooting (53.8%). Then Cole Certa got hot in OT where he was 3-3 from beyond the arc, 3-4 from the stripe, totaling 12 points.

Certa finished with a game-high 32 points on 9-17 shooting, 6-10 from three, 8-9 from the free-throw line. The sophomore now has three 30+ point games in ACC play, which trails only Stanford’s Ebuka Okorie (4).

Haralson poured in 20 in the second half to finish with 25 points, one shy of his career high. The freshman tied his career high mark from the free-throw line, where he was 9-10. Haralson was 8-for-15 from the field. The Anderson, Indiana, native was one board shy of a double-double.

Shrewsberry had 12 of his 16 in the second half and finished 3-6 from deep, 5-10 overall. Sir Mohammed rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

CERTA-FIED

Cole Certa has been one of the best basketball players in the ACC down the final stretch and we’ll let the stats speak for themselves.

Cole had the 4th highest scoring average amongst ACC players in February:

Ebuka Okorie – 25.6

Juke Harris – 22.9

Mikel Brown Jr – 21.1

Cole Certa – 21.0

Cameron Boozer – 20.0

Certa also converted 4.3 threes/game in February, which ranks 2nd amongst Power Conference players. That number trails only Texas Tech’s Donovan Atwell’s 4.6. Cole’s 30 total threes were the most of any ACC player.

In addition, the Illinois native has produced three 30+ point games since Jan. 27. His three 30-burgers in ACC play trail only Ebuka Okorie’s 4. In fact, Cole owns the 3rd and 5th highest scoring performances in league play with his 37 and 34 points.

Lastly, Cole is riding a career best 7 game double-digit scoring streak into Wednesday. He’s totaled a whopping 147 points (21.0 ppg), shooting 42.0% from the field, 30-74 from three (40.5%), in that span.

30-BURGERS

Now let’s take a closer look at those 30+ point performances.

On Feb. 14 vs. Georgia Tech, Cole went off for a career high 37 points in the 89-74 win over Georgia Tech. The 37 points tied Matt Farrell for the second most in an ACC game (most in regulation), trailing only Markus Burton’s 43 points in 2OT game against Cal a season ago. Cole drained a career-best seven threes, finishing 7-11. He was 12-20 from the field overall. Certa dropped 21 points in the first half, marking the first time an Irish player has done so since Markus Burton’s 22 at Syracuse on Jan. 18, 2025.

Certa also went off for 34 points against No. 17 Virginia, shooting 10-19 from the floor, 5-13 from three and 9-11 from the free-throw line. Certa’s 34 points were the most by a Notre Dame player against an AP-ranked team since Nov. 26, 2008, when Kyle McAlarney scored 39 in a loss to No. 1 UNC.

And most recently, Cole lifted the Irish to a 96-90 overtime victory over NC State, recording 32 points. He went 3-3 from beyond the arc in OT and ultimately drained 6-10 from three in the game.

JALEN SURGING

The previous sections talked about Cole Certa’s offensive surge, but now let’s discuss  Notre Dame freshman standout Jalen Haralson.

After missing three games due to an ankle injury, Haralson’s return resulted in one of the program’s best wins in the Coach Shrewsberry era – a 96-90 OT win over NC State. In the 2nd half alone, Haralson scored 20 points on 7-9 shooting, 6-6 from the stripe. He recorded 14 of the team’s final 20 points. He ultimately finished the game with 25 points, one shy of his career best.

Take out those 3 games Jalen missed and the Indiana native has posted four 20-point games over his last 6 games played – 20 vs Virginia, career high 26 at Syracuse, 23 at SMU, then 25 vs. NC State.

Furthermore, Jalen has averaged 19.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in his last 6 games played.

SHREWSBERRY LEADING FROM THREE

Braeden Shrewsberry continues to prove he’s one of the best from deep, ranking 4th in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage at 40.3%. That number also ranks 38th in the country. He’s converting 2.8 made threes per game, which ranks 3rd in the league.

Shrewsberry’s sweet spot? The corner three – where he’s draining 48.0%, which is 12.2% above the Division I average.

His best performance from beyond the arc came against Evansville when Shrewsberry scored a career-high 26 points behind a career-high 8 three pointers, shooting 80% from three (8-10). His 8 made triples tied for the 7th most in a game all-time in program history.

Braeden has drained a career-best 81 made threes on the year. For comparison, he recorded 78 as a freshman and 72 in a shortened sophomore campaign.

BRAEDEN CAREER ACCOLADES

Speaking of Shrewsberry making it rain, the junior enters Wednesday’s matchup with 231 career made threes. He is now 6 away (237) from moving into the program’s top-10.

A milestone already achieved – Braeden reached 1,000 career points at SMU on Feb. 10, doing so in 84 games. He became the 69th Notre Dame player all-time to reach the milestone. That number ties Louisville for 3rd most all-time behind Duke (70) & UNC (81).

REBOUNDING TRANSLATES

Towt’s current rebounding rankings:

9.3 rpg ranks 26th nationally, 4th in the ACC

3.7 offensive rpg – 1st in ACC/16th in country

5.7 defensive rpg – 5th in ACC

1,348 career rebounds – leads all active players

His 1,348 career rebounds have pushed him into the top-100 all-time list at #54. 20 more rebounds would put him in the top-50, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

NOTRE NOTABLES

The Irish are 9 wins away from 2,000 all-time. They would become the eighth program to achieve this feat.

Certa is averaging a team-best 16.6 ppg against ranked opposition.

Brady Koehler has been excellent in the midrange, where he’s shooting  57.9%.

Logan Imes recently produced back-to-back games in double figures for the first time in his career, filling in for the injured Jalen Haralson. He produced 12 points at Pitt, and the game prior vs. Georgia Tech, Logan delivered a career high 14 points on 6-12 shooting (2-4 from three).

Cole is 83-92 from the free-throw line. His 90.2% leads all ACC players and would rank 2nd for a season at ND. Steve Vasturia holds the top spot at 91.0%.

Garrett Sundra is 9 for his last 10 from two-point range.

Sir Mohammed thrives in the paint, where he’s shooting 50.0%.

NET is at 91 — 3-10 in Quad 1 // 1-4 in Quad 2// 1-1 in Quad 3 / 8-1 in Quad 4.

KenPom is at 84 — ORtg ranked 82 at 115.8 — DRtg ranked 104 at 106.0.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo’s extensive list of honors and awards keeps growing. On Tuesday, the junior was named ACC Player of the Year for the second straight season and ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season.

Hidalgo earned both awards from both the league’s head coaches voting and by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Cassandre Prosper also picked up league honors, becoming the first Notre Dame player to be selected the ACC Most Improved Player by both the coaches and Blue Ribbon Panel.

Hidalgo is the first Notre Dame player to earn the ACC’s top honor multiple times and is the fourth to receive the honor joining Jewell Loyd, Kayla McBride [Coaches’ Poll] and Brianna Turner.

Hidalgo becomes the first player in ACC history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons. The guard is the 11th player in league history to earn multiple ACC Player of the Year honors in her career and just the second to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Year three times.

Hidalgo set the all-time record for steals in a game and the program’s single-game scoring record against Akron, finishing with 44 points and 16 rebounds. She has the career program scoring records for 30-point games (18), 20-point games (73) and consecutive games in double figures (96).

In the final game of the regular season, Hidalgo recorded 30 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a road win over No. 10 Louisville, becoming the first ACC player to have 30 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals in a game since 2001.

CASSANDRE PROSPER

IRISH TAKE DOWN EAGLES IN HOME OPENER

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame baseball team posted an 11-1 win over Eastern Michigan in eight innings in the team’s home opener on Tuesday evening at Frank Eck Stadium.

The Eagles plated a run in the top of the third, but the Irish quickly responded in their at-bats in the bottom half of the inning. BALL STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL

CARDINALS CLAIM 74-71 OVERTIME THRILLER AT WESTERN MICHIGAN

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Ball State men’s basketball team got a game-tying layup from Armoni Zeigler in the closing seconds of regulation and claimed a 74-71 overtime thriller on Tuesday night over Western Michigan at University Arena.

Trailing 60-56 after Western Michigan hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds to play in the second half, Zeigler made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 11 seconds on the clock to get the Cardinals within one. After the Broncos were fouled and made one out of two free throws, Zeigler drove to the right side of the hoop and finished to knot the score at 61-61 with 2.8 seconds left. Western’s 3-point attempt from the right wing hit the back iron to lead to the extra session.

Ball State (11-19, 6-11 Mid-American Conference) scored the first four points of overtime on a Zeigler layup and dunk by Preston Copeland to go up 65-61 and would lead for the remainder of the game. Devon Barnes and Zeigler both went to the line in the final 15 seconds with the Cardinals clinging to one-point leads and made both free throws to help the visitors secure the road win.

Zeigler tallied game highs in points (28) and assists (eight) while grabbing seven rebounds. Davion Hill (17 points, three assists, three steals) and Copeland (12 points, six rebounds) followed in double figures scoring for Ball State. Juwan Maxey chipped in eight points and four rebounds, and Mason Jones contributed 10 boards and three steals.

The visitors clamped down on defense early, allowing Western Michigan (10-20, 4-13 MAC) only seven points in the first 12 minutes of the game, before going into halftime with a 25-22 lead. The Broncos started the second period strong and came back to lead by as many as seven points at 45-38 with 10:35 on the clock, but Ball State responded with an 8-0 rally capped by a triple from Maxey to regain a 46-45 edge. The scoring run expanded to 14-2 after Copeland dunked at the 5:48 mark for a 52-47 Ball State lead.

Justice Williams (22 points, six rebounds) and Jayden Brewer (20 points, 13 rebounds) led Western Michigan in scoring and rebounding on the night.

Both teams totaled 35 rebounds, but Ball State held advantages in points in the paint (46-26) and second chance points (11-6). The Cardinals committed three fewer turnovers (11-8) than the Broncos.

Ball State shot 46.8 percent (29-62) from the field including 38.5 percent (5-13) from distance and 57.9 percent (11-19) on free throws. Western went 41.1 percent (23-56) on field goals, 31.8 percent (6-19) on 3-pointers and 79.2 percent (19-24) at the foul line.

INDIANA STATE SOFTBALL

INDIANA STATE OPENS MVC ACTION AT PRICE FIELD

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State returns to Price Field this weekend for its 2026 home opener as the Sycamores host Bradley for a three-game series on March 6-7. ISU and the Braves will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday before concluding the weekend with a single game on Saturday.

The series marks Indiana State’s first home contests of the season and the beginning of Missouri Valley Conference play, as the Sycamores look to carry momentum from a strong showing at the Lindenwood Tournament.

Indiana State posted a 3-1 record in St. Charles, highlighted by a 3-1 win over Green Bay and a 10-0 run-rule victory against Western Illinois. The Sycamores showcased timely hitting and aggressive base running throughout the weekend. In the win over Green Bay, ISU struck early with three runs in the first inning and relied on steady pitching to close out the victory. Against Western Illinois, Indiana State erupted for nine runs across the second and third innings, using extra-base hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues to secure the five-inning win.

Offensively, the Sycamores received production throughout the lineup. Madison Poulson continued to set the tone at the top of the order, consistently reaching base and creating scoring opportunities. Mallory Chavez provided power in the middle of the lineup with multiple extra-base hits, while Morgan Goodrich’s speed and ability to generate offense on the bases applied constant pressure to opposing defenses.

In the circle, Caylee Gaytan has anchored the pitching staff early in the season. The freshman right-hander enters the weekend with a 1.56 ERA and has demonstrated the ability to manage high-leverage innings while keeping opponents off balance. Indiana State has also benefited from key relief appearances that have helped secure late-inning leads.

Bradley enters the weekend ready to open conference play, setting up what is expected to be a competitive Valley matchup to begin the home slate. With familiar opponents and the energy of playing at Price Field for the first time this season, the Sycamores will look to continue building consistency on both sides of the ball.

First pitch for Friday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. ET, with Saturday’s finale scheduled for 12 p.m. ET at Price Field.

Lauren Lee finished second in the HL with 4.2 assists per league game. She also had a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio in league play, a league-best. Her 2.1 assist-to-turnover for the entire season is second in the league and 31st in the country.

The Latest of Lili

Over the last nine games, Lili Krasovec averaged 12.7 points per game.

3-Point Threat

Rylee Bess has the second-best season-long 3-point percentage by a freshman in program history. Her mark of 39.5 percent (60-of-152) is only bested by Jordan Zuppe (2007-08), who shot 43.3 percent (74-of-171) in her freshman season.

At Her Bess(t)

Rylee Bess’ 39.5 3-point percentage is the best by any freshman in the country this season and 55th nationally among all players.

Chasing 2,000

Jordan Reid needs 30 points to reach 2,000 in her career between Purdue Fort Wayne and Indiana Wesleyan.

The Magic Numbers

Under head coach Maria Marchesano, the Mastodons are 62-10 when they score 70 points or more, 30-3 when they hit 80, and 13-0 when they reach 90.

Inside The Arc? Guaranteed Bucket

More Maria Madness

50-50 Chance

The Mastodons shot over 50 percent in five games this season. This ties for the fourth-most games in a season shooting 50 percent or more in the program’s Division I history. The ‘Dons shot over 50 percent in 11 games in 2010-11, 10 games in 2013-14, eight games in 2024-25 and five games in 2023-24.

Bench Mob

Purdue Fort Wayne’s bench is out-scoring its opponents’ benches 591-510 this season. The Mastodon bench led in bench points in 19 of its 30 games.

Last Time Out

Purdue Fort Wayne bested Green Bay on Senior Day thanks to the four upperclassmen in the starting lineup scoring in double-figures.

Next Time Up

Depending on other results around the league, the Mastodons could play in the second round on Sunday (March 8) advance straight to the semifinal or Monday (March 9).

Foster moved into scoring position after doubling and advancing to third on a groundout.

USI graduate centerfielder Khi Holiday extended the Screaming Eagles’ lead to 7-5 by manufacturing a run in the fifth. Holiday singled, advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Head Coach Roger Powell Jr.: Roger Powell Jr. (39-58) is in his third season as the head coach of the Valpo men’s basketball program. After helping guide Gonzaga to a 121-13 record during his four seasons as an assistant coach, Powell returned to Valpo, where he was part of head coach Bryce Drew’s staff from 2011-2016 and led the team to 124 wins in five seasons, including a program-record 30 victories and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title game appearance in 2015-16. He was part of head coach Mark Few’s Gonzaga staff as the Bulldogs reached the 2021 national championship game after winning their first 31 games of the season. During Powell’s first season on staff in 2019-20, Gonzaga was 31-2 at the time the NCAA college basketball season was halted due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of his final three seasons on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances and the aforementioned trip to the 2021 national title game. Prior to his arrival at Gonzaga, Powell served as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt University under Bryce Drew from 2016-2019. During his stint as an assistant at Valpo, he was part of four Horizon League regular-season championships in a five-year period while also leading the 2012-13 and 2014-15 squads to Horizon League tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A product of Joliet West High School and a native of Joliet, Ill., Powell capped a prolific collegiate playing career at Illinois with a national title game appearance in 2005 before going on to a successful professional playing career. In the second season of the Powell Era in 2024-2025, Valpo over doubled its overall win total from the previous season and doubled its conference win output before earning a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinal berth. The Beacons finished with 15 wins, the team’s highest total since 2019-20.

Series Notes: Indiana State leads 60-40 as these two teams prepare to lock horns for the 101st time in a series that dates all the way back to 1937. Indiana State is one of three opponents that Valpo has played at least 100 times, joining Evansville (103) and Butler (103). Valpo is 8-10 against Indiana State since joining the MVC including a pair of close wins this season. Valpo’s last four victories over the Sycamores have all either been by a single point or required overtime. This will be the second Arch Madness matchup between these two foes and first since Valpo’s 77-55 victory on March 7, 2019.

MCNAIR NAMED TO MVC ALL-BENCH TEAM, MOST-IMPROVED TEAM

Valparaiso University men’s basketball sophomore Justus McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West) received dual recognition on Tuesday morning, as he was named to the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench and Most-Improved Teams.

McNair, who was the only player in the league named to both units, nearly doubled his scoring average from his freshman year to his sophomore year. After averaging 4.5 points per game in 34 contests in 2024-25, he boosted that to 8.0 points per game in 30 outings in 2025-26. McNair improved his 3-point percentage from 30.9 percent to 36.1 percent, and also increased his free-throw percentage, rebounding average and assist average.

McNair’s statistical jump in league play was even more pronounced, as he averaged 8.9 points per game over 20 MVC contests this year after finishing at 4.2 points per game in league play in 2024-25. His 3-point shooting (30.6 percent to 38.6 percent) and field goal percentage (37 percent to 45.7 percent) also saw big increases from Year 1 to Year 2 at Valpo.

McNair, who came off the bench in 17 of Valpo’s 20 Valley games and 27 of his 30 games overall, scored in double figures a dozen times this season. He boasted a career-high 21 points in a Nov. 19 win over Cleveland State and had 17-point performances in wins over Southern Illinois and Bradley.

McNair becomes the eighth Valpo player to earn a place on the Most-Improved Team since the department joined the Missouri Valley Conference. This marks the team’s second straight year being represented on that group after Cooper Schwieger achieved that honor a year ago. McNair becomes just the fourth Valpo player to be named to the MVC All-Bench Team and first since Sheldon Edwards in 2021-2022.

VALPO BASEBALL

BASEBALL BEACONS RETURN TO ALABAMA FOR THREE AT JACKSONVILLE STATE

Valparaiso (5-5, 0-0 MVC)

at Jacksonville State (10-3, 0-0 CUSA)

Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium (2,020) | Jacksonville, Ala.

Friday, March 6, 6 p.m. CT – RHP Adam Guazzo

Saturday, March 7, 2 p.m. CT – RHP Connor Lockwood

Sunday, March 8, 1 p.m. – RHP Nick Baffa

Next Up in Valpo Baseball: After winning the final two games of last weekend’s series, the Valparaiso University baseball team will head right back to the state of Alabama with hopes of extending its winning streak as the Beacons start a three-game set with Jacksonville State on Friday night. This is the penultimate weekend prior to Missouri Valley Conference play before Valpo will visit SIUE for the final pre-conference weekend.

Last Time Out: The Beacons enjoyed their second straight winning weekend, taking two of three at Alabama State behind great pitching. Valpo starting pitchers allowed just one run over 16 innings in the series. Valpo gave up one total run over the final 22 innings of the series, which featured a Saturday shutout from Connor Lockwood. After dropping the opener 6-1, Valpo battled back to win the next two games 9-0 and 3-1.

Following the Beacons: All three games this weekend will air on ESPN+. For links to live video stats, visit ValpoAthletics.com. For in-game updates, follow @ValpoBaseball on X.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (217-376) is in his 13th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19, 2024 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

Series Notes: Valpo is 2-9 all-time against Jacksonville State, most recently dropping all three games of a series in February 2021, falling 5-4, 10-2 and 13-3. Valpo lost two of three in a 2016-season-opening series, dropped two of three in 2014 and got swept in a doubleheader back in 1979.

Moving in the Right Direction

With a win on Friday, Valpo would have a three-game winning streak, which would mark the program’s longest winning streak since April 2023.

Valpo is already half way to its win total from last season.

Valpo is seeking its third straight winning weekend. Last year, Valpo did not have a winning weekend until the final weekend of the season.

The Beacons are 5-5 through 10 games, their first 10-game start of .500 or better since 2023.

Immaculate

Connor Lockwood completed one of baseball’s rarest feats on Feb. 28 at Alabama State.

The redshirt senior right-hander threw an immaculate second inning, striking out the side on just nine pitches.

Fellow Libertyville, Ill. native Colin Fields threw Valpo’s previous immaculate inning, doing so as part of his no-hitter on March 13, 2021 at Middle Tennessee.

Lockwood reached the 200-strikeout milestone for his collegiate career in the game against Alabama State as well.

Lockwood’s 11 strikeouts were the most by a Beacon since he had a career-high 11 on Feb. 22 at Memphis.

This marked Valpo’s first shutout since Bryce Konitzer on April 28, 2024 in a seven-inning game. It was Valpo’s first nine-inning shutout since Ellis Foreman on April 23, 2017.

This was Valpo’s first complete game since Harry Deliyannis on April 26, 2025 at Belmont.

In addition to yielding only three hits and striking out 11 in his shutout, Lockwood did not issue any walks.

Locking In Recognition

For his Feb. 28 shutout at Alabama State, Connor Lockwood received significant recognition.

The redshirt senior right-hander posted a “game score” of 92 according to D1Baseball.com, the second best in the nation that day. In addition, he was No. 2 on D1Baseball’s Top 100 Pitchers for Week 3.

Lockwood was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, making it the third straight week a Valpo player received a league honor. Cal Schembra (Freshman of the Week, Week 1) and Javin Gauthier (Player of the Week, Week 2) preceded Lockwood’s Week-3 accolade.

This marked the fourth time that Lockwood has been named MVC Pitcher of the Week in his career, the most of any Valpo player since joining the league.

Valpo has captured the award 11 total times since joining The Valley. Lockwood is joined by Colin Fields (twice), Bryce Konitzer, Jacob Rosenkranz, Jake Miller, Bobby Nowak and Easton Rhodehouse.

In the Other Dugout – Jacksonville State

Have swept each of their last three weekend series, taking all three from Toledo, Mississippi Valley State and Memphis.

Coming off a game a 6-5 loss at Alabama on Tuesday.

Won 37 games last season, reaching the Conference USA title game before falling to Western Kentucky 6-5 in 11 innings.

Under the direction of third-year head coach Steve Bieser.

MARIAN SOFTBALL

MARIAN SPLITS PAIR OF TOP-25 GAMES IN FLORIDA

Viera, Fla. – The Marian softball team split their Tuesday games in Florida, earning a top-25 win over No. 18 St. Thomas in their afternoon contest before falling to No. 16 Missouri Baptist in the nightcap. Marian moves to 5-1 on the season following the games.

Game One | Marian 3-0 St. Thomas

The Knights once again turned the ball to Alayna Thomas in the first game of the day, and as she did on Monday, the sophomore again shone brightly, starting the game hitless through three complete. Tesnar would allow one runner in each inning on a walk or error, but relied on the Marian defense to get out of each inning. Marian’s starter would allow a double in the fourth inning, but limited the Bobcats to the lone base runner as a flyout and ground out ended the frame.

Tesnar would keep the shutout going through five innings as two strikeouts helped move the game into the sixth inning, as Marian’s bats finally found life. Until the sixth inning, Marian managed just one base runner, coming on a second inning single from Lily Wendt. Looking to break the 0-0 deadlock, Marian found a spark from the bottom of the order, as Delaney Rundle ripped a lead-off single and Karly Anderson drew a walk. Abbey Hofmann then delivered the first RBI hit of the contest, singling to center field as the lineup rolled over, scoring Rundle to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Abby Madere slammed a single into left field, scoring both Hofmann and Anderson to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.

With a lead at hand, Tesnar only got stronger, quickly working through a 1-2-3 sixth inning, keeping the shutout intact going into the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, St. Thomas would threaten the sophomore as the Bobcats roped back-to-back singles to open the inning, but Tesnar was able to force two infield outs. The sophomore would then back into a corner as she walked the game-tying run, but with the bases-loaded, Marian’s starter forced a flyout to center field, stranding three Bobcats to close out the 3-0 win.

Alayna Tesnar (3-0) logged her second consecutive shutout victory with the win on Tuesday, tossing a complete game for the second time in as many days. The sophomore allowed three hits and walked three batters, logging three strikeouts in the win. Abby Madere ended the game with two RBI, going 1-3 with the insurance base hit in the sixth inning. Abbey Hofmann had the game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning, and Delaney Rundle also collected a hit in the win.

Game Two | Marian 0-8 Missouri Baptist

Marian’s undefeated start to the season would come to an end in their second game on Tuesday, as the Knights were one-hit and shutout against No. 16 Missouri Baptist. The Spartans scored in the top of the first and second innings, before driving home six runs in the seventh inning on Tuesday night.

For the Knights, the offense struggled in their second game of the day, recording just one base hit in the game. Marian’s first base runner in the game came on Ally Malone drawing a third-inning walk, but a double play would end the inning. Mallorie Beutel then singled in the fifth inning after the Knights were retired in order in the fourth. Still, despite loading the bases as Malone and Karly Anderson drew walks, an untimely strikeout ended Marian’s best chance to score a run in the game.

Lexi Smith battled for the Knights from the circle and settled in after allowing the early pair of runs, allowing one base runner over the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Smith would shake off a walk in the sixth inning to hold the game at a two-run contest, and in the seventh was relieved for Katie Lackman to open the frame. Lackman was unsuccessful early in her outing, allowing a double, triple, single, and walk that allowed the Spartans to score two runs, bringing Smith back into the game to record two outs. The freshman inherited two runners, and struggled to get an out, allowing four consecutive hits that saw four more runs cross the plate. Abbey Hofmann would throw a runner out at the plate to get the second out, and Smith finished the inning with a strikeout, but the damage was done, as Marian was retired in order, ending the game in an 8-0 loss.

Mallorie Beutel had Marian’s only base hit in the loss, while Ally Malone and Karly Anderson each walked twice. Smith (1-1) took her first collegiate loss, allowing seven hits and four runs in 6.2 innings of work. Lackman recorded one out in relief, allowing three hits and four runs.

Marian will be idle on Wednesday, before returning to action on Thursday for an outing against Bismarck State College and an exhibition against the Czech Republic National Team.
