MATT SNELL, JETS’ SUPER BOWL III HERO, DIES AT 84

Matt Snell, the bruising running back who powered the New York Jets to their iconic moment in a shocking Super Bowl III victory, died Tuesday morning on Long Island at the age of 84, the team announced.

Snell’s role in Jets history is closely linked to the upset that changed professional football. In the 16-7 victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, he carried the ball 30 times for 121 yards and scored New York’s only touchdown, a 4-yard run that put the Jets ahead, a lead they never lost.

“Matt Snell will forever hold a special place in the history of the New York Jets,” chairman Woody Johnson said in a statement. “He was the embodiment of toughness, selflessness and belief — traits that defined our organization’s proudest moments. His performance in Super Bowl III was nothing short of legendary.”

Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath credited Snell as essential to that title run.

“I’m really sad to hear that he passed,” Namath said. “Matt was not only a hell of a player — he was a terrific teammate and without him we wouldn’t have had a chance to win a championship.”

The third overall pick in the 1964 AFL Draft, Snell made an immediate impact, winning AFL Rookie of the Year honors. He became one of the franchise’s foundational players, leading the Jets in rushing in five of his first six seasons.

Snell finished his career with 4,285 rushing yards, still fourth in team history, with 24 touchdowns. He added 1,375 receiving yards and seven more scores and earned All-AFL second-team honors three times and first-team once.

A three-time AFL All-Star, Snell was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2015.

BRONCOS BRING BACK RB J.K. DOBBINS ON 2-YEAR DEAL

Broncos leading rusher J.K. Dobbins is sticking with Denver on a two-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

The deal will not become official until Wednesday, when the new NFL year begins.

Dobbins, 27, rushed for 772 yards and four touchdowns on 153 carries in his first season in Denver, adding 11 receptions for 37 yards to help the team reach the AFC championship game.

Since making his NFL debut in 2020 with the Baltimore Ravens, Dobbins’ 5.2 rushing average and 14.7 “big play” rushing percentage (10-plus-yard rushes) rank third among running backs with a minimum of 500 rushing attempts.

In six seasons with the Ravens (who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft), Los Angeles Chargers and Broncos, Dobbins has compiled 3,024 rushing yards on 582 attempts and 25 scores in 47 games (30 starts). As a receiver, he’s caught 70 passes for 367 yards and one touchdown.

In four career playoff games (one start), the former Ohio State star has rushed for 173 yards and one score on 43 carries, and has eight catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

RAIDERS: RAVENS ‘BACKED OUT’ OF TRADE FOR STAR DE MAXX CROSBY

The Ravens’ big splash for Maxx Crosby is off.

The Las Vegas Raiders announced Tuesday that Baltimore has “backed out” of its reported trade for the star defensive end, abruptly negating what had been one of the biggest moves of the offseason.

“The Baltimore Ravens have backed out of our trade agreement for Maxx Crosby,” the Raiders wrote on social media. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

The deal fell apart for medical reasons, according to the NFL Network, with reports indicating the Ravens were not comfortable assuming the risk associated with Crosby’s knee.

The trade was expected to send Crosby to the Ravens in exchange for two first-round picks (including the 14th overall pick this year), a significant return for a Raiders team in rebuilding mode and a rare, aggressive move from a Ravens club that has been seeking more disruption off the edge. Las Vegas also holds the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

Crosby’s health has been a topic of discussion for months. He finished last season playing through a knee injury before the Raiders shut him down with two games remaining, a decision that upset him enough to leave the team facility. Crosby had left knee surgery in early January and said the procedure was successful.

This latest surprise leaves both sides in the same position as before, just under a much brighter spotlight. Baltimore keeps its first-round picks and looks to the market for help with its pass rush. The Raiders hold on to their most recognizable yet disgruntled defensive player, despite a week of trade rumors pointing toward a new direction. Trades also can’t be finalized until the new league year begins Wednesday, but this one didn’t even reach that stage.

Crosby, 28, has been a Pro Bowl selection each of the past five seasons and was twice named a second-team All-Pro. He registered 10 sacks in 15 games for the Raiders last season and has 69.5 sacks in 110 career games (104 starts).

For now, the blockbuster is dead. Whether it remains that way, the Raiders seek another trade partner, or it becomes a renegotiation once everyone is comfortable with the medicals, is the next question.

REPORTS: INTERCEPTION-HUNGRY JETS SIGNING PRO BOWL CB NAHSHON WRIGHT

The New York Jets — who failed to intercept one pass last season — are signing Pro Bowl cornerback Nahshon Wright, who had five with the Chicago Bears, to a one-year contract worth up to $5.5 million, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

The Jets also are signing former New York Giants safety Dane Belton to a one-year, $4 million deal worth up to $6 million with incentives, per reports. New York already bolstered the secondary by acquiring five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Miami Dolphins on Monday for a 2026 seventh-round pick, multiple outlets reported.

Wright, 27, was selected to the Pro Bowl after his lone season with Chicago. He returned one interception 74 yards for a touchdown in the season opener against his previous team, the Minnesota Vikings, as the Bears went on to lead the league with 33 takeaways including 23 picks in 2025.

He also made 80 tackles, forced two fumbles, recovered three fumbles and defended 11 passes in 17 regular-season games (16 starts).

For his career, Wright has 117 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 16 passes defended in 50 regular-season games (19 starts) for the Dallas Cowboys (2021-23), Vikings (2024) and Bears. Dallas traded him to Minnesota in August 2024 and he played in one game for the Vikings before they released him in April 2025.

The Cowboys selected Wright in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Belton, 25, played the past four seasons for the Giants, who picked him in the fourth round of the 2022 draft. He started nine of 17 games last season and totaled 120 tackles, one interception, two sacks, three forced fumbles and five passes defended.

He has started 22 of 66 games and totaled 240 tackles, six interceptions, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 16 passes defended.

REPORTS: TEXANS MAKE KA’IMI FAIRBAIRN NFL’S HIGHEST-PAID KICKER

The Houston Texans are making nine-year veteran Ka’imi Fairbairn the NFL’s highest-paid kicker with a two-year, $13 million contract extension, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

Fairbairn, 32, would average $6.5 million annually in the new terms through 2028, pushing him ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Harrison Butker at $6.4 million.

Fairbairn appeared in 15 regular-season games in 2025, missing some action with a lower-body injury, and made 44 of 48 field-goal attempts — both league-high totals. He was 9 of 13 from 50-plus yards with a long of 57. He also made all 28 extra-point attempts.

Since signing with Houston as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA in 2016, Fairbairn has made 255 of 291 field-goal attempts (87.6%), including 51 of 69 from 50-plus yards, with a long of 61. He is 268 of 287 (93.4%) on PATs.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Jake Elliott makes $5 million annually, while the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday placed a one-year tender of $5.76 million on restricted free agent Brandon Aubrey. Other teams can try to sign Aubrey to offer sheets, with the Cowboys having the right to match them.

BRONCOS RE-SIGN LB ALEX SINGLETON TO 2-YEAR CONTRACT

The Denver Broncos re-signed inside linebacker Alex Singleton to a two-year contract on Tuesday.

The team did not release financial details but multiple reports put the total value at $15.5 million.

Singleton, 32, served as a physical and emotional leader for the league’s No. 2 unit in total defense last season.

He topped the Broncos with 135 tackles in 16 starts, missing just one game after surgery for testicular cancer.

Singleton has recorded 768 tackles, five sacks, five fumble recoveries and three interceptions in 95 games (66 starts) for the Philadelphia Eagles (2019-21) and Broncos.

REPORTS: PATRIOTS REEL IN WR ROMEO DOUBS ON $80M DEAL

Wide receiver Romeo Doubs agreed to a four-year deal worth up to $80 million with the New England Patriots on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Doubs, 25, had 202 catches in four seasons with the Packers and two huge playoff performances.

He nearly helped the Packers take down the Bears in January with eight receptions for 124 yards in a wild-card loss at Chicago. Doubs, a fourth-round pick in 2022, set his career marks in a 2023 wild-card win at Dallas that included a touchdown and 151 receiving yards.

The Patriots are set to release Stefon Diggs following one season in New England. Diggs had a team-leading 85 receptions in 2025, when no other wide receiver on the roster had more than Mack Hollins’ 46 catches.

Doubs recorded 55 catches for a career-high 724 yards with six touchdowns in 2025. Three of his touchdowns came in a tie game with Dallas.

But the Packers are walking a tightrope with the salary cap and already committed to a one-year extension with fellow 2022 draft classmate Christian Watson. Watson was a second-round pick (34th overall) in 2022.

Green Bay also used its 2025 first-round draft pick on wide receiver Matthew Golden, and Jayden Reed is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Reed was targeted 75 times to Doubs’ 72 when both were healthy in 2024. Reed missed most of last season with collarbone and foot injuries but led the Packers in receptions in 2024 with 55.

The Patriots drafted a wide receiver with their second-round pick in 2022, but Tyquan Thornton (50th overall) was released midseason in 2024. He played last season with the Chiefs and re-signed with Kansas City on Monday.

JETS REPORTEDLY REACQUIRE QB GENO SMITH IN TRADE WITH RAIDERS

Thirteen years after drafting Geno Smith, the Jets haven’t found a surefire solution to their quarterback woes and are bringing the 35-year-old back to New York for another shot.

The Raiders and Jets reportedly agreed to the trade on Tuesday sending Smith back to his original NFL team in return for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick.

The Jets also will receive a seventh-round pick (No. 2019 overall) along with Smith, who was awaiting his release by the Raiders before the start of the league year on Wednesday.

With an opportunity to head back to the Jets, Smith, 35, reportedly agreed to restructure his contract. ESPN reported the Raiders are paying most of the remaining tab, limiting New York’s financial commitment to just over the league minimum for veteran players.

The Jets selected Smith in the second round (39th overall) of the 2013 draft out of West Virginia. He played his first four seasons for the Jets and completed 57.9% of his passes for 5,962 yards and 28 touchdowns with 26 interceptions in 33 games (30 starts) from 2013-16.

Las Vegas is projected to use the No. 1 pick in next month’s draft on Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

There was urgency for the Raiders to trade or release Smith with an $8 million guarantee in his contract due to hit the books March 13.

Smith threw a league-worst 17 interceptions and completed 67.4% of his passes for 3,025 yards with 15 touchdowns in 15 starts last season. The Raiders were 2-13 in games he started and Smith was sacked a league-high 55 times.

Smith has completed 65.2% of his passes for 22,168 yards and 124 TDs with 89 interceptions in 109 regular-season games (98 starts) with the Jets, New York Giants (2017), Los Angeles Chargers (2018), Seattle Seahawks (2020-24) and Raiders.

His only playoff appearance was in 2022 with the Seahawks, a 41-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC wild-card game. Smith was honored as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year that season and made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and 2023.

TITANS ADD WR WAN’DALE ROBINSON ON 4-YEAR, $78M DEAL

New Titans offensive coordinator Brian Daboll welcomed a familiar face to Nashville when Tennessee reeled in wideout Wan’Dale Robinson.

Robinson, the No. 1 receiver for Daboll’s New York Giants in 2025, agreed to a reported four-year, $78 million deal Monday with Tennessee that includes $38 million guaranteed.

Robinson, 25, provides a top target for 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward after catching 92 passes for a career-high 1,014 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games (15 starts) for the Giants last season.

A second-round pick by New York in 2022, Robinson recorded 268 receptions for 2,465 yards and nine touchdowns in 54 games (33 starts) with the Giants.

Robinson consistently produced decent numbers despite a revolving door of signal-callers that included Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart.

DOLPHINS SIGNING VETERAN K ZANE GONZALEZ

The Miami Dolphins are signing veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

Gonzalez, 30, appeared in nine games last season for the Atlanta Falcons, making 19 of 22 field-goal attempts (86.4%) with a long of 56 yards. He was 7 of 9 from 50-plus yards. He also made 17 of 18 extra-point attempts.

For his career, Gonzalez has made 81% of his field goals (115 of 142) with a long of 57, and 163 of 171 PATs in 78 games for the Cleveland Browns (2017-18), Arizona Cardinals (2018-20), Carolina Panthers (2021), Washington Commanders (2024) and Falcons (2025). He did not appear in an NFL game in 2022 or 2023.

Cleveland selected Gonzalez in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

REPORT: LIONS SIGNING EX-CHIEFS RB ISIAH PACHECO

The Detroit Lions are signing former Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

Pacheco, 27, gives the Lions a new backfield partner for Jahmyr Gibbs after they traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans earlier this month.

Pacheco won two Super Bowl rings in four seasons with the Chiefs, who agreed to a three-year deal on Monday with former Seattle Seahawks running back and Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III.

A seventh-round pick (251st overall) in 2022, Pacheco rushed for 2,537 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught 88 passes for 554 yards and three scores in 51 games (42 starts) with Kansas City. He added 689 scrimmage yards and four TDs in 10 postseason games.

REPORTS: PACKERS RELEASING CB NATE HOBBS AFTER 1 SEASON

The Green Bay Packers are releasing cornerback Nate Hobbs after one expensive, injury-shortened season, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Hobbs, 26, signed a four-year, $48 million contract last March that included a $16 million roster bonus and a $1.2 million base salary in 2025. He would have been due a $6.25 million roster bonus on Friday.

He played in 11 games (five starts) and contributed two passes defensed and 27 tackles in fewer than 400 snaps.

Hobbs joined Green Bay after four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, who drafted him in the fifth round in 2021. He had 281 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions and 19 passes defensed in 51 games (38 starts) with the Raiders.

With Hobbs designated as a post-June 1 release, the move will save the Packers the roster bonus and $8.8 million against the salary cap, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Hobbs, once envisioned as a replacement for Jaire Alexander in Green Bay, became expendable with the Packers’ reported agreement Tuesday with veteran cornerback Benjamin St-Juste on a two-year, $10 million deal.

St-Juste, 28, recorded 37 tackles, one interception and seven passes defensed in 16 games (two starts) last season with the Los Angeles Chargers.

A third-round pick by Washington in 2021, he has 243 tackles, two picks, 41 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and three sacks in 70 games (47 starts) with the Commanders (2021-24) and Chargers.

REPORTS: BEARS SIGNING EX-LIONS WR/PR KALIF RAYMOND

The Chicago Bears are signing receiver/return specialist Kalif Raymond to a one-year, $5.1 million deal, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Raymond, 31, spent the past five seasons with NFC North rival Detroit and will be reunited with Bears head coach Ben Johnson, the Lions’ offensive coordinator from 2022-24.

Last season, Raymond caught 24 passes for 289 yards and one touchdown in 15 games. He also returned a league-high 32 punts for 241 yards and a touchdown and returned six kickoffs for 161 yards.

In 112 career games (33 starts), Raymond has 190 catches for 2,554 yards and nine touchdowns. He has returned three punts for scores and tallied 5,989 all-purpose yards with the Denver Broncos (2016), New York Jets (2017), New York Giants (2017), Tennessee Titans (2019-20) and Lions.

Chicago wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El was Raymond’s position coach in Detroit from 2021-24.

REPORTS: JAGUARS COULD DEAL WR BRIAN THOMAS JR.

Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. could be traded this offseason if general manager James Gladstone hears an offer to his liking, according to reports.

Jacksonville selected Thomas No. 23 overall out of LSU before Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen were hired and was coming off of a historically potent rookie season with 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024.

But last season was a different story.

Thomas tied for second in the NFL with 10 drops and his route-running and separation prowess touted by the previous regime wasn’t as evident. While Thomas encountered injuries, quarterback Trevor Lawrence established a better rapport with Parker Washington and the Jaguars traded for Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers in November.

Thomas missed three games and caught 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns.

Since Gladwell was hired, he has made 10 trades. Five of them involved a wide receiver or a draft pick used to select a wide receiver.

Teams reported to have interest in Thomas include the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

Gladwell executed two trades with the Browns last season, including the draft day bonanza to acquire Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. The franchises swapped cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Greg Newsome II in October.

REPORT: BILLS, TE DAWSON KNOX AGREE TO 3-YEAR CONTRACT

Tight end Dawson Knox is staying in Buffalo, agreeing to a three-year contract extension with the Bills, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

While contract details were not immediately available, the contract is believed to restructure his current deal to lower his scheduled $17 million salary cap number. His existing contract had one year remaining.

Speaking in January on “Monday Mornings With Mitch,” the podcast of former Bills center Mitch Morse, Knox said he anticipated the team to make changes to his contract.

“I know they want to bring me back, however they can’t know right now what the cap is going to be, how much money they’ll have to spend, what the market will be for tight ends,” Knox said. “Whether they’ll want to keep me under my current contact for one more year, or try to work out some type of extension.”

Knox, 29, said he communicated to the front office that he and his family have made Buffalo their home and he wanted to remain with the Bills.

Buffalo selected Knox in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

In 102 career games (83 starts), Knox has 229 catches for 2,694 yards with 27 touchdown receptions.

Last season, he appeared in all 17 games (12 starts) and caught 35 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns.

REPORTS: STEELERS ADDING RB RICO DOWDLE ON 2-YEAR DEAL

Running back Rico Dowdle is signing a two-year, $12.25 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, multiple media outlets reported.

Dowdle rushed for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons with different teams. He had a career-best 1,079 rushing yards in 2024 with the Dallas Cowboys before totaling 1,076 to go along with a career-high six rushing touchdowns in 2025 with the Carolina Panthers.

He highlighted last season with a franchise-record 473 scrimmage yards over a two-game span. His production dipped considerably down the stretch, and he made no bones about testing the free agent market.

The reported addition of Dowdle helps the Steelers overcome the loss of running back Kenneth Gainwell, who reportedly agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday.

Dowdle also will reunite with Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, who was the running back’s head coach in Dallas.

With the Steelers, there is no certainty at the moment who will play quarterback. Aaron Rodgers, the starter in 2025, is a free agent.

Dowdle, 27, has rushed for 2,540 yards and 10 touchdowns in 69 career games (26 starts) with the Cowboys and Panthers since entering the NFL undrafted out of South Carolina.

He has added 95 receptions for 690 yards and six touchdowns.

REPORTS: GIANTS SIGNING CB GREG NEWSOME II TO 1-YEAR DEAL

The New York Giants are signing cornerback Greg Newsome II to a one-year contract worth up to $10 million, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Newsome was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2021 and traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last October for cornerback Tyson Campbell and a swap of late-round draft picks. He became a free agent at the end of the season.

Newsome, 25, played in 17 games (16 starts) between the two teams and had 29 tackles, one interception and six passes defensed.

In 71 career games (58 starts), Newsome has 207 tackles, one sack and four interceptions, with one of them returned for a touchdown.

The Giants had a need at the position after Cor’Dale Flott decided Monday to sign a three-year, $45 million contract with the Tennessee Titans instead of re-sign with New York.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

BIG TEN ANNOUNCES 2026 MEN’S BASKETBALL POSTSEASON HONORS

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its All-Big Ten Men’s Basketball Teams and individual award winners for the 2025-26 season. A total of 15 student-athletes were selected to the All-Big Ten teams by the coaches and the media. Additionally, 11 student-athletes were awarded honorable mention status

Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg was named Big Ten Player of the Year by both the league’s coaches and the media. Lendeborg is the sixth Wolverine to earn the honor and the first since Nik Stauskas in 2014

Lendeborg stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.4 blocked shots, and 1.2 steals per game while averaging just shy of 30 minutes per game. The Pennsauken, N.J. native has scored in double figures in 24 of Michigan’s 31 games and secured north of 10 rebounds on seven occasions.

Fellow Wolverine Aday Mara was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, joining two-time winner Gary Grant in 1987 and 1988. The sophomore leads the Big Ten ranks fifth in the country with 80 total blocked shots and 2.58 blocks per game

Both the coaches and media selected Illinois’ Keaton Wagler as Freshman of the Year. Wagler averaged a team-leading 17.9 points and broke the Illinois freshman scoring record, previously held by Cory Bradford in 1998-99, also a previous Big Ten Freshman of the Year honoree. Wagler also joins D.J. Richardson (2010) and Kofi Cockburn (2020) as previous Illini Freshman of the Year

Nebraska freshman Braden Frager was named Sixth Man of the Year, a first for the Huskers. Frager’s 11.7 points per game were good for third on the team, while his 5.9 rebounds led the squad. A three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Frager posted six 20-point games this season, including a January 13th contest that saw him go 8-for-13 from three-point range.

The coaches selected Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg as Coach of the Year. This is the second Big Ten Coach of the Yeah honor for Hoiberg, who has led the Huskers to a program record 15 Big Ten victories and 26 wins in total, tying the school record. The Huskers finished tied for second in the Big Ten regular-season standings, the program’s best finish since a runner-up showing in the Big Eight in 1992-93.

The media chose Michigan’s Dusty May as its Coach of the Year. May led the Wolverines to the number one seed in the Big Ten Tournament and their 16th conference title. The Wolverines enter postseason play with a 29-2 record, highlighted by 24 wins by double figures, including 13 by 20 or more, 10 by 30 or more, and a Big Ten-record seven victories by 40 or more points, along with one win by 50 or more points.

Wisconsin assistant coach Sharif Chambliss is this year’s recipient of the Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year Award. A former Wisconsin captain, Chambliss has spent the last five seasons on the Badger bench. Chambliss, who helped the Badgers secure the 2022 Big Ten regular season title remains active in the Madison community by volunteering for the Badger Challenge, Balance and Believe, Garding Against Cancer events, among others.

The Howard Moore Award, which honors former Wisconsin student-athlete and assistant coach Howard Moore, is presented to a men’s basketball assistant coach who demonstrates commitment to the development of student-athletes on and off the court; who has made a measurable contribution to the betterment of their community; and who has shown a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The recipient shall have made a demonstrable positive impact on the lives of those with whom they interact.

Moore has had an impact on the Big Ten Conference at all levels, playing on the Wisconsin basketball team from 1992-95, holding an assistant coaching role for the Badgers from 2006-10 and 2016-19 and serving as an analyst on the Big Ten Network. His impact extends far beyond basketball where his Moore Foundation was an extension of the way he lives his life: being selfless and putting others first. His career was tragically cut short in May of 2019 when an accident with a drunk driver claimed the lives of his wife and daughter and left him with life-altering disabilities.

The Big Ten also recognized 18 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

The awards are voted on by conference coaches and a select media panel. The complete list of All-Conference honorees and individual award winners is below.

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: NICK MARTINELLI, NORTHWESTERN OUST PENN ST.

Nick Martinelli had 24 points and nine rebounds and Jayden Reid added 14 points and nine assists as Northwestern defeated Penn State 76-66 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament Tuesday in Chicago.

The 15th-seeded Wildcats (14-18) advance to face No. 10 seed Indiana in the second round on Wednesday.

Ivan Juric paced 18th-seeded Penn State with 22 points and six rebounds. The Nittany Lions (12-20) shot 51.1% from the field compared to 50.9% for the Wildcats. But the visitors struggled to sustain momentum, committing 17 turnovers that Northwestern converted into 24 points.

Northwestern set a Big Ten tournament record with 21 assists. Jake West contributed five assists to follow Reid. Tre Singleton chipped in nine points for the Wildcats, who were without Arrinten Page (illness).

Maryland 70, Oregon 60

David Coit scored 17 points to help the 17th-seeded Terrapins earn a wire-to-wire victory over the 16th-seeded Ducks in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

Elijah Saunders made 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range, scoring all 15 of his points from deep for Maryland (12-20), which will oppose ninth-seeded Iowa on Wednesday.

Nate Bittle scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds to pace Oregon (12-20), which finishes the season with its worst record since 2008-09. Kwame Evans Jr. added 14 points and nine rebounds.

BIG 12 TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: BYU ROLLS BEHIND AJ DYBANTSA’S 40

AJ Dybantsa exploded for 40 points, Kennard Davis Jr. heated up in the second half with 15 points, and BYU pulled away for a 105-91 victory over Kansas State in the first round of the Big 12 tournament on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Mo.

Dybantsa also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists. Robert Wright III added 14 points — all in the first half. The 10th-seeded Cougars (22-10) will face seventh-seed West Virginia in the second round on Wednesday night.

Kansas State (12-20), the 15th seed, was led by P.J. Haggerty’s 27 points. Nate Johnson finished with 19 points, including 14 in the first half, and Khamari McGriff added 13 points.

The Cougars closed the first half on a 7-0 run, highlighted by consecutive fastbreak dunks by Dybantsa, to take a 50-49 lead into the locker room. BYU opened the second half with consecutive treys by Aleksej Kostic and Davis to quickly extend its lead to 56-49, and the Cougars never trailed the rest of the way.

Arizona State 83, Baylor 79

Anthony “Pig” Johnson racked up 19 points off the bench as the 12th-seeded Sun Devils downed the 13th-seeded Bears.

The Sun Devils (17-15) advance to play fifth-seeded Iowa State, which is ranked No. 7 nationally, on Wednesday afternoon.

Andrija Grbovic added 14 points for Arizona State, with Santiago Trouet hitting for 13 points and taking nine rebounds. Cameron Carr led Baylor (16-16) with 25 points and seven rebounds. Isaac Williams IV added 15 points, and Tounde Yessoufou hit for 14.

Cincinnati 73, Utah 66

Jalen Celestine scored 19 points and Baba Miller added 11 points, 14 rebounds and six assists as the ninth-seeded Bearcats beat the 16th-seeded Utes.

The Bearcats advance to face eighth-seeded UCF in the second round on Wednesday afternoon. Cincinnati (18-14) is still fighting for a spot in the NCAA Tournament and took a step toward that goal, with the latest win its seventh in the past nine games. Moustapha Thiam tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearcats.

Terrence Brown led all scorers with 22 points as Utah (10-22) finished its season with six straight losses. Keanu Dawes added 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Utes’ 10 wins are their fewest in a campaign since they went 6-25 in 2011-12.

Oklahoma State 92, Colorado 83

Anthony Roy poured in 24 points, Christian Coleman tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds and the 14th-seeded Cowboys went on to beat the 11th-seeded Buffaloes.

Oklahoma State (19-13) advances to face sixth-seeded TCU on Wednesday night. Jaylen Curry added 15 points and five rebounds for the Cowboys, who won the rebounding battle 44-34 and outscored Colorado 40-30 in points in the paint.

The Buffaloes (17-15) were led by Bangot Dak, who had 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Barrington Hargress finished with 18 points and nine assists.

ACC TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: PITT UPENDS STANFORD AT LAST SECOND

Damarco Minor’s putback of his own missed shot with less than a second remaining gave Pitt a stunning 64-63 victory against Stanford in the first game of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Tuesday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.

Barry Dunning Jr.’s 16 points, Roman Siulepa’s 14, Cameron Corhen’s 12 and Omari Witherspoon’s 11 paced No. 15 seed Pitt (13-19), which will meet seventh-seeded North Carolina State in the second round Wednesday. Minor’s basket was his second field goal on 10 attempts.

Pitt, which has won four of its last six games, was the last team to make the 15-team field, needing overtime in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Syracuse to qualify.

Freshman Ebuka Okorie led 10th-seeded Stanford (20-12) with 14 points. Benny Gealer had 11 points and AJ Rohosy added 10 points. It was a devastating outcome for the Cardinal, who closed the regular-season on a four-game winning streak and was considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament.

SMU 86, Syracuse 69

Boopie Miller poured in 25 points and Jaron Pierre Jr. pumped in 21 points as the 11th-seeded Mustangs had a big second half to pull away from the 14th-seeded Orange, winning in the ACC tournament’s first round and ending a four-game losing streak in Charlotte, N.C.

SMU (20-12) faces No. 24 Louisville, the sixth seed, in Wednesday’s second round. Jaden Toombs provided 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and Samet Yigitoglu and Corey Washington both posted 12 points.

Syracuse (15-17) ended the season on a six-game losing streak. Nate Kingz scored 25 points, but he didn’t score in the final eight-plus minutes. Tyler Betsey’s 15 points off the bench gave Syracuse its only other double-figure scorer.

Wake Forest 95, Virginia Tech 89 (OT)

Myles Colvin scored 18 points as the 13th-seeded Demon Deacons beat the 12th-seeded Hokies in overtime in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

The first-round game between the Hokies (19-13) and the Demon Deacons (17-15) marked the 50th overtime game in ACC Tournament history. Wake will face fifth-seeded Clemson on Wednesday night.

Colvin was one of seven players to score in double figures for Wake. Sebastian Akins had 14 points and Tre’Von Spillers and Mekhi Mason each scored 13. Ban Hammond powered Virginia Tech with 23 points and Jailen Bedford tallied 17 points and eight rebounds.

TOP SG CALEB HOLT COMMITS TO ARIZONA

Five-star prospect Caleb Holt committed to Arizona on Tuesday, choosing the Wildcats over five other teams.

Holt’s commitment is huge for Arizona, which is expected to lose a big chunk of its current roster to graduation and the 2026 NBA Draft. The current team (29-2) is ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll heading into the Big 12 conference tournament.

The 247Sports composite ranks Holt as the No. 1 shooting guard and the No. 4 overall player. Per the service, he is the No. 2 recruit in Wildcats history — second only to Deandre Ayton, now of the Los Angeles Lakers — and tops in the tenure of head coach Tommy Lloyd.

It is his relationship with Lloyd that led the 6-foot-5, 200-pound Holt to choose the Wildcats over Alabama, Arkansas, Houston, Kentucky and Providence, he told ESPN’s “First Take” on Tuesday. Lloyd was Holt’s coach last summer with USA Basketball’s U19 team.

“He took me under his wing. He saw my potential,” Holt told ESPN. “He put me in games and believed in me and instilled a lot of confidence in me. Under pressure in the quarterfinals against Canada, the game was close and he did not blink at all; he stayed the same throughout the game. That showed me a lot about him.”

Holt grew up in Alabama but plays his high school basketball at Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His was the second commitment in the Wildcats’ 2026 class, joining four-star guard Cameron Holmes from Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz.

The 247Sports composite lists Holmes as the No. 34 overall player in the class.

NBA ROUNDUP: BAM ADEBAYO’S 83-POINT EFFORT RANKS 2ND ALL TIME

Bam Adebayo produced the second-highest single-game scoring total in NBA history, putting up 83 points as the host Miami Heat beat the Washington Wizards 150-129 on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old center scored 31 points in the first quarter en route to passing Kobe Bryant (81 points in 2006) for second place on the single-game list. Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point outing has stood as the record since 1962.

In 42 minutes on Tuesday, Adebayo shot 20-for-43 from the floor, 7-for-22 from 3-point range and 36-for-43 at the free-throw line. He also grabbed nine rebounds.

Abebayo set NBA single-game records for most free throws made and most free-throw attempts. Chamberlain and Adrian Dantley were the prior record-holders for made foul shots with 28 each. Dwight Howard had the old mark for free-throw attempts of 39, which he reached twice.

Washington has lost nine straight games, five short of its longest skid of the season. Alex Sarr led the Wizards with 28 points.

Lakers 120, Timberwolves 106

Luka Doncic posted 31 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists as Los Angeles earned a victory over visiting Minnesota in a battle of playoff-hopeful Western Conference teams.

Austin Reaves scored 31 points and Deandre Ayton added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who pulled level with the Timberwolves, both with 40-25 records. Los Angeles holds the tiebreaker for fourth place in the West thanks to sweeping the three-game season series.

Anthony Edwards scored 14 points for the Timberwolves while shooting 2 of 15 from the floor and 1 of 10 from 3-point range. Juluis Randle also had 14 while Naz Reid and Ayo Dosunmu each added 13 as Minnesota lost its second consecutive game following a five-game winning streak.

Pistons 138, Nets 100

Jalen Duren scored 26 points in three quarters and Cade Cunningham collected 21 and 15 assists as Detroit seized control early, stopping a season-worst four-game skid with a wire-to-wire rout of Brooklyn in New York.

Duren converted three dunks and shot 9 of 10 from the field as the Pistons played a flawless game and earned their sixth win in the teams’ past eight meetings. Cunningham, who sat out Saturday’s loss, made eight of 10 shots and finished with 15 assists, three shy of his career high.

The Nets were unable to win three straight for the second time this season and lost for the 11th time in 13 games. Brooklyn shot 42% and made 13 of 38 3-point attempts. Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 19 points but Brooklyn’s other four starters — Noah Clowney, Nic Claxton and rookies Drake Powell and Nolan Traore — were a combined 6 of 21 from the field.

Kings 114, Pacers 109

Devin Carter scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as Sacramento beat Indiana, sending the visiting Pacers to their 10th straight loss.

Sacramento rallied from a 20-point third-quarter deficit behind Carter, who made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points during a 17-5 run that put the Kings ahead 109-103 with 1:46 remaining. Maxime Raynaud had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Kings, while Russell Westbrook tallied 16 points and nine assists. Rockets 113, Raptors 99

Kevin Durant scored a game-high 29 points, while Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr. chipped in 23 points apiece as Houston pulled away in the fourth quarter of a victory over visiting Toronto.

Durant made 12 of 16 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, to pace the balanced offensive attack. Smith shot 8 of 14 from the field and sank three 3-pointers, and Thompson added 10 free throws and a team-high six assists.

RJ Barrett paced the Raptors with 25 points and six rebounds, while Scottie Barnes added 24 points. Toronto shaved a 10-point deficit to 73-72 late in the third before the Rockets pulled away.

Spurs 125, Celtics 116

Victor Wembanyama scored 39 points, hitting a career-high-tying eight 3-pointers, and added 11 rebounds to lead rising San Antonio to a victory over short-handed Boston in a battle between two of the top NBA teams.

With the Spurs ahead 106-105, Wembanyama delivered a powerful dunk followed by a 3-pointer, his eighth of the game, on back-to-back possessions, the latter with 5:57 remaining. De’Aaron Fox added 25 points for the Spurs, who won their fifth straight and are 16-1 in their last 17. Stephon Castle hit for 18 points and Devin Vassell added 14.

Jaylen Brown, Boston’s leading scorer this season, had only eight points before being ejected from the game with 3:38 remaining in the second quarter, with the Celtics up by two. Derrick White led the Celtics with 34 points while Jayson Tatum scored 24 and Ron Harper Jr. added a career-high 22 points.

Hawks 124, Mavericks 112

Jalen Johnson scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter to help Atlanta to a win over visiting Dallas for its seventh straight victory.

With the game tied at 97-97, Johnson scored on a three-point play and added a 3-pointer to put Atlanta ahead 105-99 to prevent the Hawks from blowing an 18-point second-half lead. Atlanta also got 29 points from Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Onyeka Okongwu scored 18 with nine rebounds.

In its eighth straight loss, Dallas was led by Klay Thompson, who came off the bench to make five 3-pointers and score 21 points. Khris Middleton notched 16 points while Cooper Flagg, Daniel Gafford and Naji Marshall each scored 14. Flagg added 12 rebounds and five assists.

76ers 139, Grizzlies 129

Cameron Payne made all eight of his 3-point attempts and scored a career-high 32 points as Philadelphia used a 21-2 fourth-quarter run to storm past visiting Memphis.

Kelly Oubre Jr. added 31 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which announced prior to the game that All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey (finger) will miss at least three more weeks. Quentin Grimes (22 points) and VJ Edgecombe (21) also helped make up for Maxey’s absence as the Sixers avoided their fifth loss in six games.

Memphis lost its fifth straight game despite 26 points and eight assists from Ty Jerome. GG Jackson pitched in with 15 points and Cedric Coward notched 13 points and 16 boards for the Grizzlies, who led by as many as 14 in the second half.

Suns 129, Bucks 114

Devin Booker scored 27 points and dished seven assists while leading Phoenix to a victory over host Milwaukee.

Phoenix sank a season-high 24 3-pointers (on 51 attempts) to begin its six-game road trip with a third consecutive victory. Jalen Green added 25 points while Royce O’Neale scored 21 and Collin Gillespie compiled 12 points, nine boards and nine assists.

Kyle Kuzma scored a season-high 33 points and shot 6-for-10 from 3-point range, but the Bucks took their sixth loss in seven contests. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Myles Turner each added 22 points, and Ousmane Dieng logged 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Bulls 130, Warriors 124 (OT)

Matas Buzelis capped a career-best 41-point performance with five points in overtime, Josh Giddey recorded his second straight triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 17 assists and Chicago outlasted Golden State in San Francisco.

Buzelis, Giddey and Tre Jones, who finished with 22 points, combined to do all the Chicago scoring in the overtime as the Bulls, taking advantage of a tired Golden State squad playing the second night of a back-to-back, dominated the extra five minutes to the tune of 12-6 to snap a two-game losing streak.

Four Warriors, including Kristaps Porzingis in his second home game in San Francisco, scored 17 points for Golden State, which was 1.4 seconds away from a regulation win before Jalen Smith drew a foul on a desperation 21-footer and hit a pair of free throws to create a 118-all tie. LJ Cryer, Gui Santos and Pat Spencer also scored 17 apiece.

Hornets 103, Trail Blazers 101

Brandon Miller had 23 points and nine rebounds and Kon Knueppel added 15 points to help Charlotte overcome a 19-point deficit and record a victory over host Portland.

LaMelo Ball had 14 points in 22 minutes before fouling out as Charlotte improved to 11-1 in its last 12 road games. Ryan Kalkbrenner added 13 points and Miles Bridges and Sion James had 11 points apiece as the Hornets won for the seventh time in the past nine games.

Jerami Grant scored 24 points and Deni Avdija added 22 points and seven assists for the Trail Blazers, who lost for the fourth time in the past six games. Scoot Henderson scored 17 points off the bench.

LAKERS’ LUKA DONCIC FINED $50K FOR GESTURE TOWARD REFS

The NBA fined Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic $50,000 for “directing an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture” to a game official.

The fine, announced Tuesday, was for an incident that occurred Sunday night in the Lakers’ 110-97 home victory over the New York Knicks.

With 4:35 left in the third quarter, Doncic planted himself in the lane and thought he had taken a charging foul. When no call was made, Doncic rubbed his fingers together on both hands to make the “money” sign, apparently trying to imply the official was being paid.

Doncic scored 35 points on 11-of-25 shooting (5 of 16 from 3-point range) and added eight rebounds and four assists.

The guard leads the NBA with a scoring average of 32.5 points per game and is third in assists with 8.4. The 27-year-old has been named a first-team All-NBA player five times.

BASEBALL

USA STUNNED BY ITALY, NEEDS HELP TO REACH WBC QUARTERFINALS

Kyle Teel, Sam Antonacci and Jac Caglianone all homered for Italy, which moved to the top of the World Baseball Classic Pool B standings by holding on to upset the United States 8-6 on Tuesday night in Houston.

Italy, which raced out to an 8-0 lead before Team USA rallied in the final four innings, is 3-0 in Pool B play and would clinch a spot in the quarterfinals with a win against Mexico in Wednesday’s finale.

An Italy win Wednesday would secure the final Pool B spot for Team USA, which finished 3-1.

If Mexico (2-1) beats Italy, those teams along with the United States will finish Pool B at 3-1. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, which would be 1-1 for all three teams. The second tiebreaker is the fewest runs per out in head-to-head games.

Team USA allowed 11 runs against Italy and Mexico and recorded 54 outs (.2037 runs per out), while Mexico got 24 outs against Team USA and gave up five runs (.2083 runs per out). Italy yielded six runs against Team USA on Tuesday over 27 outs (.2222 runs per out).

As a result, Team USA needs Italy to win, which would eliminate Mexico, or Mexico to win while allowing at least five runs (assuming the game ends in nine innings). Mexico and Italy would advance, eliminating the United States, if Mexico wins and permits four or fewer runs in a nine-inning game.

Italy starter Michael Lorenzen earned the win, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two over 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Teel hit a solo blast and Antonacci added a two-run homer off Team USA starter Nolan McLean in the second. Caglianone hit a two-run shot in the fourth off Ryan Yarborough before Italy added three more runs in the sixth. J.J. D’Orazio scored on an error by Team USA pitcher Brad Keller and Dante Nori lofted a sacrifice fly before Antonacci scored on Keller’s wild pitch.

Gunnar Henderson’s solo shot began Team USA’s comeback bid in the sixth before Pete Crow-Armstrong hit the first of his two homers, a three-run blast, in the seventh to make it 8-4. Roman Anthony had an RBI single in the eighth and Crow-Armstrong went deep with one out in the ninth off Ron Marinaccio to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Greg Weissert entered and gave up a single to Bobby Witt Jr. before striking out Henderson and Team USA captain Aaron Judge to earn the save.

Teel was 2-for-2 before exiting with a leg injury following a sixth-inning double. Caglianone also had two of Italy’s six hits.

Witt and Will Smith had two hits apiece for Team USA, which posted 11 hits.

McLean gave up three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over three innings.

WBC ROUNDUP: CANADA EDGES PUERTO RICO, HAS CHANCE TO TOP GROUP A

Canada leaned on patience at the plate and a locked-in bullpen to squeeze past Puerto Rico 3-2 on Tuesday night in Pool A action in San Juan.

Canada improved its record to 2-1, while Puerto Rico dropped to 3-1, setting up a crucial showdown for the Canadians against Cuba (2-1) on Wednesday. If Canada defeats Cuba, it would reach the WBC quarterfinals for the first time and secure the top spot in Pool A, finishing tied with Puerto Rico but holding the tiebreaker. A loss would eliminate Canada at 2-2, leaving it behind Puerto Rico and Cuba.

Puerto Rico struck first in the opening inning when Nolan Arenado punched a single to center to bring home the game’s first run. Canada answered in the third without needing a big swing, scoring twice on back-to-back RBI walks to Tyler O’Neill and Tyler Black.

The decisive run came an inning later. Owen Caissie doubled and scored on Abraham Toro’s single to right for a 3-1 edge. Puerto Rico cut it to one in the bottom half on Martin Maldonado’s RBI groundout, but that was the last time either team crossed the plate.

Canada starter Jordan Balazovic worked the first three innings, allowing one run on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts. Logan Allen and Brock Dykxhoorn followed with three solid innings apiece, and Canada earned a save. Puerto Rico starter Jose De Leon allowed two runs and two hits in 2 2/3 innings, with six relievers finishing up.

Israel 6, Netherlands 2

Israel broke open a tight game with a five-run sixth inning and pulled away to beat the Netherlands in Pool D play in Miami. Both teams were eliminated from contention for the knockout rounds ahead of the game.

Jake Gelof’s two-run single gave Israel the lead for good, and Matt Mervis followed with a two-run double. Both teams wrapped up their Pool D play, with Israel finishing third at 2-2 and the Netherlands fourth at 1-3.

The Dutch did their scoring early, pushing across two runs in the first on Xander Bogaerts’ fielder’s choice and a Didi Gregorius sacrifice fly. Israel got on the board in the second when Gelof doubled home Noah Mendlinger, then finally leveled it at 2-2 in the sixth on RJ Schreck’s RBI single.

With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Tyler Whitaker lifted a sacrifice fly to score Collin Price and give host Houston the walk-off win over Baltimore in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Orioles’ Coby Mayo pushed his spring training average to .500 by going 4-for-4 with five RBIs, which included a two-run homer off Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. in the second. Mayo also stole a base. Starter Levi Wells gave up two runs and three hits over 3 2/3 innings.

McCullers fanned four in his three-inning stint while allowing three hits, two runs and one walk. Cam Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Jack Winkler cracked a bases-clearing double in the sixth to give Houston a 5-4 lead.

Daylen Lile and Brady House drilled back-to-back homers in the second to ignite Washington’s win over host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

Johnathon Thomas added a solo homer leading off the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and give the Nats the lead for good. Starter Foster Griffin whiffed four over three innings while allowing three hits and one run.

REDS RHP HUNTER GREENE (ELBOW) OUT UNTIL JULY

Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene is out until July due to bone chips around his right elbow.

A surgery to remove the fragments is required before an official appraisal of Greene’s status for the 2026 season can be made. Removal of bone spurs can become a possible signal of ligament damage, which the operation scheduled for Wednesday is expected to gauge.

Greene visited multiple specialists including Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Tommy John surgery on Greene in 2019, and had been bothered by right elbow issues this month.

The team said ElAttrache advised an injection late in the 2025 season in response to Greene experiencing soreness in the elbow. The relief was temporary and not a solution for eradicating loose bodies that the surgery in Los Angeles is now targeting.

Reds manager Terry Francona said on March 4 that Greene was experiencing stiffness in his elbow.

The 26-year-old flamethrower made 19 starts last season as the Reds reached the postseason for the first time since 2020.

“We need to get this,” Francona said. “You know, you’re asking the guy to go out there and throw as hard as he can. We need to make sure he’s OK.”

Left-hander Andrew Abbott will be Cincinnati’s Opening Day starter against the Boston Red Sox on March 26.

Greene made just one spring training appearance, allowing four runs on five hits with no strikeouts in an inning against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The right-hander is one of the hardest throwers in baseball, averaging 99.5 mph on his fastball last season, tops among pitchers who threw at least 1,250 pitches. He was clocked at more than 100 mph a total of 296 times, which was No. 2 in MLB last season.

But he has battled injuries throughout his career. In 2022 he missed time with a shoulder strain, 2023 with hip pain and 2025 with a right groin strain that caused two injured-list stints and limited him to 107 2/3 innings.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft by Cincinnati has lived up to the hype when healthy.

He posted an ERA of 2.76 or better in each of the past two seasons, earning an All-Star nod in 2024 when he had a 9-5 record and career-best 2.75 ERA in a career-high 150 1/3 innings.

Over four major league seasons, Greene has a 25-29 record and 3.65 ERA in 91 starts, striking out 617 batters while walking 179.

NATIONALS SIGN RHP ZACK LITTELL TO ONE-YEAR, $7M DEAL

The Washington Nationals signed right-hander Zack Littell to a one-year, $7 million contract on Tuesday.

The deal includes a $3 million salary for 2026 and a $12 million mutual option for 2027 with a $4 million buyout.

Littell, 30, can earn up to $2.5 million more in performance bonuses based on total innings pitched.

He was 10-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 32 starts in 2025 split between the Tampa Bay Rays (8-8 in 22 starts) and Cincinnati Reds (2-0 in 10).

Littell is 34-29 with three saves and a 3.88 ERA in 234 career games (79 starts) over eight seasons with five different teams.

In a corresponding move on Tuesday to create room on the roster, the Nationals designated left-hander Richard Lovelady for assignment.

Washington selected Lovelady, 30, off waivers on Jan. 29 from the New York Mets, who signed him as a free agent on Oct. 23, 2025. He is a career 5-13 with three saves and a 5.35 ERA in 118 games (zero starts) for six teams in six seasons between 2019 and 2025.

PHILLIES, LHP JESUS LUZARDO FINALIZE $135M EXTENSION

Phillies left-hander Jesus Luzardo finalized a five-year contract extension worth $135 million on Tuesday, a deal that keeps him in Philadelphia through the 2031 season.

Neither side wanted to consider other options. Luzardo was entering the final season of his previous contract, which remains in place for 2026. The extension kicks off next season, and the Phillies hold an option for 2032 worth $32.5 million.

“I love the organization,” Luzardo said at a press conference Tuesday attended by every teammate still present at spring training. “Top to bottom.”

Luzardo, 28, is coming off a career year in which he went 15-7 with a 3.92 ERA, 216 strikeouts and 57 walks. He pitched 183 2/3 innings across 32 starts.

He said his bond with teammates and trust in the organization compelled both sides to get a deal done.

Team president Dave Dombrowski said he has been motivated since October to make sure Luzardo was part of the organization’s future. It’s not uncommon for Dombrowski to extend pitchers before deadlines arrive, with a similar tactic applied with right-hander Zack Wheeler.

The Phillies have their entire starting rotation under contract through at least 2027: Wheeler, Luzardo, Cristopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter. Sanchez and Wheeler were National League Cy Young runners-up in 2025 and 2024, respectively.

Luzardo pitched in Games 2 and 4 of the 2025 NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting the former before appearing as an extra-innings reliever in Game 4. Though he took the loss in both games, he gave up just three runs (two earned) over 7 2/3 innings for a 2.35 ERA, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Philadelphia acquired Luzardo from the NL East rival Miami Marlins in a December 2024 trade. In seven major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics (2019-21), Marlins (2021-24) and Phillies (2025), he is 41-41 with a 4.19 ERA, 775 strikeouts and 237 walks in 137 appearances (121 starts).

Panthers 4, Red Wings 3

Carter Verhaeghe scored the tying and go-ahead goals 1:15 apart in the waning moments of regulation as Florida rallied for a home victory over Detroit in Sunrise, Fla.

Down 3-2, Florida pulled goaltender Daniil Tarasov (25 saves) for the extra skater, and Verhaeghe sent a drive from the point through plenty of slot traffic and past screened Detroit goalie John Gibson (24 saves) to tie things with 1:30 left in regulation. Then the Panthers surged into the Detroit zone off a Red Wings turnover, where Matthew Tkachuk, who assisted on Verhaeghe’s tying score, found him again for a successful wrister in the dying seconds.

Blue Jackets 5, Lightning 2

Acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in a trade last week, Garland broke a 24-game scoreless drought with two markers on Monday. Now he has four goals through two games with his new team. The Blue Jackets also got tallies from Ivan Provorov, Dante Fabbro and Kirill Marchenko. Zach Werenski and Sean Monahan had two assists apiece for Columbus, which opened a three-game road trip by moving to 15-2-3 in the past 20 contests.

In dropping to 1-6-0 in their past seven games and playing a third match in four nights, the Lightning got goals from Gage Goncalves and J.J. Moser. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves.

Oilers 4, Avalanche 3

Connor McDavid scored a tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and added an assist, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and Edmonton beat Colorado in Denver.

INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES

COLTS FOOTBALL

TEXANS SIGN T BRADEN SMITH TO 2-YEAR, $25M DEAL

The Houston Texans agreed to a two-year, $25 million deal with longtime Indianapolis Colts tackle Braden Smith.

The contract includes $13.5 million fully guaranteed, agent Michael Perrett of Priority Sports told ESPN on Tuesday.

Smith, who turns 30 on March 25, started 105 of his 107 games with the Colts since 2018, mostly at right tackle.

Indianapolis drafted Smith in the second round in 2018. He made 13 starts last season, missing time in concussion protocol.

It’s the latest move with an offensive lineman for the Texans, who reached a one-year, $7 million extension last week with veteran tackle Trent Brown and re-signed right guard Ed Ingram to a three-year, $37.5 million deal on Monday.

INDIANA PACERS

GAME REWIND: PACERS 109, KINGS 114

For most of Tuesday night in Sacramento, the Pacers appeared on their way to snapping their nine-game skid. But Devin Carter had other ideas.

The second-year guard scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Kings (16-50) to a 114-109 victory over Indiana (15-50).

The Pacers remain winless since the All-Star break and will head back to Indianapolis on Wednesday after an 0-4 West Coast road trip.

The Pacers led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, but the Kings came all the way back, taking a 99-98 lead on Carter’s 3-pointer with 4:16 remaining.

After a timeout, Aaron Nesmith knocked down a triple of his own to put Indiana back in front, only for Carter to answer with a layup on the other end to tie the game at 101. Carter then drilled another three to give the Kings the lead again with 3:09 to play.

Carter’s third three in the fourth quarter made it 107-103 with 2:07 left. He added two more free throws on the Kings’ next possession to cap a stretch where he scored 13 straight points for Sacramento.

Carter scored 24 points in just 16 minutes off the bench, going 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range.

Nesmith led Indiana with 29 points in the loss, but 24 of them came in the first half. Obi Toppin added 17 points in 15 minutes, while rookie guard Kam Jones tallied 14 points and nine assists.

The Pacers were shorthanded, with All-Star forward Pascal Siakam sidelined due to a sprained knee, starting point guard Andrew Nembhard out with a sore lower back and neck, and veteran T.J. McConnell unavailable because of a sore hamstring.

Still, the Pacers controlled the game for much of the night before the Kings rallied.

Nesmith was the Pacers’ offense early on Tuesday. The sixth-year forward scored 11 of Indiana’s first 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Kings led for the majority of the first quarter, but the Pacers closed the frame with a 6-0 spurt to take a 25-24 lead into the second quarter.

The visitors extended their lead in the ensuing frame, using a 10-2 run to push the margin to double digits. Nesmith scored 13 more points in the second quarter to help the Blue & Gold maintain their lead.

Jay Huff’s 3-pointer and Nesmith’s layup in the final minute extended Indiana’s lead to 59-42 by halftime. The Pacers limited the Kings to just 34.7 percent shooting over the first two quarters.

Toppin — playing in the second half for the first time since returning from a right foot stress fracture that sidelined him for four months — scored nine points in the first 3:34 of the third quarter.

The Pacers led by as many as 20 points in the frame, but the Kings fought back, closing the frame with a 10-2 run to cut Indiana’s lead to 82-72 entering the fourth quarter.

The hosts continued their charge, opening the final frame with a 9-3 run to pull within four with over 10 minutes remaining. Devin Carter’s bucket made it 90-88 with 8:39 to go, but Jones drilled a three on the other end to give the Pacers a little cushion.

The Kings finally surged ahead a few minutes later, with Carter’s three putting Sacramento up 99-98 with 4:16 remaining. Carter stayed hot down the stretch to propel Sacramento to victory.

Huff finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Indiana. Fellow center Micah Potter added 11 points and seven boards off the bench.

Kings center Maxime Raynaud recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Russell Westbrook added 16 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

The Pacers will return to Indianapolis for a back-to-back set, hosting Phoenix on Thursday and New York on Friday.

Inside the Numbers

Nesmith had the third-highest-scoring regular season game of his career. His 24 points in the first half are the most he has ever scored in a half.

Toppin reached double figures for the first time in six games since returning from injury. His 17 points were his most since he tallied 20 in the season opener against Oklahoma City on Oct. 23.

Jones set new career highs for points (14) and 3-pointers made (four) and was just one assist shy of his second career double-double.

The Pacers had given up 125 or more points in eight straight games — the longest streak in franchise history — but snapped that streak on Tuesday. Indiana limited Sacramento to just 24 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second.

The Kings outscored Indiana 42-27 in the fourth quarter and 56-31 over the final 16:39 of Tuesday’s contest.

Raynaud recorded the 15th double-double of his rookie season on Tuesday. It was his fourth double-double in his last five games.

You Can Quote Me On That

“The end of the third quarter obviously was a big problem for us. And their bench just played unbelievable the last 15 minutes of the game, just tremendous. So you’ve got to give them credit. Their shotmaking, their aggression, all that was big time. We had some pretty good looks that didn’t go in. That was disappointing.” -Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle on the difference in the game

“He’s gaining rhythm, he’s gaining conditioning. He hit a couple threes…Those are good signs. He’s got to tolerate these incremental increases in minutes and then we can perhaps gradually ramp it up from there.” -Carlisle on Toppin’s performance playing into the second half for the first time since returning from injury

Stat of the Night

In 56 career games prior to Tuesday, Devin Carter had not scored more than 19 points. He scored 22 points in the fourth quarter alone to power the Kings’ comeback.

Noteworthy

The Pacers and Kings split the season series, with the home team winning both games.

With Tuesday’s loss and Charlotte’s win in Phoenix, the Pacers were officially eliminated from the playoffs.

Two-way forward Jalen Slawson was active and saw his first action since signing a two-way contract with the Pacers on Feb. 28. Slawson did not score but tallied three rebounds and three assists and was +14 in 11 minutes off the bench.

Kings guard Malik Monk exited in the second half with a right ankle injury and did not return.

Up Next

After a four-game West Coast road trip, the Pacers will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to host Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, March 12 at 7:00 PM ET.

IU ATHLETICS

IU ATHLETICS MOURNS THE PASSING OF FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CLARENCE DONINGER

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Clarence Doninger, Indiana University’s athletic director from 1991–2001 and a member of IU Basketball’s 1957 Big Ten Championship team, passed away last night at his Indianapolis home surrounded by loved ones. He was 90 years old.

“IU Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the Doninger family on the loss of Clarence,” said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. “Words cannot adequately express the impact Clarence had on Indiana University and our department through his lifetime of service to his alma mater. He loved Indiana University as much as anyone I’ve ever known. I was incredibly fortunate to work for Clarence during his time leading our department; he had a profound impact on me as a leader, a close friend, and a trusted advisor.”

Doninger served as Indiana University’s Athletic Director from 1991–2001, overseeing a period of sustained success and growth for the department. During his decade-long tenure, IU’s athletic programs captured 27 Big Ten regular season or postseason championships and won two NCAA Championships in Men’s Soccer. Additionally, the department added four varsity sports under his leadership: Women’s Soccer, Women’s Water Polo, Rowing, and Field Hockey.

Doninger’s impact on Indiana University extended well beyond his years as athletic director. An Evansville native, he earned his B.S. in Business from IU in 1957 while playing for the 1956–57 Big Ten Championship Men’s Basketball team. He subsequently earned his law degree from IU in 1960 and transitioned into a highly successful law career in Indianapolis.

While his legal career flourished, Doninger remained deeply involved with his alma mater, holding national leadership roles for both the IU Alumni Association and the IU Varsity Club. He was honored for his service with the Clevenger Award (1990), IUAA President’s Award (2000), the Distinguished Alumni Service Award (2005), and the Bicentennial Medal (2020). He was inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Judy; the couple’s children, Gretchen and Eric; and five grandchildren – Lilly, Grayson, Charlotte, Isabella, and Emmett.

VANBRANDT POWERS INDIANA TO WIN

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– Indiana picked up its 12th win by run rule this season on Tuesday (March 10) when it defeated Loyola Chicago, 14-6 in six innings, at Andy Mohr Field.

Indiana’s Aly VanBrandt led the way, hitting three home runs to power the team to the win, including the walk-off to secure the run rule in the bottom of the sixth.

The Hoosiers have won three in a row and are now 19-5 on the year.

INDIANA 14, LOYOLA CHICAGO 6 (F/6)

KEY MOMENTS

• Loyola Chicago hit a home run over the left field wall on the first pitch when Alli Pawloicz went yard to go up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

• The Ramblers would make it a 4-0 game in the top of the second on a run scored from a fielder’s choice and a bases-clearing double hit by Nat Lesnicki.

• Indiana would chip away from there though with a sac fly from Avery Parker, an RBI single from Josie Bird and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third, Indiana got the Ramblers’ lead down to 4-3 at that point.

• VanBrandt hit the first of her home runs in the fourth when she hit a 2-run homer over the left field wall to put Indiana ahead 5-4.

• Indiana’s lead was brief as Loyola tied it at 6-6 in the top of the fifth.

• After the game was tied up, Indiana scored a barrage of runs, charting eight in the final two innings, including six in the fifth inning.

• Following a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, Indiana picked the bats up right away to end the gmae quickly. Cassidy Kettleman bunted for a single to get on base before VanBrandt hit a home run over the right field wall to seal the run rule on the walk off homer.

NOTABLES

• Aly VanBrandt’s three home runs is a career high and also tied the program’s single game record. The last Hoosier to hit three home runs in a game was Brianna Copeland at Ohio State (March 31, 2025).

• VanBrandt’s seven RBI in the game also tied the program’s single-game record. VanBrandt had seven RBI in the team’s win over Portland State earlier this season (Feb. 13).

SOPHOMORE CLASS SHINES AS HOOSIERS ROLL RAIDERS

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A big offensive day was just what the doctor ordered for the Indiana Baseball team (7-9, 1-2 B1G) on Tuesday (March 10) evening. The Hoosiers scored 12 runs – scored in just three different innings – on 16 hits to roll past visiting Wright State (5-9, 0-0 Horizon) at Bart Kaufman Field. For head coach Jeff Mercer, it was the first win of his IU tenure over his alma mater.

Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie set the tone in the first inning when he clobbered a three-run home run over the bullpen in left field. IU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and led for the entire nine innings. Koskie had a team-high five RBIs on three hits to help anchor the middle of IU’s lineup. His sophomore counterpart, third baseman Will Moore, had a career-high four hits and reached all six times he came to the plate.

Even with a shortened bullpen, IU’s pitching staff pieced together nine solid innings on the mound. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski (W, 1-0) earned his first career win after throwing two innings to start the game. He allowed just one run on a solo home run.

The contest turned when graduate student right-handed pitcher Kaden Jacobi recorded a three-pitch strikeout with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Jacobi entered the game in a 2-0 count and proceeded to get IU out of a massive jam. The Hoosiers would go on to score three runs in the home half of the inning to put the game away.

A five-spot crooked number in the bottom of the eighth helped seal the deal for good. Koskie’s two-run double and an RBI single from Hanley helped provide insurance for the IU bullpen. Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Vogel put up a scoreless ninth inning to end affairs on Tuesday evening. IU used eight pitchers, including redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Evan O’Neill – who made his collegiate debut in the win.

IU will head out of town this weekend for a four-game road trip that takes the program to both Oregon (March 13-15) and Vanderbilt (March 17) over spring break. The next home series will come in two weeks when Minnesota makes the trip to Bart Kaufman Field (March 20-22).

• The Hoosiers had seven walks at the plate compared to five strikeouts.

• Five different players had multi-hit games, led by four from Will Moore.

• All eight IU pitchers recorded at least one strikeout.

Notes to Know

• Sophomore Will Moore had the best game of his career in Tuesday’s win. He reached safely in all six plate appearances with four hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch. He’s the third member of the sophomore class (Jake Hanley at Evansville – April 30, 2025 and Cooper Malamazian at Penn State – March 7, 2025) to record a four-hit day for the Hoosiers. Moore is the 23rd player in the Jeff Mercer with a four-hit contest.

• When sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie produces runs, he does it in bunches. He had a five-RBI day on Tuesday, thanks in part to a three-run home run and a two-run double. In his collegiate career, he has more games with four-plus RBIs (3) than he does with just one RBI (1). Today was also the second three-hit day of his career.

• IU has now scored 10-or-more runs on 105 occasions during the head coach Jeff Mercer era (since 2019). It’s also the 41st time, and second this season, that the Hoosiers have produced at least 15 hits in a ballgame. All 16 base knocks in the win over Wright State came from underclassmen.

PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL

SMITH VOTED FIRST-TEAM ALL-BIG TEN FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue senior point guard Braden Smith has been named first-team All-Big Ten in voting done by both the coaches and media, the league office announced today.

Smith is joined on the first team by Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg, Illinois’ Keaton Wagler, Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr., and Nebraska’s Pryce Sandfort.

Smith becomes the fifth Purdue player in modern history (since 1948) to be named to the first team three times, joining Robbie Hummel, Rick Mount, Dave Schellhase and Terry Dischinger on the list. He is the first Big Ten player to be named first-team All-Big Ten three times since Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ (2017-19).

Smith is having a sensational senior season, averaging 14.9 points, 8.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals while shooting 46.2 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from 3-point range and 82.3 percent from the free throw line. In conference play only, Smith averaged 16.5 points, 8.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals while shooting 48.0 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from deep and 88.3 percent from the free throw line.

He has scored at least 10 points, 25 different times this season and has surpassed 20 points nine times. He has recorded double-doubles in eight games this season and has 13 games of at least 10 assists.

Smith is the only player in the country to have at least 450 points, 250 assists and 100 rebounds this season and is the first player in NCAA history to have at least three seasons of 450 points, 250 assists and 100 rebounds.

The 450-250-100 splits have been accomplished just eight times in Big Ten history. Smith has accounted for three of them.

Smith is one of the most-decorated point guards in NCAA history, being named a first-team All-American and Cousy Award winner during the 2024-25 season. For his career, he is the only player in NCAA history to have at least 1,800 points and 1,000 career assists and when you add in his 648 rebounds, Smith is still the only player in NCAA history with even 1,500 points, 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds.

He is the Big Ten’s all-time leader in assists (1,029) and needs 48 assists to become the NCAA all-time leader in career assists.

IRISH DOMINATE ELON IN 16-5 ROAD WIN

ELON, N.C. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-2, 2-2) dominated the Elon Phoenix (3-3, 0-0) in a 16-5 road victory at Elon on Tuesday afternoon. The Irish have held their opponents to single-digit scoring six times, as this the fewest goals allowed this season since the 25-0 shutout against Central Michigan.

The Irish outshot the Phoenix 38-12 as they dominated the draw circle 15-6. Freshman Uma Kowalski finished with a game-high seven draw controls as she ranks fourth in the ACC with 56 draws this year.

What a day for Madison Rassas as she scored five goals on just eight shots while also recording two draw controls and a ground ball. She’s amongst the top five in the conference with 22 goals on the season and is averaging 2.75 goals per game.

She was followed by Kate Timarky, who finished with three goals for her fifth hat trick of the season. She is third in the ACC with 23 goals so far this season and is third in goals per game (2.88).

Emma Murphy finished with a career-high five points as she scored two goals and dished out three assists in the win. Grace Maroney recorded four points with two goals and two assists.

Charley Bacigalupo finished with three points as she recorded one goal, two assists, and two ground balls in the win.

Wynter Jock tied her career-high as she scored twice with back-to-back goals in the closing minutes of the period. Meghan O’Hare finished with one goal and three draw controls.

Defensively, Franny O’Brien finished with three caused turnovers and a ground ball. She was followed by Julia Carr with two caused turnovers and three ground balls and Maura Irish with two caused turnovers, one ground ball, and one draw control.

Goalkeeper Ceci Patterson finished with seven saves and a .583 save percentage. In the ACC she ranks fourth with a save percentage of .461, fifth with a 7.88 goals against average, and sixth with 53 saves this season.

The Irish posted an early 3-0 lead to start as Bacigalupo assisted on the first two goals of the day as Timarky put the Irish on the board and was followed by a finish from Rassas. Maroney found the back of the net on the free position shot to put Notre Dame up 3-0 at 7:38 in the first.

Elon responded with a free-position goal of their own, but another free-position goal from Emma Murphy made it a three-goal game yet again at 4-1.

Timarky would knock down one last goal as Murphy found her on a cut to the goal with just seven seconds on the clock to give Notre Dame a 5-1 advantage heading into the second quarter. The Irish won every draw in the first quarter for a 7-0 advantage in the draw circle in the first 15 minutes of play.

The Phoenix took advantage of the player-up opportunity, scoring first in the second period to make it 5-2 before scoring again at 3:47 to cut it to two.

With just 2:00 minutes left, Maroney wrapped around the right side of the crease to send home the final goal of the half to make it 6-3 at halftime.

A dominant third and fourth period from the Irish would ultimately get them to a running clock in the final quarter. The Irish outscored the Phoenix 4-1 in the third quarter with two goals from Rassas and one goal apiece from Murphy and Bacigalupo as the Irish led 10-4 heading into the final period.

Rassas sparked the scoring frenzy to start the fourth as she scored back-to-back goals for her fourth and fifth goals of the day to extend the lead 12-4.

She was followed by back-to-back goals from Jock, before Timarky would go on to cap off her hat trick with just three seconds on the clock.

The Irish secured the road win with seven Irish players in the scoring column for a 16-5 victory.

The last time the Cardinals entered tourney play as the No. 2 seed was in 2024.

– The Cardinals continue to be a staple of March Madness in the MAC, securing their 36th program appearance in the conference tournament. Ball State’s dominance is especially clear over the last quarter-century, having advanced to Cleveland for 24 of the past 26 seasons. With an all-time tournament record of 27–33, the team has fought their way to seven championship games, ultimately crowning their efforts with titles in 2009 and 2025. Under head coach Brady Sallee, the Ball State women’s basketball team has made it to Cleveland for the MAC Tournament 11 times, including reaching the championship game in 2014, 2022, and 2025. The 2025 championship was a historic milestone, marking Sallee’s first conference tournament title in 21 years of head coaching and the program’s first since 2009.

– Ball State head coach Brady Sallee owns a 11-11 overall Mid-American Conference Tournament mark. The last time the Cardinals reached the final game was in 2025 when Ball State defeated Toledo, 65-58.

– Ball State owns a 7-2 record in the 2025 MAC Tournament bracket. The two losses for the Cardinals game against top-seeded Miami (OH).

– A Cardinal win will send Ball State to the semifinal round for the fifth-straight season. The second-seeded Cardinals will play the winner of quarterfinal game No. 4 against the No. 3 seed UMass or the No. 6 seeded Toledo Rockets. Ball State defeated UMass at home this season and swept the home-away series against Toledo.

Back-to-Back 16 MAC Wins:

This seasons 16 Mid-American Conference wins for Ball State ties a program record for most league victories in a season. The Cardinals achieved that same goal the last three years – 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26.

Ball State vs. UMASS/Toledo Semifinal Round:

If Ball State were to face UMass in the semifinals Friday it will be its first-ever meeting in tourney play. The Cardinals and the Rockets have met a total of eight times. Although, Toledo owns a 6-2 record in tourney play versus Ball State the Cardinals have won their last two meetings:

Donahue ranks 3rd in the nation in steals (4.19 SPG) and has already set a school record with over 110 steals this season. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLACES FOUR ON ALL-MAC

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Following a historic regular season that saw the Ball State women’s basketball team capture a share of its second consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season title for the first time in program history, four Cardinals have been recognized with prestigious postseason honors, the league office announced today.

Bree Salenbien and Tessa Towers headlined the awards as All-MAC first team selections. Sophomore Grace Kingery was tabbed as an All-MAC honorable mention recipient, and freshman standout Aniss Tagayi earned spots on both the MAC All-Freshman Team and the MAC All-Defensive Team.

Salenbien joined the Cardinals as a graduate transfer for the 2025-26 season after a standout career at Gonzaga. In her lone season in the MAC, Salenbien has been a force on both ends of the floor. She is second in scoring for the Cardinals this season averaging 15.1 points per game and has been named MAC Player of the Week three times. She set a career-high 32-point performance in dominant win over Bowling Green while recording seven double-doubles this season. Despite facing significant injury setbacks throughout her collegiate journey, Salenbien’s resilience and “three-level scoring threat” has been vital to the Cardinals’ 25-win season.

In her breakout 2025–26 campaign, Towers has evolved from a limited-minute reserve into a dominant interior force for Ball State. Averaging 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, she leads the team in both categories, highlighted by ten double-doubles and a career-high 29-point performance this season at Kent State. Towers’ efficiency is among the best in the country, ranking 20th nationally in field goal percentage (56.9%) and leading the MAC in both shooting accuracy and total field goals made.

Kingery has evolved into a premier deep threat for Ball State during her sophomore campaign. Recently, she exploded for a career-high 24 points and seven 3-pointers in a victory over Ohio. Kingery ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per contest. On the national stage, she sits ninth in 3-pointers per game (2.94) and 12th in total triples (91). She continues to lead the league in these categories, while maintaining a stellar 41.0% shooting clip from beyond the arc.

In her breakout debut, Montpellier, France native Tagayi proved to be a dominant two-way force. After anchoring the Cardinals with lockdown defense and a massive 18-point, 11-rebound double-double against Akron, she earned a spot on both the all-freshman and all-defensive teams.

Now, No. 2 seed Ball State—led by 14th-year head coach Brady Sallee—heads to Cleveland on a mission to defend its tournament title from 2025. The Cardinals tip off the 2026 MAC Tournament against No. 7 Bowling Green this Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 4 p.m.ss at Rocket Arena.

BALL STATE BASEBALL

BASEBALL LEADS EARLY BUT FALLS TUESDAY NIGHT AT KENTUCKY

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Ball State baseball team got out to a 2-0 lead but fell 10-3 to No. 25 Kentucky on Tuesday night at Kentucky Proud Park.

The Cardinals (7-8) got a sacrifice fly by Ryan Muizelaar to plate Brayden Huebner in the third inning, and Gavin Balius later scored on a wild pitch to stake the visitors to the early 2-0 edge. Kentucky (15-2) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame and one in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

Ball State knotted the score at 3-3 in the fifth after Muizelaar doubled and scored on an RBI groundout from Brett Griffiths. The Wildcats crossed home plate five times in the bottom of the inning and once

each in the seventh and eighth frames on their way to a home win.

Balius, Muizelaar, Jacob Gillis, Taber Stokes and Maalik Perkins each had a hit for the Cardinals, but the double from Muizelaar was the lone extra base hit of the night for the visitors.

Zach Kwasny started a staff game for Ball State and tossed a scoreless first inning. Jeremy Jones (0-2) allowed five runs in an inning of work to suffer the loss.

Oliver Boone (1-0) was credited with the win after giving up one run in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. Jayce Tharnish, Luke Lawrence, Ryan Schwartz and Tagger Tyson posted two hits each for the Wildcats.

“We made too many mistakes to beat a good team,” Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. “We take great pride in playing good defense and today we gave them too many free opportunities. We will regroup and get ready to play EMU.”

Ball State returns home to host Eastern Michigan for three games starting Friday afternoon.

“SPORTS EXTRA”

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1901    John McGraw, manager of the new American League’s Orioles, signs Charlie Grant, trying to pass off the black infielder as a Cherokee Indian named Tokohoma. The skipper’s scheme to secretly integrate the major leagues unravels in Chicago when White Sox president Charles Comiskey objects to Baltimore’s new player after recognizing the team’s second baseman’s true identity.

1933    A significant earthquake during an exhibition game in L.A. sends the Cubs and Giants scurrying to second base until the tremors stop. The seismic event, which occurs along the 46-mile-long Newport-Inglewood Fault, is estimated at magnitude 6.3.

1933    Rogers Hornsby returns to the Cardinals as a player after being fired as the Cubs’ manager last August. After a six-year absence, the ‘Rajah’s return to the Redbirds will be short-lived when he is claimed on waivers in July by the crosstown AL’s Browns, who make him the skipper of the last-place club, replacing the recently resigned Bill Killefer.

1953    Braves’ owner Lou Perini proposes a ban on any major league franchise shift to an existing minor league city until October 1st. Boston, which owns the Milwaukee minor league franchise, had invoked its territorial privilege last week to block the Browns’ attempt to shift their franchise to Milwaukee.

1953    The Dodgers defeat the A’s, 4-2, in the first game played in Holman Stadium, their Grapefruit League ballpark at the team’s spring training complex in Vero Beach, better known as Dodgertown. Fifty-five years later, Carl Erskine, the game’s starting pitcher, will return to play the national anthem on his harmonica as an 81-year-old at the club’s last game at the storied facility.

1957    Representative Emanuel Celler, chair of a congressional committee investigating baseball, calls Commissioner Ford Frick a czar. The New York congressman takes exception when the baseball boss warns the major league owners against commenting on the Supreme Court’s recent decision on pro football falling under antitrust rules.

1958    American League president Will Harridge informs the circuit’s umpires that wearing a helmet is mandatory for batters this season, reinforcing the mandate passed by the owners’ 7-1 vote at their December meeting in Colorado Springs. The Red Sox dissent, knowing their slugger, Ted Williams, adamantly opposes wearing headgear, asserting that the protective equipment will interfere with their hitters’ timing.

1961    At Palm Springs, former president Dwight Eisenhower is a no-show at the Angels’ first-ever exhibition game, an 8-3 victory over the Cubs. Ike had been scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, but decided to go fishing instead.

1973    “I didn’t think I’d have to tell them everytime I cross the street. He made his point and he was right. I made a mistake. I should have told him.” – WILLIE MAYS, commenting on his fine for leaving the Mets during spring training. Mets manager Yogi Berra will fine Willie Mays $500 for leaving the club without permission and missing Saturday’s workout. The aging superstar left the team for two days during spring training without notice and flew to California to be with his wife.

1988    California Angels manager Gene Mauch, citing health issues, takes a leave of absence and is replaced by Cookie Rojas. The Halos’ skipper will officially announce his retirement in two weeks, leaving the game with a managerial record of 1,902 wins and 2,037 losses during his 26-year tenure in the dugout with the Phillies, Expos, Twins, and California.

2001    Preston Wilson, the franchise’s first 30-30 player, signs a $32 million five-year contract with Florida. The 26-year-old Marlin center fielder, the stepson and nephew of former major leaguer Mookie Wilson, was obtained from the Mets in the Mike Piazza deal in 1998.

2002    Boston replaces Joe Kerrigan, the once-popular skipper fired last week, with Grady Little, who will manage the team for two years, compiling a 188-136 (.580) record and making one appearance in the postseason as the AL wild card. The Red Sox do not renew their new manager’s contract when he becomes the target of fans’ angst for not replacing Pedro Martinez in the eighth inning of Game 7 of the ALCS, a contest the team loses in the eleventh on Aaron Boone’s walk-off home run.

2004    The first contest played at Petco Park, the Padres’ new home, establishes the record for the best-attended game in college baseball history when 40,106 fans watch Tony Gwynn’s San Diego State Aztecs beat the University of Hawaii, 4-0. The previous mark of 27,673 was established in 2002 when state rivals LSU and Tulane met in New Orleans’s Superdome.

2006    First baseman Nick Johnson (.289, 15, 74) and the Nationals agree to a $16.5 million, three-year contract extension. The 27-year-old first baseman, who signed a $3.2 million, one-year deal in January to avoid arbitration, has often been injured since making his big league debut with the Yankees five years ago.

2010    Todd Helton and the Rockies agree to a $9.9 million contract extension that takes the first baseman through the 2013 season. The 38-year-old fan favorite, who has played his entire career in Colorado, hit .325 with 15 home runs, driving in 86 runs last season after undergoing back surgery at the end of the 2008 season.

2018    Unsigned free-agent Mike Moustakas, taking a significant pay cut, signs a one-year contract to stay with the Royals, the team he set a franchise record for home runs (38) last season. The 28-year-old All-Star third baseman agrees to 6.5 million, having turned down a qualifying offer of $17.4 million at the start of the off-season.
