MLB

MLB ROUNDUP: ANDREW PAINTER WINS BIG-LEAGUE DEBUT AS PHILLIES EDGE NATS

Andrew Painter struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the visiting Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday.

The Phillies’ top pitching prospect, Painter (1-0) allowed one run, four hits and a walk against a Nationals team that entered the game tied for the major league lead in runs scored. Kyle Schwarber and Adolis Garcia homered for the Phillies, who had lost three of their first four games.

Daylen Lile had three hits for Washington, which had won three of its first four contests. James Wood came up with the tying run on second and two outs in the ninth, but Brandon Marsh tracked down his liner to deep left for the final out.

Philadelphia scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings against Zack Littell (0-1) to stake Painter to a 3-0 lead. Jhoan Duran worked the ninth for his second save.

Giants 9, Padres 3

Willy Adames led off the game with a homer and finished with a career-high-tying four hits to go with two RBIs and San Francisco’s offense finally exploded during a victory over host San Diego.

Jung Hoo Lee had three hits and three RBIs, and Matt Chapman (solo homer) and Rafeal Devers had two hits apiece as the Giants racked up 16 hits. Heliot Ramos drove in two runs for the Giants, who went 6-for-12 with runners in scoring position while beating San Diego for the second straight night. Giants starter Logan Webb (1-1) gave up three runs and three hits over six innings.

Jackson Merrill and Miguel Andujar had RBI hits for the Padres, who have lost four of five games to start the season. German Marquez (0-1) struggled in his San Diego debut, serving up two homers while pitching just three innings. He gave up four runs and eight hits.

Yankees 5, Mariners 0

Max Fried pitched seven innings of three-hit ball as New York blanked host Seattle, their third shutout win in five games this season.

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the Yankees evened the three-game series at one victory apiece. New York’s Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice each had two hits. Fried (2-0) walked one and struck out six.

Seattle’s Josh Naylor lined a single to center with two outs in the fourth inning. It was Naylor’s first hit of the season, breaking an 0-for-20 slump. The Mariners’ only other hits off Fried came in the seventh, an infield single by Julio Rodriguez and a two-out liner to right by Brendan Donovan. Logan Gilbert (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Dodgers 4, Guardians 1

Shohei Ohtani gave up one hit over six scoreless innings in his season pitching debut and Max Muncy hit a home run as Los Angeles earned a victory over visiting Cleveland.

Andy Pages collected two hits and two RBIs and Teoscar Hernandez drove in his first run of the season. Ohtani (1-0), who was placed in the No. 5 spot of the rotation to start the season as the Dodgers look to manage his pitching workload, walked three batters and struck out six.

Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee (0-1) gave up one run on four hits over four innings after his start was in doubt because of shoulder inflammation that developed during his Opening Day outing at Seattle. Brayan Rocchio broke up the Dodgers’ shutout bid with an RBI single in the ninth.

Cardinals 3, Mets 0

Andre Pallante and a quartet of relievers combined on a three-hit shutout for host St. Louis, which beat New York in the middle game of a three-game series.

Ivan Herrera had a two-run double in the third and Ramon Urias added a homer leading off the seventh for the Cardinals, who recorded their first shutout since last Sept. 16. Pallante (1-0) gave up all three hits over five-plus innings.

Kodai Senga took the hard-luck loss after whiffing nine over six innings. The Mets were blanked for the first time since a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins in the season finale last Sept. 28 — a defeat that eliminated New York from playoff contention.

Rangers 8, Orioles 5

Danny Jansen hit a three-run homer for one of his three hits as Texas beat host Baltimore.

Ezequiel Duran and Corey Seager also homered for the Rangers, who have won four in a row. Rangers starter Jacob deGrom was strong through three innings, but he was charged with three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in his rescheduled start. Neck stiffness delayed his season debut from the weekend.

Pete Alonso, the Orioles’ highly acclaimed free-agent signee, smacked his first home run with his new team. Taylor Ward had four hits from Baltimore’s leadoff position, and he and Gunnar Henderson each produced a two-run double.

Pirates 8, Reds 3

Oneil Cruz hit a pair of home runs and Ryan O’Hearn and Bryan Reynolds hit back-to-back home runs as Pittsburgh’s offense broke out during a win over host Cincinnati.

O’Hearn and Reynolds’ successive homers highlighted a five-run second inning. Cruz smacked a towering 444-foot blast in the fourth inning, and later added a two-run homer in the ninth to pad Pittsburgh’s lead after Cincinnati cut it to 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth.

Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler didn’t allow a hit but issued six walks through 4 1/3 innings. The Reds were held to one hit through seven innings before Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart opened the eighth with back-to-back home runs.

Angels 2, Cubs 0

Jose Soriano allowed two hits over six shutout innings and Logan O’Hoppe hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning as Los Angeles won at Chicago.

Relievers Chase Silseth, Drew Pomeranz and Jordan Romano followed Soriano to complete a four-hit shutout. Romano got the last two outs for his second save.

Cubs starter Jameson Taillon tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Ian Happ saw his three-game homer streak come to an end, as he went 0-for-2 with two walks.

Astros 9, Red Sox 2

Hunter Brown allowed one run and struck out eight in six innings to help Houston stretch its winning streak to four games  by beating visiting Boston.

The only hit Brown (1-0) allowed was a Connor Wong RBI double in the fifth. Cody Bolton struck out five over the final three innings to earn his first career save.

Yordan Alvarez and Cam Smith each hit solo home runs for the Astros. Alvarez, Christian Walker and Carlos Correa each had two hits and two RBIs in the win. Ceddanne Rafaela homered for the Red Sox. Brayan Bello (0-1) yielded six runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 innings.

Marlins 9, White Sox 2

Griffin Conine, Liam Hicks and Owen Caissie drove in two runs apiece as host Miami defeated Chicago.

After Janson Junk’s 4 1/3-inning start, four relievers — Andrew Nardi, Anthony Bender (1-0), Calvin Faucher and Pete Fairbanks — combined to deal eight strikeouts and hold Miami hitless over the final 4 2/3 frames.

Erick Fedde (0-1) took the loss, allowing six hits, one walk and four runs (three earned) in five innings. The White Sox, who are coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, made three errors, all on throws to the plate. Two of the miscues were charged to center fielder Luisangel Acuna.

Athletics 5, Braves 2

Andy Ibanez and Jacob Wilson both drove in their first two runs of the season to help the Athletics earn their first victory of the year over host Atlanta.

Ibanez went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in two. Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. A’s starter Aaron Civale (1-0), signed as a free agent in the offseason, worked five innings and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk, striking out three.

Drake Baldwin hit his third homer of the season to lead the Braves.

Blue Jays 5, Rockies 1

Max Scherzer pitched six effective innings in the 41-year-old’s season debut and Toronto defeated visiting Colorado.

Scherzer (1-0) allowed one run, four hits and one walk while striking out four in six innings. Jesus Sanchez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes each had two hits and an RBI to help Toronto split the opening two games of the three-game series. It was the fourth win in five games for Toronto, while Colorado has dropped four of five.

Hunter Goodman hit a solo home run for the Rockies. TJ Rumfield added three hits. Colorado starter Ryan Feltner retired his first eight batters before Andres Gimenez lined an infield single off his right hip with two outs in the third. Feltner finished the inning with a walk and groundout but did not return for the fourth because of a contusion in the hip area. He allowed no runs, one hit and one walk with four strikeouts in three innings.

Brewers 6, Rays 2

Gary Sanchez and Jake Bauers homered and Brandon Woodruff pitched five effective innings in his season debut, pacing Milwaukee past visiting Tampa Bay.

The result spoiled the first appearance for Tampa Bay starter Shane McClanahan in 972 days. McClanahan, who was back on a major league mound for the first time since Aug. 2, 2023, allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three in a 79-pitch outing.

Woodruff (1-0), who sustained a season-ending lat injury in late September that kept him out of the playoffs, allowed two solo homers and four hits while striking out six without a walk. Woodruff also missed all of 2024 following shoulder surgery.

NBA

NBA ROUNDUP: LAKERS DOWN CAVS AS LEBRON JAMES EARNS RECORD 1,229TH WIN

Luka Doncic had 42 points and 12 assists, and LeBron James scored 14 points in his NBA-record 1,229th career win, powering the Los Angeles Lakers to a decisive 127-113 victory over the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Los Angeles won for the 13th time in its last 14 games, clinching a playoff spot and the Pacific Division title earlier in the night when the Phoenix Suns lost. The Lakers sit third in the Western Conference, two games ahead of the Denver Nuggets.

James surpassed Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most combined regular season and playoff wins. The all-time scoring leader added five rebounds and six assists against the Cavaliers, with whom he spent 11 seasons over two stints.

Doncic returned from a one-game suspension to become the third-youngest player with 15,000 career points at 27 years, 31 days (James holds the mark at 25, 79). Rockets 111, Knicks 94

Jrue Holiday scored 30 points and Deni Avdija recorded 28 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as Portland scored a crucial win over Los Angeles in Inglewood, Calif.

Portland pulled within a half-game of Los Angeles for eighth place in the Western Conference, a spot that would require just one play-in win instead of two to reach the playoffs. The Blazers turned in an inspired performance, taking the lead late in the first quarter and never relinquishing it. Toumani Camara added 17 points and Scoot Henderson finished with 15.

Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 23 points and eight rebounds. Darius Garland added 20 points, Brook Lopez put up 18, John Collins had 17 and Jordan Miller contributed 16.

STEELERS OWNER ON AARON RODGERS: ‘I EXPECT AN ANSWER’ BY NFL DRAFT

The Pittsburgh Steelers expect Aaron Rodgers will make his decision soon.

Owner and team president Art Rooney II said Tuesday at the NFL annual meetings in Phoenix that he believes Rodgers is close to a decision on whether to re-sign with the Steelers, retire or go elsewhere.

“I have not talked to him,” Rooney told a group of reporters. “Coach (Mike McCarthy) has been in contact with him pretty regularly, and I think a decision is probably coming soon.”

Asked whether the Rodgers question would be settled before the NFL draft, Rooney replied, “I would say by the draft, I expect an answer, yeah.”

Rodgers, 42, joined the Steelers a year ago after 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and two with the New York Jets. He helped Pittsburgh go 10-7 and win the AFC North, but after a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans to begin the playoffs, head coach Mike Tomlin resigned.

McCarthy told reporters earlier Tuesday that he did not want to discuss a timeline for Rodgers to make a decision, and on an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show on March 4, Rodgers said he hadn’t been given a deadline.

The Steelers brought back journeyman quarterback Mason Rudolph, who appeared in 26 games and started 14 for the Steelers from 2019-21, 2023 and 2025, last season. Will Howard is the only other quarterback on the roster.

Rodgers, the four-time MVP and 10-time Pro Bowler, completed 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Steelers last year.

Pittsburgh will host the 2026 NFL Draft from April 23-25. The Steelers hold the 21st overall pick.

“Thank you for believing in me, for trusting me, and for pushing me to develop every single day,” he wrote. “Your leadership and guidance have shaped me not only as a player, but as a man.”

Rioux finished his Florida career with seven points, six rebounds and one assist in 16 minutes. He had a dunk in the Gators’ first-round NCAA Tournament win against Prairie View A&M on March 20.

PORTAL ROUNDUP: GEORGIA, BUTLER TOP SCORERS LOOK TO TRANSFER

Jeremiah Wilkinson, who led Georgia with 17.4 points per game this season, plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens April 7, his representatives told On3 Monday.

The 6-foot-1 guard spent one season at Georgia after playing his freshman year at Cal, where he was the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year for 2024-25. In 63 career games, the guard has posted 16.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Wilkinson shot 35.7% from 3-point range for the Bulldogs while also averaging 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 31 games (21 starts). He totaled 79 triples along with 49 steals in his sophomore campaign, which ended with a 30-point showing (7-for-15 from deep) in a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Saint Louis.

Players are allowed to enter their names into the portal April 7-21, but several are making their intentions known now.

–Butler guard Finley Bizjack, the Big East’s third-leading scorer at 17.1 points per game, will enter the transfer portal along with testing the NBA draft waters, per On3.

Bizjack was an All-Big East third-team selection after shooting 42.6% overall (34.9% from the arc) and adding 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds per contest. In three seasons at Butler, he averaged 10.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 98 games (61 starts). He also connected on 36.1% of his 3-point tries.

The Bulldogs underwent a coaching change, with ex-Butler star Ronald Nored replacing the retiring Thad Matta.

–German big man Sananda Fru will enter the portal after his freshman year at Louisville, according to multiple reports.

Fru shot an impressive 75.3% from the field (76.5% on 2-pointers) for the Cardinals. The 6-11 forward averaged 9.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in 35 appearances (29 starts). Fru played 22 minutes per game.

–Colorado forwards Sebastian Rancik and Bangot Dak, their third- and fourth-leading scorers, intend to transfer, reports said.

Rancik put up 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 29 games (26 starts), while the 7-foot Dak played in 32 games (30 starts) and averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.

They follow the Buffs’ leading scorer out the door, as freshman guard Isaiah Johnson (16.9 ppg) was reported Friday to be heading to the portal. Colorado projects to be short-handed when it plays in the College Basketball Crown this week.

–Three-year Ohio State forward Devin Royal will test the portal, reports said Sunday.

Royal was a starter for the Buckeyes for the second straight season and averaged 13.7 points per game — identical to his rate last season. In 96 career games (59 starts), he has posted 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. During his junior year, he added a 3-point shot to his repertoire. He canned 31 of 98 from long range over 32 games.

–Jackson State guard Daeshun Ruffin, the fifth-leading scorer in Division I and the SWAC Player of the Year, told The Field of 68 he will enter the portal.

Ruffin put up 23.3 points, 5.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game across 28 starts in his second season for the Tigers. He previously played 25 games across two seasons at Ole Miss (2021-23). The scoring guard has career averages of 17.0 points, 4.3 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals and needs an NCAA waiver to be eligible next year.

–Two-time All-Big Sky selection Money Williams plans to transfer from Montana.

Williams scored 20.6 points per game this season — 22nd in Div. I and tops in the Big Sky — to go with 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. He tallied 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game across 81 games (60 starts) for the Grizzlies.

–Saint Mary’s center Andrew McKeever, who led the West Coast Conference in rebounding, is going portaling with two years of eligibility remaining.

The 7-3, 285-pound McKeever paired 8.2 points with 9.2 rebounds per game

in 33 games (10 starts) for the Gaels. According to KenPom.com, he ranked second nationally in offensive rebounding rate. Longtime Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett left the school for the same position at Arizona State.

–Anthony Robinson II will enter the portal after three years at Missouri.

Robinson made 31 starts in 2024-25 before losing his starting role halfway through this season (33 games, 19 starts). He averaged 8.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals this year, which pushed his career norms to 7.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals through 96 games (50 starts) for the Tigers.

TIGER WOODS PLEADS NOT GUILTY, IS STEPPING AWAY TO SEEK TREATMENT

Tiger Woods released his first public statement since his rollover crash on Friday, announcing he would step away from golf to seek treatment in hopes of “lasting recovery.”

Woods’ statement Tuesday came soon after his attorney entered a plea of not guilty in a Florida court to charges stemming from the accident.

Woods, 50, is charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence with property damage, and refusal to submit to a urinalysis, according to court documents.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods’ statement read. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course,” the PGA Tour said in statement. “But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”

Attorney Douglas Duncan represented Woods, who was not present in Martin County Circuit Court in Stuart, Fla. Duncan submitted the plea as well as the demand for a jury trial.

The 15-time major champion waived his arraignment hearing that was slated for April 23. The defense has 10 days to file motions in the case, to be heard in Florida’s 19th Judicial Circuit.

Woods told police he was looking at his cellphone and changing the radio station before his Land Rover crashed near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla., according to the arrest affidavit released on Tuesday by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Woods said he didn’t see a truck that was hauling a trailer slow down, per the affidavit, and his car clipped the trailer and rolled onto its side.

The golfer was jailed on a charge of suspicion of misdemeanor DUI with property damage following the accident and was released on a $1,000 bond about eight hours later.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said a breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol, but that Woods refused a urinalysis test for other drugs.

Woods was “sweating profusely” and his movements were “lethargic and slow” during an interview with sheriff’s deputy Tatiana Levenar, she wrote in the arrest affidavit.

Another deputy “observed several signs of impairment and requested I conduct a DUI Investigation to ensure Woods was able to operate the motor vehicle in a safe manner at the time of the collision,” Levenar wrote in the affidavit.

During the field sobriety exercises, the deputy wrote that Woods was “limping and stumbling to the right.” Woods told the deputy he had undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 operations on his right leg since a major car accident near Los Angeles in 2021.

Duncan also represented Woods in that case. Woods, arrested on suspicion of DUI, later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and agreed to enter a diversion program.

Woods had said in the 2021 incident that he had taken a bad mix of painkillers. In the Martin County arrest report from last week, Woods denied consuming any alcohol but said he had taken “a few” prescription pills that morning.

Names of the medications were redacted in the affidavit, however, another Martin County Sheriff’s deputy found two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket. Hydrocodone was found in Woods’ system in his 2017 arrest.

Levenar noted in the report that Woods’ eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and his pupils were “extremely dilated.”

“Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed his normal facilities were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle,” Levenar wrote.

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL

GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT BULLS

The Indiana Pacers (17-58) secured their 17th victory of the season and snapped an 11-game home losing streak on Sunday as they defeated the Miami Heat, 135-118. The Blue and Gold look to take that momentum on the road with them as they head to Chicago for a final meeting with the Bulls (29-46) on Wednesday, Apr. 1, 8:00 PM ET.

The Pacers are 3-0 against the Bulls this season, and seek a season sweep with a victory in the United Center. Chicago has dropped four straight games, including a Monday matchup with the Spurs, and returns home to regroup ahead of Wednesday’s clash with the Pacers.

Josh Giddey leads Chicago in all three major stat categories. Giddey averages over 17 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists per game this season. He’s a nightly triple-double threat, and has a unique playmaking ability. Giddey has recorded double-digit assists in 12 of Chicago’s last 14 games, including 19 assists in the Bulls’ loss to Cleveland earlier in March.

Indiana held Giddey to an average of 12 points and six assists across the three previous matchups, and looks to execute as efficiently on Wednesday as the Pacers seek to start a winning streak in Chicago.

Pascal Siakam has notched 20+ points in eight of Indiana’s last 10 games, and remains the Pacers’ leading scorer down the stretch of the season.

Where Siakam scores, Andrew Nembhard quarterbacks the Indiana offense. Nembhard is a capable scorer, but his playmaking streak has been on full display in the latter stretch of March. He’s recorded a double-double in four straight games, including a 14-point, 19-assist game against the Lakers last week.

Both the Pacers and the Bulls have been eliminated from the postseason. Indiana has seven games remaining on its schedule, including Wednesday’s contest in Chicago. The Blue and Gold will finish out a three-game road trip with stops in Charlotte and Cleveland before returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Apr. 7, to host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Projected Starters

Pacers: G – Andrew Nembhard, G – Quenton Jackson, F – Ethan Thompson, F – Jalen Slawson, C – Pascal Siakam

Bulls: G – Tre Jones, G – Josh Giddey, F – Isaac Okoro, F – Matas Buzelis, C – Leonard Miller

Injury Report

Pacers: Jarace Walker – questionable (back), Aaron Nesmith – questionable (back), Johnny Furphy – out (right ACL tear), Tyrese Haliburton – out (right Achilles tendon tear), Ivica Zubac – out (rib fracture)

Bulls: Nick Richards – out (right elbow sprain), Zach Collins – out (right toe surgery), Noa Essengue – out (left shoulder surgery), Anfernee Simons – out (Left Ulnar Styloid fracture), Jalen Smith – out (Right calf)

Last Meeting

Jan. 28, 2026: Indiana stormed back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bulls at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 113-110.

Aaron Nesmith converted the go-ahead layup with just 14 seconds remaining in the game before blocking Coby White’s attempt on the other end to seal the win for the Pacers. Nesmith notched 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists in the matchup.

Pascal Siakam led the way for the Pacers with 20 points, three rebounds, and five assists.

Chicago’s Nikola Vucevic recorded 25 points, and Matas Buzelis contributed 20 points, but the Bulls couldn’t overcome Indiana’s 37-point fourth quarter. The Pacers turned the Bulls over 11 times, but only committed six of their own turnovers, leading to the 113-110 victory.

Noteworthy

The Pacers are 107-107 against the Bulls all-time. Indiana is 35-70 against Chicago as the road team all-time.

Wednesday’s meeting marks the fourth and final meeting between the Pacers and Bulls this season. Indiana leads the season series, 3-0.

Former Pacer Jalen Smith joined the Bulls in 2024 after spending two seasons with Indiana.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

ESMERLYN VALDEZ HOMERS AS INDIANS DROP SERIES OPENER

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Pittsburgh Pirates No. 11 prospect (MLB Pipeline) Esmerlyn Valdez launched his first home run of the 2026 season, but the Indianapolis Indians offense was held to one run as they dropped the series opener 3-1 against the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday night at Huntington Park.

Valdez’s second-inning home run gave the Indians (0-4) a short-lived lead as one of six hits by the team in its first road game of the season. Columbus (3-1) knotted the game on a sacrifice fly by former Indians catcher Dom Nuñez in the bottom half, and a two-run single by Cooper Ingle plated the game-winning run.

Thomas Harrington (L, 0-1) got the start for Indianapolis and surrendered all three Clippers runs in 4.2 innings. Logan Allen dueled him with 5.0 one-run frames and five strikeouts.

Alika Williams continued to rake against Triple-A pitching in his second game of the season, going 2-for-2 with a walk. On the season, he is now 5-for-6 with a pair of RBI.

Konnor Griffin – the top prospect in baseball – has now hit safely in each of his first four Triple-A games with a third-inning double.

The Indians and Clippers continue their six-game series tomorrow at 6:15 PM ET at Huntington Park as the MiLB.TV Free Game of the Day. RHP Wilber Dotel will take the mound for the Indians against RHP Trenton Denholm, both to make their season debuts.

INDY ELEVEN

OPEN CUP RECAP – IND 1:2 OMA

Indianapolis – Indy Eleven midfielder Jack Blake made his first appearance of 2026 and scored a goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Boys in Blue fell 2-1 to Union Omaha in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round action at Carroll Stadium.

Blake entered in the 67th minute with his team playing down a man after goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook was issued a red card in the 59th.

In the 93rd minute, Blake chipped a left-footed ball from outside the area to the corner of the six to Bruno Rendon, but his shot was stopped.  Thirty seconds later, midfielder Josh O’Brien started the scoring sequence with a cross from the right side that was deflected into the edge of the area, where defender Logan Neidlinger volleyed it on goal.  Union Omaha goalkeeper Cole Jensen made the save, but the rebound came out to Blake, who buried it with his left foot.

Indy Eleven resumes USL Championship play on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Carroll Stadium against the defending champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

INDIANA BASEBALL

LATE INNING WOES HURT HOOSIERS

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Once again, late inning troubles hurt the Indiana Baseball team (10-18, 3-9 B1G) in a tight loss to Evansville (8-18, 2-1 MVC) on Tuesday (March 31) evening. The Hoosiers were walked off for a fourth time this season in a 5-4 (F/11) defeat at Charles H. Braun Stadium. On the year, IU is now 0-7 in one-run ballgames.

It looked as though IU may have broken some offensive woes when sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley hit a massive first-inning home run to dead center. His 444-foot blast gave IU an early 2-0 lead. A single from freshman second baseman Landen Fry and an RBI double from freshman pinch hitter Owen ten Oever extended the lead to four in the fourth inning.

But from there, IU’s offense fell completely silent as Evansville worked a mix of pitchers into the game. IU had a golden chance to strike again in the tenth inning but Fry grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and just one out. The Hoosiers left 10 runners on base and finished just 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. They failed to score again after the fourth inning.

IU ran nine pitchers into the game and held Evansville to just five runs across 11 innings. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski started and worked a pair of scoreless innings. As a staff, IU racked up 21 strikeouts, tied for the most in a game (21 – vs. Xavier; Feb. 15, 2025) in the head coach Jeff Mercer era. Junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry (L, 0-4) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing at the end of the game.

The Hoosiers will be back in action as Rutgers comes to town this weekend (April 3-5) for a three-game set at Bart Kaufman Field.

Inside the Box Score

• IU’s offense recorded at least 10 hits for the ninth time this season.

• The pitching staff worked a season-best 21 strikeouts against Evansville.

• Three different players had multi-hit efforts for the Hoosiers.

• IU used 14 position players and nine pitchers to get through the 11 innings.

Notes to Know

• In the defeat to Evansville, IU racked up 21 strikeouts on the mound. That effort matched the most by an IU pitching staff in the Jeff Mercer era. The Hoosiers last worked 21 strikeouts in a 10-inning defeat to Xavier on February 15th, 2025 in Arizona.

• Sophomore first baseman Jake Hanley hit his third career home run in two games at Charles H. Braun Stadium. The two-run home run was the 20th of his young career and the sixth of the campaign. On the season, IU is outscoring opponents 27-15 in the first inning of games.

• Freshman catcher Owen ten Oever has pinch hit in five-consecutive games. In four of those games, he has produced a hit when he comes to the plate. Three of those appearances have resulted in an RBI single, a three-run home run and an RBI double.

• Sophomore outfielder Cole Decker continues to play at a high level. That continued on Tuesday evening in his hometown of Evansville. He had a pair of hits and a pair of walks as he extended his team-best reach based streak to 13-consecutive games. Decker was the only player to walk multiple times in the game.

Up Next

The beginning of April brings a fresh chapter for the IU program. Rutgers makes its way to Bart Kaufman Field for a weekend series (April 3-5). All three games will be streamed on B1G+ and will be carried on the Indiana Sports Radio Network via IUHoosiers.com/Audio.

PURDUE WOMEN’S GOLF

TITLE DEFENDED! PURDUE VICTORIOUS AT COACH MO CLASSIC

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Firing a final round 282 (-6) as a team, the lowest round of the day, Purdue Women’s Golf surged to the top of the leaderboard to win the 2026 Coach Mo Classic at St. John’s Golf and Country Club. The Boilermakers (E) secured a 4-shot victory over No. 16 Florida State, claiming the tournament title for the second straight season.

Throughout program history, the Coach Mo Classic becomes the 17th event that the Boilermakers have won multiple times. The win is Purdue’s sixth tournament victory under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Zack Byrd. Purdue has won a tournament in each season with Byrd guiding the program, the longest stretch of consecutive years of winning at least one tournament since the nine-year run from 2006-14. The Boilermakers won five tournaments over the nine years prior to Byrd’s arrival.

Defeating 15 other teams, including a pair ranked in the Top 25, the Boilermakers claimed their crown by leading the field in par-3 scoring (E), par-4 scoring (+24) and birdies (45). Purdue also played the par 5s 7-under, ranking third in the field, and made the fewest big numbers (double bogeys or worse) with seven.

Sophomore Samantha Brown led the Boilermakers to victory, tying for third on the individual leaderboard at 3-under, just one shot back of co-medalists Sophia Fullbrook (Florida State) and Pimpisa Sisutham (UCF). Collecting the fourth Top 10 of the season, Brown finished a 54-hole tournament under par for the first time in her career with a career-low 213 (75-66-72) that featured a personal-best 66 (-6) in the second round. Brown’s third-place performance was also her best finish as a Boilermaker. She led the field in par-4 scoring (-3) and ranked second in par-4 scoring (-1).

Luana Valero put together the best golf of her young collegiate career. Leading Purdue in the final round with a career-low 69 (-3), the freshman vaulted up the leaderboard and placed eighth at 1-under par. Valero’s three-round total of 215 (74-72-69) was a career low and the first time she finished under par as a Boilermaker. PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL

SMITH NAMED WOODEN AWARD ALL-AMERICAN AND TOP-5 FINALIST

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The final feather in the cap of one of the most-accomplished players in NCAA history, Braden Smith has been named a Wooden Award All-American and Top-5 Finalist, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced tonight.

For the second straight season, Smith was named a finalist and is joined by Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr., Duke’s Cameron Boozer, BYU’s A.J. Dybantsa and Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg. It marks the fourth straight year that Purdue has had a finalist after Zach Edey won the award in both 2023 and 2024, and Smith was a finalist a year ago.

The two-time consensus first-team All-American just capped off one of the greatest careers for a point guard in NCAA history. In addition to being a two-time first-team All-American, Smith was a three-time first-team All-Big Ten honoree, the 2025 Cousy Award winner and 2026 Big Ten Tournament MVP and West Regional All-Tournament team member.

Smith ended the season averaging 14.3 points, 8.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals, shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 82.5 percent from the free throw line. He finished the season with 345 assists, leading the country and ranking fifth all-time on the NCAA single-season assists list, recording the second-most assists in a season in the last 35 years (351 by Kendall Marshall, North Carolina; 2012). Smith became just the second player in NCAA history to have at least 550 points (557), 325 assists (345) and 125 rebounds (138) in a single, joining Murray State standout Ja Morant (2018-19 season) on the list.

Smith became the NCAA’s all-time leader in career assists in the NCAA Tournament first-round victory over Queens, ending his career with 1,103 assists, 27 more than Duke’s Bobby Hurley (1991-94). Smith is the only player in NCAA history to have at least 1,500 points, 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds and he blew away those marks with 1,932 career points, 1,103 career assists and 673 career rebounds. Smith is one of two players in NCAA history to have at least 300 assists in two different seasons (Southern’s Avery Johnson; 1987 and 1988) and is the only player in NCAA history to have three seasons of at least 450 points, 250 assists and 125 rebounds.

In addition to being the NCAA’s all-time leader in career assists, Smith is also the NCAA leader in career minutes played by a four-year player with 5,067 minutes.

On the Purdue career record board, Smith is the all-time leader in minutes played (5,067), games played (149), games started (149) and assists (1,103), while ranking eighth in points (1,932), third in steals (249), 16th in rebounds (673), sixth in 3-pointers made (241), ninth in free throw percentage (.832), 13th in double-doubles (27) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.79).

PURDUE BASEBALL

BIG INNING BURNS BOILERS IN TERRE HAUTE

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Purdue’s Aaron Manias hit a first-inning home run for his 10th  career RBI in just two games at Bob Warn Field, but Indiana State’s seven-run fourth inning proved too much to overcome as the Sycamores took round one of the midweek home and home 12-4 Tuesday.

Indiana State (14-14) scored 10 unanswered runs after Manias’ two-out, two-run blast on an 0-2 count gave the visitors an early lead. The seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth was the third largest of the season against the Boilermakers, all coming in the last seven games.

Purdue (19-9) closed out its stretch of 10 games in 14 days with a 7-3 record and will have to wait until April to reach the 20-win benchmark this year.

The Sycamores improved to 5-1 against Big Ten teams this season, defeating Illinois, Indiana and now Purdue in midweek action over three consecutive weeks.

Five different Boilermakers took the mound in the fourth inning as ISU sent 11 men to the plate. The big hits were a three-run double from 9-hole hitter Caleb Niehaus and a three-run homer from cleanup man Camden Miller. Niehaus and Miller both finished the night with a pair of extra-base hits and five RBI, combining to drive in 10 of the Sycamores’ 12 runs.

Purdue committed an inning-opening error in both the second and fourth innings and Jarvis Evans was unable to pitch over the latter of the two miscues.

Manias powered the Boilermakers to a victory in Terre Haute last year with a career-best 4-for-5, eight-RBI day in which he connected for four extra-base hits. He picked up where he left off with a 400-foot home run to right center and was later walked twice.

Brandon Rogers, Westin Boyle and Avery Moore all connected for doubles Tuesday, but the first inning was the only frame in which Purdue had multiple hits. Boyle delivered an opposite-field RBI double for the second game in a row.

STREAKS EXTENDED

• Brandon Rogers: 21-game on-base; 10-game hit

• Sam Flores: 7-game hit

• Aaron Manias: 7-game on-base

On the mound, Gavin Beuter retired seven of the first eight batters he faced after being the man that finally brought the fourth inning to a close. In his national-leading 19th appearance of the season, Trevor Kester-Johnson won his lefty-lefty matchup with Carter Beck by inducing a foul pop up for the second out of the fourth inning. Beck had singled and doubled in his first two at-bats. Nick Kolze struck out both Miller and Niehaus while accounting for four outs without conceding a hit.

The teams will play again April 21 in West Lafayette.

Purdue is back in action Friday when it opens a three-game set vs. Illinois at Alexander Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. The Boilermakers and Illini have both won each of their last three Big Ten series.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

HIDALGO EARNS WOODEN AWARD ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES

LOS ANGELES — Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo has been named a Wooden Award 2026 Women’s All-American. Hidalgo is one of 10 players to earn the honor.

Hidalgo became the first player in program history to be named to the Wooden Award All-America team three times in her career.

The standout has already been named the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year along with USBWA All-America and USA Today All-America First Teams.

The point guard averaged 25.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.6 steals and 5.2 assists per game. Hidalgo is the only women’s or men’s player at the DI level since the 1999-00 season to average at least 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals per game over an entire season.

Hidalgo set multiple NCAA steals records over the course of the season, including the single-season record with 202 during the 2025-26 campaign. She became the first women’s or men’s player to reach the 200-steal milestone in a season since steals became an official stat in 1988.

The Merchantville, New Jersey, native also set the record for most steals in a single NCAA Tournament with 29 over the course of four games. Hidalgo had back-to-back eight steal performances in wins over Fairfield and Ohio State before setting the program record for steals in an NCAA Tournament game with 10 in the win over Vanderbilt in the Sweet Sixteen. Hidalgo then added three more against UConn in the Elite Eight.

The junior turned in many incredible performances this season while breaking records along the way. Hidalgo set the all-time record for steals in a game and the program’s single-game scoring record against Akron, finishing with 44 points and 16 rebounds.

Arguably even more impressive, Hidalgo recorded just the second 30-point triple double in women’s NCAA Tournament history in the Sweet Sixteen win over Vanderbilt, finishing with 31 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists.

She has the career program scoring records for 30-point games (19), 20-point games (80) and consecutive games in double figures (103).

Hidalgo broke the program’s record for career steals (481) and season steals (202). The standout became the fastest player in ACC and program history to reach 2,000 career points, accomplishing the feat in 86 games.

Hidalgo played her best down the final stretch of the season, scoring 20 or more points in each of her last 11 games of the season, averaging 26.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.0 steals and 5.9 assists per game.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award Program hosts the most prestigious honors in college basketball, recognizing the Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player for men and women, the Wooden Award All-America Teams for men and women, and the annual selection of the Wooden Award Legends of Coaching recipient.

Indiana State (14-14), playing in its fourth game in the last four days, answered an early Purdue (19-9) two-run Aaron Manias home run with Caden Miller’s two-run double in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game up early. After Emil Estrella followed Carter Beck’s triple with an RBI groundout in the third inning to put the Sycamores in the lead, the Indiana State offense found its groove in the fourth.

EVANSVILLE BASEBALL

DEAL WALKS OFF HOOSIERS IN EXTRA-INNINGS THRILLER

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  The University of Evansville baseball team picked up their second walk-off win in the last four games on Tuesday night, as freshman Tate Deal (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) delivered a pinch-hit single in the 11th inning to defeat the Indiana Hoosiers, 5-4, in front of the largest regular season crowd in German American Bank Field history.

Facing a 4-0 deficit after four innings, the Aces scored one run in the fifth before scoring three times on three doubles in the seventh to tie the game at 4. The game remained deadlocked until the 11th, when Deal delivered the game-winning hit.

The Aces’ bullpen was excellent in the win, shutting out the Hoosiers over the final seven innings to allow the offense to mount a comeback. Chris McCormack (Naperville, Ill./Iowa Central CC) picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief, while Jackson Yarberry got the loss for Indiana.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Indiana jumped on top early, using a 2-run home run to take a lead in the first inning.

Parker MacCauley (Paducah, Ky./Tennessee Tech) provided a zero in the top of the second before Conner Vander Luitgaren (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove) provided a scoreless frame in the third. However, Indiana added to their lead in the fourth, using an RBI single and a double to make it 4-0.

Jack Willhite (Georgetown, Ky./Scott County) took over on the mound in the fifth and kept the score at 4-0 before Evansville cut into the deficit in the home half of the inning, with Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) driving in a run with a two-out single.

Willhite put up another scoreless inning in the sixth before giving way to RJ James in the seventh (Toronto, Ontario/Sir John A MacDonald), who struck out two while putting up a zero.

Evansville mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a leadoff HBP by Magill. Following a fielder’s choice, Reid Haire (Hudson, N.C./Charlotte) drilled a ground rule double to left center field to put runners on second and third. In the next at-bat, Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) delivered a ground rule double of his own to left center, driving in both runners to make it 4-3. After a strikeout, Ryan Seddon (Joliet, Ill./St. Laurence) provided an at-bat for the ages, fouling off seven pitches before lofting a double to shallow right center on the 12th pitch of the at-bat to drive in McConnell.

With the game now tied at four, Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) emerged from the bullpen and struck out two, including a 97 MPH fastball on the outside corner to end the inning. Roberts was excellent again in the ninth, stranding a runner at second to keep the game tied.

Looking to walk it off, the Aces put two men on in the ninth, but were unable to score as the game went to extra innings.

Indiana looked like they might break through in the 10th, loading the bases with one out. However, McCormack induced a soft line drive up the middle, where Simon Schulz (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) scooped the ball up on a hop, stepped on second base, and fired to first to beat the Hoosier baserunner by a step and complete the double play.

In the 11th, McCormack posted another zero, striking out two, to give the Aces another chance to walk it off.

With the top of the order up for the Aces, Magill began the inning with an HBP before Haire drilled a single up the middle to put two on with one out. After a fielder’s choice advanced Magill to third, Deal stepped up to the plate to pinch hit. In only his seventh plate appearance of the season, Deal ripped a ground ball up the middle and into center field to drive in Magill and win it for the Aces.

Evansville hits the road this week to take on Bradley in Peoria for a three-game set.

VALPO BASEBALL

VALPO LIFTS THREE HOME RUNS IN MIDWEEK DEFEAT AT NORTHWESTERN

Three members of the Valparaiso University baseball team left the yard with home runs on Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston, Ill., but the host Wildcats prevailed 13-9 as the two teams dodged the storms enough to play the game to its completion despite temperatures starting warm pregame and declining throughout the contest. This continued a busy stretch of baseball with Valpo playing six games in a seven-day span.

How It Happened

After making SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays on Monday evening, junior Brayden Pleau (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly) had another nifty catch in the first, right after Javin Gauthier (De Pere, Wis. / De Pere) made a nice play to track down a pop fly to shallow right. However, Northwestern took an early lead on a two-out, solo shot by Ryan Kucherak.

Valpo used both power and small ball in the top of the second. The Beacons got even as Pleau laid down a squeeze bunt to score George Betevis (Hanover Park, Ill. / Bartlett) from third. Next, a rocket off the bat of Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) sailed over the left-field wall to put the Brown & Gold ahead 4-1. The distance was measured at 356 feet.

Northwestern got a run back in the bottom of the third, as Jackson Freeman hit the team’s second solo homer of the day to make it 4-2.

The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double and run-scoring bouncer to get even.

Redshirt junior Thomas Cooper (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) crushed one 423 feet to right center in the top of the fifth, putting the Beacons back ahead at 5-4.

Northwestern scored four in the bottom of the fifth including a go-ahead, three-run homer. The Wildcats added single tallies in the sixth and seventh to extend the lead to 10-5.

Pleau poked a double to right in the top of the eighth, moving the Beacons a step closer at 10-6. NU responded with three in the bottom of the eighth to make it 13-6.

Betevis ripped a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to get Valpo within four, which stood as the final deficit. That one sailed 385 feet.

Inside the Game

Sullivan’s home run was his first of the season after he hit seven last season, his first year in a Valpo uniform.

Cooper’s dinger was his fifth of the season, all in the last 10 games after he had none in the first 12. He has exceeded last season’s home run total and moved his career number to nine.

Betevis homered for the second time in the last three games, lifting his season home run total to three and his career total to 26.

Pleau, Cooper and Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) had two hits apiece. Bennett has reached safely in 13 consecutive contests.

The Beacons tied a season high with three home runs, matching March 22 at Murray State.

Up Next

The Beacons (7-17) will fly to Seattle for a three-game, weekend series at Washington that begins at 9 p.m. CT on Thursday night. The game will air on B1G+.

“SPORTS EXTRA”

=========================================================

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1914    Rube Waddell, a southpaw who once struck out a record 349 batters in one season, dies of tuberculosis at 37. The eccentric Hall of Famer compiled a 193-143 (.574) record and a 2.16 ERA during his 13 seasons with the Colonels, A’s, Pirates, and Browns.

1937    The Reds sell Babe Herman to the Tigers. The 34-year-old outfielder, batting .300 for his new team, will appear in only 17 contests with Detroit before retiring from the game, although he will return to play briefly for the wartime Dodgers in 1945.

1938    Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who is not a fan of Branch Rickey’s farm system, grants free agency to nine Cardinal minor leaguers, including a talented prospect named Pete Reiser. A reported gentlemen’s agreement has Brooklyn signing and hiding the 19-year-old outfielder in the minors for a trade back to St. Louis, but backfires when Leo Durocher disobeys orders, allowing the phenom to display his incredible ability in spring training exhibition games.

1950    At Gilmore Field, the Pacific Coast League Hollywood Stars unveil their new look, wearing shorts and rayon shirts on Opening Day. The team plans to wear the new track-suit-style uniforms during day games and warm-night contests. The White Sox will also don shorts in the first game of a doubleheader against Kansas City in 1976.

1962    The White Sox sign 21-year-old Dave DeBusschere, a hoop star at the University of Detroit. The 6-6, 225lb right-hander will compile a 3-4 record in 36 appearances with Chicago before moving to the National Basketball Association, becoming one of the fifty greatest players named in the league’s history.

1963    Former Brooklyn Dodger Duke Snider returns to New York when the Mets purchase him from LA for $40,000. At the end of the season, Buzzi Bavasi will tell the 36-year-old outfielder, who will represent New York in the All-Star Game, that the Yankees had asked for him to back up Mickey Mantle before being dealt to the team across the river.

1964    During spring training in Tucson (AZ), Cleveland’s manager, Birdie Tebbetts, suffers a heart attack. George Strickland will fill in for three months until the 51-year-old skipper returns to the Indians dugout with limited duties, resigning from the team two seasons later on August 19, again replaced by his third base coach.

1968    The Braves purchase Orioles right-handed reliever Stu Miller, best remembered for committing a balk in the 1961 All-Star Game when a gust of wind pushed him off the mound at Candlestick Park. The 40-year-old Northampton (MA) native will throw only 1.2 innings in two appearances for Atlanta before retiring from baseball, having compiled a 105-103 record and 153 saves during his 16-year major league tenure with five teams, including the Cardinals, Giants, and Phillies.

1969    The Seattle Pilots will trade Lou Piniella, after acquiring him from the Indians in the expansion draft, to the Royals in exchange for Steve Whitaker and John Gelnar. The 25-year-old outfielder will have a stellar season in Kansas City, copping the league’s Rookie of the Year Award.

1970    After ruling the Seattle Pilots insolvent, Federal Bankruptcy Referee Sidney Volinn orders the team to sell the club to a group headed by Midwestern businessman Bud Selig. The American League expansion team’s tenure in the Northwest is over after just one season, when the club is hastily moved to Milwaukee to start the new season as the Brewers.

1976    After being released by the Padres, Bobby Tolan (.255, 5, 48) signs as a free agent with the Phillies. In June, the outfielder-first baseman, who plays only 15 games for Philadelphia, will ink a deal with the Pirates.

1982    The Mets send fan-favorite Lee Mazzilli to Texas for rookie starters Ron Darling and Walt Terrell. The deal, not well-received at the time, turns out to be a steal for New York when the two right-handers combine for 118 victories during their tenure with the team, with their departed outfielder playing a total of 58 games with Texas before being traded to the Yankees for Bucky Dent.

1987    The Pirates trade Tony Pena, a three-time Gold Glove catcher, to the Cardinals in exchange for three youngsters, Mike LaValliere, Mike Dunne, and Andy Van Slyke, who thinks the deal is an April Fool’s Day joke. The former Pittsburgh backstop cries at a news conference with Bucs’ skipper Jim Leyland present when the team announces the swap with the Redbirds.

1987    Mets phenom pitcher Dwight Gooden avoids suspension for substance abuse by agreeing to enter a drug rehab facility. The talented 22-year-old right-hander will make his first start on June 5, winning 15 games for the team despite missing the season’s first two months.

1989    Bart Giamatti, the former Yale University and National League president, becomes the seventh commissioner of Major League Baseball. Baseball’s new leader, a lifelong Red Sox fan, is the author of The Green Fields of the Mind, an essay that laments the end of a season in Boston.

1996    Nationalpastime.com appears for the first time on the internet. The popular website, the first to feature baseball history online daily, has over 13,000 entries that are easily searchable.

1996    The postponement of Cincinnati’s Opening Day game becomes necessary after home plate ump John McSherry, working his 26th season in the major leagues, suffers a fatal heart attack after calling the first seven pitches of the contest. The respected but noticeably overweight veteran arbitrator’s death prompts Major League Baseball to compel its umpires to be more physically fit.

1996    Only 7,296 fans show up at Cashman Field to watch the A’s lose their season opener to the Blue Jays, 9-6. Due to renovations at the Oakland Coliseum, the first six home games will be played in Las Vegas, marking the first time since the White Sox played 11 home contests in Milwaukee’s County Stadium in 1969 that major leaguers will play a regular-season game at a neutral site.

1996    The Mets overcome a 6-0 deficit, beating the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, 7-6, in the century’s biggest Opening Day comeback. The decisive run scores due to an unusual 9-3-6-3-6 double play when Bernard Gilkey, the baserunner on first, is doubled up on Rico Brogna’s short sac fly to right field (RF-1B-SS-1B-SS), allowing Lance Johnson to cross home plate on the play.

1997    Setting a record for the most runs scored in one inning of an Opening Day contest this century, the Padres score 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 12-5 rout of the Mets. Chris Gomez, Rickey Henderson, and Quilvio Veras lead the attack with back-to-back-to-back home runs.

1998    At Camden Yards, the Orioles rock the Royals, 10-1, as Scott Erickson records his 100th major league victory. O’s skipper Ray Miller, who hadn’t won a game since managing the Twins in 1986, enjoys his first win with Baltimore.

2001    In the major league season opener, the Blue Jays beat the Rangers, 8-1, in the first major league game ever played in Puerto Rico. In his debut with Texas, $252 million shortstop Alex Rodriguez collects the season’s first hit and first run, but he makes a throwing error on his first chance in the field.

2002    Cinci Freedom, who evaded capture for ten days after jumping a six-foot fence to avoid slaughter, is excused from her scheduled appearance in the Reds’ traditional Opening Day parade. Before the Reds’ 5-4 walk-off victory over the Cubs at Cinergy Field, the 1,050-pound Charolais cow was deemed too jumpy to participate in the Findlay Market activities after receiving a key to the city.

2002    With a 6-2 victory over the Pirates at Shea Stadium, the Mets improve their mark for Opening Day victories to 26-15 (.634), a major league record. The New York expansion team didn’t win on Opening Day until the franchise’s ninth year.

2005    Appearing in the 21 games, Cardinal slugger Albert Pujols does not strike out during spring training. In his 68 plate appearances, the St. Louis first baseman finishes the exhibition season with a .458 batting average, six homers, and 20 RBI.

2006    The White Sox, a day before the start of the season, sign Jose Contreras (15-7, 3.61) to a $29 million, three-year contract extension. The 34-year-old Cuban native was the World Champs’ most effective pitcher during the team’s stretch run to the AL pennant, posting an 11-2 mark following the All-Star Game.

2008    Robert Andino’s first career round-tripper is memorable as his two-out, tenth-inning walk-off homer to deep left off Matt Wise gives the Marlins a 5-4 victory over the Mets at Dolphin Stadium. The post-game celebration is short-lived when the Miami native takes off for home, only to meet the police after receiving a text from his wife saying their house may have an intruder.

2008    On Opening Day in Los Angeles, Juan Pierre’s 434 consecutive game streak, the longest current in the major leagues, ends when the Dodger outfielder does not play in the 3-2 victory over the Giants. New skipper Joe Torre plays Andre Ethier in left field instead of the highly paid, light-hitting fly chaser.

2009    After tallying a run in the top of the first, Kentucky State finds itself on the short end of a 22-1 score. The Eastern Kentucky University Colonels score 27 more times in the next three frames, prompting the decision to halt the contest in the middle of the fifth, giving EKU a 49-1 triumph over the Thorobreds.

2011    Doug Glanville becomes a baseball color analyst for ESPN, where he will contribute to Baseball Tonight, ESPN.com, and ESPN -The Magazine. The former major league outfielder, best known for playing with the Phillies, is also a guest columnist for the New York Times, where he writes about sports culture.

2013    Bryce Harper, providing all of the offense the Nationals will need, becomes the youngest player to homer twice on Opening Day. The 20-year-old outfielder, playing in his first Opening Day as a major leaguer, hits solo shots in the first and fourth frames in Washington’s 2-0 victory over Miami.

2013    On Opening Day, Jackie Bradley Jr. makes a memorable major league debut, walking three times, scoring twice, and robbing Robinson Cano of an extra-base hit with an outstanding defensive play in the Red Sox’s 8-2 victory over New York at Yankee Stadium. The 22-year-old Boston rookie outfielder, called JBJ by his teammates, also makes uniform history, becoming the first major leaguer to wear “Jr.” on the back of his jersey.

2013    Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino, who will end the day with an 0-1 record when he gives up a walk-off sac fly in an Opening Day loss to Milwaukee, becomes the first big league pitcher to wear the number 0, joining position players, Oddibe McDowell (1985-88), Junior Ortiz (1989-2004), and Al Oliver (1978-85). Several players, including hurlers Bobo Newsome (1943), Curtis Leskanic (2000-01), Rick White (2005-06), and Brian Wilson (2003-14), have donned a double-zero.

2013    Clayton Kershaw, the Dodgers’ Opening Day pitcher, hits a leadoff home run off San Francisco’s George Kontos in the bottom of the eighth inning to break up a scoreless tie in the team’s eventual 4-0 victory. LA’s 25-year-old southpaw retires the side in the next frame, completing a 4-0 complete-game shutout against the Giants at Chavez Ravine.

2014    During a pre-game ceremony on Opening Day at Citi Field, the Mets honor long-time announcer Ralph Kiner, who, along with Bob Murphy and Ralph Kiner, made up the original broadcast team for the expansion Mets in 1962. The team unveils a commemorative disc beyond the left-field wall honoring his 62-year tenure with the team, best remembered for his wit, deep knowledge of the game, and occasional malapropisms.

2015    Auction items featured in Sotheby’s “New York Sale” include the 1967 Mets’ bullpen cart shaped like a baseball wearing a cap. The electric-powered vehicle, valued between $20,000 and $30,000, fetches a surprisingly high bid of $125,000.

2018    Shohei Ohtani, in his much-anticipated pitching debut, strikes out six batters in six innings while allowing three runs, and picks up his first big league victory when the Angels beat the A’s at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, 7-4. The 23-year-old Japanese sensation, also touted for his hitting prowess, has not had a plate appearance in the American League contest.

2021    Nationalpastime.com celebrates the 25th Anniversary of its debut on the internet. The popular almanac-styled baseball history website, the first to display facts for every day of the year, features 12,000 easily searchable entries, many enhanced with videos, photos, text, and quotations.

2021    The Diamondbacks score six times in the fifth inning when Ketel Marte, Asdrúbal Cabrera, Tim Locastro, and Stephen Vogt all go deep, marking the first time a team hits four home runs in one inning on Opening Day. Arizona’s historic offensive output falls short when the team drops an 8-7 decision to the Padres at Petco Park.

2021    In the longest nine-inning game in franchise history, the Royals set a club record for runs scored on Opening Day, beating the Rangers at Kauffman Stadium, 14-10.
