LIONS TRADE MONTGOMERY TO TEXANS FOR SCRUGGS, 4TH, 7TH-ROUND PICKS, AP SOURCE SAYS

The Detroit Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs along with fourth and seventh-round picks, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.

Detroit dealt a veteran running back who wanted more carries for much-needed depth on the offensive line and extra selections in next month’s NFL draft.

Montgomery should have a chance to start for the Texans.

He was a backup with little chance to play ahead of Jahymr Gibbs, a Pro Bowl player in each of his first three NFL seasons.

Montgomery finished with career lows in rushing attempts (158) and yards rushing (716). He still scored eight touchdowns and his 4.5 yards per carry trailed only his career-best 4.6 yards per attempt in 2023 when he had 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground during his debut season in Detroit.

The 28-year-old Montgomery has 6,115 yards rushing and 59 touchdowns along with 1,890 yards receiving and four scores over four seasons with the Chicago Bears and three with the Lions.

Without him on the roster, Detroit will likely look to add a backup running back in free agency this month or the draft in April.

Houston selected Scruggs in the second round in 2023. He might start at center or guard in Detroit, where revamping a once-powerful offensive line is a top priority this offseason after the weakness of the unit led to the team missing the playoffs.

REPORT: COMMANDERS EXPECTED TO RELEASE CB MARSHON LATTIMORE

The Commanders are set to release cornerback Marshon Lattimore after 1 1/2 seasons with the team, according to a CBS Sports report.

Lattimore, a four-time Pro Bowler and the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2017, is entering the final year of a five-year, $97.6 million extension he signed with New Orleans in 2021. He turns 30 in May.

He was set to make $18.5 million in 2026 but none of it was guaranteed, meaning Washington would have no dead money with his release.

A former first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2017 draft, Lattimore was traded from the Saints to the Commanders in November of 2024. He played 11 games in Washington, two in 2024 after the trade and nine last season before sustaining a torn ACL.

He was arrested in Ohio in January on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

Over eight seasons, Lattimore has started all 95 regular-season games he’s played in, recording 16 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), 98 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and 436 tackles.

FALCONS TO REVEAL NEW UNIFORMS ON APRIL 2

The Atlanta Falcons will reveal their new uniforms on April 2, the team announced Monday.

In a 45-second video posted to their social media channels, multiple players are shown positively reacting to the new uniforms without actually showing any glimpses of the new threads.

Multiple reports have said the Falcons are going to switch to red jerseys as their primary home uniform.

Atlanta introduced its current uniforms with an “ATL” abbreviation above the numbers in 2020. Red helmets – which replicate those worn in 2009-12 – were brought back as an alternate to the regular black helmets in 2022.

COMBINE BUZZ CENTERED ON PLAYERS WHO COULD BE ON THE MOVE AND LIKELY NO. 1 PICK FERNANDO MENDOZA

While college players take center stage at the NFL scouting combine, teams are busy preparing their next moves along with evaluating potential draft picks.

Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is the consensus choice for the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 1 overall and it’s uncertain whether another quarterback will be selected in the first round.

But there was plenty of speculation about QBs changing teams during a jam-packed week in Indianapolis.

Kirk Cousins already was informed by the Atlanta Falcons that he’ll be released when the new league year opens on March 11. The Miami Dolphins may part with Tua Tagovailoa and could have to absorb a $99.2 million cap hit in dead money that could be spread across two seasons with a post-June 1 release.

Kyler Murray could be looking for a new team after seven seasons in Arizona. The Cardinals owe him $36.8 million in fully guaranteed salary this year. Another $19.5 million would be guaranteed in 2027 if he’s on the roster on the third day of the league year.

Three-time Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Brown is a candidate for a trade, even though the Philadelphia Eagles won a Super Bowl with him and would prefer to keep him.

The Raiders are willing to listen to offers for five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby, though general manager John Spytek said they want him back.

Mike Evans, a six-time Pro Bowl wideout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, plans to test free agency and there’s a possibility he may get an offer he can’t refuse.

QB class

Mendoza, who led Indiana to its first national championship, didn’t work out at the combine. He spoke to reporters and made the interview rounds.

The next quarterback selected after Mendoza may have to wait a while. Alabama’s Ty Simpson had an impressive day at the combine. He’s a one-year starter who needs more experience but his potential makes him a potential first-round pick.

LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier and Miami’s Carson Beck raised their stock at the combine. Arkansas’ Taylen Green showed off his athleticism and ran a 4.36 40-yard dash.

Clemson’s Cade Klubnik and Penn State’s Drew Allar had strong throwing performances.

Edge rushers

It’s a deep group with several first-round candidates. This is a premium position for NFL teams, who place high value on guys who can pressure quarterbacks. The past two Super Bowls saw dominant defensive performances, only increasing the need for elite talent along the front four.

Texas Tech’s David Bailey, Ohio State’s Arvell Reese and Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. should be top-10 picks. Auburn’s Keldric Faulk, Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell and Miami’s Akheem Mesidor are among the guys who can be picked in the first round.

Wide receivers

There’s a lot of depth at a position where teams are always looking for playmakers.

Ohio State’s Carnell Tate leads the pack and should go in the top 10. USC’s Makai Lemon, Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson, Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr., Washington’s Denzel Boston and Texas A&M’s KC Concepcion are among the first-round talent.

Notre Dame’s Malachi Fields, Tennessee, Chris Brazzell II and Georgia’s Zachariah Branch will draw plenty of attention. This receiver class is so deep there could be undrafted players who make an impact.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

DUKE REMAINS AP NO. 1; MICHIGAN STATE, TEXAS TECH LEAP INTO TOP 10

Duke remains No. 1 for the second straight week in the Associated Press men’s top 25 poll, extending its all-time record to 149 weeks as the top-ranked team.

The Blue Devils (27-2) have won six straight games, with a ranked win each of the last three weeks. After stomping Notre Dame 100-56 on Tuesday, Duke handily defeated then-No. 11 Virginia 77-51 on Saturday to claim at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

There was continuity at the top of the Top 25, with Arizona (27-2) and Michigan (27-2) holding firm at No. 2 and No. 3 slots in this week’s update.

But the remainder of the top 10 saw changes. UConn (27-3) and Florida (23-6) each jumped two spots to No. 4 and No. 5 after each clinched at least a share of their respective conference titles over the weekend.

Big 12 rivals Iowa State (24-5) and Houston (24-5) were the corresponding moves, each falling two spots to No. 6 and No. 7 after taking losses last week.

Nebraska (25-4) moved up three spots to No. 9, and Texas Tech (22-7) leapt six spots up to No. 10 after a road win at Iowa State Saturday.

Purdue (22-7) took the largest fall after an 0-2 week, falling seven spots to No. 15.

Saint Mary’s (27-4) is making its season debut in the poll at No. 21 after its home upset of Gonzaga Saturday, and Miami (Fla.) (23-6) is ranked for the first time since 2023 at No. 22.

SENIORS STEER NO. 2 ARIZONA TO COMFORTABLE WIN OVER NO. 6 IOWA STATE

No. 2 Arizona clinched its first outright Big 12 regular-season title behind senior point guard Jaden Bradley’s 17 points on Senior Night in a 73-57 win over No. 6 Iowa State on Monday at Tucson, Ariz.

The Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Big 12) earned their fifth straight win, four of them against ranked opponents.

Iowa State (24-6, 11-6) has lost three of its last four games, all defeats against ranked foes.

Tobe Awaka, another Arizona senior, finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Motiejus Krivas added 13 points and Brayden Burries finished with 11.

Tamin Lipsey led Iowa State with 17 points, and Joshua Jefferson had 12 points and eight rebounds. Both played through foul trouble, each finishing with four fouls.

Jamarion Batemon had 14 points for the Cyclones.

Iowa State’s Milan Momcilovic, averaging 17.4 points a game while shooting 50.9% from 3-point range entering the game, was held to five points on 2-of-8 shooting, including 1-of-5 success from beyond the arc.

Iowa State shot a season-low 29.2% (19 of 65) from the field, 23.3% (7 of 30) from 3-point range.

After a 3-pointer by Batemon with 4:02 left in the first half tied the game 22-22, Arizona outscored Iowa State 15-3 the rest of the half in a key stretch.

Lipsey was whistled for his second foul with 3:11 remaining and Jefferson his third with 2:33 left.

Both subsequently exited, and Arizona took advantage of that by holding Iowa State to 1-of-6 shooting from the field for the rest of the half.

The Wildcats made four of their five attempts in that span.

Krivas had six points, including a 4-of-4 performance at the free-throw line, in the 15-3 run that gave Arizona a 37-25 lead at the half.

Bradley had 12 first-half points, having converted all eight of his tries from the free-throw line.

Arizona built its lead to 43-27 with 16:20 left on a Bradley jumper, but Iowa State responded with a 10-1 run.

Lipsey’s layup with 13:19 left capped the surge and cut the lead to 44-37.

Jefferson was whistled for his fourth foul with 12:58 remaining. He re-entered with 11:41 left.

Arizona scored seven unanswered points, five by Krivas, to take a 51-37 lead with 10:17 remaining. Iowa State never again got within single digits.

The Wildcats went on a 10-3 run to open a 66-48 lead with 4:28 to go.

NO. 1 DUKE TAKES OUTRIGHT ACC CROWN BY BLASTING NC STATE

Cameron Boozer scored 26 points and No. 1 Duke won its final road game of the season by drilling North Carolina State 93-64 to claim the outright Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship Monday night at Raleigh, N.C.

Duke (28-2, 16-1 ACC) had wrapped up the top seed for the ACC tournament with Saturday’s romp past then-No. 11 Virginia and now the Blue Devils have added to that.

Dame Sarr poured in 16 points to go with eight rebounds, Isaiah Evans notched 12 points and Patrick Ngongba II provided 11 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 32 for 58 (55.2%) from the field. Boozer, who made eight of 10 shots from the field, also pulled in nine rebounds.

Darrion Williams provided 17 points and Quadir Copeland had 11 points for NC State (19-11, 10-7), which has lost three games in a row and five of its last six. The Wolfpack were considered a team safely in place for an NCAA Tournament bid just a couple of weeks ago, but that status is sliding in the wrong direction.

The Blue Devils were efficient enough in the first half to prevent the home crowd from roaring consistently as NC State was seeking its second late-season triumph against a nationally ranked neighboring school after toppling North Carolina last month

For Duke, it was an ideal tune-up for Saturday night’s rematch with rival North Carolina, which handed the Blue Devils their only ACC defeat.

Duke was so crisp that it collected 21 assists on 32 baskets, though it was a pedestrian 18 for 27 on free throws. Caleb Foster provided seven assists. The Blue Devils were charged with seven turnovers.

NC State shot 35.4% from the floor.

The Blue Devils finished with 11 baskets from 3-point range, while the Wolfpack went 7 for 29 from beyond the arc. Williams was 3 for 11 on 3s.

Duke built a 47-30 halftime lead. The margin grew to 62-36 in the first five minutes of the second half.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

RUTGERS FIRES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH COQUESE WASHINGTON AFTER SEASON ENDS WITH 11 STRAIGHT LOSSES

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers fired women’s basketball coach Coquese Washington on Monday after the Scarlet Knights ended the season with 11 straight losses and failed to win 10 games for the second time in three years.

Washington was 42-84 overall and 11-61 in Big Ten play over four seasons. The Knights were 9-20 this season, and their 1-17 Big Ten record was the worst in program history in conference play.

“Rutgers women’s basketball has a proud and storied history of success and there is no reason why our program cannot return to its place among the nation’s elite,” athletic director Keli Zinn said. “We have invested in women’s basketball in many ways, we compete in the best athletic conference in the country, and we are supported by passionate fans and loyal donors. I am confident we will find the right coach who can elevate this program to where it belongs. I want to thank Coquese for her service to Rutgers and wish her the best.”

A national search for a new women’s basketball head coach will begin immediately, Zinn said.

Washington succeeded C. Vivian Stringer, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member who retired in 2022. Stringer coached 27 years at Rutgers, won 535 games and led the Knights to 17 NCAA Tournaments, including 10 in a row from 2003-12. The Knights reached the Final Four in 2000 and the national championship game in 2007. Rutgers’ last NCAA appearance was in 2021.

Washington had been Penn State’s coach from 2007-19 and was associate head coach at Oklahoma for one year and at Notre Dame for two before taking over at Rutgers.

Penn State won three straight Big Ten regular-season titles from 2012-14 and made the Sweet 16 in 2012 and 2014.

Rutgers struggled all four seasons under Washington. The Knights won only one game against a power-conference team this season and finished with a 93-52 loss at Nebraska on Saturday.

WNBA

WNBA’S NEW CBA OFFER BOOSTS PAY, FAST-TRACKS MAX DEALS FOR STARS LIKE CAITLIN CLARK, AP SOURCE SAYS

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA sent a new CBA proposal to the players’ union Sunday night that includes allowing some of its young stars like Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers a chance to earn a maximum salary quicker, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity on Monday because of the sensitive nature of negotiations.

The new offer, which came two days after the latest proposal from the union, would allow players on rookie contracts who were first or second team all-league to become eligible to sign a maximum contract in their fourth year and would not be eligible for a franchise tag designation following that extension.

For example, Clark would be eligible for a maximum contract in 2027, Bueckers in 2028. Aliyah Boston would be eligible this year.

The salary cap in the first year would be $5.75 million — up 280% from last year’s $1.5 million. That would grow to $8.5 million by the sixth year of the deal. The deal would result in maximum salaries increasing by more than $1 million — from $249,000 to $1.3 million — and average salaries increasing from $120,000 to $540,000 in the first year.

The league didn’t make changes in its revenue sharing model from its previous offer. The WNBA has proposed giving players more than 70% of net revenue with that number going up as the league continues to grow. The union in its offer earlier this week asked for an average of 26% of the gross revenue — revenue before expenses — over the course of the CBA. That would include only 25% in the first year of the new deal. The league has said that number is unrealistic.

Kelsey Plum, who is a vice president of the union, said Monday while preparing for the Unrivaled semifinals that getting the league to agree to a revenue sharing system for the first time is something “we fought really hard for,” and a “significant win”. The WNBPA can continue to negotiate the expense credits the league would get.

“I’ve always been someone that’s focused on the gain, not the gap.” Plum said. “And to be honest, I think if you look at where we’ve come from, shoot, since I came into the league until now, and now that we’re in a revenue share, it’s a tremendous win.

“Obviously, we’re going to continue to negotiate. I can’t emphasize that enough. Like we’re not just settling. I want to be very clear about that. But I’m super proud to be a part of this opportunity to change women’s sports.”

Breanna Stewart, who was the first to say that the league had sent a new offer, agreed with Plum.

“I think that while we still are fighting for a lot of different things, we have to realize that the rev share is a win, especially just even coming from the 2020 CBA and the ones before that,” said Stewart, who is also a vice president of the union. “I don’t think a strike is good for anyone, because as the league loses money, or if we have a delay, we also lose money. That’s not just me as a player. That’s me thinking as, like an overall business person. Nobody wants to lose money, so how can we try to prevent that in all ways possible?”

For the first time, the league is giving $8 million from revenue sharing to the players from last season as the league generated enough to trigger it for the first time in its history. There’s also $8 million going to player marketing from the money made last season.

The two sides still differ on housing. The league had offered that its teams would pay for all housing this season. Then franchises would pay for housing for players on minimum salary contracts as well as rookies in their first season, the person said. They’d also pay for the housing of the two developmental players that teams would be allowed to have.

The union in its last offer asked teams to provide housing for all players in the first few years of the deal, but in the latter part of the CBA teams wouldn’t have to provide housing for players making at least 75% of the maximum salary.

The WNBA had told the players’ union that it needs to get a deal in place by March 10 to start the season on time at a virtual collective bargaining agreement negotiating session a week ago, a different person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press.

That person also spoke spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of negotiations.

If a labor deal is agreed to by March 10, it probably would be signed by the end of the month. Under that timeline, the expansion draft for new franchises in Portland and Toronto would be held sometime between April 1 and 6, according to a timetable obtained by the AP.

Free agent qualifying offers, including franchise player tags, would be sent out April 7 and 8. Teams would then have three days to negotiate with the more than 80% of players who are free agents. The signing period would take place from April 12-18.

Training camps would open the next day and the season would be able to start on May 8.

“I think both sides are in agreement that we want to have a season, we don’t want to have a strike necessarily,” Bueckers said at Unrivaled shootaround. “There are certain things we want to stand firm on. … We need to continue to have these conversations. We need to have change implemented to move on our stance.”

Brandin Podziemski paced Golden State with 22 points, 20 of them in the first half. The Warriors, who have lost five of their past seven, were without Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler III, Kristaps Porzingis, Gary Payton II and Will Richard.

Valdez pitched three scoreless innings, fanning three and allowing just a pair of hits. He threw 30 of 43 pitches for strikes and struck out three in the second inning. Valdez signed a three-year, $115 million contract with Detroit last month after spending eight seasons in Houston and is lined up to start the Tigers’ home opener April 3.

Brady House, who had two hits in three trips, added an RBI double to left field an inning later. Andrew Alvarez, who started five games for the Nats in September 2025, pitched three scoreless middle innings, walking three and fanning three.

MLB ADAPTING SPRING BREAKOUT INTO DUAL-TOURNAMENT EVENT IN 2027

MLB is adapting its annual Spring Breakout event into a pair of tournaments starting in 2027.

The event, which began in 2024 as a set of games during spring training to highlight each team’s farm system, will now see both the Grapefruit League in Florida and Cactus League in Arizona hold single-elimination tournaments to determine a pair of champions.

According to MLB.com, 210 players who participated in the first two years of Spring Breakout have gone on to play in the major leagues. That includes three of the four Rookies of the Year over the last two years in Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz and Braves catcher Drake Baldwin.

This year’s Spring Breakout will take place as a series of isolated games from March 19-22, after the conclusion of the World Baseball Classic (March 5-17).

THE A’S AND GIANTS HAVE THE BEST ROBOT-UMP CHALLENGE RATES IN THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF SPRING

NEW YORK (AP) — The Athletics had the highest success rate using the robot-umpire system to overturn ball/strike calls during the first 10 days of spring training, winning 69.2% of challenges as teams prepared for its regular-season debut March 25.

San Francisco was second at 66.7%, followed by Cincinnati, Miami and San Diego at 61.9% each, Major League Baseball said Monday.

The World Series champion Dodgers had the lowest rate, winning 21.4% of appeals to the Automated Ball-Strike System. Baltimore was at 25%, the New York Mets at 35.3% and Texas at 38.1%.

MLB’s overall success rate was 51.3%, with an average of 2.3 challenges per game.

The New York Yankees averaged the most challenges at 3.8 per game, winning 52.6%. Minnesota was second at 3.6 (winning 58.3%), followed by Boston at 3.2 (55.2%) and Colorado (55.6%) and San Francisco at 3.0.

Baltimore averaged the fewest challenges at 1.2. The Dodgers were at 1.4 and Detroit was at 1.5 (46.7%).

MLB experimented with ABS during spring training last year and teams won 52.2% of their ball/strike challenges (617 of 1,182). MLB began testing in the minor leagues in 2019.

Each team has the ability to challenge two calls per game. A team retains its challenge if successful, similar to the regulations for big league teams with video reviews, which were first used for home run calls in August 2008 and widely expanded to many calls for the 2014 season.

A team out of challenges for a game tied after nine innings would get one additional challenge in each extra inning.

NHL ROUNDUP: STARS TOP CANUCKS FOR TEAM-RECORD 9TH STRAIGHT WIN

GOLF NEWS

JON RAHM: DP WORLD TOUR ‘EXTORTING PLAYERS’ WITH 6-EVENT REQUIREMENT

Jon Rahm issued a fiery explanation on Tuesday as to why he wasn’t among the eight LIV Golf players who signed waivers to compete on the DP World Tour.

Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig and Elvis Smylie all agreed to the terms set out by the DP World Tour (DPWT), formerly known as the European Tour. The players had to agree to pay any pending fines, compete in a prescribed minimum of DPWT tournaments and drop pending appeals.

Rahm said those conditions amount to “extorting players like myself.”

He owes the DPWT a fine of between $2 million and $3 million, according to various media reports. Rahm added that the DPWT would require him to enter six of its events, two of which it would choose.

“I don’t know what game they’re trying to play right now,” Rahm said, “but it just seems like in a way they’re using us to (capitalize on) our impact in tournaments and fining us and trying to benefit both ways from what we have to offer, and it’s just in a way they’re extorting players like myself and young players that have nothing to do with the politics of the game.

“So I don’t like the situation and I’m not going to agree to that.

“Now, I did tell them, funny enough, lower that to four events, like the minimum says, and I’ll sign tonight. They haven’t agreed to that. I just refuse to play six events. I don’t want to, and that’s not what the rules say.”

The 31-year-old Spaniard added, “I just don’t like the situation. I think we should be able to freely play where we want and have the choice to play where we want and not be dictated what we do. Especially myself. I can’t speak for others, only myself.

“I’ve always committed to play the minimum requirement (on the DPWT), and I think I’ve played four events, including the Spanish Open, every year except one as a pro, and I commit to do that. That’s not going to change. I still fully intend to do that.”

If Rahm sticks to his current position, he would be ineligible to compete for the European team at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Limerick, Ireland. He has part of the European squad for the past four competitions, winning the title three times while compiling a 9-5-3 record.

Hatton, a four-team Team Europe member who owns an 8-4-3 record in the Ryder Cup, made himself eligible by agreeing to the DPWT’s terms.

“I’ll gladly pay my way to go on the Ryder Cup, not have to pay to still be a member of the DP World Tour and fulfill a commitment that I’m fully willing to commit,” Rahm said.

Even with drama surrounding him off the course, Rahm is performing well. He finished as runner-up in each of the first two LIV events of the season, at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Adelaide, Australia, as he looks ahead to the tournament in Hong Kong that starts on Thursday.

“Happy with my play so far,” Rahm said. “I wish I could have converted one of those wins.”

Kyler D’Augustino, Jaxon Edwards and Maguire Mitchell all scored a team-high 23 points in the loss while three CSU (11-21) players also scored a game-high 23 points. Preist Ryan, Jaidon Lipscomb and Chevalier Emery all finished with 23 apiece as Cleveland State shot a blistering 63 percent from the floor and 11-of-20 (55 percent) from three.

The Jaguars shot 48 percent overall and 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from deep while forcing 17 CSU miscues. However, the inability to get stops when CSU did break the full-court press proved to be the difference in the game.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with teams trading runs throughout the evening. After leading by nine at intermission, CSU built a 14-point second half lead with 16:59 to play when Lipscomb swished a three. Using the press to continually force turnovers, the Jaguars melted the lead back to 73-71 with 8:04 to play when Edwards rattled in a wing three off a Finley Woodward find. CSU responded with a critical 7-1 burst to regain a three possession lead. The Vikings were later able to rebuild a double-digit lead before the Jags closed within five in the game’s final minute, fueled by back-to-back Mitchell buckets.

After a pair of made free throws, Mitchell misfired on a pair of threes that would’ve cut the lead back to four in the closing seconds before the hosts iced the game at the line.

IU Indy (7-25) threw a haymaker out of the gates, scoring the game’s opening nine points and forcing a pair of early turnovers. The lead was 12-3 when Mitchell drained his second three of the opening three-plus minutes before Cleveland State responded with a 9-0 run of its own. The first half featured nine lead changes, the final of which came on an Emery layup at the 8:15 mark that ignited a 12-2 CSU run. Cleveland State proceeded to make its final eight field goal attempts of the first half to build the 45-36 halftime advantage.

Head coach Ben Howlett tightened up the rotations with the season on the line as the team’s top four scorers all played 31-plus minutes. Edwards recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Woodward also had a double-double of 10 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. Woodward took over as the program’s single-season assist record holder in the first half of Monday’s game, ultimately finishing the season with 201 assists, eclipsing the prior mark by seven.

Mitchell hit for 20-plus for a third straight game to close the season, including drilling five treys. D’Augustino scored 18 of his 23 after halftime and was 8-of-16 from the field. Sophomore Kameron Tinsley contributed seven points and three rebounds off the bench while Micah Davis had six points, three rebounds and three assists.

Ryan had a double-double for the Vikings with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Lipscomb had eight assists to go along with his 23 points.

CSU won the glass by a 37-30 margin and scored 35 fast break points in beating the Jags for a second time in three meetings this season.

D’AUGUSTINO VOTED THIRD TEAM ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE

INDIANAPOLIS – IU Indianapolis junior guard Kyler D’Augustino has been voted Third Team All-Horizon League by the league’s coaches, as announced on Monday (Mar. 2). The 6-foot-1 guard closed the regular season averaging 18.3 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the floor and 39 percent from three-point range.

The Ohio-native currently ranks among the Horizon League’s top-10 in scoring (3rd; 18.3 ppg), field goal percentage (6th; 53.2%), minutes played (6th; 32.3 mpg) and assists (3.5 apg). He scored in double-digits in 25 of his 29 appearances this season, including topping 20-or-more 15 times. He had a season-high 31 against Wright State on Jan. 4 and had two different stretches in which he scored 20-or-more in four straight games.

In league play, he upped his output to 19.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while also leading the squad in steals (25). He continued to shoot at an efficient clip against league opponents, knocking down 50 percent from the floor, 36 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent at the foul line.

BALL STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL

MEN’S BASKETBALL IN KALAMAZOO FOR TUESDAY NIGHT GAME AT WMU

The Ball State men’s basketball team begins the final week of the regular season with a 7 p.m. game Tuesday night at Western Michigan.

The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+, while Mick Tidrow and David Eha handle the radio call on WMUN 92.5 FM / 1340 AM and on the WMUN app. Links to both broadcasts and live stats can be found above and on the schedule page.

Ball State (10-19, 5-11 Mid-American Conference) dominated the second half on its way to a 79-43 win at Northern Illinois on Saturday for its second straight win.

Western Michigan (10-19, 4-12 MAC) lost 69-67 on a last-second shot from No. 21 Miami on Friday night after beating Bowling Green on the road last Tuesday.

Dwayne Stephens is in his fourth season as the head coach in Kalamazoo.

The Broncos get production from their bench (28.9 points per game, second in the league) and in transition (12.6 fastbreak points per game, fourth in the MAC) while securing the fourth-most rebounds per contest in the conference (36.4).

Indianapolis native and senior guard Jayden Brewer paces WMU in scoring (12.9 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 per game). Junior guard Jalen Griffith averages 12.2 points a contest and a team high 3.4 assists per game.

The Cardinals will next conclude the regular season at home on Friday night against Central Michigan. Ball State is still in contention for a No. 7 or No. 8 seed in next week’s MAC Tournament.

HAVEN’T BEEN TO KALAMAZOO IN AWHILE: Tuesday’s game in Kalamazoo will be the first between the Ball State and Western Michigan men’s basketball programs at University Arena in exactly 25 months (Feb. 3, 2024)

The Cardinals won that game 77-67 on a Saturday afternoon. Ball State last faced WMU in Muncie on Jan. 28, 2025 and has played 40 games overall and 26 conference contests since the last time matching up with the Broncos.

HOUNDING THE HUSKIES: Ball State’s 43 points allowed in the 79-43 win at Northern Illinois were the fewest the men’s basketball team has allowed against a Mid-American Conference opponent since March 11, 2019 in a 61-43 win against Eastern Michigan.

The 36-point margin of victory was the largest against a MAC foe for the Cardinals since a 115-79 decision vs EMU on Feb. 27, 2016.

Ball State gave up only 96 total points to the Huskies in the two-game season series including a 58-53 win against Northern Illinois on Jan. 24. That was the first time the Cardinals had won a game scoring fewer than 60 points since Dec. 21, 2022 against Georgia Southern (58-54).

The last time the program had won a conference game without reaching the 60-point mark was Feb. 16, 2019 vs Akron (57-56).

STRONG START TO THE SECOND HALF: Ball State started the second half of Saturday’s win over Northern Illinois on a 21-0 scoring run to take a 57-29 lead with 13 minutes to play.

The stretch was Ball State’s best against an NCAA Division I foe this season following a 15-0 run at Central Michigan on Jan. 20. The Cardinals started the game against Earlham on Dec. 29 up 33-0.

HILL TO THE HOOP: Guard Davion Hill led the Cardinals in points (17), rebounds (six) and assists (season best seven) at NIU a game after going for a season high 26 points in last Tuesday night’s 74-73 overtime win against UMass.

The 26-point performance included an 11-for-11 showing at the free throw line, which was the first 100 percent effort at the foul line for a Cardinal this season shooting more than six free throws. Hill has now scored in double figures in eight straight games and 13 of the last 14 and leads the team in average points overall (13.5 per game) and in MAC play (15.6).

FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME FOR OVERTIME: The Ball State men’s basketball program went 33 games between overtime contests before last Tuesday’s 74-73 win over UMass featuring an extra session.

The Cardinals’ last overtime game before that was an 89-83 win against Northern Illinois on Feb. 15, 2025.

FIVE IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Ball State got five scorers in double figures for the second straight game in Saturday’s win at NIU.

Hill paced the Cardinals with 17 points followed by Armoni Zeigler (13 points), Elmore James IV (12), Kayden Fish (12) and Devon Barnes (11).

Four Cardinals scored 10 points each in the overtime win over UMass last Tuesday to join Hill (26) in double figures.

MILESTONES MET: Senior guards Devon Barnes and Juwan Maxey hit career scoring milestones in their respective NCAA Division I careers on Feb. 14 against Kent State.

Barnes joined the 1,000-point club on a free throw late in the first half, and Maxey made a layup early in the second half to hit the 500-point mark.

BENCH GETTING BUCKETS: Led by Kayden Fish’s 17 points at Louisiana Monroe, the Ball State bench scored more than half the team’s points with 38 in the win against the Warhawks.

Davion Hill added 14, and Juwan Maxey chipped in seven for the team averaging the fourth-most bench points per game in the MAC (25.9).

SUCCESS OVER THE SUN BELT: Ball State’s win at Louisiana Monroe on Feb. 7 clinched the Cardinals’ first sweep of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, which is in its third season.

A 75-64 win over Louisiana in the season opener was the first leg in the two-game event. Ball State is now 3-0 at home and 1-2 on the road in the Challenge and was one of only three MAC teams to win on Saturday against Sun Belt opponents.

The Cardinals became the first team in the series history with the Warhawks to win on the road, as both teams entered the contest 2-0 at home for a 2-2 split.

LOT OF LEADING SCORERS: Only five teams in NCAA Division I (George Washington, Tarleton State, Illinois State, VCU and USC) feature more different leading scorers in games this season than Ball State’s eight.

Davion Hill (10), Armoni Zeigler (eight), Devon Barnes (four), Kayden Fish (two), Joey Hart (two), Elmore James IV (two), Juwan Maxey (two), and Preston Copeland (one) have all led the Cardinals in scoring in at least one game this season.

TURNOVER TALK: Ball State committed only seven turnovers in Saturday’s win at Northern Illinois, which was the fifth game this season giving away seven or fewer turnovers (season low five at Central Michigan on Jan. 20).

Ball State is the top conference team in taking care of the ball (9.9 turnovers per game) and second in turnover margin (+2.1) against MAC foes.

Ball State kept control of the ball at Bowling Green on Feb. 3, giving up only 10 turnovers to a team that averaged more than 16 turnovers forced per game entering the contest for the sixth-most in NCAA Division I. The Cardinals have had 15 games so far this season with 10 or fewer giveaways.

CARDINALS CLAMPING DOWN ON DEFENSE: Ball State leads the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (69.4 points per game) and ranks second in fewest fouls committed per game (15.2) and fourth in steals per game (7.6) through the season’s first 29 contests.

DIALED IN FROM LONG RANGE: The Cardinals drained 13 3-pointers on Feb. 20 against Akron, which was the second-most Ball State has made this season behind 14 in a win over Le Moyne back on Nov. 30.

Eight of those triples were hit in the first half, and the 46.4 percent (13-28) mark from distance was the third-best in a game this season for the Cardinals.

BALL STATE BASEBALL

GARZA NAMED MAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Brendan Garza has been named the Mid-American Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Garza twirled a gem on Saturday night at Hawaii, firing a two-hit shutout in Ball State’s 1-0 win over the Rainbow Warriors. The sophomore right-handed pitcher for the Cardinals struck out five and allowed only two singles and two walks on the night, with no Hawaii baserunner advancing past first base. Garza worked 1-2-3 innings five times, as he retired the final 12 batters of the game following a leadoff walk in the sixth.

This was Ball State’s first complete game since Merritt Beeker allowed one run in 9.0 frames in May 2024 against Toledo at the Mid-American Conference Tournament and first nine-inning shutout in five years (John Baker against Western Michigan in a 2-0 win on March 19, 2021).

Garza joined Jacob Gillis as Ball State players with MAC weekly recognitions this season after Gillis was named the Co-Player of the Week last Monday.

MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

LATE-GAME COMEBACK GUIDES MARIAN TO CROSSROADS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of a raucous crowd in the PE Center on Monday night, the Marian women’s basketball team showed a flair for the dramatic in the waning moments, taking the final lead of the night with 90 seconds to play, as Taylor Double buried a three-pointer to help the Knights close out Saint Francis on a 9-0 run, clinching the Crossroads Leauge Tournament Championship 72-65. Marian is a commanding 29-2 on the year following the championship game win.

Marian played from behind early in the first quarter, as the Cougars mirrored the Knights’ season-long defensive identity with a physical first quarter, jumping out on top 5-0 in the first 90 seconds. Abbey McNally settled the Knights into the game with a three-point play, sparking an 8-0 run that broke through the Saint Francis defense. The Cougars would rock back in front, solidifying a lead with a three-point play of their own, leading to the visitors taking a 17-14 edge after one quarter.

The Knights would answer the first quarter deficit with a ]strong start to the second quarter, going through Abbey McNally. The senior scored three quick points, while a Kenna Kirby three-pointer would give Marian a narrow 20-19 lead. Kirby’s three came with 7:10 to play in the first half, but the big shot would give Marian their last edge of the period, as Saint Francis answered over a minute later with a Cali Gregory three-pointer. The game went back and forth after Gregory’s three ball, as Marian would match the Cougars’ next five scores, keeping the contest a one-possession game. Samiayh Stout would give Saint Francis the final lead of the first half in the closing seconds, as both Kiley McNally and her sister Abbey were unable to replicate a score on Marian’s final offensive possession, ending the half with the Knights trailing 32-30.

Following the halftime intermission, Saint Francis came out dialed in, putting Marian in a deeper hole as their lead grew to eight in the first 2:25 of the third quarter. The Knights missed their first three shots of the quarter, not settling in until Madisyn Bailey was able to turn a corner and sink a layup. Bailey’s layup quickly helped Marian cut the lead to four, as Kiley McNally made consecutive layups, but another offensive lapse allowed the Cougars to build a lead, with the road team taking the game’s only double-digit lead.

Marian was forced to use a timeout to try and lock back in, doing so methodically as Abbey McNally scored baskets on two of three possessions after the Cougars went on top 48-38. McNally would go on to score Marian’s final eight points in the third quarter, pushing her team back within six as the Knights trailed 52-46 entering the final period.

With 10 minutes to go in their Crossroads League season, Marian turned to their sharpest-shooter in the last month, running the offense primarily through Taylor Double. Double buried a two trifectas to open Marian’s fourth quarter scoring, heating up as she was able to cut the lead down to three points. Saint Francis would extend the margin to five after the second deep shot, but strong play from Kiley McNally and Madisyn Bailey willed the Knights within a point.

With Marian having cut the lead to one, Saint Francis made one final push to try to preserve the lead, getting a three-point play from Izzy Gizzi and a three-pointer from Gregory to push back in front by five at a 63-58 count. Marian would stay collected as the deficit mounted, getting a key three-point play of their own from Kennedy Coleman, while a bucket from Taylor Double with 2:46 remaining brought the game to a level 63-63 tie.

The Knights and Cougars would trade baskets to bring the game to 65-65, and Marian was given the opportunity to take a lead after Abbey McNally snared a rebound following Renna Schwieterman’s miss. With exactly 90 seconds remaining, Taylor Double pulled up and buried her third three-pointer of the fourth quarter, pushing Marian back in front for the first time since the second quarter, giving her team a 68-65 lead. The shot electrified the PE Center, and following a Cougar timeout, Kiley McNally fed off the crowd, getting a steal against Gizzi to give Marian a chance to burn the clock.

Madisyn Bailey was the benefactor of the McNally steal, as she drew a foul with 33 seconds left, sinking both foul shots to extend the lead to five. Saint Francis would use a timeout to advance the ball, but on the inbounds pass, Marian sealed the game, as Kenna Kirby swiped the ball and raced to the other end for a layup, punctuating the Knights’ game-clinching 9-0 run to seal the Knights’ CL Tournament Championship 72-65.

Marian’s championship is their sixth in program history, and marks the fifth time in program history that the team has won both the Crossroads League Regular Season and Tournament titles in the same season.

Taylor Double was Marian’s hero in their championship comeback, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, which included her 3-3 marksmanship from downtown in the last stanza. Abbey McNally would finish the game with her 18th double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 26 points in addition to grabbing 13 rebounds. McNally added one assist, one block, and three steals to her final numbers. Madisyn Bailey scored 12 points in the win, and Kenna Kirby had seven points, four assists, and two steals for the Knights.

With both Crossroads League titles captured, the Knights have earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship, where the team will host the NAIA First and Second Round games. It will be the sixth time in program history that the Knights have hosted the First and Second Round.

Marian’s First Round game will tip at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, and the Knights will learn their NAIA opponent on Thursday, March 5, during the NAIA Selection Show. The show airs at 8:00 p.m. on YouTube.

“SPORTS EXTRA”

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1953    The Braves owner Lou Perini, citing territorial privilege of the minor league Milwaukee Brewers, invokes territorial privilege, blocking a potential move by Bill Veeck to move his St. Louis Browns to the Cream City. In 15 days, the National League will approve the move of his club from Boston to Milwaukee, the first relocation of a major league franchise since 1903, when the Baltimore Orioles eventually became the Yankees.

1956    Manhattan Borough President Hulan Jack announces plans for a new 110,000-seat stadium with the intention of keeping the the Giants in the Big Apple. The proposed $75 million ballpark, planned to span the New York Central railroad tracks, will prove too costly to build, and will become a significant reason why owner’s Horace Stoneham’s decided to relocate the team to the West Coast.

1959    Candlestick Park is the winning entry in the Giants’ Name-the-Park contest, selected by the sports editors of San Francisco’s four daily newspapers from more than 20,000 entries, including Argonaut Arena and Zephyr Cove. Initially called Bay View Stadium, the ballpark’s new name reflects the shape of the rocks in the area known as Candlestick Point.

1967    The American League permits the White Sox to use a partially designated hitter in spring training. With the home club’s permission, each team will use a designated pinch-hitter twice in the same game.

1969    The Washington Post reports the Global League, featuring teams from the United States, Japan, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela, still needs to reach an agreement with a television network. The lack of a TV deal will derail the reality of the proposed third professional major league, which will operate for only a month before folding due to financial issues.

1984    Peter Ueberroth is elected baseball’s sixth commissioner, replacing Bowie Kuhn as the major league’s top executive. The former L.A. Olympic president will take office on October 1 and will receive compensation of $450,000, an amount that is nearly double his predecessor’s salary.

1987    Danny Kaye, who helped lead an investment group that bought the Mariners in 1976, dies of heart failure. The 74-year-old entertainer was a lifelong fan of the Dodgers, recording a hit tune entitled The D-O-D-G-E-R-S Song, which detailed a fictitious encounter with the rivals Giants during the actual 1962 pennant race.

1988    Upset by a practical joke played by teammate Jesse Orosco, Dodger slugger Kirk Gibson walks out of camp for a day. The southpaw reliever had put eye black on Gibson’s cap.

1997    In a controversial deal, the Yankees sign a ten-year contract with Adidas. The licensing agreement with the popular sportswear company puts team owner George Steinbrenner at odds with the baseball establishment.

2006    Jae-Weong Seo and Chan Ho Park combine to blank Taiwan in the inaugural World Baseball Classic opening game, 2-0. The first game of the 16-nation tournament, featuring the duel between the two South Korean hurlers, is played before a disappointing crowd of only 5,193 fans at Tokyo Dome.

2008    Noah Lowry throws 24 pitches before a batter takes a swing in the Giants’ 6-4 Cactus League exhibition loss to Texas. The 28-year-old right-hander, who issues nine bases-on-balls to the first 12 Rangers he faces, goes through the entire once without recording an official at-bat, thanks to a combination of walks and sacrifice flies.

2012    The Padres sign Cameron Maybin to a five-year contract extension. The new undisclosed deal for the 24-year-old outfielder is reportedly worth $25 million for five years, with another $7 million possible during an option year in 2017.

2015    Major League Baseball introduces its new pace of play initiatives, designed to make the games shorter in duration, during five exhibition contests played in Arizona and Florida. The new rules planned to be slowly introduced before the implementation of penalties include having batters keep one foot in the batter’s box after taking a pitch and using a clock to make innings start more punctually.

2016    Experts announce they have verified the legitimacy of seven identical Ty Cobb cards from the printing period of 1909 to 1911, bringing the total number known to exist to 22. The treasure, which features a picture of the ‘Georgia Peach’ on the front, with the words ‘Ty Cobb King of the Smoking Tobacco World’ on the back, was found in a paper bag mixed in with trash by relatives, who were cleaning the dilapidated house that belonged to their great-grandfather.
