MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
NO. 5 HOUSTON DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT AS NO. 14 KANSAS BOUNCES BACK
Tre White scored 23 points and No. 14 Kansas rebounded from a brutal setback to deliver a solid 69-56 victory over No. 5 Houston on Monday night in Big 12 play at Lawrence, Kan.
Darryn Peterson added 14 points as the Jayhawks (21-7, 11-4 Big 12) looked like a different team than the one that was routed 84-68 by visiting Cincinnati on Saturday.
Melvin Council Jr. and Bryson Tiller each scored 11 points for Kansas. Tiller blocked three shots and collected 10 rebounds as the Jayhawks held a 38-33 edge on the boards.
Kingston Flemings was the lone double-digit scorer for the Cougars (23-5, 11-4) but his 16 points came on 6-of-18 shooting. Houston lost its third straight game and made just 5 of 24 3-point shots and shot 31.8% overall.
The three-game slide is the first for the Cougars since January 2017. During this skid, Houston also lost at then-No. 6 Iowa State and at home to then-No. 4 Arizona.
Emanuel Sharpe had just five points on 1-of-10 shooting for the Cougars.
The Jayhawks made 44% of their shots from the field, including 7 of 17 from 3-point range.
Houston trailed 37-35 after a 3-pointer by Chris Cenac Jr. with 17:01 left in the contest.
Council converted a three-point play to start a 12-0 burst that included White draining a trey to make it a 10-point lead. Tiller split two free throws to end it and give the Jayhawks a 49-35 advantage with 12 minutes to go.
The Cougars responded with back-to-back hoops by Kalifa Sakho and Flemings before Peterson and White buried treys during an 8-0 burst that increased the Kansas lead to 57-39 with 9:14 remaining.
The lead reached 20 for the first time when White made two free throws to make it 61-41 with 7:32 left.
Flemings scored five points as Houston responded with the next seven to move within 13 with 5:50 to play.
Jamari McDowell and Peterson each hit 3-pointers as Kansas held off the charge and finished off an impressive victory.
White scored 11 first-half points for Kansas, which concluded the half with an 11-0 run to take a 31-27 lead.
Houston led 27-20 after Flemings’ fast-break dunk with 3:23 left. Bidunga’s dunk 15 seconds later sparked the Jayhawks and Peterson capped the flurry with a driving basket with two seconds remaining.
SETH TRIMBLE’S CAREER NIGHT LEADS NO. 18 NORTH CAROLINA OVER NO. 24 LOUISVILLE
Senior guard Seth Trimble pumped in a career-high 30 points and No. 18 North Carolina held off hard-charging No. 24 Louisville down the stretch for a 77-74 victory Monday night in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Henri Veesaar and Luka Bogavac both provided 12 points for North Carolina (22-6, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), which has won two in a row since last week’s blowout loss at North Carolina State. The Tar Heels, who overcame an early 10-point deficit, shot 53.6% from the field.
Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr. slowed down after a fast start and finished with 24 points on 9-for-25 shooting, though he bagged six 3-point shots.
Ryan Conwell racked up 23 points and J’Vonne Hadley added 14 points for the Cardinals (20-8, 9-6), who lost for only the second time in their last eight games.
Louisville held a 41-32 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive boards. But the team’s 38.8% shooting from the field proved troublesome.
The Tar Heels built a 16-point second-half lead before Louisville responded with a 9-0 run. North Carolina’s lead was 72-61 with 2:49 to play.
But the Cardinals kept coming and closed with 74-69 on Brown’s basket with less than two minutes to play. After a defensive stop, Louisville had a chance to apply more pressure, but Brown missed a 3-pointer.
North Carolina’s Jarin Stevenson missed a pair of free throws before Conwell sank a pair of foul shots with 51 seconds left to make it 74-71.
Louisville had another chance to close the gap, but Brown missed on a drive to the basket. Trimble hit two free throws before Brown’s long 3 in the final two seconds. Derek Dixon added a free throw for North Carolina.
Trimble finished 11-for-16 from the field.
North Carolina led 39-38 at halftime behind Trimble’s 16 points after the Cardinals were up 23-13 earlier. Eight of Louisville’s 15 first-half field goals were 3-pointers, but the Tar Heels countered with 60.7% shooting from the floor.

C-USA
MBB: FEBRUARY 23 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
DALLAS – WKU’s Teagan Moore and Sam Houston’s Jacob Walker earned Conference USA Men’s Basketball weekly honors. The 2025-26 Players of the Week are voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
CUSA Player of the Week – Teagan Moore, WKU – R-So. – G – Dry Ridge, Ky.
Moore secures his first CUSA Player of the Week honor after leading the Hilltoppers (16-11, 9-7 CUSA) to a perfect 2-0 week on the road, including an upset win over previously undefeated Liberty. The redshirt sophomore guard averaged 24.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in the two wins. In Wednesday’s overtime win at Delaware, Moore finished with a game-high 27 points on 9-14 shooting and an 8-9 effort from the free throw line. He then popped off for 21 points at Liberty, snapping its 17-game win streak. Moore currently ranks second in CUSA in scoring (18.3) and third in field goal percentage (51.5).
CUSA Freshman of the Week – Jacob Walker, Sam Houston – Fr. – G – Memphis, Tenn.
Walker earns his second Freshman of the Week award of the season after pushing Sam Houston (19-8, 11-5 CUSA) past MTSU and Jax State at home last week. Since taking over the starting point guard duties, Walker has continued to shine. FUEL HOST KALAMAZOO FOR EDUCATION DAY GAME

LAST TIME OUT
The last time these two teams met was on Saturday when the Fuel fell to the K-Wings 4-3 in overtime for the second night in a row. Just like on Friday, Lee Lapid opened the scoring. Michael Marchesan and Tyler Paquette also scored for the Fuel but it was not enough as Kalamazoo’s Ryan Cox scored a late game-tying goal and the overtime game winner.
GET SCHOOLED
The Fuel enter this game with a 4-2-0-0 record when hosting teams for Education Day games. This is a good sign, despite their struggle to defeat the K-Wings over the weekend. They will look to score early and close out the game in regulation rather than allowing another game to go to overtime.

INDIANA SWIMMING AND DIVING
NO. 3 INDIANA EYES FIFTH CONSECUTIVE BIG TEN TITLE
MADISON, Wis. – Indiana men’s swimming and diving is once again the favorite to win at the 2026 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships this week (Feb. 25-28) inside the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
The meet kicks off Wednesday (Feb. 25) at 5 p.m. ET with the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays before three full days of action Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Preliminaries will begin each of the final three days at 11 a.m. ET, setting up for finals each evening at 6 p.m. Fans can watch the meet via the B1G+ digital platform.
Indiana is the highest-ranked group in the conference, holding steady at No. 3 in the CSCAA poll since November. They will go up against No. 11 Ohio State, No. 12 Michigan, No. 15 USC, No. 19 Northwestern, No. 24 Wisconsin, Minnesota, Penn State and Purdue.
IU captured its 31st and fourth consecutive Big Ten title in 2025 with a 431-point gap ahead of the field – the largest margin of victory in conference history. Over the four-day meet, the Hoosiers won 11 Big Ten Championships, earned 26 medals, set three Big Ten records and six meet records. Then-junior Owen McDonald was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after sweeping his individual events: the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM.
McDonald and sophomore Miroslav Knedla both return after finishing first and second, respectively in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Raekwon Noel can add further depth in the events, holding top five times in the Big Ten in both distances as well as the 100-yard butterfly.
Indiana won’t be able to replicate its unprecedented dominance in the breaststroke events last season – winning the top five positions in the 100 breast and the top four positions in the 200 breast – after losing all six of the contributing swimmers to graduation, but there is still plenty to be excited for at “Breaststroke U.” Sophomore Alexei Avakov ranks No. 3 in the 100 breast this season with a 51.34, and freshmen Noah Cakir and Josh Bey each have top five times in the 200 breast.
This year, Indiana can assert its dominance in the distance events. Senior and two-time reigning NCAA 1,650 freestyle champion Zalán Sárkány owns the conference’s top times in that event (14:23.85 – just 2.56 off his Big Ten record time) and the 500 free (4:09.57). IU owns the Big Ten’s three best times in the 1,650 free between Sárkány, sophomore Luke Whitlock (14:37.47) and freshman Luke Ellis (14:45.59). Whitlock also has the fourth-best 500 free (4:11.82) this season, behind Sárkány and classmate Aaron Shackell (4:11.14).
Despite graduating two national champion divers in Quinn Henninger and Carson Tyler, the Hoosiers can still make a difference in the well. Sophomore Joshua Sollenberger has been one of the best springboard divers this season, and the 2024 NCAA runner-up on platform, senior Maxwell Weinrich, is the man to beat on the final day.
Boasting high-performing talent and depth, Indiana is the top seed in four of the five relays. IU ranks No. 3 in the conference in the 800-yard freestyle relay, though its time (6:13.01) sits within eight tenths of Ohio State’s mark (6:12.23).

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Fighting Irish (12-15, 3-11) have four guaranteed regular-season games remaining to leave it all out on the floor. On Tuesday, Notre Dame begins its final homestand, encompassing three games. On Tuesday, the Blue & Gold have a giant opportunity in hosting the No. 1 team in the nation. On Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, it’s Notre Dame vs. #1/1 Duke (25-2, 13-1) in a sold-out Purcell Pavilion.
Notre Dame has quite a rich history when hosting the No. 1 team in the country. The Fighting Irish are riding a 7-game win streak against the No. 1 team inside Purcell Pavilion:
- W 80-76 vs #2/1 North Carolina on 2/6/16
- W 67-58 vs #1/1 Syracuse on 1/21/12
- W 60-58 vs #1/1 North Carolina on 2/1/87
- W 76-74 in OT vs #1/1 DePaul on 2/27/80
- W 65-59 vs #1/1 Marquette on 2/26/78
- W 93-82 vs #1/1 San Francisco on 3/5/77
- W 71-70 vs #1/1 UCLA on 1/19/74
The Irish are 8-3 all-time at home vs. a No. 1 team in the country. The eighth and final win would be #1/1 UCLA on 1/23/71.
No matter the venue, the Irish have eight wins over AP No. 1 opponents. Only seven teams have more wins over AP No. 1 teams: North Carolina (14), UCLA (12), Duke (11), Kansas (10), Maryland (10), Ohio State (10) and Kentucky (9).
The Blue Devils enter the matchup with a 25-2 record with their only losses coming to Texas Tech on Dec. 20 and North Carolina on Feb. 7. They shoot 50.0% from the field, which ranks 18th nationally, while limiting opponents to 63.1 ppg (ranks 3rd in the country). They are led by freshman Cameron Boozer and his 22.6 ppg, which ranks 5th nationally.
COLE CERTA FLU GAME
Listed as probable before the game due to the flu, it certainly didn’t show for Cole Certa. The sophomore went off for a career-high 37 points in the 89-74 win over Georgia Tech.
The 37 points tied Matt Farrell for the second most in an ACC game (most in regulation), trailing only Markus Burton’s 43 points in 2OT game against Cal a season ago.
Certa drained a career-best seven threes, finishing 7-11. He was 12-20 from the field overall. Certa dropped 21 points in the first half, marking the first time an Irish player has done so since Markus Burton’s 22 at Syracuse on Jan. 18, 2025.
Furthermore, Braeden Shrewsberry and Logan Imes each stepped up to complement Cole. Braeden netted his fourth 20-point game of the season with 20 exactly, converting 4-8 from three to go with his team-high 4 assists. Meanwhile, Logan produced the best game of his career, starting in place of the injured Jalen Haralson. Logan earned a career high in points (14) and rebounds (9).
THE CATHOLIC CANNONS
Cole Certa and Braeden Shrewsberry have heated up from three in the month of February. It’s just factual. Over 5 games in February, Certa is averaging the 2nd most made threes per game at 4.4 amongst power conference players, trailing only Texas Tech’s Donovan Atwell (4.5). Meanwhile, Shrewsberry checks in at 3.4. Their combined 7.8 made threes per game is the 2nd highest mark between teammates this month amongst power conference duos, trailing just Texas Tech’s Atwell & Anderson and their combined 8.3.
To put into perspective how crazy this stat is — 7.8 made threes per game is more than what four squads in the ACC are averaging as a team. In addition, Cole’s 22 made threes in February ranks 5th amongst power conference players, which is impressive since he’s played one less game than all four players who rank in front of him.
1. Donovan Atwell, Texas Tech – 27 in 6
2. Pryce Sandfort, Nebraska – 25 in 6
3. Mikel Brown Jr, Louisville – 23 in 6
4. Bennett Stirtz, Iowa – 23 in 7
5. Cole Certa, ND – 22 in 5
OFFENSE FINDING A WAY
The first half of Pitt was certainly an outlier when it comes to this game note, but with that said, the Irish have found success offensively despite missing Markus Burton’s 18.5 ppg and Jalen Haralson’s 16.3 ppg in league play. Given those hurdles, Notre Dame has still shot over 50 percent in 5 of their last 8 halves. In the 2nd half of Pitt, ND put up 48 points on 50% shooting.
Further perspective … over the first 6 ACC games, Notre Dame averaged 69.0 ppg on 41.4% shooting. Over the last 7 games, a different story – 78.7 ppg on 45.5% shooting. The 3-headed monster of Certa, Haralson & Shrewsberry has combined for 53.4 ppg in that 7-game span.
Individually speaking, let’s start with the sophomore sharpshooter Cole Certa, who is on a career best 5 game double-digit scoring streak. He’s totaled 101 points (20.2 ppg) behind 35-84 shooting (41.7%), 22-57 from three (38.6%).
He recently produced a career-high 37-point performance, which marked his second 30-point game in the last 7 games. The other was a 34-point effort vs. #17 Virginia on Jan. 27.
His two 30-burgers are the second most in ACC play, only behind Ebuka Okorie’s 3. In fact, Cole owns the 3rd and 5th highest scoring performances in league play with his 37 and 34 points.
Braeden Shrewsberry had produced 3 straight games in double figures before settling with 6 points at Pitt. Over the last 5 games, Braeden has averaged 13.6 ppg, which encompasses a 20-point game vs. Georgia Tech, 16 at SMU and 18 vs. Florida State.
Completing the trifecta is Jalen Haralson, though he has missed the last couple of games due to an injured ankle. The freshman was playing his best basketball of the season before the injury. He had produced three games of 20 or more points over the last five he played. He was averaging 18.4 points, 4.0 rebounds & 3.5 assists in that timeframe, shooting a hot 59.3% from the field. There were only 2 players averaging 18 points, 4 rebounds & 3.5 assists since Jan. 27:
– Jalen Haralson
– Mikel Brown Jr.
Jalen’s top game – a career high 26 points at Syracuse, with 19 coming in the 2nd half on 6-7 shooting. Not to mention, a dunk worthy of the SportsCenter Top-10.
FRESHMAN STANDOUT JALEN HARALSON
Speaking of next man up, Notre Dame will most likely be without the services of freshman sensation Jalen Haralson. The Indiana native was impressing in his debut season as he worked toward ACC All-Rookie team consideration. Haralson is averaging a team best 16.3 ppg in ACC play. That number ranks 5th amongst ACC freshman. He shoots an efficient 52.9% from the floor in league play which ranks 8th overall amongst ACC players in any class.
ACC Rookie Averages in League Play:
1. Cameron Boozer, 22.4
2. Ebuka Okorie, 21.9
3. Caleb Wilson, 20.1
4. Thijs De Ridder, 16.4
5. Jalen Haralson, 16.3
He’s registered double-digit points in all but 3 games and has earned six games of 20+ — three in ACC play over the last five games he played: 20 vs Virginia, career high 26 at Syracuse and 23 at SMU.
Jalen is strong and shifty when attacking the rim, converting 69.3% from within 4.5 feet. The Fishers, Indiana, native shoots 53.9% overall from two-point range, in addition to leading the team in free throw attempts (6.0 per game).
SHREWSBERRY LEADING FROM THREE
Braeden Shrewsberry continues to prove he’s one of the best from deep, ranking 4th in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage at 40.6%. That number also ranks 40th in the country. He’s converting 2.9 made threes per game, which ranks 3rd in the league.
Shrewsberry’s sweet spot? The corner three – where he’s draining 50.0%, which is 14.2% above the Division I average.
His best performance from beyond the arc came against Evansville when Shrewsberry scored a career-high 26 points behind a career-high 8 three pointers, shooting 80% from three (8-10). His 8 made triples tied for the 7th most in a game all-time in program history.
Braeden has drained 78 threes on the year. For comparison, he recorded 78 as a freshman and 72 in a shortened sophomore campaign.
BRAEDEN CAREER ACCOLADES
Speaking of Shrewsberry making it rain, the junior reached the 1,000-point career milestone at SMU on Feb. 10, doing so in 84 games. He became the 69th Notre Dame player all-time to reach the milestone. That number ties Louisville for 3rd most all-time behind Duke (70) & UNC (81).
Braeden also enters Saturday’s matchup with 228 career made threes. He is now 9 away (237) from moving into the program’s top-10.
REBOUNDING TRANSLATES
Towt’s current rebounding rankings:
- 9.4 rpg ranks 25th nationally, 4th in the ACC
- 3.7 offensive rpg – 1st in ACC/13th in country
- 5.7 defensive rpg – 5th in ACC
- 1,332 career rebounds – leads all active players
- His 1,332 career rebounds have pushed him into the top-100 all-time list at #63.
NOTRE NOTABLES
- The Irish are 10 wins away from 2,000 all-time. They would become the eighth program to achieve this feat.
- Certa is averaging a team-best 17.3 ppg against ranked opposition.
- Towt is 14-20 from the field over the last 5 games, totaling 29 points in that span.
- Braeden and Brady Koehler are finding success in the midrange, where they are shooting 44.4% & 58.8%, respectively.
- Certa is 69-77 from the free-throw line. His 89.6% leads all ACC players and would rank 3rd for a season at ND. Steve Vasturia holds the top spot at 91.0%.
- With a 12-point outburst at Pitt behind 4-5 shooting from three, Ryder Frost is now shooting 41.9% from beyond the arc on the season. Obviously, a smaller sample size, but that’s the highest three-point percentage on the team.
- Logan Imes — back-to-back games in double figures for the first time in his career, filling in for the injured Jalen Haralson. He recorded a 12-point game at Pitt and a career high 14 points on 6-12 shooting (2-4 from three) in the win over Georgia Tech. Plus, he’s grabbed 17 rebounds over those 2 games.

A WEEK OF BEGINNING AND ENDING: Ball State and UMass will play for the first time in series history in Muncie on Tuesday, and the Cardinals and Northern Illinois will play for the last time as Mid-American Conference foes on Saturday in DeKalb.
The Minutemen joined the MAC in advance of the 2025-26 season, and the Huskies are leaving the conference to join the Horizon League in time for the 2026-27 campaign.
DIALED IN FROM LONG RANGE: The Cardinals drained 13 3-pointers on Friday against Akron, which was the second-most Ball State has made this season behind 14 in a win over Le Moyne back on Nov. 30.
Eight of those triples were hit in the first half, and the 46.4 percent (13-28) mark from distance was the third-best in a game this season for the Cardinals.
HILL TO THE HOOP: Guard Davion Hill notched his first double-double at the NCAA Division I level with 18 points and 11 rebounds on Friday night against Akron.
Hill has now scored in double figures in six straight games and 11 of the last 12 and leads the team in average points overall (12.9 per game) and in MAC play (14.8).
BARNES GETTING GOING: Devon Barnes went 4-for-5 on 3-pointers on his way to 16 points against Akron a game after putting up a team-high 17 points last Tuesday night at Ohio, scoring 15 of those in the second half on 6-for-7 shooting from the field including 3-for-3 from distance.

The game against the Bobcats was the second for Copeland this season with double figures in rebounds following a 16-board performance in a win vs Le Moyne on Nov. 30.
MILESTONES MET: Senior guards Devon Barnes and Juwan Maxey hit career scoring milestones in their respective NCAA Division I careers on Feb. 14 against Kent State.
Barnes joined the 1,000-point club on a free throw late in the first half, and Maxey made a layup early in the second half to hit the 500-point mark.
MAXEY MAKING SHOTS: Juwan Maxey made two 3-pointers on Friday night, draining multiple triples for the fourth time in five games.
The guard has hit multiple 3-pointers in eight games this season includine a three-game stretch with 3+ triples in each game at the Lafayette Classic in late November. The senior has now made at least one 3-pointer in six straight games.
BENCH GETTING BUCKETS: Led by Kayden Fish’s 17 points at Louisiana Monroe, the Ball State bench scored more than half the team’s points with 38 in the win against the Warhawks.
Davion Hill added 14, and Juwan Maxey chipped in seven for the team averaging the fourth-most bench points per game in the MAC (25.5).
SUCCESS OVER THE SUN BELT: Ball State’s win at Louisiana Monroe on Feb. 7 clinched the Cardinals’ first sweep of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, which is in its third season.
A 75-64 win over Louisiana in the season opener was the first leg in the two-game event. Ball State is now 3-0 at home and 1-2 on the road in the Challenge and was one of only three MAC teams to win on Saturday against Sun Belt opponents.
The Cardinals became the first team in the series history with the Warhawks to win on the road, as both teams entered the contest 2-0 at home for a 2-2 split.
LOT OF LEADING SCORERS: Only four teams in NCAA Division I (George Washington, Tarleton State, Illinois State and VCU) feature more different leading scorers in games this season than Ball State’s eight.
Armoni Zeigler (eight), Davion Hill (five), Devon Barnes (three), Kayden Fish (two), Joey Hart (two), Elmore James IV (two), Juwan Maxey (two), and Preston Copeland (one) have all led the Cardinals in scoring in at least one game this season.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE: Ball State’s 58-53 win against Northern Illinois on Jan. 24 was the first time the Cardinals have won a game scoring fewer than 60 points since Dec. 21, 2022 against Georgia Southern (58-54).
The last time the program had won a conference game without reaching the 60-point mark was Feb. 16, 2019 vs Akron (57-56).
TURNOVER TALK: Ball State committed only eight turnovers in the Jan. 24 triumph vs Northern Illinois a game after limiting giveaways to a season-low five in the win at Central Michigan.

The Sycamores went 2-1 over the weekend featuring an 11-3 win on Friday over Miami and a 10-2 victory on Sunday over UMass Lowell, while suffering a 16-12 setback on Saturday against Brown.
The weekend record moved the Sycamores to 3-4 overall on the year and marked three consecutive games the Sycamores have scored double-digit runs.

Roell hit for the cycle over the weekend with a double, triple, and home run against Brown, while adding a single on Sunday against UMass Lowell.
Roell added a career-high five runs scored in Saturday’s game against Brown and paced the Sycamores with seven runs scored overall over two games.

Ray Jesse (.400) added his first double of the season and a pair of RBIs against Brown.

Nick Sutherlin has come through in a number of clutch situations early for the Sycamores and continued to produce this past week as the senior third baseman added to his team-leading 10 RBIs on the year. He’s driven in at least one run in six of the seven contests, including a pair of three RBI games against Manhattan and UMass Lowell.
Three Sycamores have been penciled into the starting lineup every game so far in the 2026 season with Carter Beck (CF), Emil Estrella (DH/RF), and Nick Sutherlin (3B) everyday starters. Caden Miller, Eddie Alonso, and Caleb Niehaus have also been on the field in all seven games.

Sycamores Against the Florida Gulf Coast
The Indiana State and Florida Gulf Coast series has been a recent development with the Sycamores and Eagles first competing against each other back in the 2021 season.
Indiana State holds the 4-0 advantage all-time against the Eagles, including last year’s 8-5 win over FGCU in Swanson Stadium on February 18, 2025.
In last season’s win, the Sycamores utilized a six-run second inning, aided by a trio of FGCU errors, and the Indiana State bullpen shut down a late rally in securing the 8-5 victory.
Carter Beck and Keegan Garis both homered in the contest against the Eagles, while Max McEwen went 3.2 innings in solid relief.
Jacob Spencer went the first 3.0 innings in his first start with the Sycamores, while Breyllin Suriel, Zac Laird, and Gavin Morris worked the final 2.1 innings to close out the win.
Indiana State has lined up against FGCU in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
About the Eagles
Florida Gulf Coast enters the midweek series with a 7-0 record after sweeping Stonehill this past weekend in Swanson Stadium. The Eagles have added a series sweep over North Dakota State and a midweek win over Minnesota.
FGCU is in the midst of a 12-game homestand to open the year with a three-game series against Boston College on tap for February 27-March 1.
FGCU was selected second overall in the preseason Atlantic Sun Graphite Division Coaches poll, receiving two first-place votes and 30 total points in the poll.

Multiple Homers, Same Inning
Indiana State connected on three home runs in the fifth inning of the Sycamores’ 10-2 win over UMass Lowell as Nick Sutherlin, Eddie Alonso, and Jeremy Martinez all went deep in the eight-run frame against the River Hawks.
It marked the Sycamores’ first time hitting three homers in the same inning since May 4, 2024, when Dom Listi, Luis Hernandez, and Mike Sears all homered in the seventh inning against Belmont.
Alonso (three-run) and Martinez (solo) went back-to-back in the inning, marking the first time the duo have connected back-to-back on the year.
Alonso and Martinez’s back-to-back homers marked Indiana State’s first back-to-back homer game since Carter Beck and Weston Fulk went back-to-back in the first inning against Wagner last year on February 14, 2025.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF
SOMERVILLE LEADS BEACONS IN FIRST ROUND IN CALIFORNIA
The Valparaiso University men’s golf team played the first 18 holes of the three-day, 54-hole Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, hosted by Wyoming at the par-72, 7305-yard Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., on Monday. Redshirt junior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) posted the team’s top score.
How It Happened
Somerville turned in a 71 (-1) and ranks tied for 29th in the 124-player field. He started his day with a bogey on Hole 7, but then stroked par or better on the next 17 holes. He had two birdies in a three-hole stretch on 11 and 13.
Sophomore Rodrigo Garcia Teruel (Puebla, Mexico / Modern Academy) and junior Adam Melliere (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville) tied for second on the team, as each of them posted a score of 74 (+2) on Monday. They are tied for 73rd in the field. Garcia Teruel had a quad on his second hole of the day on Hole 8, but recovered by playing the next 16 holes at two under.
As a team, Valpo finished the day tied for 16th of 23 with a 294 (+6). Colorado is the team leader at 276. Four individuals are tied atop the leaderboard with 5-under 67s. Relative to conference peers, Valpo is behind Drake (285) but ahead of UNI (306).
Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring
“With the shotgun start, our team started on the toughest part of the golf course – Holes 7-11. We knew we would have a good challenge to get the round started. With the exception of a quadruple bogey on the eighth Hole, our top four scorers for the day played that stretch even par. We basically finished our first nine holes with a poor stretch in Holes 16-18, but the team bounced back with six birdies in the next five holes. We finished the final six holes of today’s round with our top four scorers playing those holes at three under. I was very pleased to see that type of finish, especially with the round taking over 6.5 hours to play and the team needing a solid close to the round.”
“The golf course demands a lot of accuracy off the tee. We still had the equivalent of nine double bogeys, primarily from poor tee shots with penalties. We are going to need to clean that up tomorrow with better course management and missing the correct areas on a given hole. We still had a good amount of 3-putts and most of that was from poor proximity hitting into the green and poor speed of putts on the greens. If we can tighten both of these areas up tomorrow, we can get our team scoring back into the red numbers.”
“Ryan was super steady for us today. He had all pars, except his single bogey and two birdies. He didn’t have any penalties off the tee and he hit the ball well. Despite some bad luck on the fifth hole, Elliot had a terrific finish to his round, making birdies on three of his final six holes. Lastly, I was proud of Rodrigo and grinding out a two over round, after making a quadruple bogey on his second hole of the day. He played the final 16 holes at -2 under, even though he didn’t hit the ball very well.”
Up Next
The Beacons will play the second round of the Desert Intercollegiate as Day 2 of the three-day event takes place on Tuesday. A link to live scoring via Clippd will be available on ValpoAthletics.com.
