TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 9 KANSAS ENDS NO. 1 ARIZONA’S PERFECT RUN
Flory Bidunga scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 9 Kansas handed top-ranked Arizona its first loss of the season, 82-78 on Monday at Lawrence, Kan.
The Wildcats (23-1, 10-1 Big 12) achieved the best start in Big 12 history at 23-0 overall before the defeat. Kansas (19-5, 9-2) beat the No. 1 team at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time ever after losing five such games, including to Arizona the last time in 2003.
The Jayhawks won their eighth straight game overall despite playing without freshman star Darryn Peterson, who had flu-like symptoms. It was the 11th game Kansas played without Peterson, who has dealt with an ankle sprain, hamstring strain and chronic cramping.
Arizona led by 11 with 17:02 to go before Kansas rallied, scoring seven straight points in little more than a minute, then keeping the score within six until a Bidunga field goal gave the Jayhawks the lead with 9:32 to go. Kansas never trailed again. Miami (Ohio) is the nation’s lone remaining unbeaten at 24-0.
No. 17 St. John’s 87, Xavier 82 (OT)
Zuby Ejiofor scored six points in overtime for the Red Storm, who fended off an upset bid by the Musketeers to win in New York, giving coach Rick Pitino another milestone win against his son Richard.
The win was the 904th on-court victory for the elder Pitino, who snapped a tie with Roy Williams for third-place all-time. On Jan. 24, the Red Storm beat the Musketeers for Rick Pitino’s 900th win. The NCAA recognizes Rick Pitino with 781 wins after he was stripped of 123 victories due to violations at Louisville.
Ejiofor finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists for St. John’s (19-5, 12-1 Big East), which has won 10 straight — the third 10-game winning streak in the last two seasons under Rick Pitino. Tre Carroll had 21 points and eight rebounds but missed a potential game-winning shot at the regulation buzzer for Xavier (12-12, 4-9).
No. 24 Louisville 118, North Carolina State 77
Freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. tied the Louisville single-game scoring mark with 45 points and matched another single-game record with 10 3-pointers to lead the Cardinals past the visiting Wolfpack.
Brown matched Wes Unseld’s single-game school record set against Georgetown (Ky.) College on Dec. 1, 1967. Brown’s point total set the Atlantic Coast Conference freshman record, and his 10 3-pointers tied the school record established by Reyne Smith last season against SMU.
Ryan Conwell added 31 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Cardinals (18-6, 8-4 ACC), who have won four in a row. North Carolina State (18-7, 9-3) got 20 points from Ven-Allen Lubin but had a six-game winning streak end.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
PAIR OF 30-POINT SCORERS CARRY NO. 5 VANDERBILT PAST NO. 10 OKLAHOMA
Mikayla Blakes scored 34 points and freshman Aubrey Galvan poured in a career-high 30 points, powering No. 5 Vanderbilt to a 102-86 win over No. 10 Oklahoma on Monday in Nashville.
Galvan hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, for the Commodores (23-2, 9-2 Southeastern Conference). Her previous best was a 20-point effort against Michigan on Jan. 19.
Blakes notched her eighth 30-plus-point game of the season, shooting 13-for-23 and adding six assists in Vanderbilt’s third consecutive win.
The Sooners (17-6, 5-5) dropped their second game in a row despite getting double-doubles from Raegan Beers (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Sahara Williams (17 points, 10 boards). Each of those two committed six of Oklahoma’s 22 turnovers.
The Commodores led 31-19 after the first quarter, and the margin never slipped into single digits through the rest of the game.
NO. 4 TEXAS RIDES DEFENSE TO VICTORY OVER NO. 18 KENTUCKY
No. 4 Texas’ defense forced No. 18 Kentucky into a season-high 23 turnovers, and the Longhorns emerged with a 64-53 win on Monday in Austin, Texas.
Kyla Oldacre logged three steals and four of her teammates had two apiece as Texas (23-2, 8-2 Southeastern Conference) won its fifth game in a row. The Longhorns scored 19 points off the Wildcats’ giveaways.
Justice Carlton topped the Longhorns with 17 points, and Jordan Lee scored 13. Madison Booker, who averages 19 points per game, was held to eight on 1-of-6 shooting from the floor.
Asia Boone scored 16 points as Kentucky (18-7, 5-6) suffered its fifth loss in six games. Clara Strack amassed 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds, and Tonie Morgan contributed 12 points.

NBA ROUNDUP: PISTONS TOP HORNETS AT FIGHT NIGHT IN CHARLOTTE
Cade Cunningham led everyone with 33 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the visiting Detroit Pistons held on for a 110-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets Monday night in a game marred by a massive third-quarter brawl.
The fighting resulted in four ejections prior to the Pistons winning for the seventh time in their last nine games and the Hornets seeing an end to their nine-game winning streak.
It began with a confrontation when Charlotte’s Moussa Diabate fouled Detroit’s Jalen Duren across the arms while trying to stop a shot attempt in the paint. Duren turned to square up with Diabate and issued a slap that set Diabate off. When that scrap wound down, another broke out near midcourt with the main participants being Charlotte’s Miles Bridges and Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart, who came off the bench.
By the end of the fighting, the mayhem spread across most of the court. Diabate, Bridges, Duren and Stewart were ejected at the 7:09 mark of the third quarter — at which point the Pistons owned a 70-62 lead. Duncan Robinson provided 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, Duren had 15 points in 20 minutes and Paul Reed added 12 points for the Pistons.

Donovan Mitchell hit two free throws with less than a second left and Cleveland rallied from down seven late in the fourth quarter to beat host Denver for the Cavaliers’ ninth win in 10 games.
Mitchell finished with 32 points and 10 assists, James Harden added 22 points and 10 rebounds in his second game with the Cavaliers, and Jarrett Allen had 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Nikola Jokic put up 22 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists, but the Nuggets lost for the fourth time in five games when he missed a 3-point attempt at the horn. Jamal Murray amassed 17 points and 11 assists.
Thunder 119, Lakers 110
Jalen Williams scored 23 points and Isaiah Joe added 19 as Oklahoma City ended a two-game losing streak with a win in Los Angeles in a game where both teams were missing an All-Star.
Alex Caruso put up 17 points and Chet Holmgren totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder, who were without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (abdominal strain) for the third consecutive game. Gilgeous-Alexander will be replaced in the All-Star Game on Sunday by the Houston Rockets’ Alperen Sengun.
LeBron James scored 22 points and dished 10 assists while Marcus Smart added 19 points for the Lakers, who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end. Los Angeles was without Luka Doncic (left hamstring strain) for the second consecutive game. Doncic (32.8 points per game) and Gilgeous-Alexander (31.8 ppg) are the NBA’s top two scorers.
Trail Blazers 135, 76ers 118
Toumani Camara established career highs of 30 points and eight 3-pointers as Portland routed visiting Philadelphia, which was playing the final game of a five-game trip.
Deni Avdija returned from a four-game absence caused by a back injury to produce 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Portland, which outscored the 76ers 49-22 in the decisive third quarter. Jerami Grant and Donovan Clingan added 15 points apiece for the Trail Blazers, who won their third straight game.

Warriors 114, Grizzlies 113

Pat Spencer had 17 points and seven assists to lead the Warriors, who were without injured Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler III as they await the debut of Kristaps Porzingis. Memphis was missing Ja Morant, Santi Aldama and Zach Edey.
Ty Jerome was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points to complement seven assists for the Grizzlies, who lost their third game in a row. Rookie Jahmai Mashack chipped in with a career-high 17 points but missed a shot in the final seconds.
Jazz 115, Heat 111
Reserve Brice Sensabaugh knocked in a go-ahead 3-pointer with 46.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter as visiting Utah shocked Miami.
Utah, which entered Monday with 18 losses in its 22 previous games, led 85-82 after three quarters. However, for the second straight game, the Jazz benched multiple starters for the entire fourth quarter.
Still, the Jazz prevailed despite the late absence of Jaren Jackson Jr. (22 points), Markkanen (17 points) and Jusuf Nurkic (10 points, game-high 16 rebounds). The Heat were led by Andrew Wiggins, who scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter. Bam Adebayo added 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Pelicans 120, Kings 94
Trey Murphy III produced 21 points and seven assists, Zion Williamson added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, and New Orleans knocked off visiting Sacramento, handing the Kings a record-setting defeat.
The Kings took their 13th defeat in a row, setting a club record since the team moved to Sacramento ahead of the 1985-86 season. The franchise-worst skid is 14 games, recorded by the Cincinnati Royals in both 1959-60 and 1971-72.
Jeremiah Fears added 20 points off the bench for the Pelicans, who won their second straight game while posting their biggest win of the season in terms of margin of victory. Rookie Maxime Reynaud totaled 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to lead Sacramento.
Nets 123, Bulls 115
Nic Claxton collected a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds and Brooklyn came back from blowing a 15-point lead in the third quarter to beat Chicago in New York.
The Nets won consecutive games for the third time this season thanks to Claxton, who made 12 of 15 shots and surpassed his previous career high of 27 set against the Detroit Pistons on Jan. 26, 2023. He recorded his 10th double-double and added four assists.
Claxton’s big night helped the Nets improve to 2-9 this season when Michael Porter Jr. is held out. Porter sat due to right knee tendinitis and rookie Egor Demin was rested. The Bulls dropped their fifth straight and fell for the eighth time in nine games.
Timberwolves 138, Hawks 116
Anthony Edwards scored 30 points on 11-for-21 shooting and Minnesota pulled away for a win over Atlanta in Minneapolis.
Julius Randle notched 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the Timberwolves, who bounced back from a 19-point loss one day earlier against the Los Angeles Clippers. Ayo Dosunmu recorded 21 points off the bench.
CJ McCollum put up 38 points to lead Atlanta, which lost its second game in a row. Nickeil Alexander-Walker registered 23 points and 12 rebounds against his former team.
Magic 118, Bucks 99
Franz Wagner scored 14 points in 17 minutes in his return to action for Orlando and was a catalyst in a game-changing third-quarter run as the Magic downed visiting Milwaukee.
Anthony Black amassed 26 points and Desmond Bane added 25 for the Magic, who have now won three in a row, matching their best runs of the season.
Milwaukee’s modest three-game winning streak — its longest of the season — was snapped. The Bucks, still without star Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf), got 28 points and seven assists from Kevin Porter Jr. plus 15 points from AJ Green.

NHL

INDIANA SPORTS RELEASES
INDIANA PACERS
GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT KNICKS
The Pacers (13-40) continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday night in New York against Jalen Brunson and the Knicks (34-19). It will be Indiana’s first game back at Madison Square Garden since the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals, where the Pacers ultimately bested the Knicks in six games to advance to the NBA Finals.
The Pacers have dropped the first two games of their road trip, including a 122-104 loss to the Raptors on Sunday afternoon in Toronto. Indiana had a two-point lead at halftime, but the Raptors surged ahead in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue & Gold 44-26 in the frame.
All-Star forward Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 18 points, but it was a rough offensive night for Indiana. They shot 44.9 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers, which the Raptors converted into 24 points on the other end.
The Knicks are one of the top contenders in the East this season, but have experienced an up-and-down season. New York was 23-9 to start the season and won the NBA Cup in Las Vegas in December, but the Knicks dropped nine of 11 games from Dec. 31 — Jan. 19. They won their next eight straight games before falling in Detroit on Friday, but bounced back with a 111-89 victory on Sunday in Boston behind 31 points from Brunson.
Brunson leads the Knicks and ranks ninth in the NBA in scoring at 27.1 points per game. Fellow All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns adds 19.7 points per contest and leads the league in rebounding, pulling down 11.9 boards a night.

Dec. 18, 2025: Jalen Brunson’s 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds remaining lifted the Knicks to a 114-113 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Pacers led for much of the night, including by 16 points in the third quarter and by seven with just over five minutes remaining. But New York rallied and eventually tied the game at 1:11 on OG Anunoby’s three with 1:51 to play. Pascal Siakam drew a foul and made both free throws to put Indiana back in front with 16.9 seconds left, but Brunson responded by sinking the game-winner.
Andrew Nembhard led all scorers with 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting (4-of-5 from 3-point range) in the loss. Siakam added 26 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals, while Bennedict Mathurin tallied 16 points and eight boards.

INDY IGNITE
IGNITE CAN’T FIND THEIR MOJO, FALL IN FOUR SETS
SAN DIEGO (February 9, 2026) – It was somehow fitting for their first late-night outing of the 2026 season that the Indy Ignite’s match was decided by late-set heroics at San Diego. It was the host Mojo who delivered the most at crunch time, ending Indy’s three-match winning streak in the West Coast battle that didn’t begin until 10 p.m. ET.
San Diego won in four sets – 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-15. The defeat dropped the Ignite to 6-2 but they still lead the Major League Volleyball standings by percentage points over 7-3 Omaha.
The first three sets saw quick changes of fortune at the conclusion of each. The Ignite fell behind by as many as six points in the opening frame and still trailed 23-20 when they mounted a five-point surge to win 25-23. Middle blocker Lydia Martyn sparked the comeback with two kills and a block among those final five points, completing the set with six kills, three blocks and an equal kill percentage and efficiency of 60.0%.
The Mojo turned the tables on the Ignite in the next two sets. Indy led set two 22-21 before San Diego went on a 4-1 run to even the match at a set apiece. The third set was nearly identical. The Ignite were up 22-21 again before the Mojo ran off four unanswered points to definitively claim the momentum.
San Diego never trailed in the fourth set, bolting to a commanding 14-6 lead and edging away to the 10-point triumph that sealed the Mojo’s third win in nine outings.
“We kind of knew watching them grow every game that it was going to be a pretty tough game today,” Indy head coach Lauren Bertolacci said. “They did really well. They honestly just outworked us a little bit. Defense, cover, kept the ball alive, and then they were able to take their chances in transition, so credit to them 100 percent. I think we’ve got a few things to improve on, but luckily it’s a long season so I’m sure we will.”
Bertolacci pointed to what she called “chaotic plays” late in the early sets when San Diego was able to keep rallies alive and make plays when Indy could not – something out of character for this Ignite team, even early in the season.
That was reflected in the match statistics. Leading MLV in both kill percentage (40.2%) and efficiency (24.2%) entering the match, the Ignite managed just 34.8% and 18.0% against the Mojo, respectively.
Back in the starting lineup after sitting out a match, Martyn finished with a season-high 12 kills to go along with four blocks and gaudy kill percentage (50.0%) and efficiency (41.7%) numbers. Opposite hitter Azhani Tealer came off the bench for the second time this season, leading Indy with 13 kills in not much more than two sets of playing time. Libero Elena Scott had 14 digs, one shy of her season best. But it all wasn’t enough on this night.
“Sometimes we’re just so focused on what’s going on that maybe we lose sight of working together,” Martyn said. “Like the scramble plays of waiting to see who’s going to make that play or go after a ball or sticking to what our scout was. Maybe we were a little lax there, but ultimately, we’ve just got to make better plays. That comes with making the second touch better, can we be in our positions, can we press on our block when we need to? We’ve just got to do better at that.
“I think we’re a team who manages those out-of-system balls a little better than what we did tonight and I think we can serve a little better,” added Martyn, referring to Indy’s 12 service errors to just two aces. “I think tonight’s serving was just not us.”
The Ignite return home this weekend for a pair of matches at Fishers Event Center. First up is Orlando at 7 p.m. ET Friday on Volleytines Night. A rematch with San Diego awaits at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for all Ignite home matches are available at IndyIgniteVB.com.

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL
HOOSIERS ROLL BEHIND 41 POINTS FROM WILKERSON
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Lamar Wilkerson was on the hunt — 3-pointers, layups, mid-range shots, free throws, shot-clock-hitting-zero turnaround jumpers, even some things, coach Darian DeVries joked, he hadn’t seen before — and it was all good. When Indiana’s veteran guard gets on a roll like this, you find him early and often.
The Hoosiers did, and Wilkerson didn’t disappoint. Not on Monday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Not against an Oregon team tied with Penn State for last place in the Big Ten.
Wilkerson’s 41 points extended a blistering six-game stretch in which he’s totaled 169 points and if it included rare free throw misses — his first two in 25 attempts — no one wearing the Cream ‘n Crimson complained. Not after the 92-74 victory that gave IU (17-8 overall, 8-6 in the Big Ten) five victories in its last six games that bodes well for a special March.
“When he gets going like that,” forward Tucker DeVries said, “it makes things easy for everyone. At that point, it’s get out of the way and let him cook. He does that well. He makes tough shots. It takes a special player to do that.”
Wilkerson scored 10 straight points as part of a 16-point, first-half warmup before his 25-point second-half surge, a scoring barrage fitting for a guy who just won his second co-Big Ten player-of-the-week award after averaging 29.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists as IU split games against USC and Wisconsin.
“It’s just taking the shots that are open and they just kept going in,” Wilkerson said. “It was my teammates finding me; coaches drawing up plays. All that contributes to what went on tonight.”
It was more than that, coach Darian DeVries said.
“As he’s gotten more comfortable with what we’re doing, we’ve challenged him to do more things, including defensively, and he’s accepted it. Now you’re seeing the full package of what he’s able to do. That was as impressive second half perform as I’ve seen. “
Not bad for a guy who opened the game 0-for-5 from the field.
“There was nothing going in my head,” Wilkerson said about the slow start. “You make shots. You miss shots. We try to live on that next-play mentality. One fell and the rest happened.”
Wilkerson wasn’t a one-man team. Forward Sam Alexis continued his own strong recent play with 16 points and five rebounds. Tucker DeVries added 15 points and seven assists. Nick Dorn totaled 11 points.
The Hoosiers shot 60 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3-point range and 78 percent from the line. They had 22 assists against nine turnovers.
Oregon (8-16, 1-12) had no answers.
“Basketball is a game of runs,” Wilkerson said, “and I feel like it’s our run right now. You’d rather be playing your best basketball in March than January.”
It’s a dramatic turnaround from a team that lost four straight January games.
We got a lot of things that we got to go back to the drawing board and fix,” Wilkerson said, “but that just opened our eyes and let us know that, hey, we’ve got to be a lot better to play in this league, get to March Madness and punch that ticket.”
Besides the victory, IU’s 32-0 1976 national championship team was celebrated at halftime as part of a 50th anniversary that also included the announcement that a bronze statue of Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight would be permanently installed at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
“Recognizing the 1976 team was great,” Darian DeVries said. “It was a special night. To see so many able to make it back made it a pretty cool event.”
As for Knight being honored with a statue, Darian DeVries added, “It’s something that is well deserved.”
The game was a reunion for Darian DeVries and Oregon coach Dana Altman, who gave DeVries his first coaching opportunity at Creighton a quarter century ago.
“I have so much love and affection for Coach Altman,” Darian DeVries said. “He’s been so good to me and family. He gave me the start in this profession. It was special to share that sideline moment with him.”
Oregon had pushed Purdue to the limit in Mackey Arena two days earlier and opened at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall with a 6-0 lead. An Alexis hook shot and then a dunk produced IU’s first points after a 0-for-4 shooting start. Tucker DeVries tied it at 6-6 with a pair of free throws, then delivered a 9-8 Hoosier lead with a 3-pointer.
A Conor Enright three-pointer off a Tucker DeVries assist boosted IU ahead 14-12 with 11:13 left in the half. Oregon responded with seven straight points. Wilkerson countered with a 3-pointer off an Alexis assist and a 19-17 Ducks lead. Wilkerson followed with two free throws, a layup and then another 3-pointer, plus grabbed a rebound that turned into a Tucker DeVries basket and a 26-22 Hoosier lead.
Another Wilkerson basket and then two more free throws produced a 36-30 halftime lead. He had 16 points.
IU scored the first four points of the second half to take a 10-point lead. Three-pointers from Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries soon followed. The lead swelled to 16 at 52-36 with 15 minutes remaining and to 20 with six minutes left.
The Ducks were finished.
Now comes a brutal road swing — No. 8/7 Illinois (20-4, 11-2) on Sunday and No. 13/12 Purdue (19-4,, 9-3) on Feb. 20.
“It’s great for us to have a day or two to get our feet back under us, get refocused and get ready for a big road game on Sunday,” Darian DeVries said.
INDIANA PLANS TO BUILD STATUE DEPICTING BOB KNIGHT
Fifty years after he coached the last undefeated men’s Division I basketball team, legendary Indiana coach Bob Knight will be honored with a statue at the program’s Assembly Hall home in Bloomington, Ind., the school announced Monday.
Knight, who died in 2023 at age 83, led the Hoosiers to national titles in 1976, 1981 and 1987. He produced a 662-239 record in 29 seasons at Indiana, getting the program to the Final Four five times and overseeing 11 Big Ten regular-season-title-winning squads.
The university plans to put the next statue next to a set of statues depicting the top six players from the 1975-76 team that went 32-0 — Quinn Buckner, Scott May, Ken Benson, Bobby Wilkerson, Jim Crews and Tom Abernathy.
“Coach Knight’s influence on the game of basketball is immeasurable, but his impact on this university and Hoosier basketball fans is even deeper,” Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson said in a statement. “On a personal level, having started my career here as a student manager under Coach Knight, I saw firsthand the unparalleled standard of excellence he demanded. He taught me, and countless others, that success is the result of meticulous preparation and unwavering discipline. This statue will be a well-deserved tribute to a man who didn’t just win games; he changed how the sport is played.”
Before arriving at Indiana, Knight coached Army to a 102-50 record over six seasons. He left Bloomington after with an impeccable basketball record but after a series of controversies including a chair-throwing incident and numerous instances of alleged bullying behavior inside and outside of the team.
Knight subsequently coached at Texas Tech from 2001–02 to 2007-08, taking the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament four times.
His overall record of 902-371 leaves him as one of college basketball’s winningest coaches.
Knight, who coached the U.S. men’s team to a gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
The bronze statue will be paid for by a private donor, the Indiana athletic department announced.

THE SCENE SETTER
• Purdue’s gauntlet begins in earnest this week as it travels to No. 7-ranked Nebraska for a key Big Ten tilt in the Cornhusker state. The Boilermakers will be playing their fifth road game during their last seven games dating to Jan. 17, and face a Nebraska team that is just one-and-a-half games behind Michigan in the league standings. A win would move Purdue back into the top three in the league race.
• Purdue will end its road stretch on Saturday with a contest at a hot Iowa team, before returning home for three straight games.
THE MATCHUP
• Purdue and Nebraska will meet for the 29th time in series history on Tuesday, with the Boilermakers owning a 21-7 series advantage.
• Purdue is 3-3 in its last six trips to Pinnacle Bank Arena including an 88-72 loss in its last visit to Lincoln (Jan. 2024), when ranked No. 1 in the country.
• Purdue is just 3-2 as a ranked team when visiting Pinnacle Bank Arena, also losing 83-80 in Jan. 2017.
• Tuesday’s meeting marks the first ranked matchup in the 29 meetings between the two teams.
• The magic number for Purdue appears to be 75. When the Boilermakers score 75 points against Nebraska, Purdue is 9-1 during the Painter era.
• Fletcher Loyer has played well against Nebraska, averaging 20.3 points and shooting 16-of-34 (.471) from deep in four career games vs. the Huskers.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Purdue looks for its third straight win and second top-10 win of the season when it travels to Nebraska for a key Big Ten contest on Tuesday night.
• Partnering with the American Heart Association for American Heart Month, both Purdue and Nebraska’s coaching staffs will be wearing pins on Tuesday to raise awareness of cardiovascular health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
• Purdue is looking for its 20th win of the season. In his 21st season, Matt Painter has won 20 games in a season 15 times as the Boilermaker head coach.
• Through Sunday’s games, Purdue is 6-4 in quad-1 games, tied for the fifth-most quad-1 wins in the country behind Duke (10), Michigan (8), Arizona (8) and Houston (7).
• The Boilermakers are 17-4 in the first three quads, the second-most wins in the first three quads nationally (Michigan – 19).
• Of Purdue’s remaining eight games, five of them are currently quad-1 contests (Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State) with two more (Indiana, Northwestern) right on the edge. Wisconsin is currently No. 43 in the NET and will likely be a quad-2 game.
• On the offensive end, Purdue ranks in the top 25 nationally in assist / turnover ratio (1st), offensive efficiency (3rd), assists per game (3rd), field goal percentage (12th), turnovers per game (15th), 3-point percentage (17th) and rebound margin (22nd).
• Top-15 matchups are becoming the norm at Purdue as this will be the 17th top-15 matchup since the start of the 2023-24 season. Purdue is 20-21 under Matt Painter overall in top-15 matchups, but is 11-5 in its last 16 contests, since the start of the 2023-24 season.
• Purdue has been ranked in 73 straight AP Top 25 polls, the second-longest streak in the country behind Houston (120). Duke is third at 58 straight weeks.

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL
IRISH MAKE FIRST TRIP TO DALLAS SINCE 1990
DALLAS – If you are a Notre Dame fan in the Dallas area, Tuesday night is your night, for the men’s basketball team will be making its first trip to Moody Coliseum since 1990. The Fighting Irish (11-13, 2-9) will look to turn things around with a potential big win at SMU (16-7, 5-5) Tuesday night at 7 pm ET on ACC Network
The Irish are fighting to build some momentum this month to claim a spot in the ACC Tournament. They are currently in the clump of five teams with two ACC wins apiece. The big thing for Notre Dame is that they will still play three of the four teams they are tied with: Georgia Tech, Pitt, and Boston College. The other team, Wake Forest, is the one team not on ND’s schedule.
Over the last two weeks, SMU has defeated FSU by three, lost back-to-back games to Louisville and NC State, but then bounced back with an 86-67 win at Pitt. The Mustangs are led by Boopie Miller’s 18.1 points and 6.3 assists per game. He’s shot an efficient 46.4% in league play.
Haslam Analytics breakdown:
SMU is rated 23rd in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 124 points every 100 possessions vs. AO (average opponent). SMU is an outstanding shooting team, capable of converting from a variety of locations on the floor and ranking in the top-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal categories. The long-ball may be their strength (39.4% from three vs. AO, 14th in the nation), but the team also makes 65.1% of their near-proximity shots (31st), 45.0% of their mid-range chances (20th), and 50.5% of their total shots from the field (15th) vs. AO. Defensively, they rank 74th nationally in efficiency.
If successful, Notre Dame would achieve a Quad 1 win with SMU’s NET at 34. It would mark their third Quad 1 win, joining TCU & Stanford. It would also mark their third true road win of the season, tying last year’s mark.
Last year, the Mustangs visited South Bend and left with a 97-73 win. Braeden Shrewsberry finished the evening with a team-best 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor, knocking down 5-8 from deep. In addition, Garrett Sundra tied his career high of 11 points. He was 3-4 from the field, 2-3 from deep and 3-3 from the free-throw line
LAST 2 WEEKS RECAP
FLORIDA STATE
Notre Dame was able to erase an 18-point deficit at home to Florida State, claiming its first lead of the game off a Logan Imes three-pointer with 2:07 remaining. The Seminoles immediately countered with a three, their 15th of the game. Later, the Irish down three with six seconds left, had two cracks at it to tie the game, but both rimmed out as they fell 79-82.
The 15 Florida State three-pointers marked the most drained against the Irish all season. Notre Dame showed plenty of heart in the second half where they outscored Florida State, 47-41, shooting 51.5% from the field.
Braeden Shrewsberry led the Irish with 18 points on his birthday, recording four assists and five rebounds as well. Cole Certa scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half. The two combined for eight made threes. Jalen Haralson also supplied 11 points in the second half, finishing with 15.
VIRGINIA
Let’s start with the 97-100 heartbreaking double overtime loss to #17 Virginia. It was a game in which the Irish tasted victory on multiple occasions: ND built a 19-point first-half lead, fell into a four-point deficit in the second half, rallied back to go up six points with two minutes remaining, had a shot at the end of regulation to walk it off, and then was one defensive stand away at the end of the first overtime.
“Not into moral victories, but we are about the process. We are about using every opportunity to learn and get better,” Glenn & Stacey Murphy Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “These dudes keep coming, keep fighting, keep competing and try to play their best basketball as the season goes on. I wanted this so bad for them with how hard they’re working. They put it out there, all on the line, against a really good team.”
Cole Certa went off with a career high 34 points on 10-19 shooting from the floor, 5-13 from three and 9-11 from the free-throw line. Certa’s 34 points are the most by a Notre Dame player against an AP-ranked team since Nov. 26, 2008, when Kyle McAlarney scored 39 in a loss to No. 1 UNC. His 34 points were also the third most by a Notre Dame player in an ACC game, trailing just Markus Burton (43 vs Cal) and Matt Farrell (37 vs Boston College).
The game also witnessed a tremendous showing from freshman Brady Koehler. The 6-10 forward out of Fishers, Indiana, dropped his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Koehler also recorded a season-high three steals and season-high tying four blocks.
SYRACUSE
At Syracuse on Jan. 31, the Irish just couldn’t get over the hump in the 2nd half, whether it was piecing it together defensively, or a critical error that served as an offensive rally killer.
Case in point, a Certa three-pointer would cut the deficit to eight points, but an Irish technical led to a 5-point Syracuse swing that would balloon into a 14-point Orange lead. Later, another Certa triple brought the Irish within six for the first time since the 11:13 mark of the first half, making it a 60-66 ballgame. Yet the wave of momentum was quickly seized when a Syracuse three at the shot clock buzzer sparked a 9-0 run, resulting in a 15-point deficit.
Jalen Haralson recorded a superb 2nd half, missing only one shot and scoring 19 points. He finished with a career high of 26. He finished with a career high of 26.
LOUISVILLE
Notre Dame showed some grit on the road against a top-25 team, but a late scoring surge from the #24/23 Louisville Cardinals was the difference maker in a 65-76 defeat. The Fighting Irish started hot with an early nine-point lead and trailed by six at the half. Notre Dame fought to pull within four at 9:29, but that’s when the Cardinals produced a 16-1 scoring run.
Cole Certa led the Irish with 18 points, draining five triples on the night. Brady Koehler also secured double-digit points with 11 on 4-10 shooting. The freshman also netted four steals and two blocks.
Coach Shrewsberry:
“I thought we didn’t finish the ball well. We had some turnovers at the wrong opportunities. It doesn’t have to be perfect. We have to take advantage of situations that are advantageous for us.
“The competitive juices were there for us. The competition level was there. We’re doing that, I don’t care about anything else.”
LAST 5 GAME BOX TELL A STORY OF OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT
The Irish offense, which struggled many times to find a groove in January, has shown improvement as of late. What if I told you, without Markus Burton’s 19 ppg, this Irish squad was averaging 76.2 ppg over the last 5 games. In that timespan, Notre Dame’s three-headed monster of Jalen Haralson, Cole Certa and Braeden Shrewsberry are all averaging at least 16 ppg.
Jalen Haralson is currently on the best stretch of his season. The super freshman has totaled 86 points over the last 5 games (17.2 ppg), shooting a hot 57.4% (31-54 FG). He’s also produced a team best 19 assists in that span (3.8 apg)
Jalen highlights include:
- 1st 20-point ACC game with 20 vs. #17 Virginia.
- Followed that with a career high 26 points at Syracuse, with 19 coming in the 2nd half on 6-7 shooting. Not to mention, a dunk worthy of the SportsCenter Top-10
Cole Certa has totaled 82 points over the last 2 weeks (16.4 ppg). Between Cole and Braeden, the two have drained a total of 33 three-pointers in that span.
Cole highlights include:
- Career high 34 points vs #17 Virginia
- 5 made triples at #24 Louisville to total 18 points.
Speaking of Braeden, the junior has amassed 83 points (16.6 ppg) over the last 5 games on 40.6% shooting (28-69 FG).
Braeden highlights include:
- At Syracuse: 17 points behind 3 triples & 3-4 from two.
- #17 Virginia — Scored 15 of his 18 points in the 1st half where he was 4-4 from three, 5-8 overall.
- Team high 18 points vs. FSU.
FRESHMAN STANDOUT JALEN HARALSON
With such a talented ACC freshman class, Notre Dame freshman guard Jalen Haralson has flown a little under the national radar and we are here to sing his praises as to why he should be considered for ACC All-Rookie Team and All-ACC consideration. Haralson is currently averaging 15.2 ppg which ranks fifth amongst ACC freshmen. He’s registered double-digit points in all but three games and has earned five games of 20+ — two in ACC play recently against Virginia & Syracuse.
He averages a team-best 15.7 ppg in ACC play, shooting an efficient 51.2% from the floor – the latter ranks 7th in the league.
Jalen is strong and shifty when attacking the rim, converting 69.5% from within 4.5 feet. The Fishers, Indiana, native shoots 53.0% overall from two-point range, in addition to leading the team in free throw attempts (6.0 per game).
SHREWSBERRY LEADING FROM THREE
Braeden Shrewsberry continues to prove he’s one of the best from deep, ranking 3rd in the ACC in three-point shooting percentage at 41.4%. That number also ranks 29th in the country. He’s converting 2.8 made threes per game, which ranks 4th in the league.
Shrewsberry’s sweet spot? The corner three – where he’s draining 57.9%, which is 22.2% above the Division I average.
Against Miami on Jan. 13, Braeden reached the 200 career made threes milestone, becoming the 14th Irish player all-time to do so. He now sits at 217 in his career.
Braeden has drained 67 threes on the year. For comparison, he recorded 78 as a freshman and 72 in a shortened sophomore campaign.
SEEKING RECORD BOOK #1
Notre Dame fans know Cole Certa can get hot from three and light up the scoreboard in multiple fashions, but I bet they don’t know that the sophomore guard is one of the best free throw shooters in the nation. Certa currently ranks 13th in the country & 1st in the ACC from the stripe.
Certa started the year 27-27 from the free-throw line and is now an impressive 61-67 (91.0%).
If he can keep up this pace from the line, he would rank first all-time for a season at Notre Dame. The current placeholder is Steve Vasturia at 91.0%.
KOEHLER SHOWING HIS POTENTIAL
Freshman Brady Koehler produced a career high 17 points at Virginia Tech, pouring in 15 in the 2nd half. Overall, he was 5-7 from the field, plus 2-3 from three & 5-6 from the stripe. Since that performance, Koehler has started in 6 straight.
Fast forward to Virginia on Jan. 27 and the freshman impressed yet again. Koehler was all over the stat sheet, recording his first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds (career high). He got it done from the free-throw line, where he was a personal best 9-10. He also tied his career high of 4 blocks and set a new high for steals with 3.
Koehler recently had an 11-point showing at #24 Louisville, where he went 2-5 from three, recorded 4 blocks & set a new high in steals with 4.
Koehler is shooting 50.0% from two-point range, but he’s been at his best in the midrange, where he’s 53.3%.
Lastly, Koehler is averaging 7.3 points in ACC play on 44.6% shooting, plus 9-24 (37.5%) from three.
NOTRE NOTABLES
- The Irish are 11 wins away from 2,000 all-time. They would become the eighth program to achieve this feat.
- Certa is averaging a team-best 17.3 ppg against ranked opposition.
- 3 Irish average double figures in ACC play: Haralson (15.7), Certa (12.9) & Shrewsberry (11.5).
- NET is at 89 — 2-10 in Quad 1 // 1-1 in Quad 2// 2-1 in Quad 3 / 6-1 in Quad 4.
- KenPom is at 83 — ORtg ranked 95 at 113.7 — DRtg ranked 83 at 104.2.
- Haslam Metrics on Notre Dame’s defense: ranked 96th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 106 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Notre Dame does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 16th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 11.33, they’re 25th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well. Notre Dame has also had some success this season preventing opponents from converting many of their overall field goal attempts. The team ranks #63 nationally in field goal percentage allowed, as AO only makes good on about 41.9% of their total attempts from the floor.

IU INDY MEN’S BASKETBALL
JAGUARS TO CONTINUE HOMESTAND AGAINST MILWAUKEE ON TUESDAY
INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team will host Milwaukee (9-17, 5-10 HL) on Tuesday night (Feb. 10) inside the Jungle at 6:30 p.m. The game was originally slated for Feb. 28, but was moved up due to the Jaguars’ postponement of the Purdue Fort Wayne game on Jan. 25.
The Jaguars come in on the heels of an 82-74 home win over Cleveland State, stopping the Vikings’ five-game winning streak in the process. Junior Kyler D’Augustino led five Jaguars in double-digits with 16 points and sophomore Micah Davis added 15 points off the bench. Senior Jaxon Edwards collected his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds and senior Finley Woodward closed with 10 points and eight assists. Included in Woodward’s 10-point effort was the 1,000th point of his collegiate career, coming midway through the second half.
IU Indy (6-18, 3-11 HL) seeks to avenge an earlier loss to Milwaukee after falling to the Panthers on the road back on Jan. 11, 95-83. D’Augustino led the Jaguars with 24 points in that contest and freshman Maguire Mitchell added 19 points and six rebounds. The Jags led 43-41 at the break but yielded 54 second half points to the Panthers in the 12-point loss. The game was tied at 75 all with 6:07 to play before Milwaukee reeled off a decisive 12-1 run to take control of the contest late.
QUOTABLE
“I believe it’s starting to build on some momentum. Previously we had won two out of three games in our schedule. Then recently when Kyler went down with an injury I think it held us back a little bit. Kyler is a big influence for our team – not just scoring, but he’s a great leader as well. I think that set us back a little bit with our recent loss, but now that we have him back, I believe we can really go on a run for the rest of the season. I think we’re starting to click at the right time. We are starting to build some more team chemistry, which is always important,” Woodward said following Saturday’s win over Cleveland State.
SCOUTING MKE
Milwaukee is 9-17 overall and 5-10 in Horizon League play this season. The Panthers have been riddled by injuries with three players lost for the season and eight different players having missed time at some point during the season. The Panthers score 76 points per game and shooting 44 percent overall and 32 percent from three-point range. Below is a look at Milwaukee’s possible starting five.
G Amar Augillard (6-5, R-Sr.) – 12.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg
G Josh Dixon (6-1, Fr.) – 10.0 ppg, 1.2 rpg
G Stevie Elam (6-3, Fr.) – 9.3 ppg, 35.0 3FG%
G Aaron Franklin (6-5, R-Sr.) – 6.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg
F Faizon Fields (6-10, Grad.) – 7.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg
INSIDE THE SERIES
IU Indy is just 6-20 all-time against Cleveland State and 4-7 in the 11 meetings in Indianapolis. Milwaukee has won the last 11 meetings in the series, including a 95-83 victory in Milwaukee back on Jan. 11 of this season.
UP NEXT
The Jaguars will conclude the three-game homestand on Thursday (Feb. 12) when they host Northern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. inside the Jungle.

BALL STATE MEN’S GOLF
SORRELL, JOHNSTON, MAHONEY SHINE IN OPENING ROUNDS OF LAKE JOVITA INVITATIONAL
DADE CITY, Fla. — Brody Sorrell’s 7-under par second round was the best round of the day at the Lake Jovita Invitational, Monday on the South Course at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The Ball State freshman turned in the second-best round by a freshman in program history, relative to par, and the Cardinals’ best since Kash Bellar shot 8-under in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in September 2021. Sorrell’s outstanding second round marked just the 11th time a Ball State golfer has ever shot -7 or better in a single round.
Through two rounds, Sorrell stands tied in fifth place with Ball State teammate Luke Johnston. Just a year ago, the two were teammates at Evansville North High School. Sorrell (74-65–139) shot 2-over par in the first round, before firing the lowest round of his college career thus far. Johnston (70-69–139) was steady at -2 and -3, respectively. The freshmen led Ball State in Round 2 after junior Avery Mahoney (69-77–146) fired a 3-under 69 in the opening round. Another junior, transfer Cameron Young (73-71–144), is even after rounds of +1 and -1.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, though, Sorrell is participating in this tournament as an individual competitor. Currently 10 strokes behind tournament leader Xavier, eighth place Ball State might be in better position for title contention were the hot-swinging Sorrell on the lineup card.
Remarkably, Sorrell’s stellar Round 2 featured three bogeys including back-to-back holes! He opened the round with a birdie on the 13th hole. He then bogeyed #15 and #18, around a pair of birdies on #16 and #17. He caught fire on the front nine, but not after he opened with another bogey on #1. He proceeded to shoot birdie, though, on five consecutive holes — #3 through #7 — and when he returned to the back nine, he birdied the 10th and 11th holes.
In all, Sorrell recorded 10 birdies in his remarkable round. He handled a par-3 12th hole to finish his round, just one stroke off the Cardinals’ program record, relative to par.
Play resumes on the par-72, 7,121-yard track on Tuesday morning.
Ball State Results at the Lake Jovita Invitational (through Round 2):
T5th | Luke Johnston, Fr. – 35-35–70; 34-35–69 | 139 (-5)

CASEY AND BERRIDGE POST CAREER EFFORTS IN WIN OVER REDBIRDS
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – AJ Casey and Kaia Berridge set their career scoring marks as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team defeated Illinois State by a final score of 88-80 on Monday at the Ford Center.
Casey scored 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting while Berridge registered 14 points connecting on 4 of his 5 outside attempts. Bryce Quinet scored 17 points on the night while Leif Moeller picked up his first collegiate double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
“We were close to putting together a full 40 minutes tonight and played our tails off,” UE head coach David Ragland said following the victory. “Just really proud of our group for being resilient and staying the course. We were short-handed tonight but found a way to win.”
Illinois State had the early momentum, connecting on their opening four shot attempts, including three from outside, to take an 11-4 lead in the opening two minutes. Evansville knocked down three of its opening four tries to keep it close at 11-6. Four more by the Redbirds pushed their lead to 15-6.
Evansville made its first rally at that point as Alex Hemenway and AJ Casey connected on consecutive triples to get within three. ISU temporarily halted the run with a basket before the Aces continued to storm back. Leif Moeller converted his first triple of the game before Bryce Quinet tied the game with 13:43 remaining with a layup.
Casey scored the next seven points for UE to push the lead to 24-19 entering the final 11 minutes of the half. The Aces hit six consecutive baskets during the run. After trailing 15-6, UE outscored ISU by an 18-4 margin to take the lead. Over the final minutes of the half, the Aces added their advantage. With 4:18 on the clock, Evansville completed an 8-0 run to go up 35-22. Kaia Berridge knocked down two triples during the stretch.
Moeller’s third 3-pointer of the half gave the Aces their largest lead at 45-29 inside the final minute before ISU’s Landon Moore hit a triple with a second remaining to make it a 45-32 contest at the break. UE shot 63.0% in the first half including 72.7% (8-11) from long range. After opening the game going 4-for-4 from the field, the Redbirds were 7-of-24 for the remainder of the half. Casey led all players with 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
After the Redbirds posted the first basket of the second half, the Aces scored eight in a row to take their largest lead of 19 points at 53-34. Quinet’s first triple of the night capped the run while Alex Hemenway hit three free throws. With 16:07 remaining, ISU cut the deficit to 12 points (53-41) before UE extended the lead back to 19 points (66-47) inside the 12-minute mark.
As the second half passed its midway point, another run by Illinois State closed the deficit to 10. Two more triples by Moore made it a 70-60 game with 8:33 left. The Aces held strong as they slowly matched the 19-point lead thanks to a pair of Trent Hundley free throws with 3:57 left.
Just when it looked like the Aces would cruise to the easy victory holding an 86-67 lead, the Redbirds staged a furious rally. Hitting four consecutive triples, ISU made It an 86-79 game entering the final 90 seconds. UE was able to regroup and finish with the 88-80 victory.
The Aces shot a season-high 56.9% while matching its season mark with 14 made triples. Illinois State shot 49.2% in the contest. Evansville shot 55.7% from outside marking the highest percentage UE shot in a game since hitting 80% of its attempts at Bowling Green in 2017. VALPO MEN’S GOLF
MEN’S GOLF PLAYS FIRST DAY OF SPRING SEASON
The Valparaiso University men’s golf team got its spring season underway on Monday as Ryan Somerville paced the team over the first 36 holes at the two-day, 54-hole Lake Jovita Invitational, co-hosted by Ball State and Richmond at the par-72, 7121-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
How It Happened
Somerville had a strong opening round by carding a 71 before finishing Round 2 with a 76. His two-round score of 147 sits tied for 47th in the 88-player field. He had eight birdies over the two rounds.
Valpo’s second-best score on Day 1 was from Adam Melliere, who had the team’s best Round-2 score with a 72 after a 76 in Round 1. He finished the day at 148.
Third on the team was Elliot Lee at 150 (73-77).
The Beacons are 14th on the team leaderboard at 595 (300-295). Xavier leads the tournament at 567, while Richmond’s Carson Baez holds the top individual spot at nine under.
Thoughts from Head Coach Dave Gring
“While we always come into the first tournament of the year with a lot of excitement and ready to set the world on fire, we typically have some rust to kick off and a playing rhythm that we are trying to attain. The guys have prepared well this winter, but we had our struggles in scoring around the greens and making putts. Our putting speed and green reading wasn’t good today, with too many 3-putts and missing a good amount of putts inside of five feet. There’s some decent green complexes here at Lake Jovita, but nothing that is too challenging to navigate.”
“The second area that we had our challenges was off of the tee. The number of fairways that we hit was poor, and there were numerous times that we had to punch-out to recover. We only had 11 birdies in the second round, following 14 in the first round. We’re going to need to improve this part of the game well tomorrow to give us better proximity to the hole and more birdie opportunities.”
“In closing, we had some bright spots amongst our players. Elliot putted well in the first round, with 27 putts for the round. He had three birdies and a number of good saves for par. Adam hit 16 out of 18 greens in regulation in the second round. His strokes gained approach was much improved from the first round, with a lot of good iron shots. We are looking forward to tomorrow and finishing the tournament with our best team score.”
Up Next
The third and final round of the event will take place on Tuesday.

VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL
FRESHMEN SHINE AS VALPO SECURES FIRST WIN AT DRAKE SINCE 2018
Check another accomplishment off the list for the ever-improving and now-surging Valparaiso University men’s basketball team.
The Beacons used a true team effort to knock off Drake 81-76 on Monday night in Des Moines, Iowa, securing the program’s first road win over the Bulldogs since 2018.
Valpo, which has now won back-to-back games and three of its last four, received 23 points from freshman JT Pettigrew (Lisle, Ill. / Bolingbrook) and 20 from fellow rookie Rakim Chaney (Rockford, Ill. / Rockford Auburn [212 Sports Academy]). Another freshman made the biggest plays down the stretch, as the defense and rebounding of Sader Servilus (Montreal, Quebec, Canada / Fort Erie International Academy) helped put the Beacons over the top, as he shut down the league’s leading scorer over the final few minutes. Four freshmen were on the court for the Beacons down the stretch, and veteran Brody Whitaker (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle [University of Indianapolis / Marian]) made big plays late as well.
How It Happened
It was raining 3s early from Valpo freshman Chaney as he dialed it up from distance and swished it through on three straight possessions, creating a single-handed 9-0 run that put the Beacons ahead 13-5 and forced a Drake timeout with 16:06 left in the opening half.
Drake fought back to within four at 18-14 at the under -12 media timeout despite a possession where the Beacons racked up four fouls on Drake before finishing on a dunk by Carter Hopoi (Tauranga, New Zealand [Mount Maunganui College NZ]).
Pettigrew heated up by accounting for three straight Beacon baskets.
Drake’s Jalen Quinn continued to fill it up early. His basket tied the game at 24 with 7:41 on the first-half clock, with Quinn accounting for 12 of the 24. He eventually finished the game with 33 points.
Drake made seven of nine field-goal attempts during a stretch where Quinn continued to score at a high clip, but the Beacons kept it close, down just three at 35-32 at the under-4 media timeout.
Chaney made his fourth bucket of the first half with 34 seconds left until halftime, helping Valpo get within two at the break at 40-38. Offensive rebounds helped the Drake cause in the first half as they had seven offensive boards despite missing only 14 shots. Both teams shot at least 50 percent in the first half.
A step-back 3 by Owen Dease (Evansville, Ind. / Evansville Reitz [Texas A&M Corpus Christi]) tied the game early in the second half, and then an impressive traditional 3-point play by Pettigrew put Valpo ahead 48-45. The two teams were level at 50 with 15:27 on the clock.
Valpo experienced a cold stretch, missing six out of seven shots, and Drake scored 10 of the next 13 points to build up a 60-53 lead with 11:54 remaining in regulation. A Chaney 3 accounted for the Beacon bucket during that stretch, his fourth triple.
Chaney hit his fifth three of the game just before the 10-minute mark of the half, shrinking the Drake lead to three at 60-57.
Pettigrew collected an errant pass and pulled off another impressive finish despite being fouled, pulling Valpo within two at 64-62 with 7:55 to play.
Pettigrew had another finish despite being fouled that put Valpo up 67-66 with 6:48 to play. Drake regained the lead and built it to four, but Whitaker drained two free throws to make it a two-point game with four minutes to go.
Whitaker hit a big jumper to tie the game at 72 with 3:30 on the clock, then another one that leveled the score at 74 with 2:20 left. The veteran poise continued to play a big role when he made two free throws to once again tie it with 1:48 left.
Pettigrew hit a go-ahead 3 with 1:08 left that made it 79-76. Valpo finished the game on a 7-0 run including two game-clinching free throws by Servilus with 11 seconds left after he had secured a monster defensive rebound on the other end. Servilus’ defense on Quinn in the final few minutes played a huge role in the outcome.
Inside the Game
Valpo has surpassed last season’s conference win total, making this the best season in league play under head coach Roger Powell Jr.
The Beacons moved to within two wins of matching Valpo’s highest league win total since joining the Missouri Valley Conference.
The win on Monday snapped an eight-game head-to-head losing streak, as the Beacons beat the Bulldogs for the first time since 2021 and first time at Drake since 2018.
Valpo owns a winning record through 25 games for the first time since 2018-2019 (also 13-12).
The Beacons own a .500 or better record through exactly 14 Missouri Valley Conference games for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2017-2018 campaign.
Pettigrew’s 23 points represented a career high, surpassing his previous best of 21 reached against UIC (Jan. 4) and Illinois State (Jan. 7). His 12 rebounds tied a personal best set on Jan. 13 at Belmont.
Pettigrew’s double-double was his team-leading fourth of the season. He was 8-of-11 from the floor with seven of the eight makes coming inside the arc. He added two blocks to his impressive stat line.
Chaney finished with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, his highest scoring output in league play and highest since scoring 23 on Jan. 19 at Cleveland State. He drained a career-high five 3s. Chaney’s six rebounds marked his highest total in league play.
After missing the previous game due to an injury, Whitaker tallied 13 points, his second-highest total in league play.
Servilus squeezed a career-high seven rebounds in just nine minutes of action.
Dease made it four Beacons in double figures with 10 points, his fifth straight game in double figures.
The Beacons outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-34 and shot at a 50 percent clip from the floor and 40.9 percent from 3. Drake was held to 25.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Up Next
Valpo (13-12, 7-7 MVC) will finish out a stretch of playing four out of five on the road by visiting Illinois State for a 6 p.m. tip on Thursday. The game will be televised regionally on the MVC TV Network through Gray Media.

So winning our conference is a big deal. It’s very difficult, but it prepares us well for Nationals.”
