COLLEGE FOOTBALL

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 16 TEXAS A&M RALLIES LATE TO EDGE NO. 8 NOTRE DAME

Nate Boerkircher caught a go-ahead 11-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds to go, and No. 16 Texas A&M held on for a 41-40 win over No. 8 Notre Dame in a Saturday night thriller in South Bend, Ind.

Marcel Reed completed 17 of 37 passes for 360 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Texas A&M (3-0). Le’Veon Moss rushed for three touchdowns for the Aggies, who knocked off a ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 2014, ending a 13-game skid.

CJ Carr completed 20 of 32 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown and one interception for Notre Dame (0-2). Jadarian Price (68 rushing yards) ran for two touchdowns and Jeremiyah Love (94 rushing yards, 53 receiving yards) notched one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.

The score was tied at 34-all when Love burst across the goal line for a 12-yard rushing score with 2:53 to go. The Fighting Irish lined up for an extra-point attempt but holder Tyler Buchner fumbled the snap and threw an errant pass to keep the score at 40-34.

That left the door open for Texas A&M to put together the game-winning drive.

No. 1 Ohio State 37, Ohio 9

Julian Sayin threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns to help the Buckeyes overcome their red-zone flubs and defeat the Bobcats in Columbus on Saturday.

The Buckeyes reached the red zone on each of their first three possessions, but managed just six points on those trips. With OSU leading just 16-9 in the third quarter, Sayin created separation with touchdown passes to Jeremiah Smith (nine catches for 153 yards) and Carnell Tate (five catches for 101).

Bobcats quarterback Parker Navarro was injured early in the second quarter but returned on the first drive of the third quarter, and on the second play back threw a 67-yard touchdown to Chase Hendricks. He finished the game 6 of 13 for 94 yards.

No. 2 Penn State 52, Villanova 6

Nicholas Singleton ran for two touchdowns and Drew Allar threw for 209 yards and a touchdown as the Nittany Lions cruised against the visiting Wildcats.

Allar finished 16-of-29, Kaytron Allen ran for a team-high 86 yards and Singleton ran 20 times for 84 yards for the Nittany Lions (3-0), while Trebor Pena chipped in 60 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches.

Villanova quarterbacks Pat McQuaide and Tanner Maddocks combined to go 13-of-27 for 96 yards with an interception each. Maddocks got the Wildcats (1-1) on the scoreboard with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Binkowski on the final play of the game.

No. 3 LSU 20, Florida 10

Garrett Nussmeier threw a touchdown pass, Dashawn Spears returned one of five Tigers interceptions for a touchdown in a victory over the Gators in Baton Rouge, La.

Nussmeier completed 15 of 27 passes for 220 yards with an interception, and LSU (3-0, 1-0 SEC) managed just 316 total yards and 10 first downs, but that was good enough because of the defense.

DJ Lagway threw all five of the interceptions, completing 33 of 49 for 287 yards and a touchdown for the Gators (1-2, 0-1). Florida reached the Tigers’ territory on seven possessions, but four of them ended with interceptions.

No. 4 Oregon 34, Northwestern 14

Quarterback Dante Moore completed 16 of 20 passes for 178 yards with a touchdown, helping the Ducks defeat the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill.

Jayden Limar and two other running backs added touchdown runs for the Ducks (3-0). Oregon’s prolific offense was slowed somewhat by the Wildcats’ efforts to run the ball often to try to control the game clock and keep the high-scoring Ducks off the field, but Northwestern (1-2) didn’t get much going on offense until the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt.

The Ducks defense forced two turnovers on downs and had two takeaways on interceptions, one for linebacker Bryce Boettcher that led to Limar’s first quarter touchdown. Ducks running back Dierre Hill Jr. took his first carry of the game 66 yards for a touchdown, while Dashun Reeder had a 79-yarder late in the fourth for the Wildcats.

No. 5 Miami 49, No. 18 South Florida 12

Carson Beck threw three touchdown passes and Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for two more to lead the Hurricanes to a victory over the Bulls in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The Hurricanes (3-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of touchdown passes from Beck to Joshua Moore. Fletcher ran for 120 yards on 16 carries while Beck completed 23 of 28 passes for 340 yards and threw his first two interceptions at Miami.

USF (2-1) quarterback Byrum Brown completed 20 of 36 passes for 274 yards, one touchdown on a 12-yard connection with Christian Neptune, and one interception. The Bulls cut the deficit to 14-6 before a weather delay that lasted nearly two hours before the Hurricanes pulled away for a 28-6 halftime lead.

No. 6 Georgia 44, No. 15 Tennessee 41 (OT)

Josh McCray ran in the game-winning 1-yard touchdown in overtime to give the visiting Bulldogs a win in Knoxville — their ninth straight win over the Volunteers.

Gunner Stockton threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns and added another on the ground for Georgia (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) while Joey Aguilar threw for 371 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions for Tennessee (2-1, 0-1), which had its best chance to score its first win over Georgia since 2016. Chris Brazzell II had six catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

After Max Gilbert — who had missed a potential go-ahead 43-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation — made a 42-yard field goal to begin overtime, Nate Frazier ran for 21 yards to begin Georgia’s possession. Two plays later, McCray broke the plane of the end zone to win the game.

No. 7 Texas 27, UTEP 10

Arch Manning overcame some early struggles, scoring on a pair of first-half touchdown runs and adding a short touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as the Longhorns did enough to beat the Miners in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns’ much ballyhooed quarterback completed only 11 of his 25 passes for 114 yards and was intercepted once. Even with Manning’s struggles, Texas (2-1) was too much for the Miners. The Longhorns finished with a 340-259 edge in total yardage, with 226 of Texas’ yards coming on the ground.

Malachi Nelson passed for 209 yards to lead UTEP (1-2), which has never beaten Texas in seven games between the teams.

No. 9 Illinois 38, Western Michigan 0

Luke Altmyer threw for two touchdowns and rushed for a score while Kaden Feagin added 100 rushing yards and a score as the Illini pulled away from the visiting Broncos in Champaign.

After scoring just 10 first-half points, the Illini pulled away by scoring on their first three possessions of the second half on a Feagin 3-yard run, an Altmyer 2-yard run and an Altmyer 6-yard pass to Ashton Hollins.

Western Michigan outgained Illinois in the first half, but managed just 71 second-half yards. The Broncos played two quarterbacks but neither could get them into the end zone. Broc Lowry completed 10 of 16 passes for 78 yards, while Brady Jones was 3 of 8 for 13 yards. The Illini notched three sacks and recorded nine tackles for loss.

Vanderbilt 31, No. 11 South Carolina 7

Diego Pavia completed 18 of 25 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns to help the Commodores post an impressive upset in Columbia, SC., over the host Gamecocks, who lost star quarterback LaNorris Sellers to injury.

Pavia also threw an interception for the Commodores (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference), who snapped a 16-game losing streak against South Carolina, earning their first win over the Gamecocks since September 2008.

Sedrick Alexander ran 13 times for 41 yards and a score for Vanderbilt, which won its conference opener for the first time since 2011.

Sellers — a potential Heisman Trophy candidate — exited in the second quarter and did not return after taking a hit to the head from Langston Patterson. Sellers was 6-for-7 passing with 94 yards and an interception before the hit, which earned Patterson an ejection for targeting.

Georgia Tech 24, No. 12 Clemson 21

Aidan Birr hit a 55-yard field goal as time expired to help the Yellow Jackets upset the Tigers in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Haynes King completed 20 of 28 passes for 211 yards and added 101 yards and a score on the ground for Georgia Tech (3-0, 1-0 ACC).

The Sooners (3-0) outgained the Owls 515-104, holding Temple to just 26 yards rushing. Oklahoma had 29 first downs to just seven for the Owls. Isaiah Sategna led the Sooners with seven catches for 97 yards.

Temple (2-1) quarterback Evan Simon came into the game leading the nation in passing efficiency but was just 13 of 25 for 75 yards in the loss.

No. 14 Iowa State 24, Arkansas State 16

Rocco Becht was 14-of-25 passing for 265 yards, a touchdown and an interception to help the Cyclones escape with a win over the Red Wolves in Jonesboro, Ark.

Carson Hansen rushed for 116 yards on 18 carries and Xavier Townsend caught three passes for 92 yards to lead Iowa State (4-0), which rushed for 187 yards and had 452 total yards. Abu Sama’s fourth-quarter touchdown gave the Cyclones some cushion after a pair of field goals had cut their lead to just one point.

Jaylen Raynor went 19-of-33 passing for 222 yards and one interception and also rushed for 83 yards and a score on 16 carries to lead Arkansas State (1-2), which got to the brink of the end zone late in the fourth quarter before turning it over on downs. ASU kicker Clune Van Andel was 3-for-3 on field goals.

No. 17 Ole Miss 41, Arkansas 35

Trinidad Chambliss passed for 353 yards and one touchdown and rushed for two scores in his first major college start to help the Rebels win a shootout against the Razorbacks in Southeastern Conference play at Oxford, Miss.

Chambliss drew the start because Austin Simmons is dealing with an ankle injury. The transfer from Division II Ferris State completed 21 of 29 passes and rushed for 62 yards on 15 attempts for the Rebels (3-0, 2-0 SEC). Harrison Wallace III caught six passes for 92 yards and one touchdown for Ole Miss. De’Zhaun Stribling also caught a scoring pass and Kewan Lacy ran for one for the Rebels.

Ryan Williams returned from a one-game absence due to a concussion to make five catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns for Alabama (2-1). Germie Bernard also scored two touchdowns — one receiving, one rushing — as Alabama coasted to its second straight victory.

Vinny Anthony II returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown for Wisconsin (2-1). Danny O’Neill again started in place of injured Billy Edwards Jr. (knee) and completed 11 of 17 passes for 117 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

No. 20 Utah 31, Wyoming 6

Devon Dampier threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns to help the Utes pull away in the second half for a victory over the Cowboys in Laramie.

Dampier added 86 yards on the ground, pacing a third straight game for the Utes with at least 200 rushing yards. Utah (3-0) finished with a season-high 311 rushing yards and averaged 6.9 yards per carry. For the Utes, it was their highest single-game total on the ground since churning out 352 rushing yards in a 55-3 win over Arizona State in 2023.

Kaden Anderson threw for 108 yards and an interception for Wyoming, which suffered its fifth straight loss to Utah and ninth in the last 10th meetings between the two former conference rivals. The Cowboys (2-1) committed two turnovers and avoided a shutout on Terron Kellerman’s 15-yard run with 4:23 left.

No. 21 Texas Tech 45, Oregon State 14

A lengthy lightning delay couldn’t hinder the high-powered offensive attack of the Red Raiders and Behren Morton as they stumped the struggling Beavers in Lubbock, Texas.

Morton had a career day, finishing with a career-high 464 yards in three quarters. He added four touchdown passes and completed 23 of his 35 attempts with an interception as the only blemish. Coy Eakin and Terrance Carter Jr. torched the Oregon State secondary, with Eakin finishing with six catches for 139 yards and Carter Jr. hauling in six as well for 102 yards. They had a touchdown apiece.

After a nearly two-and-a-half hour lightning delay that paused the game after six plays, Morton came out firing for the Red Raiders (3-0) on the third play back with a perfectly thrown ball in the corner of the end zone to Eakin for 38 yards as the Red Raiders would build a 45-0 lead over the Beavers (0-3).

No. 23 Michigan 63, Central Michigan 3

Bryce Underwood was 16-of-25 passing for 235 yards, a touchdown and an interception to lead the Wolverines to a rout of the in-state foe Chippewas in Ann Arbor. Underwood also was effective with his legs, rushing for 114 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

No. 25 Missouri 52, Louisiana 10

Hardy scored on runs of 7, 71 and 7 yards for the Tigers (3-0), while quarterback Beau Pribula threw for 174 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, two through the air. Backup running back Marquise Davis added 113 yards and a score on 20 carries as Missouri outgained the Ragin’ Cajuns 606-121.

Most of Louisiana’s offense came on one play, an 84-yard touchdown run in the second quarter by Zylan Perry. The Ragin’ Cajuns (1-2) used two quarterbacks and neither was effective. Starter Daniel Beale hit 1 of 8 passes for 5 yards and backup Lunch Winfield was 1 of 6 for minus-1 yard.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

MLB ROUNDUP: BREWERS CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH, THEN DOWN CARDS IN 10

Caleb Durbin ripped a game-tying RBI double in the 10th inning, then scored the winner on Andruw Monasterio’s single as the host Milwaukee Brewers topped the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 on Saturday.

The Brewers celebrated their 11th walk-off victory of the season hours after they officially clinched their seventh postseason berth in eight years with the New York Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

After Jordan Walker scored on a double-play groundout in the top of the 10th inning, Durbin forged an 8-8 tie with a double into the left-center field gap. Monasterio then capped a 10-pitch at-bat against Kyle Leahy (4-2) with a single to center. Abner Uribe (3-2) got the win after allowing the 10th-inning run on no hits and one walk.

Milwaukee’s William Contreras had an RBI infield single to cap a three-run outburst in the ninth. He had three RBIs and Sal Frelick drove in two runs for the Brewers, who trailed by five entering the bottom of the sixth. St. Louis’ Ivan Herrera homered to highlight a three-hit performance and Brendan Donovan also went deep. Thomas Saggese had an RBI single among his three hits for the Cardinals, who have lost five in a row.

Mariners 5, Angels 3

Bryan Woo posted his American League-leading 21st quality start of the season and struck out a career-high 13 batters as surging Seattle defeated visiting Los Angeles.

J.P. Crawford homered as the Mariners won their eighth in a row to remain tied with Houston atop the AL West and two games ahead of Texas for the league’s third and final wild-card berth. Jo Adell and Taylor Ward went deep for the Angels, who lost their third in a row.

Woo (14-7) pitched six innings and gave up two runs on three hits with one walk. The right-hander retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Rays 5, Cubs 4

Nick Fortes hit a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth inning and Tampa Bay held on to beat host Chicago.

Bryan Baker (4-4) picked up the win in relief, and Pete Fairbanks collected his 26th save with a scoreless ninth despite the tying run getting to third with no outs. Junior Caminero had two hits for the Rays, including his 43rd homer. Fortes, Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz also had two hits. Starter Drew Rasmussen went five innings, giving up four hits and three runs, with five strikeouts.

Cubs rookie Moises Ballesteros hit his first major league home run in the second inning. Chicago celebrated Anthony Rizzo with a retirement ceremony before the game, and the former Cubs first baseman was visiting with fans in the left field bleachers when Ballesteros’ home run came to him, bouncing off his hand to the fan behind him. Michael Busch also homered, his 27th. Brad Keller (4-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up Fortes’ home run.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 4

Alejandro Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run ninth to help Toronto defeat visiting Baltimore.

Kirk, who had an RBI single as a pinch hitter in the eighth, hit the decisive fly to center against Yennier Cano (3-7). Addison Barger hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays (86-62). Toronto starter Max Scherzer was tagged for two runs in the first inning, but followed that up with four scoreless innings of work.

Coby Mayo homered and Gunnar Henderson and Samuel Basallo had RBI doubles to help the Orioles, who also got six one-run innings of work from starter Tomoyoki Sugano.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 3

Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to help lift visiting New York to a win over Boston.

The Yankees scored twice in the first inning and never relinquished a 4-0 lead it had built by the fifth inning. Cody Bellinger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a two-out double high off the Green Monster to drive home an important insurance run against Red Sox reliever Aroldis Chapman, who allowed a run for the second straight outing. Aaron Judge (2-for-3, two runs) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch to set up the RBI opportunity. Max Fried (17-5) allowed just two runs despite allowing nine hits across 5 1/3 innings.

Alex Bregman and Duran both homered for Boston, while Nate Eaton, Nick Sogard and Connor Wong each had two hits.

Phillies 8, Royals 6

Brandon Marsh drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber belted his 51st homer to highlight Philadelphia’s win over visiting Kansas City.

With their ninth win in 10 games, the Phillies lowered their magic number to one to clinch the National League East. They are two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top overall seed in the NL postseason.

Salvador Perez hit two home runs for the Royals, giving him 300 for his career, and drove in three runs, pushing his career total to 1,000. Kansas City has lost six of its last seven games and will try to avoid a three-game sweep on Sunday.

Rangers 3, Mets 2

Wyatt Langford hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Edwin Diaz with two outs in the ninth inning as surging Texas rallied past host New York, whose losing streak reached a season-worst eight games.

The Rangers tied a season high by winning six straight for the fourth time and improved to 7-48 when trailing through seven. Phil Maton (4-5) got the final out of the eighth after Chris Martin suffered an apparent injury. Shawn Armstrong later allowed a single to pinch hitter Ronny Mauricio but fanned Brandon Nimmo to finish his ninth save and strand two.

Before Texas rallied, Juan Soto became the fifth player in Mets history to hit at least 40 homers in a season. Soto joined Pete Alonso (2019, 2022, 2023), Carlos Beltran (2006), Todd Hundley (1996) and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza (1999) as the fifth player in team history with a 40-homer season.

Diamondbacks 5, Twins 2 (10 innings)

Alek Thomas hit a two-run homer, Blaze Alexander doubled and drove in a pair and Arizona outlasted Minnesota in Minneapolis after the game was tied at 2 through nine innings.

Gabriel Moreno also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who evened the series at one victory apiece with the rubber match set for Sunday. Geraldo Perdomo finished 2-for-4. Right-hander John Curtiss (3-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed one hit, walked none and struck out two.

Kody Clemens went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Twins. Right-hander Cole Sands (4-5) gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits in one inning. He took the loss after picking up the victory in the series opener.

Guardians 3, White Sox 1

Parker Messick won his third straight decision to begin his career and CJ Kayfus and Jhonkensy Noel each homered as Cleveland beat visiting Chicago.

The victory allowed the Guardians to pull within 3 1/2 games of the third and final American League wild-card spot, currently shared by the West Division co-leading Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners.

Messick (3-0) struck out four over six innings, giving up one run on seven hits with a walk. He is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two home starts. Kayfus belted a two-run homer in his second straight game, taking Davis Martin (6-10) deep in the second.

Padres 11, Rockies 3

Manny Machado homered for the second straight game, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Bryce Johnson also went deep, and San Diego topped visiting Colorado.

Machado, Tatis, Elias Diaz and Luis Arraez finished with two hits each for the Padres. Arraez left the game after he was hit with a warmup throw as he jogged onto the field to field his position at the start of the ninth inning.

Dylan Cease (8-11) gave up a run on five hits and one walk and struck out six in six innings for San Diego. Tyler Freeman doubled twice and singled and Jordan Beck had two hits for Colorado, which has lost 18 of its last 22 games. The Rockies need just one win in their last 13 games to avoid tying the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the most losses in the modern era.

Dodgers 13, Giants 7

Shohei Ohtani launched his 49th home run, Teoscar Hernandez and Ben Rortvedt contributed two-run doubles in a six-run fifth inning and a classic pitching matchup of Clayton Kershaw against Logan Webb turned into a slugfest as visiting Los Angeles pounded San Francisco.

Kershaw was touched for four runs in three innings and Webb for six runs in four-plus frames in a game that saw the Dodgers retain their 2 1/2-game lead over the San Diego Padres atop the National League West, while the Giants missed out on an opportunity to move past the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race.

After San Francisco countered a Los Angeles tally in the top of the inning with four runs in the last of the first, a majority of the night’s fireworks were shot off by the visitors, who totaled 17 hits. Ohtani’s homer to center field leading off the third was the loudest blow of the evening, a 454-foot bomb that not only was the longest by a Dodger this season but also the longest at Oracle Park in 2025.

Pirates 5, Nationals 1

Andrew McCutchen and Nick Yorke each hit two-out, two-run singles with two outs in the eighth inning to lift visiting Pittsburgh to a win against Washington, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Jared Triolo added a solo homer in the ninth. Pirates pitcher Bubba Chandler, in his second MLB start, was perfect five innings before allowing a single to Dylan Crews leading off the sixth. Chandler gave up a run on two hits.

Nationals starter Andrew Alvarez allowed three hits and a walk while striking out five. Cole Henry (1-2) took the loss.

Marlins 6, Tigers 4 (11 innings)

Troy Johnston hit a walk-off two-run home run in the 11th inning — his second homer of the game — to give host Miami a come-from-behind win over Detroit.

The Marlins won their fourth straight and assured themselves of winning the three-game weekend series. Josh Simpson (4-2) got the win after stepping in to get the last two outs in the top of the 11th. Miami starter Hanson Junk gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings, with four strikeouts.

The AL Central-leading Tigers lost their third straight to keep their magic number at eight. Detroit took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th on Wenceel Perez’s RBI double but could not score again despite having the bases loaded with nobody out. Tigers starter Charlie Morton went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Athletics 11, Reds 5

Jacob Wilson broke a seventh-inning tie with a double, Carlos Cortes hit his third home run in two days and the Athletics dealt Cincinnati’s postseason hopes another blow with win in West Sacramento, Calif.

Nick Kurtz chipped in with a late grand slam and Brent Rooker also homered for the A’s, who got four innings of shutout ball from four relievers after starter Luis Severino left a 5-5 game after the fifth.

Will Benson and Tyler Stephenson had home runs for the Reds, who gained no ground in the National League wild-card race despite losses by the two teams immediately ahead of them — the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Nick Martinez (10-13) took the loss after allowing a leadoff double in the seventh to Shea Langeliers, who scored on Wilson’s double off Graham Ashcraft later in the inning. Brady Basso (1-0), who threw a scoreless seventh, was credited with the win.

Astros 6, Braves 2

Hunter Brown threw 6 2/3 quality innings, Jeremy Pena and Christian Walker each drove in two runs, and Houston downed host Atlanta to win consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Aug. 27-29.

Brown (12-7) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one. Yainer Diaz went 3-for-4 for the Astros, who needed to win to stay tied with Seattle, which also won on Saturday, atop the American League West. Houston and Seattle also hold a two-game lead over the third-place Texas Rangers, who won their sixth straight earlier Saturday.

Braves starter Bryce Elder (7-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits across 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three. Matt Olson had two hits, including a solo homer, for Atlanta, which lost its fourth straight and is 4-11 over its last 15.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER SURGES, BEN GRIFFIN MAINTAINS 1-STROKE LEAD ENTERING FINAL ROUND OF PROCORE CHAMPIONSHIP

Ben Griffin shot a steady 2-under-par 70 to maintain the lead through the third round of the Procure Championship, but Scottie Scheffler made a big move up the leaderboard Saturday at Napa, Calif.

Griffin produced a clean round until a bogey on the last hole to go into Sunday with a one-shot advantage on amateur Jackson Koivun, an Auburn University golfer, on Silverado Resort’s North Course. Koivun shot 68.

Griffin is at 16-under 200. Scheffler shot 64 to climb to 14 under.

The opening event in the PGA Tour’s fall tournament schedule is stocked with U.S. Ryder Cup golfers in their final competitive tune-up before that event in less than two weeks.

Scheffler’s effort marked the best score of the round, moving up from 14th place at the beginning of the day. He racked up 10 birdies with five on each side, but a double-bogey on the par-4 14th hole that included a misfired chip into a sand trap was costly.

Yet he responded with birdies on three of the final four holes.

Koivun responded from two early bogeys, boosted by a five-hole stretch at 5 under that included an eagle on the par-5 12th.

South Africa’s Garrick Higgo (66) is in fourth place at 13 under. Austin Eckroat (68), Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes (69) and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (69) are all at 10 under.

Behind Scheffler, Higgo and Troy Merritt had the day’s second-best round with 66. Merritt’s strong third round puts him at 7 under for the tournament.

ERNIE ELS WRESTLES AWAY SANFORD INTERNATIONAL LEAD WITH BIG ROUND

South Africa’s Ernie Els was an impressive 7-under-par 63 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead at the Sanford International in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The 55-year-old teed things off with a birdie on his opening hole, then hit three in a row on Holes 5-7. The last half of his round featured additional birdies on the 10th, 12th and 15th as he went bogey-free in surging ahead of closest pursuer Retief Goosen.

His fellow countryman Goosen had higher highs and lower lows, and he did it on back-to-back holes. Following a bogey on the par-4 11th, Goosen rallied immediately for three-stroke eagle on the par-5 12th.

Goosen also had four birdies to get to 5 under on the day and 10 under for the tournament.

Sitting at third at 9 under is Bo Van Pelt, who like Goosen shot a 5-under 65 on Saturday. Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez was also 5 under and sits alone in fourth at 8 under for the tourney.

Tied in fifth four shots behind Els are Demark’s Soren Kjeldsen (65) and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera (69). Cabrera had posted a bogey-free, 6-under 64 to take the Friday lead.

Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke (64) is alone in seventh. Americans Tag Ridings (65) and Boo Weekley (68) are tied for eight.

CHARLEY HULL’S 5-UNDER 67 PROPELS HER INTO LEAD AT KROGER QUEEN CITY

England’s Charley Hull shot a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday in Hamilton, Ohio to take over sole position of first place with one round to go at the Kroger Queen City Championship.

Hull, 29, has failed to win a tournament in 2025, but with her six-birdie, one-bogey day, she moved closer to achieving just that.

It would also be her first win in the United States since 2022.

Hull was 1-over through six holes Saturday, before she heated up, collecting all of her birdies from that point on, including back-to-back on Holes 11-12.

TPC River’s Bend, known for its sloping, difficult greens, has yet to faze the Englishwoman.

“I don’t even think like that in depth. I just hit a ball and find it and hit it again, you know what I mean?” Hull said. “I think that’s the trouble with many golfers, overthinking. It’s just a game. Hit a white ball at the pin. Make a birdie or make a par, make a bogey, whatever, just roll on to the next hole.”

Hull enjoys a one-stroke lead over World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul (68) of Thailand, though the field of contenders remains deep. Japan’s Chisato Iwai (66) and Miyu Yamashita (66) are tied for third two strokes back, with an additional four golfers tied for fifth at 13 under.

That group includes Yealimi Noh (64), the Philippines’ Bianca Pagdanganan (66), China’s Mary Liu (68) and World No. 2 Nelly Korda (68).

“I think it’s going to be another challenging day for sure,” Thitikul said. “As you can see the course and as you can see all the score, everyone can go low and then the course is makable. And then if you really want to win, so you had to make birdies.”

Korda had birdies on Holes 2, 11 and 12, weathered a bogey on 13, and then made up two strokes with a thrilling eagle on 18.

“Yeah, that’s what I love about golf, is kind of the grind,” Korda said. “Doesn’t matter where you are. Sometimes people come from the back. You just have to kind of get it going. There is nothing better than being in the hunt contention and feeling that adrenaline hoping that you are in contention going last few holes in.”

Chanettee Wannasaen, who had led through the first two rounds, had a rough day, shooting a 3-over 75 to fall six shots off the pace. The product of Thailand endured three bogeys and two double bogeys to go along with four birdies.

Germany’s Olivia Cowan, in second place a day ago, fell into a tie for ninth at 12 under with a 1-under 71.

CHRISTOPHER BELL WINS LATE 4-CAR SPRINT AT BRISTOL NIGHT RACE

Christopher Bell passed the front row of cars on a late restart and won a four-lap sprint Saturday night in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Bass Pro Shops Night Race, an elimination event, at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.

After Bubba Wallace’s wreck for the 14th caution with 12 laps left, eight cars were left on the lead lap. With Carson Hocevar and Zane Smith occupying the front row, Bell slipped his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota into the lead.

Bell beat Brad Keselowski by 0.343 seconds for his first win since March 9 but fourth overall. JGR won all three races in the Round of 16.

Zane Smith, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano were the top-five finishers, while Austin Dillon, Alex Bowman, Josh Berry and four-time race winner Shane van Gisbergen were all eliminated.

Polesitter AJ Allmendinger led 23 laps to start, but tire wear became a major issue for his No. 16 Chevrolet and much of the field as the rubber began to come apart.

Berry’s No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford had flames coming out of it on Lap 74 after rubber build-up, and he brought it to pit road for good to end his night and title chances during the first caution period.

With tire-issue problems arising, Blaney made a late pass of Ty Gibbs to claim Stage 1’s maximum 10 points. Following Gibbs were William Byron, Wallace and Smith.

Gibbs was strong in the second segment and led the 39-car field as teams tried to take care of their rubber and not push too hard on the high-banked short track. However, Hocevar was the hardest charger in his No. 77 and moved up to second by Lap 170.

The same duo was again battling at the end of Stage 2, but Gibbs held off Blaney for the segment win. Bowman, Keselowski and Hocevar rounding out the stage’s best five.

Chase Elliott took the biggest hit with a hard smack into the wall on Lap 311 for the 10th caution to end his night. The 2020 champ finished 38th.

Approaching the 400-lap mark, Denny Hamlin lost a wheel for the 13th caution. The accident involved Allmendinger and Byron and cost the No. 11 Toyota a two-lap penalty.

PURDUE FALLS TO USC IN B1G OPENER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — After inclement weather delayed the original 3:40 p.m. ET kickoff to 6:45 p.m., Purdue Football dropped its Big Ten Conference opener, 33-17, to USC on Saturday night.

In the third straight game at Ross-Ade Stadium to start the season, 58,065 fans stuck it out with the Boilermakers through the lengthy delay.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Browne completed 24-of-39 passes (61.5%) for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.

Senior running back Devin Mockobee led Purdue in rushing with 12 carries for 45 yards. He now sits 167 yards behind Scott Dierking (2,863) for fourth place on Purdue’s all-time rushing yardage list.

The Boilermakers (2-1, 0-1 B1G) found the end zone early in the third quarter on a trick play. Browne threw it backwards to wide receiver Michael Jackson III who tossed it backwards across the field back to Browne, however USC linebacker Eric Gentry deflected the ball onto the ground. Browne scooped up the loose ball and carried it 34 yards to pay dirt.

Purdue later engineered an eight-play, 63-yard drive capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass to receiver Nitro Tuggle. It was Tuggle’s second career touchdown and his second consecutive game with a score. He paced Purdue’s receiving with seven catches and 70 yards.

Purdue’s three interceptions in USC territory made the biggest difference in the end. USC (3-0, 1-0 B1G) totaled 460 yards of offense to the Boilermakers’ 365.

Charles Correa and Myles Slusher led Purdue’s defense with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively, and each set a new career-high. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava finished 17-of-28 with 282 yards passing and one rushing score.

Demeco Kennedy recorded his first career sack on Maiava for a nine-yard loss in the second quarter.

Sophomore kicker Spencer Porath once again converted his only field goal attempt to remain perfect this season, booting a 39-yarder in the second quarter. He is the first Boiler to hit his first four kicks of a season since Mitchell Fineran made his first nine in 2021.

Jack McCallister concluded the night with a career-long 68-yard punt and had three total punts for a 54.3-yard average.

UP NEXT

The Boilers play their first road game under head coach Barry Odom next Saturday. Purdue will face Notre Dame for the 89th time in program history, with the historic Shillelagh Trophy on the line.

Kickoff from Notre Dame Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the broadcast on NBC.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

IRISH CAN’T SURVIVE BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE WITH TEXAS A&M

SOUTH BEND, Indiana – The University of Notre Dame football team (0-2) fell in a back-and-forth battle during the 2025 home opener to No. 16/17 Texas A&M (3-0) in front of a sold-out crowd at Notre Dame Stadium.

The Irish held a 17-7 lead in the second quarter, Texas A&M surged to a 28-24 lead at the break and the teams traded scores and field goals throughout the game’s final 30 minutes. A missed point-after-touchdown late in the game allowed the Aggies to drive to a game-winning touchdown with 13 seconds remaining.

Jeremiyah Love paced the Notre Dame offense with 94 yards rushing while adding 53 receiving yards and two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing). Mario Craver led Texas A&M with seven receptions for 207 yards with an 86-yard touchdown reception.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Texas A&M’s first drive was immediately affected by a holding call on its first play which eventually led to a fourth and eight on the Aggie 37-yard line. Sophomore defensive end Loghan Thomas came up the middle clean on the punt rush, smothered the kick and it was picked up by freshman safety Tae Johnson at the 20-yard line and returned for a touchdown.

Johnson followed up with an open field tackle on third down to end A&M’s next offensive drive. The Irish earned one first down with a Jeremiyah Love 12-yard run on the first play, but Love was stopped on third and one to force a punt. James Rendell buried Texas A&M at the five-yard line. The Aggies shrugged off the field position, however and scored in two plays, breaking a tackle in the open field and scoring on an 86-yard pass.

Notre Dame answered the score with a drive of its own. Texas A&M helped the Irish with an obvious late hit out of bounds to move the ball to the Aggie 48-yard line. After running a reverse earlier in the drive, the Irish called a double reverse this time with Jordan Faison and Love touching the ball before CJ Carr ending up with the pigskin and finding a wide open Eli Raridon for 43 yards to the five-yard line.

Two plays later, Jadarian Price found a clean hole on a counter, with Raridon throwing the key block, for a seven-yard touchdown run.

The Irish defense quickly got the ball back for the offense. A&M looked down the left sidelines for a big play, but Leonard Moore was in blanket coverage of the receiver. The sophomore cornerback turned his head at the perfect time and made an easy interception at the A&M 42-yard line.

Notre Dame moved into scoring position on a 24-yard run by Price on third and nine bursting through a huge hole on the right side of the line opened by offensive tackle Aamil Wagner and guard Guerby Lambert.

The drive stalled in the red zone when a slant pass on third down intended for Malachi Fields was expertly defended by the Aggie cornerback. Noah Burnett converted a 22-yard field goal and the Irish owned a 17-7 lead.

The back-and-forth contest continued as Texas A&M answered quickly in four plays. The biggest a 45-yard pass to the one-yard line.

It was Notre Dame’s turn to score and they accomplished their goal on the legs and through the hands of Jeremiyah Love. The junior running back accounted for 63 of 75 yards on a touchdown drive with the last play a spectacular one-hand catch of a bullet pass from CJ Carr for a 36-yard touchdown. The Irish had a 10-point lead again with 9:43 left in the first half.

Notre Dame’s momentum did not last long. The Aggies drove right back down the field to score in nine plays on a 75-yard drive.

Looking to answer yet again, this time the Irish turned the ball over. Carr scrambled left out of the pocket and looked back to his right, overthrowing Price with Texas A&M intercepting the pass at the Notre Dame 47-yard line. It took Texas A&M just seven plays to take their first lead of the game at 28-24 with a two-yard touchdown run.

The Irish received the second half kick and earned one first down before James Rendell came in for a punt to flip the field. A perfect coffin-corner kick bounced out at the one-yard line. Texas A&M quickly went three and out and the punt was returned by Jordan Faison 19 yards to the Aggie 29.

Senior wide receiver Will Pauling kept the Irish drive alive with a key third down catch leading into Price’s second touchdown run of the game. The Texas native took an outside hand off, disregarded an open-field tackle attempt by an A&M defender and scampered 17 yards to put the Irish back into the lead 31-28.

Notre Dame’s defense got the Irish the ball back but the offensive drive would end at midfield. The Aggies stopped Love on a fourth-and-one attempt just over the 50-yard line. A&M would then scrape out a 25-yard drive and tie the game with a 43-yard field goal.

The lead changed hands yet again on the next possession. Price kickstarted the drive with a 31-yard kick return. Jaden Greathouse then grabbed a Carr pass for 34 yards on the first play to the Aggie 31. Price tacked on another 12 yards on a run, but the drive fizzled out again and Burnette came on to convert a 39-yard field goal and the Irish had a 34-31 lead one minute into the fourth quarter.

This was a game that was not going to let any lead by either team last long and the pattern continued as Texas A&M drove down the field to tie the game yet again with a 45-yard field goal.

The Irish needed a clutch drive to take another lead and delivered. Carr found Raridon for 13 yards to start the drive and Fields on third and seven to get into scoring position. Love then took over, powering for six yards on third and four, six more yards a few plays later on fourth and one then capping the drive with a 12-yard burst.

That momentum shot ended quickly, however when the point after touchdown snap was dropped and the Irish could not get the kick off. The lead was just at six points and Texas A&M had to drive for the game-winning score.

A 34-yard completion put Texas A&M across midfield and a third and eight quarterback scramble for nine yards gave the Aggies a first down at the Irish 14-yard line. The Irish defense tied to hold, facing seven plays after that fist down within the Irish 20-yard line. A defensive holding on 3rd and 16 gave the Aggie life and they scored on another third down play, this one from 11 yards out. A&M converted the PAT with 11 seconds remaining to claim the win.

BUTLER DEFENSE SPARKS ROAD WIN AT HANOVER

A strong defensive effort and a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ethan Loss propelled Butler to a 16-7 win over Hanover Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Hanover, Ind.

The Butler defense limited Hanover to 158 total yards on 57 total offensive plays, utilizing seven sacks to force punts on seven Hanover possessions while two others ended on downs.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the young season, while Hanover falls to 0-2.

LINES OF SCRIMMAGE:

Butler quarterback Jarrin Alley, starting in place of Reagan Andrew who was injured in last week’s win over Truman State, threw for 178 yards by completing 17 of his 23 attempts. He added 21 yards on three carries.

Loss, who entered the weekend tenth in FCS in all-purpose yards, totaled 203 yards on the day – 108 on kick-off returns (including the 90-yard touchdown), 68 yards on four catches, and 27 yards on four carries.

Gabe Passini was under center as well for the Bulldogs, totaling 55 yards on 10 carries, including the first touchdown of his career (a 10-yard scamper in the second quarter that gave Butler a 10-7 advantage).

Brayton Spetter led the Bulldogs with seven tackles Saturday afternoon; two of those tackles were behind the line of scrimmage including one sack.

Jackson Stratton had two sacks for the Bulldogs.

Ryan Short punted twice for the Bulldogs, averaging 59.0 yards per punt. Both of his punts were over 50 yards including a 67-yard boomer in the second quarter.

Butler was able to overcome three turnovers on the day – two lost fumbles and one interception.

Hanover’s score came on a 27-yard connection between Eian Roudebush and Curbrian Shelby in the first quarter, which gave HC an early 7-0 advantage.

With Saturday’s win, Butler now leads the all-time series against Hanover 23-1-1.

Saturday’s win was also the first road victory for first-year Butler head coach Kevin Lynch.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs return to the road at Weber State Saturday, Sept. 20. Butler then returns to the Sellick Bowl Sept. 27 to host Marist. The game serves as the PFL opener for the Bulldogs and it will be Homecoming Weekend on the Butler campus.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

CARDINALS VICTORIOUS IN HOME OPENER VERSUS NEW HAMPSHIRE

MUNCIE, Ind. – On a rainy family weekend during Ball State’s opening game at Scheumann Stadium, running back Qua Ashley and quarterback Kiael Kelly thrived in the run game to put the Cardinals over New Hampshire 34-29. Head coach Mike Uremovich celebrated his first program win in front of a home crowd of 10,512.

The Cardinals (1-2, 0-0 MAC) rushed for a total of 308 yards, the most at Scheumann Stadium since Ball State recorded 376 versus Toledo in 2019. Leading the charge against the Wildcats was Ashley, who finished with 154 rushing yards along with two rushing touchdowns. Ashley was also on the receiving end of a Kelly throw in the third quarter, bringing his touchdown total to three on the day.

Kelly’s 105 passing yards and 102 rushing yards cemented him as the first Ball State player since 2000 with at least 100 yards in both categories in a single game. He completed nine of his 15 attempts for two touchdowns.

Kelly has eclipsed 1,000 total rushing yards for his career (1,045). He is third on Ball State’s career rushing list by a quarterback.

The Cardinals’ run game ruled the day, but the defense forced New Hampshire into four field goal attempts and stymied the Wildcats’ offense.

Following Kelly’s lone interception and Eric Weatherly’s muffed punt, both in the second quarter, defensive standouts Nathan Voorhis and Micah Wing sacked New Hampshire QB Matt Vezza on third down, ending a short drive that started at the Ball State 7-yardline. The Wildcats were forced to settle for a field goal, which was wide right from 23 yards out.

New Hampshire went 2-of-4 on field goals, with their longest coming from 52 yards in the third period. The Wildcats’ four field goal attempts were a tribute to the Cardinals’ defense forcing UNH inefficiency. UNH ran 58 plays for 280 yards that consumed nearly 30 minutes of elapsed time, compared to 381 yards by the Cardinals, on 38 plays and just 16 minutes.

New Hampshire opened the contest with a quick TD following a blocked punt, but both teams traded scores until Ball State took the lead for good on a 10-yard scoring pass from Kelly to freshman tight end Kameron Anthony with 20 seconds left in the first half. It was Anthony’s first career touchdown and it staked the Cardinals to the lead, then 28-21, it never relinquished.

Ashley scored on a 27-yard throw from Kelly to open scoring in the third period to give the Cardinals a cushion with a 34-21 advantage.

The 52-yard field goal brought the Wildcats within 34-24, and a safety and field goal brought UNH within 34-29 in the game’s final minutes.

Senior linebacker Jack Beebe led the defensive effort with nine tackles. Five different players accounted for four sacks, and the Cardinals produced nine tackles for loss.

Kelly threw his first interception of the season, and while the Ball State defense didn’t come up with any interceptions, the Cardinals got a combined seven pass break-ups from Dejuan Echoles Jr., Will Yates, Jahmad Harmon and Jackson Wiegold.

The Cardinals look to continue the momentum as they travel to Connecticut Sept. 20 to take on the Huskies, with the start time set for 3:30 p.m. ET.

UINDY FOOTBALL

FOOTBALL COMPLETES DOUBLE-DIGIT COMEBACK TO TOP #20 EAGLES

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to down visiting Ashland Saturday afternoon, 33-26. The Greyhound defense forced three turnovers in the final period while sophomore running back Garrett Sherrell added a pair of late touchdowns.

INS & OUTS

After a scoreless first quarter from both teams, the Hounds got on the board on the first play of the second quarter. Gavin Sukup found a streaking Colton Wilkie with a 14-yard touchdown for the first score of the afternoon.

The Greyhound pass rush turned up the heat later in the quarter, as back-to-back sacks from Indy-native Danny Royster led to another Greyhound TD. Royster’s second sack popped the ball out of the Eagle QB’s hands, setting up Alvin Contreras for a 43-yard scoop-and-score to make it 14-3 Hounds.

Nevertheless, Ashland clawed back and eventually pulled ahead, running off 23 answered points to build a 26-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

That’s when the Hounds started to cook. The offense promptly marched down the field to make it a one-possession game with 10 minutes to go. Alonzo Derrick had three catches for 44 yards on the drive ahead of Sherrell’s one-yard TD plunge.

Later with Ashland crafting an effective drive of its own, the UIndy defense came up with a big takeaway, as Contreras’ first career INT set up the go-head score. Sukup had three completions of 11 yards or more on the ensuing drive, while Sherrell once again capped the possession with a one-yard touchdown.

The cherry on top came in the waning seconds. Backed up deep in their own territory with only two seconds on the clock, the Eagles desperately tried a number of laterals before fumbling in their own end zone. Contreras pounced on the ball to tack on six more points and add to an already-exciting finish.

INSIDE THE BOX

– Sherrell racked up 67 all-purpose yards and two TDs in the decisive fourth quarter.

– Eli Liapis corralled his first interception of the season with a timely fourth-quarter pick.

– Derrick finished with a game-high eight catches for 129 yards.

– Linebacker and team captain Jalen Wilson led all players with 13 total tackles.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

KNIGHTS RUN WILD IN LANDSLIDE 69-14 WIN OVER DEFIANCE

INDIANAPOLIS – Overcoming a lengthy weather delay, the Marian football team wasted no time asserting their dominance in their first-ever meeting against Defiance College, racing to a 38-0 halftime lead before ending the game on top 69-14. The family weekend victory at Ascension St. Vincent Field moves the Knights to 2-1 on the season.

As kickoff loomed, so too did Mother Nature, with a storm cell delaying the start of Saturday’s game for 80 minutes. The Knights overcame the long delay pregame and wasted no time welcoming Defiance to Ascension St. Vincent Field, forcing a quick three-and-out as Ozzy Pollard recorded a third down sack to force a punt. Marian put points on their first possession as the drive stalled in the red zone and led to a Kenny Curry 28-yard field goal. The defense forced another punt, and in an instant, the offense found the end zone, with Avery Garlock taking his first collegiate carry 68 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the ensuing series. Garlock nearly hit the turf as he was wrapped up after a 13-yard pickup, but avoided touching the ground, and continued racing to make it a 10-0 lead.

A Deon Pettiford sack at the end of the first quarter sealed a 10-0 lead, and set the program record for career tackles for loss, with the senior logging his 39th career TFL. Pettiford passed Ryan Hartnett ’15 for the all-time lead.

The offense continued to click as they moved near midfield with the first quarter coming to a close, and on the second play of the following period, Tristan Polk hit a deep shot to Jake Reichard, connecting for a 51-yard score. A three-and-out set up by a Wyatt Woodall sack brought the offense back onto the field, and with a short field following the punt, Polk scampered in from 13 yards away on a draw to make the game a 24-0 contest. Logan Carrington ended the next Yellowjacket drive with his third interception of the year, and again the offense scored, this time on the legs of Polk as the senior quarterback took a fourth-and-one 63 yards to the house.

The longest run of Polk’s career made the game 31-0 in favor of Marian, and on the next possession Hunter Newman scored his first collegiate touchdown on an 11-yard rush. Marian’s defense would pitch a first-half shutout as they forced a turnover on downs at their own eight-yard line in the waning seconds of the quarter, and went into halftime leading 38-0.

Marian scored on six of its seven first-half possessions, and continued its offensive dominance into the third quarter, opening the half with a 31-yard field goal from Kenny Curry. The Knights would punt on their second series of the quarter, but continued their scoring as the defense proved to be too much to handle, getting a touchdown run from Uriah Buchanan to make the game 48-0.

The Knights scored on all but one of their fourth-quarter possessions, getting rushing scores from Todd Hickman (69 yards) and CJ Harris (63 yards), while Montasi Clay ran back a kickoff for a touchdown from 84 yards out. Defiance would score twice in the fourth quarter, but the return touchdown from Clay was the final strike, ending the game in a runaway 69-14 victory.

As a team, the Knights rushed for 435 yards, the second-highest total in program history behind a 2015 performance at Missouri Baptist. Marian out-gained Defiance 569-283 in offensive yards, doing so while possessing the ball for 10 minutes less than the Yellowjackets.

Tristan Polk passed for 134 yards and one touchdown in the win, while setting a career-high 71 yards on the ground with two rushing scores. Reichard recorded 89 yards through the air and a touchdown, while Todd Hickman led the team in rushing with 77 yards. Eight different Knights ran the ball on Saturday, with each player gaining 30 or more yards. Four different Marian running backs scored their first collegiate touchdowns, while Montasi Clay scored his first career touchdown on his kickoff return score. Clay had 104 yards of all-purpose yardage, a game-high for Marian.

Defensively, Cade Houseman led the team in tackles with nine, while Jaxson Scruggs made seven total tackles, including his first career interception. Jason Redmon also recorded his first career interception in the win, while JT Downey was one of six Knights to record at least a half sack.

The Knights hit the bye week following the win, and will finish the month of September at home against current No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan. The September 27 game will kick at 1:05 p.m.

1986 — Bob Brenly of San Francisco tied a major league record with four errors in one inning, but atoned with two homers, including the game-winner, to give the Giants a 7-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Brenly, a catcher, was playing third base.

1987 — Ernie Whitt hit three of Toronto’s major league record 10 home runs as the Blue Jays rolled to an 18-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken had his consecutive-inning streak stopped at 8,243 when he was replaced at shortstop by Ron Washington in the eighth inning.

1990 — Ken Griffey and his son hit back-to-back homers in the first inning of the Seattle Mariners’ 7-5 loss to the California Angels. The unprecedented father-and-son homers came off Kirk McCaskill.

1994 — The baseball season, already shut down by a month long strike, was canceled along with the World Series in a vote by 26 of the 28 teams.

1998 — The Atlanta Braves clinched their seventh straight division crown, winning the NL East with a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Among the major pro sports leagues — baseball, NFL, NBA and NHL — only seven franchises had finished first during the regular season at least seven times in a row.

2002 — Tampa Bay’s 8-4 loss at Toronto was the Devil Rays’ 100th of the season. The Devil Rays (48-100) became the quickest AL team to lose 100 games since the 1949 Washington Senators lost 100 in their 147th game. They also became the first team to lose 100 in consecutive seasons since Toronto did it from 1977-79.

2003 — The Detroit Tigers lost to the Royals 7-2 to become the first team in 34 years to lose 110 games in one season. Detroit (38-110) has the most losses since the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres went 52-110 in 1969, their first seasons in the major leagues.

Jose Ramirez led off the 10th with a hard hit into right-center off Brandon Maurer that he turned into a double with a head-first slide. After Edwin Encarnacion walked, Bruce, ripped a 2-0 pitch into the right-field corner.

2017 — Rhys Hoskins homered again, Freddy Galvis and Jorge Alfaro also went deep in a seven-run second inning, and Philadelphia routed slumping Miami 10-0. Sanchez needed 45 games.

2022 — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits the 100th homer of his career off Drew Rasmussen in the 1st inning to put the Blue Jays ahead and they never look back, defeating the Rays, 5 – 1, behind Ross Stripling.
