COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: UCLA EARNS 1ST WIN, STUNS NO. 7 PENN STATE

Nico Iamaleava accounted for five touchdowns as host UCLA stunned No. 7 Penn State 42-37 on Saturday to earn its first win of the season.

Iamaleava went 17 of 24 for 166 yards with two touchdowns and ran 16 times for 128 yards and three more scores. Kwazi Gilmer recorded team highs of five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown for the Bruins (1-4, 1-1 Big Ten).

Drew Allar threw a pair of touchdown passes and finished 19 of 26 for 200 yards as Penn State (3-2, 0-2) dropped its second straight game following a home overtime loss to then-No. 6 Oregon last week. The Nittany Lions nearly pulled off a 20-point comeback Saturday, but they came up short at the end.

With Penn State facing a fourth-and-2 from the UCLA 9 in the final minute, Allar kept it on a read option and was tackled by the Bruins’ defense. UCLA went nowhere offensively and took an intentional safety with 17 seconds remaining, but the Nittany Lions never found their rhythm on their final drive.

No. 1 Ohio State 42, Minnesota 3

Julian Sayin threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, and Carnell Tate set a career high with 183 receiving yards along with a touchdown, as the Buckeyes steamrolled the Golden Gophers in Columbus.

The victory gave Ryan Day a 75-10 record (88.2 percent), making him the all-time career winning percentage leader in major college history, surpassing Notre Dame’s Knute Rockne’s 88.1 percent from 1918-30.

Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey was 15 of 26 for 94 yards. The Golden Gophers had 162 total yards, with 66 coming on their first series.

No. 3 Miami 28, No. 18 Florida State 22

Carson Beck threw four touchdown passes and the Hurricanes held off a late charge from the Seminoles for an Atlantic Coast Conference rivalry win in Tallahassee, Fla.

Beck was a smooth operator, completing 20 of 27 passes for 240 yards. He led an offensive outburst that saw the Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0 in ACC) rattle off 28 straight points, gradually squeezing the life out of the Seminoles (3-2, 0-2).

After Florida State was held without a touchdown in the first three quarters, quarterback Tommy Castellanos threw a pair of fourth-quarter TD passes, finishing 25-of-45 passing for 272 yards, with two interceptions and a game-high 57 rushing yards.

No. 5 Oklahoma 44, Kent State 0

Michael Hawkins Jr. threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth score as the Sooners beat the Golden Flashes in Norman, Okla.

Isaiah Sategna finished with four catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns to lead Oklahoma (5-0). He also had 97 punt return yards. Freshman Tory Blaylock led the Sooners on the ground, running for 78 yards on 15 carries.

Devin Kargman made his first start since 2023, going 8 of 16 for 74 yards and an interception for Kent State (1-4). The Sooners outgained the Golden Flashes 355-135, holding Kent State to 17 rushing yards.

No. 6 Texas A&M 31, Mississippi State 9

Marcel Reed threw a pair of touchdown passes to KC Concepcion and ran for another touchdown as the host Aggies defeated the Bulldogs.

Reed passed for only 180 yards, but Texas A&M (5-0, 2-0 SEC) rushed for 299 yards, led by Rueben Owens II’s 142 yards on 21 attempts. The Aggies held Mississippi State to one first-down conversion on 10 third-down plays. A week earlier, in a 16-10 win against Auburn, the Aggies didn’t allow any conversions on 13 third-down and two fourth-down attempts.

Blake Shapen passed for just 142 yards with a touchdown and an interception as Mississippi State (4-2, 0-2) totaled just 219 yards. Shapen threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Brenen Thompson in the fourth quarter to account for the Bulldogs’ lone score.

Florida 29, No. 9 Texas 21

DJ Lagway passed for 298 yards and two touchdowns and Jadan Baugh ran for 107 yards and another score as the Gators held on to upset the visiting Longhorns.

Florida (2-3, 1-1 SEC) ruled the first half and took advantage of breakdowns in the Longhorns’ defense to snap a three-game losing streak and beat Texas for the first time in five all-time meetings. Dallas Wilson hauled in a game-high six passes for 111 yards and both of Lagway’s TDs as the Gators finished with a 457-341 edge in total yards.

The Longhorns (3-2, 0-1 SEC) trailed by 15 points before quarterback Arch Manning captained a 69-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard TD run by Quintrevion Wisner with 3:20 left to bring the Longhorns to within 29-21. Texas got the ball back with 55 seconds to play at its own 3, but could not make magic happen. Manning finished 16-of-29 passing for 263 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter and was sacked six times.

No. 10 Alabama 30, No. 16 Vanderbilt 14

Ty Simpson passed for 340 yards and two touchdowns to help the Crimson Tide notch a 30-14 victory over the Commodores in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jam Miller rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, Conor Talty kicked three field goals and Keon Sabb nabbed a key interception for Alabama (4-1, 2-0), which recorded its fourth straight victory. Ryan Williams caught six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Diego Pavia completed 21 of 35 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and one interception while adding 58 rushing yards for Vanderbilt (5-1, 1-1), which built a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter but never scored again. Sedrick Alexander rushed for one touchdown and caught the other for the Commodores.

No. 11 Texas Tech 35, Houston 11

Behren Morton threw for 345 yards and a touchdown and the Red Raiders never trailed en route to a Big 12 Conference win at the Cougars in a matchup of unbeatens.

Morton hit 28 of 40 passes for the Red Raiders (5-0, 2-0), which also got a pair of touchdown runs and 107 yards rushing from J’Koby Williams. Texas Tech also got three field goals from Stone Harrington and two more from Upton Bellenfant.

The Cougars (4-1, 1-1) were forced to play two quarterbacks when starter Conner Weigman was knocked out late in the first half with an undisclosed upper-body injury after completing 5 of 12 passes for 71 yards and one interception. Houston managed only 267 total yards and 12 first downs, converting just 1 of 12 third downs.

No. 12 Georgia 35, Kentucky 14

Gunner Stockton completed 15 of 23 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 48 yards and two scores as the Bulldogs breezed past the Wildcats in Athens, Ga.

Dillon Bell had four catches for 68 yards and added two scores on the ground, while Chauncey Bowens had 70 rushing yards for Georgia (4-1, 2-1), which beat Kentucky (2-3, 0-3) for the 16th straight time.

Cutter Boley completed 25 of 41 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception, for the Wildcats, who dropped their eighth straight conference game since beating Ole Miss on Sept. 28, 2024.

Cincinnati 38, No. 14 Iowa State 30

Brendan Sorsby’s 82-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Goodie with 5:57 to play extended the host Bearcats’ lead to 16 points over the Cyclones, and Cincinnati held on for an eight-point victory in Big 12 play.

The Bearcats (4-1, 2-0) rushed for 260 yards and had 474 total yards. Evan Pryor led the ground attack with 111 yards and a pair of scores, while Sorsby added nine rushes for 64 yards and a touchdown in addition to 13-of-25 passing for 214 yards and two TDs.

Iowa State (5-1, 2-1) got 314 yards and two touchdowns through the air from quarterback Rocco Becht, who completed 30 of 48 passes. Brett Eskildsen caught eight passes for 105 yards and a score.

No. 20 Michigan 24, Wisconsin 10

Justice Haynes rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns as the Wolverines downed the visiting Badgers.

The Alabama transfer has reached 100 yards in each of Michigan’s first five games. Meanwhile, Bryce Underwood completed 19 of 28 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, and Donaven McCulley made six receptions for 112 yards and a score for the Wolverines (4-1 overall, 2-0 B

Dilin Jones rushed for 63 yards and the lone touchdown for Wisconsin (2-3, 0-2). Hunter Simmons completed 18 of 29 passes for 177 yards, with Vinny Anthony II making nine receptions for 97 yards.

No. 21 Notre Dame 28, Boise State 7

Jeremiyah Love rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown while Jadarian Price added 83 yards and a score as the Fighting Irish smothered the Broncos in South Bend, Ind.

CJ Carr threw for 189 yards and two scores as Notre Dame (3-2) won its third in a row. Leonard Moore grabbed two of the Fighting Irish’s four interceptions.

Maddux Madsen hit 22 of 37 passes for 215 yards for Boise State (3-2). Madsen rushed a 1-yard score to give the Broncos a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter, but Love zipped for a 4-yard touchdown just before halftime and Carr clicked with Malachi Fields for a 6-yard score that made it 21-7 with 5:49 left in the third.

No. 22 Illinois 43, Purdue 27

Luke Altmyer passed for a career-best 390 yards and a touchdown and Kaden Feagin rushed for two scores, lifting the Illini over the host Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Ind.

Altmyer completed 19 of his 22 passes and David Olano kicked field goals of 35, 42, 45 and 40 yards for Illinois (5-1, 2-1). Hank Beatty surpassed his career high for receiving yards ahead of halftime with 137 on four catches and added another catch for 49 yards. Ca’Lil Valentine led the Illini rushing attack with 22 carries for 95 yards and a TD.

Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne was 30 of 50 for 302 yards and a touchdown while adding a 1-yard rushing TD to open the scoring. Michael Jackson III had 14 catches for 94 yards for the Boilermakers (2-3, 0-2) while Corey Smith contributed 83 yards on three receptions.

No. 24 Virginia 30, Louisville 27

J’Mari Taylor’s 2-yard touchdown run lifted the visiting Cavaliers to an overtime victory over the Cardinals in ACC action. Back in the rankings for the first time since 2019 after last week’s overtime upset of Florida State, Virginia (5-1, 3-0 ACC) is off to its best start since 2017.

After Louisville opened overtime with a 24-yard field goal, Cavaliers QB Chandler Morris was shaken up when he took a big hit trying to score at the 2-yard line. Taylor took the ball on a direct snap on the next play and plowed into the end zone for the game-winner. Morris passed for 149 yards and a touchdown and Taylor finished with 97 yards from scrimmage. Virginia had two defensive touchdowns

The Cardinals (4-1, 1-1) had a seven-game winning streak snapped, dating back to last season. Miller Moss threw for 329 yards with three TDs (two passing, one rushing), but his pick-six gave the Cavaliers the lead midway through the third quarter. Chris Bell set career highs in receptions (12), receiving yards (170) and touchdowns (two).

AP TOP 25 PREVIEW: PENN STATE COULD DROP OUT OF TOP 25 AFTER LOSS TO UCLA. TEXAS TEETERING, TOO

Not a good day for a couple blue bloods, especially Penn State.

The No. 7 Nittany Lions went to the West Coast a week after their crushing home loss to Oregon and got beat again, this time by a woebegone UCLA in what to date is the upset of the year in college football.

Penn State didn’t build up much equity with its light nonconference schedule, and the 42-37 loss to the Bruins could leave it on the outside looking in when The Associated Press Top 25 is released Sunday.

No. 9 Texas’ 29-21 loss to Florida could knock the Longhorns out of the rankings as well.

A week after three top-five teams lost, the three that played Saturday won. Ohio State rolled past Minnesota 42-3 and is on track to be No. 1 for the sixth straight week. No. 3 Miami, up 28-3 entering the fourth quarter, held off No. 18 Florida State 28-22 and No. 5 Oklahoma routed Kent State 44-0.

Look for them to move up

No. 10 Alabama has an opportunity to jump at least two spots because of the losses by Penn State and Texas. The Crimson Tide pulled away from No. 16 Vanderbilt 30-14.

No. 11 Texas Tech beat Houston 35-11 in a battle of unbeatens and should receive its highest ranking since 2013, when it reached No. 10, and possibly since it was No. 8 at the end of the 2008 regular season.

No. 12 Georgia, a 35-14 winner against Kentucky, also is poised to return to the top 10.

No. 20 Michigan took care of business for a 24-10 win against Wisconsin and should move up a little.

Look for them to drop

All depending on what the voters decide, but Penn State could tie 1959 Oklahoma for the second-biggest drop out of the rankings, not counting preseason polls or the 2020 pandemic season. The Nittany Lions would fall 19 spots, just as the Sooners did when they went from No. 2 to out of the Top 20 after losing their opener to Northwestern. The biggest drop all time was by 2007 Michigan, which dropped 21 spots from No. 5 to out of the rankings for losing its opener to Appalachian State.

Texas came into the season as the preseason No. 1 team and then lost its opener at Ohio State. Wins over San Jose State, UTEP and Sam Houston probably aren’t enough to keep a free fall from happening after the loss to Florida.

No. 14 Iowa State couldn’t dig itself out of a 24-point hole late in the second quarter and lost 38-30 at Cincinnati.

Wild cards

No. 22 Illinois’s 43-27 win at Purdue put its abysmal loss to Indiana farther back in the rear-view mirror and sets the stage for Ohio State’s visit to Champaign next week.

It will be interesting to see how the voters treat Vanderbilt, which still was within six points of Alabama in the middle of the fourth quarter.

No. 21 Notre Dame, which beat Boise State 28-7, probably merits a move up after holding Arkansas and the Broncos to a combined 20 points.

Knocking on the door

South Florida, out of the Top 25 the last three polls, was the first team outside the Top 25 last week and could re-enter. The Bulls rushed for a season-high 407 yards and finished with 631 total in a 54-26 rout of Charlotte.

Cincinnati has won four straight since its loss to Nebraska in the opener and outmuscled Iowa State while picking up yards in big chunks.

Memphis can make a case for a ranking. The Tigers hammered Tulsa 45-7 and are 6-0 for the first time since 2015.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

MLB ROUNDUP: TIGERS TOP MARINERS IN 11 INNINGS TO TAKE SERIES OPENER

Zach McKinstry’s broken-bat RBI single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning broke a tie as the Detroit Tigers defeated host Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Saturday night in the opener of their best-of-five American League Division Series.

Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who are set to send ace Tarik Skubal to the mound in Game 2 on Sunday.

Will Vest (1-0) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the victory and Keider Montero worked the 11th for the first save of his career. Right-hander Troy Melton, a rookie making his fifth career start for Detroit, went four innings and gave up one run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Julio Rodriguez homered and had a run-scoring single for Seattle. Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh both went 3-for-5, but the rest of the lineup was 0-for-28.
Mariners starter George Kirby allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out eight.

Blue Jays 10, Yankees 1

Alejandro Kirk cracked two solo homers and host Toronto scored eight runs in its final two innings to turn a taut ALDS Game 1 into a convincing victory that marked its first postseason win since 2016.

Vladimir Guerrero added three hits, including his first postseason home run, for the Blue Jays while Nathan Lukes drove in three runs. Kevin Gausman (1-0) allowed four hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings while Louis Varland struck out Giancarlo Stanton with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth to preserve a 2-1 edge.

Yankees starter Luis Gil (0-1) surrendered solo homers to Guerrero and Kirk before leaving with two outs in the third. New York loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth, but Gausman fanned Aaron Judge (2-for-4) on a full-count pitch out of the zone. Cody Bellinger walked to force in New York’s run, but Gausman induced an infield fly from Ben Rice before Varland entered and fanned Stanton.

Brewers 9, Cubs 3

Ace right-hander Freddy Peralta shook off a leadoff homer and pitched effectively into the sixth inning to pace Milwaukee to a big win over Chicago in the opener of their best-of-five National League Division Series.

Cubs starter Matthew Boyd (0-1) failed to get out of a six-run Milwaukee first inning. The Brewers added three runs in the second, batting around in both innings to go in front 9-1. Peralta (1-0), who led the NL with 17 victories during the regular season, allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking three in a 95-pitch outing.

He allowed the opening homer by Michael Busch and a two-out solo homer in the sixth by Ian Happ after Milwaukee had built a 9-1 lead. Helping that offensive effort were Jackson Chourio, who had three hits and three RBIs from the leadoff spot, and Caleb Durbin, who knocked in two runs in the Brewers’ big second inning.

Dodgers 5, Phillies 3

Teoscar Hernandez hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift visiting Los Angeles to a victory over Philadelphia in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Dodgers starter Shohei Ohtani uncharacteristically allowed three runs on the mound and struck out four times, but Los Angeles rallied against left-hander Cristopher Sanchez and the Phillies.

Sanchez gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings before David Robertson (0-1) and Matt Strahm combined to surrender the lead. Ohtani (1-0) allowed three runs and three hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out nine in his first career postseason start as a pitcher.

NFL ANALYST MARK SANCHEZ ARRESTED WHILE HE WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH STAB WOUNDS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was arrested Saturday after he was apparently stabbed in an overnight altercation in downtown Indianapolis.

Sanchez, who was in Indianapolis to call Sunday’s Raiders-Colts game, was charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication — all misdemeanors.

Indianapolis police said Sanchez was in a hospital and had not been booked into a detention center. He was in stable condition, according to Fox Sports.

Police said the Marion County prosecutor’s office would make the final charging decision. That office didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press.

Indianapolis police said earlier in the day that they were investigating a confrontation that occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday between two men, one of whom was hospitalized with stab wounds. The other man received treatment for lacerations, police said.

Detectives had reviewed video footage of the confrontation, which police said occurred in the popular downtown nightlife Wholesale District next to the Indiana statehouse.

Police said neither man was a local resident and called it an “isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence.”

Few other details were available.

“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time,” Fox Sports said.

Sanchez, 38, had a 10-year NFL career before retiring in 2019. He appeared on ABC and ESPN for two years before joining Fox Sports as a game analyst in 2021.

The Long Beach, California, native starred at Southern California before he was selected by the New York Jets with the fifth pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

He passed for 3,207 yards and 34 touchdowns while leading the Trojans to a 12-1 record during his junior year, which included a victory over Penn State in the 2009 Rose Bowl.

He spent four seasons with the Jets, starting each of his 62 games while throwing for 12,092 yards and 68 touchdowns with 69 interceptions. The Jets lost in the AFC championship in each of Sanchez’s first two years in the league.

Sanchez also appeared in games with Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington. He finished his playing career with 15,357 yards passing, 86 TD passes and 89 interceptions.

The Jets and several of Sanchez’s former teammates posted message of support on social media on Saturday.

“Sending our thoughts and love to Mark Sanchez and his family. Hoping for a speedy recovery, 6,” the Jets said, using Sanchez’s former jersey number.

“Send prayers up for my former teammate mark.. sucks so much to see this,” Kerry Rhodes wrote.

“So sad. Pray for his recovery,” Nick Mangold wrote.

YOUMIN HWANG RIDES BIRDIE RUN TO LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP, 1ST LPGA TOUR CROWN

South Korea’s Youmin Hwang birdied five of the last six holes, including four straight to finish the round and capture the Lotte Championship for her first LPGA Tour victory on Saturday in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Hwang carded a 5-under-par 67 to finish at 17-under 271, one stroke ahead of fellow South Korean Hyo Joo Kim, who birdied No. 18 and shot 68 on Saturday, and two ahead of Japan’s Minami Katsu (69).

The 22-year-old Hwang fired a career-best and course-record, 10-under 62 on Thursday to hold a three-shot lead after two rounds at Hoakalei Country Club. She followed that with a 3-over 75 on Friday to fall into an eight-way tie for second at 12 under.

Hwang had a flat front nine on Saturday, following one birdie at the par-3 No. 4 with a bogey at the par-5 No. 5 and otherwise settling for par. The back nine was a different story after three straight pars.

She birdied the par-4 No. 13 to get to 13 under for the tournament, made par at No. 14 and then ripped off consecutive birdies at Nos. 15-18 — the first hole a par-3 and the last a par-5.

“I actually didn’t believe in myself, but, yeah, my caddie, he supported me very well during the course,” Hwang said through a translator when asked about the tournament-ending birdie run. “He said we can make it, and he said some kind of support from him. Thanks to his support, I think I can be here the winner of today’s championship.”

With Hwang’s first LPGA Tour win, she can choose to become a tour member immediately or defer to 2026. Hwang also has two career victories on the LPGA of Korea Tour, and she won a Taiwan LPGA Tour event this year.

“I’m glad things went very well, just as I planned for this year as challenge,” Hwang said through a translator and also thanked Lotte, which invited her to the tournament as the sponsor.

World No. 2 Nelly Korda, seeking her first win in 2025, carded 69 for the third time in four rounds (the other a 67 on Thursday) to finish in a four-way tie for fourth at 14 under.

Korda birdied Nos. 1, 2, 10, 11 and 15, countered by bogeys at Nos. 9 and 16. She tied with Taiwan’s Peiyn Chien (70 on Saturday), third-round leader Akie Iwai of Japan (71) and American Jessica Porvasnik (70).

“I mean, my game plan, it’s pretty simple: It’s always to give everything 100 percent and concentrate in and dial in it,” Korda said. “If I’m doing what I can, then that’s kind of like the most that I can do. But it was nice to be in contention. The end goal, always, without saying, for everyone in this field, is to lift that trophy on Sunday. Falling a little bit short definitely motivated. Have some work to do and have a couple more events to end off the season.”

GARRICK HIGGO ADDS TO LEAD GOING INTO FINAL ROUND AT SANDERSON FARMS

South Africa’s Garrick Higgo shot a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday to expand his lead to two strokes after three rounds of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss.

Higgo, now at 18-under 198, had shared the lead with three others after a first-round 65, then was alone atop the leaderboard by one stroke after his 66 on Friday at the Country Club of Jackson.

He needed one more stroke on Saturday, when he carded six birdies (at Nos. 1, 2, 9, 11, 14 and 15) to more than make up for his lone bogey of the day (and fourth of the tournament) at the par-5 No. 5.

“I’d say it was quite a good fight,” said Higgo, 26, who has missed time due to a torn hip labrum. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I mean, it’s never easy. Golf never really goes your way. I just stayed patient and tried to put good swings on it and tried to roll the ball as good as I can.”

The former UNLV standout earned his second PGA Tour victory earlier this year in mid-April at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic. He was asked if having that win gives him the mindset on how to finish out a tournament with a victory.

“Yeah, I’ve obviously won in Europe a few times, too,” said Higgo, who notched his first PGA Tour win in June 2021 at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree. “Wherever you win, I don’t know, all of us love competing, so all of us (on Sunday) will go out and try our best. I’m going to play as if I’m behind (on Sunday) and be as aggressive as I can be and make as many birdies as I can.”

Steven Fisk and Danny Walker, two PGA Tour rookies seeking their first victory, are tied for second at 16-under 200. Fisk shot a bogey-free 65 with birdies at Nos. 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 15 and 17. The 28-year-old’s best finish in 22 events is a tie for fourth at the Puerto Rico Open in March.

Walker, 30, has one top-10 finish in 21 events this year, a tie for sixth at The Players Championship in March. He had an adventurous third round for a 67, especially on the front nine when he went birdie-bogey-eagle at Nos. 3-4-5 and bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9 for an even-par 36. Walker was better (5 under) on the back nine despite a bogey at the par-3 No. 10, as he birdied Nos. 11, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 for a sizzling finish.

This is Walker’s first week with his new putter, and he couldn’t remember ever finishing a round with five consecutive birdies.

“Yeah, I’ve been making a lot of putts,” Walker said of his tournament so far. “I think going through a little adversity in the middle of the round, it helps knowing that my putting is strong where I don’t have to hit it super close, I don’t have to stuff it. I can just play a little more conservative and trust that I’m going to make some putts.”

Taylor Montgomery (69 on Saturday) is alone in fourth at 15 under, with fellow Americans Matt Kuchar (65), Frankie Capan III (68) and Vince Whaley (68) tied for fifth at 14 under.

Defending champion Kevin Yu of Taiwan is tied for 23rd at 10 under.

MATT GOGEL TAKES SECOND-ROUND LEAD AT FURYK & FRIENDS

Matt Gogel shot an 8-under-par 64 on Saturday to take the lead after two rounds of the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

Gogel, 54, has a 12-under 132 total and a three-shot lead over second-place Cameron Percy of Australia entering the final day of play. Gogel, who was tied for fourth place with a 68 after the first round, had one eagle, seven birdies and one bogey on Saturday.

Gogel’s 64 tied the tournament 18-hole scoring record after he got four birdies to start the second round and five birdies on his first six holes.

Of his fast start, Gogel said: “We’re trained to play one hole at a time, right? I made a birdie on 1, 2 and 3. And then 4 you don’t expect, that’s like a 210-yard par 3, tough to hit the green. I settled in, and really the key I think was the back nine. … So I’m in good shape.”

Gogel, who is looking for his first career Champions win, had his eagle on the back nine — on the par-5 13th — along with two birdies.

Percy, the first-round leader at 8-under 64, shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday and is at 9-under 135 after two rounds. He said the wind was his biggest challenge of the second round.

“Yesterday the wind was consistent; we knew where it was. Today it was everywhere,” Percy said Saturday. …”I had no control on my shots today; it kept going too far on me. I really struggled.”

Tommy Gainey shot a 67 on Saturday to share third place with Soren Kjeldsen (68) of Denmark at 8-under 136. David Duval, Chad Campbell and Vijay Singh of Fiji were tied for fifth at 137.

“Tough conditions around here,” said Duval, who had three birdies and the rest pars in the second round.

Singh has won five times on the senior tour, but only once since 2018.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

HOOSIER HEART ON FULL DISPLAY

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On just under 24 hours rest, the Indiana volleyball team (13-1, 4-0 B1G) worked in an impressive fourth-set comeback to complete one of the best road trips in program history. The Hoosiers pulled away late from No. 24 UCLA with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21) win at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday (Oct. 4) evening.

It took an impressive effort from IU’s three pins to pick up a second-straight ranked victory. Senior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles racked up 18 kills while senior opposite hitter Avry Tatum provided 17 kills at a .375 hitting clip. On the night, the Hoosiers outhit UCLA .262-.254 across the four sets.

The Hoosiers went down 9-2 in the fourth set and seemed to be losing momentum in its eighth set in two days. Freshman defensive specialist Avery Freeman had an 8-0 run from the service line late in the frame to hand IU a four-point lead. UCLA tried to close late but a massive block from sophomore middle blocker Ella Boersema and a kill from freshman outside hitter Jaidyn Jager helped close out the victory.

IU’s monster block came alive when Boersema was inserted into the match in the third set. She came into the match and had a game-high six blocks. The Hoosiers racked up 13 rejections in total. Tatum had four stuffs to pair with her 17 kills and five digs. Jager (11 kills, 10 digs) and freshman setter Teodora Kričković (44 assists, 10 digs) each had a double-double against the Bruins.

History was made by the IU program on Saturday night in Los Angeles. For the first time in school history, IU has won back-to-back regular season games against ranked opponents. The win over UCLA was the ninth ranked win away from home in program history. Head coach Steve Aird has led IU to more top-25 wins away from home (5) than any other volleyball coach at IU.

How it Happened

• To finish off the Bruins, IU needed gutsy efforts from its whole team late in sets. After conceding a five-point lead in set three, the Hoosiers closed on a 3-0 run to win the frame. IU immediately trailed 9-2 in set four but orchestrated a 23-12 run to finish off the victory.

• Service pressure and a big block made all the difference. IU had an advantage in aces (5-2) and blocks (13-5) on Saturday evening. As well, the Hoosiers finished with more kills (57-56) and a higher hitting percentage (.262-.254).

• For the first time in program history, IU has won back-to-back regular season matches over top-25 teams. In the first four games of conference play, the Hoosiers have won three games against west coast programs. IU has also won back-to-back games over UCLA (2024 – W, 3-0 + 2025 – W, 3-1).

• Senior opposite hitter Avry Tatum recorded 17 kills in the win over her home state school – UCLA. It’s the 11th match this year that she’s hit at least .350. In 10 of those games, she had a double-digit kill effort as well. The veteran hitter is closing in on a massive milestone. She’s now just 35 kills away from 1,000 for her career.

• Senior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles had one of her finest matches of the season on Saturday evening. She recorded 18 kills on a .313 hitting percentage. Following the weekend, Alonso-Corcelles moved into the top-15 in program history in career kills (1,160).

• The Hoosiers continue to add to what has been a special beginning to the season. For the first time in 40 years (1985), IU is off to a 4-0 start in Big Ten play. It is one of just three undefeated teams in conference play and one of two (Nebraska) at 4-0 through the first two weeks of league play.

BOILERS FALL TO #22 ILLINOIS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Football fell 43-27 to No. 22 Illinois on Saturday afternoon in Ross-Ade Stadium.

The Boilermakers (2-3, 0-2 B1G) struck first with a 10-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown rush by quarterback Ryan Browne. However, the Fighting Illini (5-1, 2-1 B1G) responded with 24 unanswered points to pull ahead for good, retaining the Cannon Trophy.

The Purdue offense racked up 453 total yards thanks to another 300-yard game by Browne to go along with 151 yards on the ground.

Browne completed 30-of-50 passes for 302 yards and one touchdown in addition to his rushing touchdown on six carries for 22 yards.

Near the end of the first half, Browne found sophomore receiver Corey Smith wide open down the sideline for a 60-yard touchdown. A transfer from Tulsa, Smith hauled in his first touchdown as a Boilermaker and third of his young career.

Antonio Harris broke free midway through the third quarter with a career-long 41-yard run, scoring his first collegiate touchdown to bring the Boilers within nine. He led Purdue with 69 yards on four carries. Devin Mockobee also had an efficient day with 11 attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. His 23rd career touchdown came on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.

NOTRE  DAME FOOTBALL

IRISH RUN AWAY FROM BOISE STATE, 28-7

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame football team (3-2) rolled off 22 consecutive points to earn a 28-7 over Boise State (3-2) on a very warm and sunny early-fall day in Notre Dame Stadium.

The Fighting Irish run game keyed the victory with Jeremiyah Love pacing the way with 103 yards and a four-yard scoring run while Jadarian Price added 83 yards on eight carries and a 49-yard touchdown.

The game featured an uneven flow as the teams were whistled for a combined 24 penalties. The Irish defense persevered through the challenges, however, recording four sacks and holding the Broncos without points over the game’s final 35 minutes. Over those final 35 minutes the Irish defense intercepted four passes and recorded a fourth-down stop.

Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa led the Irish with eight tackles, 0.5 sacks and a key pass break up one of Notre Dame’s fourth-down stops. Leonard Moore, back in the Notre Dame lineup after missing the past two games with an injury, intercepted two of the four passes by the defense. Luke Talich and Tae Johnson notched the other interceptions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Notre Dame quickly marched down the field on its first possession with 24 combined passing yards to Jordan Faison and Will Pauling. Jeremiyah Love battled to the one-yard line on second down but starting right tackle Aamil Wagner was injured on the play. On the next play after the injury break Notre Dame shifted to a direct snap to Love. The Irish were called for a false start, however, and it ended up at third and goal from the five-yard line.

CJ Carr found Eli Raridon in the right flat where he was pushed out of bounds at the one-yard line. The Irish decided to go for it and went back to the direct snap to Love which was stopped for a loss of one and a turnover on downs.

Boise State’s first possession turned into a penalty fest. The Broncos were called for holding and an illegal snap, while the Irish were whistled for defensive holding and encroachment. In the end, solid defense on a third down pass by DeVonta Smith provided the Irish with the ball back after a 50-yard punt at their own 36.

Love burst through the middle for 36 yards on the second play of the drive and gained seven yards on second and 10. He was shaken up on the play and left the game, replaced by Jadarian Price who rushed for four yards on the third down conversion. The next play, Carr watched Pauling beat his one-on-one defender off the line and placed a pass perfectly on his outside shoulder for a 19-yard touchdown pass. BSU blocked the PAT attempt and the Irish lead was 6-0.

A third-down sack from Drayk Bowen ended Boise State’s next drive and a Faison 23-yard return looked to get the Irish in good position, but negative plays and penalties led to James Rendell’s first punt in over two games.

The Irish defense stopped the Broncos quickly and again, Notre Dame looked to have momentum when Carr faked a pass and ran for 28 yards. The drive stalled, however and on fourth and eight Carr adjusted his protection perfectly and had Pauling wide open in the end zone. The pass was wide and incomplete. The Notre Dame offense, which at this point in the game owned a 150-yard advantage on the stat sheet, had earned just a 6-0 lead.

The Broncos took advantage of the situation and drove down the field to take a 7-6 lead. The Irish had Boise State in jeopardy at third and 10 at midfield, but the Broncos converted, then hit a 28-yard pass that ended with a late hit out of bounds. The visiting team was suddenly at the Irish 10-yard line.

Notre Dame held on the first two plays inside the five. On third down, Boise executed a perfect fake run naked bootleg by the quarterback for an easy touchdown.

The lead did not last long. Notre Dame quickly scored through the hands of Malachi Fields, Carr and the legs of Love.

Fields picked up 22 yards on a catch and run on the first play. Love then ran for 14, caught an 11-yard pass and tacked on another five-yard rush. Carr then threw a frozen rope to Fields for a first down at the Boise State 16-yard line.

Love battled through several tackles to get eight yards. Carr looked to Pauling on a slant which drew a defensive holding call and placed the ball at the four-yard line. Love strolled into the end zone untouched one play later with a solid turnout block by center Ashton Craig.

The Irish then decided to get their blocked PAT point back and converted a two-point conversion when Carr rolled right and found Pauling wide open in the end zone.

Boise State would not go quietly in the first half. Aided by a roughing the passer penalty, the Broncos moved into Notre Dame territory before Tae Johnson intercepted an overthrown pass to end the scoring threat and the first 30 minutes.

Yet another penalty aided Notre Dame’s defensive stop to start the second half. Boise State looked like they moved deep into Irish territory but an illegal blind side block set the Broncos back toward midfield. Jaylen Sneed then sacked the quarterback on second down and Bryce Young provided pressure to force an errant pass and Boise was forced to punt. Notre Dame took over on its own 21-yard line after a short 20-yard boot.

The game action called for a methodical scoring drive for the Irish and that is exactly what they delivered. Faison caught a slant pass on third and five and fought back to the outside for eight yards. The Irish quickly snapped on the next play and Faison earned 11 more yards which was followed by a 14-yard run by Price and yet another first down catch by Faison.

Carr then looked to the right pylon for Fields, who was tackled by the defender to draw a flag and made a spectacular juggling catch. Unfortunately, right before Field was able to secure the ball his leg touched out of bounds. The defensive pass interference was assessed, the ball placed at the four yard line and Carr went right back to Fields for a six-yard touchdown on the fade pattern.

Boise State picked up a couple first downs on their next drive before Leonard Moore stepped in front of a receiver coming across the field to record Notre Dame’s second interception of the game.

Notre Dame’s next drive was doomed by back-to-back penalties including a holding call and a dubious offensive pass interference flag. Saddled with second and 37 the Irish would eventually punt it back to Boise State.

The Broncos drive was practically a carbon copy of Notre Dame’s penalty-ridden drive. BSU was called for an offensive pass interference call then a false start to bring up 1st and 30. Notre Dame intercepted a pass on the drive but it was negated by another questionable call, this time on a quarterback pressure that was called roughing the passer. The penalty gave the Broncos a first down.

The Irish defense refused to relent. Boise State moved just over midfield but was faced with fourth and two. Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa broke up a pass across the middle to end the Bronco scoring threat.

Searching for an insurance score Notre Dame received one by Jadarian Price. On the second play from scrimmage, Price burst through the middle, cut to his left and broke four tackles on his way to the end zone for a 49-yard score.

Notre Dame’s offense was unable to run out the clock but Moore closed the door with his second interception of the game – and fourth by the Irish – to put Notre Dame in victory formation at the end of the game.

IU INDY VOLLEYBALL

VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES WEEKEND SWEEP OF MILWAUKEE, 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis volleyball team put on an offensive show against Milwaukee on Saturday (Oct. 4), hitting .318 on the day in cruising to a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) over the Panthers inside a pink clad Jungle. The Jaguars wore pink in support of the Karen Wellington Foundation, while also distributing pink towels to fans in attendance. The crowd was treated to an offensive barrage from the outset on a day that the Jaguars extended their winning streak to three-in-a-row.

“I think we really got into a good rhythm,” head coach Andrew Kroger said. “Our offense was putting a lot of pressure on what they were doing. We also settled in from the service line and that was a big point of emphasis for us. If we can get them uncomfortable by putting pressure on them, both serving and attacking and not giving them easy balls, it’s really tough to keep up your level of execution.

“We were able to challenge them and they’re a really good team. That really accumulated and led to a good result at the end.”

Freshman Jillian Tippmann led the Jaguars with 15 kills and Ninah Miranda delivered 12 kills while hitting .476. Senior Morgan Ostrowski finished with 10 kills and junior Grace Purichia had 45 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Laura Roeder had a team-high 15 digs from her libero spot.

The Jags (9-8, 3-2 HL) never trailed in the opening set, getting three straight points to push an 11 all tie into a 14-11 advantage. Senior Jordyn Pax contributed an ace ahead of a Purichia kill to prompt a Milwaukee timeout. The Panthers crept back within two at 17-15 before Elle Patterson responded with a kill. Later, back-to-back Tippmann kills pushed the lead out to five before the Jags finished off a 25-19 opening set victory.

Like the first set, the Jags never trailed in set two and built a 9-4 lead, sparked by an Ostrowski solo block and a Patterson kill. Things got tight at 13-10 before Miranda and Tippmann sandwiched kills around a Laura Roeder service ace to extend the lead to six. The lead grew to 21-13 when Chloe Macias and Patterson combined on a block on a heels of a Milwaukee service error. The Panthers made things interesting by getting it to 23-20 before a Tippmann kill ended the guests’ momentum and a Milwaukee (3-15, 3-2 HL) attack error ended the set.

The third set was nip-and-tuck early before the Jags rattled off four straight points with Purichia on the service line. The lead grew to 17-10 on back-to-back Milwaukee attack errors, giving the Jags more than enough cushion to ultimately claim a 25-21 final set victory. Fittingly, Tippmann put down the winner, capping another double-digit kill effort.

“It feels really awesome. This is a very good team in our conference and we’ve just been working in practice on focusing and starting off strong, so I feel like that’s something we really implemented today and yesterday and we were just focusing on the little things. Trying to make every play perfect and I feel like we really did that,” Purichia said of Saturday’s win.

Bella Lipski led Milwaukee with 12 kills, hitting .647 for the match, and Kara Erdmann had a team-high 13 digs.

The Jaguars will return to action for a two-game trip to RMU next weekend when they face the Colonials on Friday (Oct. 10) and Saturday (Oct. 11). Both matches are scheduled to air on ESPN+.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL

CARDINALS BEST OHIO AT HOME TO OPEN MAC PLAY

MUNCIE, Ind. – Qian Magwood’s 43-yard reception at just under the one-minute mark in the fourth quarter awarded Ball State a 18-14 lead against Ohio. Redshirt freshman Donovan Hamilton’s grab on a successful two-point conversion sealed the victory for the Cardinals, opening Mid-American Conference play with a win over the defending conference champions, 20-14.

The Cardinals’ (2-3, 1-0 MAC) comeback began in the third quarter, limiting the Bobcats (3-3, 1-1 MAC) to a scoreless quarter on just 22 totals yards. Quarterback Kiael Kelly’s 13-yard rush into the endzone and a 22-yard field goal from Carson Holmer shrunk the deficit to four after giving up two scores to Ohio in the first half.

Defensive veteran Nathan Voorhis led the suffocating Ball State defense, capturing a career-high 3.5 sacks, along with eight tackles. His season total of 6.5 sacks has already eclipsed Ball State’s 2024 sack leader Riley Tolsma who recorded 5.5. The Ball State defense tallied six tackles for loss and three pass breakups on the afternoon. The defensive unit’s relentless pressure contributed to big plays down the stretch, including a safety in the fourth which brought the game to 14-12.

While Ohio’s offense led the charge in the contest’s first two quarters, securing two touchdowns on 262 yards, Ball State’s defense limited the Bobcats to just 95 yards in the second half of play.

Magwood recorded catches of 35 and 43 yards on his way to lead Ball State’s receiving unit, totaling 92 yards on four grabs. Nine different Ball State targets were found throughout the game.

On the ground, Kelly ran 96 yards on 21 attempts and broke through on multiple occasions to advance the Cardinals down the field.

The Cardinals out-rushed the Bobcats, and nearly out-passed them, while Kelly matched his career-high 17 completions, which he first recorded at Connecticut two weeks ago.

Ball State looks to continue its conference success when it travels to Western Michigan for action Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m.

Williams took it himself on a one-yard touchdown plunge to give SIU the three-touchdown lead eight minutes into the game.

The Sycamores fought back on Patterson’s nine-yard rushing touchdown on an 11-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by a 20-yard Osho carry, while Patterson found Bryan Domino for an 18-yard reception near midfield. Osho added his first touchdown run late midway through the second quarter on a 39-yard run answering an 83-yard touchdown pass from SIU’s Williams to Vinson Davis III.

Southern Illinois went up 38-14 just before the halftime break on Williams’ second rushing touchdown of the game. Osho and Riddle added touchdowns for the Sycamores in the second half, but Indiana State was unable to mount a comeback in the Missouri Valley Football opener loss.

The Sycamores recorded a season-high 322 rushing yards, marking the most by the Indiana State offense since 2019 when the Sycamores recorded 325 rushing yards back on November 23, 2019, at Missouri State.

Osho’s 211 rushing yards marked a new career-high for the Sycamore running back and the first 200-yard rushing game most by an Indiana State player since Plez Lawrence rushed for 203 yards on September 30, 2023, at Murray State.

Osho’s back-to-back 100-yard rushing games after following up a 134-yard effort at Montana (Sept. 20) with his 211 yards on Saturday at SIU, marked the first Indiana State running back to post back-to-back 100-yard games since Justin Dinka finished with 156 against North Dakota State and 159 at Youngstown State in back-to-back games over October 8-15, 2022.

Osho’s back-to-back multi-touchdown rushing games marked the first by an Indiana State running back since Ja’Quan Keys recorded at least two rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games in 2018 coming against South Dakota State, Missouri State, and Southern Illinois over October 6-20, 2018.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State volleyball fell at Evansville on Saturday evening 3-1 (17-25, 16-25, 25-11, 20-25), falling back to an even 8-8 on the season and 2-2 in Missouri Valley play.

Kira Holland led the Sycamores with 16 kills, adding in nine digs and a pair of blocks. Hadley Hardersen finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs. Emily Weber recorded 29 assists, while Chloe Gilley led the defensive effort with 24 digs. Ella Scott joined Holland with two block assists.

Set 1 | Evansville 25, Indiana State 17

Evansville jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never looked back. Later in the set, Indiana State closed the gap to three points with a pair of three-point runs, highlighted by kills from Kimora Whetstone and Hardersen, but Evansville closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the opening set.

Set 2 | Evansville 25, Indiana State 16

It was more of the same in the second same, but it took some time to get there. The Trees and Aces were tied three different times until eventually the game was at 10 apiece. Evansville took control of the set on a 12-3 run with seven kills in the stretch to lead 22-13. Indiana State scored only one point of their own, a kill by Holland, while the other two points came from service errors by UE. The Aces took the set 25-16.

Set 3 | Indiana State 25, Evansville 11

The third set seemed like a whole different match. The Sycamores took control from the start via a Hardersen service ace and never trailed in the set. The Trees jumped out to 10-4 lead, then to a 16-5 lead midway through the set; the run ended at 12-3 as Weber recorded a service run of 10 straight while Scott, Holland, and Hardersen all tallied at least a skill in the streak. Weber executed a setter dump to record the 24th point, then an attack error by UE gave Indiana State the set victory.

Evansville hit -.135 in the set as Indiana State forced 10 attack errors and notched six blocks.

Set 4 | Evansville 25, Indiana State

Indiana State looked to force a fifth set early on, holding a 7-3 lead after Holland scored four straight points for the Trees via kills. Evansville stiffened up and swing the momentum in their favor off a 13-6 scoring stretch, taking a 17-14 lead towards the end of the set. The set ended fairly evenly – both teams finishing rallies with kills but seemingly going hand-in-hand in both service and attack errors. A pair of kills couldn’t turn the tide for the Sycamores, and Evansville hung onto the five-point lead to win the set 25-20 and cap the evening with a 3-1 match victory.

The fourth set was the Sycamores’ best set in terms of hitting percentage, but Evansville topped the Trees in the set with their best set of the evening, swinging at a .405 clip.

News & Notes

The Sycamores finished with 79 total digs, the second-best effort of the season behind only the 91-dig match against Chattanooga on September 19. Both that match and the third-best match (71 digs on August 29) were five-setters.

Junior middle blocker Ella Scott surpassed 500 career kills. She also recorded a career-best eight digs.

Sophomore Chloe Gilley recorded a career-high 24 digs, breaking her previous best of 21.

Freshman Hadley Hardersen notched back-to-back double-doubles with 11 kills and 16 digs this evening. It marks her third-straight double-digit kill match and her sixth double-digit dig match.

Freshman Corinne Knapp made her collegiate debut in the fourth set.

Indiana State recorded 42 kills in a four-set match, the fewest number of kills since tallying 34 in the win over Merrimack (which was a three-set match) on September 6. It is the lowest this season in four-set matches.

The Sycamores committed 25 attack errors for the second-straight night. Indiana State also recorded 25 one day ago at Southern Illinois in a four-setter. Twenty five attack errors ties for the second most this season (27 twice, both on September 5 against SIUE and NIU.

Indiana State scored 49 total points (third lowest of the season, no matter the number of sets played).

‘DONS BEAT THE BAY IN BECKY BARRETT BIRTHDAY BASH

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Becky Barrett had a career-high 27 digs, six assists, an ace and a kill on her birthday (Saturday, Oct. 4) to help Purdue Fort Wayne beat Green Bay 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 29-27, 25-16) on the Arnie Ball Court.

Barrett’s day was highlighted at the 13-11 mark in the fourth set, when she dug out a Phoenix attack and her dig clipped the net and trickled over for a kill. It was the second kill of her career.

While Barrett led the way defensively for the Mastodons, Riley Rosneck was a huge threat offensively. She finished with a career-high 25 kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage. She had seven of her kills in the first and fourth sets each, six in the second and five in the third. Trinity Rye and Mya Plemons were good second and third options, finishing with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Haiden Means dished out 48 assists and had 14 digs for a double-double.

There were 38 total ties and 22 lead changes in the four-set match.

Green Bay jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first frame, but the Mastodons chipped away, eventually putting together a 10-2 run to lead 18-15. Green Bay answered with a run of its own to go up 21-19, but Rosneck started a 6-1 run to win the set.

Like the first set, Green Bay and the Mastodons traded significant runs, but the Phoenix had a 3-1 push at the end to even the match.

In the third, the familiar runs appeared again, with a 7-1 stretch by the ‘Dons being what got them to 20 first. From there though, Green Bay had a 6-1 run to go up 23-22. After that, both teams had at two set point chances, but the ‘Dons had a 3-0 run with a kill then ace from Means, and a kill from Plemons to win the set.

After an 11-10 lead for GB in the fourth, the home team had a 5-0 run to take a lead they never yielded. It was later supplemented by a 9-2 finishing run.

Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 3-13, 1-4 Horizon League while Green Bay fell to 4-12, 3-2. The Mastodons will head to Oakland next weekend (Oct. 10-11) for a pair of Horizon League contests.

EVANSVILLE MEN’S SOCCER

ACES DOWN WESTERN MICHIGAN FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE WIN

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team moved to 2-0 in MVC play for the first time since 2016 on Saturday night, taking down Western Michigan by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Aces extend their unbeaten streak to six and their winning streak to three. The streak marks Evansville’s first unbeaten streak of six matches in the single season since 2009.

Evansville struck early for the second match in a row, with Tancredi Fadda (Monza, Italy/University of Milan) finding the back of the net with a rocket in the fourth minute for his second goal of the season. The goal came off assists from Nacho Diaz-Caneja (Coruña, Spain/Oregon State) and Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro).

Fadda was active throughout the remainder of the first half, tallying two more shots, but the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.

The Purple Aces struck again shortly after the halftime intermission, when Nate Roberts (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) earned a penalty by drawing a foul in the box in the 50th minute. Martin Wurschmidt (Stavern, Norway/Thor Heyerdahl VGS) stepped to the spot and buried a shot past a diving Broncos keeper to make it 2-0. The penalty goal was Wurschmidt’s second of the season.

From there, the Evansville defense held strong to post their fourth shutout of the season. Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) made five saves in the final 20 minutes of action to tie his season-high and record his third shutout in a row. Over the last five matches, Mroz has allowed just one goal.

“Obviously, getting an early goal really helps,” said Head Coach Robbe Tarver. “It allowed us to settle into the game a little bit. I don’t remember the last time that we were 2-0 in conference, so that puts us in a really good position to achieve the goal of making the MVC Tournament. That’s the way we are going to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, we have to do that first. To have six points after two games is massive for us.”

“Nothing is done for this season, we need to keep going.”

With the win, Evansville moves to 4-2-5 overall and 2-0 in MVC play, marking the first time the Aces have opened conference play with shutouts of 2-0 or better. Evansville currently sits in first place in the MVC standings as the only team with two wins. UE returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference match-up at Northwestern. Kick-off is set for 6:30 PM.

VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER

SOCCER FALLS AT HOME TO UNI SATURDAY

The Valpo soccer team struck first against visiting UNI on Saturday evening at Brown Field, as Molly O’Rear (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) found the back of the net in the 20th minute, but the Panthers struck for the equalizer late in the first half and then the eventual match-winner in the 73rd minute to emerge 2-1 victors.

How It Happened

O’Rear put the Beacons on top Saturday inside of 20 minutes. Positioned just outside the top of the box in the center of the park, the senior took a pass from the left flank from Tatum Coleman (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), turned and fired a left-footed shot inside the right post. UNI goalkeeper Thordis Melsted got hands to the effort, but was unable to keep it out as Valpo took the 1-0 lead.

A defensive miscue gave UNI’s Haylee Braun a 1-v-1 effort with Valpo goalkeeper Kate Sheridan (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) in the 37th minute, and Braun was able to convert to level the match at 1-1, where it stayed at halftime.

Braun was on the spot for the match-winner in the 73rd minute, making a back-post run and knocking home a pass from Kylie Knief for the decisive goal.

Inside the Match

O’Rear’s goal was her fourth of the year, matching her total from her freshman season. It was the 15th goal involvement of the senior’s career (8g, 7a).

Coleman’s assist ties her for team-high honors this year, as it was her third helper.

UNI held an 11-10 advantage in shots and put seven of its efforts on goal to Valpo’s four. Sheridan made five saves in net for the Beacons.

VALPO FOOTBALL

LENDINO’S BIG FIRST HALF A HIGHLIGHT IN ROAD LOSS TO DEFENDING PFL CHAMPION DRAKE

The Valparaiso University football program incurred a 41-0 defeat on Saturday, starting the Pioneer Football League portion of the season against two-time defending conference champion Drake. Redshirt sophomore defensive back Nic Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) was a major bright spot for the Beacons, racking up a team-high 12 tackles plus an interception.

How It Happened

The Valpo defense started the game by forcing a three-and-out, and then a short Drake punt set up the Beacons with favorable field position as they started their opening drive at the 40-yard line of the Bulldogs.

A 10-yard completion to Micah Mackay (Zionsville, Ind. / Lutheran) had Valpo knocking on the door of the red zone, but an interception brought the drive to a halt.

The Bulldogs went 70 yards on seven plays on the drive that followed the pick, culminating with a 34-yard field goal by Harry Balke to start the scoring. A key pass breakup from Connor Cervantes (Griffith, Ind. / Griffith) on 3rd-and-3 from the Valpo 16 helped keep the Bulldogs out of the end zone.

Defense ruled the day for the remainder of the first quarter. After the field goal, Drake had two more first-quarter drives, and both resulted in punts, the last one after a three-and-out from the Valpo D. Lendino accrued six tackles in the first quarter alone.

The Valpo defense started the second quarter with its back against the wall after a blocked punt. The Bulldogs took advantage of the short field, scoring on a 2-yard TD run by Woodson to make it 10-0 with 10:39 on the second-quarter clock.

It stayed 10-0 until Balke made his second field goal, this one from 38, to build the Drake lead to 13-0 at the 1:39 mark of the second quarter.

Lendino capped his stellar first half by making an interception at midfield with eight seconds on the clock, snuffing out Drake’s effort to add more before the half. The Beacons took over, but after a sack they elected to head into the locker room to regroup with the deficit at 13. Lendino had 11 tackles including eight solos and a pick in the first half.

Drake added on when Jacob Auen scored on a nine-yard pick six early in the third quarter to make it 20-0.

Drake’s Nick Herman found paydirt on a one-yard touchdown plunge with 3:36 left in the third to extend the lead to 27-0. Herman added a 27-yard TD dash late in the third quarter, then Foley had a 25-yard grab from Inagawa for another score to make it 41-0 with 3:32 left in the fourth, which stood as the final.

Inside the Game

Lendino’s 12 tackles marked a career high, eclipsing his previous mark of 10 on Sept. 28, 2024 at Morehead State.

Lendino’s interception was his second of the season and the fourth of his collegiate career.

Redshirt junior Devin Yeats (Hampshire, Ill. / Hampshire) had a team-high four catches for 34 yards.

Freshman Micah Markley (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota West) turned in six tackles, as did junior Mark Johnson (Nashville, Tenn. / Lipscomb).

The pressure applied by Drake’s defensive front was a big factor as the Beacons were sacked seven times and threw three interceptions.

Drake improved to 19-1 in its last 20 PFL games.

Valpo was shut out for the first time since Nov. 19, 2022, also against Drake, that one a 24-0 defeat.

Up Next

Valpo (1-4, 0-1 PFL) will host Dayton at 1 p.m. at Brown Field on Saturday. For ticket information, visit tickets.valpoathletics.com.

HOUNDS OVERWHELM CARDINALS, 63-17

INDIANAPOLIS – The 19th-ranked UIndy football team rolled to a 63-17 win over William Jewell Saturday night at Key Stadium. Senior quarterback Gavin Sukup delivered a special performance—even to his standards. The two-time reigning GLVC Player of the Year racked up 379 total yards and six touchdown passes in the one-sided win.

The Greyhounds scored early and often Saturday, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first seven minutes on the way to a 42-point first half. By the time the dust settled, UIndy lit up the scoreboard for 63 points, its highest total since it hung 70 points on Quincy in October of 2021.

Individually, Sukup put up some historic numbers in front of the Key Stadium faithful. He matched the school record for touchdown passes in a game (6), became just the third UIndy quarterback in recorded history with 100-plus rushing yards in a game (105), and also joined a club of only four Greyhounds all-time with 7,000 career passing yards.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

NO. 14 KNIGHTS DOMINATE ROAD VICTORY AT MADONNA

Livonia, Mich. – After a deadlock score of 7-7 in the first quarter, the 14th-ranked Marian football team flexed their muscle and scored on nine consecutive drives in a runaway 58-7 victory against Madonna on Saturday afternoon. Marian’s road victory improves the team’s record to 4-1 overall on the season.

The Knights got off to a slow start, going three and out on their first series of the game before fumbling away their second possession of the game. The defense picked up the offense and forced two quick punts, and on the third drive, Marian got it rolling as Tristan Polk capped a 96-yard scoring drive with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Coverstone.

Madonna would immediately answer and put Marian in a bind as Kwame Miller squirted through the line on the next play from scrimmage, rushing 70 yards for a touchdown.

The score snapped Marian into a new groove, as the Knights found a new gear and generated five consecutive scoring drives to end the first half. Keagan La Belle finished off the first of three first-half touchdowns with a 10-yard rush near the end of the first quarter, and in the second quarter, Hunter Newman plowed in from six yards out for his second score of the season to make it a 20-7 lead.

Marian’s final three scores of the half came within the final four minutes of the half, with the first coming on a 29-yard field goal from Kenny Curry. The defense got the ball back with under two minutes to play, and the offense executed a two-minute drill that saw La Belle haul a 12-yard touchdown pass from Polk. A Cade Houseman interception on the next play of scrimmage put the Marian offense immediately back on the field. The Knights capped the 33-yard drive with La Belle’s third touchdown of the half, finishing a 30-point run to end the half with the lead surging to 37-7.

The second half started much as the first ended, with the defense forcing a punt as the unit led by Clay Emmrich halted the Crusader attack. Another scoring drive followed for Marian to extend their run, as Polk tossed his third touchdown of the game to Jake Reichard.

Reichard’s score came with 7:21 to play in the third quarter, and he logged his 100th career reception, becoming the 10th player at Marian to record 100 catches. Reichard’s score also moved him into 10th all-time in career receiving touchdowns at Marian.

Marian’s reserves came on and capped nine consecutive scoring drives with two fourth quarter touchdowns, under the direction of quarterback Ben Schoster. Uriah Buchanan scored the first of two fourth quarter touchdowns on a five-yard scamper, while with 6:21 remaining, the backup quarterback connected with Zarik Chmielewski on a 34-yard touchdown, finalizing the scoring in the 58-7 final score.

The Knights owned nearly every aspect of the final box score, out-gaining the Crusaders 543-159. Marian threw for 304 yards as a team, while running for another 239 yards.

Polk finished the game with 253 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Schoster threw for 51 yards and one score. Alijah Price led the running backs with 12 carries for 81 yards, while La Belle had 11 carries for 70 and two touchdowns. The senior back had over 100 all-purpose yards, catching another three balls for 44 yards and a touchdown. Jameson Coverstone had a team-high 79 receiving yards, and Reichard had 33 yards and one touchdown on four catches.

Defensively, Reis Walker led the team in tackles with four, while Zion Woods was one of several Knights with three total stops. Houseman and Downey each had interceptions in the win, and Tylen Cunningham and Logan Carrington each had one sack.

Marian will finish their non-conference play next weekend, traveling to (RV) Taylor for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Trojans.

A shell hits the former Giants’ third baseman while leading a unit to rescue the Lost Battalion, a contingent of roughly 554 soldiers of the United States 77th Division isolated by the German forces after an American attack in the Argonne Forest.

1929    On the season’s next-to-last day, Reds reliever Rube Ehrhardt wins his first and only start, allowing five hits and issuing one walk when he blanks the first-place Cubs at Redland Field, 9-0. The shutout, which takes 75 minutes to complete, will be the 34-year-old right-hander’s final major league appearance.

1941    In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and two strikes in Game 4 of the World Series, Tommy Henrich appears struck out, ending the game, but ‘Old Reliable’ reaches first base on Mickey Owen’s passed ball. The catcher’s blunder turns a sure 4-3 Brooklyn win into a heart-breaking 7-4 loss to the Yankees.

1942    At Yankee Stadium, the Cardinals stun the baseball world by beating the defending World Champions, 2-1, to capture the World Series in five games. Rookie right-hander Johnny Beazley (21-6) goes the distance, limiting the Bronx Bombers to seven hits to post his second complete-game victory of the Fall Classic.

1947    Al Gionfriddo, inserted in left field for defensive purposes, makes one of the most memorable catches in World Series history when he robs Joe DiMaggio of an extra-base hit with two men on base in the sixth inning. 1949    Dodger right-hander Don Newcombe, becoming the first black to start a World Series contest, allows only four hits in Game 1, including Tommy Henrich’s home run leading off the bottom of the ninth, giving the Yankees a 1-0 walk-off victory in the Bronx ballpark. ‘Old Reliable’s shot to right field, the first game-ending home run in the history of the Fall Classic, gives Allie Reynolds the complete-game win, and it is Casey Stengel’s first postseason victory

1951    Mickey Mantle’s season ends after severely injuring his right knee when his cleats get caught on a drainage cap in Game 2 of the World Series. Joe DiMaggio’s abrupt call for Willie Mays’ fly ball in center field in the Yankee Stadium contest leads many to believe that the last-minute decision contributed to the torn cartilage suffered by the 19-year-old rookie right fielder.

1953    In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 6, the Yankees win their record fifth consecutive World Series when Billy Martin singles, scoring Hank Bauer to give New York a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory over the Dodgers. The Bronx Bombers’ second baseman, named the Series MVP, bats .500 in the six contests, collecting a record-tying 12 hits to equal Babe Ruth’s mark, and compiles 23 total bases, the most in Fall Classic history.

1956    U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower indicates he doesn’t favor the Washington Senators shifting their franchise to another city and would like to see the District of Columbia get a new baseball stadium, a proposal the Congress has been working on for the past decade. According to Cal Griffith, who has acknowledged his willingness to stay in the nation’s capital if a new stadium plan is approved, other municipalities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Louisville, have made attractive offers to attract his team.

1957    In the first World Series game ever played in Milwaukee, native son Tony Kubek hits two home runs in the 12-3 rout of the hometown Braves, putting his Bronx Bombers ahead two games to one in the Fall classic. The Yankee shortstop becomes the second rookie to hit two round-trippers in a Fall Classic game, a feat first accomplished by Charlie Keller, who blasted a pair of homers in Game 3 in 1939.

1960    At Forbes Field, Roger Maris becomes the seventh major leaguer to homer in his first World Series at-bat. The right fielder’s first-inning round-tripper off Vernon Law gets the Yankees off to a good start, but the Pirates win Game 1 of the Fall Classic, 6-4.

1960    In Game 1 of the World Series, Bill Mazeroski’s two-run fifth-inning home run off Jim Coates proves to be the difference when the Pirates beat the Yankees at Forbes Field, 6-4. The victory marks Pittsburgh’s first Fall Classic win since 1925 when the Bucs became the World Champions by taking Game 7 from the Senators.

1963    In Game 4, Mickey Mantle ties Babe Ruth’s record with his 15th World Series home run. In the seventh inning, the Yankees slugger turns around a Sandy Koufax fastball to tie the score, but the blast isn’t enough to stave off the Dodgers’ Fall Classic sweep of the Bronx Bombers.

1966    Reliever Moe Drabowsky ties a World Series record by striking out six consecutive batters in the Orioles’ 5-2 Game 1 victory at Dodger Stadium. Brooks and Frank Robinson hit back-to-back homers in the first inning.

1977    Glenn Burke greets Dusty Baker on the dugout steps to congratulate his Dodger teammate for hitting a grand slam against the Phillies in Game 2 of the 1977 NLCS. The greeting, consisting of the two players extending their right arms above their heads and slapping their hands to make a resounding clap, is considered the first ‘high five’ in baseball history.

1980    The Yankees break the American League regular-season attendance record when 35,879 fans watch the team beat the Tigers, 2-1, in the season finale, bringing the final total to 2,627,417. 1980    Reaching first on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh in the 4-0 win over the Twins, Royals’ leadoff hitter Willie Wilson establishes a major league record for the most at-bats in a season with 705. The Kansas City outfielder will collect 230 hits and score 133 runs for the division-winning club.

1980    Brewers’ outfielder Ben Ogilvie becomes the first non-American-born player to lead the American League in home runs. On the last day of the season, the 31-year-old Panamanian goes deep off Oakland’s Rick Langford for his 41st homer, which ties Reggie Jackson for the most round-trippers in the Junior Circuit.

1980    In a duel between two 19-game winners on the last day of the season, Scott McGregor enters the 20-win circle for the first and only time when he bests Len Barker in the Orioles’ 7-1 victory over the Indians. The Cleveland right-hander, who gives up six runs in five innings to finish the campaign with a 19-12 record, will never again come close to being a 20-game winner.

1991    On the next-to-last day of the season, the fourth-place Mariners whitewash the White Sox, 10-0, for their 83rd win of the campaign. The Kingdome victory assures the team of their first winning season in the 14-year history of the franchise.

1991    Twenty-three-year-old right-hander Scott Erickson becomes a 20-game winner in his sophomore season when he hurls six scoreless innings in the Twins’ 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays at the Metrodome. The Prince of Darkness, a nickname for using a black glove and wearing dark socks on the days he pitches, compiles a 20–8 record and a 3.18 ERA for the eventual World Champs.

1993    Bob Watson replaces Bill Wood as the Astros’ general manager, making the former Houston player the first black GM in baseball history. Bill Lucas had performed similar duties for the Braves in the late 1970s but never officially held the title.

1999    Randy Johnson suffers his sixth consecutive loss in postseason play when the Mets beat the Diamondbacks, 8-4, in Game 1 of NLDS. 2000    In Game 2 of the NLDS, the Mets rebound from J.T. Snow’s pinch-hit three-run game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth, when Jay Payton’s tenth-inning base hit drives in the eventual winning run to beat the Giants, 5-4. After giving up the devastating blow, New York closer Armando Benitez gets credit for the Pacific Bell Park victory.

2001    Arizona’s Albie Lopez hurls a three-hit shutout to beat the Brewers at Miller Park, 5-0. The Diamondback victory clinches a tie for the NL West flag, and with the win, the 30-year-old right-hander avoids becoming the first 20-game loser since Brian Kingman accomplished the feat in 1980.

2001    The Seattle Mariners record their 115th victory when they beat Texas, 6-2, at Safeco Field, breaking the 1998 Yankee record for most wins in an American League season. The team will tie the 1906 Cubs for the major league record of 116 wins when they add their final victory tomorrow in the next-to-last contest of the campaign.

2001    In the longest nine-inning game in major league history, Barry Bonds breaks and then extends the mark for home runs in a season during the 4 hours and 27 minutes, 11-10 loss to the Dodgers at Pac Bell Park. The Giant outfielder connects off Dodger starter Chan Ho Park to break Mark McGwire’s 1998 record of 70 and then homers again in his next at-bat to extend his record to 72.

2001    The Braves maul the Marlins, 20-3, to clinch the National League East title and become the first team in professional sports to win ten consecutive division titles. The Boston Celtics (1957-65) and Los Angeles Lakers (1982-90) won nine in a row.

2001    On the last day of the season, 38-year-old Jamie Moyer (20-6) becomes the oldest first-time 20-game winner when the Mariners beat Texas at Safeco Field, 6-2. The Seattle southpaw will also compile a 21-7 record in 2003.

2002    The Angels win a playoff series for the first time in its 42-year-old history when they beat the Yankees, 9-5, to take the ALDS 3 games to 1. The postseason appearance is the first for the Halos since 1986 when, after being a strike away in Game 5 of the ALCS from advancing to the World Series, the team lost to the Red Sox in seven games.

2005    According to his uncle and a witness, Nomar Garciaparra, the former Red Sox shortstop jumped into Boston Harbor, pulling two women in danger from the water. The two-time American League batting champ responded when he heard the splashes and cries for help in his Charlestown condominium.

2006    At Game 2 of the NLCS played at Petco Park, Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, who recently became baseball’s all-time saves leader, catches the ceremonial first pitch thrown by Lee Smith, the reliever he surpassed with his 479th save. The two ‘firemen’ exchange autographed baseballs after the toss.

2009    The Indians, with six games left on the schedule, announce they have dismissed Eric Wedge, their manager for the past seven years. The Cleveland skipper, whose firing was no surprise, asks to remain in the dugout to manage the fifth-place Tribe for the remainder of the season.

2010    Hanshin Tigers outfielder Matt Murton breaks Ichiro’s Japanese record for the most hits in a single season when he strokes his 211th hit of the year, a two-run single in a game against the Yakult Swallows. The 29-year-old former major leaguer, a 2003 first-round draft pick of the Red Sox who became part of a trade to the Cubs in a four-team deal that included Nomar Garciaparra, also played with the A’s before being released by the Rockies last season.

2011    During the fifth inning of Game 4 of the NLDS against the Cardinals, a squirrel runs across home plate just as Phillies’ right-hander Roy Oswalt delivers a pitch to Skip Schumaker. Umpire Angel Hernandez calls a ball, much to the chagrin of the right-hander and Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel, who believes that “no pitch” should be the call due to the distraction caused by the grey rodent, immortalized by the Redbirds fans as the “rally squirrel.”

2012    In the first NL one-game winner-take-all wild-card playoff, the Cardinals beat the hometown Braves, 6-3, in a game best remembered for a disputed infield fly rule call in the eighth inning. The irate Turner Field fans show their displeasure with the umpires’ decision on what appears to be a critical Redbird error on a dropped pop fly in the outfield by littering the playing field with debris, causing a 19-minute delay when the ground crew cleans up the assorted trash.

2014    The Royals complete a three-game sweep of the ALDS, beating the Angels at Kauffman Stadium, 8-3. The victory advances Kansas City to the league championship series for the first time since the team played in the postseason en route to winning a world championship in 1985.

2016    Giants southpaw Madison Bumgarner goes the distance, throwing a 3-0 shutout against the Mets in the winner-take-all National League Wild Card Game. Conor Gillaspie’s three-run homer off Jeurys Familia in the top of the ninth breaks a scoreless tie, wasting a great start by Noah Syndergaard, who had matched zeros with the San Francisco postseason legend for the first seven innings of the Citi Field contest.

2020    In the ALDS, Shane McClanahan takes the mound against the Yankees, becoming the first pitcher and fifth player to make his major league debut in the postseason. The Rays’ 23-year-old southpaw follows Bug Holliday (10/17/1885), Mark Kiger (10/13/2013), Adalbert Mondesi (10/30/2015), and Alex Kirilloff (9/30/2020).

2022    On the season’s final day, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman goes 3-for-4, falling one percentage point shy of capturing the National League batting crown. Jeff McNeil of the Mets, who sat out the season finale, finishes first with a .326 batting average.
