DODGERS KNOT WORLD SERIES ON YOSHINOBU YAMAMOTO’S GEM VS. JAYS

TORONTO — Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered a complete-game gem, Will Smith and Max Muncy homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Saturday night to knot the World Series at a game apiece.

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series will be played Monday at Los Angeles.

Yamamoto (3-1) allowed one run, four hits and no walks while striking out eight. With the game tied 1-1 in the seventh, Smith (three RBIs) and Muncy each hit solo homers.

Los Angeles opened the scoring in the first inning against Kevin Gausman (2-2). Freddie Freeman ripped a two-out double into the right field corner and scored on Smith’s single to center.

The Blue Jays threatened in the bottom of the inning when George Springer led off with a double and Nathan Lukes singled. Yamamoto escaped the jam with two strikeouts and a lineout.

Toronto tied it in the third. Springer was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He took third on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s one-out single to deep left and scored on Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly to center.

Game 2 settled into a pitchers’ duel.

Gausman retired 17 in a row until Smith smashed a 3-2 fastball to left with one out in the seventh for his first home run of the postseason. With two outs, Muncy hit his second homer of the postseason, a blast to left on a 2-2 fastball.

Louis Varland replaced Gausman, who allowed three runs, four hits and no walks while striking out six in 6 2/3 innings.

Varland gave up one-out singles to Andy Pages and Shohei Ohtani in the eighth. Mookie Betts walked to load the bases and Jeff Hoffman took over from Varland. Hoffman’s wild pitch scored Pages. Freeman was intentionally walked to load the bases again. Toronto could not complete the double play on Smith’s fielder’s-choice grounder to shortstop and another run scored.

Yamamoto struck out the side in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth to complete his 105-pitch effort, retiring the last 20 batters he faced.

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: NO. 8 OLE MISS RALLIES FOR SIGNATURE WIN AT NO. 13 OKLAHOMA

Trinidad Chambliss threw for 315 yards and a touchdown and Kewan Lacy ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 8 Ole Miss to a 34-26 Southeastern Conference win over No. 13 Oklahoma on Saturday in Norman, Okla.

Chambliss connected with tight end Trace Bruckler for an 8-yard score to cap an 11-play, 75-yard, fourth-quarter drive and give the Rebels (7-1, 4-1 SEC) a 31-26 lead with 11:33 remaining. Ole Miss had been trailing 26-25 after giving up a 25-13 second-half lead.

The Sooners had a chance late, holding the Rebels to a field goal after a fumbled punt return gave the Rebels a short field. Oklahoma drove to the Ole Miss 30 but couldn’t get any closer, as John Mateer threw consecutive incomplete passes on third and fourth down after the two-minute timeout to give the ball back to the Rebels.

Mateer finished 17-of-31 passing for 223 yards and a touchdown for Oklahoma (6-2, 2-2 SEC), while Xavier Robinson ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

No. 2 Indiana 56, UCLA 6

Fernando Mendoza threw for three touchdowns Saturday and ran for a fourth, as the No. 2 Hoosiers walloped the Bruins in Bloomington, Ind.

Mendoza shrugged off a slow start to complete 15 of 22 passes for 168 yards. Roman Hemby added 81 yards and a pair of scores on 17 carries, as Indiana (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) rolled up 475 total yards, converting 12 of 16 third downs.

Nico Iamaleava struggled all game for UCLA (3-5, 3-2), hitting only 13 of 27 passes for 113 yards and a pair of interceptions. He was under the gun from the start, as he was sacked on the game’s first play from scrimmage and intercepted on the second one.

No. 3 Texas A&M 49, No. 20 LSU 25

Marcel Reed threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores, KC Concepcion caught one of the scoring passes and added a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown and the Aggies routed the Tigers in Baton Rouge, La.

Reed rushed for 108 yards, passed for 202 and overcame two interceptions as Texas A&M (8-0, 5-0 SEC) outscored LSU 35-7 in the second half.

Garrett Nussmeier completed 22 of 35 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown and was sacked five times as the Tigers (5-3, 2-3) lost for the third time in four games.

No. 4 Alabama 29, South Carolina 22

Germie Bernard scored on a 25-yard direct snap with 34 seconds remaining to help the Crimson Tide rally to a win over the Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C.

Bernard also had a late touchdown catch and DaShawn Jones registered a pick-six as the Crimson Tide (7-1, 5-0 SEC) ripped off their seventh straight victory. Ty Simpson completed 24 of 43 passes with 253 yards and a second touchdown pass to Josh Cuevas, while Deonte Lawson forced a fumble that set up the winning points.

South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers completed 18 of 32 passes for 222 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a huge lost fumble. Sellers also rushed for a game-high 67 yards and a touchdown as the Gamecocks (3-5, 1-5) lost for the fifth time in six games.

No. 6 Oregon 21, Wisconsin 7

The Ducks overcame the loss of starting quarterback Dante Moore for almost all of the second half and a slow start on offense, defeating the Badgers at rainy Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

Oregon (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) scored touchdowns on its final drive of the first half and first drive of the second, and it was more than enough to hand Wisconsin its sixth consecutive loss. Moore, who had been in the Heisman Trophy conversation earlier this season, went down with a bloody nose after being tackled on a run early in the third quarter. He returned to the sideline but was without his helmet the rest of the way. Brock Thomas relieved Moore and led the Ducks on a pair of touchdown drives in the second half that secured the win for Oregon.

The Ducks’ defense kept the Badgers (2-6, 0-5) off the board until Lance Mason caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Simmons with 7:57 to play in the game. The touchdown ended Wisconsin’s run of 11 quarters without a single point. Simmons completed 7 of 21 passes for 86 yards with a touchdown and interception. Running back Gideon Ituka had 85 rushing yards on 21 carries.

No. 7 Georgia Tech 41, Syracuse 16

Haynes King recorded three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores to guide the Yellow Jackets to a resounding triumph over the Orange in Atlanta.

King authored a crisp 25-of-31 passing performance for 304 yards, while adding 91 yards on 12 carries to help Georgia Tech (8-0, 5-0 ACC) stay perfect on the season. Jordan Allen caught a team-high six balls for 67 yards, while Josh Beetham had two receiving touchdowns.

Rickie Collins was 17-of-29 passing for 224 yards with a touchdown for Syracuse (3-5, 1-4), which dropped its fourth straight game. Darrell Gill Jr. had five catches for 79 yards and a score to pace the Orange receivers.

No. 9 Miami 42, Stanford 7

Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for a career-high three touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes to a win over the Cardinal in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Fletcher Jr. totaled 106 yards on 23 carries to help Miami (6-1, 2-1 ACC) break open a close game by scoring the game’s final 42 points. The Hurricanes’ defense forced a pair of turnovers and QB Carson Beck bounced back from a dismal performance in last week’s loss to Louisville to complete 21 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown.

Stanford (3-5, 2-3) has still not won back-to-back games this season and dropped to 0-5 on the road. QB Ben Gulbranson put Stanford ahead with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Caden High, but Stanford mustered only 70 total yards following that opening series. Gulbranson was held to only 50 yards passing and threw two costly interceptions.

No. 10 Vanderbilt 17, No. 15 Missouri 10

Diego Pavia dove into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left to give the Commodores a victory over the Tigers in Nashville, Tenn.

Pavia struggled all afternoon but still pulled out the home win. The Heisman Trophy candidate finished with 10 completions in 19 passing attempts for 129 yards with an interception for Vanderbilt (7-1, 3-1 SEC), which is 7-1 for the first time since 1941. He rushed for 20 yards on eight carries.

Missouri quarterback Matt Zollers, a true freshman who had thrown only six passes in his college career, entered in the third quarter after starting quarterback Beau Pribula suffered a leg injury and was carted off the field. Zollers completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and directed a late 74-yard drive which fell just short as the Tigers (6-2, 2-2) attempted to tie the game.

No. 11 BYU 41, Iowa State 27

The Cougars capitalized on multiple Cyclones mistakes and held them without a touchdown in the second half en route to a victory in Ames, Iowa.

Bear Bachmeier and Parker Kingston linked up often for BYU (8-0, 5-0 Big 12), connecting seven times for 133 yards and two scores. Overall, the true freshman Bachmeier completed 22 of 35 passes for 307 yards and two TDs and ran for a team-high 49 yards and a score. Chase Roberts added eight grabs for 128 yards.

Iowa State (5-3, 2-3), which led 24-10 in the second quarter before losing the lead in the third, were outscored 14-0 in the final frame .Quarterback Rocco Becht finished 24-of-36 passing for 311 yards with a TD and three interceptions. Carson Hansen, who returned from a concussion after missing last week’s game, rushed for 152 yards on 16 carries and two TDs.

No. 14 Texas Tech 42, Oklahoma State 0

J’Koby Williams returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and the Red Raiders rolled to a win over the Cowboys in Lubbock, Texas.

Will Hammond completed 9 of 15 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) before he went down with a non-contact knee injury in the second quarter. Backup quarterback Mitch Griffis completed 9 of 13 passes for 172 yards and a passing touchdown and added a rushing score. Caleb Douglas had five catches for 98 yards and a touchdown and Williams caught three passes for 60 yards and a score.

Sam Jackson V hit on 9 of 19 passes for 48 yards for Oklahoma State (1-7, 0-5). Trent Howland rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries. Taje McCoy and Ike Esonwune each recovered a fumble for the Cowboys, who lost their seventh straight game.

No. 16 Virginia 17, North Carolina 16

J’Mari Taylor scored in overtime and the Cavaliers stopped the Tar Heels’ two-point conversion attempt, escaping with a win at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Both teams scored on their only overtime possessions. North Carolina went for the win but was denied less than a yard from the end zone on the two-point conversion play.

Chandler Morris threw for 200 yards on 20-for-35 passing for Virginia (7-1, 4-0 ACC), which has won six games in a row — including three in overtime. Gio Lopez threw for 208 yards on 23-for-36 passing for the Tar Heels (2-5, 0-3). He tossed one scoring pass and was intercepted twice.

No. 17 Tennessee 56, Kentucky 34

Joey Aguilar scorched the Wildcats’ defense for 396 passing yards, Edrees Farooq recorded a pick-6 and the Volunteers claimed their border battle in a blowout in Lexington, Ky.

Aguilar went 20 of 26 with three touchdowns for Tennessee (6-2, 3-2 SEC). The transfer quarterback had five passes that went at least 35 yards in the school’s fifth straight win in the series. Chris Brazzell II had four receptions for 138 yards and a score and Mike Matthews caught six passes for 107 yards and a TD.

Cutter Boley was 26 of 35 for 330 yards with a career-high five touchdowns and an interception for Kentucky (2-5, 0-5). DJ Miller had five catches for 120 yards and two TDs, while Kendrick Law had two for 103 yards and a score. J.J. Hester caught two TD passes.

Memphis 34, No. 18 South Florida 31

The Tigers’ game-winning touchdown with 67 seconds left capped a 17-point unanswered run in the fourth quarter to claw all the way back and knock off the visiting Bulls.

Memphis (7-1, 3-1 American) allowed just seven second-half points to high-octane South Florida (6-2, 3-1).

Tigers quarterback Brendon Lewis, whose status for the game was in question after getting injured last week, completed 27 of his 44 passes for 307 yards and two TDs. Bulls signal caller Byrum Brown was 26-of-43 passing for 269 yards with a touchdown and an interception; he added 121 yards and two TDs on the ground.

No. 19 Louisville 38, Boston College 24

The Cardinals ran for a season-high 317 yards, using their big-play capabilities to hold off the upset-minded Eagles at home.

Isaac Brown needed just 14 carries to amass a career-high 205 yards, and Keyjuan Brown added 95 on 10 rushes. Both scored on big plays and also set up Miller Moss’ two scoring runs for Louisville (6-1, 3-1 ACC). Moss threw for 187 yards on 15-of-27 passing with an interception and a touchdown. Isaac Brown, who ran for 151 yards on five carries in the first half, added a 62-yard touchdown 40 seconds later to make it an 11-point game.

Grayson James completed 23 of his 46 passes for 244 yards for the Eagles (1-7, 0-5), who have lost seven straight games. He threw three touchdown passes but was also intercepted twice.

No. 21 Cincinnati 41, Baylor 20

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s 23-yard touchdown run with 6:13 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the Bearcats’ win over the visiting Bears.

Cincinnati (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) has won seven straight as Sorsby’s touchdown run capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:21 seconds off the clock. It was a drive that followed Baylor cutting Cincinnati’s lead to 27-20, but Sorsby’s fourth scoring run of 20-plus yards this season gave the Bearcats a comfortable 34-20 lead. He finished 13-of-21 passing for 111 yards and two TD passes, while adding 85 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Baylor (4-4, 2-3) quarterback Sawyer Robertson was held well below his season averages, finishing just 18-of-26 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He added a 1-yard scoring run to cut the deficit to seven before Sorsby’s TD run.

No. 22 Texas 45, Mississippi State 38 (OT)

Backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell hit Emmett Mosley V with a 10-yard TD pass in overtime as the Longhorns roared back from 17 points down to beat the Bulldogs in a shootout in Starkville, Miss.
Texas (6-2, 3-1 SEC) scored the game’s final 24 points over the last 9:34 of regulation and overtime and posted the victory with starting quarterback Arch Manning in the medical tent. Manning passed for a career-high 346 yards and three TDs. Ryan Wingo caught five of those passes for a career-best 184 yards.

The loss was the 16th straight in conference play for Mississippi State (4-4, 0-4 SEC). Blake Shapen passed for a career-high 381 yards and four touchdowns in defeat, with two of those scores going to Brenen Thompson.

Washington 42, No. 23 Illinois 25

Demond Williams passed for four touchdowns, Denzel Boston caught a score and passed for another and the Huskies rolled to a win over the Illini in Seattle.

Washington (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) jumped ahead with a pair of time-consuming scoring drives in the first quarter, going 75 yards in 5:23 and 67 yards in 4:12, each culminating in 13-yard Williams scoring strikes to Dezmen Roebuck. Williams completed 26 of 33 passes for 280 yards and ran for 66 yards on 10 carries.

Washington’s early 14-3 lead faded in the second quarter when Illinois (5-3, 2-3) scored on a pair of Luke Altmyer TD passes. Altmyer was 22-of-34 passing for 199 yards for the Illini, and his 48 rushing yards led the team.

Houston 24, No. 24 Arizona State 16

Conner Weigman completed 14 consecutive passes at one point and rushed for a career-high 111 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a victory over the Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz.

Weigman completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 201 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions for Houston (7-1, 4-1 Big 12), which beat a ranked team on the road for the first time since 2017. Weigman’s rushing total was produced on a team-high 21 attempts.

The Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2) suffered their first loss in Tempe with Sam Leavitt as the starting quarterback, snapping an 11-game run. Leavitt’s top target, receiver Jordan Tyson, did not play because of a hamstring injury, and Leavitt himself was forced to the locker room during Arizona State’s first possession to undergo concussion protocol before returning.

No. 25 Michigan 31, Michigan State 20

Justice Haynes rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns to lead the visiting Wolverines to a solid victory over the rival Spartans at East Lansing, Mich.

Jordan Marshall added 110 rushing yards, including a 56-yard scoring scamper, as Michigan (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) won its second straight contest. The Wolverines came up with a pair of fourth-down stops in the fourth quarter and iced the game with Marshall’s TD.

Aidan Chiles completed 14 of 28 passes for 130 yards for Michigan State (3-5, 0-5), which lost its fifth consecutive game. Brandon Tullis rushed for a touchdown and Makhi Frazier had 109 yards on the ground.

NFL GAME CAPSULES

Miami Dolphins (1-6) at Atlanta Falcons (3-3)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Falcons -7.5, Total 44.5
Series Rewind: This is the first meeting since a 30-28 shootout won by the Falcons at Miami in 2021. The Dolphins lead the all-time series 9-5. Tua Tagovailoa threw four TD passes and two picks but Matt Ryan had 336 yards and moved Atlanta down the field for a late field goal to win it.

For the second time in two weeks, Tagovailoa opposes another southpaw starting quarterback in Michael Penix Jr. The lefties are trying to consistently find the passing lane but offensive gridlock is hitting Miami hard. Tagovailoa has thrown six interceptions the past two games and 10 total this season. Both teams want to lean on dual-purpose backs to move the chains. Dolphins RB De’Von Achane and Falcons RB Bijan Robinson are two of the NFL’s three backs with at least 450 rushing yards and 200 receiving (49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is the third). Finding a run-pass balance early is a priority for Miami to keep Tagovailoa out of obvious passing situations. He’s operating without Tyreek Hill the rest of the season, TE Darren Waller landed on injured reserve this week and Jaylen Waddle is fighting a hamstring injury. Atlanta’s skill-position stars are in better shape. Robinson is only 86 yards shy of 1,000 yards from scrimmage this season and the Dolphins are being trampled by effective running games to the tune of 159.3 yards per game. But Penix also could have a field day. Miami’s back seven has been inconsistent and opposing quarterbacks have a completion percentage of 74.6% this season. The Dolphins allowed six or more points in eight of the past 11 quarters.

N.Y. Jets (0-7) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bengals -6.5, Total 44.5
Series Rewind: The Bengals have won four of the past five in the series, most recently a 27-12 victory in 2022 that featured six total field goals and three Joe Burrow TD passes.

The Jets are the only winless team in the NFL, while the Bengals appear resurrected since installing Joe Flacco — who had two previous stints with the Jets — as their starter. Points and almost all positives have been a challenge to define for the winless Jets, compounded by owner Woody Johnson sharing his critique of embattled QB Justin Fields two days after head coach Aaron Glenn turned to Tyrod Taylor in the second half of a 13-6 loss to the Panthers. Cincinnati rolls into Week 8 rested, coming off a 33-31 last-second victory over the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 16. The win rekindled visions of Cincinnati competing for the division title, with games against the Jets and the Chicago Bears coming to finish a three-game homestand. The Bengals could have the services of Trey Hendrickson again on Sunday after the star pass rusher missed the Steelers game with a hip injury. The Jets are dealing with injury issues and are without CB Sauce Gardner, who entered concussion protocol after getting hurt in the second half against Carolina last week. Not helping the offensive ineptitude, WR Garrett Wilson missed last week’s game with a knee injury and was ruled out Friday. Without Gardner, the Jets likely are to use multiple corners to attempt to slow Ja’Marr Chase. He had career-high 16 catches for 161 yards last week and has 10-plus receptions in three consecutive games.

Cleveland Browns (2-5) at New England Patriots (5-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Patriots -7, Total 40.5
Series Rewind: The Patriots have won nine of the past 10 against the Browns. Cleveland’s last win was in 2010 (34-14). Browns RB Peyton Hillis scored a pair of touchdowns and QB Colt McCoy ran for a score. Tom Brady threw two TDs to Aaron Hernandez to account for both New England scores.

Expectations appeared to be trending downward again for New England following a Week 1 home loss to the Raiders. But the Patriots are rolling with four consecutive wins and a full-blown coming-out party for QB Drake Maye. Maye leads the NFL with a 75.2 completion percentage (152 of 202). Only former Saints QB Drew Brees had a completion percentage of 75-plus in his team’s first seven games of a season (77.4 %, 188 of 243, in 2018) among passers with at least 200 attempts. The defense is getting it done, too. The Patriots have allowed 20 or fewer points in all four games in the current win streak, and Cleveland averages only 16.1 points per game. But the Browns arrive having scored more than 17 points for the first time this season in a 31-6 beatdown of the Dolphins last week. Rookie QB Dillon Gabriel hasn’t thrown an interception in three starts since supplanting since-traded veteran Joe Flacco. Flacco was leading the NFL in turnovers at the time of his demotion. The emergence of a strong running game hasn’t hurt a defense-first approach. Rookie Quinshon Judkins has 467 yards and five touchdowns this season, including a three-TD performance against Miami.

New York Giants (2-5) at Philadelphia Eagles (5-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Eagles -7.5, Total 43.5
Series Rewind: The Giants look to sweep the Eagles for the first time since 2007. New York has won the first leg of the NFC East derby four times (2008, 2011, 2016, 2021) since then but settled for a split each time.

Jaxson Dart has experienced the highs and lows of NFL life in back-to-back games. After stunning the Super Bowl champion Eagles in Week 6, his Giants blew a 19-0 fourth-quarter lead in last weekend’s shocking collapse at Denver. Instead of looking back, the rookie quarterback looked ahead to “the hostility in the air” in Philadelphia for this rematch. He ran for a score and threw a touchdown in a 34-17 win in the first meeting, with fellow rookie Cam Skattebo scooting for three TD runs. The Eagles bounced back with an impressive win at Minnesota, where Jalen Hurts (326 passing yards) and receivers DeVonta Smith (183) and A.J. Brown (121) all set season highs. The Eagles have only turned the ball over three times this season, with two of them coming in the loss to the Giants — including Hurts’ only interception in his last 13 regular-season starts.

Chicago Bears (4-2) at Baltimore Ravens (1-5)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Ravens -6.5, Total 49.5
Series Rewind: While the Ravens won the most recent meeting in 2021, Chicago prevailed in each of the previous two on overtime field goals.

Chicago could corral a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2018. Baltimore already has five losses and the Ravens are mired in a four-game slide as part of the worst six-game start in the 30-season history of the franchise. The Ravens will have a lot more optimism with QB Lamar Jackson back from a hamstring strain. Baltimore has scored a total of 13 points over the past two games with understudy Cooper Rush at quarterback. He threw for a grand total of 72 yards in a 17-3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams prior to last week’s bye. Two-time NFL MVP Jackson was injured during a 37-20 Week 4 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs. Ravens LB Roquan Smith (hamstring) will return from a two-game absence to go up against the Bears, the club he spent 4 1/2 season with before being traded to the Ravens in 2022. The Chicago defense has been superb with a league-high 16 takeaways to help the team sport a league-best plus-11 turnover margin. Bears S Kevin Byard III is tied for the NFL lead with four interceptions. He has three picks in four career games at Baltimore. Offensively, quarterback Caleb Williams has passed for 1,351 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions in his second NFL season and running back D’Andre Swift (419 yards, three touchdowns) also is playing well.

Buffalo Bills (4-2) at Carolina Panthers (4-3)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bills -7.5, Total 46.5
Series Rewind: The Bills are 6-2 all-time against the Panthers. However, Carolina won 9-3 the last time these teams played in Charlotte in 2017.

The Bills lost their last two games before their bye last week while the Panthers enter the game on their first three-game winning streak since 2021, which was also the last time they were above .500. Buffalo hopes recent history continues at Carolina as the Bills have won their last eight games coming out of a bye dating back to 2017. They’re also hoping to come out of the bye week a bit healthier, potentially getting tight end Dalton Kincaid and linebacker Matt Milano back from injury. Carolina, meanwhile, appears likely to be without starting QB Bryce Young. He left last week’s win over the Jets with an ankle injury and didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. If he’s unable to go, the Panthers will turn to Andy Dalton, who started six games for Carolina over the 2023-24 seasons and has 168 career starts and 254 touchdown passes to his name.

San Francisco 49ers (5-2) at Houston Texans (2-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Texans -2.5, Total 41.5
Series Rewind: This will be just the sixth time these teams have played since Houston’s expansion season in 2002. San Francisco is 4-1 and has won the last three over Houston.

The Houston Texans have dug themselves quite a hole in the AFC South. Division winners each of the last two seasons, they trail Indianapolis by 3 1/2 games seven weeks into the season. Things won’t get any easier this week against a San Francisco win that keeps piling wins despite being down multiple key contributors on both sides of the ball. 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey is coming off his best game of the season, amassing 201 yards from scrimmage and scoring twice in last week’s 20-10 win over Atlanta. Starting QB Brock Purdy (toe) remains limited so it appears likely Mac Jones will make his sixth start of the season. Jones has filled in admirably, anchoring the NFL’s best passing offense (271.3 yards per game) despite having a limited receiver room due to injuries. The Texans could also be without a few crucial receivers with Nico Collins (concussion) and Christian Kirk (hamstring) each not practicing Wednesday and Thursday. That will test C.J. Stroud, who hasn’t yet thrown for 250 yards in a game this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2) at New Orleans Saints (1-6)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Buccaneers -4.5, Total 46.5
Series Rewind: New Orleans has handled Tampa Bay historically, holding a 40-27 lead in the all-time series. However, the Buccaneers have dominated of late, with five wins in the last six matchups.

The Buccaneers, who began the season with an impressive run of close-game wins, were humbled Monday night in a 24-9 loss at Detroit. A matchup against lowly New Orleans could be just what the doctor ordered to get on the right track. The tough news for the Bucs is that star receiver Mike Evans is out for the foreseeable future with a broken collarbone sustained in the loss to the Lions. The good news is that rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka continues to tear it up. His 527 receiving yards are nearly 100 more than any other rookie and rank seventh in the NFL entering Week 8. Mayfield also has a good track record in New Orleans, throwing 3-plus TD passes in each of his two road starts against the Saints. Saints QB Spencer Rattle is coming off a four-turnover performance (three picks, one fumble) in last week’s 26-14 loss at Chicago. However, he’s thrown four touchdowns with no interceptions in his last three home starts. New Orleans’ struggling offense will be without center Eric McCoy (biceps) and running back Kendre Miller (knee) the rest of the way due to season-ending injuries sustained last week.

Tennessee Titans (1-6) at Indianapolis Colts (6-1)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Colts -14.5, Total 46.5
Series Rewind: The Colts and Titans have split the last 10 meetings — five wins in a row for Tennessee from 2020-22 and five wins in a row for Indianapolis since the start of 2023. Four of the last five were one-score games.

The Colts lead the NFL with an average of 33.1 points per game and have scored at least 30 points five times, while the Titans are last in the league with 13.7 points per game and have scored at least 20 only twice. Hence the massive point spread. Indianapolis cruised to a 41-20 victory in the first meeting in Nashville in Week 3, led by Jonathan Taylor with 102 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He is the third player in the past 20 seasons with three games of three or more rushing TDs in a season: LaDainian Tomlinson (2006) and Derrick Henry (2021). The Titans are coming off a 31-13 loss to former coach Mike Vrabel’s Patriots, spoiling the debut of interim coach Mike McCoy. Making things tougher for Tennessee against the Indy offense, CB L’Jarius Sneed was placed on IR this week and DT Jeffery Simmons is not 100 percent.

Dallas Cowboys (3-3-1) at Denver Broncos (5-2)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Broncos -3.5, Total 50.5
Series Rewind: Denver coach Sean Payton was the assistant head coach and QBs coach in Dallas (2003-05) before taking the reins in New Orleans. It’s the first time his Broncos have faced the Cowboys.

The Broncos have won eight straight home games since Week 8 of last season, the longest active streak in the NFL. Second-year QB Bo Nix made history in last week’s instant-classic comeback to beat the Giants, becoming the first player in league history with two passing TDs and two rushing TDs in the fourth quarter. The Denver D leads the NFL in sacks (34) and ranks third in total defense (273.1 yards per game) and fourth in scoring defense (18.1 points per game). Dallas counters with a unit that ranks No. 1 in total offense (390.6) and No. 2 in scoring (31.7). Cowboys star Dak Prescott is 0-2 vs. the Broncos in his career but heads to the Mile High City on quite a roll, just the third player ever with four straight games of three or more TD passes and a 120-plus rating (Russell Wilson in 2015 and Andrew Luck in 2018). The Broncos’ pass rush and talent in the secondary presents an intriguing chess match and strength-vs-strength showdown, including All-Pros potentially locking horns with Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb covered by Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II.

Green Bay Packers (4-1-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Packers -3, Total 45.5
Series Rewind: The Steelers have won six of the past seven regular-season meetings, including a 23-19 victory during Jordan Love’s first season as a Green Bay starter in 2023. Also, Aaron Rodgers’ lone Super Bowl victory came against Pittsburgh following the 2010 regular season.

Rodgers insists he harbors no grudges against his former team of 18 seasons as he competes against the Packers for the first time in his storied career. Of course, he felt much differently when he left the organization following the 2022 season. You could picture NBC executives saying, “no, don’t say that!” when Rodgers said “this is not a revenge for me.” The bulletin board material may be gone but you can bet Rodgers would like to beat former coach Matt LaFleur on the Sunday Night stage. Rodgers has played solidly for the Steelers (4-2), completing 68.6% of his passes for 1,270 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. Love, who backed up Rodgers for three seasons, has passed for 1,438 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Love has thrown 67 touchdown passes in 38 regular-season games since taking over the full-time starting role in 2023. One player Rodgers hopes to avoid is Green Bay playmaker Micah Parsons, who recorded a career-high three sacks versus the Arizona Cardinals last week. Parsons shares the team lead of 5.5 sacks with fellow defensive lineman Rashan Gary. Packers star running back Josh Jacobs (414 rushing yards, eight TDs) is bothered by a calf injury and was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Pittsburgh star linebacker T.J. Watt is dealing with a hip injury and his four sacks are second on the team behind fellow linebacker Nick Herbig (4.5).

Washington Commanders (3-4) at Kansas City Chiefs (4-3)
Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Chiefs -11.5, Total 47.5
Series Rewind: The Chiefs have won the past eight meetings and are 10-1 all-time against Washington.

Kansas City is above .500 for the first time this season after winning four of the past five games. The Chiefs demolished the Las Vegas Raiders 31-0 last weekend when they began taking kneel downs with 2:36 left in the game. The shutout was Kansas City’s first in the regular season since 2011. Kansas City allowed just 95 yards and three first downs to the overmatched Raiders. Patrick Mahomes passed for 286 yards and three touchdowns and he has 11 TD passes against one interception over the last four contests. The Chiefs had Rashee Rice on the field for the first time this season after he completed a suspension and he caught seven passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns against the Raiders. The Commanders will be operating without star quarterback Jayden Daniels (hamstring), who was injured in last week’s 44-22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Marcus Mariota will draw the start for the third time this season. Washington split his first two starting assignments. Mariota has thrown 100 touchdown passes in his 11-year career. Commanders top wideout Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) could return after missing the previous four games. He was a full practice participant on Thursday. Washington’s defense has been a problem – the Commanders ranks 27th in total defense (364.3 yards per game) and 25th against the pass (238.3).

NBA ROUNDUP: NIKOLA JOKIC’S TRIPLE-DOUBLE LEADS NUGGETS IN HOME OPENER

Jamal Murray had 23 points, Nikola Jokic notched his second straight triple-double to start the season and the Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns 133-111 on Saturday night in Denver’s home opener.

Christian Braun scored 20 points and Aaron Gordon had 17 points two nights after posting a career-high 50 for Denver, which had seven players score in double figures and shot 51.2% (43 of 84) from the field.

Jokic finished with 14 points, 15 assists and 14 rebounds. He took just eight shots, making five, and didn’t attempt a field goal until a goaltending call on Phoenix with 2:26 left in the second quarter. His first shot attempt was a free throw with 4:18 left in the first half.

Devin Booker led the Suns with 31 points, Grayson Allen scored 17 and Dillon Brooks had 15. Phoenix shot just 43.2% (38 of 88) from the field.

Thunder 117, Hawks 100

Chet Holmgren overcame back soreness that almost kept him out to produce a double-double and help Oklahoma City remain unbeaten with a win in Atlanta.

Holmgren was listed as questionable on the pregame injury report and spent time rubbing his back during dead-ball situations. But he played through discomfort to score a season-high 31 points and grab 11 rebounds. He was 8-for-12 shooting from the floor (6-for-8 on 3-pointers).

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17 of his 30 points in the third quarter. Atlanta’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the team with 17 points. Trae Young scored 15 points and had 10 assists, his league-best 22nd straight game with at least 15 points and five assists.

Bulls 110, Magic 98

Josh Giddey scored a team-high 21 points, five reserves combined for 58 more and Chicago held off host Orlando to win back-to-back games to start the season.

Jalen Smith and Ayo Dosunmu led the Bulls bench crew with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Starters Nikola Vucevic (15 points) and Tre Jones (13), and reserves Patrick Williams (12) and Kevin Huerter (11) made it seven players — including four backups — in double figures.

Despite 7-for-21 shooting, Paolo Banchero was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points for the Magic, who lost at home for the second consecutive night. Orlando went just 3-for-24 from beyond the arc.

76ers 125, Hornets 121

Quentin Grimes had 24 points off the bench and drilled a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift host Philadelphia over Charlotte for the 76ers’ second straight win to open the season.

After trailing by 10 points with less than six minutes left, the 76ers finished the game on a 23-9 run. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 28 points and nine assists, while Joel Embiid added 20 points.

LaMelo Ball had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Charlotte, while Collin Sexton added 21 points. Rookies Ryan Kalkbrenner and Kon Knueppel scored 14 points apiece, while Sion James had 10 points off the bench for the Hornets.

Grizzlies 128, Pacers 103

Rookie Cedric Coward erupted for 27 points behind a torrid 3-point shooting effort as Memphis rolled past visiting Indiana.

In just his third NBA game, Coward knocked down all six of his 3-point attempts off the bench. Ja Morant added 19 points and eight assists, anchoring a clean offensive game which saw the Grizzlies commit just four turnovers.

The Pacers got little consistent offense outside of Bennedict Mathurin, who finished with 26 points before exiting with a sore right foot. Aaron Nesmith added 15 while Pascal Siakam and Obi Toppin each scored 13.

NHL ROUNDUP: MILESTONE NIGHT FOR LIGHTNING TRIO IN WIN

Anthony Cirelli scored a go-ahead power-play goal with 3:15 left, Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman recorded milestone points and the Tampa Bay Lightning were victorious for the first time on home ice, 4-3, over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.

In the second period in a 1-1 match, Kucherov, who had two assists, reached 1,000 career points with the secondary helper on Jake Guentzel’s second marker, with the entire team jumping onto the ice to celebrate with the star right wing. Kucherov joined former Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos as the only players to reach 1,000 points with the franchise.

Hedman (two assists) added his 800th career point on Cirelli’s first tally in close on goaltender Lukas Dostal (29 saves) for a 3-1 lead. Cirelli added an empty-net goal to cap a three-point night. Brandon Hagel notched two assists to give him 300 career points for the Lightning. Backup Jonas Johansson got the start and made 37 saves.

Jacob Trouba, Ryan Poehling and Troy Terry (assist) scored for Anaheim, which lost in regulation for the first time on its five-game road swing (2-1-1) that ends Tuesday night at the Florida Panthers.

Panthers 3, Golden Knights 0

Sergei Bobrovsky made 17 saves for his 50th career shutout as Florida handed visiting Vegas its first regulation loss in Sunrise, Fla.

A.J. Greer had a goal and an assist and Sam Reinhart and Cole Schwindt each scored goals for Florida, which won for just the second time in seven games. It was the first shutout of the season for Bobrovsky, who also picked up his 434th career win. Akira Schmid finished with 23 saves for Vegas, which had a 14-game regular-season point streak dating back to last season snapped.

Schwindt was making his season debut with the Panthers after being claimed on waivers from Vegas on Oct. 2. His goal early in the third period when he pulled the puck out of a scrum in front of the crease and scored a wrist shot was the second of his career.

Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3 (OT)

GAME REWIND: PACERS 103, GRIZZLIES 128

Injuries continue to be the dominant storyline surrounding the Indiana Pacers to start the 2025-26 season.

Already without star point guard Tyrese Haliburton (Achilles) for the season and with T.J. McConnell (hamstring), Quenton Jackson (hamstring), and Kam Jones (back) to start the season, the Pacers lost starting point guard Andrew Nembhard to a shoulder strain in the first half of Thursday’s season opener against Oklahoma City. Second-year guard Johnny Furphy then injured his foot in the second overtime.

Both Nembhard and Furphy were unavailable for Saturday’s road opener in Memphis and the Pacers then lost rookie guard Taelon Peter to a groin injury in the first quarter and leading scorer Bennedict Mathurin to a foot injury in the third quarter.

The undermanned Pacers kept competing, but Indiana (0-2) ultimately fell to the Grizzlies (2-1), 128-103.

Mathurin scored a team-high 26 points in as many minutes before exiting with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter, going 8-for-12 from the field (2-for-2 from 3-point range) and 8-for-9 from the free throw line.

Aaron Nesmith added 15 points on 4-of-6 3-point shooting. Pascal Siakam tallied 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Obi Toppin finished with 13 points and nine boards off the bench.

Ben Sheppard scored on Indiana’s first possession of the night, but the Pacers went cold afterwards, missing their next nine shots as they fell behind 10-3 early in the contest.

The Pacers eventually got the offense going, with Mathurin scoring six points in the opening quarter and Toppin and RayJ Dennis each contributing five points off the bench. But the Grizzlies led 23-21 after the first quarter.

The hosts controlled the opening half of the second quarter, outscoring Indiana 22-4 over a 4:49 stretch to open up a 48-29 lead.

The Blue & Gold responded with a 13-3 run, with Nesmith scoring seven points over that stretch. They managed to keep the deficit within single digits heading into the intermission.

Mathurin sparked a Pacers run coming out of the break. The fourth-year guard scored Indiana’s first 10 points of the half, including a pair of 3-pointers, then set up Sheppard for a corner three that cut Memphis’ lead to 68-65.

But the Grizzlies quickly responded, hitting five 3-pointers — three by rookie forward Cedric Coward — during an 21-3 spurt over the next 5:01.

Things got worse for Indiana when Mathurin checked out of the game and headed back to the locker room with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. Mathurin was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the night with a sore right foot.

Memphis led 103-84 after three quarters.

The Pacers opened the final frame with a 10-2 run to get back within 11. But Coward then knocked down two more threes during a 9-0 Grizzlies spurt to put the game away.

Indiana was so decimated in the backcourt at the end of the night that when head coach Rick Carlisle opted to pull his starters at the end of the game, he fielded a lineup with three centers on the floor.

Coward scored a game-high 27 points in his third career game, going 9-for-13 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point range while also tallying six rebounds and four assists.

Ja Morant added 19 points and eight assists for Memphis, while Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 17 as the Grizzlies bounced back from a 146-114 loss to Miami on Friday night.

The Pacers will continue their road trip on Sunday night in Minnesota, when they take on the Timberwolves on the second night of a back-to-back. The trip wraps up on Wednesday in Dallas before Indiana returns to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a four-game homestand that begins on Friday with an NBA Cup game against Atlanta.

Inside the Numbers

Mathurin followed up his 36 points in the season opener with 26 in under three quarters on Saturday before exiting with an injury.

After going 0-for-8 from 3-point range against Oklahoma City, Toppin made 2-of-6 3-pointers on Saturday.

The Pacers went 14-for-40 (35 percent) from 3-point range, while the Grizzlies were 15-for-39 (38.5 percent).

The Grizzlies outscored Indiana 56-36 in points in the paint.

Despite injuries to their top three point guards, the Pacers only committed 13 turnovers on Saturday. But the Grizzlies were even better with the ball, coughing it up just four times all night.

You Can Quote Me On That

“The second quarter we became undisciplined, we made mistakes. I don’t know what the shooting was in that quarter, but it couldn’t have been good. That became a problem, but we made a run at the end of the quarter to get it down to eight. And then we got it to three. And then we just had too many breakdowns.” -Carlisle on how the game was lost

“We’ve just got to focus on what we have and not what we don’t have. We’ve all got to be solution-based thinkers, everybody from me to all of our two-way players. It’s a tough situation, but there’s opportunity here and we’ve got to find it.” -Carlisle on overcoming injuries

“It’s the NBA. It’s hard. These guys [the Grizzlies] got walloped last night. That’s hard. They turned it around tonight. We needed to be a lot better and we weren’t. We’ve got to move forward, make the minor adjustments that will help us do some better things, and we’ve got to do better tomorrow.” -Carlisle on battling through adversity

Stat of the Night

Mathurin is just the fifth player in franchise history to score 60 or more points over the first two games of a season. Domantas Sabonis did it in 2021, Jalen Rose in 2001, Reggie Miller in both 1989 and 1997, and Adrian Dantley in 1977.

Noteworthy

The Pacers have lost their last five road games at Memphis. Their last win at FedEx Forum came on April 11, 2021.

After not playing in the season opener, James Wiseman started at center on Saturday. Wiseman finished with four points on 2-of-3 shooting and four rebounds in 20 minutes. It was Wiseman’s first NBA game since tearing his Achilles in the season opener last season at Detroit.

Two-way guard RayJ Dennis made his season debut on Saturday, tallying seven points and six assists in 28 minutes off the bench but going just 1-for-9 from the field.

Up Next

The Pacers travel to Minnesota to take on Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves on the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 PM ET.

HOOSIERS HANDLE BRUINS

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Smiles? Don’t do it. Don’t think about it. Not during a game, certainly not anywhere near Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti. That’s what the post-game locker room is for; that’s reserved for the aftermath when victory is achieved and full throttle effort on every play attained.

Take, for instance, second-ranked Indiana’s 56-6 victory over previously surging UCLA on Saturday. The Hoosiers (8-0 overall, 5-0 in the Big Ten) didn’t mess around, asserting ruthless dominance starting from linebacker Aiden Fisher’s pick-6 two plays into the game to backup quarterback Alberto Mendoza’s fourth-quarter touchdown run.

“We want to capitalize on every possession in every game,” starting quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. “Every game is a big game.”

Here was linebacker Isaiah Jones in the weight room at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium, contemplating why the Hoosiers have two 50-point Big Ten victories — they earlier beat then-No. 9 Illinois 63-10 — when no one else has one.

“We’re bummed they got the six points,” Jones said. “We were going for the goose egg. You can’t always be perfect. It’s something we have to learn from and fix in the film room.

“Coach Cig doesn’t want to see smiles on the sidelines at all. It’s 0-0 every time we step on the field. It’s always about getting better. We have an ultimate goal at the end of the season. That means no smiles till we get to the locker room.”

IU entered the game with a conference-leading 32.3-point average margin of victory and then extended it as it continues to break the will of opponents.

“To see a team wave the white flag,” Cignetti said, “it takes a while. Maybe that’s what happened here.”

Why does it keep happening?

“We have everybody on the same page,” Cignetti said. “I know what I want. Our assistants have been together a long time. We have good players with good character and leadership. We play every play like the game is on the line.”

UCLA’s three-game winning streak had no chance to reach four. IU reduced an offense that had averaged 33.3 points in its previous three games to rubble, intercepting two passes, forcing and recovering a fumble, and holding the Bruins (3-5, 3-2) to 201 total yards and a pair of field goals. They were just 1-for-11 on third downs.

Offensively, the Hoosiers broke open the game by scoring touchdowns on seven of eight possessions in one stretch, and only punted once in the game, one more than in its win over Michigan State the previous week. No scoring drive took longer than 5:45.

Whatever will the Bruins had entering the game was long gone by the end.

“That’s our mentality,” running back Roman Hemby said. “We want to impose our will on the defense. We did that. We just lean on them. When you have a great offensive line like we have, one that’s moving people off the ball, when the third and fourth quarters hit, we’re able to have our way.”

Added Jones: “Aiden started it off with the pick-6. Eventually, they started to give up. It’s will vs. will, and I think ours was stronger.”

Fernando Mendoza overcame a slow start to finish 15-for-22 for 168 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He also ran for 45 yards and a 20-yard touchdown.

Alberto Mendoza replaced him late in the third quarter and went 4-for-7 for 45 yards and an interception. He also ran for 39 yards and a four-yard touchdown.

Receiver E.J. Williams Jr. capitalized on UCLA double teaming Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. with five catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

“They were doubling Elijah and Coop, and that allowed the one-on-one for E.J.,” Fernando Mendoza said. “That’s great. The smile goes on my face when that happens.”

IU ran for 262 yards and four touchdowns. Hemby led with 81 yards and two touchdowns. Kaelon Black added 70 yards.

“UCLA was dialing up the pressure on us,” Mendoza said. “They showed us a lot of looks that we hadn’t seen. They did a great job of preparing for our pass game, which opened up our run game.”

Fisher hurt his knee in the first half and never returned. Cignetti said he was taken out for precautionary reasons and they would evaluate it moving forward.

Jones took over making the defensive calls. He finished with a team-leading eight tackles, one forced fumble, one pass breakup, and one quarterback hurry.

“You hope it never happens,” Jones said. “I want him to play the whole game. You have to step up when your called upon.

“Aiden is such a big part of the defense. We rep it quite a bit, but we have so many exotic packages that we’re always bouncing around the field playing different positions. Sliding over one position was no big deal. Be ready and be in your notebook and playbook.”

The Hoosiers were more than ready.

“We want to keep going, keep chipping away, chipping away,” defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker said. “After the game, we can think we did a good job. During the game, it’s keep going.”

******

IU kickoff specialist Brendan Franke was hurt on the opening kickoff. Quinn Warren took over the rest of the way.

The Hoosiers’ defense opened on the attack, sacking quarterback Nico Iamaleava on the game’s first play, intercepting him with Fisher’s pick-6 on the second.

A few minutes later, Mendoza’s third interception of the season gave UCLA the ball at midfield. The defense held, stuffing a fake punt attempt.

A Mendoza 30-yard completion to Williams Jr. set up Hemby’s 1-yard TD run. Mendoza hit Sarratt for a 1-yard scoring pass and a 21-0 early second quarter lead.

Jones forced a fumble and defensive lineman Hosea Wheeler recovered it. Hemby followed with a 13-yard TD run for a 28-0 lead.

IU countered a UCLA field goal with a Mendoza touchdown pass to Williams Jr. for a 35-3 halftime score.

The Hoosiers got Mendoza’s 20-yard TD run followed by his 62-yard scoring pass to Williams Jr. for a 49-3 third-quarter lead. UCLA added a field goal.

Alberto Mendoza replaced his brother and ran four yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to complete the 56-6 final score.

IU plays at Maryland next Saturday.

“We’ve got to keep it going,” Cignetti said.

BOILERS DROP CLOSE HOMECOMING GAME TO RUTGERS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Football dropped a 27-24 heartbreaker to Rutgers on Saturday in Ross-Ade Stadium.

Purdue (2-6, 0-5 B1G) led 17-7 after Devin Mockobee recorded his first receiving touchdown of the season and third of his career. Quarterback Malachi Singleton found him wide open in the end zone for a three-yard score in the third quarter.

But the Scarlet Knights (4-4, 1-4 B1G) stormed back to score two unanswered touchdowns, taking a 21-17 lead with 7:45 left in the fourth. Michael Jackson III then shifted the momentum back to Purdue’s side with a career-long 56-yard kick return.

Quarterback Ryan Browne and the offense capitalized with a seven-play, 41-yard drive and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Nitro Tuggle, giving Purdue a 24-21 edge.

Rutgers took the ball back and went 73 yards on 11 plays to kick a game-tying field goal with just over a minute to go. The Boilermakers had a chance to go down and win the game, but a pass from Browne deflected off a defender and back into the quarterback’s hands. He tried to make a move on the busted play, but the Knights forced and recovered a fumble in Purdue territory.

Rutgers’ Jai Patel then kicked a walk-off 30-yard field goal to spoil Purdue’s Homecoming game.

The Boilers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead thanks to a 56-yard run by Malachi Thomas on the opening drive that set up a touchdown. Mockobee, Browne, Singleton and Antonio Harris also contributed to Purdue’s 217 rushing yards, averaging a season-best 7.8 per carry.

Browne and Singleton combined to go 13-of-23 with three passing touchdowns. Thomas led the receivers with three catches for 50 yards, including one for his first touchdown as a Boilermaker.

Tahj Ra-El paced the defense with a career-high 15 tackles, followed by Charles Correa (13), Hershey McLaurin (12) and Mani Powell (11). The defense totaled a season-high five sacks with one apiece for McLaurin, CJ Nunnally IV, Trey Smith and Jamarrion Harkless, as well as a shared sack by Correa and Powell. McLaurin and Nunnally also each forced a fumble.

Spencer Porath converted his only field goal attempt from 20 yards, improving to 10-of-11 (90.9%) this season.

UP NEXT

The Boilers will travel to Ann Arbor to battle No. 25 Michigan next Saturday (Nov. 1). Kickoff under the lights of Michigan Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.

FOOTBALL SUFFERS 21-7 SETBACK AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS

DEKALB, Ill. – – The Ball State football team fought until the end Saturday afternoon, including creating a late fourth-quarter fumble, but ultimately could not overcome a strong rushing effort from Northern Illinois in a 21-7 setback at Huskies Stadium.

Redshirt senior quarterback Kiael Kelly led the Cardinals (4-4; 2-2 Mid-American Conference) with 86 yards on the ground and 136 through the air. The biggest play being a one-yard touchdown pass to redshirt senior Drew Cassens to tie the score at 7-7 two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter.

It was Cassens’ first touchdown in his debut season at Ball State and second of his collegiate career, with the other coming during his 2022 campaign as a redshirt sophomore for the Huskies (2-6; 1-3 MAC).

While the Ball State offense was able to limit Northern Illinois to 65 yards through the air, the Huskies were able to tally 305 rushing yards, with a pair of 100-yard rushers. The biggest play being a 53-yard touchdown run by Telly Johnson Jr. to open the scoring in NIU’s first possession.

The Cardinals would hold NIU to just seven points in the opening 30 minutes, with the game tied at the half. Unfortunately, the Huskies scored on a seven-yard rush in the third quarter and a 14-yard pass in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Ball State tried to mount a late comeback, driving to the Northern Illinois 13-yard line with 3:57 remaining before an interception gave the ball back to the Huskies. Sophomore defensive back Eric McClain would give the Cardinals one more shot, chasing down NIU’s leading rusher Chavon Wright on a 17-yard run and forcing a fumble with 1:56 remaining which was recovered by redshirt freshman outside linebacker Layton Starks.

The Cardinals would take the ball down to the NIU one-yard line but was stopped twice on rushing attempts to end the game at 21-7.

Along with the late fourth-quarter fumble, the Cardinals were able to force a season-high three turnovers in the game. Redshirt senior defensive back Joedrick Lewis gave BSU its first by picking up his second interception in as many games in the first quarter.

Redshirt junior linebacker Caden Johnson provided the second by forcing a fumble in the second quarter which was also recovered by Starks. Overall, the Ball State defense has recorded seven takeaways over the last three games, after logging just one over the first five games.

Johnson would also tie for team-high honors with eight total tackles, along with redshirt senior linebacker Alfred Chea and senior linebacker Jack Beebe.

Senior defensive end Nathan Voorhis was also credited with his MAC-leading 10th stack of the season to end an NIU drive in the third quarter, one of his two tackles for loss in the game. With the sack, Voorhis becomes just the seventh player in program history to register double-digit sacks in a single season.

Voorhis needs 1.5 more sacks to reach the NCAA recognized single season record of 11.5 established by Anthony Winbush in 2017. He is three shy of the overall single season record of 13 set by Craig Newbury in 1981 and tied by Kelly George in 1982.

The Ball State football team returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 5 when it hosts Kent State at Scheumann Stadium. Game time for the nationally televised contest will be either 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 8/10 North Dakota pulled away from Indiana State in the second half following a 20-point third quarter as the Sycamores fell on the road in Missouri Valley Football play on Saturday afternoon inside the Alerus Center, 46-17.

BJ Wuest added a tipped punt and returned the ball 16 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to highlight the Indiana State scoring efforts.

North Dakota (6-2) utilized a balanced offensive attack in the game recording 300 passing yards from Jerry Kaminski and 104 rushing yards from Sawyer Seidl to control the MVFC matchup. ++++++++++VALPO FOOTBALL+++++++++

SHORTHANDED BEACONS DROP HOMECOMING HEARTBREAKER

The Valparaiso University football team battled through a series of injuries to key players and finished the game with a true freshman quarterback who is fourth on the depth chart under center in Saturday’s Homecoming matchup with Morehead State, a game that saw the visiting Eagles prevail 17-13 at Brown Field.

How It Happened

The Beacons struck first for the second straight week, this time on a 3-yard touchdown plunge by Dawaiian McNeely (Ceres, Calif. / Central Catholic [Wyoming]). Quarterback Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) completed three passes of 15 yards or more on the drive, one each to Michael Mansaray (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South [South Dakota]), Chris Gundy (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) and Ryan Ricketti (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River).

The Valpo defense forced a quick three-and-out, but the Eagles came away with an interception. The two teams exchanged punts, then Morehead found the endzone on a 22-yard catch by Craig Cunningham on a pass by Carter Cravens that leveled the score at seven with 2:58 left in the first quarter.

The teams exchanged punts again, but then the Beacons put together a scoring drive on their first possession of the second quarter, culminating with Keefe keeping it from a yard out to push it across the goal line to make it 13-7 (PAT missed). Gundy had a 43-yard catch from Keefe to set up the score, which came with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter.

The Beacons came up with a takeaway with 6:28 left in the first half, when redshirt freshman Wyatt Little (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) made an interception at the Valpo 43. Keefe completed passes to Ricketti, Gundy and Brayden Welch (Oregon City, Oregon / Oregon City) on that drive, highlighted by an 18 yarder to Welch. The drive ended on a missed 23-yard field goal attempt with 46 seconds left in the first half.

That proved to be a big swing, as instead the Eagles got points before halftime when Thomas Schwartz V nailed a 41-yard field goal as the final seconds ticked off the first-half clock.

Morehead State received the second-half kickoff and started with a quick strike as Cunningham had a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 17-13 with 13:18 left in the third.

A 41-yard kickoff return by Gundy jumpstarted the first Valpo drive of the second half, but the Beacons eventually turned the ball over on downs on a fourth-and-2 from the Morehead 34.

Morehead State traveled backward eight yards on a seven-play, penalty-plagued drive that took 4:20, the team’s longest in terms of time of the game. Neither team scored for the remainder of the third.

The Beacons fought off the Eagles on a fourth-and-2 at the Valpo 29 with 9:15 left in the fourth thanks to De’Andre Wilborn (Chicago, Ill. / Westinghouse [Georgetown]) and Matt Molnar (Avon Lake, Ohio / Saint Edward) making a stop for no gain to force the turnover on downs.

A 31-yard run by Noah Long (Liberty Hill, Texas / Liberty Hill) started a drive that later reached the redzone, but Valpo could not convert on first-and-goal from the 10, eventually turning it over on downs with 3:28 remaining.

The Valpo defense made a key stop with Anthony Feltrinelli (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) recording the tackle a yard shy of the sticks on third-and-5, and the Eagles punted. Valpo faced a fourth down from its own 25, but freshman QB Nathan Downey (South Elgin, Ill. / Wheaton Academy) completed a 17-yard pass to Micah Mackay (Zionsville, Ind. / Lutheran) to keep hope alive. Valpo eventually turned the ball over on downs with all zeros on the clock.

Inside the Game

Little’s interception was the first of his collegiate career.

McNeely’s rushing score was his fourth this season and the sixth of his career, while Keefe scored with his legs for the second time in his career, both this season.

Redshirt sophomore Nic Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) led the team with eight tackles, while Feltrinelli and Wilborn contributed seven apiece. This was the fourth game in which Lendino has notched eight or more stops this season.

The defense recorded seven tackles for loss, tied with last week at St. Thomas for the most in league play this season.

Long had a team-high 59 rushing yards on nine carries with a long of 31.

Gundy accrued a career-high 108 receiving yards on five catches. He became Valpo’s first 100-yard receiver since Solomon Davis on Sept. 23, 2023 vs. Marist (175).

The Beacons had 339 yards of total offense, the team’s highest total since the Aug. 30 season opener vs. Virginia Lynchburg. They outgained Morehead State by eight yards in Saturday’s game.

Keefe completed nine of his 15 passes for 154 yards.

The Beacons continued to avoid penalties like the plague, as they committed just one infraction for 10 yards. In five different games this season, Valpo has been flagged three times or fewer.

This marked Valpo’s second loss by four points or fewer in 2025. This was the sixth one-score game in the last eight matchups between Valpo and Morehead State.
