Stockton also ran for 59 yards and a score, while Lawson Luckie hauled in three touchdowns receptions for Georgia (6-1, 4-1), which outgained Ole Miss 510-351.

Ole Miss (6-1, 3-1) was paced by Trinidad Chambliss. He threw for 263 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

After Chambliss’s 75-yard pass to De’Zhaun Stribling on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter gave Ole Miss an eight-point lead, the Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 23-7 the rest of the way, including the game’s final 17 points.

Arizona State 26, No. 7 Texas Tech 22

Sam Leavitt passed for a career-high 319 yards and a touchdown, running back Raleek Brown scored on a 1-yard run with 34 seconds left and the Sun Devils blew a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter before recovering for a 26-22 upset over the visiting Red Raiders in Tempe.

Wideout Jordyn Tyson was also a big contributor for Arizona State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12), hauling in 10 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Brown’s game-winning score was set up by a pass interference penalty that gave the Sun Devils the ball at the Texas Tech 2 with 40 seconds left. The victory marked Arizona State’s first over an AP top-10 team since the program beat No. 6 Oregon in 2019.

Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond made his second career start filling in for an injured Behren Morton, completing 22 for 37 passes for 167 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1) came into Saturday’s game having never trailed this season and having outscored their opponents by an average of 35.3 points before their first loss this campaign.

No. 14 Oklahoma 26, South Carolina 7

The Sooners collected six sacks and forced a pair of turnovers en route to a dominating win over the host Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C.

No. 15 BYU 24, No. 23 Utah 21

After fourth-quarter touchdown runs by receiver Parker Kingston and quarterback Bear Bachmeier in the fourth quarter, the Cougars held off the Utes for a Big 12 and rivalry win at Provo, Utah.

The Utes (5-2, 2-2) scored with 1:24 left on a 2-yard pass from Devon Dampier to Larry Simmons. The ensuing onside kick did not go 10 yards before the Utes touched the ball. Dampier, who was 20-of-36 for 244 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, accounted for all the plays that led to his touchdown pass to Simmons.

No. 18 Virginia 22, Washington State 20

The Cavaliers erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and took its only lead on a safety with 2:41 left to run their winning streak to five and become bowl eligible with a win over the Cougars in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (6-1) is bowl eligible for the first time since 2021 after reaching six wins for the first time under fourth-year head coach Tony Elliott.

It was the first meeting with Washington State (3-4), which took a 20-10 lead into the fourth quarter before the Cavaliers launched the rally with a 97-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Harrison Waylee with 9:45 to play. An interception set up Will Bettridge’s game-tying 34-yard field goal f with 2:55 remaining and Kam Robinson and Hunter Osborne tackled Washington State running back Kirby Vorhees in the end zone for the decisive safety.

No. 19 South Florida 48, Florida Atlantic 13

Byrum Brown had another strong all-around performance and the quick-tempo Bulls subdued the visiting, high-flying Owls in an American Conference matchup in Tampa, Fla.

Brown, who came into the day with 14 total touchdowns in his last three games, continued his dominant play completing 14 of his 24 passes for 256 yards and three TDs. He added 111 yards rushing and another TD on the ground. Jeremiah Koger also showed out as he electrified the crowd with a 60-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap off a four-catch, 90-yard showing.

South Florida (6-1, 3-0), known for its high-tempo offense, had just one of its scoring drives go longer than 3:15. The Bulls outgained FAU 522-312. FAU’s Caden Veltkamp was 35-of-50 passing with 244 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Asaad Waseem hauled in eight catches for 56 yards for the Owls (3-4, 2-2).

No. 21 Texas 16, Kentucky 13 (OT)

Mason Shipley booted a game-winning 45-yard field goal in overtime after the Longhorn defense made a goal-line stand and they escaped with a victory over upset-minded the Wildcats in an SEC matchup in Lexington, Ky.

The Wildcats (2-4, 0-4) got the ball first in the extra period and drove to the Texas 1 before eschewing a sure field goal and deciding to try to punch the ball into the end zone with runs up the middle on both third and fourth down.

Arch Manning passed for 132 yards to lead a scuffling Texas offense. The Wildcats did about everything correct except win. They outgained the Longhorns 395-179, had a whopping 26-8 edge in first downs and nearly doubled Texas (5-2, 2-1) in time of possession.

UAB 31, No. 22 Memphis 24

Alex Mortensen’s Blazers earned an upset in his debut as interim coach thanks to quarterback Ryder Burton’s impressive first collegiate start and a last-second defensive stand to beat the ranked Tigers in Birmingham, Ala.

Burton, tabbed as the starter after UAB announced quarterback Jalen Kitna would miss Saturday’s game due to an upper-body injury, completed 20 of 27 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. The Blazers (3-4, 1-3 American) also got career games from Iverson Hooks (11 catches, 172 yards, 3 TDs) and Solomon Beebe (five carries, 106 yards and a TD) to snap a three-game losing streak that led to the school dismissing coach Trent Dilfer last weekend.

Memphis (6-1, 2-1) trailed 31-17 with 4:06 to go but got a 37-yard Christian Ross touchdown reception from backup quarterback AJ Hill with 2:19 left. The Tigers then got to the Blazers’ 1-yard line with a minute left. However, they committed three penalties to push them back 10 yards and turned it over on downs with 15 seconds left. Hill had entered in the third quarter when starter Brendon Lewis sustained an injury.

No. 24 Cincinnati 49, Oklahoma State 17

The remained unbeaten in Big 12 play and clinched bowl eligibility for the first time since 2022 by throttling the host Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla.

This also the first time Cincinnati (6-1, 4-0) is eligible for a bowl game as members of the Big 12 and the first time in under head coach Scott Satterfield. Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby played mistake-free football, completing 20 of 29 passes for 270 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He added a rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma State (1-6, 0-4) was undone by costly penalties and an inability to convert on fourth down. After pulling within 28-17 in the third quarter, the Cowboys were outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter. Despite rushing for 228 yards on 48 carries and possessing the ball for nearly 37 minutes, two turnovers in the fourth quarter shut the door on a potential upset.

NHL ROUNDUP: MARK SCHEIFELE BECOMES JETS’ ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER

Mark Scheifele celebrated a record-setting night with a power-play goal, and Connor Hellebuyck continued his domination of Nashville on Saturday as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the visiting Predators 4-1.

Scheifele’s goal allowed him to pass Blake Wheeler as the franchise’s all-time leader with 813 points. Vladislav Namestnikov and Nino Niederreiter both scored and assisted on a goal, while Logan Stanley found the back of the net as well. Jonathan Toews added two assists for his first multipoint game with his hometown team.

A Michael Bunting goal with 1:04 left denied Hellebuyck’s attempt for his first shutout of the season. Still, the two-time defending Vezina Trophy winner’s performance helped the Jets win their fourth straight as he stopped 30 shots as he posted his 18th win over Nashville in 30 games.

Juuse Saros made 20 saves for Nashville, which ended a four-game road trip losing the last three (0-2-1). The Predators finished 0-for-4 on power-play chances and are just 2-for-23 (8.7%) six games into the season. Winnipeg has scored five times in 15 chances with the man advantage (33.3%) in five games.

Kraken 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

Defenseman Josh Mahura scored at 3:06 of overtime and visiting Seattle Kraken defeated Toronto.

Mahura scored on an 11-foot wrist shot in the Kraken’s fourth straight overtime game (one went to a shootout). They have won three of five to open the season and have a point in every game. It was the second consecutive overtime game for the Maple Leafs, who had won two straight.

Shane Wright had a goal and an assist for the Kraken. Jani Nyman and Vince Dunn scored a goal apiece and Mason Marchment and Chandler Stephenson each added two assists. Joey Daccord stopped 26 shots. For Toronto, John Tavares scored twice, Morgan Rielly tallied once, William Nylander contributed two assists and Anthony Stolarz made 24 saves.

Hurricanes 4, Kings 3 (OT)

Seth Jarvis scored 1:45 into overtime to give Carolina a win over host Los Angeles.

Captain Jordan Staal had two goals, including his 300th, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored for Carolina, who blew a 3-0 lead. Defenseman K’Andre Miller had two assists and Brandon Bussi made 25 saves. Carolina is the NHL’s only undefeated team at 5-0-0.

Trevor Moore, Andrei Kuzmenko and Kevin Fiala got the goals for the Kings, who lost their fourth straight (0-2-2). Adrian Kempe had two assists and Anton Forsberg stopped 36 shots.

Flyers 2, Wild 1 (OT)

Noah Cates scored his first career overtime goal to propel Philadelphia to a victory over visiting Minnesota.

Owen Tippett also scored for the Flyers, while Vladimir Tarasenko scored his first goal since joining the Wild. Philadelphia’s Dan Vladar (15 saves) and Minnesota netminder Jesper Wallstedt (19 saves) held firm in the low-scoring contest.

Vladar made a glove save midway through overtime and kept the play alive, sending Jamie Drysdale up the ice. Tyson Foerster dropped a pass to Cates and took out a Wild defenseman, allowing Cates to get a clean look at the decisive wrister from the slot.

Rangers 4, Canadiens 3

Artemi Panarin scored his first goal this season 5:51 into the third period and collected three assists as New York rallied from an early two-goal deficit and hung on for a victory over host Montreal.

The Rangers, who have scored all 15 of their goals on the road, improved to 7-0-2 in their past nine trips to Montreal and snapped a three-game skid. Matthew Robertson scored his first career goal, Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play and J.T. Miller also scored for New York, which got 21 saves from Jonathan Quick.

Juraj Slafkovsky and Nick Suzuki scored in the opening 3:42, but the Canadiens’ four-game winning streak ended as they took their first regular-season home regulation loss since Feb. 9 after going 12-0-2 on home ice. Sam Montembeault allowed four goals on 22 shots.

Sabres 3, Panthers 0

Josh Doan netted his first goals with Buffalo by producing two power-play markers, goaltender Alex Lyon denied all 32 Florida shots and Buffalo blanked visiting Florida.

Traded by the rebranded Utah Mammoth to Buffalo in late June, the 23-year-old Doan tallied in the first and second periods. Owen Power also scored for Buffalo, who beat the Ottawa Senators 8-4 on Wednesday and were 2-for-4 on the power play Saturday while killing off all seven opposing man advantages.

Blanked for the first time this season, Florida’s offense continued its anemic production as the two-time Cup defending champions lost for the fourth straight time in regulation. The Panthers have only four goals in the four setbacks, and their losing streak is the longest active skid in the Eastern Conference.

Islanders 5, Senators 4

Anders Lee scored with 1:03 left to cap a comeback win by visiting New York over Ottawa.

Emil Heineman and Bo Horvat began the Islanders’ comeback from a 2-0 deficit by scoring in the second period before Max Shabanov and Kyle Palmieri also collected game-tying goals. Goalie Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves, including a stop of Shane Pinto on a third-period penalty shot.

Pinto, David Perron, Tim Stutzle and Dylan Cozens scored for the Senators, who have lost four of their first six games. Ullmark recorded 18 saves.

Devils 5, Oilers 3

Jack Hughes had two goals and one assist to pace New Jersey over visiting Edmonton.

Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist, Connor Brown scored short-handed and Jake Allen made 27 saves for the Devils, who have won four in a row. New Jersey defeated both 2025 Stanley Cup finalists in a three-day span.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals, Curtis Lazar also scored, Connor McDavid had two assists and Calvin Pickard made 18 saves for the Oilers, who have lost two in a row following three straight wins to open the season.

Columbus 3, Tampa Bay 2

Kirill Marchenko scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period to help Columbus beat Tampa Bay for its first home win of the season.

Marchenko gave Columbus the lead 1:15 into the third period with a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Tampa Bay goaltender Jonas Johansson under his left arm. Kent Johnson and Damon Severson also scored for the Blue Jackets. Jet Greaves made 22 saves.

Ryan McDonagh and Anthony Cirelli scored for the Lightning, who had their three-game point streak (1-0-2) snapped, to stake them to a 2-1 lead after the opening period. Johansson made 28 saves.

Golden Knights 6, Flames 1

Mark Stone had two goals and two assists, Mitch Marner scored two goals and Jack Eichel dished off four assists as Vegas cruised to a victory over visiting Calgary.

It was the 28th multi-goal game of Marner’s career. Ivan Barbashev and Tomas Hertl each added a goal and an assist for Vegas, which won its third straight game while extending its season-opening point streak to six games. Adin Hill made 26 saves to pick up his first win in three starts this season.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored a goal in his season debut for Calgary, which lost its fifth straight game. Dustin Wolf finished with 14 saves before being pulled at the start of the third period for Devin Cooley, who made eight saves for the Flames.

Blues 3, Stars 1

Jordan Kyrou, Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter scored as St. Louis defeated visiting Dallas.

After getting outscored 13-3 while losing their first two home games, the Blues tightened up their defensive play and allowed the Stars to put just 19 shots on goal. Jordan Binnington made 18 saves to earn the victory.

Mikko Rantanen scored, and goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Stars.

Avalanche 4, Bruins 1

Nathan MacKinnon had two goals, Josh Manson also scored and Colorado beat Boston.

Martin Necas added an empty-net goal, Artturi Lehkonen contributed three assists and Scott Wedgewood needed just 13 saves to secure the win for Colorado, which scored on its first two shots. The Avalanche have started the season on a six-game points streak.

John Beecher scored and Jeremy Swayman turned away 34 shots for Boston. The Bruins have dropped their last three games after beginning the season 3-0.

Penguins 3, Sharks 0

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each scored a goal and added an assist, leading Pittsburgh to a win over host San Jose.

Anthony Mantha also scored for the Penguins, who have won back-to-back games and improved to 4-2-0 to start the season. Tristan Jarry made 31 saves for his first shutout of the season and improved to 2-1-0.

Alex Nedeljkovic, who spent parts of two seasons in the Penguins’ crease, stopped 24 shots and dropped to 0-2-1. San Jose remains the only team without a win this season.

ERNIE ELS GOES BOGEY-FREE AGAIN TO KEEP DOMINION ENERGY LEAD

Ernie Els fired a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday at The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond to build a two-stroke lead going into the final round of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

For the second day in a row, the 56-year-old South Africa native produced a bogey-free round.

“Well, that’s never a goal of mine, to keep a clean scorecard, it just happened that way,” Els said. “But it’s nice, means I’m playing solid.”

South Korea’s Y.E. Yang and Germany’s Bernhard Langer also posted 67s to stay within two strokes of Els. South Africa’s Retief Goosen (68) and first-round co-leader Justin Leonard (70) are another shot behind as 17 of the top 18 in the standings through 36 holes broke par on a picturesque Saturday.

“Just a joy,” Els said. “I mean, the golf course is just so pure. The weather conditions have been just absolutely fabulous. Tomorrow we’re getting a little bit more breeze, it’s going to be a little bit more challenging.”

Langer, who has two Dominion Energy titles on his resume, will play with Els in Sunday’s final group after shrugging off a triple-bogey 6 at No. 14 to finish with four straight birdies.

“It was a triple bogey and it wasn’t even a bad shot,” Langer said. “Yeah, pretty weird but it happens, I guess. Think you’ve seen it all and then something else comes up.”

Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez delivered the day’s finest round – a 7-under 65 that featured nine birdies and two bogeys – to climb 34 spots in the standings. He sits four shots behind Els along with Canada’s Mike Weir, Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and Australia’s Greg Chalmers.

Weir is among the group of golfers trying to climb into the top 54 on the Charles Schwab Cup points list in order to play at next week’s Simmons Bank Championship. He began the week at No. 71, but he’s currently projected to move to No. 53.

BUOYED BY LATE EAGLE, SEI YOUNG KIM STAYS ATOP BMW LADIES

Sei Young Kim carded a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday to carry a four-stroke lead heading into the final round of the BMW Ladies Championship in Haenam, South Korea.

Kim benefited from an eagle on the 17th hole to highlight an eventful day in which she had five birdies against four bogeys at Pine Beach Golf Links.

The Korean broke the 54-hole tournament scoring record with her three-day total of 19-under 197, and she is on pace to break the 72-hole mark of 266, set by Jin Young Ko and Hee Jeong Lim in 2021 at LPGA International Busan.

Kim is bidding for her 13th LPGA Tour victory of her career and first since 2020.

She is four shots better than Yealimi Noh (67 on Saturday) and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka (69).

Kim, however, said she is not trying to get ahead of herself.

“You just have to deal with the situation, whichever that you have, so that’s — I think that’s the homework that I have for (Sunday), and it’s really a fight against myself,” she said. “I think that applies to all sports games. I hope to succeed at that (on Sunday).”

This marks the second time that Kim has led or shared the lead after the first, second and third rounds of the same tournament on the LPGA Tour. She went on to win the other occasion, the 2019 CME Group Tour Championship.

Noh registered six birdies against one bogey on Saturday to keep Kim in her sights. The American is hoping to draw off her victory earlier this season at the Founders Cup.

“Just so much confidence, confidence that I really needed. And then it was a great start to the year,” Noh said of that win in February. “Obviously being one of the first events, and it just helped me keep that momentum and get it back this time of the year, too.”

American Brooke Matthews (74) triple-bogeyed the par-3 15th hole to fall six strokes back of Kim and into a tie for fourth place with South Korean Somi Lee (67), France’s Celine Boutier (69) and Japan’s Rio Takeda (72).

Korean A Lim Kim (68) and Sweden’s Linn Grant (69) are tied for eighth at 12-under, one shot ahead of defending champion Hannah Green (68) and fellow Australian Minjee Lee (71).

Korean Haeji Kang withdrew during the third round due to injury.

COLTS PLACE CB CHARVARIUS WARD SR. ON INJURED RESERVE, SIGN RB AMEER ABDULLAH TO 53-MAN ROSTER FROM PRACTICE SQUAD; ELEVATE CB CAMERON MITCHELL, WR LAQUON TREADWELL TO ACTIVE ROSTER FROM PRACTICE SQUAD FOR WEEK 7

The Colts on Saturday placed cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least the next four games.

Ward sustained a concussion during pregame warmups prior to the Colts’ Week 6 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Ward will miss games against the Los Angeles Chargers (Week 7), Tennessee Titans (Week 8), Pittsburgh Steelers (Week 9) and Atlanta Falcons (Week 10).

The Colts have a bye in Week 11; the earliest Ward could return is the Colts’ Week 12 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ward previously missed the Colts’ Week 2 win over the Denver Broncos with a concussion sustained in Week 1.

In a corresponding roster move, running back Ameer Abdullah on Saturday was signed to the Colts’ 53-man roster from the practice squad. Abdullah, a 10-year veteran, appeared in two games since joining the Colts’ practice squad in September, carrying three times for 13 yards with a touchdown and a nine-yard reception. The 32-year-old Abdullah has also spent time with the Detroit Lions (2015-2018), Minnesota Vikings (2018-2021), Carolina Panthers (2021) and Las Vegas Raiders (2022-2024).

Abdullah in his career has 2,007 yards on 497 carries with 20 total touchdowns.

The Colts on Saturday also elevated cornerback Cameron Mitchell and wide receiver Laquon Treadwell to their Week 7 active roster from the practice squad. On Friday, the Colts ruled out wide receivers Josh Downs (concussion) and Ashton Dulin (chest); on Saturday, running back Tyler Goodson was downgraded from questionable to out.

Mitchell, a 2023 fifth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, was active for the Colts’ Week 6 win over the Cardinals, while Treadwell appeared in two games for the Colts in 2024.

HOOSIERS DOWN SPARTANS

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –– Fear? Yeah, it was a motivator for an Indiana team determined to avoid complacency at all costs following its best-in-program-history victory at No. 3/2 Oregon against a struggling Michigan State squad pushing for a huge Saturday upset.

Focus? It stood out in multiple ways by multiple players as the No. 3/3 Hoosiers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium, scored 31 straight points after falling behind, and rolled to a 38-13 victory.

“It was a good win coming off a big road win,” head coach Curt Cignetti said. “There were a lot of issues to deal with after (the Oregon win) and the team and the coaches did a good job of focusing on this challenge.”

Louisville’s upset of second-ranked Miami on Friday night opened an opportunity for IU to jump to No. 2 in the national polls behind top-ranked and unbeaten Ohio State.

The Hoosiers (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) took advantage against the Spartans (3-4, 0-4) to retain the Old Brass Spittoon, symbolic of this rivalry.

“We made a big emphasis to have a hot start,” quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. “You see teams come off a big win and be complacent. Coach Cignetti made it a point throughout the week, never be complacent. Treat this team like every play is the game-winning play. We had that mindset.”

Cignetti saw danger during Thursday’s practice and addressed it, and if it meant being his players’ coach and not their friend, so be it.

“We started to slip a little bit in practice,” he said. “You can’t be a nice guy when you have a job like mine.”

Cignetti referred to Hall of Fame basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, who once famously said the biggest opponent he ever faced was human nature.

“My job is to make sure our players have the right mindset and they’re ready to play. It’s not always fun, but you have to do what you have to do.”

The Hoosiers embraced it.

“There were some mistakes in practice,” Mendoza said, “and Coach Cignetti gave a great talk about not being complacent. Michigan State is a great team. This is a rivalry game. Anything can happen. We have to attack this game with effort and focus to come out victorious.”

Added linebacker Aiden Fisher: “We had a humbling moment in practice. No game will be easy. A team won’t come in here and roll over. We’ll get the best punch from everybody.

“(Cignetti) wanted to make sure we didn’t feel too good about ourselves. We won a big game, and that’s the expectation here. Win those games and keep moving forward. Humble yourself, hone on the details, and be at your best when it’s needed.”

The Hoosiers were, nobody more so than Mendoza. He finished 24-for-28 for 332 yards and four touchdowns. He just missed a fifth touchdown pass to receiver E.J. Williams Jr. when Williams’ heel landed just out of bounds of the end zone.

“This is the sharpest we’ve seen him to this point in a game,” Cignetti said. “He continues to improve. He prepares like nobody I’ve ever been around and keeps getting better.”

Mendoza appreciated that praise even while deflecting it to teammates such as receivers Omar Cooper Jr. (eight catches, 121 yards, one touchdown), Elijah Sarratt (four catches, 70 yards, two touchdowns), and Williams Jr. (five, 59, one).

“We have so many great players,” he said. “We play better when we play as one. Whatever spotlight I might get, I try to dish it out to all of my teammates. They deserve it.

“Coach Cignetti is the best coach in college football. To hear that quote is inspiring, but this is only Week 7. There’s still a lot of season left, so my preparation needs to amp up to help get my guys the ball and help this offense be successful.”

Cooper Jr. deflected praise back to Mendoza.

“He hates hearing this,” Cooper Jr. said, “but I feel we have the best quarterback in college football. I’m grateful to have him. Seeing the progress he’s made every week is amazing.

“It’s his mentality, the way he attacks each week, the way he trusts us. He even makes plays with his legs. He’s a tough guy. He makes it easy.

“As receivers, we know we have to be in a certain position and he’ll get it to us.”

Not even a cold front that caused a 30-minue weather delay at halftime was a problem. Mendoza opened the third quarter by ignoring colder and windier conditions to drive the Hoosiers 75 yards in less than two minutes, the final 48 coming on a touchdown pass to Cooper Jr., for a 28-10 lead.

In essence, it was game over, and if the defense had a few glitches in giving up 367 total yards, it still recorded four sacks (two each by linebacker Rolijah Hardy and defensive lineman Stephen Daley) and nine tackles for loss.

“At times,” Fisher said, “we lost our discipline with our eyes and our keys. The first half could have been better. In the second half, we cleaned it up.”

Michigan State’s 38-yard field goal on the game’s opening possession gave it a 3-0 lead. IU countered with Mendoza’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Williams Jr. for a 7-3 late-first-quarter score.

The Spartans went ahead 10-7 with a 15-minute to five-minute edge in time of possession. Then Mendoza threw 19 yards to Williams Jr., 39 yards to tight end Riley Nowakowski and 24 yards to Sarratt. Just like that, IU led 14-10 with seven minutes left in the first half.

Running back Kaelon Black broke a couple of tackles during a 29-yard touchdown run and a 21-10 halftime score. Mendoza was 13-for-16 for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

After the weather delay, Mendoza threw 48 yards to Cooper Jr. for one touchdown and 27 yards to Sarratt for another TD. That put the Hoosiers ahead 35-10 in the third quarter. Both teams exchanged fourth-quarter field goals for the final score.

IU hosts UCLA next Saturday.

“We have lot of season left,” Mendoza said. “I’m focused on UCLA.”

BOILERS DROP ROAD MATCHUP AT NORTHWESTERN

EVANSTON, Ill. – Purdue Football fell to Northwestern 19-0 on the road Saturday.

The Wildcats controlled the game thanks to their time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 38 minutes compared to 22 for the Boilermakers. While Northwestern held a 364-305 advantage in total offense, the home team ran 20 more plays than Purdue.

Mani Powell produced a career-high 20 tackles, the most by a Boilermaker in the last 20 years. His 20-tackle performance is the first by a Big Ten player since 2018 and is one of 13 by a Big Ten player since 2005.

Powell added a forced fumble, the first of his career, and 1.5 tackles-for-loss.

Tahj Ra-El (11) and Alex Sanford Jr. (10) both produced double-digit tackles. Sanford’s total is a career high, and Ra-El tied his career high with three passes defended.

Malachi Singleton went 11-of-19 for 187 yards and added 20 rushing yards in relief of Ryan Browne, who was injured on the first play of the second half.

The Boilermakers forced their third turnover of the season during the fourth quarter when Hershey McLaurin knocked the ball out at the Purdue 18-yard line and Sanford Jr. recovered and returned the ball to the Purdue 28-yard line.

The forced fumble was McLaurin’s second of his career and the recovery was Sanford’s first.

Smiley Bradford followed later in the fourth quarter with Purdue’s second interception of the season and the first of his career. He finished the game with three passes defended.

Purdue returns to Ross-Ade Stadium to host homecoming against Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for noon on Big Ten Network.

IRISH RUNNING GAME ENDS SOUTHERN CAL UPSET BID

The 13th-ranked University of Notre Dame football team (5-2), powered by its offensive line and dynamic running back duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, defeated No. 20 Southern Cal (5-2) 34-24 in a rain-soaked but jubilant sold-out Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday night.

Love rushed for a career-best 228 yards and a touchdown, posting the 18th 200-yard rushing effort in program history. Price added 87 yards, a rushing touchdown and a scintillating 100-yard kick return to seize momentum late in the third quarter.

The offense was not the lone team highlight. The defense forced three turnovers in the second half, perhaps none bigger than captain Adon Shuler’s forced fumble in the fourth quarter, recovered by Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. Shuler led the team with 10 tackles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Southern Cal drove the length of the field quickly on their first possession after receiving the opening kickoff. Two first down passes moved the Trojans across the 50 followed by a 24-yard reception into the red zone. The touchdown came on a toe-tapping reception by tight end Lake McRee in the back corner of the end zone.

The Irish answered just as quickly. Love burst through a huge hole on the left side of the line between left guard Billy Schrauth and first-time starting center Joe Otting and galloped for 63 yards to the SC 12-yard line. Love danced through an arm tackle one play later, this time behind blocks from Eli Raridon, Anthonie Knapp and Aamil Wagner for a 12-yard touchdown. Notre Dame’s drive took just 58 seconds off the clock.

The Trojans moved quickly into scoring position again when SC quarterback Jordan Maiava desperation pass under pressure was caught 21 yards down field. The Irish defense held there, however, and Southern Cal converted a 41-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead.

Notre Dame earned one first down on its next drive before James Rendell came on to punt and bury the Trojans on the seven-yard line. The Irish defense forced a three-and-out but a 59-yard punt flipped the field again.

Rendell was soon called on to punt again after a Trojan sack set Notre Dame behind the sticks. The 47-yard kick was fielded at the SC 11.

Jaylen Sneed highlighted the defensive effort on the next drive for Notre Dame. Staying home on first down from his defensive end positioning he pressured the quarterback and forced an incompletion. He followed up with a run-stuff on second down to put SC in third and long. Donovan Hinish cleaned up a draw to force another Southern Cal punt.

Price broke open through a gaping hole in the Trojan defense behind Raridon, Guerby Lambert and Wagner for 32 yards and followed up immediately with eight more. After the quarter break Price finished off his drive with a 16-yard touchdown scamper around left end.

The next Irish defensive effort looked like they would force the Trojans into a third and very long when Junior Tuihalamaka pressured Maiava and forced a fumble. A dubious defensive hold call on Notre Dame when the receiver fell down negated the play.

Southern Cal drove deep into Notre Dame territory but the Irish defense stepped up to force a 4th-and-three at the 19-yard line. Drayk Bowen followed the tight end out of the backfield and broke up a pass with a big hit to end the scoring threat.

Carr and Faison got the drive started with a 15-yard connection. Love then put the Irish in scoring position with another long run behind key blocks from Schrauth, Knapp and Otting. The Irish drove as far as the three-yard line but came away without points when Carr scrambled back and forth twice on third-and-goal and threw an interception.

The Trojans took advantage of the turnover and another questionable call, this one a pass interference call at the goal line on a deep pass where both the Notre Dame defender and the offensive player were hand fighting with each other.

The Notre Dame defense stepped up yet again. Bowen buried the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage then SC subbed in a running quarterback in an attempt to run a quarterback sweep to the right. Tae Johnson completely erased the play by racing out of his safety position and dropping the quarterback for no gain.

Southern Cal had to settle for a field goal when a third down toss at the goal line was dropped.

Both teams attempted to score again in the final two minutes of the half but neither squad was able to threaten and the Irish entered the locker room with a one-point lead.

Notre Dame received the kickoff to start the second half and got started with a quick pass to Faison to the wide side of the field. He broke a tackle and gained 12. Love then ran around the left side of the line for 16 yards as Raridon sealed off the Trojan defensive front. The Irish running back followed up with six more, a quick reception for nine yards then converted on third-and-seven at the 18-yard line. That conversion was keyed from dominating blocks from Raridon, Schrauth, Otting and Lambert.

The Irish cashed in on their scoring opportunity on third down when Will Pauling easily beat his defender to the inside of the slot and Carr hit him between the numbers for a six-yard touchdown.

The officiating crew aided Southern Cal’s next scoring drive with pass interference calls, one of which was warranted while the other was another questionable yellow rag. Notre Dame’s defense rose up yet again in the red zone. Jason Onye’s run-stuff led to a third-and-three. Dallas Golden blanketed his assignment and Southern Cal had to settle for a 43-yard field goal. The Irish lead was cut to 21-16.

Notre Dame’s offense could not move the ball on its next drive and Rendell came on to punt again, pushing Southern Cal back to their 29-yard line.

The Trojans did not stay in their territory long. Yet another pass interference call provided the visitors a first down and Maiava followed up by connecting with Ja’Kobi Lane for a 59-yard scoring strike.

The Southern Cal 24-21 lead lasted all of 15 seconds. Price fielded the kickoff just inside his end zone, broke a tackle, cut to the right sideline, broke another tackle and out-legged the entire USC coverage team for a thrilling 100-yard kick return. Notre Dame missed the point after for a 27-24 lead.

The momentum continued on the defensive side for Notre Dame when Christian Gray stepped in front of a receiver across the middle and intercepted the pass, returning it to the SC 44 yard-line.

Notre Dame drove into scoring position and unfortunately stalled there and missed a field goal.

The Trojans looked to come back to take the lead but the Irish defense made perhaps the biggest play of the game. Southern Cal hit a 42-yard pass into Irish territory but on the next play, went to a reverse pass with wide receiver Makai Lemon looking to pass. Adon Shuler saw the play the whole way, broke into the backfield, pushed Lemon back 13 yards then stripped the ball away. Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa was right there to jump on the fumble and the Irish were in business in SC territory.

Malachi Fields made his lone catch of the game on the drive, but the nine-yard grab on 2nd-and-10 provided the necessary flexibility to get the ball back in Love’s hands. He powered for the first down on third and two, then broke runs for 15 and 16 down to the five-yard line.

From there, Carr kept the ball twice, including scoring behind a key block from Love, to put the Irish up 10 with just over seven minutes remaining.

The drama wasn’t over at that point but the scoring was. Sneed continued his great game with a fourth-and-one stop at the Southern Cal 44. The Irish could not score on the drive and the Trojans kept coming, driving into Notre Dame territory late in the game.

Luke Talich ended the game, however, with an interception of a wounded duck pass toward the end and the Irish went into victory formation.

+++++++BALL STATE FOOTBALL+++++++

FOOTBALL ZIPS PAST AKRON FOR HOMECOMING VICTORY

MUNCIE, Ind. – – Kiael Kelly accounted for four touchdowns and the Ball State defense came up with a pair of clutch interceptions following an hour-long weather delay to lead football to a 42-28 homecoming win over Akron in front of 12,248 fans Saturday at Scheumann Stadium.

With the victory, the Cardinals (3-4, 2-1 MAC) moved above .500 in Mid-American Conference play and handed the Zips (2-6, 1-3 MAC) a second straight defeat. It was the Cardinals’ fourth consecutive victory on homecoming, marking the program’s longest homecoming win streak since a record seven-year run in the 1990s.

With Ball State leading 35-25 after Kelly’s third rushing touchdown of the game, a one-yard rush around the left side of the offensive line, Akron took the ensuing kickoff down to the one-yard line before heavy rain and lightning in the area led to a one-hour delay.

Coming out of the delay, the Zips were denied a touchdown thanks to a third-and-one stop from linebackers Alfred Chea and Caden Johnson. That forced Akron to settle for a 19-yard field goal, cutting the Ball State advantage to 35-28.

What happened next turned out to be the biggest play of the game, as TJ Horton collected the kickoff at the 10-yard line, broke several tackles in the middle of the field, and ultimately reached the end zone for a 90-yard touchdown to help BSU recapture the two-score lead at 42-28. It was Ball State’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Malcolm Gillie returned one 97 yards on Oct. 5 last season versus Western Michigan.

From there, the defense took over with defensive backs Roman Pearson and Joedrick Lewis sealing the victory with interceptions on the next two drives to halt any attempt at a comeback from Akron.

Overall, Kelly accounted for 121 yards and one touchdown through the air, while adding 58 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. His first score was a three-yard rush on Ball State’s second drive to answer an eight-point opening drive from the Zips.

After the defense held Akron to a three-and-out, Kelly busted a third-and-18 play from BSU’s 46-yard line for 33 yards, before scoring two plays later on a 26-yard scamper. The effort gave Ball State a 14-8 advantage late in the opening quarter.

However, the Zips were able to reclaim the lead at 15-14 with 1:26 remaining in the opening half.

Ball State’s leading rusher on the day, Qua Ashley, would give the hosts the lead for good a little over five minutes into the second half with the game’s longest play from scrimmage, a 69-yard run through the Akron defense and then up the right sideline.

Ashley would also add a 27-yard run and finish the game with 143 total yards on the ground, his second-highest rushing total this season.

After an Akron field goal cut the lead to 21-18 with 7:28 remaining in the third quarter, Kelly hooked up with Koby Gross for a 29-yard touchdown to cap a 72-yard scoring drive. The play gave the Cardinals a 28-18 edge with 5:52 remaining in the third.

Gross also hauled in a 42-yard reception, the longest passing play of the game, and led the Ball State offense with 81 receiving yards.

Akron’s final touchdown came with 24 seconds remaining in the third, briefly cutting the lead to 28-25, before Kelly’s final rushing touchdown set up the final series of events.

On the defensive front defensive end Nathan Voorhis registered his MAC-leading ninth sac of the season and tallied five total tackles, while defensive back Michael Gravely Jr. recorded a team-high seven tackles.

Ball State travels to Northern Illinois next Saturday to continue its Bronze Stalk rivalry series with a 3:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff at Huskie Stadium.

SYCAMORES UNABLE TO KEEP FIRST-HALF MOMENTUM IN SATURDAY LOSS TO NO. 1/1 NORTH DAKOTA STATE

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – No. 1/1 North Dakota State pulled away from the Sycamores in the second half as Indiana State fell to the Bison on a wet and windy day at Memorial Stadium, 38-7.

The Sycamores (2-5, 0-4) trailed the Bison (7-0, 4-0) 10-7 at the half as the Sycamore defense turned in a solid effort over the opening 30 minutes. Indiana State struck first as Jorge Valdes intercepted a tipped Cole Payton pass inside the red zone, and the Sycamores converted on the other end with Nick Osho taking a three-yard touchdown plunge to put Indiana State ahead 7-0 with 4:11 to play in the first quarter.

NDSU rallied back before the break with a Truman Werremeyer three-yard touchdown pass from Payton and Eli Ozick connected on a 54-yard field goal to give the Bison the 10-7 lead just before the halftime break.

Coming out of the half, lightning struck as the teams were forced to sit through a 2:17 delay before reconvening play on the field around 5 p.m.

Indiana State quarterback Keegan Patterson threw an interception on the first play of the second half and the Bison converted it into points as Payton took it himself for a three-yard touchdown run to stretch the NDSU lead to 17-7. From there, it was all Bison as NDSU outgained the Sycamores 261-66 in the second half with Barika Kpeenu highlighting the offense with two rushing touchdowns, while DJ Scott added a fourth quarter score to provide the final 38-7 margin.

Indiana State had its moments throughout the game as the Sycamores went deep in the playbook with punter Harry Traum gaining 18 yards on a fake punt attempt, while Nick Osho added his team-leading seventh rushing touchdown of the season.

Patterson went 14-of-24 through the air for 107 yards with Zack Drawdy Jr. (three catches, 49 yards) and Rashad Rochelle (three catches, 18 yards) the favorite targets. Osho recorded a team-high 16 carries for 48 yards and a rushing touchdown to pace the rushing game.

Kimal Clark led three Sycamores with double-digit tackles on Saturday afternoon as the redshirt senior safety posted a game-high 15 stops on the game. Braxton Sampson (13) and Drew Covington (10) were also in double-digits on the day, while Lucas McAllister finished with five tackles, 1.0 sacks, and 1.5 tackles-for-loss on the afternoon.

Payton went 12-of-18 for 149 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding 10 carries for 71 yards and a score on the ground. Kpeenu led the NDSU rushing efforts with 23 carries for 113 yards and two scores, while Bryce Lance had four catches for 74 yards to lead the receiving game.

Peder Haugo and Logan Kopp led the NDSU defense with seven tackles apiece, while Keenan Wilson had a team-high 2.0 tackles-for-loss. Jaylin Crumby recorded NDSU’s interception in the win.

News & Notes

Nick Osho recorded his team-leading seventh rushing touchdown of the 2025 season and eighth overall as the redshirt junior running back scored in the first quarter on Saturday afternoon.

Osho’s seven rushing touchdowns marks the most by an Indiana State running back since Dominique Dafney recorded seven rushing scores back in the 2019 season.

Kimal Clark recorded a season-high 15 tackles, putting him second in the MVFC this season with 73 total stops through the first seven games of the season.

The redshirt senior safety currently is averaging 10.43 tackles per game through his first season with the Sycamores.

Braxton Sampson (13) and Drew Covington (10) both recorded career-high tackling efforts on Saturday afternoon.

The Sycamores fall to 2-2 at Memorial Stadium this season.

+++++++VALPO FOOTBALL+++++++

BEACONS DROP MATCHUP WITH TOMMIES

The Valparaiso University football team put together an impressive game-opening drive, but it was mostly St. Thomas from that point forward as the Beacons fell 55-17 at O’Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. against a Tommies team that is notoriously tough to beat on its home field.

How It Happened

The Beacons struck first, assembling a 10-play, 78-yard drive that finished with a 3-yard touchdown leap by Caron Tyler (Temecula, Calif. / Chaparral) to make it 7-0 with 9:04 left in the first quarter. Ryan Ricketti (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River) had three catches on the drive, while Michael Mansaray (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) had four carries for 24 yards on the opening series.

A 44-yard catch by Quentin Cobb-Butler set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Joseph Koch as the Tommies responded right away, tying the game at seven with 6:35 left in the opening quarter.

The second Valpo drive ended with an interception and a return to the Valpo 4-yard line. The defense did good work to force a fourth down including a big tackle for loss by Mark Johnson (Nashville, Tenn. / Lipscomb Academy) on third down, but the Tommies scored on fourth-and-goal from the four on a pass to Pat Bowen.

The Valpo defense limited the damage in the red zone again to keep St. Thomas to a field goal on its next drive, as Ben Hoiland hit from 38, then the Tommies added a 20-yard rushing TD by QB Amari Powell that lifted the lead to 24-7 with 9:40 left in the first half.

The Beacons were aided by two key St. Thomas penalties on their next drive, which finished with kicker Luke Scoma (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue) drilling a 39-yard field goal to make it 24-10 with 3:25 left in the second quarter.

JaShawn Todd made a 56-yard TD catch to make it 31-10 with 2:33 left in the first half. They tacked on three more when Hoiland made a 43-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in the opening half.

St. Thomas added on in the third quarter, building up a 48-10 lead before Chris Gundy (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) broke off a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 48-17 with 3:44. St. Thomas added one more score to account for the final.

Inside the Game

Scoma’s field goal was his fifth make of the season.

Tyler’s touchdown was his first on the ground this season and the fourth of his career.

Gundy’s kickoff return TD was the second by the Beacons this season. It marked his first career return TD and fourth overall score.

The team’s top tackler was O.C. Nurse (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park [Marietta]), who accrued eight stops. He over doubled his tackle total for the season as he had seven all year prior to Saturday.

Mansaray ran for 121 yards on 20 carries to lead the team. He had his highest rushing total since the season opener vs. Virginia Lynchburg (134).

The Beacons were hurt by turnovers, losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions.

Avoiding penalties continued to be a bright spot as the Beacons were flagged just twice. Valpo has committed more penalties than the opponent just once in seven games this season. This marked the fourth time this year that Valpo was flagged three times or fewer.

Ricketti was the team’s top receiver with career-high five catches including three on the opening drive. He finished with 64 yards through the air, also a personal best.

Redshirt sophomore Nic Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) had five tackles in the game, helping him cross the 100-tackle milestone for his collegiate career.

St. Thomas improved to 36-4 in its last 40 home games.

Up Next

Valpo (1-6, 0-3 PFL) will host Morehead State as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend next week with a noon kickoff at Brown Field. For ticket information, visit tickets.valpoathletics.com.

HOUNDS CASH IN FOR 62 POINTS VERSUS LINCOLN

INDIANAPOLIS – The 15th-ranked UIndy football team won its sixth straight Saturday afternoon, delivering an emphatic 62-7 victory against visiting Lincoln University. The Greyhounds outgained the Blue Tigers by nearly 500 yards and have now generated at least 56 points in each of the last three weeks.

INS & OUTS

UIndy put Lincoln away early, building a three-score lead by the end of the first quarter and a 45-7 advantage by the half. Garrett Sherrell racked up 158 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns before intermission, while QB Gavin Sukup managed more than 200 passing yards and three TDs.

The Greyhound reserves took over in the third quarter, authoring three more scoring drives before the game was called due to incoming severe thunderstorms.

Sukup played just two quarters, finishing 15-for-19 passing for 206 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. The Harlon Hill Award candidate has thrown for 13 TDs and zero INTs in the last three weeks.

All told, six Greyhounds found the end zone, with both Sherrell and fellow-RB Juseters Fataki scoring twice apiece. Freshmen Cole Bennett and Caiden Verrett both notched their first career TDs.

Defensively, UIndy held its guest to just 88 total yards—lowest for a Greyhound opponent since Quincy mustered only 56 in the unique spring-of-2021 season.

Sophomore Alvin Contreras garnered his second interception of the season with a diving pick late in the first half, and later redshirt-sophomore Jordan Lee corralled a tipped ball and returned it 36 yards for his first collegiate INT.

Danny Royster had a sack and a QB hurry, Julian Dandridge was credited with 1.5 tackles for a loss, while Jalen Wilson amassed a team-high five tackles.

INSIDE THE BOX

– Sherrell led the Greyhounds with 126 yards rushing on just nine carries, including a 75-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

– Back-up QBs Josh Keith and Clay Hayden contributing a combining 116 yards, giving the team 322 passing yards on the day.

– Redshirt-freshman Cayden Olinger compiled a career-high 80 receiving yards on three catches. He was one of 11 Hounds with at least one reception.

– Redshirt-sophomore Eli Carter had two pass break-ups, one of which led directly to the Lee interception.

– The Hounds were 2-for-2 on field goal tries, with Andrew Herron connecting on a 23-yard try and Kyle Trilling good from 34 yards out.

UP NEXT

The Greyhounds start a stretch of three weeks without a home game, starting with a bye week next weekend followed by road games at Quincy and Southwest Baptist.

KNIGHTS CRUSH COUGARS IN FRANCISCAN BOWL SHUTOUT

INDIANAPOLIS – Backed by a ball-hawking defense that forced five turnovers and a four-touchdown game from Keagan La Belle, the Marian football team routed Saint Francis 49-0, shutting out the Cougars to win back the Franciscan Bowl trophy. Marian’s rivalry win over Saint Francis vaults the Knights to 6-1 on the season, winning their first MSFA Midwest contest of the season.

The Knights wasted little time driving down the field, getting on the scoreboard, receiving the opening kickoff, and marching 62 yards to the end zone. Two big runs from Keagan La Belle and a 23-yard dash from Tristan Polk drove Marian into the red zone, with La Belle finishing the drive with a two-yard score. Marian’s defense followed the score by getting a hold, forcing the Cougars into a field goal attempt on their first drive. The kick would miss wide left, and immediately the Knights dialed up a deep ball, as Tristan Polk connected with Montasi Clay to set up a red zone opportunity. La Belle finished the drive with three consecutive runs inside the eight, scoring on another two-yard scamper to make it a 14-0 game.

The defense began lights-out play on the next snap from scrimmage following the second of La Belle’s scores, as Logan Carrington nabbed his NAIA-leading sixth interception of the season. Marian was unable to score off the turnover as a lost fumble would kill the momentum, but as the game shifted into the second quarter, the Knights regained the energy flow with the defense forcing a turnover on downs early in the ensuing period.

The two rivals exchanged punts after the defensive stand, as the game stood in a 14-0 pattern. The Marian offense got back into gear after forcing the punt, and marched behind two chunk passes from Tristan Polk to Montasi Clay and Jake Reichard to get into the red zone. Keagan La Belle finished off the drive with his third touchdown of the half, racing in from 10 yards to push Marian to a 21-0 lead.

Marian dominated defensively over the remainder of the half, forcing a takeaway and a punt going into the break. Isaiah Street recorded a strip-sack of Josh Kulka following La Belle’s touchdown run, but the Knights failed to add to their lead as Kenny Curry missed a field goal. The defense would force a punt, but after getting the ball back in prime position following the two-minute timeout, Marian came up without points, kicking the ball away after a penalty marred their drive. The second punt of the half for Dean Mason all but ended the half, as Marian ran into the locker room with a 21-0 lead over Saint Francis.

Coming out of the half, the defense forced a quick three-and-out, and the offense went to work, dropping 21 points in the third quarter. Tristan Polk scored the first of three touchdowns in the quarter with a six-yard race to the pylon, while a Reis Walker interception set up the fourth touchdown of the game for Keagan La Belle. La Belle’s score came after a deflected catch from offensive lineman and his former high school teammate Razhaun Wells put Marian in the red zone. Wells’ first career offensive touch and 29-yard gain put Marian in the red zone before La Belle scored two plays later.

A defensive three-and-out would bring the offense back on the field, this time seeing Alijah Price dash into the end zone. The freshman’s two-yard touchdown gave Marian a 42-0 lead with under 18 minutes to play in the game.

The Knights’ defense closed the contest strong, ending a scoring threat from Saint Francis with a Yassine Falke at the start of the fourth quarter, while Curtis Foust picked off Kulka in the last two minutes to preserve the shutout. Prior to the Foust interception the Marian offense milked nearly eight minutes off the game clock, using 14 snaps to score as Hunter Newman found paydirt from three yards out. Newman’s touchdown completed the scoring, sealing Marian’s 49-0 shutout victory over No. 24 Saint Francis.

Marian’s defense allowed just 162 yards to the Cougars, while the offense racked up 377 yards in the win. La Belle rushed for a game-high 60 yards, scoring four touchdowns on his 21 carries in the game. Price finished the afternoon with 50 yards, and Polk ran for another 25 while scoring on the ground. The quarterback Polk also passed for 235 yards, completing 13 of 17 passes. Montasi Clay led the receivers with 103 yards on three grabs, while Jake Reichard had 46 yards on four catches.

Defensively, Cade Houseman led the team in tackles with 12 total stops, while JT Downey made nine tackles. Isaiah Street finished the afternoon with six tackles, two of which were sacks. Logan Carrington, Curtis Foust, Yassine Falke, and Reis Walker each had an interception, while Darian Dixon recovered a fumble on Street’s strip-sack.

Marian continues their MSFA Midwest stretch next weekend, traveling to No. 23 Olivet Nazarene with a six-game winning streak. Kickoff against the Tigers in Bourbonnais, Illinois, at 1:00 p.m. ET.
