BREWERS BEAT CUBS 3-1 IN GAME 5 OF NL DIVISION SERIES TO EARN NLCS MATCHUP WITH DODGERS
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ending their recent run of playoff frustration earned the Milwaukee Brewers a new nickname from their manager.
Pat Murphy has referred to his team as the “Average Joes,” a nod to their small-market status and lack of big names. But after the Brewers beat the rival Chicago Cubs 3-1 in the decisive fifth game of their NL Division Series on Saturday night, Murphy decided it was time for an upgrade.
“You can call them the average Joes,” Murphy said, “but I say they’re the above-average Joes.”
The Brewers relied on contributions from just about all of them to get past the Cubs.
Andrew Vaughn hit a tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning and William Contreras and Brice Turang also went deep. Trevor Megill, Jacob Misiorowski, Aaron Ashby, Chad Patrick and Abner Uribe combined on a four-hitter, with Uribe getting six outs for the first multi-inning save of his career.
“It takes every single one of these guys in the locker room, and they’ve done it,” Turang said. “We’ve got to keep going.”
The Brewers, making their seventh playoff appearance in eight years, earned their first postseason series win since sweeping Colorado in a 2018 NLDS. Milwaukee was on the verge of its second World Series berth that year before losing Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, the Brewers get another NLCS matchup with the defending World Series champion Dodgers, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies in four games in the other NL Division Series. Game 1 is Monday at Milwaukee as the Brewers chase their first pennant since 1982 — back when they played in the American League.
After losing slugging shortstop Willy Adames in free agency and trading away All-Star closer Devin Williams last winter, the scrappy Brewers finished the regular season with the best record in the majors at 97-65.
They’ve reached the NLCS nine months after the death of Bob Uecker, who broadcast Brewers games for 54 seasons and is probably more synonymous with the franchise than any player.
As the Brewers posed for a postgame picture on the field, they had a banner in front of them with Uecker’s signature. The sellout crowd roared before the game when the scoreboard video showed a fan holding a sign with the message: “Do It For Bob Uecker.”
“It was important to these guys — because it’s the rival — to finish the job,” Murphy said. “And they know Ueck is smiling.”
The victory was particularly sweet for Milwaukee fans because it came against the club’s biggest rival and knocked Cubs manager Craig Counsell out of the postseason.
Counsell grew up in the Milwaukee area, played for the Brewers and became the winningest manager in team history until he left for Chicago.
In the two seasons since Counsell’s departure, Brewers fans have booed every mention of his name whenever the Cubs have visited American Family Field. They did it again Saturday, though the sellout crowd appeared to include more Cubs backers than in Milwaukee’s Game 1 and Game 2 home victories.
The Cubs were attempting to become the 11th team to erase a 2-0 deficit and win a best-of-five playoff series, a feat last accomplished by the New York Yankees against Cleveland in their 2017 ALDS.
“I’m disappointed. I’m sad,” Counsell said. “I think this team did a lot to honor the Chicago Cub uniform. In the big picture, that’s how I feel.”
Homers produced all the runs in this winner-take-all game, and each of Milwaukee’s came with two outs.
Contreras hit a 389-foot shot to left-center off Drew Pomeranz in the first inning. Vaughn sent a 3-2 pitch from Colin Rea over the left-field wall to break a 1-all tie, and Turang provided some insurance with a 416-foot drive to center off Andrew Kittredge in the seventh.
“We fight back. That’s our mentality,” Vaughn said. “We’re going to punch someone else. We’re going to throw it right back.”
Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki greeted Misiorowski by sending a 101.4 mph fastball into the Cubs bullpen leading off the second, but that was the only run the rookie right-hander allowed in four innings as he earned his second win of the series.
“It’s been crazy,” the 23-year-old Misiorowski said. “It’s been a whirlwind and it’s been fun.”
The Brewers brought in Misiorowski after Megill retired the side in order in the first. The Cubs had totaled 11 first-inning runs in the first four games of the series without ever going scoreless in the opening frame.
After Suzuki’s homer, they didn’t score again Saturday.
Chicago’s best threat came when it put two on with nobody out in the sixth against Ashby, who had thrown 32 pitches two nights earlier in Milwaukee’s Game 4 loss. Michael Busch hit a leadoff single before Ashby grazed Nico Hoerner with a pitch.
Ashby got Kyle Tucker to strike out swinging at a 3-2 pitch for the first out. Patrick then came out of the bullpen and retired Suzuki on a fly to left before Ian Happ struck out looking.
“You set a goal to win the World Series every year,” Busch said. “You come up short, so it stings no matter what.”
The Brewers exorcised some demons to finish off the series.
They entered the ninth inning with a two-run lead, just as they did in the decisive game of last year’s NL Wild Card Series against the New York Mets. Milwaukee lost that game when Williams allowed four runs in the final inning, including a three-run homer by Pete Alonso.
This time, the Brewers had no reason to worry as Uribe retired the side in order.
“We talked about it before the game,” Murphy said. “It absolutely entered my mind. We talked about it at the end of last season. We sat down in the room. We were all shell-shocked. And I said, ‘Guys, I don’t know what to tell you. Somehow this is going to help us.’ And sure enough, it was prophetic.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS
INDIANA STAYS UNDEFEATED, HANDS OREGON 1ST LOSS
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Fernando Mendoza threw for 215 yards and a key fourth-quarter touchdown and No. 7 Indiana remained undefeated with a 30-20 victory over No. 3 Oregon on Saturday.
Roman Hemby added a pair of scoring runs for the Hoosiers (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten), who frustrated the Ducks (5-1, 2-1) with stout defensive play. The win was Indiana’s first over a top-five team since beating then-No. 3 Purdue 19-14 in 1967.
Dante Moore threw for 186 yards and a touchdown, but has two passes intercepted and was sacked six times in Oregon’s first Big Ten regular-season loss. It snapped an 18-game winning streak at Autzen Stadium, the longest active streak in the nation.
With Oregon down 20-13 going into the fourth quarter, Brandon Finney intercepted Mendoza’s pass and ran it back 35 yards to tie it with 12:42 left. Mendoza answered with an 8-yard scoring pass to Elijah Sarratt with 6:23 to go to give Indiana the lead for good.
On Oregon’s next series, Moore’s pass was intercepted by Louis Moore and Brendan Franke added a 22-yard field goal for the Hoosiers with 2:06 left for the final margin.
“Our defense was tremendous in the second half, our kicking game was really good all day, and the offense made plays when they had to,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. “Mendoza extended plays, made plays with his legs. And the play to Sarratt, obviously, was huge, huge.”
Both sides were coming off weeks off. In their last game, the Ducks beat Penn State 30-24 in double-overtime on the road in the annual White Out game. The Hoosiers beat Iowa 20-15 on the road.
Asked how significand the win was for the Hoosiers’ program, Cignetti was pragmatic.
“Well, it depends on what we do with it from here,” he said. “You know, it’s a great win against the (No. 3 ranked) team in the country on the road who had an 18-game home winning streak, right? And it puts us in position, if we can continue to be successful, which means we have to show up to work on Monday as a team, humble and hungry.”
On the first series of the game, the Ducks failed at a fourth-and-1 attempt, giving the Hoosiers good field position for their opening drive. It ended with Nico Radicic’s 42-yard field goal.
Oregon pulled ahead with Moore’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Malik Benson but Hemby rushed for a 3-yard touchdown before the end of the first quarter to make it 10-7.
Atticus Sappington’s 40-yard field goal tied it up for the Ducks, but a later 36-yard attempt that would have given Oregon the lead went wide left.
Franke kicked a 58-yard field goal as time ran out to give Indiana a 13-10 advantage at the break.
Sappington’s 33-yard field goal in the third quarter tied it again for Oregon but Hemby added his second touchdown for the Hoosiers, a two-yard dash late in the period.
The loss was a learning opportunity, said Oregon coach Dan Lanning.
“We didn’t have a fastball today,” Lanning said. “Everybody wants to look at players and say, ‘Oh this is the reason.’ That was a team effort, right? And that was a team loss, right? And their team played better than us. It wasn’t Dante. It was the whole group, the coaching staff, the players.”
The takeaway
Oregon will no doubt fall while Indiana will rise in the AP Top 25. The tight game was reminiscent of last year’s regular-season showdown between Oregon and Ohio State at Autzen, when the Ducks prevailed 32-31. This game, too, could still have Big Ten title and College Football Playoff implications, but the Ducks don’t have the No. 1 Buckeyes on the schedule this year. Neither do the Hoosiers.
It ain’t over
Lanning reminded his team afterward that there’s still football to be played.
“It’s hard to go unscathed in college football, especially against a good team. They played a better game than us, they were better coached than us today. And our guys recognize that every one of our goals is still in front of us and an opportunity to attack,” Lanning said.

A Kaden Feagin rush of 9 moved the Illinois to the Ohio State 31. The clocked stopped for the two-minute timeout at the OSU25 following a completion of 6 yards to Jordan Anderson. Illinois then scored three plays later on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Justin Bowick with 1:23 to go in the half. Ohio State was called for pass interference on the play and the play was then ruled incomplete to negate the score. The Illini moved to the OSU1 on a shovel pass before the Buckeyes called timeout with 1:12 to go. After the break, Illinois was called for a false start for a loss of 5 to the OSU6. Ohio State called another timeout. Illinois followed with an incompletion on third-and-6 leading to a 24-yard field goal by David Olano to make it 20-3 Buckeyes. Illinois opened the half with the ball and quickly drove to the OSU20. The Buckeyes held Illinois out of the endzone on an Altmyer rush left just short of the goal line. Facing a fourth-and-goal and just inches shy of a touchdown, the Illini scored on a 1-yard pitch right to Aidan Laughery to make it 20-10. The opening drive of the half covered 75 yards on 12 plays while using 4:54. Sayin moved the Buckeyes to the ILL42 on Ohio State’s second play of their next possession on a 22-yard completion to Max Klare. Illinois called a timeout with the Buckeyes facing third-and-6 from the Illinois 37. The Illini were called for offsides after the break and the Buckeyes got the first down on a 4-yard completion to Will Kacmarek. After a Smith rush for 6 and an Ohio State timeout, Donaldson rushed for 8 over the left side to the Illinois 15. The Buckeyes kept the drive alive on a fourth-and-1 at the Illinois 6 on a 3-yard Saying keeper. Three players later, Donaldson got the touchdown over the right side for a 27-10 Ohio State lead. The drive answered the Illinois score with 14 plays covering 63 yards while using 7:52. Illinois was forced backwards on after a sack and fumble to give the Buckeyes the ball at the Illinois 24. Jermaine Mathews Jr. got the sack and forced fumble that was recovered by Caden Curry. Sayin threw an incompletion before hitting Tate for 8 yards to the ILL16. Donaldson earned a first down with a 4-yard carry right of center to the Illinois 12. Donaldson added another carry of 4 yards right up the middle to end the quarter with Ohio State at the ILL8.

On the move, Illinois started quick with a 17-yard completion to the OSU44. The Illinois earned positive yardage on each of its next five plays before a rush for no gain on third-and 1 at the OSU21. After a short rush for a first down, the Buckeyes were flagged for pass interference to move the ball to the OSU4. Illinois reached the endzone on the next play on a pass over the middle to Collin Dixon. A two-point conversion attempt failed to make it 34-16 Buckeyes with 4:25 left in the game. The Buckeyes ran some clock with three-consecutive rushes before an Illinois timeout with 2:49 left. After the break, Altmyer connected for gains of 15 and 20 yards to the OSU29. Arvell Reese then sacked Altmyer for a loss of 10 back to the OSU39. Illinois called timeout with 1:32 to go. Altmyer responded with a 14-yard strike to Rusk to the OSU25. The Buckeyes then got the ball back on downs after a pair of incompletions. Ohio State then ran out the clock for the 34-16 win.

Running back Quintrevion Wisner tallied a season-best 94 rushing yards, highlighted by a season-long 37-yard run. Wisner also added five catches for 35 yards. Texas rushed for 136 yards in the game.
Texas’ defense was on full display as three separate Longhorns had five or more tackles, while holding the Sooners to zero points in the second half. Texas also limited its opponent under 100 rushing yards for the fifth time in its first six games. The Texas defense came up with three interceptions and won the turnover battle 3-0.
Oklahoma struck first with a 42-yard field goal by kicker Tate Sandell. Later in the first quarter, defensive back Malik Muhammad intercepted a pass from quarterback John Mateer, giving Texas possession at its own 42-yard line. This was Muhammad’s second career interception.
Texas kept up their defensive effort when Edge Colin Simmons recorded his third consecutive game with a sack after bringing down Mateer for a five yard loss, ultimately holding Oklahoma to a 41-yard field goal, extending their lead over Texas 6-0.
The Longhorns shifted the momentum on the following drive after a 37-yard rush from running back Quintrevion Wisner, his longest of the season. A few plays later, Texas cut the score to 6-3 with a 22-yard field goal from kicker Mason Shipley with 4:29 remaining in the second quarter.
Towards the end of the half, Muhammed grabbed his second interception of the game to stop the OU drive. He is the first Longhorn to notch a multi-interception performance in the Allstate Red River Rivalry since Dylan Haines accomplished the feat on Oct. 8, 2016. Texas went into the locker room trailing 6-3.
The Longhorns opened the second half with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Manning to wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. Manning went 6-for-6 on the drive, giving Texas a 10-6 lead over Oklahoma with 7:49 left in the third quarter. This was Moore Jr.’s eight career touchdown reception.
Texas regained possession at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter. Manning connected with Wisner for a 19-yard gain to the Oklahoma 49-yard line, setting up a 48-yard field goal by Shipley. The kick, his longest of the season, extended the Longhorns’ lead to 13-6.
Early in the fourth quarter, defensive back Graceson Littleton recorded his second career interception. The Longhorns’ three interceptions marked their most in a Red River Rivalry game since 2002.
Texas kept its momentum going during the fourth quarter when Ryan Niblett returned a 48-yard punt 75 yards for his first career punt return touchdown, extending the Longhorns’ lead to 20-6 with 9:59 remaining. It was the longest punt return by a Texas player in the Red River Rivalry since 2013.
Shipley extended Texas’ lead with a 39-yard field goal at the 2:59 mark of the fourth quarter to 23-6. On Oklahoma’s final drive, quarterback John Mateer was sacked for a three-yard loss by linebackers Brad Spence and Lance Jackson, turning the ball over on downs with 1:03 remaining. Texas ran out the clock to secure a 23-6 victory over No. 6/6 Oklahoma.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to Lexington, Ky., to face Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 6 or 6:45 p.m. CT on ESPN or SEC Network.

BRONCOS NEED TO AVOID LETDOWN VS. WINLESS JETS IN LONDON
The Denver Broncos feel the momentum percolating after taking down the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles last week.
The last thing they want to do is experience a huge letdown seven days later.
The Broncos (3-2) take aim at their third consecutive victory when they face the woeful New York Jets (0-5) on Sunday in London.
New York is not only the lone winless team in the NFL, but it is also the first team in league history to start 0-5 without forcing a single turnover.
One thing standing out to the Broncos is that two of the Jets’ losses came by two points.
“They’re a good football team,” Denver quarterback Bo Nix said Wednesday. “They’ve been close on some games. They were a couple of walk-off plays away from having two or three wins.
“I definitely think that is something you’ve got to be careful with. This is not a team to just toss around like they’re winless, but I think we will be ready to go.”
Denver linebacker Jonathon Cooper feels a stumble this week would take away a lot of the joy the Broncos felt by winning in Philadelphia.
“We definitely have to get honed in, get back focused and move onto the next game,” Cooper said. “You can’t live on this game and be like ‘Wow, we beat the Eagles’ and carry that into the week.”
Nix passed for a season-high 326 yards and accounted for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in a 28-3 trouncing of the visiting Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 29. He followed with 242 yards and one TD pass against the Eagles.
Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins has provided a big lift with 402 yards and four touchdowns. He ranks fifth in the NFL in rushing yardage and is tied for fourth in rushing scores.
You won’t find the Jets upset over playing this week at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They are receiving far less scrutiny on that side of the pond.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn didn’t hide his feelings.
“I really love the idea of us getting away,” he said. “… But the thing we’re not running from is the fact that we are 0-5 and there’s a lot of work for us to get done, and this is a really good week to try to hone in on those things, because there’s a lot of distraction on our side.
“But that’s what the NFL is, and you can’t run from that. I’m not running from that, either. We just have to work our ass off on a daily basis to get out of this hole.”
New York is coming off a 37-22 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Justin Fields completed 32 of 46 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns but was sacked five times.
Breece Hall rushed for a season-best 113 yards but lost a fumble deep in Dallas territory.
Now the Jets are looking to find a positive outcome, and Glenn said London has the right atmosphere.
“Man, we’re here to play a game,” Glenn said. “Our total focus is how do we go out there and beat the Broncos, and that’s what we are working on every day and I think our guys are looking at it that way, too. I don’t think — I know — everything we do while we’re here is focused on how do we beat the Broncos.”
Three Jets missed practice due to injury on Wednesday: edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II (ankle), cornerback Michael Carter II (concussion) and running back Kene Nwangwu (hamstring).
Sitting out for Denver were guard Ben Powers (biceps) and linebacker Jonah Elliss (ribs/shoulder).
The Broncos have won eight of the teams’ past 12 meetings, including a 10-9 road victory last season when Nix passed for just 60 yards.

LAMAR JACKSON’S STATUS CASTS SHADOW OVER RAVENS’ PREP FOR RAMS
The Los Angeles Rams hope a few extra days between games can make a world of difference for quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The 37-year-old veteran enjoyed a mini bye before the Rams (3-2) travel cross country to face the Baltimore Ravens (1-4) on Sunday afternoon. It will be the first game for the Rams since Oct. 2, when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in a Thursday night contest.
“I use (the mini bye weeks) as best I can,” Stafford said. “I make sure that when I’m at the soccer games for my girls, I’m sitting down and not up too much, trying to save my legs. If we’re painting pumpkins, I’m trying to make sure my hands don’t get too dirty.”
The veteran got the laugh he was seeking.
“No, I mean, I rest as much as I can. … But I do appreciate them, especially as I get older and longer in my career. It’s important to try to use those times whenever you can to try to feel as good as you possibly can.”
Stafford has played about as well as he can through the Rams’ first five games. He has posted a career-high 107.3 passer rating while completing 66.7 percent of his passes for a league-high 1,503 yards plus 11 touchdowns and two interceptions.
The mood is much different in Baltimore, where the status of Lamar Jackson is up in the air after the star quarterback remained out for the start of the week because of a hamstring injury. Jackson sat out last week as the Ravens lost 44-10 at home against the Houston Texans.
It marked the third straight loss for Baltimore, which entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations and now must battle back for the rest of the year just to try to make the playoffs.
Ravens wideout Rashod Bateman and his teammates will try to put on a better show for the home crowd after receiving a shower of boos in blowout loss to Houston.
“The fans got every right to feel how they feel,” Bateman said. “They expect excellence. It’s our job to deliver that. We are not upholding the standard right now, so we deserve all the criticism.”
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of his players, “They’re completely motivated to get the win this week, but the main thing you have to focus on is how to do it. You have to go play a certain way, getting prepared to do that and to play the way we can play given whatever circumstances we have.”
If Jackson cannot return, Cooper Rush likely would make his second consecutive start for Baltimore. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 179 yards last week, but he threw three interceptions.
Meanwhile, running back Derrick Henry will look for a better performance after rushing 15 times for 33 yards and a touchdown a week ago. Henry has 317 rushing yards and four TDs on the season, but hasn’t gained more than 50 yards on the ground since Week 1.
The Rams’ top playmakers include wideouts Puka Nacua (588 receiving yards, 2 TDs) and Davante Adams (357 receiving yards, 3 TDs). Kyren Williams has provided a burst out of the backfield with 368 rushing yards and four total scores.
The Ravens are 6-3 all time against the Rams, and they have won four of the five matchups in Baltimore.

DAK PRESCOTT, COWBOYS LEAN ON OFFENSIVE SUCCESS WITH PANTHERS ON TAP
A couple of strong games for the Dallas offense without star wideout Ceedee Lamb is giving fans the sense that the Cowboys are getting it together.
They’ll have another chance to show that in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers when the teams meet Sunday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.
The Cowboys (2-2-1), fresh off a 37-22 road victory against the New York Jets, have demonstrated the ability to click in coach Brian Schottenheimer’s offense.
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott is second in passing yards (1,356) and tied for third in touchdown passes (10), with just three interceptions. George Pickens has averaged 15.5 yards per catch for the Cowboys.
“Dak is doing an incredible job of reading progressions,” Schottenheimer said. “And the first open guy is going to get the ball and I think that’s what you’re seeing.”
That’s evident with four different players finishing as the top receiver for Dallas across the last four games. Ryan Flournoy racked up 114 receiving yards last week.
With a perfect record at home, the Panthers (2-3) aim to continue riding the momentum that developed during last week’s comeback victory against the Miami Dolphins.
Carolina still needs to improve its slow starts. Other than a shutout of the Atlanta Falcons, the Panthers have endured miserable first halves this season.
Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, who was the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 206 yards on the ground against Miami, could move back to a second-string role if Chuba Hubbard returns from a one-game injury absence.
Coach Dave Canales said the staff will make the situation work out, though he didn’t commit to rotating running backs or sticking with one primary ball carrier.
“It’s a great feeling for me,” Canales said. “I look down at the call sheet, I don’t have to worry about who’s in there. It allows us to continue to play our brand of football.”
Dowdle is in his first season with the Panthers after four campaigns with the Cowboys.
“There are going to be emotions, but we have to set those things aside,” Canales said of the connection between Dowdle and this week’s opponent.
It might be more important for the Panthers to crank up their passing attack. Dallas ranks last in passing defense, allowing 284.6 yards per game through the air.
The Cowboys have a sturdy offense on the ground with Javonte Williams posting 89.4 rushing yards per game. He gained a season-high 135 yards against the Jets.
Schottenheimer said there’s a physical element to the offense that’s paying off.
Carolina’s defense has been working on altering rushing stunts and finding new avenues into the offensive backfields.
“That’s a group that needs to continue to grow to make an impact with a pass rush,” Canales said.
Schottenheimer said there are encouraging developments regarding some injured Cowboys, but he’s not certain those will equate to players being ready to face the Panthers. Offensive tackle Tyler Guyton returned to the practice field Wednesday after finishing up concussion protocol.
Sunday’s game will be the fourth road contest for Dallas. The Cowboys are 12-5 all-time against Carolina, and have won seven of 10 all-time visits to Charlotte.

SCORCHING HOT COLTS SET SIGHTS ON POTENTIAL KYLER MURRAY-LESS CARDINALS
When the Arizona Cardinals visit the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, it might be considered a tale of two quarterbacks.
Daniel Jones is thriving in his new home and Kyler Murray might not be able to answer the bell, which could make Indianapolis (4-1) an even bigger favorite than the 7 1/2-point spread reflected at mid-week.
Jones is coming off another efficient effort last week in a 40-6 rout of Las Vegas, completing 20 of 29 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Through five games, Jones’ completion percentage (71.3) and QB rating (105.1) are career highs.
It’s quite a turnaround for the 28-year old Jones, who flamed out last year with the New York Giants and wound up 2024 as a backup to Sam Darnold in Minnesota. Jones admits that New York’s constant losing ways took a toll on him.
“I don’t know if I could say I ever hated the game,” he said. “But those drives back from the stadium after a loss, stuck in traffic, make you think about a lot of things. The end in New York was tough and you go through a lot.”
Jones has led the Colts to 163 points in the first five games. Only the 2007 Colts, with stars like Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, have scored more points (164) in the first five games of a season in Indianapolis history.
The team did get bad news last week as Spencer Shrader suffered a torn ACL and MCL while being roughed after kicking an extra point. Michael Badgley, who hasn’t kicked since last July after tearing a hamstring, won a tryout Tuesday to earn the job.
“I always knew I was going to get back so I just kept a positive mindset,” Badgley said.
Meanwhile, Arizona (2-3) faces the possibility of being without Murray. He injured his foot in the third quarter of last week’s 22-21 upset loss at home against Tennessee and was able to finish the game.
But Murray missed practice Wednesday, leaving backup Jacoby Brissett to handle the reps. Coach Jonathan Gannon said that if Murray was healthy enough to play, he would play. If not, the Cardinals will try to snap their three-game skid with Brissett at the controls.
“He’s a true pro,” Gannon said of Brissett. “I know that term gets thrown around but when you’re in his seat, the quarterback position is the hardest in sports and to know that you’re one play away from your role changing, you really do got to be on the details like you’re the starter.”
If Brissett has to play, he at least brings extensive experience to the huddle. The 10-year veteran has started 53 games, 30 of them with Indianapolis in four seasons. He went 11-19 as a Colts starter, throwing for 31 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
Murray’s status is one of many stories around Arizona. Gannon was fined $100,000 by the franchise for punching running back Emari Demercado after he dropped the ball just outside the goal line, turning a 72-yard touchdown run into a touchback that started Tennessee’s comeback from a 21-6 deficit. Gannon apologized to Demercado and the team for the incident.
Cardinals defensive lineman Darius Robinson (pectoral), who didn’t play last week, didn’t practice Wednesday. Seven starters were listed on their initial injury report.
The Colts meanwhile had six players on their initial injury report, with three not practicing at all. Among them was starter Kenny Moore II, who sat out with an Achilles injury.

JAGUARS, TREVOR LAWRENCE HOPE TO STAY HOT HOSTING SEAHAWKS
Five games into the 2025 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have matched last year’s win total.
After finishing 4-13 a season ago and firing head coach Doug Pederson, Jacksonville improved to 4-1 in Liam Coen’s debut season with Monday’s dramatic 31-28 win over Kansas City. It’s the franchise’s best start since a 4-1 start in 2007.
They’ll look to keep things rolling this week on a short turnaround when they host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
“It doesn’t worry me,” Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said when asked if he’s concerned about this team handling success. “Obviously it’s something that we do have to handle the right way. We’ve got to know that we haven’t done anything.
“The only thing we’re guaranteed is that we’re going to win four games this year, which isn’t enough.”
Seattle (3-2) is coming off the other side of a heartbreaker, losing 38-35 on Sunday to Tampa Bay. The Seahawks led late and appeared poised to be the team with a chance to win in regulation before a Sam Darnold pass deflected off a defensive lineman’s helmet and was intercepted, setting up a game-winning field goal for the Buccaneers.
“At the end of the day, I’ve got to protect the football in that situation. Can’t give them a short field to put the game away like that,” Darnold said postgame.
It was a tough end to what was an exceptional game for Darnold, who threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Through five games as a Seahawk, Darnold ranks seventh in the NFL in passing yards (1,246) and is tied for seventh with seven passing TDs.
It has taken Darnold little time to build chemistry with leading receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, whose 534 receiving yards this season rank second in the league.
Jacksonville’s passing defense ranks 27th in the league, allowing 250.4 yards per game. However, the Jaguars also have a league-leading 10 interceptions.
Linebacker Devin Lloyd made history Monday when he returned an interception a franchise-record 99 yards for a touchdown. It was his league-leading fourth interception, giving him as many picks as he had in his first three seasons combined.
While Jacksonville’s run game has set the tone for the offense this season, ranking fifth in rushing yards per game (137.0), Lawrence and the passing game may be tasked with a larger burden facing a Seattle defense that ranks third against the run (83.0).
“Nobody is running the ball on those guys, really,” Coen said. “Their front is so deep. They’ve got eight guys up front who have played high-level football in the NFL.”
The QB was the hero against Kansas City, running in a touchdown after tripping on an offensive lineman’s feet with 23 seconds left for the game-winning score.
It was a happy ending to an erratic game for Lawrence, who fumbled on the goal line and was intercepted, giving him six turnovers (five picks, one fumble) in five games this season. Only four quarterbacks have turned the ball over more.
Jacksonville will be without a primary receiving weapon Sunday. Tight end Brenton Strange (hip) went on injured reserve this week and will miss at least the next four games. He’s second on the team with 204 receiving yards.
Running back Bhayshul Tuten (shoulder), receiver Dyami Brown (shoulder) and defensive end Travon Walker (wrist) were all limited during Wednesday’s practice.
Seattle’s defense enters the week down four starters. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon (knee), linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence (quad) and safety Julian Love (hamstring) missed last week’s game while linebacker Derick Hall left Sunday’s game with an oblique injury.
All four did not practice on Wednesday, and Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said decisions on their availability would likely come later in the week.

CHARGERS VISIT DOLPHINS AS BOTH SIDES SEEK REDEMPTION AFTER BLOWN LEADS
The Los Angeles Chargers have lost two in a row after a promising 3-0 start while the Miami Dolphins lost any momentum they had from a Monday Night Football win over the Jets last Sunday following a disappointing loss at Carolina.
Both sides will try to get back on track when they clash on Sunday afternoon in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The Chargers (3-2) watched a 10-0 first-quarter lead slip away in what resulted in a 27-10 loss at home against the Washington Commanders.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins (1-4) let a 17-0 first-half lead evaporate before losing 27-24 to the Panthers.
While Miami’s season appears to be fading away following its latest setback, the Chargers still have time to turn their fortunes around if they can snap their two-game skid.
Los Angeles continues to deal with injuries to key players, including starting running back Omarion Hampton, who was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury on Monday. It will keep him sidelined for at least the next four games.
Without Hampton, the Chargers will turn to running backs Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal to pick up the slack. The Chargers also signed veteran Nyheim Hines to their practice squad.
It might not matter much if Los Angeles can’t shore up an offensive line ravaged by injuries after losing tackles Rashawn Slater, who is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon, and Joe Alt (high ankle sprain), who missed the team’s Week 5 matchup.
Pass protection problems compounded the Chargers’ issues last week. Justin Herbert was sacked four times by Washington and has taken 16 sacks for the season, which is tied for third-most in the NFL.
Costly penalties negating key first downs was another issue in last week’s loss.
“We’re good enough to overcome some [mistakes], but you need to minimize them,” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “That’s an area that we need to get better at.”
The Dolphins lost Tyreek Hill two weeks ago to a season-ending knee injury, but their passing game had one of its best performances of the season against the Panthers.
Tua Tagovailoa, limited in practice Wednesday with thumb and hip issues, threw for 256 yards and three touchdown passes without an interception against the Panthers. He seemed to revive the connection with receiver Jaylen Waddle, who caught a season-high six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Darren Waller, who sat out Wednesday’s practice to rest, continued to shine in his second start of the season, catching five passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.
The Dolphins’ rushing game was virtually non-existent in Week 5 with just 19 yards on the ground.
Miami also couldn’t slow down Carolina’s ground attack, led by Rico Dowdle, who ran for a career-high 206 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that his team can’t take the Chargers’ depleted backfield or weakened offensive line lightly just because less experienced running backs will likely be handling the ball.
“Any given week, if you take any foot off the gas, any guy whether you know him or not — I’m not sure if you knew who No. 5 was last week, regardless, you have to tackle him,” McDaniel said. “That will be our focus. There’s always talented runners on each team or they wouldn’t be there. They will stress us and we will see if we’re ready for them, or they’ll introduce themselves to us in the way we don’t want.”
The Dolphins placed cornerback Cornell Armstrong (hamstring) on IR, and signed safety Jordan Colbert to their active roster and Kendall Sheffield to their practice squad.
Linebacker Tyrel Dodson (concussion) did not practice Wednesday while offensive linemen Lary Borom (thumb), Aaron Brewer (pectoral), defensive back Elijah Campbell (quad), cornerback Storm Duck (ankle) and receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. (knee) were limited.
For the Chargers, receiver Keenan Allen took a veteran rest day while Alt (ankle), receiver Derius Davis (knee), linebacker Bud Dupree (hamstring), defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand (groin), guard Trey Pipkins III (knee) and defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor (illness) did not practice. Guard Mekhi Becton (hand), receiver Quentin Johnston (hamstring), linebacker Denzel Perryman (ankle) and offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer (knee) were limited.

PATRIOTS, SAINTS HOPE TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS IN INTERCONFERENCE TILT
The New England Patriots need just one more win to match their total for all of last season.
The New Orleans Saints are coming off their first win of the season.
Two teams feeling better about themselves, featuring first-year head coaches and second-year quarterbacks, will try to build momentum when they meet Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.
The Patriots (3-2) had one of the most surprising victories of the young season when they went into Buffalo and beat the previously undefeated Bills 23-20 on Sunday night. It was the second consecutive victory for head coach Mike Vrabel, whose team is 2-0 on the road.
“What you did one week certainly doesn’t guarantee what you’re going to do the next week, positively or negatively,” Vrabel said. ” … We have a job to do. It’s the same every week. We’ve been disappointed when we’ve lost and we’ve been happy when we’ve won. I think we’ve responded well (to both).”
Drake Maye has the sixth-highest passer rating among starting quarterbacks (107.8), even though he hasn’t had a consistently productive running game to work with. New England is 27th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (95.2) and 28th in yards per carry (3.7).
“It’s got to be better,” Vrabel said. “It has to be better at the line of scrimmage, at the second level and then continue to try to finish and break some of those. We’ve had some good runs, it’s just not enough of them. Not enough double-digit runs that help your average.”
The Saints (1-4) scored the final 23 points to defeat the visiting New York Giants 26-14 last Sunday, handing first-year coach Kellen Moore his first win as an NFL head coach.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler got his first victory in 11 NFL starts. His passer rating (90.4) places him in the middle of the pack among starting QBs, but his 7.3 yards per attempt against the Giants was significantly higher than his 5.2 entering the game.
“Spencer has done a really good job of avoiding negative plays,” Moore said. “As a young quarterback there are plenty of growth opportunities for him, but he’s putting us in position to compete. He’s protecting the football and he’s keeping the team moving. Those are really positive things for a quarterback.”
New Orleans is ranked 29th in the NFL in touchdowns scored in the red zone, doing so on just 41.2 percent of its trips.
“I’ve got to do a better job there,” said Moore, who is the team’s offensive play caller. “A lot of it is we have put ourselves in unfavorable third downs. You can look at the numbers and they’re not good on third-and-10 from the 10. We’ve got to do a better job on first and second down.”
Rattler agreed that the red-zone production has been “iffy,” but added, “the running game is getting better and we’re getting more wide receivers and tight ends involved in the passing game.”
Only one Saint — starting cornerback Isaac Yiadom (hamstring), who did not play last week — missed practice Wednesday. Starting defensive end Chase Young (calf) was limited while practicing for the first time since the start of the regular season.
One New England starter — safety Jaylinn Hawkins (hamstring) — missed practice.

STEELERS EMERGE FROM BYE REFRESHED, READY TO FACE ROOKIE-LED BROWNS
The AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers progressed toward full health during their bye week while multiple fellow contenders suffered defeats.
Pittsburgh (3-1) will aim to keep moving forward when the struggling Cleveland Browns (1-4) visit on Sunday.
All the better with the reinforcements the Steelers are hopeful to have in tow.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said this week that he expects cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (hamstring), linebacker Alex Highsmith (ankle) and running back Jaylen Warren (knee) to return against the Browns.
Tomlin added that cornerback Jalen Ramsey (hamstring) and wide receiver Calvin Austin III (shoulder) also could be in line to play.
Ostensibly, the open week afforded Pittsburgh more time to prepare for Browns standout defensive end Myles Garrett, who has four sacks through five games.
Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones, however, knows the drill in his third season facing Cleveland.
“Just coming in with the right mindset,” Jones said. “I feel that’s 90 percent of the battle. Just not getting in your own head before it’s time and just going out there and playing your game.”
Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers considers Garrett a future Hall of Famer and “one of the few players in the league over my 21 years that you game plan for.”
Still, he knows the Steelers boast their own defensive gamebreaker in linebacker T.J. Watt, who has a team-best three sacks.
“When we played the Steelers last year (with the New York Jets),” Rodgers said, “our plan was to get four hands on T.J. Watt every single play.”
Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel is set to make his second career start for the Browns, who enter Week 6 with the NFL’s fourth-worst point differential, at minus-50.
Cleveland on Tuesday traded veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, 40, and a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the division rival Cincinnati Bengals for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Flacco started the Browns’ first four games before yielding to Gabriel, a third-round selection in April.
Gabriel went 19-for-33 from 190 yards and a pair of touchdown passes in a 21-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.
“Lot to clean up,” Gabriel said. “There’s always going to be good and bad.”
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski would not say initially whether rookie Shedeur Sanders or practice squad player Bailey Zappe would serve as Gabriel’s backup against the Steelers.
“All roster type of things, I always have to be mindful of our players and our players’ development,” Stefanski said. “And I want to make sure that I’m always doing what’s best for our players and, of course, our team. But with young players, I’m always thinking about — last week, making the change to Dillon, you have to think long and hard about that, because these are young players that you are so invested in their development. So, I’ll let the decision play out (and) make a decision later.”
Sunday marks the 148th meeting between Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The Steelers lead the series 82-64-1 and enter with a four-game home winning streak against the Browns.
“We’re highly familiar with those guys, but they’re highly familiar with us,” Tomlin said. “I just think that’s the fun and excitement of divisional play — that intimacy, those relationships.”

TITANS EAGER TO NOTCH SECOND STRAIGHT WIN IN CLASH VS. RAIDERS
Fresh off recording their first win, the Tennessee Titans will try to press their luck when they head to Las Vegas for a meeting with the Raiders on Sunday.
While the Raiders (1-4) won their first game before going on a four-game losing streak, the Titans (1-4) enter the Week 6 matchup following an unlikely 22-21 road victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Tennessee stepped up late with 16 fourth-quarter points, earning its big break when Arizona’s Emari Demercado let the ball roll off his fingertips at the goal line early in the final frame, failing to complete a 72-yard touchdown run.
Instead of trailing 28-6, the Titans went on a momentum-building 80-yard touchdown drive and completed their comeback behind 193 passing yards from rookie Cam Ward in the fourth quarter.
“One fourth-quarter performance doesn’t guarantee another, but to see (Ward) go out and perform — be at your best when your best is required — that was really positive,” Titans head coach Brian Callahan said. “That’s a big moment for his development as a young player. Now, the key will be: How do we do that from the start of the game?”
Ward, the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, finished the game with a season-best 265 passing yards. His late effort set up a game-winning 29-yard field goal from Joey Slye as time expired.
Despite the scoring surge, the Titans remain tied with the Cleveland Browns for the fewest points scored this season at 73, but the comeback has given a glimpse of offensive hope moving forward.
“We still have a lot to prove to ourselves from an execution standpoint, offensively and defensively,” Ward said. “We still have to get a lot more wins.”
The Raiders had their feel-good victory in Week 1 with a 20-13 road win over the New England Patriots, but it failed to provide a spark moving forward. The most recent of Las Vegas’ four consecutive defeats came when they were overmatched 40-6 at Indianapolis this past weekend.
Geno Smith has yet to get on track in his first season with Las Vegas. His nine interceptions lead the NFL and he has been sacked 16 times. Smith does have six touchdown passes, while his 1,176 yards through the air are 11th most in the league.
“Things happen in this league. It’s the big-boy league. It’s the NFL,” Smith said in reference to his interceptions. “It’s not always going to be perfect. It’s an imperfect game. We have to find ways to win regardless of what happens.”
On defense, the Raiders give up 27.8 points per game, eighth most in the NFL, but the Titans give up the seventh most (28.2).
During Sunday’s lowest-scoring game of the season, when Las Vegas went 0-for- 4 in the red zone, the defense gave up three rushing touchdowns to Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor. Smith threw two interceptions and has five in the past two weeks.
Restricting the Las Vegas offense Sunday was the absence of the team’s top two tight ends in Brock Bowers (knee) and Michael Mayer (concussion), while left tackle Kolton Miller (ankle) remains on the injured reserve.
Bowers and Raiders punter AJ Cole (ankle) missed practice Wednesday, while Mayer was a full participant. The Titans had 10 players who did not participate Wednesday, including Slye (calf), cornerback Marcus Harris (calf), wide receiver Van Jefferson (ankle), linebacker Arden Key (quad) and defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons (ankle).

PACKERS BACK FROM BYE FOR SURPRISE SECOND SHOT AT JOE FLACCO, NEW BENGALS QB1
Returning from their bye week with only one loss this season, the Packers received an unexpected surprise from their guests arriving in Green Bay on Sunday.
Looking to unwind a string of three consecutive losses, the Cincinnati Bengals acquired quarterback Joe Flacco from the Cleveland Browns and plugged him into the starting lineup. The Packers (2-1-1) faced Flacco three weeks ago when he steered the Browns to a 13-10 victory.
“We played him a lot, watched him a lot, he brings great experience,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Wednesday, welcoming Flacco directly to the QB1 role. “His style fits our style of play. Excited to get him out there. We’ll start him this week.”
Green Bay’s defense hit the bye at the right time, dog tired after a track meet with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. Anchored by All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, the Packers dominated in opening victories over the Lions and Commanders, holding them without a touchdown until the fourth quarter in back-to-back wins to start the season. The Packers appeared to be on the way to a win at Cleveland.
The Browns were scoreless until the final four minutes and Green Bay still wound up losing on a 55-yard walk-off field goal.
In the 40-40 overtime tie against the Cowboys, the Packers allowed 436 yards, including 319 passing yards and three touchdowns to Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott.
After struggling on offense against the Browns, the Packers piled up 489 yards against Dallas, but had to salvage the tie on a 34-yard field goal on the final play of overtime.
The Packers are second in the league against the run, allowing just 77.5 yards per game, and fourth in total defense at 283.3 yards.
“I don’t think we’ve put together a complete game playing four quarters of complimentary football, which is a blessing and a curse at the same time,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday.
Jordan Love has 1,000 passing yards, completing 69.4 of his passes with eight touchdowns and one interception. Tight end Tucker Kraft has been the top target with 16 catches and two scores. Romeo Doubs has four touchdowns among his 13 receptions.
But the revolving door on the offensive line has contributed to gains being erased by growing pains.
The Packers could be bolstered by the possible return of wide receiver Christian Watson, who practiced Monday. Watson underwent surgery in January after tearing his right ACL in the regular-season finale.
But the front five remains in flux. Backup offensive tackle Anthony Belton (ankle) and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (knee) were listed as non-participants Wednesday. Listed as limited participation were left guard Aaron Banks (groin), defensive end Kingsley Enagbare (ankle), cornerback Nate Hobbs (concussion), kicker Brandon McManus (quadricep), offensive lineman Jacob Monk (hamstring), right tackle Zach Tom (oblique), left tackle Rasheed Walker (quadriceps) and wide receiver Savion Williams (groin).
Until the Packers prove they can pave a path for Josh Jacobs despite unfamiliar blockers, Green Bay might be challenged to balance the offensive attack. Jacobs is the team’s leading rusher with 266 yards and four scores, but he’s averaging 3.3 yards per carry.
The Bengals started the season 2-0, but haven’t posted a victory since Joe Burrow limped to the injured list because of a Week 2 turf toe injury. Jake Browning was given ample time to pull out of a tailspin — eight interceptions, including three in a 37-24 loss to Detroit last week — before the Bengals opted to acquire Flacco. Flacco, 40, was leading the NFL in turnovers when he was benched in favor of rookie Dillon Gabriel before the Week 5 loss to the Vikings in London.
Flacco was the Comeback Player of the Year in 2023 with the Browns. He spent last season with Indianapolis, playing in eight games, including six starts, completing 65.3 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns.
Flacco started the first four games with Cleveland this season, going 1-3 before being benched in favor of Gabriel. Flacco completed 58.1 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and six interceptions and was sacked nine times.
“The No. 1 trait that you’re looking for is a guy that can operate your system and throw the football,” Taylor said. “Joe’s always been a tremendous passer in this league.”
The Bengals completed the trade and once the league office approved it, the team was in Cleveland to drive Flacco to Cincinnati and pick up his personal vehicle so that he could get about the business of learning Taylor’s offense on fast forward. While in transit, he reviewed documentation about the offense, game plan and scheme he would be getting the keys to as the QB1 by the time the Bengals took the practice field Wednesday.
“Yesterday, felt like I said there are 24 hours in a day. I felt like there were 36 hours in yesterday,” Taylor said Wednesday of the whirlwind upramp of Flacco. “We just tried to cover all the base pieces of information. You like to knock out personnel and formations and motions and the easy stuff, and then when you get in here, get the nuts and bolts.”
Cincinnati is last in the NFL in total offense (228.6 yards per game) and rushing with a paltry 57-yard average per game. A woeful offense has made for a tired defense. The Bengals are 30th in total defense (391.2 yards per game) and 30th in scoring defense (31.2 points per game).
Defensive end Shemar Stewart (ankle) was listed as limited participation on Wednesday’s injury report, along with guard Lucas Patrick (calf) and receivers Charlie Jones (Achilles) and Ja’Marr Chase (rest). Guard Dylan Fairchild (knee) and tight end Drew Sample (ankle) did not practice.
Green Bay has won the last two regular-season matchups against the Bengals in 2017 and 2021, both in overtime.

MVP CANDIDATE BAKER MAYFIELD LEADS BUCS AGAINST INJURY-RIDDLED 49ERS
Baker Mayfield is flirting with becoming a full-fledged MVP candidate as he leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into Sunday’s contest against the visiting San Francisco 49ers.
Meanwhile, San Francisco is just trying to keep its quarterbacks healthy.
Brock Purdy (toe) is expected to sit out for the fourth time in five games and Mac Jones (knee, oblique) will again fight through injuries during a Week 6 showdown of 4-1 NFC teams.
Mayfield is coming off a dynamic performance in which he passed for a season-best 379 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-35 road victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Mayfield hears the praise but hasn’t forgotten being discarded earlier in his career. The impressive comeback story is nice, but he’s not getting caught in the chatter.
“At the core, definitely the same, but matured in different ways,” Mayfield said Wednesday. “I’m not worried about little things that don’t matter. Now if you put it in the landscape of a competitive football game — in that atmosphere — that’ll never change.”
Mayfield ranks fourth in the league with 1,283 passing yards and is tied for third with 10 touchdown passes. He has been intercepted just once in 172 attempts.
The Buccaneers’ four victories have come by a combined nine points.
Meanwhile, San Francisco is 3-0 on the road after posting a 26-23 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 2. The game ended with the 49ers stuffing a fourth-down run.
“It was a huge character win,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. ” … I’ve really enjoyed these guys since OTAs.”
Jones passed for a season-high 342 yards to go with two touchdowns. He was battered throughout the contest, aggravating a knee injury and hurting an oblique.
“I’m really impressed,” Shanahan said of Jones. “He’s played his ass off. He got banged up in the second half and fought through it … I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”
Kendrick Bourne had a career-high 142 yards while matching his career best of 10 catches against the Rams. The performance came with the 49ers missing key receivers.
Jones and Bourne have a deep familiarity after playing together for three seasons with the New England Patriots.
Tampa Bay remains without longtime standout receiver Mike Evans (hamstring), but rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka has been an immediate force.
Egbuka has 25 receptions for 445 yards and five touchdowns. He’s tied for second in the NFL in scoring receptions and ranks fourth in yardage.
Asked Wednesday why he has clicked so well with Egbuka, Mayfield put it in the simplest terms.
“He’s just pretty damn good,” Mayfield said. “That’s just about it.”
Mayfield connected with Egbuka on all seven targets against Seattle. Egbuka finished with 163 yards and a touchdown.
“I don’t enter any seasons of my life with too many expectations when it comes to statistics or anything really,” said Egbuka, the former Ohio State star who was selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Evans was one of five Tampa Bay players to miss Wednesday’s walkthrough. He will sit out for the third straight game.
Also missing the walkthrough were receiver Chris Godwin (fibula), running back Bucky Irving (foot/shoulder) and cornerbacks Zyon McCollum (thumb) and Benjamin Morrison (hamstring).
Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said McCollum underwent a thumb procedure and his status would be determined late in the week.
Purdy was one of seven 49ers slated to miss Wednesday’s practice due to injuries. Also sitting out due to injury were receivers Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib), Ricky Pearsall (knee), Jordan Watkins (calf), defensive ends Robert Beal Jr. (ankle), Yetur Gross-Matos (knee/hamstring) and defensive tackle Alfred Collins (knee). Jones was limited.
San Francisco has won the past four meetings, including a 23-20 road victory last November.

BEARS CB TYRIQUE STEVENSON SEEKS REDEMPTION VS. COMMANDERS
Tyrique Stevenson returns this week to the scene of his worst moment as an NFL player, and he is working hard to get over that incident.
The Chicago Bears cornerback took the brunt of the criticism after he and his teammates allowed Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels to complete a 52-yard Hail Mary as time expired to steal an 18-15 victory last Oct. 27.
When the play began, Stevenson had his back to the action, taunting the fans. He subsequently got involved in the action and accidentally tipped the ball to receiver Noah Brown, who made the winning catch.
The Bears return to Washington to play the Commanders on Monday night.
“Going back to a hostile environment, they’re going to do their best job to rattle me as much as they can,” Stevenson said. “The best thing I can do is come out here and show (my teammates) I’m locked in and ready to go.”
Stevenson credited the other Chicago players with helping him most past the blunder.
“They gave me support,” Stevenson recalled on Wednesday. “Being honest, I got a couple side-eyes. But … this is what we do for a living. This is who we are in some cases. And the best thing we can do is go out there and make great plays.
“I put a bad play on film. The best thing they could do was come around and put their arm around me and be like, ‘We got you.’ That’s what they showed me all last year.”
The play, which came to be dubbed the “Fail Mary,” helped sink the Bears’ season. Chicago was 4-2 entering that game, but the defeat was the first of 10 in a row for the Bears. They won their finale to finish 5-12.
Fan anger over the slump focused on Stevenson.
“It was harsh, it hurt my feelings,” Stevenson said. “That’s the best way I can explain it. It just hurt my feelings being a football player and having one of those mistakes that’s going to linger around. Even when my son grows up, I’ve gotta explain that to him. It definitely hurt.
“But just use it as fuel.”
Chicago is 2-2 this year, having won its past two games. Stevenson has a team-high five passes defensed to go with one interception and 19 tackles.

INDIANA FOOTBALL
WEST COAST WIN
EUGENE, Ore. – It was a day to believe, and Indiana did.
It was a day to overcome and the No. 7/7 Hoosiers did.
It was a day to celebrate, and you’d better believe IU did after Saturday’s 30-20 win over No. 3/2 Oregon at sold-out Autzen Stadium.
“We really believed it could happen,” head coach Curt Cignetti told Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer in the post-game radio show. “I had a special feeling about it. At my other (coaching) places we had big road wins. This was the same feeling.”
IU (6-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big Ten) entered the game 0-46 on the road against top-5 teams. It is now 1-46.
“This shows that Indiana is a real football team,” quarterback Fernando Mendoza said.
The Hoosiers broke the Ducks’ will as well as their winning mystique, snapping Oregon’s 23-game, regular-season winning streak and 18-game home winning streak, and they did it in double-digit fashion by scoring the game’s final 10 points.
“We never said it would be easy,” Mendoza said during a post-game CBS interview. “We came in here, overcame adversity fantastically and rose to the moment.
“When the offense was on the field and we needed a game-winning drive, we did it. When the defense was on the field and we needed a stop, we got it.”
Indiana, which shares the Big Ten lead with No. 1 Ohio State, won without perfection. The offensive line had five pre-snap penalties. Mendoza threw a fourth-quarter pick six. A blown coverage allowed a long Oregon touchdown pass.
It all could have rattled a less focused team. For these Hoosiers, rich with veteran leadership and resilience, it elevated their performance.
“We know we put in a lot of work,” receiver Omar Cooper Jr. told Fischer. “We know we’re capable of doing things like this. We had to trust in that and trust our coaches.”
Trust held firm despite an early 7-3 deficit and ties of 10-10, 13-13 and, in the fourth quarter, 20-20.
“I liked our mindset going in,” Cignetti told Fischer. “We were prepared to handle adversity. We handled it well and made the plays we had to make.
“Our guys wanted it. It showed on the field they wanted it. They did the things they needed to do to be successful.
“It wasn’t perfect, but it was a great win.”
The Hoosiers made plays. Boy, did they make plays. For instance …
Mendoza finished 20-for-31 for 211 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Wide receiver Elijah Sarratt had eight catches for 121 yards and that game-winning catch.
Kicker Brendan Franke’s 58-yard field goal tied Griffin Oakes, who had a 58-yard against Maryland in 2014, for the program record. It also set the Autzen Stadium record and was the longest field goal in a road or neutral site game by a Hoosier.
Running back Roman Hemby ran 19 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns. He added two catches for 25 yards.
Cooper Jr. made a one-hand acrobatic first-half catch, then fighting for extra yards afterward. He wound up with seven catches for 58 yards.
Linebacker Isaiah Jones powered through for eight tackles, one sack, and one interception.
Linebacker Aiden Fisher made plays all over the field. He finished with 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Fellow linebacker Rolijah Hardy also had 13 tackles.
Oregon (6-1, 2-1) began the game having allowed one sack all season. IU had three by halftime and finished with six. It also intercepted heralded quarterback Dante Moore twice. He entered the game with one.
Cignetti had the words “attack, attack, attack” written on the back of his left hand, and the Hoosiers did, reducing one of the nation’s best offenses to rubble while having success against one of the nation’s top defenses.
The Hoosiers held a team that averaged 46.6 points to just 13 offensive points. They scored 30 on a defense that allowed 12.2.
“Our defense held a really good offense and a really good quarterback when we needed them to,” Cooper Jr. told Fischer. “They put the team on their backs a few times. We were able to capitalize because of what they did. I’m proud of the things they do.”
Cignetti is 17-2 at IU. His success comes from emphasizing having indomitable will, one that cannot be defeated or subdued. It’s about being resilient, never letting doubt creep in and believing that if the Hoosiers keep chipping away, good things will happen.
“We have a lot of veterans who understand the game and they buy in because their good, high-character kids,” Cignetti said. “They’re trying to play like we want them to play.”
IU’s defense opened with a sack by defensive linemen Kellan Wyatt and Mario Landino, then a fourth-down stop to give the Hoosiers the ball at midfield. A 24-yard pass from Mendoza to Sarratt set up Nico Radicic’s 42-yard field goal and a 3-0 Hoosier lead.
Oregon took a 7-3 lead later in the first quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass. IU responded with a 75-yard dive highlighted by Mendoza’s 14-yard quarterback draw and capped by Hemby’s 3-yard touchdown run. The Hoosiers ended the first quarter ahead 10-7.
Oregon added one second-quarter field goal, but missed a second. IU capitalized by going 40 yards in three plays to set up Franke’s program-record-tying 58-yard field goal for a 13-10 halftime lead.
The Ducks tied it with a 33-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. IU responded with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Hemby finished it off with a 2-yard run for a 20-13 Hoosier lead.
Oregon’s pick-six tied it at 20-20 with 12:42 left in the game.
Mendoza’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Sarratt made it 27-20. Then IU defensive lineman Stephen Daley tipped a Moore pass, which was intercepted by defensive back Louis Moore at the Oregon 32-yard line to set up Radicic’s clinching field goal.
Next comes Saturday’s Homecoming game against Michigan State (3-3, 0-3) at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium and more Cignetti perspective.
“It’s a great win, but it depends on what we do with it from here.”

PURDUE FOOTBALL
PURDUE COMES UP SHORT AT MINNESOTA
MINNEAPOLIS — Purdue Football dropped a hard-fought 27-20 decision at Minnesota on Saturday night.
The Boilermakers (2-4, 0-3 B1G) outgained the Golden Gophers (4-2, 2-1 B1G) 456 yards to 262, but Minnesota took advantage of three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown late in the fourth.
Trailing 27-20 with 7:40 left in the game, sophomore quarterback Ryan Browne led a 15-play, 68-yard drive down to the Gophers’ 7-yard line. But Minnesota stood strong on fourth-and-goal to almost seal the win.
With one timeout remaining, Purdue made a stop on the ensuing drive and got the ball back with 15 seconds left. The Boilers’ attempt at a hook-and-lateral came up short in the end.
Senior running back Devin Mockobee churned out 98 yards on 21 carries (4.7 average) in his latest dominant performance against the Gophers. In three games against Minnesota, Mockobee rushed for 363 yards and two scores.
Mockobee paced Purdue on the ground, moving up to fourth on the school rushing chart (2,868 career yards).
In all, Purdue averaged 6.3 yards per carry with 253 yards on 40 attempts. Browne (eight carries, 61 yards, one touchdown) and fellow quarterback Malachi Singleton (five carries, 73 yards, one touchdown) combined for the most rushing yards by Purdue quarterbacks in a game since at least 1995. With Mockobee, they became the first trio to have 60-plus rushing yards in a game for Purdue since Raheem Mostert, Akeem Hunt and Austin Appleby did it against Minnesota in 2014.
On the game’s opening drive, Purdue marched to the Minnesota 40-yard line and faced a fourth-and-2. Head coach Barry Odom kept the offense on the field, and Singleton took the snap out of an empty backfield, bursting up the middle for a 40-yard touchdown — the longest run by a Purdue quarterback since David Blough vs. Nebraska in 2015.
Browne completed 21-of-40 passes for 203 yards, connecting with nine different receivers. Corey Smith led the receiving corps with 57 yards on a career-high six catches.
On the defensive side, Alex Sanford Jr. had a career day with seven tackles (one for a loss), tying for the team lead alongside Mani Powell and Tahj Ra-El. The Boilers held Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey to a career-low completion percentage of 47% (21-of-45, 232 yards, two touchdowns, one interception).
Purdue recorded 12 pass breakups, its most in a game in more than 15 years. The defense also held Minnesota to 30 rushing yards on 18 carries (1.7 avg), marking the sixth game since 2000 that Purdue allowed 30 yards or fewer on the ground and just the third against Big Ten competition.
Ian Jeffries and CJ Nunnally IV each had a sack, their first and fourth of the season, respectively. Nunnally IV finished the night with a pair of tackles-for-loss.
UP NEXT
The Boilers go back on the road for a tilt at Northwestern next Saturday. Kickoff in Evanston, Ill., is set for 3 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL
IRISH PULL AWAY FROM NC STATE, 36-7
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame football team (4-2) won its fourth consecutive game 36-7 over NC State (4-3) on the strength of a dominating offensive and defensive performance in the second half. The Irish led 10-7 at the halftime break, then scored 19 unanswered points while intercepting three Wolfpack passes and recording a safety in the game’s final 30 minutes.
CJ Carr threw for a career-high 342 yards in the game while adding touchdown strikes to Will Pauling and KK Smith. Pauling finished with 105 yards receiving in the contest while tight end Eli Raridon recorded his first 100-yard receiving contest of his career with seven catches for 109 yards.
Boubacar Traore keyed the defensive effort for Notre Dame with two of the team’s four sacks. Safety Tae Johnson and linebacker Drayk Bown led the team in tackles, both recording seven in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish forced the Wolfpack into a quick three-and-out to start the game after kicking off. Boubacar Traore sacked the quarterback on second down to put NC State far behind the sticks after he was driven out of the pocket by a blitzing Drayk Bowen.
After the punt on the first play of the drive, CJ Carr faked to Jeremiyah Love and found a wide open Will Pauling 32 yards down field to the NC State 26. Two plays later Carr and Pauling hooked up again for 19 yards to the five-yard line.
Love then powered ahead on three straight runs, eventually scoring from two yards out.
NC State’s second possession was a quick three-and-out again that featured two short runs and a bounced pass on third down.
Back in possession of the ball Notre Dame drove into scoring position again with the key play yet another Carr to Pauling pass for 42 yards. The offense stalled in the red zone, however, and on fourth-and-short Carr rolled out to his right and could not find an open receiver, running out of bounds for a sack.
NC State tied the game on its next drive, first just scratching out three first downs before hitting the Irish with a big play. On third and 15, the Wolfpack got 15 yards for their initial first down of the game. Later in the drive on third-and-10 NC State got nine yards on a pass then barely pushed quarterback CJ Bailey across for the first down on fourth-and-one.
Notre Dame forced yet another third down two plays later and NC State barely converted yet again on a solid catch at the first down marker on the sidelines. The next play, Bailey found wide receiver Terrell Anderson behind the defense for a quick strike 45-yard touchdown pass.
A penalty doomed Notre Dame’s next drive. Jadarian Price started the possession with a 20-yard run and it looked like the Irish had another long play to Malachi Fields but Price was whistled for a ticky-tack holding call in pass protection. A Price 10-yard run followed by two incomplete passes led to Notre Dame’s first punt of the game.
The visitors looked to have another drive working, but a holding penalty of their own pushed them back to third and 11. They split out their running back for a one-on-one go route against Bowen, but the Irish linebacker stayed with his assignment, the pass was overthrown and Notre Dame got the ball back after a punt.
The Irish could not move the ball, however, and punted it right back to NC State after three plays. The Wolfpack were also stuck in neutral. Elijah Hughes sacked the quarterback on second down, then Jalen Stroman executed a perfect delayed blitz for another sack to force a punt.
The pattern of the first half for the Irish offense continued as they moved the ball easily – until the red zone. Carr hooked up with Eli Raridon on back-to-back passes for 23 and 30 yards all the way down to the 15-yard line. Price moved the ball to the seven for third-and-two, but was stuffed on the run for another fourth down play in the red zone.
After the two-minute timeout, Notre Dame went for the touchdown but no one was open and Carr had to try to force a throw into the end zone that was intercepted. A penalty flag on the play was picked up after the officials discussed the play, which would kickstart two minutes of very interesting officiating.
NC State took over with the ball and after Notre Dame forced them into a third and long, the Wolfpack seemed to convert on a third-down play. The diving catch on the sidelines, initially called a catch, was reviewed by replay. It appeared there was video evidence of the ball hitting the ground, but the play was upheld.
Two plays later, Christian Gray made a diving interception to give Notre Dame the ball at midfield. The catch looked clean but the official ran in and called it incomplete. Contrary to the previous play where there was video evidence of the ball touching the turf, on this play there was none. The play call was upheld, however and NC State continued their drive.
Undeterred, the Irish defense forced a punt with 23 seconds remaining and Jordan Faison made points a possibility on the final drive with a 30-yard punt return.
Carr looked to Faison on the first play and he was tackled by the defense for pass interference. Fields then made a catch over the middle for 20 yards and Notre Dame spiked the ball at the NC State 35-yard line.
Without timeouts, Carr quickly connected with Raridon on two passes for a total of five yards to inch closer to the end zone. Noah Burnette then came out with five seconds remaining and cleared the cross bar with a 48-yard field goal to give the Irish a 10-7 lead at the halftime break.
Notre Dame received the second half kickoff but a short run and two incomplete passes led to another punt. NC State matched with a punt of its own, helped along by a pass break up by Christian Gray on third down.
The Irish scored on their next possession in an unusual way. Taking over at their own 10, Notre Dame faced third-and-12 before a false start forced them to a third-and-17. Faison caught a pass over the middle, made a defender miss but came up two yards short of the first down.
Notre Dame came out in punt formation and shifted into a different formation with Tyler Buchner taking a direct snap. The Irish had tried to run this play earlier in the game but NC State called a timeout. This time, Buchner powered forward for three yards and a first down.
Carr then found KK Smith for 12 yards and another first down. The next play Carr moved out of the pocket and threw to Raridon down field who was tackled before the ball arrived for an obvious pass interference call. The ball was now at the NC State 34-yard line, the Irish looked to Price on four straight rushes for 16 yards. Carr dropped back and found Smith on the post route wide open for an 18-yard touchdown – the junior wide receiver’s first touchdown of his career.
NC State’s next possession was almost single-handedly stopped by senior defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka. The Wolfpack tried a throw back to the quarterback that Tuihalamaka read perfectly and tackled Bailey for a loss of four yards.
On the second down play, Tuihalamaka beat his offensive lineman and forced Bailey out of the pocket and drew a holding call. Notre Dame declined the penalty since the ball was incomplete and on 3rd-and-14 Adon Shuler tracked down a scrambling Bailey short of the first down to force a punt.
Momentum fully in hand the Irish took little time to go up by 17 points. Love broke loose for a 24-yard run to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in his career and become the fastest Irish running back to reach that milestone since Josh Adams reached it with 313 carries. Love ended up at 329 carries to reach 2,000 yards.
Carr followed up with a bullet of a pass on an out-route to Smith for 31 yards. Love then burst up the middle for 13 yards to set up a 12-yard scoring strike from Carr to Pauling from 12 yards out.
Notre Dame’s defense sensed blood in the water and started to pressure the quarterback and force turnovers. Traore marched the left tackle back into the quarterback for his second sack of the game. On third and long, Bowen scored a huge clean hit on a receiver over the middle to bring up 4th-and-11. More pressure on the quarterback forced an errant throw picked off by Adon Shuler and returned 44 yards to the NC State 17.
Notre Dame’s offense could not move the ball from there, however, and Burnette came on to kick his second field goal of the game from 34 yards away and the Irish led 27-7.
The defensive pressure continued on the next Wolfpack possession. Pursued by the entire Notre Dame defensive line Bailey uncorked another bad pass, this time intercepted by Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa at the 34-yard line and he returned it to the 19.
Notre Dame’s red zone frustrations continued as Price fumbled the ball at the two-yard line. While the fumble was costly, it did pin NC State deep in its own territory and set up a safety. Bailey fumbled the snap and recovered it in the end zone to give Notre Dame two more points and a 29-7 lead.
The Irish were not done scoring after the safety kickoff. Two passes to Faison put the Irish across the 50-yard line, then Carr found Raridon on a flag pattern for 36 yards at the NC State four-yard line. Love powered in one play later for his second touchdown of the game.
The Wolfpack would try to add points on their final drive of the game but the Irish defense held yet again. Karson Hobbs picked off a desperation pass in the red zone and Notre Dame shifted to victory formation to seal the 36-7 victory.

SYCAMORES UNABLE TO COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST NO. 23 SOUTH DAKOTA
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State fought their way back against No. 23/RV South Dakota on Saturday afternoon in the Sycamores’ annual Homecoming Game, but the Coyotes were able to run out the clock in securing the 19-14 win at Memorial Stadium.
The Sycamores (2-4, 0-2) pulled back within one score with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter as running back Nick Osho secured a one-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brock Riddle pulling Indiana State back within one touchdown. The scoring drive was aided by a 21-yard completion from Riddle to Keshon Singleton that put the Sycamores inside the 10-yard line, while Deion Brown added a 13-yard carry on his first touch of the game.
The Indiana State defense forced a three-and-out on the following South Dakota (4-3, 2-1) drive with Mason Knipp making the key stop on 3rd-and-4 at the Yotes’ 31 with a tackle-for-loss forcing a punt and giving the Sycamores the chance for the go-ahead drive.
The Sycamores last chance started near midfield following a short USD punt with Brown taking the first carry up the middle moving the ball to the INS 48. After back-to-back passes to Torey French set up a 4th-and-long, the Yotes’ defense held strong with Nate Ewell breaking up the first-down pass intended for Osho and allowing South Dakota to run out the clock.
The Yotes dominated the possession battle on the game holding onto the ball for 45:21 in the game, compared to the Sycamores’ 14:39. South Dakota utilized four Will Leyland field goals (32, 26, 23, 42) to end scoring drives of 9:36, 3:04, 6:42, and 6:11, while their 10-play, 57-yard second quarter scoring drive was capped by L.J. Phillips Jr.’s one-yard touchdown run as the Yotes kept control of the game offensively.
South Dakota overall ran 77 offensive plays for 376 yards on the game, including utilizing NCAA FCS-leading rusher Phillips Jr. posting 34 carries for 187 yards and a touchdown. The Yotes’ offensive line also entered allowing an average of 2.83 tackles for loss per game allowing just 17 on the season. Indiana State nearly matched that total on Saturday with 11.0 TFLs, led by Lucas McAllister’s career-high 3.0 in the game.
The 45:21-14:39 time of possession disparity in favor of South Dakota marked the largest margin between the Sycamores and another team in the category.
One game after Brock Riddle recorded his first collegiate rushing touchdown, he added the first two passing touchdowns of his collegiate career, becoming the third Indiana State quarterback in the 2025 season with multiple touchdowns on the season.
Nick Osho’s receiving touchdown marked his first catch for a score this season and gives him a team-high seven touchdowns in the 2025 season to lead the Sycamores in the scoring category. He has scored at least one touchdown in five of the six games in the 2025 season.
Lucas McAllister’s 12-tackle game marked his first double-digit tackling effort of the 2025 season and Indiana State’s sixth in the category on the year.

VALPO FOOTBALL
FOOTBALL FALLS TO DAYTON
The Valparaiso University football team returned to Brown Field for the first time in over a month on Saturday, falling 41-10 to Dayton in the first home Pioneer Football League contest of 2025. The Beacons outscored the Flyers 10-0 in the second half.
How It Happened
Dayton scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter including a pick six. Valpo moved the ball on its first drive of the day, including a 10-yard catch by Michal Rumoro (Genova, Ill. / Genova Community) who made his first career start at running back, but turned it over on downs on a fourth-and-5 at the Dayton 40.
The Beacons had another solid drive late in the first quarter including a 16-yard pass to Jay Melchiori (Marengo, Ohio / Highland [Marietta]), but that drive ended with a missed field goal.
The Flyers added 27 second-quarter points, although Valpo special teams came up with a blocked kick with Alex Goworowski (Chicago, Ill. / Saint Patrick) and Matt Molnar (Avon Lake, Ohio / Saint Edward) both right there turning away a PAT try. The Beacons punted four times and lost a fumble in the second stanza.
Valpo had two turnovers and two punts on its third-quarter drives, but the defense did good work in that period. The first Dayton drive of the second half was a three-and-out, and the second was a four-and-out featuring a big stop by Dre Wilborn (Chicago, Ill. / Westinghouse [Georgetown]) on fourth-and-1 at the Valpo 32. The third Dayton drive of the third quarter was another three-and-out.
The Beacons forced their second turnover on downs of the second half when O.C. Nurse (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park [Marietta]) had a pass breakup on fourth-and-2 from the Valpo 16 early in the third quarter.
The hosts found paydirt for the first time in the game when Brayden Welch (Oregon City, Oregon / Oregon City) caught a 25-yard pass from Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) for a touchdown to make it 41-7 with 9:24 left in the third quarter. That finished off a six-play, 84-yard drive that saw Dayton commit several penalties on a day where otherwise flags were few and far between against either team.
Valpo forced another punt, then added to the point total on Luke Scoma’s 27-yard field goal with 5:50 remaining, finishing off an 82-yard drive highlighted by a 62-yard connection between Keefe and Amir Simmons (Baltimore, Md. / Gahanna Lincoln). That field goal occurred in the closing seconds of the game.
Inside the Game
Redshirt freshman linebacker Anthony Feltrinelli (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) notched nine tackles to share the team lead, lifting his season total to a team-high 44 tackles. This marked his second-highest total of the season and the third time in six games that he’s had at least eight.
Redshirt sophomore Nic Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) tied for the team lead with nine tackles. He is up to 43 for the season, second on the team, 21 of which have come in the last two games. He has five stops or more in five straight contests and at least eight on three occasions this season. He is two tackles away from reaching 100 for his career.
Goworowski recorded seven tackles, marking a career high.
Valpo played without several key players due to injuries, including starting running back Michael Mansaray, starting linebacker Max Samuel, starting offensive lineman Dan Theiss and key wide receiver Devin Yeats, among others.
This marked the first time Valpo blocked a PAT since Sept. 23, 2023, when Kurt Kessen turned one away against Marist.
Simmons’ reception was the first of his career and he led the team with 63 receiving yards, all on the one catch.
Melchiori had a team-high five grabs, while Rumoro had four to go along with eight carries for 36 yards. Melchiori’s five receptions marked a season high as he returned to the catch column after none over the previous two games.
It was a clean game from a penalty perspective with each team committing just three infractions. The first half was entirely flag free.
Scoma improved to 12-for-13 on PATs this season and had his fourth made field goal in six tries.
The two teams were almost identical in yards gained through the air, with Dayton holding a slight 210-207 advantage. The Flyers notched 371 yards of total offense to Valpo’s 311.

MARIAN FOOTBALL
NO. 12 MARIAN OUTLASTS (RV) TAYLOR 42-35
UPLAND, Ind. – The Marian football team racked up over 500 yards of total offense and got a timely stop by the defense when called upon, as the Knights outlasted a Saturday shootout against Taylor 42-35. Marian’s victory improves the team to 5-1 on the season, extending their winning streak over Taylor to 16 games.
Marian wasted no time putting their imprint on Saturday’s game, receiving the opening kickoff and driving 60 yards in four plays to score the game’s first points in less than two minutes. Keagan La Belle capped off the first Knights’ series with a 10-yard touchdown, and after the defense forced a three-and-out, the offense again found the end zone, this time with Tristan Polk finding Jake Reichard for a 33-yard touchdown.
The 14-0 lead was grabbed in less than five minutes of game time, but the Trojans would respond, as one of the NAIA’s top-10 scoring teams found the end zone on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Alex Amburgy on their second series. The track meet first quarter continued as Marian took their third possession, with Polk completing a 90-yard drive with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Wanner. The big-play offense put the Knights in front 21-7, where the score would hold after the defense forced the second Taylor punt in the opening quarter with 1:20 to play in the period.
Taylor made a defensive stand to start the second quarter as the Marian drive that began in the waning moments of the first ended in a punt, and then wasted little time to make the game a one-score contest once more. Amburgy connected with Nathan Munson for their second touchdown hookup, connecting on a 78-yard flea-flicker for the Trojan touchdown.
As they did in the first quarter when called on, Marian responded, getting a lift on a 29-yard Jake Reichard catch that would later spark a 31-yard rushing touchdown for Keagan La Belle. The back-and-forth scoring would continue as Taylor matched La Belle’s second touchdown with a score of their own, but prior to the half ending, Marian would find paydirt once more, with Polk finishing a 75-yard series with a rushing touchdown. The quarterback’s third total touchdown of the night gave Marian a 35-21 lead that would hold going into halftime.
The third quarter continued the high-octane scoring approach that the first half possessed, as the Knights and Trojans put a combined 21 points on the board in the period. Taylor struck first with a Jedidiah Galvin rushing touchdown, only to see the score answered by Polk, as the quarterback completed a 55-yard series with his second rushing touchdown.
Polk’s second touchdown put Marian on top 42-28, however, like in the first half, the two-score lead would be quickly erased. A pair of Marian penalties and a Taylor gadget play aided a 73-yard scoring drive for the Trojans, as Ethan Albert’s second rushing touchdown brought the score to a 42-35 count.
After the Albert touchdown, defense became the game’s focal point, with the Knights and Trojans each locking down their opponent. Marian was forced to punt on the ensuing series following the Taylor score, while the Trojans’ Aiden O’Dell missed a 42-yard field goal in the closing moments of the third quarter, doinking the kick off the crossbar.
The Knights were unable to capitalize off the missed kick as Jake Reichard fumbled on the first play of the fourth quarter, as the team’s first turnover gave the Trojans the ball back in Marian territory. Taylor drove the ball into the red zone, but it would be Marian who stepped up to make a defensive stand, as Logan Carrington intercepted Amburgy in the end zone to slam the brakes on the series. Marian would kill nearly five minutes off the clock following the takeaway, but came up empty in adding to their lead, as Polk had a touchdown wiped off the board on a penalty, and Kenny Curry later missed a field goal to keep the score static.
Taylor would take over possession with 6:28 remaining in the game, and slowly marched the ball into Marian territory. The Knights bent as long as they could, eventually forcing the hosts into a 4th and two from the 28 with under a minute to play. Needing a stop, Luke Swartz made a play in the backfield, breaking up a Taylor trick play to force the turnover on downs, and seal the victory for Marian, as Polk took three knees to savor the 42-35 victory.
Saturday’s game featured 1007 combined yards of offense, with the Knights gaining 519 to Taylor’s 488. Keagan La Belle paced the ground attack, running for 236 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Tristan Polk ended the game passing 11-15 for 238 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for another two scores. Jake Reichard led the receiving core with 131 yards and a touchdown on six grabs, while Aidan Wanner logged 45 yards on two receptions and his second touchdown of the season. Riley Palmeter recorded 56 yards receiving in the win.
Defensively, the Knights made plays when called upon and were led by Isaiah Street’s career-high 15 tackles. The defensive end made eight solo stops and three tackles for loss in the win, while getting a pair of quarterback hurries. Cade Houseman and Wyatt Woodall each made nine tackles, and Logan Carrington logged his fifth interception of the season while making seven stops.
Marian’s defense limited the NAIA’s third-leading rusher Nathan Parker to 107 yards while keeping the sophomore out of the end zone, holding him 30 yards under his per-game average, while also denying any points to the No. 3 single scorer this season.
Marian returns home after two consecutive road games, hosting the University of Saint Francis for homecoming next Saturday. Kickoff from Ascension St. Vincent Field is set for 1:05 p.m.
