MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

TOP 25 ROUNDUP: DUKE, ARIZONA, ST. JOHN’S NAB CONFERENCE TOURNEY TITLES

Isaiah Evans scored 20 points and No. 1 Duke relied on various sources to beat No. 10 Virginia 74-70 and repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference tournament champion in a tense title game Saturday night at Charlotte.

Cayden Boozer, the twin brother of the ACC Player of the Year, matched his career high with 16 points for the second straight night and Cameron Boozer had 13 points for Duke (32-2), which could be the No. 1 overall seed when the NCAA Tournament bracket is unveiled Sunday.

It’s the first time a team has won consecutive ACC tournaments since the Blue Devils won three straight from 2009-11. Cameron Boozer was bothered by Virginia’s defense, shooting 3-for-17 from the field, but he had eight rebounds and eight assists.

Malik Thomas poured in 18 points and Sam Lewis racked up 17 points for second-seeded Virginia (29-5), which was aiming for its first conference tournament title since 2018. Ugonna Onyenso blocked nine shots as part of a record-setting three-game stretch.

No. 2 Arizona 79, No. 5 Houston 74

Koa Peat scored 21 points before fouling out and Brayden Burries also had 21 as the top-seeded Wildcats defeated the second-seeded Cougars in Kansas City, Mo., to win the Big 12 tournament.

Jaden Bradley scored 13 points and Ivan Kharchenkov added 12 for Arizona, which won its ninth straight game. The Wildcats (32-2) are in the running for the No. 1 overall seed after winning their first Big 12 championship in their second year in the league, avenging last year’s title game loss to Houston.

Joseph “JoJo” Tugler scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Houston (28-6), which had a five-game winning streak snapped. Mercy Miller had 13 points and seven rebounds.

No. 3 Michigan 68, No. 23 Wisconsin 65

Big Ten Player of the Year Yaxel Lendeborg hit a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to lift the top-seeded Wolverines to a victory over the fifth-seeded Badgers in the Big Ten Conference tournament semifinals at Chicago.

Lendeborg finished with 12 points for ranked Michigan (31-2), which advances to the Sunday title game Purdue. Aday Mara racked up 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks as the Wolverines defeated the only Big Ten team they failed to knock off during the regular season.

Austin Rapp paced Wisconsin (24-10) with 18 points. The Badgers rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to take a four-point lead, but their five-game winning streak ended.

No. 22 Vanderbilt 91, No. 4 Florida 74

The third-seeded Razorbacks got 29 points from Meleek Thomas, 24 from Darius Acuff Jr. and double-doubles from Trevon Brazile and Malique Ewen to escape with an overtime victory over the 15th-seeded Rebels in the Southeastern Conference tournament semifinals at Nashville.

Casey Cizikas opened the scoring for the Islanders, who entered the day tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for second place in the Metropolitan Division. David Rittich made 30 saves as New York improved to 6-3-0 since returning from the Olympic break.

Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman scored in the third for the Flames, who have lost seven of 10 (3-6-1) since resuming play following the Olympics. Dustin Wolf stopped all 17 shots he faced in relief of Devin Cooley, who gave up the three first-period goals on 10 shots.

Blue Jackets 2, Flyers 1 (SO)

Kirill Marchenko scored his 100th career goal and also tallied in the shootout to lift visiting Columbus past Philadelphia.

After the first five shootout attempts were unsuccessful, Marchenko made a late move to his backhand and lifted the puck past Dan Vladar. Marchenko is 10 for 15 in his career on shootouts, among the best marks in NHL history.

Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves made 18 saves in regulation and overtime before denying Matvei Michkov, Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny in the shootout. Columbus has recorded a point in nine straight games (5-0-4). Vladar finished with 27 saves for Philadelphia, which had won six of its last eight contests. Alex Bump scored the lone goal for the Flyers.

Kraken 5, Canucks 2

Bobby McMann scored twice and had an assist in his debut for his new team as Seattle snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over host Vancouver.

Matty Beniers had a goal and two assists and Jordan Eberle added three assists with McMann on the No. 1 line. Jared McCann and Jamie Oleksiak also scored and Brandon Montour had two assists for the Kraken, who remained a point behind San Jose in the chase for the Western Conference’s second and final wild-card playoff berth. Goaltender Philipp Grubauer made 32 saves.

Evander Kane and Marco Rossi scored for the league-worst Canucks, who dropped to 7-21-5 at home this season. Nikita Tolopilo stopped 28 of 33 shots.

Tarik Skubal racked up seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in his return to spring training as the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 6-1 victory over the host Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon in Dunedin, Fla.

Skubal allowed three hits and one run with no walks as he fired 61 pitches in his first outing since helping the United States defeat Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic on Monday. Matt Vierling delivered a pair of RBI doubles for the Tigers.

Max Scherzer matched zeroes against Skubal with four scoreless innings for the Blue Jays. He scattered two singles and two walks while fanning five. Daulton Varsho touched Skubal for a solo homer in the fifth. Riley Tirotta went 2-for-2 with a double.

Phillies 6, Yankees 4

Felix Reyes hit a two-run homer in the ninth to break a tie and give Philadelphia the victory over host New York in Tampa, Fla.

Leadoff man Justin Crawford went 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI while Edmundo Sosa added two hits for the Phillies. Starter Bryse Wilson tossed three hitless innings as Philadelphia improved to 8-11-1 for the spring.

Yankees starter Max Fried stretched out to 5 1/3 innings and was responsible for five hits, three runs and four strikeouts. Braden Shewmake forged a 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the eighth while Jasson Dominguez went 2-for-2 with a walk, run, RBI and stolen base.

Pirates 8, Orioles 6

Marcell Ozuna erased a two-run deficit with a three-run homer in the seventh as host Pittsburgh collected the win over Baltimore in Bradenton, Fla.

Henry Davis and Billy Cook contributed homers to highlight the Pirates’ 12-hit attack while Ryan O’Hearn and Nick Yorke cracked two hits apiece. Starter Carmen Mlodzinski fanned five over five innings while allowing seven hits and two runs.

Adley Rutschman (2-for-4) and Dylan Beavers (2-for-3) each delivered a two-run homer for the Orioles, who had 13 hits. Starter Trevor Rogers gave up four hits and two runs over four innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Marlins (ss) 4, Nationals 1

Brady House poked an RBI double in the fifth to account for the Nationals’ lone run. Starter Alex Clemmey gave up no hits and one walk over three innings, but he allowed two unearned runs as the Nats committed three of their four errors during the third inning.

Cardinals 7, Marlins (ss) 7

Nolan Gorman cranked his third homer of the spring as St. Louis and host Miami played to a draw in Jupiter, Fla.

Starter Andre Pallante struck out four and walked three as he gave up one run over five innings for the Cardinals. Gorman, Jose Fermin and Nathan Church contributed two hits apiece.

Ryan Ignoffo (2-for-2) homered in the eighth while Ian Lewis and Yiddi Cappe drove in two runs apiece for the Marlins. Starter Ryan Gusto surrendered six hits and two runs over four innings.

WILYER ABREU’S HR CARRIES VENEZUELA INTO WBC SEMIS OVER JAPAN

Wilyer Abreu hit the go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning Saturday night for Venezuela, which eliminated defending champion Japan with an 8-5 win in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals in Miami.

Venezuela, the runner-up in Pool D with a 3-1 record, will face Italy in Monday night’s semifinal. Italy outlasted Puerto Rico 8-6 in Houston earlier Saturday.

The winner of Venezuela-Italy will advance to Tuesday’s championship game against the winner of Sunday’s semifinal between the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Japan, which went 4-0 in Pool C play, was eliminated prior to the semifinals for the first time in six WBCs as its bid for a fourth title ended.

Abreu’s homer provided the biggest flourish in an entertaining game that began in historic fashion when Ronald Acuna Jr. and Shohei Ohtani each homered leading off the first.

Acuna Jr., the 2023 National League Most Valuable Player, and Ohtani, the two-time defending NL MVP who also won two MVPs in the American League, are the first pair of former MVPs to lead off the same game with homers.

Gleyber Torres gave Venezuela the lead a second time with an RBI double in the second before Japan went ahead 5-2 in the third, when Teruaki Sato delivered a run-scoring double and Shota Morishita later followed with a three-run homer.

Morishita entered the game an inning earlier in place of Seiya Suzuki, who exited with a right knee injury after he was caught stealing in the first.

Venezuela began its comeback in the fifth, when Maikel Garcia hit a two-run homer. Ezequiel Tovar and Torres opened the sixth with singles against losing pitcher Hiromi Itoh before Abreu unleashed a wild celebration by hitting a 409-foot homer to right.

Tovar added an insurance run in the eighth when he scored from second when Atsuki Taneichi’s pickoff throw sailed into centerfield.

Enmanuel De Jesus, Venezuela’s third pitcher, earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball. Daniel Palancia notched the save by striking out two in a perfect ninth that ended with Ohtani popping out.

Ranger Suarez started and the game for Venezuela and gave up all five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto started for Japan and allowed two runs in four innings.

ITALY STAYS HOT, DISPENSES PUERTO RICO TO ADVANCE TO WBC SEMIFINAL

Italy chased Puerto Rico starter Seth Lugo with four runs in the first inning en route to an 8-6 World Baseball Classic quarterfinal victory on Saturday afternoon in Houston.

The Italian team remained undefeated and advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal against the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between Venezuela and Japan.

JJ D’Orazio drove in three runs and Andrew Fischer knocked in two for Italy, which erased an 1-0 deficit with four runs in the first and then pushed its lead to 8-2 with a four-run fourth. Dylan Delucia threw four scoreless innings in middle relief while Greg Weissert got the final five outs to earn his third save of the tournament.

Puerto Rico’s Willi Castro led off the game with a home run off Italy starter Sam Aldegheri (1-0), but Lugo (1-1) retired just one batter in the bottom of the first. He was pulled after allowing four runs, three hits and two walks.

Christian Vazquez poked a two-run single with one out in the eighth to cap a four-run inning and pull Puerto Rico within 8-6, but Weissert retired five of six batters with the tying run at the plate.

GOLF

LUDVIG ABERG INCREASES PLAYERS LEAD TO 3 ENTERING FINAL ROUND

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, in pursuit of a third PGA Tour title and the biggest win of his career, maintained ice-cool composure as he increased his overnight lead to three shots in the third round of The Players Championship on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, whose most recent victory came at last year’s Genesis Invitational, for the most part played ultra-disciplined golf as he carded a 1-under-par 71 on another sun-splashed afternoon at TPC Sawgrass.

Aberg’s most frustrating moment of the day came at the par-4 18th where he surprisingly ran up a bogey after three-putting from 25 feet, this following a missed birdie opportunity from just 8 feet at the iconic par-3 17th.

“I definitely would have loved to come out of 16, 17 with at least one birdie, and the 3-putt on 18 kind of stings, annoys me a little bit,” the Swede said after finishing with a 13-under total of 203 in the PGA Tour’s flagship event.

“But overall, I started the day with a two-shot lead and ended with a three, so that’s a positive for sure. But Sawgrass tomorrow is going to be a challenge. It’s all about executing, and you’re going to get punished if you don’t, which is a fun way to play golf.”

Aberg will head into Sunday’s final round three strokes in front of American Michael Thorbjornsen, a former college friend and fellow resident in the Jacksonville area who reeled off five birdies, an eagle and two bogeys en route to a 67.

Cameron Young was alone in third at 9-under after recording a 72 while fellow Americans Brian Harman (69), Xander Schauffele (74) and Justin Thomas (72), England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (69), Viktor Hovland of Norway (69) and Canada’s Corey Conners (72) were a stroke further back in a six-way tie for fourth.

Ponte Vedra Beach resident Aberg had been two ahead overnight and made a slow start to the round, bogeying the par-4 fourth after finding the right rough off the tee and doing well to save par at the fifth where he sank a 13-foot putt after being bunkered off the tee.

Three more pars followed before he got up and down from a greenside bunker to birdie the par-5 ninth and stretch his lead to three shots.

Though a Young birdie briefly trimmed Aberg’s advantage to two, the Swede surged four ahead with a superb eagle at the par-5 11th where he struck his second shot to 17 feet and coolly sank the putt. On a course that was increasingly running firm, the Swede comfortably parred the next six holes before ending his day on a bitter note with a bogey at the last.

“Overall, I’m pleased with the way I was playing today in a tough condition,” said Aberg, whose best PGA Tour finish this season was a tie for third at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. “This is definitely the biggest individual tournament on the PGA Tour, non-major, so it will be a cool experience tomorrow to go out with a lead, which I’ve never done before. … I’m going to try to soak it in, enjoy it, but at the end of the day, trying to hit as few golf shots as I possibly can.”

For much of the day, Young was Aberg’s closest challenger. The 28-year-old rebounded from a bogey at the third with birdies at the sixth, 11th and 13th. Though he dropped another shot at the 14th, he also birdied the 17th, where he very nearly aced the hole. However, he was left to rue a double-bogey at the 18th where his tee shot sailed left into the water hazard.

“I feel like I battled pretty well,” said Young, whose only PGA Tour victory came at the 2025 Wyndham Championship. “I didn’t play great. Been driving it really well, and today I just didn’t get it in the fairways much.

“To get it back to 2-under with one hole to go, I feel like was pretty good. Honestly, the tee shot (on 18) wasn’t bad. I almost bent over to pick up the tee when I hit it. There’s a bunch of wind up there, and it just kept turning and turning and was a foot too much.”

Former Stanford University student Thorbjornsen, who played a lot of college golf with Aberg when the Swede represented Texas Tech, is relishing the prospect of them playing together in Sunday’s final pairing.

“I love playing golf with him,” said Thorbjornsen, a 24-year-old who is seeking his first PGA Tour win. “He was one of the guys in college that I looked up to, even though he’s only one year older than me. Very solid, very solid player. His mental game is extremely good as well. I’m really looking forward to it … and pretty cool that two hometown guys are in the final group!”

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who made his 70th consecutive PGA Tour cut on Friday with just one shot to spare, produced his best performance of the week as he carded a flawless 5-under 67 that included three birdies in his first six holes.

“I was a little sharper today than I was the first two days,” said the four-time major winner after finishing the round tied for 26th, nine strokes off the lead at 4 under. “I felt like I was swinging it better each day of the tournament. Today hit a few more fairways and was able to give myself a few more looks for birdie.”

World No. 2 and defending champion Rory McIlroy, who withdrew from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational after two rounds due to a back injury, struggled at times with his driver and his putter en route to a 72 and a 1-over total, tied for 57th.

Winner of The Players Championship in 2019 and again last year, the Northern Irishman twice found water off the tee and he failed to take advantage of a couple of makeable birdie putts at the seventh and eighth before missing a 4-footer for par at the ninth.

JOAQUIN NIEMANN, LEE WESTWOOD TAKE LEAD AT LIV GOLF SINGAPORE

Defending champion Joaquin Niemann shot a 66 to surge into a third-round tie for the lead at LIV Golf Singapore on Saturday.

The Chilean mixed seven birdies and two bogeys to tie Lee Westwood of England atop the leaderboard at 10-under-par 203 for the tournament, one stroke ahead of second-round leader Bryson DeChambeau and Richard Lee of Canada.

Westwood made birdies on three of the final four holes to finish with a 68 at the Sentosa Golf Club, which played tougher than it did in the first two rounds.

“I would say it’s a major championship-style golf course. It’s very demanding,” Westwood said. “Even though the rough isn’t that thick, it asks you to hit a lot of fairways, and it’s difficult to score from the rough. You don’t have as much control on the golf ball.”

Niemann agreed about the challenge the course presents.

“I’ve been hitting the ball really good. I think that’s the key,” Niemann said. “It’s a really stressful golf course, I’ll say. There’s a lot of danger off the tee, a lot of water on second shots. One way or the other, I feel like I’ve been kind of like stress-free after I hit the shot. Once I get on the tee, there’s some pressure there, and then once I hit the ball, it goes right where I’m seeing with my eyes, so it feels satisfying.”

DeChambeau followed his second-round 65 with a one-over 72, but he wasn’t dismayed despite bogeys at holes 8, 10 and 12.

“I played really well. The greens on 8, 9, 10, 11 got really slow,” he said. “For some reason, there wasn’t as much wind around there and I guess the greens got slower in that area and I three-putted a few of them and that cost me some momentum. Other than that, I played great golf. I almost played just as good as yesterday, just things didn’t line up.”

Lee, a LIV Golf wild card, birdied the final hole to record a 69 and tie DeChambeau.

Spain’s Jon Rahm shot an even-par 71 to stay within striking distance of the leaders, three strokes off the pace. Marc Leishman of Australia (71) stands alone in sixth place at 6-under par.

In the team competition, 4Aces are atop the leaderboard. Captain Dustin Johnson’s round of 68 sent the team to 16-under, two shots ahead of Ripper GC and Legion XIII, and put Johnson in a tie for seventh place with six others at 5-under.

INDIANA SPORTS TEAM RELEASES

INDIANA PACERS

GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT BUCKS

The Indiana Pacers (15-52) head north to Milwaukee for a matinee matchup on Sunday, March 15 at 3:30 PM ET as they clash with the Bucks (27-39). Milwaukee has lost four straight contests, including a defeat in Atlanta on Saturday ahead of its matchup with the Pacers on Sunday.

Indiana fell to the Knicks on Friday, 101-92, in a competitive contest that lacked a 20-point scorer wearing Blue and Gold. Jarace Walker led the Pacers with 18 points, but the scoring was quite balanced among the remaining active players.

Ten players hit the floor for the Pacers, and seven of them notched between eight and 12 points. Ivica Zubac recorded 11 points and eight rebounds in his second night of action for the Pacers, while Walker narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The loss marked Indiana’s 12th straight.

The Bucks are in a losing skid,. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s status is in question as Milwaukee’s star forward manages a right calf strain sustained in December. The injury has cost him 25 games this season as the Bucks seek to preserve their leading scorer.

Kevin Porter Jr. keeps the Bucks afloat when Antetokounmpo is unavailable as he scores 17 points per game, and Ryan Rollins contributes over 16 points nightly. Production drops off from there, however, as the Bucks struggle to find offense without the gravity of Antetokounmpo.

If Antetokounmpo is unavailable, Milwaukee will be without his average 27.5 points.

The Bucks are 6-5 on the second night of a back-to-back this season, and that record improves to 4-1 in back-to-back games that require travel.

Milwaukee quests for postseason eligibility as Indiana continues to squeeze the most out of its season following elimination from the playoff race.

After the clash with the Bucks on Sunday, Indiana will travel to New York for a rematch with the Knicks on Tuesday night.

Feb. 6, 2026: The Bucks improved to 3-0 against the Pacers this season while grabbing their first 3-game winning streak of the year as they defeated Indiana, 105-99.

Milwaukee played without Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was sidelined with a calf strain, but pulled out the win behind a trio of 20-point scorers. Kevin Porter Jr. led the way with 23 points, followed by Ryan Rollins with 22, and Bobby Portis with 21 points.

Andrew Nembhard notched 21 points and eight assists to lead the Pacers, and Pascal Siakam contributed 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Indiana was within four points of the lead, 91-87, with four minutes and change remaining on the clock. The Bucks then went on a 7-0 run to seal the victory.

The loss was Indiana’s third straight, and first stop of a six-game road trip.

Noteworthy

The Pacers are 97-121 against the Bucks all-time.

Pacers and Bucks is the single most-frequent matchup in the NBA since the start of the 2023-24 season. The two teams have met 23 times (regular and postseason) in that stretch.

Bucks guard Gary Harris is an Indiana native. He grew up in Fishers, and played his high school basketball for the Hamilton Southeastern Royals. Harris was Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2012.

INDY IGNITE

OMAHA WINS EPIC FIVE-SETTER TO END INDY WIN STREAK IN FRONT OF RECORD CROWD

OMAHA, Neb. (March 14, 2026) – All good things must come to an end, including the Indy Ignite winning streak. It didn’t happen without ultimate battle spirit from the Ignite, who nearly pulled off a reverse sweep before falling to the Omaha Supernovas in five grueling sets.

The slugfest played out before 16,838 fans at CHI Health Center, an attendance record for a women’s indoor professional volleyball match in the United States—and every fan got their money’s worth. Omaha won by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 26-28, 22-25, 16-14, snapping Indy’s victory string at eight in a row. At 14-3, the Ignite still reside atop the Major League Volleyball standings, a full three games ahead of Dallas, which plays Sunday.

As has been the case nearly every time Indy and Omaha have met over the past two seasons, either team could have walked away a winner. Feeding off the energy of the record crowd, the Supernovas started aggressively while the Ignite struggled to a 31.7% kill percentage in the opening set. Add six Omaha block points and the Supernovas took the first frame by five points. Indy hit much better in the second set (45.5%) but Omaha was able to eke out a two-point win and put the Ignite on the ropes.

Indy launched a monumental effort in the third set to extend the match. Defensively, the Ignite registered an amazing 34 digs, nine from outside hitter Anna DeBeer to go along with her six kills. Setter Mia Tuaniga dished 20 assists and dropped three kills of her own, including back-to-back dunks that put Indy up 27-26. Outside hitter Kayla Lund terminated the overtime set with a kill of her own.

The Ignite killed at a blistering 46.2% rate in the fourth set that was tied 10 times – the last at 20-20 before Indy pulled away to square the match at 2-2. The fifth set saw the Ignite fall behind 7-3 before rallying to tie things at 12, 13 and again at 14. However, Omaha scored the final two points, the last on the Supernovas’ 18th block of the night.

Ignite head coach Lauren Bertolacci tinkered with her lineup throughout the match to find the right combinations and energy, using 13 of her 15 players. She was proud that her team battled back from the 2-0 deficit that came up a few points shy of a memorable victory.

“On the good side, we showed that we quite literally have no quit in us and we’re just going to hang around until the very end all the time,” Bertolacci said. “Unfortunately, we just had a few moments of undiscipline in the game that cost us. That’s a team (Omaha) that won a championship before; they have a championship roster. Those moments of undiscipline are going to hurt us against this kind of team, so I think it’s a good lesson for us to take and improve on.”

Bertolacci was a bit surprised but pleased to see Indy’s 39.7% kill percentage for the match, nearly 10% better than Omaha’s rate. But the Ignite also totaled 21 hitting errors to the Supernovas’ 12 and Omaha doubled Indy in block points (18-9).

“I preach kill percentage and we had a much higher kill percentage than Omaha, but boy did we hit every error possible,” Bertolacci observed. “That’s OK for me because I’m looking for us to get better and better, keeping that kill percentage high and learning how to naturally lower those errors. I don’t want to lower the kill percentage, even at the cost of a loss tonight, because it’s very important for me, come the finals, that we’re able to hit this kill percentage and hopefully not hit as many errors.”

DeBeer and middle blocker Lydia Martyn shared the lead in kills for Indy with 12 apiece. Lund and opposite hitter Azhani Tealer had 11 each. Middle blocker Blake Mohler added eight kills and a team-high five blocks as the Ignite placed five scorers in double figures.

Tuaniga dispersed a season-high 63 assists, including 20 in the third set. The Ignite defense finished with 85 digs, led by libero Elena Scott’s season-best 20 and followed by Lund (14), DeBeer (13) and Tuaniga (12).

Veteran middle blocker Mohler appreciated the effort from her teammates but knows the bar must continue to be raised as the season progresses and the competition stiffens.

“Teams are going to continue to get better and they’re going to play a bit more cohesive,” she said, “and we have to be able to adjust to that and stop them and not make errors. We hold ourselves to a really high standard in our gym, and tonight I don’t think we played fully to that standard.”

Even in defeat, the impact of the record crowd wasn’t lost on the Ignite.

“That’s what every volleyball player dreams of, playing in front of a crowd that genuinely cares about volleyball and cares about the athletes and wanting this league to do well,” Mohler said. “It’s tough that we were on the losing side of that, but that crowd was amazing and I’m really happy for them all to have that here.”

INDIANA FOOTBALL

MAXWELL FOOTBALL CLUB HONORS CIGNETTI, MENDOZA WITH NATIONAL AWARDS

ATLANTA – For the second time in 2026, Atlanta had a distinctly cream and crimson feel as the Maxwell Football Club presented its two highest season honors to Hoosiers on Saturday (March 14). Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti and quarterback Fernando Mendoza were each honored by the organization with the Geroge Munger Award and Maxwell Award, respectively.

Cignetti earned the George Munger Award, given to the organization’s national coach of the year. He has won 14 of the 17 national coach of the year awards he was eligible to win between the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The second-year Hoosier headman is the first FBS coach to win consecutive national coach of the year awards from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Associated Press, ESPN Home Depot, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation.

He is the first-ever Division I head coach to start 10-0 in consecutive seasons at different schools. (James Madison, 2023; Indiana, 2024) and is one of three coaches all-time to begin his Power 4 coaching career with consecutive 10-0 starts. His first two Indiana teams own the only double-digit win seasons in program history (11 – 2024; 16 – 2025), and the 16-0 record tied the 1894 Yale squad for the best record in college football history.

A program-best 12 All-America selections over his two seasons include two-time honorees Aiden Fisher and D’Angelo Ponds, while IU claimed four conference specialty awards in 2025: Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year (Mendoza), Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year (Carter Smith) and Bakken-Anderson Kicker of the Year (Nico Radicic).

Mendoza led the nation in passing touchdowns (41) and touchdowns responsible for (48), both set IU single season standards. He is the third Big Ten quarterback since 2000 with three-straight games of at least four passing touchdowns and zero interceptions – C.J. Stroud (Ohio State; 2021) and Kyle Orton (Purdue; 2004, four straight). The Miami, Florida, native was also the only FBS quarterback since at least 1996 with multiple games of at least 90 percent completion and four touchdown passes versus Power 4 opponents.

INDIANA BASEBALL

OFFENSE GOES QUIET IN SATURDAY SETBACK

EUGENE, Ore. – Besides a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Cole Decker, there was no offense to be found on Saturday (March 14) afternoon for the Indiana Baseball team (7-11, 1-4 B1G). The Hoosiers had a hard time getting to Oregon starter Collin Clarke in a 5-1 loss at PK Park. The Ducks did their damage in innings two through four to take the middle game of the weekend and clinch the series.

Graduate student southpaw Tony Neubeck (L, 1-2) gave up a trio of home runs but managed to get through four innings. He recorded five strikeouts and walked just one batter. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ivan Mastalski did a good job in relief, scattering one hit in two scoreless frames. Freshman right-handed pitcher Kellen English and redshirt senior righty Pete Haas recorded the final six outs of the game.

IU’s top seven hitters couldn’t find a hit against a talented Oregon pitching staff. Sophomore outfielder Hogan Denny and freshman second baseman Landen Fry each had hard-hit balls robbed by outstanding defensive plays from the Ducks’ outfielders. IU threatened a bit in the sixth inning with two runners on and no outs but couldn’t get anyone around to score.

The Hoosiers will look to salvage the series on Sunday (March 15) afternoon as sophomore southpaw Brayton Thomas heads to the mound. The contest will be broadcasted nationally on Big Ten Network at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT. Zach Mackey (PxP) and Scott Pose (Color) will have the call.

INDIANA SOFTBALL

TROUTT THROWS NINE STRIKEOUTS & HOOSIERS TAKE THE SERIES

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– After initially giving up a home run in the first batter faced, Ella Troutt settled in the circle and went the distance controlling the game.

That would be the only run she’d allow and would only give up three more hits in her 6.0 innings pitched. The sophomore dictated the game, throwing nine strikeouts while the Hoosiers hit well on offense.

The combination proved successful as Indiana defeated Rutgers, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon to win the series and mark its fifth win in a row.

The Hoosiers are now 21-5 on the year and 4-1 in the Big Ten.

GAME 2: INDIANA 6, RUTGERS 1

*Indiana leads the series, 2-0

KEY MOMENTS

• Rutgers’ Sam Rowher hit a home run over the left field wall in the game’s first at bat to put the Scarlet Knights up 1-0.

• It didn’t take long for Indiana to respond as Aly VanBrandt doubled, Alex Cooper walked and then Avery Parker drove them all home with a crushed ball that hit the scoreboard in left field.

• Madelyn Strader hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the third to score two more runs and make it a 5-1 game.

• Alli Gavin would give the Hoosiers another insurance run when she hit a sac fly to left to score Strader.

• Troutt threw two strikeouts in both the fifth and sixth innings to get her game count of nine.

• Rutgers got two runners on in the top of the seventh before Cassidy Kettleman made a miraculous catch to end the game back tracking to the left field wall on a deep ball hit by Siera Hoekstra.

NOTABLES

• Troutt’s nine strikeouts are a career high.

• Her 6.0 innings of work gave her the win to improve her season record to 5-4.

• Indiana’s win marks its second-consecutive series victory after defeating Minnesota in the Big Ten opening series, 2-1.

• The Hoosiers have won 11 games in a row over Rutgers and are currently on a five-game winning streak since March 7.

• Six different Hoosiers registered a hit with Madelyn Strader notching two.

The win moves Purdue’s record to 26-8 overall and advances Purdue to its second title-game appearance in the last four seasons (2023 – champions).

UCLA led today for 48 seconds (2-0), the first time in the Big Ten Tournament that Purdue has trailed. In 120 minutes of play, Purdue has trailed for a total of 48 seconds.

With the win over the Bruins, Purdue has won six straight games in the United Center, after winning the tournament title in the 2023 tournament played in Chicago.

The six straight wins in the building are the longest for a team in the United Center since the Chicago Bulls won nine straight home games from Nov. 2021 to Jan. 2022.

Purdue is now 10-3 in the Big Ten Tournament since the 2022 event and the senior class of Fletcher Loyer, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Braden Smith have set a school record with eight victories in the Big Ten Tournament (8-2 record).

Purdue will be making its seventh appearance in the Big Ten Tournament championship game, posting a 2-4 record. Purdue made appearances in 1998, 2009, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2023 and 2026.

Purdue is just 1-5 all-time against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament, losing in the championship game in 1998 and 2018.

Purdue is first No. 7-seed to advance to the Big Ten Tournament championship game.

Purdue is the only team to have won at least one game in the Big Ten Tournament in each of the last five seasons.

Purdue improved to 21-1 when holding opponents under 48 percent shooting.

Purdue is 17-1 when holding foes to 69 or fewer points this season.

Oscar Cluff recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two assists. When Cluff secures a double-double, Purdue is 10-0 this season.

Trey Kaufman-Renn also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, good for his 11th of the season. When Kaufman-Renn records a double-double this season, Purdue is 10-1 (lone loss to Michigan).

Braden Smith dished out nine more assists and now has 1,064 for his career, needing 12 more dimes to tie Bobby Hurley for first place on the NCAA career assists list. Smith set a record for most assists in a single Big Ten Tournament with 35.

Fletcher Loyer scored 14 points, going 4-of-10 from long range. When Loyer makes four or more 3-pointers in a game during his career, Purdue is 25-2. Loyer has made at least two 3-pointers in 14 straight games and is shooting 23-of-50 (.460) from long range over the last six games.

CHICAGO (AP) — Oscar Cluff had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 18 Purdue beat short-handed UCLA 73-66 on Saturday to advance to the Big Ten Tournament championship game.

Cluff scored eight points as Purdue (26-8) outscored UCLA (23-11) 11-4 over the final 3:41. Fletcher Loyer scored 14. Braden Smith contributed nine more assists, giving him 1,064 in his career. He needs 13 to break Bobby Hurley’s NCAA record of 1,076 for Duke from 1989-93.

Trey Kaufman-Ren added 12 points and 10 rebounds, helping Purdue advance to the conference final for the first time since winning the tournament in Chicago in 2023. The Boilermakers will meet No. 3 Michigan. The Wolverines, seeking a championship repeat, beat No. 23 Wisconsin 68-65 when Yaxel Lendeborg made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining.

Already missing star Tyler Bilodeau after he exited Friday’s win over No. 8 Michigan State with a right leg injury, UCLA had to get by in the second half without guard Donovan Dent. He strained a calf and was limited to two points in 10 minutes after scoring 23 and dishing out 12 assists against the Spartans.

Trent Perry led UCLA with 15 points. Xavier Booker scored 12, and Eric Dailey Jr. had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Trailing 58-48, UCLA went on a 12-2 run and tied it at 60 on Perry’s jumper with 4:33 remaining. It was 62-all when Purdue’s Oscar Cluff scored on a tip-in, C.J. Cox drove for a layup and Cluff scored on a put-back with just over two minutes remaining.

UCLA’s Skyy Clark then made it a four-point game with a layup. But Cluff made four free throws in the final 43 seconds, and the Boilermakers got some payback for a two-point loss at Pauley Pavilion in January.

BOILER BITS

Offensive Highlights

Haley Painter: 2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R

Khloe Banks: 1-for-3, R

Anna Moore: 1-for-2, RBI, R

Ashlynn Campbell: 1-for-4, R

Moriah Polar: 1-for-2

Brooke Perez: (W, 4-0) 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 8 BF

The Buckeyes began with back-to-back walks to put two runners aboard in the first, but Gossett worked two fly outs and a strikeout to avoid the jam, keeping it scoreless.

In the bottom of the inning, Polar singled through the left side, cementing herself further as the nation’s hits leader, before Anna Moore worked a walk. Bella Douglas also walked in the inning to load the bases, but the Buckeyes worked two flyouts to also avoid the jam.

In the second, after a leadoff single from Ohio State, Gossett struck out the side, two swinging, one looking. The Boilers did not make any noise in the bottom half of the frame, going down in order.

Purdue came alive in the third, plating three runs on two hits and one Buckeye error. Banks led off the inning with a walk and moved over on a groundout from Polar. Moore drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single to right field.

On the next play, Haley Painter smoked a double up the middle, and made it to third on an error in the outfield, which also scored Moore. Douglas earned her second walk of the day and stole second, followed by another walk by Gossett which loaded the bases. Delaney Reefe earned her first RBI of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly to bring the tally up to three.

Ohio State threatened in the fourth, beginning with a leadoff walk. The Buckeyes loaded the bases with two outs on back-to-back walks, but Gossett worked a fielder’s choice to end the inning unscathed.

Purdue added to its lead in the fourth. A single, a walk, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Painter who brought in one on a sacrifice fly to straight-away center.

The Buckeyes made it a game in the top of the fifth, plating three runs on back-to-back homers. After the first, a two run home run, Brianna Fontenot came to the mound in relief for Gossett. Fontenot’s first pitch to the Ohio State lineup was a home run. The freshman dug in deep on the mound, not allowing another run to score and giving her team a chance to score in the bottom of the inning.

Two singles, a walk, and another errant throw from the Buckeyes was enough to add a fifth run to the board for Purdue in the bottom of the fifth which proved crucial as the Buckeyes did not yield in the sixth, tying up the score in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer.

Yet, the Boilers did not yield either.

In the bottom of the sixth, Purdue began the inning with a double from Painter, followed by the third walk of the day for Douglas. Both runners moved over on a long flyout from Gossett, before Painter scored on an error by the Buckeyes.

Brooke Perez came to the mound in the sixth for the Boilers earning a huge strikeout which ended the threat. The senior continued to work in the seventh, earning the win on the mound, her first as a Big Ten pitcher.

Purdue takes the serious over the Buckeyes for the first time in a three-game capacity since 2014.

BOILERMAKERS RIDE 7-RUN INNING TO SERIES-CLINCHING WIN

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Westin Boyle and CJ Richmond connected for a two-run double and two-run homer consecutively after Maryland allowed an infield pop up to drop, delivering the big hits in a seven-run second inning as Purdue Baseball defeated Maryland 8-6 Saturday.

The Boilermakers (12-5, 3-2 Big Ten) clinched a series victory, their first on the road in Big Ten play since take two of three at Minnesota to open the league schedule last season.

Purdue improved to 6-0 on Saturdays this season and remained unbeaten when Zach Erdman starts on the mound. Erdman struck out six over 4 1/3 innings of four-run ball Saturday. The lefty has racked up at least five punchouts in each of his five starts.

Jake Kramer retired all five batters he faced, striking out the first and final, as part of a five-out save. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Kramer entered the game with a runner at second and Maryland (10-8, 0-2 Big Ten) home run leader Ryan Costello at the plate. Purdue had retired Costello just twice over his first eight plate appearances in the series. Kramer struck him out looking on four pitches.

The Boilermakers sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the second while scoring at least four runs in a frame for the sixth time this week. They have posted big innings featuring eight, seven, six, five and four (twice) runs.

Ross Highfill and Dylan Drake ignited the rally from the bottom of the lineup. Highfill aggressively went first to third on Drake’s one-out single to center field, sliding in safely at third on a bang-bang play. Drake moved up to second on the back side of the action. Ali Banks followed with a sacrifice fly and Aaron Manias’ RBI single made it 3-1 Purdue.

After a walk to Brandon Rogers, Sam Flores swung at the first pitch and hit a high pop up above the mound. The UMD infield converged on it, but pitcher Evan Smith did not take charge; the ball hit off the glove of the third baseman and dropped to the turf. Manias scored on the play. Purdue took advantage of the extra out in a big way as Boyle connected for a gapper to the wall in left center and Richmond homered to the left of the batter’s eye in center field.

STREAKS EXTENDED

• Brandon Rogers: 11-game on-base; 10-game on-base in Big Ten play (since April 27, 2025)

• Aaron Manias: 8-game on-base; 5-game hit in Big Ten play

• Zach Erdman: 5+ strikeouts in 5 consecutive starts

The Terrapins stranded 11 runners on the base, including leaving the bases loaded without scoring in the fifth inning. Graham Kollen and Trevor Kester-Johnson delivered the key outs for Purdue in the frame. Kollen struck out Bud Coombs on three pitches for the second out and Kester-Johnson won a lefty-lefty matchup vs. Aden Hill to finish the frame.

Banks reached second base to begin the game for the second day in a row. His double down the right field line led to a run after a fly ball to center field dropped for an unexpected hit and Purdue executed a walk-off play with runners on the corners and a two-strike count on Flores. Manias drew a throw to second base and Banks scored without a throw as Manias successfully returned to first base safely. Moments later, Flores doubled down the left field line in the first inning for the second day in a row.

Erdman labored through a three-run third inning his second time through the UMD lineup, but he finished it strong with a strikeout. He went on to retire six consecutive batters from the third through fifth innings.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S LAX

IRISH FALL TO STANFORD

STANFORD, Calif. – The #11/12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-3, 2-3) fell 11-17 to the undefeated #2/2 Stanford Cardinal (9-0, 6-0) on the road late Saturday evening.

As the Irish have proved all season, it doesn’t matter if they trail early – they always battle their way back into games. Despite trailing 0-7, the Irish continued to chip away at the deficit as they brought it within as few as three goals at 7-10 in the third period. While the Irish continued to battle, the Cardinal were persistent in their second half efforts as well as they would ultimately take home the win.

Kate Timarky recorded her sixth hat trick of the season as she led the Irish with three goals on the night. She was followed by Maura Irish, Madison Rassas, and Grace Maroney with two goals each. Charley Bacigalupo and Emma Murphy chipped in one goal a piece for the Irish. Murphy also dished out a team-best two assists for three points on the night. Meghan O’Hare finished with a game-high four ground balls for the Irish and caused two turnovers.

The Cardinal offense struck quickly as they posted an early 3-0 lead over the Irish in the first four minutes of play. Stanford would go on to score two more goals in the period as they led 6-0 going into the second quarter.

The Stanford run continued as they found the back of the net to start the second period, making it a 0-7 deficit for Notre Dame. The Irish weren’t going anywhere though as Rassas responded with a caused turnover, picking off the pass on a Stanford clear attempt. She dished it to Timarky who was able to score in transition and put the Irish on the board.

It was followed by a goal from Maura Irish to cut the deficit to five goals with 9:22 remaining in the half, but the Cardinal had an answer shortly after to make it a six-goal game yet again at 2-8. Rassas got in on the scoring action as Maura Irish found her on the left wing where Rassas played the bounce to find the back of the net for her first goal of the day.

The Notre Dame run continued as a Patterson save on a free position shot was followed by a made free position goal from Maura Irish for her second goal of the day. The Irish closed out the half on a 4-2 run to make it a five-goal ballgame with a score of 4-9 heading into the second half.

The Irish offense struck early to start the third quarter. In less than a three minute stretch, a 3-0 Irish run on goals from Bacigalupo, Maroney, and Rassas made it 7-10 with 10:55 left in the period.

The Cardinal answered with a run of their own as they responded with five straight goals to extend their lead to 7-15 heading into the fourth.

However, the Irish weren’t going anywhere in the final period. Their offensive efforts persisted as a Maroney goal sparked a 4-0 Notre Dame run with two more goals from Timarky and a goal from Murphy to bring Notre Dame within four at 11-15.

Despite Notre Dame’s late efforts, the Cardinal would score two more goals in the final 1:49 for a final score of 11-17 at Stanford.

UP NEXT

The Irish are back in action on Saturday, March 21 as they host Florida State at 1:00 p.m. for their Daughters For Dads game. The homestand continues as they will then host Robert Morris and Cal to cap off their three-game homestand.

NOTRE DAME BASEBALL

LATE RALLY STOPPED SHORT FOR IRISH AT LOUISVILLE

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A back-and-forth game saw the Notre Dame baseball team come up just short in an 8-7 setback at Louisville.

The Irish got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second. Jayce Lee had a two-out single to center field, and Davis Johnson drove the second pitch of his at-bat well clear of the left field fence for a two-run home run for the Irish.

The Cardinals put a run up in the bottom half of the second while a strong 6-4-3 double play by the Irish limited the chances for Louisville in the inning.

In the third, Drew Berkland led off with a single before Bino Watters drew a two-out walk to put a pair on base. Parker Brzustewicz drove the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a double as Berkland and Watters both came in to score for a 4-1 advantage.

Mark Quatrani cut down a runner trying to steal second base in the bottom of the third as Caden Crowell faced the minimum in the inning.

The Cardinals, however, plated a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-3 game. Louisville used another timely two-out hit in the fifth as they took a 5-4 lead into the sixth.

Jayce Lee led off the sixth with a single. With two outs gone, a hard-hit ball by Jamie Zee to the right-center gap led to a collision between two Louisville outfielders, and Lee came around from second to score on the play to knot the score at 5-5.

The Cardinals put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs before Xavier Hirsch used a big strikeout looking to end the inning.

Noah Coy drew a lead-off walk, and Mark Quatrani was hit by a pitch to put the first two on base for the Irish in the seventh. Bino Watters used a groundout to advance the pair into scoring position. Parker Brzustewicz delivered his second two-RBI double of the game with a shot to right field to drive in Coy and Quatrani.

Xavier Hirsch retired the side in order with a strikeout, a groundout and a strikeout to flip the game over to the eighth inning.

Louisville scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-7 lead heading into the ninth.

#1 IRISH DEFENSE STIFLES MICHIGAN IN 9-4 WIN

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — No. 1/1 Notre Dame stays unbeaten, defeating Michigan by a score of 9-4 to improve to 6-0 on the season. This marks the second 6-0 start for the Fighting Irish in the last four seasons.

The Irish defense was the story of the game, holding Michigan to a season-low four goals. Notre Dame held Michigan scoreless for the final 28:17 of the contest.

Thomas Ricciardelli continued his impressive form in goal, making 11 saves while only allowing four goals for a robust 73.3 save percentage.

On the offensive end the trio of Josh Yago, Brock Behrman and Matt Jeffery each scored twice to pace the attack. Behrman also added two assists and Yago had one.

Freshman Aidan Diaz-Matos was effective at the dot, winning 10-of-14 faceoffs and scooping up seven ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish scored the first two goals to open the game, as Jeffery and Behrman each found the back of the net to open a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest. Michigan scored less than a minute later followed by an extra-man goal from Notre Dame’s Brady Pokorny to give the Irish a 3-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.

Notre Dame extended the lead to four off back-to-back goals from Yago, making the score 5-1 midway through the second stanza.

The Wolverines clawed back with the final two scores of the half to trim the Irish lead to two at 5-3.

Michigan scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to one at 13:17 and was given a two-minute, man-up opportunity that was locked in on the ensuing possession.

The Notre Dame man-down unit locked in and didn’t allow a score in the two-minute span, swinging momentum back to the home sideline. Luke Miller and Fisher Finley then scored their first goals of the afternoon in the final 4 minutes of the third to extend the lead to 7-4.

Behrman fired in his second of the day in the opening 15 seconds of the fourth frame on an extra-man opportunity to push the advantage back up to four at 8-4. In the final minute of play Jeffery put an exclamation mark on the win with his second goal to make the final score 9-4.

STAT OF THE GAME

BALL STATE SOFTBALL

SOFTBALL’S RALLIES FALL SHORT AGAINST AKRON

MUNCIE, Ind. – – Despite bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in each of Saturday’s games, the Ball State softball team could not complete rallies in a pair of losses to Akron Saturday afternoon at the Ball State Softball Stadium.

In the opening game, the Cardinals (11-10; 0-3 Mid-American Conference) trailed by three runs heading into the bottom of the fifth. Senior pitcher Ella Whitney opened the frame with a solo home run, and one out later, BSU used three straight singles to load the bases. Unfortunately, a fielder’s choice and a pop fly ended the threat and helped the Zips (11-16; 3-0 MAC) complete the 5-3 victory.

Despite a brilliant performance from sophomore Breanna Severino in the nightcap, Akron was able to manufacture the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Ball State would not go quietly, however, as two singles and a walk helped the hosts load the bases with one out.

Once again, the Zips defense came up with another clutch play, turning a shallow popup into a game-ending double play, leaving the score 1-0.

In her best performance of the young season, Severino limited Akron to six hits and one run in a complete-game effort in the nightcap. That was coming off holding the Zips to no runs and two hits over 1.2 innings of relief in the opener. She also combined to strike out four batters over the two games.

Seven different Cardinals recorded hits in the opener, led by two from junior shortstop Maia Pietrzak. Pietrzak would also get a single in the nightcap, while finishing the series with a team-highs in batting average (.545 / 6-for-11), RBI (3) and runs scored (3).

The Ball State softball team is scheduled to return to action Tuesday with a 4 p.m. home game versus Purdue which will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

GAME 1 SCORING SUMMARY – Ball State 3 – Akron 5

B1 – Ball State jumped out to its first lead of the series thanks to a bases-loaded RBI groundout from senior left fielder Ashlee Lovett (1-0)

B1 – Two batters later, junior third baseman Mandy Lauth drew a bases-loaded walk (2-0)

T4 – Akron did all its damage in the fourth inning, starting on a bases-loaded RBI grounder by Meagan Lee who reached on a BSU error (2-1)

T4 – Sophia Wygast gave the Zips the lead with a two-run single to left field (2-3)

T4 – An RBI groundout by Andrea Day extended the lead to two runs (2-4)

T4 – Akron’s final run came on an error at third base (2-5)

B5 – Whitney tried to spark a Ball State rally with a no-doubter to deep left field (3-5)

GAME 2 SCORING SUMMARY – Ball State 0 – Akron 1

T7 – Akron’s Haley Glass drove in the game’s lone run on a single to right field (1-0)

EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ACES CONTINUE CINDERELLA RUN WITH OT WIN OVER ILLINOIS STATE TO REACH MVC TITLE GAME

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team continued their improbable run through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday night, downing 3rd-seeded Illinois State in overtime, 75-70. Evansville advances to Sunday’s championship game for the first time since 2009 and will take on top-seeded Murray State at 1 PM at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, Evansville becomes the first 10 seed to ever reach the MVC Championship. The win also marked the Aces’ first over the Redbirds since 2017, snapping an 18-game losing streak.

Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) was outstanding once again for the Aces, scoring a game-high 24 points while adding six rebounds and five assists. Runner wrote her name in the UE history books in the win, breaking Evansville’s single-season records for points (625), assists (184) and free throws (216).

Evansville jumped out to an early lead, taking an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes of action, highlighted by three-pointers by Georgia Cox (Ballarat, Australia/Eastern Illinois) and Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe). The Redbirds battled back to a take a one-point lead at the 3:40 mark, but the Aces went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter to take a 19-13 lead.

The second quarter saw both teams struggling offensively, with Illinois State tying the game at 22 with 4:11 to go in the half. However, the Aces outscored the Redbirds 5-1 to close the quarter to take a 27-23 lead into halftime.

Illinois State battled back to tie things up in the third quarter, evening the score at 30 with 7:20 to go. The game would see three more ties in the following five minutes before Illinois State break through to take the lead with a three-pointer before taking a 42-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Coming out of halftime, Evansville continued to control the game, with a layup from Runner at 7:25 mark in the third quarter to give the Aces a 40-30 lead. Evansville got the lead up to 13 with less than a minute to go in the quarter on a triple by Huber before taking a 42-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Illinois State extended their lead to five, but the Aces battled back to tie it up on a pair of free throws by Runner before an and-one layup by Mireia Mustaros (Barcelona, Spain/Odessa College) at the 3:48 mark put the Aces back in front, 53-52. On the next offensive possession, Runner got her own rebound on a missed three and found Sydney Huber (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mount Vernon), who buried a deep three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Aces up four.

After another layup by Mustaros extended the lead to six, Illinois State fought back before eventually tying the game on a three-pointer with eight seconds left to force overtime.

Evansville regained the lead early in overtime, with Runner beginning the period with a jumper and Norkus going 1-for-2 from the free throw line to put the Aces up three. However, Illinois State scored on consecutive possession to put the Redbirds back up one.

Just as it had been in both prior tournament games, the Aces refused to give in. Norkus gave the Aces the lead back with a pair of free throws before Jelena Savic (Melbourne, Australia/Kurunjang Secondary College) hit the biggest shot of her career, a three-pointer to put the Aces up four. Illinois State was not done quite yet, however, using a lauyup with 16 seconds left to make it a one-point game, but Runner and Norkus combined to go 4-for-4 down the stretch to seal a 75-70 win.

Evansville will take on top-seeded Murray State on Sunday in the MVC Championship Game, seeking their first MVC title and NCAA Tournament berth since 2009. Tip-off against the Racers is set for 1 PM.

EVANSVILLE BASEBALL

ACES EVEN SERIES BEHIND LONGBALLS FROM LONGMEIER AND HAIRE

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Looking to bounce-back from a close loss a day ago, the University of Evansville baseball team put together one of its most complete performances of the season in a 6-4 victory over Xavier on Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.

On the mound, senior right-hander Max Hansmann got the start for the Aces and earned his second win of the year, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while registering seven strikeouts. The Aces went to freshman righty Tanner Graham in relief, who tallied his third save of the season with 3.2 innings of work, allowing just one run and striking-out four Musketeers. Offensively, Evansville was powered by a pair of home runs, the first off the bat of redshirt sophomore Charlie Longmeier and the second from junior Reid Haire. Longmeier’s day was not just limited to power as the designated hitter finished the day a triple short of the cycle, recording three total hits and a pair of RBI.

Solid pitching dominated the first two innings for both sides as Hansmann and Xavier starter Jack Nobe, who recorded a pair of scoreless frames to open the contest. The first bit of offense for either side came from Aces freshman right fielder Benji Kautto. Seeing his first collegiate at-bat after an injury held him out to start the season, Kautto smashed a triple off the wall and proceeded to score off a wild pitch to give the Aces a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

Just a few at-bats later, Longmeier added on to the Evansville advantage, hammering his second home run of the season, this one a two-run no-doubter to right field that handed UE a 3-0 lead after the third.

Hansmann continued to hang zeroes on the board in the fourth and fifth innings as Evansville’s offense again added to its lead in the fiftth frame. Haire got the scoring started for UE with a solo homer to center field, his fourth of the season. The Aces were able to continue to put men on base throughout the fifth when sophomore Ryan Seddon chopped a ball to second base that was bobbled and thrown wide of the bag at first and out of play, allowing both Longmeier and Drew McConnel to score, lifting Evansville’s advantage to 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Xavier was able to do its first damage, scratching across a run on an RBI double by Clay Burdette, but Hansmann limited the pain to just a run.

The Aces again ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Musketeers put a pair of runners on with no outs. With the bases loaded, Hansmann’s valiant outing came to a close after 112 pitches after a run was walked in cutting the Evansville lead to 6-2. Graham relieved Hansmann out of the pen, facing bases loaded with just one out. Graham immediately steadied the ship, getting his first batter to groundout with just one run scoring and striking-out the next batter he faced to get out of the inning with Evansville in front 6-3.

For the second-straight inning, Xavier placed its first two runners on without an out, but again it was Graham who limited the damage, allowing just one run before getting out of the jam.

Despite Evansville’s offense cooling off, the lead proved to be enough for the Aces as Graham limited the Musketeers to just one base-runner over the final two innings as UE evened the weekend series with a 6-4 victory.

Evansville and Xavier will close-out their series with a rubber-match on Sunday at Noon in Cincinnati, Ohio.

VALPO BASEBALL

LOCKWOOD PITCHES WELL, COOPER HOMERS LATE IN ONE-RUN DEFEAT

A quality outing by starting pitcher Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) and a late home run by redshirt junior Thomas Cooper (Brentwood, Tenn. / Ravenwood) were bright spots, but the Valparaiso University baseball team was on the wrong end of a one-run decision, dropping Saturday’s middle game 3-2 at SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill.

How It Happened

SIUE struck first in the opening inning as Ryan Niedzwiedz hit a solo homer to center and later in the inning a lost fly ball in the outfield came back to bite the Beacons as that runner came around to score the second run of the frame.

Center fielder Michael Kuska (Pontiac, Ill. / Pontiac Township) made a nice catch up against the wall to begin the bottom of the second inning, a frame where Lockwood sent down the side in order. Lockwood worked three up, three down again in the third to keep the deficit at two and make it seven straight retired.

Lockwood faced the minimum again in the bottom of the fourth, which ended with an unassisted double play by Case Sullivan (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) on a line drive to shortstop.

The Cougars added a run with a two-out single in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Beacons got on the board in the top of the seventh as redshirt senior George Betevis (Hanover Park, Ill. / Bartlett) doubled to left, then redshirt senior Gavin Bennett (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) ripped a single down the third-base line to make it 3-1.

Cooper launched a long home run to lead off the top of the ninth, slicing the SIUE lead in half at 3-2, but that was as close as the Beacons would come.

Inside the Game

Lockwood allowed three runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out five. He elevated his career strikeout total to 214, three away from cracking the program’s all-time top 10.  Lockwood has logged 268 1/3 career innings, on the cusp of cracking the all-time top 10 in that category as well (needs 274 2/3).

Lockwood has issued only one walk all season against 22 strikeouts. Over his last four starts, he has 19 strikeouts and no walks.

Cooper’s home run was his first of the season and the fifth of his collegiate career.

Valpo was outhit by a narrow 7-6 count, the second straight day the Cougars led the hit column by a single knock.

Valpo fell to 1-3 in one-run games this season and 2-12 in one-run games combined between last year and this year.

Four of Valpo’s six hits went for extra bases.

Neither team issued a walk in the game. This was the second time this season Valpo did not draw a walk and also the second time this season Valpo did not issue a walk.

Cooper and Bennett had two hits apiece, Bennett’s second multi-hit game of the season and Cooper’s third.

Up Next

The Beacons (5-10) will conclude the series at 11 a.m. on Sunday against the Cougars. Note that earlier start time due to the weather forecast. Visit valpoathletics.com for a link to live stats.

MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

MARIAN ADVANCES TO NAIA ROUND OF 16 FOR SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE SEASON

INDIANAPOLIS – For the seventh consecutive season, the Marian women’s basketball team is advancing to the NAIA National Tournament Round of 16, as the Knights won a commanding 70-47 contest on Saturday night against Columbia College in the NAIA Second Round. Marian defended its home floor one final time as they punched a ticket to Sioux City, Iowa, as they head to the Round of 16 with a 31-2 overall record and winners of 14 consecutive games.

As they did on Friday night, Marian got off to a rocky start in the first two minutes of the game, quickly falling behind 5-0 against Columbia. A basket from Abbey McNally settled Marian into the game with a layup, and the team picked up their momentum-shifting swing from Kenna Kirby, as the senior buried a pair of three-pointers as part of a 10-0 run to give Marian the lead. The Knights continued to pour it on after the run captured a 10-5 lead, pushing in front 14-9 by the media stoppage.

The timeout dialed in Marian, as Kirby drained her third triple to ignite a 13-0 Marian sprint. Both McNally sisters contributed to the lead soaring into double figures, and Kirby capped the mark with a jumper, giving Marian a 16-point edge. Columbia would make a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter, sending Marian into the second quarter with a controlling 27-14 lead.

After the big offensive start, Marian turned to its defense in the second quarter, as the Knights dialed up the intensity and made life difficult for the Cougars. Marian allowed eight points total in the quarter, with the defense making up for a less-than-challenging offensive attack that saw the Knights score three points through the first five minutes of the period. After the media timeout, Marian reset its offensive approach and trusted Madisyn Bailey with a clearout to get the scoring back, while a steal and fastbreak layup for Eva Fisher set the tone for the remainder of the half.

Marian went on an 8-0 after Bailey’s layup, and a string of defensive stops held the Cougars off the board for a 2:30 stretch, allowing the Knights to cruise into halftime leading 41-22.

The Cougars would threaten early in the third quarter, matching Marian’s scores as they cut the hold on the game to 15 points. Marian stayed true to its game and maintained a lead as Abbey McNally denied Columbia from inching any further. Madisyn Bailey extended the lead after the second half media timeout with a driving layup and Olivia Faust buried a triple to reclaim a 20-point edge, as Marian got rolling again in the waning moments of the third quarter. Kiley McNally would beat the final buzzer in the third quarter after the team forced a shot clock violation, and carried the Knights into the fourth quarter on top 58-35.

The finish to the third quarter guided Marian’s finishing push, as Kennedy Coleman and Olivia Faust drove the lead to 25 points in the first three minutes of the final stanza. The Knights never led by less than 19 points in the fourth, and saw the starters end the game strong with Abbey McNally making the penultimate field goal before the senior curtain call. Emily Grim would score Marian’s final points, as the Knights were able to dribble out the final 25 seconds of the contest, emphatically protecting their home court in a one-sided 70-47 victory over Columbia.

Marian forced 24 turnovers in their win compared to eight committed, with the Knights not making an error until 15 minutes of play had elapsed. The team shot 50 percent from three-point land, with four of the six makes coming from Kenna Kirby, who finished the game with 14 points. Abbey McNally led the Knights in scoring with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Kiley McNally scored 10 points to go with six rebounds. Madisyn Bailey had a balanced game with nine points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

The Knights win stamped their ticket for Sioux City, Iowa, where they will play 12-seed Shawnee State University in the Round of 16. Marian’s first game in Iowa will be on Friday, March 20, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern in the Tyson Events Center. More info on the game will come early next week.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1869    The Cincinnati Red Stockings will become the sports first professional team when the National Association of Base Ball Players NABBP permits compensated players to participate this season English-born Harry Wright puts together a ten-man team all on salary through November that posts a 57-0 record marking the only perfect season in professional baseball history.

1945    Former minor leaguer Bert Shepard, who had his right leg amputated after the Germans gunned down his fighter plane east of Hamburg on his 34th mission as a WW II P-38 fighter pilot, begins a successful tryout with the Senators. Although the southpaw will pitch in only one game for Washington, the retired Army Air Force pilot hurls an impressive 5⅓ innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox in August, striking out the first batter he faces and giving up just three hits.

1960    The floundering Southern Association announces the New Orleans Pelicans, for the first time since 1901, will not be part of the Double-A circuit. The Little Rock Travelers, after a two-year absence, rejoins the league, replacing the Crescent City club, playing two seasons before the loop ceases operations after the 1961 campaign.

1971    Bernice Gera files a civil rights suit against Major League Baseball when her contract to umpire in the New York-Penn League becomes void after six days without an explanation. In an eventual landmark 5-2 decision, the New York Court of Appeals will uphold a prior court’s ruling, agreeing with the 39-year-old housewife’s contention that the MLB unlawfully discriminated against her.

1974    In Yuma (AZ), Ron Bryant, a 24-game winner for the Giants last year, is hurt in a pool accident during spring training. The promising southpaw’s record will drop to 3-15 this season, and the Redlands, California native’s career will end in 1975 after a brief 0-1 stint with St. Louis.

1975    The Dodgers sign their once arch-nemesis, Juan Marichal, as a free agent. After two regular-season starts, lasting six innings and giving up nine runs, the former Giants’ superstar and future Hall of Famer will retire in mid-April.

1977    The A’s send Phil Garner, Chris Batton, and Tommy Helms to the Pirates for Tony Armas, Mitchell Page, and four pitchers, including Doc Medich and Dave Giusti. Pittsburgh’s acquisition of infielder Phil Garner, the key player in the nine-player spring training swap, will move a very disappointed Bill Robinson back into a utility role after he worked diligently to get ready to be the team’s everyday third baseman.

1999    The Yankees name Don Zimmer as the club’s interim manager while Joe Torre receives prostate cancer treatments. During his managerial stints with San Diego, Boston, Texas, and Chicago, the bench coach compiled an 885-858 (.508) record.

2000    Six Red Sox pitchers combine for a perfect game in a spring training contest, beating the Blue Jays in Fort Myers, 5-0. Boston starter Pedro Martinez pitched the first three innings, and Fernando De La Cruz tossed the next two frames, with Dan Smith, Rheal Cormier, Rich Garces, and Rod Beck all going one inning apiece.

2008    In front of 12,224 fans, a near-sellout at the new Olympic venue in Beijing, the Dodgers and the Padres played to a 3-3 tie in the first major league game ever played in mainland China. In the seventh inning, the crowd hears “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” but without knowing the lyrics, they listen without singing.

2008    The Pirates sign Ian Snell (9-12, 3.76) to a three-year deal reported to be worth $8 million, five days after unilaterally renewing his contract for the upcoming season. The 26-year-old right-hander, eligible for salary arbitration after the 2009 season, has compiled a 24-26 record with the struggling ball club over the past three seasons.

2012    Baseball-Reference.com leaves a blank space next to 2011 on its National League MVP list instead of identifying Ryan Braun as the award’s winner. The Brewers outfielder, who received a 50-game suspension scheduled for the start of the 2012 season, became the first player to successfully challenge a drug test result when an arbitration panel overturned the ruling due to the improper handling of the specimen taken last Fall.

2014    The Yankees begin a two-game spring training series against the Marlins at Rod Carew Stadium in Panama to honor Mariano Riveras legacy a native of the nearby fishing village of Puerto Caimito. The contests are the first to be played in the Isthmus Nation by major league teams since the Bronx Bombers faced the Dodgers in exhibition games in 1947.
