GOLF
HOME FAVORITE JEENO THITIKUL SEIZES LEAD IN THAILAND
Jeeno Thitikul ended the third round of the Honda LPGA Thailand with a flourish on Saturday, recording birdies on the final three holes to grab a two-stroke lead.
The World No. 1, playing in front a cheering home-country crowd, mixed seven birdies and a bogey to finish with a 66 and move to a 20-under196 for the tournament.
“I think [the] driver has been really good for the past few days,” said Thitikul, who opened with rounds of 67 and 63 at the Siam Country Club Old Course in Pattaya.”Keep gaining confidence.
“And also the irons-wise, better than I expected, and also I think I rolling the putts kind of well this past three days as well.”
Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea stands second on the leaderboard after her round of 65 moved her to 18-under for the tournament. She carded nine birdies, including three on the final four holes, to offset her two bogeys on the round.
At 17-under and three strokes back are Allisen Corpuz (67 on Saturday), Chizzy Iwai of Japan (68) and second-round leader Somi Lee (72) of South Korea.
New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, who has 23 LPGA Tour wins, is another shot back at 16-under after her round of 69.
Thitikul, who turned 23 on Friday, will have an edge on Sunday with a large crowd firmly on her side.
“Every time I come to Honda, it’s always getting bigger, bigger — all the fans,” she said. Yeah, today, Saturday, all the kids come off from school and also all the parents and everyone off from the work. They just came a long way to watch us play.
“It’s really motivating and inspiring that I really want to play good in front of them.”
And there’s one fan she especially wants to please: her mother, who rarely watches her play in person.
“My mom wouldn’t come for the whole year. This is only like event that she going to came out and watch me play, so it’s mean a lot to me,” she said. “You know, like my mom is not really coming out, so playing in front of her and then I think if she saw so many people cheering for me and grabbing for me she would be so proud.”
Corpuz, a Hawaii native, is seeking a second career victory. She won the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach and is prepared to challenge Thitikul and the rest of the leaderboard.
“I’m really not a leaderboard checker but I love just being in contention and having the opportunity it throw up a nice Sunday round,” Corpuz said. “I’m really excited for it.”
MARCO PENGE, JACOB BRIDGEMAN SHARE LEAD AT GENESIS INVITATIONAL
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — England’s Marco Penge turned a busy day into a share of the lead at the midway point of the Genesis Invitational on Friday by reaching 12-under par at Riviera Country Club.
Forced to play 27 holes after he resumed his first round early Friday morning, Penge shot 9 under on the day and delivered a 7-under 64 during his second round to join Jacob Bridgeman (64) atop the leaderboard.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (65) was alone in third place at 11 under, while Australia’s Adam Scott (63) and Xander Schauffele (65) were tied for fourth at 9 under. Scott needed a birdie at the par-4 closing hole to tie the course record of 61 but finished with a bogey.
A total of 30 players still needed to complete their first round Friday morning. They were on the course during the first round Thursday when play was halted because of darkness following a three-hour rain delay,
While Bridgeman finished his first round Friday, Penge’s full 27-hold day included 11 birdies and two bogeys. Bridgeman started his second round with an eagle 3 at the first hole, then finished with three consecutive birdies to catch Penge.
“I putted it really well and I hit my driver great,” said Bridgeman, a South Carolina native who is holding his own on West Coast Poa annua greens. “The driver was a struggle the last couple weeks. So I drove it nicely, and then the putter worked out for me.”
After winning three times on the DP World Tour last season, Penge is playing his fourth event on the PGA Tour this season and has made the cut in consecutive signature events. He can note one major difference when it comes to playing in the United States.
“Going for lunch on Tuesday and standing in the queue behind Tiger Woods is pretty cool,” Penge said of the tournament host and 15-time major winner. “You know, (it’s) just being in the presence of players that I have so much respect for, players that I’ve watched growing up, players I idolize.”
McIlroy had three birdies on his front nine Friday before an eagle 3 at No. 11 and a birdie at 17 to finish one shot off the pace. Scott had a pair of eagles at Nos. 1 and 11. He was 5 under on a five-hole stretch from Nos. 9-13.
“I’ve been feeling like I’ve had a lot of good golf since last summer and got absolutely no results thanks to average putting,” said Scott, who won at Riviera in 2020. “The standard’s incredibly high out here week in and week out and average putting just isn’t going to get it done. So nice to see myself kind of up on the first page of a leaderboard.”
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (68) made a 7-foot par putt at 18 to make the cut on the number at even par. It is his 68th consecutive made cut.
“It was nice to get out this morning on some fresh greens and hole some putts and do what I needed to do in order to get to the weekend,” Scheffler said.
Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg (68), the defending champion, is tied for 25th place at 2 under.
The Genesis Invitational is making its return to Riviera after it was played in the San Diego area at Torrey Pines last season following a destructive wildfire that destroyed much of the neighborhood just north of the golf course in January of last year.

INDIANA PACERS
GAME REWIND: PACERS 118, WIZARDS 131
For the second straight night, the Pacers and Wizards met on Friday in Washington, D.C., and for the second straight game, the Wizards (16-39) used a strong finish to beat the Pacers (15-42), coming away with a 131-118 victory.
The Pacers led by as many as 15 points in the first half and by 11 at halftime. But the Wizards rallied to tie the game entering the fourth quarter and outscored Indiana 39-26 in the final frame.
Jay Huff led Indiana with 22 points in the loss in just 16 minutes, going 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Quenton Jackson added 21 points off the bench on 8-of-13 shooting.
But eight players scored in double figures for Washington, with Alondes Williams scoring 25 points and pulling down 10 rebounds off the bench in just his 11th career game and second as a Wizard. Fellow reserve Sharife Cooper added 18 points as Washington amassed 84 bench points in the victory.
Huff buried two 3-pointers and scored nine points as Indiana jumped out to an early 17-6 lead on Friday. The visitors took a 27-22 lead into the second quarter.
Huff stayed hot in the ensuing frame, knocking down three more threes in the first 4:12 of the second quarter — including two on back-to-back possessions — to stretch the Pacers’ lead to 49-38.
The Pacers went 12-for-26 (46.2 percent) from 3-point range in the first half, while Washington made just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) of its attempts from beyond the arc. That 30-point advantage from long distance propelled the Blue & Gold to a halftime lead, as the Pacers led by as many as 15 points in the first half and took a 68-57 advantage into the intermission.
The Wizards gradually chipped away at that margin in the third quarter, eventually trimming Indiana’s lead to 80-79 with 5:12 remaining in the frame. Baskets from Kobe Brown and Jackson extended the Pacers’ lead to five points before Washington reeled off seven unanswered points, taking its first lead of the night on Anthony Gill’s layup with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
Two free throws from Brown tied the game at 86, and the game remained knotted at 92 entering the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded the lead seven times over the first three minutes of the final frame before the Wizards put together an 8-0 run to surge ahead. The Pacers never managed to get back within one possession of the lead the rest of the way, with the hosts ultimately pulling away down the stretch for a double-digit victory.
Micah Potter had 18 points off the bench while going 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Jarace Walker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Brown and Taelon Peter each tallied 12 points off the bench.
Tristan Vukcevic had 14 points and eight rebounds for Washington, Tre Johnson added 14 points, and Bilal Coulibaly scored 13.
The Pacers were without eight players on Friday and had just nine active players. All-Star forward Pascal Siakam missed his second straight game due to left hamstring injury management and was joined on the sidelines by starters Aaron Nesmith (right ankle sprain) and Andrew Nembhard (lower back injury management). 7-foot center Ivica Zubac has yet to make his Pacers debut after being acquired from the Clippers at the trade deadline as he manages a left ankle sprain.
Indiana will now head home to tip off a four-game homestand on Sunday against Dallas. After that homestand, the Pacers head to the West Coast for a four-game road trip.
Inside the Numbers
Huff recorded the seventh 20-point game of his career and his fifth this season as a Pacer. His five 3-pointers matched his career high.
Jackson surpassed 20 points for the fifth time in his career and the third time this season.
Walker recorded his second double-double in as many nights and his third in his last eight games.
Rookie guard Kam Jones had just four points on 2-of-9 shooting but dished out a career-best 11 assists in 39 minutes.
The Pacers lost despite outscoring Washington by 36 points from 3-point range. Indiana was 18-for-49 (36.7 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Wizards were just 6-for-29 (20.7 percent).
Washington’s reserves outscored Indiana’s bench 84-63. The Pacers’ 63 bench points were two shy of their season high, but Washington’s reserves scored 15 points more than any other second unit has amassed against Indiana this season.
After turning the ball over 23 times in Thursday’s loss, the Pacers had 21 more turnovers on Friday, which the Wizards converted into 30 points on the other end. Indiana did force 18 Wizards turnovers after only creating 10 giveaways on Thursday.
The Pacers held Washington to just 22 points in the first quarter, but the Wizards scored 35 points or more in each of the next three frames. Washington outscored Indiana 74-50 in the second half.

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL
INDIANA DEFEATED AT NO. 7/7 PURDUE
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Darian DeVries squatted in front of the Mackey Arena scorers’ table, the game clocking taking bites out of the second half, scanning for a solution to a big Purdue problem.
On Friday night, in front of 14,000-plus raucous Boiler fans, it never came.
A brutal road swing against two of the nation’s best teams ended with a 93-64 loss, and Darian DeVries, who had coached the Hoosiers (17-10 overall, 8-8 in the Big Ten) to a 72-67 win over the Boilers (22-5, 12-4) in late January, couldn’t orchestrate a repeat.
“Nights like these are hard,” Darian DeVries said. “Everybody knows how good Purdue is. When they’re playing at a level like this, it makes it incredibly challenging.”
IU, which had lost 71-51 at top-10 Illinois last Sunday, fell behind by 29 points early against the seventh-ranked Boilers in the second half and never recovered.
“They did everything they needed to do to put us in tough spots,” Darian DeVries said. “We could never get them under control.”
Added Purdue coach Matt Painter: “We were able to set the tone. Our guys did a good job. They were ready to play. Defensively, we were consistent.”
Guard Lamar Wilkerson scored 18 of his IU-leading 20 points in the second half. Forward Tucker DeVries added 11 points. Forward Reed Bailey had 10 points. Guard Tayton Conerway came off the bench for 12 points and seven assists.
“He gave us some good minutes,” Darian DeVries said of Conerway. “He did a good job getting downhill, getting some paint touches and getting to the rim. He gave us a burst there.”
IU has three straight home games against Northwestern on Tuesday, then No. 15/15 Michigan State on March 1, and Minnesota on March 4 before ending the regular season at Ohio State on March 7.
“It’s difficult,” forward Tucker DeVries said, “but it’s important for us to understand we have four big games coming up down the stretch. We’re playing for a lot right now.
“There’s not much we can do about this game, but we can learn from it. Use this to get ready for these next four games which are massive for us and make that NCAA Tournament. We’ve certainly put ourselves in position to have meaningful games coming down the stretch.”
Purdue was led by guard Braden Smith’s 15 points and eight assists. Forward Trey Kaufman-Renn had 20 points. Guard Fletcher Loyer had 18. The Boilers had a 30-15 rebounding advantage.
Purdue, coming off a 91-80 Tuesday home loss to No. 1 Michigan, wanted no part of a two-game Mackey Arena losing streak. They opened with 3-point baskets from Smith and Loyer (off a Smith assist). Tucker DeVries countered with a 3-pointer. The Boilers countered back with a pair of baskets for a 10-3 lead. Tucker DeVries responded with his second 3-pointer.
Purdue built a series of seven-point leads, then extended it to 19-10 with nine minutes. Baskets by Tucker DeVries and forward Sam Alexis kept the Hoosiers within range.
A three-point play from Kaufman-Renn pushed the Boilers ahead 26-14.
Bailey got free for a couple of dunks and finished the half with eight points, as did Tucker DeVries, but the Hoosiers trailed at halftime, 46-29.
Purdue made 12-of-15 free throws in the first 20 minutes. IU was 4-for-6. The Boilers shot 63 percent from the field. The Hoosiers were at 50 percent.
IU needed a strong second-half start and got a Tucker DeVries 3-pointer, but consecutive Loyer 3-pointers made it 54-32 in less than three minutes and forced an IU timeout. Guard Connor Enright capitalized with a 3-pointer. Wilkerson followed with his scoring surge, but it wasn’t nearly enough against the nation’s second-most efficient offense according to NCAA statistics.
“Our guys will be focused and ready to go on Tuesday,” Darian DeVries said. “They have been all year.
“We played two really good teams on the road. We’re disappointed that we weren’t more competitive to make it come down the stretch. We have to let that go and beat Northwestern.
“This is a Northwestern team that has put up a good fight. We have to take advantage of being at home. That’s our main priority.”

PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL
#7 PURDUE ROLLS PAST IN-STATE RIVAL INDIANA AT MACKEY ARENA
[7] PURDUE 93, INDIANA 64 (Postgame Notes)
7-ranked Purdue improved to 22-5 overall and 12-4 in the Big Ten Conference with a 93-64 win over rival Indiana at Mackey Arena on Friday night.
The 29-point margin was Purdue’s largest against Indiana since a 120-76 win over the Hoosiers on March 8, 1969. It is the eighth-largest margin of victory among Purdue’s 129 victories over Indiana and the third-largest since the 1912-13 season.
Purdue has now won at least 12 Big Ten Conference games for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons – the most in the Big Ten by four seasons (Wisconsin – 7 years of 12+ wins in 12 seasons).
Purdue is 17-6 against Indiana in its last 23 meetings since the 2013-14 season. Indiana hasn’t reached 80 points in any of the 23 meetings.
Purdue shot a season-high 64.7 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent in the second half. Purdue’s 64.7 percent is the highest in school history against Indiana.
It is also the highest percentage in a game during the Matt Painter era, as well as the highest percentage against Indiana since 2000.
Purdue had 24 assists against seven turnovers.
Purdue averaged 1.55 points per possession, the fifth-highest total in school history. Purdue scored on 21 of its 29 second-half possession.
When Purdue scores 80 or more points and shoots over 50.0 percent from the field under Matt Painter, Purdue is 134-5.
Purdue has won 134 straight games when scoring 90 or more points, dating to Nov. 1987.
Purdue had four players with 15 points for the second time this season (Penn State). Previously, it had been since Feb. 2020, to have four players with 15 or more points.
Purdue tied a season-high with 25 free throw attempts. Purdue has shot at least 20 free throws in six straight games.
Trey Kaufman-Renn scored at least 20 points for the second straight game, tallying 20 points (8-of-10 FGs) with six rebounds and five assists. He was plus-33 in 26 minutes.
Fletcher Loyer scored 18 points on 100 percent efficiency by going 5-of-5 from the field, 4-of-4 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. It’s the seventh-most points in school history on 100 percent efficiency.
In eight games against Indiana, Fletcher Loyer went 17-of-33 (.515) from 3-point range. Purdue is 23-0 during Loyer’s career when he makes four or more 3-pointers in a game.
Omer Mayer scored a career-high 18 points with two assists, going 6-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from long range. Mayer is now shooting 19-of-37 (.514) from 3-point range over the last 14 games.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 20 points and Braden Smith added 15 points and eight assists Friday night, helping No. 7 Purdue produce a historic rout over rival Indiana 93-64 to earn a split in this season’s series.
The Boilermakers emphatically ended their two-game losing streak against the Hoosiers by producing their highest point total in the series since scoring 94 points in 1998. It also was their largest victory margin in the series since a 44-point shellacking in 1969.
Fletcher Loyer and Omer Mayer each scored 18 points, with Loyer going 5 of 5 from the field, making four of his 3-pointers and all four free throws in what could be the Indiana finale for Purdue’s three senior starters — Kaufman-Renn, Smith and Loyer. The victory came three days after Purdue (22-5, 12-4 Big Ten) lost at home to top-ranked Michigan.
Lamar Wilkerson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half to lead Indiana (17-10, 9-7), which lost its second straight to a top-10 team. Tayton Conerway had 12 points and seven assists, while Tucker DeVries added 11 points on a night Indiana’s offense never got in sync and whose post players struggled against the Boilermakers size, all while battling foul trouble.
Purdue took control quickly, using an 11-4 spurt to take a commanding 26-14 lead. The Boilermakers extended the margin to 46-29 when Nick Dorn’s half-closing 3-ponter was erased after a replay review determined the shot came after time expired.
Kaufman-Renn and Loyer opened the second half with Purdue’s first three baskets to make it 54-32 with 17:41 to go, and the Hoosiers never recovered as the Boilermakers led wire to wire.
