FALCONS’ MORRIS STILL SEEKING WAYS TO ‘MIMIC’ THE RAMS’ WINNING FORMULA ENTERING MONDAY NIGHT GAME
ATLANTA (AP) — Raheem Morris is trying to coach the Atlanta Falcons to play like the Los Angeles Rams.
The records show Morris has found the Rams’ success is difficult to duplicate.
Coach Sean McVay’s Rams (11-4) will try to improve their playoff position when they face the Falcons (6-9) on Monday night. Los Angeles is tied with San Francisco for second place in the tough NFC West while Atlanta playoff drought has been extended to eight seasons.
Morris was the Rams’ defensive coordinator under McVay from 2021-23. Morris has five assistant coaches, including offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who also served on McVay’s staff.
“We definitely mimic and mock a lot of things that they do and want to continue to do that,” Morris said of the Rams.
The Falcons’ lost season could endanger the coaching future of Morris, who is 14-18 in his two years.
Back-to-back wins over Tampa Bay and Arizona show players haven’t quit on Morris. A win over the Rams could make a stronger case for Morris to be given a third season in Atlanta.
The Rams are trying to rebound from a 38-37 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Los Angeles leads the NFL in scoring and total offense. Matthew Stafford tops the league in touchdown passes (40), yards passing (4,179) and passer rating (112.1). Puka Nacua’s 114 receptions are the most in the NFL.
Meanwhile, the Falcons have won three of five games with Kirk Cousins at quarterback since losing Michael Penix Jr. to a season-ending knee injury. Bijan Robinson leads the league in scrimmage yards.
Morris acknowledged there is “definitely a balance” in choosing when to try to follow the Rams’ model.
“You steal what you steal from the Rams and you move on and you form your own identity and you form your own stuff within your own building,” Morris said. “But it takes time to do those things with everybody.”
Draft incentive
The Rams have more on the line than just improving their playoff position. They also can improve their 2026 first-round NFL draft pick by beating the Falcons.
The Falcons traded their 2026 first-rounder to the Rams in this year’s draft in order to select edge rusher James Pearce Jr. at No. 26 overall. Entering this week’s games, that trade gives the Rams the No. 11 overall pick. The Rams could move into the top 10 by beating the Falcons.
The Falcons drafted Pearce after taking another edge rusher, Jalon Walker, at No. 15 overall. Pearce and Walker lead NFL rookies in sacks with 8 1/2 and 5 1/2, respectively. The Falcons rank second in the league with 50 sacks after ranking next to last last season with 31.
The Falcons also acquired a third-round pick used for safety Xavier Watts in last year’s trade with the Rams. Watts has three interceptions to tie for the lead among NFL rookies. Morris says the Falcons are still happy with the trade.
“So, us getting X (Watts) in the third and James Pearce joining for a first-round pick, sign me up,” Morris said.
McVay said this week the possible impact on the 2026 first-round pick “doesn’t have any effect on our approach to this game.”
Puka producing
The Rams have mostly run their passing offense through one receiver under McVay. Nacua is taking that emphasis to levels not seen since Cooper Kupp’s triple crown season in 2021.
Nacua is averaging 8.14 receptions on 10.36 targets per game. He has 28 catches for 573 yards and four touchdowns the last three contests.
Nacua’s big plays have increased since Davante Adams aggravated a hamstring injury against Detroit on Dec. 14.
“Certain games present more opportunities than others,” Stafford said. “We had a lot of plays and a lot of snaps the last couple of games, which just by sheer volume you’re going to have more attempts at it. We were able to connect on some of those and make some big plays, but same stuff he’s always done.”
Penix update
Morris said Penix is rehabbing at the team’s practice facility following surgery to repair a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
When asked if he has a timeline on Penix’s recovery schedule, Morris said: “Nothing I really want to share, to be honest. … I would say as far as we know, we’re on schedule, as far as everything that’s going on right now.”
Cool opportunity
Robinson said preparing for the Rams feels different “just because the familiarity with everybody over there.”
“It’s a cool opportunity,” Robinson said. “We’re playing arguably the best team in football. For our guys to go shoot their shot and cut it loose on Monday night against a great opponent, I think is a cool challenge.”
Holiday commute
The Rams left their facility in the San Fernando Valley to practice at SoFi Stadium this week because of heavy rain and gusty winds throughout Southern California. On Wednesday, that had them traveling on the 405 freeway past Los Angeles International Airport, one of the more notorious stretches of holiday traffic in town.
“It was not too bad on the way down here, though,” Stafford said. “The bus got here in about 45, 50 minutes, so we’ll take it.”
DAK PRESCOTT WANTS TO PLAY FOR .500 FINISH IN COWBOYS’ THIRD GAME WITHOUT PLAYOFF HOPES
Dak Prescott seemed a bit less sure about playing in a meaningless season finale than he did about a Christmas Day game that also had no connection to the playoffs.
Until the question of the final record for the Dallas Cowboys came up. The star quarterback was much more certain then.
Dallas (7-8-1) kept alive its chance to avoid a losing season with a 30-23 Christmas victory at Washington. The Cowboys will be back on the road to finish the season against the New York Giants on Jan. 3 or 4.
“Big difference,” Prescott said when asked about 8-8-1 vs. 7-9-1. “A lot of pride. To the point, I want to play. Any season of me being out there, I’ve never had, in all my life career, a season under .500. So that tie is going to come into play really well.”
Prescott and his teammates probably don’t know it’s been 23 years since the Cowboys had consecutive losing seasons. Dallas had three in a row from 2000-02 in the only three seasons of Dave Campo’s head coaching career.
A year ago, Prescott missed the final nine games with a torn hamstring as the Cowboys finished 7-10 in coach Mike McCarthy’s last season. Brian Schottenheimer, a first-year head coach after a quarter-century as an NFL assistant, certainly has the incentive to beat the Giants.
The tricky part is that Prescott endured a season-high six sacks against the Commanders. Each time the franchise QB is dragged down under these circumstances, collective breaths are held in team owner Jerry Jones’ suite and beyond.
“Of course I don’t want to get him hit six times,” Schottenheimer said. “We also ran 80-something plays. I thought he did a great job with his legs, but I don’t want Dak to get hit like that. But I think we know how to do it at a higher level than we did tonight.”
Prescott cut a reporter short early in the week on the question of playing against the Commanders, in part because it was Christmas. He wasn’t nearly as emphatic after the game.
“I love this game. I love any opportunity that I get to play it,” Prescott said. “I understand the reasons why maybe not, and if that’s the approach with that, I’ll handle that then.”
What’s working
Malik Davis’ first career 100-yard game led to the first 200-yard rushing game of the season for the Cowboys. Dallas finished with 211 yards despite lead RB Javonte Williams finally relenting in the second half after trying to play through a stinger.
Davis finished with 103 yards on 20 carries — twice his previous career high — while Williams had 54 yards rushing and his 11th TD. Davis had 308 career yards in 24 games before facing the Commanders, and 43 of those came on a touchdown on Thanksgiving against Kansas City.
What needs help
Second-half touchdowns have disappeared in Schottenheimer’s offense. The Cowboys haven’t reached the end zone after halftime since a 44-30 loss to Detroit on Dec. 4. They’ve been inside the 20 only three times in those three halves.
Stock up
KaVontae Turpin isn’t having much of an encore to his 2024 All-Pro season as a kick returner. But an 86-yard touchdown catch that was the NFL’s longest on Christmas offered a reminder of the value of the diminutive receiver’s speed.
Stock down
LB Logan Wilson, a midseason trade acquisition, was active but didn’t play. Kenneth Murray appears to be the clear choice over him, but he had no solo tackles and was pinned inside on rookie RB Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt’s 72-yard scoring run.
Injuries
TE Jake Ferguson was out of the game for good with a calf injury not long after a nifty touchdown catch when he tipped the pass to himself. … The Cowboys have had a rash of concussions, and the latest is rookie CB Shavon Revel.
Key number
87 — Plays for the Cowboys against Washington, their most in a game since 2018. Among the other six games with more than 87 plays, none was more recent than 1985.
Up next
The Cowboys and Giants both finished 6-10 in 2020 after New York’s 23-19 victory in the finale. Believe it or not, both teams still had a chance to catch Washington going into the game. Washington won the NFC East at 7-9 with a victory at Philadelphia that night. Prescott missed the final 11 games after the gruesome lower leg injury sustained against the Giants.
ROOKIE QBS FACE OFF AS SAINTS VISIT THE TITANS IN THEIR HOME FINALE

Against the spread: Saints 7-8, Titans 7-8.
Series record: Titans lead 9-7-1.
Last meeting: Saints beat Titans 16-15 in New Orleans on Sept. 10, 2023.
Last week: Saints beat Jets 29-6; Titans beat the Chiefs 26-9.
Saints offense: overall (26), rush (30), pass (19), scoring (29).

Titans defense: overall (20), rush (18), pass (21), scoring (T-26).
Turnover differential: Saints minus-3; Titans minus-4.
Saints player to watch
Receiver Chris Olave’s 10 catches for 148 yards and two TDs against the Jets last week increased his season totals to 92 catches for 1,044 yards and eight TDs — all career highs.
Titans player to watch
QB Cam Ward. The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft has started a franchise-record 15 games as a rookie. He is coming off his best back-to-back games by passer rating with a 122.3 rating last week as he completed a career-best 75% of his passes. He has been intercepted only once over the past seven games with eight TDs in that span.
Key matchup
The Saints’ pass rush against an improved Titans’ pass protection. Ward is no longer the NFL’s most-sacked quarterback, and he has been sacked three times combined over the past three games. New Orleans ranks 12th with 37 sacks.
Key injuries
Saints: Defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (knee) and tight end Foster Moreau (ankle) both will likely be out for at least one game. Alvin Kamara (knee and ankle) has missed the past four games and missed more practice time this week. Guard Cesar Ruiz (ankle) also missed practice Wednesday.
Titans: LB Cedric Gray, their leading tackler, cleared concussion protocol and will be back after missing last week. TE Gunnar Helm (toe) will play. CB Marcus Harris (knee), WR Bryce Oliver (knee) and OLB Femi Oladejo (fibula) are all out.
Series notes
The previous two games between these NFC and AFC teams have been decided by a combined three points with the home team winning each time. The Titans won 23-21 in Nashville in 2021, while the Saints won 16-15 in the 2023 season opener in New Orleans.
Stats and stuff
The Saints have won three straight with rookie QB Tyler Shough 4-3 since taking over as the starter. … Shough threw for 308 yards and a TD pass last week. … QB Taysom Hill threw a 38-yard TD pass, ran for 42 yards and had 36 yards receiving last week. He is the first player in the Super Bowl era and fourth all time with at least 1,000 yards passing, 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving for his career. … RB Alvin Kamara needs 52 yards receiving to become the fifth player all time with 5,000 yards rushing and 5,000 yards receiving for his career. … TE Juwan Johnson had 89 yards receiving last week. … DE Chase Young had a sack and recovered a fumble last week. … DE Cameron Jordan had two sacks last week. … DT Nathan Shepherd had a sack and his first career forced fumble last week. … CB Alontae Taylor had seven tackles and a sack last week. … Rookie S Jonas Sanker had his second career interception last week. … The Titans’ next win will be the franchise’s 500th all time, including the postseason. … Ward leads all rookies with 2,866 yards passing and is tied for the most TD passes with 13. Ward has thrown two TD passes in the past three games. … RB Tyjae Spears had a team-high 105 yards from scrimmage last week with a rushing TD. … RB Tony Pollard has the NFL’s longest active streak of 100-yard rushing games at three straight. … WR Elic Ayomanor had a career-high 58 yards receiving last week. He and Chimere Dike are the only rookie teammates with at least 350 yards receiving and two or more TD catches. … Four-time Pro Bowl DT Jeffery Simmons is tied for sixth in the NFL with 16 tackles for loss and had his first career safety last week. … LB James Williams had a team-high nine tackles and his first career sack last week.
Fantasy tip
Pollard. The veteran has put together three consecutive 100-yard rushing performances for the first time in his career with Tennessee leaning on the run over the past month. The Saints are giving up 122.6 rushing yards a game.
GIANTS, RAIDERS TAKE NFL’S WORST RECORDS INTO MATCHUP
New York Giants (2-13) at Las Vegas (2-13)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. EST, CBS.
BetMGM NFL Odds: Raiders by 1½.
Against the spread: Giants 6-8-1, Raiders 6-9.
Series record: Raiders lead 9-6.
Last meeting: Raiders beat Giants 30-6 on Nov. 5, 2023, at Las Vegas.
Last week: Giants lost to the Vikings 16-13; Raiders lost to the Texans 23-21.
Giants offense: overall (17), rush (7), pass (20), scoring (23).
Giants defense: overall (29), rush (31), pass (20), scoring (28).
Raiders offense: overall (32), rush (32), pass (29), scoring (32).
Raiders defense: overall (15), rush (17), pass (17), scoring (25).
Turnover differential: Giants minus-5; Raiders minus-5.
Giants player to watch
LB Brian Burns has been their best player all season, and he’s the key to the pass rush making an impact, even with Kayvon Thibodeaux on injured reserve. Burns has a career-high 15 sacks, second in the NFL to only record-chasing Myles Garrett, and has shown no signs of slowing down.
Raiders player to watch
QB Geno Smith. He is tied for the league high in interceptions with 15, but over the past eight games has five picks to go with 13 touchdown passes. If he produces similar numbers over the final two games, the Raiders have a good chance to win both weeks.
Key matchup
Giants offensive line vs. Raiders defensive front. New York’s line has struggled recently because of injuries and absences to protect QB Jaxson Dart. Maxx Crosby and the Raiders defensive front is capable of disrupting opposing offenses, and the game’s outcome could be decided on how well the Giants block those defenders to give Dart time to throw as well as establish an effective running game.
Key injuries
Giants: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), C John Michael Schmitz (hand) and CB Cor’Dale Flott all are uncertain to play after getting hurt last weekend. … EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux is out for the rest of the season after going on IR because of a lingering shoulder issue.
Raiders: LT Kolton Miller (ankle) is practicing again this week, but whether he plays is yet to be decided. … TE Brock Bowers (knee) and S Jeremy Chinn (back) were placed on season-ending injured reserve on Wednesday.
Series notes
The teams have alternated winning the past four matchups. … This is the Giants’ second trip to Las Vegas in three years. The Raiders won the previous meeting. … Be it Las Vegas, Oakland or Los Angeles, the Raiders are 6-2 at home in this series.
Stats and stuff
The Giants and Raiders have each lost nine in a row. … This is the fourth time the teams with the two outright worst records have met in the final two weeks, according to Sportradar. The previous time occurred in 1981 between the 1-14 Baltimore Colts and 2-13 New England Patriots. … New York is 0-5 since Mike Kafka took over as interim coach following the firing of Brian Daboll. … Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart was 7 of 13 for 33 yards in the loss to Minnesota. All are his lowest totals among his first 10 starts in the league. His interception went off the hands of Theo Johnson. … Dart was sacked five times, which made the team’s net yards passing just 13. … Dart has thrown for three touchdowns and been picked off twice in three games since returning from concussion protocol. … WR Wan’Dale Robinson is 99 yards away from reaching 1,000 in a season for the first time in his four-year pro career. … DT Dexter Lawrence had one tackle for loss and two penalties on 52 snaps against the Vikings. … Rookie LB Abdul Carter’s offside penalty last week negated what would have been a 96-yard pick-6 by Jevon Holland. … The 16 points Minnesota scored were the fewest the Giants have allowed this season, and the defense produced their only touchdown on Burns’ strip-sack of J.J. McCarthy that Tyler Nubin returned 27 yards to the end zone. … The Raiders have a point differential of minus-169, worst in the NFL. … DE Maxx Crosby’s five straight Pro Bowl selections is second in Raiders history to P Ray Guy’s six in a row. … RB Ashton Jeanty is one of five rookies with at least five rushing and five receiving touchdowns and just the second since 1965. … Las Vegas has committed 35 offensive penalties, second fewest in the league. The Los Angeles Chargers have committed 30. … The Raiders have held opponents to zero or negative yards on 93 rushing plays, best in the league. Brock Bowers has 176 receptions, the highest number for any tight end through his first 29 games. His 1,874 yards receiving are third, behind Pro Football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka (1,992) and Kellen Winslow (1,920). … A victory would give Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll 173 for his career, which would move him into a tie for 16th with Jeff Fisher. Carroll is currently tied with Bill Parcells.
Fantasy tip
RB Ashton Jeanty is coming off the best game of his rookie season with 128 yards rushing, a 51-yard touchdown run and 60-yard TD catch. Given the Giants’ defense is second to last against the run, this may be an opportunity for him to build on that performance.
EAGLES HAVE WON 3 STRAIGHT AGAINST BILLS IN MATCHUP OF PLAYOFF-BOUND TEAMS
Philadelphia (10-5) at Buffalo (11-4)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. EST, Fox.
BetMGM NFL odds: Bills by 2.
Against the spread: Eagles 9-6; Bills 7-8.
Series record: Eagles lead 9-6.
Last meeting: Eagles won 34-31 OT on Nov. 26, 2023, at Philadelphia.
Last week: Eagles beat Commanders 29-18; Bills beat Browns 23-20.
Eagles offense: overall (22), rush (15), pass (23), scoring (16t)
Eagles defense: overall (12), rush (21), pass (7), scoring (3)
Bills offense: overall (4), rush (1), pass (18), scoring (4).
Bills defense: overall (11), rush (30), pass (2), scoring (14).
Turnover differential: Eagles plus-4; Bills plus-2.
Eagles player to watch
K Jake Elliott. The ninth-year player is dealing with accuracy issues and coming off missing two field-goal attempts — three if you include a 57-yard miss nullified by a penalty — in the first half against Washington. The misses add to a season in which the 30-year-old has gone 17 of 24, including 4 of 8 from 50 or more yards. Though accustomed to kicking outdoors, Elliott looks ahead to an outing with the forecast calling for a wintry mix of snow and rain hitting Orchard Park, New York.
Bills player to watch
QB Josh Allen. The eighth-year starter is coming off his third outing of the season and just seventh of his career without having a hand in a touchdown in a game he played a majority of snaps. By comparison, Allen has six outings in which he’s scored three or more times this season. At 29, Allen has scored 299 touchdowns, and is one away from becoming the NFL’s first player to reach 300 before turning 30.
Key Matchup
Eagles RB Saquon Barkley vs. Bills run defense. Barkley topped 100 yards rushing in two of his past three outings, after doing so only once in his first 12. He’s coming off a 132-yard outing against Washington, in which Barkley also scored for a third straight game. He faces a defense that has allowed 150 or more yards rushing seven times this season, including 246 in a 35-31 win over New England two weeks ago. The Bills have also allowed 24 TDs rushing, the second-most in a season in team history after giving up 26 in 1972.
Key injuries
Eagles: LB Nakobe Dean’s status bears monitoring after opening the week not practicing because of a hamstring issue. … RT Lane Johnson (foot) is in jeopardy of missing a sixth straight game. … DT Jalen Carter (shoulder) has resumed practicing and in position to return after missing three games. … A.J. Brown is expected to play despite missing practices this week after having his wisdom teeth removed.
Bills: Bills coach Sean McDermott has already ruled out S Jordan Poyer (hamstring), DT Jordan Philips (ankle) and PK Matt Prater (quadricep). … TE Dalton Kincaid’s status bears monitoring because of a nagging knee injury. … McDermott said Allen should be “good to go” after being limited in practice this week because of a sore right foot.
Series notes
The Eagles have won three straight, and five of the past six meetings. … The teams have split their eight meetings at Buffalo. … A win over the Bills would match the Eagles’ longest streak in the series after a 4-0 run spanning 1981-87. … In their most recent meeting, Philadelphia rallied from a 24-14 third-quarter deficit, with Elliott tying the game at 31 with a 59-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining. After Buffalo opened overtime with a field goal, Jalen Hurts secured the win with a 12-yard touchdown run.
Stats and stuff
Bills coach McDermott opened his NFL coaching career with his hometown Eagles on Andy Reid’s first staff in 1999. McDermott worked his way up to become Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator for two seasons before being fired after the 2010 season. McDermott has a 97-49 head coaching record, while earning wins against every NFL team except Philadelphia. … The Eagles became the NFC East’s first team to win consecutive division titles since Philadelphia’s four-year run from 2001-04. … Philadelphia has a 5-3 road record. The five road wins currently match the fewest during coach Nick Sirianni’s five-year tenure, after the team went 5-4 in 2023. … At 64-28, including playoffs, Sirianni ranks fourth on the NFL win list over a coach’s first five seasons. He trails George Seifert (68), Tony Dungy (67) and Don Shula (65). … With 32 total touchdowns, Hurts entered the weekend ranking fourth among NFL quarterbacks, trailing the Rams’ Matthew Stafford (40), Allen (37) and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence (33). … TE Dallas Goedert has a team-leading 10 TDs receiving, which is tied for third in the NFL and tied for first among tight ends entering this week. His 10 touchdowns also tie a franchise record for his position and first set by Pete Retzlaff in 1965. … LB Zack Baun is the NFL’s only player this season with 115-plus tackles, three-plus sacks and three or more takeaways. … The Bills set a franchise record by clinching their seventh straight playoff berth, and eighth in nine seasons under McDermott. Buffalo is also one of just five NFL teams to have won at least 11 games over six consecutive seasons. … The Bills are 25-4 in regular-season games played in December and January since 2020. … Allen improved to 8-0 this season and 40-7 overall when not committing a giveaway. … RB James Cook has taken over the NFL lead with 1,532 yards rushing — 44 ahead of Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor. O.J. Simpson is Buffalo’s lone player to lead the league in rushing, doing so four times in the 1970s. … Cook’s yards rushing rank third on the single-season list behind Simpson’s 2,003 in 1973 and 1,817 in ’75. … The Bills are 8-1 this season when Cook tops 100 yards rushing. … DE Greg Rousseau had 2 1/2 sacks against Cleveland to take over the team lead with 6 1/2, and was credited with a career-best seven quarterback hits. … S Jordan Poyer’s interception against Cleveland was the 25th of his career, and first since having four in 2022.
Fantasy tip
Turn elsewhere if you’re looking for a Bills wide receiver to count upon entering championship weekend. Buffalo’s receiver group — led by Khalil Shakir’s 66 catches for 684 yards — has combined for just 159 catches for 1,832 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
GIANTS AND RAIDERS HAVE NO INTEREST IN LOSING SUNDAY TO IMPROVE THEIR CHANCES AT NO. 1 DRAFT PICK
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Many Giants and Raiders fans want their teams to lose Sunday when they meet in Las Vegas, the reward for a loss being a clear shot at the top draft pick.
The players and coaches, of course, are not on board.
“I don’t give a (expletive) about the pick,” Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby said. “I don’t play for that. That’s not my job. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world, and that’s what I focus on every day and being a great leader and being an influence and on being that guy on a consistent basis for my team. The front office, the coaches, they do that.”
Las Vegas and New York have matching 2-13 records and nine-game losing streaks, both the worst in the NFL.
The Raiders long have been in search of a franchise quarterback who can change the trajectory of a team that has gone more than two decades without a playoff victory. Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is expected to be the first QB drafted, and him going to Las Vegas would inject energy into the club and its fans.
The Giants getting the top pick would give Joe Schoen — or whoever succeeds him as general manager if ownership decides to fire him — the chance to trade down with a quarterback-needy team and stockpile assets after moving up to take Jaxson Dart late in the first round last year. They don’t have a third-rounder in the upcoming draft as a result of that deal.
“We didn’t have to sell the farm to go up and get the quarterback,” Schoen said Dec. 2. “We were able to get him where we were, and it looks like that pick is going to pay off.”
Choosing first could mean little to both head coaches because there’s a better than average chance neither will be around to oversee the rebuild after this season. Mike Kafka has gone 0-5 since becoming the Giants’ interim coach, and Las Vegas’ Pete Carroll could become the third Raiders coach in three years to get fired.
“I’m not really that concerned about any of that, and I don’t think you want me to be,” Carroll said of the draft order. “We’re going to go play the best we can play and see what happens.”
Wan’Dale Robinson is approaching 1,000 yards receiving
Malik Nabers’ season-ending torn ACL in late September opened up an opportunity for fellow Giants receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who already was working hard to excel in a contract year. Robinson already has set career highs with four touchdowns and 901 yards receiving.
“It just goes to show the work that I put in, really, this offseason — didn’t really take any breaks,” Robinson said. “Now the progress is just showing.”
Robinson is 99 away from becoming the first player 5-foot-8 or shorter to reach the 1,000-yard mark since 5-7 Richard Johnson in 1989 and just the third since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, according to Sportradar. Teammates and family members have kept him abreast of his stats and he knows exactly what he needs to hit that milestone.
“Every receiver wants to hit that 1,000-yard mark,” Robinson said. “Just going to continue to try to do what I can do and hopefully get to that number.”
Ashton Jeanty shows skills at wide receiver
Raiders quarterback Geno Smith said he would have no problem throwing passes to running back Ashton Jeanty on a regular basis.
Jeanty showed off his route running and explosiveness with a 60-yard touchdown catch at Houston last Sunday.
“I think he could be a slot receiver in this league,” Smith said. “He’s got great hands. He’s great out of the backfield. He understands spacing, and he just knows what to do. You can tell he understands the game, and when he gets the ball in his hands, whether that’s in the backfield or in the catching game, he’s so explosive and dynamic.”
The Raiders have worked with Jeanty since the offseason to develop his receiving skills.
“I definitely have (worked hard), and I feel like I’ve shown that during my college career (at Boise State),” Jeanty said. “I haven’t gotten to it as much in the league, but if you go back and look at my game, I’ve done a great job in the receiving game throughout.”
Brian Burns keeps making an impact on defense
Brian Burns had two of the Giants’ four sacks against the Vikings, including a forced fumble that Tyler Nubin recovered for their only touchdown of the game. He’s second in the NFL with a career-high 15 sacks and has been the team’s most consistent player.
“Everything that he’s done hasn’t shocked anybody in the building,” said cornerback Paulson Adebo, who is in his first season with New York. “From the first days stepping in the building, meeting him and then just seeing him throughout the spring, throughout training camp, you kind of expect him to have a big year and he’s done exactly that.”
Smith’s future in Las Vegas uncertain
Smith could be getting ready to start his final two games with the Raiders, especially if the team drafts a quarterback next year. If they don’t, he could return until Las Vegas addresses the position from a more long-term perspective.
“I’m just focused on this week,” Smith said. “I’m not thinking too far ahead.”

Cardinals player to watch
TE Trey McBride was one of Arizona’s two Pro Bowl selections and is having the best season of his career with 109 catches for 1,098 yards and 10 TDs. McBride will try to bounce back after a quiet game by his standards — he had just four catches for 27 yards in last week’s loss to the Falcons.
Bengals player to watch
WR Ja’Marr Chase is the second player in franchise history to be selected to the Pro Bowl in his first five seasons. He is second in the league with 110 receptions and fourth with 1,256 receiving yards along with five touchdowns. He has a team-record seven 100-yard receiving games this season.
Key matchup
Bengals CB Dax Hill vs. Cardinals WRs Michael Wilson and Marvin Harrison Jr. Hill has been playing better when lined up covering outside receivers. He allowed only two receptions for 8 yards against Miami last week. Wilson has caught four TD passes in the past three games while he continues to work his way back from a heel injury. He was limited to a part-time role against the Falcons last week and hopes to get more snaps this week.
Key injuries
Cardinals: DL Walter Nolen III (knee) and CB Garrett Williams (Achilles tendon) were placed on injured reserve this week, joining a long list of injuries. LT Paris Johnson Jr. (knee), S Jalen Thompson (hamstring) and CB Max Melton (heel) missed the Falcons game but are still trying to return before the end of the season.
Bengals: TE Cam Grady (chest), WR Charlie Jones (ankle), DT B.J. Hill (ankle) and DE Joseph Ossai (ankle) have not practiced all week.
Series notes

This will be his 11th start of the season and the 100th game of his career. … Cardinals DL Calais Campbell blocked the first extra point of his career last week against the Falcons. The 39-year-old has blocked 10 field-goal attempts. … Arizona DL Darius Robinson had a career-high seven tackles last week and recovered the first fumble of his career. … Cardinals TE Elijah Higgins had career highs in both receptions (seven) and yards receiving (91) against the Falcons. … McBride needs eight catches to set the season record for an NFL tight end. Miami is second with 18. … Arizona has had 80 players appear in at least one game this season, the most in the NFL. … Cincinnati is 2-5 at home, including a four-game losing streak. …The Bengals have forced 11 turnovers in the past three games, the most in the NFL in that span. … QB Joe Burrow is the third player in NFL history with at least 150 touchdown passes in his first 75 games. … He has at least a 105 passer rating in two of his past three games. … WR Tee Higgins has caught a TD pass in at least six of his past seven games. … TE Mike Gesicki has a TD catch in two of his past three games. … Rookie LB Barrett Carter had his first interception last week. … CB DJ Turner II is tied for the NFL lead with a career-high 17 passes defensed. … P Ryan Rehkow leads the league in gross punting average (51.34 yards per punt) and is sixth in net average (43.0). … K Evan McPherson has made 11 straight field goals.
Fantasy tip
Cincinnati RB Chase Brown has scored at least two scrimmage touchdowns in two of his past three games. He has gained at least 90 scrimmage yards in his past five home games.

49ers defense: overall (18), rush (8), pass (23), scoring (11).
Turnover differential: Bears plus-21; 49ers minus-4.
Bears player to watch
DB Nahshon Wright forced a fumble last week and has 5 INTs, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles on the season. The only other player to hit those marks in the past 17 seasons was Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2019.
49ers player to watch
QB Brock Purdy became the first Niners QB to throw at least five TDs in a game last week since Steve Young did it in Super Bowl 29 a little more than 30 years ago. Purdy has thrown eight TD passes and only one INT the past two weeks and has multiple TD passes in five of his seven starts this season. Purdy leads the NFL with a 130 passer rating on third down this season.
Key matchup
Bears running game against 49ers defense. Chicago ranks second in the NFL in rushing and has had at least 138 yards in seven of the past eight games. The Niners rank third best in the NFL in allowing 87.4 yards per game since Week 11 and held Jonathan Taylor to 46 yards last week.
Key injuries
Bears: WR Luther Burden III (ankle) returned to practice on a limited basis after missing last week’s game and could play this week. … WR Rome Odunze (foot) and LB T.J. Edwards (glute) didn’t practice to start the week and could be sidelined again this week.
49ers: TE George Kittle (ankle) left last week’s game with an ankle injury and his status is in doubt this week. … WR Ricky Pearsall (knee) could return after missing last week’s game.
Series notes
The teams have alternated wins and losses in the past nine meetings. … The Bears are 2-1 all time at Levi’s Stadium. … The 49ers are 3-2 against the Bears under coach Kyle Shanahan. … This marks the first time these teams are playing in a season when both made the playoffs since 2001 when Chicago beat San Francisco 37-31 in Week 7.
Stats and stuff
The Bears clinched a playoff spot last week and can clinch their first division title since 2018 with either a win or a loss by Green Bay. … Chicago’s plus-21 turnover margin is the second best for any team through 15 games in the past 13 seasons, behind only the plus-23 for the 2019 Patriots. … The previous time the Bears finished a season plus-21 or better came in 1985 when they were plus-23 on the way to winning the franchise’s only Super Bowl title. … Chicago is the first team in NFL history to win six games after trailing in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. … Bears TE Colston Loveland has at least three catches in 10 straight games for the fifth-longest streak by a rookie TE since the merger. … Chicago QB Caleb Williams has nine TD passes and a 100.1 passer rating on third down. … Pro Bowl DB Kevin Byard III leads the NFL with six INTs, the most by any Bears defender since 2018. … The Bears haven’t allowed an opening-drive score in seven straight games and have given an NFL-low 10 points on opening drives this season. San Francisco has five TDs and one FG on seven opening drives with Purdy at QB. … The 49ers clinched their fourth playoff spot in the past five seasons last week and will earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC with wins in their final two games. … San Francisco is 4-0 in prime-time games this season. … The 48 points for the Niners last week were their most in a game since they also scored 48 against New Orleans on Dec. 8, 2019. … San Francisco has gone back-to-back games without punting for the first time in franchise history. … Christian McCaffrey’s 92 catches this season are tied with Roger Craig in 1985 for the most by any running back in 49ers history. … McCaffrey is second in the NFL with 1,888 yards from scrimmage and ranks third with 16 TDs. … WR Jauan Jennings has at least one TD catch in four straight games, tied for the longest streak for a Niners player since Vernon Davis did it five games in a row in 2013. … Jennings’ seven TD catches since Week 9 are one off the NFL lead held by Davante Adams. … Rookies Alfred Collins and C.J. West had their first career sacks last week, marking the first time San Francisco got sacks from two rookies in the same game since 2016. … The 49ers rank second in the NFL converting 50% of third down opportunities.
Fantasy tip
Bears WR D.J. Moore is coming off a season-high 97 yards receiving last week, including the game-winning TD in overtime. He has three touchdown catches the past two games and five in the past five games and could be a good option with Chicago short-handed at receiver.
MAYE AND THE PATRIOTS WILL TRY TO FINISH 8-0 ON THE ROAD AND WIN THE AFC EAST WHEN THEY VISIT JETS
New England (12-3) at New York Jets (3-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. EST, Fox.
BetMGM NFL odds: Patriots by 13 1/2.
Against the spread: Patriots 9-5-1, Jets 7-7-1.
Series record: Patriots lead 76-56-1.
Last meeting: Patriots beat the Jets 27-14 on Nov. 13, 2025, at Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Last week: Patriots beat Ravens 28-24; Jets lost to Saints 29-6.
Patriots offense: overall (6), rush (16), pass (4), scoring (7t).
Patriots defense: overall (7), rush (6), pass (11), scoring (7).
Jets offense: overall (29), rush (9), pass (32), scoring (28).
Jets defense: overall (21), rush (28), pass (13), scoring (30).
Turnover differential: Patriots even; Jets minus-18.
Patriots player to watch
QB Drake Maye. The second-year quarterback is serenaded almost weekly with “MVP!” chants from Patriots fans and for good reason: He enters the week first in the NFL in completion rate (70.9 percent), third in passer rating (108.5) and fourth in yards passing (3,947). He needs just 53 yards passing this week against the Jets to join Tom Brady (11 times) and Drew Bledsoe (twice) as the only New England quarterbacks to reach 4,000 in a season.
Jets player to watch
RB Breece Hall. He’s 46 yards rushing away from the first 1,000-yard season of his four-year career. Hall, scheduled to become a free agent in the offseason, would become just the eighth player in franchise history to rush for at least 1,000 yards and the first since Shonn Greene had the second of his two 1,000-yard seasons in 2012. Hall would also join Chris Ivory, Thomas Jones (three times), Curtis Martin (seven times), Freeman McNeil (twice), Adrian Murrell (twice) and John Riggins. It would also mark the 19th 1,000-yard rushing season in franchise history.
Key matchup
Maye and the Patriots’ passing offense vs. Jets’ passing defense. New York has had trouble consistently putting pressure on the quarterback and the Jets’ defense against the pass is shaky, with injuries and turnover in the secondary playing a large role. Maye is coming off a career-high 380 yards passing against Baltimore and could look to exploit New York’s up-and-down pass defense.
Key injuries
Patriots: WR Kayshon Boutte and LG Jared Wilson missed the first two practices this week while in the concussion protocol. … RB TreVeyon Henderson also started the week in the concussion protocol, but as a limited participant in the first two practices. … The statuses of WR Mack Hollins (abdomen) and CB Carlton Davis III (illness) were also up in the air after they both missed multiple practices.
Jets: QB Justin Fields (knee) was placed on season-ending injured reserve after he missed the past three games. … Edge rusher Will McDonald (knee), TE Mason Taylor (neck), DT Jay Tufele (foot) and LB Kiko Mauigoa (neck) were ruled out for the game.
Series notes
The Patriots have won 17 of the past 19 games in the series, including their victory at home last month. … New York snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Patriots in the 2023 season finale, beating New England 17-3 in Bill Belichick’s last game as coach. The Jets also won the first meeting last season 24-3 at home, but dropped the second matchup 25-22, so the Patriots have won the past two. … The teams have faced each other three times in the playoffs, with New England holding a 2-1 edge.
Stats and stuff
The Patriots have already clinched a playoff berth, but could win the AFC East regular-season title for the first time since 2019 — ending Buffalo’s five-year reign — with a win and a Bills loss or tie, or a tie and a Bills loss. … New England is the only team to not lose on the road this season and will try to finish 8-0 away from home. The Patriots, who were also 8-0 in 2007 and 2016, can join San Francisco (1984, 1989 and 1990) as the only teams to go undefeated on the road in three seasons since 1970. … A win will give the Patriots their eighth 13-win season in team history. Only San Francisco has more with 11. … WR Stefon Diggs has a team-leading 869 yards receiving and needs 131 over the final two games for his seventh 1,000-yard season. It would be the first by a New England player since Julian Edelman finished with 1,117 in 2019. Diggs, coming off his fourth 100-yard game of the season, has at least five 100-yard games in a season four times in his career, most recently in 2023 (five). … Henderson has four touchdown runs of 50-plus yards in 2025. Chris Johnson (2009, Tennessee) and Jim Brown (1963, Cleveland) are the only players with more TD runs of 50-plus yards in a single season with five. … CB Marcus Jones has returned two punts for a touchdown this season, joining Troy Brown (2001), Irving Fryar (1985) and Mike Haynes (1976) as the only Patriots to do so. … The Jets have lost three in a row following a stretch in which they won three out of five. They’ll be looking to prevent their second straight season with two losing streaks of at least four games. … Undrafted rookie QB Brady Cook will make his third consecutive start. In three NFL games, the former Missouri star has thrown for 527 yards and one TD with six INTs and a 59.2% completion rate. He has also been sacked 17 times. … WR Garrett Wilson, who’s on season-ending IR with a knee injury, hasn’t played since Nov. 9 and last caught a pass in a game on Oct. 12 — and still leads the Jets with 395 yards receiving. Rookie TE Mason Taylor is next with 369 and Hall has 332. … Hall needs 137 yards rushing in the final two games to pass Greene for 11th place on the team’s career rushing list. He’d pass Adrian Murrell for 10th if he gets 161. … New York went 2 for 15 on third down at New Orleans. For the season, the Jets are 27th in the NFL in third down conversion rate at 35%. … The Jets set an NFL record with their 15th straight game without an interception. … K Nick Folk has 430 field goals, six from tying Jason Elam and Sebastian Janikowski for 10th in NFL history. … Folk has converted 98 consecutive attempts from under 40 yards, the longest streak by any kicker over the past 40 seasons, according to Stats Pass. … P Austin McNamara’s 43.1 net average is the best by a Jets punter in a season with a minimum of 2.5 punts per game since Stats Pass began tracking the stat in 1976.
Fantasy tip
Diggs and TE Hunter Henry are Maye’s favorite targets and could see plenty of success against the Jets’ defense. Diggs had nine catches for 105 yards on 11 targets in the teams’ meeting last month, while Henry had four receptions for 45 yards on six targets.
WEEK 17 NFL CAPSULES
HOUSTON TEXANS (10-5) AT LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (11-4)
Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Chargers -1.5, Total 39.5
Denver’s win in Kansas City on Christmas night gave the Chargers added incentive to win Saturday night. If Los Angeles loses to Houston, the Broncos are AFC West champions. If the Chargers win, they go to Denver next week with a chance to claim the division — and at least one home game in the playoffs. Justin Herbert threw just three interceptions during the 2024 regular season before topping that total in a miserable playoff performance against the Texans. Houston walloped the visiting Chargers 32-12 in the AFC wild-card round last season, picking off Herbert four times. Los Angeles has won four straight games and seven of eight and clinched a playoff spot when the Indianapolis Colts lost to the San Francisco 49ers. The Texans have won seven straight games and would clinch a playoff berth by beating the Chargers. They are one game behind Jacksonville in the AFC South, thanks in large part to their harassing defense. Houston pass rushers Danielle Hunter (13 sacks) and Will Anderson Jr. (11.5) are enjoying big seasons.
BALTIMORE RAVENS (7-8) AT GREEN BAY PACKERS (9-5-1)
Saturday, 8 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Packers -4.5, Total 40.5
The Packers insist the late-game collapse and overtime loss at Chicago last week won’t dampen their spirit with the NFC North division title still in play. They’re a confirmed playoff participant after the Lions’ loss on Christmas Day at Minnesota and the Bears still have to play at San Francisco, where a loss equates to high stakes in Week 18. For the Packers to stay in that conversation, they’ll have to take care of business against the Ravens. Baltimore is hanging on by a thread in the AFC North and a loss hands the division title to the Steelers. A win kicks open the door to a possible playoff path — through Pittsburgh. Those teams play in Week 18. Quarterback health is a hot topic in the lead-in to this week’s game. Lamar Jackson (back contusion) has been banged up off and on since September. The Packers had their top quarterbacks leave Chicago hurt, but Jordan Love (shoulder/concussion) and Malik Willis (shoulder/illness) practiced Thursday in a limited capacity. Tyler Huntley, who won his only start of the season against the Bears in Week 8, would get the start if Jackson can’t play. After missing practice all week, Jackson is doubtful.
ARIZONA CARDINALS (3-12) AT CINCINNATI BENGALS (5-10)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bengals -7, Total 53.5
There hasn’t been a lot to celebrate for either team this season, but the Bengals are not complaining about Joe Burrow finding his groove last week. The Bengals enjoyed arguably their best all-around performance of the season last Sunday, scoring 35 straight points to wipe out an early 14-10 deficit in a 45-21 rout of the host Miami Dolphins. The Cardinals lost their seventh straight, a 26-19 home setback to the Atlanta Falcons, last Sunday and are fixed on figuring out what’s needed to compete next season. The Bengals answered their first shutout loss since 2017 – and their first with Burrow as quarterback – by posting their largest scoring output of the season. The Bengals lead the NFL with 11 takeaways since Week 12. Defensive end Myles Murphy and safety Jordan Battle, both third-year starters, teamed up for Cincinnati’s first takeaway against Miami. Jacoby Brissett has consistently produced since taking over the starting spot for Kyler Murray. He has 200-plus yards and at least one TD pass in each of his 10 starts this season. He has helped TE Trey McBride reach 100-plus receptions for the second consecutive season. McBride can become the first NFL tight end with back-to-back 110-catch seasons with one reception Sunday.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (9-6) AT CLEVELAND BROWNS (3-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Steelers -3, Total 34.5
The Steelers might be AFC North champions before midnight Saturday — if the Ravens lose at Green Bay — but the plan for Pittsburgh is to win the final two games, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. The gameplan might be different given the subtraction of WR DK Metcalf, who serves the first of his two-game suspension for grabbing a fan at Detroit. QB Aaron Rodgers called for other wide receivers to “step up” when called upon the next two games. Metcalf has been targeted 99 times and caught 59 passes for 850 yards, while all other Pittsburgh wideouts combined have been targeted 90 times with 56 receptions for 665 yards. Even without Metcalf, a huge boost might be on the way in the form of pass rusher T.J. Watt, who practiced Wednesday for the first time in two weeks. Watt has been sidelined since a procedure required to recover from a punctured lung. Watt’s presence is newsworthy for rookie QB Shedeur Sanders, who makes his first start against a division opponent. The Steelers held the Browns to three field goals in a 23-9 victory in their first meeting this season but haven’t won in Cleveland since 2021. Browns rookie RB Quinshon Judkins landed on injured reserve with a broken leg and dislocated ankle sustained last week, ending his season after rushing 34 times for 69 yards the past three games. Sanders is 1-4 as a starter but had the Browns in position to take down the Buffalo Bills last week before succumbing in a 23-20 defeat.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (5-10) AT TENNESSEE TITANS (3-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Saints -2.5, Total 39.5
Rookie quarterbacks are front and center on Sunday with Cam Ward starting to show why Tennessee drafted him first overall in April. Ward has three consecutive two-TD games and completed a career-high 75% of his passes against the Chiefs last week. New Orleans rookie Tyler Shough delivered a 300-yard game in the Saints’ 29-6 thrashing of the Jets last week. Ward was the headliner in a rookie class that leads a youth movement in Tennessee. Titans WR Chimere Dike, a fourth-round pick, has set himself apart by leading the NFL in all-purpose yards (151.3 per game) to earn a starting spot in the Pro Bowl. Shough has completed 66.4% of his passes for 1,792 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. His passer rating is 86.5.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (11-4) AT INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (8-7)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Jaguars -5.5, Total 48.5
Jacksonville demoralized the Colts in a 36-19 win in Florida on Dec. 7 and has already clinched its first playoff berth since 2022. The Jaguars, winners of six of the past eight meetings with Indianapolis, have won five consecutive games to surge ahead of the AFC South pack while the Colts have lost five in a row. Philip Rivers took over the QB1 job for the Colts since Daniel Jones tore his Achilles in the loss at Jacksonville earlier this month. Signed off the couch to start the last two games at age 44, Rivers had Indianapolis in the game for four quarters at Seattle and on Monday for two-plus quarters before the 49ers pulled away. Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence ran his interception-free streak to four games. With three touchdowns in the win, he set a career high with 26 touchdown passes this season. While 2025 first-round pick Travis Hunter played just seven games before sustaining a season-ending knee injury and 2024 first-round pick Brian Thomas Jr. has battled injuries and not followed up his breakout rookie season, Jacksonville’s receiver-by-committee approach has worked well with five different leading receivers in the team’s last five games.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (7-8) AT MIAMI DOLPHINS (6-9)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Buccaneers -5.5, Total 45.5
The Buccaneers have won four consecutive division titles since 2021 and are in must-win territory at Miami after being bounced from the NFC South lead by the Panthers last week. Tampa has won six of the past seven meetings with the Dolphins, who are going with Quinn Ewers at quarterback for the second consecutive game because of Tua Tagovailoa’s turnover issues. The Bucs have lost each of their past three games by four points or fewer. Bucs QB Baker Mayfield faces a Miami defense that excelled during the team’s recent four-game winning streak that provided a brief sliver of hope to make the playoffs. In two games since, the Dolphins have allowed 73 points; opponents have scored on 11 of their last 18 possessions with 10 touchdowns. Miami allowed four consecutive touchdown drives to open the second half last week in a 45-21 loss to Cincinnati. The prior week, the Dolphins allowed four consecutive touchdown drives from the end of the first half into the third quarter in a loss to Pittsburgh. Ewers was effective early and then struggled toward the end of his first start last week. He completed 20 of 30 passes for 260 yards but threw two interceptions with no touchdowns.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (12-3) AT NEW YORK JETS (3-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Patriots -13.5, Total 42.5
The Jets are cooking up a top draft pick and have been out of the playoff chase for weeks as a familiar, crippling problem struck for first-year coach Aaron Glenn: the franchise still doesn’t have a quarterback. Justin Fields (knee; IR) and Tyrod Taylor were not successful getting the Jets’ offense off the ground and undrafted rookie Brady Cook has been given a shot this month to prove he can bring value to the team going forward. The Patriots are more than settled at the position with Drake Maye delivering MVP-caliber production in his second NFL season. The No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft leads the league in completion percentage (70.9) and New England is 7-0 on the road this season. Cook has passed for 527 yards and one touchdown with six interceptions in three games this season.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (12-3) AT CAROLINA PANTHERS (8-7)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Seahawks -7.5, Total 42.5
Seattle has won five consecutive games and the Panthers are riding high after a statement win over reigning NFC South division champion Tampa Bay last week, but the challenge on Sunday could be not looking ahead to bigger fish in Week 18. The Seahawks play at San Francisco in the regular-season finale, which could decide the NFC West and determine the No. 1 seed in the conference. The Panthers, leading the division after a 23-20 win over the Buccaneers last Sunday, are at Tampa next week with a playoff spot on the line. Panthers QB Bryce Young drove the Panthers down the field for a go-ahead field goal with a little more than two minutes remaining last week. It was the 12th game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime in three seasons for Young — the most of any QB over that span. The Seahawks can win the division this week in Mike Macdonald’s second season — and for the first time since 2020 — but won’t know anything about their final playoff positioning until the 49ers (11-4) and Rams (11-4) take the field. Seattle took control of its playoff destiny when it overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat the Rams, 38-37, in overtime last week, grabbing the division lead in the process.
NEW YORK GIANTS (2-13) AT LAS VEGAS RAIDERS (2-13)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Giants -1.5, Total 40.5
Losing this game has all kinds of value, with the chance to take the lead in the chase for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft in play. Neither coach wants to discuss that treasure or a 14th loss to echo conversations underscoring the failures it took to get here. Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart is doing his best to showcase enough potential to enter the offseason as the incumbent starter. The game between teams with matching 2-13 records is just the third in NFL history where both are at least 11 games under .500, and the first such matchup since 1991. Dart did not have a pass attempt until under two minutes remained in the first half of a 16-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week but was sacked five times while completing 7 of 13 pass attempts for just 33 yards. Three starting offensive linemen, including left tackle Andrew Thomas, were idle early in the week due to injuries. The Raiders nearly broke free from their doldrums last Sunday after taking a third-quarter lead on the road against the Houston Texans, only to fall 23-21. Last year’s 4-13 record allowed Las Vegas to select running back Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall draft pick, and he continued to show his promise against the Texans with a 60-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter and a 51-yard TD run late in the game.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (10-5) AT BUFFALO BILLS (11-4)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bills -1.5, Total 44.5
The Bills are one game behind the Patriots in the AFC East race with two games left and need to prove to themselves that they can stop the run. Cold temperatures, a chance of precipitation and a heavy dose of Saquon Barkley are all in the forecast for the Week 17 clash at Highmark Stadium, where Buffalo is 6-1 this season. Barkley has rushed for 332 yards with three touchdowns in the last three games to top the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth time in his career. The Eagles are averaging 4.9 yards per carry during that span, which included an overtime road loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, a shutout of the Las Vegas Raiders and a 29-18 road win last weekend against the Washington Commanders. The Bills have won four straight games to keep the pressure on the Patriots despite their struggles against the run. Buffalo ranks 30th in rushing defense (144.3 yards per game) and allows a whopping 5.4 yards per carry — second-most in the NFL to the New York Giants (5.5). Nobody has allowed as many touchdowns on the ground (24) as the Bills. After allowing a season-high 246 rushing yards (and four TDs) in a Week 15 win at New England, Buffalo surrendered 160 yards on the ground in a 23-20 escape at Cleveland last weekend.
CHICAGO BEARS (11-4) AT SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (11-4)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: 49ers -3, Total 52.5
Teams with aspirations of claiming the NFC’s top seed square off in a primetime matchup likely to have a wide-reaching impact on the conference playoff picture. Chicago clinched a playoff spot with last Saturday’s 22-16 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers paired with Detroit’s loss to Seattle. The Bears, winners of 11 of their past 13, could clinch the division crown if the Packers lose to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. If Green Bay wins, Chicago can clinch by beating San Francisco. The 49ers clinched a playoff spot last Sunday, one day before whipping the Indianapolis Colts 48-27. San Francisco has won five straight games and fancies a run at the No. 1 seed. The Super Bowl will be played in its home stadium in Santa Clara this season. The 49ers are part of a power-packed NFC West that has three teams with 11 or more wins, counting the current No. 6 seed Los Angeles Rams. They are home again next week in a possible West division title game of sorts with the Seahawks. 49ers QB Brock Purdy passed for a career-high five touchdown passes in a superb performance against the Colts. Purdy is the first San Francisco quarterback to throw at least five TDs in a game since Steve Young tossed a Super Bowl-record six during a rout of the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX (1994 season). Bears QB Caleb Williams has thrown 10 touchdown passes over the past five games.

MICHIGAN HIRES UTAH COACH KYLE WHITTINGHAM TO REPLACE SHERRONE MOORE
Michigan officially hired Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on Friday to guide its recent national-championship-winning program out of a period marked by scandal.
Whittingham signed a five-year contract covering the 2026 through 2030 seasons that, according to ESPN, will be worth $41 million (an annual average of $8.2 million) and will be 75% guaranteed.
“Michigan is synonymous with tradition and excellence — both on the field and beyond — and our entire program is committed to upholding those values while striving for greatness together,” Whittingham said in a statement. “My family and I are thrilled to join the University of Michigan community, and we look forward to helping our players grow, develop, and reach their highest potential — on the gridiron, in the classroom, and as leaders.
“It’s a privilege to be part of something that inspires pride in every Wolverine fan.”
According to Yahoo and ESPN reports, Whittingham informed the Utes that he would not coach them in the Las Vegas Bowl on New Year’s Eve against Nebraska, which was set to be his farewell appearance with the program. He was said to be traveling to Orlando to meet with the Wolverines, where they are preparing for next week’s Citrus Bowl against Texas.
Whittingham, 66, announced earlier this month that he is stepping down after 21 seasons as the Utes’ head coach. He led Utah to a 177-88 record over his tenure to become the school’s all-time winningest coach.
Morgan Scalley, already named Whittingham’s successor, will coach Utah in the bowl game.
Whittingham earned one Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year award (2008), two Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors in 2019 and 2021 and was national Coach of the Year in 2008 after leading Utah to a 13-0 mark and Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama to finish with a No. 2 ranking.
Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore with cause on Dec. 10 for having an extramarital relationship with a subordinate in the football program.
Whittingham has run a scandal-free program at Utah, making him a potential breath of fresh air after the recent turbulence in Ann Arbor with Moore’s dismissal and NCAA investigations and sanctions for a sign-stealing scheme under previous head coach Jim Harbaugh.
“Kyle Whittingham is a well-respected and highly successful head coach who is widely recognized as a leader of exceptional character and principled leadership,” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement. “Throughout our search, he consistently demonstrated the qualities we value at Michigan: vision, resilience, and the ability to build and sustain championship-caliber teams.
“Kyle brings not only a proven track record of success, but also a commitment to creating a program rooted in toughness, physicality, discipline and respect — where student-athletes and coaches represent the university with distinction both on and off the field.”
University president Domenico Grasso added in a statement that Whittingham will bring “dignity, integrity and fierce competitiveness to the program” and his “strong emphasis” on academics helps make him “exactly the right fit for the University of Michigan at this time.”
Before the hire was official, Wolverines interim head coach Biff Poggi weighed in on Whittingham in a social media post.
“Michigan Football is in GREAT hands under Kyle Whittingham!!!!” Poggi wrote. “Proven winner, true gentleman, tough nosed Michigan coach of days gone by. Great hire by Warde Manuel. The kids will love him. Exciting days ahead for Michigan.”
Poggi will lead the No. 18 Wolverines (9-3) against No. 13 Texas (9-3) in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
BOWL ROUNDUP: MINNESOTA NIPS NEW MEXICO IN OT
Jalen Smith made two touchdown catches, including a diving grab in overtime to win the game, to lead Minnesota to a 20-17 victory over New Mexico in the Rate Bowl on Friday in Phoenix.
Smith finished with six catches for 64 yards and the two scores for Minnesota (8-5). Drake Lindsey completed 18 of 28 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns, and Darius Taylor had 24 carries for 116 yards and a score.
Minnesota won its ninth consecutive bowl game and improved to 7-0 in bowl games under coach P.J. Fleck.
Jack Layne completed 14 of 25 passes for 88 yards and an interception for New Mexico (9-4). Damon Bankston had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
NORTHWESTERN 34, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 7
Preston Stone completed 19 of 31 passes for 226 yards and three scores and the Wildcats turned four takeaways into touchdowns during a blowout of the Chippewas in the GameAbove Sports Bowl at Detroit.
Braden Turner grabbed an interception before returning a fumble for a touchdown, while Aidan Hubbard had three sacks and a forced fumble as Northwestern stymied Central Michigan’s offense for three-plus quarters.
Griffin Wilde hauled in 10 catches for 97 yards and a pair of TDs for Northwestern (7-6), which won its sixth consecutive bowl appearance. Joe Labas connected on 21 of 25 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown while fumbling twice for Central Michigan (7-6).
UTSA 57, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 20
Owen McCown passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns, Will Henderson III scored three times, and the Roadrunners rallied from an early 14-point deficit to pound the Panthers in the First Responder Bowl at Dallas.
McCown, who finished the season with 2,995 passing yards, finished 18 of 28 for the Roadrunners (7-6), who tallied 38 unanswered points during one stretch and outscored the Panthers 57-6 over the final 54 minutes. Henderson totaled 59 yards on 14 carries with two rushing scores, and he caught a touchdown pass. Devin McCuin (six catches, 73 yards) and Patrick Overmyer added TD receptions as the Roadrunners won a bowl game for the third year in a row.
Joe Pesansky went 11-for-31 for 102 yards with two scores and an interception for the Panthers (7-6), who were playing in their first bowl game since the 2019 Camellia Bowl. Florida International’s Keyone Jenkins completed 7 of 14 passes for 49 yards and an interception.

NBA NEWS
NBA ROUNDUP: JAYLEN BROWN EXTENDS SCORING STREAK AS CELTICS TOP PACERS
Jaylen Brown scored a game-high 30 points as the Boston Celtics extended their winning streak to four games by beating the Indiana Pacers 140-122 on Friday in Indianapolis.
Brown scored at least 30 points for the eighth straight game. Larry Bird holds the franchise record for consecutive games with at least 30 points (nine in 1984-85).
Payton Pritchard added 29 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Celtics, who trailed by 15 in the first quarter. Sam Hauser came off the bench and tossed in 23 points. Boston also received 21 points, five rebounds and six assists from point guard Derrick White.
Indiana took its seventh straight loss overall and its fourth consecutive home defeat to take over the league’s worst record at 6-25. Andrew Nembhard led the Pacers with 18 points and eight assists, but he committed a game-high five turnovers.
HEAT 126, HAWKS 111
Norman Powell scored 25 points and second-year forward Pelle Larsson added a career-high 21 as Miami pulled away late at Atlanta to snap a three-game losing streak.
With Tyler Herro (toe) and Bam Adebayo (late scratch with lower back soreness) unavailable, the Heat placed six players in double figures with Andrew Wiggins contributing 18 points, Kel’el Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr. posting 16 apiece and Nikola Jovic scoring 10 in his first game after sitting out six with an elbow contusion.
Trae Young recorded a game-high 30 points for the Hawks while Jalen Johnson delivered 24 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists for his 12th straight double-double — the NBA’s longest streak this season. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 15 points for Atlanta, which lost for the fifth time in a row and ninth in their last 11 games.
WIZARDS 138, RAPTORS 117
Kyshawn George scored 23 points to help lead Washington past visiting Toronto, allowing the Wizards to move above the Pacers in the chase for the NBA’s worst record.
CJ McCollum and Bilal Coulibaly added 21 points apiece for the Wizards, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Brandon Ingram’s 29 points paced the Raptors while Immanuel Quickley scored 25 and Ja’Kobe Walter had 15 off the bench. Toronto took its third loss in four games.
BULLS 109, 76ERS 102
Coby White scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Zach Collins and Tre Jones had 15 points apiece to lift streaking Chicago to a victory against visiting Philadelphia.
Chicago won for the fifth straight time behind a 13-2 run to finish the game. Joel Embiid (31 points), Tyrese Maxey (27) and Paul George (15) kept Philadelphia afloat before the team faded down the stretch. The 76ers shot 23.8% in the fourth quarter and 37.6% for the game.
Josh Giddey posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists for the Bulls. Matas Buzelis and Jalen Smith grabbed eight rebounds apiece to help Chicago finish plus-six on the glass. Smith scored 12 points and Buzelis chipped in 10.
GRIZZLIES 125, BUCKS 104
Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 24 points and blocked five shots, Cam Spencer added 19 points and Ja Morant made a triumphant return for Memphis in a victory over visiting Milwaukee.
Morant finished with 17 points, 10 assists and one steal as the Grizzlies won their eighth straight game against the Bucks. Morant, upgraded to questionable before tipoff, had missed the previous four games with a left ankle sprain sustained Dec. 15 against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Milwaukee, which lost for the sixth time in eight games, was led by AJ Green with 20 points. He had six 3-pointers. Kevin Porter Jr. added 16 points and eight boards while Bobby Portis (12 rebounds), Kyle Kuzma and Ryan Rollins each finished with 15 points.
HORNETS 120, MAGIC 105
Charlotte shot 19-for-39 from 3-point range and earned a win over host Orlando, but it also lost standout rookie Kon Knueppel to a potentially significant ankle injury.
Knueppel, who had 16 points and four 3-pointers in just 15 minutes, badly twisted his ankle on an opponent’s foot while tracking a rebound. LaMelo Ball led seven Hornets in double figures with 22 points while adding five assists.
Anthony Black had 24 points to lead the Magic. Wendell Carter Jr. scored 16, Desmond Bane contributed with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jase Richardson poured in 14 off the bench and Paolo Banchero scored 13.
SUNS 115, PELICANS 108
Devin Booker scored 12 fourth-quarter points and Mark Williams added 10 in the period as visiting Phoenix held off New Orleans.
Booker, who finished with a game-high 30 points, and Williams, who scored 24 points, buoyed the Suns in a tightly contested final period, including the decisive 18-8 run over the closing 4:49.
Zion Williamson led the Pelicans with 20 points, contributing to New Orleans’ 60 bench points for the game. Jordan Poole scored 19 points but made just 2 of 11 3-point attempts.

TOP INDIANA HEADLINES/PRESS RELEASES
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
COLTS DT DEFOREST BUCKNER (NECK) TO HAVE SEASON-ENDING SURGERY
Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner will undergo season-ending surgery on a herniated disc after aggravating his neck injury.
Head coach Shane Steichen announced the update on Friday for Buckner, 31, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who only recently returned from injured reserve.
Buckner recorded five tackles in Monday night’s 48-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, his first appearance since a 27-20 loss at Pittsburgh on Nov. 2.
He missed five games on IR with a neck injury. Prior to that, he had only missed six games to injury throughout his 10-year NFL career, with five of those coming in 2024 due to an ankle injury.
Buckner finishes the season with 4.0 sacks, 47 tackles and 13 quarterback hits in 10 games (all starts). He will be placed on IR but is expected to return next season, Steichen said.
He has 71.5 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries and 652 tackles in 151 games (146 starts) with San Francisco (2016-19) and Indianapolis. The 49ers drafted him with the No. 7 overall pick in 2016.
After a promising start, the Colts (8-7) have lost five consecutive games and are on the brink of playoff elimination entering Sunday’s home game against the division-leading Jacksonville Jaguars (11-4).
In addition to Buckner, Indianapolis has ruled out center Tanor Bortolini (concussion), wide receiver Anthony Gould (foot), tight end Drew Ogletree (neck) and defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau (oblique).
COLTS RULE OUT C TANOR BORTOLINI, WR ANTHONY GOULD, TE DREW OGLETREE, DE J.T. TUIMOLOAU FOR WEEK 17 GAME VS. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS; DT DEFOREST BUCKNER TO BE PLACED ON INJURED RESERVE
The Colts on Friday ruled out center Tanor Bortolini (concussion), wide receiver Anthony Gould (foot), tight end Drew Ogletree (neck) and defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau (oblique) for their Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Shane Steichen said.
Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (neck) will be placed on injured reserve, Steichen said, and will undergo a procedure next week. Steichen said Buckner re-aggravated his neck injury in Week 16.
Buckner is expected to return next season, Steichen said.
Cornerback Sauce Gardner (calf) participated in practice Friday and is set to play in his first game since Week 13. Left tackle Bernhard Raimann (elbow) also participated in practice every day this week and is in line to play after missing Week 16.
Bortolini, Ogletree and Tuimoloau all were injured in the Colts’ Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. Buckner sustained a neck injury in Week 9, was placed on injured reserve prior to Week 10 and was activated off injured reserve for Week 16. Gould has been out since sustaining a foot injury in Week 14.
COLTS-JAGUARS PREVIEW
The clearest way to look at Sunday’s Colts-Jaguars game is through the lens of two teams that’ve been heading in opposite directions over the last month.
Since Week 10, the Jaguars have won six consecutive games. Several of those wins have been in remarkably impressive fashion: There was a 35-6 dismantling of the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11; a 36-19 win over the Colts in Week 14 that gave Jacksonville control of the AFC South; and a 34-20 road win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16 that served as a wakeup call to anyone who might’ve been sleeping on the Jaguars at this point.
The Colts, meanwhile, have not won a game played in the United States since before Halloween. After their dramatic Week 10 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Berlin and an ensuing bye week, the Colts have lost five consecutive games. They’ve gone from having a banged-up Daniel Jones behind center to losing their starting quarterback to a torn Achilles’, then signing 44-year-old Philip Rivers to steady the season, only to have their defense get “dominated” on Monday Night Football a few days ago.
Instead of a Week 17 showdown that could determine the winner of the AFC South, the Colts could be eliminated or the Jaguars could clinch before kickoff. If the Houston Texans lose to the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday afternoon, the Colts would still be in contention; if the Texans win, the Colts will be eliminated from the playoffs.
But the Colts have not approached Week 17 with much thought to if their playoff chances will still be greater than zero come Sunday. What happens between the Texans and Chargers is out of their control.
“There is a chance,” head coach Shane Steichen said. “I know they’re slim, but we’ve got to go out and control what we can control, and that’s winning a football game on Sunday.”
Rivers will start regardless of the outcome of that Texans-Chargers game, as he’s gone through practice this week with the Colts’ first-team offense, preparing as if the stakes of Sunday’s game will matter to the AFC playoff picture. No one inside the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center is allowing their mind to drift to what-if scenarios while preparing to face the surging Jaguars.
“Anything can happen across the league,” Rivers said. “I think our focus, and what I’ve seemed to gather just from the locker room – obviously, I haven’t been here long, is we need to just win a football game. I think keep it as simple as that. We get an opportunity. The opportunities are dwindling. Go out and execute and put a complete game together in all phases and win a game. Obviously, we know all the other scenarios out there, but all the scenarios out there include us winning, and that’s the only one we can control. So I think that’ll be best for us to just keep that simple focus right there.”
As for matching up with the Jaguars, the Colts will need to find solutions defensively against a Jacksonville offense that, over its six-game winning streak, has scored a touchdown on 34.7 percent of its possessions, which stands as the fourth-highest rate in the NFL since Week 11. Those scores have been fueled by the Jaguars generating an explosive gain on nearly one in every five pass attempts, good for fourth-best in the NFL over the last six weeks.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has had a passer rating north of 105 in each of his last four games, a stretch in which he’s thrown for 12 touchdowns against zero interceptions. For a Colts defense coming off allowing a five-touchdown game from San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, finding solutions on Sunday will be at a premium.
One of those solutions could be the return of cornerback Sauce Gardner, who is tracking to return and play for the first time since Week 13.
Offensively, while what Rivers did against the 49ers was impressive, the Colts are looking for ways to get running back Jonathan Taylor rolling again. Over the last five weeks, Taylor is averaging 70 yards on 20 rushing attempts per game and has just two total touchdowns; from Weeks 1-10, Taylor averaged 114 rushing yards on 19 attempts per game with 17 total touchdowns.
Still, the 74 yards Taylor churned out in Week 14 against the Jaguars are the most any single player has had against Jacksonville this season. He’s one of three running backs to have at least 60 rushing yards against the Jaguars in 2025, along with Houston’s Woody Marks (63, Week 10) and Tennessee’s Tony Pollard (60, Week 13).
“It’s something we’re really trying to dive deep into as a staff and see if we can’t put the guys in a better position to go have that success, and shoot, each one of them is trying to do their job just a little bit better, the same way we are,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “So it’s a group, collective effort, 11 of those guys on the field and us coaching staff, try to go get back to running the ball a little bit better. And we can. We have the guys that are capable. I know JT is excited for his opportunity to get a few more carries this week, see what we can do.”

BROWN DROPS 30 AS CELTICS SWEEP HOME-AND-HOME WITH PACERS
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jaylen Brown scored 30 points and the Boston Celtics made 20 3-pointers in a 140-122 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.
The All-NBA forward, who is averaging 29.4 points, shot 13 of 20 from the field and made two 3-pointers. Payton Pritchard added 29 points, making three 3s, and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Celtics were 20 of 39 from beyond the arc compared to the Pacers’ 18 of 44. Reserve Sam Hauser was 7 for 8 behind the arc and scored 23 points, while Derrick White added 21 points with three 3s.
The Celtics (19-11), winners of four in a row and back-to-back games against Indiana, were starting a five-game road trip.
Andrew Nembhard led the Pacers (6-25) with 18 points and four 3s.
The Celtics trailed by 15 midway through the first quarter, but methodically chipped away at the deficit, then pulled away with six 3-pointers in a 47-point second quarter for a 75-61 halftime lead.

Celtics: Visit Portland on Sunday.
Pacers: Visit Miami on Saturday.

PURDUE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BOILERS TAKE ON ILLINOIS IN BIG TEN HOME OPENER ON SUNDAY
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women’s basketball team returns from the holiday break for its Big Ten home opener on Sunday against Illinois. Jack Kizer and Sydney Parrish will be on the call for the noon tip on the Big Ten Network.

Butler University Upgrades Iconic Hinkle Fieldhouse with Dynamic LED Video
Technology consultant Anthony James Partners (AJP) provided design, procurement, and construction administration services for the upgrades, supporting Butler in selecting SNA Displays to manufacture and install more than 2,700 square feet of LED video display technology, including a center hung display system, baseline LED ribbons, multiple courtside tables, and other digital signage.
The centerpiece of the project is a new LED center hung display consisting of four curved, 14-foot-tall video screens seamlessly connected to create a continuous 360-degree video surface. Each side features a 4 mm pixel pitch for increased pixel density and clarity. The center hung also includes custom static lettering along the top ring of the structure and a team-branded Bulldog logo facing downward toward the playing surface.
Other video signage includes 3-foot-high LED ribbons along the second-level fascia at both ends of the Fieldhouse, two 19-foot-long vomitory displays between the second and third levels, and eight new courtside mobile scorer’s tables equipped with LED screens. For recruitment and training purposes, the project also features two new ASPECT™ all-in-one 16:9 video screens from SNA Displays in an adjacent practice facility, directly integrated into the new control management system.

Series Notes: UNI leads the all-time series by a 16-5 margin and has won the last eight matchups between the two programs. Last season, the Panthers picked up a 93-70 win in Cedar Falls and an 85-73 win to close the regular season at the ARC.
@ValpoWBB…
…versus Central Michigan
– It was a struggle from the start for the Beacons, as their lone points of the opening quarter came on a coast-to-coast layup from Allia von Schlegell 3:30 into the game. CMU led 16-2 at the end of the first period.
The Chippewas extended their advantage throughout the second quarter, until a late 7-0 run for Valpo made it 44-19 game at halftime. von Schlegell knocked down a triple around layups from Kayla Sullivan and Kamryn Winch for the late spurt.
– CMU led 65-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Valpo played without the services of Fiona Connolly due to injury, and then lost Autumn Dibb to injury early in the second half.
– von Schlegell paced the Beacons with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. It is her sixth double-figure scoring effort of the season.
– Winch was Valpo’s second-leading scorer, hitting 3-of-5 off the bench for seven points while also grabbing six rebounds.
– Mor Shabtai matched her career best and led the Beacons with nine rebounds, while also tallying three assists against just one turnover.
– Bella Swedlund knocked down the first field goal of her collegiate career.
– Valpo shot 25% from the floor and was just 4-for-31 from 3-point range, while CMU hit at a 51.5% clip from the field and was 6-of-17 from deep.
…at Western Michigan
– Western Michigan knocked down a 3-pointer on its first possession, but the Beacon defense kept the Broncos off the board for the next eight-plus minutes.
– Meanwhile, Valpo was off to a scorching start from deep on the offensive end. Fiona Connolly knocked down two early triples, followed by a Mikayla Huffine 3-pointer, and when Allia von Schlegell hit from downtown nearing the halfway mark of the opening quarter, WMU was forced to use a timeout with Valpo leading 12-3.
– The Beacons got their lead to double figures with 1:18 to play in the period on a midrange jumper from Milana Nenadic before the Broncos scored the final four of the quarter to slice Valpo’s advantage to 14-7.
– von Schlegell carried the Valpo offense in the first half of the second quarter, scoring the Beacons’ first seven points of the quarter as the lead remained seven points at the halfway mark.
– A 7-2 spurt for WMU late in the quarter cut Valpo’s lead to two points, but the Beacons kept hold of the lead and were up 31-28 at halftime.
– WMU opened the second half on a 6-1 run to take its first lead since the game’s opening minute, forcing a Valpo timeout two minutes into the half trailing 34-32.
– The score stayed at 34-32 for over four minutes until a pull-up jumper from Autumn Dibb tied the game. A 3-pointer from Mor Shabtai put the Beacons in front with 2:13 to play in the third quarter, but the Broncos scored eight points on their final three possessions of the period to lead 42-39 with 10 minutes to play.
– von Schlegell brought Valpo back within one with a pair of free throws just nine seconds into the fourth quarter before WMU went on a 9-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to extend its lead to double figures at 51-41.
– Another strong stretch for the Beacon defense kept WMU from putting a point on the board for over four minutes, but the Beacons scored just four points of their own over that stretch and got no closer than six in the late stages.
– For the second time in less than 48 hours, von Schlegell matched her career high and led all players, scoring 18 points. The freshman hit a trio of 3-pointers and went 7-of-8 from the foul line in her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season.
– Connolly scored in double figures for the eighth time this year, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
– Nenadic set a career high with 10 rebounds, while Dibb posted a career-best four assists.
– The 58 points WMU scored marked a season low by a Valpo opponent. The Broncos hit just 35.1% from the floor and were 5-of-19 from 3-point range.
– The Beacons finished the afternoon 14-of-47 (29.8%) from the field. After starting the game 4-for-4 from deep, Valpo hit just three of its last 20 3-point attempts.
…looking ahead
– The Beacons face the Indiana road swing later this week, traveling to Indiana State and Evansville.
…at the ARC
– Wednesday’s game is the fifth of 13 home games this season for the Beacons, as Valpo hosts three nonconference games and 10 MVC games.
– The Beacons are currently 0-4 at the ARC this year.
– Valpo posted a 9-6 record at the ARC last season, the program’s first winning record at home since the 2019-20 season.
….and @ValleyHoops
– Valpo is in its ninth season as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
– Valpo was picked outside the top-four of the MVC preseason poll, as the Valley released only the top four selections.
– The Valley finished last season ranked seventh in the NET, matching the conference’s highest NET/RPI ranking in Valpo’s time as an MVC member (2020-21).
…looking back at last year
– Valpo finished last season with a 13-19 overall record and went 9-11 in MVC play to finish in eighth place.
– Among the Beacons’ 13 victories were a thrilling rally from a 20-point deficit for a home win over Drake which entered the game ranked 69th in NET, the program’s highest-ranked win since a win over #54 UNI in 2021-22.
– Leah Earnest was tabbed a First Team All-MVC honoree as she concluded a decorated career that saw her finish first in program history in career rebounds and third in career scoring.
– The 2024-25 Beacons hit 245 3-pointers, third-most in a single season in program history, and tallied 314 steals, seventh on the program’s single-season chart and the most since 2001-02.
@UNIwbb
– UNI comes into Monday’s game with a 5-6 overall record, most recently earning a 58-40 win at St. Thomas on Dec. 21.
– The Panthers won their lone MVC game to date, a 68-54 home triumph over Illinois State.
– Ryley Goebel leads the Panthers, averaging 11.1 points/game for a balanced UNI offense – all five starters score at least eight points per game.
All For Allia
– Freshman Allia von Schlegell enters the heart of MVC play on a hot streak, as she has paced the Beacons in scoring in each of their last three games – including a 14-point effort last time out against Central Michigan.
– von Schlegell set and then matched her career high in the previous two games with 18 points against SIUE and at Western Michigan, leading all players in scoring in both games.
– von Schlegell scored in double figures six times in nonconference action, among the best in program history in terms of double-digit scoring outputs by a freshman in nonconference games since Valpo joined the North Star Conference for the 1987-88 season:
Dani Franklin, 2014-15, 11
Meredith Hamlet, 2015-16, 8
Tabitha Gerardot, 2010-11, 8
Sarrah Stricklett, 1996-97, at least 7 (2 boxes unavailable)
Debbie Bolen, 1989-90, at least 7 (1 box unavailable)
Jeanette Gray, 1999-2000, 7
Allia von Schlegell, 2025-26, 6
Stephanie Greer, 1987-88, 6
Amy Cole, 1987-88, 6
Linda Batz, 1987-88, 6
Ali Saunders, 2022-23, 5
Jamie Gutowski, 2002-03, 5
– Notably, the six players ahead of von Schlegell on that list all went on to earn All-Freshman/Newcomer Team honors and closed their time at Valpo among the top-12 in program history in career scoring.
Shifting Starters
– With Fiona Connolly missing the CMU game due to injury, Valpo used its sixth different starting lineup of the season last time out, as Kylie Waytashek was reinserted into the starting five.
– Eight different players have been a part of at least one starting five this year, with two of them – Mor Shabtai and Mikayla Huffine – starting every game.
Gimme Mor
– Sophomore guard Mor Shabtai had a career performance in the Beacons’ MVC opener against UIC.
– Shabtai, who entered the game with career highs of 11 points and four rebounds, easily outdid that as she paced Valpo with 16 points and nine rebounds.
– She went 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, to set new bests in field goals made and 3-pointers made.
– Shabtai is just the third Valpo player in the last six seasons to post at least 16 points, nine rebounds and three made 3-pointers in a single game, joining Leah Earnest (2x) and Shay Frederick.
– Shabtai matched that nine-rebound mark last time out against Central Michigan – that is the most rebounds by a player listed at 5-4 or shorter in program history.
Home Sweet Home
– After playing their first three games of the year and seven of their first eight away from home, the Beacons will enjoy their beds at home this month.
– Four of Valpo’s five games in December are at the ARC, with its lone road game being Sunday’s short trip to Kalamazoo to play at Western Michigan.
– Valpo will play its first two MVC games at home as part of this stretch, the first time it opens conference play with two home games since the 2020-21 season.
All-Tournament Honoree
– Fiona Connolly represented Valpo on the All-Tournament Team at the CSU Invitational, as she averaged 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game over the Beacons’ trio of games in Cleveland.
– Connolly opened with her career-high 21 points and also tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds against Radford.
– She tied for game-high honors with 14 points versus Cleveland State, and closed the tournament with nine points and seven boards against St. Bonaventure.
The Tall and the Short
– This year’s Valpo roster features recent extremes on both ends of the height spectrum.
– Mor Shabtai and Mikayla Huffine both are listed at 5-4, making them the shortest Valpo players since 5-3 Rashida Ray (2007-11).
– On the flip side, Kamryn Winch and Milana Nenadic both check in at 6-3, making them the tallest Valpo players since 6-5 Nicole Johanson (2018-19).
International Flavor
– Valpo has a trio of international players on its 2025-26 roster: sophomore Mor Shabtai (Israel) and transfers Milana Nenadic (Ontario, Canada) and Kennedy Sproule (Manitoba, Canada).
– Prior to Shabtai’s arrival last year, the Valpo program hadn’t had an international player since Sharon Karungi (Uganda) roamed the paint from 2013-15.
Sister Act
– For the third straight season, the Beacons have a pair of sisters on their roster, as freshman Nuala Connolly joins senior sister Fiona on this year’s squad.
– The last two years featured identical twins Nevaeh and Saniya Jackson.
– Before that, the last set of sisters to suit up together in the Brown and Gold were the trio of Hamlet sisters: Annemarie (2013-16) overlapped with both older sister Elizabeth (2013-14) and younger sister Meredith (2015-19).
