ALABAMA SHAKES OFF SLOW START, DOWNS OKLAHOMA IN CFP OPENER

Ty Simpson threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns to overcome a slow start and help No. 9 Alabama rally for a 34-24 win over No. 8 Oklahoma on Friday in Norman, Okla., in the College Football Playoff opener.

The Crimson Tide (11-3) will take on top-ranked Indiana in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Alabama trailed Oklahoma (10-3) by 17 points in the first half but roared back to tie it then controlled the second half to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Crimson Tide became the first road team to win a CFP game on campus after all four home teams won in the opening round of last year’s inaugural 12-team field.

Alabama took the lead early in the third quarter when Simpson hit Lotzeir Brooks for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 24-17.

Brooks had five catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

After the Crimson Tide extended their lead to 10, Oklahoma answered, cutting the deficit to 27-24 on Deion Burks’ 37-yard touchdown catch from John Mateer two plays into the fourth quarter.

Alabama extended its lead, though, on Daniel Hill’s 6-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth. The score was set up by Germie Bernard’s 24-yard catch where he wrested the ball from the Sooners’ Jacobe Johnson at the Oklahoma 5.

Oklahoma’s Tate Sandell missed a pair of field goals late, barely pushing the first wide, then finishing just short on a 51-yard try with just more than a minute remaining, ending the Sooners’ chances of a comeback.

Mateer finished with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns while Burks finished with seven catches for 107 yards as Oklahoma outgained Alabama 362-260.

Mateer put Oklahoma on the board with an 8-yard touchdown run on the Sooners’ second drive, and Sandell’s 51-yard field goal made it 10-0 in the final minute of the first quarter.

Sandell, the Lou Groza Award winner as the nation’s top kicker, tied an FBS record with his eighth field goal of 50 of more yards on the season.

The Sooners extended their lead to 17-0 less than five minutes into the second quarter on Mateer’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Sategna III.

To that point, the Crimson Tide didn’t have a first down, going three-and-out on each of their first three possessions.

But then Alabama started turning the momentum.

Simpson led a 75-yard touchdown drive, putting the Crimson Tide on the board with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Brooks on fourth-and-2.

A blocked punt gave Alabama the ball at the Oklahoma 30, and the Crimson Tide made it a one-possession game with a 35-yard field goal by Conor Talty with just more than two minutes remaining in the half.

Alabama wasn’t done yet, as Zabien Brown picked off a Mateer pass to the flat and had plenty of clear space ahead of him, returning it 50 yards for a touchdown to tie the game heading into halftime.

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bills -10.5, Total 41.5
Series Rewind: The Browns have the 13-10 edge all-time (counting playoffs), but Buffalo has won three of the past four and five of seven in the series. However, it’s been since 2012 that the Bills won in Cleveland, falling short there in 2013 and 2019.

The Bills have at least 10 wins for the seventh straight season, the longest streak in franchise history. Next in their sights is seven straight years with a playoff trip; the Bills need one more win along with a loss by either Houston or Indianapolis in order to punch their ticket. Reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen leads the league’s top rushing offense (158.5 yards per game) and third-best scoring offense (29.4 ppg), as he has totaled 37 touchdowns to this point, 25 passing and 12 rushing. Dawson Knox had two touchdown receptions in last week’s crucial win over AFC East leader New England, and he could see additional playing time if fellow tight end Dalton Kincaid is hindered by his knee injury. Browns rookie QB Shedeur Sanders will face a tall task in challenging the Bills, who boast the second-stingiest passing defense (169.5 yards per game) in the NFL. Sanders’ fifth career game and fourth start was his worst so far, with 177 yards and three picks in last week’s 31-3 loss at Chicago. The Browns are not playoff-bound, but one storyline worth watching is Myles Garrett’s shot at breaking the single-season sacks record. He collected 1.5 sacks last week to boost his season total to 21.5, one shy of the record shared by Michael Strahan (in 2001) and T.J. Watt (in 2021).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-7) at Carolina Panthers (7-7)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Buccaneers -3, Total 48.5
Series Rewind: The Buccaneers walloped Carolina 48-14 last December and swept the 2024 season series to run their dominance in the series to nine wins in the past 10 games.

Since the start of the 2021 season, the Buccaneers can claim ownership of the South, holding at least a share of the division lead for 73 of the 87 weeks with four consecutive division titles. Carolina last won the division in 2015 but the Panthers share first place in the NFC South, matching Tampa Bay’s current 7-7 record with three weeks — and two games against the Buccaneers — left in the regular season. “We’re in the same position we’ve been in the past two or three years,” Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said of a tight race. “We have an opportunity. We still have everything right in front of us. … We’re playing meaningful games in December.” The Panthers might be early arrivals to the postseason conversation under second-year coach Dave Canales. Wins over NFC contenders — most recently beating the Los Angeles Rams, 31-28, on Nov. 30 — has helped shift the narrative. Canales and the Panthers are well aware of the final step necessary to realize a postseason goal: beat the division champs. The Buccaneers have won five consecutive meetings and during their 9-1 string over the past five years, Tampa outscored Carolina by 124 points (287-163). The Buccaneers have won only once since October, so their 1-5 record coming down the stretch has been troublesome. They’ve lost to NFC South rivals New Orleans and Atlanta in their past two games. Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield, a former Panther, was coached by Canales in Tampa before the Panthers hired him away in 2024. Mayfield should have a nice selection of weapons to work with after last week’s return of wide receiver Mike Evans. Coming back from a collarbone injury, Evans hauled in six catches for 132 yards in the Atlanta game and already had the Panthers’ full attention.

Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) at Dallas Cowboys (6-7-1)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Cowboys -1.5, Total 49.5
Series Rewind: The Chargers have won their past three road games in the series. Their last road loss against Dallas came in 1990 when the Cowboys played in Irving.

The Cowboys must win their three remaining regular-season games and have the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles lose all three of theirs to avoid missing the playoffs for the second straight season. The outlook isn’t looking good after Dallas allowed 78 total points while losing back-to-back games to the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. Dak Prescott leads the NFL with 3,931 passing yards while closing in on his fourth career 4,000-yard campaign. Tony Romo is the only Cowboys quarterback currently with four such seasons. Prescott ranks third with 26 touchdown passes, and he has been intercepted 10 times. Wideout CeeDee Lamb is 24 yards shy of his fifth straight 1,000-yard season. The Chargers are red-hot with six wins in their past seven games. Los Angeles can clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Cowboys along with some help from either the Las Vegas Raiders (against the Houston Texans) or San Francisco 49ers (vs. the Indianapolis Colts). The Chargers allowed just 239 yards in last week’s 16-13 road win over the Kansas City Chiefs. It marked the third straight game and sixth in the past seven that the Chargers gave up 20 or fewer points. Justin Herbert (3,191 yards) will play for the third straight week after undergoing left hand surgery.

Kansas City Chiefs (6-8) at Tennessee Titans (2-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Chiefs -3, Total 37.5
Series Rewind: Andy Reid is 3-9 all-time against the Titans. Tennessee interim head coach Mike McCoy is 2-6 all-time against the Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid isn’t in a tinsel-tossing mood days after losing Patrick Mahomes to a season-ending knee injury last Sunday. While Mahomes gets busy attacking post-surgery rehabilitation with a goal of getting on the field in September, the Titans are eager for any advantage to help further rookie QB Cam Ward’s development. Tennessee has been outscored by a league-worst 169 points with 24 fewer touchdowns than its opponents. The Chiefs have a three-game losing streak and lug the emotional letdown of losing Mahomes and what was left of faint playoff hopes last week in a 16-13 heartbreaker to the Chargers. Gardner Minshew takes the reins for the Chiefs with questions around the formation due to injuries at the wide receiver position. He went to TE Travis Kelce consistently in his cameo subbing for Mahomes last week. Kelce is 203 yards shy of 1,000 yards for the season and 13 receptions away from hitting 80 for the 10th year in a row. The Titans have their highest two-game point total of the season — 55. Kansas City put up 23 total points the past two weeks and was held under 275 total yards by the Chargers and Texans.

Minnesota Vikings (6-8) at New York Giants (2-12)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Vikings -2.5, Total 43.5
Series Rewind: What a difference a year makes. Minnesota opened the 2024 season with a 28-6 win against the Giants at MetLife Stadium when the starting QBs were Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Daniel Jones (New York).

A couple of 22-year-old quarterbacks go head-to-head as Minnesota’s J.J. McCarthy makes his ninth NFL start and New York’s Jaxson Dart makes his 10th. The Vikings have followed up a four-game losing streak with two straight wins against the NFC East, with McCarthy throwing five touchdowns and just one interception in victories against the Commanders and Cowboys. The Giants have lost eight in a row and are 0-2 against the NFC North with losses to the Bears and Packers. Dart leads all rookie QBs in TD passes (13) and ranks second in passing yards (1,802). Vikings star Justin Jefferson hasn’t caught a touchdown pass since Week 9 and hasn’t topped 100 yards since Week 5. New York first-round pick LB Abdul Carter is coming off a monster game vs. Washington and is looking for his third straight game with a sack. Giants LB Brian Burns is second in the NFL with 13 sacks. McCarthy has been sacked 24 times in eight games.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-10) at Miami Dolphins (6-8)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Bengals -4.5, Total 47.5
Series Rewind: The Dolphins lead the all-time series 18-8, but the Bengals won the most recent game in the series (27-15 in 2022) and have won three of the past five over Miami.

While Cincinnati and Miami were both eliminated from playoff contention with their losses last week, they’re approaching that news in vastly different ways. The Dolphins are benching starting QB Tua Tagavailoa, who has a league-leading 15 interceptions and had just 65 passing yards through three quarters of Monday’s 28-15 loss at Pittsburgh. Quinn Ewers, a seventh-round pick in April’s draft, will make his first career start against the Bengals. He came off the bench to complete 5 of 8 passes for 53 yards in his first career appearance Oct. 19 at Cleveland. He’ll likely be helped by breakout running back De’Von Achane, who has 105-plus scrimmage yards in six straight games and a touchdown in 10 of his last 11 home games. The Bengals, on the other hand, are sticking with quarterback Joe Burrow despite not having any remaining postseason stakes. Cincinnati was shut out for the first time in a Burrow start last week, falling 24-0 at home to the Ravens. In his first three starts back from a toe injury that sidelined him for nine games, Burrow has 770 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. With 132 yards last week, receiver Ja’Marr Chase became just the second player in NFL history (along with Randy Moss) to amass 6,500 receiving yards and 50 touchdown catches in his first five seasons.

New York Jets (3-11) at New Orleans Saints (4-10)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Saints -5.5, Total 40.5
Series Rewind: These teams have faced off just five times in the past 20 years. New Orleans has won four of those games, including the past two, to claim an 8-6 lead in the all-time series.

While both New York and New Orleans are nearing the end of underwhelming seasons, they probably feel a bit differently about the rookie quarterbacks they’ll start in this week’s matchup. Saints second-round pick Tyler Shough enters coming off back-to-back wins over division opponents, the team’s first multiple-game winning streak of the season. After rushing for 55 yards and two scores Dec. 7 vs. Tampa Bay, Shough completed a career-high 75% of his passes for 272 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 20-17 win over Carolina. New Orleans is 3-4 when Shough starts after it was 1-6 with Spencer Rattler at the helm. With 52 more receiving yards, Saints running back Alvin Kamara would become the fifth player in NFL history with 5,000 rushing and receiving yards in his career. Jets rookie QB Brady Cook has been forced into action due to injuries to Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields. He had a touchdown and three interceptions in his first career start last week vs. Jacksonville and has thrown 339 yards and five interceptions in his first two games. Jets coach Aaron Glenn fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks this week after the defense allowed 48 points in the loss to the Jaguars. New York is 30th in scoring defense (28.4 points per game) and last in takeaways (three), with no interceptions this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars (10-4) at Denver Broncos (12-2)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Broncos -3.5, Total 46.5
Series Rewind: The Broncos have won four of the past five games to take an 8-6 lead in the series. The road team has won the past four times Denver and Jacksonville faced off.

The Broncos became the first AFC team to punch their playoff ticket with last week’s 34-26 win over Green Bay, their 11th straight to tie the franchise record. Things don’t get easier from here with a Jacksonville team that has won five straight games coming to town this week. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw a career-high five touchdowns and ran for a sixth in last week’s 48-20 beatdown of the Jets. After he had 11 interceptions in the first 11 games of the season, Lawrence has nine TDs and no picks in the past three games. Jacksonville has scored 35-plus points in three of its last five games. While the Jaguars have a one-game cushion in the AFC South, Denver has a one-game cushion in the race for the AFC No. 1 seed with its win last week paired with New England’s loss to Buffalo. Broncos QB Bo Nix tied his career high with four touchdowns last week, as Denver outscored the Packers 20-3 over the final 25 minutes of the game. The Broncos’ defense leads the league with 58 sacks, 10 more than any other team and just off the pace of breaking the Bears’ NFL record of 72 sacks in 1984. Jacksonville’s defense had three interceptions last week to bring its season tally to 18, second in the league.

Atlanta Falcons (5-9) at Arizona Cardinals (3-11)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Falcons -2.5, Total 47.5
Series Rewind: The Falcons are 1-9 in the desert, including a wild-card playoff loss in the 2008 season. Since the Cardinals left St. Louis in 1988, Atlanta’s lone win at Arizona was a 34-14 victory on Sept. 30, 2001.

Arizona is on a six-game losing streak and hasn’t won a home game since Week 2 against the Panthers. Atlanta has won two of its last three road games, including a 29-28 win at Tampa Bay in Week 15. Both teams are playing out the string with backup quarterbacks, with 37-year-old Kirk Cousins leading the Falcons against journeyman Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals. Cousins turned back the clock with a season-high 373 yards and three TDs against the Bucs, while Brissett leads the NFL with 2,708 passing yards since replacing Kyler Murray in Week 6. Bijan Robinson has been a bright spot for Atlanta, leading the NFL with 1,858 yards from scrimmage, and TE Kyle Pitts is coming off an epic 11-catch, 166-yard, three-touchdown game at Tampa. Cardinals counterpart Trey McBride just became the first tight end in NFL history with back-to-back 100-catch seasons. Falcons edge James Pearce has recorded a sack in six straight games, two shy of the NFL rookie record (Jevon Kearse, 1999).

Las Vegas Raiders (2-12) at Houston Texans (9-5)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Texans -14.5, Total 37.5
Series Rewind: The Raiders routed Houston 38-20 in 2022 when they had Derek Carr (241 passing yards, one TD), Josh Jacobs (143 rushing yards, three TDs) and Davante Adams (eight catches, 95 yards) on the roster.

The Texans are currently in possession of the final AFC wild-card spot but have their eyes on overtaking the Jacksonville Jaguars and winning the AFC South. Houston has rattled off six straight wins and registered a season high for points last week with a 40-20 rout of the Arizona Cardinals. C.J. Stroud passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns with Nico Collins collecting two of the scoring receptions. The Texans also have allowed 20 or fewer points in five straight games behind the best all-around defense in the NFL. Defensive ends Danielle Hunter (12 sacks) and Will Anderson Jr. (10.5) are each enjoying big campaigns. The Raiders have been big disappointments in Pete Carroll’s first season as coach and are tied with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants for the league’s worst record. Las Vegas has dropped eight consecutive games, twice losing 31-0, first to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday. Kenny Pickett passed for just 64 yards and the Raiders had just 75 total yards and seven first downs. Rookie Ashton Jeanty has rushing outputs of 31, 30 and 35 yards over the past three games. Linebacker Devin White (149 tackles) and defensive end Maxx Crosby (10 sacks) have been shining standouts during the dismal campaign.

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6) at Detroit Lions (8-6)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Lions -6.5, Total 51.5
Series Rewind: The Steelers have won five of the past six meetings, but the most recent game in 2021 went to overtime and ended in a 16-16 tie.

The rapid release of Rams veteran QB Matthew Stafford stunted the Lions’ pass rush last week, prompting similar concerns for head coach Dan Campbell as the Lions hit Week 16 knowing there’s only one possible way into the postseason: win three consecutive games and hope for chaos to strike the seven teams ahead of them in the NFC playoff picture. Both coaches referenced expectations for a physical game won in the trenches this week. The Lions put up 34 points in a loss to the Rams last week and there’s as much power as there is pomp in the Detroit scheme. Pittsburgh gears up for Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has 1,100 rushing yards, 494 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns in 2025. The Lions average 131.1 yards per game on the ground and the Steelers are giving up 120.9 rushing yards per game as part of the league’s 28th-ranked defense in total yards allowed (383.3 per game). Aaron Rodgers and his snappy delivery make pressuring the pocket a long day’s work but Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson leads the NFL in pressures. He’s getting help from a group he dubbed “castoffs,” which includes the team’s leader in catches, No. 2 running back Kenneth Gainwell. The Steelers are likely to emphasize Jaylen Warren and Gainwell due to the balance they can bring an inconsistent offense. Gainwell had 126 yards from scrimmage Monday in the Steelers’ win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

New England Patriots (11-3) at Baltimore Ravens (7-7)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Ravens -3, Total 48.5
Series Rewind: The teams have split the past eight meetings after the Patriots won seven of the first eight (including playoffs).

The Patriots are 6-0 on the road this season and stand one game behind the Denver Broncos in the battle for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. New England will know when it takes the field Sunday night whether it can clinch a playoff spot with a win. Results involving the Indianapolis Colts (vs. San Francisco 49ers) and Houston Texans (vs. Las Vegas Raiders) are in play. Drake Maye passed for a season-low 155 yards in last week’s 35-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The setback ended a 10-game winning streak. Rookie TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 148 yards — one more than his previous high — and two touchdowns. Baltimore is two games behind the Texans in the wild-card chase so its best bet to reach the playoffs is overtaking the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. Baltimore is one game behind but will play at Pittsburgh in the final week of the season. The Ravens halted a two-game losing streak with a strong 24-0 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week. The Bengals had clobbered Baltimore 17 days earlier. Derrick Henry rushed for 100 yards on just 11 carries and ranks fifth in the NFL with 1,125 yards. Linebacker Roquan Smith racked up 14 tackles and leads the squad with 114.

AJ DYBANTSA POWERS FOR CAREER-BEST 35 AS NO. 10 BYU DUMPS ABILENE CHRISTIAN

AJ Dybantsa scored a career high 35 points and collected six rebounds to lead No. 10 BYU to a 85-67 victory over Abilene Christian on Friday night.

Richie Saunders added 21 points and Rob Wright III chipped in 10 to lead the Cougars (11-1) to their eighth straight victory. BYU shot 59.5% from the field and went 29 of 40 from the free-throw line.

Cbo Newton led Abilene Christian with 23 points and Bradyn Hubbard added 12. The Wildcats (7-5) lost to their second consecutive Big 12 opponent (Arizona), even after forcing 18 turnovers.

After BYU trailed much of the first half, Dybantsa helped the Cougars take control after halftime. He scored BYU’s first five baskets coming out of the locker room — highlighted by a thunderous dunk off a steal that put the Cougars up 54-42.

Newton spurred a 10-0 run for Abilene Christian with a basket off a steal that cut the deficit to 54-52. The Wildcats drew no closer.

BYU held Abilene Christian scoreless for nearly five minutes and made five straight baskets, culminating in a layup from Wright that extended the Cougars’ lead to 66-52 with 7:55 left.

Khadim Mboup made his first career start for BYU after Keba Keita sat out with an undisclosed illness. The Cougars struggled to get going offensively without Keita in the post. BYU had 12 first-half turnovers.

Abilene Christian forced six turnovers through the first eight minutes and limited BYU to just two baskets. On the other end, Cbo Newton made three baskets and Joseph Venzant drained a 3-pointer to help the Wildcats take a 17-11 lead midway through the first half.

The Cougars erased the deficit behind an 8-0 run and took their first lead at 19-17 on a corner three from Rob Wright III. Later, Dybantsa threw down a pair of dunks to fuel another 10-3 spurt that put BYU up 43-36 at halftime.

NBA ROUNDUP: ANTHONY EDWARDS LEADS WOLVES’ RALLY PAST THUNDER

Anthony Edwards scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied for a 112-107 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday in Minneapolis.

Julius Randle added 19 points and eight rebounds for Minnesota, which closed the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run in the final minute. Donte DiVincenzo and Naz Reid scored 15 points apiece as the Timberwolves won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Oklahoma City led 107-104 with 1:09 remaining after Holmgren sank a pair of free throws. Randle cut the deficit to two when he made the first of two free-throw attempts with 53.1 seconds to go. DiVincenzo grabbed the rebound of a miss on the second foul shot, and Edwards put the Timberwolves on top for good when he drilled a step-back 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds to go.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points and dished seven assists to lead the Thunder, who lost for only the third time in 28 games this season. Jalen Williams scored 17 points, and Chet Holmgren and Ajay Mitchell finished with 14 points apiece.

Spurs 126, Hawks 98

Victor Wembanyama had 26 points and 12 rebounds to help visiting San Antonio to a win over Atlanta.

The Spurs have won four straight against the Hawks and improved to 10-5 on the road. Wembanyama, in his fourth game back since missing 12 games with a calf strain, played only 21:28. Devin Vassell scored 18 points with seven rebounds, Stephon Castle had 17 points and seven assists and Keldon Johnson added 13 off the bench.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the Hawks with 23 points and Jalen Johnson had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his 18th double-double.

76ers 116, Knicks 107

VJ Edgecombe scored seven points down the stretch, guiding visiting Philadelphia to a victory over New York.

Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 30 points and nine assists, while Edgecombe supplied 23 points. Andre Drummond chipped in with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Sixers, who were outrebounded 57-36 without Joel Embiid (illness). Philadelphia won for the fifth time in seven games.

Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns provided 22 points apiece for the Knicks. New York had won its previous six games (in addition to the NBA Cup championship game, which doesn’t count toward the regular-season standings) and had been 13-1 at home this season. Mitchell Robinson set season highs with 21 points and 16 rebounds for New York.

Celtics 129, Heat 116

Derrick White made 9 of 14 3-point attempts and scored a game-high 33 points while leading Boston to a home victory over short-handed Miami.

Boston outscored Miami 37-27 in the fourth. The Celtics made 10 3-pointers in the final period, sinking each of their first six attempts from behind the arc. Jaylen Brown added 30 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Boston, which ended a two-game losing streak. Boston received a 15-point performance from Sam Hauser, who made 5 of 6 3-point attempts.

Kel’el Ware led the Heat with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Bam Adebayo finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Norman Powell scored 18 points, and Kasparas Jakucionis added 17.

Bulls 136, Cavaliers 125

Josh Giddey scored 17 points and Coby White had 13 points, six rebounds and a season-high nine assists for the Bulls, who won for the third time in their last 11 games.

With star guard Donovan Mitchell sidelined due to an illness, Darius Garland paced Cleveland with a season-high 35 points and added eight assists, while Jarrett Allen had 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Cavaliers have dropped nine of their past 14 games and are 1-5 on their home court since Nov. 30.

NHL NEWS

NHL ROUNDUP: PANTHERS RALLY LATE, TOP HURRICANES IN SHOOTOUT

Sam Reinhart and Evan Rodrigues scored in the shootout and Sergei Bobrovsky made three stops on four attempts, as the host Florida Panthers rallied to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Friday night in Sunrise, Fla.

Florida trailed 3-0 with less than 10 minutes left and was down 3-1 with under three minutes remaining. Brad Marchand made it 3-1 with his 20th of the season, Sam Bennett got it to 3-2 and Reinhart tied the game with just 52 seconds remaining. Marchand extended an impressive run with his 13th straight 20-goal season.

Florida’s rally ruined a record-breaking attempt by Carolina rookie goalie Brandon Bussi, who had his nine-game win streak snapped despite making a career-high 38 saves. Bussi’s streak still ties Cam Ward (2008-2009) for the longest win streak by a Carolina goalie. Bobrovsky made 26 saves for his fifth straight victory.

Sebastian Aho scored twice and Jordan Staal had one for the Hurricanes, who also got two assists each from Seth Jarvis and Andrei Svechnikov and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.

Avalanche 3, Jets 2

Brent Burns and Martin Necas scored goals in the first period, Parker Kelly had the eventual game-winner and Colorado beat Winnipeg in Denver.

Scott Wedgewood made 20 saves and Josh Manson had two assists for the Avalanche, who have won 12 straight home games, the second-longest streak in franchise history. Colorado is 14-0-2 at home this season and 20-1-4 overall in the past 25 games.

Morgan Barron and Mark Scheifele produced goals and Connor Hellebuyck turned away 23 shots for the Jets, who have lost six of their past seven games (1-5-1) and 12 of the past 15 (3-10-2).

Stars 8, Ducks 3

Oskar Back and Roope Hintz each scored in the opening five minutes of Dallas’ four-goal first period and the visiting Stars cruised to a victory over Anaheim.

Sam Steel and Thomas Harley also scored in the opening period as the Stars won their third consecutive game while matching their season high for goals in a game. Jason Robertson delivered two goals and an assist while Adam Erne and Ilya Lyubushkin also scored as Dallas improved to an NHL-best 13-2-4 on the road. Hintz and Harley each added an assist.

Ryan Poehling, Beckett Sennecke and Mikael Granlund each scored goals for the Ducks, who are 9-10-1 since opening the season 11-3-1. Anaheim goalie Lukas Dostal stopped 3 of 7 shots before he was pulled in the first period in favor of Petr Mrazek, who turned aside 14 of 18 shots.

Canucks 4, Islanders 1

Kiefer Sherwood registered his third career hat trick, when Vancouver continued its surge following the Quinn Hughes trade by beating New York in Elmont, N.Y.

The hat trick was the second of the season for Sherwood. David Kampf opened the scoring in the first for the Canucks, who have won three straight — all on the road — since dealing Hughes, their captain and leading scorer, to the Minnesota Wild last Saturday. Goalie Thatcher Demko carried a shutout deep into the third and finished with 22 saves.

Anders Lee scored with 5:05 left for the Islanders, who have lost consecutive games for the first time since a three-game skid from Nov. 26-30. Goalie Ilya Sorokin recorded 26 saves.

Devils 2, Mammoth 1

Stefan Noesen scored the go-ahead goal at the 4:20 mark of the third period and Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves as New Jersey completed a sweep of its two-game western road trip with a victory over Utah Mammoth in Salt Lake City.

Connor Brown also scored a goal and Nico Hischier had two assists for New Jersey, which moved into third place in the Metropolitan Division with the win.

Daniil But scored a goal and Karel Vejmelka stopped 20 of 22 shots for Utah, which lost for the second time in three games.

BOXING NEWS

ANTHONY JOSHUA DELIVERS 6TH-ROUND KO OF JAKE PAUL IN HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT

Despite the weight discrepancy between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua, it took six rounds before the heavyweight main event on Netflix was settled with a devastating finish.

A slow start from both men was erased by 1:31 into the sixth round when the 36-year-old Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) landed a clean right hand to the jaw of the 28-year-old Paul (12-2, 7 KOs) to close the deal via KO at the Kaseya Center in Miami Friday night.

Joshua out-landed Paul 48-16 with four knockdowns.

Joshua was not thrilled with the way he fought, admitting he should have finished Paul sooner. But he showed mutual respect to Paul following the fight, lifting his competitor’s arm and saying Paul “kept trying to find a way.”

“As I said, I need to give (Paul) a systematic breakdown,” Joshua said.

Joshua added he would entertain a fight with Tyson Fury, should he come out of retirement next year.

“If Tyson Fury is as serious as he thinks he is, and he wants to put down his Twitter fingers and put on some gloves and come and fight one of the realest fighters that will take on any challenge, step in the ring with me next if you’re a real bad boy,” Joshua said. ” … Let’s see you in the ring and talk with your fists.”

Paul said he felt fine overall after the loss, although he admitted that he believed he had sustained a broken jaw.

“We’re going to heal the broken jaw, come back and fight people my weight, go for the cruiserweight title,” Paul said.

Round 1 saw an extremely slow start from both Paul and Joshua with only one meaningful jab thrown from Paul up until the final 25 seconds. Joshua nearly found the knockout shot before running out of time, as the broadcast team called it a “moral victory” for Paul to make it out of the opening round.

In the second round, Joshua became visibly frustrated as Paul continued to clinch up and stay away from Joshua’s right hand. Neither man found significant strikes as the round ended with both men beginning to show fatigue. A combined four punches were landed in the round.

Round 3 was more of a non-offensive affair as Paul continued to circle away from Joshua. Only 10 combined punches found a home for both men, with Paul’s jab continuing to get through. But, once again, no fight-ending sequences from either man.

Round 4 saw far more extracurricular activity from Paul (falling down, slipping to a knee, attempting to wrestle Joshua) than actual boxing. There was visible anger from Joshua as well as referee Chris Young, who called them together and told them, “The fans ain’t pay to see this crap.”

Round 5 may have been Joshua’s best round of the fight as he secured a knockdown on Paul, but couldn’t put Paul away entirely despite a second knockdown with under a minute left.

Round 6 saw the final chapter of Paul-Joshua, as a right hand made the difference in the KO for the former two-time unified heavyweight champion from England, delivering Joshua his first win in the United States.

INDIANA PACERS BASKETBALL NEWS

GAME REWIND: PACERS 113, KNICKS 114

The Pacers hosted the Knicks on Thursday in the first meeting between the two teams since Indiana’s Eastern Conference Finals win last season. The Knicks were rolling after an NBA Cup Championship on Tuesday, and Indiana was hungry for a win after a two-game losing streak.

The Pacers fell to the Knicks in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, 114-113, extending their losing streak to three games.

Two fouls in under three minutes sent OG Anunoby to New York’s bench early, and Indiana opened up an eight-point lead halfway through the first quarter. Indiana’s 21-4 run, highlighted by a Pascal Siakam alley-oop pass to a cutting Jay Huff, put the Pacers ahead by as many as 16 points.

Huff wasn’t the only Pacer to detonate on the Knicks – Isaiah Jackson threw down a demoralizing one-handed jam that forced a Knicks’ timeout with under two minutes to play in the opening frame.

A no-nonsense first quarter from Indiana set the tone for the contest, and the Pacers led after one, 36-25. Indiana’s 36 points in the opening period was just two points shy of its season-high mark of 38 set against the Hornets in November.

Tyler Kolek manufactured a run for the Knicks early in the second quarter in which New York cut the Pacers’ lead to just four points. Buckets from Isaiah Jackson and T.J. McConnell held off the Knicks, but Mikal Bridges hit a mid-range jump shot to bring them back within three points with just over six minutes before halftime.

Jalen Brunson’s production late in the second quarter kept New York afloat, and he entered the locker room with a game-high 18 points. Nembhard dueled Brunson down the stretch, and had 17 points at the halftime break. Siakam found a groove in the second period, and had 11 points at halftime – nine of which he scored in the second quarter.

The Pacers led the Knicks after the first half of play, 62-59.

The Blue and Gold led at halftime, but saw their shooting percentage dip in the second quarter. Indiana shot 70 percent from the field through the first period – 14-for-20 from the floor – but converted just 31 percent of its shots in the second.

That trend didn’t continue into the third. By the six-minute mark of the third quarter, Indiana was shooting 57 percent in the period and 49 percent overall. The Pacers continued to struggle from deep, but the mid-range was kind to them.

A 19-8 run put the Pacers up by 13 points with just over three minutes left in the third quarter when Nembhard drilled his third triple of the night to give Indiana a 16-point lead.

Another run by the Knicks – led this time by Bridges – cut that lead down to six points to close the third quarter. Indiana won the third, and held the lead heading into the fourth, 92-86.

New York opened the fourth quarter on a 11-2 run that obliterated Indiana’s lead. By the 8:19 mark of the final frame, the Knicks led by three points.

Siakam went on a personal 7-2 run, earning the lead back as he enforced his will on the Knicks. The Pacers were ahead, 101-99, with seven minutes left on the game clock.

Connections from deep for both Nembhard and Quenton Jackson had Indiana firmly in the driver’s seat with five minutes remaining as Indiana led, 109-102.

Anunoby’s 3-pointer with four minutes to go brought the Knicks within three, and Brunson hit a turnaround shot to make it a one-point game with three minutes to play, 109-108.

Tied at 111, Siakam worked Anunoby near the elbow. He rose, turned to the basket, and fired just to see his shot fall well short of the rim. He’d been hit on the arm, fouled by Anunoby, and earned a trip to the free throw line to put the Pacers up two points. He converted both shots, and Indiana led 113-111 with 16.9 seconds to play.

Brunson danced around the 3-point line and launched a shot that ripped through the net, giving New York a single point lead with 4.4 seconds left. Indiana called a timeout, and returned to the floor for an attempt at a game-winning look.

Siakam tripped coming towards the ball, and Anunoby overtook him, stealing the ball and running the length of the court as time expired. Indiana fell to New York, 114-113, led by Brunson’s 25 points. Nembhard led Indiana with 31, and Siakam contributed 26 points.

The Pacers are back in action on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 7:00 PM ET as they travel to New Orleans for a matchup with the Pelicans.

Inside the Numbers

Both teams shot 46 percent from the field, but Indiana made 32 percent of its 3-pointers to New York’s 40 percent.

The Pacers committed 14 turnovers leading to 17 Knicks points, while the Knicks committed 16 leading to 23 Indiana points.

Indiana grabbed 52 rebounds to New York’s 46.

The Knicks reserves outscored the Pacers bench 42-24.

PURDUE FOOTBALL NEWS

ODOM ANNOUNCES NEW COACHES AND STAFF CHANGES FOR 2026 SEASON

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football Head Coach Barry Odom has announced several staff changes as the Boilermakers look ahead to 2026. Kevin Kane returns to Purdue as the program’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, while Zach Crabtree joins the Boilermakers as the new offensive line coach. Cornell Ford and Bilal Marshall take on different roles with the program, while defensive backs coach Charles Clark has been elevated to defensive passing game coordinator in addition to mentoring the Purdue secondary.

Ford moves to the running backs room to coach the Purdue backfield, a position he has coached for nine seasons over his career. Marshall, a former Purdue receiver who returned to West Lafayette for the 2025 campaign as an offensive analyst under Odom, has been promoted to an assistant coach that will guide the Boilermaker wideouts. After coaching a secondary that made 35 pass breakups as a unit and included Tahj Ra-El tying for the team lead in tackles, Clark takes on a larger role with the overall pass defense heading into the 2026 season.

Kane is back in West Lafayette after spending the past season as the nickel and outside linebackers coach at Minnesota. During his time up north, the Golden Gophers ranked second in the Big Ten Conference in tackles-for-loss and sacks, while also ranking 11th and 13th in the country, respectively.

“We’re excited to have Coach Kane join our staff and add to our program in all areas,” said Odom “I’ve known Coach Kane as a player, coach and have always respected the way he performed. Over the years, we have shared ideas and philosophies, and I know what he can accomplish. In speaking with him about this opportunity, I could feel a great sense of hunger and excitement about leading the Purdue Defense. I’m excited for his wife Theresa and their kids to be part of our Boilermaker Family.”

Following a season as the offensive line coach at Fresno State, Crabtree reunites with offensive coordinator Josh Henson. Crabtree spent two seasons under Henson at USC as an assistant offensive line coach. He also played under Henson as a First Team All-Big 12 offensive lineman at Oklahoma State before going to the NFL and signing with the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I’m excited to have Coach Crabtree join our coaching staff, said Odom “I have watched his groups play at a high level over the past couple of years, and he will bring great value to our offensive line play as well as the overall program. I know he and his wife Megan are excited to be Boilermakers.”

As an offensive analyst in 2025, Marshall assisted in coaching the Purdue wide receivers. He helped guide the duo of Michael Jackson III and Nitro Tuggle, who combined for 1,070 yards to lead the Boilermaker receiving corps. Marshall returned to his alma mater, as he was a Purdue wide receiver from 2012-16.

“Coach Marshall has been an immediate impact for our players and organization,” said Odom. “He obviously has connections at Purdue that run deep with him being a former player, adding a great knowledge of the WR position as well as offensive football. I am excited for his influence to grow in our program. He, his wife Alexa and their son Ryder are proud Boilermakers.”

ABOUT KANE

Kane, Purdue defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, returns to Purdue under Odom after spending the 2025 campaign as the nickels and outside linebackers coach at Minnesota.

Following an All-Big 12 Conference career as a linebacker at Kansas (2002-05), Kane has spent two decades on the sidelines building some of the most formidable defenses in the nation at Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Kansas, SMU and Illinois.

In his brief stint at Minnesota before deciding to return to Purdue, Golden Gophers ranked second in the Big Ten in tackles-for-loss and sacks, while also ranking 11th and 13th in the country, respectively.

Kane served as Purdue’s defensive coordinator for two seasons (2023-24) before heading to Minnesota. In his first season in West Lafayette, the Purdue defense recorded 35 sacks, the most since 2004 and the third-most in program history. Individually, Dillon Thieneman became an All-American (Third Team – AP) and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after setting school records for interceptions (6) and solo tackles (74) by a freshman; both marks ranked third nationally by any defender in college football throughout the 2023 campaign. On the edges of the defense, the duo of Nic Scourton and Kydran Jenkins had more sacks and TFLs than any other teammates in the conference, as both Boilermakers cracked the Big Ten’s Top 3 in both categories. Scourton led the conference with 10 sacks, becoming the eighth Boilermaker in history to crack double digits and the first since 2010.

Kane led Illinois’ group of outside linebackers to new heights in 2022, as Seth Coleman and Gabe Jacas combined for the most quarterback hits in the nation among edge duos and both were named All-Big Ten Conference Honorable Mention. Jacas was a Freshman All-American after totaling 31 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, and 4.0 sacks, the second-most sacks by an Illini true freshman in program history. Coleman was sixth on the team in tackles with 41 and second in sacks with 4.5, as Illinois produced its best record in 15 years and earned a berth in the ReliaQuest Bowl, the Illini’s best bowl since the 2007 season.

Kane was a part of one of the best defensive turnarounds in the nation in 2021, helping Illinois to a 5-7 record and ranked wins over No. 7 Penn State and No. 20 Minnesota. Illinois’ scoring defense (31st from 97th), third down defense (31st from 89th), and total defense (52nd from 114th) all improved more than 50 spots in the national rankings from 2020. The Illini made massive gains in the Big Ten defensive rankings, as well, jumping nine-or-more spots in scoring defense (4th from 14th), touchdowns allowed (3rd from 14th), yards allowed per game (5th from 14th), and passing yards allowed per game (1st from 10th).

Prior to his two seasons at Illinois, Kane was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at SMU for three years. Kane joined the SMU staff in 2018 and in his first two seasons led the Mustangs to several national top 25 rankings, including the No. 1 ranking for sacks per game (3.92) and No. 3 ranking in tackles for loss (8.5 avg) in 2019.

He made the move to SMU after spending the 2016 and 2017 seasons as the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois. That was his second stint at NIU, having served in multiple capacities for the Huskies from 2011-14. During the 2015 season, Kane coached linebackers at Kansas.

Kane helped lead the Huskies to three Mid-American Conference Championships and five bowl appearances during his time in DeKalb, including a win in the 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl over Arkansas State. The Huskies ranked 26th in the nation in total defense in 2017, leading the nation in tackles for loss (8.8) and ranking second in sacks (3.31) and fourth in defensive TDs (5). NIU ranked seventh nationally in yards per play allowed at just 4.52, trailing only Alabama, Clemson, Wisconsin, Washington, Ohio State and Michigan.

NIU also ranked in the top 20 in third down conversion percentage defense (11th), rushing defense (16th) and first downs allowed (19th). In 2016, NIU ranked 17th nationally and led the MAC in red zone defense.

Kane made the move to NIU after three seasons (2008-10) at Wisconsin, serving as a graduate assistant (2008-09) and quality control assistant (2010). While at Wisconsin, the Badgers earned berths to the 2008 and 2009 Champs Sports Bowls and 2011 Rose Bowl.

His coaching career began in 2006 at Kansas, where he spent two seasons as a student assistant for his alma mater. He helped the Jayhawks to the 2008 Orange Bowl under Mark Mangino.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Kansas, Kane played linebacker for the Jayhawks, earning All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades from the Associated Press as a junior and senior. He helped Kansas to a pair of bowl appearances, including a win in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl. Kane was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and was named team captain as a senior. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, where he helped lead the Hawklets to a Missouri state championship as a junior. Kane earned his master’s degree in education at the University of Wisconsin in 2010.

He and wife Theresa have two sons, Jack and Colin, and one daughter, Nora.

ABOUT CRABTREE

Crabtree joined the Boilermakers after spending the 2025 campaign as the offensive line coach at Fresno State.

Under Crabtree’s tutelage, Jacob Spomer became a Group of Five All-American (HERO Sports) and First Team All-Mountain West offensive lineman. According to Pro Football Focus, Spomer was the highest rated center overall in the Mountain West and had the highest pass blocking rating among Mountain West centers as well.

Crabtree arrived at Fresno State from USC, where he was with the Trojans for three years. Prior to the 2024 season, he was named assistant offensive line coach under offensive coordinator Josh Henson. Crabtree spent the 2023 and 2022 seasons as a graduate assistant.

In 2021, Crabtree mentored the offensive line as an analyst at Oklahoma State. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Baylor (2019-20), working with the offensive line.

To close out his playing career, Crabtree played for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-18 but had to retire due to a knee injury.

Crabtree had a stellar collegiate career as an offensive lineman at Oklahoma State for five seasons (2013-17), which included playing for Henson and starting 46 games at right tackle. As a senior in 2017, he earned First Team All-Big 12 (Coaches) and Second Team All-Big 12 (AP) honors. Crabtree was also honored by the Oklahoma State coaching staff with the Vernon Grant Award twice throughout his career, an accolade recognizing outstanding leadership, spirit and enthusiasm. As a junior in 2016, he made the All-Big 12 Second Team (Coaches). Off the field, he landed on the Big 12 All-Academic Second Team in 2014.

Crabtree received his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Oklahoma State in 2017. He prepped at Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Texas.

ABOUT MARSHALL

Marshall returned to his alma mater prior to the 2025 season, joining Odom’s staff as an offensive analyst that worked with the wide receivers.

Prior to coming back to Purdue, Marshall spent two seasons as West Virginia’s wide receivers coach. In 2023, the Mountaineers had two players ranked in the nation Top 16 in yards per reception (Hudson Clement – third with 21.82 yards per reception and Devin Carter – 16th with 18.56 yards per reception). Clement led the team with 177 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his first career start against Duquesne, joining Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey as the only Mountaineers to reach 175 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in one game. West Virginia averaged 15.02 passing yards per completion, ranking No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 3 among Power 5 schools.

Marshall rejoined the Mountaineer Football coaching staff after serving as the wide receivers coach at VMI in 2022. While at VMI, his leading receiver, Chance Knox, had 58 catches for 535 yards and two touchdowns. He mentored Isaiah Lemmond, who earned All-Southern Conference Freshman honors after finishing second on the team with 29 catches for 453 receiving yards and a touchdown. Lemmond recorded two or more catches in the last six games, including six against No. 9 Chattanooga, Furman and No. 10 Samford.

Prior to VMI, Marshall was an offensive graduate assistant at West Virginia (2020-21), working with the wide receivers. In 2021, the Mountaineers had four receivers with 30 or more receptions, three with more than 500 yards receiving and four with multiple touchdowns. Two of his receivers, Winston Wright Jr. and Bryce Ford-Wheaton, were named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention performers.

As a senior, Marshall was the team’s second-leading receiver with 40 catches for 477 yards and three touchdowns.

Marshall, a native of Miami Gardens, Florida, earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 2016 in organizational leadership and his master’s degree in communications studies from West Virginia in 2021.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Ella Riggs matched the Purdue Fort Wayne women’s basketball field goal percentage record on Friday (Dec. 19) with a 10-for-11 performance in a 104-31 victory over NAIA foe Aquinas.

While Riggs matched the record, Alana Nelson also had just one miss on her 11 attempts, which put her in a tie for the third-best single-game performance of all time. Nelson finished 9-for-10 and 6-for-7 from the 3-point line, the latter of which is fourth-best in Mastodon history. Riggs set a new career-high with 24 points and Nelson matched her season-high with 26.

The Mastodons never trailed against the Saints, putting together a 35-9 first quarter. Their 35 points were the most in a quarter since putting up 39 against Great Lakes Christian in 2023. The Mastodons were at their best in the fourth quarter when they went on a 21-0 scoring run that lasted 6:27 and saw eight different players score.

The 104 points are the 12th-most a Mastodon team has scored in a game and Friday marked the sixth time in the Maria Marchesano era her team scored 100 or more. Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 9-4 and has won its last five in a row. Aquinas remained 6-6 after playing Friday’s game as an exhibition. The Mastodons are now 7-0 at home this season. Head Coach Roger Powell Jr.: Roger Powell Jr. (28-49) is in his third season as the head coach of the Valpo men’s basketball program. After helping guide Gonzaga to a 121-13 record during his four seasons as an assistant coach, Powell returned to Valpo, where he was part of head coach Bryce Drew’s staff from 2011-2016 and led the team to 124 wins in five seasons, including a program-record 30 victories and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title game appearance in 2015-16. He was part of head coach Mark Few’s Gonzaga staff as the Bulldogs reached the 2021 national championship game after winning their first 31 games of the season. During Powell’s first season on staff in 2019-20, Gonzaga was 31-2 at the time the NCAA college basketball season was halted due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of his final three seasons on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances and the aforementioned trip to the 2021 national title game. Prior to his arrival at Gonzaga, Powell served as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt University under Bryce Drew from 2016-2019. During his stint as an assistant at Valpo, he was part of four Horizon League regular-season championships in a five-year period while also leading the 2012-13 and 2014-15 squads to Horizon League tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A product of Joliet West High School and a native of Joliet, Ill., Powell capped a prolific collegiate playing career at Illinois with a national title game appearance in 2005 before going on to a successful professional playing career. In the second season of the Powell Era in 2024-2025, Valpo over doubled its overall win total from the previous season and doubled its conference win output before earning a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinal berth. The Beacons finished with 15 wins, the team’s highest total since 2019-20.

Series Notes: Valpo is 3-7 all-time against Murray State in a series that began in 1999-2000. The Beacons will look to capture their first Missouri Valley Conference victory over the Racers as Murray State has won all six matchups since joining the MVC prior to the 2022-2023 campaign.

Scouting the Racers

Picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll (behind Illinois State and UNI).

Finished the nonconference docket with an 8-3 mark before opening league play at home against Drake on Thursday.

Led in scoring by Javon Jackson at 16.5 points per game.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Ryan Miller, who previously served as the associate head coach at Creighton.

Started league play with an 81-72 victory over Drake on Thursday.

Valpo in Conference Openers

Valpo is 1-7 in league openers since joining the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Beacons have dropped the last six MVC openers after a half-court buzzer-beater by Markus Golder helped Valpo start the 2018-19 conference campaign with a 58-56 win over Illinois State.

This will continue a trend of Valpo facing a tough test in its first Valley game, as the Beacons opened MVC play against Drake in three of the last four seasons.

This will mark Valpo’s latest league opener since starting Valley play on Jan. 9, 2021 vs. Missouri State.

Over the last four years, the MVC used a scheduling model where each team played one or two games the week after Thanksgiving, but this year Valpo’s schedule featured continuous nonconference play followed by continuous conference activity.

With the league down to 11 teams, it’s a full double round robin this year, with every squad playing every other team twice each to comprise a 20-game slate.

MARIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS

NO. 5 MARIAN MOVES TO 12-0, BLOWING PAST NO. 17 ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE 71-46

Glendale, Ariz. – After a forgettable first quarter in which Marian mustered five points in a neutral matchup with No. 17 Rocky Mountain College, the Knights turned up their scoring in the final three quarters as they ran away with a 71-46 victory. The win is Marian’s third over a team featured in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll by a margin of 25 points or more, as they improve to 12-0 on the season.

The first quarter proved as one to forget for the Knights, as things never clicked offensively after Kenna Kirby scored a putback basket for the game’s first points. The early duece would be one of just two made Marian field goals in the quarter, as shooting woes plagued the traveling Knights, who ended up shooting 2-21 from the field in the period. While the offense started slow, the defense played tenaciously, forcing seven turnovers and holding the Battlin’ Bears to a 3-12 shooting effort.

After the low-scoring 7-5 quarter that saw Rocky Mountain lead after one, Marian ramped it up in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field with three made three-point field goals, pouring in 22 points in total in the quarter. Rocky Mountain too found a rhythm scoring 14 points, but the defense of the Knights continued to be too tough, as they forced another six turnovers in the quarter.

The Battlin’ Bears offense came early as they pushed their two-point lead to eight within the first 3:20, but a surge from Abbey and Kiley McNally helped chip the lead to two points over the next three minutes. Back-to-back three-point makes from Madisyn Bailey saw the Knights push in front 23-19, allowing them to maintain the lead entering the break. Abbey McNally scored the final four points of the quarter, with Marian leading 27-21.

Rocky Mountain made their adjustments at halftime and used the first three minutes to tie the game at 31-31, but a three-point dagger from Taylor Double halted their momentum and allowed Marian to keep the upper hand. Eva Fisher followed with a three-ball of her own, as the Knights found a groove and raced to a 12-0 run, taking a 43-31 edge. Despite seeing the run stop, Marian continued to be aggressive on the offensive end, with Bailey and Double pacing the attack. Olivia Faust beat the third quarter buzzer with a jumper in the paint, capping an electric quarter with Marian on top 52-36.

In the final stanza, Marian continued to flex their attack, never relenting while keeping their lead above 14 points. Kiley McNally and Zoe Wheeler both played a strong role in the fourth quarter finishing run, as a three from Wheeler with 4:04 to play pushed the advantage to 20. A pair of baskets from Bailey in the waning minutes would seal Marian’s 20-point lead over Rocky Mountain, as the Knights finished strong with their 71-46 victory.

Marian recovered after its slow start, finishing the game shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, knocking down six three pointers in the win. Madisyn Bailey paced the scoring with a game-high 18 points and seven assists, while Abbey McNally had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. Kiley McNally picked up 11 points and five steals off the bench, while Zoe Wheeler scored seven to go with her two steals and three boards.

Marian’s win allows them to move to the 10th NAIA team to reach 12 victories this season, while they are one of eight remaining undefeated teams in the nation.

The visitors continued to make their final push with a pair of baskets, but Marian was able to benefit from a pair of fouls with Franks firing off a trio of free throws. Each team traded free throws in the final minute, with Rutland III and Moles tallying the baskets. Saint Mary of the Woods closed out the game with a three-pointer, bringing the score 70-65 in favor of Marian.

Aidan Franks led the way with 17 points and four assists, while Ron Rutland III, Josiah Gustin, and Aaron Humphrey Jr. all recorded 10 points. Gustin led the way in rebounds with eight, while both Humphrey Jr. and Luke Carroll recorded seven each.
