NFL NEWS
SEVEN FROM SUNDAY – WEEK 17
A look at seven statistical highlights from games played during the 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET windows on Sunday, December 28, the 17th week of the 2025 season.
The Denver Broncos (13-3) defeated Kansas City, 20-13, and clinched the AFC West for the first time since 2015.
Denver head coach Sean Payton recorded his 13th win of the season and joins Bill Belichick (seven seasons) as the only coaches in NFL history to win at least 13 games in at least five seasons.
The Houston Texans (11-5) defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-16, to clinch a playoff berth for the third consecutive season. The Texans are the fifth team since 1990 to begin 0-3 and qualify for the postseason.
Additionally in Week 17, the Chicago Bears (11-5), clinched the NFC North for the first time since 2018 while the Green Bay Packers (9-6-1) clinched a postseason berth for the third straight year.
The New England Patriots (13-3) defeated the New York Jets, 42-10, and coupled with the Bills’ Week 17 loss, clinched the AFC East for the first time since 2019.
The Bears and Patriots finished last in their divisions in 2024 before winning division titles this season. In 20 of the past 23 seasons (2003-25), at least one team finished in first place in its division the season after finishing in last or tied for last place.
New England quarterback Drake Maye completed 19 of 21 pass attempts (90.5 percent) for 256 yards and five touchdowns for a 157.0 rating in the Patriots’ 42-10 victory over the New York Jets.
Maye, who is 23 years old, became the third player under the age of 24 all-time with at least two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher in 10 games in a single season, joining Patrick Mahomes (13 games in 2018 with Kansas City) and Matthew Stafford (10 in 2011 with Detroit).
Maye, who has 4,203 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in 2025, is the sixth quarterback all-time under the age of 24 with at least 4,000 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in a season, joining Blake Bortles (2015 with Jacksonville), Justin Herbert (2020 and 2021 with the Los Angeles Chargers), Patrick Mahomes (2018 with Kansas City), Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (1984 with Miami) and Matthew Stafford (2009 with Detroit).
Maye has 12 games with a passer rating of 100-or-higher, surpassing Dak Prescott (11 games in 2016 with Dallas) for the second-most such games by a player under the age of 24 in a single season all-time, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (13 in 2018 with Kansas City).
Maye, who has six games this season with a passer rating of 135-or-higher, is the third quarterback in NFL history with six such games in a single season, joining Lamar Jackson (2024 with Baltimore) and Tony Romo (2014 with Dallas).
Maye, who had 222 passing yards and a 91.3 completion percentage in Week 7, became the first player in NFL history to record two games with at least 200 passing yards and a completion percentage of 90-or-higher (minimum five attempts) in a season.
Maye joined Lynn Dickey (Dec. 13, 1981, with Green Bay) and Frank Ryan (Dec. 12, 1964, with Cleveland) as the only players with five touchdown passes and a completion percentage of 90-or-higher in a single game.
Arizona tight end Trey McBride had 10 receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown in Week 17.
McBride has a career-high and franchise-record 119 receptions this season and surpassed Zach Ertz (116 receptions in 2018 with Philadelphia) for the most receptions by a tight end in a season in NFL history.
McBride, who had 111 receptions last season and leads the league with 119 receptions this season, became the first tight end all-time with at least 110 receptions in multiple career seasons.
McBride has 36 career games with at least five receptions since entering the NFL in 2022, surpassing Jimmy Graham (35 games) for the most such games by a tight end in their first four seasons in NFL history.
Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold has led the Seahawks to 13 wins this season, the team’s most since 2013, after defeating the Panthers 27-10. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had nine receptions for 72 yards in Week 17 and leads the league with 1,709 receiving yards this season.
Darnold, who had 14 wins with Minnesota in 2024, became the fifth quarterback all-time to record at least 13 wins in consecutive seasons and the first to do so with different teams, joining Aaron Rodgers (three consecutive seasons from 2019-21 with Green Bay), Tom Brady (two in 2010-11 and 2003-04 with New England) as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (two in 1996-97 with Green Bay) and Peyton Manning (two in 2012-13 with Denver).
Smith-Njigba, who is 23 years old, became the third player in NFL history under age 24 with at least 1,700 receiving yards in a single season, joining Justin Jefferson (1,809 receiving yards in 2022 with Minnesota) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce (1,781 in 1995 with the St. Louis Rams).
Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow passed for 305 yards and two touchdowns, both to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, in the Bengals’ 37-14 victory over Arizona.
Burrow is the third player all-time with at least 25 games of 300 passing yards and multiple touchdown passes in his first six career seasons, joining Patrick Mahomes (34 games) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino (27).
Chase has 13 career games with multiple touchdown receptions, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (13 games), Dez Bryant (13), Rob Gronkowski (13) and Andre Rison (13) for the second-most games with multiple touchdown receptions by a player in his first five seasons in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (17 games) has more.
Chase, who has seven touchdown receptions this season, joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss as the only players with at least seven touchdown receptions in each of his first five seasons in NFL history.
Chase has 53 touchdown receptions since entering the NFL in 2021 and surpassed Andre Rison (52 touchdown receptions) for the fifth-most touchdown receptions by a wide receiver in his first five seasons in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (66 touchdown receptions), Randy Moss (60) and Lance Alworth (54) as well as Dez Bryant (56) have more.
Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence passed for 263 yards and had two rushing touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 23-17 victory over Indianapolis.
Lawrence, who has 26 touchdown passes and nine rushing touchdowns in 2025, joins Josh Allen (2023-25), Kyler Murray (2020) and Cam Newton (2015) as the only players in NFL history with at least 25 touchdown passes and nine rushing touchdowns in a season.
Lawrence has three games this season with multiple rushing touchdowns and joins Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts and Cam Newton as the only quarterbacks since 2000 to record at least three games with two-or-more rushing touchdowns in a single season.
New Orleans quarterback Tyler Shough completed 22 of 31 passes (81.5 percent) for 333 yards and two touchdowns for a 142.7 rating in the Saints’ 34-26 victory over Tennessee.
Shough is the second rookie ever with a completion percentage of 80-or-higher, at least 300 passing yards and a passer rating of 145-or-higher in a single game, joining Bo Nix (Nov. 17, 2024, and Jan. 5, 2025, with Denver).
Per Next Gen Stats, Shough excelled on downfield throws (at least 10 air yards), completing eight of 12 attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns, the most downfield passing yards of his career.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen passed for 262 yards and had two rushing touchdowns in Week 17.
Allen, who is 29 years and 221 days old and has 301 combined passing, rushing and receiving touchdowns in 127 career games, is the youngest in age and fastest in games played to reach 300 career combined passing, rushing and receiving touchdowns, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (31 years and 212 days old) and Aaron Rodgers (134 games).
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart passed for 207 yards and rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants’ 34-10 victory over Las Vegas.
Dart has nine rushing touchdowns this season, surpassing Josh Allen (eight rushing touchdowns) for the second-most rushing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era, trailing only Cam Newton (14 rushing touchdowns).
Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown in Week 17.
Taylor, who had 18 rushing touchdowns in 2021 and has 18 rushing touchdowns this season, became the fourth player in NFL history with at least 18 rushing touchdowns in multiple career seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (three seasons) and LaDainian Tomlinson (two) as well as Priest Holmes (two).
Taylor, who has 9,028 scrimmage yards and 76 touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2020, became the sixth player in NFL history with at least 9,000 scrimmage yards and 75 scrimmage touchdowns in his first six seasons, joining Shaun Alexander and Adrian Peterson as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson.
Taylor, who has 1,924 scrimmage yards and 20 touchdowns this season, joins Pro Football Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk, Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson, as well as Shaun Alexander and Priest Holmes as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,500 scrimmage yards and 20 touchdowns in multiple seasons.
Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans had 31 receiving yards and a touchdown reception in Week 17.
Evans, who has 864 receptions for 13,018 yards and 108 touchdowns in his career, is one of nine players in NFL history with at least 850 receptions, 13,000 receiving yards and 100 touchdown receptions in their career, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Tony Gonzalez, Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens as well as Larry Fitzgerald.
NFL ROUNDUP: EAGLES HOLD OFF BILLS’ SURGE TO GIVE PATS AFC EAST CROWN
Jake Elliott kicked two field goals and the Philadelphia Eagles held off a frantic Buffalo rally to squeak out a 13-12 win over the Bills on Sunday at Orchard Park, N.Y.
Buffalo scored 12 straight fourth-quarter points, but after Jalen Carter blocked the extra point on its first touchdown, Josh Allen’s two-point conversion throw to Khalil Shakir was off the mark with five seconds remaining. The Eagles (11-5) recovered the ensuing onside kick in a contest played in heavy rain to snap the Bills’ (11-5) streak of five straight AFC East titles.
Jalen Hurts misfired on all seven of his second-half pass attempts while finishing 13 of 27 for 110 yards and a touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert. Jihaad Campbell had a key first-quarter fumble recovery and Zack Baun had a critical fourth-and-goal stop for Philadelphia, which gained just 190 yards of offense.
Allen completed 23 of 35 passes for 262 yards and also rushed for both Buffalo touchdowns — including one on fourth-and-goal in the closing seconds — despite consistently hobbling because of his right foot injury.
Patriots 42, Jets 10
Drake Maye completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and five touchdowns to lead New England past New York in East Rutherford, N.J. Coupled with Buffalo’s 13-12 loss to Philadelphia later in the day, the Patriots clinched the AFC East crown for the first time since 2019.
Maye completed his first 11 attempts and tossed TD passes to tight end Austin Hooper (2 yards), running back Rhamondre Stevenson (22 yards), wide receiver Stefon Diggs (3 yards), tight end Hunter Henry (13 yards) and wide receiver Efton Chism (10 yards). It was Chism’s first NFL touchdown.
Maye, who was pulled in the third quarter after his fifth TD pass, became the fourth Patriots quarterback to pass for at least five touchdowns in a game, joining Tom Brady, Steve Grogan and Babe Parilli. Stevenson also scored on a 1-yard run to help the Patriots (13-3) improve their road record to 8-0. Breece Hall scored the only touchdown for the Jets (3-13) on a 59-yard run.
Browns 13, Steelers 6
Host Cleveland made a defensive stand at its own 7-yard line and snapped a four-game losing streak to keep Pittsburgh from claiming the AFC North title.
The Steelers (9-7) went four-and-out to give the ball back to Cleveland at the two-minute warning. Andre Szmyt’s 33-yard field goal soon made it 13-6 Browns. Aaron Rodgers (21 of 39 for 168 yards) then drove Pittsburgh to the seven, but three straight incompletions handed the Browns (4-12) their first win in the division in five tries.
Shedeur Sanders went 17 for 23 for 186 yards, one TD and two interceptions but put the only TD on the board in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Steelers will play the Baltimore Ravens next week with the winner claiming the AFC North title.
Saints 34, Titans 26
Rookie Tyler Shough passed for a season-high 333 yards and two touchdowns and New Orleans won its fourth consecutive game, defeating Tennessee in Nashville, Tenn.
Shough completed 22 of 27 passes and one of his touchdowns went to Chris Olave, who finished with eight catches for 119 yards. Juwan Johnson added four catches for a career-high 95 yards as the Saints (6-10) improved to 5-3 with Shough as a starter.
Cam Ward had his fourth consecutive two-touchdown game, passing for 251 yards for the Titans (3-13). Titans Pro Bowl receiver/return specialist Chimere Dike set an NFL rookie record for all-purpose yards, surpassing the 2,317 yards that Tim Brown had with the Raiders in 1988.
Jaguars 23, Colts 17
Trevor Lawrence rushed for two touchdowns and threw for 263 yards to help visiting Jacksonville come away with a win over Indianapolis.
An interception by Jarrian Jones midway through the fourth quarter — his second in as many weeks — set up Cam Little for what became a game-winning 42-yard field goal with 6:58 left to help Jacksonville (12-4) win its seventh straight game and move to the brink of clinching the AFC South. They can do so in Week 18 with a win over Tennessee or a Houston loss to Indianapolis.
The Colts (8-8) sustained their sixth straight loss after they were eliminated from playoff contention with Houston’s win Saturday. Philip Rivers completed 17 of 30 passes for 147 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jonathan Taylor added 70 yards and a score on 21 carries.
Dolphins 20, Buccaneers 17
Miami rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers threw the first two touchdown passes of his career and the defense forced three turnovers to lead the team to a 20-17 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon at Miami Gardens, Fla.
Ewers completed 14 of 22 passes for 172 yards and no interceptions and finished with a 118.0 passer rating in his second career start after replacing Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins’ (7-9) defense forced a pair of fourth-quarter turnovers to narrowly protect a 10-point fourth-quarter lead.
Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 33 of 44 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns, but threw a pair of costly interceptions and lost a fumble. Tampa Bay (7-9) lost its fourth game in a row but was not eliminated since Seattle beat Carolina on Sunday. The Buccaneers will have one final chance to make the playoffs if they can beat Carolina at home next week and thereby clinch the NFC South.
Bengals 37, Cardinals 14
Ja’Marr Chase made NFL history and broke a seven-game touchdown drought to lead host Cincinnati to a second straight blowout win, beating Arizona.
Chase finished with seven catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns, giving him seven touchdowns for the season. In the process, Chase became the first receiver in NFL history with at least 80 catches, 1,000 yards and seven touchdown receptions in each of his first five seasons. Chase Brown ran for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Joe Burrow completed 24 of 31 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns for the Bengals (6-10).
Jacoby Brissett completed 21 of 37 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals (3-13), who dropped their eighth straight game. Arizona tight end Trey McBride finished with 10 catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. He now has 119 catches, the most by a tight end in a single season in NFL history and became the first tight end in NFL history with at least 110 catches in multiple seasons.
Seahawks 27, Panthers 10
Zach Charbonnet rushed for a season-high 110 yards and two touchdowns and the Seattle defense was dominant against Carolina in Charlotte, N.C.
The NFC West-leading Seahawks (13-3), who limited the Panthers to 139 yards of total offense, won their sixth consecutive game and improved to 7-1 on the road. Sam Darnold completed 18 of 27 passes for 147 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had nine catches for 72 yards.
Bryce Young completed 14 of 24 passes for only 54 yards with one interception for Carolina (8-8), which leads the NFC South but will need to win at Tampa Bay in order to end its seven-year playoff drought. Rico Dowdle rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries.
Giants 34, Raiders 10
Jaxson Dart passed for 207 yards and ran for two touchdowns as New York earned a victory over host Las Vegas in a meeting of teams with the two worst records in the NFL.
Devin Singletary ran for a first-quarter touchdown and Dart added rushing TDs in the second and fourth quarters as the Giants (3-13) won the first game between teams with dueling nine-game losing streaks. Deonte Banks had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Geno Smith threw for 176 yards and a touchdown for the Raiders (2-14) before he departed with an ankle injury early in the fourth quarter. Smith completed 20 of 28 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions as Las Vegas gained the inside track for the No. 1 draft pick in 2026.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS
NORTH TEXAS STAR RB CALEB HAWKINS HEADED TO TRANSFER PORTAL
North Texas star running back Caleb Hawkins, the national leader with 29 touchdowns, announced Sunday that he will enter the transfer portal.
The freshman sensation rushed for 1,434 yards and 25 touchdowns and caught 32 passes for 370 yards and four scores for the Mean Green (12-2).
Hawkins’ 29 total touchdowns are a record for a freshman. Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon set the old mark of 28 in 2012.
“Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of Mean Green football,” Hawkins said on social media. “I’m grateful to the coaching staff for believing in me and giving me the chance to grow as both an athlete and a person. …
“After much thought, I have decided to officially enter the NCAA transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining. I will always cherish my time at North Texas.
Hawkins capped his campaign with 198 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries and also had a scoring reception in Saturday’s 49-47 victory over San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl.
The resident of Shawnee, Okla., could look to return home. Eric Morris was hired away from North Texas to be the new head coach at Oklahoma State. Neal Brown will be the new coach of the Mean Green.
Another option might be Texas, which has so far lost four running backs to the transfer portal.
North Texas also is awaiting word from star quarterback Drew Mestemaker, whose 4,379 passing yards are second most in FBS history for a freshman, trailing Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud (4,435 in 2021).
He previously said he will announce a decision following the bowl game.
AUBURN FLIPS 4-STAR WR, FORMER MICHIGAN SIGNEE BRADY MARCHESE
Auburn landed a commitment from 2026 four-star receiver Brady Marchese on Sunday, two days after he backed off his signing with Michigan.
Marchese became the third Michigan signee to request his release from his letter of intent on Friday, joining three-star interior offensive lineman Bear McWhorter, who also landed at Auburn, and four-star tight end Matt Ludwig, who signed with Texas Tech.
A 6-foot-1, 183-pound wideout out of Cartersville, Ga., Marchese previously flipped his pledge from Georgia to Michigan during the early signing period on Dec. 4. He ranks as the No. 134 overall prospect and No. 20 receiver in the 2026 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Michigan’s class falls to 11th in the 247Sports composite class rankings with Marchese’s departure while Auburn’s class ranking rises to 30th with his addition.
MICHIGAN MISSION BEGINS FOR KYLE WHITTINGHAM, WOLVERINES IN FLORIDA
He will not coach Michigan in the Citrus Bowl this week, but new coach Kyle Whittingham joined the Wolverines in Florida to begin his first and most pressing mission.
Specifically, he’s fighting to win over players before they opt to enter the transfer portal following the bowl game against Texas on Wednesday.
“College football is all about the players. If you’ve got good players, you’ve got a chance,” Whittingham said Sunday.
Whittingham was introduced in Orlando where interim coach Biff Poggi is in charge of the bowl preparation and game day against the Wolverines.
Whittingham said he met with quarterback Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025 who is wrapping up his freshman season and undecided about staying in Ann Arbor to play for a new coaching staff. Whittingham said his message to the 18-year-old Underwood was stressing his ideal fit in the incoming offensive system.
“The offense we’re bringing here, I think, is going to suit him to a tee,” Whittingham said. “And I think he’s going to really, really excel and have a great experience here.”
Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to his home state of Michigan during his senior season at Belleville High
“A quarterback’s got to have an ‘it’ factor, and he’s got it,” Whittingham said.
Whittingham, 66, was hired last week to take over at Michigan and signed a five-year contract 16 days after Sherrone Moore was fired with cause after two years as head coach. He was 177-88 as head coach at Utah and said he couldn’t turn down the chance to re-establish Michigan.
“I could count on one hand the number of jobs I would have said ‘Yes’ to and Michigan was one of them,” Whittingham said. “I believe in family. We’ve got an adage as coaches ‘we love the players and players love each other’ … if you can get that done, you’re halfway home.
“There is nobody above the team, and you got to have everybody buy in — and everybody, including myself, lead this team.”

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEWS
NO. 7 GONZAGA BEATS PEPPERDINE FOR 50TH STRAIGHT TIME
Tyon Grant-Foster registered 18 points and four blocked shots and No. 7 Gonzaga defeated host Pepperdine for the 50th consecutive time with a 96-56 triumph on Sunday night at Malibu, Calif.
Braeden Smith had 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds as the Bulldogs (13-1) cruised in the West Coast Conference opener for both squads. Gonzaga has won six straight games.
Davis Fogle also scored 15 points, Graham Ike had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Braden Huff had 10 points for the Zags, who won by 40 or more for the fourth time this season.
The Bulldogs’ last loss in the series came on Jan. 18, 2002, when the Waves recorded an 88-79 home win. Gonzaga coach Mark Few is 54-2 against Pepperdine.
The Bulldogs also won their 30th consecutive WCC opener, the last 27 under Few.
Yonatan Levy recorded 15 points and three steals and Javon Cooley added 13 points for Pepperdine (5-9).
Gonzaga shot 53.7% from the field, including 10 of 22 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs held a 44-31 rebounding edge and also claimed advantages of 50-18 in points in the paint and 19-0 in fast-break points.
Gonzaga has recorded eight victories by more than 25 points this season.
The Waves made just 33.9% of their attempts and were 5 of 19 from behind the arc.
Pepperdine was down 22-16 after a 3-pointer by Cooley midway through the first half.
Gonzaga then erupted with 18 consecutive points. Ike capped it with a layup to make it 40-16 with 5:00 left in the half.
The Bulldogs led 44-26 at halftime behind 54.5% shooting. The Waves made just 27.6% (8 of 29) of their first-half attempts.
Smith started the second half strong by scoring all the Gonzaga points during an 8-2 run that increased the lead to 24.
Adam Miller drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead to 30 for the first time with 14:33 left.
Grant-Foster’s alley-oop dunk made it 84-47 with 5:47 remaining and the Zags cruised to the finish.
NO. 15 TEXAS TECH RIDES HUGE FIRST HALF TO THROTTLE WINTHROP
No. 15 Texas Tech got back to work Sunday against Winthrop for the first time since a historic comeback victory and was in full control from the start on the way to an 87-57 triumph in Lubbock, Texas.
Ignited by Christian Anderson, the Red Raiders (10-3) stormed in front 59-21 by halftime with an almost flawless opening 20 minutes and aided by a miserable shooting performance by the Eagles (8-7).
Winthrop showed some grit in the second half to prevent the blowout from worsening, outscoring the Red Raiders 36-28. However, the first-half onslaught left no doubt.
On the way to a game-high 29 points, Anderson racked up 25 in the first half, a nice bookend to the 23 he scored in the second half to fuel the Red Raiders’ 82-81 comeback victory against No. 3 Duke on Dec. 21 at Madison Square Garden. He scored Texas Tech’s final 16 points of the half and was 7-for-10 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
As a team, Texas Tech shot a sizzling 65.6% (21 of 32) from the field before halftime and connected on 9-of-15 from beyond the arc in its highest scoring half this season. Jaylen Petty added 20 points for the Red Raiders, Donovan Atwell matched Anderson with four 3-pointers and scored 14 and JT Toppin scored 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds. That quartet accounted for 24 of Texas Tech’s 27 made field goals and all 10 of its treys (in 25 attempts).
Logan Duncomb and Kareem Rozier paced the Eagles with 11 points each.
Eight days after erasing a 17-point deficit to stun Duke, the Red Raiders showed no signs of letting down, even coming off the holiday break.
Texas Tech raced to a 27-4 advantage in the opening 9:19, hitting 11-of-16 field goals along the way with nine assists. Petty and Atwell each drained a pair of 3s to ignite the quick start and Anderson had three of his five assists.
Once the lead swelled to 45-14, Anderson took over and was a one-man wrecking crew over the last 4:02 with 16 points in a row, punctuated by three 3-pointers.
As hot as the Red Raiders were from the outset, Winthrop was just as cold. The Eagles came into the day shooting 37.1% from 3-point territory. On Sunday, the Eagles missed their first 11 tries from deep and were 1-for-14 at halftime. They had more turnovers (8) than made shots (6) in the opening 20 minutes.
Winthrop heated up in the second half and bolted to an 18-7 run to begin the second half, getting as close as 27 points. The Eagles, whose first six losses came by single digits before Sunday, ended the day shooting 31.7% (19 of 60) and were 4-for-25 from 3-point land.

Caroline Dotsey and Addison Baxter each scored 10 points for Butler (7-7, 1-3), which committed 29 turnovers to negate much of its 32-30 rebounding advantage.
No. 2 Texas 120, Southeastern Louisiana 38
Kyla Oldacre scored 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting off the bench and Madison Booker racked up 20 points as the Longhorns reached the 100-point mark for the sixth time while cruising in Austin, Texas.

ZaKiyah Johnson added 17 points, Bella Hines had 13 points and Mikaylah Williams notched 11 points for LSU (14-0), which led 53-14 at halftime. The Tigers shot 2-for-13 on 3s.
Alabama State (3-8) was charged with 36 turnovers. Alanah Pooler had a team-high eight points off the bench.
No. 11 Kentucky 80, Hofstra 42

NHL ROUNDUP: JACKETS SCORE 3 GOALS IN THIRD TO DOUBLE-UP ISLANDERS
Ivan Provorov and Kirill Marchenko scored the tying and game-winning goals in a span of 74 seconds late in the third period as the host Columbus Blue Jackets stunned the New York Islanders 4-2 on Sunday in a heated Metropolitan Division clash.
Cole Sillinger clinched the contest with an empty-netter with 1:06 remaining and Jet Greaves made 24 saves to give the Blue Jackets their first two-game winning streak since Dec. 1-4.
The Islanders played the final 38-plus minutes without Mathew Barzal after he received a game misconduct for slashing Mason Marchment in retaliation for a pair of penalties Marchment drew against rookie Matthew Schaefer.
Marchenko scored the first of his two goals before Max Shabanov tied the game late in the first and Bo Horvat scored the go-ahead goal in the second for New York. David Rittich, who made his fourth straight start in place of the injured Ilya Sorokin, recorded 31 saves as the Islanders’ two-game winning streak ended.
Lightning 5, Canadiens 4 (SO)
Gage Goncalves and Brayden Point tallied in the shootout as Tampa Bay won its fourth straight contest by edging visiting Montreal.
After the Lightning squandered a 4-1 lead in the third period, the pair beat Florida-born goaltender Jacob Fowler (18 saves) as the club won the shootout 2-0 on the second night of a back-to-back set. Tampa Bay goalie Jonas Johansson (32 saves) stopped Ivan Demidov and Cole Caufield for the win.
The Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov scored two goals, and Nick Paul and Pontus Holmberg tallied. Montreal’s Juraj Slafkovsky had two goals and an assist, and Demidov and Noah Dobson each scored and added a helper.

Nick Foligno, Wyatt Kaiser and Tyler Bertuzzi put the Blackhawks on the board, but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent Chicago from falling to 1-7 in its past eight games. Spencer Knight managed to stop only five of nine shots, while Arvid Soderblom saved 12 of 15 attempts.
Red Wings 3, Maple Leafs 2 (OT)
Simon Edvinsson scored on a backhander with 3:14 remaining in overtime as host Detroit edged Toronto and maintained a two-point lead in the Atlantic Division.

TREVOR LAWRENCE RUNS FOR 2 SCORES AS JAGUARS CLOSE IN ON AFC SOUTH TITLE WITH 23-17 WIN OVER COLTS
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Trevor Lawrence took the Jacksonville Jaguars back to the playoffs with his nearly flawless work through the air.
On Sunday, he used his legs to put the Jags on the cusp of a division title.
Lawrence ran for two scores, Cam Little made a tiebreaking, 42-yard field goal with 6:58 to play, and the Jags beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-17 to move within one victory of their first AFC South crown since 2022.
“We are a very confident group. We feel like, ‘Why not us?’ We feel like it should be us,” Lawrence said. “We’ve got to go and finish the job next week. It’s a huge game — a division game to win the AFC South. We know what we have to do, and we know what we have ahead of us.”
Their celebration was put on hold for another week after two-time defending division champion Houston beat the Los Angeles Chargers 20-16 on Saturday. That result also eliminated the Colts (8-8) from the postseason.
Still, it didn’t diminish what the Jags (12-4) did Sunday.
Jacksonville won its seventh straight to remain one game ahead of the Texans. The Jags are also in the mix for the AFC’s top seed under Liam Coen, who became the first coach to win 12 games after taking over a team that won four games the previous season.
Lawrence had a workmanlike performance, completing 23 of 37 passes for 263 yards — ending his streak of four straight games with 275 yards, two TDs and a passer rating over 100. He also threw his first interception in five weeks.
The numbers weren’t important to Lawrence.
“We’ve got the confidence that when we play well, we can beat anybody,” he said. “Who cares who thinks who is the best team? We’ll actually have the chance to prove it. We’ll have our shot.”
Jackonville kept 44-year-old Colts quarterback Philip Rivers winless in three games since he returned to the league following a five-year retirement.
Indy (8-8) has lost six straight and seven of eight to become the sixth team since 1970 — and the first since the 1995 Oakland Raiders — to miss the postseason after starting 7-1.
“We were talking in there and I think the start, the hot start, is what probably makes this whole thing hurt even more,” Rivers said. “If it had been one of those kinds of back-and-forth years the whole year — you look up and you find a way to win eight, nine games and you go, ‘Shoot, just kind of a grinding kind of year.’ But the fact they were at eight (wins) so soon and it’s just been a tough last six-game stretch or so.”
Rivers went 17 of 30 for 147 yards with one TD and one interception. His pick set up Jacksonville’s go-ahead score.
The fourth-oldest quarterback to start an NFL game relied on his wisdom to put Jacksonville in an early 10-0 hole. A long opening kickoff return by Ashton Dulin set up a field goal, and the Colts converted a Jags turnover into a 3-yard TD run from Jonathan Taylor.
Lawrence answered with a 4-yard TD run and again in the third quarter with a nifty 6-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter to make it 14-10.
Dulin’s second long return, a 56-yarder, set up Rivers’ 5-yard TD pass to Mo Alie-Cox that put Indy up 17-14 with 5:58 left in the third.
Then Little tied the score with a 34-yard field goal, broke the tie with his 42-yarder and extended the margin with a late 53-yarder before the Jags sealed it by intercepting Riley Leonard’s final heave into the end zone.
More celebrations could be coming soon for the Jags.
“We haven’t addressed making the playoffs as a team,” Coen said. “We haven’t talked about goals, about the division, the conference, the Super Bowl, none of that. We’re focused on being 1-0 each week and keeping the mindset as singular as we can.”
Stat pack
Jaguars: Etienne rushed 17 times for 76 yards to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the third time in his four seasons. … Parker Washington caught eight passes for 115 yards.
Colts: Taylor tied his single-season franchise records for TD runs (18) and total TDs (19), matching his totals from 2021. … The Colts lost their final three home games after winning their first six, including a game in Berlin.
Injury report
Indy receiver Michael Pittman Jr. left briefly in the first quarter with a calf injury, and two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner did not return after aggravating the calf injury that kept him out the previous three weeks.
Up next
Jaguars: Can win the division title with a victory over visiting Tennessee next weekend.
Colts: At Houston next weekend to conclude their fifth straight season without a playoff berth.

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL
IRISH GOES WEST TO BEGIN ACC PLAY
STANFORD, Calif. – The Notre Dame men’s basketball team will begin ACC play with its first California road swing since Cal and Stanford joined the ACC last year. It’s prime scheduling for the Irish, knocking out the Cali road trip right off the bat during the holiday break and getting a week off before their third conference game.
The Fighting Irish know the importance of grabbing two wins this week after suffering a setback loss to close the non-con portion of their season. Notre Dame will first look to bounce back against Stanford on Dec. 30 inside Maples Pavilion at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Then ND will make the short drive to Berkeley to challenge Cal on Jan. 2.
Last season, the Irish ended the regular season with both these teams and emerged victorious in both in dramatic fashion. First, a 56-54 last-second win against the Cardinal in which Cole Certa hit the game-winner. Then a 112-110 4OT thriller against Cal in which Markus Burton dropped 41 points.
Coach Shrewsberry is 1-1 in ACC openers, while the program all-time record is 5-7.
If you are an Irish fan in the Palo Alto or Berkeley area, now is the time. This trip will mark the first time ND has visited Cal and the second time at Stanford, with the previous visit being on January 12, 1993. In that game, Monty Williams dropped 23 points in the 67-61 win.
WHO’S HOT?
With Markus Burton on the mend, the ball has been put in the hands of freshman Jalen Haralson, and he has delivered. The Indiana native has dropped 20 or more points in three of the last four games. He’s 26-57 from the field in that span, averaging 17.8 ppg – a team best.
One of those big time performances was the TCU overtime victory and it was Jalen himself who hit the buzzer beater in regulation. Down two with three seconds remaining, Haralson hit a step-back fadeaway jumper to tie it at 76-all. Haralson finished the night with 20 points & a career high 9 assists. Other ND greats over the last three decades to match Jalen’s stat line of 20 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 1 block: Jerian Grant in 2015 / Chris Thomas 3x (twice in 2002 and once in 2005).
ACC PLAY RESET
Notre Dame begins ACC play with a 9-4 record so let’s talk about how we got here:
The Irish incurred three losses earlier in the season, but two were to ranked powers Kansas and Houston in Vegas, and the third was a what-if scenario in Columbus – a one-point loss at Ohio State. Those battles tested the Irish, as they learned from them and got better. After Vegas, they rattled off four straight wins, which included an SEC Challenge victory over Mizzou and a Quad 1 win at TCU. At that point in time, the Irish jumped from 86 in the NET to 69. They received votes in the A.P. poll for the first time in the Coach Shrews Era. They appeared at No. 25 in Andy Katz’s Power37 and No. 41 in Jon Rothstein’s 45.
As Coach Shrewsberry stated, it was a culmination of all their games played, specifically the three losses this year.
In fact, not only did they close, but they battled back. The Irish were down 12 to Missouri (7 at the half) and 11 to TCU (9 at the half). The last time Notre Dame came back to win after being down 9+ at halftime was a 13-point deficit to Virginia Tech in the ACC Tourney on March 7, 2018.
It was done by playing team basketball – making the extra pass and hitting clutch shots. Notre Dame produced 16 assists on 25 made field goals against Mizzou and then recorded 27 assists on 33 made field goals at TCU. The latter marked the most assists in a game since at Syracuse on Jan. 4, 2020.
The Irish were then looking to make it five in a row when Purdue Fort Wayne came to town, but it was a cold shooting day for the home team. The three-point loss dropped ND 21 spots in the NET to 81. They check in now at 66 in KenPom.
A CAREER NIGHT FOR SHREWSBERRY AND MOHAMMED
In that four-game win streak was an 82-58 win over Evansville, which featured career high performances from both Braeden Shrewsberry and Sir Mohammed.
Shrewsberry scored a career-high 26 points on 9-12 shooting from the floor (75%) and finished with a career-high 8 three pointers, shooting 80% from three on 8-10 shooting.
Then there was Mohammed who dropped a career-high 21 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor. Mohammed also chipped in two rebounds and three assists for the Irish.
SHREWSBERRY DIALED IN
That last note now leads us to Who’s Hot 2.0, which is Braeden Shrewsberry. He’s also filling the scoring hole that is Burton and has produced five straight games in double figures. He’s averaging 15.8 ppg in that span on 51.0% shooting.
He’s been dialed in from beyond the arc, where he’s 21-41 (.512) over the last five games. That was the fifth best three point field goal percentage in the month of December for anyone with at least 20 made threes.
More on Braeden over his last five games: His 71.6 effective FG% and 72.5 true shooting % both rank in the 99th percentile according to CBB Analytics.
Overall, Braeden is 48.8 percent from three, which ranks second in the ACC & 14th in the nation. He’s converting 3.3 made threes per game, which ranks second in the league. Lastly, his 42 total threes rank 17th nationally.
MORE THAN JUST REBOUNDING
Carson Towt is 19-26 (.731) from the floor over the past four games. He’s averaging a double-double in that span at 10.0 points & 10.0 rebounds. He’s also recorded the second most assists over the last four games with 11.
During that stretch, the graduate recorded a season high 19 points against Idaho, in what was his third double-double of the season (15 boards). He also scored 13 points in big road win at TCU, in which he was a perfect 6-6 from the floor, to go with his 9 boards & 4 assists.
CERTA-FIED
Cole Certa has flashed NBA Jam on fire like moments at different points of this season. The sophomore sharpshooter flashed it in the season opener when he dropped 22 points on a career best 6-9 night from three-point range. He showed it vs. Mizzou when he converted three triples in the final 4:35 of the game, including the game-winning three with 17 seconds left.
But nothing tops his second half at TCU where he drained four triples in a row, ultimately converting five in the half and six in the game to finish with 20 points. It marked the second game this season in which Certa came off the bench and drained 5+ threes.
Over the last five games, Certa has averaged the third most points at 12.2 ppg. He’s 15-33 from three in that span (.455).
NOTRE NOTABLES
The Irish are 13 wins away from 2,000 all-time. They would become the eighth program to achieve this feat.
Logan Imes earned a career high 12 points vs. Purdue Fort Wayne (12/21). He shot 5-10 from the floor, including 2 triples. He also grabbed a career best 4 steals.
Certa is a perfect 22-22 from the FT line. This marks the third most free throws made for those Division I players who have not missed this season.
Njie grabbed a season-best 10 rebounds in the win over Evansville.
According to Haslam Metrics, Notre Dame allows the ‘Average Opponent’ to convert only 3.2% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 12th in the NCAA), and with a rating of 10.30, they’re 13th in potential points allowed off of the offensive glass as well.
Kenpom Rating: Offense 114.5 (81st) & Defense 102.1 (66th).

IU INDY MEN’S BASKETBALL
MEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO CLEVELAND TO RESUME HORIZON LEAGUE PLAY
CLEVELAND – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team will resume Horizon League play on Monday night (Dec. 29) when the Jaguars trek to Cleveland to face Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The game can also be heard in Central Indiana on 1430 Indy’s Sports Ticket. The Jaguars have dropped 13 straight to the Vikings dating back to 2019, including seven consecutive road losses to CSU. Head coach Ben Howlett’s team dropped its most recent game before the Christmas holiday, losing at Grand Canyon, 91-78.
Junior Kyler D’Augustino pumped in a team-high 24 points and freshman Maguire Mitchell added 16 points in the loss. It was a one-possession game with 9:29 to play after Mitchell connected on back-to-back treys, but the game shifted when the rookie was slapped with a technical foul for celebrating in the direction of his own bench. GCU responded by outscoring the Jaguars 15-2 over the next six minutes to cement the win.
Sophomore Aiden Miller emerged off the bench with 11 points, including three threes, and Kameron Tinsley added 10 points. Senior Finley Woodward flirted with a double-double with four points, a season-high nine rebounds and seven assists.
D’Augustino leads the team with 16.2 points per game and is shooting 57 percent from the field. Fifth-year Matt Compas is scoring 11.1 points per game and Mitchell scores 10.7 points per game. Mitchell’s 35 made threes are tied for the most in the country by a freshman this season.
QUOTABLE
“(GCU) is a really good team. They have a lot of size and they really attacked us off the dribble. I thought we did a good job of forcing some turnovers and creating some havoc, but we didn’t always capitalize on our opportunities. I’m proud of our guys. I think this game continues to prepare us for league play. Now we focus on getting home, getting some rest and getting some league wins,” Howlett said following the GCU loss.
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE

A Win Would…

• Give Maria Marchesano her 50th Horizon League win as Mastodon head coach
Chasing 2,500
Alana Nelson needs just six points to reach 2,500 in her career at all levels. She will be the only active player in the country with 2,500 points in her career, regardless of level.
Chasing 2,000
Jordan Reid needs 202 points to reach 2,000 in her career between Purdue Fort Wayne and Indiana Wesleyan.
It’s Raining Buckets, Get Under The Umbr-Ella!
Ella Riggs matched the program’s field goal percentage record in the Mastodons’ win over Aquinas on December 19 with a 10-for-11 performance from the field. She went 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc en route to a career-high 24 points.
Off The Bench? No Problem
Ella Riggs scored 24 points off the bench in the Mastodons’ 104-31 win over Aquinas (Dec. 19). She was the first Mastodon to score 20 or more off the bench since Ryin Ott in 2023.
A Saintly Performance
While Ella Riggs tied the program’s field goal percentage record, Alana Nelson was 9-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-7 from 3-point range against Aquinas on December 19. This was good for the third-best shooting effort from the floor and fourth-best from 3-point range in program history. It also gave Nelson a new season-high of 26 points.
A Few Percent Better
The Mastodons’ 59.2 field goal percentage against Aquinas was the fourth-best by a Mastodon team in the Division I era (2001-present).
Some Advanced Stats
In Purdue Fort Wayne’s win over Aquinas, the Mastodons held the Saints to an offensive rating of 39.8, the worst-ever by a Mastodon foe. Meanwhile, the Mastodons had an offensive rating of 138.4, the fifth-best in recorded history.
League Leader
Alana Nelson leads the Horizon League this season in points (225), points per game (17.3), effective field goal percentage (61.8) and field goals (79). In league play, she leads in points (69), points per game (23.0), field goals (24) and minutes per game (37.7).

Jordan Reid – 1,798 (1,395 at Indiana Wesleyan, 403 at PFW)
Lauren Lee – 1,669 (1,630 at Campbellsville, 39 at PFW)
Marchesano Madness
Maria Marchesano was selected for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Silver Anniversary Team, which recognizes high school graduates from the 2001 class. The team will be honored on April 25 at the Hall of Fame Museum in New Castle.
In the Polls
Purdue Fort Wayne was receiving votes in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 Poll on December 23. The Mastodons spent eight weeks in the Top 25 last season and received votes in all but the first poll of the 2024-25 season.
Lili Love
Lili Krasovec scored a career-high 16 points against Northern Illinois after going 7-of-10 from the floor. She has scored in double-digits seven times this season after doing so just twice at Boston College.
Lock In Lili
Lili Krasovec has scored 15+ points four times this season (Purdue, Eastern Michigan, Wright State, Northern Illinois). In those games, she was a combined 22-for-34 (64.7 percent) from the floor and 17-of-20 (85.0 percent) from the free throw line.
3-0 Starts
The Mastodons are 3-0 to start Horizon League play. There have only been seven other Mastodon teams to start 3-0 in league play, three of which were under Maria Marchesano: 2024-25 (Horizon), 2023-24 (Horizon), 2021-22 (Horizon), 2009-10 (Summit), 1995-96 (GLVC), 1993-94 (GLVC) and 1989-90 (GLVC).
3-Ball Fun
The Mastodons are 3-0 this season when they hit 10 or more 3-pointers this season. Under Maria Marchesano’s leadership, the ‘Dons have had 52 such games with a 41-11 record in those games.
Look at Lee!
Through three Horizon League games, Lauren Lee leads the HL with 5.0 assists per game. She also has a 3.8 assist to turnover ratio, which is second-best.
Reid About Jordan
Jordan Reid is the only player in the Horizon League in the top-10 in both rebounding (5.8) and steals (2.6) per game this season.
I’ll Take That
Jordan Reid is averaging 2.6 steals per game, which ranks second in the Horizon League and top-60 nationally. If that average holds for a season-long mark, it would be second-best in the program’s Division I era and fourth-best overall.
Inside The Arc? Guaranteed Bucket
Lili Krasovec is shooting 65.0 percent from the floor this season (52-for-80). If she qualified for the leaderboard with enough makes, she would lead the Horizon League in the field goal percentage category. Once she reaches 75 made baskets, she would qualify for the season mark in Mastodon history. Her 65.0 percent would rank first, topping Jazzlyn Linbo’s 58.3 from last season.
Home Sweet Gates
Purdue Fort Wayne is 49-21 (70.0 percent) at home under head coach Maria Marchesano and 34-6 (85.0 percent) over the last three seasons.
Magic Numbers 70 and 80
Under head coach Maria Marchesano, the Mastodons are 54-8 when they score 70 points or more and 25-2 when they hit 80.
Bench Mob
