(AP) — The Dallas Cowboys had every excuse for starting the game with a thud. Instead, they roared out in front and made the most of a road trip on Christmas Day. Dak Prescott threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns, and the Cowboys took control at the outset against Washington by reaching the end zone in each of their first three possessions in a 30-23 victory Thursday. Both teams were previously eliminated from playoff contention, which severely lessened the significance of this matchup between longtime NFC East rivals. But you couldn’t tell that to the Cowboys (7-8-1), who raced to a 21-3 lead. “It was huge,” Prescott said. “Not playing for anything, you want to get on top and not give them any hope. It’s important to make them play from behind, but we’ve got to do a better job of finishing.” Indeed, the Commanders (4-12) cut the gap to a touchdown on three different occasions. But they couldn’t complete the comeback and absorbed their 10th loss in 11 games. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer was absolutely certain his team wouldn’t be flat. Not after losing three straight and not with a .500 season still possible. “I never worry about these guys’ effort. I really don’t,” he said. “These guys are built different, man. I had no question we would come out and play hard. I thought we were hitting on all cylinders offensively early on.” Prescott completed 19 of 37 passes and helped Dallas convert all six of its fourth-down tries. His two TD passes gave him 30, tying Tony Romo’s franchise record of four seasons with at least 30 touchdown throws. Prescott shrugged off six sacks, including three by Jer’Zhan Newton. “I was in my zone. Whenever I catch fire, it’s hard to cool me off,” Newton said. Prescott can attest to that, noting, “I took some hits, but I was able to come out clean.” Playing without injured quarterbacks Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (quad, hand), Washington turned to 39-year-old journeyman Josh Johnson. Making his 10th career start and first since 2021, Johnson went 15 for 23 for 198 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. “I was just trying to play clean and give us a chance to win the game,” Johnson said. “We had a chance. Unfortunately, we just came up short.” Dallas ran 87 offensive plays to 41 for Washington. The Cowboys also dominated the time of possession by more than 17 minutes. But the outcome wasn’t decided until Dallas kept hold of the ball for the final two minutes, ending the game by — no surprise — converting a fourth down. Jacory Croskey-Merritt scored on runs of 10 and 72 yards for Washington. The latter touchdown got the Commanders to 24-17 in the third quarter, but Dallas restored its double-digit lead with a 52-yard field by Brandon Aubrey. Aubrey added a 51-yarder to make it 30-20 with 3:59 remaining. After Prescott threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jake Ferguson on the game’s opening drive, Johnson went 3 for 3 for 68 yards to get Washington to 7-3. The key play was a 41-yard completion to Deebo Samuel, Johnson’s longest since 2018. Samuel finished by running into Donovan Wilson, knocking the safety’s helmet off. On their second possession, the Cowboys converted three fourth downs on a 17-play march that ended with a touchdown run by Javonte Williams. Prescott then made it three TDs in three drives with an 86-yard scoring pass to KaVontae Turpin. VIKINGS ELIMINATE LIONS WITH DEFENSE-DOMINATING 23-10 VICTORY, RACKING UP 6 TURNOVERS AND 5 SACKS MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Harrison Smith reveled in his moment with the roaring Minnesota crowd, blowing kisses during an extended showing on the videoboard near the end of one of his best games in a 14-year career. The Vikings had a blast, even if their season is over next week. Smith, well, was flying around the field like a kid on Christmas. Jordan Addison took a jet sweep handoff 65 yards for the game-sealing touchdown with 3:43 left after the Vikings forced six turnovers and eliminated the Detroit Lions from contention for the playoffs with a 23-10 victory on Thursday. Smith, the six-time Pro Bowl safety, had one of the two interceptions and one of the five sacks of Jared Goff as the Vikings (8-8) won their fourth straight game. Smith also had three pass deflections, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. “When you can get out there with a defense like that and a play-caller like that, it’s just fun. I don’t care what day it is. I don’t care what’s on the line. I don’t care what’s at stake. We play a really aggressive style of football that I absolutely love,” said Smith, who was not ready to discuss his feelings about returning to play in 2026. Goff was charged with three lost fumbles, once on a sack and twice on errant snaps by backup center Kingsley Eguakun. With the third straight loss for the Lions (8-8), the Green Bay Packers clinched at least a wild-card spot and could still catch the Chicago Bears for the NFC North title that went to Detroit the past two seasons and Minnesota the year before that. “The story of the game is turnovers,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “You can’t turn the ball over six times and win in this league.” The Lions and Vikings combined for 29 wins last season, making this an attractive matchup for the NFL’s three-game Christmas Day showcase before injuries and other assorted setbacks turned them into also-rans in the top-heavy NFC. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer started for the injured J.J. McCarthy at quarterback and — with the Vikings missing starters at both tackle spots, center and tight end — took seven sacks while going just 9 for 16 for 51 yards against a relentless pass rush. The Vikings had only 75 net yards before Addison took the ball and burst around the right end untouched for his longest career score, capping it with a dive at the pylon to make sure the ball got in as he was pushed out of bounds. But Brosmer protected the ball the way Goff usually does, helping set up Will Reichard for three field goals and making sure the remarkable effort by the defense didn’t get wasted. “NFL football is hard, and people say it a lot,” Brosmer said. “NFL football is fun too. That’s not me saying I don’t enjoy this. My favorite part is the process.” Goff went 18 for 29 for 197 yards and a touchdown pass to Isaac TeSlaa late in the second quarter to cap a 19-play, 80-yard drive that took 10:08 off the clock. That was the first passing touchdown allowed by the Vikings in seven games, the only portion of the game the defense would like to have back. Everything else, including the holiday-themed halftime show for Netflix featuring rapper Snoop Dogg, felt like a party. “We’re out of the playoffs. Everybody shows up in white. They do their part,” Smith said, his voice cracking as he spoke of his respect for Vikings fans. “And one of these days, they’ll get it.” Season of taking The plus-6 turnover margin was the best in the NFL this season and tied with five other teams for the best in any game in the league in the past nine years, according to Sportradar. The only other time in Vikings history they’ve forced at least six turnovers without committing one was in 1975, when they had eight takeaways in a 38-0 win over Atlanta. Injury report Lions: LB Alex Anzalone and safety Thomas Harper were each sidelined by a concussion, with safety Avonte Maddox inactive with a back injury. Harper and Maddox had been starting in place of standouts Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, who are on injured reserve. … Eguakun was promoted from the practice squad and started in place for Graham Glasgow (knee), who was active. LT Taylor Decker (shoulder) was inactive. … DT Alim McNeill (abdomen) aggravated the injury that had him questionable to play. Vikings: Myles Price hurt his ankle returning the opening kickoff and didn’t return. … RB Jordan Mason (ankle) was inactive. Up next The Lions head to Chicago in Week 18, when the Vikings host Green Bay. Those games will be on either Jan. 3 or 4. NIX’S LATE TD PASS AND STAND BY BRONCOS DEFENSE FINISHES OFF 20-13 WIN OVER CHIEFS KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Broncos coach Sean Payton sent his offense back onto the field on fourth down Thursday night, the ball inside the Kansas City Chiefs’ 10-yard line and less than 2 minutes left on the clock — and no intention of ever snapping it. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones didn’t know that. And when he jumped, and the offsides penalty gave Denver a fresh set of down, Bo Nix needed a mere three more plays to hit R.J. Harvey with the go-ahead touchdown pass in a 20-13 victory Thursday night. One secured when the Broncos made one last stop in the closing second at their end of the field. “We were going to take the delay-of-game,” Payton said afterward. “Obviously that changed the complexion of the clock, and that was a big play. We were going to take the penalty and kick the field goal. That was the plan.” Now, the Broncos (13-3) are one step closer to locking up the AFC West, which they can do while watching at home if Houston beats the Chargers on Saturday. They also have a chance to still land the No. 1 seed and first-round playoff bye. “It would be relaxing,” Payton said of clinching this weekend. “It would be nice.” Nix also ran for a touchdown while throwing for 182 yards as the Broncos beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since September 17, 2015. They also have won four of the last five in the series following a string of 16 consecutive losses. “It’s great to get that win,” Payton said. “You always have to remember this: You’re playing the heart of a champion, Andy Reid and this team. I don’t care who comes out of that locker room. This is a team that basically has been at the top of our league for the better part of this century, and there’s a ton of respect we have for what they’ve been able to accomplish.” Third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun and tight end Travis Kelce tried to give Kansas City a chance in the final seconds, driving quickly down field after the Broncos had taken the lead. But a third-down pass at the Denver 26 was just out of Kelce’s reach, and Oladokun overthrew Marquise Brown in the end zone on fourth down to seal the outcome. The Chiefs (6-10) were missing Patrick Mahomes and backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, both of whom tore ligaments in their knees in back-to-back weeks, and were left to watch the game together from a suite. They also were missing Rashee Rice and several players on both sides of the ball that had been so crucial to their three straight Super Bowl trips. Oladokun wound up with 66 yards passing. Kelce had five catches for 36 of those yards in what might have been the last game played by the Pro Bowl tight end at Arrowhead Stadium — he plans to announce soon after the season whether he is retiring. “I’ll let that be a decision I’ll make with my family, friends, the Chiefs organization when the time comes,” Kelce said. The Broncos were nearly two-touchdown favorites, according to BetMGM, yet the Chiefs may have been inspired by hearing about the Vikings, who earlier in the day knocked off the favored Lions behind their defense and their own third-string quarterback. After giving up a grinding, 14-play drive that soaked up more than half the first quarter and net the Broncos a field goal, Kansas City allowed little else through the first 30 minutes. And along the way, a defense put its top two cornerbacks on injured reserve this week managed to pick off Nix, setting up a short field that Oladokun converted into his first career touchdown throw. It also happened to be Brashard Smith’s first career touchdown catch. The Broncos tried to answer with another 8-plus minute drive late in the half, but Courtland Sutton dropped a would-be touchdown toss in the closing seconds, and Wil Lutz had to kick his second chip-shot field goal to make it 7-6 at the break. Denver finally got one of its long, time-consuming drives into the end zone in the third quarter, though. The Chiefs had pushed the lead to 10-6 when the Broncos churned through 72 yards in nearly 10 minutes, and Nix finished by scrambling nine yards for the score. And the inability of the Kansas City offense to do much of anything was its undoing. The Chiefs managed just 16 yards on their first three possessions of the second half, and that gave the Broncos a chance. They drove 65 yards late in the fourth quarter, twice converting on third down and then getting a fourth-down gift when Jones went early inside the 10-yard line, allowing Nix to find Harvey in the back of the end zone for the eventual winning score. “We just did what we had to do,” Nix said. Injuries Broncos: C Luke Wattenberg (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve earlier in the day. Chiefs: WR Nikko Remigio (knee) was placed on IR. OL Jaylon Moore (knee) and DT Derrick Nnadi (illness) were inactive. Up next Denver wraps up the regular season next week against the Chargers. Kansas City finishes its season next week in Las Vegas. ========== NBA NEWS NBA ROUNDUP: SPURS SMOTHER THUNDER FOR THIRD TIME IN 13 DAYS De’Aaron Fox scored a game-high 29 points as the visiting San Antonio Spurs knocked off the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-102 to hand the Thunder their first back-to-back losses this season. The Spurs have won eight consecutive games — which does not include the NBA Cup final loss to the New York Knicks on Dec. 16 — to extend their longest winning streak since 2018-19. Three of the Thunder’s five defeats this season, including both of their past two, have come against San Antonio. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who came off the bench for the sixth consecutive game since missing nearly a month due to a calf injury, finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds in nearly 26 minutes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City with 22 points, but he shot just 7-for-19 from the field, including 1-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. Isaiah Hartenstein paired 13 points with 12 rebounds while no other Thunder player scored more than 12. KNICKS 126, CAVALIERS 124 Jalen Brunson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:05 left for host New York, which overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Cleveland. Brunson scored 13 of his 34 points over the final 7:15 for the Knicks, who mounted their biggest comeback win of the season. Reserves Jordan Clarkson (25 points) and Tyler Kolek (16 points, nine assists) had big games while Karl-Anthony Towns (11 points, 14 rebounds) posted a double-double. Donovan Mitchell scored 34 points for the Cavaliers, who blew a pair of double-digit leads and took their first loss this season when leading after three quarters. Darius Garland recorded 20 points and 10 assists. WARRIORS 126, MAVERICKS 116 Stephen Curry lost a personal scoring duel with Cooper Flagg in their first head-to-head matchup, but he teamed with Gary Payton II to stall a late rally as Golden State held off Dallas in San Francisco. Curry led the Warriors with 23 points in Golden State’s 13th consecutive appearance on Christmas Day. After the Mavericks closed within 110-104 with 4:28 to play, Payton converted a Draymond Green pass into his momentum-swinging dunk and Curry bombed in a 26-footer on Golden State’s next possession to reopen a double-digit lead with 3:45 left. Flagg went for a game-high 27 points and Brandon Williams added 26 for the Mavericks, who lost Anthony Davis for the night after he experienced right groin spasms in the fourth minute of the second quarter. Davis finished with three points, three rebounds and two blocks in 11 minutes. ROCKETS 119, LAKERS 96 Amen Thompson scored a game-high 26 points and Kevin Durant added 25 as visiting Houston never trailed Los Angeles to cap a 2-4 road trip on a good note. Jabari Smith Jr. notched 16 points while Alperen Sengun contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Rockets transformed a 10-point halftime lead into an 81-58 advantage on Smith’s tip-in with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Luka Doncic paced the Lakers with 25 points and seven assists while LeBron James posted 18 points in his 19th Christmas Day game. Austin Reaves scored 12 points in the first half, but he did not play in the second half due to left calf soreness. The Lakers were outrebounded 48-25. =========== TOP INDIANA HEADLINES/PRESS RELEASES GAME PREVIEW: PACERS VS CELTICS PACERS VOW TO ‘KEEP FIGHTING’ AHEAD OF REMATCH WITH CELTICS The Indiana Pacers will try to find their scoring touch and end a six-game losing streak when they meet the Boston Celtics on Friday night in Indianapolis. The Pacers haven’t won a game since Dec. 8, leaving coach Rick Carlisle one win shy of 1,000 career NBA victories. Indiana is last among NBA teams in scoring (109.2), field-goal percentage (42.9) and 3-point percentage (32.1). “We all have got to ask ourselves what can we do and everyone’s got to come in wanting to make a change and wanting to win,” Indiana forward Pascal Siakam said. “We’ve had some good stretches, (but) it’s not enough. “I think Pacers fans deserve it. We’ve all got to do better. And I’m going to keep trying — trying to do my best, to do what I can for us to win. … We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep fighting. We’ve got a lot to fight for. We’ve just got to find that joy, we’ve got to find that togetherness to get us out of it. That’s the only way.” The teams met in Boston on Monday, when the Celtics rallied for a 103-95 victory. The Pacers led by 20 points early in the third quarter when Boston coach Joe Mazzulla pulled all of his starters and sent his reserves into the game. It proved to be the spark the Celtics needed as Boston went on a 19-5 run to slice Indiana’s lead to six points before the starters returned to the court and closed out the win. “That’s part of the depth that we have,” Mazzulla said. “I mean, 82 games is a long time. The season is long. The standard that we have to play at, the effort that we have to play at, is hard. It’s difficult, and we need everybody to be able to do it. So there’s been stretches of the season where guys have done that for us.” The Celtics outscored the Pacers 60-34 in the second half and extended their winning streak to three games. Jaylen Brown had 31 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the victory. He has scored at least 30 points in each of his last seven games. “I think this has been my favorite season so far, being able to get an opportunity to lead a group,” Brown said. “A group of guys who … some of us, we have some championship experience, but we have five or six new guys who haven’t really played NBA basketball. And now we look like one of the better teams in the league. And that’s just credit to our coaching staff and credit to our leadership that we’ve been able to get those guys comfortable.” Indiana is coming off Tuesday’s 111-94 home loss to Milwaukee. T.J. McConnell tossed in a team-high 16 points in the loss. He did not play in Monday’s defeat in Boston because of left knee soreness. “I think the frustrating part sometimes is obviously we have six wins, but some of the losses we haven’t played to our full potential,” McConnell said. “We haven’t fought the way we do. If we lose a game, but we fight to the finish, I think a lot of us can live with that. We have to do that more consistently.” ========== INDIANA FOOTBALL FOOTBALL GAMEDAY: THE ROSE BOWL GAME (COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF QUARTERFINAL) GAME 14 The Rose Bowl Game | College Football Playoff Quarterfinal No. 11/11/9 Alabama (11-3, 7-1 SEC) vs. No. 1/1/1 Indiana (13-0, 9-0 B1G) Thursday, January 1, 2026 Rose Bowl Stadium | Pasadena, Calif. Alabama also became the fourth team in SEC history to defeat four consecutive ranked opponents including open dates, with the Tide also accomplishing the feat in 2016. ALABAMA IN THE AP POLL: The Crimson Tide’s No. 11 ranking in the Week 16 edition of the Associated Press Poll marked the 294th consecutive week that the Crimson Tide has appeared in the poll. That streak is the longest active streak in college football. The 294 weeks more than doubles second-place Georgia with the Bulldogs appearing in the poll for 148 consecutive weeks. Alabama’s 294 straight weeks tops the Crimson Tide’s previous program-long streak of 105 consecutive weeks under head coach Gene Stallings in the mid1990s. ALABAMA IN THE AP SINCE 2008: Alabama began the 2008 season at No. 24 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll. The Crimson Tide opened the year with a dominant 34-10 win over then-No. 9 Clemson in Atlanta, and since that win over the Tigers, UA has not exited the 293 polls that have followed. According to the College Poll Archive, the Tide is the only team to be represented on all 294 editions of the poll from the start of the 2008 season to the current week. The next closest team is Ohio State with 279 appearances followed by Oklahoma at 260. Alabama has spent 91.5 percent of the 18-plus years ranked in the top 10. A whopping 76.2 percent of that time Alabama has been ranked in the top five. The Crimson Tide has also been ranked No. 1 a total of 110 times since 2008. Only 16 other teams have earned the No. 1 ranking over that time, with the second-most appearances coming from Georgia at 40, while Ohio State owns the third-most appearances at 27. ALABAMA HAS THE MOST WINS SINCE 2008: Dating back to the start of the 2008 season, Alabama has won 219 games, which is the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
