SPEAKING OF SPORTS: THE COLTS GETTING LITTLE RESPECT AS CAMP CONTINUES

Needless to say, most NFL experts are giving the Indianapolis Colts any chance of making the playoffs. Most don’t project the Colts to have a winning record. The biggest reason is the question at the most important position on the field, quarterback. There is no doubt the Colts don’t have a playoff-caliber signal caller. The fourth pick in the 2023 draft Anthony Richardson, has yet to emerge as a reliable NFL starter because of injuries and his continued ineffectiveness. Richardson is an effective runner, but when he does, he gets injured. When Richardson throws the football, his completion rate is a terrible 48%. The Colts signed Daniel Jones in free agency, but he, too, has issues. Jones struggled as a passer with the Giants, and there’s no reason to believe he will be any better with the Colts. So, as you can see, the Colts are in trouble if Richardson or Jones don’t show a lot of improvement in training camp. There are also several question marks on the offensive line. Adding TE Tyler Warren from Penn State in the draft will help the passing attack. Warren is also a suitable run blocker. The receiving corps is solid, led by Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce. But, if they can’t get things settled at QB, it won’t matter.

The defense will rely on the interior defensive line anchored by veteran DeForest Buckner. The 31-year-old missed five games last season because of injuries, but he is still one of the most reliable players in the NFL. Grover Stewart, Eric Johnson, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Laiatu Latu, Kwitty Paye, and Neville Gallimore will also be key factors up front.

The secondary added Charvarius Ward and Camryn Bynum. If they can play at the NFL level, there is potential for this unit to be solid. Keeping CB JuJu Brents healthy is another key. He is a big corner with long arms and is very good in press coverage.

It’s too early to make too many projections, but it’s not too early to believe the Colts are in trouble if they can’t get Richardson or Jones to play with more consistency.
