COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKLY
SEC WEEK 10: LOADED WEEKEND BRINGS PIVOTAL TESTS FOR PLAYOFF HOPEFULS
Things to watch this week in the Southeastern Conference:
Game of the week
No. 2 Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC, No. 2 CFP) at No. 12 Ole Miss (6-2, 4-2, No. 10 CFP), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
It is the teams’ third meeting in 13 months and the stakes are high again after Ole Miss won the last showdown, 39-34 at the Sugar Bowl to send Georgia packing in the playoff. Ole Miss has little margin for error with two losses while Georgia looks to remain atop a packed SEC race and hold its CFP seeding.
Quarterback Gunner Stockton didn’t have his flashiest performances in October, with a three-turnover outing in the Bulldogs’ loss to Auburn and a quiet but steady 101 passing-yard game in Georgia’s 27-8 win over Florida.
Trinidad Chambliss also had a three-turnover game in Ole Miss’ loss to Texas before leading the Rebels to a win over Auburn with a strong second half. He is likely to be without running back Kewan Lacy again this week and will rely on Makhi Frazier and Shekai Mills-Knight to spark the running game.
Georgia is a 3.5-point favorite.
The undercards
No. 8 Kentucky (7-1, 5-1, No. 6 CFP) at No. 16 Tennessee (6-2, 3-2, No. 13 CFP), 6:15 p.m. ET (ESPN)
One of the conference’s biggest stunners this season, Kentucky faces a Tennessee just outside the CFP field in the initial rankings.
QB George MacIntyre has started the last three games for Tennessee after stepping in for Faizon Brandon, though coach Josh Heupel had not named his starter by midweek.
Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey has thrown for 1,755 yards and 14 touchdowns with one pick through eight games. The transfer from Notre Dame has helped the Wildcats to their best record since 2018 and a strong CFP slot.
Tennessee is a 6.5-point favorite.
No. 9 Alabama (6-2, 4-2, No. 5 CFP) at No. 15 LSU (6-2, 3-2, No. 14 CFP), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
Similar to the Kentucky-Tennessee game, this one has a highly ranked CFP team in the Crimson Tide against an LSU team with a golden opportunity to burnish its own credentials with a win.
Alabama will look to return to its early-season form with several key players hopeful to return from injuries this week: Ryan Coleman-Williams, Zabien Brown, Racin Delgatty and Terrance Green.
LSU, which is favored by 5.5 points, should have TE Trey’Dez Green back after a knee injury, Whit Weeks has returned to the practice field and quarterback Sam Leavitt said he’s “running around 100%” after a lingering hamstring injury.
Impact players
— South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers as the AP Player of the Week after accounting for 397 yards of total offense and five touchdowns against Oklahoma. He ran for two scores two of his three touchdown passes were for 79 yards or longer.
— Georgia LB Chris Cole continues to make a strong case for a high first-round draft pick, leading the Bulldogs with nine tackles, a sack and a 66-yard scoop-and-score touchdown en route to a 27-8 win over Florida. It’s Cole’s second defensive touchdown of the season.
– Texas LB Rasheem Biles had eight tackles, four for a loss and a career-high three sacks and two forced fumbles to help the Longhorns to a 31-3 win over Mississippi State.
A look at the numbers
Six SEC teams enter this weekend with a 6-2 record and playoff hopes on the line. … Ten SEC teams are ranked in the AP Top 25: No. 2 Georgia, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Texas, No. 15 LSU, No. 16 Tennessee, No. 19 Missouri, No. 23 South Carolina and No. 25 Florida. … The same 10 appeared in the initial CFP rankings, though largely in a different order: Georgia (2), Alabama (5), Kentucky (6), Texas (7) and Ole Miss (10).

OHIO STATE AND OREGON ATTEMPT TO BOOST THEIR PLAYOFF HOPES IN BIG TEN’S SPOTLIGHT GAME THIS WEEK
Things to watch this weekend in the Big Ten:
Game of the week
Oregon (5-3, 3-2, No. 23 CFP ) at No. 11 Ohio State (6-2, 4-1, No. 12 CFP), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
Oregon and Ohio State have reached the playoff each of the last two seasons, but both have plenty of work to do to get back there this year.
This is a clear elimination game for Oregon, and Ohio State also might not be able to afford another loss. Both teams have struggled after losing their starting quarterbacks – Oregon’s Dante Moore and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin – to injuries.
Ohio State is coming off a 30-18 loss at Southern California. Oregon had lost two of three before beating then-No. 20 Northwestern 34-26.
The undercard
No. 5 UCLA (8-0, 5-0, No. 8 CFP) at Minnesota (5-3, 3-2), Saturday, noon ET (Fox)
UCLA puts its unbeaten record at stake at Minnesota, which is coming off an overtime loss at No. 6 Indiana (No. 4 CFP).
No. 21 Iowa (6-2, 3-2, No. 19 CFP) at Northwestern (6-2, 3-2)
Northwestern ranks second in the Big Ten in yards per game (438.1) while Iowa ranks 12th in the FBS in yards allowed per game (275.5). Iowa has beaten Northwestern four straight times after going 1-4 in this series from 2016-20.

Inside the numbers
Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has 15 career games with at least 100 yards receiving to tie Marvin Harrison Jr. for the school record. Smith has 3,625 career yards receiving. The Big Ten record is owned by John Standeford, who had 3,788 for Purdue from 2000-03. … UCLA’s 27-0 victory over Nevada was its first shutout since a 41-0 triumph over Oregon State in 2015. UCLA has a Bowl Subdivision-leading 26 takeaways and 10 fumble recoveries. The Bruins have intercepted 16 passes to rank second in FBS, behind No. 22 New Mexico (17). … Iowa has an FBS-leading 12 shutouts since 2018. … Indiana’s overtime triumph over Minnesota marked the first time in FBS history that each team had made a field goal of at least 60 yards in a single game. The field goals were made by Minnesota’s Luke Drzewiecki and Indiana’s Paddy McAteer. … Indiana’s Tobi Osunsanmi has a sack in a school-record eight straight games. … Illinois RB Javari Barnett’s 64-yard burst in a 20-17 win over Maryland was the longest touchdown run by an Illinois freshman since Ke’Shawn Vaun had a 78-yarder against Purdue in 2015. … Michigan hasn’t allowed an opponent to complete a second-half pass in its last two games, though the Wolverines did allow a touchdown pass in overtime in their loss to Indiana.

NO. 1 MIAMI’S TRIP TO NO. 4 NOTRE DAME, VIRGINIA TECH’S TRIP TO SMU HEADLINE ACC’S WEEKLY SCHEDULE
Things to watch this weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference:
Game of the week
No. 1 Miami (8-0) at No. 4 Notre Dame (7-1), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
This one has been circled on the schedule all year, rooted in the Hurricanes beating the Fighting Irish last year in a game that ultimately swung a College Football Playoff bid to Miami instead of Notre Dame. And the Hurricanes rode that all the way to the CFP title game while the Irish opted out of playing in the postseason at all.
The Hurricanes have largely rolled through their schedule with the nation’s top-scoring offense (47.6), though receiver and Heisman Trophy candidate Malachi Toney suffered an ankle injury this week and is scheduled for surgery that will sideline him for multiple weeks. In addition, Miami is coming off a game in which its defense struggled to get off the field in a comeback win at North Carolina on Saturday.
The Fighting Irish suffered their only loss at No. 7 BYU on Oct. 17. This is the first of four straight against ACC foes to close Notre Dame’s schedule.
The undercard
Virginia Tech (6-2, 3-2 ACC) at SMU (6-2, 4-2), Friday, 7 p.m. ET (ESPN)
The Mustangs are coming off a loss to Syracuse in a game that dropped them behind No. 14 Wake Forest in the chase to reach the ACC championship game. That put them in a logjam of two-loss teams in the standings, a group that includes the Hokies in James Franklin’s first season in Blacksburg. That makes this something approaching an elimination game.
Clemson (5-3, 3-2) at Syracuse (4-4, 2-4), Saturday, noon ET (ESPN2)
The Tigers have no margin for error at this point as part of that group of two-loss teams, with losses to Miami and Virginia Tech. Now they’re traveling to face the Orange, which started 0-4 in the league but edged North Carolina in overtime and then upset SMU last week.
Impact players
— N.C. State RB Davion Gause. With starter Duke Scott still sidelined by injury, Gause ran 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in the weekend win against California in the first game under interim coach Todd Goebbel. That was Gause’s best output for the Wolfpack since transferring from UNC and he is positioned for a role even when Scott returns.entering Saturday’s visit by Duke.
— Louisville QB Lincoln Kienholz. The Cardinals can’t afford a stumble in Saturday’s trip to Georgia Tech. Kienholz has run for five touchdowns in Louisville’s current three-game winning streak.

An early riser in Utah for a Holy War game that could have significant implications on who makes the Big 12 championship game and College Football Playoff. Kickoff is at 10 a.m. local time for the first meeting between the schools with both in the AP top 10.
Utah has a 14-game winning streak since losing 24-21 to BYU last season. That was BYU’s third win in a row against its instate rival — their football stadiums are only about 45 miles apart — after the Utes won nine in a row before that. Utah leads the series, which dates to 1895, 52-31-4.
The Utes, who last reached 9-0 in their undefeated 2008 season, are the lone remaining undefeated team in the Big 12. The conference’s last undefeated team was Texas for its 2005 national championship.
Devon Dampier is 18-2 as Utah’s starting quarterback. BYU sophomore Bear Bachmeier is 19-3.

The Horned Frogs have the Big 12’s top defense allowing 14.1 points and 287.6 total yards per game. They just beat Kansas 22-16, their highest-scoring game against a Power Four opponent this season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKS: NOTRE DAME OVER MIAMI IN WHAT SHOULD BE ANOTHER CLOSE TOP-5 MATCHUP
No. 1 Miami at No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday will be the season’s third matchup of teams in the top five of The Associated Press Top 25. If it’s like the first two, it will be close.
Texas-Ohio State and Ohio State-Indiana were decided by a total of five points, and seven of the last nine regular-season top-five matchups have been one-score games.
The average margin of victory in top-five regular-season games since 2000 is 11.9 points, according to Sportradar, with 25 of the 54 decided by eight points or less and the biggest rout being 44 points (No. 5 Oklahoma 65-21 over No. 2 Texas Tech).
Miami has won all four of its top-five regular-season matchups since 2000 and Notre Dame has lost two of three. The Fighting Irish need this one badly to make the College Football Playoff.
The picks for FBS vs. FBS games, with AP rankings and betting lines. All games are on Saturday unless noted:
No. 1 Miami (plus 5 1/2) at No. 4 Notre Dame
Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney and the Hurricanes meet their match in Notre Dame’s top-ranked defense. CJ Carr goes against a Miami secondary that’s given up over 300 yards passing in three straight games.
Pick: Notre Dame 28-24.
No. 2 Georgia at No. 12 Mississippi (plus 3 1/2)
Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss has been sharp in two previous meetings with the Bulldogs, passing for 635 yards and having a hand in five touchdowns. Georgia star CB Ellis Robinson got dinged up last week against Florida.
Pick: Mississippi 24-23.
No. 7 BYU at No. 3 Utah (minus 5)
Utah has turned over the ball twice in each of its last four games and the Utes coughed it up a total of five times in their last two meetings with BYU, losses decided by a total of four points. Utes win if they take care of ball.
Pick: Utah 26-20.
No. 5 UCLA at Minnesota (plus 5)
A UCLA win makes Bruins 9-0 for first time since 1998. If Gophers had some oomph on offense, it would be tempting to pick them at home.
Pick: UCLA 17-14.
No. 8 Kentucky (plus 6 1/2) at No. 16 Tennessee
QB George MacIntyre has the backing of his teammates, but Volunteers coach Josh Heupel hasn’t committed to him starting a fourth straight game. Vols are 5-0 against Kentucky under Heupel.
Pick: Tennessee 27-23.
No. 9 Alabama at No. 15 LSU (minus 5 1/2)
LSU can force the CFP selection committee to re-think what many see as an inflated No. 5 initial CFP ranking for the Crimson Tide.
Pick: LSU 30-24.
No. 10 Texas at No. 19 Missouri (plus 3)
Tigers’ Austin Simmons has put up better numbers than Arch Manning and is 4-0 at home, and SEC rushing leader Jamal Roberts just went over 1,000 yards.
Pick: Missouri 26-24.
Oregon at No. 11 Ohio State (minus 7 1/2)
This was circled on calendar when Ohio State and Oregon were 1-2 to start season. It’s still a huge game because of the huge playoff (elimination) implications for the two-loss Buckeyes and three-loss Ducks.
Pick: Ohio State 31-20.
West Virginia (plus 16 1/2) at No. 13 Texas Tech
Mountaineers can score lots of points; their defense tends to give up more. Tech’s Thomas Castellanos is the type of mobile QB who causes all kinds of problems for a team like West Virginia.
Pick: Texas Tech 45-35.
Cincinnati (plus 11) at No. 17 Houston
Cougars used bye week to get key players healthy for a stretch run that will require them to win out and get lots of help to reach Big 12 title game.
Pick: Houston 33-27.
No. 20 Boise State (minus 17) at Colorado State
Broncos have lots to play for as the leading Group of Six team for the CFP. QB Maddux Madsen is day-to-day. Max Cutforth showed against Texas State last week he’s more than capable if called on.
Pick: Boise State 48-24.
No. 21 Iowa (plus 2 1/2) at Northwestern
Hawkeyes had success mixing short passing game with the run in first game without leading rusher Kamari Moulton and will test a Northwestern defense designed to prevent the deep ball.
Pick: Iowa 24-23.
No. 22 New Mexico at Nevada (plus 9 1/2)
Lobos will be playing as ranked team for first time in program history on Friday. They’ve held three of last four opponents under 200 yards, and Nevada’s struggling offense has had three starting QBs because of injuries.
Pick: New Mexico 21-17.
Texas A&M at No. 23 South Carolina (minus 7)
Gamecocks have won three straight since QB LaNorris Sellers stepped up his game. Aggies in danger of falling below .500 for first time since 2022 under Jimbo Fisher.
Pick: South Carolina 33-21.
TCU (plus 8 1/2) at No. 24 Arizona
Noah Fifita will be in bounce-back mode Friday night after fading in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech.
Pick: Arizona 27-22.
Oklahoma at No. 25 Florida (minus 6)
Jason Whitten takes over as Sooners’ play-caller and it’s not known whether John Mateer will remain starting QB. Gators high on their defense after strong second half against Georgia.
Pick: Florida 29-21.
Byes: No. 6 Indiana, No. 18 USC.

Justin Brazeau and Nick Robertson scored for Pittsburgh, which has lost four straight games (0-3-1). Kaedan Korczak assisted on both goals. Arturs Silovs allowed six goals on 24 shots for the Penguins.
Lightning 4, Blackhawks 1
Ilya Mikheyev scored twice against his former club, and Tampa Bay stayed spotless at home against the NHL’s worst road team by toppling Chicago.
Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh also tallied for the Atlantic Division club, which extended its franchise-record home winning streak to 8-0-0 to start a season. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 25 saves in his 600th start, joining Sergei Bobrovsky (802) and Connor Hellebuyck (618) as the only active backstops to hit the milestone.
Roman Kantserov scored and Arvid Soderblom stopped 31 shots as the Blackhawks, who have lost five in a row, were swept in back-to-back games in Florida and fell to 0-7-1 on the road.
Jets 6, Canucks 2
Six different players scored and Stuart Skinner made 24 saves as Winnipeg routed visiting Vancouver.
Dawson Mercer scored his first goal of the season as part of a two-point night, and Mark Scheifele finished with a goal and an assist. Alex Iafallo, Cole Koepke, Neal Pionk and Mario Ferraro also scored, while Kyle Connor and Dylan DeMelo each had two assists.
Liam Ohgren and Brock Boeser scored for the Canucks, who have lost four in a row and are 1-13-1 in their last 15. Leevi Merilainen stopped 23 of 29 shots for Vancouver, losing his third consecutive start.

INDIANA SPORTS RELEASES/HEADLINES
COLTS FOOTBALL
As Jonathan Taylor – like the rest of us – awaits a resolution amid swirling trade rumors, the Colts running back’s focus remains on his team’s upcoming game.
And while Taylor acknowledged he can’t dodge those rumors, he’s adept at not letting them disrupt his work and preparation for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lucas Oil Stadium.
“You can’t avoid it,” Taylor said. “It’s definitely (on the) internet, all that stuff. You can’t avoid it, but it’s more about trying to block that out.
“… You’re not going to avoid it, not until it’s all over.”
At some point between when you’re reading this at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, which is the NFL’s trade deadline, we’ll know if Taylor will remain with the Colts or be dealt to another team. A resolution will come either before or shortly after that time.
But, again, Taylor is thinking more about Sunday, when he’ll take the field for the Colts against the Cowboys.
“We got an opportunity, especially this week after last week, to come back and put a better product on the field,” Taylor said. “That’s my biggest goal. I mean, last week was tough. You never want to go and put that on display, as a whole, as a group. … Just having the opportunity to go out there and not necessarily make things right, but put a better product on the field than last game, that’s our main goal. We got to to out there and we got to get a win. It’s at home. The fans deserve it.”
Taylor, in the Colts’ 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, rushed eight times for 23 yards. His diminished usage didn’t have anything to do with trade speculation; the Colts quickly fell behind and were down 28-0 at halftime, then took their starters out in the fourth quarter.
After Week 8, Taylor had strong comments about his own play, and he said Thursday he’s working toward finding ways to better help his team whether he has the ball in his hands or not. That’s his mantra for Sunday, and then by Tuesday at 4 p.m., he’ll find out with the rest of us where he’ll play his next game – either at Lucas Oil Stadium or somewhere else.
“The past couple weeks, it’s kind of been the same thing, but it won’t be until Tuesday at that time where then you’ll know exactly what’s going on, exactly what the verdict is,” Taylor said. “You just have to continue to go to work. You got to try to win the game, play your best game to help your team win and then let the chips fall where they may.”
############
The Colts on Thursday held their second practice of Week 9 leading up to Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lucas Oil Stadium.
For the second straight day, linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither (knee) did not participate in practice. Cornerback Justin Walley, who has not practiced since before the Colts game against the Vikings, remained sidelined with a knee injury.
Defensive tackle Grover Stewart also did not practice due to a veteran rest day.
Tight end Drew Ogletree returned to practice in a limited capacity after missing Wednesday with a knee injury.
Running back Jonathan Taylor, wide receiver Keenan Allen and cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. all practiced in full after having rest days.
##############
Colts running back Jonathan Taylor addresses swirling trade speculation surrounding him as the trade deadline quickly approaches Tuesday. While Taylor reads and hears things, he makes sure it does not impact his preparation and practice. Taylor then evaluates his season so far, and what he hopes to do better the rest of the way. Defensive end Caden Curry explains how players are stepping up to fill the void of DeForest Buckner following Buckner’s trade to San Francisco. Curry describes the challenge that veteran quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense presents. He also praises the effort and energy fellow rookie CJ Allen is bringing as he steps into starting role: https://www.colts.com/video/indianapolis-colts-running-back-jonathan-taylor-caden-curry-colts-vs-dallas-cowboys-locker-talk-week-9-discuss-trade-rumors-nfl-trade-deadline-deforest-buckner-san-francisco-49ers-cj-allen

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — This is the Darren Harris Indiana recruited, a guard who can score all over the court, a veteran who can stretch defenses to the breaking point.
On Thursday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Bellarmine broke. Harris scored a career-high 23 points, seven more than he’d ever scored in two seasons at Duke, as the Hoosiers (2-0) rolled to a 92-69 victory.
Harris finished 6-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-10 on 3-pointers.
It was a strong follow up to his 1-for-7 shooting three nights earlier against Eastern Illinois.
“It starts with my teammates setting me up,” Harris said, “and keeping confidence in me. I didn’t shoot it well the last couple of games, so I looked at film, knowing my shot better than anyone. See what’s natural. Making little tweaks, make my follow through a little stronger, holding it a little better and it worked.”
At Duke, Harris was a reserve. Now, he’s a starter with the resulting burden.
“This is a brand-new situation,” he said. “It’s a new team, new coach, new city, new school, a new role. It’s just getting comfortable and getting used to playing heavy minutes again.”
Coach Darrian DeVries is well aware of what a comfortable Harris can do.
“He hasn’t had a couple of good shooting games in a row,” DeVries said, “but just having the confidence to shoot through that, especially when a guy is coming to a new team, a new arena, a new situation.
“We’ve seen it in the summer and the fall, and in his high school days. It was just a matter of time. He’s a kid who tries every day to give us what he can. He wants to do well so bad, so it was nice to see him have a great night.”
A much more aggressive Harris made an early scoring impact against a methodical Bellarmine team determined to dictate a slower pace. His 15 first-half points, combined with fellow guard Bryce Lindsay’s 13, fueled IU’s 50-26 halftime lead.
Lindsay finished with 15 points and four assists.
Guard Markus Burton, so good in his Hoosier debut against Eastern Illinois (19 points, 7-for-8 shooting), struggled with 0-for-7 shooting before fouling out. He did have four assists and two rebounds.
Fellow starting guard Jaeden Mustaf added five points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Imagine how good the Hoosiers will be when all four guards are clicking at the same time. Harris can.
“It’s going to make us really hard to beat,” he said. “We have so many weapons, so many ways we can beat you. We can beat you inside, outside, in transition. We can have a really good defensive team. When we get to the level we can get at, it’s scary.”
Freshman forward Trevor Manhertz followed his 11-point college debut against Eastern Illinois with nine points and five rebounds. He again made two 3-pointers.
Forward Sam Alexis came on strong for 12 points and six rebounds. Forward Aiden Sherrell also had 12 points and six rebounds.
Even a couple of banked-in 3-pointers couldn’t keep Bellarmine (0-2) competitive, although it did win the second half, 43-42, as the Hoosiers went heavy to the bench in the final minutes.
Now that DeVries has had two games to evaluate his team, what are his thoughts?
“The first-half teams have been really good,” he said with a smile. “The second-half teams, our communication has dropped defensively.
“For us, it’s maintaining that focus when you have a lead. You know the quality you have to have. I don’t think our defensive intensity in both of the second halves was up to our standard. So great first halves, in stretches offensively and defensively, but we have to make sure we can maintain that for a full 40 minutes.”
IU’s 1967 Big Ten title team was honored during the game.
******
Harris opened the game with a 3-pointer, and then two free throws. Center Samet Yigitoglu dunked. A Lindsay 3-pointer pushed IU ahead 13-5 after seven minutes. A second Lindsay 3-pointer made it 18-7. The Hoosiers limited Bellarmine to just eight shots with six turnovers in 10 minutes.
Harris’s second 3-pointer and a Yigitoglu layup boosted IU to a 24-9 lead with eight minutes remaining. A Manhertz 3-pointer off a Sherrell assist made it 30-15. Another Harris 3-pointer gave IU a 38-20 lead with four minutes left in the half.
Lindsay’s three-point play off a fastbreak, and then a 3-pointer off a Burton assist helped the Hoosiers take a 50-26 halftime lead. Harris led with 15 points. Lindsay had 13. IU had 11 assists against three turnovers while shooting 57 percent from the field.
Harris opened the second half with his fourth 3-pointer. A few minutes later, he added a fifth as IU surged to a 57-36 lead and beyond.
Next up — the Hoosiers play Syracuse (2-0) on Monday at Indianapolis’s Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

INDIANA SWIMMING
INDIANAPOLIS – No. 2/3 Indiana dominated the College Swimming League Wild Card match Thursday (Nov. 5) night inside the IU Natatorium to clinch the final spot in Friday’s Championship match.
The CSL’s trophy match will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET from Indianapolis. The Hoosiers – who had perhaps the toughest route to the championship stage – will race against No. 8/1 Virginia, No. 6/4 Tennessee and No. 7/8 NC State, three teams that automatically qualified for the final from their first two matches. Fans can watch the match on ESPNU or via the ESPN+ and DAZN digital platforms.
Indiana cruised to victory Thursday night, scoring 592 points to outpace No. 9/7 Louisville (456), No. 10/8 Stanford (357.5) and No. 3/6 Cal (314.5). The Hoosiers won 23 of 30 events, swept eight events (men + women) and broke three CSL records in the IU Natatorium, just an hour away from their home pool.
Liberty Clark continued her CSL tear, winning the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle for the third time in as many CSL matches this season. Her performance of the night, though, came in the 200 freestyle relay. The second-year star broke her own 50 free program with her split of 21.15, a tenth faster than her previous best time.
Her classmate, Alex Shackell, had the busiest night swimming in her hometown. Shackell again swept her butterfly events, helped IU win that 200 free relay, won the Skins event and then helped IU win the Super Skins event to end the night. Shackell and Grana went one-two in Skins, surviving four consecutive heats of 50 butterfly.
Miroslav Knedla hit his stride Thursday night, setting CSL records with wins in the 100 backstroke (45.12) and 200 backstroke (1:37.77). His 200 back time moved him from No. 7 all-time to No. 2 behind teammate Owen McDonald. Knedla also won the men’s Skins events, knocking out four rounds of the 50 back. He rescued an Indiana win in the 200 freestyle relay, coming back to win as the anchor leg.
Josh Bey won three events himself fresh off a great short course world trials last week. Bey started the night with a CSL record in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:50.73), knocking off Cal’s reigning NCAA Champion Yamato Okadome for the second consecutive CSL meet. He followed that with victories in the 200 IM and 200 free.
Indiana’s quartet of Grana, Anita Bottazzo, Shackell and Kristina Paegle have won the Super Skins event – four rounds of 200 medley relay – in each of its three CSL meets this season. The Hoosiers put up a time of 1:35.56 in the final heat, their best performance of the four heats.

Indiana will race in the final match of the inaugural College Swimming League season Friday night at 4:30 p.m. ET inside the IU Natatorium.

GAMEDAY INFORMATION — GAME 02
Purdue (0-1, 0-0 B1G) vs. Valparaiso (1-0, 0-0 MVC)
Friday, November 6, 2026 | 6:30 p.m. ET
West Lafayette, Indiana | Mackey Arena (14,876)
TELEVISION: Big Ten Network (Chris Vosters, Bruce Weber)
RADIO: Purdue Global Radio Network (Rob Blackman, Bobby Riddell)
THE SCENE SETTER
• Kicking off a season-long, five-game homestand after lessons learned in the season opener against No. 15 Gonzaga, Purdue looks for its first win of the season when Valparaiso makes the short trip down I-65 for a Friday night battle in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers fell to Gonzaga 78-72 in Las Vegas in Monday’s opener, while Valparaiso was impressive in a 80-58 win over Western Illinois in its opener on Monday.
• The five-game homestand commences on Friday night and will include two straight Missouri Valley Conference opponents (Valparaiso; Illinois State on Monday) on the docket. All five opponents on the homestand are ranked in the top 225 via KenPom.com, including three in the top 140.
BOILER NOTES
• Purdue opens its home season on Friday night against Valparaiso, owning a 116-12 (.906) record in its home openers all-time. In Mackey Arena home openers, Purdue is 52-7 (.881).
• Prior to Friday’s game, Purdue will unveil the 2026 Big Ten Tournament Championship banner. The title marked Purdue’s fourth Big Ten title (RS or tournament) in the last four seasons.
• Purdue is college basketball’s 10th-winningest program in the country, owning an “official” NCAA all-time record of 1,983 – 1,102 (.643). Purdue needs 17 wins to become the ninth school in NCAA history with 2,000 victories.
• Purdue owns a 61-2 (.968) record all-time in Mackey Arena against current members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The lone losses have come to Indiana State (Dec. 1970, Nov. 1978).
• A win over Valparaiso will prevent an 0-2 start. The last time Purdue started the year 0-2 came in the 1976-77 season (finished 19-9; NCAA T.).
• Purdue has won 22 straight games against non-conference, in-state foes, dating to a Nov. 2001 loss to Butler. Matt Painter is 19-0 against in-state, non-conference opposition and is 33-4 against all in-state opposition.
• Purdue has won 23 straight home games in the month of November and is 71-3 (.959) at home under Matt Painter during the month. The losses have come to Texas (Nov. 2019), Villanova (Nov. 2016) and Bucknell (Nov. 2012). All-time, Purdue is 101-8 (.927) in Mackey during November.
• Over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17), Purdue owns the ninth-best home record in the country at 140-19 (.881). Among power-conference teams, Purdue ranks fourth in homecourt winning percentage during that time frame (Houston, Kansas, Duke).
• Matt Painter (501) is just 12 wins from passing his mentor and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Gene Keady (512) on the school’s all-time wins list. The earliest that Painter could pass Keady would be Dec. 19, vs. Colorado in the Indy Classic.
• With Painter reaching 500 wins last season against Miami, Fla., in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Purdue became the second school in NCAA history to have two coaches with at least 500 victories (Kansas – Bill Self, Phog Allen).
• In the season opener against Gonzaga, Purdue didn’t start an Indiana native. The last time that happened came on Feb. 11, 1982, against Ohio State (Joe Gampfer – Ohio; Mike Scearce – Kentucky; Russell Cross – Illinois; Keith Edmonson – Texas; Kevin Stallings – Illinois). More research is needed, but it appears that season is the only year since 1959-60 that didn’t have an Indiana standout in the starting lineup.
• For the first time since the 2014-15 season, Purdue did not have a player voted to the preseason All-Big Ten Team.
• Purdue has had a consensus first- or second-team All-American in eight of the past 10 seasons despite never enrolling a top-30 recruiting class and just one top-30 prospect during that span. This year’s freshmen class broke the trend, ranked in the top 15 nationally.
• Purdue has sold out its ticket allotment for the upcoming season, with the exception of the Cal Baptist (Dec. 21) game. Purdue enters the year with the fourth-longest sellout streak in America at 106 games. Tonight’s contest with Valparaiso will be the 107th straight sellout.

• After the hot start to the first, Purdue cooled off in the second shooting 33.3% from the floor and committing nine fouls. The visitors took advantage of the foul trouble to go 9-of-10 at the line and carry a 38-35 lead at the break.
• Purdue rolled back into the lead with an 11-4 run to start the third. The Boilermakers allowed just two field goals in the opening half of the quarter.
• Eastern Michigan kept it a one-score game for most of the third, before Wickstrom and Hunter hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Purdue ahead 60-54 going to the fourth. The Boilermakers outscored Eastern Michigan 25-16 in the frame.
• Purdue built its lead to as many as 18 in the fourth quarter, holding the Eagles to just seven points over the first seven minutes of the period.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame women’s basketball (1-0) will begin its 2026-27 home slate on Friday, as the No. 13 Irish host Stonehill (0-1) at Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish are coming off of a 99-75 win over Villanova in Rome on Sunday. In the first-of-its-kind opener, Notre Dame was led by All-American Hannah Hidalgo, who posted 32 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Sophomore forward Leah Macy was equally as impressive against Villanova, scoring 27 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in her Irish debut; the five-star recruit sat out last season rehabbing a torn ACL. Macy joins Brianna Turner as the only two Irish players to record a game with 27+ points and 14+ rebounds this century.
In addition to Hidalgo and Macy, Madison St. Rose (17), Jenica Lewis (11) and Jacy Abii (10) also scored in double-figures in their Notre Dame debuts. St. Rose and Lewis had four and three triples, respectively, while Abii notched eight rebounds.
Stonehill is coming off a season-opening loss at the hands of Providence on Tuesday. The Skyhawks were led by Brooke Paquette’s 21 points. Paquette was 5-7 from three-point range and 7-14 overall. Megan Sias and Reese Roggenburk also chipped in 11 points a piece.
Friday will be the first ever meeting between Notre Dame and Stonehill. Will Ek and Bria Goss will be on the call from Purcell Pavilion, and the game tips off at 7 p.m. ET on ACCNX.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S SOCCER
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-1-6, 8-1-1) closed out the regular season with a huge 1-0 win over the Miami Hurricanes (10-5-3, 4-4-2) on Thursday night. With the win, the Irish are the 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Regular Season Champions.
This is first ACC regular-season title for Doug and Lisa Jones Family Head Women’s Soccer Coach Nate Norman and just the second ACC regular-season title in program history. Coincidentally, the last time the Irish won the regular season title was in 2016, where the Irish clinched with a 2-0 win over Miami on Oct. 27, 2016 at Alumni Stadium.
Notre Dame’s scoring was led by junior Grace Restovich, who recorded the game-winner for her second goal of the season. She was assisted by junior forward Lily Joseph and junior forward Izzy Engle. While the duo have each dished out a team-best five assists, Engle leads the team in goals (9) and points (23) and Joseph is second in goals (7) and points (16).
The Irish held the Hurricanes to just two shots on the night as they recorded their seventh clean sheet of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish held possession to start and were able to outshoot the Hurricanes 12-0 through the first 45 minutes of play. While the Irish had several scoring opportunities, it would be Izzy Engle with the first look of the night. Engle would record 5 of Notre Dame’s 12 first half shots, hungry to put the Irish on the board.
Shortly after, shifty footwork from Bristol Kersh and then Joseph led to a shot from Joseph just outside the six-yard box. While her shot was saved, the rebound led to an Engle header, but the Miami goalkeeper made yet another stop.
As the Irish remained aggressive, another great scoring chance came from Restovich in the 18th minute, but her shot would land just wide of the target.
Engle continued to find opportunities as she would have back-to-back looks in the 25th and 26th minutes. Her first header would land high, but her second shot that she fired from 20 yards out resulted in an impressive save from Miami to keep the Irish off the board.
With sublime footwork, Joseph took a shot from distance in the 38th minute, but it would result in another Miami save. The Hurricanes recorded five saves on Notre Dame’s 12 shots in the first half.
Despite Notre Dame’s persistent attacking efforts, it was a scoreless first half at Alumni Stadium.
In the 57th minute, the Irish’s relentless endeavors would finally pay off. As Engle attacked into the left side of the box, she found the feet of Joseph, whose light touch sent it ahead to Restovich. Restovich’s right-footed strike from just outside the six-yard box found the back of the net to put the Irish in front 1-0.
Looking to make it a two-goal lead in the 68th minute and 69th minutes, Engle and Joseph each recorded another shot, but resulted in back-to-back Miami saves.
In the 75th minute, Joseph delivered a beautiful ball into the box and while Hodsden’s header was on target, it would be Miami goalkeeper Atlee Olofson’s 10th save of the night.
Morgan Roy recorded her first shot of the night in the 84th minute as she fired it from the top of the box, but was saved yet again.
While the Hurricanes would take their only two shots of the night in the closing minute of the match, the Fighting Irish would hold on to take home their final regular season victory.
DOUG AND LISA JONES FAMILY HEAD WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH NATE NORMAN’S TAKE
On the match…
“I’m super proud of the team. Obviously, it’s such an honor to win the ACC regular season title with so many amazing teams in the conference. It’s been an interesting season with a lot of the adversity that we battled through and the resilience that we’ve shown. Early on, we had some players out, but a lot of players stepped up, and I think it only really made us stronger.
Going into the season, we always talked about how we respond to the tough moments and how that really decides how our season goes. Really looking at this, I’m just super, super proud, especially in the context of us getting close last year and not quite getting over the finish line. Being able to do that tonight in a really tough game, I’m so proud of our players and super happy to get the win over a really good Miami team tonight.”

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – It was a dominant showing start to finish for Notre Dame men’s basketball Thursday night in its home opener vs. Mercyhurst. The Fighting Irish (2-0) led the entire way, jumping out to a 25-7 start and never looking back, defeating the Lakers (0-2), 83-56.
“We talked before the game, at halftime, and again after the game, what our standard is and what we are pushing toward every single day. At times we were there. Now we got to get it where we are more consistent. Just proud of these guys for how they played and how they responded,” Glenn & Stacey Murphy Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry said.
The Irish shot over 50 percent from the field each half, finishing 28-of-52 (.538) in the game. They drained 15 three pointers (15-of-32, 46.9 percent) for the first time since Jan. 14, 2023. The Blue & Gold also outrebounded Mercyhurst 32-22, which included limiting them to zero first half offensive rebounds.
Ethan Roberts led in scoring tonight with 18 points, missing just one shot from the field (6-of-7 overall, 3-of-4 from three).
Braeden Shrewsberry poured in 12 of his 17 points in the second half. A half in which he went 4-for-5 from three-point range. He finished with five made triples in the game.
Brady Koehler also posted 17 points tonight, tying his career high. The sophomore also only missed one shot from the field, and went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, as the later marked a career best
Braeden Smith tied his career high of 10 assists to go along with his five points. In fact, Smith assisted on four of the team’s first seven made baskets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Irish fired off a quick 8-0 run, prompting a Mercyhurt timeout at 18:01. Braeden Smith assisted on threes from Ethan Roberts and Brady Koehler, while Braeden Shrewsberry found Logan Duncomb wide open down low for the easy score.
Out of the timeout, Smith assisted on the next three-pointer, this one from Shrewsberry. Moments later, Koehler drained another three, which was followed by five straight points from Roberts.
At the 14:54 media timeout, it was 19-5 in favor of the Blue & Gold. Moments later, Tommy Ahneman added an and-one, followed by a Logan Imes three. At the 13-minute mark, it was 25-7 Irish, with the home squad starting 9-for-11 from the field and 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.
The Irish momentarily stalled with a six-minute scoring drought, but later got back on track thanks to the trio of Ahneman, Shrewsberry and Devin Brown combining for a 7-0 run to keep Notre Dame comfortably ahead at 34-13. Brown’s three-pointer marked his first bucket in an Irish uniform.
Notre Dame ultimately took a 38-23 lead into halftime in which they shot 50.0 percent from the field and 7-of-16 (.438) from deep. They totaled nine assists on 14 made field goals and outrebounded Mercyhurst 23-8.
Braeden Shrewsberry led at the midway point in both points (10) and rebounds (5). The senior was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor. The next highest was Brady Koehler with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting. Braeden Smith led with four assists.
Mercyhurst scored the first four points of the second half, cutting the deficit to 11. Then, Shrewsberry answered with back-to-back threes, stymying the short momentum spurt. Koehler followed on the next possession with a mid-range pull-up, marking an 8-0 run and Lakers timeout.
That scoring spree ballooned to a 17-0 run fueled by the following: a third Shrewsberry triple, a Roberts triple, a Koehler bucket and free throws and finally Anheman free throws.
Ultimately, over a 10-minute stretch from 18:51-8:04, the Irish outscored the Lakers 31-9.
With 7:25 remaining, Koehler was feeling it, draining back-to-back treys to push his game total to 17 points. Shrewsberry followed soon after with his fifth triple of the game, pushing his total to 17 as well, and the team score to 78-43. The Shrewsberry three-pointer capped an 8-for-8 Irish shooting stretch.
From there, it was smooth sailing, as a Jonathan Sanderson three marked ND’s final bucket of the night, bringing us to our final of 83-56.

IU INDY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
INDIANAPOLIS – IU Indy opened its home schedule with a 70-69 win over SIUE, capped by Ariana Williams’ buzzer-beating putback. E’Zaria Adams made the play before it possible with a late steal.
“Really excited that we came away with a win on that one,” said Head Coach Kate Bruce. “A lot of huge plays by several different players on our team down the stretch. I thought Destini [Craig] had a big offensive rebound off a free throw then got fouled. Then obviously E’Zaria Adams making that steal at the end of the game, and Ariana Williams not quitting and running down there and making that layup was huge for us. It wasn’t the prettiest but we found a way, our team found a way and they never gave up, so I’m really proud of them.
IU Indy finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run after SIUE tied the game at 10. Olivia Flynn and Olivia Smith each made two free throws, and Flynn added a putback to help the Jaguars take a 16-10 lead.

The Jaguars answered with 26 points in the fourth as the teams traded baskets through a tense finish. Down five with 44 seconds left, IU Indy chipped away the SIUE lead. The Jags knocked the lead down to one with a free throw from Craig before Adams stole the ball with four seconds left; Williams grabbed the rebound after Adams’ missed layup and tipped it in at the buzzer for the win.

Friday’s match will also be broadcast on ESPN+, with the team of Chris Machado (play-by-play), Nyah Wilson (analyst) and Kayla Douglas (reporter) on the call.
Last Time Out
Indiana State picked up its second consecutive win over an in-state foe Tuesday evening, dispatching of visiting Evansville in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-23) inside ISU Arena.
The Sycamores’ sweep was their first home win of the season, and also gave head coach Ted Kopacz his first home win at the helm of the program. Indiana State also snapped a two-match losing streak to Evansville in the process.
Kira Holland led the Sycamore attack with nine kills and eight digs, while both middle blockers went error-free on the evening as Lily Mueller added nine kills and Ella Scott tacked on seven. Scott added five blocks for the Blue and White, while Macy Lengacher led all players with 13 digs. Hadley Hardersen dished out 31 assists in the win.
Crunch Time
With two weekends left in the regular season, Indiana State still has everything to play for. The Sycamores still have a chance to qualify for the MVC Tournament, though they would need multiple outcomes to go in their favor in order to qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 2021.
Indiana State needs to win each of its last four matches to have a chance at earning the final spot in the tournament field. The Sycamores would also need UIC to lose its last four matches and both Valparaiso and Southern Illinois to go no better than 2-2 over their last four games.
Senior Send-Off
Indiana State will recognize its senior class, consisting of middle blockers Ella Scott and Anna Ptacin, defensive specialist/libero Macy Lengacher and right side Taylor Knuth, following the conclusion of Friday’s match against Valparaiso.
Scott has been a mainstay in the Sycamores’ middle blocker rotation over the last four years, as the Plainfield, Indiana, native ranks in the top 10 in program history in hitting percentage, block assists and total blocks. She was also selected to the 2023 MVC All-Freshman Team.
Lengacher has started at libero for the Sycamores for the majority of the last four years and will finish her career ranked in the top 15 in program history for career digs. The Wakarusa, Indiana, native enters Friday’s match just 11 digs shy of becoming the 12th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs.
Knuth has played a significant role for the Sycamores in the 2026 season, ranking as one of the best in the conference from the service line. The Glenview, Illinois, native tied the program single-match rally scoring era record with seven aces against Drake, and has also notched a pair of matches with double-digit kills.
Ptacin, who is graduating in three years, has appeared in 13 matches in her career with the Sycamores, with most of those coming during the 2024 season. The Roscoe, Illinois, native has averaged just shy of 0.50 blocks per set for her career.
Long Haul
Indiana State is no stranger to going the distance in 2026, with the Sycamores already playing in seven five-set matches this season. The Trees have fared well in those five-setters, going 5-2 in matches that have required the winner-take-all set, with Indiana State’s five five-set wins this season tied with Drake for the most in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Sycamores have become accustomed to comeback wins in five sets this season, with four of their five five-set wins coming after facing a 2-1 deficit. Indiana State is also nearing its 2013 program record for five-set matches in a season during the rally scoring era, when the Trees played in 10 five-setters.
Break Out The Brooms
Indiana State played its most efficient match of the season in the first match of the current homestand, hitting a season-best .363 to sweep Evansville. The Sycamores also held the Purple Aces to a .129 hitting percentage, tied for the lowest by an opponent this season.
The Sycamores’ sweep was their second of the season and the first since the opening weekend of the campaign against Green Bay. It also marked Indiana State’s first sweep in conference play since October 21, 2024, also against Evansville at home.
This Weekend’s Opponents At A Glance
Valparaiso enters the weekend at 12-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Beacons snapped a five-match losing streak in their last match, sweeping Bradley on the road. Ava Helming and Jordyn Gove both average more than three kills per set.

Ajomale nearly willed Indiana State to a win in the second half, scoring 12 in the fourth quarter including a three from the wing to give the Trees a lead at one point, but a late 7-0 run saw the home side sneak past the Sycamores.
First Timers
Indiana State will play a pair of first-time opponents in its next two games, with the Sycamores venturing east to face Seton Hall and Rutgers on the road. The games against the Pirates and Scarlet Knights account for two of the Sycamores’ three games against first-time opponents this season, with Indiana State’s November 17 contest aginst Bellarmine also representing a first-time meeting.
» The Trees have faced at least one first-time opponent in each of the last three seasons (2023-24: Illinois-Springfield and Radford, 2024-25: Iowa State, 2025-26: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods).
Coming Home
The Sycamores’ upcoming road trip to Seton Hall and Rutgers will serve as a homecoming for Indiana State head coach Marc Mitchell, who returns to his home state for the first time at the helm of the Trees.
Mitchell, who is in his third year as the head coach of the Sycamores, is originally from Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is a 2000 graduate of nearby Kean University. His head coaching career at the collegiate level also started in his home state with stints at FDU-Florham from 2009-18 and Saint Peter’s from 2018-22.
Mitchell compiled a 228-145 record as a head coach across his two New Jersey stops, going 187-67 at FDU-Florham and 41-78 at Saint Peter’s. His 2013-14 FDU-Florham team went undefeated and won the NCAA Division III National Championship.

More than half of the Sycamores’ rebounds in the season opener came on the offensive glass, with Indiana State tallying 22 offensive rebounds.
The Sycamores’ 22 offensive rebounds were their most in a game since January 16, 2025 against Southern Illinois, and the Trees took full advantage of the extra opportunities. Indiana State finished with a 22-6 advantage in second chance points in the season opener.
Bench Mob
Indiana State was among the national leaders in bench production last season, and Monday’s season opener indicated no change on that front. After ranking third nationally in bench scoring in the 2025-26 season at 31.8 points per game, the Sycamores’ bench accounted for nearly half of their points against Northern Illinois.
The Sycamore reserves tallied 35 points against Northern Illinois, with Indiana State finishing its opening game with a 35-26 advantage in bench points. Two of the three Trees to finish the season opener in double-figures came off the bench (Natalia Williams 16, Kristen McMillan 13).

While the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to go ahead, USI responded and would tie the game at 17 at the end of the first quarter after back-to-back buckets by Chloe Gannon late in the period.
The Screaming Eagles led 22-19 two and a half minutes into the second quarter, but the Wildcats went on another small run to retake the lead. In the last 20 seconds of the first half, senior forward Amiyah Buchanan scored inside to make it a two-point ballgame at the break, with Kansas State leading 29-27.
Kansas State started the second half with six unanswered points and gradually built a 12-point advantage by the 2:36 mark of the third quarter, 44-32, while USI struggled on the offensive end. Despite a basket by Channah Gannon and a triple from senior guard Sophia Loden to trim the deficit back down to single digits, Kansas State increased its lead to 50-37 at the end of three.
Both teams endured a slow start from the floor to begin the fourth quarter, taking nearly three minutes for either to make a field goal. USI got back to within 10, 53-43, with five and a half minutes to go after consecutive layups from Buchanan and Chloe Gannon. However, a couple of timely shots by Kansas State and another offensive dry spell for USI allowed the Wildcats to close out the game.
The Screaming Eagles return home to Liberty Arena on Sunday for a 3 p.m. tipoff against No. 7 University of Louisville. It will mark the first time USI Women’s Basketball hosts a ranked opponent and the first time a top-10 program visits Liberty Arena.
Tickets for Sunday and all home games at Liberty Arena can be purchased online at USIScreamingEagles.com or the USI Ticket Office.

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S SOCCER
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer advanced past Western Illinois University 1-0 in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Strassweg Field Thursday night after freshman forward Brylee Patterson scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left.
USI Women’s Soccer (4-9-6, 2-2-3 OVC) ousted Western Illinois (3-16-0, 2-5-0 OVC) in the 6-7 matchup, posting the Screaming Eagles’ second straight victory overall, the third OVC Tournament win for USI over the last two seasons, and the first OVC Tournament win on USI’s home field.
The Screaming Eagles generated multiple quality chances throughout the contest, totaling 19 shots and seven on target. 14 of the 19 shots and all seven on goal came in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 86th minute when Patterson scored the game-winner and her first career goal on a shot from distance outside the box, at a tough angle, that sailed over the Leathernecks’ goalkeeper and under the crossbar. Patterson became the fourth USI freshman to score this season.
Patterson was one of four Screaming Eagles to fire three shots on Thursday, joining junior defender and All-OVC Second-Team selection Emma Schut, junior forward and reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Week Josie Pochocki, and freshman midfielder Shea Krakowski. Patterson had two attempts go on goal, matching a team high with junior defender Ava Hess.
USI’s defensive unit was also sharp, limiting Western Illinois to 10 shots and only two on goal. The Leathernecks got off only one shot attempt in the first half. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper and All-OVC Second-Team honoree Merrick Schwalbach made two saves, notching the eighth clean sheet of the season for her and the Screaming Eagles.
With Thursday’s victory, USI Women’s Soccer advances to Sunday’s quarterfinal round of the OVC Tournament for the fourth straight year. The Screaming Eagles will also make a return for a rematch of last season’s quarterfinal victory against Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. The Panthers had a first-round bye and the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament. Kickoff Sunday at Eastern Illinois is scheduled for 1 p.m.
All games of the 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament can be seen with a subscription to ESPN+. Additional coverage for USI can be found on usiscreamingeagles.com, with full tournament coverage on the OVC website at ovcsports.com.

VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER
For the second straight match day, the Valpo soccer team battled its opponent to a scoreless draw, this time doing so on the road at Illinois State Thursday afternoon. The tie left the Beacons one point outside of the six-team MVC Tournament and thus brought the 2026 season to a close.
How It Happened
The two sides combined for just nine shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes as the match went into halftime scoreless.
The first 35 minutes of the second half were nearly as benign, featuring just 10 combined shot attempts, most of them low-level threats.
But it seemed like a switch was flipped once the clock ticked under 10 minutes to play. It started with the equivalent of a super-short corner for the Redbirds at the edge of the box, one which resulted in a close-range effort that Salange Bell (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy [Montclair State]) snuffed out.
That save was followed by two more stops by Bell in fairly quick succession as the junior helped keep the Beacons’ tournament hopes alive.
The field started to flip towards Valpo in the final few minutes, with the Beacons having three quality efforts in the final four minutes. Kiara Desiderio (St. John, Ind./Hanover Central) had a shot in the 87th minute from 15 yards out heading towards the upper-right corner before reigning MVC Goalkeeper of the Year Madi Valenti dove to push it up and over the bar.
Off the ensuing corner kick, Daisy Boardman (Warrington, England/Bridgwater) gained possession just outside the box and let loose a shot which was aimed inside the right-hand post, but Valenti was on the spot to push it away.
Finally, inside the final minute, Martha Goddard (London, England/Alleyns School) won the ball on a pass ahead, leaving her marker behind her as she faced a 1-on-1 with Valenti. With a secondary defender bearing down on her, Goddard shot at the top of the box and attempted to go along the floor to the far post, but Valenti smothered the shot.
Inside the Game
Valpo entered the match knowing it would need a victory and either Belmont or Indiana State to drop points to make the MVC Tournament field. With about four minutes left in the Beacons’ match, Belmont’s contest against Murray State ended in a 2-2 draw, meaning that if any of the last-minute efforts had found the back of the net, Valpo would have made the tournament.
The Beacons and Redbirds have tied in four of their last five meetings, including three 0-0 draws — two of which have come in the last two years.
Illinois State joins Evansville and IU Indy as the teams that Valpo has had three 0-0 draws in program history against.
Two days after being named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Week, Bell made a season-high nine saves to earn her second straight clean sheet and her fourth of the season.
Illinois State held a 16-10 edge in shots and put nine shots on goal to Valpo’s five.
Inside the Season
Valpo ended the year with a 6-8-4 overall record, improving its winning percentage for a second straight season.
The Beacons posted a 2-4-3 record in MVC play, their nine points just one shy of the 10 that put Evansville into the MVC Tournament field.
Goddard moved into a tie for seventh in program history in a single season with her nine goals, while her 19 points are tied for 10th on that chart. The sophomore’s nine goals are second-most of any MVC player at the end of the regular season.
Desiderio racked up 65 shot attempts, seventh-most in a single season in program history.
Thoughts From Coach Marovich
“It was a solid and incredibly hard-fought performance today by the squad. They competed for that last playoff spot until the last second. Kiara had a great strike in the last minutes and Martha with under a minute to play, but the GK made big saves.”
“This group just battles every night and put themselves in positions to get big results, but unfortunately, we fell just a point or two short. I’m so proud of all of them for the way they have continued to honor the tradition of the program, and the tears today are an example of how much this means to all of them — not just the matches but the environment they have every day with each other.”
“We are losing a senior group that has experienced success and absolutely honored the program they came into four years ago. I want to give a giant thank you of gratitude for Daisy, Tatum, Carly, Julianna, Alex, Emma and Eve. They have been great ambassadors for the women’s soccer program and Valparaiso University. They will be missed.”

UINDY FOOTBALL
GAME 10
vs. Southwest Baptist Bearcats (4-5, 3-3 GLVC)
Heroes Day, Senior Day
Saturday // November 7 // 2 p.m.
Coming off an eye-popping 73-34 win versus Quincy last weekend, the UIndy football team is riding a four-game winning streak into this Saturday’s matchup with Southwest Baptist. The team will honor 12 seniors prior to the game, a group looking for win No. 37 in the last four years.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the GLVC title race is coming down to the wire. Both William Jewell and Truman State have only one conference loss to share the top spot in the standings, while both UIndy and Upper Iowa are within striking distance with two losses apiece. All eyes will be on Liberty, Mo., this weekend as Jewell hosts Truman in a battle for first place, while further potential uncertainty may be cleared up in the regular season finale when UIndy travels to Upper Iowa.
If a tie still exists after game 11, co-champions will be named, regardless of how many teams finish with the best record. However, the keys to the conference’s AQ to the playoffs (and likely the league’s only postseason qualifier this season) will be determined via tiebreaker. A two-team tie will need only the head-to-head result to be broken, while a stalemate including more than two teams will require combined head-to-head records of said teams and possibly points allowed in said contests as well.

MARIAN MEN’S SOCCER
Indianapolis, Ind. – The Marian men’s soccer team defeated Grace at home for the second time this season putting up five goals and advancing to the Crossroads League semifinals. Samuel Wehaus and Josh Wesseling led the Knights with a pair of goals each and Rafael Zambrano recorded a pair of assists.
Marian opened up the game with an early corner kick from Rafael Zambrano to Samuel Wehaus who reached the back of the net in the opening minute of play to take a early lead. The Knights continued to attack with a pair of shots from Joshua Pearson and Joao Antonio Rocha who both shot a tad wide off of the goal. Grace then followed up with a pair of shots but came up short to Marian’s defense. After some back and forth action on both sides the Lancers took two more chances but ended up short ending the half with the Knights in the lead 1-0.
The Lancers opened up the second half with a opening minute goal to level the game 1-1. The Knights were quick to counter with a goal from Joshua Wesseling to take back the lead. Wesseling took another shot but ended up short to Grace’s defense. Leonard Assouan quickly fired back with his first goal of the evening to extend the lead to two. Grace got possession of the ball five minutes later taking a shot wide but Wesseling was quick to counter with another goal in the match. Marian continued to strike with a shot from Assouan that was saved by the Lancers goalie. Wehaus gained possession reaching the back of the net once more to record his second goal of the night and increase the lead to four. Each team went back and forth recording a trio of shots with Lazar Milosavljevic recording a pair and Wehaus recording one as well. The Lancers were able to reach the back of the net once more knocking down Marian’s lead to three. Both sides took some final chances but came up just shy of another goal ending the game with a 5-2 win for the Knights.
Josh Wesseling and Sam Wehaus led the Knights each recording three shots and two goals. Leo Assouan also recorded one goal and one assist in the match while Rafael Zambrano recorded a pair of assists. In goal Tristan Edwards earned his 13th win and recorded three saves while Talon Collier came in as relief in the last 10 minutes of play.
Marian is back in action on Saturday, November 4th as they take on No. 15 Bethel in the CLT Semifinal matchup at 7 PM.
