WORLD SERIES

RAYS RALLY FOR 2 IN 12TH INNING, EXTEND WORLD SERIES TO GAME 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pinch hitter Ben Williamson delivered a walk-off single in the 12th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays staved off elimination with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday in Game 4 of the World Series.

The Brewers, who squandered a 12th-inning lead, still are up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 is set for Wednesday in St. Petersburg.

After rookie Cooper Pratt capped his four-hit performance with a homer to lead off the top of the 12th, giving Milwaukee a 3-2 lead, Tampa Bay saved its season with an epic rally in the bottom of the inning.

Junior Caminero reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz to open the 12th inning and chase Antonio Senzatela from the game.

Shane Drohan (0-1) relieved Senzatela and allowed a single to Liam Hicks to put runners on the corners. Jonny DeLuca’s single up the middle plated pinch runner Cedric Mullins to forge a 3-3 tie.

Chandler Simpson’s single loaded the bases before Williamson bounced a single into right field, knocking in pinch runner Nick Fortes to end the game.

Drohan permitted one run on four hits without retiring a batter.

Pratt, who also had an RBI double in the fourth inning, deposited a 2-2 sweeper from Ian Seymour (2-0) over the wall in left-center field in the top of the 12th. Seymour allowed one run on two hits in one inning.

Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio recorded two hits, boosting his total to 10 hits in the first four games of a World Series. The only other player to accomplish that feat was Babe Ruth in 1928.

The Brewers’ David Hamilton atoned for an earlier miscue by homering to lead off the fifth inning, tying the game 2-2.

Simpson ripped an RBI double in the second inning and made a leaping catch at the wall in the ninth for the Rays, who (at least temporarily) prevented the Brewers from capturing their first World Series title.

In the second, DeLuca reached on a fielder’s choice and hustled home on Simpson’s double into the right field corner to open the scoring.

Sal Frelick reached on two-out single and scampered home on Pratt’s double into the left field corner to forge a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning.

Tampa Bay answered in the bottom of the frame. Third baseman Hamilton’s throw toward first base sailed off the mark, allowing Caminero to score from second and giving the Rays a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Hamilton sent a 0-2 fastball from Griffin Jax over the wall in right center field to forge a 2-2 tie. The blast chased Jax from the game.

WORLD SERIES NOTEBOOK: RAYS’ BEN WILLIAMSON FINALLY MAKES HIS MARK

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ben Williamson’s performance for the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series had been worse than modest: 0-for-7.

In the Rays’ Game 3 blowout defeat against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, Williamson had a foul ball bounce back to strike him in the helmet just before he lost a likely extra-base hit on a circus catch by right fielder Sal Frelick.

But there Williamson was as a pinch hitter in the 12th inning on Tuesday with the Rays down 3-0 in the series and 3-2 in the game, having waited in the shadows for about five innings, manager Kevin Cash joked, with his helmet on and ready.

Williamson finally made a World Series memory on Tuesday, chopping a ball through a drawn-up infield in a bases-loaded, no-out situation to give the Rays a 4-3 win that extended the American League champions’ season.

“I had confidence in all of us, all the guys, and I think with Ben, (Milwaukee’s Shane Drohan) is a tough left-hander, really tough on left-handed hitters, and Ben is elite at making contact,” Cash said. “Right there, we’re going to give ourselves the best chance by making contact, and he was ready to go for his pitch. Give Ben credit.”

FEED ME, SEYMOUR: The Rays’ 12th-inning dramatics, set up by an error by third baseman Joey Ortiz to open the frame, allowed reliever Ian Seymour to avoid what would have been an offseason of remorse.

After allowing a go-ahead solo homer to Cooper Pratt in the top of the 12th, the left-hander has surrendered five runs on 12 hits — including four homers — in nine postseason innings. He blew a save in Game 2 of the World Series.

MAY DAY: Brewers starter Dustin May allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in three-plus innings. Thirty of his 39 pitches were strikes.

May left after allowing a leadoff single to Junior Caminero in the fourth inning. Caminero moved to second on a groundout and scored when third baseman David Hamilton fielded a Jonny DeLuca grounder, missed a tag on Caminero going to third, then threw wildly to first base.

VIDEO VICTIMS: Milwaukee unsuccessfully challenged the Caminero play, contending that Hamilton made the tag even as Caminero ran onto the infield grass to avoid him.

In the ninth inning, a Pratt stolen base was overturned by replay when it was ruled that Richie Palacios tagged him on his hand protector.

“We had a couple of things not go our way in terms of calls,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “But I’m not saying they were wrong. I’m just saying we had a couple of things.”

HAMMERIN’ HAMILTON: Rays starter Griffin Jax was removed after allowing a game-tying leadoff homer to Hamilton in the fifth. Hamilton, Milwaukee’s No. 9 hitter, is batting .348 with two homers in the postseason after he hit .245 with four homers in the regular season.

SHUTDOWN: Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby worked a scoreless ninth, a shutout 10th and got one out in the 11th to become the all-time leader in consecutive scoreless innings (18) to open a postseason. He has three saves and a win over his nine appearances this month.

Ashby has not allowed a run in 23 consecutive innings dating back to the regular season.

GLOVE STORY: Rays players readily admitted that their defensive play had not been up to their lofty standard since the World Series began. First baseman Jonathan Aranda and Chandler Simpson, a Gold Glove finalist in left field, had misplays in Game 2 and third baseman Caminero made a costly decision going for a forceout to cue an eight-run outburst in Game 3.

Tampa Bay’s defensive mastery returned in Game 4, particularly in the outfield, with center fielder Jonny DeLuca and Simpson both making sliding catches.

STATE LOVE: Murphy became the Brewers’ manager in 2024, but he didn’t realize until an offseason trek last year how much the team meant to the entire state of Wisconsin.

“We did this tour of stopping at different cities, staying over in Eau Claire, La Crosse, the Dells, Green Bay, Wausau, and we spoke at these theaters and met the fans and spoke,” he recalled. “Twelve hundred people show. I’m like, ‘Hey, is there a movie playing later? What do you guys show up for?’

“But they love the Brewers. We had a riot with it. It was really, really fun. I FaceTimed Sal almost every time, and I’d catch him off guard. He’d be somewhere, coming out of the shower or something, and it would be great. He’d have a towel around him. ‘Where are you at? Hey, a couple people want to say hi to you,’ and I’d turn it around.

“You realize in the state of Wisconsin, a lot of Brewers fans don’t get to come to the games all the time. To me, that’s incredible.”

WAIT CONTINUES: The Brewers, Rays, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners remain the only MLB franchises to have never won a World Series.

WEEK 8 NFL PREVIEW

For the first time since 2002, there are two divisions – the AFC North and NFC North – in which every team has a winning record through Week 7. The four NFC North teams have combined for 19 wins this season, trailing only the 2022 NFC East (20) for the most wins by a division through Week 7 since 2002. This week, there are five matchups between teams each with four-or-more wins this season, the most in Week 8 of a season since 2006 (five).

Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 8:

Minnesota (6-0) at Detroit (4-2) (1 p.m. ET, FOX): The Vikings, the last undefeated team in the NFL this season, can improve to 7-0 for the fifth time in franchise history (1973, 1975, 1998 and 2000). Detroit ranks second in scoring offense (30.7 points per game) while Minnesota leads the NFL in scoring defense (12.3 points per game against) entering Week 8. It will mark the first game in Week 8 or later since 2019 (Baltimore vs. New England in Week 9) between a team averaging 30-or-more points scored per game and a team allowing 13-or-fewer points per game.

In Week 7, the Vikings became the third team in the past 20 seasons (2007-26) to allow 13-or-fewer points and 225-or-fewer yards in three consecutive games within a single season, joining the 2019 San Francisco 49ers (Weeks 5-7) and 2009 New York Jets (Weeks 12-14).

Minnesota can become the fifth team since 2002 to allow 16-or-fewer points in 6 of their first 7 games of a season, joining the 2019 New England Patriots (first seven games), 2005 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (first seven games), 2013 Kansas City Chiefs (six of seven) and 2006 Chicago Bears (six of seven).

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson – set to appear in his 100th career game – has 8,782 career receiving yards, the third-most receiving yards by a player in his first 100 career games in NFL history. Only Julio Jones (9,618 receiving yards) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (9,019) have more.

Detroit quarterback Jared Goff has 1,788 passing yards, 14 touchdown passes and no interceptions entering Week 8. He can become the fourth player with at least 2,000 passing yards before his first interception to begin a season, joining Alex Smith (2,406 passing yards in 2017 with Kansas City), Bernie Kosar (2,040 in 1991 with Cleveland) and Patrick Mahomes (2,027 in 2019 with Kansas City).

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has 5,919 scrimmage yards and 58 scrimmage touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2023 and can become the third player in NFL history with at least 6,000 scrimmage yards and 60 scrimmage touchdowns in his first four career seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Terrell Davis and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Detroit wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has 593 receptions in 89 career games and can become the fastest player in NFL history to 600 career receptions, surpassing Keenan Allen (96 games), Antonio Brown (96) and Cooper Kupp (96).

Cleveland (5-2) at Pittsburgh (5-2) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Cleveland and Pittsburgh enter Week 8 tied for first place in the AFC North. In Week 4, the Browns defeated the Steelers, 27-24, as kicker Andre Szmyt converted the game-winning 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining. Cleveland is one of two teams since 1970 to record a game-winning score in the final four minutes of regulation or in overtime in each of their first five wins of a season, joining the 2016 Detroit Lions.

With a win in Week 8, Cleveland can win each of their first three divisional games in a season for the first time since 1993.

Last week, in Pittsburgh’s Week 7 victory in Paris, quarterback Aaron Rodgers recorded his 540th career regular season touchdown pass and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (539 touchdown passes) for the third-most regular season touchdown passes in NFL history. Only Tom Brady (649 touchdown passes) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Brees (571) have more.

Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt has 120.5 sacks since entering the NFL in 2017 and is one of five players since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, with at least 120 in his first 10 seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Reggie White (145 sacks), Jared Allen (128.5) and DeMarcus Ware (127), as well as Myles Garrett (125.5).

Kansas City (5-1) at Denver (5-2) (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS): In Week 1, the Chiefs defeated Denver, 31-10, as running back Kenneth Walker totaled a career-high 191 scrimmage yards (173 rushing, 18 receiving) and two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving). Walker enters Week 8 ranked second in the NFL in rushing yards (701) and fifth in scrimmage yards (817) this season.

Last week, Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez (15,413 receiving yards) for the most receiving yards by a tight end, including the postseason, in NFL history and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison (1,102 receptions) for the fifth-most regular season receptions in NFL history.

In Week 7, Denver quarterback Bo Nix became the fifth player in NFL history with a 50-yard touchdown pass and a 50-yard touchdown run in the same game, joining Justin Fields (Nov. 13, 2022 with Chicago), Lamar Jackson (Sept. 18, 2022 with Baltimore), Cam Newton (Dec. 9, 2012 with Carolina) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ace Parker (Oct. 9, 1938 with the Brooklyn Dodgers).

Since entering the NFL in 2024, Nix has 29 regular-season wins, third-most among starting quarterbacks, trailing only Sam Darnold (31 wins) and Josh Allen (30).

Chicago (5-2) at Seattle (4-3) (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC): The Seahawks – who lead the NFL in passing defense (144.4 yards per game allowed) and rank sixth in rushing defense (89.4 yards per game allowed) – are the third team since 1990 to allow 150-or-fewer passing yards per game and 90-or-fewer rushing yards per game over their first seven games of a season, joining the 2019 New England Patriots and 1991 Philadelphia Eagles.

Chicago enters Week 8 leading the NFL in rushing offense (154.3 yards per game) and rank third in total offense (390.7 yards per game). Bears running back D’Andre Swift is one of two running backs, along with Baltimore’s Derrick Henry, with at least five rushing touchdowns in each of the past seven seasons.

Seattle wide receiver Jaxon-Smith Njigba leads the NFL with 867 receiving yards and eight touchdown receptions and ranks second with 58 receptions this season. He can become the third player since 1970 to lead or tie for the league-lead in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions through Week 8 of a season, joining Rod Smith (2001 with Denver) and Steve Smith Sr. (2005 with Carolina).

Smith-Njigba can become the sixth player ever with at least 1,000 receiving yards in his first eight games of a season, joining Charlie Hennigan (1,122 with the Houston Oilers in 1961), Pro Football Hall of Famer Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch (1,058 with the Los Angeles Rams in 1951), Wes Chandler (1,032 with Atlanta in 1982), Pro Football Hall of Famer Don Hutson (1,032 with Green Bay in 1942) and Tyreek Hill (1,104 with Miami in 2023).

Baltimore (4-3) at Buffalo (5-1) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): The Bills, who lead the NFL in scoring offense (32.8 points per game) and rank fourth in total offense (387.7 yards per game), can become the first team since the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs to score 24-or-more points and record 340-or-more total yards of offense in each of their first seven games of a season.

In the last meeting between the two clubs – Week 1 of the 2025 season – Buffalo overcame a 15-point deficit in the final 3:56 to defeat Baltimore, 41-40.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen has 4,961 career rushing yards and can become the fifth quarterback all-time with at least 5,000 career rushing yards, joining Lamar Jackson (6,666, entering Week 8), Mike Vick (6,109), Cam Newton (5,628) and Russell Wilson (5,568).

Baltimore running back Derrick Henry, who has 135 career touchdowns, can tie Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk (136 touchdowns) for the fourth-most touchdowns by a running back in NFL history, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (175), LaDainian Tomlinson (162) and Marcus Allen (145).

Additionally, Henry – who has eight scrimmage touchdowns this season – can become the third player in NFL history with at least 10 scrimmage touchdowns in nine consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (10 consecutive seasons from 1986-95) and LaDainian Tomlinson (nine from 2001-09).

COLTS NEWS

COLTS TRADE ALL-PRO GUARD QUENTON NELSON TO SEAHAWKS, AP SOURCE SAYS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have traded All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person requested anonymity because the deal had not been announced by either team and said the Colts would receive a third-round draft pick and a fifth-round pick in return for the eight-time Pro Bowler.

Nelson can become a free agent in March, but had not said much about what his future plans were because he was focused on finishing this season strong.

It’s the second major move in two weeks for Indy (2-5), which has lost three straight and 12 of its past 14 overall. The Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard last week following a loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans at home. Assistant general manager Ed Dodds has replaced Ballard for now.

Nelson was the No. 6 overall pick in 2018 and joined linebacker Darius Leonard on the All-Pro team, making the duo the first rookie teammates to earn All-Pro honors since former Chicago Bears teammates Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus in 1965. Nelson was an All-Pro from 2018 to 2020.

The Colts visit Jacksonville (4-2) on Sunday while the Seahawks (4-3) host Chicago (5-2) on Monday night.

COLTS ACQUIRE 2027 FOURTH-ROUND PICK IN EXCHANGE FOR DT DEFOREST BUCKNER IN TRADE WITH SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The Colts on Tuesday acquired a 2027 fourth-round NFL Draft pick from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

Buckner returns to the 49ers, who selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Colts acquired Buckner in exchange for a first-round pick in 2020.

Over his seven seasons with the Colts, Buckner totaled 47 sacks, 122 quarterback hits, 63 tackles for a loss, six forced fumbles and 20 passes batted down in 95 games (90 starts). He earned first-team AP All-Pro honors in 2020 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2023.

The 32-year-old Buckner returned from season-ending neck surgery on New Year’s Eve 2025 to notch four sacks over the first seven games of the 2026 season.

After trading Buckner and guard Quenton Nelson on Tuesday, the Colts now have the following selections in the next two NFL Drafts:

2027

Second round

Third round

Third round (from Seattle)

Fourth round

Fourth round (from San Francisco)

Fifth round

COLTS SIGN CB KENNETH HARRIS TO 53-MAN ROSTER FROM PRACTICE SQUAD; PLACE CB CAM TAYLOR-BRITT ON INJURED RESERVE; SIGN 2 PLAYERS TO PRACTICE SQUAD

The Indianapolis Colts today signed cornerback Kenneth Harris to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and placed cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt on the Injured Reserve list. The team also signed cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew and Natrone Brooks to the practice squad.

Harris, 6-0, 192 pounds, was elevated in Week 7 at Minnesota and Week 1 vs. Baltimore. He has registered three tackles (one solo) and one pass defensed this season. Harris was signed to the team’s practice squad on August 31, 2026. He participated in training camp with the Colts after originally signing with the team as a free agent on August 26, 2026. Harris previously participated in the New England Patriots’ 2026 offseason program and training camp. He was originally signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 8, 2026. Collegiately, Harris played in 59 career games (29 starts) at Oklahoma State (2023-25) and Arkansas State (2020-22) and compiled 113 tackles (92 solo), 61.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, 28 passes defensed and three interceptions.

Taylor-Britt, 5-11, 200 pounds, has played in six games this season and has registered seven tackles (three solo), 1.0 tackle for loss, 1.0 sack, two passes defensed and six special teams stops. He has appeared in 53 career games (40 starts) in his time with the Colts (2026) and Cincinnati Bengals (2022-25) and has compiled 210 tackles (154 solo), 5.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 40 passes defensed, seven interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), two forced fumbles and six special teams stops. Taylor-Britt was signed by Indianapolis as an unrestricted free agent on March 17, 2026.

Bartholomew, 6-0, 200 pounds, spent time on the Tennessee Titans practice squad earlier this season. He has played in six career games in his time with the Titans (2026), Green Bay Packers (2025), Minnesota Vikings (2025), Carolina Panthers (2024-25) and New York Jets (2024). Bartholomew has totaled five tackles (four solo), 2.0 tackles for loss, two passes defensed and two special teams stops. He was originally signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2024, out of Georgia Southern.

Brooks, 5-11, 176 pounds, spent time on the practice squads of the Vikings and Detroit Lions earlier this season. He played in 26 games (one start) in two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2024-25) and totaled six tackles (three solo), three passes defensed and nine special teams stops. Brooks was originally signed by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent on May 15, 2023, out of Southern Mississippi. His first name is pronounced nay-tron.

INDIANA PACERS

After splitting a back-to-back set in Brooklyn and Milwaukee, the Pacers (2-2) return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse to host the new-look Philadelphia 76ers (3-1) on Wednesday night.

The Pacers rolled to a 136-109 win on Sunday against the Nets, but then squandered an 11-point halftime lead in Monday’s 110-102 loss to the Bucks. Injuries had an impact on the latter result, as starting center Ivica Zubac missed Monday’s game after spraining his ankle in the first quarter on Sunday in Brooklyn and starting guard Andrew Nembhard did not play in Milwaukee due to a sore neck. Indiana is also without reserves T.J. McConnell, Ben Sheppard, and Johnny Furphy, while starting wing Aaron Nesmith is on a minutes restriction as he works his way back from a hamstring strain.

While the injury list is longer than the Pacers would like, the good news is that Tyrese Haliburton is healthy and looking like his old self. Haliburton missed 16 months after tearing his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, but has been outstanding to start the season, averaging 21.8 points and 9.5 assists over his first four games while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range.

All-Star forward Pascal Siakam remains as consistent as ever. Siakam has scored 20 or more points in every game so far this season and is averaging a team-leading 23.5 points per game to go along with 7.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

The Sixers made the biggest moves of the offseason, acquiring five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown in a trade with Boston and then signing 41-year-old LeBron James in free agency. Those two join a loaded starting lineup that also includes former MVP Joel Embiid, two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, and 2025-26 first-team All-Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe.

Philadelphia got off to a strong start to the season, winning its first three games before falling to Detroit on Sunday on the second night of a back-to-back. So far, Maxey has been the team’s top scoring option, averaging 28.8 points per game. Embiid contributes 21.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, Brown averages 20.8 points and 5.8 boards, and James — playing his league-record 24th season — contributes 16.3 points and 7 boards. So far, the group is sharing the ball well, with all four All-Stars averaging between 4.8 and 5.7 assists per game.

Probable Starters

Pacers: G – Tyrese Haliburton, G – Kelly Oubre Jr., F – Aaron Nesmith, F – Pascal Siakam, C – Jay Huff

76ers: G – Tyrese Maxey, G – VJ Edgecombe, F – Jaylen Brown, F – LeBron James, C – Joel Embiid

Injury Report

Pacers: Aaron Nesmith – probable (left hamstring strain), Andrew Nembhard – questionable (neck stiffness/soreness), Johnny Furphy – out (right ACL repair/surgery), T.J. McConnell – out (right hamstring strain), Ben Sheppard – out (left meniscus tear), Ivica Zubac – out (left ankle sprain)

76ers: TBA

Last Meeting

April 10, 2026: Playing their penultimate game of the 2025-26 season, the shorthanded Pacers hung tough with Philadelphia at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, but ultimately fell, 103-91.

Jarace Walker led four Pacers in double figures with 17 points in the loss, going 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Quenton Jackson added 16 points and six assists, while Micah Potter recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Indiana had just 10 active players.

Sixers All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 32 points, while former Pacer Paul George added 21.

Noteworthy

The Pacers will face the Sixers three times in their first 19 games this season. Indiana visits Philadelphia on Nov. 15 and then hosts the 76ers for an NBA Cup game on Nov. 27. The two teams will meet for a fourth and final time in Philadelphia on Jan. 19.

Philadelphia swept the season series with Indiana 4-0 last season. In the two previous seasons, the Pacers went 5-2 against the Sixers.

Haliburton and Maxey were both first-round picks in the 2020 NBA Draft and the first two players in NBA history named Tyrese. Both are now multi-time All-Stars and two other players named Tyrese have since made their NBA debuts: Tyrese Martin and Tyrese Proctor.

INDY FUEL

FISHERS- The Fuel will start the week on Wednesday night in Cincinnati before two games against other divisional opponents over the weekend. Indy goes into the game on Wednesday night on a two-game win streak with back-to-back wins against the Komets and the Cyclones last week.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27

Indy will face the Cyclones for the third time this season. They have split the early season series, each winning a game a piece on Indy’s home ice. The Cyclones have outshot the Fuel in both games and are the only team to do so thus far.

Sahil Panwar, former Fuel forward, already has four points against Indy this season in those two games. He will be one to watch as the long season series continues.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30

On Friday night, the Fuel will head to Bloomington to take on the Bison for the first time since the lone preseason game they played against each other. This will be the first meeting between these two teams for new Fuel head coach Jesse Messier, who is the former assistant coach for the Bison.

The Bison head into this game on a three-game win streak. They have started the season undefeated with wins over Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne, and Cincinnati. Michael Milne leads the team in scoring with two goals and four assists in three games.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1

The Fuel will host the Fort Wayne Komets for the first time on Sunday afternoon after a 6-2 victory over them last weekend. Their lone win of the season so far came in their first game against the Toledo Walleye, where they took a 6-3 win over the fish.

They lost 4-1 to Bloomington before falling to the Fuel at their home opener. They will see Toledo again along with Wheeling before Sunday against Indy.

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL

INDIANA BEGINS 2026-27 TRYING TO TURN THE CORNER BY ENDING 3-YEAR NCAA TOURNAMENT DROUGHT

Indiana (18-14, 9-11 Big Ten)

Coach Darian DeVries begins his second season hopeful of making the NCAA Tournament after his last two teams — one at Indiana, one at West Virginia — were among the last schools left out. While tournament expansion could help end the drought, a few more wins wouldn’t hurt. The Hoosiers have undergone yet another major roster overhaul — nothing new in today’s college basketball landscape — and it’s unclear how long it will take to get everyone in sync.

Players to watch

Fourth-year guard Markus Burton was Indiana’s 2023 Mr. Basketball Award winner and an all-ACC choice at Notre Dame who played 10 games last season because of an ankle injury. In three seasons with the Irish he had 1,315 points, 232 rebounds, 259 assists, and 123 steals. … The Hoosiers also added 7-foot forward Aiden Sherrell, a McDonald’s All-American who had 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds in 34 starts last season at Alabama. … Third-year guard Darren Harris is in line for more action this year than the 9.6 minutes he had last year at Duke.

Departures and arrivals

DeVries lost his top three scorers — Lamar Wilkerson (20.9 points), his son Tucker (13.7 points) and Tayton Conerway (9.5 points). … The Hoosiers still could have No. 4 scorer Sam Alexis. He’s fighting for another year of eligibility in court. … Other newcomers include 6-6 shooting guard Jaeden Mustaf, a two-year starter at Georgia Tech; guard Bryce Lindsay, a 2024-25 all-Sun Belt pick at James Madison who scored 12.1 points for Villanova last season and 7-2 center Samet Yigitoglu, who averaged 10.7 points and 7.9 rebounds as a starter at SMU in 2025-26.

Top games

The Hoosiers played two exhibition games in Indianapolis, at Butler and against North Carolina in Gainbridge Fieldhouse before opening Nov. 2 against Eastern Illinois. Indiana has two more games in Indy — Nov. 9 against Syracuse, the schools that met for the 1987 NCAA title, and Nov. 20 against Kentucky at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indiana also faces Arkansas in New York on Nov. 17 and hosts Missouri on Dec. 18. Defending national champion Michigan visits Assembly Hall on Jan. 16 and they face rival Purdue twice — Feb. 16 in Bloomington and March 5 in West Lafayette.

Facts and figures

Indiana didn’t just add from the transfer portal. Their incoming high school class — forwards Trevor Manhertz and Vaughn Karvala, guard Prince Alexander Moody and center Clemens Sokolov — was ranked No. 21. … Indiana has only two NCAA Tournament appearances in nine years. … Kentucky and Indiana meet for the second straight year after agreeing to a four-game deal. The next two games will be played on the respective campuses rather than neutral courts.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS

The reigning NAIA champion Marian University will be the Hoosiers only public exhibition for the 2026-27 season. The Knights went 35-2 last year and return 10 players from last season. Highlighting this season’s roster will be a pair of preseason All-Crossroads League first team selections in senior guard Taylor Dobule and junior guard Madisyn Bailey.

NOTES

Fourth year guard Lenée Beaumont had a breakout year for the Hoosiers in 2025-26 and returns as the team’s best scorer from a year ago with her 13.3 points per game. She started all 32 games and shot 43.1 percent from the floor. The Lisle, Ill. native scored in double figures 25 times and averaged 4.8 rebounds along with 3.0 assists per game while shooting a 86.3 percent clip at the free throw line.

Third year forward Zania Socka-Nguemen is back at full strength after missing a majority of the 2025-26 season with a lower leg injury. In her 11 appearances, Socka-Nguemen averaged 11.8 points and 8.7 rebounds and finished with a team-high six double-doubles.

Second year forward Maya Makalusky returns as a staple in IU’s lineup after earning a place on the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2025-26. The Fishers, Ind. native averaged 9.7 points  in her rookie season while draining 64 3-pointers, which was third-most by a freshman in school history. Makalusky started in 22 games and scored in double figures 14 times.

The Hoosiers brought in four transfers in the offseason with the addition of fifth year guard Kenzie Hare (Iowa State), fifth year forward Alisa Williams (Iowa State), fourth year forward Malia Samuels (USC) and fourth year forward Jess Petrie (Nebraska). All four played at Power 4 institutions last season and all advanced to the NCAA Tournament with their respective teams. The quartet brings in a combined 378 games played and 139 career games started.

Indiana brought in its first-ever Top 10 recruiting class in 2026. IU is the eighth-best class in the nation, according to ESPN, and third-best in the Big Ten. Forward Addy Nyemchek became the first high school recruit to play in the McDonald’s All-American game and is rated No. 25 in the class. Guard GiGi Battle (No. 29) was a Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School All-American and guard Ashlinn James (No. 66) was Kentucky Ms. Basketball in 2026.

UP NEXT

The regular season begins on Tuesday, Nov. 3 as the Hoosiers host FGCU to begin a seven-game homestand.

PURDUE MEN’S BASKETBALL

MATT PAINTER AGREES TO ANOTHER CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH PURDUE THAT RUNS THROUGH 2030-31

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue coach Matt Painter will begin the college basketball season with a contract extension, the university announced Tuesday.

The 56-year-old Painter agreed to a deal that will keep him through 2030-31. School officials announced Painter will receive a pay raise and be eligible for enhanced performance bonuses but that other financial details will not be available until the deal is approved by the board of trustees.

Painter has 501 wins in 21 seasons with the Boilermakers, and he needs 12 more to pass Gene Keady as the school’s career leader. Painter played for Keady and spent one season on Keady’s staff as the head coach-in-waiting before replacing him in 2005-06.

Painter has won five Big Ten Coach of the Year Awards, has been selected The Associated Press Big Ten Coach of the Year twice, was named National Association of Basketball Coaches national coach of the year in 2018-19 and last year received the John Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

“Purdue is a very special place for me, and it’s an honor to continue to be the head basketball coach at my alma mater,” Painter said. “I’m humbled the Purdue administration continues to put their faith in me to lead this program and am excited to continue to elevate our program with class and strive to reach all of our goals on and off the court.”

Painter and Keady have been Purdue’s only coaches since 1980-81, and Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is the only current Big Ten coach with a longer tenure than Painter.

Purdue’s 117 wins since 2022-23 rank fourth nationally, and the Boilermakers also have the fourth-longest active streak of reaching consecutive NCAA Tournaments, 11.

Only seven coaches have won more Big Ten regular-season titles than Painter’s five. The Boilermakers also have won three conference tournament crowns, including last year under Painter.

And, with two-time national player of the year Zach Edey leading the way in 2023-24, Purdue reached its first Final Four since 1979-80. Purdue lost to UConn in the national championship game three years ago, matching the 1968-69 team for the best NCAA Tournament finish in school history.

The Boilermakers begin a new era of basketball as they try to replace three four-year starters — NCAA career assists leader Braden Smith; Fletcher Loyer, the school’s career leader in 3-pointers made; and all-conference forward Trey Kaufmann-Renn, who will play for Kansas after winning a court battle to get an extra year of eligibility.

The Boilermakers open the season Monday night against No. 15 Gonzaga in Las Vegas.

“Under Matt Painter’s leadership, Purdue men’s basketball has established itself as one of the nation’s premier programs through its success on the court and commitment to excellence in all areas,” athletic director Tommy McClelland said in a statement. “The culture Matt has built, grounded in a shared pursuit of excellence, is reflected in the program’s 106-game sellout streak at Mackey Arena and the tremendous support Boilermaker fans and donors provide at away and neutral-site games across the country. We are proud to have Matt leading our program now and into the future.”

#######################################################

PURDUE BEGINS ITS NEW ERA WITH A FAMILIAR GOAL — WINNING ANOTHER BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Purdue (30-7, 11-7 Big Ten)

The Boilermakers are entering a new era under longtime coach Matt Painter. Three four-year starters — guards Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer and forward Trey Kaufman-Renn — have departed. Kaufman-Renn is fighting a legal battle to regain one year of eligibility but he’s already said he won’t be with Purdue. Painter has overcome major turnovers before, and the Boilermakers rarely lose ground. They should still have enough talent, big men and perimeter shooters to be a Big Ten title contender.

Players to watch

Despite the losses of the big three, the Boilermakers have experienced guards C.J. Cox, Gicarri Harris and Omer Meyer, all of whom have logged major minutes since arriving at Purdue. … Daniel Jacobsen, the 7-foot-4 center, showed promise during his second season with the Boilermakers. He needs to take another step this season. … Caden Pierce started 89 games at Princeton before redshirting last year. He’s the only significant transfer this year.

Departures and arrivals

Painter is selective when it comes to the transfer portal. Pierce, the younger brother of Indianapolis Colts receiver Alec Pierce, and Jack Lusk are the only ones on the roster. Lusk spent one season at Millikin before following his father, assistant coach Paul Lusk, to Purdue two years ago. … The program’s next big project could be Sinan Huan, a first-year, 7-1 center from China. … What exactly will Purdue be missing with the graduations? Smith set the NCAA’s career record for assists (1,103). Loyer is the school’s career leader in 3-pointers (309), and Kaufman-Renn is 17th in school history in scoring (1,655) and 11th all-time in rebounds (762).

Top games

After an exhibition game at national runner-up UConn, they open the season against Gonzaga on Nov. 2. The Boilermakers also face Oklahoma on a neutral court Nov 26, play at Iowa State on Dec. 5, host Tennessee on Dec. 11 and face Colorado in Indianapolis on Dec. 19. They open Big Ten play at home Dec. 1 against Iowa, play at Michigan on Jan. 8 and face rival Indiana on the road Feb. 16 while hosting the Hoosiers on March 5.

Facts and figures

Pierce played a key role on Princeton’s Sweet 16 team in 2022-23. The next season, he was chosen the Ivy League Player of the Year with averages of 16.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. … Painter’s 501 career wins at Purdue rank third all-time in Big Ten history. He needs 12 wins to pass his coach, Gene Keady. Only Tom Izzo (764) and the late Bob Knight (659) have more wins with conference teams. … Center Oscar Cluff (10.6 points) also has departed, leaving Cox as the top returning scorer at 8.5 points per game.

No. 4-ranked UConn defeated Purdue 76-53 on Tuesday night in Hartford, in Purdue’s final exhibition tuneup before the regular season starts next Monday.

Purdue lost its fourth straight exhibition game, spanning four seasons, against high-major opponents (Arkansas in Oct. 2023, Creigton in Oct. 2024, Kentucky in Oct. 2025, UConn in Oct. 2026). All four games have been on the road and against teams ranked in the top 15 of the AP poll.

Purdue entered the UConn game, making 30-of-73 (.411) from long range in the two exhibition games, but went just 2-of-25 (.080) against the Huskies.

C.J. Cox scored 18 points and in the three exhibition games, averaged 15.5 points per game on 18-of-31 (.581) shooting in 24.0 minutes per game.

Daniel Jacobsen added seven points and four blocked shots and blocked 10 shots in the three exhibition games in just 54 minutes.

HARTFORD, Conn. – No. 4 Uconn scored 41 second-half points to hand Purdue a 76-53 loss at PeoplesBank Arena on Tuesday night.

The Huskies completed their perfect three-win preseason slate with the win over the Boilers, who fell to 2-1 this year and 73-11 overall in all-time exhibitions.

The Boilermakers had 13 turnovers to the Huskies’ 11, while also being outrebounded 40-34. Purdue shot just 2-of-25 (0.08) from 3-point range, 32.8 percent from the field and went 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

C.J. Cox led Purdue with 18 points and seven rebounds, while going 7-of-14 from the field. Daniel Jacobsen added seven points, three rebounds and an assist (3-of-7 FGs) while Jack Benter added eight bench points (3-of-4 FGs).

The Boilermakers will head to Las Vegas on Monday, Nov. 2, to take on No. 15 Gonzaga in their season opener.

PURDUE MEN’S GOLF

LAHAINA, Hawai’i – The Purdue men’s golf team overcome a slow start, surging up the leaderboard in the final two rounds to place seventh at the Ka’Anapali Classic in Lahaina, Hawai’i.

The Boilermakers shot a 1-under par 851 to finish seventh behind six other top-40 teams at the Royal Ka’Anapali Golf Course. Georgia won the event at 23-under par, and was followed by Clemson (-22), TCU (-16), Oklahoma (-6), Kansas (-4) and Colorado (-3).

The Boilermakers recorded rounds of 299-278-274, after a wind-swept first day. Purdue’s total of 16-under par over the last two rounds was fourth among all teams in the field.

Jenson Forrester led the Boilermakers with his third top-five finish of the season at 7-under par 206 (69-69-68). Forrester finished tied for fifth, four shots off the lead.

Micah Sheffer had an outstanding final two rounds, finishing tied for 37th at 3-over par 216. Sheffer recorded rounds of 80-71-65 – a career-best, 18-hole score in his final round.

Will Harvey also tied for 37th at 3-over par 216 with rounds of 77-68-71.

Sam Easterbrook was tied for 70th at 8-over par 221 (76-70-75). Andre Zhu was tied for 77th at 10-over par 223 (77-76-70). Playing as an individual, Supapon Amornchaichan finished tied for 47th at 4-over par 217 (79-68-70).

The tournament concludes the fall season for the Boilermakers.

NOTRE DAME MEN’S BASKETBALL

MICAH SHREWSBERRY GETS A FRESH START WITH 10 NEW PLAYERS ON THIS SEASON’S ROSTER AT NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame (13-18, 4-14 ACC)

Nobody should be more ecstatic about a new season than coach Micah Shrewsberry. After losing his top player to injury in Game 10, enduring two five-game losing streaks, missing the ACC tourney, apologizing for charging after an official and tearing an Achilles tendon, Shrewsberry was due for a fresh start. He has 10 new players, more experience and a first-of-its-kind Nov. 1 opener against Villanova in Rome. Shrewsberry hopes a trip to the famed Trevi Fountain provides some better luck. If Pope Leo XIV’s beloved White Sox can rebound from three straight 100-loss seasons to make baseball’s playoffs, maybe he can help the Fighting Irish, too.

Players to watch

Basketball fans in the Hoosier State will see another 6-foot senior point guard named Braeden Smith — just not the NCAA’s career assists leader. This one is a transfer from Gonzaga who may help Notre Dame solve its turnover woes. … Logan Duncomb, a 6-foot-10 center, returns to the state where he started his college career (Indiana). He could be the program’s top post player in years. … Shrewsberry also has two sons on the team. Braeden is the team’s top returning scorer at 11.9 points who has topped the 1,000-point mark. Nick was a 2026 Indiana prep All-Star.

Departures and arrivals

In addition to Smith and Duncomb, the transfer portal also landed all-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team guard Devin Brown, who started 27 games last season at Davidson and Ethan Roberts, a 6-5 swingman, who scored 16.9 and earned second team all-Ivy League honors last season on Penn’s NCAA Tourney team. … The top freshmen are the younger Shrewsberry and prep school teammates Jonathan Sanderson, a 6-3 guard, and Gan-Erdene Solongo, a 7-foot center. … The Irish lost their top three scorers — guards Markus Burton (18.5 points), Jalen Haralson (16.2 points) and Cole Certa (12.8) — in the transfer portal.

Top games

The Irish host Mercyhurst in their home opener Nov. 5 and open ACC play by hosting Stanford on Dec. 30. In between, they play three games in Las Vegas, opening against Florida. Notre Dame also has a school record nine consecutive home games, a stretch that includes games Dec. 2 against Vanderbilt, Dec. 5 against TCU and Dec. 12 against Ohio State. They visit Duke on Jan. 23 and host North Carolina on Feb. 2.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team fell one possession shy of a road win in exhibition play at Austin Peay on Tuesday night (Oct. 27), falling to the Govs 96-94. Gus Etchison paced four Jaguars in double-digits with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and Reece Hagy added 16 points and five boards.

“We’re disappointed. We want to win every time we go out there,” head coach Ben Howlett said. “We’ve got some things to clean up and work on between now and next week when the regular season begins.

“We didn’t shoot it very well tonight and made some careless turnovers, but we’ll continue to work and get better.”

Neither team led by more than seven points in a game that featured 17 ties and 20 lead changes. Austin Peay led 93-88 with 2:14 to play before the Jaguars scored layups on their next three possessions, the last of which came from Etchison to tie the game at 94 all with 41 seconds remaining.

Marshall drew a foul in close on Austin Peay’s offensive trip with 10 seconds to play, resulting in splitting a pair of free throws. The Jags had the ball on the sideline with a chance to get a go-ahead attempt, but were unsuccessful in getting a shot attempt on two different inbounds opportunities. Etchison tried to find Kameron Tinsley in the corner on the initial play and after then stumbled trying to receive a pass on a second sideline out of bounds opportunity.

In true October college basketball fashion, the teams combined on 38 turnovers and 53 personal fouls, leading to 60 free throw attempts. APSU went 28-of-39 (71.8 percent) from the line while the Jaguars were 14-of-21 (66.7 percent).

Precious Idiaru, Peyton Heiss and Manasseh Stackhouse all fouled out for the Jaguars, combining to score nine points among them. Stackhouse’s lone bucket was a critical layup with just more than a minute remaining in regulation.

Tinsley closed with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds and Idiaru and Billy Smith tallied five points apiece. Austin Peay, which won 22 games a season ago, shot 50 percent overall and 43 percent from three in the win.

The Jaguars will open the regular season on Monday (Nov. 2) when they host Miami-Middletown at 11:00 a.m. inside the brand new James T. Morris Arena on the IU Indy campus. Monday’s game will be the annual NCAA ‘Readers Become Leaders’ game with more than 3,500 third-graders from across Central Indiana expected to be in attendance.

There will be a radio broadcast on WMUN 92.5 FM /1340 AM with Mick Tidrow and David Eha on the call but no video stream. Links to the broadcast and tickets can be found above and on the schedule page.

Ball State is entering its first season under the direction of head coach Chris Capko, who was hired in March after most recently being the associate head coach at SMU. The Cardinals fell 87-55 at Purdue back on Sunday, Oct. 18 in the first exhibition game of the preseason.

Purdue Fort Wayne went 17-15 (11-9 Horizon League) last season in head coach Jon Coffman’s 12th leading the program. The Mastodons fell 92-62 to Purdue at home last Thursday night in their first exhibition matchup.

The contest is a rematch of sorts as Purdue Fort Wayne beat Ball State 84-70 in an exhibition in Fort Wayne on Oct. 27, 2025. The Mastodons were picked eighth a few weeks ago in the 12-team Horizon League preseason poll.

Ball State begins the regular season on Monday, Nov. 2 at Georgia Southern.

CAPKO’S CARDINALS: Chris Capko was named the 21st head coach in Ball State men’s basketball history back in March after most recently serving as associate head coach on Andy Enfield’s staff at SMU.

The Florida native spent a total of 12 seasons on Enfield’s staffs at USC and SMU including the most recent five as the associate head coach.

EDGE ON EXPERIENCE: The Ball State men’s basketball roster features 12 players in their junior year or later along with freshmen Kamden McGilveary and Kai McGrew.

A total of seven Cardinals are in at least their fourth year of college.

FINE WITH COMING HOME: Junior guard Aaron Fine attended many Ball State basketball games growing up in Muncie before moving to Noblesville for high school.

Fine’s first contest in a Ball State uniform was also be a homecoming of sorts, as he was at Purdue for his first two collegiate seasons.

I KNOW YOU: Capko has known UMass transfer guard K’Jei Parker his entire life.

Both Florida natives, Capko is good friends with Parker’s dad Kevis and even held K’Jei when he was a baby.

BACK FOR MORE: Senior Mason Jones has played the third-most minutes at a MAC school among players on 2026-27 season rosters entering the campaign.

The 2,192 career minutes trail only Ohio forward Javan Simmons and UMass guard/forward Jayden Ndijigue. Simmons transferred from Toledo after two seasons, and UMass has only been in the MAC for one season, so Jones has played the most minutes at the same MAC school among players on active rosters.

MEETING THE MASTODONS: Ball State’s exhibition with Purdue Fort Wayne will be the second in as many years, as the Cardinals played the Mastodons on Oct. 27, 2025 in Fort Wayne.

The most recent meeting between Ball State and Purdue Fort Wayne in Muncie was on Dec. 31, 2007 when the Cardinals won 69-62 in the New Year’s Eve contest.

In-State Rivalries: Wednesday’s exhibition vs Purdue Fort Wayne is the second of five scheduled contests this season against teams from the state of Indiana for the Cardinals.

MORE MACTION: The Mid-American Conference slate jumped from 18 to 22 games in advance of the 2026-27 season.

The MAC is at 12 teams after Northern Illinois left for the Horizon League, and each team will play a true double round robin with home and away games against every other team.

CANADA CONNECTION: Sean Blake, Babatunde Durodola and assistant coach Manny Dosanjh are all from the Toronto area.

Blake and Durodola will be Ball State’s first Canadian players since Ben Hendriks (2019-25). Both Blake and Hendriks have the same hometown of Mississauga.

Some Notre Dame Notes

In the Mastodons’ 72-69 win at Notre Dame last season, there were only four Mastodons that scored. DeAndre Craig Jr. was one of them. That the first time in the Division I era of the program that saw only four Mastodons score. It was also the Mastodons’s first win over an ACC foe and fourth against a major conference team (Indiana – 2016, 2017; DePaul – 2023).

A Lot To Live Up To

Purdue Fort Wayne had the leading scorer in the Horizon League in each of the last two seasons. Corey Hadnot II averaged 20.4 points per game last season and Jalen Jackson averaged 19.2 points per game in 2024-25.

Red Coat

In May 2025, head coach Jon Coffman was selected as a Red Coat recipient from the Mad Anthonys Foundation. Each year the Red Coat is given to an individual that has made a positive impact on the region and the state of Indiana. A few of the previous honorees include: Keith Busse, Chuck Surack, Brad Stevens, Bob Chase, Arnie Ball, Shelley Long, Matt Painter, Brian Kelly, Joe Tiller, Bob Knight and John Wooden. The Red Coat Gala began in 1958.

Konchar The Hall of Famer

Former Mastodon John Konchar (2014-19) was inducted into the Mastodon Hall of Fame on January 31, 2026. Konchar, who played eight years in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz, finished his collegiate career with the Mastodons as the first student-athlete in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists and 200 steals. He currently plays with Olympiacos B.C. in Athens, Greece.

Last Time Out

Purdue Fort Wayne hosted Purdue in an exhibition contest in front of 10,141 fans, the second-most in program history.

Next Time Up

The ‘Dons will open the regular season with a trip to Pittsburgh for a game at Duquesne on November 3 at 7 p.m. The Mastodons will return home for a game against Albion on November 7.

EVANSVILLE MEN’S SOCCER

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Fueled by a goal inside the game’s final five minutes, the University of Evansville men’s soccer team slipped past Lipscomb, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind.

UE recorded seven shots on the evening with seven different Aces getting involved in the action. Between the posts, senior Hugo Amo made a pair of saves as the Spaniard eclipsed 1,300 minutes in goal for the Aces this season.

The opening half featured much of the possession in the midfield as the Aces and Bisons struggled to mount attacks early on. Through the game’s opening 45 minutes, the two sides combined to record just four shots with the Aces recording three in the first half. Neither team put a shot on frame, but Evansville’s best opportunity came in the 39th minute as senior Kyle Kimberling crossed a ball into the box that freshman Christian Nyatanga rose up and headed, sending it just over the crossbar.

Coming out of the half, it was clear both sides turned up the intensity of their attacks. It was Evansville who struck first, doing so in the 48th minute. Sophomore Ben Zec dispossessed a Bisons defender of the ball just at the edge of the box and quickly dribbled into the box, crossing it in front of goal and finding a streaking Ace in fellow sophomore Chase Ricker who clipped the ball into the back of the net. The Aces joy would not last long as the Bisons answered less than one minute later after a ball crossed into the box deflected and popped up to Jorge Morjob who volleyed it home to tie the match.

An exciting final stanza saw both sides create further chances to take the lead, but it was Evansville who capitalized on their chance late in the match. In the 86th minute, UE earned a corner kick and sophomore Devin Shepherd whipped in a cross that found a soaring Lionel Williams who smashed a header past the keeper and earned what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Aces.

Evansville returns to Missouri Valley Conference play with a road contest at Bradley in Peoria, Illinois at 6 PM on Friday.

EVANSVILLE VOLLEYBALL

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State hit .363 while holding the University of Evansville volleyball team to a .129 tally to pick up a 3-0 win on Tuesday at ISU Arena.

Savannah Gogel and Wren Jones led the Purple Aces with six kills while Lyla Fisher had five. Kendall Agler paced the team with seven digs while Carsyn Kelley had 20 assists. Kira Holland and Lily Mueller had nine kills apiece to lead the Sycamores.

Set 1 – Indiana State 25, UE 16

Indiana State set the tone early taking a 5-1 lead out of the gate. McKenzie Laubach ended the stretch with a kill, however, the Sycamores continued to roll pushing the lead to 11-4. From there, they cruised to a 25-16 decision.

Set 2 – Indiana State 25, UE 17

Things were much closer early in the second set as Carsyn Kelley’s kill gave UE a 2-1 edge. Another Laubach kill, coupled with a pair of ISU errors, set Evansville up with a 6-4 lead. The Sycamores Rallied back to go up 13-9 before the Aces battled back within two (15-13). From there, Indiana State would pull away to take a 25-17 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3 – Indiana State 25, UE 23

Following six early ties, ISU gained an 8-6 lead and pushed the advantage to 13-9. UE kept things close, making it a 2-point game at 15-13 on a Gogel kill. The Sycamores looked to have a grasp on the set taking a 24-20 lead, but UE had a final rally as kills from Gogel and Jones along with a Ryan Scheu ace made it a 24-23 game. Unfortunately, the Sycamores rebounded to score the final point and clinch the match.
