BASEBALL: WORLD SERIES
BREWERS SURVIVE HARROWING 9TH TO EDGE RAYS IN WORLD SERIES OPENER
MILWAUKEE — Brewers closer Trevor Megill wasn’t perfect, but he was good enough to give Milwaukee a one-game advantage in the World Series.
Hard-throwing ace Jacob Misiorowski allowed one run over five gritty innings and Megill stranded the tying run at third base to preserve the Brewers’ 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night in the opening game of the World Series.
Milwaukee, whose only other World Series appearance was a seven-game loss in 1982, scored two runs in the first inning off Nick Martinez and added a run in the seventh on Jackson Chourio’s RBI single to go up 3-1.
The Rays scored one run in the ninth off Megill, who entered to start the inning and conceded consecutive one-out singles to Jonathan Aranda and Chandler Simpson. Pinch runner Jorge Mateo and Simpson executed a double steal, and Junior Caminero walked to load the bases.
Liam Hicks appeared to bounce into a game-ending double play, but a video review showed that shortstop Cooper Pratt was pulled off the bag at second on the throw by second baseman Brice Turang.
Hicks was out on the fielder’s choice as Mateo scored to make it 3-2, leaving runners on second and third. Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca for his fifth postseason save in five opportunities.
“A lot of times those plays stand during the year, but I’m sure now they have every angle, and they took their time and got it right.” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of the review. “Megill kept his composure. We talk about it all the time. When there’s a challenge, do not walk off the mound. Kept his composure, and that was the biggest at-bat of the game.”
Misiorowski (1-0), whose 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts each led the majors during the regular season, allowed one run on four hits in five innings. He fanned three and walked one in a 78-pitch outing.
Misiorowski set the tone by throwing a 103.5 mph fastball to open the game, the fastest pitch in World Series history.
“I thought Miz was great tonight,” Murphy said. “What we’re used to seeing in the regular season was Miz just mow through people and have two strikeouts an inning. That’s unrealistic. This is the best team in the American League. They proved that during the regular season and proved that in the postseason so far. One of the ways they do that is to make contact better than anybody in baseball.”
Afterward, the 24-year-old Milwaukee ace was trying to process his first World Series appearance.
“I still don’t know how I felt. I feel like I’m still trying to take everything in and understand what happened,” Misiorowski said. “Obviously went out and did my best and did enough for the team to get a win. That’s all I can ask for.”
After Misiorowski’s exit, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby combined for three scoreless innings, striking out five.
“We came up a little bit short, but there’s some benefit maybe from a loss,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “We saw Ashby. We saw Uribe. We saw Megill. I’d like to think that’s going to help us moving forward a little bit.”
The Brewers posted two quick runs against Martinez (1-1), who got the start when ace Drew Rasmussen was pushed back to Game 2 for an extra day’s rest.
Chourio singled on the first pitch and scored on Christian Yelich’s one-out triple off DeLuca’s glove on a diving catch attempt in right-center. William Contreras followed with an RBI single to left.
The Rays got a run back in the fourth. Aranda drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third when center fielder Garrett Mitchell misplayed Caminero’s 112.7 mph drive into a double. He scored on Hicks’ groundout.
The Brewers made it 3-1 in the seventh. Steven Matz walked Pratt, who advanced on a groundout and scored on Chourio’s two-out single down the right field line against Kevin Kelly.
Martinez allowed two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out five and walking none.

NFL GAME CAPSULES
WEEK 7 NFL CAPSULES
Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) vs. New Orleans Saints (2-4) in Saint-Denis, France
Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Steelers -3; Total: 44.5
Series Rewind: The Saints won three of the last four clashes to take a 9-8 lead in the series. The Steelers scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 20-10 victory in the most recent meeting on Nov. 13, 2022, in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are 1-1 and the Saints are 2-1 in international games heading into the first NFL regular-season game in Paris. With two touchdown passes, Pittsburgh’s Aaron Rodgers can surpass Drew Brees (186) for the second-most games with multiple TD passes in NFL history (including the playoffs). Only Tom Brady (233) has more. Rodgers and New Orleans counterpart Tyler Shough enter Week 7 tied for fourth in the NFL with 12 TD passes. Steelers star T.J. Watt only has one sack in his last four games but anchors a defense that has allowed opponents to reach the red zone 10 times — fewest in the NFL. Both of New Orleans’ wins have come away from home. In last week’s road win against the Giants, Saints veteran Alvin Kamara became the sixth player in league history to reach 5,000 rushing and 5,000 receiving yards. Wideout Chris Olave is on pace for his fourth 1,000-yard season in five years and edge rusher Chase Young (5.5 sacks) is on track for his second straight season with double-digit sacks.NFL season analysis
Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) at Baltimore Ravens (4-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel: Bengals -1.5; Total: 48.5
Series Rewind: Baltimore has won five of the past six meetings despite the teams splitting the pair last season. The Ravens blanked the Bengals 24-0 in Cincinnati in the second matchup. In the second meeting in 2024, Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase caught 11 passes for 264 yards and matched his career best of three touchdowns but host Baltimore won 35-34.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could return to the field after missing the past two games with a left ankle injury. He’s moving in the right direction after being limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Jackson always thrives against the Bengals and holds an 11-2 starting mark against Cincinnati. The two-time NFL MVP has passed for 24 touchdowns against six interceptions against the Bengals. Baltimore split two contests with Tyler “Snoop” Huntley at quarterback, which includes last week’s 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Star running back Derrick Henry lost a big fumble in the fourth quarter that set up Cleveland for its lone touchdown. Henry ranks fourth in the NFL with 534 rushing yards. Cincinnati is coming off a bye and quarterback Joe Burrow said the Bengals are treating this matchup as a big game. Burrow has stayed injury-free so far this season while hitting a league-best 71.4% of his passes for 1,361 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Tee Higgins has a team-best 423 yards and his 27 receptions for tied for the team leadership with Chase (289 yards). Chase and tight end Mike Gesecki share the team lead of four touchdown receptions. One intriguing aspect to the matchup is whether Baltimore pass rusher Trey Hendrickson can sack Burrow. Hendrickson made the Pro Bowl four times during his five seasons with Cincinnati before signing a four-year, $112 million deal with Baltimore as a free agent in the offseason. Hendrickson had 61 sacks and 12 forced fumbles in 72 games with the Bengals and was the runner-up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2024. He owns two sacks in four games for the Ravens.
San Francisco 49ers (6-0) at Atlanta Falcons (2-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: 49ers -2.5; Total: 49.5
Series Rewind: The 49ers came out on top 20-10 in their home matchup against the Falcons last season. They have won two of the last three meetings with the Falcons — all of which have been decided by 10-plus points — and lead the all-time series 49-33-1.
San Francisco is 6-0 for the fourth time in franchise history and off to its best start since winning its first eight games of the 2019 season. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been a big part of that success. His 14 passing touchdowns are tied with Kirk Cousins and Trevor Lawrence for most in the NFL, while his QBR of 83.0 is best in the league. However, for the 49ers’ first trip away from the West Coast since Week 1, he could have to operate without three of his top receivers with Mike Evans (Achilles) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring) questionable and Christian Kirk (calf) still on injured reserve. They’ll face an uneven Falcons team that has sandwiched two-game losing streaks on both sides of a two-game winning streak and wants to avoid an 0-3 homestand. Regardless of who’s available at receiver for San Francisco, Atlanta’s pass defense, which ranks 28th in the league allowing 252.0 yards per game, will be challenged this week. The 49ers, though, will be tasked with stopping Falcons star Bijan Robinson, who ranks second in the league with 641 rushing yards.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) at Carolina Panthers (3-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Panthers -2.5; Total: 44.5
Series Rewind: Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is 6-3, including postseason, against the Panthers.
It’s a matchup of first and worst in the NFC South on Sunday, and Tampa Bay is putting on the glove in Charlotte. That’s one glove on the injured right hand of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who returns to the lineup for the Buccaneers after missing the past three games with a thumb injury. The Panthers know this foe well. Mayfield previously played for Carolina, while Panthers coach Dave Canales served as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator during the quarterback’s first season with the Bucs in 2023. Regardless of who has taken the snaps for the Buccaneers, running back Bucky Irving has been dependable. He has rushed for 452 yards and scored three total touchdowns, though he missed Wednesday’s practice due to illness. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young will make his 50th career NFL start. Reducing penalties has become a priority for Carolina after the Panthers struggled with discipline in their latest victory over Philadelphia. Tampa Bay has relied on a defense that ranks fourth in the NFL, allowing 299.5 yards per game.
New York Giants (3-2-1) at Houston Texans (2-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Texans -10.5; Total: 43.5
Series Rewind: Like the Winter Olympics, the Giants and Texans meet every four years. The Giants lost their first matchup with the Texans in 2002, but they have won the five since.
J.J. McCarthy gets the start after he replaced Jameis Winston with 11:25 left in the Giants’ loss to the Saints last week and promptly threw an interception. From there, he led three straight scoring drives and finished the game with 243 passing yards in limited time. Injuries have affected McCarthy’s development to date. He missed his rookie season after knee surgery in his first preseason and battled an ankle injury last September, but started 10 games in 2025. He’s 6-4 as a starter with a four-game winning streak entering Sunday and says he’s now more prepared to be a starter. The Texans are still searching for the same bite they had as a defense last season. Ryans has owned defensive playcalling the past two games and the Titans won both, but getting to the quarterback and setting the tone with a physical secondary are not the evident calling cards they were in 2025. Blending personnel has been a factor, too. Safety Jalen Pitre “is still week-to-week with his shoulder injury” according to Ryans but “getting better.” Houston’s offense has been humming. C.J. Stroud gets another receiver back in the lineup this week when Tank Dell returns for his first game since Dec. 2024.
Miami Dolphins (0-5) at New York Jets (2-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Jets -4.5; Total: 39.5
Series Rewind: The Dolphins have won six of the past seven meetings with the Jets and swept the season series in 2025.
The winless Miami Dolphins are trying to establish an identity under first-year coach Jeff Hafley, while the New York Jets hope to get healthy in time to salvage their season. The Jets could get starting running back Breece Hall back on the field. A right quadriceps injury has sidelined him since Week 3. The Jets are going for their first AFC East win in their first division game at home. New York’s defense could have an edge against the Dolphins’ passing game, which ranks second-worst in the NFL in yards (153.6 ypg) and tied for last in QBR (68.4). The Jets have allowed the league’s fourth-fewest passing yards (185.0 per game). The Jets will have to contend with Miami’s physical rushing attack, which has remained effective despite the loss of starter De’Von Achane in Week 3. Led by Ollie Gordon II’s 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, the Dolphins rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns in their 31-24 home loss to Cincinnati on Oct. 11. On the other side, Miami’s defense has allowed 3.7 yards per carry. That’s the eighth-lowest average in the NFL.
Cleveland Browns (4-2) at Tennessee Titans (1-5)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Browns -1.5; Total: 37.5
Series Rewind: Tennessee snapped a seven-game losing streak last season with a 31-29 road victory over the Browns in Week 14. Tony Pollard rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns to cut Cleveland’s lead in the all-time series to 37-32.
Cleveland, which got a win in Week 2 at Tampa Bay, goes for another road victory as it meets a Titans team coming off its first win. Despite throwing for just 164 yards against Baltimore and being held without a touchdown pass for the first time this season, quarterback Deshaun Watson sparked the Browns to a game-winning drive that set up Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal as time expired. The Browns won 13-10 while playing without running backs Quinshon Judkins (ankle) and Dylan Sampson (knee). The Titans edged the host Indianapolis Colts 26-20 to stop a seven-game losing streak dating to last season. Titans quarterback Cam Ward, the top overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, was 11-for-22 passing for 102 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ward has thrown a pick in four straight games and knows he has been inconsistent, especially when it comes to getting wide receiver Calvin Ridley involved in the offense. He has played 178 snaps this season, but has just five catches on 10 targets. Cleveland shares second in the NFL with 19 sacks, one behind league-leading Detroit. Mason Graham leads the Browns with four sacks but has missed the past two games with knee and ankle injuries.
Indianapolis Colts (2-4) at Minnesota Vikings (5-0)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Vikings -6.5; Total: 41.5
Series Rewind: While Indianapolis holds an 18-9-1 lead in the all-time series, the Vikings have won the last two matchups: 21-13 in 2024 and 39-36 in overtime in 2022. This marks the third straight game of this series contested in Minneapolis.
Minnesota has managed to remain unbeaten despite a host of injuries to offensive starters. The Vikings appear set to be much healthier coming out of their bye week, with left tackle Christian Darrisaw, tight end T.J. Hockenson, wideout Jordan Addison and running back Jordan Mason all returning to full practice participation this week. The Vikings’ defense has been lights-out, allowing nearly four fewer points per game than any other team (12.8 ppg) and ranking second in total defense (259.8 yards per game). That could be enough on its own against a Colts team in flux. After Indianapolis helped AFC South foe Tennessee win its first game of the season last week, longtime general manager Chris Ballard was fired on Monday. Daniel Jones hasn’t carried over the momentum he had in his first season as the team’s starting QB, completing 59.6% of his passes for 1,290 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions in his first six games back from the torn Achilles that ended his promising 2025 season. Indianapolis’ defense ranks 27th in scoring defense (27.3 ppg) and 24th in total defense (351.2 ypg).
Denver Broncos (4-2) at Arizona Cardinals (2-4)
Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET
Fan Duel: Broncos -4.5; Total: 43.5
Series Rewind: In their first meeting, these teams played to a 17-17 tie in 1973 when the Cardinals were based in St. Louis. Since then, Denver has won 10 of 11. The only Arizona win was a 43-13 rout in 2010 when John Skelton quarterbacked the Cardinals and Kyle Orton was the signal-caller for Denver. The Broncos have won the last three by a combined 65 points.
The Broncos’ 17-14 overtime victory over the host Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 15 was the latest data point that Denver has been winning in spite of quarterback Bo Nix. Perhaps Nix’s surgically repaired right ankle bothers him more than he lets on, but he has thrown for less than 200 yards in four of Denver’s six games. He accumulated a season-low 107 yards against Seattle four days after passing for just 123 in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Nix is completing just 60.3% of his throws after completing 63.4% last season and 66.3% as a rookie in 2024. The Broncos rank 26th in scoring offense (19.0 ppg) and 31st in total offense (252.2 ypg). Denver linebacker Alex Singleton leads the NFL with 68 tackles. Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain (ankle) looks like he will return after missing the past two games. The Cardinals edged the host Los Angeles Rams 18-16 last weekend to halt a four-game slide. Chad Ryland kicked a career-best six field goals to account for all the Arizona points, including the winning 43-yarder as time expired. Jacoby Brissett has passed for 1,328 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. The Cardinals have allowed an average of 15 points in their two victories, but surrendered 37.0 points per game during their four-game slide. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love (high ankle sprain) will miss his second straight game. Backup Bam Knight fared well last week with 15 carries for 80 yards and will split the workload with Tyler Allgeier, who had 38 yards on 18 carries against the Rams.
Green Bay Packers (4-2) at Detroit Lions (3-2)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Lions -3, Total: 53.5
Series Rewind: The NFC North rivals will face off for the 194th time this weekend with the Packers holding a 106-78-7 advantage. The series has been one-sided of late with the Lions winning six of the last nine, but Green Bay won both games last season to keep Detroit out of the playoffs.
Detroit finally faces its first divisional opponent of the season while playing host to Green Bay. The Lions rank second to the Buffalo Bills in scoring offense (32.8 points per game) game) as they come off a season-high 45 points in their win over Arizona before their Week 6 bye. Detroit QB Jared Goff has been outstanding with 12 touchdown passes and no interceptions. First-year Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing could have something to prove against Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who he worked under the previous three seasons as OC of the Cardinals. Gannon’s defense has rounded into form after a slow start, entering on a three-game winning streak that has seen the Packers allow a combined 34 points. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love (11 TDs, 4 INTs) has been forced to carry the offense due to the team’s inability to run the ball. The Packers rank a distant last in the league at 59.8 rushing yards per game. That tune could change this week, though, with Josh Jacobs (2,258 yards, 28 TDs last two seasons for Green Bay) back at practice this week. He was removed from the NFL commissioner’s exempt list after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges stemming from a May incident.
Los Angeles Rams (2-4) at Las Vegas Raiders (3-3)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET
FanDuel: Rams -3.5; Total: 48.5
Series Rewind: The Rams have beaten the Raiders four straight times and six of the last seven. One of the victories during the stretch was a 52-0 beatdown in 2014 when the teams met in St. Louis. There were five meetings when both teams called Los Angeles home — and the Raiders won four of those from 1982-94.
The Raiders have lost three consecutive games, yet they still own more victories than the Rams. That’s not a good endorsement of Los Angeles’ Super Bowl aspirations. Last week’s 18-16 loss to the Cardinals saw the Rams lose without allowing a touchdown – and without notching any sacks. Another painful aspect of the setback was losing receiver Davante Adams (hamstring) for 6-10 weeks. Adams was off to a stellar start with 30 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns. That makes the health of Puka Nucua even more crucial. He has already missed two games this season and he injured a calf muscle in Thursday’s practice. He was listed as “questionable” after missing Friday’s practice and is regarded a game-time decision. Nacua has 37 receptions for 417 yards and one touchdown in just four games. Matthew Stafford, the reigning league MVP, leads the NFL with 1,794 passing yards but only three players have more than his six interceptions. Las Vegas has allowed an average of 36 points over its losing streak, which includes last week’s 33-30 loss to the visiting Buffalo Bills. Kirk Cousins passed for 313 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Bills, but the running game managed just 65 yards on 20 attempts. The Raiders rank 30th in the NFL at 79.2 rushing yards per game and second-year back Ashton Jeanty has 313 rushing yards and a lowly 3.2 average per carry. He finally scored his first rushing TD of the year last week. Wideout Tre Tucker caught two touchdown passes and narrowly missed his second 100-yard outing of the season with 97 yards on five receptions. Raiders cornerback Hezekiah Masses is the only rookie among the six players who share the NFL lead with three interceptions.
Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) at Seattle Seahawks (3-3)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Seahawks -2.5; Total: 42.5
Series Rewind: The Seahawks are the reigning champs and the Chiefs have played in five of the past seven Super Bowls, winning three. Kansas City has a 34-19 lead in the series but has not won in Seattle since the 2010 season. Then again, this is just the Chiefs’ second visit since 2010.
Kansas City arrives as the AFC’s last unbeaten team, trying to get to 6-0 for the fourth time in franchise history (2003, 2013 and 2024). Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker, who won Super Bowl LX MVP honors with Seattle last season, leads the NFL with 665 rushing yards. Travis Kelce needs 35 yards to pass Tony Gonzalez (15,413) and set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a tight end, which includes the postseason. Patrick Mahomes is 28-7 against NFC opponents in the regular season. Seahawks wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 717 receiving yards and can become just the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with 100-plus receiving yards in six of his first seven games, joining Adam Thielen (2018), Marvin Harrison (2000) and Michael Irvin (1995). In his last appearance on “Sunday Night Football,” Darnold threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns against Washington in Week 9 last season. A loss would give Seattle its first three-game skid since Weeks 4-6 in head coach Mike Macdonald’s first season in 2024.
Dallas Cowboys (2-4) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-4)
Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET
FanDuel odds: Cowboys -4.5; Total: 44.5
Series Rewind: This is the 135th meeting of the NFC East rivals, including the playoffs. The Cowboys are 8-5 against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football.” Dallas has dropped its last four games and six of its last seven in Philadelphia.
Quarterback Tanner McKee makes his second straight start for the Eagles with Jalen Hurts set to miss the rest of the season due to deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley returns from a hamstring injury and should boost an offense that ranks 30th in the NFL with just 255.5 yards per game. The Eagles have lost four straight games for the first time since Nick Sirianni became the head coach in 2021. The Philadelphia defense has been giving up a ton of yards but has limited opponents to 13 touchdowns on 24 trips to the red zone. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is 10-5 in his career against the Eagles, has thrown a total of four TD passes in the four games since he threw four in a Week 2 win against Washington. Javonte Williams has a rushing touchdown in four straight games. The Cowboys have turned the ball over five times in the last two games after posting only two turnovers in the first four contests.

NBA
NBA ROUNDUP: HAWKS CRUSH HORNETS, SET FRANCHISE MARK FOR LARGEST WIN
Jalen Johnson and reserve Aaron Wiggins each scored 19 points as visiting Atlanta blew out the Charlotte Hornets 128-81 on Friday, the biggest margin of victory in Hawks history.
The 47-point gap topped the old record of 46 set in a 126-80 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Nov 15, 2017. Nickeil Alexander-Walker put up 14 points, CJ McCollum posted 13 points, Dyson Daniels contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and seven steals and Corey Kispert also had 11 points for Atlanta, which won its second straight to start the season.
It was a miserable home opener for the Hornets, who won two nights earlier at Brooklyn to start their campaign. They committed 27 turnovers. Naz Reid scored 17 points for Charlotte and Grayson Allen came off the bench for 11 points. Both players were in their home debuts with the Hornets. Reserve Tidjane Salaun also scored 11 points.
The gap reached 97-62 by the end of the third quarter. The Hornets couldn’t even get it cranked up when the margin was out of hand, needing about 6 1/2 minutes to reach a double-digit total in the fourth quarter.
Celtics 107, Knicks 103
Jayson Tatum scored a game-high 36 points, including nine late in the fourth quarter, as Boston withstood a late comeback bid by visiting New York to escape with a victory.
Tatum finished with nine rebounds and seven assists for the Celtics, who have split their first two games. Paul George and reserve Neemias Queta had 15 points apiece while Derrick White added 12 points.
Karl-Anthony Towns (22 points, 10 rebounds), OG Anunoby (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Josh Hart (10 points, 12 rebounds) all had double-doubles for the reigning NBA champion Knicks, who have lost their first two games.
Bulls 132, Bucks 125
Norman Powell scored 25 points and rookie Caleb Wilson added 21 to help visiting Chicago earn a victory over Milwaukee.

NATHAN MACKINNON’S 4-POINT NIGHT POWERS AVS PAST LIGHTNING
Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists, Mackenzie Blackwood turned away 31 shots, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3 in Denver on Friday night.
Martin Necas had a goal and two assists, Artturi Lehkonen and Devon Toews each collected a goal and an assist, and Nazem Kadri and Fedor Svechkov also scored for Colorado, which snapped a two-game skid.
Jake Guentzel scored twice, Charle-Edouard D’Astous added a goal and an assist, Brayden Point had two assists, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves for Tampa Bay, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Toews gave Colorado the early lead when Necas fed him with a cross-ice pass, and he beat Vasilevskiy with a wrist shot 1:08 after the opening faceoff. Kadri made it 2-0 on the power play at 5:56 of the first period, taking a pass from T.J. Hughes in the slot and scoring with a snap shot.
The Avalanche extended their lead to 3-0 just 24 seconds into the second period when Svechkov’s pass attempt in front of the net deflected off a sprawling Erik Cernak. Svechkov then tapped the puck out of the air and into the net.
The Lightning got on the board during one of their five power-play opportunities in the second period when Guentzel scored on a rebound at 8:13. Lehkonen made it 4-1 at 13:57, converting a centering pass from MacKinnon.
Tampa Bay answered at the end of another power play when Guentzel stuffed home a pass from Point at 19:17 of the second period. Colorado unsuccessfully challenged the play for a missed stoppage, giving the Lightning another power play.
MacKinnon restored Colorado’s three-goal lead at 4:18 of the third period. He took a pass from Lehkonen in the neutral zone, skated in on Vasilevskiy and buried a shot inside the near post.
D’Astous cut the deficit to 5-3 at 15:13. Vasilevskiy came off for an extra attacker with 2:57 remaining, and Necas scored into the empty net 14 seconds later.
Avalanche forward Logan O’Connor made his season debut, recording three shots in nearly 15 minutes of ice time.

JAKE EVANS TALLIES TWICE, ADDS ASSIST AS CANADIENS TOPPLE BLACKHAWKS
Jake Evans produced two goals and an assist and Jacob Fowler stopped 20 shots, lifting the visiting Montreal Canadiens to a 4-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.
Kaiden Guhle added a goal and assist to help Montreal earn its first road victory since opening night. Mike Matheson also scored as the Canadiens improved to 4-1-1 in their past six games.
Connor Bedard scored and Spencer Knight made 24 saves as the Blackhawks fell to 2-3-0 on a seven-game homestand.
Chicago started strong, as Bedard opened the scoring at 4:23 of the first period on a snap shot from just outside the left circle. After a Montreal dump-in glanced off a linesman, Patrick Kane collected the puck and slid it to a streaking Bedard in the neutral zone.
Montreal, playing without captain and top center Nick Suzuki (upper body), struggled to find offensive footing in the early going. The Canadiens needed 3:31 to record their first shot on goal and didn’t register another for another 2 1/2 minutes.
Evans tallied the equalizer at 17:29 of the first period, beating Knight with a wrist shot from in front of the net off a feed from Kirby Dach.
Montreal took the lead on Evans’ short-handed goal at 7:45 of the second period. With the Canadiens pressuring the Blackhawks’ five-forward power play, a Kane shot attempt redirected off Tyler Bertuzzi’s skate and created an odd-man rush for Montreal.
Evans carried the puck down the left side and scored from the circle.
Fowler turned aside Roman Kantserov and Kane on a Chicago rush moments later to preserve a one-goal advantage.
The Canadiens made it 3-1 at 18:26 of the second. Guhle netted his first goal of the season on a wrist shot from the point.
Chicago finished 0-for-5 on the power play compared to 0-for-3 for Montreal. The Blackhawks’ final man advantage of the game lasted just 22 seconds in the third period, as Teuvo Teravainen was whistled for interference moments after Montreal’s Juraj Slafkovsky was penalized for hooking.
Matheson’s empty-net goal at 17:22 accounted for the final margin.

DARREN CLARKE TAKES EARLY LEAD IN SCHWAB CUP PLAYOFF OPENER
A double bogey did not deter Darren Clarke from setting the pace at the Stifel Charity Classic, as the Northern Irishman captured the first-round lead at the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs opener on Friday in St. Louis.
Clarke rattled off nine birdies in his opening round at Norwood Hills Country Club, three of them coming over the last five holes after he doubled the par-4 13th.
At 7-under-par 64, he is one stroke ahead of Australia’s Mark Hensby and two in front of Vaughn Taylor and Tim Petrovic.
“I tend to put a lot of work into my game, as you know, and whenever I don’t see any results I tend to get very, very frustrated,” Clarke said. “Certainly past three weeks have pushed me to the limit.
“But you know the old saying is (the) answer’s in the dirt, what you’ve got to do. I’m not shy with putting the time in. I kept doing it.”
Clarke hit a bunker on the way to reaching the green at No. 13 and then three-putted for his double, but his putting was otherwise sterling.
“I think the last time I was No. 1 in putting was Firestone in 2003,” he cracked.
The 58-year-old with six PGA Tour Champions wins to his credit came into the playoffs 12th in the standings. He’s projected to move up to fifth if he wins the first of three playoff events, while Stewart Cink could maintain a healthy lead. Cink is currently fifth on the leaderboard at 4-under 67, three behind Clarke.
The top 72 players in the regular season qualified for the playoffs, and the top 54 in the standings after this week advance to the Simmons Bank Championship. Hensby sits in 62nd and has an opportunity to rocket up those standings if he continues to play how he played Friday.
However, he revealed after his round that he has booked a trip back to Australia and he doesn’t intend on missing it, even if he advances in the playoffs.
“I think my time’s done out here,” Hensby said after his bogey-free 65. “I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve not really — let’s just say I’ve had enough and I want to spend time at home.”
“Obviously if I win (this tournament), then at the end of the day, next year if I felt like coming out in the summertime, which I won’t be out here but if I did come out, it would be in the summertime,” he went on to add. “But yeah, I’d like to have that choice so to speak, I guess. But in saying that, there’s a long way to go.”

KENSEI HIRATA JOINS CHANDLER BLANCHET ATOP BERMUDA LEADERBOARD
Kensei Hirata of Japan fired a 7-under-par 64 on Friday to join Chandler Blanchet atop the leaderboard halfway through the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in Southampton, Bermuda.
Hirata and Blanchet are tied at 13-under 129 after two rounds at Port Royal Golf Course. Blanchet held the first-round lead and followed his opening 62 with a 67.
They are one stroke ahead of Ireland’s Seamus Power (64), Eric Cole (65), Danny Walker (67) and Canadians Corey Conners (67) and Ben Silverman (67).
Five players are another shot back at 11 under. David Skinns of England had the round of the day with a 63 to join Denny McCarthy (64), Greyson Sigg (64), Austin Smotherman (66) and Ben Kohles (68) in eighth place.
Hirata, 25, is ranked No. 430 in the world and a distant No. 176 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. None of that would matter if he pulled out his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday.
“This is the first time in contention in a while, so I think I’ll feel a lot of emotions on the weekend, but I think those past six wins will help this weekend,” said Hirata, referring to his six titles on the Japan Golf Tour.
Hirata set the tone for his day by sinking a 17-foot birdie putt at the par-4 first hole. He went bogey-free, and two of his seven birdies came at par-3 holes.
“It’s not a long course, first of all, and then you’ve got to hit it to tight spots to the green and I think that suits … my game,” he said.
After holing out for two eagles in the first round, Blanchet had a calmer round on Friday. Yet he finished with a flourish by following a wayward tee shot at No. 18 with a terrific approach out of the rough to inside 6 feet, where he converted the birdie.
“I pulled it a little left, I was trying to hit kind of a hold cut and was hoping it was in the bunker for a flat lie, but covered the bunker and had a pretty uphill, above-the-feet lie and completely blind shot,” Blanchet said. “It was kind of a fun, creative one, which I think you’ve got to be pretty solid at this week with the wind, can’t just take your stock shots, so it was a good way to end it.”
Blanchet (No. 114 in FedEx Cup Fall) and his counterparts are vying to keep their tour cards this fall. The top 100 players in points at the end of the fall series retain full status for 2027.
Power, for instance, is projected to jump from No. 103 to No. 89 if the current standings hold. The 2022 Bermuda Championship winner showed off his course knowledge Friday with a bogey-free round.
“(I) played a full schedule (in 2026), but it was the unknowns and not knowing where I was going to get in and when I was going to get in was the tough part,” Power said. “So for me, trying to get back into that top 100, get yourself back to full status, and then I just feel like you’re in a better more comfortable spot starting off in January. So, like, that’s going to be the big goal.”
Notable names who missed the cut of 5 under par included Canadian Taylor Pendrith (4 under), Camilo Villegas of Colombia (3 under) and China’s Haotong Li (3 under).

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO MISDEMEANOR MARIJUANA POSSESSION CHARGE AGAINST COLTS QB ANTHONY RICHARDSON
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson faces a misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge following a traffic stop earlier this month. The charge was filed Monday.
The affidavit from the Hamilton County prosecutor’s office said a police officer stopped Richardson on Oct. 12 because the car he was driving had an expired registration tag. The license plate on the car also did not match the one listed on the registration.
The officer wrote that when he approached the vehicle, he smelled marijuana.
According to the affidavit, Richardson acknowledged he had been smoking marijuana inside the car because he did not want to smoke it around his children. The officer wrote that Richardson said he had a small amount of marijuana in the car. The officer said he found a “leafy, green material” he believed to be marijuana along with a bag of five marijuana gummies inside a small Mason jar in the car’s glove compartment.
Richardson’s attorney, James Voyles, declined to comment on the case.
“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information,” the Colts said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”
Richardson has not played in a game since Oct. 5, 2025.
The Colts (2-4) selected the former Florida Gators star with the No. 4 overall draft pick in 2023. But after winning the starting job during his first training camp, he has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency.
Richardson appeared in just four games in 2023 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He started a career-high 11 games in 2024 but completed just 47.7% of his passes, the lowest among all NFL starters that season, and threw eight touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He also took himself out of a game that season, later acknowledging he was “tired.”\
In 2025, Daniel Jones beat out Richardson for the starting job in training camp. Richardson wound up throwing just two total passes in two games before suffering a fractured orbital bone near his right eye when a stretching band broke in the locker room before a game. He hasn’t played a snap since and has made two requests to be traded.
This summer Richardson beat out Riley Leonard for the No. 2 job in training camp. But Jones has taken every snap this season since returning from a torn right Achilles tendon he suffered last December.
Earlier this week, the Colts fired longtime general manager Chris Ballard — who was running the team when Richardson was drafted. On Wednesday, Richardson said he was disappointed with the change and that he wanted to prove Ballard was right in drafting him.
“He believed in me enough to have me here, and I’m forever grateful for that,” Richardson said. “I’m trying to do my part and not make him feel like he made the wrong decision. So I’m just trying to keep getting better every week and am waiting on my opportunity.”

INDIANA PACERS
The Pacers were back home in Indiana on Friday as they hosted the Mavericks on opening night in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
A last-second Haliburton lay-in at the third quarter buzzer cut the Mavericks’ lead to 22 heading into the fourth quarter, 98-76, after Dallas led by as many as 37 points in the first half. Indiana cut the lead down to 16 points in the second half, but ultimately fell to the Mavericks, 121-105.
“It was one of the best crowds I’ve ever seen here for a regular season game,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “…But a great crowd doesn’t guarantee anything if you don’t compete the way you need to compete.”
Ivica Zubac and Andrew Nembhard were strong in the first quarter – Nembhard notched 11 points, and Zubac made his presence felt on the glass as he kept plays alive for the sputtering Pacers. Indiana’s defense slipped early as Cooper Flagg notched 12 points in the opening frame, and Dallas shot 67 percent from the field. The Mavericks took a 17-point advantage into the second quarter, 44-27.
The struggles didn’t stop in the second quarter. Dallas went on a 15-0 run in the middle of the period, and the Pacers found themselves trailing by as many as 37 points before halftime. Indiana committed 13 first-half turnovers that led to 22 Mavericks points.
Nembhard and Siakam each scored 11 points in the first half to lead the Pacers, while Kyrie Irving notched 13 points and Flagg recorded a game-high 14 points for Dallas. Flagg exited the game shortly before halftime after an awkward landing following a hard foul by Aaron Nesmith. He did not return in the second half.
The Pacers opened the second half with three quick defensive stops. Haliburton started to find a flow in the two-man game with Zubac, and the Blue and Gold showed signs of life.
Two-way forward Jalen Slawson made critical plays in the third. His activity on the defensive side of the ball drawing fouls and causing chaos for the Mavericks offense helped the Pacers cut the lead down to 22 points with three minutes to play in the quarter.
With nearly five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Slawson poked the ball free as Naji Marshall handled it near halfcourt, tapped it ahead to Haliburton, and Haliburton lofted it to the rim for Obi Toppin. Toppin flushed it down with some force, and the Pacers continued to climb out of the hole, 112-96.
“We just need everybody to be playing like Slawson,” Carlisle said.
The Pacers’ push came slightly too late. They trailed by 13 points with 1:18 to play, but couldn’t overcome a lopsided first half.
Siakam led the Pacers in scoring with 23 points, and Irving led the Mavericks with 24 points. Haliburton recorded 18 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in his return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and Slawson recorded four points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
The Pacers finished with 21 turnovers leading to 31 Mavericks points. They shot an even 50 percent from the field in the second half, but never found a rhythm from deep. Indiana made just 22 percent of its looks from 3-point range.
The Pacers will regroup and travel to Brooklyn where they’ll take on Julius Randle and the Nets on Sunday.
Inside the Numbers
The Pacers outscored the Mavericks 60-54 in the paint.
Indiana lost the rebounding battle, 46-41.
Indiana recorded 27 assists on 39 made field goals.
The Pacers won the second half, 62-44.
You Can Quote Me on That
“It just simply comes down to an attitude and a disposition. And two straight games we haven’t had it the way we need to have it in the first half…It’s not okay, and we all we all own it. You know, every single one of us, start with me, I didn’t have these guys ready to play the way they needed to be ready to play.” – Coach Rick Carlisle on Indiana’s slow start
“It was a great reception. [There was] excitement in the building to start the game and throughout the game. [It] was disappointing that we couldn’t capitalize on it.” – Andrew Nembhard on Gainbridge Fieldhouse’s warm welcome for Tyrese Haliburton
“Definitely not ideal, you know. But I mean, that’s what the NBA is. It’s not all fairy tales and sunshines and rainbows, you know. It’s all part of it, and this is one of those games where you gotta really look at the film, see where you can get better.” – Tyrese Haliburton’s reaction to a loss in his return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse
“There’s obviously a lot of room for us to grow. We’ve got to be better. And I really put it on that first five. We’ve got to be a lot better in that starting group. I thought our second group was amazing. I thought Q[uenton Jackson] and [Jalen] Slaw[son] specifically brought great energy for us, and it was just too little, too late.” – Haliburton’s reaction to two slow starts
“It’s really hard to play in transition when you’re just getting scored on play after play after play…I think the biggest thing is if we’re able to get stops, then we can run a little bit more, play our style of basketball a little bit more.” – Haliburton on how Indiana can get into transition more
“I feel like we can do a better job in our processes. I feel like I’m not a guy who tries to look too much into shooting percentages per se. I look more at the quality of shots we were getting.” – Haliburton on Indiana’s poor shooting night from deep
Stat of the Night
It was a tale of two halves for the Pacers — Indiana allowed 77 points in the first half, and just 44 points in the second half.
Noteworthy
Friday’s matchup with the Mavericks marked Tyrese Haliburton’s first regular season game back in Gainbridge Fieldhouse since sustaining an Achilles injury in the 2025 NBA Finals.
Indiana debuted its statement edition uniforms on Friday – the new threads feature a gold gradient and return the pinstripes first introduced in 1997.
Fever guard Caitlin Clark was in attendance for Friday’s Pacers home opener.

INDY FUEL
FISHERS- The Indy Fuel hosted the Toledo Walleye for the first time this season on Friday night to kick off a Central division three-in-three weekend for them. After opening the scoring, the Fuel fell 5-2 to the Walleye on Friday night.
1ST PERIOD
At 2:57, Indy’s Lachlan Getz took the game’s first penalty for a delay of game. This put Toledo on the power play but the Fuel killed it off.
Toledo earned the game’s next power play with 12:05 to go in the first period, when Jackson DeSouza was called for tripping. That was quickly evened out just five seconds later when Toledo’s Quinn Preston was sent to the other penalty box for tripping.
Immediately after those penalties were killed off, Harrison Israels scored for Indy, putting them up 1-0 with the help of a pair of defensemen, Tommy Budnick and Kyle Aucoin.
At 15:07, Mitchell Hoelscher was called for high sticking, putting the Fuel on another two-minute penalty kill. Gajan stood strong in net until Toledo’s Kaden Bohlsen took a holding penalty with just eight seconds left in Hoelscher’s penalty. Neither team scored.
With just eleven seconds left in the first frame, a fight broke out that earned Jadon Joseph and Toledo’s Campbell Cichosz each two-minute roughing minor penalties. Additionally, Marcus Joughin was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Off the next face-off, Tag Bertuzzi scored for Toledo to tie the game, 1-1 before the period ended.
After one period, the Walleye were outshooting Indy, 10-9.
2ND PERIOD
Just 52 seconds into the second period, Cody Laskosky headed to the penalty box for a delay of game penalty. It was killed off quickly.
Tommy Budnick took a high-sticking double minor penalty at 7:39, putting the Fuel on an extended penalty kill.
Brandon Hawkins scored on the power play quickly, to put the Walleye up 2-1 at 8:15. Budnick remained in the penalty box to serve the additional two minutes before both teams were back to full strength.
With 6:30 to go in the second period, there was more 4-on-4 action as Chase Dafoe and Toledo’s Quinn Preston were each sent to the box for roughing.
Both of those penalties were killed off before the Walleye’s Nick Nardecchia scored to make it 3-1 late in the second frame.
Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game with just 35.1 seconds to go in the second period. This put the Walleye up 4-1.
After two frames, Toledo had outshot Indy, 25-21.
3RD PERIOD
Marcus Crawford took a cross-checking penalty at 1:27 and less than twenty seconds later, he was joined by his teammate Nick Andrews, who sat for a high sticking minor.
At 2:32, Jacob Perreault scored his first Fuel goal with the two-man advantage. His goal was assisted by Matt Petgrave and Kyler Kupka to make it 4-2.
Kupka and Jaden Grant each took a double minor for roughing after a fight broke out after Nardecchia was assessed a cross checking minor. This gave Indy a power play chance in the second half of the third period.
All of those penalties were killed off before Bertuzzi took a high sticking call at 13:49, putting the Fuel back on the power play. Toledo killed it off, however.
Preston scored an empty net goal with just over two minutes to go in regulation after Gajan was pulled from net. This made it 5-2, which is how the game would end. The Fuel outshot the Walleye, 32-31 despite the final score.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Friday (Oct. 23) night’s three concurrent Big Ten men’s soccer matches all ended in a draw, meaning Indiana men’s soccer (12-1-3, 5-1-2 B1G) remains in control of its destiny concerning the conference regular season title as well Big Ten Tournament seeding following a 0-0 result with Northwestern (5-5-4, 2-3-3 B1G) on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
In addition to IU’s tie, Michigan State and Washington – its fellow top three teams – played to a 1-1 result. Further down the table, Michigan spoiled Rutgers run of form with three unanswered goals in a 3-3 draw. So, the teams in contention are content leave a handful of drama for the final week-and-a-half of the regular season.
KEY MOMENTS
• 24′ – Northwestern’s Peter Riesz had the first real chance of the match, his shot from distance banging off the right post.
• 51′ – Indiana came out of the half firing. Oliver Moller-Jensen saw a shot from a corner hover over the goal-line, but the Northwestern keeper reacted just in time to keep it from going over. Moments later, he sent a laser bound for goal, but a Northwestern defender was the only one in the way and did enough to deflect the chance.
• 62′ – Indiana earned a free kick about 28 yards out, and Nick McHenry’s curling attempt forced a diving save at the far post.
• 85′ – The Hoosiers kept piling on chances late in the match, none perhaps closer than a Kinsella header off the bar with five minutes to play. Indiana earned, and created chances with, 14 corner kicks, but a stubborn Northwestern defense didn’t break on the night.
NOTABLES
• With a crowd of 2,821 Friday night, Indiana eclipsed its previous single-season attendance record. INDIANA VOLLEYBALL
COLUMBUS, Ohio – To close out a tough three-match road trip, the Indiana volleyball team (12-6, 5-4 B1G) picked up its second-straight Big Ten sweep with a victory over Ohio State (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) on Friday (Oct. 23) evening at the Covelli Center. The win was IU’s first in Columbus since taking down the Buckeyes in five sets back in 2022.
Despite some late pushes from the home team in the first two sets, IU held on to win all three frames in the victory. A balanced offensive effort, which featured at least six kills from all five primary attackers, was key in finishing off the pesky Ohio State defense. The Hoosiers hit .310 (46-10-116) with 23 combined kills from fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum and second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager.
Second-year middle blocker Victoria Gray was given a start for the first time in October and made the most of her opportunity. The dynamic attacker had nine kills on 15 errorless swings (.600), finishing one kill shy of the fourth double-digit effort in her career. She added three blocks and provided 10.5 total points in Friday’s win. Her counterpart, fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry, added six kills (.333 hitting percentage).
A welcomed sign for head coach in the past few weeks has been the explosion of his team’s net defense. For the third-straight match, IU had double-digit blocks. The Hoosiers finished with 12 in the sweep of the Buckeyes in Columbus. Granberry had a hand in seven of those while Jager and Tatum each had four. Jager led the charge with 16 points (11 kills, 4 blocks, 2 aces).
IU will get a chance to stretch its winning streak to three games in a top-20 battle against No. 16 Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers haven’t beaten Penn State in back-to-back years in program history. First serve is set for 3 p.m. on FS1 with Chris Vosters (PxP) and Camryn Irwin (Color) on the call.
How it Happened
• Fighting to win sets late in road games has been something that IU has done a lot this year. After conceding a pair of seven-point leads in set one, IU scored the final three points in game one to take an early lead in the match. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager had the final two kills.
• The same script nearly came true in set two as well. After a service error from Ohio State, IU led by five points (22-17). The hosts crawled all the way back to tie the set at 23-all, forcing head coach Steve Aird into his final timeout. A pair of late errors from the Buckeyes put points back on the side of the visitors and ensured a 2-0 lead.
• IU went on a late 5-0 run in set three, on the serve of second-year setter Teodora Krickovic, to ensure that set three ended in a timely fashion. The Hoosiers hit .359 (17-3-39) in the final frame, led by six kills from fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum.
Top Hoosier Performers
#13 Tatum, Avry
12 kills, 4 blocks, 3 digs
#24 Jager, Jaidyn
11 kills, 9 digs, 4 blocks, 2 aces
#23 Gray, Victoria
9 kills .600 hitting percentage, 3 blocks
Notes to Know
• For the first time since head coach Steve Aird’s first season in Bloomington, the Hoosiers have recorded double-digit blocks in three-straight Big Ten games. IU picked up a season high 16 blocks at Oregon last week and have followed that up with 10 at Washington and 12 at Ohio State. The last time IU did that in a three-match conference stretch was Oct. 27 – Nov. 3, 2018.
• Second-year middle blocker Victoria Gray had nine kills on 15 errorless swings in Friday’s win over Ohio State while making her first start in the month of October. It’s the third time in her career that she’s had eight-or-more kills and zero errors in a Big Ten match. She also did so against Oregon (8-0-11 – Nov. 14, 2025) and Wisconsin (8-0-14 – Oct. 1, 2026).
• Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager picked up 11 kills on an efficient .313 hitting percentage against the Buckeyes. It’s the 21st time in 29 career Big Ten matches that she’s had double-digit kills. However, it’s the first conference match in her college career where she’s had 10-or-more kills while committing fewer than two attacking errors.
• Over the last two seasons, the Hoosiers have picked up six Big Ten road sweeps. That includes Friday’s effort at Ohio State and last weekend’s victory over No. 20 Washington. IU is 19-10 in conference action since the beginning of 2025 and will look to push that to 20 victories on Sunday against Penn State.
• In the first seven years of Aird’s tenure as the head coach at IU, his teams hit above .300 in a match on 29 occasions. Since the start of last year, the Hoosiers have done that 22 different times. That mark includes IU’s .310 hitting efficiency in the sweep of Ohio State. Nine of those matches have come in Big Ten play.

KEY MOMENTS

The IU defense held Penn State to no shots in the first quarter, despite the Nittany Lions holding possession in IU territory for the majority of the opening minutes.

• As both teams fought back-and-forth to knock the first one in the cage, the first half of the contest ended 0-0.
• The third quarter opened up with a faster pace of play from the Nittany Lions, despite the Hoosier power-play in the first two minutes of the half. Penn State scored the lone goal of the game in the 45th minute off of a penalty corner strike, taking a 1-0 advantage on Indiana.
• In the final-15, IU was unable to answer the Penn State goal, ending the game with a 0-1 loss on the day.

Fourth-year midfielder Inés Garcia Prado and first-year midfielder Gabriela Garayo Aranceta both had one.
• Indiana’s only losses on the season continue to be with ranked opponents.
• As it held Penn State to one shot on goal, Indiana defense ties with Princeton for least number of shots on goal in a game for the Nittany Lions.

• Indiana Field Hockey will face off against No. 1 Maryland in its last home match of the season on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Deborah Tobias Field at Noon.

PURDUE VOLLEYBALL
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In No. 12 Purdue’s (12-6, 5-4 B1G) best serving match of the season, the Boilermakers gritted out a 3-2 victory vs. No. 20 Minnesota (11-6, 5-4 B1G) behind 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12 set scores.
The Boilermakers held the Gophers, who entered the match ranked 11th in the nation for aces, to a season-low three, while serving up nine – a season-high against a power-conference foe. Two Boilermakers set career-highs behind the serve line in the victory, led by Grace Heaney’s four and MaryKate Scheumann’s three. Sienna Foster and Elle Schara each contributed to Purdue’s serving excellence with an ace each.
Ryan McAleer joined the elite 1,000 dig club at Purdue, leading all players with 18 digs to finish the night with 1,001 career digs. The junior added five assists in he outing, and went perfect in receptions for the 10th time this season.
Heaney’s well-rounded performance saw a career-high 26 total points, a feat that included a season-high 19 kills on a .390 clip – just three shy of her career-best – and a season-high-tying six blocks. Not only did she set a new career-best in aces (4), but did so in double-double fashion, rounding out her performance with 11 digs. It was her fourth double-double of the year, including the second in the last five matches. Heaney has hit above .300 for four of the last five matches.
Taylor Anderson dished out her fifth double-double of the season behind 48 assists, 14 digs, with an errorless five kills on 11 attacks (.455%) and three total blocks. With her performance, Anderson moved up in Purdue’s all-time assists leaderboard, surpassing Dary Orin (4,523 from 1985-88) for sixth place in Purdue history behind 4,525 assists. She will have the opportunity to tie fifth place in 43 assists (tying Annette Bauer’s 4,568 assists from 1981-84). Meanwhile, in the match, Anderson guided Purdue to two sets hitting over .300 (Set 2: .303 and Set 3: .353).
The Boilermakers led in Set One, 20-16 before the Gophers went on an 2-8 run to storm back and take the set. Purdue returned the favor in Set 2, closing it out on a 9-2 run to come from behind. Set 3 saw the most dominant performance by either team in a set, with the Boilermakers posting a .353 attack % and 83% sideout in the set, while holding Minnesota to a .189 clip and a 60% sideout. The Gophers held control in the fourth set, but the Boilermakers regrouped in Set 5 and pulled away after Grace Heaney scored the 4-4 equalizer, followed it up with another kill, and didn’t look back.
Five Boilermakers reached double-digit digs (McAller, Heaney, Anderson joined by Scheumann’s 22 and Schara’s 10) – the most players to reach at least 10 digs since October 2024 (vs. Nebraska, 10/11/24). However, Purdue totaled more team digs: 73 vs. Minnesota in 2026 compared to the 64 recorded in 2024.
Purdue’s defense and serving were key for the squad to out-last No. 20 Minnesota, with the Boilermakers holding the 73-66 edge in digs, the 11-10 edge in blocks and 9-3 edge in aces. Minnesota finished with two more kills than Purdue 21-63) and did so on a more efficient attack (.197- .251).
With the win, Purdue owns four victories against ranked opponents, including the third in West Lafayette, and moves to 21-9 in five-set matches over the last five years. Meanwhile, Holloway Gymnasium has seen 32 ranked foes toppled inside its walls over the last 15 years.

PURDUE FOOTBALL
NEW ORLEANS – As one of the nation’s leading passers through the first half of the season, Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne was added to the Manning Award Watch List, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Friday morning (Oct. 23).
The Manning Award is an annual honor recognizing the nation’s top college football quarterback. Created in 2004, the award celebrates the remarkable football legacy of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning while recognizing the outstanding quarterbacks who continue to shape the game at the collegiate level.
Browne has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football, ranking in the Top 20 in passing yards (13th-1,822), passing yards per game (19th-260.3) and completions per game (24th-20.7). Surpassing 300 passing yards in each of the first three contests, Browne joined Jim Everett (1985, twice), Drew Brees (1998, 1999), Kyle Orton (2004), Curtis Painter (2007), David Blough (2018) and Aidan O’Connell (2021, 2022) as the only Purdue quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in three straight games. He began the season by leading Purdue to a win over Indiana State, finishing the contest with 317 passing yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of play. After a 329-yard performance against Wake Forest, Browne threw for a career-high 378 yards and three touchdowns at UCLA.
The Boilermaker quarterback has taken care of the football. He became the first Purdue QB to throw one or fewer INTs through the first six games of a season since at least 1959. Browne surpassed 4,000 passing yards for his career when leading the Boilermakers to a road victory over Illinois, bringing the Cannon Trophy back to West Lafayette. One week later, the Clarkston, Michigan native showcased his ability to run by racking up 81 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground, helping propel Purdue to a dominating 41-13 win over Minnesota.
Browne and the Boilermakers are currently on their bye week, preparing for a five-game stretch to close out the regular season. Purdue returns to the gridiron on Halloween, traveling east to face Penn State. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 4:15 p.m. ET on BTN.

Worobel won on 3-meter by 58 points while posting the sixth-best score (379.00) in team history. Chen’s winning time (1:01.94) in the 100 breaststroke moved her into 15th place in program history.

BALL STATE FIELD HOCKEY
MUNCIE, Ind. — Gigi Ranoldo delivered the game-winner in sudden-death overtime to lift the Ball State field hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Mid-American Conference rival Ohio University Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Ranoldo’s game-winner capped off a brilliant multi-player sequence, with precision assists credited to Jade Vandevoorde and Lauren Lewis. The cohesive play sliced through the Bobcats’ defense to seal the victory on the Cardinals’ home turf.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 4-11 and 2-6 in the MAC while Bobcats drop to 7-7 and 4-4 in conference action.
The match began with an early setback for the Cardinals, as Ohio scored shortly after the opening whistle to take a quick 1-0 lead. However, Ball State quickly regained its composure, equalizing at the 12:11 mark when Pratt, a true freshman, finished a spectacular solo dribble. The remainder of the first half devolved into a defensive battle. The Cardinals stifled the Bobcats’ attack, limiting Ohio to just one penalty corner while drawing six of their own, including back-to-back corners to close out the opening 30 minutes.
Ball State carried that momentum into the second half, dominating both ends of the field. Emily Kate Covert gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead at the 38:41 mark, turning an aggressive solo drive into an unassisted goal. The offense kept pressing, expanding the lead to 3-1 when Jade Vandevoorde capitalized on a penalty corner, assisted by Emalee Harter and Lauren Lewis. Lewis was equally stellar on the defensive end, helping the Cardinals maintain their two-goal cushion heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Despite Ball State’s control, this high-stakes conference clash came down to the wire. Ohio’s Karley DuCoin mounted a fierce comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring two unanswered goals to erase the deficit and knot the score at 3-3, sending the game into a tense overtime period.
The Ball State field hockey team will host Queens on Sunday for its last home contest of the season at noon. Prior to the game, the Cardinals will pay tribute to their seniors.

The Sycamores delivered. A very strong performance last Sunday, battling Illinois State to a 1-1 draw on the road against one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s top programs. Indiana State established itself offensively from the opening minutes, creating quality opportunities and forcing the Redbirds to defend throughout the afternoon. Avery Oergel tested the goalkeeper early, while Meagyn Riffle, Tori Angelo, and Madison Ziebarth helped fuel a strong attacking effort that included multiple chances and three consecutive corner kicks during a dominant first-half stretch.
Indiana State continued to dictate play after halftime and broke through in the 63rd minute when Quinn Urquhart found Madison Ziebarth, who delivered a right-footed strike into the top center of the net to put the Sycamores ahead. The goal rewarded Indiana State’s persistent pressure and marked Ziebarth’s third goal of the season. Although Illinois State found a late equalizer from the penalty spot, the Sycamores continued to create chances through Hailey Morgan, Dasha Tuckova, and Oergel while goalkeeper Sofie Hansen came up with several key saves to preserve the draw. The result highlighted Indiana State’s resilience and ability to compete with the MVC’s top teams, earning a valuable road point against a squad near the top of the conference standings.
The draw extended Indiana State’s unbeaten streak to four matches and kept the Sycamores firmly in the middle of the MVC race. ISU currently sits fourth in the conference standings with nine points and continues to showcase one of the league’s most balanced teams. The Sycamores have consistently combined disciplined defending, strong goalkeeping, and timely offensive production throughout the season, allowing them to remain competitive in every conference match.

The Sycamores have continued to build momentum through the second half of the season and remain within striking distance of the teams above them in the MVC standings. With confidence growing and contributions coming from throughout the roster, ISU heads to Murray looking to secure another important conference result and strengthen its position in the Valley race.

Indiana State got off to a slow start, but the Trees caught fire on Lengacher’s serve midway through. The senior libero put down an ace, while Scott tallied a kill and two blocks during a five-point run as the Trees took a 10-8 lead. Kills from Scott and Ava Robart kept the Sycamores on level pace with the Flames through the middle stages of the set before a late three-point run for the home side turned the tide. Scott and Robart tried to keep the Sycamores alive with late kills, but UIC claimed the opening set by a 25-22 margin.
Set 2 | UIC 25, Indiana State 21
Kills from Robart, Scott and Holland had the Sycamores on the right foot early in the second set, as the Trees and Flames traded runs throughout the first half of the set. Neither team led by more than two until a 5-1 run from the home side saw Indiana State trailing 16-12. Kills from Scott and Robart fueled a 6-1 Sycamore run, with Mueller and Holland also tacking on kills to put the Trees ahead 18-17, but UIC countered with a run of its own. The Flames Closed the set by winning six of the last eight points to win the second 25-21.

Avery Hales and Curry Kendall started the third set with kills, but it was UIC with the first big run of the frame, a 6-2 surge to put the Sycamores in a 10-6 deficit. Three straight kills from Holland halved the deficit, while Robart and Taylor Knuth added kills of their own to make it a one-point set. VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER
Valpo (6-7-2, 2-3-1 MVC)
Saturday, Oct. 24 – at Belmont (2-8-4, 1-5-0 MVC) – 2 p.m.
Next Up in Valpo Soccer: After getting an important three points in the MVC standings last time out, the Valpo soccer team faces another big match Saturday afternoon, as the Beacons hit the road for a trip to Nashville to take on Belmont.
Previously: There was no lack of fireworks this past Sunday at Brown Field, as after visiting Evansville opened the scoring, the Beacons punched back with a five-pack of goals to earn a 5-1 victory over the Purple Aces. Martha Goddard recorded a brace, while Kiara Desiderio, Sofia Raco and Ivy Barba all scored as well.
Looking Ahead: Valpo hosts its regular season home finale Sunday afternoon, Nov. 1 against UIC.
Following the Beacons: Saturday’s match will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available at ValpoAthletics.com. All home matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as part of The Valley on ESPN, while select road fixtures will also have live video available.
Head Coach John Marovich: In his 19th season at the helm of the Valpo program, John Marovich holds a 147-146-55 (.501) record both overall and at Valpo as a head coach. The 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year and the head of the 2022 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year, Marovich is Valpo’s all-time leader in victories.
Series Notes: Valpo owns a 7-4-0 advantage in the all-time series with Belmont and holds a 3-2-0 edge since the Bruins joined the MVC. Last season’s meeting saw the Beacons come away with a 1-0 win thanks to a 12th-minute goal from Molly O’Rear and 10 saves in goal from Kate Sheridan.
Scouting the Opposition: Belmont enters Saturday’s match with a 2-8-4 overall record this year and a 1-5-0 record in MVC play, having dropped each of its last five matches by one goal, including most recently this past Sunday at Drake, 1-0. Reagan Ross leads the Bruins’ attack with five goals and two assists, while in goal, Greta Genie has played all 1260 minutes and owns a 1.57 GAA and a .699 save percentage.
A Look at the Table: With just three match days left in the regular season, every point is vital as teams battle for a spot in the six-team MVC Tournament. If the season were to end today, the Beacons would be in the tournament field as the sixth seed, having moved up in the standings with their win over Evansville last time out. Valpo’s next two matches are against teams which reside lower in the MVC table than it does.
To Score or Not to Score: It’s been pretty simple most of the season for the Beacons – if they score, they’re in good shape for a result. They have scored at least one goal in nine of their 15 matches and own a 6-1-2 record in those matches. On the other hand, they’ve been held scoreless on six occasions, resulting in six of their seven defeats.
Five-Spot: Valpo put five goals in the back of the net last time out against Evansville in the 5-1 win, a season best for the Beacons, besting a pair of four-goal outputs earlier in the year. It was the first time Valpo has had at least three matches in a season with four or more goals since 2006. It is the Beacons’ highest goal total and largest margin of victory since an identical 5-1 score line last season at Western Illinois.
Big Conference Output: The four-goal win matches the program’s largest margin of victory in a conference match since joining the MVC, tying a 4-0 win over UIC in 2022 and a 5-1 win over Indiana State in 2018. Sunday was just the second time in program history Valpo has scored at least five goals in a conference match that ended 11-v-11, joining a 6-2 win at Youngstown State in 2000. The aforementioned 5-1 2018 triumph over Indiana State saw Valpo score four goals after the Sycamores picked up a red card in the 74th minute, while a 6-0 win at Youngstown State in 2015 was aided by a YSU red card in the 44th minute, after which Valpo scored four of its goals.
Martha on the Mark: Sophomore Martha Goddard continued her stellar second season with the Beacons in the win over Evansville with a brace, evening the match in the 23rd minute before adding an insurance tally from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. Goddard has now scored nine goals this season, tied atop the conference leaders and good for 40th nationally. The sophomore cracked Valpo’s single-season top-10 chart with her first goal of the match and now sits in a tie for seventh-most goals in a season in program history, while also moving onto the single-season points chart with 19 points.
Brace Brace Brace: Sunday’s effort from Goddard was her third multi-goal match of the season, as she had previously scored twice in wins over Western Illinois and Oakland. She became the first Valpo player since Kendall Brown in 2005 to record three braces in the same season. That brace against Oakland came alongside a brace from classmate Kiara Desiderio as well, which was the first time since October 2006 Valpo has had two players scored multiple goals.
Ki With the Key Goal: For the fourth time this season, Goddard and Desiderio scored in the match, as Desiderio delivered what would be the match-winning goal against Evansville in the 33rd minute. With seven goals this year, Desiderio is now just one shy of cracking the single-season top-10, while her 14 career goals are just one away from the program’s career top-10 as well.
Seven Up: With her goal on Sunday, Desiderio moved into a tie for third among the conference leaders with her seven goals. Combined with netting seven goals last season, Desiderio became just the fifth player in program history to score seven or more goals in back-to-back seasons, joining Lori Moore, April Cronin, Cory Griffith and Addy Joiner. Of that group, Desiderio is the only one to do so in her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Rock On, Raco: Freshman Sofia Raco found the back of the net for the second time in the last three matches in the win over Evansville with a stellar solo strike in the 51st minute. The rookie is third on the team with eight points, as she also scored the match-winner at Purdue Fort Wayne and converted against UNI as well to go with two assists. Raco has also been seeing much more playing time as of late, as after averaging 51.2 minutes/match in the season’s first six matches, she’s played 70 minutes/match in the last nine.
Off the Mark: Raco wasn’t the only member of Valpo’s freshman class to score against Evansville, as Ivy Barba finished off the win with an 83rd-minute goal for her first collegiate goal. The two freshmen are two of four Valpo players to score their first collegiate goal this season, as senior Daisy Boardman did so at SIUE and sophomore Brylie Walos opened the scoring in the win over Western Illinois.
Some Love for the Helpers: The Beacons tallied four assists in their win over the Purple Aces. Daisy Boardman’s assist on the opener was her second of the season and the fourth of her career. Alyssa Thomas delivered the assist on the eventual match-winner, her team-best fourth helper of the season. She has five assists in her two seasons with the Beacons and six total for her collegiate career. Lily Printz had the primary assist on the final goal of the day, her second of the year, while Brylie Walos’ secondary assist was her third assist of the season and fourth of her career.
Two Goal Scorers: This season is one of just four in program history in which Valpo has had a pair of players score seven or more goals. In 2016, April Cronin tallied eight goals and Cory Griffith seven; the 2009 squad saw both Rachel Hoaglin and Jackie Kondratko find the back of the net seven times; and the 2005 team featured Emily King’s 11 goals and Kendall Brown’s 10 goals.
First-Time Honoree: While Desiderio earned her third career weekly honor from the MVC office with her Player of the Week accolade Sept. 14 after her three-goal, one-assist week, senior Daisy Boardman earned a weekly award for the first time as she was recognized as the MVC Defender of the Week. Boardman played 170 of a possible 180 minutes at right back as the Beacons surrendered just one goal over their final two nonconference wins, while adding her first assist of the season on the attack versus Oakland. Boardman was just the third Valpo player to be honored as Defender of the Week since the Valley broke goalkeeper and defender into two separate weekly awards starting in 2023.
Multiple Weekly Winners: Desiderio and Boardman teamed up to mark the seventh time multiple Valpo players have earned MVC weekly accolades in the same week since Valpo joined the Valley. It was the first such instance since Sept. 26, 2022, when Addy Joiner, Nikki Coryell and Nicole Norfolk swept the player, goalkeeper and defender weekly honors.
Nonconference Success: With wins in each of their final two nonconference fixtures, the Beacons closed out their nonconference slate at .500 with a 4-4-1 record. This is the fifth time in the last seven seasons that Valpo has finished .500 or better in the nonconference schedule.
Preseason Honoree: Coming off a rookie campaign in which she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, sophomore Kiara Desiderio was named to the Preseason All-MVC Team. Desiderio, who became Valpo’s first Freshman of the Year since joining the Valley and was also a Second Team All-MVC choice, kicked off her Beacon career with a team-high seven goals in 2025 — tied for third-most by a freshman in program history. She ranked third in the MVC in goals and fifth in points (15), while also being tied for seventh nationally in goals by a freshman.
Who’s Back: The Beacons return 16 players who saw action on the pitch last season, including eight regular starters. That group accounted for 73.4% of the team’s minutes played by field players in 2025, including six players who played over 1,000 minutes – led by junior Ashley Trippeer, who played 1,397 minutes.
Who’s Gone: Valpo graduated four seniors from last year’s squad and had five other offseason departures. Notably, Second Team All-MVC honoree Molly O’Rear and starting goalkeeper Kate Sheridan were among the group of seniors.
Who’s New: The Beacons welcome nine new players to the program this season: seven true freshmen, one Division I transfer and one Division III transfer.
Good as Goddard: Sophomore forward Martha Goddard returns for her second season in the Brown and Gold after a strong rookie campaign. An MVC All-Freshman Team selection, Goddard tallied three goals and recorded five assists, the latter mark matching the program record for assists by a freshman. She was tied for second in the MVC in assists and tied for fourth on Valpo’s overall single-season chart. Goddard became the first Valpo player to register an assist in three consecutive contests since 2017.
Looking Back at Last Year: Valpo posted a 5-8-4 overall record in 2025 and went 2-4-3 in MVC play, earning eight more points in the Valley than the previous season despite playing one fewer conference game and raising its winning percentage 162 points year-over-year. The Beacons scored 21 goals while surrendering 28 goals, improving their goal differential by 21 goals over 2024. This all came with the vast majority of field player minutes coming from underclassmen, as the 2025 Beacons had 41.2% of their field player minutes played by freshman and 42.3% by sophomores. Kiara Desiderio was named the MVC Freshman of the Year and was joined by Molly O’Rear on the Second Team All-MVC, while Martha Goddard joined Desiderio on the MVC All-Freshman Team.

VALPO SWIMMING
For the second straight dual meet, it was a clean sweep for Valpo in the pool, as the men’s swimming team earned a 152-62 win Friday afternoon at Franklin, while the women’s team prevailed by a 147-67 margin. The Beacons combined to win 17 of the 22 events, including seven sweeps of the top three spots and six other top-two sweeps.
How It Happened
It was a balanced team effort to earn the sweep on Friday, as only two Beacons recorded two individual event wins. On the men’s side, Griffin Schilz (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) swept the distance free events with times of 10:00.10 in the 1000 and 4:45.37 in the 500, while representing the Valpo women, Una Dizdarevic (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) took top honors in both the 50 free (25.07) and the 100 free (54.81).
Dizdarevic also swam the leadoff leg for the women’s winning 400 free relay, joined by Zoey Switzer (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills), Gabi Peterman (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) and Mia Ceballos (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield North) to come home in 3:43.99.
Ceballos had previously taken top honors in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.48 and led off the winning quartet in the 200 medley relay, combining with Ashlynn Taylor (Skiatook, Okla./Bartlesville), Faith Bargwell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Rockford) and Bri Keese (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) to post a winning time of 1:52.27.
Other event winners on the women’s side included Taylor in the 200 breast (2:28.56), Ally Unruh (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) in the 1000 free (11:05.59), Majo Suarez de la Fuente (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM Preparatoria Tec Campus Santa Fe [Bethel]) in the 400 IM (4:52.59) and Millie Hayosh (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) in the 500 free (5:27.64).
Just as on the women’s side, Valpo’s men swept the relay events. The 200 medley relay team of Caleb Smesko (Green, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Ben Mettler (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton), Asa Sadowsky (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port [Green Bay]) and Carmine Fallara (Riverside, Ill./Saint Ignatius) touched the wall first in 1:37.00, while in the 400 free relay, Brian Bosse (Bowling Green, Ky./South Warren), Evan Curran (Golden, Colo./Golden), Kingston Vickers (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and Isaac Dinari (Houston, Texas/Memorial) posted a winning time of 3:13.31.
Other event winners on the men’s side included Curran in the 200 free (1:45.16), Bosse in the 100 free (48.02), Smesko in the 200 back (1:56.99) and Nate Bolinger (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) in the 200 fly (1:59.33).
Next Up
Valpo returns to the pool for the second time in as many days on Saturday with a trip to Purdue for the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate meet. Action begins at 11 a.m. CT.
