RAINOUT FORCES GUARDIANS, RAYS TO PLAY ALCS STRAIGHT THROUGH TO FINISH

CLEVELAND — Major League Baseball officials did not want to postpone Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, but soaking, day-long rain forced their hand.

As a result, the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays will play the rescheduled contest on Saturday night. Cleveland leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Guardians right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 0.00 ERA postseason) takes on Rays right-hander Nick Martinez (0-0, 4.91 ERA postseason). Both were slated to start Friday before the game was called one hour after its scheduled first pitch, but play never began.

“It was obviously a long day to wait to not have a game,” said Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt, who was visibly and audibly perturbed at his post-rainout press conference. “It’s completely out of our control, but this is what happens.

“This is baseball. This is Cleveland. We’re more than used to these kinds of days.”

The postponement will force the teams to play the final four games on consecutive days, if needed, with Game 5 in Cleveland on Sunday. The series would return to St. Petersburg, Fla., for Game 6 and Game 7, if necessary.

Since the Rays play in a domed stadium and there is no rain in the forecast for Northeast Ohio this weekend, the AL crown will be awarded no later than Tuesday. Temperatures for the next two games are expected to be in the low 40s.

“No, I’m not frustrated at all,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. “I have no reason to be frustrated. We did everything just like we would do during the regular season. There was no guarantee there wasn’t another band of rain coming.”

Armstrong, a former Rays reliever, allowed one hit over 1 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 2. He will serve as the opener, with left-hander Joey Cantillo and right-hander Slade Cecconi likely among those to follow.

Armstrong was less fortunate in his previous outing against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning in a no-decision on July 24. He has a 6.14 ERA in 16 total appearances against the Rays (regular season and postseason), all out of the bullpen.

“If you compare both organizations on paper and what they’ve done, it’s a really good battle to have in the ALCS,” Armstrong said. “We’re thankful to be here. So are they. At the end of the day, I hope we come out on top.”

Martinez pitched brilliantly against the Guardians during the 2026 regular season, winning both starts while allowing seven hits and one walk over 13 scoreless innings. He added nine strikeouts as Cleveland posted a .159/.178/.182 slash line against him.

The 36-year-old Miami native pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up two runs against the New York Yankees when he started Game 3 of the AL Division Series. Martinez went 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA in 31 regular-season starts this year, but Cash made him a relief option earlier in the ALCS.

“The first game, I sat in the bullpen and didn’t really like it,” Martinez said, chuckling. “I was in the dugout with cleats on the second game. Whatever the team needs, I’m up for it. That’s got to be my mentality for the rest of the year.”

Martinez is 3-2 with a 4.39 ERA in eight career appearances (four starts) against the Guardians. He has pitched in Cleveland twice (one start), throwing nine scoreless innings with five strikeouts while compiling a 1-0 record.

NFL CAPSULES

Houston Texans (1-4) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) in London

Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Jaguars -2.5. Total: 42.5.

Series Rewind: Houston is 3-1 in the past four meetings, which includes a 36-29 shootout in the most recent game last November.

Winners last week for the first time this season, the Texans cross the pond to take on the Jaguars trying to prevent the AFC South division gap from widening further. DeMeco Ryans was successful in his takeover of defensive playcalling last week with four sacks and consistent pressure on Titans quarterback Cam Ward in a 26-3 beatdown. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud hasn’t thrown an interception this season and adds a familiar weapon outside. Houston acquired wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Stroud’s teammate at Ohio State, in a deal with the Cardinals. The tandem of Nico Collins and Harrison expands the passing game options as Houston deals with a banged-up RB corps. Woody Marks will get the start ahead of David Montgomery. Collins has been a problem for Jacksonville historically with five consecutive games of at least seven receptions and 100 yards. Jacksonville is the first team since the 1969 Cowboys not to allow an opposing running back to rush for more than 40 yards in the first five games of the season. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is 5-3 in international games, including last week’s nail-biter against the Eagles in London.

Chicago Bears (3-2) at Atlanta Falcons (2-3)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Bears -1.5. Total: 51.5.

Series Rewind: The Bears demolished the Falcons, 37-17, in the last game between these teams in 2023. Four different Bears scored TDs in a matchup of quarterbacks Justin Fields (Bears) and Taylor Heinicke (Falcons).

Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. were drafted seven picks apart in the 2023 draft. Health willing, they’ll play on the field again Sunday for the first time since the ’23 college season. That Top 25 matchup ended a 52-42 victory for Penix and the No. 5 Washington Huskies over Williams and No. 24 USC. If either team wants to hit that level this NFL season, protection in the pocket has to become a higher priority. That’s why head coach Ben Johnson said he’s bringing a meat-and-potatoes approach to the offense with a focus on a timeshare at running back and controlling time of possession. The Falcons have less cause for concern this week after Chicago lost top pass rusher Montez Sweat to a two-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. Atlanta never needs an invitation to pound the rock with running back Bijan Robinson. He’s second in the NFL with 732 total yards this season.

Tennessee Titans (0-5) at Indianapolis Colts (2-3)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Colts -6.5. Total: 44.5.

Series Rewind: The Colts have swept the season series from the Titans three consecutive seasons. Tennessee’s last win was in 2022, a 19-10 victory in which the lone touchdown for the Titans was Andrew Adams’ 76-yard interception return.

The Colts ran into plenty of problems last week in Pittsburgh, specifically 188 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns from the Steelers’ Jaylen Warren and 235 passing yards and three TD passes from Aaron Rodgers. That was too much to overcome for an Indianapolis offense looking to regain the form that carried the team to an 8-2 start last year. Indianapolis is scoring 24.8 points per game this season (11th in the NFL) but ranks in the bottom half of the league in rushing, passing, total yards and third-down conversion percentage. Although Jonathan Taylor has rushed for 398 yards and six touchdowns in five games, quarterback Daniel Jones hasn’t been quite as efficient. Losing No. 1 wide receiver Alec Pierce hasn’t helped, but Jones has averaged 5.8 yards per attempt. Tennessee could help Jones find the explosive plays the offense has been missing. The Titans are allowing opponents to complete 74% of their passes, a rate surpassed only by the Miami Dolphins’ 76.6%. Tennessee’s offense has been consistently ineffective, averaging a league-low 11.6 points per game. The Titans suffered a 26-3 home loss to the previously winless Houston Texans last week. Tennessee ranks last in total offense, 31st in passing, 27th in rushing and last in average time of possession. Second-year quarterback Cam Ward is averaging 5.8 yards per attempt, the same as Jones. Since the start of the 2024 season, the Titans have lost 33 of 39 games, with four of the defeats coming against the Colts.

New York Jets (2-3) at New England Patriots (3-2)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Patriots -7.5. Total: 43.5.

Series Rewind: The Patriots have won 18 of the past 20 meetings.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown could be back for the first time since he hurt his right ankle in a 13-10 Week 1 loss to Seattle. The Patriots are waiting until at least Saturday to gauge whether Brown is fully ready. The Jets snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Cleveland 17-12 last week. The Jets have committed just three turnovers through five games, with quarterback Geno Smith throwing six touchdown passes and no interceptions on 147 attempts. New York wide receiver Garrett Wilson has 31 receptions for 374 yards and three touchdowns. New England cornerback Christian Gonzalez practiced Friday and could be back for another showdown with Wilson. In three head-to-head meetings, Gonzalez limited Wilson to eight receptions for 72 yards on 51 total routes. The Jets have the NFL’s fifth-best scoring defense (19.2 ppg) and will be facing a New England offense that may not have running back TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) or starting left tackle Will Campbell (knee). Henderson and Campbell were both injured against the Raiders, and, like Brown and Gonzalez, were limited in Wednesday’s practice. New England quarterback Drake Maye was intercepted seven times during New England’s first four games, but completed 26 of 34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns without an interception during the Patriots’ 45-17 victory over Las Vegas last week.

New Orleans Saints (1-4) at New York Giants (3-1-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Saints -1.5. Total: 45.5.

Series Rewind: New Orleans has won three consecutive games against the Giants. The all-time series (regular-season games only) between the teams is tied 17-17.

Jameis Winston played four seasons in New Orleans and made 10 starts for the Saints. Now he’s the Giants’ starter after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury. Winston is 2-0-1 as the starter in potentially his most extended opportunity since being Tampa Bay’s No. 1 quarterback from 2015-19. The Giants leaned more heavily on Winston last week than they had previously and he responded by passing for 326 yards and three touchdowns in leading the team back from a 14-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter to escape Washington with a 27-27 tie. He passed for 254 yards and all three touchdowns after halftime. New York is 3-0 at home, including a 28-20 season-opening win vs. the Cowboys, the only full game Dart played. The Saints played their last three games at home and lost all three, prompting owner Gayle Benson to publicly call the team’s performance “not acceptable to me” and to say she was committed “to making the decisions necessary to improve this team.” After the game Sunday, the Saints will fly to Paris to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 25, then have their bye week, meaning they won’t play at home again until Nov. 8 against the Cleveland Browns. During the final nine quarters of the three-game homestand, New Orleans turned the ball over eight times, including three interceptions and two fumbles by Shough.

Baltimore Ravens (4-1) at Cleveland Browns (3-2)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Ravens -3.0. Total: 39.5

Series Rewind: Baltimore swept last season’s two meetings and has won the past three. The Browns have started Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco, Bailey Zappe, Jameis Winston, Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback in the past six meetings.

The Ravens will see former offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who’s now on the enemy side as Cleveland’s first-year coach. Watson has received another chance with Monken around and he’s been productive early with 1,010 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions. Wideout Denzel Boston has been an immediate hit, leading all rookies with 330 receiving yards and leading the NFL with a 20.6 average per catch. The Browns are improved but the old warts were back during last week’s 17-12 loss to the New York Jets. Cleveland had just 198 yards in the contest. Overall, the Browns are struggling offensively and rank 29th in total offense (273.6) and are tied for 27th in scoring offense (18.6). Cleveland defensive tackle Mason Graham (knee/ankle) practiced Friday after missing last week. The Ravens are hoping that quarterback Lamar Jackson (ankle) will be ready after he missed last week’s 30-23 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons. But he missed his second consecutive full week of practice. Tyler “Snoop” Huntley could land another start. Huntley scored the game-winning points on a 1-yard run against the Falcons and completed 24 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Derrick Henry rushed for 102 yards against Atlanta. He ranks fifth in the NFL in rushing yards (476) and is tied for second with seven rushing touchdowns.

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-4)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

Fan Duel odds: Steelers -2.5. Total: 38.5.

Series Rewind: Pittsburgh has won six of the past seven meetings and 10 of 12 all-time. Tom Brady was Tampa Bay’s quarterback the last time these teams met in 2022 and the Buccaneers fell 20-18 after Brady’s two-point conversion throw was broken up by Devin Bush with 4:38 remaining.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has thrown three touchdown passes in three consecutive games and completed a season-best 71% of his throws in last week’s 34-22 home win over the Indianapolis Colts. Rodgers has overall passed for 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions. But the MVP of the offense has been 5-foot-8 Jaylen Warren, who became the sixth player in NFL history to have a rushing touchdown of 50 or more yards and a receiving score of 80 or more yards in the same game. Warren had a career-high 188 scrimmage yards (101 rush, career-best 87 receiving yards) against the Colts and is tied for sixth in the NFL with 410 rushing yards. Steelers star linebacker T.J. Watt continues to excel and has 4.5 sacks and an interception return for touchdown. Undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels is in line to make his third straight start with Baker Mayfield still recovering from a dislocated right thumb. Mayfield missed practice again Thursday. Daniels guided the Buccaneers to a 24-16 victory over the host Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 8 as he completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown. But the biggest contributor was running back Bucky Irving, who had a career-best 165 rushing yards to go with two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) to fuel a ground attack that rolled up 241 yards. Irving ranks eighth in the NFL with 406 rushing yards.

Carolina Panthers (2-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-3)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Panthers -3.5. Total 38.5.

Series Rewind: The Eagles are 9-4 against the Panthers in the regular season. The last four meetings have been decided by six or fewer points, including Carolina’s 22-16 loss at Philadelphia the last time they met in Week 14 in 2024.

Philadelphia has lost three straight games and is playing without Jalen Hurts and possibly Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith. Fourth-year backup quarterback Tanner McKee is poised to make just his third NFL start after drawing Week 18 assignments in each of the past two seasons. He will need help from wideouts Darius Cooper (four touchdowns on seven catches this season) and Dontayvion Wicks, who has averaged just 37.7 yards during the losing streak. Coordinator Vic Fangio’s defense ranks 29th in the NFL with only three takeaways, including zero fumble recoveries. The Panthers are rested after a bye week and looking to climb above .500 for the first time this season. Bryce Young leads the NFL with 317 passing yards per game and has thrown three TD passes in each of his past two starts. Running back Chuba Hubbard has had success in the past against Philadelphia with a combined 241 yards from scrimmage and one score in two meetings. The defense ranks 31st against the run (156.5 yards per game).

Arizona Cardinals (1-4) at Los Angeles Rams (2-3)

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Rams -12.5. Total: 51.5.

Series Rewind: The Rams have won three consecutive games over Arizona. Matthew Stafford threw four TD passes in the 37-20 victory to end the 2025 regular season.

Another hard-luck defeat, 37-34 to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, sends the Rams into Week 6. They’ve played well in the second half of late — LA scored 14 fourth-quarter points to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20 in Week 4 and forced overtime against the Bills with 20 fourth-quarter points — but a complete game has been fleeting. Matthew Stafford has started to hit his stride after a slow start, completing 74.1% of his passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills. He did not throw an interception for the first time this season. Puka Nacua had a career-high 17 receptions that went for 138 yards and a touchdown. Davante Adams had two TD receptions of his own. But the Rams’ kicking game proved costly. They signed Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad. In 50 career NFL games over three seasons, mostly for the New Orleans Saints, Grupe has made 81.9% of his field goals. The Cardinals arrive on a four-game losing streak after a 45-21 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The next day, the Cardinals traded Marvin Harrison Jr. to Houston. Jacoby Brissett completed 61.7% of his passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, but the Cardinals’ defense gave up 412 total yards, including 163 on the ground. The Lions put the game away with three second-half touchdowns. Arizona now heads back to the Los Angeles area, where they got their season off to what appeared to be a promising start with a 26-14 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Arizona gave up an average of 37 points over their last four games and former Rams assistant Mike LaFleur, in his first season coaching the Cardinals, might limit Jeremiyah Love this week because of an ankle injury. The Rams will be without left tackle Alaric Jackson, who was suspended for an altercation after Monday’s loss.

Los Angeles Chargers (0-5) at Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Chiefs -7.5. Total 41.5.

Series Rewind: In their most recent meeting in Week 15 last season, the Chargers completed their first sweep of the Chiefs since 2013, eliminated Kansas City from playoff contention and left Patrick Mahomes with a torn left ACL.

Coming off a bye week, the Chiefs are looking for their fifth 5-0 start since head coach Andy Reid arrived in 2013. Including his 5-0 start with the Eagles in 2004, he can become the third coach in NFL history with six such starts (George Halas, Paul Brown). Mahomes is 10-4 against the Chargers with 28 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. Running back Kenneth Walker is off to a sizzling start with 621 scrimmage yards and six TDs in his first four games with Kansas City, which is playing at home for the first time in nearly a month (Sept. 20 win over the Colts). Travis Kelce needs six catches to pass Cris Carter (1,101) for sixth place in NFL history. Off to their worst start since 2003, the Chargers rank 30th with just 16.8 points per game. Justin Herbert has thrown at least one touchdown — and at least one pick — in every contest this season. Outside linebacker Khalil Mack has 10 sacks in 17 career games against the Chiefs.

Buffalo Bills (4-1) at Las Vegas Raiders (3-2)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

Fan Duel odds: Bills -5.5. Total: 53.5.

Series Rewind: Buffalo has won the past three meetings and five of seven. The series dates back to 1960 when both teams were part of the American Football League. One forgettable meeting for the Raiders is when the Bills rolled to a 51-3 victory in the 1990 season AFC title game to reach the Super Bowl.

The Bills can move the ball at will and score often but they also can’t seem to slow down opposing offenses. That means a high-scoring affair could be on tap with Buffalo tied for the league lead in scoring at 32.8 points and Las Vegas checking in ninth at 26.4. The Bills stand 28th in scoring defense (28.2) and 30th in total defense (388.6). Monday’s 37-34 overtime road win over the Los Angeles Rams marked the third time this season Buffalo has scored more than 30 points and given up more than 30 in the same game. Running back James Cook III lost two fumbles – one in overtime with the Bills in field-goal range – and that takes the shine off him ranking third in the NFL with 532 rushing yards. Quarterback Josh Allen leads the NFL with eight rushing scores and he rushed for 121 yards against the Rams while passing the ball just 19 times. Receiver DJ Moore (shoulder) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee) both look likely to miss their second consecutive games. The Raiders have dropped two straight contests and were whipped 45-17 by the host New England Patriots last week. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is playing well with 1,269 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions while tight end Brock Bowers had eight receptions for 110 yards and one score against New England. Running back Ashton Jeanty had just 27 yards on 10 carries and has a paltry 3.3 average with 291 rushing yards. The Raiders entered the week tied for the NFL lead in turnover margin (+10).

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) at Green Bay Packers (3-2)

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Packers -1.5. Total: 52.5.

Series Rewind: These non-divisional rivals played to a 40-40 tie in overtime last season in Texas, racking up a combined 925 yards of offense. Including the playoffs, the Cowboys have lost five of their last six games at Lambeau Field.

The Cowboys have alternated wins and losses through five games this season. They are 0-2 in prime time, losing on Sunday night in Week 1 to the Giants and on Thursday night in Week 5 to the Buccaneers. Dak Prescott is just 1-3-1 against Green Bay in the regular season despite racking up 16 total touchdowns (14 passing, two rushing). CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are facing a Packers defense that ranks No. 5 against the pass, allowing 181 yards per game with more interceptions (seven) than TD passes allowed (six). Running back Javonte Williams has scored 20 touchdowns in his first 21 games with Dallas. Green Bay has bogged down in the red zone with TDs on only nine of 18 trips inside the 20. Jordan Love threw for 337 yards and three scores last season at Dallas, while Christian Watson set a career high with three TD catches in his only prior meeting against the Cowboys back in 2022. Discipline has been an issue for coach Matt LaFleur’s club with 46 penalties for 369 yards.

BRUINS ESCAPE 2-GOAL HOLE, EMERGE WITH WIN OVER DUCKS

Elias Lindholm scored to break a third-period tie, capping a two-point performance as the visiting Boston Bruins registered a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday.

David Pastrnak netted one goal and one assist for the Bruins, who scored four unanswered goals, three on the power play, to run their winning streak to four games. Frederic Brunet potted his first career NHL goal, Matthew Poitras added a tally, and Pavel Zacha and James Hagens each logged two assists.

Bruins goaltender Michael DiPietro made 25 saves to earn his first NHL victory in his sixth game and fourth start.

Tim Washe and Beckett Sennecke scored for the Ducks, who squandered a 2-0 lead and have dropped their second game in a row. Goalie Lukas Dostal stopped 18 shots.

While the Bruins converted three of their four power-play opportunities, the Ducks were blanked on five chances with the extra skater. Anaheim also mustered only four shots on goal in the third period.

After watching his team erase a 2-0 deficit, Lindholm put Boston on top at 8:18 of the third period with a tap-in tally set up by Zacha while on a power play.

Poitras added an insurance goal eight minutes later when he finished a 2-on-1 rush on a setup from Hagens.

Anaheim tallied twice late in the first period. Washe opened the scoring with 37.3 seconds remaining in the frame, finding the twine with his long shot from the point that made it through a screen and DiPietro’s legs.

Sennecke doubled the lead 21 seconds later, notching his fifth of the season by finishing a three-way passing play.

Brunet, a 2022 fifth-round draft choice, halved Boston’s deficit at 3:15 of the second period. He sent a long shot from the blue line that made it through the maze of traffic for his milestone marker.

Pastrnak tied the clash with another man-advantage goal at 3:26 of the third period, pouncing on a loose puck during a scramble for his third of the campaign.

Pastrnak took sole possession of the fourth spot on the Bruins’ all-time goals list with his 423rd career tally, passing Brad Marchand. He trails only Johnny Bucyk (545 goals), Phil Esposito (459) and Patrice Bergeron (427).

NATHAN MACKINNON’S 4-POINT NIGHT POWERS AVALANCHE PAST PENGUINS

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists to lead the host Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

Artturi Lehkonen scored twice, while Gabriel Landeskog and T.J. Hughes added goals for the Avalanche, who played their third game in four nights. Martin Necas had three assists, Cale Makar added two and Mackenzie Blackwood made 29 saves.

Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust got the goals for the Penguins, who are 1-4-1 in their last six. Arturs Silovs made 27 saves.

Colorado scored three goals in the second period to go up 4-2.

Lehkonen’s second goal 25 seconds into the period tied it 2-2. He knocked down the rebound of MacKinnon’s shot off the goal post with his glove and scored from the crease.

Landeskog gave Colorado the lead for good at 4:24, slamming a Brock Nelson pass into the open side of the net. Hughes scored his first career NHL goal when he tipped in MacKinnon’s pass with 5:03 left in the period, four seconds after an Avalanche power play expired.

MacKinnon added a power-play goal on a one-timer from just above the left dot with 4:54 left to make it five straight goals for the Avalanche. He has 16 points (six goals and 10 assists) in eight games this season.

Silovs stopped MacKinnon’s penalty shot attempt 15 seconds before Landeskog’s goal.

Pittsburgh jumped ahead 2-0 with two goals 29 seconds apart in the first period.

Malkin scored as he cut across the slot after charging down the right wing, shot as he fell and beat Blackwood 8:28 into the game. Rust then tipped in Sidney Crosby’s pass on a 2-on-1 rush at 8:57.

Colorado got on the board with 8:59 left in the first on Lehkonen’s first goal. He tipped in a pass from MacKinnon off the rush.

New Avalanche assistant coach Brett McLean made his debut behind the bench after replacing Dave Hakstol, who departed to become the head coach at Arizona State.

RETIEF GOOSEN TAKES 1-STROKE LEAD AT SAS CHAMPIONSHIP

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen fired a 7-under-par 65 on Friday and took a one-stroke lead after one round of the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.

Australian Richard Green, who was in contention after two rounds last week at the Constellation Furyk & Friends, recorded another stellar opening round, coming in at 6-under 66 at Prestonwood Country Club.

Tag Ridings, who tied for ninth a week ago, is one stroke behind Green, while David Duval, Paul Goydos, Chad Campbell, Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen and Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson are in a group tied at 4-under 68.

Goosen, the South African who was known for his consistency on the PGA Tour, has carried that play over to the PGA Tour Champions circuit. The 57-year-old has nine top-10s in 2026 and won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic — his fifth tour title — in late April.

Goosen was two shots behind Goydos when he came to the par-5 17th hole. His second-shot approach from the center of the fairway landed on the front of the green and came to rest around 5 feet from the hole. He drained the eagle putt and birdied No. 18 to take the lead.

“I hit a lot of good iron shots today for a change,” Goosen said. “I’ve been hitting everything so far away from the hole, had no chances, and today I probably hit four, five shots within 5 feet. That makes it a little easier. And these greens are tricky, they’re very crusty and a breeze picked up a little bit. Yeah, overall very happy with the round.”

Goydos double-bogeyed the finishing hole.

Green made six birdies on the day and led the field in scrambling, rescuing all five chances with a solid chipping game.

But Green, along with the rest of the field, are expecting major weather changes over the weekend with rainy, windy conditions forecast for Saturday and chilly temperatures on tap for Sunday.

“I spent four weeks at home recently at the end of winter and it was pretty cold when I was practicing back there,” said Green. “I’ve got a bit of an idea of how it will feel with a few layers on. But it’s hard to believe, it’s so nice today and who knows what it’s going to be like tomorrow.”

Duval started with a bogey on the par-4 10th hole, but birdied four consecutive holes (Nos. 17 through 2) to jumpstart his round.

“A continuation of how I feel like I’ve been playing,” said Duval. “More than anything, the pieces fit together. I feel like I’ve been playing good golf. A few putts went in, which hasn’t been happening and makes all the difference.”

Defending champion Alex Cejka of Germany was tied for 28th after shooting a 1-under 71.

HYE-JIN CHOI MAINTAINS 2-STROKE LEAD IN SHANGHAI

South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi maintained a two-stroke lead at the Buick LPGA Shanghai despite shooting a 2-over 74 in blustery conditions at Sheshan Golf Club on Friday.

Choi is at 6-under 138 after two rounds as she seeks her first win on the LPGA Tour. She carded two birdies and four bogeys, including three over a six-hole stretch on the front nine.

“It’s my fifth year in LPGA Tour. I had a lot of chances before but I kind of missed it,” Choi said. “I had a lot of experience through that, and through the experience if I win this week … maybe next time I have another chance, this experience will also help me.”

Countrywoman Amy Yang (71 on Friday) and Australia’s Grace Kim (72) are tied for second place at 4-under.

Yang was one of only six golfers to shoot under par in the second round. She finished with four birdies and three bogeys.

“Definitely playing tough, yeah,” Yang said. “With the wind picked up today, yeah, it was tough.”

Kim had one bogey and one birdie on the front nine and repeated the pattern on the back.

“This is a beast of a golf course,” Kim said. “And with the wind picking up today, like I just had to play as most patient as possible. You know, we had a bit of gusts here and there and a few waits as well, so I feel like the momentum kind of kept getting stopped.”

Another shot back are Japan’s Erika Hara (72) and Rio Takeda (73) and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda (74).

Defending champion Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand (73) and hometown favorite Ruoning Yin (74) are tied for seventh at 2-under.

South Korea’s Minji Kang and Thailand’s Natthakritta Vongtaveelap each recorded a hole-in-one. Kang aced the 178-yard sixth hole using a 6-hybrid and Vongtaveelap posted hers at the 148-yard fourth hole with a 9-iron.

“I saw that went in,” Kang said. “I didn’t really expect … made another hole-in-one this year. It was my second hole-in-one this year, but so I was surprised and happy with it.”

This is the sixth edition of the Buick LPGA Shanghai and the first at the 6,735-yard Sheshan Golf Club, which previously hosted the HSBC Champions tournament 11 times.

Shanghai is the first of four events on the LPGA Tour’s late-season Asian Swing, with upcoming stops in South Korea, Malaysia and Japan.

(COLTS RELEASE)

Jonathan Taylor hasn’t rushed for over 100 yards in 12 consecutive games. That’s headline No. 1 for the Colts heading into Week 6.

The second headline is the Colts have averaged 160.7 rushing yards per game over their six-game winning streak against the Tennessee Titans. Taylor, in his last three meetings with the Titans, has rushed for 218, 102 and 153 yards with nine total touchdowns.

One streak will end on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts certainly expect it’ll be Taylor’s dozen-game 100-yard drought.

“If he’s got space and he gets through there, that’s when he gets to the second and third level and makes some guys miss in those situations,” head coach Shane Steichen said. “That’s where the big ones come from for sure. And then just breaking arm tackles and so on, and so forth. But obviously, if it’s in the hole and you’re going through the line of scrimmage and there’s bodies in there, you got to get what you can and fall forward.”

Taylor enters Week 6 averaging just 3.9 yards per carry, well below his career clip of 4.8 yards per attempt.

The Colts don’t see that singular stat as an indication the 27-year-old Taylor’s play has dipped. It’s more about the ways opposing defenses are scheming to stop Taylor both from gaining efficient yardage and from turning a 10-yard rush into a field-flipping, 30-plus-yard gain.

“The NFL run game is an 11-man run game. Everybody on the field is important,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. “Obviously, JT has been so valuable for us over the years, but we’re all pushing to improve our level of play, improve our level of coaching. That’s the best way to have good results is to focus on the process, focus on what we need to do each day to get a little bit better, and as we do that, results come along with it.”

Per NGS, Taylor has been hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on 47.5 percent of his rushing attempts, the seventh-highest rate in the NFL. He’s proven adept at still grinding out yards – he’s been stopped for zero or fewer yards on 17.8 percent of his runs, which is a tick lower than his career average – but hasn’t been able to turn those into anything more than a couple of yards on most of those carries.

Again, the Colts don’t see this as a Taylor problem.

Opposing defenses have certainly made taking Taylor away an emphasis over the last few years, certainly since his breakout 2021 season. There are ebbs and flows to exactly how that looks – the Colts in 2025 faced stacked boxes (8+ defenders) at the ninth-lowest rate in the NFL (20.4 percent); this year, they’re facing stacked boxes at the ninth-highest rate in the NFL (27.7 percent).

And no team in 2026 has seen a lower rate of light boxes (six or fewer defenders) on rushing plays than the Colts (20.4 percent).

“Schematically, every week we look at those things and being able to adjust when teams are playing different fronts will be big for us moving forward,” head coach Shane Steichen said. “We get the fronts and the looks we want, execution’s got to be at a premium. He sees it right, hits it right, will be good. Obviously, the chunk plays like we saw last year, we haven’t had those in the run game, and it’d be great to get back to that and get those explosives going forward.”

The Titans’ defense has different personnel and different coaching this year, with head coach Robert Saleh and ex-Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley leading the charge on that side of the ball. But for whatever reason, Tennessee has been fruitful ground for Taylor to get going.

Facing a 2-3 record and a difficult upcoming stretch, with road games against the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings and 4-1 Jacksonville Jaguars looming, there’s no time like the present for Taylor to break his 100-yard drought and go into those tough weekends with some momentum.

INDIANA PACERS

Playing their final tune-up before the start of the 2026-27 season, the Pacers’ starters impressed in their one half of action on Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Indiana’s starting five played extended minutes over the first two quarters against Milwaukee, with Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, and Pascal Siakam all logging 20 minutes and Ivica Zubac seeing 19 minutes of action. That group — alongside Kelly Oubre Jr., filling in for Aaron Nesmith — made the most of its time on the floor, particularly in the second quarter, where they erupted for 42 points to take a 71-56 lead into halftime.

The Bucks rallied as Indiana rested its starters in the second half and the game went to overtime after a wild finish to regulation, with Milwaukee ultimately prevailing 128-127. But more important than the final score, the Pacers will head into the regular season confident after the first unit’s performance on Friday.

Siakam led Indiana with 24 points, 22 of them coming in the second quarter. The four-time All-Star went 8-for-10 from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point range while also tallying four rebounds and three assists.

“I put a lot of work into my game,” Siakam said. “I’m really never worried about anything. I just go out there and play the game the right way. I know that when you play the game the right way, you always get rewarded.”

Haliburton added 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting (3-of-5 from 3-point range), three rebounds, and six assists. Zubac recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, while Nembhard tallied 11 points and seven assists.

Nembhard scored seven points in a 30-second span minutes into Friday’s contest to give the Pacers an early lead. But a subsequent six-minute scoring drought allowed Milwaukee to surge ahead.

The Blue & Gold missed nine straight shots and committed three turnovers before Ivica Zubac ended the drought with a two-hand slam with 2:06 remaining in the opening quarter. Obi Toppin knocked down a three on Indiana’s next possession to tie the game at 21 and Nembhard followed with a runner to put the hosts back in front.

The run didn’t stop there. Siakam converted two free throws with 43.6 seconds remaining in the frame, Haliburton buried a deep three in transition with 29.7 seconds left, and Zubac made one of two foul shots with 15.1 seconds to play as Indiana closed the quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 29-21 lead into the second quarter.

Siakam continued the run by scoring the first six points of the ensuing frame, drilling a 3-pointer and then converting an old-fashioned three-point play to push the lead to 14.

Siakam scored 13 of Indiana’s first 19 points in the second quarter before Haliburton got in on the act. The All-Star point guard first knocked down a jumper with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter. The next trip down the floor, he exploded to the rim and threw down a one-hand slam, screaming to the crowd in celebration as he landed.

Haliburton added another three at 4:04, and Siakam followed with back-to-back treys to stretch the margin as high as 19 points. The Pacers took a 15-point lead into the intermission.

Indiana opened the second half with a new starting five of Quenton Jackson, Ben Sheppard, Kobe Brown, Toppin, and Jay Huff. Milwaukee kept its starters in for a shift in the third quarter and Tyler Herro erupted for 16 points in the frame as the Bucks slowly whittled Indiana’s lead down to 93-90 by the end of the quarter.

The visitors eventually took the lead on Kevin Porter Jr.’s 3-pointer with 9:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bucks led 110-104 with just over three minutes to play, but a Keba Keita bucket and a Rienk Mast three pulled Indiana back within one.

After a defensive stop, two-way forward Jalen Slawson’s layup put Indiana back in front with 1:50 to play. Two-way guard Braden Smith then stole the ball from former Pacer Kam Jones at midcourt and connected with Keita on an alley-oop to stretch the margin to three.

Jones bounced back by hitting a three from in front of Milwaukee’s bench to tie the game at 113 with 1:15 remaining. But Brown was fouled on a rebound and went to the line with 29.3 seconds to play, making both free throws to put Indiana back on top.

On the other end, Bucks guard Cormac Ryan was fouled with 11 seconds left. He missed the first free throw, but made the second. Milwaukee then had to foul Brown, sending him to the line again with 9.2 seconds to play. The fourth-year forward made both free throws once again.

Up three, Indiana intentionally fouled Kasparas Jakucionis, who also made the first but missed the second free throw. Bucks center Kel’el Ware came up with the rebound and was fouled with 6.9 seconds left. He missed both free throws and the Bucks missed two putback attempts, the second one swatted out of bounds by Keita.

But on the ensuing inbound, Ware dunked over Keita to tie the game and force overtime.

In the extra session, Milwaukee jumped out to a five-point lead only for the Pacers to reel off six straight. The two teams then traded buckets on four straight possessions, capped by Ware’s basket putting Milwaukee up by one with 56.3 seconds to play.

After Smith missed a three, Jakucionis found Ware for a layup to make it a three-point game with 14 seconds to play. Brown’s attempt at a game-tying three came up short. Keita rebounded the ball and put it back in with 1.2 seconds remaining, but Indiana came up a point short.

Toppin had 12 points and seven rebounds while going 4-for-7 from 3-point range in 18 minutes off the bench, the lone Pacer reserve to reach double figures. Brown added 12 points, three boards, and three assists.

Herro led Milwaukee with 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting (5-of-7 from 3-point range). Rookie guard Brayden Burries added 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists off the bench.

The Pacers will now turn their focus to Wednesday’s regular season opener in New Orleans. Indiana’s home opener is two days later on Friday, Oct. 23 against Dallas.

“I feel good about where we’re at, but we’ve got a lot to get better on,” Siakam said. “We’ve got a lot of film that we’re going to watch and a lot of data that we can study on how we can be better and improve as a team. [The preseason] was great, but obviously we’re looking forward to game one.”

Inside the Numbers

Playing his first competitive games since tearing his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, Haliburton tallied 48 points and 15 assists over three preseason games, going 19-for-36 (52.8 percent) from the field and 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

Zubac pulled down nine of his 11 rebounds in a 4:52 stretch spanning the end of the first and start of the second quarters. Despite playing just the first half, he registered a double-double in each of the final two preseason games.

Myles Turner — now in his second year with Milwaukee after 10 seasons in Indiana — had seven points on 3-of-9 shooting, 13 rebounds, and three blocks in 23 minutes for the Bucks.

After scoring 71 points in the first half, Indiana scored just 46 points over the final two quarters.

The Pacers had 23 turnovers to Milwaukee’s 16 giveaways.

You Can Quote Me On That

“Pascal really had a great showing in the first half today. It was kind of like his night. Ty is always going to be the guy that sets the table for everyone. I think he and Zu have a great rapport already in the pick-and-roll, in the pitch game.” -assistant coach Pierce on the starters’ strong performance

“I think we’re unlocking each other offensively, figuring out where guys are going to be…I thought Drew was great tonight, I thought Kelly was great tonight. The ball’s just flying around. I think offensively we are who we are. We’re going to be one of the best offensive teams in the league with our personnel. We’ve just got to be better defensively.” -Haliburton on the starters’ performance on Friday

“We’ve got high-character guys and highly competitive guys. They let us coach them all the time. They enjoy playing with each other as well, which makes it easier.” -Pierce on coaching this group

“I enjoy it. I enjoy all those jumbo lineups and having things that are not really seen all the time. I love that because it creates a different look that teams don’t really expect.” -Siakam on playing a few minutes with a bigger frontcourt alongside Toppin and Zubac

“It’s special, man. I don’t take basketball for granted. I don’t take the opportunity to be healthy and be back on the floor doing what I love for granted. This state, this fanbase means a lot to me. It’s very much appreciated.” -Haliburton on the loud ovation he got during pregame introductions

Stat of the Night

Siakam scored 22 points in the second quarter alone. He has scored 22 or more points in a quarter just twice in the regular season over his 10-year career. Only four players have scored 22 points for the Pacers in a regular season game dating back to 1996-97: Haliburton (twice), Mike Dunleavy (twice), Caris LeVert (twice), and Jordan Nwora.

Noteworthy

The Pacers have now played five overtime games over the last four preseasons despite only playing four preseason games each year. Just two of their 82 regular season games last season went to overtime.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle missed Friday’s game for personal reasons. Pierce served as acting head coach in Carlisle’s absence.

Nesmith (left hamstring strain) and forward Jarace Walker (sore left hip) both sat out their second straight preseason contest. Guard T.J. McConnell (undisclosed) did not play in any of the four preseason games, while forward Johnny Furphy will be sidelined to start the regular season as he continues to rehab from tearing his right ACL in February.

The Pacers and Bucks will meet for their traditional four games in the regular season. Indiana visits Milwaukee on Oct. 26 and again on March 20. The Pacers will host the Bucks twice in one week at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, on Jan. 9 and 13.

Up Next

The Pacers will tip off the 2026-27 regular season in New Orleans against Zion Williamson and the Pelicans on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8:00 PM ET.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

EUGENE, Ore. – In a match that featured 26 ties and 11 lead changes, the Indiana volleyball team (10-6, 3-4 B1G) came out on the wrong side of another five-set road match against a top-15 team. The Hoosiers won set four to force the deciding fifth frame but suffered couldn’t find points late in the defeat (25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 9-15) to 11th-ranked Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Hoosiers’ block was the best it has been all year, holding Oregon to just a .224 hitting percentage. Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema had a hand in nine blocks, two of them solo. It is the third match of her career with at least nine rejections. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic had a career high six blocks. IU’s 16 team blocks were the most in a Big Ten match since 2023 (18 – vs. Illinois).

With the three-rotation return of third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark, IU’s offensive lineup looked like what head coach Steve Aird envisioned in the summer. As the match went on, Oregon’s defense rose to the occasion and stymied IU’s diverse attack. The Hoosiers hit just .195 (57-27-154) in the contest, ked by 19 kills from second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager. Second-year middle blocker Victoria Gray came off the bench with eight kills.

Boersema finished just shy of the rare middle blocker double-double. She added nine kills to pair with her nine blocks. All five primary attackers that finished the match provided seven-or-more kills. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum had 10 kills but hit just .065. Krickovic finished the match with 47 assists.

IU will look to end a three-match losing streak while visiting No. 20 Washington in Seattle on Sunday (Oct. 18) afternoon. First serve from Alaska Airlines Arena is set for 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on B1G+. It’s the fourth ranked opponent that IU will have played in Big Ten action this year.

How it Happened

• Oregon rode the momentum of the home crowd to a big fifth-set victory. IU committed eight attacking errors in the deciding set and trailed the entire way. In total, the contest was decided by five points with the Ducks coming out on the winning side.

• When they needed it most, the Ducks went to their hard-hitting offensive trio on the pins. Oregon’s three pin attackers combined for 45 kills. The Hoosiers got just 36 from their collection of attackers, led by 19 from second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager. 18 kills from IU’s middles weren’t enough in the offensive category.

Top Hoosier Performers

#24 Jager, Jaidyn

19 kills, 9 digs, 4 blocks, 3 aces, 2 assists

#10 Krickovic, Teodora

47 assists, 6 digs, 6 blocks, 3 kills

#27 Boersema, Ella

9 kills, 9 blocks

Notes to Know

• The Hoosiers racked up 16 total team blocks, including nine in the first two sets. Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema had a hand in nine of those, her third match of her career with at least nine blocks. It’s the first time that IU has had 16-or-more team blocks in a Big Ten match since 2023 (18 – vs. Illinois). Boersema’s nine blocks are the most by an IU player in conference play since 2023 (9 – Savannah Kjolhede at Michigan State).

• Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager finished just shy of her career high with 19 kills in the loss to Oregon. It’s the most kills she’s had in 27 career Big Ten matches, surpassing her previous best of 16 (done three times; most recently at No. 6 Wisconsin – Oct. 1, 2026). She finished one dig away from a double-double as well.

• The Hoosiers racked up nine service aces from the end line, exploiting the seam in Oregon’s passing rotations. It’s the most aces IU has had in a Big Ten match this season. It’s also the most aces that IU has had in a conference contest since last year’s win over Oregon (10 – Nov. 14, 2025).

• Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic racked up 47 assists on the night, the 12th match of her career with at least 45 helpers. She had a hand in a career high six blocks as well. All five of her primary attackers, including second-year middle blocker Victoria Gray, had at least seven kills.

• Third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark made her IU debut in the front row on Friday evening. She appeared briefly in IU’s game last week against USC after missing the first 14 games of the year through injury. She added seven kills, four digs and a block in three rotations of work.

INDIANA MEN’S SOCCER

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — No. 2-ranked Indiana men’s soccer (11-1-2, 4-1-1 B1G) suffered its first defeat of the season Friday (Oct. 16) night, a 1-0 result at Rutgers on a rain-soaked Yurcak Field.

Francesco Di Ponzio’s 73rd-minute goal gave the hosts their fourth ranked victory of the season. Despite the defeat, Indiana’s 4-1-1 mark (13 points) in Big Ten play is tied for the best through six matches played.

KEY MOMENTS

• 32′ – From a free kick in its own half, Indiana quickly moved through the Rutgers defense with one-touch passing, and the ball found its way to Oliver Moller-Jensen on the right wing. Moller-Jensen took a shot first time but couldn’t curve it around the on-rushing keeper.

• 40′ – With missed chances on both sides, Mroz kept it level with a save in a one-on-one situation.

• 59′ – A Nolan Kinsella service from the right side just missed a crashing Stephane Njike, crashing at the back post.

• 73′ – GOAL! Di Ponzio needed a pair of shots to score his winner. His first took a lucky deflection off IU defender Josh Maher, right to the right foot of Di Ponzio, who had a clear shot at the back post and took it. Indiana 1, Rutgers 0

NOTABLES

• Friday’s result snapped Indiana’s 13-match unbeaten streak, the program’s longest unbeaten streak since 2017. Those Hoosiers went 23 matches undefeated (18-0-5) into the NCAA Championship match, where they suffered their lone loss of the year.

• The result also marked the first time an opponent has shut out Indiana this season. The Hoosiers had scored eight goals in their last three Big Ten matches coming into Friday’s match.

• Mroz made seven saves, his second-highest tally of the season.

INDIANA FIELD HOCKEY

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– No. 11 Indiana Field Hockey was unable to push past the No. 2 Northwestern Wildcats on Friday afternoon, falling 4-1, at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington, Ind. It now holds a 9-4 overall record and a 4-1 record in the Big Ten.

KEY MOMENTS

• Indiana was awarded an early penalty corner in the third minute of play, leading to a blocked shot by first-year midfielder Gabriela Garayo Aranceta to warm up the Hoosier offense.

• After a back-and-forth battle on the field, Northwestern’s Ilse Tromp put the first goal on the board to make it 1-0 going into the second quarter.

• The Wildcat advantage wouldn’t last long with third-year forward Mijntje Hagen taking advantage of a penalty corner opportunity, knocking in the equalizer from the right side of the cage.

• The tie was short-lived as a penalty corner awarded to Northwestern would set them up to score a goal by Tromp. As play ended in the first half, it was 2-1 Northwestern.

• After Northwestern’s Ashley Sessa opened up with an early goal after the break, third-year goalkeeper Sadie Canelli was a key piece to the Hoosier defense, making two third-quarter saves.

• The third frame closed with a goal from Raquel Hofmeister of Northwestern. Neither team could knock one in in the final 15, closing the game 4-1 with the Wildcats holding the advantage.

NOTABLES

INDIANA SWIMMING

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 2/5 Indiana won 11 events, scored 469.83 points and placed second in College Swimming League Match 5, its second meet of the brand-new fall tournament, on Friday (Oct. 17) night inside the Mt. SAC Aquatic Center in Walnut, California.

With a win, in its first match, and Friday’s second place finish, Indiana is almost certainly assured a spot in CSL’s postseason. Following results of six matches between 12 teams, three teams will automatically qualify for the Championship Match, and four more for the Wild Card Match. The winner of the Wild Card match advances to the championship. The IU Natatorium in Indianapolis will host both meets, November 5-6.

The Hoosiers finished behind No. 7/9 NC State (469.83) and in front of No. 4/7 Cal (394.33) and No. 8/2 Stanford (311).

Liberty Clark earned MVP honors for the meet after repeating her wins from round one. The second-year Hoosier won all three of her events – the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle.

Classmate Alex Shackell won the honor for Match 1, and she was nearly equally impressive in Match 5. Shackell swept the butterfly events and then contributed to Indiana’s Super Skins win at the end of the meet.

The Indiana women have won the Super Skins 200-yard medley relay now at both CSL meets. The quartet of Miranda Grana, Anita Bottazzo, Shackell and Grace Hoeper was again the last relay standing through four reps of the medley relay.

Bottazzo and NC State’s Eneli Jefimova had great battles in the breaststroke events. NC State elected to swim breaststroke in the 50-yard skins event and nearly regretted it, as Bottazzo took the Wolfpack swimmer to the end – within three tenths in each race leading up to the final, where Jefimova took a half-second win. But Bottazzo got her revenge in the 100-yard breaststroke individual event, touching in 58.25 to beat the reigning NCAA Champion.

The Boilermakers (3-4, 2-2 B1G) forced five turnovers from the Huskies (4-3, 1-3 B1G), Purdue’s most takeaways in a game since also forcing five against Nebraska on Oct. 31, 2015. But Washington totaled 488 yards of offense to Purdue’s 371 and finished with 15 plays that went for 15 or more yards, pulling away in the fourth quarter after narrowly leading most of the game.

Fame Ijeboi scored his first receiving touchdown as a Boilermaker on a 10-yard pass near the end of the first half, improving his season touchdown tally to 10. He is the first Purdue player to score 10 touchdowns through the first seven games of a season since Kory Sheets (10) in 2008.

Antonio Harris led the rushing effort with four carries for 65 yards and a touchdown, including a 59-yard scamper in the second quarter for Purdue’s longest run of the season.

Jojo Hayden logged his second straight game with an interception, as Smiley Bradford and Hudauri Hines recorded their first picks of the season as well. It was the first time Purdue had three different players notch interceptions since Oct. 30, 2021, at Nebraska.

Hayden led the team with nine tackles, including one for a loss. Keyshawn Burgos recorded his first unassisted sack as a Boilermaker when he brought down Washington quarterback Elijah Brown on a third down in the third quarter, forcing a punt.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

GAME DAY AT A GLANCE

Saturday evening will mark the 10th meeting between Notre Dame and BYU. The series stands at a 7-2 Notre Dame advantage all-time.

The Irish are 1-0 against the Cougars under Coach Marcus Freeman.

The two teams last faced off at the 2022 Shamrock Series in Las Vegas on October 8, 2022, when the Irish defeated the No. 16 Cougars 28-20.

Michael Mayer became the career receptions leader for a tight end against BYU in 2022, hauling in his record-breaking 141st reception on a 24-yard pass from Drew Pyne.

The 28-20 win over No. 16 BYU in the 2022 Shamrock Series marked the first ranked win in the Freeman Era. Since that game, Freeman has led the Irish to 16 ranked wins.

Notre Dame has won four consecutive games against BYU in 2005, 2012, 2013, and 2022.

Notre Dame has faced only two Big 12 teams in the Freeman Era: Oklahoma State (2022 Fiesta Bowl) and BYU (2022 Shamrock Series). The Irish are 1-1 in those contests.

When Notre Dame and BYU last met, BYU was a fellow FBS Independent; this will be Notre Dame’s first meeting with BYU in its Big 12 era.

Saturday’s matchup between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 8 BYU will mark the first time both teams have been ranked in series history.

This is the highest ranking either team has had when facing one another. Notre Dame was the No. 3 team in the nation when the Irish traveled to Provo in 1993 and defeated the Cougars 45-20.

This will be the 42nd time ESPN’s College Game Day has appeared to celebrate a matchup featuring the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame is 20-21 all-time with College Game Day in attendance, winning five of its last six games in such environments.

BUTLER VOLLEYBALL

Indianapolis – The Butler Bulldogs defeated the UConn Huskies, 3-0 on Friday night. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 10-9 overall and 4-3 in BIG EAST action. The Huskies slide to 8-12 overall and 1-6 in conference action.

Bulldog Bites

Ava Hunter tallied 15 assists and four digs.

Raegan Durbin posted 10 kills, including six in the third set. Durbin also registered six digs and two blocks.

Jersey Loyer registered eight digs and four assists.

Elise Ward marked seven kills and four digs.

Chase Lemming recorded six kills and two digs.

On the Record with Head Coach Kyle Shondell

“We didn’t know what UConn team to expect tonight. I think that while we pressured them in a lot of areas, we might have gotten some points we don’t always get. But we did a really good job of staying with the game plan, not allowing a flow of points to change our mindset. I was really really pleased with our defense tonight across the board, our block setup was terrific. I think we finished with maybe six or seven blocks, but holding UConn to .036 hitting and no one with more than four kills is significant. We had 13 aces in a three-set match, which is kind of out of this world in a BIG EAST Conference match. And those were kind of the two biggest things we served tough, and we kept them from scoring. They only had 21 kills in the entire match, and so I think that was kind of the name of the game. But we just found out we’ve got a really good team coming here tomorrow night who just swept Xavier, and so we got to get ready for Providence.”

Set 1 Butler (25-17)

Butler opened the first set trading points back and forth with UConn in the early moments of the frame. The Bulldogs took a 15-11 edge over the Huskies at the midway point of the set behind two kills from Carly Slusser  and an ace from Ward. Butler continued to pressure UConn with an 8-4 run, driven by back-to-back kills from Lemming, blocks from Slusser and Zoe McDonald, and an ace from Aesha Vogt. The Huskies fought to crawl back into the set however, Butler claimed the set 25-17.

Set 2 Butler (25-18)

UConn began the second set trading points with the Bulldogs in the opening moments of the frame. Behind a 5-2 run fueled by kills from Durbin and Ellery Reese, as well as an ace from Durbin, the Bulldogs held a narrow 15-13 advantage at the halfway mark. The Huskies continued to fight back, but kills from  Durbin and McDonald led the Bulldogs to a 25-18 set two victory.

Set 3 Butler (25-16)

The Bulldogs opened the third set trading points back and forth with the Huskies. Butler went on a 6-0 run driven by kills from Durbin and Ward as well as an ace from Hunter, to give them a 15-11 edge at the midway point of the frame. Butler continued to pressure UConn in the late moments of the frame behind kills from Durbin and Slusser. The Bulldogs claimed the set, 25-16, to secure the sweep and overall victory.

Up Next

Butler will return to action tomorrow Oct. 17, versus Providence at Hinkle Fieldhouse. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Bulldogs will then travel to Milwaukee, Wis., on Oct. 24,  to face off against Marquette. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.ET (1 p.m. Central).

BUTLER MEN’S SOCCER

INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler men’s soccer team never trailed on Friday, securing a 2-1 win over visiting Villanova. The victory was the Bulldogs’ first in BIG EAST play this season and the first win for Ian Sarachan as the Butler head coach. Butler scored both of its goals in the first half, but the Wildcats closed the gap with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Finn Moran scored both goals for the Bulldogs, notching his first-ever brace.

The Bulldogs now stand at 1-7-3, 1-1-2 BIG EAST, while Villanova drops to 5-6-2, 0-4-1 BIG EAST.

On the Record with Head Coach Ian Sarachan

“We’ve been saying this for the entire year, it seems, that the mentality of this group is so strong…even given the results. There are not a lot of teams around the country that, at the point we are at, continue to fight the way we do. That’s a testament to our guys and the culture of this program. Yes, it’s long overdue, but we know there is still a lot to play for. We have a game in hand, and we play the teams at the top of our division, so let’s use this!”

Key Moments

5′ | Luca Raso has the ball in the middle of the pitch and plays forward to Lou-Kent Bosc who is open and running on the left side. Bosc hits a cross, straight across the face of the goal, and Moran slides to punch it in with his left foot. Butler takes the early lead.

32′ | Raso has the ball on the left side at midfield. He plays forward to Bosc who is by the left touch line. Bosc serves to the far post, and Moran is there to head it directly in. It’s 2-0 Bulldogs.

— HALFTIME —

63′ | Villanova’s Karson Vazquez plays the ball from the near-right side of the pitch into the center. Jayse Rand was there, and he plays it on to Luke Marelli on the left side. Martelli touches the ball forward from the 18, and it rolls under the outstretched arms of the Butler keeper. The ball continues rolling, hits the left post, deflects toward the right post and sneaks into the right side of the net, just behind the right post. Butler’s lead is cut in half.

The opening set featured 13 ties before Wright State broke away late. The teams were even at 19 when the Raiders scored six straight points to secure a 25-19 victory.

IU Indy answered emphatically in the second set. The Jaguars used a seven-point run behind Laura Roeder’s serve to build an 8-1 advantage and never trailed again. IU Indy hit .419 in the frame, recording 16 kills with just three errors, to even the match with a 25-18 win.

The Jaguars erased an early deficit in the third set and took a 16-15 lead on a Grace Purichia kill. The teams traded points until the score reached 18-all, but Wright State closed the set on a 7-1 run to reclaim the match lead with another 25-19 decision.

IU Indy held a 9-8 edge early in the fourth before Wright State responded with five consecutive points. The Jaguars pulled within four late in the frame, but the Raiders held on for a 25-20 win to close the match.

Jillian Tippmann led the IU Indy attack with 14 kills and a .265 hitting percentage. Bailey Sinish added 12 kills and matched her career high with four service aces, while Chloe Macias finished with 11 kills on .292 hitting.

Ninah Miranda rounded out the Jaguars’ quartet of double-digit attackers, putting down 10 kills on a team-best .400 hitting percentage while adding 11 digs for a double-double. Purichia directed the offense with 42 assists and recorded 15 digs, six kills and a block assist. Roeder led the back row with a match-high 16 digs.

BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL

ATHENS, Ohio – – The Ball State offense was firing on all cylinders Friday night, opening a key Mid-American Conference road series with a .299 (33-7-87) hitting percentage to earn a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) sweep over Ohio at the Convocation Center.

Junior outside Ava Smith powered the attack, smashing a match-high 11 kills and hitting .400 (11-1-25) to lead the Cardinals (13-5; 4-3 MAC). In fact, the Bobcats (11-7; 4-3 MAC) led just twice on the night, at 10-9 in the opening set and after pulling ahead 2-0 to start the second.

As solid as the offensive error was, Ball State was just as solid on the defensive front, limiting the Ohio attack to a .082 (32-23-110) rate of success. Junior libero Sophie Ledbetter led the charge in the backcourt with a match-high 13 digs. The effort helped Ball State hole a 46-to-38 edge in total digs.

The Cardinals also continued to pressure with its serve, firing nine more aces paced by a season-high four from senior opposite Tiffany Snook. Over the last two matches, the Cardinals have served up 22 total aces, including its season-high 13 in last Saturday’s sweep over CMU.

Along with her four aces, Snook was second on the squad with seven kills. Freshman opposite Merritt Sliwawas right behind with six kills to go along with a pair of total blocks.

BALL STATE FIELD HOCKEY

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Ball State field hockey team (3-10, 1-5 MAC) suffered a tough 7-1 defeat to Mid-American Conference leader UMass (14-1, 6-0 MAC) on Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.

The visitors demonstrated exactly why they sit atop the conference standings, unleashing a powerful offensive display. UMass wasted no time applying pressure, establishing control early in the game to build a substantial lead. Despite a resilient effort from the Cardinals on their home turf, the Minutewomen’s execution on penalty corners and open-field combinations proved too difficult to contain.

The definitive highlight for Ball State came at the 26:57 mark in the second quarter. Capitalizing on a well-constructed attack, Jemimah Kriechelberg found the back of the cage to score the lone goal for the Cardinals. The play was set up beautifully by teammate Julia Verratti, who provided the assist to spark a wave of energy across the Muncie crowd.

However, UMass responded quickly to stifle any potential momentum, answering with a barrage of their own, including clinical finishes from Sophie Kent, Lina Kroeger, and Neva Eisenga.

Ball State will look to regroup quickly as they remain at the Briner Sports Complex to host longtime rival Miami University (OH) this Sunday at 1 pm ET.

MUNCIE, Ind. – – The Ball State men’s golf team closes the fall portion of its 2026-27 slate starting Monday when it travels to Kettering, Ohio, for the Flyer Invitational hosted by Dayton at the NCR Country Club South Course.

The Cardinals kick off the two-day event with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Monday on the par 71, 7,044-yard course for the first two rounds. Action is scheduled to conclude Tuesday with another 9 a.m. shotgun start for the final round of play.

Ball State is coming off a strong finish at this week’s Purdue Fall Invitational (Oct. 12-13), which saw the squad place third among the 13 teams with a team score of +14 (1094). It was Ball State’s best-ever team finish in the now six-year history of the tournament, with the Cardinals defeating in-state rivals Indiana, Butler and Purdue Fort Wayne.

Looking at the upcoming event at NCR, this will be Ball State’s fourth time competing in the Flyer Invitational since the 2021-22 campaign, with BSU placing fourth among the 12-team field in last season’s edition with a team score of +21 (873).

Luke Johnston led the Cardinals a year ago on the South Course, tying for fourth among the 82-player field with a score of -3 (210). The effort included a -4 (67) in the second round, which tied for the lowest second round score of the event. Also finishing in the Top 20 for the Cardinals in last season’s event were Avery Mahoney in a tie for 18th (+6 / 219) and Cameron Young in a tie for 20th (+7 / 220).

Overall, the Cardinals enter the tournament with a 284.75 team scoring average based on the top four scorers at each of the previous four team events (factoring out the fifth counted score in the non-traditional Purdue Fall Invitational). The effort is on pace to break the program’s single-season scoring average record of 289.72 set by the 2023-24 squad.

MUNCIE, IND. – – The Ball State women’s golf team closes the fall portion of its 2026-27 slate starting Sunday at the Diamante Intercollegiate hosted by Little Rock at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

The Cardinals are one of 20 teams competing in the event and enter the tournament at the top-ranked team among the field in the initial release of the 2026-27 SCOREBOARD powered by clippd rankings.

Ball State was ranked 91st nationally, marking the first time the Cardinals have been ranked inside the top 100 since the end of the 2009-10 campaign when the team was 93rd.

This will be the fifth consecutive season Ball State has finished its fall slate on the par 72, 6,051-yard Diamante Country Club course, which has seen some of the best team and individual performances in program history.

Last season, Ball State produced its first-ever sub-par 54-hole tournament team score on the course, placing fourth among the 18-team field at -2 (862). The effort was led by what is now the third-lowest 18-hole team score in program history at -6 (282) in the first round. Last season’s squad also set the lowest 36-hole team score in the record books on the course with a -2 (574).

Individually, Kiah Parrott’s 54-hole score of -7 (209) in the 2023 event still stands as the second-best mark in program history. In addition, two of the program’s 12 individual rounds of 68-or-lower have come on the course.

It is a great setup for a Cardinals squad looking to continue shattering records this season. Ball State’s golfers turned in the lowest 54-hole team score in program history on its way to winning the 2026 Brittany Kelly Classic with a team score of -6 (858).

The team has also shot a program-record -7 (281) in the final rounds of both the Brittany Kelly Classic and the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.

Individually, freshman Taylor Larkins shot -4 (68) in the second round of both events, while junior Sophie Korthuijs added a -4 (68) in the final round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.

Those efforts help the Cardinals enter the weekend with a 296.08 team scoring average, which is on pace to shatter the single-season mark for the fourth consecutive season. The current record is 299.24 set last season.
