RAYS CAPITALIZE ON GUARDIANS’ ERROR, KNOT ALCS BEHIND FREDDY PERALTA

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays took advantage of an uncharacteristic error by Jose Ramirez to even their American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday.

Ramirez’s miscue opened the door for a three-run frame in the fourth and Freddy Peralta tossed six scoreless innings, fueling the Rays to a 3-1 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series.

Liam Hicks recorded a two-run single and joined Jonny DeLuca with two hits for Tampa Bay.

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is Thursday in Cleveland.

Peralta (1-0) scattered four hits and struck out six while walking two. The right-hander capped his 99-pitch outing by striking out rookie Petey Halpin to end the sixth.

Peralta has allowed one or zero earned runs in eight consecutive outings.

“I define myself as a competitor, and I like these kind of games,” Peralta said. “… I grew up watching the games in (the Dominican Republic). That’s the game that you see. And I’m used to that. I feel that I have that in me.”

Cleveland rookie Chase DeLauter ripped an RBI double down the right field line to trim Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-1 in the seventh. Left-hander Ian Seymour, however, struck out Jo Adell with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Seymour retired the side in order in the eighth to bridge the gap to All-Star closer Bryan Baker, who did the same in the ninth to secure his fourth save of the postseason after leading the major leagues with 41 in the regular season.

“Makes for a happy flight. Mission accomplished on that front,” Baker said.

Ramirez misplayed a routine grounder by Ben Williamson, as the ball bounced through the third baseman’s legs and into left field to allow Victor Mesa Jr. to score the game’s first run in the fourth.

“It’s a little faster here,” Ramirez said of the infield at Tropicana Field, through a club translator. “I was playing parallel to the base and the ball bounced right on the edge between the dirt and the turf.

“I tried to knock it down, but I couldn’t.”

Said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt: “Josey kind of got stuck. It looked like he just didn’t move his feet. And I don’t know if it hit the lip or not on the second hop, but just kind of looked like he sat back a little bit with his feet set instead of moving his feet.”

Hicks followed by sending the next pitch from All-Star rookie left-hander Parker Messick (0-2) into right-center field to plate Chandler Simpson and Williamson and stake Tampa Bay to a 3-0 lead.

“I have to make it count. I have to make them pay for that,” Hicks told MLB Network. “That’s a team that doesn’t make those types of errors. You have to take advantage of any kind of opportunity.”

Vogt credited the Rays for capitalizing.

“They’ve done that all year. When they smell blood, they take it and run,” he said.

Earlier in the inning, the Guardians appeared to have turned their third double play in four innings before Tampa Bay successfully challenged the play. Mesa was ruled safe at first base.

Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero snared a sharp liner by Steven Kwan in the fifth. Caminero then drew a rise out of the crowd by flashing a finger wag in the manner of former renowned NBA shot blocker Dikembe Mutombo.

Messick, a native of nearby Plant City, Fla., permitted three runs (all unearned) on six hits in five innings. He also walked two and hit one batter.

DOWN 2-0 TO BREWERS, DODGERS TRY TO BRING RIGHT MINDSET BACK TO LA

LOS ANGELES — The Milwaukee Brewers have control of the National League Championship Series, enough so that the two-time defending World Series champions pondered what was previously believed to be unthinkable.

With a relentless offense and a dominating bullpen, the Brewers have a 2-0 lead in the NLCS over the Los Angeles Dodgers with the best-of-seven matchup set to resume on the West Coast on Wednesday.

The Dodgers are so troubled about a stagnant offense that they considered reducing four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani to a bench role for at least one game, if not more.

Ohtani is 1-for-7 with a walk in the series and 3-for-20 (1.50) with three walks in six games this postseason as he looks physically compromised after dealing with left knee and right biceps discomfort for three months. He has struck out seven times and has no extra-base hits.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday after talking with Ohtani, who assured him he is healthy enough to play, that the star would remain in the lineup.

“He was very convicted that he is onto something mechanically,” Roberts said. “He was adamant that he can help us. He’s well enough to help us win a baseball game. So that’s all I needed to hear. I’ve never wavered in my belief in him.”

Ohtani, whose health issues prevented him from pitching since early July, spoke to reporters on Tuesday for the first time since the start of the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves.

“The symptoms shouldn’t be the reason why I can’t hit,” Ohtani said through an interpreter, “and even if the injuries happen by accident, I take full responsibility. I take that as an opportunity for me to just take full responsibility for it. Today it’s going to be another process for me to tinker and try new things.”

He said his symptoms have “subdued a lot” since he was on the injured list for two weeks in September. Ohtani said while the results haven’t been what he wants, he believes he is making progress with his mechanics.

“I think there’s different approaches to this,” Ohtani said, “whether that be focusing on reducing the symptoms and getting rid of the pain and/or just making sure that I’m moving well in the swing.”

Los Angeles’ 2025 postseason hero Will Smith is 0-for-7 with a walk in the series and 1-for-23 in the postseason as the Dodgers have averaged 3.2 runs during their six playoff games.

“Grind. Win one game at a time, one pitch at a time,” said Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts, who took over Ohtani’s leadoff spot late in the regular season. “The mindset can’t really change. We can’t add more pressure. There’s already enough as it is. Keep it simple. One pitch at a time. Figure out a way to get a hit.”

They didn’t do much hitting against Milwaukee starters Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson to start the series and did even less against a Brewers bullpen that retired all 15 batters it faced in Game 2.

Milwaukee is now set to send left-hander Robert Gasser (0-0, 2.25 ERA) to the mound in Game 3. The rookie was 5-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 21 regular-season appearances (20 starts) and has already faced the Dodgers twice this season, going 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA.

In the deciding Game 4 of the NL Division Series against the San Diego Padres, Gasser came through with four solid innings, allowing one run in an eventual 3-1 victory.

As for what kind of Dodgers lineup Gasser will face, the Brewers are trying to avoid all the speculation.

“That’s kind of our whole theme coming into this thing: ‘Hey, guys, yeah, they might be this, they might be (that),’” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “… That’s for other people to consider. Let’s just play the game the way we play the game, and let’s go right at people and see what we can do. That’s not going to change.”

If there is an area of concern for Milwaukee, it is with a defense that has not been at its best. Henderson had two throwing errors in Game 2.

“It’s what we do in response that matters,” Murphy said. “… They’ve played good defense. There’s going to be miscues. That’s just part of it. It’s what you do on the next play.”

Also looking to improve is Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell (0-0, 2.45), who will be on the mound for Game 3.

Injuries limited Snell to nine regular-season starts, but he went 4-1 with a 1.90 ERA in them. He then walked five and lasted just 3 2/3 innings in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves.

Snell has just three career regular-season starts against the Brewers and none since 2024, going 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA. He did pitch eight shutout innings against the Brewers in last season’s NLCS with 10 strikeouts.

WEEK 6 NFL PREVIEW

This season, 24 games have featured a game-winning score in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, tied for the third-most such games through Week 5 in NFL history. Three teams – Kansas City (4-0), Minnesota (5-0, Week 6 bye) and San Francisco (5-0) – remain undefeated while eight teams that missed the postseason in 2025 have a winning record through the first five weeks.

Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 6:

Washington (1-3-1) at San Francisco (5-0) (Monday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC): The 49ers can win each of their first six games of a season for the fourth time in franchise history (1984, 1990 and 2019).

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy leads the NFL with 13 touchdown passes and ranks second among qualified passers with a 119.3 rating this season. In Week 6, he can become the first quarterback since 2018 (Philip Rivers) with multiple touchdown passes and a passer rating of 90-or-higher in each of his team’s first six games of a season.

49ers linebacker Fred Warner recorded his 20th career forced fumble last week and is one of three players under the age of 30 with at least 20 forced fumbles and 10 interceptions since 2000, joining Lavonte David and Charles Tillman.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels recorded rushing touchdowns of 38 and 26 yards in Week 5 and became the second quarterback since 1950 with multiple rushing touchdowns of 25-or-more yards in the same game, joining Mike Vick (Dec. 1, 2002).

Los Angeles Chargers (0-5) at Kansas City (4-0) (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS): The Chiefs, coming off a Week 5 bye, can begin 5-0 for the fifth time since head coach Andy Reid was hired in 2013. Reid, who also led Philadelphia to a 5-0 start in 2004, can become the third head coach all-time to lead a team to a 5-0 start in six seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers George Halas (10 seasons) and Paul Brown (six).

Kansas City running back Kenneth Walker has 621 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns this season and is one of two players in NFL history with at least 175 scrimmage yards in three of his first four games with a franchise, joining Billy Sims (1980 with Detroit). In Week 6, he can become the first running back in 60 seasons (Emerson Boozer, 1967 with the New York Jets) with multiple touchdowns in four of his team’s first five games of a season.

Seattle (3-2) at Denver (3-2) (Thursday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, Prime Video): Since the beginning of the 2024 season, the Seahawks have the highest road winning percentage (.842; 16-3) in the NFL while the Broncos have the second-highest home winning percentage (.842; 16-3) during that span.

Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 583 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions entering Week 6. Last week, he became the fourth player in NFL history with at least 100 receiving yards and a touchdown reception in four of his team’s first five games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch (1951 with the Los Angeles Rams), Randy Moss (2007 with New England) and Jerry Rice (1989 with San Francisco).

Denver quarterback Bo Nix led the Broncos to 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter last week in the team’s 23-17 win at the Los Angeles Chargers. Nix has 13 career game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, tied with Justin Herbert and Matt Ryan for the second-most by a player in his first three seasons since 1970. Only Dak Prescott (14 game-winning drives) has more.

Houston (1-4) vs. Jacksonville (4-1) (London, 9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network): For the third consecutive week, the NFL will play a regular season game in London as the Texans and Jaguars meet at Wembley Stadium. Jacksonville defeated Philadelphia, 19-17, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last week while Houston earned their first win of the season with a 26-3 win at Tennessee.

The Jaguars lead the NFL in rushing defense this season (63.8 yards per game allowed) and became the second team in the Super Bowl era to not allow an opposing player to rush for 40-or-more yards in their first five games of a season, joining the 1969 Dallas Cowboys.

This week, Jacksonville can tie the 1998-2000 Baltimore Ravens (23 consecutive games) for the third-longest streak of consecutive games without allowing an opposing player to rush for 75-or-more yards in the Super Bowl era.

Houston defensive end Will Anderson leads the NFL with 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss this season and is one of three players with at least 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in his team’s first five games of a season since 2000, joining Clay Matthews (2010 with Green Bay) and J.J. Watt (2012 with Houston).

Buffalo (4-1) at Las Vegas (3-2) (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS): Last week, Bills quarterback Josh Allen became the fourth quarterback all-time with at least 100 wins, including the postseason, in his first nine career seasons, joining Patrick Mahomes (112), Russell Wilson (107) and Tom Brady (101). Allen totaled 331 yards (210 passing, 121 rushing) and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) in the win, becoming the first quarterback ever with a rushing touchdown in each of his team’s first five games of a season.

Raiders tight end Brock Bowers is one of two tight ends in NFL history with at least 80 receiving yards and a touchdown reception in each of his first three games of a season, joining Rob Gronkowski (2011 with New England). This week, he can become the fifth tight end ever with five receptions, including a touchdown catch, in five consecutive games, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Tony Gonzalez (six from 2008-09) and Antonio Gates (five in 2010) as well as Travis Kelce (six from 2020-21) and Trey McBride (five in 2025).

New York Jets (2-3) at New England (3-2) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Last week, the Jets recorded eight sacks, the most by any team in a game this season, in the team’s 17-12 victory over Cleveland, including three sacks by rookie EDGE David Bailey. Bailey is one of three players in the last 24 seasons (2003-26) to record three sacks in a game within his first five career games, joining Aidan Hutchinson (three sacks on Sept. 18, 2022 with Detroit) and Elvis Dumervil (three sacks on Oct. 22, 2006 with Denver).

In Week 5, New England quarterback Drake Maye became the youngest player ever (24 years, 42 days) and the fourth player all-time with at least 350 passing yards (374), four touchdown passes, a passer rating of 150-or-higher (150.9) and a rushing touchdown in a single game, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Brees (Dec. 29, 2013 with New Orleans), Ryan Fitzpatrick (Sept. 9, 2018 with Tampa Bay) and Aaron Rodgers (Oct. 20, 2019 with Green Bay).

Baltimore (4-1) at Cleveland (3-2) (1 p.m. ET, FOX): The Ravens and Browns are two of eight teams with at least three wins in 2026 that missed the playoffs last season. Cleveland can win each of its first three home games for the third time since 1999 (2004 and 2020) while Baltimore can win each of its first four road games for the second time in franchise history (2020).

Baltimore’s Derrick Henry can become the third running back age 32-or-older with a touchdown in each of his team’s first six games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Walter Payton (1986 with Chicago) and John Riggins (1983 and 1984 with Washington).

Cleveland’s Denzel Boston leads all rookies with 330 receiving yards and leads the NFL with 20.6 yards per reception this season (minimum 10 catches). He is one of five players in the Super Bowl era to record a reception of 25-or-more yards in each of his first five career games, joining Ja’Marr Chase (2021 with Cincinnati), Stefon Diggs (2015 with Minnesota), CeeDee Lamb (2020 with Dallas) and Earl McCullouch (1968 with Detroit).

Dallas (2-3) at Green Bay (3-2) (Sunday night, 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC): Last week, Packers wide receivers Christian Watson (six receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns) and Matthew Golden (six receptions for 123 yards) became the fourth pair of teammates to each average 20-or-more yards per catch on six-or-more receptions in the same game since 2000, joining San Francisco’s Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel (Dec. 10, 2023), Arizona’s Anquan Boldin and Pro Football Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald (Sept. 14, 2008) and Indianapolis’ Reggie Wayne and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison (Nov. 10, 2002).

Watson (26 for 474; 18.2) and Golden (24 receptions for 397 yards; 16.5) are one of four pairs of wide receiver teammates to average at least 16 yards per catch on 20-or-more receptions in their team’s first five games of a season since 2000, joining Dallas’ Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup in 2019, Green Bay’s James Jones and Jordy Nelson in 2013, the St. Louis Rams’ Torry Holt and Pro Football Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce in 2000.

WEEK 5 COACHING MISCUES HAUNT NFL CONTENDERS WHO LOST WINNABLE GAMES

DENVER (AP) — Coaches always preach about putting their players in the best position to succeed. Several fell short of that mantra in Week 5 and instead led their teams to disheartening defeats.

Backfires burned some of the NFL’s most accomplished leaders: The two men who hoisted the most recent Super Bowl trophies — Nick Sirianni and Mike Macdonald — and two-time head coaches Dan Quinn and Jim Harbaugh.

Together, that foursome has won 234 NFL games and has a combined .624 winning percentage. And yet they created openings for opponents to capitalize on their miscalculations or miscues.

Quinn’s quagmire

In Washington, the Commanders inexplicably ran the clock out on themselves in field-goal range and had to settle for a tie against the Giants, falling to 1-3-1.

Both the Giants and Commanders had chances to run the clock down and kick a field goal to win in overtime. New York was in position with 2 minutes remaining to try a 42-yarder. But Dominic Zvada had already missed from 50, 57 and 46 yards, so coach John Harbaugh wanted to get it closer. However, Cam Skattebo fumbled, giving Washington an opportunity.

Jayden Daniels drove the Commanders to the Giants 26. On first down, Rachaad White ran 2 yards and was tackled with just under 50 seconds to go. Instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock and kicking, the Commanders huddled.

Daniels went to the line of scrimmage with around 20 seconds remaining and snapped the ball with 12 seconds to go. He didn’t spike it or throw it out of bounds. Daniels ran, got tackled and was slow to get up, leaving Washington no time for a field-goal attempt as Quinn threw his headset in disgust.

Quinn accepted the blame, saying, “The sequencing of that does not fall on (Daniels). It’s an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards.”

Macdonald’s miscalculation

The 49ers scored on first-half drives of 11 yards and 18 yards after turnovers by Seattle and extended the lead to 21-13 at halftime when the Seahawks’ decision to use timeouts on defense to get the ball back late in the half backfired.

The Seahawks took over on their 4 with 18 seconds left and San Francisco holding three timeouts. Gracen Halton then stripped running back George Holani on the first play and recovered the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

“We want to stay aggressive,” Macdonald said. “We got to be able to execute our run game and hold onto the football.”

The Niners went on to win 32-29, improving to 5-0. The Seahawks have a short week to recover. A loss at Denver on Thursday night would send them to 3-3 a year after they went 17-3.

Sirianni’s Slipup

Sirianni’s depleted Eagles gave away an improbable victory over the Jaguars despite kicking the go-ahead field goal with 8 seconds left.

Jacksonville had no timeouts remaining, so Philadelphia should have kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback and forced the Jaguars to run a play from the 35 — needing about 25 yards to get in field-goal position.

Instead, Jake Elliott kept the ball in play and Ameer Abdullah returned it 53 yards against a unit that allowed a touchdown on the opening kick that was negated by penalty. Abdullah was tackled at the Philadelphia 39 with a second to go, giving Cam Little an opportunity to drill a 57-yarder for a 19-17 victory.

“I lost us that game,” Sirianni said. “And that’s what I said to our guys. And what hurts there is that the guys fought so hard and then I don’t make the decision that I should make at the end of the game and I cost us that game and I put that fully on me.”

The Eagles should have been in position to kick the winning goal as time expired, but the offense mismanaged the sequence leading up to Elliott’s 48-yard attempt, leaving the Jaguars and Little just enough time to snare the win.

Harbaugh’s faux pas

Jim Harbaugh committed a game-turning gaffe that sent the Chargers tumbling to 0-5 following back-to-back 11-win seasons that had many predicting Los Angeles’ first AFC West crown since 2009.

The Chargers were leading Denver 17-10 when Harbaugh went for it on fourth-and-1 at his own 41 with 10 1/2 minutes remaining in an ugly game where the Broncos’ offense was even worse than LA’s.

Que Robinson stuffed Justin Herbert shy of the first-down marker and the Broncos quickly capitalized on the great field position to tie the game on Bo Nix’s 5-yard touchdown throw to Courtland Sutton.

A rattled Herbert turned the ball over in his own territory on the Chargers’ next two possessions, leading to a pair of field goals by Wil Lutz and Herbert was sacked by Ja’Quan McMillian before he could get off a Hail Mary on the game’s final play.

Electing not to punt from his own 41 “was the wrong decision,” said Harbaugh. “I can’t think of a time I’ve ever been more mad at myself. This team works so hard, played so valiantly, and I take 100% accountability for making that decision. It turned the momentum of the game.

“I did not put our players, our team or our organization in the best position to win that game.”

He wasn’t alone on a weekend filled with gambles that didn’t pay off.

RAMS CUT K HARRISON MEVIS AFTER 2 MISSES VS BILLS, SIGN EX-SAINTS K BLAKE GRUPE, AP SOURCE SAYS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have cut kicker Harrison Mevis one day after he missed two field-goal attempts in a 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, a person with knowledge of the decision said.

The Rams are also signing former New Orleans kicker Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the Rams’ special teams shakeup hadn’t yet been publicly announced.

Mevis missed an early 50-yard field-goal attempt against the Bills, and his 48-yard attempt in overtime was blocked by Greg Rousseau. His four missed field-goal attempts through five games are the most in the NFL this season.

Head coach Sean McVay said afterward that the Rams’ placekicking unit “cost us the game tonight.” The Rams (2-3) have been plagued by poor special teams play since the start of last season, and McVay vowed to make a thorough review of everything in that area of the game.

The Rams signed Mevis midway through last season to replace Joshua Karty, and the bulky newcomer dubbed “The Thiccer Kicker” made 12 of his 13 field-goal attempts in his first NFL season before going 6 for 6 in the playoffs. His only miss was costly, however, coming in a one-point overtime loss to eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle.

Mevis is just 5 for 9 on field goals this season, although he has yet to miss an extra-point attempt in his career.

Grupe is a four-year NFL veteran who spent his first 2 1/2 seasons as the New Orleans Saints’ kicker before getting released last November during a rough season. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts and finished strong, making all 11 of his field-goal attempts.

Grupe lost a training camp competition in Indianapolis to Spencer Shrader this summer.

Grupe will be the Rams’ fifth kicker in four seasons since the departure of Matt Gay, the kicker for their Super Bowl-winning team in the 2021 season.

REPORT: PATS RB TREVEYON HENDERSON OUT MULTIPLE WEEKS

New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson will be sidelined multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain, ESPN reported on Tuesday.

Henderson will not require surgery for the injury sustained in the first half of Sunday’s 45-17 home victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, and he is regarded as a “quick healer,” per the report.

The Patriots (3-2) likely will lean more heavily on starter Rhamondre Stevenson for Sunday’s AFC East clash with the New York Jets (2-3) in Foxborough, Mass. New England also has second-year running back Corey Kiner on the roster.

Henderson gained 22 yards on four carries and had one catch for 16 yards before departing with the right ankle injury. He has 163 rushing yards and one touchdown in four games this season.

A second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2025, Henderson has rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 37 passes for 243 yards and one score in 21 career games (four starts).

BEARS DE MONTEZ SWEAT SUSPENDED 2 GAMES FOR PED VIOLATION

The NFL suspended Chicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat two games without pay on Tuesday for a violation of its performance-enhancing substance policy.

Shemar Turner was activated off of the physically unable to perform list and replaces Sweat on the 53-man roster. The Bears had until Thursday to activate Turner, whose 21-day practice window opened Sept. 23.

Sweat will miss the Bears’ contest at the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday followed by a Thursday night home game against the New England Patriots. He would be eligible to return for Week 8, when the Bears visit the Seattle Seahawks on “Monday Night Football” Nov. 2.

Sweat, 30, is a one-time Pro Bowler in his third full season with the Bears. He has two sacks through five games after compiling 10 sacks a year ago.

Drafted in the first round (No. 26 overall) by Washington in 2019, Sweat was traded to the Bears in 2023, the year of his first and only Pro Bowl selection. Across 114 career games (all starts) with the two franchises, Sweat has amassed 59 sacks, 314 tackles (75 for loss), 133 quarterback hits, 15 forced fumbles, 21 pass breakups, and one interception.

Turner has been working back from a torn ACL he suffered on Oct. 26, 2025.

FLORIDA STATE BOOTS TOP ’26 RECRUIT CHUCK KENNON AFTER ONE SNAP

Florida State freshman cornerback Chuck Kennon has been dismissed from the program for conduct detrimental to the team.

Kennon was the Seminoles’ top-rated recruit in the Class of 2026 with offers from Georgia, LSU, Oregon, Miami and Florida before deciding to go to Tallahassee. But he played only one snap this season — Oct. 3 against Virginia — before Florida State removed him from the roster this week.

Kennon was a consensus four-star recruit from Bradenton, Fla., ranked No. 51 nationally and the No. 6 cornerback by 247Sports.

Florida State (3-3, 1-2 ACC) visits No. 3 Miami (5-0, 3-0) on Saturday looking to end a road losing streak that is approaching three years. The Seminoles’ last road win was on Nov. 25, 2023 at Florida.

NO. 8 BYU HOSTS NO. 2 NOTRE DAME IN FIRST-EVER TOP-10 MATCHUP IN PROVO

BYU coach Kalani Sitake knows all the usual cliches as the No. 8 Cougars prepare to take on No. 2 Notre Dame in a prime-time contest Saturday.

Every game is important. Treat every opponent the same. Block out the noise.

Yet Sitake is willing to acknowledge the truth. This game is different.

BYU (5-0) will face Notre Dame (6-0) in Provo, Utah, in a contest that could carry significant implications in the College Football Playoff standings months from now. It’s the first-ever matchup between top-10 teams in Provo.

“The coach’s talk is, ‘This is just like every other week,’” Sitake said. “Our approach is the same, but it’s a different opponent. We know they’re ranked really high. We know that they’re very talented. So the sense of urgency actually ramps up a little bit more.”

The sense of urgency is heightened for Notre Dame, as well. The Fighting Irish have knocked off each of their first six opponents by double digits, including a 58-7 thrashing against Stanford last week, but BYU is by far its toughest opponent yet.

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman knows the difficulty ahead as he prepares for kickoff. The Fighting Irish have not defeated a top-10 opponent on the road since knocking off No. 8 Oklahoma in Norman in 2012.

“It’s going to be a great challenge for us,” Freeman said. “On offense, it all starts with the quarterback. He’s a special player. He can hurt you in the run and the pass.

“Defensively, they really play hard. They do a good job of stopping the run. … It’s going to be about our preparation and how we prepare.”

The quarterback grabbing Freeman’s attention is BYU signal-caller Bear Bachmeier, who has passed for 1,033 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. He also has rushed 36 times for 239 yards and four scores.

Bachmeier’s importance is magnified by the absence of top running back LJ Martin, who is expected to miss Saturday’s contest due to a lower-leg injury sustained Oct. 3 in a win over TCU. Martin’s 344 rushing yards still lead the team.

For Notre Dame, CJ Carr will look to keep his team undefeated and strengthen his Heisman Trophy candidacy. Carr has passed for 1,378 yards, 16 touchdowns and one interception, and he has rushed for three touchdowns.

The Fighting Irish are also dealing with injuries to key players, though they hope several will be able to suit up Saturday.

Notre Dame’s top injury concern is Leonard Moore, a star cornerback who could be a high first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft. Moore is recovering from a concussion that kept him sidelined last week against Stanford, and his status against BYU is questionable.

Defensive tackle Jason Onye is also questionable for Notre Dame with an ankle injury. The Fighting Irish do expect to welcome back linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (thumb), who is no longer on the injury report.

This is the 10th all-time meeting between the programs. Notre Dame holds a 7-2 series lead and has won the past four matchups, including a 28-20 win in Las Vegas in the teams’ most recent contest in 2022.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

SEC MEDIA DAYS: MISSOURI COACH STANDING BY MARK MITCHELL IN ELIGIBILITY FIGHT

Missouri head coach Dennis Gates wasn’t scheduled to appear at the SEC’s preseason media days until Wednesday, but he got his appearance in Birmingham, Ala., changed to Tuesday for a very important reason

Gates plans to be with Mark Mitchell in court on Wednesday as the star forward attempts to gain a fifth season of NCAA eligibility.

“I am used to it. I don’t look at it like a problem,” Gates said of the Tigers’ uncertain roster three weeks away from the start of the new season. “I’ve never been given a silver spoon. I’ve always had to do more with less. I’ve always had to make decisions at the last minute, last second, but also it allows me to show that I’m talented in what I’m doing.

“I’m a CEO, not just a basketball coach. I know how to manage people, manage egos, but also manage a locker room.”

Mitchell was not selected in this summer’s NBA draft. At one point he agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Denver Nuggets, but crucially, he did not sign it.

Mitchell also attempted to transfer to Kentucky, but he soon changed course once it became clear the SEC’s rule against intraconference transfers would stand in the way, as Mitchell did not enter the portal during the appropriate window.

That didn’t make Gates think twice about singing the praises of Mitchell, who scored 18.3 points per game and shot 38.8% from 3-point range last season.

“When we were 0-19, that young man stepped foot on our campus and the last two years we were able to go to the NCAA Tournament,” Gates said. “I’ll always be there for Mark Mitchell, man, without a doubt. … It’s about stepping foot, lockstep with them every step of the way, so that they can know that they are supported.”

The Tigers could be in line for a big year. They were selected eighth in the SEC preseason media poll, on the strength of not just Mitchell but five-star freshmen Jason Crowe Jr. and Toni Bryant.

Missouri also has former DePaul leading scorer CJ Gunn in the mix, but again, the program is waiting on an eligibility ruling in his case.

“I don’t want to sign or would sign anybody that distracts or would distract our locker room,” Gates said. “So there was no cutting (players to add Mitchell and Gunn). There was no manipulation.”

–Alabama coach Nate Oats said he “couldn’t be more proud” of Aden Holloway after the former five-star prospect went through a pretrial diversion program for drug charges earlier this year.

Holloway is serving a five-game suspension to start the season — three exhibitions and two regular-season games. He was arrested just before the NCAA Tournament for felony drug possession after authorities said they recovered 2.1 pounds of marijuana from his apartment. His charges have been dismissed.

“On the Aden front, I addressed it last week, but super proud of him,” Oats said. “He’s applied himself consistently over the last few months. Did all the work required to get all the charges dropped. Back in the program I couldn’t be more proud of a young man of what he’s done over the summer and the fall so far.”

Holloway averaged 16.8 points and 3.8 assists per game and was an all-SEC selection last year.

Oats said Amari Allen will take on the role of primary ball-handler while Holloway is out.

–Mark Byington relied heavily on transfers in his first two seasons at Vanderbilt — and he’ll have two transfers with SEC experience this season, T.O. Barrett (Missouri) and Sebastian Williams-Adams (Auburn).

But Byington was excited to report that the Commodores are projected to be the second-youngest team in the power conferences this season.

“(John Calipari has) got the youngest at Arkansas, but we’re right behind them,” Byington said. “That’s something I know he’s used to, and we’re getting used to it.”

Byington said he expects to see his group’s youth when they’re up against opponents rife with fifth-year players.

“But I made a decision, in the current state of college basketball, to believe in the guys I promised something to, the guys I recruited,” Byington said. “At the same time, I think you’re going to see us continue to get better throughout the year.”

Seven freshmen are listed on Vanderbilt’s roster, including four-star recruits Ethan Mgbako, Anthony Brown and Jackson Sheffield. The Commodores were sixth in the preseason media poll, one spot behind Alabama.

–Steven Pearl is approximately one year removed from taking over for his father Bruce Pearl, who retired weeks before the 2025-26 season commenced.

Auburn narrowly missed out on the NCAA Tournament in Year 1 under the younger Pearl, but at least one of his players can see a difference entering Year 2.

“This year, it’s his team,” guard Kevin Overton said. “He put together the roster, so he can coach us how he wants… More comfortable. But his approach has always been the same. He wants to win games. You know how bad he wants to win.”

Steven Pearl, who noted that “You don’t realize how valuable an offseason is until you finally have one,” said it was a boon for his players and his program to run the table in the NIT and lift the trophy in April.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’m glad we did it,” Pearl said. “I thought it was really important as a first-year head coach to teach our guys a valuable lesson in life. When something doesn’t go your way, you can’t just quit. You’ve got to see things through. … I thought they had a lot of fun those last four games, really competing.”

–Patience may be thin in Oklahoma for Porter Moser, who was brought back for a sixth season to coach the Sooners with a promise of increased NIL funds.

The Sooners have made just one NCAA Tournament in Moser’s first five years, and the media poll picked them 12th in the 16-team league.

Moser revealed that one of his most famous conference rivals checked in on him in the middle of a rough patch last season: Arkansas’ John Calipari.

“You can listen to a lot of things,” Moser said. “I’ve known Cal for many years. I respect him so much when he says that. … Cal is one of those guys that he’s a coaching friend, man, to a lot of people, to the ones he knows and ones that he doesn’t. Everybody gets a call when things are going great. Cal is one of those guys that will text or call you and check on you when you’re not.”

Makar stayed in Colorado to be with his wife, who was expecting twins, while L’Heureux was scratched due to an upper-body injury.

NASCAR NEWS

REPORT: DODGE CLOSE TO MAKING ITS RETURN TO CUP SERIES

Dodge is “very close” to finalizing its return to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2027, The Athletic reported on Tuesday.

Negotiations are ongoing but sources said Dodge is on track to participate in the season-opening Daytona 500 on Feb. 21.

Dodge, which last raced in the Cup Series in 2012, will join Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota as the circuit’s fourth manufacturer.

Kaulig Racing, which currently fields two Chevrolets in the Cup Series, is expected to switch to Dodge, per the report. Kaulig Racing uses Ram Trucks in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and Ram Trucks and Dodge are both owned by the parent company Stellantis North America.

Dodge also is in the process of finalizing a partnership with ECR Engines to at least temporarily supply its engines for the Cup Series, per The Athletic. ECR Engines is owned by Cup Series competitor Richard Childress Racing.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Racing, told The Athletic last week that Dodge’s impending return is a “good thing” for the  sport.

“So we certainly welcome Dodge as a fourth manufacturer,” he said. “We welcome more beyond that into NASCAR. We want to compete against the best manufacturers in the world and to have more of that OEM (original engine manufacturer) rivalry on track. So certainly, if Dodge is going to come to Cup, just like Ram came to the truck, we welcome them.”

Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter discusses Josh Downs’ role on offense and how he’s seen defenses cover him that may be different from previous seasons. Cooter also touches on running back Jonathan Taylor’s production on offense and what the offensive coaching staff can do to get him back over 100 yards. Similar to Downs, Cooter has noticed defenses have approached Taylor in a more aggressive way. He also shares his observations of the Steelers defense in Week 5. Cooter was really happy with how Jalen Travis handled TJ Watt, who is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players in the league: https://www.colts.com/video/jim-bob-cooter-on-jonathan-taylor-s-production-colts-vs-titans-week-6

Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo shares his thoughts on how the Colts defense has performed the last couple weeks, as well as how players have taken accountability for mistakes. Anarumo details the tackling issues he’s seen and how the defense can fix those heading into the rest of the season. Anarumo highlights how the defense locked down Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Darnell Washington, but is aware that collectively, not enough was done. INDIANA PACERS BASKETBALL

The Pacers continued preseason action in Oklahoma City on Tuesday as they fell to the Thunder in overtime, 114-112. The contest marked Indiana’s third of four preseason games scheduled ahead of its regular season opener in New Orleans next week.

Indiana played without Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith, who were sidelined for rest purposes. Ben Sheppard and Kelly Oubre Jr. started in place of Nembhard and Nesmith, respectively. Oklahoma City played without five players, including Jaylin Williams and Chet Holmgren.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was active for the Thunder, however, and logged 15 first-half points before resting the second half. Tyrese Haliburton, Ivica Zubac, and Pascal Siakam also played just the first half as Kobe Brown, Jay Huff, and Obi Toppin started alongside Kelly Oubre Jr. and Ben Sheppard in the second.

Haliburton’s half was aggressive – he knocked down a baseline jumper and two deep 3-pointers in the opening minutes of Tuesday’s game, and went on to score 24 points in just 17 minutes. Haliburton logged three rebounds and three assists to complement his 9-of-14 shooting performance.

Zubac was active early, too. He racked up 13 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists in his 17 minutes. Zubac’s chemistry with Haliburton continues to grow as the two log minutes on the court together, and the pairing looked dangerous in their limited first-half showcase.

The duo logged a combined eight assists on Tuesday, and five of those eight assists were Haliburton to Zubac or vice versa. Zubac even connected with Siakam as the big man tossed a lob pass from the top of the key that Siakam finished at the rim.

Indiana led by as many as 20 points in the first half, and had a two-point advantage heading into the halftime break. Indiana shot 49 percent from the field, including 30 percent from 3-point range, but Oklahoma City knocked down 50 percent of its field goals. The Pacers led, 61-59, at the half with the Oklahoma City Thunder on their heels.

Huff was a bright spot for the Blue and Gold in the third frame – he connected on three of his four 3-point attempts and recorded 11 points in the quarter. The Pacers battled with the Thunder down the stretch, and trailed heading into the fourth quarter, 85-84.

Indiana trailed by one, 98-97, with just over a minute to play as Braden Smith split a pair of free throws to knot the game at 98. Brooks Barnhizer – an Indiana native – knocked down a tough bucket to put the Thunder up two, 100-98, with 35 seconds remaining in regulation. Brown made a layup through contact to tie it at 100, but missed the free throw to put the Pacers ahead by one. Time ran out on the Thunder, and the game went into overtime tied at 100.

The Pacers battled throughout the overtime period – Rienk Mast was 2-for-2 from deep in the extra five minutes – but couldn’t overcome the Thunder’s offensive firepower. Indiana fell to the Thunder, 114-112, in overtime.

The Pacers shot 43 percent from the field in Tuesday’s loss, including 30 percent from the 3-point arc. Oklahoma City was an efficient 48 percent from the field and 36 percent from deep. Indiana played 15 players and had five reach double figure scoring totals – Haliburton, Zubac, Oubre, Brown, and Huff.

Inside the Numbers

The Pacers grabbed 63 rebounds against the Thunder. That’s more total rebounds than all but one of their games in the 2025-26 season.

Three Pacers recorded a team-high five assists – Ivica Zubac, Quenton Jackson, and Braden Smith.

Indiana outrebounded Oklahoma City 63-39. Six Pacers grabbed five or more rebounds.

Tyrese Haliburton and Ivica Zubac combined to record eight assists. Five of those eight assists were to each other.

You Can Quote Me on That

“Just the approach. Coming back in here and being really undaunted by anything that’s happened in the past. He just came and played his game, and he was Tyrese Haliburton.” – Coach Rick Carlisle on his impression of Tyrese Haliburton

“I wanted to play just to get some game reps and just kind of rip the bandaid off. You know, get it out of the way. I thought I would feel maybe a little more emotion coming in there, you know. I don’t know, sadness or scared or whatever. Once the ball jumped up, it felt like normal.” – Haliburton on returning to Paycom Center after 2025 Achilles injury

“He’s got great feel. He’s got a lot of skill. He’s got power, size. His screening is something that’s going to be a major plus for us. And he’s adjusting to a different style of play and a different group of players…There will continue to be adjustments as we go, but he was terrific in this game.” – Carlisle on Ivica Zubac

“If you’re looking for a positive progression, you know throughout training camp and as the games have gone forward, this is what we all expected. We expected him to get stronger each game – better rhythm, better conditioning, all those kinds of things. You know, it’s been a 16-month period, which is a generous period of time for rehab, but it’s long and arduous. So getting back into the games is exciting, as he has said. But things move fast. I thought the game slowed down tonight for him, and it was great to see.” – Carlisle on Haliburton’s progression and adjustments as he returns to play

Stat of the Night

The Pacers committed 28 total turnovers. Oklahoma City had just 16 turnovers, but scored 33 points off Indiana’s miscues.

The Pacers have one remaining preseason contest – they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday, October 16.

Indiana will clash with Oklahoma City twice this season. The first regular season meeting will be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on November 23, and the second will be back at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center on February 5.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With back-to-back Big Ten wins, Purdue Football looks to keep the train rolling as it welcomes Washington to Ross-Ade Stadium for a Friday night matchup. The primetime kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on FOX. w

QUICK HITS

The Boilermakers are playing their fifth home game through the first seven games of the season, including the second Friday night contest.

Markus Bailey (2015-19), a four-year starting linebacker who went on to play five seasons in the NFL, will serve as Purdue’s honorary captain for Friday’s game.

Purdue is 3-0 this season when allowing less than 20 points. The Boilermakers limited Illinois to 17 points, while keeping Minnesota to 13 points to secure back-to-back victories.

The Boilermakers’ 28-point win over Minnesota was their largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game since beating Indiana 44-7 in the 2021 Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket.

Purdue’s three losses have been to opponents with a combined record of 16-1 and all ranked in the Top 25 (No. 2 Notre Dame: 6-0, No. 12 UCLA: 5-0, No. 21 Wake Forest: 5-1).

Fame Ijeboi leads the Purdue rushing attack, ranking second in the Big Ten and fifth nationally with nine rushing touchdowns. In the win over Minnesota, he became the fifth rusher in the country to produce a game of at least 195 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. His 195 rushing yards were the most by a Boilermaker since 2017 and the 15th most all-time.

The Boilermakers are outscoring opponents 47-27 in the third quarter this season.

While Purdue ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 19th nationally in passing offense, the Boilermakers racked up 305 rushing yards in the win over Minnesota. It was their highest output on the ground since rushing for 353 yards against Minnesota in 2023.

Jacobo Echeverria Lozano leads the Big Ten and ranks second in the country with 13 made field goals, the second most by a freshman kicker in program history. He is 13-for-14 on the year with a long of 48 yards.

HONORARY CAPTAIN

Markus Bailey (2015-19), a four-year starting linebacker for the Boilermakers before spending five seasons in the NFL, will serve as Purdue’s honorary captain for Friday night’s matchup.

Bailey recorded 327 tackles throughout his Purdue career, ranking 14th in program history. His 229 solo tackles rank 11th all-time.

He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, spending four seasons with the team and helping them reach Super Bowl LVI.

Bailey played for the Arizona Cardinals during the 2024 campaign, his final season in the NFL.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

In 139 seasons of Purdue Football, the Boilermakers have played on Fridays 17 times throughout history, recording a 6-10-1 record. Ten of those games have been night games and only five have been in Ross-Ade Stadium.

Purdue kicked off this season with a Friday night victory over Indiana State, 44-19. The on-field temperature reached 93 degrees, with a real feel of 103, the hottest recorded night game at Ross-Ade Stadium this century.

The 2026 campaign marks the second time in the past three years that the Boilermakers have played two Friday games in a season.

BACK-2-BACK B1G WINS

Purdue improved to 2-1 in Big Ten play with back-to-back victories over Illinois (24-17) and Minnesota (41-13), thanks to strong play on both sides of the ball.

Averaging more than 400 yards of total offense, the Boilermakers proved they can win with both the passing game and the ground game. Ryan Browne’s arm led the way in Purdue’s win at Illinois, while the Boilermakers racked up 305 rushing yards in the victory over Minnesota.

Defensively, Purdue limited the B1G foes to 15 points per game. Both quarterbacks were held to less than 250 passing yards, completing only 57 percent of their throws. The run defense surrendered just 147 yards.

Purdue ran for 305 rushing yards compared to Minnesota’s 27. The 278-yard margin is the largest by Purdue since 2014 at Illinois. It is also the third-largest margin between two power conference schools this year.

A DOMINANT VICTORY

Purdue dominated all three phases of the game in the 41-13 win over Minnesota, the Boilermakers’ largest margin of victory since beating Indiana 44-7 for the Old Oaken Bucket in 2021.

The Purdue defense limited the Golden Gophers to only 27 rushing yards, the fewest rushing yards allowed by the Boilermakers in a Big Ten game since 2004 (18 – Penn State).

Minnesota converted just 10 first downs in the game, the fewest allowed by a Purdue defense since 2017 against Rutgers. The Gophers did not convert a single rushing first down, the first time a Purdue defense has accomplished this since at least 1995. It was just the fourth time since 1995 that a Big Ten team held another Big Ten team to 10 or fewer first down conversions with 0 rushing first down conversions.

Offensively, the Boilermakers ran for 305 yards for their highest rushing output since recording 353 rushing yards in the 2023 victory over Minnesota. On the second drive of the game, Purdue put together a season-long 98-yard scoring drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock; it was the team’s second scoring drive of at least 95 yards this season (95 at UCLA).

For special teams, Jacobo Echeverria Lozano was perfect, connecting on field goals from 45 yards and 28 yards while making all five PATs. The kickoff coverage unit forced Minnesota to start drives on the nine and 14-yard lines off of kickoffs in the first half, and in the fourth quarter, the Boilermakers forced a muffed punt.

JOJO’S MOJO

In his first season as a Boilermaker, junior linebacker Jojo Hayden has become one of the leaders of the defense.

He paces Purdue in tackles (40) and has been the team’s leading tackler in the last two games, both Boilermaker victories.

Against Minnesota, Hayden tallied a team-high seven tackles and also hauled in his first career interception.

Hayden’s 91.2 run defense grade ranked seventh in the FBS and his 85.1 defensive grade was 21st overall in the FBS in Week 6, both career highs.

THE FAME GAME

Going up against his former team, Fame Ijeboi produced the best game of his career and delivered a historical performance.

The sophomore running back had career highs in carries (31), rushing yards (195) and rushing touchdowns (3), racking up the most rushing yards by a Boilermaker since Markell Jones in 2017 (217 vs. Indiana) and the 15th-most all-time.

According to PFF, he forced 18 missed tackles, the most missed tackles forced in a game since Ashton Jeanty (Boise State) versus San Diego State in 2024 and the most in a Big Ten game since Blake Corum (Michigan) had 24 versus Michigan State in 2022.

Ijeboi became just the fourth Boilermaker since 1995 to record at least 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a game, the first since Montrell Lowe in 2000 (208 rushing yards, 4 TDs vs. Indiana).

EASLEY’S MONEY IN PASS PRO

After not starting the first two weeks of the season, Marques Easley took over in game three against UCLA and has produced one of the best pass blocking campaigns nationally this season.

Easley’s 87.3 pass blocking grade ranks sixth by a Power Four offensive lineman (minimum 100 pass blocking snaps) since he took over as Purdue’s starting left guard in Week 3, according to PFF.

In 154 pass blocking snaps this season, he owns a 99.5 percent pass blocking efficiency that ranks tied for 16th by a Power Four offensive lineman and seventh by a Power Four guard (minimum 150 pass blocking snaps).

Expanding to the entire FBS, Easley’s efficiency ranks 28th among offensive lineman and 12th among guards.

• He has allowed just one quarterback pressure and one hurry.

HE’S YA BOY, IJEBOI

Fame Ijeboi has made an immediate impact for Purdue after transferring from Minnesota, becoming one of the leaders on the offensive side of the ball.

With 549 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the year, he ranks second in the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally in rushing touchdowns.

He is one rushing TD away from becoming the 22nd Boilermaker to record double-digit rushing touchdowns in a season. He has a pair of three-touchdown games this season, the first Boilermaker to accomplish the feat since Kory Sheets in 2008.

Ijeboi had the best game of his career against his former team, running for 195 yards and three scores to lead Purdue to a 28-point win over Minnesota. It was the 15th-best rushing game in terms of yardage in program history as well as the most by a Boilermaker since 2017. He became the second Boilermaker this century to total at least 195 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Against Wake Forest, Ijeboi finished with 114 rushing yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns. Ijeboi also added six receptions for 42 yards. Finding the end zone three times, he became the first Boilermaker with three rushing touchdowns in a game since D.J. Knox helped Purdue knock off No. 2 Ohio State in the famous Tyler Trent Game (Oct. 20, 2018).

In his first game as a Boilermaker, Ijeboi racked up 87 yards and a touchdown while averaging a staggering 7.9 yards per carry to help Purdue roll past Indiana State.

O-LINE PROTECTING QB1

The offensive line, which changed configurations after week two and again after week four, has found a new groove over the past two weeks.

Purdue’s pass blocking has not allowed a sack in back-to-back games for the first time since playing Minnesota (Nov. 20) and Rutgers (Nov. 28) in 2020.

According to PFF, Marques Easley and Micah Banuelos tied for the team lead with an 85.3 pass blocking grade against Minnesota.

Banuelos has now topped 85.0 in pass blocking in three of the last four games, while Easley has topped 80.0 in three of the last four.

• Nuku Mafi added an 81.3 in pass protection for his highest grade as a Boilermaker and the second-highest of his career.

B1G TIME PASSER

Ryan Browne has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football, ranking in the Top 20 in passing yards (14th-1,549), completions (25th-20.7 per game) and completion percentage (24th-68.9%).

He is just one of two quarterbacks in the nation (Lincoln Kienholz – Louisville) with at least 1,500 yards passing, a completion percentage over 68 percent and one or fewer interceptions this season.

Throwing only one interception on the year, Browne is the only Purdue starting quarterback since at least 1970 to toss just one or fewer interceptions through the first six games of a season.

Surpassing 300 passing yards in each of the first three contests, Browne joined Jim Everett (1985, twice), Drew Brees (1998, 1999), Kyle Orton (2004), Curtis Painter (2007), David Blough (2018) and Aidan O’Connell (2021, 2022) as the only Purdue quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in three straight games.

Browne has six 300-yard passing games for his career, tied with Scott Campbell (1980-83) for eighth on the all-time charts.

PURDUE MEN’S GOLF

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Will Harvey and Jenson Forrester recorded top-5 finishes and Purdue held off a mid-third round charge by Toledo to win the Purdue Fall Invitational for the second straight year.

The Boilermakers totaled a 54-hole total of 4-under par 1,076 (357-358-361) to defeat a strong Toledo squad by eight shots. Ball State was third at 16-over par 1,096, while Indiana and Northern Illinois rounded out the top five.

The tournament featured “play 6, count 5” scoring instead of the usual “play 5, count 4” scoring that most college golf tournaments use. The reasoning was to get more players on the counting teams instead of playing as individuals.

The win was Purdue’s first of the season and marked the second straight season that Purdue has won the event. The Boilermakers have now registered a tournament victory in six straight seasons, matching the longest streak in school history (1958-63). It marked the fifth win in the third season under head coach Andrew Sapp.

It wasn’t easy in Tuesday’s final round as Toledo whittled the lead to three shots midway through the third round, before the Boilermakers righted the ship and made several key birdies down the stretch to put some distance between them and the Rockets.

Leading the Boilermakers was sophomore Will Harvey, who recorded his third career top-five finish, placing fourth at 5-under par 211 (71-70-70). Harvey played the final 10 holes in 2-under par, posting birdies on 15 and 16 to record his best finish of the year. He now has three top-20 finishes on the year.

Jenson Forrester had another strong tournament, placing tied for fifth at 4-under par 212 (70-68-74). Forrester started slow, making bogeys on two of his first three holes, before making pars on 15 straight holes to end his round. It marked his second top-five finish of the year.

Andre Zhu had his best tournament of the fall, finishing tied for 12th at even-par 216 (69-75-72). Zhu bogeyed his first hole of the day, birdied number11 (9th hole of the day), and made 16 pars.

Micah Sheffer finished 28th at 5-over par 221 (77-72-72), while Supapon Amornchaichan was tied for 29th at 6-over par 222 (71-73-78) and Sam Easterbrook tied for 35th at 8-over par 224 (76-75-73).

Playing as an individual, Toku Fujiwara was tied for 44th at 10-over par 226 (75-74-77).

Purdue will end the fall season on Oct. 26 to 28 at the Ka’Anapali Classic in Lahaina, Hawai’i

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Marcus Freeman has been named to the 2026 Dodd Trophy Midseason Watch List. The Dodd Trophy celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy.

The award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field. Freeman, who won the award in 2024, is one of four previous Dodd Trophy winners on the watch list, joining Curt Cignetti (2025), Willie Fritz (2022) and Kirk Ferentz (2015).

Notre Dame (6-0) is ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Irish lead the nation in total defense, allowing just 214.2 yards per game – more than 25 yards fewer than the next-closest team. Notre Dame is also allowing just 11.0 points per game, the fewest among teams that have faced at least four Power Four opponents this season. Offensively, the Irish rank fourth nationally in scoring, averaging 44.0 points per game. Notre Dame has outscored its opponents by 198 points through six games, the second-best scoring differential in the country.

Freeman owns a 49-12 record as a head coach and has led Notre Dame to 16 consecutive double-digit victories, dating back to Sept. 20, 2025. The streak is the longest active run of double-digit wins in the FBS and the longest in program history, while ranking tied for third all-time in college football history.

Freeman entered the 2026 season after leading the Irish to a 10-2 record, with a final Associated Press ranking of No. 10. He coached 2025 Heisman Trophy finalist Jeremiyah Love while also having two players earn Unanimous All-American honors in Love and Leonard Moore. Under Freeman’s leadership in 2025, Love was named Notre Dame’s first-ever Doak Walker Award winner, which honors college football’s top running back. Additionally, Moore was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award for the national defensive player of the year and also the Thorpe Award for college football’s top defensive back.

###############

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – True freshman running back Jonaz Walton has been named the Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week following his record-breaking performance in Notre Dame’s 58-7 win over Stanford on Saturday.

Walton rushed for a Notre Dame true freshman-record 181 yards on just 13 carries (13.9 yards per carry), surpassing Josh Adams’ 168-yard performance at Stanford on Nov. 28, 2015. His 181 rushing yards were the most by a freshman nationally this past weekend, while his 13.9 yards per carry led all FBS players with a minimum of 10 attempts.

On the first play of the second quarter against the Cardinal, Walton broke through the line of scrimmage and raced 97 yards for a touchdown, the first score of his career. The run was the third-longest play in Notre Dame Stadium history and the second-longest rush by an Irish true freshman in program history. It also marked the fifth touchdown run of 90 or more yards by an Irish running back at Notre Dame Stadium since 2015. Walton finished with two rushing touchdowns on the day, adding a 40-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

Walton became the fifth Irish true freshman since 1972 to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games and the first since Josh Adams in 2015, after rushing for 120 yards against North Carolina the previous week.

Walton finished with a team-high 209 total yards, adding two receptions for 28 yards. His 209 total yards surpassed Stanford’s team total of 202 yards of offense. Walton also earned a 90.1 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF), the second-highest mark among all running backs over the weekend.

Walton’s breakout performance helped fuel a dominant Notre Dame effort, as the Irish extended their winning streak to 16 consecutive games decided by double digits, dating back to Sept. 20, 2025. The streak is the longest active in the FBS and the longest in program history, while ranking tied for the third-longest in college football history.

Walton and the second-ranked Irish hit the road Saturday for a top-10 showdown against eighth-ranked BYU. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

NOTRE DAME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

CHARLOTTE – The ACC announced its 2026-27 preseason awards on Tuesday, with Hannah Hidalgo earning ACC Preseason Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, as voted on by the league’s coaches and media.

Freshman Jacy Abii also earned preseason conference recognition, as the Dallas, Texas, native was named to the Preseason All-Freshman Team.

Coming off a junior season in which she earned Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year and WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year honors, along with the Nancy Lieberman Award, ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year awards, Hidalgo enters her senior season at Notre Dame as one of the nation’s premier players.

Hidalgo earned ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season in 2026, becoming the first player in conference history to win both awards in back-to-back seasons.

Hidalgo put together one of the most statistically dominant seasons in college basketball history a year ago. She led the ACC in scoring at 25.3 points per game and the nation in steals at 5.6 per game, while averaging 6.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per contest. She is the only men’s or women’s college basketball player this century to average at least 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals per game. Her 202 steals set an NCAA single-season record.

Hidalgo has also joined an exclusive group of four major-conference players this century to record at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 400 steals in a career: Alana Beard (Duke), Shernise Johnson (Miami) and Armintie Price (Ole Miss). Hidalgo is the first to reach those milestones before completing her junior season.

Preseason All-Freshman Team – Jacy Abii

Abii arrives in South Bend as one of the nation’s top incoming freshmen. A five-star recruit, she was ranked the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2026 ESPNW SC NEXT 100 and named a 2026 McDonald’s All-American.

Abii also brings extensive international experience with USA Basketball, averaging 8.3 points per game at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup. She was previously a member of the United States team that competed at the 2023 FIBA U16 Women’s AmeriCup.

Notre Dame opens the season with an exhibition against Truman State on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. ET inside Purcell Pavilion before beginning the regular season against Villanova at noon ET on Nov. 1 at the Eternal City Tip-Off in Rome.

BUTLER MEN’S GOLF

Logan Sutto and Nicholas Brooks led the way as the Bulldogs tied for seventh at the Purdue Fall Invitational, which concluded Tuesday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Sutto finished eighth in the field at three-under 213, posting three rounds at par or better.

IU INDY MEN’S SOCCER

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The IU Indianapolis men’s soccer team’s non-conference schedule came to a close on Tuesday (Oct. 13) with a 2-0 road loss at Bellarmine. Head coach Keegan Boom opted to rest some key starters and provide some extended minutes to reserves in preparation for the close of the Horizon League schedule. Bellarmine (6-2-4) scored a pair of second half goals and also unloaded their bench in the win.

“Overall, the performance today was fantastic for 85 of the 90 minutes,” Boom said. “The boys battled hard, created lots of shots and had lots of the ball in dangerous areas. The different today was two set pieces where we were not good enough and it ultimately cost us. We were able to go young today with nine freshmen playing good minutes as we prepare for an important match against Milwaukee on Saturday.”

Bellarmine’s Martin Cadagan netted the game-winner in the 47th minute and Colin Mackey added an insurance goal from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute to account for the day’s scoring. Mackey had previously assisted on Cadagan’s goal as part of a three-point performance.

The Jaguars earned a penalty kick in the 60th minute, but senior Jose Antonio Herrera had his attempt stopped by Bellarmine keeper Benny Howard. Later, Thomas Weinrich and Herrera each had shot attempts blocked that resulted in corner kicks in the 73rd and 74th minutes, but neither restart resulted in shot attempts.

IU Indy outshot Bellarmine 8-5 in the opening half, but saw the hosts race to a 14-6 second half shot margin and 19-14 advantage for the game. Only three of the Jaguars’ 14 attempts were on frame.

Freshman Vicente Silva made his second start of the season and registered eight saves. Only Silva, Luke Gonda, Jayden Quezada and Luke Kegerreis played all 90 minutes as 19 different Jaguars saw playing time. Herrera finished with a team-high three shot attempts and Weinrich added two.

The Jaguars will return home to host Milwaukee in Horizon League play on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

IU INDY MEN’S GOLF

KENNESAW, Ga. – The IU Indianapolis men’s golf team finished off a third-place finish at this week’s Scrappy at Pinetree on Tuesday (Oct. 13), carding a final round, 2-over 290 at Pinetree Country Club. The Jaguars climbed four spots on the tournament’s final day and posted the second best score of the field on Tuesday, behind only host Kennesaw State. IU Indy finished the tournament at 876 (301-285-290), shaking off a rough opening round to earn a third-place finish.

Senior Brady Schier finished tied for seventh among the 69-player field at 1-over 217 (78-68-71) for the week, recording a second straight round of par or better.

“I didn’t get off to a great start to the tournament. I wasn’t hitting my driver straight and had some bad three putts and had a very below average first round,” Schier said. “I was hitting my irons well though, so that gave me some confidence. I put my driver away for the rest of the tournament and got some putts to go in to start the second round and rode that momentum for the rest of the tournament and tried to make as many birdies as I could.

“The last day was a grind. I hit it well, but had some really bad bogeys scattered throughout the round, so I had to just keep my head down and make some birdies down the stretch to keep me under par.”

Schier was at or under par throughout his final round, making birdie on his third hole as part of a five birdie round. He finished the tournament second overall with 14 birdies, trailing only Alabama’s Michael Crocker’s 18.

Senior Titus Boswell shot 2-under 70 on Tuesday with five birdies, playing his opening 11 holes bogey free. Ultimately, Boswell finished tied for 15th overall at 219 (76-73-70) for the week, concluding the tournament with his 100th career collegiate round.

Freshman Tommy Klinker shot 2-over 74 and Keaton Parmley shot 3-over 75. Freshman Nathan Springer, who led the team after 36 holes, posted a final round, 5-over 77 to finish tied for 27th overall at 221 (73-71-77).

Host Kennesaw State won the tournament at 863 and UT Martin was second at 871. Georgia State’s Cameron Jackson collected medalist honors at 5-under 211, clearing Crocker by a single shot for the tournament win.

The Jaguars will close out the fall on Oct. 19-20 when they compete at the Xavier Invitational at Maketewah Country Club.

INDIANA STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Indiana State continues Missouri Valley Conference play on Thursday night as the Sycamores travel to Chicago for a 7 p.m. matchup against UIC.

ISU enters the contest at 7-2-4 overall and 2-1-1 in MVC action after battling Drake to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, while the Flames sit at 1-9-2 overall and 0-4 in league play following a 1-0 loss to Murray State.

The Sycamores continued to show their resilience against one of the Valley’s top teams last weekend, earning a hard-fought point in a match that showcased the program’s growth and competitiveness. Indiana State matched Drake’s intensity throughout the afternoon and remained composed in key moments, responding after falling behind to keep the match level. The result marked another strong performance against one of the MVC’s top contenders and extended ISU’s stretch of consistent play in conference action.

Indiana State has continued to establish itself as one of the league’s most balanced teams through the opening portion of the conference schedule. The Sycamores have earned points in three of their first four MVC matches and currently sit fourth in the conference standings. ISU’s success has been fueled by contributions throughout the lineup, from a disciplined defensive unit anchored by goalkeeper Sofie Hansen to an attack that has consistently found ways to generate quality chances. The Sycamores have shown the ability to compete in a variety of match situations, whether controlling possession, protecting leads, or responding to adversity.

UIC enters Thursday’s contest looking for its first conference victory of the season. The Flames most recently dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Murray State and currently stand 10th in the MVC standings. UIC has continued to battle throughout conference play and will be looking to capitalize on the advantage of playing at home.

For Indiana State, Thursday’s matchup presents another opportunity to build momentum in the Valley race. The Sycamores have positioned themselves among the conference contenders through the first half of the season and will look to continue their strong form against a UIC squad searching for points. With confidence growing and conference play becoming increasingly important, ISU heads to Chicago intent on adding another positive result to its impressive 2026 campaign.

Live stats for Thursday’s match will be available on GoSycamores.com, and the contest will stream live on ESPN+ for fans unable to attend.

VALPO MEN’S BASKETBALL

The 2026-27 Valparaiso University men’s basketball team is picked to finish fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference, according to a preseason survey of the league’s head coaches, athletic communications staff members and media members that was released on Tuesday.

This marks the highest Valpo has been voted in the league’s preseason poll since joining the MVC prior to the 2017-18 season. Previously, the team’s highest Valley preseason projection was sixth of 10 in 2017-18, the team’s first year in the league. Valpo far exceeded preseason expectations last season, when the Beacons were voted last in the preseason poll for the second time in three years, but instead finished tied for sixth, one game out of a tie for third.

KenPom.com released its preseason data earlier this week, and Valpo is rated 140th nationally and fifth in the MVC, according to KenPom metrics. Last season, Valpo had a preseason KenPom rating of 284. The 144-place jump from the beginning of last season to the beginning of this season ranks fifth nationally in terms of largest improvement in Preseason KenPom rating. In addition, Valpo’s preseason KenPom rating of 140 is the program’s highest preseason rating since 2018-19 (132).

The MVC will release its Preseason Players to Watch List on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The league’s Preseason Media Day is set for this Wednesday, Oct. 14 in St. Louis with sophomore JT Pettigrew (Lisle, Ill. / Bolingbrook), sophomore Rakim Chaney (Rockford, Ill. / Rockford Auburn / 212 Sports Academy) and junior Justus McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West) representing the Beacons along with head coach Roger Powell Jr.

More on the Program’s Forward Momentum

The team went 11-9 in league action last year, nearly doubling its conference win total for a second straight season, notching the team’s first-ever winning season in Valley play. Overall, Valpo won 18 games including 17 regular-season contests in 2025-26, the program’s highest regular-season win total since its final season in the Horizon League in 2016-17. The Beacons enjoyed their first winning season overall since 2019-20 and featured a 13-4 mark at the Athletics-Recreation Center, their highest home win total since 2016-17.

Last year, Valpo exceeded expectations, finishing just one game out of a tie for third in a tightly-packed league after being picked last in the 11-team conference’s preseason poll. Valpo ranked 325th nationally in Division-I experience prior to the 2025-26 season and finished the regular season at 150 in the KenPom after beginning at 283, a jump of 133 spots that was the fourth-largest improvement nationally.

Arnstrom-Bakker paced the Screaming Eagles with a 3-under-par 213 (70-68-75). The performance marked his second sub-par tournament score this fall and his third straight top-10 finish. Overall, it was the third tournament score under par by a Screaming Eagle this year.

Arnstrom-Bakker led the second-round charge with a 4-under 68 that included seven birdies and shooting in red numbers on both nines. It was Arnstrom-Bakker’s second round of 68 this fall, matching the team’s best 18-hole score this year. Wangrungwichaisri shot an even-par 72 in the second round after a steady back nine that included an eagle on hole 10 for the second consecutive round. USI had the most eagles in the field with five, and Arnstrom-Bakker and Wangrungwichaisri tied for the second-most with two each. Sophomore Weston Hardy put forth a solid effort in round two with a 1-over-par 73 with four birdies.

Junior Alex Peck turned in his best round of the tournament with a 2-over 74. Meanwhile, Arnstrom-Bakker finished a 3-over 75 despite notching four birdies. The hometown call featuring Todd Ickow (36th season, play-by-play) and Brandon Vickrey (11th season, analyst) will be available on WVUR 95.1 FM Valparaiso and the TuneIn Radio app. For in-game updates, follow @valpoufootball on Instagram and X. Links to live video and stats can be found on ValpoAthletics.com. This season, nine of the 11 games will be on ESPN+ with the remaining two games airing on YouTube.

With a Win on Saturday, Valpo Would…

Own a three-game winning streak for the first time since the 2003 season. Valpo had two separate three-game winning streaks during the league-championship season of 2003, including wins over Dayton, San Diego and Drake in October. The program has not won three straight in 23 years entering this weekend.

Own wins in consecutive road games for the first time since 2022 (at Presbyterian, at Morehead State).

End a 10-game road losing streak to the Toreros, winning in San Diego for the first time since 2000.

Improve to 3-1 through four PFL games for the first time since 2022.

Secure a fourth overall win, tying with 2024 for the team’s highest overall win total since 2022.

Own a winning record through seven games for the first time since 2022 and for just the second time since 2007.

Allow head coach Andy Waddle to tie for the most wins by a Valpo head coach in his first or second season since 1978. He would tie Landon Fox’s four wins in Spring 2021 (second season) and Dave Cecchini’s four wins in 2014 (first season) for the most by a first- or second-year Valpo head coach since Bill Koch won five games in his second season in 1978.

Beat the Preseason PFL favorite for the first time since a 20-19 victory over San Diego on April 17, 2021.

Own wins over the top two teams in the PFL preseason poll for the first time since 2003.

With the Win Over Drake, Valpo…

Has wins over Drake and Morehead State in the same season for the first time since 2003.

Defeated a team that was 27-2 in its previous 29 Pioneer Football League contests.

Beat Drake at Brown Field for the first time since 2003, snapping an 11-game home losing streak to the Bulldogs.

Ended Drake’s 15-game PFL road winning streak, handing the Bulldogs their first road loss in league play since Oct. 15, 2022 at St. Thomas.

Has back-to-back wins within the same season for the first time since September 2024 (Indiana Wesleyan and Roosevelt).

Has back-to-back league wins within the same season for the first time since 2023 (Dayton and Stetson).

Holds a winning record in league play for the first time since 2022.

Has surpassed its league and overall win totals from last season.

Team of the Week

Following the Oct. 10 victory over Drake, Valpo was named the FCS National Team of the Week by Stats Perform.

This marked the first time since Oct. 30, 2017 that the program earned that high honor.

Scouting the Toreros

Voted as the preseason favorite to win the Pioneer Football League.

Beat Davidson 63-14 in its lone PFL home game to date, but lost 50-17 at St. Thomas and 41-10 at Butler.

Picked up a 38-35 nonconference win at Cal Poly on Sept. 19.

Coming off an 8-4 overall record and 6-2 conference mark last season.

Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Brandon Moore.

VALPO WOMEN’S GOLF

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team cracked the program record book in Round 3 for a second consecutive tournament, as the Beacons closed out Missouri State’s Payne Stewart Memorial with a strong showing at the par-71, 6141-yard Twin Oaks Country Club on Tuesday.

How It Happened

The team’s Round-3 score of 300 (+16) ranked fifth in the 12-team field. This helped the Beacons climb to ninth on the team leaderboard by finishing the tournament with a 933 (+81).

The Round-3 score ranks fourth in program history in 18-hole round overall score. Two of the top four rounds in the program record book have come this season. In relation to par, the Round-3 team score also ranks fourth in the record book.

The team’s 54-hole tournament score of 933 ranks sixth in program history, the second time in as many tournaments that the team has cracked the all-time top 10. In relation to par, this week’s showing is tied for sixth all-time.

Seniors Keira Cotter (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Guelph [Lake Superior State]) and Katelyn McCoy (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) led the team in Round 3. Cotter, who golfed a career-low round, shot a 2-over 73, rising 12 spots on the player leaderboard to finish tied for 38th of 66 with a team-best 233. She had four birdies on the day and shot a 2-under 33 on the front nine. Cotter’s 73 is tied for ninth in program history in 18-hole overall score.

McCoy posted a 74 (+3) in Round 3, establishing a new personal best. She climbed 10 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 47th at 238.

Freshman Olivia Bailey (Rochester, Ind. / Rochester Community) had the team’s second-best tournament score at 237. She shot a 76 (+5) on Tuesday, her best round of the tournament. Sophomore Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) also had her best round of the week with a 77 on Tuesday.

Oral Roberts shot 875 to take the team crown, while Missouri State’s Clementina Castano shot an even-par 213 to capture medalist honors.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“It’s exciting to see some great rounds starting to fall into place! Keira and Katelyn did a great job leading the team today. And Katie and Olivia added to the move up the leaderboard with some solid golf too!”
