WILLIAM CONTRERAS SPARKS BREWERS’ GAME 2 RALLY AGAINST DODGERS

MILWAUKEE — The team with the best record in the major leagues continues to hand it to the best team money can buy as the Milwaukee Brewers moved two victories away from their first World Series appearance in more than 40 years.

The Brewers’ latest statement came in a 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series as their quest for revenge is halfway to completion.

The Dodgers swept last year’s NLCS by outscoring the Brewers 15-4 on the way to a second consecutive title.

William Contreras delivered a game-tying home run in the fifth inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth as the Brewers took their 2-0 lead in this NLCS while piling on 12 hits.

Contreras drove in a run with each of his three hits while Christian Yelich drove in a pair of runs.

The series shifts to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Wednesday.

“Our mentality is to stay focused,” Contreras said through an interpreter on the FOX broadcast. “It doesn’t matter what the state of the game is, if we’re ahead, we’re behind. We’re going to stay on the aggression and stay focused. I think we have been able to do a really good job of that as a team.”

Four Milwaukee relievers retired all 15 batters they faced with JoJo Romero (1-1) earning the win with a 1-2-3 sixth and Aaron Ashby picking up his first save of the postseason with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The bullpen recorded seven of the Brewers’ nine strikeouts.

Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez each had an RBI for the Dodgers, who did not score any runs with the aid of a base hit. They were limited to three hits for the game.

Freeman and Hernandez each had a sacrifice fly while Los Angeles scored a pair of runs on two Logan Henderson throwing errors.

Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout over 75 pitches. Henderson gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks in four innings for the Brewers.

Unable to catch the Brewers down the stretch of the regular season and secure home-field advantage over Milwaukee, Los Angeles now heads home for potentially three games with a chance to get back into the series.

“Yeah, it’s certainly a challenge,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who will have Blake Snell on the mound Wednesday. “I think that, if you look at Game 3, I like where we’re at as far as in a vacuum, who’s pitching, where our bullpen is at, being at home. … But as far as can we do it? Absolutely. You want to get that first one.”

Hernandez gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the first with a flyout to center that scored Mookie Betts. Contreras tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single.

The Dodgers moved in front 2-1 in the third when Henderson’s wild pickoff throw to first base allowed Tommy Edman to score from third. The Brewers loaded the bases in their half of the third when Jake Bauers worked a 12-pitch walk against Yamamoto.

Two pitches later, Yelich lined a two-run single to center for a 3-2 lead, ending Yamamoto’s day.

“I was trying to work on the edge of the zone, and some pitches were really good, but he just stayed on it,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter of his pivotal two-out duel with Bauers. “He did a good job.”

The Dodgers tied the score 3-3 in the fifth when Henderson’s throw to first on an Edman bunt was wild, which allowed Kyle Tucker to score. Freeman added his sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead later in the inning.

Contreras crushed a home run to center off Kris Bubic in the fifth to tie the score and added a single to left off Brock Stewart (0-1) in the sixth to score David Hamilton with what became the winning run. Brice Turang and Bauers each had RBI singles in the eighth for a 7-4 lead.

“You come into spring training expecting to be in this series and most likely playing these guys,” Yelich said. “So I don’t think it caught anybody by surprise. We’ve been a confident group all year. And know that if we play clean, we play our game, we can hang with anybody.

“We didn’t really play clean in a lot of our game today, but it’s a credit to the guys for overcoming that.”

LATE OFFENSE SENDS GUARDIANS TO ALCS GAME 1 WIN OVER RAYS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Cleveland Guardians made up for a slow start by racing to a strong finish in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

Nathaniel Lowe ripped a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning, lifting the Guardians to a 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

The Guardians scored seven runs over the final four innings and finished with 14 hits in the opener of the best-of-seven series.

Cleveland has erupted for 25 runs in three postseason road contests heading into Game 2 on Tuesday in St. Petersburg.

With the game tied at 2-2, Jose Ramirez reached on an infield single to lead off the eighth against Tyler Wells (0-1). Ramirez advanced to third base on a double from rookie Chase DeLauter. One out later, Lowe plated both with a line-drive single to center field on an 0-2 pitch from Ian Seymour.

Ramirez drove in a run in the ninth inning, giving him four straight playoff games with an RBI — tied for the longest postseason streak in franchise history with Sandy Alomar (1997) and Jim Thome (1998-99).

“Cleveland is everything to me,” Ramirez told TNT Sports through an interpreter. “When nobody wanted to give me a chance, they gave me a chance. This is the place I love, and they love me back.”

Ramirez joined DeLauter in collecting three hits apiece. Both players scored on Jo Adell’s two-run double in the ninth, helping Cleveland hand Tampa Bay its first loss since a 7-3 setback against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 27.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve lost,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “That’s a good thing. I know the guys will come back and respond tomorrow.”

The late uprising made a winner out of Hunter Gaddis (1-0), who allowed one hit over one scoreless inning. The Cleveland bullpen delivered five innings of one-run ball.

DeLauter homered to lead off the sixth inning and Patrick Bailey did the same in the seventh for the Guardians, who have won four in a row since facing an 0-2 deficit against the Chicago White Sox in the AL Division Series.

“I think we have a ton of momentum right now. I think we’re playing good  baseball,” Cade Smith, who retired the side in order in the ninth inning on Monday, told SiriusXM. “I just hope we carry that into tomorrow.

Cedric Mullins belted a solo homer in the eighth inning and Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca each had an RBI single for Tampa Bay.

Wells permitted two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning while pitching in a game for the first time since Sept. 12.

Tampa Bay got off to a fast start against Guardians starter Foster Griffin, recording four hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Yandy Diaz doubled to lead off the inning. He advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Caminero’s RBI single to left-center field.

Caminero moved to second base on a two-out single by Victor Mesa Jr. and scored on DeLuca’s single to center field.

In the sixth, DeLauter halved the deficit by depositing a first-pitch fastball from Drew Rasmussen over the wall in left-center field. The homer was the first of DeLauter’s postseason career.

Bailey forged a 2-2 tie after sending a first-pitch cutter from Rasmussen over the wall in center field. Bailey’s second homer in his last three games sent Rasmussen to the showers.

Rasmussen allowed two runs on eight hits and no walks in six-plus innings. He struck out seven.

Griffin yielded two runs on five hits in four innings. He fanned three without issuing a walk.

JOSH ALLEN’S RUSHING, PASSING POWER BILLS PAST RAMS IN OT

Tyler Bass booted a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in overtime to give the Buffalo Bills a wild 37-34 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night at Inglewood, Calif.

Josh Allen completed 12 of 19 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown and one interception and also rushed for 121 yards and a score on 10 rushes for the Bills (4-1). James Cook III rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns, and Keon Coleman had a scoring reception.

Matthew Stafford completed 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams (2-3). Puka Nacua had a career-best 17 receptions, falling one short of the franchise record held by Tom Fears (1950), for 138 yards and one score.

In the first possession of overtime, Buffalo was driving before Nate Landman forced Cook to fumble for the second time in the game. Los Angeles’ Aaron Donald recovered at the Rams’ 20-yard line. The Rams drove into field-goal range, but Harrison Mevis’ 48-yard attempt was blocked by Greg Rousseau with 4:11 remaining.Get Sports Gear

Allen then had back-to-back runs of 19 and 13 yards to set up the winning boot by Bass.

Davante Adams caught two touchdown passes and Blake Corum rushed for a score for Los Angeles.

Buffalo had the ball at the Los Angeles 26-yard line with two minutes remaining in regulation before Allen scrambled 21 yards. Two plays later, Cook scored on a 5-yard run to put the Bills ahead with 1:39 remaining.

Stafford then guided the Rams downfield, and Kyren Williams scored from the 1 with five seconds left to force overtime.

Buffalo played without receiver DJ Moore (shoulder) and standout defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee).

The teams combined for 35 fourth-quarter points, beginning with the Rams taking a 20-19 lead on Stafford’s 2-yard scoring pass to Nacua with 14:16 left. Los Angeles attempted a two-point conversion, but Stafford was sacked by T.J. Sanders.

The Bills answered with Allen charging in from the 1 with 11:28 left. Buffalo added a two-point conversion on Allen’s throw to Dalton Kincaid.

Stafford connected with Adams on a 5-yard scoring pass to tie it at 27 with 7:14 remaining.

EAGLES AND COMMANDERS MAKE POOR DECISIONS THAT COST THEM WINS DURING TOUGH WEEK FOR NFC EAST

Poor situational management cost Philadelphia and Washington victories. The Giants squandered chances, too.

It was a tough Sunday for the NFC East and a rough Week 5 altogether for the division, including Dallas losing at home Thursday night to a previously winless team and an undrafted rookie quarterback.

The depleted Eagles gave away an improbable victory in London.

The Commanders inexplicably ran the clock out on themselves in field-goal range and had to settle for a tie against the Giants, who wasted two chances to win in overtime.

Down four offensive linemen, Saquon Barkley and fellow running back Tank Bigsby, and No. 1 wide receiver DeVonta Smith, the Eagles still had a chance to beat Jacksonville when Jake Elliott kicked a 48-yard field goal with 8 seconds left.

The Jaguars had no timeouts remaining, so Philadelphia should’ve kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback and forced them to run a play from the 35 needing about 25 yards to get in field-goal position.

Instead, Elliott kept the ball in play and Ameer Abdullah returned it 53 yards against a unit that allowed a touchdown on the opening kick that was negated by penalty. Abdullah was tackled at the Philadelphia 39 with a second to go, giving Cam Little an opportunity to drill a 57-yarder for a 19-17 victory.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni immediately regretted the decision.

“I lost us that game,” Sirianni said. “And that’s what I said to our guys. And what hurts there is that the guys fought so hard and then I don’t make the decision that I should make at the end of the game and I cost us that game and I put that fully on me.”

Special teams coach Michael Clay also deserves blame for not choosing to go for a touchback.

There was a similar scenario in the Ravens-Cowboys game in Brazil in Week 3. In that one, Dallas elected to kick the ball out of the end zone after Brandon Aubrey made a 23-yard field goal to tie the score at 31 with 7 seconds remaining. Unlike Jacksonville, Baltimore had a timeout, so the touchback wasn’t the right call. Lamar Jackson completed a 27-yard pass to Zay Flowers, the Ravens stopped the clock and Tyler Loop made a 56-yard field goal for a 34-31 victory.

The Eagles should’ve been in position to kick the winning goal as time expired, but the offense mismanaged the sequence leading up to Elliott’s attempt.

They were in Elliott’s range with a first down at the Jaguars 34 after Jalen Hurts completed a 17-yard pass to Dallas Goedert and Jacksonville used its second timeout to stop the clock with 25 ticks left.

But Hurts threw incomplete on first down, wasting only 4 seconds and stopping the clock. A run play would’ve forced the Jaguars to use their last timeout. Hurts then connected with Makai Lemon for a 7-yard gain on second down, but the rookie receiver went out of bounds instead of going down, which stopped the clock and saved Jacksonville’s timeout. On third down, Dameon Pierce lost three yards on a run and the Jaguars used their last timeout with 12 seconds left.

Asked about the play-calling, Hurts said: “It’s not my place. I’m prepared as a QB to not worry about those things. I honor the play call, honor the things that come into the game. When I’m up at night, I think, ‘Should I have said something?’ But ultimately there’s a commitment to going out there and executing.”

Hurts didn’t want to second-guess his coaches publicly, but he didn’t challenge the calls in the moment.

The Eagles (2-3) have lost three straight games for the first time since 2021.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen made some questionable decisions of his own. Jacksonville had a first down at the Philadelphia 1 in the final minute of the first half with 15 seconds left and one timeout. After a run for no gain on first down, the Jaguars used their last timeout. Trevor Lawrence then threw incomplete twice and Bhayshul Tuten lost 6 yards on a run on the last play of the half instead of the Jags kicking a field goal.

Coen again passed up a short field goal down 14-10 with 6:40 left in the game. Lawrence threw incomplete from the Philadelphia 5. The Jaguars had trouble with a backup long snapper, but the field goals were chip shots. DaVon Hamilton’s snap on the game winner was spot on.

In Washington, the Giants and Commanders each had chances to run the clock down and kick a field goal to win in overtime. New York was in position with 2 minutes remaining to try a 42-yarder. But Dominic Zvada already had missed from 50, 57 and 46 yards, so coach John Harbaugh wanted to get it closer. However, Cam Skattebo fumbled to give Washington an opportunity.

Jayden Daniels drove the Commanders to the Giants 26. On first down, Rachaad White ran two yards and was tackled with just under 50 seconds to go. With no timeouts remaining, Washington had a few options because a field goal would’ve ended the game. Instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock and kicking, the Commanders huddled. Daniels went to the line of scrimmage with around 20 seconds remaining and snapped the ball with 12 to go. He didn’t spike it or throw it out of bounds. Daniels ran, got tackled and Washington had no time for a field goal.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn took the blame, and it’s unclear whether Daniels thought the team had a timeout.

“The sequencing of that does not fall on (Daniels),” Quinn said. “It’s an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards.”

No matter who made the decisions for the Eagles and Commanders (1-3-1), the mistakes were inexcusable.

NFL SUSPENDS 49ERS LINEBACKER DRE GREENLAW 1 GAME FOR HEAD BUTT

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was suspended for one game after head-butting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV following a late hit on the Seahawks sideline.

The NFL issued the suspension on Monday, saying the head butt of a player without a helmet during Sunday’s 32-29 win against Seattle was “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”

Greenlaw will miss San Francisco’s game next Monday night against Washington pending an appeal.

Greenlaw has a history of infractions. He has been ejected two other times in his career. He had a sideline altercation with Philadelphia’s head of security Dom DiSandro in 2023 and was also disqualified for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chargers’ Justin Herbert in 2022.

Greenlaw was also suspended for one game last season when he played in Denver for berating an official after a win over the New York Giants.

Greenlaw was fined $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline in a win last week.

The latest infraction came in the second quarter on Sunday, when Sam Darnold scrambled and was hit late by Greenlaw after going out of bounds, leading to a personal foul in a game San Francisco went on to win 32-29.

Several Seahawks defenders immediately confronted Greenlaw after the hit and Greenlaw responded by head-butting Jones. Jones was bleeding after the hit and Greenlaw was ejected.

“You’re going to get baited big time when, especially when you’re on their bench,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. “They told me that he had butted a guy without a helmet. So if that’s exactly what happened, then yeah, we got to be a lot smarter than that. Can’t do that.”

Greenlaw returned to San Francisco this season after playing for the Broncos in 2025. He has 37 tackles in five games.

REPORT: LIONS WR TOM KENNEDY (KNEE) OUT FOR SEASON

Detroit Lions return specialist Tom Kennedy will miss the rest of the season with an MCL injury, NFL Network reported on Monday.

He will undergo surgery after sustaining the injury to his right knee at the end of an 11-yard punt return in the second quarter of Sunday’s 45-21 road win against the Arizona Cardinals.

Kennedy, 30, has averaged 13.2 yards on six punt returns and 24.8 yards on nine kickoff returns in five games this season.

As a wide receiver, Kennedy has 18 catches for 231 yards and no touchdowns in 35 career games (one start) over parts of six seasons with the Lions (2019, 2021-22, 2024-26). He only played one snap on offense this season and has gained 1,295 all-purpose yards in his career.

Star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown returned two punts for 36 yards after Kennedy’s injury, including a 31-yard return in the second quarter that set up a Detroit touchdown.

REPORT: CHIEFS BRINGING BACK WR JUSTIN WATSON

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding free agent wide receiver Justin Watson to their practice squad, NFL Network reported on Monday.

Watson, 30, played for the Chiefs from 2022-24, catching 64 passes for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns in 50 games (20 starts)

The three-time Super Bowl champion won one ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and two with the Chiefs.

Watson has 90 receptions for 1,352 yards and nine TDs in 93 career games (24 starts) with Tampa Bay (2018-21), Kansas City and the Houston Texans (2025). The Bucs drafted him in the fifth round out of Penn in 2018.

After missing most of the 2025 season with injuries, the Texans released Watson just before the start of this season.

REPORT: TESTS CONFIRM TORN ACHILLES FOR PACKERS DT JAVON HARGRAVE

Tests confirmed that Green Bay defensive tackle Javon Hargrave sustained a season-ending torn Achilles tendon on Sunday, ESPN reported on Monday.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur anticipated the bad  news after their 31-7 victory against the visiting Chicago Bears, saying the injury that occurred late in the fourth quarter “doesn’t look good.”

Hargrave, 33, was injured while chasing Bears quarterback Case Keenum in the fourth quarter. He fell without contact and was eventually carted off the field with 1:53 remaining.

Hargrave had one tackle and one quarterback hit before exiting. He has six stops in four games this season after signing with the Packers as a free agent in March.

Hargrave has 438 tackles and 49 sacks in 150 regular-season games (130 starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2016-19), Philadelphia Eagles (2020-22), San Francisco 49ers (2023-24), Minnesota Vikings (2025) and Packers. He earned Pro Bowl honors with the Eagles in 2021 and 49ers in 2023.

REPORT: EAGLES RB WILL SHIPLEY HAS TORN PLANTAR FASCIA

The Philadelphia Eagles’ running back room took another hit Sunday with Will Shipley sustaining a foot injury that could sideline him for multiple weeks, ESPN reported Monday.

Shipley suffered a partial tear of his plantar fascia during the first half of the 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, per the report.

A fourth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2024 NFL Draft, Shipley made just his second career start (first since 2024) on Sunday with starter Saquon Barkley (hamstring) out and backup Tank Bigsby (core muscle) on injured reserve. Barkley is considered week-to-week.

Shipley, 24, scored his first NFL touchdown before exiting with the injury. His 2-yard run tied the score at 7-7 with 8:46 left in the second quarter. He finished with five carries for 6 yards and one catch for 7 yards.

Dameon Pierce took over in the backfield after Shipley departed. Philadelphia finished with 22 rushing yards on 18 attempts, an average of 1.2 yards per carry.

The Eagles (2-3) carry a three-game losing streak into Sunday’s game against the visiting Carolina Panthers (2-2), who are coming off a bye week.

In 36 career games, Shipley has rushed 64 times for 188 yards with one TD to go with 18 receptions for 122 yards.

FALCONS QB MICHAEL PENIX JR. DOESN’T EXPECT RIB INJURY TO BE LONG TERM

Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. wasn’t able to finish the Falcons’ 30-23 home loss in overtime to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night because of a rib injury, but he is confident the problem is not long term.

Penix was sacked by the Ravens’ Tavius Robinson with 19 seconds left in regulation and fumbled on the play. The Falcons recovered, but Penix went to the sideline for one play, with Tua Tagovailoa replacing him. Penix returned and threw an incompletion before Alanta punted to send the game into overtime.

Tagovailoa replaced Penix for the extra period, throwing an interception to end the game after Baltimore scored a touchdown on its possession.

“What I am going through right now I know, it’s not something that is going to be a long-term thing,” Penix, 26, said after the game through the team’s social media platforms. “But today, it took me out for the last couple of minutes of the game, but I’ll be all right.”

Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said Penix will undergo imaging on Monday. The coach said the Penix could not feel comfortable enough on the sideline to feel ready to return to the game after the Ravens’ 14-play, 68-yard scoring drive that lasted just over seven minutes.

Penix said he probably would have returned had the Falcons received the first possession of overtime, but he got cold while sitting on the bench and the pain worsened.

“It’s frustrating, but I think the biggest thing is just I want to be out there, especially in a big moment in a game like that,” Penix said. “I just felt like I needed to be out there.”

He was 19-of-32 passing for 240 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in his third game this season for Atlanta (2-3).

Penix missed the first two weeks of the season while recovering from a partially torn left ACL. In his first two games back, he completed 73.3% of his passes (33 of 45) for 479 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Falcons scored 80 points, more than any NFL team in that span, while beating New Orleans and Green Bay on the road.

He suffered a season-ending ACL tear Nov. 16, 2025, against the Carolina Panthers. It was the third time in his career Penix had a torn anterior cruciate ligament; his tore his right ACL twice in college.

The Falcons’ first-round pick (eighth overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft, Penix is 6-9 as a starter over parts of three seasons. He has played in 17 games and thrown for 3,476 yards, 15 TDs and seven interceptions.

BYU HOSTS NOTRE DAME AS COUGARS CHASE SIGNATURE WIN IN THE 1ST TOP-10 GAME AT LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUM

The buzz over this week’s top-10 matchup between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 8 BYU was palpable in the Utah Valley long before the season started, and the teams are right where they were expected to be heading into Saturday’s clash in Provo.

Notre Dame is 6-0 against the nation’s 63rd-toughest schedule, according to ESPN’s power index, and BYU is 5-0 against the 86th toughest.

Now comes the first real test for both.

For the Fighting Irish, this is the next step on the “Leave No Doubt” tour they began in response to being left out of the College Football Playoff after winning 10 straight following losses by a combined four points to two ranked teams. No. 3 Miami is waiting in three weeks.

For the Cougars, even though this is one game on one night in one season, it feels bigger than that. It will be the first top-10 matchup ever played at LaVell Edwards Stadium and a potential watershed moment for a program that’s usually good, sometimes very good, but has found greatness elusive.

Yes, BYU was the national champion in 1984 as the only unbeaten and untied team in the country. Critics dismissed it, and still do, as the product of an easy schedule in the old Western Athletic Conference.

Six years later, the Cougars upset top-ranked and reigning national champion Miami 28-21 in a game that propelled Ty Detmer to the Heisman Trophy. “We wanted respect. I think we have that now,” Detmer said after the game. The Cougars lost to a middling Oregon three weeks later and the season ended with losses by a combined 82 points to Hawaii and Texas A&M.

In 1996, they won a school-record 14 games, but an early loss to Washington and that flimsy WAC schedule kept them out of the national championship conversation. They finished No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 and haven’t appeared in the final top 10 since.

More recently, they opened 9-0 in 2024 and were in playoff contention until they lost at home to a 3-6 Kansas team and then at Arizona State. Last year, they were 8-0 and then lost a couple ugly games a month apart against Texas Tech, the first in Lubbock and the second in the Big 12 championship game.

Now, here they are again. A win over the Fighting Irish could help the Cougars get in the playoff as an at-large pick if they don’t win the Big 12 and, just as important, go down as the most impactful victory since the Detmer-led team knocked off Miami 36 years ago.

A loss to the Irish wouldn’t end BYU’s playoff hopes, not with the rest of the Big 12 schedule to play, but it would surely be another point of pain for a program that, aside from 1984, has come up short time and again.

Indiana’s great escape

Indiana was rewarded for its fourth-quarter comeback from 11 points down to beat Nebraska 20-17. The Hoosiers moved up two spots to No. 5, making Saturday’s home game against No. 4 Ohio State the second top-five matchup of the season.

The Hoosiers were held by Nebraska to 65 yards rushing, converted just 1 of 10 third downs and, according to ESPN, they had won only one of their previous 122 games when entering the final quarter behind by double digits.

Coach Curt Cignetti was asked after the game how his team could play so poorly for most of three quarters and still pull out a win.

“You’ve got to have an indomitable will, man,” he said, “a will that cannot be defeated or subdued. And you’ve got to be resilient, have the ability to overcome the unexpected, and no matter how bad it gets, you never let anxiety, frustration enter your mindset. You’re going to find a way. It’s just a matter of time.”

Storm field, pay fine

Kentucky went from unranked to No. 15 with its second straight one-point overtime win, a 35-34 victory over then-No. 10 LSU in Lexington. It was cause for celebration, and Big Blue didn’t hold back. Fans stormed the field.

The bill came Sunday when the Southeastern Conference announced Kentucky would be fined $500,000 for a violation of the league’s access to competition area policy due to fans entering the field following the game. The fine will be paid to LSU because it is a SEC member. For nonconference games, fines are paid to the SEC’s Post-graduate Scholarship Fund.

Extra points

Georgia, which replaced Texas at the top of the AP Top 25 after beating Alabama 20-17, has been ranked No. 1 in at least one poll five of the last six seasons. … Texas’ loss to Oklahoma was the first by a No. 1 team against an unranked opponent since Alabama lost to Vanderbilt in 2024. … In the Top 25 era, there have been 11 games where an unranked team beat the No. 1 team. Only four times did the unranked team make the rankings the following week, most recently Texas A&M entering at No. 21 after beating Alabama in 2021. … Oregon, which dropped out of the Top 25, had its streak of 70 straight poll appearances end.

WITH MATCHUP LOOMING, NO. 22 LSU LOOKING UP AT NO. 16 MISSISSIPPI ST.

It’s the middle of the college football season and Mississippi State is above LSU in the AP poll and in the Southeastern Conference standings.

Few people would have expected that, but it is reality as the No. 16 Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 SEC) and the No. 22 Tigers (4-2, 1-2) prepare to meet Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.

There is still a lot of football to be played, and Mississippi State’s latest game, a 56-23 home loss to Alabama two weeks ago, demonstrated that the program isn’t yet where it hopes to go.

“We’ve got a ton of work to do,” Bulldogs coach Jeff Lebby said. “We’ve got a huge challenge on Saturday morning, but the perception of what is going on here and the energy around our program and where we’re going, not just where we’re at, is really good. And so we’ve got to build on that.”

A victory over LSU would be a significant building block for a team that has road wins against Minnesota and South Carolina and defeated then-No. 19 Missouri three weeks ago.

Star quarterback Kamario Taylor sustained a lower leg injury in the victory over Missouri and aggravated it in the loss against Alabama, bringing into question his availability for the matchup with LSU.

“Wednesday’s going to do all the talking,” Lebby said in reference to the first game-week injury report when he was asked about Taylor’s status. Parker “Billy” Puckett replaced Taylor late in the game against Alabama, but he and AJ Swann are listed as co-No. 2s on the depth chart.

Whoever plays quarterback will try to keep feeding Anthony Evans III, who leads the SEC in pass receptions per game (8.0) and receiving yards per game (114.8) and is tied for second in touchdown receptions (five).

This will be LSU’s second consecutive game against a rising program within the SEC. The Tigers lost to Kentucky 35-34 in overtime last Saturday in Lexington, Ky.

The defeat left LSU with little if any margin for error in its quest to reach the College Football Playoff. Only No. 1 Georgia is undefeated in the SEC and while Mississippi State is one of eight teams with just one conference loss, the Tigers are one of seven teams with more than one loss.

“This year in the SEC,” LSU coach Lane Kiffin said, “I really feel like you can win every game on the schedule, and we can lose every game on the schedule. I feel that way about all the teams we play.

“All we can do is get better, get back to work and get to another one this week. We can’t worry about the other stuff, the playoffs, the rankings or any of those things. We have to worry about what really matters.”

Tigers quarterback Sam Leavitt is fourth in the SEC in passing yards per game (249.3) while Taylor leads (290.0) and is also tops in touchdown passes (17). Leavitt’s eight interceptions are the most of any passer in the conference.

“We have to play more consistently,” Kiffin said. “We’re too high and low, too up and down, in all phases of the game.”

TOP INDIANA PRESS RELEASES/HEADLINES

INDIANA PACERS BASKETBALL

The Indiana Pacers continue to work through their preseason slate as they travel to Oklahoma City for a matchup with the Thunder on Tuesday. Indiana is 1-1 through two preseason contests, and the Thunder are 0-2. Tuesday’s game would mark the first time guard Tyrese Haliburton will step between the lines with the Thunder since sustaining an Achilles tendon injury during the 2025 NBA Finals, should he be active for the matchup.

According to coach Rick Carlisle, Haliburton sustained a “mild tweak of his right ankle” in Indiana’s first preseason action at Iowa State (Haliburton’s alma mater). Carlisle expects Haliburton to return to the lineup as soon as Tuesday, but could rest an extra contest and return on Friday against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Regardless, the matchup with the Thunder is significant for the Pacers, who feel they have returned to full strength for the first time since the 2025 Finals series with Oklahoma City. New faces are in the lineup and aspirations are high.

Ivica Zubac, Larry Nance Jr., and Kelly Oubre Jr. are all beginning their first full seasons with Indiana, and have earned high praise from their teammates as well as Carlisle. Zubac is a true center that gives Indiana a powerful presence in the paint, Nance brings a veteran presence to the locker room, and Oubre is a versatile wing defender with a 3-point shot.

The Pacers continue to use their preseason schedule to fine-tune lineups and build chemistry with those new additions to the roster. Tuesday’s clash with the Thunder will give the Blue and Gold valuable data to take back to Indiana as the Pacers’ preparation for the regular season builds momentum.

Probable Starters

Pacers: G – Andrew Nembhard, G – Kelly Oubre Jr., F – Aaron Nesmith, F – Pascal Siakam, C – Ivica Zubac

Thunder: G – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, G – Cason Wallace, F – Alex Caruso, F – Jalen Williams, C – Aday Mara

Injury Report

Pacers: TBA

Thunder: TBA

Last Meeting

Jan. 23, 2026: Andrew Nembhard and Jarace Walker lifted the shorthanded Pacers over the Thunder in their second and final meeting of the season, 117-114.

Nembhard scored 27 points with 11 assists and Walker contributed a career-high 26 points in the 2025 Finals rematch. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded 47 points for the Thunder, who held the NBA’s best record at the time (37-9). Pascal Siakam also had a strong night for the Blue and Gold as he scored 21 points.

Indiana held Oklahoma City to just 27 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-for-26), and shot 42 percent from deep themselves. Nembhard was 4-for-7 from 3-point range, and had the most makes from distance in the game. The Pacers were without multiple key pieces — Bennedict Mathurin, Obi Toppin, and Quenton Jackson were all sidelined with injuries. Oklahoma City was also missing some critical players — Jalen Williams, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Alex Caruso were not active for the matchup.

The victory stopped a three-game skid for the Pacers, and broke a two-game winning streak by the Thunder.

Noteworthy

Tyrese Haliburton was inactive for Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. Coach Rick Carlisle said Haliburton sustained a “mild tweak of his right ankle” in the Pacers’ first preseason game, but that he could return as soon as Tuesday against the Thunder.

T.J. McConnell (undisclosed) and Johnny Furphy (right ACL rehab) were also sidelined on Saturday.

Thunder guard Brooks Barnhizer is an Indiana native. Barnhizer played his high school basketball at Jefferson High School (Lafayette) before spending his college career at Northwestern University.

Indiana will clash with Oklahoma City twice this season. The first regular season meeting will be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Nov. 23, and the second will be at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center on Feb. 5.

INDIANA WOMEN’S TENNIS

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Hi’ilani Williams and Elisabeth Dunac had a great performance at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional championships, reaching semifinals in doubles play.

The doubles pair, Williams and Dunac, advanced to the semifinals after earning four consecutive victories throughout the tournament. The duo faced Vanderbilt in a hard-fought semifinal match, ultimately falling in the deciding tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 2-10.

The Hoosiers will be back in action in early November for their next tournament.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A chance for some resume-boosting wins is on the docket this weekend as the Indiana volleyball team (10-5, 3-3 Big Ten) heads on its annual west coast road swing. The Hoosiers will make the trip to the Pacific Northwest for the second time since the Big Ten expanded in 2024. IU lost both matches in the maiden journey there to open conference play two season ago.

Following a pair of losses to No. 1 Nebraska and (RV) USC at Wilkinson Hall, IU will be hungry to get back in the win column this weekend. These are the sixth and seventh ranked opponents that the Hoosiers will play this year. Third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark made her season debut on Sunday afternoon as IU gets closer to its projected starting rotation.

Defense will have to be strong this weekend out west. When IU holds opponents under a .275 hitting percentage this year, it is 10-1. If opposition goes above that mark, IU is 0-4 on the campaign. The Hoosiers have upped production in the block department with 2.38 per set (50.0 total) in conference action this year.

Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema has had another breakout season offensively and will hope to respond from a tough contest against USC. She’s averaging 2.69 kills per set while hitting .356 on the season. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager (3.76 kills per set) and fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum (2.83 kills per set) lead the charge from the pins.

Both of this weekend’s games will be broadcasted on B1G+. Friday’s (Oct. 16) game at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene is set for a 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT first serve. The Hoosiers will pivot to Seattle on Sunday (Oct. 18) for a 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT first serve at Alaska Airlines Arena.

A Win Would

Oregon:

– Be the highest-ranked win of the year, highest overall since 2022

– Be the seventh ranked road win of Steve Aird’s tenure as head coach

Washington:

– Be the 41st overall ranked win in program history

– Be the seventh top-20 Big Ten road win in program history, first since 2022

Both:

– Be back-to-back ranked wins for the second time in program history

– Have Steve Aird match the program record most ranked wins – head coach

Stats and Trends

• These will be the sixth and seventh AVCA ranked opponents on the docket this season.

• IU swept its west coast road trip last year against No. 17 USC (W, 3-1) and No. 24 UCLA (W, 3-1).

• The Hoosiers are playing seven of 10 games in the month of October on the road.

Notable

ALL INVOLVED: Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is closing in on becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. She’s 215 away as she continues to set the Hoosiers at an elite offensive rate. The Serbian is averaging 10.69 assists per set in her career at IU.

TALLYING WINS: Since the 2022 campaign (four-plus years), Indiana has racked up 87 wins under head coach Steve Aird. That includes at least 15 wins in each full season during that stretch. IU will be looking to reach that plateau again for the fifth-straight year in 2026.

SERVING TOUGH: Since 2022, no Big Ten programs have had more service aces than IU (887) and Oregon (885). Those two teams will go to the test on Friday evening, each possessing more than 90 service aces on the campaign. five different players have double-digit aces for the Hoosiers this year.

SERBIAN CONNECTION: Each team this weekend will have a Serbian competitor on their roster. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic played with Washington outside hitter Simona Mateska on this summer’s silver medal team at the CEV U22 European Championships. Oregon’s middle blocker Iva Šucurovic also hails from Serbia.

ROAD WINNING: After a win at Penn State last year, there are now just three Big Ten schools that IU has never won at in program history. IU can check off two of those boxes this weekend at Oregon and Washington. The Hoosiers lost both matches on conference-opening weekend in 2024 in the Pacific Northwest.

BIG BLOCKS: Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry has been IU’s best blocker this season at 1.23 blocks per set. In her outstanding college career, she has recorded 372 career blocks. She is closing in on 400 in her fifth year and is top 20 among active NCAA players in the category.

RANKED WINS: Head coach Steve Aird and the Hoosiers will get a crack at two more ranked opponents this weekend. He has guided the program to 10 wins against AVCA opponents. If he is able to help win both games this weekend, he will match the program record for ranked wins (12) by a head coach.

WELCOME BACK: Third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark made her season debut on Sunday afternoon after missing the first 14 games through injury. She recorded a kill on her first swing of the year. IU will now hope to get her back into the rotation as another potential offensive piece comes into play.

Scouting the Opponent

Oregon (14-2, 5-1 Big Ten)

• After a surprise resurgence last year, Oregon has been one of the best teams in the country this year. The Ducks sit just outside the top 10 of the AVCA poll and are coming off a pair of wins at Michigan State and Michigan. Oregon has two losses, both road defeats at Arizona State and Wisconsin

• A balanced offensive effort has been a catalyst for Oregon this year. Outside hitter Sjakkie Donkers (3.74 kills per set), outside hitter Valentina Vaulet (3.26 kills per set) and opposite hitter Alanah Clemente (3.24 kills per set) are providing over 10 kills per set. Setter Marina Crownover has 10.23 assists per set.

• Oregon has been one of the best serving teams over the past few years. Vaulet has 26 aces on the season. She’s one of five Ducks with double-digit aces. Middle blocker Iva Šucurovic is providing 0.96 blocks per set (55.0 total). Fellow middle Dalia Virlan is right behind her at 0.83.

Washington (13-2, 4-2 Big Ten)

• Another team with a balanced offensive attack, Washington has enjoyed a nice bounce back season under head coach Leslie Gabriel. Washington picked up a sweep of Purdue two weeks ago and have just two losses on the year. This is the fourth-straight year these teams will play.

• Outside hitter Simona Mateska is hitting .301 on the season with 3.46 kills per set. Outside hitter Kylie Kleckner (152), opposite hitter Maija Howse (139) and middle blocker Julia Hunt (107) all have over 100 kills this season as well. Transfer setter Andrea Fabikovicová runs the offense to a team hitting percentage of .257.

• Defense has been the name of the game for the Huskies this year. They are allowing opposing offenses to hit just .150 on the season. There hasn’t been a team this year to hit over .300 against Washington. On the other side, Washington has hit above .300 on just three occasions this year.

Inside the Series

Oregon

• These two teams played for the first time when Oregon joined the league in 2024. IU was a part of Oregon’s opening weekend in the Big Ten in Eugene where the Ducks won a four-set contest. Both matches between the programs have gone four sets with the home team winning each one.

Washington

• Much like UCLA, IU played Washington at a neutral site contest in Long Beach in 2023 prior to joining the league. All three matches between the two teams have been sweeps. In games played at respective schools, the home team has swept each time.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

ROSEMONT, Ill. – After putting together the best rushing performance of his career and leading Purdue Football to a 41-13 victory over his former team, sophomore running back Fame Ijeboi was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 12).

Along with Purdue’s back-to-back B1G wins, it marks the second straight week that a Boilermaker has earned a weekly conference accolade. Freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano was selected as the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week following Purdue’s road victory at Illinois (Oct. 5). Ijeboi becomes the first Boilermaker to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since quarterback Aidan O’Connell during the 2022 season (Oct. 17, 2022).

Going up against his former team in the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ijeboi produced career highs in carries (31), rushing yards (195) and rushing touchdowns (3), racking up the most rushing yards by a Boilermaker since Markell Jones in 2017 (217 vs. Indiana) and the 15th-most all-time. According to PFF, he forced 18 missed tackles, the most missed tackles forced in a game since Ashton Jeanty (Boise State) versus San Diego State in 2024 and the most in a Big Ten game since Blake Corum (Michigan) had 24 versus Michigan State in 2022. Ijeboi became just the fourth Boilermaker since 1995 to record at least 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a game, the first since Montrell Lowe in 2000 (208 rushing yards, 4 TDs vs. Indiana).

Ijeboi has made an immediate impact for Purdue after transferring from Minnesota, becoming one of the leaders on the offensive side of the ball. With 549 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the year, he ranks second in the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally in rushing touchdowns. He is one rushing TD away from becoming the 22nd Boilermaker to record double-digit rushing touchdowns in a season. The Folcroft, Pennsylvania, native has a pair of three-touchdown games this season, the first Boilermaker to accomplish the feat since Kory Sheets in 2008.

Proving to be a hard back to take down, Ijeboi leads the nation by forcing 48 missed tackles throughout the season, 14 more than any other Big Ten player according to PFF. He joins Bijan Robinson (62), Kenneth Walker III (58) and Jeanty (48) as the only players with at least 48 missed tackles through the first six games of a season since 2021.

Ijeboi and the Boilermakers look to continue their winning ways, welcoming Washington to Ross-Ade Stadium for a Friday night matchup (Oct. 16). The conference battle is set for 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

PURDUE MEN’S TENNIS

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – The Purdue men’s tennis team ended on a high note at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional main draw with junior Nour Fathalla securing the victory in the singles semifinals. The win secured his bid for the NCAA Singles Championships, which will take place November 17-22 in Athens, Georgia.

It is the second straight year Purdue will have a presence in the NCAA Championships, having a doubles pair qualify a year ago. On the singles side, Fathalla is the second Boilermaker this century, and first since Gergely Madarasz in 2016, to make it to the NCAA tournament.

Fathalla posted the win after a rare occurrence of facing his teammate, freshman Lorenzo Balducci, in the Regional Semifinals. Balducci picked up three consecutive singles wins leading up to the match. Meanwhile, in doubles, Baducci had teamed up with Fathalla for the Regionals, having advanced to the Quarterfinals yesterday before ultimately falling.

The Boilermakers will be back in action October 29th- November 1st for the Big Ten Individual Championships.

With both Regional Final qualifiers earning the bid to the NCAA tournament, they have opted out of the Finals match, originally slated for tomorrow. In total, the ITA Regional Championships provide the opportunity for 26 singles players across its 13 Regional Championships to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.

Although Regionals provide the single-largest opportunity for players to claim a spot in the postseason, Purdue’s upcoming ITA Sectional Championships (set for November 5-8) serve as the last chance to qualify, with six singles players from each section will earn a spot (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners) and three doubles teams (champion, finalist, and third-place).

DAY 5 – MAIN DRAW | Monday, October 12

Singles- Semifinals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After 36 holes of action on Monday (Oct. 12), Justin HIcks of the Purdue Fort Wayne men’s golf team has a chance at an individual trophy at the Purdue Fall Invitational.

In the unique play six, take five format, the field had its depth tested. Hicks rose to the occasion, shooting 70-71-141. He was remarkably steady in the morning round, firing a bogey-free 70 with birdies on three and seven. In the afternoon round, it looked like he was doing the same with back-to-back birdies to start. After bogeys on 17 and 18, he went 4-under over the next seven holes thanks to birdies on one and four and an eagle on the 290-yard par-4 seventh hole. That hole features a double-fairway with a short approach in normally, but it was moved up 75 yards in the second round. Hicks took advantage, reaching the green off the tee. With 18 holes to play, Hicks is in fifth place, three shots off the lead.

Next Up in Valpo Soccer: It’s a return home to Brown Field for the first time in three weeks this week for the Valpo soccer team, as the Beacons move into the second half of conference play when they play host to Southern Illinois Thursday night and Evansville Sunday afternoon.

Previously: The Beacons led for over 60 minutes Sunday at UNI after a Sofia Raco goal in the 20th minute, but the Panthers struck for the match-tying goal in the 83rd minute of a 1-1 draw. Salange Bell made a season-high eight saves to preserve the draw.

Looking Ahead: Valpo returns to the road next week, playing at Belmont Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24.

Following the Beacons: Both of this week’s matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available at ValpoAthletics.com. All home matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as part of The Valley on ESPN, while select road fixtures will also have live video available.

Head Coach John Marovich: In his 19th season at the helm of the Valpo program, John Marovich holds a 146-145-55 (.501) record both overall and at Valpo as a head coach. The 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year and the head of the 2022 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year, Marovich is Valpo’s all-time leader in victories.

Series Notes: Southern Illinois – Valpo owns a 2-1-3 advantage in the all-time series against the Salukis since SIU started competing in the spring of 2021. Last season, the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in Carbondale, with Martha Goddard delivering the match-tying goal in the 41st minute after the Salukis had scored just four minutes into the match.

Evansville – Valpo is 6-10-6 all-time against Evansville, but owns a slight 4-3-4 advantage since joining the Valley. The Beacons are unbeaten in their last four against the Purple Aces, including a 3-0 win in last year’s season finale in Evansville. Lauren Hill, Kate Jeffery and Kiara Desiderio found the back of the net in the win

Scouting the Opposition: Southern Illinois – The Salukis enter Thursday’s match at 10-2-0 on the season, having won each of their last nine matches. That includes a 4-0-0 start to MVC play, with 2-1 wins over Evansville, Murray State and Belmont, and most recently a 1-0 win against Illinois State. Nao Katamoto has a team-high 15 points with four goals and seven assists, while Maya Dixon has scored a team-best six goals. In goal, Reagan Miller has seen the majority of playing time and owns a 0.60 GAA and an .844 save percentage.

Evansville – The Purple Aces come into the week with a 3-5-1 overall record and a 1-3-0 mark in MVC play, having earned their first Valley win of the year last time out at Belmont, 2-1. Evansville hosts UNI on Thursday prior to Sunday’s matchup. Brielle LaBerge has been involved in over half the team’s goals, with four goals and two assists. In goal, Bri Chirpich has seen the vast majority of playing time and owns a 1.63 GAA and a .755 save percentage.

To Score or Not to Score: It’s been pretty simple most of the season for the Beacons – if they score, they’re in good shape for a result. They have scored at least one goal in eight of their 13 matches and own a 5-1-2 record in those matches. On the other hand, they’ve been held scoreless on five occasions, resulting in five of their six defeats.

Finally, One Goal: It was a moment 13 matches in the making (although maybe not quite as impressive as the football team’s recent 15-game streak of losing the coin flip) on Sunday at UNI, as for the first time this year, the Beacons scored exactly one goal in a match – prior to Sunday, they had scored in seven matches and had scored two or more in all seven. This is the longest stretch to start a season without a one-goal game, surpassing the 1993 team, which scored exactly one goal in its 10th match – that year was the program’s debut season and that goal in the 10th match was the first in program history.

Rock On, Raco: Freshman Sofia Raco found the back of the net for the second time this season on Sunday at UNI, converting a breakaway in the 20th minute. She is tied for third on the team with six points, as she also had a match-winning goal at Purdue Fort Wayne and picked up assists on goals versus SIUE and Detroit Mercy. Raco has also been seeing much more playing time as of late, as after averaging 51.2 minutes/match in the season’s first six matches, she’s played 72.1 minutes/match in the last seven.

Helping Out: After a freshman campaign that saw her tie the program’s single-season freshman record with five assists, it took sophomore Martha Goddard 13 matches into this season to pick up her first assist this year, as she broke the seal in that department by assisting on Raco’s goal at UNI. It was her team-high 15th point of the season, tied for second among MVC players.

Once Again: For the third time in a four-match stretch, Goddard and fellow sophomore Kiara Desiderio both found the back of the net in the win over Indiana State in Valpo’s last home match Sept. 27. Both Goddard and Desiderio had a brace against Oakland, the first time since October 2006 Valpo has had two players scored multiple goals in the same match, and each scored against Southern Indiana as well.

A Late Match-Winner: Desiderio dispatched the match-winning penalty kick with 1:29 to play in the win over the Sycamores, just 31 seconds after ISU had evened the match at 1-1. It was Valpo’s latest match-winner since Kelsey Jahn scored with 27 seconds remaining in a win at Missouri State to open the 2017 Valley slate.

Record Book Watch: Goddard’s goal against ISU was her seventh of the season, second among MVC players. Not only that, it leaves her just one goal shy of cracking Valpo’s single-season top-10 chart. Meanwhile, Desiderio’s goal was her sixth of the year and the 13th of her career, just two away from the program’s career top-10 chart despite only being in the back half of her sophomore campaign.

Two Goal Scorers: This season is already the first time since 2017 that Valpo’s second-leading goal scorer has tallied at least six goals for the season – that season, Sydney Griffin had six goals to trail Cory Griffith’s 11 goals. Only three times in program history has Valpo’s second-leading goal scorer recorded at least seven goals, while only once have they hit 10 goals (2005: Emily King 11, Kendall Brown 10).

First-Time Honoree: While Desiderio earned her third career weekly honor from the MVC office with her Player of the Week accolade Sept. 14 after her three-goal, one-assist week, senior Daisy Boardman earned a weekly award for the first time as she was recognized as the MVC Defender of the Week. Boardman played 170 of a possible 180 minutes at right back as the Beacons surrendered just one goal over their final two nonconference wins, while adding her first assist of the season on the attack versus Oakland. Boardman was just the third Valpo player to be honored as Defender of the Week since the Valley broke goalkeeper and defender into two separate weekly awards starting in 2023.

Multiple Weekly Winners: Desiderio and Boardman teamed up to mark the seventh time multiple Valpo players have earned MVC weekly accolades in the same week since Valpo joined the Valley. It was the first such instance since Sept. 26, 2022, when Addy Joiner, Nikki Coryell and Nicole Norfolk swept the player, goalkeeper and defender weekly honors.

Nonconference Success: With wins in each of their final two nonconference fixtures, the Beacons closed out their nonconference slate at .500 with a 4-4-1 record. This is the fifth time in the last seven seasons that Valpo has finished .500 or better in the nonconference schedule.

Preseason Honoree: Coming off a rookie campaign in which she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, sophomore Kiara Desiderio was named to the Preseason All-MVC Team. Desiderio, who became Valpo’s first Freshman of the Year since joining the Valley and was also a Second Team All-MVC choice, kicked off her Beacon career with a team-high seven goals in 2025 — tied for third-most by a freshman in program history. She ranked third in the MVC in goals and fifth in points (15), while also being tied for seventh nationally in goals by a freshman.

Who’s Back: The Beacons return 16 players who saw action on the pitch last season, including eight regular starters. That group accounted for 73.4% of the team’s minutes played by field players in 2025, including six players who played over 1,000 minutes – led by junior Ashley Trippeer, who played 1,397 minutes.

Who’s Gone: Valpo graduated four seniors from last year’s squad and had five other offseason departures. Notably, Second Team All-MVC honoree Molly O’Rear and starting goalkeeper Kate Sheridan were among the group of seniors.

Who’s New: The Beacons welcome nine new players to the program this season: seven true freshmen, one Division I transfer and one Division III transfer.

Good as Goddard: Sophomore forward Martha Goddard returns for her second season in the Brown and Gold after a strong rookie campaign. An MVC All-Freshman Team selection, Goddard tallied three goals and recorded five assists, the latter mark matching the program record for assists by a freshman. She was tied for second in the MVC in assists and tied for fourth on Valpo’s overall single-season chart. Goddard became the first Valpo player to register an assist in three consecutive contests since 2017.

Looking Back at Last Year: Valpo posted a 5-8-4 overall record in 2025 and went 2-4-3 in MVC play, earning eight more points in the Valley than the previous season despite playing one fewer conference game and raising its winning percentage 162 points year-over-year. The Beacons scored 21 goals while surrendering 28 goals, improving their goal differential by 21 goals over 2024. This all came with the vast majority of field player minutes coming from underclassmen, as the 2025 Beacons had 41.2% of their field player minutes played by freshman and 42.3% by sophomores. Kiara Desiderio was named the MVC Freshman of the Year and was joined by Molly O’Rear on the Second Team All-MVC, while Martha Goddard joined Desiderio on the MVC All-Freshman Team.

UINDY WOMEN’S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The UIndy women’s tennis team finished their first road tournament at the ITA Midwest Regional.

The tournament was highlighted by semifinal appearances in singles and doubles play with one final appearance in singles play.

Singles play saw Jimena De Pablos and Ayse Yagmur Baylan pick up wins in the opening round of the Main Draw. De Pablos won her opening match in the opening two sets 6-0 and 6-2. Baylan won in a three set battle 6-3, 6-7 and finished with a 10-8 set to make the round of 32. Each then fell in the round of 16.

The Greyhounds also found success in the B Draw with Linya Chen and Magda Kornijczuk each making the round of 32. Chen made the furthest run of singles play for UIndy making her way all the way to the final where she narrowly fell after winning the semifinal in three sets.

Silvia Zappoli rallied in the consolation bracket of the Main Draw of singles play, advancing all the way to the semifinal.

In doubles play the Hounds saw similar success with the pair of De Pablos and Kornijczuk making a dominant run to the final where they didn’t allow an opponent to score five or more points until they fell in the final in three sets.

Baylan and Chen also shined in doubles play. The duo fell in the opening round of the B Draw before winning the Consolation bracket where they finished with a 8-4 win in the final over a pair from UMSL.

UINDY VOLLEYBALL

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Indianapolis volleyball team is extending its streak in the AVCA Tereflex Division II top 25 to five straight weeks, it was announced Monday.

The Hounds moved up for the second week in a row to No. 22 after picking up their sixth win in GLVC play, sweeping Lewis on Saturday.  UIndy boasts a 17-2 record with a 1.00 win-loss percentage. The squad remains undefeated at home, going 9-0 in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center for the program’s best home start since the 2012 season.

The UIndy defense holds its opponents to a .156 hitting percentage, ranking second in the GLVC. Senior defensive specialist Macy Bruton ranks second in the league in digs/set, averaging 5.33 for the Hounds this season. The Crawfordsville, Ind. native recently entered the program’s top 15 in career digs, scooping up 1,124 with nine games remaining in the regular season.

MARIAN FOOTBALL

Kansas City —- Marian University redshirt junior Samirion Ford and sophomore Ashton Vogel were named NAIA Football Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, the organization announced Monday evening.

Ford racked up 14 tackles, 10 of which were solo stops, in 10th-ranked Marian’s 30-28 win over 3rd-ranked Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at Ascension St. Vincent Field. The Knights help the Wildcats to their season low in scoring, while turning IWU over three times.

Vogel nailed three field goals and converted each of his three extra points, including the go-ahead score in the Knights’ victory. The Indianapolis native converted field goal tries of 35 yards, 42 yards and 27 yards. The latter in the group put Marian head for good with just over three and a half minutes to play.

Marian, ranked eighth in the most recent Stadionic NAIA Coaches’ poll and number one in the first NAIA Football Performance Index rankings release of the season, will host 16th-ranked Olivet Nazarene in the final game of a four-game homestand. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m.

MARIAN MEN’S GOLF

Jackson, Mich. —- Marian University Men’s Golf senior Lane Zedrick was named Crossroads League Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Zedrick earned individual medalist honors at the Fall Skyhawk in LaGrange, Ga. this past week. The Fishers, Ind. native opened with two rounds of 66 before closing the tournament with a one-over 73 to win the tournament by five shots.

Zedrick picked up his fifth career tournament title with the win. He earns CL Men’s Golfer of the Week recognition for the second time this fall, following a runner-up finish at the Wildcat Invitational in September.

Marian Men’s Golf competes in its final tournament of the fall season next week, competing at The Clubs at Five Oaks Invite in Lebanon, Tenn. on Monday and Tuesday.

TAYLOR WOMEN’S SOCCER

JACKSON, Mich. – The No. 10 Taylor women’s soccer team swept the Crossroads League’s awards for the week of Oct. 5-11, as junior goalkeeper Ava Callaway was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior forward Eliza Luttrell earned Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

It is the first time TU women’s soccer has swept the league’s weekly awards since Oct. 26, 2020, when current assistant coach Morgan Gerig and Hannah Dempsey earned the honors in the same week.

Callaway, who also took the defensive award earlier this season, is now a two-time honoree this fall. Luttrell’s selection is the third of her career and her first of the 2026 season. Both played key roles in the highest-ranked win in program history, a 2-1 victory at No. 7 Marian on Saturday night that handed the Knights their first loss of the season. The result ended MU’s 31-match home unbeaten streak and its 19-match unbeaten run in league play.

Callaway collected a career-high 10 saves, including seven stops by halftime, and then held firm as the Knights fired nine shots in the opening minutes of the second half. Her final save came in the 88th minute, turning away MU’s leading scorer Olivia Parmer to preserve the lead. The Knights’ lone goal came on a 72nd-minute own goal after a mishandled clearance by the TU defense

Luttrell tallied three points in the contest and had a hand in both Trojan goals. Her corner kick in the 23rd minute found Leilani Bisera at the far side of the box for the opening header, and she converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute for her first goal of the season and what proved to be the game-winner. It was the sixth career match in which she recorded at least one goal and one assist, and her first this season.

The sweep gives the TU women’s soccer team four weekly honors this fall, following senior forward Leah McQuade’s Offensive Player of the Week nod and Callaway’s first defensive award.

TU Athletics has now collected 22 Crossroads League and MSFA Mideast League Player of the Week honors this fall, along with one NAIA National Player of the Week award.

The Trojans (8-2-3, 2-1-2 CL) close out the road portion of their regular season this week at Saint Francis on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday (3 p.m.)
