MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL NEWS
PADRES COME UP WITH CLUTCH EFFORTS, BEAT BREWERS TO FORCE GAME 4
Jake Cronenworth hit a tie-breaking homer in the fifth inning and Michael King registered a six-out save as the San Diego Padres staved off elimination with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
Cronenworth led off the bottom of the fifth by jumping on a first-pitch sweeper by JoJo Romero (0-1) and sending it over the wall to give the Padres a 3-2 advantage.
After Padres star closer Mason Miller went on the paternity list prior to the game, King was called on to protect a 4-3 lead two days after throwing 72 pitches as the Game 2 starter. The right-hander gave up one hit and walked two to record the save.
“I made myself available on Sunday, confirmed it with (manager Craig) Stammen today,” King said after the win. “I knew that there was a chance it was going to be late in the game because of Mason’s wife, but six outs to end the game is six outs to end the game. I wasn’t as crisp as I’d like to be, but I’m very happy for a Game 4.”
William Contreras went 3-for-4 with a walk and a homer and Christian Yelich snapped his 19-game postseason streak without an RBI for the Brewers. Yelich and Cooper Pratt each had two hits.
Game 4 of the best-of-five series is Wednesday night in San Diego.
“We used a lot of energy today, and we’ve got to bring that same energy tomorrow also. It’s going to be another fight just like the first three games, and I don’t think I expect anything different,” Stammen said. “The resilience we showed today, the stick-to-itativeness, the keep bouncing back, all the adjectives you can use for that, this team showed it all year, and they showed it especially again tonight. We’re going to have to do it again tomorrow.”
Contreras and Brice Turang walked against King with one out in the ninth before Yelich hit a bullet that short-hopped into the glove of Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who touched second and threw to first for the game-ending double play.
“We didn’t get the big hit at the big time, but do you fault Yelly for hitting one 107 there and Bogaerts making a great play? They got a great team, and they played great defense tonight. They really did,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said.
The Brewers lost their 12th consecutive road playoff game.
“I really enjoy them. I enjoy the road losses. They feel good. Does it wear on me?” Murphy quipped. “That’s a great point to bring up. It’s tough to win on the road in playoff situations obviously. We’ve done a pretty good job at home, I’d say, but you’re right. It’s never fun.”
Left-hander Yuki Matsui (1-0) was credited with the win after retiring three batters over the fifth and sixth innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bogaerts singled with two outs against right-hander Antonio Senzatela. Left-hander DL Hall entered and threw a wild pitch to move Bogaerts to second.
Pinch hitter Miguel Andujar hit a broken-bat bouncer to shortstop that went between the legs of a leaping Bogaerts. Shortstop Pratt seemed slightly distracted and his ensuing throw to first bounced in front of Jake Bauers and caromed away a few feet as Bogaerts came around to score.
In the seventh, Contreras stroked a two-out single off Bradgley Rodriguez and Turang followed with a single. Yelich then delivered an RBI single to bring the Brewers within 4-3, his first RBI since Game 7 of the 2018 NL Championship against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Garrett Mitchell then struck out to end the inning.
San Diego scored twice in the third against Brewers starter Dustin May, who allowed two runs, three hits, two walks and struck out three in three-plus innings.
Samad Taylor stroked a leadoff single, stole second and was sacrificed to third by Cronenworth. Taylor scored when Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a tapper to shortstop and was thrown out at first.
Jackson Merrill followed with a single and stole second before Manny Machado delivered a run-scoring single to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.
The Brewers got on the board in the fourth when Contreras smacked a leadoff homer to left off Nick Pivetta. It was Contreras’ second homer of the series.
Milwaukee started the fifth with back-to-back singles by Pratt and Sal Frelick. Joey Ortiz then laid down a bunt to move the runners up.
Jason Adam replaced Pivetta and induced Jackson Chourio to hit a fly ball to shallow left. Pratt beat Dustin Harris’ throw to knot the score at 2.
Pivetta gave up two runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked none.

YOSHINOBU YAMAMOTO, DODGERS TAKE NLDS LEAD OVER BRAVES
ATLANTA — Enrique Hernandez and Freddie Freeman each homered in the fourth inning and Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered seven strong innings to hand the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-1 win and a 2-1 series lead over the Atlanta Braves in their National League Division Series Tuesday night.
Yamamoto (1-0), making his first postseason start since he was named the 2025 World Series MVP, allowed just one run on four hits, walking one while striking out a postseason-career-high 10 batters.
Tanner Scott followed with a scoreless eighth, and Edwin Diaz worked around a leadoff double from Ozzie Albies in the ninth to toss a scoreless ninth and secure the save.
The Dodgers, looking to become the first National League team to win three straight World Series, can advance to the NL Championship Series with a win Wednesday night in the best-of-five series.
“I was able to get into the game with a great feel,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter. “And then I was feeling confident and able to control all my pitches today.”
After the Dodgers wasted prime scoring chances in two of the first three innings, Hernandez followed Andy Pages’ leadoff single with a 406-foot homer to left off Chris Sale, the 17th of his postseason career, to make it 2-0.
“He’s a big-time player,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts about Hernandez, who was making his first start of the 2026 postseason. “I said earlier, we needed a little bit of that (Enrique) dust. And he’s always prepared. And he loves moments like this. He has a way to lock in.”
One out later, Freeman added a solo homer in his first postseason game back in Atlanta, where he played his first 12 seasons and ended his tenure with the 2021 World Series championship. The 18th home run of his postseason career moved Freeman into a tie for 10th in major league history.
Sale (0-1) grinded through five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
The left-hander navigated early traffic, stranding two runners in the first and leaving the bases loaded in the third, when left fielder Mauricio Dubon also robbed a would-be two-run homer from Freeman, before Los Angeles jumped in front in the fourth.
“The Dodgers did a good job of really grinding at-bats and running up his pitch count,” said Braves manager Walt Weiss regarding Sales’ outing. “And they typically do that. They’re one of the lower swing rates in the league. They force you into the zone. And probably the command wasn’t perfect, but the stuff was really good still with Chris.”
The Braves had a chance to fight back in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out and the top of the order up. However, Yamamoto limited Atlanta to one run on Drake Baldwin’s groundout to first, ending the inning by inducing Ronald Acuna Jr. to ground out to second.
Four Atlanta relievers tossed a scoreless inning apiece to keep the game in range for the offense, which managed just five hits and two walks. The Braves struck out 12 times and finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

ALL-STAR PITCHER ‘SUDDEN SAM’ MCDOWELL DIES AT 84
Six-time All-Star pitcher Sam McDowell, who played 15 seasons in the majors with four teams, died Monday at the age of 84.
McDowell, a left-hander nicknamed “Sudden Sam” for his brilliant fastball, spent his first 11 seasons in Cleveland from 1961-71. He led the American League in strikeouts five times during that span, including two seasons with more than 300, and topped the league in ERA once.
“The Cleveland Guardians family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the great pitchers in baseball history, Sam McDowell,” Bob DiBiasio, the Guardians’ senior vice president of public affairs, said in a press release Tuesday.
“He was a cherished member of our Alumni Ambassador program and loved sharing stories with our fans when he visited Progressive Field,” DiBiasio continued. “Most importantly, Sam’s life was a story of redemption. After extensive education and training, Sam was a counselor for athletes suffering from addiction and depression. We send our condolences to the entire McDowell family, as well as his many teammates and other organizations impacted by his career.
A Pittsburgh native, McDowell compiled a record of 141-134 with 14 saves and a 3.17 ERA in 425 career games (346 starts) with Cleveland, the San Francisco Giants (1972-73), New York Yankees (1973-74) and his hometown Pirates (1975).
McDowell finished third in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 1970 after finishing 20-12 with a 2.92 ERA and 304 strikeouts in 305 innings.
He racked up 2,159 of his 2,453 strikeouts with Cleveland, joining Hall of Famer Bob Feller (2,581) as the only pitchers in team history with more than 2,000.

WEEK 5 NFL PREVIEW
This season, 18 games have featured a game-winning score in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime – only one season (1983) had more through the first four weeks. Three teams remain unbeaten – Kansas City (on a bye in Week 5), Minnesota and San Francisco – entering Week 5 while seven of the 15 matchups this week feature teams each with two or more wins this season.
Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 5:
Undefeated on the road: The two unbeaten teams in the NFC – Minnesota and San Francisco – are on the road in Week 5. The Vikings can begin 5-0 for the second time in the past three seasons (2024) while the 49ers can start 5-0 for the third time since head coach Kyle Shanahan was hired in 2017 (2019 and 2023).
San Francisco (4-0) at Seattle (3-1) (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX): The 49ers are the only team to rank in the top five in both scoring offense (tied for second, 30.5 points per game) and scoring defense (third, 16.0 points per game allowed). The Seahawks enter Week 5 leading the NFL in total defense (246.8 yards per game allowed) and passing defense (144.8 yards per game allowed). In their last meeting, Seattle defeated San Francisco, 41-6, in the 2025 NFC Divisional Round, the team’s first win on its journey to the Super Bowl LX championship last season.
San Francisco became the first team in 21 seasons and the fifth team ever to not allow a sack in each of their first four games of a season, joining the 2005 Indianapolis Colts, 1984 and 1989 Miami Dolphins, and 1975 St. Louis Cardinals.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy leads the NFL with a 126.2 passer rating and ranks tied for first with 11 touchdown passes entering Week 5. He can become the fifth player since 2000 with multiple touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher in each of his team’s first five games of a season, joining Tom Brady (2007 and 2015 with New England), Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (2013 with Denver), Aaron Rodgers (2011 with Green Bay) and Russell Wilson (2020 with Seattle).
Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the league in touchdown receptions (six), ranks third in receiving yards (481) and fourth in receptions (32) this season. He is one of two players, along with New Orleans’ Chris Olave, with at least five receptions and 75 receiving yards in each of the first four weeks.
Minnesota (4-0) at New Orleans (1-3) (1 p.m. ET, FOX): The Vikings lead the NFL in scoring defense (12.8 points per game allowed) and sacks (16) entering Week 5. Minnesota, with a 9-3 win in Week 2 and a 15-10 win in Week 4, became the third team in NFL history, and the first in over a century, to begin a season 4-0 without scoring a touchdown in two of their first four games, joining the 1922 and 1923 Chicago Cardinals.
Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner ranks second in the league with 5.5 sacks and per Next Gen Stats, leads the NFL with 30 quarterback pressures this season.
Buffalo (3-1) at the Los Angeles Rams (2-2) (Monday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC): Buffalo leads the NFL with 31.8 points per game this season while the Rams rank second in total offense (417 yards per game) entering Week 5. Los Angeles is set to become the first team since 1970 to play four of its first five games of a season in primetime.
Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen has 30 touchdowns (28 passing, two rushing) and a 105.0 rating in 11 career Monday starts. This week, Allen can become the first quarterback all-time with a rushing touchdown in each of his team’s first five games of a season.
Last week, Rams running back Kyren Williams became the first player since 2016 (Rob Kelley, Nov. 20, 2016) with multiple rushing touchdowns in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter as Los Angeles overcame a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Philadelphia, 24-20. (Kansas City’s Kenneth Walker later accomplished the feat in the afternoon window on Sunday in Week 4).
Philadelphia (2-2) vs. Jacksonville (3-1) (London, 9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network): For the second consecutive week, a game will be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London as Philadelphia meets Jacksonville.
The Eagles are 2-0 in international games, with wins in 2018 against Jacksonville (at Wembley Stadium in London) and 2024 against Green Bay (at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil).
The Jaguars have appeared in a league-high 14 international games (7-7) entering 2026 and for the third time in the past four seasons, will play multiple games in London (vs. Houston at Wembley Stadium in Week 6).
Chicago (3-1) at Green Bay (2-2) (1 p.m. ET, FOX): Each of the past five matchups between the Bears and Packers have been decided by one score (eight points or fewer), including Chicago’s 22-16 overtime win in Week 16 last season. This season, Chicago leads the NFL in total offense (429 yards per game), rushing offense (196.3 yards per game) and time of possession (36:36).
Las Vegas (3-1) at New England (2-2) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Las Vegas is one of two teams, along with Detroit, to score at least 26 points in each of the first four weeks of the season and can win four of their first five games of a season for the first time since 2016. The Patriots, including the postseason, have won nine of their past 10 home games, including a 20-3 win over Pittsburgh in Week 2 this season.
Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins ranks tied for first with 11 touchdown passes in 2026 and can join Tom Brady (2015 with New England) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (2014 with Denver) as the only quarterbacks age 38-or-older with multiple touchdown passes in each of his team’s first five games of a season.
Baltimore (3-1) at Atlanta (2-2) (Sunday night, 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC): The Falcons are set to play in primetime for the third consecutive week after defeating Green Bay, 35-14, on Thursday Night Football in Week 3 and New Orleans, 45-24, on Monday Night Football in Week 4.
Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson has at least 145 scrimmage yards in each of his past four primetime games and his 764 scrimmage yards over that span are the most by any player in a span of four primetime games all-time.
Since 2023, Robinson (6,262 scrimmage yards) and Baltimore’s Derrick Henry (5,658) rank first and second, respectively, in scrimmage yards.
Henry ranks tied for first with seven rushing touchdowns this season, including at least one touchdown in every game in 2026. Henry has a touchdown in 87 career regular season games and with a touchdown in Week 5, can tie Pro Football Hall of Famer Walter Payton (88 games) and Adrian Peterson (88) for the fourth-most games with a touchdown by a running back in NFL history.
Atlanta leads the NFL in rushing defense (48.3 yards allowed per game) in 2026 and are the fourth team since 2000 to allow fewer than 50 rushing yards per game in their first four games of a season, joining the 2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (47.5), 2016 Green Bay Packers (42.8) and 2000 Baltimore Ravens (46.5).

EAGLES CONSIDER LIMITING DT JALEN CARTER’S REPS
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio allowed it’s possible defensive tackle Jalen Carter is on the field too much given he’s virtually playing with one hand.
Carter is playing with a hairline fracture in his right wrist while leading his position group in total snaps played. Fangio said Carter negatively was impacted last week against the Rams for the first time since he was injured Week 1.
“I think it affected him more this past game than it had been, which is to be expected in a way,” Fangio said. “It’s hard enough to play this game with two hands. When you have a cast on one it’s going to have a negative effect at some point.”
Carter said his ability to strike with power to free himself from blocks and overall hand usage becomes more challenging with his wrist wrapped. But that will be necessary for a “few more weeks,” he said.
Carter’s size and power are a natural crease to the quarterback for teammates even if Carter himself doesn’t get pressure. His overall usage has declined since Week 1.
Some of the concern goes to total snaps for the defense as a whole. Including plays not counted because of penalties, the Eagles were on the field for 83 defensive snaps last week.
Fangio said he never wants to blitz until he decides to use extra rushers and he’s confident the pass rush will develop. Philadelphia has four total sacks in four games, compared to 12 for Eagles’ opponents. Carter has 1.0 sack this season and Nolan Smith leads the team with 2.0.
Carter took down Cam Ward of the Titans in Week 2 and had near-misses on hits against Jayden Daniels (Commanders) and Matthew Stafford (Rams) last week.
The Eagles are confident those near-misses will be pressures and sacks soon enough.
“I just believe in the guys,” Fangio said. “We’ve lost two sacks the last two games due to penalties. Sometimes the ball is coming out quick. I know you guys have a love affair with the sack stat, but the ball is coming out quick.”
Last season, when the Eagles started the season 4-0, the Eagles had only 5.0 sacks through four games.
Depth is “being challenged right now” Fangio said, and the Eagles have surrendered 51 total points during the two-game losing streak with the Jaguars (3-1) up this week in London.
“In certain places we’re good. In others, you cross your fingers,” he said.
One candidate for a breakout on the interior defensive line is tackle Jordan Davis.
“Based on the protection, pushing the pocket is important. I think he’s more than capable, we just haven’t given him enough opportunity,” Fangio said.

CARDINALS LT PARIS JOHNSON JR. (BICEPS) OUT FOR SEASON
Arizona Cardinals starting left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. will be placed on injured reserve for the third straight year and miss the remainder of the season with a torn left biceps, head coach Mike LaFleur announced.
Johnson sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Arizona’s 36-24 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.
“I don’t know exactly when (surgery is) going to happen, but it’s going to happen soon to get the process going. I know I was quick on that,” LaFleur said.
“I feel for him — just all these guys. It sucks for him, first and foremost. It sucks obviously for the Arizona Cardinals, our offense, this team. But it’s NFL football — here we are in October and the show goes on.”
Rookie Jayden Williams, who was a seventh-round pick out of Mississippi, replaced Johnson on Sunday.
Johnson, 25, started all four of his games this season and all 47 in which he has played since being selected by the Cardinals with the sixth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State.
The Cardinals (1-3) host the Lions (2-2) on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.

FORMER TCU, ALABAMA, TEXAS A&M COACH DENNIS FRANCHIONE DIES
Dennis Franchione, who served as the head coach at Texas A&M, Alabama and TCU among other schools, has died at the age of 75.
TCU confirmed his passing on Tuesday over social media.
Franchione had been diagnosed with cancer in both 2016 and 2021. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the cancer returned earlier this year and that Franchione recently had been put in hospice.
He posted a 127-110 record as a head coach at New Mexico (1992-97), TCU (1998-2000), Alabama (2001-02), Texas A&M (2003-07) and Texas State (2012-15). His victory total raises to 213 when including stops at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas (1981-82), Pittsburg State (1985-89) and Southwest Texas State (1990-91).
Franchione began his coaching career as an assistant at Kansas State in 1978 before becoming the head coach at New Mexico in 1992. He spent six seasons with the Lobos before taking over at TCU, with LaDainian Tomlinson guiding the club to three straight winning seasons.
“Our program’s thoughts and prayers are with the Franchione family as well as all those whose lives he impacted,” Horned Frogs head coach Sonny Dykes said. “Coach was a true gentleman who loved his time at TCU and set the program on the path to all of the great success that has followed. College football is in a better place for having Dennis Franchione’s influence on it, and today is a great loss to all who knew him.”
Franchione elected to jump to Alabama in 2001, helping the school win the Independence Bowl that year and 10 games in 2002.
Franchione opted to leave the Crimson Tide with NCAA sanctions looming for violations under former head coach Mike DuBose, and replaced R.C. Slocum at Texas A&M.
Franchione was fired by the Aggies after the 2007 season after acknowledging his personal assistant was sending inside information to boosters for payment.
He was hired by Texas State and spent four seasons with the Bobcats before stepped down in 2015.

COLTS FOOTBALL
REPORT: COLTS DE ARDEN KEY (HAMSTRING) OUT 3-4 WEEKS
Indianapolis Colts starting defensive end Arden Key is expected to miss three to four weeks because of a hamstring injury, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen had said Monday that Key would miss “some time” after getting hurt in the 30-13 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday in London.
Jaylahn Tuimoloau, a 2025 second-round draft pick with no starting experience, and George Gumbs Jr., a 2026 fifth-round pick who has yet to play in a game, are listed behind Key on the Indianapolis depth chart.
Key, 30, has eight tackles, one forced fumble, one-half sack and three quarterback hits in four starts in his first season with Indianapolis (2-2). He signed as a free agent in March.
For his career, Key has 200 tackles, 31 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, 99 QB hits, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 120 regular-season games (50 starts) for the Raiders (2018-20), San Francisco 49ers (2021), Jacksonville Jaguars (2022), Tennessee Titans (2023-25) and Colts.
The Oakland Raiders selected Key in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of LSU.

COLTS SIGN WR QUEZ WATKINS TO PRACTICE SQUAD; RELEASE CB ELIJAH CULP FROM PRACTICE SQUAD
The Indianapolis Colts today signed wide receiver Quez Watkins to the practice squad and released cornerback Elijah Culp from the practice squad.
Watkins, 6-0, 193 pounds, has played in 49 career games (25 starts) in his time with the Philadelphia Eagles (2020-23, 2025), Arizona Cardinals (2025) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2024). He has totaled 98 receptions for 1,249 yards (12.7 avg.) and six touchdowns. Watkins has also registered 14 kickoff returns for 200 yards (14.3 avg.). He has appeared in five postseason contests (one start) and has caught six passes for 55 yards (9.2 avg.). Watkins was originally selected by the Eagles in the sixth round (200th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Southern Miss. In 2025, he spent most of the season on Philadelphia’s practice squad but did not see game action.
Culp, 5-11, 190 pounds, was signed to the team’s practice squad on September 29, 2026. He participated in the Cardinals’ 2026 offseason program and training camp after originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2026. Collegiately, Culp spent time at James Madison (2025), Charlotte (2023-24), Troy (2021-22) and Austin Peay (2020). He played in 53 career games (35 starts) and compiled 128 tackles (91 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, 21 passes defensed and five interceptions.

With defensive end Arden Key set to miss time due to a hamstring injury, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo knows everyone has to be ready to step in. He plans to have rookie George Gumbs Jr. rotate in more at practice throughout the week, and he’s impressed with how Jaylahn Tuimoloau has played thus far. Anarumo also gives an evaluation on cornerback Sauce Gardner’s Week 4 performance. Finally, he highlights defensive tackles DeForest Buckner and Adetomiwa Adebawore and how well the two play off each other at the interior.
##############
Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter knows the offense has several things to clean up, including quarterback Daniel Jones’ turnover struggles the first four weeks of the season. Cooter is proud of how the offense battled back from a rough start against the Washington Commanders, especially the success of the run game. Cooter believes the struggles start with him, and he plans to fix them starting with himself. He recalls the Colts road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, especially the loud, rowdy environment from the fans in Pittsburgh.
###############
Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason debriefs his unit’s Week 4 performance across the Washington Commanders. Mason is looking to ease Spencer Shrader back into the kickoff role, but is happy with how Rigoberto Sanchez has performed in it the last two weeks. Like many others in the building, Mason has benefited from Adetomiwa Adebawore and the havoc he can wreak on special teams and believes he is the best defensive tackle on special teams in the NFL. Finally, Mason shares his observations of Anthony Gould in the return game the last few weeks and what makes him a staple at the position.

INDIANA PACERS
GAME PREVIEW: PACERS VS TIMBERWOLVES (PRESEASON)
A little over a week after starting training camp, the Pacers will play their first preseason game on Wednesday night in Ames, Iowa. It will be a special night for Tyrese Haliburton, who not only is returning to his alma mater of Iowa State, but also playing his first game against in NBA opponent in 16 months.
Haliburton is back on the court after sitting out last season to recover from tearing his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. He played in Sunday’s 12-minute scrimmage at the annual Pacers FanJam and looked good, tallying eight points and four assists. Wednesday’s game will be the next step in his return and it will come at a familiar venue, the one where he starred for the Cyclones for two years before declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft.
The focus for the Pacers this month has been reintegrating Haliburton and working in a few new pieces to an otherwise intact core from the team that captured the 2025 Eastern Conference title.
New center Ivica Zubac played in five games last season, but is playing for the first time alongside Haliburton and All-Star forward Pascal Siakam. New forward Kelly Oubre Jr. is stepping into the bench scoring role that formerly belonged to Bennedict Mathurin (who was traded to acquire Zubac from the Clippers) and had a strong showing at FanJam, scoring 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. New backup big man Larry Nance Jr. is also expected to contribute, but has been limited early in camp by a minor hamstring injury.
The Timberwolves also have a new look this season. They acquired All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball from Charlotte in a four-team deal that sent Julius Randle to Brooklyn, giving All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards a new backcourt partner. Minnesota also signed former Warriors and Hawks forward Jonathan Kuminga in free agency to add some more scoring punch to its offense.
Probable Starters
Pacers: G – Tyrese Haliburton, G – Andrew Nemhard, F – Aaron Nesmith, F – Pascal Siakam, C – Ivica Zubac
Timberwolves: G – LaMelo Ball, G – Anthony Edwards, F – Jonathan Kuminga, F – Jaden McDaniels, C – Rudy Gobert

Ethan Thompson led Indiana with 17 points in the loss, going 4-for-8 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Obi Toppin and Jalen Slawson added 14 points apiece, Jay Huff scored 12, and Jarace Walker contributed 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Ayo Dosunmu had a game-high 24 points for Minnesota. Julius Randle and Bones Hyland added 19 points apiece.

QUICK HITS
The Irish enter year two of the Brock Sheahan (‘08) era, as the alum took over as Catalino Family Head Hockey Coach of his alma mater prior to the 2025-26 season, becoming the fifth head coach in the program’s modern history.
The Irish welcome nine new faces to the team for the 2026-27 season, including five transfers in juniors Michael Quinn (defenseman), Leo Gruba (defenseman), Hagen Burrows (forward) and Toby Hopp (goaltender), and sophomore forward David Klee.
The Irish freshman class consists of four skaters in Sammy Nelson (forward), Beckham Edwards (forward), Danny Klaers (defenseman) and Patrick Quinlan (goaltender).
The current Irish roster features nine NHL draft picks with Beckham Edwards’ selection by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft marking the 100th individual in program history to be drafted.
Other draftees include Brennan Ali (DET ‘22), Danny Nelson (NYI ‘23), Paul Fischer (STL/EDM ‘23), Cole Brown (NJD ‘23), David Klee (SJS ‘23), Nicholas Kempf (WSH ‘24) Hagen Burrows (TBL ‘24) and Will Belle (TOR ‘25).
The Irish concluded their 2025-26 regular-season slate with three straight wins, all coming in overtime, including a victory against then-fifth ranked Penn State. The win marked Coach Sheahan’s first career win over a ranked opponent. Notre Dame then completed a road sweep of Ohio State in the final series of the regular season, marking the first time in program history the team won three consecutive games in overtime.
NOTRE DAME vs. NIAGARA
The two teams have met five times previously with the Irish owning a 3-1-1 edge all-time.
The weekend series will mark the fifth and sixth times the two sides will face off in South Bend with the Irish holding an advantage with a mark of 3-1-0.
The Irish last Niagara during the 2021-22 season, splitting a pair of games in Compton Family Ice Arena. The Purple Eagles won game one by a score of 3-1 before the Irish took game two by a score of 5-0.
Notre Dame has outscored Niagara by a margin of 22-9 over the five previous matchups.
2026-27 CAPTAINS
The Irish announced two leaders ahead of the 2026-27 season, featuring a captain and alternate captain.
Senior forward Danny Nelson will serve as the captain for the second straight season.
Nelson becomes the first Fighting Irish skater to be named a captain in multiple seasons since Steven Fogarty in 2014-15 & 2015-16 and the 14th player in program history to be a captain multiple seasons.
Nelson produced a career-high 29 points during his junior season, totaling 13 goals and 16 assists. The forward was exceptional on the power play, scoring a team-best seven goals in the 2025-26 campaign.
Paul Fischer will assume the role as the alternate captain for the second consecutive season.

Notre Dame unofficially opened the season last weekend with two tuneups at Compton Family Ice Arena.
The Irish defeated the USNTDP on Friday evening by a score of 4-2 and then picked up an overtime win over the University of Toronto on Saturday by a score of 2-1.
Will Belle scored twice in the first period in the win over the USNTDP and Evan Werner and Sammy Nelson each notched goal of their own in the contest.
Cole Brown scored in the final five minutes of regulation to equalize against Toronto before Paul Fischer won it for the Irish in the first minute of overtime in a 4-on-3 power play.
Nicholas Kempf got the win in between the pipes in Friday’s game and Patrick Quinlan picked up the win on Saturday.
RETURNING POINTS leader
Notre Dame’s top point producer from the 2025-26 season returns for his senior season, as Evan Werner recorded a career-high 34 points last year to pace the Fighting Irish.
Werner posted career-highs in both goals and assists with 17 apiece.
The junior posted his first career hat trick in his first season with the Fighting Irish with three goals against Wisconsin.
Werner also finished the season with three games of four points (St. Lawrence – 10/16/25, Wisconsin – 2/6/26, Ohio State – 3/5/26).
The Texas native recorded multiple points in seven games during the 2025-26 campaign.
THE NELSON TRIO
Notre Dame features three brothers on this season’s team as Henry (oldest), Danny (middle) and Sammy Nelson (youngest) will all see plenty of ice for the Irish during the 2026-27 campaign.
Danny finished his junior season tied for second on the team in goals with 13 while adding 16 assists for 29 points.
Danny scored seven of his goals on the power play to rank 12th in the country for power play goals. He enters this season with 14 power play goals in his career which ties him for the fourth most in the country of active players at the DI level.
Henry played in all 37 games for the Fighting Irish during his junior season in South Bend.
The defenseman posted a career-high 13 points, coming from three goals and 10 assists.
Henry scored goals against Arizona State, St. Lawrence and Bowling Green.
Sammy is the most highly touted of the three brothers, as he is a projected first round pick in the 2027 NHL draft.

BALL STATE FOOTBALL
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State football will take a break from conference play this week with a nonconference matchup at Northwestern on Saturday. Head coach Mike Uremovich, along with Jamarion McDougle and Gavin Forsha, met with the media Monday to discuss the challenge of facing Northwestern.
Uremovich talked about the challenge of facing the Wildcats, as the program is riding off a 34-13 victory over Penn State last Friday.
“It’s a big challenge for us to go on the road and play well up there in a tough environment,” Uremovich said. “We’re going to hopefully stay healthy this week and get some guys back and be ready to go compete.”
Uremovich described the importance of finding success early in drives to avoid allowing Northwestern’s pass rush to take over.
“We have to stay ahead of the chains because we can’t be in third-and-long against what they do with their blitz package on third down,” Uremovich said. “They just out-execute everybody.”
The Cardinals prepare for a unique Wildcats offense that is coming off a 506-yard performance against the Nittany Lions.
“[Northwestern] runs plays that people don’t see very often and don’t defend very often,” Uremovich said. “We have to know our rules and we have to teach some new rules for some of the things they’re doing this week. It’s going to be new stuff that we haven’t practiced a ton against.”
Forsha reiterated the importance of staying focused on defense and sticking to the game plan.
“We really have to stay locked in on our keys and can’t get wandering eyes,” Forsha said. “We need to be detailed and do our assignment every single play.”
Offensively, Ball State looks to build off last week’s first-half success. The unit strung together a 10-play, 75-yard opening drive to take a 7-0 lead against Toledo.
“We were able to do that because we played with each other,” McDougle said. “We were playing together and I feel like we are building off of each other. We just need to keep working hard.”
The Cardinals viewed last week’s matchup as a step toward moving the team in the right direction.
“I think Toledo was a good stepping stone in the right direction for us and I think we should build upon it and see where next week takes us,” Forsha said. “We played Toledo close for a lot of the game and I feel like we have a lot of stuff to build on.”
The Cardinals will travel to Evanston, Ill. on Oct. 10, with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The game will be available on Big Ten Network and WLBC 104.5.

The Bulldogs have started PFL play at 2-0, winning at Davidson 51-32 and at home against Dayton 30-22.
Head coach Matt Walker is in his first season in Des Moines after leading Wisconsin-River falls to the Division-III national championship last season.
A Beacon Blowout
Valpo’s 37-3 win at Morehead State was among the program’s most lopsided victories in league play since the Pioneer Football League was formed in 1993.
The 34-point margin of victory tied for Valpo’s second largest in a PFL game. The record is 44 on Nov. 13, 2021, a 47-3 win at Butler. The win over the Eagles tied with an Oct. 14, 2017 home win over Marist (49-15) for second on that list.
The 34-point margin of defeat was Morehead State’s largest in a home game since 2023, a 49-7 loss to Butler.
The 37 points marked Valpo’s highest output in a league game since Nov. 12, 2022, a 45-24 win at Marist.
The three points allowed tied a program record for fewest points allowed in a PFL game. This marked just the third time Valpo has held a PFL opponent to three points or fewer, joining Nov. 13, 2021 at Butler and Nov. 8, 2014 vs. Butler.
The three points tied for the fewest allowed by Valpo in a league game since 1984, a 31-0 win over Saint Joseph in Heartland Collegiate Conference action.
Morehead State was held to three points or fewer on its home field for the first time since 2009, a 39-0 loss to Jacksonville.
Getting It Done on the Road
Winning on the road is never easy, and worth celebrating for a Valpo program that was 1-19 in its last 20 road games prior to the blowout win at Morehead State on Oct. 3.
The game at Morehead State marked the program’s second road win since Nov. 12, 2022 at Marist (45-24) and first since Oct. 26, 2024 at Marist (17-14).
Valpo picked up its fourth-ever win in 16 trips to Morehead, Ky. and won at Morehead State for just the second time since 2006. The victory was Valpo’s sixth in 32 all-time matchups overall.
Return to Sender
Chris Gundy broke a 60-year-old program record with his 95-yard punt return touchdown at Morehead State on Oct. 3. He outdid Tom Dohrmann’s 92-yard return from Sept. 17, 1966 at Wabash.
Gundy’s punt return broke the Pioneer Football League record as well, outdoing the previous record of 94 that was set by Davidson’s Toms Bernhards-Callahan and Jacksonville’s D’Andre Randle in 2011.
Gundy, who also ripped off a 36-yard kickoff return and totaled 108 punt return yards on two opportunities, was named the Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season after his big day against the Eagles. He also earned Honorable Mention for Stats Perform National FCS Special Teams Player of the Week.
Gundy’s punt return touchdown was his third of the season, making him the NCAA leader across all divisions (FCS, FBS, Division-II and Division-III). He is the first player in program history with multiple punt return TDs in a single season.
Gundy’s 95-yard punt return is a full 13 yards longer than the second-longest nationally in FCS this season. Gundy’s 95-yard return is the longest in the NCAA nation (FBS, FCS, D-II, D-III) this season.
In the last 12 seasons, Gundy’s 95-yard punt return is the second-longest nationally in FCS behind only Elijah Kennedy (North Carolina A&T)’s 96-yarder on Oct. 25, 2025.
Gundy tied the PFL record for punt return touchdowns in a season, equaling a mark set by Jacksonville’s Elliott Finkley in 2008.
Gundy leads the FCS nation in punt return average at 30.0, well ahead of second at 23.3. He ranks second in all of Division-I behind Florida’s Vernell Brown III (34.6).
The current FCS record for season punt return average (minimum 1.2 returns per game) is 26.5 set by Curtis DeLoatch of N.C. A&T in 2001.
With 270 total punt return yards on the season, Gundy already ranks fourth in program history for single-season punt return yards and has the most since Ray Hiller’s program-record 316 in 1998.
As a team, Valpo has four punt return TDs on the season, the only FCS team with more than two. Valpo leads the NCAA nation outright as the only team across all four levels with four punt return scores this season.
Valpo has broken the PFL record for team punt return touchdowns in a season. Several schools previously shared the record, most recently Jacksonville with three PR TDs in 2008.
Takeaway Time
Valpo had four takeaways and no turnovers in the Oct. 3 win at Morehead State, marking the first time Valpo was +4 or better in turnover margin since 2017 vs. Morehead State (+5, 6-1).
Valpo had its first PFL game with four or more takeaways since 2019 vs. Stetson.
This was Valpo’s first three-interception game since Nov. 11, 2023 vs. Stetson.
Wyatt Little’s interception was the second of his career, and both have come against Morehead State.
Jason Salman made his second pick of the season, as he also had one against Lawrence Tech. He became the first Beacon with multiple this year.
Connor Cervantes made the first interception of his collegiate career.
Backfield Beacons
Max Samuel is tied for first nationally with 11.5 tackles for loss (2.30 per game) this season, joining Stony Brook’s Khalid Bueno. Samuel and Bueno are tied for the national lead in all of Division-I college football, FBS and FCS.
Samuel is also the PFL leader in sacks per game with 0.90, ranking ninth nationally.
Samuel’s 3.5 tackles for loss in the game against Butler tied for the 11th most nationally in FCS this season. He has at least two tackles for loss in four of his five games this season.
As a team, the Beacons rank second in the PFL and 27th nationally with 5.8 TFL/game.
Valpo owns a PFL-best 2.40 sacks per game, ranking 23rd nationally.
Punting Prowess
Valpo punter Will Orlando boomed a 62-yard punt on Oct. 3 at Morehead State, Valpo’s longest since Sam Johnson sent one 65 yards on Sept. 7, 2024 at Youngstown State.
Orlando averaged a career-best 48.5 yards per punt against the Golden Eagles, setting a personal best for the second straight week.

Valpo outgained Morehead State 389-251. The Beacons rushed for 161 yards and threw for 228.
The 389 yards of total offense marked a season high and the team’s most in a game since the 2025 season opener vs. Virginia Lynchburg. The 389 total yards marked Valpo’s highest accumulation in a PFL game since Nov. 12, 2022 at Marist (460).
Luke Scoma made two of his three field-goal tries (one blocked) and went 4-for-4 on PATs. Talan Samosky made his first field-goal try in a Valpo uniform.
Daniel White became the first Valpo player with multiple touchdown catches this season. Colin Hayes’ TD reception was the third of his career and his first of the season.
Making his first career start at running back, Cedric Benning III had his second TD run of the season and accumulated a season-high 91 yards on the ground on 18 carries. Valpo quarterbacks combined for another 53 rushing yards as each QB had eight rushes.
Rowan Keefe went 14-for-21 for 174 yards, while Noah Ehrlich went 5-for-7 for 54.
Marty O’Keeffe squeezed three catches for a team-high 90 yards, while White collected a team-high four grabs for 62 yards on a day where 11 different Beacons caught passes.
After entering the game already ranked second nationally in tackles for loss per game and leading all D1 linebackers, Max Samuel racked up another 2.5 tackles for loss including a sack. He and Nic Lendino shared the team lead with six stops apiece.
Valpo went 10-of-18 on third down, while the Valpo defense limited Morehead State to 2-of-11 on third down and 0-of-3 on fourth down. Morehead State did not have any third-down conversions until the final drive of the game.
The Eagles actually held a 118-27 advantage in total offense in the first quarter before the Beacons outgained them 362-133 the rest of the way.
The good day for the Beacons started from the outset, when the team snapped a streak of losing the coin toss in 15 consecutive games by winning the toss and electing to defer their choice to the second half.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF
Junior Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township) boasted the team’s top score for both the round and the tournament as the Valparaiso University men’s golf team closed out Belmont’s Kemper Lakes Intercollegiate with the third and final round on Tuesday at the challenging par-72, 7217-yard Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Ill.
How It Happened
Politza posted a 54-hole score of 230, tied for 21st of 78 in the field. He moved up nine spots on the leaderboard with his showing on Tuesday, which featured a 75 (+5), his best score of the tournament.
Politza edged out freshman Tyler Samaan (Elgin, Ill. / Burlington) for the team’s top score, as the rookie needed 231 strokes to complete the course, finishing 26th overall after his best round of the event with a 76 on Tuesday. After teeing off from Hole 10, Samaan was even at the turn thanks to a birdie on 18.
Redshirt senior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) posted a 7-over 79 in the final round to finish the tournament at t-27 with a 232.
Drake’s Jake Weissenburger was the individual medalist by five strokes with a 211, leading the Bulldogs to the team title with an 886.
Valpo finished sixth of 12 at 929, carding a 309 in the final round. The Beacons beat Loyola Chicago, conference foe Illinois State, Weber State, Central Michigan, Bellarmine and Eastern Illinois.
Thoughts From Head Coach Dave Gring
“The Kemper Lakes Golf Course provided another solid challenge for us today. The wind picked up and was around 10 mph for most of the day. While that speed is nothing crazy, it added another condition variable that caused scores to be higher across the entire tournament field. The guys managed the wind decently, especially with the amount of water hazards on the golf course. We had our challenges in hitting fairways and greens in regulation, so that still is an area that we need to improve. While we had a good start to today’s round, we still played the Par 3s at +10 and Holes 5 and 6 that were into the wind to finish the round at +7.”
“Both Tyler and Rob closed the final round with their best rounds of the tournament. Rob had four birdies on the day and Tyler grinded out 12 pars and one birdie. Ryan was able to put together birdies on all four of the Par 5s, with terrific course management and shot execution. We’re going to need to spend some quality time over these next two weeks and before our final fall tournament working on driving accuracy and approach shots proximity. We will look forward to finishing the fall season strong!”
