RAYS RACE PAST ERROR-PRONE YANKEES FOR 2-0 ALDS ADVANTAGE

Richie Palacios ripped a two-run single to highlight a four-run fifth inning, fueling the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla., and a two-games-to-none edge in an American League Division Series.

Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero each had two hits and a run for the Rays, who are in control of the best-of-five series. Game 3 is Wednesday in New York.

“We match up with anyone,” Palacios said on MLB Network. “We go out there and work. We have sacrificed a lot this season, so we match up with anyone and we don’t care who is out there.”

The Yankees did themselves no favors by committing four errors, including three in the first inning.

“A really rough night to say the least for us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We’ve got to get over it. We’ve responded all year to difficult times, and we’ve got to do it again.”

New York’s lone bright spot was Ben Rice, who hit solo homers in the fourth and eighth innings. He has two multi-homer games in this postseason.

In a 1-1 game, Aranda singled to lead off the fifth inning, advanced to third base on Caminero’s single and scored on Liam Hicks’ slow grounder to second base. Caminero moved to third base on the play and scored on Chandler Simpson’s infield single.

Brent Headrick relieved Cam Schlittler (1-1) and struck out the first batter he faced before an error by shortstop George Lombard Jr. on a ball hit by Jonny DeLuca extended the inning. DeLuca then stole second. Palacios, a New York native, then drove a line-drive single to center field on a 3-2 pitch, plating both runners and boosting the Rays’ lead to 5-1.

“I was able to lay off a couple pitches and get to 3-0,” Palacios said. “(Rays manager Kevin) Cash gave me the green light. I just took a hell-hack on a 3-0 pitch high. After that, I was able to settle down and get a pitch over the middle of the plate, and I put a good swing on it.”

Schlittler was charged for four runs (two earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Cam Booser (1-0) relieved Rays starter Freddy Peralta and induced Cody Bellinger to fly out with the bases loaded to end the top of the fifth inning.

Ian Seymour struck out four batters while allowing just one hit, Rice’s second homer, in three innings. Bryan Baker tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his second save in as many games of the series.

Sloppy defense by New York led to Tampa Bay opening the scoring in the first inning. Yandy Diaz reached base after third baseman Ryan McMahon failed to handle a routine grounder. Diaz advanced to second on a single by Aranda and scored after a throw by second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. in a bid to complete a double play sailed wide of first base.

“Not great. Not how you draw it up,” McMahon said. “I thought Cam did a great job trying to pitch through all that stuff.”

Looking ahead to the series’ shift to Yankee Stadium, Boone said, “Whatever it takes, we’ve got to do it offensively and we’ve gotta be able to score some runs and do a better job of preventing than we did tonight.”

SIXTH-INNING RALLY GIVES WHITE SOX 2-0 ALDS LEAD ON GUARDIANS

CLEVELAND — Braden Montgomery delivered the go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning and Chase Meidroth followed with an RBI to send the Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday afternoon.

“I can’t even describe how it felt,” Montgomery said. “It’s exhilarating. I was just taking it all in.”

Chicago leads the best-of-five series 2-0 and can advance to its first AL Championship Series since 2005 with a win on Wednesday at home. The White Sox have won all four of their postseason games after claiming the league’s final wild-card berth.

“Our club has been confident the entire year, regardless of the previous result,” White Sox manager Will Venable said. “They come in ready to play and turn the page. Now, we’re really excited to get playoff baseball to our fans.

Montgomery’s two-out, opposite-field double off Erik Sabrowski (0-1) landed just inside the foul line in right to drive in Miguel Vargas and Randal Grichuk. Hunter Gaddis entered and allowed Meidroth’s opposite-field hit that plated Montgomery to extend the White Sox’s lead to 4-2.

“I was just ready for something to attack, and I was ready for his hardest stuff,” Montgomery said of his big hit. “I gave myself my best chance to succeed.”

Sean Burke (1-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run, one-hit relief for the win, retiring 13 straight batters from the fourth to the eighth. Grant Taylor earned his second save in the series by working 1 1/3 innings and wrapping up the combined four-hitter.

“I was able to settle in and find my groove,” Burke said. “I’ve had openers before, but not in this situation, so I talked with a lot of guys. It’s just normal baseball when you get into that game.”

Cleveland, which scored the first two runs of the contest, pulled within 4-3 in the eighth on Jo Adell’s triple off Taylor. Chase DeLauter chased Burke with a two-out single, then scored on Adell’s drive high off the wall in center.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out a career postseason-high 11 over five-plus innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three walks. The right-hander fell one shy of the franchise strikeout record by Charles Nagy against the Baltimore Orioles in the 1996 ALDS.

“I don’t think there is any pressure on us,” Williams said. “We know what we have to do and we’re going to do it. I’d come out of the bullpen in Game 3, if I was allowed to.”

Cleveland went up 2-0 in the first on an error by pitcher Sean Newcomb, who threw wide of first base on a high chopper by Nathaniel Lowe. Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez came home after reaching against opener Anthony Kay.

Rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami got the White Sox on the board in the fourth with a sharp single to right that scored Kyle Teel, who led off the inning with a single that was the first hit against Williams.

Williams topped 100 mph eight times in the first two innings — doubling his career high for a game — and reached triple digits on 18 of his 98 pitches. He had the 37 fastest pitches of the contest when he departed after Vargas’ leadoff single in the sixth.

Kay, pitching for the third time in the postseason, faced three batters. The left-hander worked one-third of an inning and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and a walk.

In Game 1, Murakami hit a two-run homer and five Chicago pitchers combined for a three-hitter in a 3-0 victory.

BIJAN ROBINSON (2 TDS), FALCONS SPOIL SAINTS’ HOMECOMING ANNIVERSARY

Bijan Robinson rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns, Brian Robinson Jr. ran for three scores and the visiting Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints 45-24 on Monday night.

Bijan Robinson set the tone with a 59-yard touchdown run on the third play from scrimmage, deflating a sellout crowd that was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Saints’ 23-3 Monday Night Football victory over the Falcons in the first game in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.

Brian Robinson added 62 rushing yards for the Falcons (2-2), who had a second consecutive lopsided road victory, 11 days after a 35-14 win against Green Bay.

Tyler Shough passed for 286 yards but needed 48 attempts to do so as the Saints (1-3) failed to score through the air until the final two minutes.

The Saints received the second-half kickoff and produced a 13-play drive before stalling at the 8, and Daniel Carlson kicked a 27-yard field goal to cut the Falcons’ lead to 24-10.

Atlanta answered with Brian Robinson’s 8-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 31-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Alvin Kamara ran 5 yards for his second touchdown in the fourth, but New Orleans had just 50 yards on the ground against the Falcons’ top-ranked run defense.

Michael Penix Jr., who completed 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards, threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jahan Dotson, and Brian Robinson ran 11 yards for Atlanta’s final score. Shough threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele with 1:13 left.

After Kendre Miller’s fumble on the Saints’ third possession, Bijan Robinson ran 4 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Shough’s 44-yard pass completion to Chris Olave on the penultimate play of the first quarter led to Kamara’s 3-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, trimming the Saints’ deficit to 14-7.

The Falcons answered on the ensuing possession with Brian Robinson’s 4-yard scoring run to regain a 14-point lead. Nick Folk added a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead to 24-7 at halftime.

COMMANDERS QB SHUFFLE: JAYDEN DANIELS TO PRACTICE, MARCUS MARIOTA HURT

Quarterback Jayden Daniels will be back to work on the practice field this week, Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Monday, good  news for the team considering backup QB Marcus Mariota sprained his right medial collateral ligament Sunday.

Mariota came out of the Commanders’ game against the Indianapolis Colts in London for good after getting hurt on a first-quarter sack. That play was the last one before Washington kicked a field goal to take a 6-0 lead, but Indianapolis rallied for a 30-13 victory.

“He’ll be working off to the side as it goes through the next week or so,” Quinn said of Mariota, who hurt the same ligament in the same knee in Washington’s preseason opener this summer.

Looking ahead to the possibility of Daniels being back under center this week to face the visiting New York Giants, Quinn said, “The goal is for him to have a full week of practice, a full week and start on Sunday.”

Mariota, in his brief action Sunday, completed 3 of 4 passes for 46 yards. Third-stringer Athan Kaliakmanis, a rookie out of Rutgers, connected on 15 of 33 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and one interception in relief.

The Commanders (1-3) went 1-1 with Mariota, 32, as their starter after Daniels dislocated his left (non-throwing) elbow in Week 2. He is 33-for-51 for 340 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions this year.Game recap articles

In NFL action for the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington, Mariota has a 37-47 record as a starter to go with an overall 62.8% completion rate, 18,219 yards, 111 TDs and 62 interceptions.

Daniels, 25, threw two TD passes as Washington lost its season opener at Philadelphia before getting hurt the following week in a defeat at Dallas. He is 29-for-51 for 260 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in 2026. Daniels, 14-12 in his career as a starter, owns a 65.9% completion rate, 5,090 passing yards, 36 scoring passes and 12 picks.

REPORT: CHIEFS WR TYQUAN THORNTON (ANKLE) OUT 3-4 MONTHS

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton faces a recovery timeline of 3-4 months after suffering a gruesome ankle injury on Sunday, NFL Network reported.

Reports said that Thornton sustained a dislocated left ankle that doctors put back in place. Per NFL Network, the Chiefs are optimistic that Thornton may return by the end of the regular season or at least in time for the playoffs.

Thornton was hurt at the end of a 55-yard reception. He reeled in a pass from Patrick Mahomes and streaked toward the end zone before Treydan Stukes tackled him from behind, and the two got twisted as they fell to the ground.

Thornton celebrated the catch by raising his right arm toward the stands. But he crumbled to the ground as soon as he tried to stand, and his left ankle was twisted in the other direction.

Kansas City also lost wide receiver Rashee Rice in that 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, but NFL Network reported that his hamstring injury is considered minor. The Chiefs have their bye in Week 5, and it’s possible Rice will be ready to return in time for Week 6.

REPORT: EAGLES RB TANK BIGSBY TO IR WITH SAQUON BARKLEY UNCERTAIN FOR WEEK 5

Philadelphia Eagles running back Tank Bigsby needs core muscle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, ESPN reported Monday.

Bigsby suffered a core injury Sunday late in the Eagles’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He will have the procedure done in Philadelphia and the team hopes he can be back in six weeks or less, according to the report.

The injury to Philadelphia’s No. 2 running back comes at an inopportune time, as Saquon Barkley’s status is also up in the air after he left Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury.

Coach Nick Sirianni left open the possibility of Barkley playing Sunday when the Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

“I know he’ll do everything he can do to get himself back. Obviously, he’s a great player and a great teammate, and we always need him on the field,” Sirianni said.

Barkley was hurt on his second carry of the game early in the first quarter and was seen limping on the sideline. However, NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that Barkley was seen walking normally as he left the stadium.

Will Shipley is the only healthy running back remaining on the Eagles’ active roster. Dameon Pierce is one of three running backs currently on their practice squad; the former Houston Texans starter is in his first year with the organization.

BENGALS WR TEE HIGGINS (ADDUCTOR) DAY-TO-DAY, COULD PLAY WEEK 5

While Ja’Marr Chase is in the league’s concussion protocol, his longtime receiving mate in Cincinnati, Tee Higgins, may not have to miss game action following his adductor injury Sunday.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Monday that Higgins is day-to-day, and he didn’t rule out the possibility that Higgins could play Week 5 at the Miami Dolphins.

“(We’ll) see where he is at this week,” Taylor told reporters.

Higgins injured his adductor following a toe-tapping sideline grab late in Cincinnati’s 22-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He left briefly and returned for one play on the Bengals’ final drive but was unable to continue.

Higgins reeled in 11 receptions for 157 yards. The 27-year-old has 25 receptions for 401 yards and one touchdown in four games this season for Cincinnati (2-2).

His production Sunday was critical after Chase, 26, was ruled out with a concussion after his head hit the turf early in the second quarter.

Chase, 26, has 21 receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns over four games this season. In six NFL seasons, all with the Bengals, the five-time Pro Bowl selection has 541 receptions for 7,049 yards and 57 touchdowns.

In his seventh season in Cincinnati, Higgins has 414 catches for 5,842 yards and 46 touchdowns. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection last year, posting a career-high 11 touchdowns.

RAVENS OPTIMISTIC QB LAMAR JACKSON ANKLE INJURY ISN’T ‘CRAZY LONG-TERM’

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is not ruled out for Week 5, a Sunday night matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, but Baltimore is bracing for his absence to stretch beyond the second half of a Week 4 win.

Ravens coach Jesse Minter said it’s too early to know what Jackson’s status could be for this week. Jackson injured his left ankle and wore a protective boot out of the stadium on Sunday night after sitting out the second half of a 24-18 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

“I really don’t think it’s going to be crazy long-term, but we’ll see what happens,” Minter said.

The Ravens (3-1) share the AFC North lead with the Cleveland Browns (3-1), who will host Baltimore on Oct. 18.

Jackson’s status won’t be updated until Wednesday afternoon, Minter said. The Ravens would start Tyler Huntley against the Falcons if Jackson isn’t available.

Huntley completed 8 of 9 passes for 63 yards in the second half to steer Baltimore past Tennessee.

Minter said Monday he didn’t “know the chances yet” that Huntley could be in line to make his 12th start with the Ravens. He’s 5-6 as a spot starter with Baltimore.

“We’re still gathering a lot of the information and the imaging and things like that, just dealing with a little bit of an ankle and we’ll kind of see where that shakes out,” Minter said of Jackson’s status. “Full trust and confidence in him that when it’s ready to roll that we’ll roll and go from there.”

BUCCANEERS SAY S ANTOINE WINFIELD JR. (RIB) OUT 2-4 WEEKS

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. will miss two to four weeks after suffering a rib fracture, coach Todd Bowles said Monday.

Winfield, 28, suffered the injury late in Tampa Bay’s 17-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday that dropped the Bucs to 0-4.

A two-time Pro Bowler (2021, 2025) and former first-team All-Pro (2023), Winfield has nine career interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, 18 sacks and 561 tackles in 89 career games (all starts). This is his seventh NFL season after being selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2020 draft.

Winfield had 24 tackles through the first four games of this season.

The Buccaneers, already playing without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield, have a short week as they prepare to visit the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday.

REPORT: CHARGERS OT RASHAWN SLATER TO MISS TIME WITH ANKLE INJURY

Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater is believed to have a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss multiple weeks, ESPN reported Monday.

Slater’s injury is yet another blow for the Chargers’ offensive line, which saw right tackle Joe Alt leave Sunday’s 30-23 loss against the Seattle Seahawks with a neck injury while left guard Trevor Penning was being checked for a concussion.

Those issues have come after new center Tyler Biadasz was lost for the season with a knee injury during training camp.

The Chargers are off to an 0-4 start as quarterback Justin Herbert has completed 59.7% of his passes, which is 24th in the NFL. He has four touchdown passes to six interceptions and has been sacked 12 times, which is one off the NFL lead.

Slater, 27, was named to the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2024. He missed the 2025 campaign after tearing a patellar tendon during camp.

He started each of the Chargers’ first four games and has started in all 55 games he has played since he was a first-round draft pick by the Chargers out of Northwestern in 2021.

VIKINGS G DONOVAN JACKSON (KNEE) LIKELY OUT FOR SEASON

Minnesota Vikings guard Donovan Jackson, who was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2025, is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a left knee injury that will require surgery, head coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday.

Jackson came away from Sunday’s 15-10 home victory over the Miami Dolphins with a torn meniscus.

After he was a standout at Ohio State, where he was named first-team All-America in 2024, Jackson was the 24th overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. He played in 14 games during his rookie season, all of them starts.

Jackson, 23, started in all four games for the Vikings this season as they have gotten off to a 4-0 start.

Also, Minnesota offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw is in concussion protocol, the team announced. Darrisaw, 27, is in his sixth season with the Vikings and also started the first four games. The team’s 2021 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) has played in 62 career games (60 starts).

REPORTS: SEAHAWKS TO SIGN RB JOE MIXON

The Seattle Seahawks are signing veteran running back Joe Mixon after he worked out for the team on Monday, according to several reports.

Seattle coach Mike Macdonald indicated Mixon would start out on the practice squad.

“We’re down runners,” Macdonald said. “We need running backs. He’s a good running back.”

Before adding Mixon, the defending champs’ only healthy running backs were Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and Velus Jones. The Seahawks (3-1) placed rookie running back Jadarian Price, the 32nd overall pick in April’s draft, on injured reserve Saturday with a chest injury.

Zach Charbonnet will get work in team drills during practice this week but won’t play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, Macdonald said.

Mixon, 30, is a two-time Pro Bowler who last played for the Houston Texans in 2024 following seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

He racked up 1,016 yards, 11 touchdowns and a Pro Bowl nod in his 14 games for the Texans. But Mixon missed the 2025 campaign due to a leg injury and was released last March.

Mixon has gained 7,428 yards and scored 60 touchdowns on the ground in 111 career games (102 starts) since entering the league in 2017. He has added another 2,448 yards and 14 touchdowns on 319 receptions.

Charbonnet, 25, has yet to make his season debut after tearing his ACL on Jan. 17 in the NFC Divisional Round defeat of the 49ers on Seattle’s path to a Super Bowl championship.

The second-round pick (52nd overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft ran for a career-high 730 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He has rushed for 1,761 yards and 21 touchdowns while catching 95 passes for 693 yards and one touchdown in 49 games (eight starts) in three years for the Seahawks.

Macdonald also shared that All-Pro defensive lineman Leonard Williams’ status is up in the air for the San Francisco game after sustaining an ankle injury in the Seahawks’ 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Williams, 32, was a Pro Bowler in each of his first two full seasons in Seattle and has 39 tackles for loss and 25 sacks in 47 games (all starts) with the Seahawks.

“We are optimistic, and we will see this week,” Macdonald said of Williams’ status.

NFL SUSPENDS TWO OFFICIALS FOR UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

The NFL on Monday suspended line judge Jeff Seeman two games and referee Adrian Hill one game for separate instances of professional conduct.

NFL vice president of officiating Ramon George issued the suspensions.

Seeman made headlines Sunday when he was caught on video saying “f– you” twice to Arizona tight Trey McBride while he worked the Cardinals’ game at the New York Giants. McBride was complaining about the lack of a pass interference call late in the game, and the video caught the attention of NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter.

“This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable,” Tretter wrote on social media. “Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.

Hill was officiating the Minnesota Vikings’ home game against the Miami Dolphins when, on a play that was whistled dead for a penalty, Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II blocked Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson into Hill, knocking him down.

Hill took umbrage and was seen yelling at Wilson to go back to his team’s huddle, though Wilson told reporters later that the situation was “funny” and Hill was “cool about it” after Wilson apologized.

NHL ROUNDUP: WITHOUT MACKLIN CELEBRINI, SHARKS BLANKED BY STARS

Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson recorded a goal and an assist apiece for the host Dallas Stars, who unloaded on the short-handed San Jose Sharks 5-0 on Monday to earn their first victory of the season.

Moments before the opening faceoff, the Sharks announced captain Macklin Celebrini was a late scratch with a lower-body injury. The move happened after the 20-year-old star center, who produced five assists as San Jose won its first two games, participated in pregame warmups.

Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger faced just 13 shots but stopped them all for his 17th career shutout. Miro Heiskanen scored his second of the season for the Stars, who managed just one goal total in their first two games. Joel Kiviranta and Mikko Rantanen also scored, and Roope Hintz notched two assists.

Yaroslav Askarov made 21 saves as he and the Sharks saw their two-game winning streaks to start the season end.

Lightning 3, Flyers 2

Ilya Mikheyev had a goal and an assist as Tampa Bay won for the second straight time on its three-game homestand, handling winless Philadelphia.

With the Lightning leading 2-1 and the Flyers pushing for the tying goal, Mikheyev skated behind the Philadelphia goal and backhanded in his first tally of the season with three minutes left. Brandon Hagel added an empty-net goal for the final margin with seven seconds left.

Tampa Bay’s Pontus Holmberg (assist) and Brayden Point netted their first goals this season, while Nikita Kucherov had two helpers and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 13 saves. Opening a three-game road trip, Philadelphia got a goal from Tyson Foerster and 32 saves from Dan Vladar but remained without a win in four matches.

Senators 4, Bruins 1

Tim Stutzle scored two first-period goals within a 1:43 span and added an assist, leading visiting Ottawa to a win over Boston..

Michael Amadio netted a goal and an assist, and Drake Batherson also scored. Linus Ullmark stopped all 10 shots he faced against his former team, but collided with Boston’s J.J. Peterka near the end of the second period and sat out the final period. Samuel Ersson entered in relief for an eight-save third.

James Hagens scored his second goal of the season, and Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who have split their first four games following back-to-back losses.

Jets 3, Penguins 2

Alex Iafallo had a goal and an assist in Winnipeg’s three-goal third period as the Jets prevailed at Pittsburgh.

Adam Lowry and Cole Perfetti also scored goals for Winnipeg. Clay Stevenson, claimed off waivers from the Washington Capitals on Sept. 28, made 30 saves in his Jets debut.

Ben Kindel and Declan Carlile each had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, which had scored 13 goals while winning its first two games of the season. Sergei Murashov made 31 saves.

FILING IN LIV GOLF BANKRUPTCY CASE FEATURES $300M INVESTMENT FROM BC PARTNERS

BC Partners Credit is investing up to $300 million to help a revamped LIV Golf continue play in 2027, an amount confirmed Monday by a court filing in LIV’s bankruptcy case.

The financing plan would have to be approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of New Jersey.

LIV filed for Chapter 11 protection last month, having completed its final season with the financial backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The withdrawal of PIF was part of a tumultuous 2026 campaign for LIV that saw the circuit cancel two tournaments, including the season-ending Team Championship.

Ted Goldthorpe, managing partner of BC Partners Credit, said in a statement, “Our goal is to facilitate LIV Golf’s emergence from the restructuring process on sound financial footing and with renewed momentum heading into the 2027 season. …

“We are excited about what this next phase can mean for the players who compete in the league. We invite those who want to help build a strong, sustainable, team golf league to join us.”

LIV CEO Scott O’Neil said, “We believe deeply in the future of this league and in the opportunity to build something distinctive alongside our players. We’re delivering on our major milestones, and while there is still work ahead, today marks meaningful progress toward a player-owned, team-focused, truly global league that complements the wider game and creates new opportunities for players, fans, partners, and the next generation of golfers.”

O’Neil previously announced plans for LIV to hold 10 events next year, half of them in the United States. A key question is how many players will commit to the tour moving forward, as a number of the circuit’s stars are owed millions in unsecured claims, per the bankruptcy filing. Among that group are Jon Rahm of Spain ($7.5 million), Bryson DeChambeau ($5.7 million), Dustin Johnson ($5.5 million), Cameron Smith of Australia ($4.8 million), Tyrrell Hatton of England ($3.4 million) and Brooks Koepka ($1.7 million). Koepka exited the league at the start of 2026.

“LIV Golf 2.0” intends to give players an ownership stake of 52.5%, with BC Partners Credit and other minority investors holding 45% equity and management receiving the other 2.5%, per Golf Channel.

The bankruptcy filing in New Jersey estimated LIV’s assets at between $100 million and $500 million, with liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion.

Setting The Scene

• Indiana will travel for its second-straight road game in Week 6 at Nebraska on Saturday (Oct. 10) at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. The game will broadcast on FOX and host the network’s pregame show, Big Noon Kickoff.

• Indiana leads the all-time series between the two programs, 11-9-3. Indiana won the last meeting, 56-7, in 2024 when the teams met on FOX in Bloomington. The last game played in Lincoln was a 35-21 win for Nebraska in 2022.

• Both teams enter the game with a 5-0 record and are among a group of only 15 remaining undefeated teams in the FBS.

News & Notes

• Curt Cignetti reached 30 wins in his first 32 games as a Power 4 head coach with the Week 3 win over Western Kentucky (9/19). Only Larry Coker (Miami (Fla.), 2001-03) and Gil Dobie (Washington, 1908-12) reached the mark faster – both doing so in 31 games. • Indiana’s 21-game winning streak is the longest nationally since Georgia won 29 consecutive games from 2021-23 and the longest in the Big Ten since Ohio State (23) from 2013-14.

• Indiana has won 32 games over the past three seasons (2024-26) which are the most in a three-year span in program history.

• IU posted its 14th game scoring at least 20 points in both halves. Indiana had done it just 15 times between 2000-23.

• The game against Rutgers marked the first time Indiana committed zero penalties and did not commit a turnover in the same game since at least 1972. In that time, IU had five games with zero penalties, most recently against Penn State at FedEx Field in 2010.

• Indiana’s two rushing scores at Rutgers marks 28 multi-rushing touchdown games since the start of 2024 (34 games).

• Tobi Osunsanmi’s blocked punt against Rutgers gives Indiana a nation’s best 10 blocked kicks since 2024.

• Indiana rushed for 329 yards against Rutgers for its eighth 300-yard rushing game over the last three seasons and first in 2026.

• The 593 yards of total offense marks the 14th game over 500 yards under Cignetti and the most in a Big Ten game during his tenure. It is the most yards of total offense in a Big Ten game since 2016 when it totaled 650 yards against Maryland. It is the most in a road Big Ten game since 2015 at Purdue (659 yards).

• With just 59 yards rushing allowed, Indiana moved its nation’s best total to 25 games with under 100 yards rushing allowed since the start of 2024. Only three FBS programs have 20-plus such games in that span: Indiana, Ohio State (22) and Miami (Fla.) (21).

• Josh Hoover threw for four touchdown passes for the third time this season against Rutgers. He is one four quarterbacks nationally with 10-plus touchdown passes and zero interceptions on the season: Maddux Madsen (Boise State), Darian Mensah (Miami (Fla.)) and Austin Simmons (Missouri).

• IU became the first Big Ten team since at least 1995 with two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers in a conference game: Turbo Richard (204 yards rushing) & Lee Beebe Jr. (122) and Charlie Becker (107 yards receiving) & Nick Marsh (120).

• Richard (204 yards; at Rutgers) and Beebe Jr. (203 yards; Northwestern) produced the first back-to-back 200-yard rushing effort at Indiana since 2014. Tevin Coleman accomplished the feat at Rutgers (310) and at Ohio State (230) in consecutive weeks. • Becker (107) and Marsh (120) both reached the 100-yard receiving mark which made them the first IU wide receiver duo since Omar Cooper Jr. (131) and Elijah Sarratt (137) versus Western Illinois in 2024 to accomplish the feat. MORE ON PAGE 9

• Becker and Marsh are the first pass catching duo to both reach 100 yards receiving in a Big Ten game since Cam Camper (156) and D.J. Matthews Jr. (109) against Illinois in 2022.

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – All eyes in the volleyball world will be on Wilkinson Hall on Thursday (Oct. 8) evening as undefeated and top-ranked Nebraska makes the trip to Bloomington for the first all top-15 home match in program history. The Hoosiers have never beaten the top-ranked team in the country.

After a tough five-set defeat at No. 6 Wisconsin last Thursday, the Indiana volleyball team (10-3, 3-1 B1G) responded with a win at Rutgers to close out the longest road trip of the entire season. IU hit .288 in the match with three players in double figures for kills. Second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager has had 10+ kills in 17 of her 24 career Big Ten matches.

When IU’s block shines bright, it usually bodes well in the win column. The Hoosiers are 6-0 this season when recording at least nine blocks. Even on a great passing night from Rutgers, IU still held the hosts to a .233 hitting percentage. Three of IU’s four Big Ten opponents this season have hit under .235 in the match.

With fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum back in the mix, IU is getting closer to finding its best lineup. Third-year outside hitter Izzy Clark is getting closer to making her season debut after missing the first 13 games of the season through injury. She has the ability to play all six rotations when she’s fully ready to go.

Both of IU’s games this week will be broadcasted live on Big Ten Network. Chris Vosters (PxP) and Mac Podraza (Color) will be on the call for Thursday’s contest at 6:30 p.m. The match is sold out to the general public with no tickets available at the door. IU will also play USC on Sunday (Oct. 11) this weekend.

A Win Would

Nebraska:

– Be the 11th win of the season and the fifth at home

– Be the highest ranked win in program history

– Be the sixth top-10 win in program history

– Be the first win over the number one team in school history

Stats and Trends

• The Hoosiers are looking for the highest-ranked win in program history.

• IU has won 19 of its last 26 Big Ten games, dating back to the final week of the 2024 season.

• Head coach Steve Aird last guided his team to a top-10 win in November of 2022 (at #5 Ohio State).

Notable

ALL INVOLVED: Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is closing in on becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. She’s less than 275 away as she continues to set the Hoosiers at an elite offensive rate. The Serbian is averaging 10.74 assists per set in her career at IU.

TALLYING WINS: Since the 2022 campaign (four-plus years), Indiana has racked up 87 wins under head coach Steve Aird. That includes at least 15 wins in each full season during that stretch. IU will be looking to reach that plateau again for the fifth-straight year in 2026.

BIG ARM BACK: IU was boosted with the return of fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum. In her three matches back with the Hoosiers, Tatum is averaging 3.17 kills per set on a .302 hitting percentage. She had a season-high 16 kills on the road at No. 6 Wisconsin at the beginning of the month.

FIRST YEAR FIRE: First-year outside hitter Sara Snowbarger was thrusted into action out of the gate and has more than held her own against stiff competition. She’s got three matches with double-digit kills including a career high 11 at No. 6 Wisconsin last week. She’s averaging 1.92 kills per set.

NEVER HAVE WE EVER: The Hoosiers are going for their first win over the top-ranked team in the country in program history. IU has five wins over top-10 programs in school history to date, all of them against Big Ten opponents. IU is 0-16 all-time against No. 1 teams – most recently a loss to Nebraska in 2025.

LOTS FROM LEFTY: Second-year libero Hannah Leftridge has flown under the radar on IU’s team. She’s had double-digit digs in six of the last seven games in her first season wearing the jersey full-time. She’s upped her defensive output by nearly 2.50 digs per set in her second season of college volleyball.

GETTING OURS: Earning your own points is the key to winning matches in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are third in the conference in points per set (17.80) during league play only. They are also third in the Big Ten during conference action in hitting percentage (.270) and assists per set (12.93)

DISHING THEM: Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is 11th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten with 10.77 assists per set this year. She has dished out 517 helpers in 13 matches this year. She is second in the Big Ten (11.33 per set) if you include conference matches only.

STARTING OFF: The NCAA ran its first official RPI rankings of the season, the biggest baseline tool in postseason selections. IU is 16th in adjusted RPI and 17th in overall RPI through the first six weeks of the year. The Big Ten was far and away ranked the top conference in college volleyball.

BLOCK WAKES UP: IU’s block came alive in a big way in the win at Rutgers. Fifth-year middle blocker Kiki Granberry is seventh in the Big Ten with 1.24 blocks per set. She is just 35 blocks away from reaching 400 for her illustrious college career. Her 51 rejections leads the team in 2026.

Scouting the Opponent

Nebraska (15-0, 4-0 Big Ten)

• Nebraska comes in off the heels of a pair of efficient sweeps over Penn State and Maryland. The undefeated Huskers have looked all the part of the number one team in the country this season. Outside hitter Harper Murray leads with 3.20 kills per set at a .252 hitting percentage.

• Middle blocker Andi Jackson is perhaps the premier player at her position in the country. She’s averaging 3.94 points per set on 2.74 kills per set and 1.38 blocks per set. She’s top five nationally with a .497 hitting percentage. Fellow middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie is also hitting above .400.

• Everything starts with setter Bergen Reilly, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year. She is averaging 10.82 assists per set. That number jumps above 11.00 during conference play. She’s also digging 2.64 balls per set. Libero Olivia Mauch leads with 3.25 digs per set.

Inside the Series

Nebraska

• One of the premier brands in college volleyball, Nebraska has maintained a steady advantage in the all-time series. IU’s only win (1978) came before the NCAA officially recognized women’s volleyball.

• Nebraska has won every match since it joined the Big Ten. The Hoosiers have taken a set in two of the last three games in Bloomington. IU had a chance to go up 2-0 in a match in 2023 but Nebraska came roaring back to win in four sets.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 5). The freshman converted a trio of field goals to help the Boilermakers knock off Illinois 24-17 on the road and win the Cannon Trophy.

Echeverria Lozano split the uprights on kicks of 30, 34 and 33 yards. It was his third game with three field goals, one game short of Mitchell Fineran for the most by a Purdue kicker over the last 25 years.

The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is 11-of-12 on the year (91.7%) with a long of 47 yards. He leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally in field goals per game at 2.2. He sits third in the league in scoring at 9.6 points per game and fourth in field goal percentage.

Echeverria Lozano and the Boilermakers return to Ross-Ade Stadium to open a two-game homestand Saturday night against Minnesota with an 8 p.m. kickoff on BTN.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL

MARCUS FREEMAN MONDAY PRESSER: https://fightingirish.com/news/2026/10/5/stanford-marcus-freeman-weekly-press-conference-10526

##############

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior quarterback CJ Carr has been named a Manning Award Star of the Week following a career performance at North Carolina in Week 5. The Manning Award annually honors the top quarterback in college football.

Carr delivered one of the most prolific performances of his career against the Tar Heels, completing 21 of 29 passes (72.4%) for 234 yards and four touchdown passes while adding a rushing score and 15 yards on the ground. The five total touchdowns marked the first five-touchdown game of his career and tied for the second-most by a Power Four quarterback this past week. He was also named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 for his performance.

Carr wasted little time making his mark Saturday in Chapel Hill, connecting with Jordan Faison on a 28-yard touchdown before finding Jaden Greathouse for a 12-yard score just 15 seconds later. The back-to-back touchdown passes marked the fifth-fastest pair of touchdowns in Notre Dame history since 1960 and the second-fastest back-to-back passing touchdowns in that span. Only one pair of Irish touchdowns has come in quicker succession through the air: in 2018, Ian Book connected with Miles Boykin for an eight-yard touchdown and Alizé Mack for a 35-yard score just 14 seconds apart against Stanford.

With four touchdown passes against North Carolina, Carr moved his career total to 37, putting him within three of Rick Mirer (40, 1989-92) for ninth place on Notre Dame’s career passing touchdown list.

Through five games this season, Carr has completed 71 percent of his passes for 1,197 yards and 16 total touchdowns, 13 through the air and three on the ground.

Notre Dame has won 15 consecutive games by double digits, dating back to Sept. 20, 2025, all with Carr as the starter. The 15-game streak is the longest active double-digit win streak in the FBS and the longest in program history. The streak is now tied for the seventh longest all-time in college football history.

The Jaguars carded an opening round 295 but followed up with a 1-under 283 to finish the day at 10-over 578.

Three different Jaguars broke par in round two to post a second round 283. Senior Titus Boswell paced the team at 3-under 68 while both Brady Schier and Keaton Parmley shot 1-under 70. Senior Greg Miller rounded out the group of scorers at 4-over 75 and sophomore Jack Scudder finished at 7-over 78.

Both Nathan Springer and Tommy Klinker shot 3-over 74 in the afternoon round.

Round one was largely Miller Time as the senior lead the way with a 1-under 70, fueled by six birdies. Behind him, Schier shot 3-over 74 and Boswell closed at 4-over 75. Parmley rounded out the team’s scoring group at 5-over 76 and Scudder finished his round at 83. Springer was tops among the team’s three individual entries in the morning round with a 2-over 73, making 14 pars. Klinker aced the 193-yard, par-3 No. 12 to end his round, playing his final five holes to 3-under.

“I knew it was going to be very windy for the first round today. In practice last week we worked on trying to hit more shots on the strong side, therefore short-siding myself less,” Miller said. “With the conditions I was just trying to give myself chances and I made a few really nice putts to start the round.

“When I was comfortable with the wind, I took advantage of those holes with good iron shots and tried to focus on good distance control.”

Three players are tied atop the leaderboard at 3-under 139, but 13 other players are within four shots of the lead going into Tuesday’s finale.

Play will resume with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday (Oct. 6).

SOUTHERN INDIANA MEN’S GOLF

BARTONVILLE, Ill. – USI Men’s Golf earned a second-place, runner-up finish at the Coyote Creek Classic at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Bartonville, Illinois, on Monday, recording the program’s best finish since 2023-24.

USI finished 16-over 868 (292-289-287), just five strokes back of tournament host and winner Bradley University, which posted 863 (278-298-287). The Screaming Eagles’ second-place finish is the program’s best finish since winning The Buddy in 2023-24.

Individually, graduate student Jonas Arnstrom-Bakker, sophomore Ingtawan Wangrungwichaisri, and freshman Loic Simard each earned top-10 finishes. Arnstrom-Bakker notched his first top-five as a Screaming Eagle and his second consecutive top-10 after finishing tied for fourth at even-par 213 (70-73-70). Wangrungwichaisri also recorded his second top-10 of the year after placing seventh with a two-over 215 (74-73-68), while Simard carded his first career top-10 with an eighth-place finish at five-over 218 (73-70-75).

Round one on Sunday morning featured a quick start for Arnstrom-Bakker, who posted a one-under-par with five birdies to open the tournament. Four Screaming Eagles broke 75 in the first round, Simard following only three strokes behind Arnstrom-Bakker after the freshman posted a strong back nine score of 32 with four birdies.

In round two, Simard got things going for the Screaming Eagles, matching the team’s low round of the day with a one-under-par for a three-stroke improvement from the opening round. Simard logged seven birdies in the second round.

On Monday, Wangrungwichaisri posted the tournament’s lowest round for USI, shooting a three-under 68 in the final round. It was the second straight tournament in which Wangrungwichaisri notched a round of 68 after doing so at last week’s Dolenc Invitational. The sophomore moved up with a 32 on the back nine and four birdies. Arnstrom-Bakker matched his first-round one-under 70 with four birdies on Monday. Simard added a pair of birdies in the third round to tie Arnstrom-Bakker with a team-best 13 total birdies in the tournament.

USI will head to Arkansas next week, Monday and Tuesday, to play in the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Arkansas, hosted by Arkansas State University.

VALPO MEN’S GOLF

Redshirt senior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) led the Valparaiso University men’s golf team on the first day of the Kemper Lakes Intercollegiate, hosted by Belmont at the par-72, 7217-yard Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Long Grove, Ill. The teams played the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament on Monday.

How It Happened

Somerville carded a 72 (E) in Round 1, the best round of the day by a Beacon. He hit par or better on 17 of his 18 holes in the first round. He leads the team and is tied for 24th of 78 overall at 153 through 36 holes.

Freshman Tyler Samaan (Elgin, Ill. / Burlington) and senior Elliot Lee (Tillamook, Ore. / Tillamook) tied for the team’s best Round-2 score at 78.

Junior Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township), who eagled the par-5 fourth hole in Round 2, is tied with Samaan for second on the team and 30th overall at 155 through two rounds.

The Beacons are seventh of 12 on the team leaderboard at 620 (304-316). Drake and South Dakota are tied for the team lead at 584, while Drake’s Jake Weissenburger sits atop the player leaderboard with a 7-under 137.

Thoughts From Head Coach Dave Gring

“This is one of the most challenging golf courses that we will play all season. The 1989 PGA Championship was held on this golf course, and it continues to be an excellent test for all of the players. The golf course will penalize you when you’re out of position and trying to recover. That was our situation for most of today, missing fairways and greens and trying to recover for a par on the hole. We only hit 52% of our greens in regulation and 46% of our fairways. Our shot execution simply was not sharp today, and we are going to have to make better decisions on the golf course as to where we are missing shots into fairways and greens.”

“The team has been resilient and they have demonstrated resolve, going into our final tournament round in our first three events. We are going to need to bounce back and play well tomorrow for our final round. We have played the golf course three times in the past two days, so we know where we need to hit the ball off the tee and into the greens. The attitudes by our players have still been good and we are looking forward to getting after the golf course tomorrow.”

Up Next

The Beacons will play the third and final round of the event on Tuesday. A link to live scoring via Clippd is available on ValpoAthletics.com.
