COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS

NORTHWESTERN DEBUTS NEW STADIUM WITH BLOWOUT OF PENN STATE

Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon II combined for 350 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as Northwestern christened the new $875 million Ryan Field with a 34-13 rout of Penn State in Big Ten play Friday night in Evanston, Ill.

The bruising Komolafe, who posted just 7 rushing yards last week against Indiana, finished with a career-high 188 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. Himon, an undersized backup with elite speed and elusiveness, added a career-best 162 yards and two scores on 10 carries as the Wildcats (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten) finished with 413 rushing yards.

Quarterback Aidan Chiles hit 10 of 14 passes for 93 yards and rushed for a score as Northwestern never trailed as it unveiled college football’s most expensive stadium to a national Fox audience.

Rocco Becht completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Nittany Lions (3-2, 0-2), who have dropped their first two Big Ten games for the second year in a row.

Northwestern seized control from the start. The Wildcats marched downfield steadily on the game’s first possession, but Penn State sacked Chiles on third down to force Northwestern to settle for Jackson Kleather’s 50-yard field goal at the 10:09 mark of the first quarter.

The Wildcats delivered the first touchdown in the new field’s history on their next drive. On his first touch of the night, Himon burst up the middle on a trap for 47 yards to set up Chiles’ 2-yard touchdown sneak that made it 10-0 with 5:07 on the clock.

After Northwestern committed the first turnover — Chiles and Gavin Sawchuk muffed a basic handoff that was recovered by Josiah Zayas at the hosts’ 34 — the Nittany Lions capitalized for their first score. On third-and-1, Carson Hansen bounced outside for an 8-yard score to cut Northwestern’s lead to 10-7.

Himon responded with two touchdown scampers before halftime. After Penn State’s score, he took a handoff up the middle before swinging down the left sideline for a 38-yard touchdown. Then, after a punt return set up the Wildcats at Penn State’s 35, Himon sliced up the middle on a trap for an 11-yard score that made it 24-7 with 1:55 to go in the first half.

Komolafe pushed the lead to 31-7 when he plunged in from 1 yard out with 1:13 left in the third quarter.

Penn State snapped a streak of six scoreless possessions with Becht’s 16-yard strike to Chase Sowell with 7:53 to go, but the Nittany Lions’ two-point conversion pass failed.

PITT LOSES QB MASON HEINTSCHEL, SURVIVES VIRGINIA TECH TO STAY PERFECT

Pittsburgh weathered the loss of quarterback Mason Heintschel and a furious Virginia Tech rally to escape its Atlantic Coast Conference game in Blacksburg, Va., with a 35-33 win on Friday.

Pitt (5-0, 2-0 ACC) forced four turnovers from Virginia Tech (4-1, 1-1) and nearly came up with a game-deciding fifth on the final Hokies drive. Panthers defensive lineman Isaiah Neal dislodged the ball from Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, but Hokies offensive lineman Logan Howland made the recovery.

Grunkemeyer later extended the drive with a fourth-down conversion, firing a bullet in traffic to tight end Luke Reynolds. Virginia Tech advanced to the Pitt 18-yard line, setting up for a 36-yard John Love field-goal attempt as time expired.

Love’s kick was ruled just wide left as it sailed over the goalpost.

The Panthers gave up a pair of touchdowns less than five minutes into the matchup of undefeated teams but settled in to pull within a three-point deficit by halftime.

Heintschel connected with receiver Cataurus Hicks just 31 seconds before intermission for a 22-yard touchdown that sent the teams into the locker room with Virginia Tech ahead 24-21.

Heintschel exited the game not much later, however, sustaining an apparent right leg injury early in the third quarter. Holden Geriner came on and finished the drive on which Heintschel exited, with the possession ending on Damon Ferguson Jr.’s 15-yard touchdown rush that gave the Panthers their first lead at 28-24 with 10:13 left in the third quarter.

Pitt scored again when Geriner hooked up with Hicks for a 29-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Each of Hicks’ touchdown receptions came on drives set up on takeaways by the Panthers’ defense.

Trailing 35-26 in the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech cut into the two-score deficit when Grunkemeyer found Davion Brown for a 28-yard touchdown less than a minute after the Hokies’ defense stuffed Ferguson behind the goal line for a safety.

The Panthers’ running attack produced 104 yards, led by Ja’Kyrian Turner’s 65. Turner scored Pitt’s first touchdown of the night on a 20-yard carry in the first quarter, and his six receptions led the Panthers.

Ferguson carried for 31 yards, and La’Vell Wright rushed for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Before his injury, Heintschel completed 10 of 18 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Geriner went 8 of 12 for 78 yards and a TD.

Grunkemeyer finished 30 of 41 for a career-high 434 yards and three touchdowns, including a 38-yard score to Que’Sean Brown on the Hokies’ opening drive. Grunkemeyer was also intercepted twice.

CBS ANNOUNCES TONY ROMO’S PERMANENT EXIT FOLLOWING ARREST FOR OPERATING A VEHICLE WHILE INTOXICATED

CBS Sports and Tony Romo have officially parted ways, one month after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback pleaded no contest to charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Romo had been on leave since his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin. He had been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017.

“CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways,” CBS Sports said Friday in a statement. “We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”

Analyst JJ Watt had joined play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS Sports’ lead NFL team during Romo’s absence. Watt will continue in that role now and all other CBS teams will remain the same.

“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years,” Romo said in a statement. “I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life — with a desire to win and be the best that I can be. I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”

MARCUS MARIOTA TO START FOR COMMANDERS AGAINST COLTS IN LONDON WITH JAYDEN DANIELS RULED OUT

WATFORD, England (AP) — Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota will get his second straight start in place of the injured Jayden Daniels on Sunday when Washington faces the Indianapolis Colts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Head coach Dan Quinn announced the decision Friday after practice at the team’s luxury hotel accommodations outside London.

Daniels returned to practice this week after dislocating his elbow in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. He’s been wearing a protective brace and expressed no concerns about further damage.

“He had a great week. It was awesome to have him back on the field in a limited fashion,” Quinn said. “He’ll be out. Marcus will start.”

Quinn called Daniels’ return to practice “a huge positive step for us and for him.”

“We’ll assess where we are next week when we get to a full week of practice all the way through,” the coach said.

Last week, Mariota threw three touchdown passes in the 33-31 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s the second elbow dislocation for Daniels, who missed most of the second half of last season with the same injury.

The third-year quarterback, who led the Commanders to the NFC championship game in his rookie season, had said Thursday he was preparing mentally to start against the Colts and wasn’t worried about re-injuring the elbow.

“That’s what the brace is for,” Daniels said.

BEARS RULE OUT QB CALEB WILLIAMS; QB1 SPOT TBD VS. JETS

Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent are in the running to start for the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but Caleb Williams was ruled out for the second week in a row with a hamstring injury.

Head coach Ben Johnson is keeping the call for Week 4 against the Jets to himself, or at least not sharing it publicly two days before kickoff.

“We’ll find out on Sunday,” Johnson said Friday. “I know both of them are well prepared to play and win a game for us.”

Keenum won Monday’s game over the Eagles as the starter, jumping from third on the depth chart to pilot Chicago to a 27-7 victory. Bagent missed most of last week while in concussion protocol, but has been identified by Johnson as “one of the best 32” quarterbacks in the NFL.

Bagent said he’s not pushing to leapfrog Keenum following his strong showing on “Monday Night Football.”

“There’s a couple ways to think about it. Obviously, I would like everything that the football world can offer me. But then there’s also the part that I am from Shepherd University, so I have absolutely zero ego in this and nobody is a bigger cheerleader and a fan of Case Keenum than I am,” Bagent said. “I think he is the epitome of what I believe a quarterback is and is supposed to be. So it was fun to watch him play.”

Johnson increased Bagent’s reps in practice after he was largely limited in advance of Monday’s game.

Johnson said the team is aware of the decision and “a direction has been made” with the game plan.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who was defensive coordinator in Detroit when Johnson ran the offense, said the Jets are “prepared for all of that, and we’ll be prepared to play football” when asked which quarterback he expects to see in the huddle with the starters on Sunday.

NFL WEEK 4 CAPSULES

Indianapolis Colts (1-2) vs. Washington Commanders (1-2) in London

Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Colts -3.5. Total 47.5

Series rewind: Indianapolis has a 21-11 record against Washington all-time. This is the first game between the teams since the Commanders beat the Colts 17-16 in 2022.

With four combined wins since Nov. 10, 2025 – Washington has three of them — a trip across the pond comes with a chance for one of these teams to post back-to-back wins. The Commanders’ strength on defense is stopping the run. Washington gives up only 82 rushing yards per game. Jonathan Taylor embraced the European vacation last season with a career-high 286 total yards (244 rushing, 42 receiving) and three touchdowns against the Falcons. A focus on slowing down Taylor has been good for business for Tyler Warren. He’s third in the league among tight ends with 18 catches and set a career high with nine last week. The Commanders brought quarterback Jayden Daniels along for the trip after he missed last week’s game, a Marcus Mariota-engineered victory over the Seahawks. Daniels (elbow) was injured Week 2 at Dallas and won’t play for at least another week.

Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Bengals -2.5, Total 51.5

Series rewind: The Bengals have won the last four games against the Jaguars to level the all-time series at 13 apiece. That includes their costly 31-27 win in Week 2 last season, when Joe Burrow sustained a turf toe injury that sidelined him for nine games.

Cincinnati and Jacksonville enter this week’s game off decidedly different results. The Bengals took their first loss after a costly Burrow fumble doomed them in a 30-27 setback to division rival Pittsburgh, while the Jaguars dominated the New England Patriots 35-6 to send a statement to the rest of the AFC. The Bengals enter this game with a depleted secondary as Ja’Sir Taylor and Jalen Davis are on injured reserve while Jordan Battle, Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger have all not practiced fully this week. That could be a problem against a Jacksonville offense helmed by Trevor Lawrence, who has thrown for seven touchdowns and two interceptions through three games. The Jaguars’ ground game also has been a strength, though, 10th in the league in rushing yards per game while rushing for 95-plus yards in every game so far this season. Cincinnati’s passing game also has been on point, with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins combining for 429 yards and four touchdown catches early this season.

Green Bay Packers (1-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-3)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Packers -3.5, Total 38.5

Series rewind: Green Bay leads the all-time series 34-24-1 but Tampa Bay has won three of the last four, including 31-26 in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 24, 2021.

Both the Packers and Buccaneers could badly lose in this game. The Packers, quickly buried in what again appears to be a very strong NFC North, were handily beaten 35-14 at home by the Atlanta Falcons. Green Bay’s ground game has not remotely helped quarterback Jordan Love, with the team’s 146 total rushing yards standing as its fewest through three games since 1933. The defense also isn’t helping, giving up 30.3 points per game — tied for third most in the NFL. To make matters worse, Love is completing just 52.4% of his passes. But Green Bay at least can enjoy having its starting quarterback available Sunday, with Tampa Bay unable to say the same after Baker Mayfield sustained a dislocated thumb late in last week’s loss to Minnesota. He’ll miss at least three weeks, leaving undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels to lead the offense after he beat out Jake Browning for the backup job. Daniels accounted for 90 total touchdowns (67 passing, 23 rushing) across 49 career games at Kansas, and now becomes the first undrafted rookie to start a game in the first four weeks of the season since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger.

Tennessee Titans (0-3) at Baltimore Ravens (2-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Ravens -11.5, Total 42.5

Series rewind: The Ravens have won the last two games in the series to take a 14-13 lead. These teams have faced off twice in the playoffs this decade, with Baltimore winning a 2021 wild-card matchup while Tennessee came out on top in a 2020 AFC Divisional Round game.

Derrick Henry faces the team that drafted him for the first time on Sunday. The former second-round pick ran for 9,502 yards and 90 touchdowns over his first eight seasons in the league with Tennessee. He’s already up to 301 rushing yards (fifth in the NFL) and six rushing touchdowns (tied for the league lead this season) through three games this season for the Ravens. He could be in for another big day against a Tennessee defense which is allowing 126.3 yards per game. Luckily for Baltimore, quarterback Lamar Jackson returned to full practice on Thursday after he was limited with a back injury. Even though the Titans have surrounded last year’s No. 1 overall pick with a new coaching staff and wide receivers Calvin Ridley, Carnell Tate and Wan’Dale Robinson, Cam Ward’s 80.9 passer rating ranks 29th among 39 quarterbacks who have started at least one game this season, and his 168.0 passing yards per game rank 31st. Tennessee, still seeking its first win of the Robert Saleh era, has been close the last two weeks, losing 24-20 to the Eagles and 12-7 last week at the Giants.

Los Angeles Rams (1-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Eagles -3, Total 43.5

Series rewind: Including the postseason, the Eagles have swept the last four meetings with the Rams. That includes a 33-26 victory in Philadelphia in Week 3 last season.

The Eagles are the only NFL team that hasn’t scored a point in the first quarter or recorded a takeaway. When these teams met last September, Jalen Hurts outdueled eventual MVP Matthew Stafford. Hurts threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth while Stafford was held under 200 yards with two TDs and an interception. The Rams have outgained the Eagles by more than 300 yards through three games but only have six more points to show for it thanks to a mediocre performance in the red zone. Los Angeles should get a boost from the return of wideout Puka Nacua, a full participant in Thursday’s practice after missing two games with a hip injury. Davante Adams is just 9 yards away from 13,000 for his career and has six TDs in five career games vs. Philly. They will be facing an Eagles defense that began this week without top linebacker Zack Baun (concussion protocol). No. 1 wideout DeVonta Smith also missed Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring injury.

New England Patriots (1-2) at Buffalo Bills (3-0)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Bills -6.5, Total 48.5

Series rewind: The AFC East rivals have split the season series during each of the past three campaigns, with all six of those meetings decided by seven or fewer points.

The Bills have a chance to start 4-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time 1991-92. Josh Allen is just the fourth player in NFL history — and first quarterback — with six or more rushing touchdowns in at least nine consecutive seasons, joining Marshall Faulk, LaDainian Tomlinson and Jim Brown. Bills running back James Cook has two career 100-yard games against the Patriots, going for 107 yards and two TDs at New England in Week 15 last season. Buffalo linebacker Greg Rousseau is just the third player since 1982 with multiple sacks in each of the season’s first three games, along with Mark Gastineau (1984) and Kevin Greene (1998). Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has thrown six interceptions and only one touchdown pass for an offense that ranks next to last in scoring at 12.0 points per game. New England has scored only one TD on six trips to the red zone. Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez is looking for his third straight game against Buffalo with at least five tackles and a pass breakup.

New York Jets (1-2) at Chicago Bears (2-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Bears -3.5. Total 42.5.

Series rewind: The Bears beat the Jets 31-10 in their last meeting in November 2022. Chicago has won five of the past six in the series.

Maybe it’s time to believe Bears coach Ben Johnson when he asserts it doesn’t matter which of his quarterbacks start a game, trusting the collective offense to perform regardless of No. 1 QB Caleb Williams’ status. Williams (hamstring) won’t play for a second consecutive game but the Bears did just fine in demolishing the Eagles behind Case Keenum, the 38-year-old No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart. Tyson Bagent (concussion) was sidelined last week and could be in the picture Sunday. But Keenum passed for 247 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in a 27-7 victory over the Eagles after Bagent spent much of the previous week in concussion protocol. Taking care of the ball has kept the Jets in every game this season. Finishing has been another story. Geno Smith will be wary in this matchup after the Bears had three takeaways in a return to the aggressive, opportunistic style that helped the unit lead the NFL in that category last season. The Jets are coming in following back-to-back losses by a combined 10 points against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions. Revving up the running game remains an area of emphasis for the Jets. Breece Hall is week-to-week with a quad injury he suffered in last Sunday’s 31-24 loss at Detroit. He has rushed for just 61 yards on 29 carries after gaining 102 yards on 22 attempts in the season opener. Enter Braelon Allen, who figures to see an accelerated workload in the backfield. Smith  sports a 75.5% completion rate. He was 31-of-37 passing for 321 yards with touchdown passes to Garrett Wilson, rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq and tight end Jeremy Ruckert against the Lions. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (groin) likely will face the Bears, providing a boost to a secondary bracing for a challenge.Sports data solutions

Arizona Cardinals (1-2) at New York Giants (2-1)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Cardinals -2.5. Total 43.5.

Series rewind: The Cardinals have a four-game winning streak at MetLife Stadium. The Giants won the last meeting, 31-28, in Glendale, Ariz., in the 2023 season.

Jameis Winston remains the quarterback for a second consecutive week, despite the Giants trading with for J.J. McCarthy on Monday. McCarthy, acquired to provide insurance with starter Jaxson Dart out for the season with a knee injury that required surgery, will be the primary backup. The Giants came away with a 12-7 win over Tennessee despite failing to put the ball in the end zone last week. Winston is 25-of-49 for 229 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in two games this season. The Cardinals showed some resilience in keeping it close in a 36-30 loss at San Francisco last Sunday, a week after being dominated at home by the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Arizona’s offense has lacked the big plays, a few having been negated by penalties, but has been fairly efficient in moving the ball.

Miami Dolphins (0-3) at Minnesota Vikings (3-0)

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Vikings -10.5. Total 38.5.

Series rewind: Kirk Cousins outdueled Teddy Bridgewater to lead the Vikings past the Dolphins, 24-16, in the most recent meeting (October 2022), despite being outgained 458-234 in total yards. Miami has won the past two meetings and leads the all-time series 7-6.

The Dolphins are playing with losing margins, averaging 12 points per game while giving up 28.7. Revving up the offense became more complicated last week when RB De’Von Achane (ACL) was lost for the season. Minus Miami’s top playmaker, QB Malik Willis is fighting uphill while trying to solve the NFL’s most aggressive defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Flores and the Vikings hunt with a blitz-heavy scheme to force the ball out of the quarterback’s hand early. They have 14 sacks and four interceptions this season. The Dolphins are turning to Ollie Gordon II as the primary ballcarrier while starting a pair of rookies at wide receiver: Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell. The Vikings might have to shake things up on the offensive depth chart with wide receiver Justin Jefferson (ankle) hurting.

Denver Broncos (2-1) at San Francisco 49ers (3-0)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: 49ers -2.5. Total 47.5

Series rewind: This is the first meeting since 2022. The series is tied 8-8 including the playoffs, highlighted by the 49ers’ 55-10 romp against the Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.

One of two unbeaten NFC teams remaining (with Minnesota), the 49ers lead the league in point differential (plus-48) and rank second in scoring (32.7 points per game) behind the fast start of quarterback Brock Purdy (league-leading 133.1 passer rating). San Francisco is just the fourth team since 1990 to allow zero sacks in each of its first three games. Four-time first-team All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner recorded a career-high 17 tackles in last week’s win against Arizona. Denver rallied from a 16-0 deficit to stun the Rams, 30-26, last Sunday night. Bo Nix fueled the rally with two third-quarter touchdown passes and the game-winning TD run with 47 seconds left. Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga — who played for the 49ers from 2021-24 — made NFL history with a sack and two interceptions in a single quarter. His fourth-quarter heroics against Los Angeles included a 66-yard pick-six. Five 49ers starters missed practice to start the week, including WR Mike Evans (ribs), DE Nick Bosa (knee, calf) and LB Dre Greenlaw (quad).

Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) at Las Vegas Raiders (3-0)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

Fan Duel: Chiefs -4.5. Total: 47.5

Series rewind: The teams split two meetings last season. The Las Vegas victory in the second matchup when Patrick Mahomes was sidelined with his knee injury was just the Raiders’ third win in the past 17 matchups with the Chiefs.

Both teams are undefeated and fighting for first place in the AFC West? Sounds like a flashback to the Raiders’ long-ago better days in Oakland. The Raiders haven’t started 4-0 since 2002 — a season in which they reached the Super Bowl before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Las Vegas hasn’t allowed a single point in the fourth quarter during the surprise start that has seen Kirk Cousins throw nine touchdown passes in 92 attempts. New Raiders coach Klint Kubiak quickly has changed the atmosphere around the team. On the other side of the ball, linebacker Nakobe Dean has been a stellar free-agent pickup and leads the squad with 27 tackles, 3.5 stops for losses and three sacks. Cornerback Hezekiah Masses has three interceptions entering a matchup in which Las Vegas wishes to slow Mahomes. Saying the two-time NFL MVP regularly carves up the Raiders is putting it nicely – he has thrown 36 touchdowns against five interceptions while winning 13 of his 15 starts. Mahomes is doing well this season on his surgically repaired knee as he has passed for 812 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions. Kansas City is tied for seventh in scoring at 29.3 points (the Raiders are also part of that tie) and ranks second in total offense at 416.3 yards per game as running back Kenneth Walker III has pumped life into the running game with a league-leading 360 yards. Walker has two rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores. Linebacker Nick Bolton leads the defense with 28 tackles but one problem is that Kansas City has just four sacks and seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Chris Jones doesn’t yet have one.

Los Angeles Chargers (0-3) at Seattle Seahawks (2-1)

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET

Fan Duel: Seahawks -7. Total: 43.5

Series rewind: This is the first meeting since 2022 when the Seahawks recorded a 37-23 road victory. The Chargers have won three of the past five matchups after Seattle prevailed in the previous five.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba picked up where he left off after being the NFL Offensive Player of the Year last season. Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 405 receiving yards and six touchdown catches and is tied for the league lead with 27 receptions. He has posted outings of 122, 155 and 128 receiving yards and fared well with backup Drew Lock as well as starter Sam Darnold. The latter was back from a Week 1 glute injury and threw for 379 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 33-31 loss against the host Washington Commanders. Darnold also threw two interceptions as the Super Bowl champions saw their winning streak end at 12 games dating back to last November. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams is pacing the defensive with three sacks. The winless Chargers are nearing desperation mode and will fully be there with another loss. Of course, the 1994 team in San Diego reached the Super Bowl after opening with four straight losses when it was led by no-nonsense coach Bobby ‘Boss’ Ross and all-everything linebacker Junior Seau. But 32 years later, coach Jim Harbaugh brought in former Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel to run the offense and the unit isn’t clicking and has a high of just 16 points. The Chargers rank 29th in scoring offense at 14.7 points per game and 20th in total offense at 308.7 yards per game. Quarterback Justin Herbert’s completion percentage is 59.1% — his career rate is 66.3 – and he has thrown more interceptions (four) than touchdown passes (three). Ladd McConkey’s 12 catches lead the team.

Detroit Lions (2-1) at Carolina Panthers (1-2)

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Lions -3.5. Total 50.5.

Series rewind: The home team has won four in a row in this series and the Panthers are 8-4 all-time against Detroit.

Headliners are set for a reunion of sorts when the Lions head to Charlotte. Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs — who totaled three touchdowns and 164 yards from scrimmage in last Sunday’s 31-24 home victory against the New York Jets – and Panthers quarterback Bryce Young were college teammates at Alabama. They’ve been integral parts of powerful offenses early this season. Lions QB Jared Goff has completed 70.6% of his passes for 802 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions this season. The Lions have scored exactly 31 points in each of their three games and present a challenge for the Panthers, who are coming off a 21-18 loss at Cleveland. Carolina has adjustments to make with starting CBs Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) going on injured reserve. Those spots could be replenished with Corey Thornton and Robert Rochell from the practice squad. Rookie cornerback Will Lee III is expected to be called upon for extensive duty as his role continues to grow.

Atlanta Falcons (1-2) at New Orleans Saints (1-2)

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET

FanDuel odds: Saints -2.5. Total 47.5.

Series rewind: The Falcons beat the Saints 19-17 in the 2025 regular-season finale to reclaim the edge in the all-time series (regular season only), 57-56.

On the verge of being left for dead after flopping in the first two games, the Falcons found life by plugging in QB Michael Penix Jr. at Green Bay last week. In primetime for the second consecutive week, Atlanta’s offense revolves around All-Pro RB Bijan Robinson, who helped get Penix comfortable in his first game since ACL surgery last November. Robinson’s third career 200-yard game (194 rushing, 19 receiving) included two touchdowns at Green Bay. He averages 127.3 total yards per game against the Saints, who are allowing 128.7 yards per game on the ground. New Orleans lost to the Raiders last week and has a breakout quarterback in Tyler Shough, the NFL leader in completions (91) who is also second in the league in passing yards (917). Shough and WR Chris Olave are thriving. Olave is tied for the NFL lead with 27 receptions. The extra attention has opened the middle of the field with TEs Noah Fant and Juwan Johnson each catching two TD passes last week.

EX-FALCONS C JEFF VAN NOTE, 6-TIME PRO BOWLER, DIES AT 80

Six-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Van Note, whose career with the Atlanta Falcons spanned parts of three decades, has died at age 80.

The Falcons announced the passing of their Ring of Honor member on Friday.

“We mourn the loss of a true Falcons legend,” team owner and chairman Arthur Blank said in a statement. “Jeff Van Note dedicated 18 seasons to this franchise and became one of the most respected and beloved players in our history. He embodied toughness, resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his team, qualities that earned him the admiration of generations of Falcons fans.”

An 11th-round draft pick (262nd overall) in 1969, Van Note went on to play in 246 games with the Falcons from 1969-86. Only fellow offensive lineman and teammate Mike Kenn (251 games, 1978-94) made more appearances for Atlanta.

Drafted as a linebacker out of Kentucky, Van Note moved to the offensive line under Atlanta head coach Norm Van Brocklin and became the full-time starting center in 1970.

Van Note was a second-team All-Pro selection in 1979 and 1982 and made the Pro Bowl in 1974-75 and 1979-82. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Falcons Ring of Honor in 2006.Digital sports desk

Following his playing career, Van Note served as a color commentator for Falcons and Kentucky football broadcasts through the 1990s.

“Jeff’s contributions to this organization cannot be measured solely by his accomplishments on the field,” Blank said. “He helped shape the identity of the Atlanta Falcons and left a legacy that will endure for years to come. We are grateful for everything he meant to this franchise and our community. On behalf of the Falcons family, we extend our deepest sympathies to his children, Beau, Ben, and Blaine, and all who are grieving this tremendous loss. Jeff will always hold a special place in the history and heart of the Atlanta Falcons.”

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

REPORT: PHILLIES TO ‘GRACEFULLY’ PART FROM INTERIM MANAGER DON MATTINGLY

The Philadelphia Phillies plan to “gracefully” dismiss interim manager Don Mattingly, USA Today reported Friday.

The move likely will be made next week, and Mattingly will be offered an opportunity to remain with the Phillies, per the report. His son, Preston, is the general manager and answers to Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations.

The Phillies finished the regular season at 88-74 and were eliminated from the playoffs on Thursday night, when they lost 6-2 to the Atlanta Braves and dropped the National League wild-card series in three games.

Mattingly, 65, joined the Phillies in January as the bench coach under manager Rob Thomson. The team was looking for someone with managerial experience, and Mattingly fit the description. He previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15) and the Miami Marlins (2016-22).

At the time, Mattingly said he wasn’t interested in managing again.

“I don’t think I have the energy for that anymore,” he said. ” … The managing side, for me, I feel like those days have passed me by. So I don’t have any aspirations to manage again.”

But on April 28, Thomson was fired after a 9-19 start, despite the team making four consecutive postseason appearances with him at the helm and promoted Mattingly to interim manager. Philadelphia was 10 1/2 games out of first place in the National League East at the time.

By July 18, the Phillies were just two games behind the Atlanta Braves with a 55-44 overall record, 46-25 under Mattingly. A 2-8 mark through the end of July put Philadelphia eight games back but still in wild-card position in the NL.

The Phillies held the lead in the wild-card chase for weeks this summer but a 10-14 record in September dropped them into the NL’s third wild-card spot and a road matchup to open the postseason against the NL East champion Braves.

NHL ROUNDUP: ALEX TUCH, CAPS SEND CHAMP HURRICANES TO 2ND STRAIGHT LOSS

Alex Tuch scored two first-period goals in his first game with Washington, allowing the Capitals to coast to a season-opening 5-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday in Raleigh, N.C.

Jakob Chychrun had a goal and an assist while Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard also scored for the Capitals, who opened their schedule three nights after some other teams in the NHL.

Dylan Strome and Pierre-Luc Dubois each had two assists for Washington while Alex Ovechkin, beginning his 22nd season, added an assist. Capitals goalie Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots.

Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored for Carolina, which needed nearly 102 minutes of game time to put the puck in the net at the outset of its Stanley Cup title defense. Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi, playing for the second time this week, made 22 saves.

Bruins 4, Jets 3 (OT)

JJ Peterka scored with 1:39 left in overtime, propelling Boston to a come-from-behind win at Winnipeg.

The Bruins’ Elias Lindholm scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:38 left in regulation to force OT. Hampus Lindholm and James Hagens (first NHL goal) also tallied while Jeremy Swayman made 30 saves for Boston, which has started the season with back-to-back wins. David Pastrnak assisted on Boston’s last two goals.

Kyle Connor had a power-play goal and added an assist, Mario Ferraro and Dylan DeMelo also lit the lamp, and Adam Lowry dished out a pair of helpers for the Jets in their season opener. Stuart Skinner turned aside 26 shots.

Rangers 2, Red Wings 0

Dylan Garand posted his first career shutout while making 22 saves as New York blanked host Detroit.

Sean Durzi scored on a first-period power play and Eeli Tolvanen chipped in an empty-net goal to spoil the Red Wings’ season opener. Garand was making his first start this season after going 2-0-1 in three appearances for the Rangers last season.

John Gibson made 19 saves for the Red Wings, who were missing two of their top players. Former captain and first-line center Dylan Larkin, who has requested a trade, was sidelined by an upper-body injury, while restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson, one of the team’s top defensemen, remains unsigned amid stalled negotiations.

Blues 4, Stars 0

Joel Hofer made 25 saves for his ninth career shutout and contributed an assist as visiting St. Louis beat Dallas in the season opener for both teams.

Pius Suter and Jimmy Snuggerud each had a goal and an assist and Mason McTavish and Dalibor Dvorsky also scored for the Blues. McTavish recorded his goal 1:34 into his St. Louis debut after he was acquired in an offseason trade with Anaheim.

Stars goalie Jake Oettinger stopped 20 shots, but Dallas was unable to find the net despite holding a 25-24 edge in shots on goal. The Blues led just 2-0 before tacking on a pair of empty-net goals in a 15-second span over the final 2:30.

Ducks 4, Golden Knights 3

Leo Carlsson had a goal and an assist and Lukas Dostal made 27 saves as Anaheim jumped out to a four-goal lead and held on for a victory in Las Vegas.

Beckett Sennecke, Alex Killorn and Jeff Malott also tallied for the Ducks in their season opener.

Shea Theodore, Tomas Hertl and Braeden Bowman scored goals and Jack Eichel had two assists for the Golden Knights, who fell to 15-4-1 in regular-season home games against Anaheim. Carter Hart finished with 16 saves.

GOLF NEWS

JEENO THITIKUL, POLLY MACK LEVEL ATOP LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP AT MIDPOINT

Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul and Germany’s Polly Mack each birdied the final hole on Friday to share the lead after the second round of the Lotte Championship in Honolulu.

Both shot 7-under-par 65 at Hoakalei Country Club, leaving them at 12-under 132. One stroke behind are Italy’s Carolina Melgrati, who shot a 65 on Friday, and South Korea’s Ina Yoon, who posted a second-round 67.

China’s Michelle Zhang (67 on Friday) and first-round leader A Lim Kim of South Korea (69) share fifth place at 10 under. Two Japanese players, Nasa Hataoka (65) and Miyu Yamashita (67) are tied for seventh at 9 under.

Thitikul logged four birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine to complete her second consecutive bogey-free round.

“I don’t even know how I can do it out there,” Thitikul said of avoiding error. “I mean, like definitely I hit more (greens on Friday).

“But obviously I do have some ups and downs (that are) not quite easy. … Just lucky like momentum-wise that I’m not (falling) off (after) 36 holes.”

As for the way she ended the round, by sinking a mid-range birdie putt, Thitikul said, “Finishing with a birdie, it’s a sweet dream coming in the night.”

Mack, one of the last players on the course, also has yet to make a bogey through the first half of the tournament. Like Thitikul, she posted four birdies before the turn on Friday and three the rest of the way.

Melgrati closed the day with three consecutive birdies (on the front nine), capping a round that included eight birdies and a bogey at par-4 14th hole. The 24-year-old LPGA Tour rookie has finished in the top 30 in just one of her 14 previous events this year, a tie for ninth at the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba in April.

“I was just trying to have fun on the course,” she said of her strong second round. “It’s Hawaii and it’s pretty good to play a tournament here, so I was just trying to enjoy the round, and, I mean, hit shots without fear. That kind of works out when it’s a nice calm environment, so that was nice.”

Yoon was able to overcome a triple-bogey 7 on the third hole as she produced eight birdies and had no other missteps on the day.

“At the time it was really hard to control (my emotions),” Yoon said of her reaction to the triple bogey. “Like, I was so mad at myself. But (my caddie) helped me to get back to normal, and (I) put a lot of effort to just move on.

“So I think that helped a lot. Yeah, thankfully made many birdies after that. My shot was great today, so, yeah, I’m pretty happy about it.”

Defending champion Youmin Hwang of South Korea recovered from an opening round 72 by shooting 66 on Friday, leaving her tied for 22nd.

AUSTIN SMOTHERMAN (62) MOVES IN FRONT AT BANK OF UTAH CHAMPIONSHIP

Austin Smotherman finished with a three-birdie burst to card a 9-under-par 62 on Friday and take a one-stroke lead halfway through the Bank of Utah Championship in Ivins, Utah.

Smotherman beat his Thursday score by one shot to get to 17-under 125, one ahead of Kevin Roy (63 on Friday) after two rounds at Black Desert Resort.

“Today it was just very steady, a lot of greens, a lot of fairways, a couple tight wedges. It’s what you got to do to shoot 9 under,” said Smotherman, who hit all 18 greens in regulation and tied his career-low round.

He already had seven birdies and a bogey on his card when he reached the par-4 16th, where he converted a 9-foot birdie putt. Smotherman stayed hot with the flat stick and made a 20-footer for birdie at the par-3 17th and then had a two-putt birdie at the par-5 18th.Digital sports desk

The 32-year-old is seeking his first PGA Tour victory, along with access to the first two signature events of 2027. Players who finish the tour’s FedEx Cup Fall series Nos. 51-60 in the standings will qualify, and only the top 100 will keep their cards for next year.

Kevin Streelman, who shot a 64, needs a strong fall as he entered this week 151st in the points race. He is tied for third in the tournament at 15 under, level with Doug Ghim, who shot the other 62 of the day. Germany’s Stephan Jaeger (65) is fifth at 14 under.

“I would say right here I would like to attack and have nothing to lose,” said Streelman, whose last PGA Tour win came in 2014. “But will I be nervous? Of course. I’m a human being and that’s what happens when you’re close to doing something that’s meaningful to you and that’s important to you. So whether that’s excitement or nerves or, you know, freaking out whatever it is, it’s kind of all the same, it’s all in the same family.”

Roy is bogey-free through 36 holes, with five of his eight birdies Friday coming on the back nine, which he played first. At No. 87 in the standings, Roy had an easy time answering a question about his goals for the rest of the year.

“I think first and foremost, keep a job,” he said. “No, really, just keep going out and just trying to play one shot at a time and see where we stack up at the end.

Zach Bauchou, who led the tournament following a first-round 62, posted a pedestrian 69 to land at 11 under, six behind the leader.

Play was suspended due to darkness with three players yet to complete the second round.

Among the notable names in line to miss the projected cut of 6 under par are Maverick McNealy, Lucas Glover, Max Greyserman and Australian Cam Davis at 5 under; Tony Finau at 4 under; and Zach Johnson at 1 over.

Star rookie Jackson Koivun, fresh off his appearance on the victorious U.S. Presidents Cup team, holed a 6-foot birdie putt at No. 18 to shoot 67 and reach 6 under for the event, likely making the cut on the number.

“Obviously the cut got pretty deep at 6 (under) so I needed that birdie on 18,” said Koivun, 21. “But I hit a pretty good drive, it just overturned just a little bit in that bunker. Didn’t have the greatest lie. But I pulled 3-wood and I was like, ‘I’m going to go for broke here.’ Came out nicely.

“I figured if I caught it heavy or something, it would end up in the same spot as a layup. So, came out nicely. And then that chip was solid, just outside the gimmie range for the putt. It was pretty nerve-wracking, but just happy to see it go in and fighting this weekend.”

RICHARD GREEN, Y.E. YANG, ROBERT KARLSSON SHARE LEAD AT LEHIGH VALLEY

Australian Richard Green birdied the final hole of his bogey-free, 6-under-par 64 to tie South Korea’s Y.E. Yang and Sweden’s Robert Karlsson for the first-round lead at the inaugural Jefferson Lehigh Valley Classic on Friday in Allentown, Pa.

The trio is one stroke ahead of Tim O’Neal, New Zealand’s Steven Alker and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee at Lehigh Country Club.

Green, 55, is angling for his second PGA Tour Champions title after he won the Rogers Charity Classic last year. He led the field in greens in regulation (17 of 18) on Friday.

“Very, very happy,” Green said of his reaction to his round. “If I can keep that sort of form up over the next couple of days, who knows?”

There are also three weeks remaining in the regular season before the top 72 players advance to the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs. That increases the pressure on players like Karlsson, who entered the week 58th in the points standings.

“It hasn’t shown, but (at the most recent tournament at Pebble Beach) it kind of clicked and I got especially the mental thing working a bit better, being more patient out there when things went wrong, just take it one at a time,” Karlsson said.

Karlsson had seven birdies through 14 holes before taking his only bogey of the day at No. 15 and parring out. Yang also finished with seven birdies and a single bogey.

Alker, who sits third in the Schwab Cup points race, ended his round with back-to-back birdies. He also had a scare when his caddie, Troy Martin, apparently fainted during the round.

“I was pretty concerned about Troy, first of all,” Alker said. “He just stopped, literally just started walking and then stopped and went down. He got checked out, he’s doing OK, that’s good  news.

“… I hadn’t seen any of the golf course, either. I didn’t play a pro-am or a practice round, so I’m kind of going a little bit blind. Yeah, it was tricky, but in a way it just kind of like frees you up. You’re like not focusing so much on the score in golf, just getting the job done.”

Tied for seventh at 4-under 66 are Michael Block, Tommy Gainey, Dicky Pride and Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez. Schwab Cup leader Stewart Cink shot a 1-under 69.

The only other Colts player to not participate in a practice this week due to anything other than rest was tight end Mo Alie-Cox, who did not participate Wednesday and Thursday due to an illness. Alie-Cox has only missed one game due to an injury since the start of the 2019 season.

Check back later Friday for the Colts’ final practice report of Week 4, which will include game status designations.

Last Meeting

Indy Eleven had its 10-game home league unbeaten streak (9-0-1) snapped in a 1-0 loss to Loudoun United FC on July 25 at Carroll Stadium. The run without a home loss in the USL Championships lasted nearly a full calendar year, starting last August and concluding with a 2-0 win over Charleston Battery.

The Boys in Blue earned a plethora of chances, finishing with 20 shots, 14 shots from inside the box, 10 shots on target, nine corners, and 36 crosses. But Loudoun United goalkeeper Ethan Bandré had an extraordinary performance, making 10 saves, tying the mark for the most in a USL-C match this season.

Charlie Sharp and Noble Okello led all players with three shots on target, while Bruno Rendon’s five shots were a game-high. Cam Lindley created four chances and made 54 accurate passes.

Rendon had Indy Eleven’s first big chance in the 11th minute, pressing alongside Mohamed Omar to win the ball back in the final third. Immediately after gaining possession, he played a quick one-two with Omar, granting him a chance to put a low left-footed shot on goal from 12 yards out on the left side of the box. Unfortunately for Indy Eleven’s leading league scorer, Bandré was able to get down and make the two-handed stop.

Paco Craig had an opportunity shortly afterward in the 19th minute, when Lindley played an out-swinging free kick towards the edge of the 18-yard-box. The ball was headed into the penalty area, where it came to the veteran defender, but his acrobatic effort went over the top.

In the 26th, Logan Neidlinger drove into the box towards the endline and cut back a ground pass to Okello. The angle was too tight, though, and Okello’s shot was saved.

After conceding, Indy Eleven was on the front foot for the entire final half hour, repeatedly threatening. During that span, the hosts had 65% possession and four shots on target.

Anthony Herbert had a great chance in the 69th minute, when the second ball from a Lindley corner kick came to his left foot directly in front of the goal. His attempt hit the outside of the post and went behind.

The best chance for the Boys in Blue came in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. Edward Kizza controlled an attempted clearance, and rolled the ball through to Rendon, who found himself with no defenders between him and the goal. He opted to try to slide the ball across the face of goal to Josh O’Brien on the far post, but the midfielder was unable to direct the ball on target, allowing it to get caught in his feet.

Rendon’s distribution was on full display, as he set up Sharp and O’Brien inside the six with well-placed crosses.

Wednesday at Rhode Island FC

For the sixth consecutive time in their series history, USL Championship Eastern Conference rivals Indy Eleven and Rhode Island FC played a one-goal game, and for the fourth straight meeting the home team prevailed 1-0 in the final mid-week game of 2026 for the Boys in Blue.

Indy Eleven got its attack going early with three scoring opportunities in a four-minute stretch. Defender Makel Rasheed started the first sequence in the 11th minute with a long ball right of the box to forward Malik Henry-Scott, who spun out of a defender’s grasp to center it to forward Loïc Mesanvi for a left-footed chance outside the six.

Just a minute later, captain Aodhan Quinn, who became the first player in USL Championship history to start 300 regular-season matches, played a long ball on the left side that Henry-Scott headed down to Mesanvi, who played it back to midfielder Josh O’Brien for a blast from outside the area.

In the 14th, four Boys in Blue players played quick passes to set up midfielder Jack Blake’s strike that was punched out by Rhode Island keeper Jacob Castro.

Defender Joe Hafferty played a long ball down the right side in the 19th minute to Mesanvi. He took two dribbles to create space for a left-footed shot that was saved.

Down a goal in the 30th minute, Blake won a 50/50 ball after an Indy Eleven steal and played it back to Quinn who fired it toward the far post, but it just missed.

After a Rhode Island yellow card in the 39th, Quinn played a free kick from midfield to the top of the 18 where Rasheed headed it to the edge of the six to Henry-Scott for a volley that was saved.

Mesanvi led the Boys in Blue with five shots and two shots on target, adding two chances created.

In his eighth straight start since being acquired on loan by Indy Eleven, Hafferty recorded game highs of eight tackles won, three chances created, and two successful dribbles, while also leading the team with 11 passes completed in the final third.

Coach Sean McAuley

Sean McAuley is the longest-tenured coach in Indy Eleven history, coaching his 100th match vs. Hartford Athletic on August 9.

McAuley was named to the USL-C “Team of the Week” for Weeks 12 and 25 of 2026. His team was undefeated in league matches at Carroll Stadium from August 31, 2025 to July 24, 2026 (9-0-1).

McAuley earned USL-C “Coach of the Month” in May 2024 and was nominated for USL-C Midseason “Coach of the Year” after leading his team to a 12-match unbeaten streak (4/17-6/15).

The Sheffield, England, native led Indy Eleven to the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals with four straight victories, including a 2-1 triumph at MLS-side Atlanta United on July 9.

In 2025, Indy Eleven continued its run of Cup success under McAuley with a 4-0-3 record in cup play. The Boys in Blue won their U.S. Open Cup Third Round match vs. Miami FC on Hayden’s White’s stoppage-time goal from Cam Lindley.

Saturday, October 3, 2026

SHI Stadium | Piscataway, N.J.

Setting The Scene

• Indiana will head east for its first road test of the season in Week 5 at Rutgers on Saturday (Oct. 3) at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. The game will broadcast on Big Ten Network.

• The all-time series between the two programs is tied at 5-5 with Rutgers winning the previous three matchups. The last meeting was a 31-14 win for Rutgers in Bloomington in 2023.

• This will be the first time that Curt Cignetti has faced Rutgers in his time as head coach at Indiana. Rutgers is one of three conference opponents that Cignetti has not coached against while at IU (Minnesota, USC)..

News & Notes

• Curt Cignetti reached 30 wins in his first 32 games as a Power 4 head coach with the Week 3 win over Western Kentucky (9/19). Only Larry Coker (Miami (Fla.), 2001-03) and Gil Dobie (Washington, 1908-12) reached the mark faster – both doing so in 31 games.

• Cignetti won his 150th career game as head coach in the 29-23 win in Week 4 over Northwestern (9/25).

• Indiana’s 20-game winning streak is the longest nationally since Washington from 2022-24 (21) and the longest in the Big Ten since Ohio State (23) from 2013-14.

• The 20-game winning streak marks just the fourth 20-plus game winning streak in the Big Ten since 1980: Indiana 20, 2024-present; Ohio State 23, 2014-15; Ohio State 24, 2012-13; Penn State 20, 1993-95.

• Indiana has won 31 games over the past three seasons (2024-26) which are the most in a three-year span in program history. MORE ON PAGE 4

• Indiana’s two rushing scores against Northwestern marks 27 multi-rushing touchdown games since the start of 2024 (33 games).

• Indiana’s opening score against Northwestern was a safety, which was the first since 2024 at Michigan State (blocked punt) and first defensive safety since Idaho in 2022.

• The Hoosiers won time of possession for the 24th time in 33 games under Cignetti against the Wildcats.

• Josh Hoover had his first rushing touchdown as a Hoosier on a fourth quarter, 1-yard score against Northwestern to extend IU’s lead to 29-20 with 1:56 left in the game. MORE ON PAGE 7

• Lee Beebe Jr. had his first 200-yard rushing game when he went for a career-high 203 yards against Northwestern along with a career-long 70-yard rush in the fourth quarter. His 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter marked back-to-back weeks with a score. MORE ON PAGE 8

• It was the first 200-yard rushing game by an Indiana player since Stevie Scott had 204 in Week 2 against Virginia in 2018.

• Nick Marsh’s 8-yard touchdown reception against Northwestern marked three out of the last four weeks with a score for Marsh. He also is among the FBS leaders in consecutive games with a reception, 27-straight games dating back to his time at Michigan State (2024-25). MORE ON PAGE 5

• Stephen Daley forced two fumbles and had a solo sack against the Wildcats. MORE ON PAGE 12

• In his first career start, Daniel Ndukwe forced his first career safety when he brought Aidan Chiles down in the end zone in first quarter to put Indiana up 2-0. MORE ON PAGE 12

• Nico Radicic’s three extra points made against Northwestern extended his consecutive extra points made streak to 168, which is the best in program history and now sits No. 2 in Big Ten history, passing Wisconsin’s Rafael Gaglianone (167; 2014-18). He trails Sean Nuerenberger of Ohio State (216; 2014-18) for the No. 1 spot. MORE ON PAGE 15

INDIANA MEN’S BASKETBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Samet Yigitoglu looms large even while sitting on a stool positioned on Branch McCracken Court at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

What would you expect from a 7-foot-2, 270-pound center looking to wreak inside-the-post havoc while bringing a touch of personality?

Basketball practice is over, a Friday night intrasquad scrimmage awaits and then comes an intriguing three-exhibition run of Buter at Indianapolis’s Hinkle Fieldhouse, North Carolina at Indianapolis’s Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and Western Kentucky at Evansville’s Ford Center before the Nov. 2 season opener against Eastern Illinois.

“We’re ready to go,” Yigitoglu says.

Yigitoglu, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, is a Hoosier after spending two seasons at SMU, which is now a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. He’s asked what the biggest difference between the ACC and the Big Ten is.

“The Big Ten is a big dude’s league,” he says with a smile. “It’s a tough league.”

Does that excite him?

“Yeah. Yeah. That’s why I’m here for. I love that.”

A follow-up question comes — who’s the toughest guy he’s faced? Yigitoglu’s eyes light up. A smile comes.

“You mean big guy?”

“Yes, big guy.”

His smile widens. “I was the biggest guy. I was the toughest guy.”

This was among the reasons why IU head coach Darian DeVries signed Yigitoglu out of the transfer portal. DeVries’s first Big Ten season showed him the necessity of physicality in a league that prides itself on that. Yigitoglu brings plenty.

“He’s a big guy,” DeVries has said, “and he’s not afraid of knowing that he’s big, either.”

Forward Trent Sisley is a big guy himself at 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds. He’s in his second year in the program, which makes him the most experienced player in DeVries’s system. He’s fully aware of the benefits Yigitoglu’s inside presence brings.

“The floor is a lot more spaced,” Sisley says. “You can pull in the defense a little more. That creates a little more open shots for us on the perimeter. That’s the biggest change.

“And when he has the ball, you can cut. He’s a good passer. He finds cutters well, and spot-up shooters, as well.”

Last season, Yigitoglu averaged 10.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists while shooting 62.8% from the field. He also averaged 7.9 rebounds in ACC play, 3.6 on the offensive end. That could be huge given IU averaged a Big Ten-worst 8.2 offensive rebounds last season. He also averaged 1.3 blocks.

He wants more. The Hoosiers want more. He’s spent a lot of time working with assistant coach Kenny Johnson to get it.

“I worked on my game with the coaches, especially with Coach Kenny,” Yigitoglu says. “We worked on my floater game, my short-roll game, my decision-making game.

“On the short roll, on the low post, I have to react faster because in the Big Ten, there are a lot of big guys. They’re going to double you, so you have to react faster. You have to decide what to do. You can’t just hold the ball for a couple seconds. Then, it’s too late. So, I work on my reaction.”

Because he’s not a U.S. citizen, Yigitoglu wasn’t eligible to play in the Hoosiers’ international summer trip to Peru. But he did participate in the practices leading up to it, as well as all the other workouts and practices in preparation for the season.

Through it all, Yigitoglu has shown solid passing skills. Still, he says, “I can’t say that I’m a good passer. I have to get better at those reactions because the Big Ten is a way harder, way tougher league. I’ve got to be ready for that level. That’s what I worked on during the summer.”

DeVries’s practice emphasis on physicality and full-throttle pace has Yigitoglu’s full attention.

“The practices are a lot of up and downs,” he says. “We’re in good shape. Practices are way harder than the ACC.”

In what way?

“It’s all over. It’s very competitive and very physical, especially in the paint. You’re doing all this stuff in the paint — box out, push the guy, push the guy, get in position. All of that is way harder here.”

DeVries has rebuilt the roster, landing outstanding transfers in Yigitoglu, forward Aiden Sherrell from Alabama, guard Markus Burton from Notre Dame, guard Darren Harris from Duke, guard Bryce Lindsay from Villanova, and guard Jaeden Mustaf from Georgia Tech as well as promising true freshmen Trevor Manhertz, Prince-Alexander Moody, Vaughn Karvala, and Clemens Sokolov.

It’s all designed to return IU to the Big Ten and national forefront.

“We have a good team,” Yigitoglu says. “We worked hard in the off-season. We were here during the summers for two months, almost three months, so we’re locked in and ready to go.”

INDIANA MEN’S SOCCER

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. —Stephane Njike’s first home backflip celebration put an emphasis on Indiana’s complete performance Friday (Oct. 2) night, as the No. 2-ranked IU men’s soccer team (9-0-2, 4-0-1 B1G) thumped No. 4 Maryland (6-2-1, 1-2-1 B1G), 3-1, on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

The unbeaten Hoosiers improved their Big Ten record to 4-0-1 and stand firmly at the top of the conference table with 13 of the maximum 15 points earned halfway through their league schedule. Through five Big Ten matches, they’ve beaten No. 16 Washington, tied at No. 14 Wisconsin and now taken down the fourth-ranked Terrapins.

A 16th-minute own goal opened the scoring, and the Hoosiers doubled their lead three minutes later through Charlie Heuer. Njike’s goal came in the 63rd to put the game away, though the visitors replied with a score in the 71st.

Njike, a Maryland transfer, recorded the goal with one assist. Easton Bogard assisted twice. Collins Oduro added an assist to Njike’s score. IU goalkeeper Michal Mroz made four saves, including a penalty stop in the 87th minute – with that save, Indiana has not allowed multiple goals in any match this season.

Indiana soccer celebrated its 1974-76 teams during halftime Friday – three teams that won 45 of 54 games played and earned the program’s first appearances in the NCAA Tournament, “College Cup” and national final. Those trailblazers were treated to a performance that surely make them proud.

KEY MOMENTS

• 13′ – Though Indiana quickly took control off the game, Maryland had a great chance early as Moller-Jensen had to clear a header from a corner off the line.

• 17′ – GOAL! Nolan Kinsella fed a ball through to Bogard, who played Oliver Moller-Jensen on a back pass. Jensen’s shot was deflected, and another Terrapin deflection resulted in the ball finding its way onto the right post and in for an own goal. Indiana 1, Maryland 0

• 20′ – GOAL! Njike lofted a cross from the left wing to the far post. Bogard headed the ball back across the face of goal, and Heuer beat a Terp to the back post and put it across the goal line. Indiana 2, Maryland 0

• 45′ – Indiana went into the half with a 2-0 lead, but it could have easily been more with an 8-3 shots advantage. Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack made a good save one-on-one against Njike in the 28th minute, and Heuer saw a chance go just wide in the 37th.

• 63′ – GOAL! A right-footed shot by Oduro from the top of the box took multiple deflections on its way to the back post. There, Njike wasted no time firing a right-footed shot from the left side past the diving Mack. Indiana 3, Maryland 0

• 71′ – GOAL! A Maryland cross whipped in by Rocket Ritarita found the head of Rodrigo Neri at the back post, and he headed it in to draw one back. Indiana 3, Maryland 1

• 87′ – After a review revealed a foul in the box, Neri stepped up to take a penalty for the Terrapins. He tried to place one in the bottom left corner, but Mroz read it all the way and made the save.

NOTABLES

• Indiana improved to 8-0-0 at home and is outscoring opponents 18-4 at Bill Armstrong Stadium this season.

• Njike sustained his good form, recording 7 G/A in six games. The third-year forward hits another gear in conference play; this season, Njike has two goals and three assists in five league matches, and, for his Big Ten Conference career, improved his total to 15 goal contributions in 14 matches for Indiana and Maryland.

• Bogard’s two contributions marked his first collegiate assists.

• Heuer has scored in back-to-back matches against Maryland, having also scored in last year’s defeat in College Park.

• Indiana improved to 9-7-8 in the all-time series with Maryland. Friday’s result marked the first time in six meetings that an IU-Maryland game was decided by multiple goals.

• IU improved to 2-0-1 against ranked opponents this season. Head coach Todd Yeagley boasts a 63-39-21 (.598) career record against Top 25 teams.

• Friday’s attendance: 3,588.

UP NEXT

Indiana’s third of a four-match homestand comes Tuesday (Oct. 6), hosting Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.

INDIANA FIELD HOCKEY

EAST LANSING, Mich. ––– No. 13 Indiana Field Hockey topped Michigan State 1-0 on Friday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich. to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Hoosiers have won seven of their last eight matchups.

KEY MOMENTS

• In the third minute of play, the first quarter started off with an early penalty corner to be taken by the Hoosiers. Michigan State had the opportunity to take a corner of its own in the sixth minute, but both teams completed their attempts without scoring.

• During the corner by the Spartans, third-year goalkeeper Sadie Canelli aided in the unsuccessful shot by making a crucial save for the Hoosiers. The game would remain scoreless after the first.

• In the second frame, Indiana’s defense picked up the pace of play and didn’t allow Michigan State a shot until the final minutes of the half. Second-year midfielder Sydney Meltzer attempted four back-to-back penalty corners through the 26th and 27th minutes of play. In her attempts for the Hoosiers, first-year midfielder Gabriela Garayo Aranceta and second-year forward/midfielder Molly Stutte both attempted shots that were blocked.

• After the break, Meltzer got another attempt at a penalty corner. In the attack, second-year back Lily Freeman notched a shot that was blocked by the Spartan goalie. Despite two more attempts in the circle by the Hoosiers, it was a 0-0 game as the final quarter began.

• The zero on the scoresheet wouldn’t last much longer for Indiana, as Freeman notched one into the cage off a penalty corner attempt to give IU the 1-0 advantage. As play continued, Michigan State was unable to find an opportunity to equalize which gave Indiana the victory.

NOTABLES

• Indiana went for nine total penalty corners throughout the match.

• The 7-3 record is the best start through 10 games since 2014, which also was a 7-3 start. The Hoosiers also continue to be undefeated in conference play.

• Indiana held Michigan State to no shots in the third quarter.

• The Hoosiers totaled 12 shots throughout the contest, with Freeman and Stutte both leading with three each. Garayo Aranceta added two. Second-year forward Celia Arroyo Cabezudo, fourth-year midfielder Inés Garcia Prado and fourth-year forward/midfielder Theresa Ricci each added one of their own.

UP NEXT

• IU continues the weekend with a trip to Columbus, Ohio for another conference matchup against Ohio State at noon at Buckeye Varsity Field. The game can be followed along via live stats and B1G+

INDIANA VOLLEYBALL

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A grueling month of travel in October continues as the Indiana volleyball team (9-3, 2-1 B1G) makes the trip east to New Jersey to face Rutgers on Sunday (Oct. 4) afternoon. Following a tough five-set loss at No. 6 Wisconsin on Thursday evening, the Hoosiers stayed on the road and flew out to Piscataway on Friday to prep for the next match on the schedule.

Despite falling short of the best reverse sweep in program history, IU proved it could play with anyone in the country as it pushed the Badgers to the brink. Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum and second-year outside hitter Jaidyn Jager, former high school teammates, shared the team lead with 16 kills apiece. First-year outside hitter Sara Snowbarger had a career high 11 kills in support.

Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is the player that stirs the pot. When the Hoosiers pass well, she has the ability to set one of the fastest offenses in the country. Since the season opener, IU is hitting at a .278 clip as a team. On five different occasions, the Hoosiers have hit .300 or better in a single match.

The ability to diversify multiple looks offensively has been a catalyst in IU’s fast start in 2026. Eight different players have produced at least seven kills in a match this year. That includes the setter Krickovic who had seven kills in a win over No. 12 Texas A&M earlier in the year. Jager (169) and third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema (124) each have over 100 kills this season.

IU will look to pick up its 10th win of the year and the third in Big Ten play on Sunday at Rutgers. Jason Knapp (PxP) and Allie Sczech (Color) will have the call in front of a national audience on the Big Ten Network. First serve is set for 2 p.m. from Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway.

Notable

ALL INVOLVED: Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic is closing in on becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. She’s less than 325 away as she continues to set the Hoosiers at an elite offensive rate. The Serbian is averaging 10.75 assists per set in her career at IU.

TALLYING WINS: Since the 2022 campaign (four-plus years), Indiana has racked up 86 wins under head coach Steve Aird. That includes at least 15 wins in each full season during that stretch. IU will be looking to reach that plateau again for the fifth-straight year in 2026.

BALANCED ATTACK: All five of IU’s primary attackers in Thursday’s contest had at least eight kills in the five-set match. It’s the fourth time this season that all five attackers have gone for seven-or-more kills in the same match. IU’s three pins combined for 43 kills against the Badgers.

READY TO GO: Second-year middle blocker Victoria Gray answered the bell when her name was called on Thursday. She came off the bench and had eight kills on a .571 hitting percentage with zero errors. The Hoosiers are 5-0 this year when she has at least seven kills in a match.

WITH THE CHANCE: The Hoosiers are 29-2 over the last two seasons when playing unranked opponents. They have done a good job at stacking wins, especially in the Big Ten. IU will look to win its ninth-straight game over Rutgers on Sunday with a chance to improve to 3-1 in the conference this year.

BIG ACES: There are four different players on this year’s roster with at least 10 aces on the season. Second-year setter Teodora Krickovic leads the way with 19 and even has more aces than errors. Over the last eight matches, IU has had eight-or-more aces in a match on six different occasions.

TATUM RETURNS: Fifth-year opposite hitter Avry Tatum regained eligibility before the conference season and has been a big boost to the IU offense. She shared the team lead with 16 kills at No. 6 Wisconsin on Thursday. Tatum had 20 kills (.421 hitting percentage) the last time IU played in Piscataway in 2024.

NO FEAR: First-year outside hitter Sara Snowbarger played fearless against the big block of Wisconsin. She had a career high 11 kills while hitting .333 and matching a career high of 27 swings. It was her third match with double-digit kills in her debut season of college volleyball.

SILENT BUT DEADLY: Third-year middle blocker Ella Boersema quietly had eight kills at a .333 clip in the contest with Wisconsin. She is back in her natural position and has had at least eight kills in five of the last six matches. In three games as a middle blocker this year, she’s hitting at .526 percentage.

TOUGH TESTS: All three of IU’s losses this season have come to teams currently ranked in the top-11 of the AVCA national poll (at Louisville, vs. Tennessee and at Wisconsin). On the flip side, the Hoosiers have picked up five wins against teams from SEC, ACC or the Big Ten this year.

Scouting the Opponent

Rutgers (10-5, 1-2 Big Ten)

• Rutgers picked up its first Big Ten win in style on Thursday by sweeping Ohio State in Columbus. It gives the Scarlet Knights their 10th win of the season. They return home to Piscataway in conference play for the first time for a three-match homestand.

• Freshman Malia Romes enjoyed a breakout game against Ohio State, tallying 11 kills on 16 errorless swings. She holds the team lead with 147 kills. Redshirt junior Skylar George follows behind at 130. Junior setter Lily Bolen and freshman setter Brooke Baldwin have shared the setting duties.

• Rutgers has been extremely aggressive from the end line. The Scarlet Knights lead the conference in total aces (116). Graduate student Karis Willow carries a big top spin jump serve and has used that to the tune of 30 aces on just 31 errors. Bolen also has 26 (0.46 per set) on the season.

Inside the Series

Rutgers

• Since Rutgers joined the league in 2014, IU has dominated the all-time series. The only loss in 21 tries was during the COVID-shortened spring season back in 2021. IU responded the next night with a four-set victory.

• Since that loss, IU has rattled off eight-straight victories in the series. The last five contests have ended in either three or four sets. It’s IU’s longest active winning streak against any Big Ten opponent.

PURDUE FOOTBALL VS. ILLINOIS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With the non-conference slate in the books, Purdue Football hits the road to return to Big Ten play. The Boilermakers renew their rivalry with Illinois as the Cannon Trophy is up for grabs. Kickoff from Gies Memorial Stadium is set for 4:15 p.m. ET on BTN.

QUICK HITS

Purdue leads the Cannon Trophy series 40-32-2, including seven wins in the last 10 matchups.

The last time the Boilermakers made the trip to Illinois, Ryan Browne made his first career start. The Purdue quarterback totaled 415 yards of total offense (297 passing yards, 118 rushing yards), sparking a comeback from a 24-point deficit and forcing overtime.

The Boilermakers are playing their second road Big Ten game before playing their first home conference contest of the season for the first time since 2016.

The Purdue offense averages 319.5 passing yards per game, which ranks 11th in the country. Completing 72.2 percent of passes, the Boilermakers rank second in the Big Ten and 12th nationally.

Browne is the third Purdue quarterback since 1995 to throw for 1,100 yards or more and one or fewer interceptions through the team’s first four games, joining Kyle Orton in 2004 and Curtis Painter in 2007.

For the first time since 2004, the Boilermakers have thrown just one interception through the first four games of a season.

Linebacker Charles Correa ranks fifth nationally in passes defended (6). While Correa has five pass breakups, no other linebacker in the country has more than three. Correa picked off Notre Dame’s CJ Carr for his first career interception, ending Carr’s streak of passes without an INT at 133.

Purdue is the only team in the Big Ten to have two players ranked in the conference’s Top 10 in receptions. Asaad Waseem and Xavier Townsend are tied for seventh with 24 receptions apiece. The duo has combined for 638 receiving yards this season (Waseem – 355, Townsend – 283).

Jacobo Echeverria Lozano leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth in the country with 2.0 made field goals per game. The freshman kicker is 8-for-9 on the year, which included a career-long 47-yard field goal last week versus No. 3 Notre Dame.

The Boilermakers rank eighth nationally in net punting (45.4), in large part to Dylan Drennan averaging 49.1 yards per punt. Drennan’s 52.2 punting average against the Fighting Irish was the second-best single-game punting average in program history.

CANNON TROPHY HISTORY

The Cannon was conceived by Purdue students 121 years ago but was first presented as a trophy by an Illinois alumnus 83 years ago.

It all started in 1905 when a group of Purdue students took the weapon to Champaign in anticipation of firing it to celebrate a victory. Although Purdue did win the game 29-0, Illinois supporters, including Quincy A. Hall, had discovered the Cannon in its hiding place – in a culvert near the old Illinois field – and confiscated it before the Purdue students could start their “booming” celebration.

Later, Hall moved the Cannon to his farmhouse near Milford, Illinois, where it survived a fire and gathered dust until Hall suggested it be used as a trophy between the two schools when the rivalry was resumed in 1943 after a 12-year lapse.

The Tomahawk Service and Leadership Honorary at Purdue and Illini Pride now share the maintenance duty. Purdue leads the Cannon series 40-32-2, including seven wins in the last 10 matchups.

BIG TIME PASSER

Ryan Browne has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football, ranking in the Top 20 in passing yards (17th-1,135), completions (16th-23.0 per game) and completion percentage (18th-71.3%). He cracks the Top 3 in the Big Ten in all three categories.

He is the third Purdue quarterback since 1995 to throw for 1,100 yards or more and one or fewer interceptions through the team’s first four games, joining Kyle Orton in 2004 and Curtis Painter in 2007.

Through the first three games of the season, Browne was the only B1G quarterback to average more than 300 yards per game.

Surpassing 300 passing yards in each of the first three games, Browne joined Jim Everett (1985, twice), Drew Brees (1998, 1999), Kyle Orton (2004), Curtis Painter (2007), David Blough (2018) and Aidan O’Connell (2021, 2022) as the only Purdue quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in three straight games.

Browne now has six 300-yard passing games for his career, tied with Scott Campbell (1980-83) for eighth on the all-time charts.

COMMON CANNON CONNECTION

A trio of Boilermakers are now on the other side of the Cannon Trophy rivalry, returning to their old home stadium this weekend.

Defensive end Trey Smith is in his third season at Purdue, but spent his first season (2023) at Illinois.

This offseason, linebacker Jojo Hayden and defensive lineman Curt Neal made the move east to West Lafayette, joining the Boilermakers from the Illini. Hayden was at Illinois for three years (2023-25), which included playing in 21 games over the past two seasons. Neal, selected by his peers as one of Purdue’s team captains in his first season as a Boilermaker, started eight games for Illinois last year.

ELECTRIC WIDEOUTS

Transfers Xavier Townsend and Asaad Waseem lead the way with 24 receptions apiece, ranking seventh as the only pair of teammates to crack the Big Ten’s Top 10. Waseem paces the team with 355 yards, while Townsend is right behind his teammate with 283 yards.

In the Big Ten opener at UCLA, Waseem and Townsend both had big nights. Townsend caught six passes for a career-high 162 yards and two scores. Waseem hauled in eight passes for a career-best 149 yards on the night. It marked the first time since Purdue played Northwestern at Wrigley Field in 2021 that the Boilermakers had two players with 100 yards receiving.

Townsend became the first Boilermaker with multiple receiving scores since Deion Burks in 2023 against Fresno State. His 162 yards receiving were the most by a Boilermaker since Charlie Jones posted the same tally against Michigan in the 2022 Big Ten Championship Game.

HE’S YA BOY, IJEBOI

Fame Ijeboi made an immediate impact for Purdue, becoming one of the leaders on the offensive side of the ball.

With 289 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the year, he ranks second in the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally.

Ijeboi joined Kory Sheets (8 in 2006, 6 in 2008) as the only Boilermakers with six or more rushing scores through three games since 1995.

Against Wake Forest, Ijeboi finished with 114 rushing yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns, all career highs. Ijeboi also added six receptions for 42 yards. Finding the end zone three times, he became the first Boilermaker with three rushing touchdowns in a game since D.J. Knox helped Purdue knock off No. 2 Ohio State in the famous Tyler Trent Game (Oct. 20, 2018).

In his first game as a Boilermaker, Ijeboi racked up 87 yards and a touchdown while averaging a staggering 7.9 yards per carry to help Purdue roll past Indiana State.

DON’S ISLAND

Don Saunders was a bright spot for the Purdue defense against No. 3 Notre Dame when he was targeted just one time, on the first drive, in 19 coverage snaps and broke up the pass.

The performance against the Irish graded Saunders at 81.4 coverage and 80.5 defensively overall by PFF.

His coverage grade is the best against Notre Dame this season, 5.5 higher than Michigan State’s Jordan Hall.

Saunders was the sixth-highest graded Big Ten player in a highly competitive week.

He has twice graded higher than 80.0 overall and in pass coverage through his first four games as a Boilermaker.

DYLAN’S DYNAMITE LEG

After punting just five times through the first three games of the year, punter Dylan Drennan dropped one of the best punting performances in program history vs. Notre Dame.

The sophomore booted six punts for a 52.2-yard average for the second-longest mark in school history, behind All-American Cody Webster’s 56-yard clip in the 2010 Old Oaken Bucket Game (6-336).

Drennan was named to the Ray Guy Award Ray’s 8 for Week 4.

Early in the fourth quarter, the righty launched a 78-yard punt, with 60 yards through the air, that rolled into the end zone. It was the fifth-longest punt by a Boilermaker in school history and just the third of 78 yards or more over the last 50 years at Purdue.

It marked Drennan’s second career 70-yard boot after a 76-yarder against Eastern Michigan last season when he played at Buffalo.

Thanks to Drennan’s leg and solid coverage, the Boilermakers rank second in the Big Ten and eighth nationally in net punt at 45.36 yards.

Drennan also serves as the holder for the field goal unit that is 8-of-9 on the year on field goals and 14-of-14 on PATs.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL VS NORTH CAROLINA

Notre Dame is 21-2 all-time against North Carolina.

The programs first met in 1949 in the series’ only neutral-site contest which took place in the Bronx, New York at the original Yankee Stadium. The Irish won 42-6 over UNC. Notre Dame ended the 1949 season as National Champions.

Notre Dame has traveled to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, nine times.

The Irish hold a 7-2 record over the Tar Heels in Kenan Stadium.

Since 2008, Notre Dame has won five straight against North Carolina.

Including this week, the Irish have been ranked in the top-five nine times when heading into a contest against the Tar Heels.

The series has seen two ranked matchups – once in 1950 where No. 1 Notre Dame hosted No. 20 North Carolina and in 2020 when No. 2 Notre Dame traveled to No. 25 North Carolina.

The game in 2020 provided one of the more memorable performances when Kyren Williams had 144 total yards and three touchdowns. Williams capped off his big outing by hitting Lebron James’ signature celebration earning a Twitter shoutout from King James himself: “ND Kyren Williams I see you hit em with ‘The Silencer’ to close out this game!”

The Irish are 20-4 against current ACC opponents under Dick Corbett Head Coach Marcus Freeman. Freeman has five wins against ACC opponents in every season he has coached at Notre Dame.

The last time Notre Dame traveled to Kenan Memorial Stadium was in 2022. The Irish defeated the Tar Heels 45-32 and provided Drake Maye and North Carolina their first loss of the 2022 season.

After going scoreless on its first two drives, the Irish offense exploded to score on seven of its next eight possessions to earn the victory. The Irish improved to 2-2 on the season at the time.

Notre Dame has won three straight in Chapel Hill, defeating the Tar Heels in 2017, 2020 and 2022 during that stretch.

NOTRE DAME HOCKEY

SOUTH BEND, Ind. –  Notre Dame hit the ice for the first time this season, playing its first of two exhibitions of the 2026-27 campaign inside Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday evening.  The Irish defeated the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) by a score of 4-2 in the first tuneup of the year.

Eight different Notre Dame players registered at least one point in the victory. Will Belle led the offense with two goals, both coming in the first period. Evan Werner and Sammy Nelson each added a goal in the win.

Nicholas Kempf finished the contest with 28 saves while allowing two goals to get the win between the pipes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Fighting Irish wasted little time getting on the board, as Belle scored the opener within the first five minutes of play off a rebound in front of the crease off a shot from Beckham Edwards from just inside the zone.

Less than five minutes later the USNDTP leveled the score at 1-1off a deflection from Sam Pandolfo.

Notre Dame went back on top at the 14:01 mark. Werner collected a loose puck in the offensive zone and used a backhand shot in front of the crease to beat the goalie to give the Irish a 2-1 lead.

The Irish closed the period strong, scoring twice in the final two minutes to take a three-goal lead at 4-1 into the first intermission. Paul Fischer fed Sammy Nelson, who blew by the defenseman and scored with a highlight finish past the goalie.

Less than a minute later Belle scored his second goal of the first period, as Pano Fimis won a faceoff and Henry Nelson’s shot from the blue line was redirected into the back of the net by the sophomore.

The Fighting Irish maintained their three-goal lead throughout the second period, as neither team was able to add to their tally over the 20 minutes of play. Notre Dame outshot the USNTDP by a margin of 14-10 in the second period.

Notre Dame went on the power play early in the third and were unlucky not to add to its lead, as it hit the post twice during the man advantage.

The USNTDP pulled one back at 11:03 of the third period, scoring on a power play to make the score 4-2 in favor of Notre Dame.

The Irish held the USNDTP scoreless over the final nine minutes of play to secure the 4-2 victory.

UP NEXT

Notre Dame is back in action at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 3 for its second and final preseason tuneup, as it takes on the University of Toronto in Compton Family Ice Arena.

BUTLER MEN’S SOCCER

INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler men’s soccer team picked up its second BIG EAST point in as many matches with a 0-0 draw versus Seton Hall. The Bulldogs had a slight 2-1 edge on shots at halftime, but the Pirates stepped it up and outshot Butler 9-2 after the break. The Bulldogs (0-6-3, 0-0-2 BIG EAST) finished the night with three shots on frame, while Seton Hall (3-2-4, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) managed only one.

On the Record with Assistant Coach Perry Kitchen

“Overall a positive performance from us. A really good fight – and really good team spirit – against a tough opponent. So, it’s back-to-back shutouts for us, which we take. I still think, and the staff as well, overall, we can be cleaner in front of goal. We created enough chances, I think, to take that game, but we build, and we move on again. We get another full training week, and we have another tough opponent in the BIG EAST in Marquette. We build off this and move forward.”

Bulldog Bits

Brooks Boersma saved Seton Hall’s only shot on frame and now has 31 saves this season.

The shutout credited to Boersma in goal was his third this season.

Seton Hall was averaging 4.6 shots-on-goal per match prior to tonight.

Up Next

Butler travels to Marquette for a match that kicks off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Thrilled to be 3-0, excited for an absolute battle in Queens tomorrow!”

Set 1 Butler (25-22)

IU INDY XC

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The IU Indianapolis men’s cross country team had a strong opener to the 2026 season on Friday (Oct. 2) as the Jaguars finished eighth of 18 teams in the Blue Division of Notre Dame’s Joe Piane Invitational. Graduate transfer Izaiah Steury placed ninth of 163 total runners in a time of 23:25.7, breaking the program’s 8K record by more than 40 seconds. Fellow veteran Luke Shappell placed 19th overall in a time of 23:43.7 as the duo became the first and second runners in program history to eclipse 24 minutes.

The Jaguars front running pair helped the program to some impressive victories on Friday, finishing just ahead of Indiana and in front of typical mid-major powers Eastern Michigan, Belmont, Akron and Youngstown State.

“We wanted to see where we’re at as a team because we’re competing against a lot of our conference teams,” Steury said. “This is kind of our first real test, so we just went out there with a set of mind that you we’re going to do our best and to beat as much teams as possible and pack up together. And so that’s what the boys did. I’m super proud of every single one of them from Luke all the way down. I was told a lot of the boys pushed it in the end, passing 10 guys at the straightaway, which is kind of a key component for us to continue to do well into the championship season overall.”

Junior Joey LaPatra finished 70th overall at 24:38.6 and freshman Aidan Connors was the big mover down the stretch, charging hard to a time of 24:42.4 to finish 76th. Nick Cook rounded out the scoring group with a time of 24:43.3 to place 78th. Sophomore Eli Oetken was next in line at 24:53.3 to finish 92nd overall and Riley Nixon and Sam Grimes were 103rd and 109th, respectively. Nixon finished at 25:06.0 and Grimes crossed at 25:10.1.

“I’m proud of how the guys competed today. As a group we executed our race well, closing hard as a pack,” head coach Justin Amburgy said. “I’m happy with this opener and now it’s time for the guys to lock in for the next few weeks.”

Notre Dame won the event in dominating fashion with 22 points while UND’s Daelen Ackley earned the individual tape in a time of 22:54.7.

In the men’s open 8K, rookie Nathan Gehrmann paced the Jaguars’ five entries in uniform with a time of 25:14.40, finishing 25th of 126 runners. Just behind him, TJ Gorman crossed at 25:18.45, placing 27th overall.

The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 when they compete in the ISU Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.

BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL

TOLEDO, Ohio – – In a battle of the Mid-American Conference’s top two programs, the Ball State women’s volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 16-25, 25-16) setback to Toledo Friday evening at Savage Arena.

After dropping the opening two sets, the Cardinals (11-3; 2-1 MAC) answered the call in the third courtesy of a seven-point run that turned an 8-7 deficit into a 14-8 advantage. Unfortunately, the Rockets (11-2; 3-0 MAC) regained the momentum with a 12-3 run midway through the fourth and went on to win the series opener.

In a match pitting the league’s top two offenses and defenses in the NCAA statistical rankings, it was second-ranked Toledo which slowed the top-ranked Ball State offense just enough to earn the victory.

The Cardinals finished the match hitting .169 (46-20-154) and were held to its second-lowest kill total of the season, at 46. A team-high nine of those kills came from junior opposite Tiffany Snook, while senior opposite Madison Buckley, junior outside Ava Smith and senior middle Gwen Crull added eight apiece.

Crull would also tie for match-high honors with five total blocks, while Buckley chipped in four, helping the Cardinals hold a slim 7.0-to-6.0 edge in the category.

In the backcourt, junior libero Sophie Ledbetter continued her solid play, leading all players with 21 digs. Smith was next on the squad with 13. Freshman outside Mallory Pike also turned in a strong stat line with six kills, nine digs and two of the team’s three service aces.

Senior Lindsey Green led BSU’s setting duo with 22 assists, while sophomore Reese Axness handed out 16. Green would also collect seven digs and an ace, while Axness was credited with eight digs.

On the other side of the net, Sophie Catalano led a trio of Rockets attackers in double figures with a match-high 11 kills, while Grace Freiberger collected a team-high 19 digs. Toledo hit .258 (59-18-159) on the night, while holding a 74-to-72 edge in total digs.

The Ball State women’s volleyball team will look to avenge tonight’s loss on Saturday with a 4 p.m. rematch against Toledo.

BALL STATE XC

BALL STATE FIELD HOCKEY

BOONE, N.C. — Lauren Lewis and Jade Vandevoorde each had two shots on goal Friday afternoon, as Ball State outshot Appalachian State 13-8, but it was a pair of third-quarter goals by the Mountaineers that spelled the difference in a 2-0 Mid-American Conference field hockey final.

The Cardinals (3-7, 1-3 MAC) had 11 different players put shots on the goal at Jan C. Watson Field, but only three during a scoreless first half. Appalachian State (6-5, 2-2) took advantage of six penalty corners in the third period alone, with Chloe Hook scoring the Mountaineers’ go-ahead goal on the first of those penalty attempts, just 14 seconds into the second half. Only three minutes later, following two more penalty corners, Brynn Schaffer put a second goal past Ball State goalkeeper Carleigh Hofelich.

Hofelich, to her credit, made six stops against eight shots on goal, surrendering only the two goals during the third-period onslaught. App State had six penalty corners in the third period, compared to just five by the Cardinals over the full match.

Ball State rallied in the final quarter with six shots on goal compared to just one by the Mountaineers, but none found the net.

The Cardinals continue their East Coast road swing at Davidson College, Sunday at noon.

The Sycamores pulled back within one score with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter as running back Nick Osho secured a one-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brock Riddle pulling Indiana State back within one touchdown. The scoring drive was aided by a 21-yard completion from Riddle to Keshon Singleton that put the Sycamores inside the 10-yard line, while Deion Brown added a 13-yard carry on his first touch of the game.

After back-to-back passes to Torey French set up a 4th-and-long, the Yotes’ defense held strong with Nate Ewell breaking up the first-down pass intended for Osho and allowing South Dakota to run out the clock.

INDIANA STATE VOLLEYBALL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Curry Kendall and Kira Holland led all players with 11 kills Friday night, but four Belmont players hit above .350 to lift the homestanding Bruins past Indiana State in three sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) inside the Curb Event Center.

Holland added 14 digs to complete her sixth double-double of the season, while Kendall also tallied eight digs. Macy Lengacher led all players with a season-high 22 digs, while Avery Hales dished out 31 assists.

Set 1 | Belmont 25, Indiana State 17

Sydney King got the Sycamores started with a pair of early kills, with Kendall and Holland both tacking on kills as the Trees kept pace in the front half of the set. A 10-2 run for Belmont quickly put the Blue and White in a bind, though, with the Sycamores facing a 22-14 deficit. Kendall tried to will her team back in the frame with a kill and a late service ace, but the home side took the first set 25-17.

Set 2 | Belmont 25, Indiana State 14

Indiana State quickly found itself in a 9-1 hole in the second before a pair of kills from Holland helped stop the bleeding. Three kills from Corinne Knapp as part of a five-point Sycamore run midway through the set pulled the Trees within 15-11, but that was as close as Indiana State got. Similar to the start of the set, Belmont scored eight of the last nine points to take the middle frame 25-14.

Set 3 | Belmont 25, Indiana State 20

Belmont once again jumped out to an early lead in the third, but kills from Knapp and Hales pulled the Trees back. Kendall and Holland both tacked on a pair of early kills to keep Indiana State on pace with Belmont, but it was a five-point Sycamore run on Lengacher’s serve that gave the Trees life. Lengacher served up a pair of aces in the run, while Lily Mueller, Holland and Knapp put down kills as the Sycamores led 15-14 at the media timeout. Belmont finally broke through with a late four-point run and, despite a kill from Holland near the end, clinched the match with a 25-20 win in the third.

News and Notes

Kira Holland ‘s 11-kill, 14-dig performance was her sixth double-double of the season, tied for the most on the team. It was also her 25th career double-double.

Curry Kendall recorded her ninth match with double-digit kills this season and 25th of her career. Kendall’s nine matches with double-digit kills in 2026 are her most in a season.

Macy Lengacher’s 22 digs were her most in a match since the final weekend of the 2025 season against Southern Illinois, and her most in a three-set match in her career. Lengacher’s 7.33 digs per set in Friday’s match were her most per set since Sept. 2, 2003 at Lindenwood (30 digs in four sets, 7.50 per set).

Indiana State finished with more kills (38-37), assists (38-30) and digs (58-41) than Belmont in Friday’s match.

Savannah Gogel posted 13 kills and five blocks while Wren Jones added 10 kills and eight digs. Carsyn Kelley had a solid match with 39 assists, seven digs, four kills, and two blocks. Brooke Herdes led the way with 15 digs. Mija Sagadin Pristovnik was the top performer for MSU with 14 kills.

Set 1 – Murray State 25, UE 23

A quick start saw Murray State jump out to a 5-1 lead with the Purple Aces making their way back just as fast. After a kill by Ryan Scheu made it a 5-2 game, UE continued its march forward as a block by Savannah Gogel and Carsyn Kelley tied the game at 7-7. Brooke Herdes added a service ace that gave Evansville its first lead at 9-8.

McKenzie Laubach’s third consecutive kill put the Aces in front at 13-12 before MSU scored three in a row to go back up by two points. The back-and-forth game featured a run by UE that included another ace from Herdes that put the Aces in front (18-17); however, the Racers would go back on top at 21-19. Lyla Fisher’s kill knotted the game at 21-21, but the Racers fended off the challenge to take the set.

Set 2 – UE 25, Murray State 20

Murray State had the early edge once again opening a 4-2 lead. Wren Jones’ kill cut the deficit to 6-5 before UE tied the game at 7-7. Another ace by Herdes saw the Aces wrestle away a 10-7 advantage. Laubach took over at that point, providing kills that made it a 12-8 lead before another tally made it a 15-10 game.

Savannah Gogel notched a kill that kept the run going and pushed the lead to 20-12. The Racers never gave up as they stormed back with five in a row to cut the Aces lead to three. Despite the stretch, Evansville finished strong, taking the set by a 25-20 final to tie the match.

Set 3 – UE 25, Murray State 22

Laubach’s solo block got UE on the board as they took a 2-0 edge while Gogel registered a kill to solidify a 7-5 edge. Murray State took its first lead at 8-7 before going by two at 10-8. The teams swapped the lead throughout the middle portion of the frame leading to an 18-18 tie. That is when Evansville took control with a 5-1 run to go up 23-19 with Laubach and Lyla Fisher picking up kills. Scheu had the final two kills to help her squad take a 2-1 lead.

Set 4 – UE 29, Murray State 27

Jones and Fisher recorded early kills to give Evansville a 5-3 lead. Following a run by the Racers that saw the take a 7-6 edge the teams battled to a 10-10 score. Three in a row by the Aces was followed by an 8-0 run from MSU that gave them an 18-13 advantage. With Murray State still up by five at 22-17, the Aces made their run. Laubach had three kills and Kendall Agler picked up an ace as UE came all the way back to tie the game at 23-23.

With the game tied at 27-27, Lyla Fisher finished the match with a pair of kills to secure the road MVC victory.

VALPO WOMEN’S SOCCER

Valpo (5-5-1, 1-1-0 MVC)

Sunday, Oct. 4 – at Murray State (1-8-2, 0-2-0 MVC) – 1 p.m.

Next Up in Valpo Soccer: The Valpo soccer team hits the road for the first time in Valley play this weekend, trekking to Murray, Ky. for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Murray State.

Previously: A late roller-coaster ride ended in the Beacons’ favor Sunday, as after visiting Indiana State leveled the match with two minutes to play, Kiara Desiderio hit a perfect penalty 31 seconds later to give Valpo a 2-1 victory over the Sycamores.

Looking Ahead: It’s another weekend on the road next weekend, as Valpo continues MVC action at UNI.

Following the Beacons: This week’s match will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and live stats will be available at ValpoAthletics.com. All home matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as part of The Valley on ESPN, while select road fixtures will also have live video available.

Head Coach John Marovich: In his 19th season at the helm of the Valpo program, John Marovich holds a 146-144-54 (.503) record both overall and at Valpo as a head coach. The 2014 Horizon League Coach of the Year and the head of the 2022 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year, Marovich is Valpo’s all-time leader in victories.

Series Notes: Valpo owns a slight 5-4-1 advantage in the all-time series against Murray State, but the Beacons’ last win in the series came in the first matchup as MVC opponents in October 2022 – since then, the Racers own a 3-0-1 advantage, including a 1-0 road win at Brown Field last season.

Scouting the Opposition: Murray State enters Sunday’s match with a 1-8-2 overall record this year. The Racers have dropped each of their first two MVC matches, including most recently a 2-1 defeat at Southern Illinois. Seven different players, plus an own goal, have accounted for MSU’s eight goals this season. In goal, Griselda Revolorio has played every minute and owns a 1.45 GAA and a .758 save percentage.

To Score or Not to Score: It’s been pretty simple most of the season for the Beacons – if they score, they’re in good shape for a result. They have scored at least one goal in seven of their 11 matches and own a 5-1-1 record in those matches – in fact, in all seven matches, they found the back of the net at least twice. On the other hand, they’ve been held scoreless on four occasions, resulting in four of their five defeats.

Two or More: Diving a little deeper into the fact the Beacons have yet to score exactly one goal in a match this season – if it feels like that’s unusual, that’s for good reason. Prior to this season, the highest number of matches a Valpo team had scored two-plus goals in a match to start the season before scoring just one goal in a match was four, by the 2006 side. Over the last five full seasons, the Beacons have scored exactly one goal in 36 of 95 matches, or 37.9% of their contests – using that probability, there’s approximately a 1 in 200 chance Valpo would play 11 consecutive matches without scoring exactly one goal at least once.

So This is the Road: When the Beacons hop on the bus Friday afternoon to begin their journey to Murray State, it will be their first time together on a road trip in nearly a month. Valpo closed nonconference play with a pair of home matches before opening the MVC schedule with two matches on Brown Field.  This marks the first time Valpo four consecutive home matches since playing five in a row back in the Eastgate Field days in September and October 2008. The 28-day stretch between games away from home is the longest such stretch in program history.

Once Again: For the third time in the last four matches, sophomores Martha Goddard and Kiara Desiderio both found the back of the net last time out in the win over Indiana State, as both players have now scored four goals in the last four matches. Both Goddard and Desiderio had a brace against Oakland, the first time since October 2006 Valpo has had two players scored multiple goals in the same match, and each scored against Southern Indiana as well.

A Late Match-Winner: Desiderio dispatched the match-winning penalty kick with 1:29 to play in the win over the Sycamores, just 31 seconds after ISU had evened the match at 1-1. It was Valpo’s latest match-winner since Kelsey Jahn scored with 27 seconds remaining in a win at Missouri State to open the 2017 Valley slate.

Record Book Watch: Goddard’s goal against ISU was her seventh of the season, tied for first among MVC players and 31st nationally. Not only that, it leaves her just one goal shy of cracking Valpo’s single-season top-10 chart. Meanwhile, Desiderio’s goal was her sixth of the year and the 13th of her career, just two away from the program’s career top-10 chart despite being just past the halfway mark of her sophomore campaign.

Two Goal Scorers: This season is already the first time since 2017 that Valpo’s second-leading goal scorer has tallied at least six goals for the season – that season, Sydney Griffin had six goals to trail Cory Griffith’s 11 goals. Only three times in program history has Valpo’s second-leading goal scorer recorded at least seven goals, while only once have they hit 10 goals (2005: Emily King 11, Kendall Brown 10).

First-Time Honoree: While Desiderio earned her third career weekly honor from the MVC office with her Player of the Week accolade Sept. 14 after her three-goal, one-assist week, senior Daisy Boardman earned a weekly award for the first time as she was recognized as the MVC Defender of the Week. Boardman played 170 of a possible 180 minutes at right back as the Beacons surrendered just one goal over their final two nonconference wins, while adding her first assist of the season on the attack versus Oakland. Boardman was just the third Valpo player to be honored as Defender of the Week since the Valley broke goalkeeper and defender into two separate weekly awards starting in 2023.

Multiple Weekly Winners: Desiderio and Boardman teamed up to mark the seventh time multiple Valpo players have earned MVC weekly accolades in the same week since Valpo joined the Valley. It was the first such instance since Sept. 26, 2022, when Addy Joiner, Nikki Coryell and Nicole Norfolk swept the player, goalkeeper and defender weekly honors.

Nonconference Success: With wins in each of their final two nonconference fixtures, the Beacons closed out their nonconference slate at .500 with a 4-4-1 record. This is the fifth time in the last seven seasons that Valpo has finished .500 or better in the nonconference schedule.

Putting Away Goals: With six goals over its last two nonconference wins, Valpo bumped its season total to 16 goals. It was the program’s highest goal total entering its first conference match since the 2005 side tallied 17 goals prior to its Mid-Con opener. The Beacons scored multiple goals in six of their nine nonconference matches.

Preseason Honoree: Coming off a rookie campaign in which she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, sophomore Kiara Desiderio was named to the Preseason All-MVC Team. Desiderio, who became Valpo’s first Freshman of the Year since joining the Valley and was also a Second Team All-MVC choice, kicked off her Beacon career with a team-high seven goals in 2025 — tied for third-most by a freshman in program history. She ranked third in the MVC in goals and fifth in points (15), while also being tied for seventh nationally in goals by a freshman.

Who’s Back: The Beacons return 16 players who saw action on the pitch last season, including eight regular starters. That group accounted for 73.4% of the team’s minutes played by field players in 2025, including six players who played over 1,000 minutes – led by junior Ashley Trippeer, who played 1,397 minutes.

Who’s Gone: Valpo graduated four seniors from last year’s squad and had five other offseason departures. Notably, Second Team All-MVC honoree Molly O’Rear and starting goalkeeper Kate Sheridan were among the group of seniors.

Who’s New: The Beacons welcome nine new players to the program this season: seven true freshmen, one Division I transfer and one Division III transfer.

Good as Goddard: Sophomore forward Martha Goddard returns for her second season in the Brown and Gold after a strong rookie campaign. An MVC All-Freshman Team selection, Goddard tallied three goals and recorded five assists, the latter mark matching the program record for assists by a freshman. She was tied for second in the MVC in assists and tied for fourth on Valpo’s overall single-season chart. Goddard became the first Valpo player to register an assist in three consecutive contests since 2017.

Looking Back at Last Year: Valpo posted a 5-8-4 overall record in 2025 and went 2-4-3 in MVC play, earning eight more points in the Valley than the previous season despite playing one fewer conference game and raising its winning percentage 162 points year-over-year. The Beacons scored 21 goals while surrendering 28 goals, improving their goal differential by 21 goals over 2024. This all came with the vast majority of field player minutes coming from underclassmen, as the 2025 Beacons had 41.2% of their field player minutes played by freshman and 42.3% by sophomores. Kiara Desiderio was named the MVC Freshman of the Year and was joined by Molly O’Rear on the Second Team All-MVC, while Martha Goddard joined Desiderio on the MVC All-Freshman Team.
