MLB ROUNDUP: AUSTIN RILEY RESCUES BRAVES IN GAME 1 VS. PHILLIES
Austin Riley’s three-run homer capped a two-out rally in the eighth inning and lifted the host Atlanta Braves to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in a back-and-forth opening game of the best-of-three National League wild-card series on Tuesday.
Braves starter Chris Sale left with one out in the sixth inning, with runners on the corners and Atlanta up 2-1. J.T. Realmuto’s two-run triple off Didier Fuentes put Philadelphia in front, but the Phillies couldn’t hold the lead.
Jhoan Duran (0-1), who converted 33 of 35 save opportunities in the regular season, retired the first five batters he faced before yielding the Braves’ three-run uprising in the eighth.
Atlanta’s Dylan Lee (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth, and Raisel Iglesias handled the ninth for a save.
Yankees 9, Red Sox 0
Cam Schlittler fanned 10 in 6 1/3 dominant innings while Ben Rice homered twice and drove in six runs as New York pulled away for a rout of visiting Boston in Game 1 of an American League wild-card series.
Schlittler (1-0) allowed just three baserunners, two singles and a walk. His 117 pitches were a career high. Rice went 4-for-5, including a solo homer in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the eighth. George Lombard Jr. had three hits and two runs.
Red Sox starter Payton Tolle (0-1) allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Boston managed just three hits.
Astros 6, White Sox 3
Colson Montgomery slugged a home run in his postseason debut as visiting Chicago defeated Houston in Game 1 of an American League wild-card series.
Braden Montgomery, Randal Grichuk and Chase Meidroth recorded multi-hit games for the White Sox. Chicago last won a postseason series when it swept the Astros in the 2005 World Series.
Jordan Hicks (1-0), the second of five Chicago pitchers, threw 1 1/3 shutout innings. Grant Taylor closed it out, permitting just an unearned run 2 1/3 innings. Nelson Velazquez hit a two-run homer for the Astros.
Padres 8, Cubs 0
Michael King allowed one hit through seven scoreless innings and Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts homered as San Diego routed visiting Chicago in Game 1 of a National League wild-card series.
Tatis scored three times and joined Machado (two runs, two RBIs), Jackson Merrill (two RBIs), Ty France and Bogaerts with two hits apiece as San Diego jumped ahead in the best-of-three series.
Chicago’s Matthew Boyd (0-1) served up three homers on changeups while allowing four runs and five hits over four innings.

Whew! What a first day of playoff baseball that was on Tuesday. We had a clutch comeback in Georgia, a Pope-endorsed White Sox win in Houston, two Massachusetts natives dominating the Red Sox in the Bronx and a Michael King no-hit bid in San Diego.

Did the Braves just withstand the Phillies’ best shot?
The hope for the Phillies was that, with their whew! victory on the season’s final day, they’d be able to reset after a miserable week and essentially start over, fully focused on the only thing that matters to a veteran team like this: the postseason. And for 7 1/2 innings in Game 1, they pulled it off, getting timely hitting and some inventive (and slightly out-of-character) bullpen usage from interim manager Don Mattingly. The Truist Park crowd looked and sounded legitimately shook. Mattingly’s decision to call on star closer Jhoan Duran in the seventh inning against the Braves’ best hitters made sense, and you could even argue for the utility of keeping him out for the eighth — this is a best-of-three series after all, every game is very important. But with one extremely misplaced fastball to Austin Riley in the bottom of the eighth, this whole series turned upside down.

Can Brown give the home fans something to cheer?
Here’s something that’s hard to believe but true: The Astros lost their eighth consecutive postseason home game on Tuesday, going back to Game 2 of the 2023 ALDS. Don’t forget: This is a team that won a World Series four years ago, their second in the past 10 years. But it’s also worth remembering that this Astros team isn’t the Astros teams we’ve grown used to seeing. They’re now four games under .500 at Daikin Park for the season. (And, ahem, one game under .500 anywhere for the season.) All the reasons the Astros have struggled this year were apparent in Game 1: They were short on pitching and they couldn’t put together much offense outside Yordan Alvarez.
AL Wild Card Series Game 2, presented by AbbVie: Tonight, 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT on Peacock/NBCSN
There is some hope in Game 2, though. That starts with Brown. Last year’s third-place AL Cy Young Award finisher missed more than two months with a right shoulder strain early this season and was uneven after his return. But he had a 2.47 ERA over his final eight starts, three of which featured double-digit strikeouts. He also has been excellent against the White Sox this year, going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts. Considering the Astros used eight pitchers Tuesday, including closer Josh Hader, they’re going to need Brown to carry them — and he just might.
Red Sox at Yankees

SP: Sonny Gray (BOS) vs. Max Fried (NYY)
Can the Sox end their month-long slump, against THIS pitching staff?
For all the talk of the Phillies’ September struggles offensively, the Red Sox were in even worse shape, scoring an MLB-low 71 runs for the month, or 18 fewer than the 29th-place Phils. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, it is still September. Cam Schlittler continued his dominance over them in Game 1 — that ERA in six starts against Boston is now all the way down to 0.47 — but the Red Sox weren’t any better against relievers Paul Blackburn and John Schreiber. The Yankees didn’t even have to deploy their highest-leverage bullpen arms, keeping them fresh for Game 2.
AL Wild Card Series Game 2, presented by AbbVie: Tonight, 8 ET on NBC/Peacock
While Fried hasn’t been as great as Schlittler against them, he’s been pretty close, going 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA in seven career starts. Though you don’t have to be Schlittler or Fried to shut down the Red Sox right now. You know all that talk about the Yankees needing Aaron Judge? It turns out that they don’t need him that much if the opponent doesn’t score. The Red Sox are running out of time to get the bats going.
Cubs at Padres

This isn’t going to be how PCA’s historic season ends … is it?
The last time someone not named Aaron Judge had a season with a FanGraphs WAR higher than Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 10.6 this year was 2004, when Barry Bonds put up an 11.5 (with a .609 OBP. .609!). What PCA did in 2026 is going to go down as one of the best seasons this century, and one of the best seasons, if not the best season, in Cubs history. It was incredible.
It is also nine innings away from being over. And not just that: It’s nine innings away from another quiet playoff exit, something that may start to feel like part of PCA’s permanent record. After an 0-for-3 night (with a walk) in Game 1 — including two strikeouts that had him growling at third-base umpire Bill Miller over check-swing calls — he is 5-for-30 in his postseason career, including 0-for-his-last-11. Obviously, those numbers aren’t reflective of the year that PCA has had, or the player he is. But if he and the Cubs don’t turn it around on Wednesday, he’s going to have a long autumn and winter to try to remind himself of that.

WEEK 4 PREVIEW
Twelve games in Week 3 were decided by eight points or fewer, tied for the most in a single week in NFL history. Five teams remain undefeated, including three – Kansas City, Las Vegas and Minnesota – that missed the postseason in 2025. This week, the international slate continues with the first of three London games, as Indianapolis and Washington meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 4:
Atlanta (1-2) at New Orleans (1-2) (Monday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN): The Falcons visit the Saints in an NFC South showdown on Monday Night Football, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Superdome reopening after Hurricane Katrina. On September 25, 2006, New Orleans hosted Atlanta and earned a 23-3 victory on Monday Night Football in the first game at the Superdome following the hurricane.
New head coaches making their mark: For the third time in NFL history and excluding the 1920 inaugural NFL season, six head coaches in their first year with a team have won at least two of their team’s first three games of a season, joining 1925 (seven) and 2022 (seven).
The six head coaches in 2026: Buffalo’s Joe Brady (3-0), Las Vegas’ Klint Kubiak (3-0), the New York Giants’ John Harbaugh (2-1), Pittsburgh’s Mike McCarthy (2-1), Baltimore’s Jesse Minter (2-1) and Cleveland’s Todd Monken (2-1).
Kansas City (3-0) at Las Vegas (3-0) (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS): The Chiefs and Raiders, who are each averaging 29.3 points per game this season, will mark the first matchup in Week 4 or later between undefeated teams averaging at least 29 points per game in six seasons (Arizona at the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4, 2021).
Last week, quarterback Patrick Mahomes recorded his 115th career win, tying Tom Brady (115 wins) for the most wins by a quarterback in his first 150 career starts, including the postseason, in NFL history.
Las Vegas quarterback Kirk Cousins is the only quarterback this season with three touchdown passes in each of the first three weeks and became the first quarterback age 38-or-older with at least three touchdown passes in each of his team’s first three games of a season.
Raiders tight end Brock Bowers had 10 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in his season debut last week, his sixth career game with at least 10 receptions, the most by a tight end in his first three seasons in NFL history.
Denver (2-1) at San Francisco (3-0) (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS): The 49ers, one of two remaining undefeated teams in the NFC (along with Minnesota), lead the league in point differential (+48), rank second in scoring offense (32.7 points per game) and tied for third in scoring defense (16.7 points per game against) in the first three weeks.
San Francisco became the fourth team since 1990 to allow zero sacks in each of its’ first three games of a season, joining the 2014 Cincinnati Bengals as well as the 1999 and 2005 Indianapolis Colts.
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, the only quarterback with multiple touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher in each of the first three weeks, leads the NFL with a 133.1 passer rating and ranks tied for first with nine touchdown passes in 2026. He has 14 career games with a passer rating of 130-or-higher (minimum 10 attempts in each game), the most by a quarterback under the age of 27 in NFL history.
Denver quarterback Bo Nix recorded two third quarter touchdown passes and the game-winning rushing touchdown with 47 seconds remaining to help the Broncos overcome a 16-point halftime deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Nix has 12 career regular season game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, trailing only Dak Prescott (14), Justin Herbert (13) and Matt Ryan (13) for the most by a quarterback in his first three seasons since 1970.
Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga, who spent the first four seasons of his career with San Francisco, became the first player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, to record a sack and multiple interceptions, including an interception return of 50-or-more yards for a touchdown, in a single quarter of a single game, which he accomplished during the fourth quarter of last week’s game.
New England (1-2) at Buffalo (3-0) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): The Bills can advance to 4-0 in consecutive seasons for the second time in franchise history (1991-92). Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, who last week became the first quarterback ever with multiple rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games, became the fourth player ever with at least six rushing touchdowns in nine consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk (10 from 1994-2003), LaDainian Tomlinson (10 from 2001-10) and Jim Brown (nine from 1957-65).
Buffalo linebacker Greg Rousseau leads the NFL with six sacks this season and became the third player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, with two-or-more sacks in each of his team’s first three games of a season, joining Mark Gastineau (1984 with the New York Jets) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene (1998 with Carolina).
Pittsburgh (2-1) at Cleveland (2-1) (Thursday night, 8:15 p.m. ET, Prime Video): The Steelers and Browns, both coming off Week 3 victories that featured a game-winning score in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, are set to renew their AFC North rivalry on Thursday Night Football.
Last week, Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers recorded his 165th career regular-season victory, tied with Ben Roethlisberger for the fifth-most regular season wins in NFL history. Only Tom Brady (251 wins) as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers Brett Favre (186), Peyton Manning (186) and Drew Brees (172) have more.
Cleveland can begin 3-1 for the fourth time since 2000 (2001, 2020-21). Browns defensive tackle Mason Graham is one of three players with a sack in each of the first three weeks, along with Buffalo’s Greg Rousseau and Seattle’s Leonard Williams.
Miami (0-3) at Minnesota (3-0) (4:05 p.m. ET, FOX): The Vikings lead the NFL with 14 sacks this season and are the fourth team since 1990 with at least four sacks and multiple takeaways in each of their first three games of a season, joining the 2024 Minnesota Vikings, 2018 Chicago Bears and 1993 New Orleans Saints.
Jacksonville (2-1) at Cincinnati (2-1) (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Last week, in the Jaguars’ 35-6 win over the Patriots, wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter recorded his first career interception and became the fourth player since 2000 with an interception and a touchdown reception in his first two career seasons, joining Marcus Jones, Pro Football Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher and Christian Wilkins. Jacksonville looks to begin 3-1 or better in consecutive seasons for the second time in team history (1997-99).
Indianapolis (1-2) at Washington (1-2) (9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network, London): The Colts and Commanders, both coming off two-point wins in Week 3 for their first victories of the season, are set to kick off the first of three consecutive NFL game weeks in London. Indianapolis’ Daniel Jones, who started in Berlin last season, and Washington’s Marcus Mariota, who started in Madrid, are set to become the seventh and eighth quarterbacks to start an international game in consecutive seasons in different markets, joining Matthew Stafford (London 2025/Australia 2026), Aaron Rodgers (London 2024/Ireland 2025); Philip Rivers (London 2018/Mexico 2019), Derek Carr (Mexico 2017, London 2018), Matt Ryan (Canada 2013/London 2014) and Jay Cutler (Canada 2010/London 2011).

GIANTS ARE RELEASING ODELL BECKHAM JR. AFTER THREE GAMES AND ZERO CATCHES, AP SOURCE SAYS
Odell Beckham Jr.’s return to the New York Giants lasted just three games with no catches.
The Giants are releasing Beckham, according to a person with knowledge of the decision. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the move had not yet been announced.
Beckham, 33, was thrown at just once during his brief cameo back with the team that drafted him. Coach John Harbaugh last week hinted at a bigger role for Beckham, saying he “would be all for it Sunday” against Tennessee and calling it “the perfect time.”
Jameis Winston threw one deep pass intended for Beckham during the first quarter. Fans later chanted “OBJ! OBJ!” to no avail, as Beckham was only on the field for six plays of the ugly, 12-7 win and 20 of 191 (10.5%) this season.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy on Thursday said the Giants were trying to find situations to use Beckham. Nagy added that one injury would be enough to have Beckham playing all the time.
In retrospect, it appears one injury — Calvin Austin’s torn right ACL during training camp — was enough to get Beckham on the 53-man roster after making strides in practice and impressing in preseason games. Had Austin been healthy, there is a good chance Beckham would not have made the final cuts.
It was not immediately clear how the team would use the roster spot.
New York on Monday acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota but also released Jake Haener with the intent of bringing him back on the practice squad.

REPORT: COMMANDERS QB JAYDEN DANIELS MIGHT NEED OFFSEASON SURGERY
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels might need surgery on his dislocated left elbow but will delay any procedure until the offseason, ESPN reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Daniels will return as soon as possible this season but might need a procedure to repair the injury once the season ends.
Daniels, 25, left the Commanders’ Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys after his gruesome injury on the final play of the first half when he planted his left arm on the ground and his elbow buckled.
Daniels missed Washington’s Week 3 victory over the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and also will sit out the team’s Week 4 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts at London on Sunday.
Commanders general manager Adam Peters said Friday that surgery was not in play for Daniels and he would not be placed on injured reserve. Later reports said Daniels was week-to-week.
It was the second elbow dislocation in 10 months for Daniels. He dislocated the same elbow in a 38-14 home loss to the Seahawks during Week 9 last season. He missed three games before returning with a protective brace in Week 14, only to aggravate the injury and miss the remainder of the season.
Marcus Mariota will get another start on Sunday in Daniels’ place. He guided the Commanders (1-2) to a 33-31 victory over the Seahawks last weekend by completing 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards with three touchdowns.
Daniels has completed 56.9% of his passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns this season. He also has rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries.

REPORTS: BUCS WR JALEN MCMILLAN (KNEE) OUT 6-8 WEEKS
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks with a PCL injury, multiple media outlets reported.
McMillan re-injured his left knee during the Buccaneers’ 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon. He initially sustained the injury over the summer.
McMillan, 24, did not record a catch in two games this season for Tampa Bay, which hasn’t gotten much from its passing game and now must deal with quarterback Baker Mayfield (thumb) being sidelined for at least three weeks.
Emeka Egbuka leads the Buccaneers in catches (13) and receiving yards (141). He has one of the two touchdown receptions for Tampa Bay (0-3), which hosts the Green Bay Packers (1-2) on Sunday.
McMillan made a big impact during his rookie season in 2024 after fellow wideout Chris Godwin was lost for the campaign in October. McMillan had seven touchdown receptions in the final five games that year and totaled 37 catches for 461 yards and eight TDs in 13 games (12 starts).
He played in only four games last season after injuring his neck while making a catch in a preseason game.
McMillan has totaled 49 receptions for 639 yards and eight touchdowns in 19 career games (14 starts) since being selected by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Washington.

CAITLIN CLARK, FEVER RESPOND TO TAKE ACES TO DO-OR-DIE GAME 3
Caitlin Clark racked up 27 points and a season-high 15 assists and Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 as the Indiana Fever forced a decisive game in their first-round playoff series with the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces, winning 99-89 in Game 2 on Tuesday night in Indianapolis.
Aliyah Boston added 22 points for the sixth-seeded Fever, who’ll head back to Las Vegas for Thursday night’s Game 3.
Jackie Young kept the third-seeded Aces within range for a long time, pouring in 31 points and hitting four 3-pointers.
But Las Vegas center A’ja Wilson, who pumped in 38 points in the series opener, was held to 22 points on 5-for-11 shooting without an offensive rebound. Her frustration showed with a late-game technical foul and a confrontation — shouting and finger-pointing — with a fan along the baseline.
Chelsea Gray added 10 points and seven assists for Las Vegas.
Clark capped a 7-2 spurt with a 3-pointer with less than five minutes to play as the Fever restored a double-digit lead at 87-77. She hit a step-back 3 for the team’s next points.
Las Vegas made a comeback bid by closing within 92-87 with more than two minutes left, but the Aces would get no closer.
The Fever were much better defensively than in the 102-85 road loss in Game 1 on Sunday.
But the Fever were also so aggressive that the Aces had frequent trips to the free-throw line, where they went 30-for-34. The Fever were 17-for-24.
Indiana stretched its lead to 58-47 early in the third quarter with Boston and Clark both providing a pair of baskets to start the period. The Fever went up by as many as 15 points before going to the fourth quarter with a 72-60 edge.
It took the Aces two minutes into the fourth quarter to close within 76-71 on Jewell Loyd’s 3-pointer. After an Indiana timeout, the margin was trimmed to 76-73 to set up the final 7 1/2-minute stretch.
Earlier, the Fever used a strong second quarter to wipe out an 11-point deficit and surge to a 48-43 halftime lead.
Clark (14) and Mitchell (12) accounted for more than half of Indiana’s points. They combined to shoot 9-for-20 from the field.
Wilson shot 3-for-8 from the field in the opening half, missing more shots than she did in all of Game 1.

JONQUEL JONES, LIBERTY COMPLETE SWEEP OF TOP-SEEDED LYNX
Jonquel Jones scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds as the host New York Liberty made history by eliminating the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx with an 87-71 victory on Tuesday night.
New York, which won the best-of-three first-round series 2-0, also got 21 points, five rebounds and four assists from Breanna Stewart. Sabrina Ionescu added 18 points and a game-high seven assists.
Since the WNBA went to its current playoff format in 2022, this is the first time that the No. 8 seed knocked out the No. 1 seed.
The Liberty will oppose either the fourth-seeded Atlanta Dream or the fifth-seeded Washington Mystics in the WNBA semifinals.
Minnesota, which also lost to New York in the 2024 WNBA Finals, was led by Courtney Williams, who had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Napheesa Collier contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, and Kayla McBride put up 14 points.
Lynx point guard Olivia Miles, the league’s unanimous selection as Rookie of the Year, was held to five points and one assist in 17 minutes. She shot 1-for-7 from the floor and was benched for most of the second half.
During the regular season, Miles averaged 19.8 points and 6.0 assists.
New York, which never trailed, led early by as many as 10 points and closed the first quarter with a 26-21 advantage. Jones dominated early, scoring the Liberty’s first seven points.
The hosts extended their lead to 49-37 entering halftime. In the first half, New York had advantages in paint points (28-18), fastbreak points (13-6), rebounds (20-14) and 3-pointers made (5-3).
Jones led all scorers with 14 points before the break. Williams topped Minnesota with 10.
With 6:26 left in the third, Miles fouled Stewart in the face. Miles was issued a flagrant-1 foul, giving New York two free throws and the ball. Stewart, red-faced after the blow, made both free throws for a 54-49 lead, New York’s largest of the game to that point.
Minnesota subsequently cut the deficit to seven points, but New York closed out the third leading 68-56.
New York led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter.
For the game, the Liberty wound up on top in paint points (44-28), fastbreak points (13-11), rebounds (36-29) and made 3-pointers (10-8).

REPORT: NBA TO CHOOSE FROM 3 BIDS FOR VEGAS EXPANSION TEAM
The NBA is down to three finalists for ownership of its Las Vegas expansion team, ESPN reported Tuesday.
The league is reviewing bids from Nancy Walton Laurie and Bill Laurie; Steve Apostolopoulos and Marc Lasry; and Bill Foley and Jerry Colangelo. The NBA expects to select a winner in the very near future, according to the report, with the formal approval process held before the end of the year.
Bill Laurie is a former owner of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues, and his wife Nancy Walton Laurie is the daughter of Walmart co-founder James “Bud” Walton. The Walton family has been involved with other high-profile sports franchise purchases, as Nancy’s cousin Rob Walton is the principal owner of the NFL’s Denver Broncos.
Apostolopoulos has bid on teams before, failing to come to agreements to purchase the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and the NFL’s Washington Commanders. His partner, Lasry, was a co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2014-23.
Colangelo has Basketball Hall of Fame credentials as a longtime owner of the Phoenix Suns and member of multiple owners committees over the years. His partner, Foley, is the majority owner of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and is actively seeking to bring an NBA team to the city.
The Golden Knights’ home, T-Mobile Arena, is just 10 years old and could serve as a home for an NBA team — it was the site of the NBA Cup in recent years. But ESPN reported that a new arena would be built if Foley and Colangelo win the bid.
The NBA is targeting a start date as early as the 2028-29 season for expansion teams in both Las Vegas and Seattle, ESPN reported. The runners-up in Vegas could factor in the Seattle bidding, per the outlet.

NHL ROUNDUP: PANTHERS SCORE LATE IN OT TO RUIN HURRICANES’ BANNER NIGHT
Gustav Forsling scored with five seconds left in overtime as the Florida Panthers opened the season with a 1-0 win over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday in Raleigh, N.C.
Forsling’s goal marked the only overtime shot for the Panthers. Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 15 shots, including one in the extra session.
After Carolina raised its Stanley Cup championship banner in a pregame ceremony, the teams traded missed scoring chances throughout a scoreless regulation. The Panthers finished 0-for-7 on the power play, and the Hurricanes went 0-for-6.
Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi, who started the final three games of the Stanley Cup Final, drew the starting assignment and made 19 saves.
Canucks 6, Oilers 5 (OT)
Paul Cotter’s second goal of the game was the overtime winner that gave visiting Vancouver a wild victory over Edmonton.
Max Sasson also scored in a two-point game, while Marco Rossi, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Elias Pettersson added singles for the Canucks, who finished last in the league standings last season. Filip Hronek recorded a pair of assists, and goalie Kevin Lankinen made 32 saves.
Evan Bouchard scored three times in a five-point performance while Vasily Podkolzin tallied twice for the Oilers. Goalie Tristan Jarry stopped 17 shots, and Connor McDavid registered two assists. Bouchard is the first defenseman in NHL history to have a five-point game in a season opener.
Bruins 3, Rangers 0
Boston rattled off three goals inside the final four minutes of the third period and beat visiting New York in the season opener for both teams.
Fraser Minten netted the game-winner with 3:46 remaining. He was the lone Bruin to finish with multiple points. JJ Peterka and Mark Kastelic also lit the lamp, while Jeremy Swayman pitched a 24-save shutout to lift Boston to its 11th consecutive home-opening win, which matches the NHL record.
Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin had 20 saves. New York was shut out in Mike Sullivan’s 1,000th game as an NHL head coach.
Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 2
Josh Anderson and Alexandre Carrier each had a goal and an assist for Montreal in an opening-night victory at Toronto.
Zachary Bolduc also scored for the Canadiens while Jakub Dobes stopped 26 shots despite giving up a goal in the first minute.
William Nylander scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who had their 10-game home-opening winning streak snapped. Toronto’s Sergei Bobrovsky, an offseason pickup, made 21 saves.
Golden Knights 5, Blackhawks 2
Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists as Vegas opened the defense of its Western Conference title with a victory over Chicago in Ryan Craig’s head-coaching debut in Las Vegas.

Culp, 5-11, 190 pounds, participated in the Arizona Cardinals’ 2026 offseason program and training camp after originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2026. Collegiately, he spent time at James Madison (2025), Charlotte (2023-24), Troy (2021-22) and Austin Peay (2020).Culp played in 53 career games (35 starts) and compiled 128 tackles (91 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, 21 passes defensed and five interceptions. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — All Caitlin Clark wanted was one more chance to play this season. She delivered a masterpiece.
The All-Star guard scored 27 points, had 15 assists, reached another milestone and provided the energy on both ends of the court to help keep the sixth-seeded Indiana Fever’s postseason alive with a 99-89 victory over the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces. Kelsey Mitchell added 26 points as the crowd chanted “M-V-P” throughout the game.
Indiana evened the best-of-three series at 1-1. Game 3 will be played Thursday at Las Vegas.
Clark became the first player in league history to produce a points-assists double-double in the first half of a playoff game. She had 14 points and 11 assists in the first 20 minutes, and it wasn’t just her scoring or passing that impressed.
“I thought her energy from start to finish — I mean a double-double in the first half — was pretty incredible,” coach Stephanie White said. “The way she moved the ball, attacked from multiple positions. … You always expect to be able to make shots and facilitate. But I thought how she managed the game was really good and her defensive energy I thought was terrific. It’s what we need from her.”
What the Fever and Aces didn’t need was the fourth-quarter incident between a fan and four-time league MVP A’ja Wilson. The two appeared to be pointing and shouting at one another after Sophie Cunningham drew a foul. Wilson walked toward the seats and two teammates, an assistant coach and security intervened to separate everyone.
Wilson was assessed a technical foul for stepping off the court but was not ejected. The man was escorted out by security but was allowed to return because the Fever said he did not violate the fan code of conduct policy.
“I didn’t exactly see what happened, I kind of saw the aftermath,” Aces coach Becky Hammon said. “I’ve never A’ja Wilson go like that so whatever was done I can tell you she felt very disrespected in that moment. I’ve never seen her really react like that ever, so whatever it was, it doesn’t have any place, I don’t think in an arena.”
The incident seemed to motivate Las Vegas, which was trailing 90-79 when it happened at the 4:10 mark, and when Clark fouled out with 2:45 to play, the Aces got as close as 92-87.
But the Fever managed to hang on.
It was a complete turnabout from Game 1 when Wilson dominated the middle and Las Vegas controlled the game. This time, Jackie Young scored 31 points while Wilson had 22 points and nine rebounds and passed Rebekkah Brunson for fourth on the league’s career playoff list.
The Aces looked poised for a second straight blowout when they closed the first quarter on a 9-2 spurt and started the second with a 3 to take a 29-18 lead.
But Clark had something else in mind — she tied up Wilson for a jump ball, grabbed the ball and walked into the baseline corner while pumping her arm toward the crowd. Then Clark put on a dribbling clinic, made nifty pass after nifty pass and became both a harassing presence on defense and the Fever’s emotional leader during a 20-6 second-quarter run.
The spurt ended with Raven Johnson’s short jumper to give Indiana a 46-39 lead. It never trailed again.
“The way I looked at it, your back’s up against the wall,” Clark said. “This is the only opportunity you’re guaranteed to have is these 40 minutes, and you know you’re going to go down swinging if you’re going to lose. But I think we had the mentality like this was one we were going to win, no matter what and do it for our fans.”

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson had heard and seen enough from one Indiana Fever fan Tuesday night. So midway through the fourth quarter, the four-time league MVP tried to express her thoughts.
Wilson stepped toward the fan, pointing and shouting at him after she said he had done the same to her. She was called for a technical foul, the fan was escorted out of the arena and after Indiana’s 99-89 season-saving victory, Wilson explained what happened with 4:10 to play.
“If I’m just walking because I got the foul and I’m just chilling, and if I see a man coming at me, taking steps toward me, pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone, that is unacceptable,” Wilson explained. “You don’t step towards me, you never point at me, that’s unacceptable. I’m not going to put up with that (expletive) at all, excuse my French and God bless. But that is unacceptable.”
It was a frustrating game for the Aces. They blew an 11-point second-quarter lead, spent the entire second half playing catch-up and Wilson, who had 38 points and 16 rebounds in Game 1, finished with 22 and nine in Game 2.
The fracas began when Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was called for a foul on Wilson. As Cunningham started to get up, replays showed one man seated behind the basket pointing in Wilson’s direction while taking a step toward the court.
Wilson then walked toward the man, pointing at him. Two teammates, an assistant coach and security personnel then separated everyone involved. Aces coach Becky Hammon said she was told Wilson was given the technical for stepping off the court.
While Wilson said she apologized to her team for getting the technical, Hammon defended her star player.
“I didn’t exactly see what happened, I kind of saw the aftermath,” Hammon said. “I’ve never seen A’ja Wilson go like that so whatever was done I can tell you she felt very disrespected in that moment. I’ve never seen her really react like that ever, so whatever it was, it doesn’t have any place, I don’t think in an arena.”
It’s also not the first time the Aces have had with an issue with Fever fans this season. The last time Las Vegas visited Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Aces guard Jackie Young, an Indiana prep star, said another man on the sideline was chirping at her all night and finally said something that stepped over the line.
The decisive Game 3 will be played Thursday in Las Vegas, just like last season’s WNBA semifinals. The Aces defeated the Fever 3-2 en route to winning their third league title in four years.
Both men were escorted out and later returned to their seats. In both cases, Fever officials issued a statement saying they did not violate the fan code of conduct policy. The team declined any additional comment. But that explanation didn’t sit well with Wilson.
“How did he get back in the game? Because they said he didn’t do anything. Of course he didn’t, and that’s fine,” Wilson said. “You don’t know me, at all, so to come and step towards me and point at me and say anything, I’ll turn around and tell you. So, yeah, I apologized to the team for that (technical). You don’t have to like me, love me, you can hate me with all of your heart, but you don’t know me. But I guarantee you, you will respect me.”
Hammon put it another way.
“There’s rules and procedures, I think there’s a certain etiquette both players and fans need to abide by, but clearly there’s some things that get the lines crossed and it seems to happen here,” Hammon said. “Like I said, I don’t, I can’t speak to specifically what was said or what was done, but I can speak to the character of our players and the stuff they deal with and the disrespect whether it’s a word or an action, a gesture, it should be addressed appropriately. It’s not my job, it’s the job of this arena so I assume they’re following protocol.”

Bruno Rendón scored a goal for the fourth straight match, Eric Dick made six saves while recording his 33rd career clean sheet, and the Boys in Blue vaulted themselves into second place in the Eastern Conference with a 1-0 win over Rhode Island FC at Carroll Stadium on May 30, extending their home unbeaten streak to nine (8-0-1).
Captain Aodhan Quinn made his 300th USL Championship regular season appearance and midway through the first half became the first USL-C player to log 25,000 minutes. In the 55th minute, Quinn assisted Rendón’s winner on a perfectly-placed cross, bringing him just two assists away from the league record as he recorded the 64th of his career.
Taking a corner kick from the right side, Quinn clipped a ball in towards the top of a box filled with jostling bodies. Rendón drifted away from the masses in front of the goal and tracked down the pass just left of the penalty spot, hitting a masterful right-footed volley into the top-left corner of the goal.
Dick was extraordinary, repeatedly claiming crosses and making comfortable saves on long-range shots. The Indy Eleven goalkeeper never appeared troubled by any of Rhode Island’s six shots on target, and held down the fort in front of the Brickyard Battalion for a second half that saw the visitors take 12 shots.
The Boys in Blue had their first big chance in the 26th minute when Quinn lifted a perfectly timed through ball to Rendón, who was making a run into the box. Indy Eleven’s leading goal-scorer took a touch off his chest at the penalty spot before steering a left-footed shot just right of the goal.
After Rendón’s goal, Edward Kizza had a great chance to double the hosts’ lead in the 65th minute. Logan Neidlinger played a perfect ball from outside the box on the right side to the far post at the six-yard line. Cam Lindley made history for the second straight week, breaking the franchise record for starts in all competitions with his 107th. Lindley already holds the club mark for appearances in all comps with 128, a record that he broke last week. He also surpassed 15,000 career minutes (15,042).
In the final half hour, Rhode Island repeatedly peppered the hosts’ goal with attacks in search of an equalizer. Repeatedly, Indy Eleven’s back line and goalkeeper stayed strong. In the 87th minute, the visitors quickly pushed upfield off a drop ball and recorded their final shot on target with a half-volley from just outside the box sent toward the bottom left corner. Dick dove to his left and made the save, securing the Indy Eleven victory.

Short-handed Boys in Blue fall
Indy Eleven could not overcome the loss of two starters just prior to the match in addition to two injured earlier in the week in a 2-0 setback vs. Miami FC at Carroll Stadium on Saturday.
Forwards Bruno Rendon and Charlie Sharp were in the starting XI before being pulled prior to kickoff, with Malik Henry-Scott and Dylan Sing inserted. Henry-Scott made his second start for the Boys in Blue and Sing started for the fourth time, his first since March. The 24-year-old Henry-Scott led the team with three shots (including one shot on target) and added a chance created.
Midfielder Josh O’Brien is tied for the team lead with Cam Lindley with his 24th start in USL Championship play in 2026, recording two shots (one on target) and two chances created. He is third on the Boys in Blue with 34 shots in league play.
Captain Aodhan Quinn tied O’Brien with two chances created to increase his team-best season total to 45. He led Indy Eleven with 38 completed passes (21 in the final third) and 12 crosses attempted, giving him a team-high 137 crosses in league action.
Defender Alejandro Mitrano, making his eighth start in the past nine matches, was second on the squad with nine crosses attempted, adding 22 completed passes (10 in the final third) and two tackles won.
Center back Nabi Kibunguchy led Indy Eleven with four tackles won, with Quinn, Joe Hafferty, and Jack Blake having three.

Coach Sean McAuley
Sean McAuley is the longest-tenured coach in Indy Eleven history, coaching his 100th match vs. Hartford Athletic on August 9.
McAuley was named to the USL-C “Team of the Week” for Weeks 12 and 25 of 2026. His team was undefeated in league matches at Carroll Stadium from August 31, 2025 to July 24, 2026 (9-0-1).
McAuley earned USL-C “Coach of the Month” in May 2024 and was nominated for USL-C Midseason “Coach of the Year” after leading his team to a 12-match unbeaten streak (4/17-6/15).
The Sheffield, England, native led Indy Eleven to the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals with four straight victories, including a 2-1 triumph at MLS-side Atlanta United on July 9.
In 2025, Indy Eleven continued its run of Cup success under McAuley with a 4-0-3 record in cup play. The Boys in Blue won their U.S. Open Cup Third Round match vs. Miami FC on Hayden’s White’s stoppage-time goal from Cam Lindley.

INDIANA WRESTLING
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– The Indiana Wrestling program announced the team’s schedule for the 2026-27 season on Tuesday (Sept. 29).
The Hoosiers will compete in 14 dual matches and three tournaments in the regular season before the Big Ten and NCAA Championships in March.
Indiana will hold its annual intrasquad match (wrestle-offs_ to unofficially start the 2026-27 campaign on Friday, October 30 at Wilkinson Hall.
The Hoosiers will officially open the regular season with a loaded weekend in Pennsylvania from Nov. 7-8. Indiana will face Lock Haven and Lehigh in dual matches as part of Journeymen WrangleMania on the 7th in Bethlehem, Pa. before competing in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic tournament the next day.
Following that weekend, Indiana will head north for a dual at Central Michigan on Nov. 15 before hosting Oklahoma on Nov. 20 on the following Friday.
Indiana will compete in SIUE’s Cougar Clash tournament on Dec. 6 and then head east for two duals as it heads to Rider (Dec. 20) and Brown (Dec. 22).
The Ken Kraft Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. will be Indiana’s last event before getting into the Big Ten portion of the schedule.
Indiana will start Big Ten duals with a home match against Illinois on January 10 and also host the following schools throughout the winter: Ohio State (Jan. 22), Wisconsin (Feb. 5) and Michigan (Feb. 7).
Indiana’s conference road duals include Rutgers (Jan. 17), Nebraska (Jan. 29), Northwestern (Feb. 12) and Purdue (Feb. 14).
The Big Ten Championships will take place from March 6-7 in Columbus, Ohio and the 2027 NCAA Championships will be held from March 18-20 in St. Louis, Mo.

PURDUE WRESTLING
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Big Ten Conference announced its 2026-27 wrestling schedule on Tuesday, setting up the slate for Purdue’s 107th season of wrestling.
Time and television designations will be released at a later date.
The nation’s No. 21 team in the InterMat preseason tournament rankings, Purdue features its youngest roster since the 2006-07 season. Nineteen of the 30 Boilermakers are entering just their first or second years of college wrestling, including 11 true freshmen.
The team is headlined by returning two-time All-American and 2025 national finalist Joey Blaze (No. 3 at 165 pounds) and three-time NCAA Championships qualifier Brody Baumann (No. 22 at 174). Other key returnees include consistent starters Gavin Brown (149) and James Rowley (184), along with Isaiah Schaefer (141), who debuted at No. 23 in the preseason rankings after redshirting his freshman season.

NOTRE DAME MEN’S SOCCER
CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-2-3-, 2-1-0) finished with a 1-1 draw against the UIC Flames (3-4-2, 1-0-0) in a midweek matchup on the road in Chicago on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Michael Capretto scored his third goal of the season in the draw. He was assisted by fifth year Vlad Walent, who has now recorded a team-high eight points so far this season.
Junior goalkeeper Blake Kelly recorded eight saves, leading the ACC with 49 saves this season and 4.9 saves per game.
The Irish struck in the 11th minute as they posted a 1-0 lead on a banger from Capretto. On a throw-in from Walent, Capretto immediately cut up the middle as he fired it from just outside the penalty arc to put the Irish on the board.
Staying aggressive on the attack, the Irish had another opportunity in the 25th minute – this time from Jack Flanagan. Looking to score in transition, the Irish caught the UIC goalkeeper out of his box as he blundered the clearance attempt. This allowed Flanagan to have a quick look from distance, but the shot would land just high of the crossbar.
Leading by one at the half, the Irish outshot the Flames 8-7 after 45 minutes of play.
The Flames continued to challenge the Irish as they held possession, finding the back of the net in the 61st minute to level the score at 1-all.
Notre Dame countered with their first shot of the second half as Sean McDowd launched it from 30 yards out, but the shot was high and resulted in a UIC goal kick.
UIC had another great look deep in the box in the 65th minute, but the big save from Kelly and clearance from Diego Green kept it an even 1-1.
In the 74th minute, the Irish were looking for a go-ahead goal as they had a shot from Nolan Spicer that was saved, but the rebound fell to the feet of Walent. Walent’s left-footed chip missed left of the cage to remain level with the Flames.
The Irish had another chance in the 75th minute as Tristan Tropeano attacked up the right flank, delivering a cutback to Nate Zimmermann, whose shot went wide right. Zimmermann followed with another shot in the 77th, but resulted in a UIC save.
Notre Dame would look to score on back-to-back corner kicks in the 83rd minute, but with both header attempts too high, they ultimately lead to another UIC goal kick.
The Flames final chance came in the 86th minute as their shot missed just wide of the near post.
On the counter attack, Tropeano remained aggressive as he looked for an opportunity into the left side of the box, but was swarmed by the UIC defenders and was unable to get the shot off.
Michael Capretto would have the final look of the night as his bicycle kick with four seconds remaining would go wide.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team battled to a third place finish at the Windon Memorial at Onwentsia Club hosted by Northwestern. The Irish finished with a score of 1-under over the 54 holes, recording 839 strokes as a team.
Notre Dame was just three shots away from the top of the leaderboard, as Kansas won the event with a score of 4-under. Washington was second with a 3-under and the Irish were the only other team in the 16-team field to finish under par.
The Irish have now finished in the top three in each of their first three tournaments of the season.
Peyton Blackard was the top Notre Dame performer of the tournament, finishing with a 2-under 208 over the three rounds of play. Blackard finished even par or better in each of the three rounds.
Jacob Modleski and Liam Pasternak each shot a 1-over 211, tying for 21st on the individual leaderboard.
ROUND ONE
The Fighting Irish were in sixth place out of the 16 team field following the first 18 holes of play. Notre Dame shot a 2-over 282 in the first session of the day. The Irish were nine shots off the lead heading into the afternoon round.
Liam Pasternak finished under par in his opening round, shooting a 1-under 69 to lead Notre Dame. The sophomore posted four birdies over the 18 holes of play en route to his impressive round.
Peyton Blackard and Jacob Modleski both shot even par 70s to start the Windon Memorial, each recording four birdies in their rounds. Rocco Salvitti and Chase Oberle tied in the first round with 3-over 73s.
ROUND TWO
Notre Dame was one of just three teams to finish in the red in round two of action, posting a 1-under 279 to charge up the leaderboard into a tie for third at 1-over after 36 holes. The Fighting Irish closed the gap to just five strokes of the leader.
Blackard posted the best round of a Fighting Irish golfer on the day with a 2-under 68 in the afternoon session. His round was highlighted by five birdies while recording just two bogeys to position him in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
Pasternak continued his strong form, recording his second 1-under 69 of the day to move to 2-under overall, tying Blackard in seventh overall. The sophomore couldn’t have asked for a better start to his round, birdieing his opening four holes.
Salvitti shot an even par 70 in round two while Modleski and Oberle each posted 2-over 72s to give the Irish a round of 1-under.
ROUND THREE
The Irish saved their best round for last, firing a 2-under 278 on Tuesday to finish 1-under for the tournament to place third. All four golfers that scored for the Irish in the third round shot even par or better.
Salvitti and Modleski each finished the round with a 1-under 69 to pace the Fighting Irish. Modleski’s round featured four birdies while Salvitti played a very clean round with two birdies and 15 pars to finish in the red.
Blackard and Oberle each shot an even par 70 on Tuesday to help the team post its lowest score of the tournament.
UP NEXT
The Irish return home to host the Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course. The tournament opens on Sunday, Oct. 3 and ends on Monday, Oct. 4. The tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by the final 18 holes on Monday.

BUTLER WOMEN’S GOLF
Addi Kooi’s medalist and program-record performance helped lead the Bulldogs to team and individual titles at the NKU Fall Invitational. Butler claimed the team title by 22 strokes over IU Indy.
Kooi finished the tournament with her first individual collegiate win and broke the program’s 54-hole record relative to par, firing off a 208 (-5) across her three rounds. Kooi recorded 10 birdies over the weekend and finished her final round with 16 pars, one bogey and one birdie for an even-par 71.
Butler’s previous 54-hole program record relative to par was three-under 213, which was held by current Bulldog Treva Dodd (twice) and Abigail Gleixner in 2016.
Kooi took the tournament lead in the second round and maintained a steady advantage over the field Tuesday, finishing eight shots clear of IU Indy’s Li (Sherry) Xia and Camille Rosier of UIC.
Freshman Rachel Johnson finished fourth individually, earning the first top-five finish of her collegiate career. Her final round was an even-par 71, giving her a tournament total of 217 (+4).
Individually, Samantha Von Rohr placed tenth, carding a 72 (+1) in the final round to finish the tournament. Von Rohr also recorded nine birdies throughout the event.
Dodd finished the final round with a 74 (+3), the third-lowest score of the day for the Bulldogs, to place 20th overall. Brooklynn Bohnert finished just behind her, carding a 76 (+5) and placing 22nd overall.
Monday’s second round was ended prematurely due to darkness but the Bulldogs held a 12-shot advantage once the second round was completed early Tuesday morning. The Bulldogs finished at 874 (+22) with rounds of 296, a two-over 286 (which was the best team round of the event), and a 292 Tuesday. IU Indy was second at 896, followed by UIC at 904. There were 11 teams in the field.

IU INDY WOMEN’S GOLF
FLORENCE, Ind. – The IU Indianapolis women’s golf team secured a second-place finish of 11 teams at this week’s NKU Fall Invitational at Belterra Golf Course with a 54-hole 896 (295-299-302). Sophomore Li (Sherry) Xia finished tied for second among the 63-player field with a 3-over 216 (71-72-73) and was joined among the top-10 by rookie Janelle Garcia. Garcia finished the two-day event at 223 (70-78-75).
“I feel really good about it,” Xia said. “I’m happy with how I played and everyone on the team played well yesterday too. I’m really proud of how we all did.”
Xia made four birdies on Tuesday, getting to 3-under late in the round before eventually closing at 2-over 73. Behind her, Garcia turned in a 4-over 75 with a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Olivia Aronhalt finished tied for 13th overall at 227 (75-75-77) and Nina Wojtczak closed at 232 (79-76-77).
Junior Cassidy Ayres shot a final round 83 as part of her 242 (83-76-83) and sophomore Emma Frauhiger finished at 244 (84-74-86) while playing as an individual.
Collectively, the Jaguars had a tournament best 31 birdies and finished second among the field in total pars. Xia led the field with 11 birdies while Aronhalt ended her tournament with seven. Garcia paced the Jaguars with 37 pars over 54 holes.
Butler won the event at 874 while the Jaguars cleared third-place UIC by eight shots. Butler’s Addi Kooi earned medalist honors at 5-under 208.
The Jaguars return to action on Oct. 12-13 when they participate at WMU’s Bronco Fall Classic at Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich.

INDIANA STATE WOMEN’S GOLF
FLORENCE, Ind. – Indiana State continued its climb in the field over the final day of the NKU Fall Invitational on Tuesday as the Sycamores closed out the last 22 holes of the weekend at the Belterra Golf Club.
The Sycamores finished fourth overall in the field with a three-round score of +58 to finish second among the Missouri Valley schools in the field, while topping Valparaiso (+80) and Evansville (+151).
Sophia Florek was the top Indiana State finisher over the weekend finishing 13th overall in the field. The senior wrapped up the final day with a combined three-round score of +14 after turning in scores of 78-69-80 on the par 71 course. Florek highlighted her weekend turning in Indiana State’s lone round under par and tied for the second-lowest round overall on the tournament after going 2-under in the second round.
Alana Gilbert (+15) finished 16th overall in the field with a three-round score of 228 after going 76-74-78 over the three rounds. Gilbert went 7-over over her final 18 holes and highlighted her final round with seven consecutive pars on the back nine on the course.
Louise Standtke (+16) was one stroke back of her teammate finishing tied for 18th overall in the field with a three-round score of 229. The junior birdied both the first and fifth holes on the day to finish with a final-round 77 (+6) in the field.
Rosalie DiNunzio (+20) finished tied for 30th overall in the field after her final-round 76 (+5) to close out the tournament. She birdied the 17th hole to highlight a back-nine where she went 1-under on the course.
Keira Brazeau (+21) tied for 35th in the field after turning in Indiana State’s lowest round over the final 18 holes of the tournament. She birdied the second, third, and fourth holes on the front nine, while adding two more birdies on the 16th and 18th on her way to posting a final-round 74 (+3).
Gabby Cone (+25) rounded out the Sycamores in the field after taking competing over the weekend as an individual. She birdied the 14th and 15th holes to highlight her final-round 78 (+7).
Overall, Indiana State turned in the tournament’s lowest scores on Par 3’s on the course (+12), were fourth overall in birdies (28), and third in total pars (152).
Sophia Florek led the Sycamores and was third overall in the field shooting even-par over the course’s Par 3’s, while Gabby Cone and Alana Gilbert were both 1-under par on the Par 5’s over the three rounds. Keira Brazeau and Louise Standtke both recorded a team-best seven birdies over the 54 holes played. Gilbert’s steady play over the weekend resulted in tying for the third-most pars with 38 on the week.

INDIANA STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Tip times for Indiana State’s 15-game women’s basketball home schedule were finalized Tuesday, as announced by head coach Marc Mitchell.
The Sycamores’ 2026-27 home slate features six night games, six afternoon games, one morning game and two games with tip times to be determined in conjunction with home men’s basketball games.
Indiana State’s home opener will be a 7 p.m. tip on November 10 against IU Indy. The Sycamores’ first three home games are all night games, with contests against both Wright State (Nov. 13) and Bellarmine (Nov. 17) also set for 7 p.m. tips.
The Sycamores’ first afternoon home game comes after Thanksgiving, as Indiana State faces Chicago State at 2 p.m. on November 29. Indiana State then follows with its annual Education Day game December 2 against SIU Edwardsville, which will be an 11 a.m. tip.
In a unique twist, the Sycamores are electing to play afternoon home games when classes are not in session, regardless of the day of the week. Indiana State’s games against Murray State (Dec. 18), Northern Iowa (Dec. 31), Drake (Jan. 3) and Bradley (Jan. 7) will all be 2 p.m. tips inside Hulman Center.
Indiana State’s first home night game during conference play comes against Illinois State, with the January 15 game between the Sycamores and Redbirds set for 7 p.m. The Sycamores will also play 7 p.m. tips in conference play against Belmont (Feb. 4) and Southern Illinois (Feb. 25), with a 2 p.m. tip set for the Trees’ home contest against Valparaiso (Feb. 7).
Indiana State’s home games against UIC (Jan. 30) and Evansville (Feb. 21) will have their tip times determined at a later date, depending on the tip times and possible TV designation for men’s basketball home games also scheduled for that day.

Indiana State welcomed 13 newcomers for the 2026-27 season, consisting of one freshman, seven junior college transfers and five four-year college transfers. 10 different states – Alabama, Arizona, California, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Texas and Wisconsin – are represented in the signing class, which includes seven guards and three forwards.
The incoming class of Sycamores joins a pair of returners in Jayci Allen and Amerie Flowers. Flowers averaged 7.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season, ranking in the top 15 in the MVC in rebounds despite playing just 15 minutes per game. Allen was among the top 3-point shooters in the conference in 2025-26, averaging 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while leading the Sycamores with 50 3-pointers.

Saturday afternoon’s contest features the 11th meeting all-time between Indiana State and South Dakota in the two programs’ respective histories. South Dakota leads the series, 8-2, dating back to the inaugural contest in the 2012 season after the Yotes joined the MVFC.
South Dakota has won each of the last five matchups dating back to the 2019 season and has won all five contests played inside the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
Indiana State claimed their last win over USD back on November 3, 2018, when the Sycamores battled the Yotes to a triple overtime thriller at Memorial Stadium. Last Season’s Recap
Indiana State fought their way back against No. 23/RV South Dakota on in the Sycamores’ 2025 Homecoming Game, but the Coyotes were able to run out the clock in securing the 19-14 win at Memorial Stadium.
The Sycamores pulled back within one score with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter as running back Nick Osho secured a one-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brock Riddle pulling Indiana State back within one touchdown. The scoring drive was aided by a 21-yard completion from Riddle to Keshon Singleton that put the Sycamores inside the 10-yard line, while Deion Brown added a 13-yard carry on his first touch of the game.
The Indiana State defense forced a three-and-out on the following South Dakota drive with Mason Knipp making the key stop on 3rd-and-4 at the Yotes’ 31 with a tackle-for-loss forcing a punt and giving the Sycamores the chance for the go-ahead drive.
The Sycamores last chance started near midfield following a short USD punt with Brown taking the first carry up the middle moving the ball to the INS 48. After back-to-back passes to Torey French set up a 4th-and-long, the Yotes’ defense held strong with Nate Ewell breaking up the first-down pass intended for Osho and allowing South Dakota to run out the clock.
Brock Riddle was 13-of-23 through the air in his first collegiate start for 125 yards and two touchdowns. The redshirt freshman quarterback targeted both Singleton and Osho for his first two scoring passes with Singleton hauling in two passes for a game-high 78 yards, while French (three catches, 21 receptions) and Zack Drawdy Jr. (three catches, 19 yards) both had multi-catch games.
Lucas McAllister returned to the field with a career-high 12 tackles, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss as the Sycamores continually attacked one of the best offensive lines in the FCS on the afternoon. Kimal Clark and Ahmond Glass both finished with 10 tackles apiece, while Dallas Westhoff recorded a season-high eight stops in his first start of the season. Overall, the Sycamores recorded four total sacks and 11 tackles-for-loss on the day.

Big Play Receiving Threats
Five games into the season and the big play potential from the Indiana State offense has never been more apparent as eight different Sycamores have recorded a catch of at least 40 yards this year. After BJ Wuest (43) and Torey French (42) all posted long receptions in the opener against SEMO, Jayden Reed (45), Thomas Amankwaa (55), and Tyler Nansel (41) also eclipsed the mark at Purdue. Manny Ellis posted a team-high 63-yard reception in the final nonconference matchup against Valparaiso. KeShon Singleton became the seventh Sycamore to join the club with a 43-yard reception against North Dakota.
Indiana State’s seven different receivers with a 40-plus yard reception surpasses last season’s mark of six players with 40-yard catches. Overall, the Sycamores recorded 13 total receptions of 40 or more yards in the 2025 season.

Jayden Reed became the second Indiana State football player to record a 100-yard receiving game in the 2026 season after hauling in eight receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns against North Dakota on September 26. It marked season-highs in both receptions and yards for the freshman wide receiver through the first five games of his collegiate career.
Reed became the first Sycamore freshman to record 100 receiving yards in a single game since Dante Hendrix achieved the feat twice in the 2018 season. Hendrix’s first 100-yard game came on Oct. 27, 2018, against Youngstown State (7 catches, 186 yards, 2TD), while his second was an 11-catch, 111-yard, 2-TD game against South Dakota (Nov. 3, 2018).

PURDUE FT. WAYNE WOMEN’S GOLF
KINGSTON, N.Y. – Emily Gottman of the Purdue Fort Wayne women’s golf team picked up the highest finish of her Mastodon career on Tuesday (Sept. 29) with a runner-up nod at Stonehill’s Hill YEAH! event.
The sophomore Gottman shot 70 in the final round of play, her first round below par in her collegiate career. She had four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars for her 2-under effort. Starting on hole two, she moved under par just three holes into her day with a birdie on hole four. She bogeyed eight and nine, but more than made up for it with a bogey-free 33 on the back nine. She birdied holes 12, 13 and 18. Gottman’s two-round total of 144 is the second-best in program history for a 36-hole mark.
Hunar Mittal also finished in the top-10 for the 10th time in her career, good for the program record for top-10s in a Mastodon career. She shot 73-76-149 and took 10th place in the 52-player field. Mittal started with a birdie on hole one, finishing the front nine even. She added birdies on holes three and six. After an uneven start to the back nine, Mittal ended on a high note with birdies on holes 17 and 18 to take 10th.
Lillian Gottman improved 17 spots on the leaderboard thanks to a second round of 73. She was 2-under on the back nine thanks to birdies on holes 11, 13 and 18. She finished in 18th place with her 81-73-154.
Louise Ekesall wrapped up in 25th place with a 76-80-156. Her day was highlighted by a birdie on hole five and a stretch of nine pars in a row from hole 11 to one. Lillie Cone was two shots back in 35th place with a 78-80-158. She had a birdie on hole 13 that helped her shoot 1-over on the back nine on Tuesday.
Amaya Wade played as an individual, shooting 87-79-166 for 47th place. She had a birdie on hole 12.
As a team, the Mastodons took third in the nine-team field with a score of 600. That is tied for the sixth-best 36-hole score in Mastodon history. Merrimack won the event with a two-day total of 290.
The Mastodons are back in action on October 12 at the Evann Parker Memorial in North East, Pa.

EVANSVILLE WOMEN’S GOLF
FLORENCE, Ind. – Wrapping up the final day of the NKU Fall Invitational with a 1-over 71, Jane Grankina led the way for the University of Evansville women’s golf team at Belterra Golf Club.
Grankina improved in each of the three rounds making the jump from an 85 to an 82 before carding a 72 in the final 18. She tied for 46th with a final tally of 239. Trinity Dubbs also lowered her score in each round going from an 85 in round one before completing the final two rounds with scores of 83 and 80. Her final tally of 248 saw her finish in 55th.
Mia McGraw led the Purple Aces with an 82 in the first round before posting an 88 in round two before carding an 83 in the final round. Her final score of 251 put her in 56th place. Adeline Wittmer lowered her score each round. Following a 92 to open play, Wittmer posted scores of 89 and 84 to finish with a 265. Frankie Leigh Nicholes wrapped up the event with a 300.
UE took 11th place while Butler took the team and individual championships. Their 3-round tally of 874 bested IU Indy by 22 strokes. Addi Kool of BU was the medalist with a 208. She came in eight strokes ahead of a second-place tie.

SOUTHERN INDIANA WOMEN’S GOLF
KINGSTON, N.Y. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf secured a fifth-place finish and set several new program marks this week at the Hill Yeah! Invitational, hosted by Stonehill College, at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston, New York.
The Screaming Eagles finished fifth out of nine teams with a score of 608 (315-293) and 32 over par. Merrimack College won the invitational, shooting 14 over par for a total of 590 (301-289). The tournament shifted from 54 holes to 36 due to inclement weather.
USI’s strong finish on Tuesday with a single-round score of 293 set a program all-time record for the best team 18-hole score, beating the previous mark by one stroke. The Screaming Eagles’ tournament total of 608 is the program’s best 36-hole score since joining the Division I level in 2022.
Junior Brianna Kirsch was USI’s highest finisher, tying for third overall at the invitational with a score of one over par, 145 (72-73). Her total of 145 is a USI best individual 36-hole score since the jump to Division I in 2022 and tied for second-best all time in program history.
Junior Elizabeth Mercer followed closely behind Kirsch. Mercer competed individually in the tournament. She finished tied for sixth place with a score of two over par, 146 (74-72). Her 36-hole score tied for fifth on USI’s all-time individual 36-hole records.
Sophomore McKenna Lowe tied for 12th after making a huge jump on Tuesday, finishing seven over par and shooting 151 (80-71). Lowe’s final-round score of 71 tied for the program’s ninth-best individual all-time single-round score and tied for the best single-round score by a Screaming Eagle since USI’s move to the D-I ranks.
Kirsch set the pace for USI on Monday, shooting an even-par 72 with three birdies in the first round. Mercer joined Kirsch near the top of the leaderboard with a two-over 74 and recorded four birdies in the opening round.
In the second round, the Screaming Eagles soared. Five out of six USI golfers improved their score in round two. Lowe led USI on Tuesday and improved her score from Monday by nine strokes, shooting a team tournament-best 71 (- 1), the only USI round below par during the invitational. Mercer improved her score by two strokes to an even-par 72 after five birdies. Freshman Kaidyn Wardlaw improved by eight strokes to 75 on Tuesday, and senior Tora Timinsky improved by six strokes to 74.
USI will look to carry its momentum into next week, October 5-6, at the Butler University Fall Invitational at Highland Golf Club in Indianapolis, Indiana.

SOUTHERN INDIANA MEN’S GOLF
MADISON, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf tied for 13th this week at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Dolenc Invitational at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Illinois, as graduate student Jonas Arnstrom-Bakker paced the Screaming Eagles with a top-10 finish and nearly matched a program record.
Collectively, the Screaming Eagles tied for 13th out of 17 teams with a team score of 18 over par at 870 (287-285-298). Bradley University won the invitational with a team score of 15 under par at 837 (272-278-287).
Arnstrom-Bakker led the way as the Screaming Eagles’ top golfer, tying for eighth on the individual leaderboard with a score of 5 under par and a total of 208 (68-69-71). His total of 208 ties for second-best in program history for the top individual 54-hole scores. Arnstrom-Bakker turned in his first top-10 as a Screaming Eagle and the second top-10 by a USI golfer this year.
Round one on Monday morning featured an electric start for Arnstrom-Bakker and sophomore Ingtawan Wangrungwichaisri, each posting a three-under-par 68 to position themselves near the top of the leaderboard early. Both rounds of 68 tied for 20th on USI’s all-time individual 18-hole score list. Freshman Loic Simard notched a team tournament-best seven birdies in round one.
In round two, Arnstrom-Bakker continued his hot start, finishing with a 69 for two under par to keep pace at the top of the leaderboard with a total score of five under par. Simard followed closely behind with an even-par 71 in the second round, while adding five more birdies to his tally. Junior Alex Peck improved on his first-round score by four strokes in round two, carding an eagle in the process.
Tuesday’s final round proved a bit more challenging. Arnstrom-Bakker shot the team’s low round of the day with an even-par 71 after matching his 31 on the back nine in round one with another 31 on the backside Tuesday, logging an eagle and two birdies along the way. Simard added another pair of birdies to bring his tournament total to a team-best 14.
The Screaming Eagles will quickly turn around to compete next week, Sunday through Monday, at the Coyote Creek Classic, hosted by Bradley University, at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Bartonville, Illinois.

Sophomore midfielder Edin Cvorovic scored his second goal of the season and fourth career goal in the match. Sophomore midfielder Tony Murphy added an assist on the goal, his third of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Brian Novillo and Cvorovic lead the Screaming Eagles with two goals apiece, followed by three other players with one goal. Murphy leads the team in assists with three. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob English leads the OVC in saves with 42 and has six games with five or more saves.
Eastern Illinois University (1-5-2, 0-1-0 OVC) fell 2-1 to Western Illinois University in its OVC opener. The Panthers scored in the 18th minute and outshot Western Illinois, 15-11.
The Screaming Eagles feature a 3-11-1 record against the Panthers. In the last matchup, USI fell to EIU 2-0.
EIU’s season is highlighted by a 4-1 win over Chicago State University. Senior defender Marcos Ayelo scored twice in the victory, finding the back of the net in the 18th and 22nd minutes.
Junior forward Keidin Green and senior forward Sergej Misic lead the offensive front with four goals each. Junior midfielder Bernardo Hanel and junior Shuto Ishikawa share the team lead with three assists.
Junior goalkeeper Kai Odagiri is in net for the Panthers. In three starts this season, he is allowing 1.66 goals per match and has accumulated 11 saves this season.
After the home match on Thursday, the Screaming Eagles will hit the road once again for another three-game stretch on the road against Western Illinois (10/4), Houston Christian University (10/8), and the University of the Incarnate Word (10/11).

VALPO MEN’S GOLF
The Valparaiso University men’s golf team made a 16-stroke improvement from Monday’s round as the Beacons closed out Wisconsin’s Badger Invitational at the par-72, 7286-yard University Ridge course in Madison, Wis. on Tuesday. Senior Elliot Lee (Tillamook, Ore. / Tillamook) posted the team’s best Round-3 score.
How It Happened
Lee led the team with a 72 (E), a 12-stroke improvement from his Monday round. He teed off from Hole 18 and had back-to-back bogeys, then shot par or better on 16 straight holes to close out the tournament.
Freshman Tyler Samaan (Elgin, Ill. / Burlington) boasted the team’s best score for the tournament, finishing tied for 65th of 100 at 223. He finished the tournament with a 4-over 76 on Tuesday
Junior Rob Politza (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont Township) and redshirt senior Ryan Somerville (Aurora, Ontario / Aurora) tied for 73rd at 224 for the tournament, tying for second on the team. Somerville’s 74 was Valpo’s second-best 18-hole score on Tuesday, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th, his final hole of the round. Somerville played his final eight holes of the tournament at four under.
The team bounced back from a shaky second round with a 297 in Round 3, finishing 18th and beating out Oakland by five strokes. Southern Miss won the tournament at 841 and had the individual medalist in Jake Moffitt at 202 (-14).
Thoughts From Head Coach Dave Gring
“In our team meeting last night prior to our final round today, we talked about having a quality ‘bounce-back’ round for each player and playing with resolve and school pride. As I expected, the team did exactly that after the poor second round, with each one of our players having a better round today. It could have been easy for the guys to stick their head in the sand and be miserable. Conversely, they played with determination and excellent focus all day. Ryan, Elliot and Adam finished with their best rounds of the tournament. We still have a lot that we need to work on, especially with accuracy off the tee and being sharper around the greens with our chipping and putting.”
“We had an awful lot of 3-putts today, so our speed was poor on our first putts and that cost us a number of shots in our team total. We had two of our players with over four shots lost in today’s rounds in strokes gained putting, and we had two more with over three shots lost in strokes gained putting. That’s a remarkable amount of precious shots lost, especially after hitting a decent amount of fairways and greens in regulation. The golf course offers a lot of large greens, but we need to do better in shot proximity to the hole and simply getting 2-putt greens, when we have putts over 30 feet. We’re going to have a number of days prior to this weekend to put some quality work into our accuracy off the tee and short game, since our tournament this coming weekend is a lot more of the same – narrow fairways, big greens and terrific green complexes.”

Sophomore Katie Estridge (Biloxi, Miss. / Biloxi) posted the best Round-3 score as the Valparaiso University women’s golf team completed the second round and played the entire third round of the NKU Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the par-71, 5988-yard Belterra Golf Club in Florence, Ind.
How It Happened
Estridge turned in a 72 (+1) in the final round of the tournament, racking up six birdies in the round. This marked her career-low round, outdoing her previous best by five strokes.
Estridge etched her name into the program record book, as the 72 is tied for the sixth-best 18-hole score in program history. She turned in Valpo’s best round since Anna Fay opened the Cardinal Classic with a 72 on Sept. 19, 2022. In relation to par, Estridge’s score is tied for seventh in program history and the best since the aforementioned Fay round in 2022.
Freshman Olivia Bailey (Rochester, Ind. / Rochester Community) closed out a top-20 finish, as she tied for 20th in a 63-player field at 230 (+17). She finished the tournament with a 76 in Round 3. Bailey’s 54-hole score was two strokes outside of the program’s all-time top 10.
Estridge and senior Keira Cotter (Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada / Guelph [Lake Superior State]) finished tied for second on the team and part of a tie for 31st overall at 234. Cotter carded a team-best 75 in Round 2 before finishing the tournament with a 74 in Round 3, the best 18-hole score of her Valpo career. She hit even par on her final 10 holes of the day.
Sophomore Nora Meek (Beavercreek, Ohio / Beavercreek) started the third round in style, teeing off 16 by eagling a par-4. She finished the round with a 77, matching her career low from Round 1 of this event.
Valpo finished the third round with a team score of 298 (+14) to finish the tournament at 932 (+80), finishing well ahead of Missouri Valley Conference foe Evansville for 10th on the team leaderboard.
The team score of 932 is tied for the third-best 54-hole score in program history and the best since 928 at the Butler Fall Invitational in October 2023. In relation to par, the team score ranks fifth in program history.
Tuesday’s third round also cracked the program record book, as 298 was the second-best 18-hole overall score in program history behind only the second round of the Dayton Fall Invitational on Oct. 23, 2012 (293). The team’s tournament score in relation to par ranks fifth in program history.

Next Up For Valpo Volleyball: The Valpo volleyball team faces a pair of matches in the second week of Missouri Valley Conference play, hosting UIC in midweek action Wednesday evening to wrap a three-match homestand before hitting the road to play at Southern Illinois Friday night.
Previously: Valpo dropped its first two MVC matches of the season, falling to Belmont in four sets and Illinois State in five sets last weekend.

Series History: UIC – It’s a tight series against the most common opponent in program history, as the Flames hold a slight 33-32 edge in the series. UIC is 8-1 since joining the MVC prior to the 2022 season, but that one Valpo win came last season, as the Beacons swept the Flames in Chicago. UIC returned the favor at the ARC later in the season, earning a four-set win.
Southern Illinois – Valpo leads the all-time series against the Salukis, 14-6, with all but three matchups (all three SIU wins) coming since Valpo joined the MVC. Last season, the Beacons came away with the victory in both matchups, rallying from two sets down for a five-set win [don’t call it a reverse sweep] in Carbondale before taking care of business in straight sets at the ARC.
Scouting the Opposition: UIC – The Flames enter Wednesday’s match at 4-10 overall and 0-2 in MVC play, falling last weekend to Illinois State in four sets and Belmont in three sets. Robyn Ward leads all Valley players with a .400 hitting percentage and also ranks fifth in the conference in blocks, averaging exactly one block per set.
Southern Illinois – The Salukis sit at 8-6 overall this year and are off to a 2-0 start in the MVC, beating Evansville in five sets and sweeping Indiana State last weekend. Jillian Shaneyfelt ranks third in the conference in digs/set (4.41), while McKenzie Moeller sits ninth in kills/set (2.82).
Looking For a Win: The Beacons aim to avoid an 0-3 start to the MVC slate on Wednesday evening when it takes on UIC at the ARC. Valpo has started conference play with defeats in its first three matches twice since moving to the MVC, beginning 0-3 in 2017 and 2019 on its way to 8-10 conference records both years.
Ws Versus Ls: Looking at Valpo’s stats in its wins versus its losses, a few stats stand out. On the attack, the Beacons average nearly three kills per set more than their opponents in wins, while their opponents are 1.2 kills per set better in losses. Along with that, Valpo holds a .265-.177 advantage in hitting percentage in wins, while the opponents have the .275-.186 advantage in losses. The difference in Valpo’s service game is also notable, as the Beacons post 2.35 aces/set in wins versus just 1.42 aces/set in losses.
Efficient Hitting: For the second time this season, Valpo had a match which cracked the program’s top-five charts in the 25-point era for hitting percentage, as the Beacons hit at a .299 clip last Saturday against Illinois State – fourth-best in a five-set match in this era. Leading the way was Maggie Uhwat, who posted a career-best 17 kills while hitting .577 – good for fourth in a five-set match on the program’s individual single-match chart. Earlier this year, Valpo hit .320 in a four-set win over Oakland, which ranks fourth for a four-set match in this era, and also had 70 kills in that match – second-most in a four-set match in this era.
One-Two Punch: The combination of junior outside Jordyn Gove and junior right side Ava Helming has consistently paced the Beacons’ attack this year. Helming currently ranks third in the MVC with 3.76 kills/set, with Gove close behind her in fifth with 3.46 kills/set. Gove, who entered the season with a career high of 16 kills, has surpassed 20 kills four times already this season, including two matches with 22 kills. Meanwhile, Helming also has four matches with at least 20 kills, including a career-best 28 kills against Cleveland State – a mark which ties the most by a Valpo player in the 25-point era.
Player of the Week: Helming was named the MVC Player of the Week Sept. 14 following a weekend in northeastern Ohio where she averaged an MVC-best 4.62 kills/set on .261 hitting, highlighted by her career-high 28-kill effort in the win over Cleveland State. It is the third MVC Player of the Week honor of Helming’s career, as she had one apiece as well in each of her first two seasons.
High Efficiency: Already a very efficient hitter out of the middle, junior Jessica Pickett has been especially efficient as of late. Over the last four matches, Pickett is hitting at a .433 clip and is averaging more than two kills per set. On the season, Pickett ranks second in the MVC with a .396 hitting percentage – a mark which would break the program’s single-season record by over 40 points.
Capturing Crowns: Part of the volleyball program’s winning tradition has been a penchant for capturing tournament titles, and that continued in 2026, as the Beacons claimed the Chattanooga Classic on opening weekend and the WNY Invitational in the season’s fourth weekend. Valpo has won 38 in-season tournament titles since the start of the 2002 campaign. The team has won at least one tournament in 19 of those 25 seasons, and multiple tournaments 12 times. Those tournament titles have come in 14 different states.

This Week in Valpo Football: The Valparaiso University football team will make its first road trip of Pioneer Football League play and head to the state of Kentucky for the second time this season as the Beacons visit Morehead State. This will mark the Pioneer Football League opener for the Eagles, who had a bye last week.
Previously: Valpo opened league play in front of a large Homecoming crowd at Brown Field, dropping the Hoosier Helmet rivalry game 33-28 to Butler. Rowan Keefe threw for two touchdowns and ran for one while setting a career high in completions for a third straight game, Max Samuel had 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss to continue his strong year defensively. Punter Will Orlando averaged 45.5 yards per punt on four attempts with a long of 51. The Beacons have been a very disciplined team under head coach Andy Waddle, but this game was a rare exception as the squad amassed 124 penalty yards. Valpo threw to the endzone for a potential game-winning score with all zeros on the clock, but the pass was broken up to end the game.
Glancing Ahead: Valpo will return home to face off with Drake on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. It’s Times Family Day featuring a pregame Mascot Meet & Greet.
Series Notes: Valpo is 5-26 all-time against Morehead State including losses in each of the last three matchups. Morehead State prevailed 17-13 last season at Brown Field. Six of the last eight matchups have been one-score games. Valpo’s last win was 40-35 on Oct. 22, 2022, which was the program’s first road win over the Eagles since 2006. Valpo is 3-12 all-time in Morehead, Ky.

Backfield Beacons
Max Samuel ranks second in the nation in tackles for loss per game at 2.25 (nine total TFL). He leads all Division-I linebackers (FBS and FCS) in tackles for loss per game.
Samuel is also the PFL leader in sacks per game with 0.88, ranking 20th nationally.
Samuel’s 3.5 tackles for loss in the game against Butler tied for the ninth most nationally in FCS this season.
As a team, the Beacons lead the PFL and rank 20th nationally with 6.5 TFL/game.
Valpo also owns a PFL-best 2.75 sacks per game, ranking 19th nationally.
Punting Prowess
Valpo punter Will Orlando averaged a career-best 45.5 yards per punt with a career-long of 51 in the Sept. 26 game vs. Butler.
Orlando’s punting average of 40.1 ranks third in the Pioneer Football League.
In addition, Orlando ranks third nationally in punting average by a freshman.
Notes Wrapping Up Week 4 – Butler 33, Valpo 28
Michael Rumoro had a career-high 94 rushing yards, with the bulk of the damage coming on his career-long 78-yard run, his second touchdown of the season.
Rowan Keefe found the endzone with his legs, his second rushing touchdown of the season and the fifth of his career. The Valpo QB threw for two scores and now has six passing TDs this season and 24 in his career.
Keefe went 24-of-35 passing for 187 yards, setting a career high in completions for the third straight week. He has 17 completions or more in seven of his last eight games.
Micah Mackay’s TD grab was his first of the season and the second of his career, while Devin Yeats hauled in his first in 2026 and the fourth of his career.
Chris Gundy and Mackay shared the team lead with six receptions apiece, while Gundy led the way with 59 receiving yards.
Nic Lendino was the team’s top tackler with a career-high-tying 13 stops. He accumulates his highest tackle outputs against the arch rivals, as his previous 13-tackle game came in the 2025 season finale at Butler.
Max Samuel had 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against Butler, and is up to a team-high nine tackles for loss and team-high 3.5 sacks on the season.
Anthony Feltrinelli was second on the team with eight tackles, his second time in the last three games with eight or more.
Kaiser Wilhelm’s 81-yard kick return was the team’s longest so far this season.
Valpo had its best third-down offense of the season, going 7-of-14 for 50 percent.
Penalties were a bugaboo on Saturday, as Valpo’s 124 penalty yards marked the team’s most of the Waddle Era and most since the final game of the 2021 season.
Block Party
Valpo blocked two punts in the season opener against Lawrence Tech, and then followed that up by blocking both a field goal and PAT in the Week 2 game at Murray State. The fun continued in Week 3, when the squad blocked a punt in the game at Indiana State.
The Beacons are tied with Weber State and Marist for the Division-I (FBS and FCS) lead in blocked kicks with five. Valpo is one of five teams tied for the national lead in all divisions of NCAA Football (FCS, FBS, Division-II and Division-III) with five blocked kicks.
Valpo’s three blocked punts are tied for second nationally behind Marist’s four.
The team is already only one block away from moving into a tie for fourth in program history for blocked kicks in a season.
Antony Morris, Nick Beidl, Garrett Risley, Bertrand Berry II and Jayden Brogden have all blocked kicks this season.

QB1 Named Campbell Trophy Semifinalist
Valpo quarterback Rowan Keefe was named a semifinalist for the 2026 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football premier scholar-athlete award.
The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the best scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Keefe is one of 45 semifinalists from FCS programs, one of three from the Pioneer Football League and one of 206 semifinalists across all levels of college football. The NFF will announce 12 to 16 finalists on Oct. 21.
Off the field, Keefe has served as a flag football referee for the Boys & Girls Club, has volunteered for gift drives for Christmas in Merrillville, has done volunteer construction work at a veteran home in Valparaiso and has participated in Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics.

UINDY MEN’S GOLF
PERU, Ind. – The UIndy men’s golf team shared eighth place at the Midwest Collegiate tournament, held Monday and Tuesday at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Ind. Led by a top-15 performance by senior Joseph Armfield, the Greyhounds climbed two spots in the final round in the 18-team, region-heavy field.
Armfield (+2) capped his week with a one-under 71 to vault up the leaderboard in Tuesday’s final round. Powered by 10 total birdies, the Zionsville, Ind., native finished at T-14, good for his second straight top-20 showing.
Freshman Jacoby Schmidlapp (+3) finished just one stroke back of his teammate at T-21. He too saved his best round for last, carding an even-par 72 Tuesday.
Freshman Noah Johnson (+10) shared 47th place, fellow-rookie Caden Matthias (+11) tied for 57th, and senior Alexander Nestun (+16) placed 74th.

UINDY SWIMMING
LEWISBURG, Pa – The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its annual Division II Preseason Top 25 on Tuesday, with both UIndy programs owning top-five spots. The Greyhound men will open the season at No. 5, while the UIndy women took the fifth spot.

The rankings are voted on by committees of Division II coaches representing a cross-section of programs and conferences throughout the country. Poll committee members evaluate teams based on head-to-head performances, nationally ranked performances, significant performances achieved since the previous poll, results from invitational and championship-style competition, and the quality and depth of performances across events.
Together, these criteria are intended to provide a comprehensive assessment of each program’s performance at the time of the poll, while recognizing the different competitive opportunities and formats that occur throughout the collegiate season.

ROSE HULMAN MEN’S SOCCER
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Rose-Hulman men’s soccer team hosted St. Mary-of-the-Woods College on Tuesday night. The Fightin’ Engineers fell short to the Pomeroys with a final score of 2-1. This drops Rose-Hulman to 3-4-3 overall this season.
The game proved to be a chippy contest with both teams playing aggressively. The Pomeroys were able to strike first, just seven minutes into the game, with a goal to take the early lead.
Rose-Hulman answered quickly in the ninth minute. Eli Miller attacked the goal with a shot that was saved and bounced back to Benjamin Murphy. Murphy sailed a shot over the goalie’s head into the back of the net for the equalizer.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods was able to get behind the Rose-Hulman defense later in the half to retake the lead in the 30th minute to make the score 2-1 at the halftime break.
The Fightin’ Engineers had two corner kicks and four shots in the second half, but were unable to even the score, ultimately suffering the loss to the Pomeroys.
Rose-Hulman finished the game out-shooting SMWC 9-8 and had three corner kicks compared to the Pomeroys zero. Alex Kerestan made his first start in goal for the Fightin’ Engineers, playing all 90 minutes with one save.
Rose-Hulman men’s soccer will return to action on Saturday, October 3, hosting Hanover in HCAC play on Homecoming Weekend at 3:30 PM.

WABASH MEN’S SOCCER
ADRIAN, Mich. – Wabash College generated 10 corner kicks and put five shots on goal Tuesday evening but could not overcome a second-half penalty kick in a 1-0 nonconference loss to Adrian College at Docking Stadium.
The Little Giants pressed for an equalizer throughout the closing minutes, producing six corner kicks in an eight-minute span late in the second half. Wabash finished with eight shots overall, including five on goal, while eight of its 10 corner kicks came after halftime.
Wabash created several early chances in a scoreless first half. Bryce Kinnaman forced Adrian goalkeeper Eli Sizemore to make two saves between the eighth and 22nd minutes, while Alfredo Campos added a shot that sailed high.
Adrian answered with a late first-half push, earning two corner kicks and attempting three shots over an 11-minute stretch. The Wabash defense kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard, and Ethan Simmons forced another save from Sizemore in the 41st minute to send the teams into halftime tied 0-0.
Adrian broke the deadlock at 57:37 when Jack Pelton converted a penalty kick for the only goal of the match.
The Little Giants immediately went to work trying to erase the deficit. Danny Tkachuk had an attempt stopped by an Adrian team save later in the half, and Rafael Cordova kept Wabash within one goal by making a save on Carter Kerbawy in the 69th minute.
Wabash increased the pressure over the final 15 minutes, earning six corner kicks between 76:13 and 83:38. Kinnaman sent another attempt wide before Tkachuk put a shot on goal in the 89th minute that Sizemore saved to preserve the Adrian shutout.
Kinnaman and Tkachuk each finished with three shots and two shots on goal to lead the Wabash attack. Cordova played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
Pelton led Adrian with three shots. Sizemore made four saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs.
The match concluded the nonconference portion of the Wabash schedule. The Little Giants open North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday, Oct. 3, with a 1 p.m. match at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
